Setup won't work....

Question: Setup won't work....

It will let me in but... can't move up and down. Can't escape. Nothing works there. I have to do a hard shutdown! I am running Windows XP Home, service pack, constant Norton updates and scans, and I use spybot also.

Help!

Preferred Solution: Setup won't work....

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I had to replace the hard disk in this computer; but, the old disk was running well enough so that I backed up all the user data, Favorites folder, etc. In the past, I have always been able to just copy the content of the old Favorites folder to the new Favorites folder and the Favorites would all show up in IE; but, for some reason none of the copied favorites shwo, only new ones made in the new setup.

What can I do to fix this?

NOTE: I am putting the Favs into the CORRECT folder.

Answer:Can't get favorites from old setup to work in new setup

Question: NT setup at work

Hey, I was wondering, I work at a franchise restaurant running NT. There is a main computer in the office, it supports several p.o.s. stations as well as being networked to corporate. I have never seen a desktop quite like this one. I assume it is specially set up for security reasons. There is no my computer icon, the command prompt has been disabled, along with many other common windows features. What sort of version of NT is this? I was there for a recent upgrade where we performed a tower swap on site, and a tech basically installed the rest of the software over the network. Is this a VPN? There is no firewall on the main computer so I assume it must be? Is this some sort of always on remote desktop connection to corporate? They can always "see in" to our computer. Just wondering, thanks.

Excellent tutorial.I have few questions though.

Currently i have dual boot windows 7 and Ubuntu and i use EasyBCD to choose which OS to boot at laptop startup.Grub of ubuntu is not in control rather windows boot manager is since i installed Grub in same partition as Ubuntu itself.
So i am asking how will this setup work for me if i choose to install windows 8 on a separate partition on my laptop.

Currently i am running windows 8 in virtualbox and its not giving me satisfactory results

Any suggestion will be appreciated.

The way things are setup, and the fact things cannot be returned, leads me to believe this is probably the best option for me.

What I want to know is would my PC's still be able to see the Xbox so I may use XBConnect? And how much of a hassle is it to install a router, like will I need to install software in all three of my computers?

Thank you (for all past and present help),

Before I say anything else, I am very new to building a computer. Ive never built one in my life. I am curious if the setup I have to far will work! I am trying to look for pretty cheap but good options for parts. So far I have a case, processor, and GPU in mind. I need ideas for the motherboard especially. I dont know how to tell if everything would work correctly, so if something would be incompatible, could you tell me?

So far I have

GPU: Nvidia GTX 760
CPU: Intel Core i7-3770k
Case: NZXT Phantom 240 Mid Tower
Ram:
Motherboard:
Hard-Drive: Seagate Barracuda 2TB HDD
Power Supply:
DVD Drive:
Operating System: Windows 7 64 Bit
Monitor:

Would there be anything else I need? Also what is thermal compound and Heatsink? Are these required for my setup? Please tell me if there is anything wrong with this so far and what items I should use for the unfilled spaces! Thank you all so much!

Would this rig setup work out?  It's not exactly my money that I'm spending, some one is being nice enough to help me upgrade my computer a little bit, so I can't really be suggested higher performance parts.. this really fills my budget to the brim. http://www.gooeypc.com/beta/gooeygui.aspx?public_rigid=13461I might add that I have a rosewill RD600, a 600 watt power supply. The site bugs out when I attempt to add it to the rig. I also have a basic usb 2.0 keyboard, and a 19" monitor that connects through DVI. I already have most of these parts, I'm just trying to "upgrade" a little, with the motherboard, cpu, memory, case, mouse, and hard drive.I just want to know if all of this is compatible with each other, I've looked into the specs, and all seem to match, like the cpu to the motherboards AM3+ socket and that the motherboard supports FX cpu's. Stuff like that I checked out, but I'm calling on professionals to see if I missed anything. The CPU supposedly comes with the fan and heatsink and the "coolant gel".  Thank you for your time!  Edit: Oh! and the video card doesn't exactly match mine. The one I have is PCIe 2.0, and it's Sapphire.

Answer:Would this Rig setup work?

The RD600 PSU isn't amazing, but it's not terrible.  I would suggest going with a better unit, though.Everything is compatible, yes, but I wouldn't get an MSI motherboard due to reliability, and I wouldn't get the Western Digital Black HDD either as they're usually priced higher than the competition without the performance to justify it, unless you really *really* want the 5 year warranty.I know you didn't ask for suggestions, but if you let us know your budget & where you're buying from, we may be able to suggest a better build without increasing the cost.

Nope. You can only have ONE DSL/ADSL connection on a single telephone line.

it should be able to do it, perhaps use psu calculator lite, just to check it out, but update both the ATI and nvidia drivers first - the Nvidia card will automatically be assigned to physx calculations

Will this setup work?? I love gaming but I'm not to great with technical stuff. I want to get the Asus VH236 and play xbox and hook up my TV to it. I want to be able to play my xbox through a VGA wire and then hook up my cable box to the monitor using an HDMI cord. Will this work? And does this TV have built in speakers that will let me here audio from the cable box? I read on one site that it does but I just want to make sure. Sorry if this sounds confusing. Any help is greatly appreciated.

On one of my computers I have a 120 gig SSD with Win 7 and programs installed. There's also a 500 gig mechanical drive for data. I'm thinking of sticking another mechanical drive in there just for Win 8.1 and dual boot. Will this work ok? What will happen to the boot files? Will they stay with the Win 7 on the SSD or move to the Win 8 drive?
Thanks for your response,

I am looking to use these parts together but I am unsure whether it is possible or not. I already have a case, PSU, audio card and wireless card. The parts are:
Asus M4A87TD EVO 870 Socket AM3 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard
G-Skill 4GB DDR3 1600Mhz Ripjaws Memory Module CL9
AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition 3.3 GHz Socket AM3 6MB Cache
MSI GeForce GTX 560TI Twin FrozR II
But I would like to have two of the GPU's in sli but I am unsure if it is possible or not with the motherboard, and if not could an alternative be recommended.

Answer:Would this setup work?

The Nvidia card should work on that motherboard singly but the board only supports ATI gx cards in crossfire so if you want SLI then you may need an AMD socket with Nvidia chipset. (there are people running Nvidia cards on ATI mobo but why ask for trouble)
You can get a mobo like this one click here instead if you want to run SLI.

Answer:Hey can Someone tell me if this Setup will work?

Welcome to Majorgeeks!

The motherboard should be fine, though most would suggest you stick to ASUS/Gigabyte, or even ASRock (their quality/reliability has improved a lot in recent years) instead.

The PSU will need to go if you value stability and the lifespan of your other components. HEC are rated very low in the quality/reliability stakes. For best assurance, a 520W+ by SeaSonic/XFX is highly recommended, all their PSU's are very high quality.

I guess you're going to overclock from your CPU/cooling choices, in which case, a 650W+ may be better longer term, especially if you plan on upgrading the GPU (it's a little underpowered in this rig) or going Crossfire in the near future.

You'll need to budget for SSD/HDD, maybe a DVD/BD too.

The RAM might not be as reliable as Kingston or Crucial (Micron), check out what they have suited to your 'board with their online configurators.

HI,

I have dictionary called the Unified Medical dictionary English-Arabic

anyway, i have the ISO file
i installed it on Win7 x32 with no problem

but i tried to install it on Winx64 but it says an error like "the setup file is not compatible with Win7 x64"

I tried to search for the x64 version but i had no success, google sometimes becomes lame u know....
I tried to just copy the already installed dictionary folders to Win7x64 but it didnt open cuz it seems that it needs to be installed

So is there any way to like edit that setup.exe file or something to work on x64 version cuz it seems if i can just bypass that step it will work

or like a work around the "copy whole folders" and get it to work
I really need some help with it,
thanks in advance,
Elsayed,

Answer:Is there a work around if Win7 x32 setup file wont work on Win7 x64

sometimes 32 bit applications have 16 bit installer and that won 't work on 64 bit system, but if this is not the case did you try to run installer in compatibility mode? (right click/properties/compatibility). Installer generally does three things: creates program directory, copies some DLL files to system directory and writes some data into registry. You could trace those things in Win32 installation and try manually recreate this on 64bit machine, but who knows if it will work. Also search for portable version, those don't require installation and frankly now a days I don't use anything else but portable applications unless there is no other way.

I currently have this setup
- i3 2120 stock @ 3.30 GHz
- Powercolor 7750 1GB
- ASRock H61M-DGS Micro ATX LGA1155 Motherboard
- Corsair 500W
- 8 GB RAM

I want to know if uprgrading to this GPU (Powercolor 7870 Myste Tahili LE):http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=78372 would be possible. I know that the GPU's minimum voltage is 500W, which i have, but will that fry/break my card by any chance? Also, will the i3 2120 bottleneck this card at all? Will it run games closely to an i5, or is there a major difference? I could barely play the BF4 beta on low settings with my current card, and a $200 jump should be a nice change. I have a 1440 x 900 monitor, so should I see higher FPS than a 1920 x 1080 monitor? ANY feedback would be great (including estimated FPS in some games ).
Forgot to mention - What is UEFI? It says that on the box, and I was wondering what it did. Will i need that to run this card or something? Thanks again!

Hi everyone. I am looking to buy a new router and I had some questions before making the purchase. I have a Windows XP machine (does not have wifi support) that I am connecting directly to the router I have right now via an ethernet cable. I also have a laptop and a phone that I am using but they are connected to my router using wifi. I was wondering that if I got a new router, Will I still be able to connect my windows XP machine to the new router using an ethernet cable. I dont know if the router I am using right now has some special capabilities to let a Windows XP machine connect to the internet. Thank you.

As the subject says, I have a 5.1 soundcard (Audigy), 5 speakers (Creative 5300) and a sub. At the moment, only 2 speakers at a time work.

None of the speakers are defective because I can plug different speakers into the two holes that do output sound, and each speaker can output sound using these holes.

Note that I have checked that the speakers were all plugged in properly into the back of my soundcard, and that Windows XP was set to a 5 speaker setup in the control panel.

Also note that when i got the speakers and soundcard, all 5 speakers were working at once. Then suddenly one day the output dropped to 2 speakers, with no apparent change to hardware or software.

I am unsure how to proceed.... any suggestions?

Answer:Would this mobo and cpu setup work?

I am sort of "out to lunch" as to whether there is a performance difference on the same speed ram from DDR to DDR2, but the higher speeds that are available in DDR2 and the prices are also lower, make it really desirable and for certain 800 ram would be considerably faster than 400.

Answer:Help keyboard won't work at setup

By wired, are you talking the PS/2 style or USB? If they are PS/2, is there any chance you can get your hands on a USB adapter or USB keyboard? XP will take a few seconds and then load the USB drivers, but it sounds like your ps/2 ports might have issues.

I'm storing all of my movies, videos, music on the "Main PC" raid array, and since the mobo has two Ethernet ports, could I connect the one port to my HTPC so I can stream? (other port goes to the router.)

Hopefully the picture will help.

Hey all.. So i'm trying to figure out how I can setup my laptop to work with my 3 Dell S2715h monitors. I have a Latitude E7240 laptop and also have the Dell docking station that came with it. I'm trying to figure out how to get it set up so that I could go from my desktop and then switch to the laptop using all 3 monitors when it's docked. Would I need to get an HDMI splitter? All three monitors are currently hooked up via HDMI. Your input would help! Thanks

Answer:Setup for work laptop

Laptops can only support 2 monitors, the internal and one external. Even with a splitter it will only duplicate the same image on both external monitors, you will need to use separate output cables e.g VGA, HDMI, DVI.

One thing that would work is using a USB video adaptor for a third monitor.

i am a complete beginner and i wanted to know how easy it would be to set up a home network (2 Pc's, a printer and the internet), and what would i need to do it

Answer:net work setup for beginners

To create a wired network for Internet access and File/Printer sharing, you have essentially two options:1) Install a Network Adapter in each PC (if not already installed) and connect them directly with a crossover CAT5 ethernet cable. ?Internet Connection Sharing? is then enabled on the actual Internet connection in the ?host? PC and the ?client? PC will have Internet access provided the ?host? is running and online. To enable ?Internet Connection Sharing? in Windows XP, open the Network Connections folder, right click the actual internet connection (modem connection), select Properties and then the Advanced tab. Tick the box ?Allow other network users to connect through this computer?s Internet connection?.When you enable "Internet Connection Sharing" on the Internet connection, it automatically configures the network adapter used for your "Home Network Connection" with the IP address 192.168.0.1 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0. If you have more than one adapter available for this purpose, e.g. both a "Local Area Connection" and a "Wireless Network Connection", you will have a drop down list from which to select the appropriate adapter. The "Client" PC's Local Area Connection should be set to get its IP address automatically, which it does by DHCP from the "Host" PC. Also, if you run the Zone Alarm firewall in your "Host" PC, the Internet Zone Security level must be reduced from High to Medium or "ICS" traffic will be blocked.2) The preferred option ... Where I work we have dll's that connect to network shares for file access in a format like \\computername\share\file.xml I am going to be working remotely soon and therefore will be doing a lot of work disconnected from our network. When this starts the dlls won't work anymore because they obviously won't be able to find the computer.

I was hoping I could modify my hosts file to route all of the calls to those computers back to my own by using my ip address. I would set up the same folders in hopes that the dlls would continue to function. When I modified my host file to have....

192.168.1.138 publish1

... and then went to start>run>\\publish1 I get a login box. It doesn't matter who I try to login as (currently logged onto the machine under the administrator account) it just comes back to the login box and won't let me get any further.

Does anyone know how I can make this work so that I can make any path point back to my own computer? Thanks.

I have a normal Linksys Cable/DSL 4 port router in which I have the cable from my cable modem plugged into the modem cable port. Then in the 4 other ports I have:

Xbox
My PC
Linksys Wireless-B Access Point (not a access point rounter just an access point)

My internet works on my computer same as on the xbox. I have a Linksys (Wet11) Wireless-B Ethernet Bridge plugged into my other computer. I can't seem to findout how to get my remote computer to access the internet from the access point. Shouldn't the router send the internet signal into the access point then out wirelessly to other computers? I just want to be able to connect to the internet wirelessly on the remote computer same as I can on my main pc. Any help is appreciated.

Answer:Odd Linksys Setup. Not sure if it will work.

You need to configure the WAP from one of the wired workstations for your current network. Is the bridge an actual wireless NIC or just a bridge?

I have a Dell Dimension 8100 desktop with a Phoenix BIOS. The machine was originally an Win 2000/ME computer that was upgraded to WinXP. I can NOT get into setup! I tried all other key combos, I even tried unplugging the hard drive and the CD drive, F2 still does not work! I can not boot from a CD either. How do I get this machine to enter setup!?

Answer:Dell F2 setup does not work

Did you upgrade to the latest BIOS version before you installed XP?

Not saying it's the problem, but it may be part of it.

How much Rambus memory (RAM) do you have installed, by the way?

It's been a while since I've seen a PC that had RIMM modules in it.

Turn off the routing features of the wireless router, just use it as a AP and switch, let the first router do all the routing work.

I have Windows XP Professional installed on my parent's computer alongside Ubuntu Linux. The version of the XP installation that I have is either SP1 or SP2. I think it's SP1. The version of Windows on the system was either SP2 or SP3. My parents got into some state where safe mode will not boot. It just cycles in a loop. Ubuntu works fine. I inserted the XP Pro installation CD and it will not bring me to a menu. It brings me to a screen that tells me to insert bootable media or setup storage device then reboot. So that seems to indicate to me that it's not even recognizing the hard drive. I upgraded to a SATA drive about 4 years ago. Not sure if that's the problem since SATA probably did not exist when I bought the install CD. I'm also using GRUB as my boot manager to switch between Linux / Windows. Anyone know what the issue could be here? What would prevent the setup CD from reaching the Install / Repair Install / Recovery Console screen?

Hello guys,

I'd like to know if there is a more recente version or a way to get the program working.
I can install it, yet, when I open it, it just won't do a thing.
I use a Toshiba Satellite P755.

Thanks to anyone who can help!

I can't afford a true 5.1 Dolby Surround System so I've opted for the Logitech Z506 as it gives a 3D Surround Sound effect and apparently the sound is awesome for the 75w it has. I have a couple of questions on whether the setup I have in mind would work and whether there are any alternatives. First of all, I have a Macbook Pro(late 2011) and it doesn't have the necessary sound card to plug the speakers cables in to create the 5.1 sound so, I want to buy this Audio Dicoder and attach it to my Mac via this cable and plug the speakers cables into the three ports on the decoder. My first question is, would this Toslink cable fit into the regular 3.5mm port on my Mac and second, would this make the audio from my Mac 5.1 Surround Sound. My second query is whether I could plug a second toslink cable(the one that comes with the decoder) into my Xbox 360 and make the audio go 5.1?
Thank you, any and every answer is appreciated, oh and please keep it fairly basic as I am not very experienced. xD

Answer:Will this Logitech Z506 Setup work?

Does the Mac have an optical 3.5mm port? I don't believe that it does. I believe it has a standard 3.5mm analog port. If you have HDMI, you can use that. Otherwise, you will have to use a USB device.

I recently decided my laptop had too much crap on it and neede a wipe. So I backed everything up and popped in my Windows XP CD to reinstall it. For some reason though, when it gets to the partition screen (where you delete/create/choose which partition), one of two things happen. Either it doesn't list any partitions and instead gives me an error message about not being able to find them, or it shows them and when I try to do anything (delete one, create a new one, etc) it blue-screens.

I have tried many tools to partition and/or wipe the hard disk and nothing works. I know there is no physical damage to it because it was working fine before I did anything.

Does anyone know what I can do to solve this? Any tools that will work for sure?

What i mean is when the setup file is started, the hourglass comes into view for about a second then dissappears, but setup does not engage or continue. Computer remains to work ok other than that. Had my computer shut itself off and reboot for the first time as I was registering with this forum, but the setup problem seems to have taken place after an install of another program after the fresh install. I have re-formatted and reinstalled xp pro and now I was able to setup another program but not the one that it worked on before. Seems to be only exe files that it hates. Hi guys,

I have another issue that I could really use some help with. I have a headset for gaming that I have been using for a while. When I plug it into my computer the sound works but the microphone does not. I have recently downloaded the latest version of realtek audio drivers, I have checked this headset on another windows 7 64 bit machine and the microphone works fine, I have made sure that it is plugged into the right ports and everything and that it is not muted in the program that I am trying to use it in. Is there any other checks you guys could guide me to so I can get this thing up and running.

Thanks again your help is always greatly appreciated

Answer:Can't get my headset mic to work in my newish setup

In Control Panel, go to the sound group. There should be three tabs in that window: Playback, Recording, and Sounds. What devices are listed in the Recording tab, and is there anything that looks like an error notification? Such as the words "currently unavailable" or a red X or something like that? Note any changes that occur when you plug in your headset and let me know.

There is a WAMP server (Win 7 pro 32bits) which needs to be accessed over the internet. Access to WAMP from another computer in the local network is ok. Access to Remote Desktop throught the internet also works. But access to WAMP over the internet does not work.

Would like to receive some instruction on how to proceed in order to enable access this web server from the internet.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:How to setup WAMP to work over the internet?

Does your router/default gateway set for the server have NAT running?

The issue with NAT is that any private address is changed to the public address and any connection from the internet will not know what address to reach unless originally initiated by a device (PAT)

May I ask, How are you initiating the Remote Desktop connection? Via hostname or IP address?

Also have you made sure that the correct ports are allowed on the personal firewall of the server (If any) as well as the router itself as this can block certain ports. Please note that it is possible for your ISP to block certain ports depending on the package you have with them however these are normally uncommon ports to prevent malicious attacks.

Many Thanks,
Josh!

I just purchased a new Netgear R7000 router for $200 and within the first week I began having issues. From what I'm reading it's either a bad batch of routers or poor firmware. Considering my goal in spending $200 on a router was to move away from these issues, I think I'm done with all-in-one router/wireless (consumer grade).

I've heard a lot of rave reviews on UniFi and was thinking of returning the R7000 and diving into Ubiquiti. We just purchased a home which does have an attic and a finished basement with a dropped ceiling. So running a conduit for the lines shouldn't be too bad!

My question is, how does the PoE for the AP work? Do I need to get the EdgeRouter PoE or the EdgeRouter Lite with a Tough Switch PoE? I'm looking to NOT install electrical outlets near each AP and want to run the APs strictly off of PoE.

The house is a 1,500sqft bi-level ranch with 3 bedrooms. For starters, I was going to pick up one Unifi Enterprise AP (2.4Ghz) and a router to run it with. Once 802.11ac matured a bit I would then replace or add to the network. I figured running the AP on the 2nd floor, at the center of the house, should cover just fine..?

My wish-list was going to be:

Ubiquiti Enterprise AP

Router

What suggestions do you guys have for a Ubiquiti install?

Thanks!

Answer:Moving to Ubiquiti setup - how does their PoE work?

That setup should work. I know the UAP and UAP-LR don't use standard PoE (UAP-Pro and UAP-AC do), but the EdgeRouter should be running the UBNT PoE and standard PoE. I do suggest checking their data sheets and/or the UBNT forums.

The placement and running of cabling sounds fine, I know the range on UAP are great. So you're aware, the WAP doesn't have a built-in web interface to program it. You will need to setup the Controller software on a computer or laptop so you can program the WAP after it's physically installed. Following the EdgeMax guides should help you setup the router quickly. I just setup the EdgeRouter Lite last night using them, works wonderfully.

The company I work for runs 100 UAP & UAP-LR, we love the products. I really wish we could get a sample box of everything UBNT does so we can play with them. I believe I can find a use for everything they make. Just need to do some testing before we deploy anything.

Hello
i have just bought a totally new setup today, and ive plugged and mounted everything into the chassi.. but i dont get a video signal from it, when i plug in the screen into the pc it just goes from "check cable connection" to "no video input" and nothing happens.. all the fans from the cpu, chassi and grafic card are running, and all lighs and LEDīs are working.. just no picture at all (and therefor not much i can do). ive tried using the sceen with another computer and it works fine.

since its brand new i havent even gotten to install windows on it yet so im 100% sure its something with the hardware/seetup offcourse..

after checking all the power cables i couldnt find anything wrong with what i had done.. so i took the motherboard out of the chassi to be sure it wasnt hitting it in any way.. i also tried with an old Geforce 9600 grafic card from my old pc to see if that would work, but it had the same result.

then i decided to try and set it up so i had minimal things connectet..
so now it have the powersupply plugged in, with power going into the motherboad in 2 places (24pin and 8pin) the cpu is mounted (and plugged into the motherboad in the correct place) the grafic card is set in place in the PCI x16_1 slot and have its two power sources plugged in (8pin and 4pin.. with the 4pin being a special 2 into 1 power plug for ekstra power) and i still get the same result..

i really need help to figuring out this problem please

Sincerely

Hello,

I've jumped into Vista x64 and am loving it so far, got everything worked out in hardware and software, until now.

I have a program I'm trying to install whose setup file is a "32-bit Setup Launcher" (also the description name in Task Manager).

However, nothing happens, it just remains in the windows process list but doesn't install. I've already ticked XP compatibility mode, and run as administrator.

The setup file is below (7MB). It's a special DVD format authoring tool called Discwelder Bronze.

http:// masi.hosting4less.com/Demos/discWelderBRONZEDemo.exe

(manually extract for the setup file).

Will I have to rig up a dualboot with my old x86 Vista in order to use it?
The only other program I have that doesn't work, is MARIO & LUIGI ().

Okay so I thought I was decent with computers and decided to try to fix my dell laptop myself. Everytime that I turned it on my background came up and this message popped up: "windows cannot find 'C:\WINDOWS\svchost.exe' Make sure you typed the name correctly then try again. To search for a file, click the start button then click search" Nothing else would appear-no icons, no mouse that was movable, etc. So, I'd hold down the power button and restart when the window to choose between that and shutting down popped up. Then, the computer seemed to work fine, except being slow and freezing periodically.

I was still worried and when I checked various support sites forums, they all stated that this svchost.exe message was a virus which could cause a hacker to get into your computer and it would display in your taskmanager under processes. I had about 5 or 6 svchosts on the list so I figured this is what happened to me (because I know only one of those is supposed to be there). They all said that using the restore cd to get your computer to original settings was the only way to be sure it was gone. I did that and now chaos has broken out!

1. I can't tell if the virus is truly gone because pretty much all of my old program files were still on C: but not on the program list. Plus the 5 or 6 svchost.exe's are still on my taskmanager! It no longer freezes and goes faster but I still don't wanna risk the virus not being gone.

Hi lbsweetz,

Welcome to TSG!

First, svchost.exe usually has multiple copies running at the same time. I run WinXP Pro SP2 and usually have 4 instances of svchost.exe running at any one time. I think I may have counted up to six at one time. So, that is not the issue unless your svchost.exe has been hijacked by malware that is using it to disguise itself.

Ok, let me start off with, this might be in the right section, but then again it might belong in Software, so if it does im really sorry Mods.

I work for a small Law Firm, i was hired as an intern because i am a Pre-Law major in College and i needed an internship. Well anyways my internship ended and they hired me on as an IT guy. Because they can hire me for $12 and hour while the other IT guy they usually use is about $100 an hour, and i know more on the software/workstation side of things than he does. He does all the networking/mail server/DHS setup/etc. He does not know how to fix the default template in MS Word back to the original one, and it takes him HOURS to do that when he finally figures it out (so it costs them ~$400 for that little bit of work). Anyways enough with the back story.

We are flat broke, because we hired a bunch of new people. So we cannot get new computers like i suggested to them last year. We currently have some crappy Dell computers, they are not even the OptiPlex's they are the home editions (i cannot recall what they are called right now). Anyways they are about 1.5-2.5Ghz with 128-256 mb or Ram, and of course integrated graphics card.

So they put so much CRAP on them that it takes literally hours to boot and get to a working desktop. I have setup a schedule to take their computers and reformat them, now the question i have is, what rights should i give them? Should i set them up with "limited" rights so they cannot install A... Hi, I just got this motherboard,Asus model A7V8X-MX, I finished building the system, and went to set up the bios (award bios 6.0) only to discover that the keyboard would not work. I tried this with several new keyboards, and it still did not work. All I got was the bios telling me to hit del for setup, and when I hit delete, nothing would happen. It also said what my CPU was, and memory, which it got correctly. Upon startup the three lights on the keyboard blink on and off once at the same time, so I know that the keyboard is in correctly, and I tried it in both the keyboard and mouse ports to no avail. What's the problem here? it's a new board, why isn't it working? Please help!
Cory Luquet
PS: I tried replacing the battery upon the suggestion of something on a message board, and it did not work. Also, if you need my system specs, they are as follows:

40gig Maxtor 7200rpm HD
sony 52x cd-rom

I got a buddy who's starting to dabble a lot in photo and video work (mainly photography and tapes to digital/DVD conversions). His 600 GB C: drive just filled up and instead of installing a bigger internal or external drive I imagine I should do more than throw storage at the problem. I haven't had a client who works with multimedia before so what kind of setup is recommended in terms of storage and workspace/scratch space? A NAS server with a couple of TB drives in a RAID to meet storage demands? Or Firewire 800 external drive instead? 10,000 or 15,000 RPM drives so he doesn't get dropped frames during video conversions?

Thanks in advance

P.S. - He's running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and most of his equipment isn't newer than those equipped with regular Firewire (400)

I work for a small family business (25 emp). I've been working from home a lot more recently and they would like to set up a site to site an IP/sec VPN connection some standard cisco hardware.

They want to set everything up on my lan- 192.168.1.X. and also need a DDNS account in order to log in remotely if necessary, (im using a non-business ISP account, so no static IP)

Is it possible for me to setup a VLAN to segregate their corp network , and have a DDNS address point to only that specific VLAN ? I just want to make sure they can only log in remotely and see only their stuff.

Answer:Need advice : Work asking to be on personal network...best way to setup?

Yes yes and yes, but I'd use a pair of Zyxel Zywall 110s for this. No need to pay crazy cisco rates for a SMB case like this. Hell, buy a third one as a backup. and you'll still be farther ahead than going cisco.

Just make sure to export the config for both devices when you are done and keep the config backups handy and near.

Also if they already have Cisco ASA.... the zywall 110 will interface with that too with no issues.

Answer:SATA hard Drive work with IDE setup ?

If you wish to install in your pc then you will require a pci sata controller.

Otherwise you can buy a sata external caddy and use it for storage

OK I want to have all my music (which I legally own) stored on a hard drive so that i can access it from my computer and via a wireless music reciever connected to my stereo.I was wanting to use a 320Gb NAS connected to my wireless router to do this. My questions are as follows?1. Is this even possible?2. Do I need any software on the NAS to allow the music to stream?3. I saw an Asus wireless router with a 160Gb hard drive built in which uses itunes media server. Would this be a better option? (although it costs the same as the wireless receiver and 320Gb NAS I have been looking at.)

Answer:Wireless music server. Will this setup work?

Guys have you got any idea why this error "windows setup could not configure windows to run on this computer's hardware" shows up when installing 7 on my Comp? It comes up when the installer reaches the final stage of installation where it says , "Completing installation".
I have purchased this darn Ultimate edition of 7 for 464 bucks from the local stores.
i have Satellite A300 PSAGCA - 03C010 Toshiba P8400 Notebook.
4Gb Ram
2.27Ghz Core2Duo
Windows vista ultimate x64 and home premium x86....the 7 edition is x86.
Service pack 2
.......It works well on my other comp that runs home basic, and it's compaq 1.86Ghz.
i dont' know what's wrong with mine.

Answer:Windows setup couldn't work on this hardware

Are you trying to in-place Upgrade from Vista? If so, try backing up your files, boot the DVD to do a formatted clean install.

Check on its Support Downloads page that your Toshiba has the latest BIOS version.

Try setting SATA controller at AHCI to start, then IDE.

Use WIndows Memory Diagnostics to test RAM, then remove all but 2gb of RAM to try again. Switch RAM sticks if this fails.

If you paid $464 for ultimate you were robbed by retailer at least 200%. I would take it back and get a retail Upgrade Ultimate version for 1/3 of that price at BestBuy or NewEgg.

Hi,

Just setting up windows 10 with a 256GB SSD and 1TB HDD - got the Windows installed on the SSD and setup HDD as a D Drive for Data.

I have gone to Settings > System > Storage and changed the default documents, music, pictures "Save Locations" to the D Drive (HDD) so it doesn't fill my SSD. The issue I have is when I go to Documents and save it still saves to the C Drive Documents folder instead.

1) If this setting doesn't change the location for documents, pictures folders whats the point of it?

2) I understand I can manually change the Documents, Pictures & Music location if I right click on them but will this have any effect on the system? As in does this need to be changed in the registry so everything in the system knows the Documents is now on the D Drive?

Thanks for help

I've just installed a Belkin N1 wireless router to connect the wifes laptop to my Virgin cable broadband connection. The auto set up won't work. When I click continue to start the process, I'm met with a blank window that never changes. Windows task manager shows 0% for the setup task. I seem to have managed to connect her somehow, but download speeds are about 6Kbps. Thats on a 10Meg connection. I can't find anywhere on my PC to show the wireless network or what other wirelss items are around. Where should I be looking? No software seems to have been installed, can I adjust her connection speed? Limit it to say 2Meg of my 10Meg?Also can I share the printer with her over this or is it the wrong type of hardware for that?

Answer:Wireless router auto setup wont work

To find network connections on PC - Start>Connect to>Show all connections. But you would probably get more response if you posted this in the Networking forum. If you do move this to the Networking forum, don't forget to Green-tick this Thread - don't want two Threads on same subject.

Hi david9562 and welcome to TSF !

Switch for a regular PS/2 keyboard for the time of the installation, you'll be able to use your own keyboard once Windows is installed.

Make sure you've backed up all your data on a different physical drive before you go the format/reinstall from scratch way.

Answer:Portege 3500 - Common module setup not work

Hi

I checked the Toshiba European page and found Prot?g? 3500 Common Modules for XP tabled edition version 5.04.00TE

The whole package should be downloaded firstly, then unzip it and then execute the setup.exe file.

In many cases you will not see anything on the display because the whole installation procedure runs in the background.
However, I recommend downloading it again, unzipping it correctly and then to repeat the installation.

Bye

Answer:SnapGear SG300 Setup VPN to work with TheGeenBow Client

Based on my guess as to the tunnel settings, your local interface is probably incorrect. You need to use the interface which as the 192.168.1.2 IP address. The tunnel settings define which interface you are accepting VPN tunnel on. Obviously you're not going to establish a VPN tunnel on the private side from a WAN side/outside host.

Also, I'm guessing you're trying to allow a VPN client from across the internet to connect to this VPN router but with the Netgear router as your ISP connected edge router in between.

My signature Pc, the one I had problems last week is misbehaving again.

It hangs while trying to Boot at the "glowing-pulsing colors" thingie.

If i try to boot in Safe mode it Hangs at CLASSPNP.SYS

If i boot from the Windows Setup DVD , or a repair DISK I've made, and i choose to do a repair, nothing happens, it either says it repaired the disk but nothing changes, or says it doesn't find anything to fix.

I'm attaching a ntbtlog.txt in case anyone makes heads or tails with it. It worries me that i see so many things not loading properly.

Thanks in advance guys, you;ve saved my bacon a couple of times in these forums, i hope you an help again..

Answer:PC Hangs on Boot And on Safe mode at CLASSPNP.SYS, Setup-fix not work

PS all this happened after it crashed 4 times in a row while playing Fallout New Vegas. the 4th time the PC froze, Ctrl-Lat-Del wasn't working, the mouse was dead and then the Keyboard as well.

I had to do a cold reset. and that was it.

Last week i had similar problems as detailed here: http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...angs-boot.html but i solved them after copying a new version of CLASSPNP.SYS from another PC.
