Preferred Solution: Restore doesn't work...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a 4y old Sony VAIO (VGN-NS11J) that stopped working today morning after making a whirring noise

Repeated attempts to restart failed and after many attempts, I managed to get to the Startup Repair mode - after a long time, startup repair says it failed to automatically repair the problem

I managed to run system restore but after a while I got the following message: "System restore failed due to an unspecified error. The disk strucgture is corrupted and unreadable (0X80070571)

My laptop did not come with a Windows Vista CD/Recovery disk

My first priority is to recover a few files in the laptop - if I am able to do this, then I dont mind junking the laptop

Since this is an old laptop, I would prefer not to use an expensive professional to recover the data

Any help/suggestions would be much appreciated!

Rgds

In the past I used to just copy my stuff and then when Windows went up, you know slows down, get's corrupted somewhere, etc. I would reinstall windows and then my drives, apps, programs, files, etc. Upon my studies I learned that the default Windows backup could do these things as well as recover system state. Well I started doing backups every so often on my home PC and my server at work. The other day I actually needed to use it as my PC had this weird issue of clicking on icon executables and not ever running them. It would refuse to start programs from the executable in the folder under program files, under start menu, or command line. It wouldn't give an error it would just click and go away. Strange huh? It would do it once the computer was on for a while and for a week or two I just would reboot, but I mean come on, that's a little annoying.

So I had a backup but it was 8 months old, but it was made on the same machine. I go Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Backup to launch it. I figure I should at least try it if I'm studying MS systems to say I've done it. I choose restore, but not the wizard, choose return system to previous state by selecting the check mark for C and also for "System State". It returns icons on the desktop of what was their months back so I assume it worked, it asks to reboot, sure go ahead. I try to boot up again, and blue screen, back to BIOS, Select startup of windows pops up. Fine I th... Read more

In early January, I made a post about a restore problem. Thought that it was cleared up. I am unable to acess any of my or XP's restore points. When I went to restore to an earlier date. All appeared to be going as it should. However, when I got to my profile a message window came up that said unable to restore to (chosen date/time) etc. I chose 3 other restore points over the last month, thinking it might be some recent problem, still a no go. Any help would be greatly appreciated? Is there a utility to use to check and see if there is something corrupted? If I need an HJT Log let me know and I'll repost.

Thanks, Golferguy

My Win 7 was installed in February 2010 and at first I could use System Restore without problems. However, after some time it stopped working due to unknown reasons and now when I try to do a System Restore it looks as if it is going to be OK, but when it restarts I see the following error message:

You can try System Restore again and choose a different restore point. If you continue to see this error, you can try advanced recovery method. For more information, see What is Recovery?

I tried to fix it by doing the following things:

1) Perform SFC /SCANNOW

it returns the following message:

I have just purchased a new HP PC running Vista Home Premium. I have had major problems with the new system, one of which is that System Restore won't work properly. It will load (after about 5 minutes) and will create a new restore point but, when I try restore to an earlier time, it goes through the motions for about 10 to 15 minutes but fails to restore. I get a message saying that due to an error (unspecified) no files were changed. Can anybody help please?

My suggestion, Do not mess about with it, contact the retailer as it a faulty item and demand a replacement or your money back.Terry

Hi! I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 running XP Professional.  I have plenty of memory (M), plenty of available hard drive space (50 GB) and a non-working system restore feature.  It did work until about 2 months ago.  When I attempt to use it it goes through the restart and then says that it cannot restore my machine.  No matter which highlighted date I select, I get the same response.  I've increased the memory space for it, I've tried manually creating restore points--always the same response.  HELP!!!                                                                                                                       Eric

My father just switched from dial-up to broadband. When the broadband is connected, the computer starts trying to send out an endless amount of emails. The funny thing is that we can still use dial-up without the flood of emails. I downloaded Norton Internet Security 2007 and have everything up to date. There were several infections/trojans detected and, supposedly, removed. I tried to do a system restore, but I keep getting the messages "Restoration Incomplete" and "No changes have been to your computer". I opened up System Properties to try to turn system restore on and then off again, but it won't give me the option. On top of this, we now get about 10 attempted Portscan intrusions per day. I'm at a total loss!

In such situations, I'd suggest saving all your data and doing a clean install of Windows if you feel confident in that.

Hello, I need help. My niece downloaded a windows 7 ultimate and installed it on her computer on a website called demonod.com (I am not sure of the name of the website.) The problem is the 30 day activation is almost over and I don't know what will happen next. I wanted to use the recovery partition disk on the computer to return the computer to original state, but it does not work. I activated the recovery partition restart the computer and pressed F11 but it does not work. I really suspect it is some kind of malware that came with the windows 7 ultimate.

I did all the preparation test but combofix will not run neither rootrepeal. So did a GMER scan instead.

I struggled for a long time to get a home network working between two computers with XP.

I thought, as a safeguard, I would create a restore point on both machines as soon as I was satisifed that everything was working correctly - which was a couple of weeks ago.

For reasons unknown, the network stopped working yesterday.

I tried restoring to the point I created immediately after establishing the network, but was successful on only one of the two machines, the other one displaying the message that the system was unable to restore, etc, etc.

Why? What can happen which makes a restore point unavailable?

Answer:Why doesn't a restore point work?

Restore points have a very limited life, the oldest being discarded to make room for the latest. Had the restore point you wanted simply disappeared, or did the restore fail?

Restore points do not fully restore a computer either, just selected files. You need to use an imaging program to fully 'go backl'.

My Vista hasn't been able to update since I had a nasty virus two winters ago (during which a number of files were lost.) My Internet has been slow lately and so, I decided to restore the system. When restarting with the diagnostics screen the first few options wouldn't work, but some at the bottom would--including system image factory restore. I ran this and for a time it ran fine, until an 'error' box came up. Since then, no matter what I press, Windows does not come up--only the diagnostic screen! (Also the screen turns green with a black line near the top every time I shut down or restart.)

Help, please!

Problem: Windows Backup and Restore does not work. When the link is clicked, nothing happens.

Background: At one point Acronis True Image Home was installed. The uninstaller left behind an entry in key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{B98A2BEA-7D42-4558-8BD1-832F41BAC6FD} that continues to point to Acronis True Image Home.

My research indicates that this is an issue known to Acronis. They have made a "fix" available which is supposed to restore Windws 7 Backup and Restore functionality. The "fix" is a registry entry "ResourceDLL.reg" which is to be merged into the registry.

However. when merger is attempted the message "Cannot import ...... Some keys are open by the system or other processes" is displayed.

I have tried starting the computer is Safe Mode but the same message is displayed.

I have tried to manually make the change via regedit but get the message "Cannot edit Rescorce.DLL. Error writing the value's new contents.

Ownership and permissions for the key have been changed.

These have had no effect - the same message is shown when merger/editing is attempted.

It would appear that the change must be entered before Windows 7 starts but I have been unable to find a way to do that.

Looking for assistance in getting the Acronis "fix" implemented.

Thx,
C.

Answer:Backup and Restore Doesn't Work

ALSO -FYI! I saw the previous post about this issue, but the solution posted does not work on my machine even after making the ownership and permissions changes suggested.

I submitted a concern earlier that has gone unanswered. No problem I appreciate any help I can get.

I went ahead and upgraded to the "pro" version or malwarebytes and routinely now see a message indicating that I have been successfully blocked from a potentially malicious site: Type "outgoing"

I have tried to undo some things using System Restore .... this appears to work but fails just after the reboot in the process. Are these things related? Is there a remedy?

I run XP in a Dell Inspiron with Norton AntiVirus. I tried System Restore a week ago, but it didn't work. It ran but at the end I got the error message that it didn't complete and couldn't restore to the earlier point. It displayed the red "X." I deleted all of the restore points and set the amount of store to the maximum and set a new restore point. Still it didn't complete. I also ran Malwarebytes - it couldn't find any issues.

I tried it in Safe Mode and it worked - it set the new point and renamed three files - two of them were Norton files, the third I didn't recognize. I set a new point and again it DID NOT COMPLETE - I got the same error message!!

Sorry for the long message, but I wanted you to know I already tried some troubleshooting. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I got rid of all the viruses I had using some handy tools I found and now whenever I do a scan, no threats or viruses of any kind are found, as opposed to the 3-4 that were always detected when I did certain scans. I thought this was the problem with my PC which for some reason didnt allow me to create a restore point using System Restore. But now, even when it seems to be clean and uninfected (this is not 100% fully confirmed, I'm about to do a Kasperspy thorough online scan to see what it detects if anything), it still doesnt allow me to create a restore point. I'm thinking there must be something wrong with my system registry or something. Is there anything I can do? Need your help please!

Good day,
I went to do a backup after last W7 update. The external SATA drive was not recognized. Found it inactive and without a drive letter and set them. Unit works on other computers with a USB. Ran a sfc /scannow with errors that couldn't be corrected. Attempted a restore which after reboot fails. Did a system image restore to a preupdate version (Paragon), apparently successfully. sfc still shows errors.
I am asking if I should go directly to the update section and do the MS download and gather the CBS.log?
Oh an of course lost the registration for the W10 download.
Thanks for pointing me in a correct direction!

Got the Windows 10 registration back and my emails. Reran the SURT and sfc /scannow. sfc still indicating it has corrupted files...
Would appreciate any help!!

Answer:System restore doesn't work

Restore what you deleted from the AdAware backup. Maybe it will put the association back. The downside is that it will also restore whatever adware you were trying to get rid of in the first place. That may, or may not, work. Maybe it's worth a try, though. If it does work, there are other ways to get rid of that particular piece of adware/spyware besides AdAware.

If that fails, post back. There are some command line restorations that can be done.

Hi everyone, this is my first post so please be gentle if I break protocol or seem stupid or something. >_> <_<

Anyway, I'm having a really frustrating problem...I tried uninstalling a program with Windows Install Cleanup, but it didn't get all the files apparently - it was still showing up in the start menu and Programs and Features. Well, I thought, no big deal, I'll just do a system restore to before I installed it (I was trying the program out and I didn't like it, so it was only a couple days ago) but now I've run into a bigger problem...

I try to do system restore, and it seems to go fine, but when the computer reboots it tells me:

"System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.

Details:

System Restore failed to extract the file (C:\ProgramData\Trusteer\Rapport\store) from the restore point.
An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0x80070005)"

I've tried 3 different restore points and keep getting this same message, although sometimes the file it can't extract is C:\ProgramData\Trusteer\Rapport\store\app-config.cfg

Please help! I don't know what to do now. The program's "ghost" is still on my computer, but that's not nearly as worrisome as the inability to system restore at this point. What should I do?

Answer:System Restore Doesn't Work?

Hello,

To fix this problem you should downloaded Rapport again directly from here:
http://download.trusteer.com/Gcur4Wtnu/RapportSetup.exe
Or from our website www.trusteer.com

Once you have installed and restarted the computer the System restore should work.

Lately, there have been some problems with my computer. I've uninstalled AVG because of a very annoying error message 'the application has failed to start because of a configuration error' or something like that. Answer:System Restore Doesn't Work?!

Windows Live Messenger fails to go online, it simply terminates itself. Also, after executing drwtsn32.exe and launching System Restore, it says rstrui.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created.

Hey!I have ''IdeaCentre K450 Desktop'' http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/desktops-and-all-in-ones/ideacentre-k-series-desktops/ideac... Factory Restore using F11 doesn't work for me. Can some one tell me what to do if F11 doesn't work ? what must I do before that? and how?thank you!

Answer:Factory Restore using F11 doesn't work

Hi Waelsi,

Welcome to Lenovo forums

As I understood that you are facing the issue with the f11 key which is for the factory restore.

This issue occurs when there is a change in partition in the HDD. However the one key recovery works for this system. Press f2 key for the one key recovery once you turn on the system.

Hope this helps! Do post us back for further queries.

I have a 3 yr old HP computer. VISTA, IE8. The System Restore does not work. I have tried on several occasions over the past 3 yrs to use system restore to correct a problem. It has never worked. I had the same problem when I had a DELL computer with Windows XP.

Answer:System Restore Doesn't Work

Is system restore turned ON and configured?

System restore sometimes has problems with proprietary chipset drivers; ie drivers written for a big box system.

FWIW system restore is pretty useless; a MUCH better option is to make an image backup of your system drive. With the price of hard drives so cheap AND the image software being free, there is no reason to not have an image backup.

In trying to solve a problem I've been having with VPN (I think? see post here), I've tried to use System Restore in order to go back to a working configuration. Problem is, for some reason, System Restore refuses to restore my system. Every time I try to go back to a restore point, the computer shuts down, restarts, ostensibly tries to restore ths system -- I see a meter going up indicating how long it has left to restore the system -- but then just boots back up with a cryptic "System Restore was not able to restore your system. No changes have been made" message. How can I get this to work? Thanks.

Every time I leave my computer on, inactive, for a long time it freezes so I am forced to turn the power off. But when I try to start it up again Windows loads up until the point where it says: "Welcome" and just freezes. I started the system repair disk, and when I choose "Recover" a list of restore points appears just fine. It's until the system restore its done running that it gives me a message saying:"System Restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point. Source %SystemRoot%\registrarionDestination: ComPlusStaging"I have tried several different restore points but I get the same result. I've also tried to use System Image but every time I try to make an image it also fails! I have ran my antivirus software several times and nothing. I can, however, run my computer in safe mode. And running the "last know configuration that worked" also worked. But it's the inability to create any safety nets that I am concerned about. Any light you can shed on this I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.PS.I don't have the installation CD

Answer:Windows 7 System Restore Doesn't Work

This honestly sounds like a bug within your current Windows 7 installation. If its throwing out that error while trying to do a restore then it sounds like Windows 7 has corruptions in it, in more than one spot. What I would do is either format the hard drive and use the system restore CD to re-install the operating system, or.. if you have data on it you need to keep, purchase a new hard drive and install it on there.

Well that was annoying.  I did a clean install of 64-bit Win 7 onto my new X100e and now the ability to do a Factory Restore from the hidden partition has gone away. When I did the clean install (64-bit Win7 Pro replacing 32-bit Win7 Pro), I left the hidden partition alone, and I left the Lenovo Recovery partition alone.  I installed the OneKey Recovery software--but that was when I was just trying stuff--OKR's not really for the Factory Restore anyway (or at leasst it doesn't seem that way).  I did *not* install all the other drivers yet (audio, video, bluetooth, etc.) but I can't imagine that should make a difference.  Anyway, so just as a test, as soon as I had the new version of Win 7 installed, I tested the Factory Restore operation ... Reboot, press Enter to interrupt it, Then press F11 to Restore.  Nothing.  It just proceeded into a normal boot--back into 64-bit Win 7. Good thing I made the recovery disks and backed up SWTOOLS.  But I sure can't figure out how installing a new OS into the main partition--especially since I left the hidden and Lenovo Recovery partitions untouched--would affect how the BIOS handles the bootup and restore function.  The function was working perfectly before all this (I tested that, too.)  Maybe it's the drivers ... maybe something like the Device Experience drivers change the boot somehow?  Maybe some BIOS setting that installing Win 7 changes?  Like maybe Win 7 64 made... Answer:Factory Restore using F11 at boot doesn't work

Factory restore is an incredibly fragile feature. You have not only to avoid the mbr overwriting, but also not touch the boot settings stored inside BCD. Is almost impossible to install anything W/O breaking  the F11 feature. So the short answer is burn the recovery discks and don't count on F11 . A bit longer answer can be: make active the second partiton ( C: ) before installing the vanilla  Win 7. So the new installation will put it's bootloader there, leaving untouched the customized bootsector on the first one ( S: ).  P.S.You must create the recovery media before doing anything or the broken bootsector will be transferred on the recovery media. P.S.2 there is a recovery floppy that rewrites the mbr, meant to fix the problem. Unluckily doesn't fix  the latest recovery sw.

I'm running Win7 Home Premium 64bit. When I try to do a System Restore, it seems to run to completion, reboots the system and then issues the following message:

"System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed."

Same result in Safe mode.
Same result with AV disabled. (Kaspersky Internet Security 12)

Answer:Win7 HP 64b system restore doesn't work

Hello Toadstoll Welcome to the Seven Forums!

Would this be on a custom build where you installed Windows yourself or on an OEM premade system?

The most likely problem you ran into was a bad restore point. That can happen on occasion when you only have one or two depending the time of the month and seeing the older ones automatically being cleaned up.

Every so often a bad point is created where choosing the next older if found would be the next step. That would be the first suggestion to start with by opening the restore option again to see how many points are still seen to try another to go back a little further to see if that goes well on the next try.

Other things like running the System File Checker tool can help with minor problems. But if you are stuck trying to remove a new program tracking down entries in the system registry can be tricky at times for seeing it manually removed.

I tried to use the System Restore function on my HP and it runs, but gives a message that System Restore can't complete and doesn't work. I even manually set a Restore point and tried to go back and restore using it, but got same message?

Do I have any options, such as reinstall Restore or is there something else I can do?

Thanks for any help.

I noticed about a week ago that my system won't go to sleep unless I force it to sleep using the using the Function and F1 buttons on the keyboard. I also noticed about the same time that I tried to set it to use the ribbon screen saver and that doesn't work either. The screen saver looks fine in preview but it won't start up on it's own.

I tried working through the "Vista sleep problems" tutorial that was posted in a previous thread but none of that helped. I also tried doing a system restore several times and each time I get a window telling me that "system restore did not complete successfully becasue system restore couldn't access a file, probably due to anti-virus software. An unspecified error occured during system restore 0x80070005." I've tried disabling Norton Anti Virus and running system restore -- same result.

The rest of my system seems to be running fine and I really don't want to get into advanced recovery methods or doing a full restore of Windows if I don't have to. I don't know if this would matter but I did install a second internal HDD. It's not in any kind of RAID configuration or anything. I use it to capture/store video footage and I keep backup copies of several personal folders on it. I think sleep was working for a time after I installed the second drive.

Any advice to get sleep to function again? Thanks.

Thanks.

Answer:Won't sleep; system restore doesn't work

Try running SFC, might be a corrupt dll.

I think i did something really wrong... i had a registry backup on my desktop and i wanted to move it to another area on my computer. And now i have several problems.... too many to mention but here's a few: anything windows site or microsoft site related cant get in....cant do any online banking or access anything goverment related... windows media player dont work...outlook express settings were changed and look of it was different...cant access certain things on my start menu or by clicking on start>all programs> and certain stuff on from there...etc. It seems like the computer might have gone back to a time when the registry backup on desktop was created....don't know. Answer:Restore function doesn't work anymore

It sounds as if System Restore may have become corrupted. You can try reinstalling the feature. Here's how:In Control Panel or Windows Explorer, click Folder Options and then View tab
Under Advanced Settings, scroll down and find "Show hdden files and folder." Check the box.
Find "Hide extensions for known files types." Uncheck that box. Click Apply, OK.
In Windows Explorer, find your Windows folder (usually on the C: drive but not always). Navigate to the inf folder and open it.
Find a file named sr.inf
Right click the file and select Install.

Important: This creates a new installation of System Restore, but it will delete any restore points that you had created previously.

Hi all
I wanted to do a system restore but it didn't work.
My computer has two hard drives, C:\ and D:\ and a CD drive E:\, I also plug a portable hard drive into it from time to time that shows up as F:\.
So I try to run system restore and it brings up a warning that it will not be able to change anything on F: because it is no longer available (I think that was the massage, something like that anyway), okay it was not plugged into the computer so I click to go ahead with the restore. The computer looks like it's doing its restore thing, tha bar graph runs and all but when it should be finished it tells me nothing was changed so pick an earlier restore dat and try again so I did that, same F: drive warning, same results. I plug the portable disk in and try again, same thing.
How can I get the System Restore to work???

Thanks in advance

I'm in it to my knees. The long and short of it is I bought a new hard drive, mine is on the verge of failure. I thought I could use the Repair CD's I got from Microsoft to reinstall, then just re-register it with the OEM license. Acer tells me this isn't possible that the motherbd won't recognize it. They said it has to be done using the original OEM edition of Vista. I can't find it.

I tried the next best thing, I was going to restore to factory settings and create a new copy, can't do the either because the eRecovery doesn't work. I've hit alt F10 until I'm blue in the face. I then went into computer files and checked the Acer files. eRecovery is there, it just doesn't work when I try booting to alt F10.
I did find a backup of all of my Acer files that I made last year, the original is 2007. I checked it against what is on the computer. Sure enough some of the Acer files are missing. On the backup is a file called Acer Inc., inside it is another folder marked eRecovery, inside that is a application file called D2D??? Is that what opens the eRecovery environment? I contacted Acer, their response was. "You are out of warranty, for a fee we will be happy to help you although we can't guarantee results". In plain English, give us some money and go to hell.

I can't even do an upgrade to windows 7 because I have to have the OEM license to back it up with. Without the OEM license the... Read more

Answer:Restore to factory setting doesn't work

George, Just a few thoughts to get started.

Are you shure the old hard drive didn't have the recovery partition on it? That would explain a lot.
eRecovery must be something like an Acer restore CD?? Can you boot to it with the famous hit any key when it tries to boot from CD? If it isn't booting to the CD then you need to get into the BIOS and make sure CD is first in boot order. If it still doesn't work, try cleaning the laser eye or replace your CDROM altogether.

D2D normally stands for Disk to Disk

As far as the OEM license there is almost always a MS Certificate of Authentification Sticker with the Product Key on it.

I'm back again with another problem

System Restore has worked fine for me (xp pro) until yesterday.
I tried to restore to the day before and it went through the motions (blue line showing restoration, etc.) but after it rebooted the restore screen came up and said it was unable to restore my computer.

So I went back 2 days and tried it - same result. Back 3 days same result.

The error msg gave no explanation other than it could not restore my computer.

I don't use restore that much but it makes me kinda nervous knowing it doesn't work.

Thanks for your help.

Answer:(Resolved) System Restore Doesn't Work

Well, I dunno, never happened to me. But I'd go to the System Restore settings and disable system restore. I believe that will delete the old, possibly corrupt, restore points. Reboot. Then go back into System Restore, change the Settings to enable monitoring, and create a new restore point. See if the new one works.

I recently installed new hard-drives, 1 master and 1 slave. I still have all of my data from the new drive transfer, I can install and run programs on my new drive, but some of existing applications aren't working properly.

The most critical is my problem with " System Restore". Everytime I run System Restore from the Start Menu > Accessories > ... , I get the pop up for debugging it. The pop up is the grey box that says "Send Error Report or Don't Send". While it was working I used it everyday, but now it always crashes when I open it up. What happens if something bad happens to my PC, how will I be able to restore my PC to an earlier secure stage? Please help me, it's critical that I get use of my System Restore back again. Do I have to reinstall WinXP again or what?

Microsoft Word keeps telling me to "repair" the program everytime I open up a word document. Now, I'm able to open up a word document, read it, edit and save. But when I open them up it also talks about the repair, a "Windows Installer" box pops up, then disappears, afterwards telling me to reinstall\repair Word 10.0 or something like that because there's an error in Microsoft Office. Should I reinstall\repair my Microsoft Office CDs?

Hi
My computer crashed whiles I was updating Firefox and downloading an online game from steam.
I was given the blue screen of death but I restarted my computer and login in as normal per user name, a messaged appeared saying that windows had recovered from a serious error. I have tried to roll back using system restore but the dates it has given me is not working and saying its incomplete every time.
When I login on my computer the same error message appears but no blue screen.
Has windows ended that support for windows xp?
Is there any way around this except moving to another operating system as my computer is quite old it wouldn't have enough space and memory to handle it.

Answer:System restore doesn't work on Windows XP

"Has windows ended that support for windows xp?"
No, it has nothing to do with that. The support that has ended is the Security Updates. Nothing else was ever supported unless you had a contract with MS.
Have you tried unplugging all extras - printer and anything attached by usb and unplug the ethernet cable (internet) - then booting up into Safe Mode and trying the System Restore.

Hello Cross,Because you have an HJT log posted, as you stated above, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer. From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient. Hi,
The problem started a few days ago, Sunday I believe. Anyway started up laptop and could not connect to internet. Looked up Device manager and the wireless card had a yellow triangle with a ! in it. Assumed I had done something so went to System Restore and set a point. There was a warning, however, after it finished stating the Restore did not complete and gave options to do it again.

The curious thing was I had wireless internet, despite it stating the System Restore was unsuccessful. Closed the LT and started it back up. No internet. Ran SR again and again it notified me it was not successful, but I again had wireless internet.

I ran every test possible for the network and internet. The result was "no connections available. Plug in an Ethernet cable." I have internet with cable. tried to update the card's driver and it says I have the latest driver. One of the Intel tests said something about the digital certificate.

Ran all your tests and am at your mercy looking for guidance...thanks.

Answer:Can't Use System Restore And Wireless Doesn't Work...

Hi there, I am not seeing malware in any of those logs. I suggest you post in the software/networking forum.
If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.

Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Microsoft's last critical update seems to have caused a number of problems, one of which is that my System Restore now doesn't work. I know this does't help you immediate problem, but the lack of reliability of System Restore is one of the reasons I make frequent complete images of my system partition (which is just OS and pgms). I feel much more secure with complete images (not incrementals) and I have always turned off System Restore and used the images instead whenever I need to roll back.

New Acer Aspire, but I pitched the box, so can't return it. Anyway, It initially worked fine for about a week, including Windows Update. Got to a point where every window would say (Not Responding) and resources were maxed out. I couldn't isolate the problem and didn't have any valuable info on the laptop yet. So I did a complete System Restore back to OEM spec.
I tether to my cellphone for internet. So I installed drivers and Access Manager for that. I go into Windows Update and click to check for updates. It runs for about 20 seconds then disconnects from the internet and pops up an error code. I've gone through all the steps that can be run down there.
SP1 is not installed yet.

I tried downloading this driver: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...ional&lang=eng but every time that I try to install it it says "Driver not found! Reboot your system, and run this setup again." I rebooted my system but when I tried to run the setup again, I got the same error. Any help with this issue would be appreciated.

Answer:[SOLVED] Sound doesn't work after system restore

Why did you run the System Restore? Some malware pretends to be drivers in order to protect itself from detection & deletion.

If this is in the wrong forum, I apologize. My brother has a Toshiba Satellite. I had the model written down but I lost it. I can get it from him again if it is needed. I think it has one of the the AMD x4 CPUs with the graphics build into the CPU, if that helps.

It came with Windows 7. He cannot boot anymore. He said he sent it back to Toshiba when it was still under warranty, but they told him it was not a hardware issue. So the question is, what to do next? Since he cannot do a factory restore, I was thinking he should order a restore disc from Toshiba (I'm surprised they did not advise this to him in the first place)?

He has the Windows 7 sticker on the computer, but is it even possible to order a Windows 7 install disc without paying for the full version?

I suppose I could burn a linux CD for him; I"m pretty sure the hardware is working, because he said it tries to load Windows but it cannot finish.

Answer:What do you do if Windows 7 is corrupt and factory restore doesn't work?

Hello,

I'm doing everything as said, and the "previous versions" doesn't work. Why?
I also did manually a system restore, and it doesn't create a copy of files (for previous versions).
What can I do?

Thank you,
Patrick

Answer:Previous Versions doesn't work (System restore)

Try Shadow Explorer, The link says Vista but it works for Windows 7 as well. You may find your file that way.

Hi all - I'm new here, and I searched but couldn't find an answer to this, so I was hoping someone here could help! I just got my brand new SL500 yesterday, and right away wanted to swap out the stock hard drive for a faster, larger one, and use the old one as a backup. I ran the backup utility and made all these DVD's with supposedly the OS and the applications, put in the new drive, restored the system fully - and nothing. It sees the new drive and everything, but after the restore it won't boot from it, and it won't even boot from the recovery disk. It goes all the way to the network boot, can't connect to anything, and tells me to put in a boot device. I tried reformatting the drive and installing again - this time I backed up to an external USB drive and restored from there - same problem. I put the original drive back in, and now it's telling me that it can't start Windows up anymore, and that I need to repair Windows from my Windows disk - which of course Lenovo does not include with their computers. So what are my options here? I basically have a non-working computer, and since they don't include disks, and mine are apparently faulty (?), I can't do anything. I'm trying to install XP on the new drive now with the hopes that I can use the laptop that way for a while (Vista Basic isn't that great anyways), but really, is there any way to restore the computer again using my DVD's and the new drive? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks in advance fo... Read more

I don't know much about this, but it appears that it's either turned off - or that you haven't given it any space to store the restore points in.

Don't have a copy of Vista handy right now, but I think if you go to Start and type in "sysdm.cpl" (without the quotes) and then press Enter. That'll open a window with tabs across the top. Select the System Protection tab and see if you can start/allocate space from there.

System restore will not work on my laptop.
This has not worked since new toshiba fixed it over the phone for me when i bought it.
But i have now formated it and its not working again.

Any help on how to adjust the settings.

Answer:System restore doesn't work - How to adjust the settings

Hi

This is very easy?
First of all you have to check if the System Restore is not disabled on your notebook.
This can be checked in the control panel -> System -> System restore tab.

There you have to UNCHECK the option called ?Turn off system restore on all drives?.
Then you have to check if there is enough free space on both drives for the ?system restore? files.
In the settings you have to set the ?disk space to use? to max!

After new reboot you should start the system restore tool and should create a system restore point.

Good luck

I bought a windows 8 hp pavilion touchsmart and touch screen worked. I updated to Windows 10 and it worked, only after I did a factory restore did it not work. I've tried everything with the device driver and another factory restore and it still does not work. I sent my computer in to get it fixed while it was under warranty and it was still not fixed. I resigned to it not working and I think that hp should have solved this problem before selling its computers. So we are blaming it on Microsoft 10, but that is not the issue when it worked until I did a factory restore and attempted everything suggested. I have a 350 dollar piece of **bleep**. Plus now my Mic isn't working and there aren't any drivers for me to upgrade to, anywhere.

System had WIndows 8, upgraded to Win 10 and then wiped and reloaded with a fresh Win 10 install. To try and fix the "plugged in and not charging" issue, I installed the F.68 Rev A firmware dated July 26, 2016.  System won't boot to WIndows, says no OS installed.  When I switch to legacy mode I can boot (slowly) and run Windows.  I tried all the previous versions on the website but they all say they aren't compatible.  The ALT-B fix doesn't work to roll back the firmware.   I even did a full system restore of an Acronis True Image backup from pre- upgrade and it doesn't make a difference. System didn't have the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI so I installed the version from the website but it can't find a version to roll back to and none of the versions on support seem compatible. Can someone tell me where to get to correct firmware to load to fix this problem?

Hello. I know there are a lot of topics about that on the net, but i have read them all and none of the answers solves my problem. I spent 10 hours today trying to fix it any way possible.Despite always having Avast antivirus, I got the virus "Windows XP restore", which blocked all my files. I was able to download SpyBot, scanned my computer, removed viruses (turned out i had many). Was able to open my files again, but still system tools were missing. I removed spybot, installed malwarebytes which found many more junk and removed it. However still no system tools. I started system restore through cmd, but after i pick restore point and click next - nothing happens. I was able to restore my system tools in start menu. BUT STILL windows restore doesn't work. I read online that a lot of people have this problem. But solutions offered to them did not help me. I tried to restore in safe mode, turning off antivirus. I also reinstalled system restore tool (backing up few of my restore points and putting them back into system restore folder). But still I can not get past this NEXt button. it just doen't work. i do not get any error notifications. I am very frustrated with that and would love any advice. i feel liek some other things are missing from my start menu, that is why i want to go a week back. I really do not want to reinstall windows.

Hi!

This problem occurred a few years ago. I made a backup file to my external HD. Then I thought that I would make a different kind of a file (different content), so I deleted the first one and started to make the new one. Now the Backup didn't start! I click 'Back up now', nothing happens. From that on, any button or link (for example 'Turn on schedule') hasn't worked on that backup panel.

So, what to do? This isn't the end of the world. I can use other programmes, but I want my OS to work seamlessly.

First, I feel like I'm so close (after many hours of struggling) to getting my system back but just one more major problem...Windows Update doesn't work. I need some expert advice.

Second, sorry for the long, upcoming explanation but I think it is necessary to get meanful advice. Please be generous and read my story if you possibly can help.

How it started: I have a Dell XPS Studio MT 435 with a two HDD RAID0 system. It has three partitions: 1) C: System, 2) D: Recovery 3) Unnnamed. It shipped with Vista Home and I upgrade to Win 7 Home. HDD1 was causing errors...the RAID0 was dying. I was getting many BSODs.

I bought Acronis True Image Home 2012. I was NOT able to clone the entire disk as an image because of the BSODs. I was able to backup (sector by sector) the C: and D: partitions. I did not backup the unnamed partition.

I was also able to have Win 7 backup save off the C: partition.

I then replaced to the two hard drives (WD 640 GB) with two new hard drives (Seagate Momentus XT 750 GB) and reestablished the RAID0 with these new drives.

First I used the Win 7 recovery CD and its backup to restore the C: partition. The restore was successful but it wouldn't boot. There was no MBR. Windows didn't ask about nor put a MBR back on the system.

Next I used Acronis recovery CD and its backup to restore the C: partition. It did ask about a MBR, which I said to do. The restore was successful and when complete, it booted up to the Win 7 login. ... Read more

Answer:Windows Update doesn't work after C: partition restore.

1. Open Services.msc and stop the Windows Update service.
2. Open C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder and delete its contents (this will remove the cache and any history).
3. Reopen Services.msc and start the Windows Update service (the above folder structure will be recreated).
4. Now use Windows Update as normal.

Ok guys, I'm new here. Anyway, I need my computer for school. While I was looking up stuff for my English class, one of my programs (I can't remember which one, Java maybe or maybe the Automatic Windows Update one or w/e) said it had finished downloading files and needed to reboot. I did so. When it started back up again I noticed the Bar at the top that has like Music and you click on it and it pops up shortcuts to icons wasn't there. I looked up how to bring it back and none of the stuff worked. So I decided to do a system restore to a few days before and then I would just reinstall those updates. Problem solved right? I thought so too.

Now when I started up again I noticed that my McAfee Virus protection, IM protection and I believe Email protection was off. They were ON before the System Restore and OFF after. Well I tried to turn them ON. Both clicking them on Manually and clicking the FIX button. Everytime it says, Action could not be performed due to an error. I tried to run a scan but it couldn't. I thought, "Oh no a virus is in McAfee :O:O:O" :cry:cry I tried to access my internet but everytime it says "Loading..." on the tab and within .000001 of a second. It turns to (Invalid) or something. I don't have the infected computer close by so I can't post what it actually says. I checked the internet and tried to troubleshoot it but there are NO PROBELMS DETECTED. So now I know it must be a virus.

Have you run

Several other apps also either don't work or don't work like they did.

When I start SR I can only see one restore point, the one I made the day after I replaced my hard drive.
But now when I try to create a new restore point it allows me to enter the name, then after I click OK I get the message
"System Restore is not able to create a restore point. Please restart the computer , and then run System restore again."
After I restart I run System Restore again and get the same message.
Also, the restore points I made before I replaced my hard drive no longer show up.
When I replaced the drive (with a Maxtore 80 gb), I used their MaxBurn program to duplicate everything form the old one to the new one. It boots from the new C drive and runs OK and all my programs are there, but some act strangely. Hi everyone. A few days ago I downloaded something that caused pop-ups, redirects and double tabs to open in my Google Chrome (even though the setting was set to only open ONE tab).

Malwarebytes found 83 malware files (at once) on my system and I cleared it out which removed the pop-ups and redirects, but I found I System Restore isn't working and I can't access the wizard. When I try, it says: SYSTEM RESTORE IS NOT ABLE TO PROTECT YOUR COMPUTER. PLEASE RESTART YOUR COMPUTER, AND THEN RUN SYSTEM RESTORE AGAIN.

However, restarting it and trying again gives you the same results.

I then used the patch #278 sysrestoreenable.reg from Kelly's Corner and it 'installed' but still, System Restore doesn't work.

Another site said that this is evidence I might still have malware that neither Malwarebytes or Ad-aware have been able to detect. Can someone look at the logs and see if there is something I should be concerned about? I couldn't find anything, but I could really use some experienced eyes taking a look.

1: I backed everything up.
2: XP Firewall is and has been on.
3: I downloaded and ran DDS and made logs of programs running (attached).
4: I made a Hijackthis log too (also attached)
My apologies if I did this request incorrectly.
Thank you in advance for your time.

Hiya, all!

Auto Run and Auto Play just quit working. I did the basic, went to the drives concerned, the Auto Play is enabled, looks like.

The msconfig option is out of my expertize level. Would someone know what happened, and how I can get those options working again?

BTW, the System Restore quit working, too. I tried to roll back to a good working setting, but SR didn't restore. I tried several times, different dates. It only went back to July, anyway.

I'm not sure if those two problems are related.

My machine is Dell XPS, P4 3.4Ghz, 3 gigs of RAM, XP Pro SP3.

Just installed a new mobo and CPU. I get about 2 seconds into the "Starting Windows" phase before the system freezes and restarts. I only get the option to run Startup Repair, but it has failed to solve the issue about 5 times now. System Restore doesn't solve it either.
I should note that I discovered my disk drives have been labeled differently. I have no idea how this happened. I made sure the correct drive has boot priority in BIOS but it didnt seem to make a difference. I also do not have an optical drive or a recovery disk handy. Not sure what I can do at this point.

If you are using the same hard drive as previously used with old motherboard...without reinstalling Windows...that's probably the cause of your frustration, IMO.

My wife is running Xp home edition on a Dell Inspirion 1520. The computer is not recognizing the CD drive. Even when we go to "my computer" it is not shown as a "Device with removable storage" My first thought to fix this was to restore the computer to an earlier point but when I get to the calendar to set a manual restore point the arrow buttons at the top of the calendar don't allow me to select anything other than the current date. Anyone have any ideas about this?

Thanks,

Doesn't show it's face too often, maybe once every hour, sometimes more, and opens me a new tab in Firefox (I've read from other people that they've had pop-ups, but that could be because I won't allow Firefox to open more then one screen). The ads are from two companies: one called Calivary (selling ringtones I guess) and one called VergelijkenKoop.nl (Dutch for 'compare and buy'). I don't think they have much to do with the virus and it's just an affiliate program but maybe it helps. Found out about the infection because of the ads of course but I also failed to start ConnectifyMe which I use to create wireless internet in my home. Doesn't run all the time, only when I really want to use it. I also can't use System Restore and RootRepeal. RootRepeal gives me errors like crazy about a missing IODevice, the crash reports thinks I'm running Vista, while I'm running Windows 7.... Last thing I noticed was an e-mail from my girlfriend (who uses the same computer, different account) sent from her Windows Live account. The message said something about a shop called Reoorder.com.Software I tried to use but failed:Panda Internet Security 2010 (Anti-virus and vulnerabilities enabled but since this problems I've enabled Firewall and Identity... as well)MalwareBytesAdAwareHijackThisAnd some more I guess....The DDS log:[codebox]DDS (Ver_09-12-01.01) - N... Answer:Ads in Firefox, hacked Windows Live account, system restore doesn't work

Tried a system restore, didn't work... just got the ad again. ===========Hello While we understand your frustration at having to wait, please note that Bleeping Computer deals with several hundred requests for assistance such as yours on a daily basis. As a result, our backlog is quite large as are other comparable sites that help others with malware issues. Although our HJT Team members work on hundreds of requests each day, they are all volunteers who work logs when they can and are able to do so. No one is paid by Bleeping Computer for their assistance to our members.Further, our malware removal staff is comprised of team members with various levels of skill and expertise to deal with thousands of malware variants, some more complex than others. Although we try to take DDS/HJT logs in order (starting with the oldest), it is often the skill level of the particular helper and sometimes the operating system that dictates which logs get selected first. Some infections are more complicated than others and require a higher skill level to remove. Without that skill level attempted removal could result in disastrous results. In other instances, the helper may not be familiar with the operating system that you are using, since they use another. In either case, neither of us want someone to assist you who is not familiar with your issue and attempt to fix it.We ask that once you have posted your log and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your thread or make further repl... My Dell Inspiron Laptop which runs on Windows Vista will not start properly, the screen will go black after loading, this is before i can get to the log on stage. There is only a cursor which i can move.

I then started Startup Repair and it performed the checks, but my computer still wouldn't start. I then tried System Restore which didn't have a backup. I clicked the link to create a backup, but it said 'Your computer is running in a limited diagnostic state'. I have tried running the Windows Vista disk and it doesn't change anything. I have tried every method I know of, but I cannot get my computer working. Is there any other way, if you know please help me.

Answer:Dell Inspiron Laptop wont start and System Restore doesn't work

One last thing you can try is to press F8 while booting and on the next menu, select the 'Last Known Good' option

I have an Acer desktop with Vista 32bit Home Premium edition with Service Pack 1 loaded on it. My computer was working fine yesterday afternoon (at least it appeared to be), but when I tried to boot my computer up last night, I could not get my desktop to load. Windows seems to boot up, as I can get to the screen with the user names to login. No matter which user I select, however, the screen just goes black with only the cursor showing. I have tried booting from the last good boot point from the F8 menu, but the same problem persists. I have tried booting in safe mode, but the screen shows up all black once again, except for the four 'Safe Mode' texts in the four corners and the text Microsoft (R) Windows (R) (Build 6001: Service Pack 1) at the center top of the screen.

The Repair Your Computer option from the F8 menu at startup is about the only thing I have been able to get open on the computer thus far. Startup repair can't find anything wrong with the computer. When I try to do System Restore, I get the error 0x800700B7, so it can't rollback to my restore points. I ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool and it didn't seem to find any errors, although I couldn't view the whole report when it restarted because the screen, once again, went completely black except for the mouse cursor when it restarted.

I am at wits end and have no idea what to do to try to get my computer to start. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, as this is my computer... Read more

This is worthless. My good ole (quality) laptop gave up after eight hard years of everyday use and travelling. So i bought a Lenovo four months ago, without much knowledge about how OS:s have evolved after Windows XP. The computer itself worked decently for some months, although i'm not a fan of windows 8. downloaded classic shell to get it operative and it worked for a while, then came issues. computer freezed spontaneously, apparently due to "disk usage 100%". and after an update it completely went haywire, couldn't boot. 0xc0000001 or something.  The recovery partition didn't recover anything. I tried all the options, eventually even complete factory reset or whatever it was called. Didn't work. (i have diagnosed the hdd:s and they passed). 0xc0000001. Now is the first time i actually discovered what pre-installed Windows 8 meant in practice. I couldn't just go to the last resort, ie FORMAT C: and clean install OS. for apparent reasons, no DVD with windows. So i ordered this from lenovo. Got recovery disks, 5 of them came. After a lot of tinkering with BIOS i managed to get them to work, or atleast pretend to work. After the long recovery process said it was finished, i rebooted, altered boot order etc. And what do i see now? After a weird long boot up: Blue screen background, and the command prompt. It reads: X:\windows\system32>CALL X:\windows\system32\FIXLETR.CMD What do i have to do to get this working? The retailer is closed on weekend... Read more
