cant get to my computer in XP or any drive in DOS

Question: cant get to my computer in XP or any drive in DOS

I borrowed my boss's computer for the week to try and help fix it. its in pretty rough shape. The last thing i want to do is format it. I start it up and there are 5 profiles to choose from. (xp home) i get in. cant do much of anything. cant use the run command cant go to my computer cant access the c drive. so i go to dos via a startup disk. the prompt is a: i try to get to c: it says invalid drive spec. any ideas? btw d e arent recognizable drive names either.

like i said the last thing i want to do is fdisk it and erase the primary and start from scratch.

Preferred Solution: cant get to my computer in XP or any drive in DOS

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: cant get to my computer in XP or any drive in DOS

Chances are the drives are formatted NTFS instead of FAT32. DOS cannot see these drives and you can't access them through DOS (unless you buy NTFSDOS).

Your best bet in XP is to boot from the XP CD and enter the Recovery Console. That is the nearest XP and NTFS come to the old DOS.

You may want to do a repair installation of XP:

two weeks ago i was bought a Fujitsu B series lifebook computer.About 5 days ago I had got that virus stating I had a "processor running at 83 degrees", "hard drive clusters are partly damaged", "must scan to fix this issue", yatta yatta yatta and some other classic virus jive talk i cant remember at this moment. At first it kept bothering me about the scan, then it started popping up 57 windows in short succesion, then i couldnt access my other files, then my desk top went black and was reduced to 4 icons, start menu was obliterated.try combo fix, trend micro, some other reliable programs but i would either down load them and they'd disappear or in the case of combofix it would load then exit out quickly. It reached a point were i just couldn't boot my computer up anymore.NTLDR was missing it said. I am not sure if that virus deleted it or if the computer and its hd were just old and wore out. It was from the flea market.. I cant get past that error msg, there is no flash drive boot up option on this old thing, i have no floppy drive with it, it has no cd rom drive, ive heard the external usb cd rom drive cant be used to boot it up but im not 100 percent sure.Someone else with the same notebook reported that it would not allow usb cd rom drive boot up. I installed a second hard drive in place of the DVD drive and now when my computer is plugged in it won't charge (it says plugged in, not charging).  I can't imagine that the power adapter isn't able to handle a second hard drive because I've seen plenty of people that said they put two hard drives in their w530.  Is there some kind of driver or setting that I need to reset to make this work again?  I'm on windows 8.1 by the way so a lot of the solutions I've found by googling do not apply to my system.

do I need to go out and find an external dvd drive in order to access the pix/ use the discs? Or am I missing something on this ? If I need to purchase one, what is recommended for a modest budget?

Answer:I have a new surface computer and cannot find a dvd/cd drive to view/access stored pix, do I need an external dvd drive?

Yes you'll need an external USB cd/DVD drive to access disc. You can get one for a cheap as $20. They're all pretty much the same.

My computer no longer recognizes the cd drive/burner on my dektop PC, and I think the problem is related to a removeable USB flash drive.

It's a really old Compaq Presario with an added cd burner(drive d now), and the original cd rom(drive e). My PNY usb flash drive installed some software(drivers I think) when I 1st ran it, and shows up as drive f.

Worked fine a couple of times, but then the lights went out on the cd burner(drive d), it would not open, and it didn't even show up on "My Computer" either.

Searched on internet awhile, and read something about a flash drive problem, so I removed the flash drive from the USB slot, restarted the computer, and both cd drives re-appeared, and worked fine, as long as I removed the flash drive, and turned computer off after burning cd. But I forgot, and left it on for several hours, and now even when I remove the flash drive, and restart computer the 2 cd drives don't show up on "my computer". The cd rom(drive e) light comes on, and will open, but the burner(drive d) light is off, and will not open. Neither drive registers on "My Computer". The flash drive still reads as drive f, even with no drive d, or e.(lol)

Suggestions anyone?
Thanks in advance.

I am trying to access files on a hard drive from a different computer which will no longer load the OS. I have connected the hard drive using a usb adapter. When I plug it in, I get a notice that the device is ready to use, but it does not show up in Computer.

It is visible in the disk manager. There is no drive letter assigned and the options to do so are grayed out. Most of the options in device manager are grayed out, except for 'delete volume' and 'help'.

i can't get my puter to read the data on an external hard drive. wants me to format it even though it recognizes the drive letter i gave it when i did format it. don't want to lose the 100+ gigs of data i have on this drive.

Answer:my computer recognizes the drive letter but not the data on external hard drive

Does the external drive work on another machine?

Also, while the drive is still connected, can you go into Device Manager (right-click My Computer, click on 'Manage...', click on 'Device Manager') to check for any yellow exclamation marks or red crosses next to anything in there?

Hey guys, I've been having a very serious problem lately. I'm in the middle of working, and suddenly, my hard drive goes" click, clock....click clock, click clock. Then my mouse freezes and I have to flip the switch on my computer to turn it off. Then, when I reboot, it says "no drive found", so I wait like 3 minutes, then boot again, and all is fine about another hour. Then the same thing happens..... click clock...freeze.

Now, there are a few factors to consider. My computer did this one time in 2004 (when I left it on for 3 days straight of Maya rendering) and hasn't done it again til about a month ago. Recent things that I have done since it happened was:

1.) Increase my page file size to 3.5GB (and add the "/3GB" line to my boot.ini) (also note, my page file is on my Slave hard drive on it's own 5GB partition at the beginning of the drive. It's split up a bit (cuz of the MFT). Prior, I had my page file set to 1.5GB (and it wasn't split at all) on it's own partition on my slave. No problems.

2.) I arranged my physical arrangment in my case of drives, my Master was on top and Slave just below it. Mind you, I have 11 fans in my case, two on the rear, two on the side, two in front (blowing direct over the HDDs) one on top, two on the PSU, one on both the CPU and GPU, so my PC is well cooled. It's also very much OUT IN THE OPEN under my large desk, so nothing is blocking airflow (except maybe the desk about 5... Read more

I had a problem with my windows. When ever I plug in my Flash drive (i got a few: kingston data traveller 1gig, pendrive 128mb,etc) onto my usb port. Window will be able to detect the drive had been plug in. I can see the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon on the right side of my task bar. But i cannot see the drive appearing in "My Computer". If I double click on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon and try to view the external drive information, I can see that its already detected and being assign with drive E: . Even if I open a windows explorer and type in E:\ , it will throw me an error "Cannot find 'file:///E:/'. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct". But if I were to restart my computer, then i can see it for the first time. If I disconnect it (thru the "Safely Remove Hardware") and plug it back in (or plug another flash drive), I cant see the external drive. Causing I had to restart my computer multiple time a day . Can anyone help me on this?

I would be tempted to reload the motherboard chipset drivers. They control the USB I/O and if they are just the default WIndows ones, they may not be 100% OK with the specific motherboard hardware.

Dell Dimension 8400 (about 3-4 years old). Stock SATA 160gb hard drive crashed (got the blue screen, all the codes, etc.) Took it to a computer place, they also said the HD crashed. I have bought a replacement 250gb SATA HD - attached the two inputs to the back (one thin and ling, one thin and short) and all I get on boot up is a couple of chirps and the screen says "Drive 1 (and 2 and 3) Not Found: Serial ATA, SATA-1" and repeats for drives two and three. The drive is warm, it's being accessed (it's humming), but I've also tried a third 160gb drive, same thing. I even replaced the original drive back in and the same thing - not even the blue screen and error codes any more.

Went to F2 set up, set to auto detect, all (SATA) drives sets to 'on.'

I'm computer literate, but not a techy or anything.

Totally lost now. Please help.

I had an 80GB Seagate IDE hard drive in my Dell Dimension 2400 that was clearly dying. I have been using a boot CD to connect to the Internet for days now. I have replaced the old hard drive with an unused 250GB WD IDE drive and with difficulty gotten the computer to recognize it. I intended to boot to flash drive and use the boot CD to execute the transfer of an image of the old Seagate drive from its location on my external hard drive to the new internal hard drive. But the computer will only boot to flash drive when the new internal hard drive is removed. When the drive is in and I click Enter on "6. When I take the hard drive out, I can boot into flash drive again. I have A05 BIOS, and it appears to me from the Dell website that is as far as I can go.

How can I start booting into flash drive with my new hard drive in place, just as I did with my old hard drive in place?

I recently had a computer custom built at a repair store. A couple of weeks back my start menu stopped working because of a Windows 10 update. I decided to wipe everything and reinstall Windows. I have done this many times in the past on other computers with no problem. This time it was quite a headache. I have 2 hard drives. I first removed the data from both drives, then assumed Windows should be installed on the smaller drive. After installing there I realized I had no access to the larger drive anymore. So I started over and installed instead on the larger drive. After doing this I finally admitted that I had no idea what I was doing. I brought it back to the repair store and asked them to make it the way it was when I bought it. They did so with no questions asked, but I'm worried about it happening again. The main issue is I have no idea how the two drives are configured. If I need to reinstall Windows again, how can I set this up correctly?

These are the two drives I have:

Boot Drive: Samsung 850 EVO 120GB SSD
Storage Drive: Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD

Thank you!

Answer:Custom Built Computer Boot Drive vs Storage Drive

Is disk 2 an external 2TB hard drive ?

Going by your pic you seem to have Disk 0 of about 50GB that isn't being used and Disk 1 of 1TB which has everything on it !

If Disk 2 is an external drive disconnect it and see if the PC still boot into Windows ok.

I am using win XP. I bought a generic flash drive and it worked well for two days. Now, my computer shows it as a removable drive, but when I try to access it, it asks me to insert a disc into it!!

Also, when I click properties - it shows there is no capacity on the flash drive. I am a beginner with computers, I would appreciate some help in layman terms. Thank you.

Answer:My Computer thinks my flash drive is a floppy drive! Help!

Did your Flash come with any software? Xp is obviously confused as to exactly what the drive is .
It may be that the drive is full. Try formatting it .Right click on the drive in My Computer.
If there is a Web page for the Drive see if they have drivers for it .Download the file.

Often you can plug the drive in and go to Device Manager . there you can uninstall the drive by right clicking on it and uninstall. Then reboot with the drive left in.Xp will try to install drivers when you get back to Desktop.Cancel that and use the Hardware Wizard to search for the drivers .Here you choose the device from the lists that are offered to you. That of course is if your drive is listed.

My wife has bought a new Dell XPS 8300 as her HP is four years old. The new machine has Windows 7 Professional already installed.
Is it possible to remove the original primary disk from her old machine and install as a second drive on the new one? Will we have to remove Windows 7 Professional on the old drive before installing in the new computer as a second drive? Will the new machine recognize her programs and data files on the second drive?

Thanks

Answer:Installing old primary drive in new computer as secondary drive

Yes, you can install the old drive in the new PC.

No, you will not have to remove Windows 7 from the old drive.

The new PC will recognize the data on the old hard drive, but not the programs. You will have to reinstall the programs onto the new hard drive in the new PC.

pls suggest trouble shooting steps to remove drive from cd drive and create icon under my computer for cd/dvd drive

Answer:Uanble to eject cd from cd drive and also cd drive missing in my computer

First off, reboot. That should allow you to remove the CD.

If the drive is still missing, try this.

Download CDgone, right click on the downloaded file and choose Extract All, then double-click on cdgone.reg Say "Yes" to the merge question and then reboot. See if the drives have returned. You may have to re-install CD burning applications, since they're the ones that tinker with the filter setting in the registry that caused the drives to disappear.

Hello, Ive just put a second hard-drive in my pc for storage. It works fine apart from it keeps dissapearing from My Computer & I have to reboot to get it to appear in the drive list.
Also Ive tried to find it in disc management & disc management wont load & just gives me this error 'Unable to connect to logical disc manager service' and 'the dependancy service or group faled to start'

Also compmanagement keeps freezing up when I ask to look at removeable storage.

Ive looked in the event log & about an hour ago I had this log ' An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\D during a paging operation.'

Do you think the hard drive may be faulty?

I have just bought an AIO Asus desktop with 1 Tb of storage. The c: (Windows)drive is allocated 100gb and the d: drive 931gb. I just want to transfer all the data from my old computer. This was pretty much all in the folder c:>Users>Myname, but when I try to transfer it all into the same folder on the new computer, obviously with 100gb there is not enough space. Is there a simple solution to this?

Thanks and sorry I am not very technically gifted.

Answer:New computer, c: drive too small, d: drive wrong place?

It is highly advisable to keep as is and copy your personal data to drive D: so you can separate Windows OS and Data on two separate partitions.
Easier to backup/restore/refresh/reset Windows in case of Virus attack, Windows becomes unbootable etc... so you don't have to worry about data being loss.100GB is plenty for Windows and would run faster (less fragmented)less time to backup/restore Windows. You can also relocate what you save in C:\user\yourname to D:

The computer I'm having a problem on is a HP G6- 635 DX Windows 7 x64. About a week ago I decided to disable a few startup items because my computer took too long to load up. I think I disabled something that I shouldnt have because the next time I restarted I had gotten stuck on the "Starting Windows" screen.

After I couldnt fix that problem I decided to just use the System Recovery option, so I popped out my hard drive and put it into an HDD enclosure and backed up my music/video files onto my other computer (Windows Vista Home Premium). When I plugged my hard drive back into the laptop I got the "bootmgr is missing" screen.

I've tried all the command prompt steps to try and fix the bootmgr, they arent working but I think thats because my computer is automatically booting from the C: drive (which has no files in it and is about 200mb in size), and my D: drive is 285 gb and has all of the folders that used to be in the C: drive (Program Files, Users, Windows etc). Theres also another drive titled "Recovery" with the size of 13 gb.

Also whenever I try to do System Recovery it gets stuck at 88%.

I have Easeus Partition Manager bootable by CD & an HDD enclosure, thats how I am able to see the files.

So basically what I;m asking is, is there a way that I can get my computer to boot from the D: drive OR what files should I move from the D: to C: drive that will make my computer boot and finish the System Recovery?

I thought I had finally gotten this resolved by running Adware SE, Ewido, and Spybot Search and Destroy. However when Windows installed updates and restarted my computer it was back to the same thing. The computer keeps telling me I am running out of space on the Zip drive and prompts me to compress files to save space. But of course there is nothing in the disk drive to begin with. A disk icon for the Zip drive appears in the task bar that thinks it's the disk drive.

For a few shining moments I thought I had finally solved the problem because the disk icon disappeared and my web pages loaded as the should with a cable connection. Now my computer is running very slow again.

Does anyone know how I can permanently fix this? And what is telling the computer to use the zip drive???????????

I am attaching my hijack this file that I just ran in case it helps.

Try uninstalling the InCDsrv.exe that comes with Nero and reboot and check affects.

This computer Vaio running Vista suddenly failed to recognize the DVD drive. When you push the button the light lights but door will not open. Also, under computer the drive is not listed.

When you plug in the external hard drive, the computer sees the drive, loads the driver and in the device manager shows it is working properly but has a exclamation mark next to the name. However, when you look in computer the drive is not listed.

The C drive along with a USB stick work fine.

The computer has been cleaned using AVG and Superspyware. Also, various other aspects have been checked using Advanced System Care. The C drive is 90% full.

I would appreciate any help in this matter.

I guess no one has a clue.

It also will not recognized an external DVD player/writer. BTW, all of these were easily seen on another computer and worked fine.

I have a LaCie Porsche Design P9223 Slim External 500GB USB3Hard Drive that my father was using on his computer (with no problem). We're both running Windows 7. My computer, a Dell Studio XPS9000, won't recognize it in "My Computer". There's no drive letter!

It shows up in Device Manager ( says, "this device is working properly")
Show up in USB Safely Remove
Shows up in Devices and Printers
Shows up in Disk Management as Unknown/Unitialized, Disk 10. (When I right click and try to initialize it, it says "Device is not ready".)
The Driver is up to date
It works when I attach it to my husband's laptop, running Windows XP.

What can I do to assign it a drive letter???

Hi there,
I'm using Windows XP on a Dell Dimension 4700. Internet Explorer freezes up after 5-10 minutes of use - CTRL-ALT-DEL usually doesn't work - have to reboot. Recently, am unable to open c-drive, Control Panel or My Computer by double clicking. An error box comes up that says: Trial has Expired. You have exceeded your trial period. This evaluation version will no longer function. Please click on the "order button" to purchase your licensed version or the "Quit" button to exit.

Then it gives two options to click: ORDER and QUIT

When I click on Order to see what this is about, it takes me to a Paint Shop Pro page to order. I have an "ORIGINAL" version of Paint Shop Pro that I bought, so I don't know what this trial version is about.

I ran Norton 360 and it didn't catch any viruses. I ran Avast free version and it found some viruses which were fixed. I was unable to run either of these virus protection programs in safe mode so just ran them in normal mode.

I ran Malwarebyes in Safe Mode and it found various problems (Trojan Dropper, Trojan BHO, some Adware issues, etc.).

I'm still having problems. Please help. I'm a rookie user.

Thank you so much.

Ok so my computer is spazzing... it just keeps restarting and restarting without ever getting to the welcome screen or anything, it's so quick. I've tried all I can try with that and I'm just so over it so it was suggested to me to just start all over. However there are files on that hard drive I need!

So....... I got this thing called an external hard drive enclosure and it houses the hard drive while I attach it to my husbands computer (which has the same operating system)... HOWEVER dun dun dun... when I click on all the files it's ok... BUT! The one folder I need to access, My Documents, gets an error. "Access denied" and says it has 0 files in it. What's up??? How do I get my files!!

Operating system: Windows XP
Coming from an HP DV1000 going into a similar laptop, got the IDE enclosure with 2.0 usb connection........

Answer:How to get my files off the hard drive of a dead computer and on to another computer?

Did you have a password on your login? That would give you an access denied message.

Yet more proof of why you always make a dedicated "data" file for any of your data needs

I've run into an odd problem, that I've been experiencing the past two weeks. At random my computer will freeze up, the monitor will turn off and the computer beeps. The motherboard fires back an error code: 75 Detect HDD IDE device detection. My Windows boots on an SSD drive, what is happening is the boot order is being rearranged, rearranging it back everything works.

Why is the computer while using it, switching to an IDE drive at random ?

Answer:Computer Switches to IDE Drive at Random - Shuts Down Computer

Maybe the ide drive is failing in a circuit board, the bio detects that and shuts it off, or windows shuts it down.

Test another drive or take it out and see what it does.

I have a Dell Computer with windows XP . I use a number of flash drives, the one in question is a PNY 8 GB, It has worked well until nowI would say it's about a little less than half full. I tried to open it to check on how much space was left and not only would it not open but my computer froze up. I tried a few times to open it, but gave up because I was afraid to harm the computer. Does this mean that it's broken and that I've lost everything on it ??

Answer:Flash drive won't open in my computer, also computer freezes up

Does it work with other computers?

So I have recently bought a Samsung 850 Evo 120 GB ssd drive. My HP computer now has a 1TB hitachi hard drive and a ssd drive. The computer loads from the SSD drive. To try and maintain space, I have tried to download MS Office on the HDD. But when I install office, while in the middle of installing, my computer always crashes. This has happened on all three of my attempts to install office so far. Is there any reason why I should not be able to install office on the HDD or do I have to install it on the SSD?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Answer:Computer crashes while installing MS Office on a Computer with 2 drive

It's always best to have your programs loaded onto the Windows drive, which in your case is the Samsung SSD.

It would be best if you could supply a screen shot of Disc Management making sure it covers all discs & the information. This will show if you have any other problems.

This tutorial shows how to do a screen shot.

Hi. I'm having malware issues which have turned into hardware issues. Fortunately, my USB ports still work so I'm trying to recover as much as I can before I may have to erase my hard drive.

I'm ignorant on flash drives vs zip drives. I'm also on a budget.

What I want to do it get as many of my documents and pics, email etc. saved to an external place (zip/flash drive). My "C" and "D" drives are about ten gigs combined. (yes old system).

What are my options? I'd also like to use it for back up once I hopefully get my situation resolved. Thanks for any all help/advice! -fisher_girl (catch and release).

Answer:Flash drive vs zip drive help for computer recovery, please

10 GB of data is not that much. You can just buy a flash drive with 16GB and save all your personal files on it. -
Here are a few models: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=flash+drive&N=-1&isNodeId=1 , which you can order online.
Alternatively, you can just go to your local supermarket, and buy one. They are not that expensive.

A ZIP drive is not a choice here, as it's capacity is very limited.
Wikipedia said:

The Zip drive is a medium-capacity removable disk storage system that was introduced by Iomega in late 1994. Originally, Zip disks launched with capacities of 100 MB, but later versions increased this to first 250 MB and then 750 MB.

OS: Windows XP Home SP1
DVD+-RW Drive: Mad Dog Megastor 7-in-1 External USB 2.0 8X DVD±RW DL

This is what I'm trying to do: I did a Windows backup to my C drive. I'm trying to copy it onto a DVD. I did the same thing a month ago with no problems and now it won't work.

Drivers are installed properly. I uninstalled and reinstalled them. Computer says device is working properly. In My Computer, it recognizes the Megastor as a DVD-RW Drive until I put an empty DVD in. Then it sees it as a CD Drive. I did change the drive properties to enable CD recording. When I put in a CD or DVD disc with data on it, computer sees it as the correct kind of drive.

I tried using NeroExpress 6 to burn a data disc and got an error message that "There is not enough space to burn this compilation onto this disc" even though it's an empty 4.7 GB disc and I am burning only 2 GB.

I also tried, in Windows, to just copy a file from the C drive to the F drive (which is the dvd+-rw), and I get an error message "F:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function."

Another thing: if I turn on the DVD drive before turning on the computer, it gets hung up and doesn’t finish booting up. I turn it off, and the computer continues to boot up. Is that normal?

Don't know if anybody can help me with this, but thought I'd try. Thanks.

My old compaq computer has missing files that won't allow windows to run. It cannot boot up without the use of a special disk and only then it will only boot up in DOS. I have a new e-machines Computer and I would like to transfer the data from my old hard drive on to my new one. How would I go about doing this?

Answer:How do I attach my old drive to the Hard Drive in my new Computer?

First, on the new computer, update all virus scanners.

Then, verify jumper settings for old and new hard drives. Personally, I would set the new HDD to master (or single) on the primary IDE channel, and the old HDD to master (or single) on the secondary IDE channel. All other drives are not attached for simplcity's sake.

Boot the PC and go into BIOS to check to see if the BIOS picked up the new drive. You may need to set it to auto-detect, though it probably already is. Continue to Windows. When in Windows, double-click My Computer to see if the drive is there. If it is, you are in good shape. Run a full virus scan on the old drive. Then, make a folder on the new drive, and drag over the files that you want to copy. This is assuming you haven't locked / encrypted and folders.

It takes a lot of time, but this is the method that I use. Some people say to Ghost things (or use another utility) but I prefer to do it the old fashioned way. Less chance of error, and you can catch what's happening more quickly, I think.

Cheers.

Hi.
I am replacing a dual core computer (motherboard die) with a new pc. My question is: I would like to connect the main hard drive from the old PC as a slave or secondary drive to the new PC. So beside physical connection, what else I need to do?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Answer:Old hard drive to new computer as slave drive

You left out some important information.

Is the new PC a factory-brand one or a self-built one?

Is the hard drive in the new PC an IDE or SATA model, and does it contain a Windows operating system?

Help! On my old (Windows 2000 pro) machine, the computer (under "My Computer) only recognizes my external USB DVD-R drive (Pioneer DVR-S706) as a CD-Rom Drive! It plays CDs fine, but when I put a DVD in, I only get a "incorrect function" message. The "my computer" doesn't change to a movie title or anything; it just says "CD-ROM."

The weird thing is, it USED to work just fine. I could play movies, burn discs, etc. The only thing I can think of is that something might have happened when I uninstalled Ulead Movie Studio about a month ago (the DVD burning program that came bundled with the drive). I downloaded the latest firmware updates from the pioneer site, but that hasn't really seemed to make much of a difference.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

thanks!

Hi,

Anyone know if it's possible to use my Old Hard Drive as a Master drive
on my brand new computer?

Here's what happened:

My 2 year old emachine AMD Athon 2600 computer's motherboard died just
recently. So I just bought a emachine AMD Sempron 3100 computer very
soon after. I managed to get practically all of my files from my old computer
over to my new computer by setting the old hard drive up as a slave, and
plopping them over - but there's still some stuff (not in the form of files)
that I still want.

What I'm trying to do:

I'm just trying to retreive my Old Microsoft Outlook emails that I did
not backup before my 2 year old computer's motherboard died. I just
want to boot up my old hard drive, on my new computer, get into MS
Outlook, export my emails to some file, and get out.

What happens when I setup my old hard drive up as the master
on my new computer:

I get a "Disk boot failure, Insert System Disk and Press Enter" error
message.

Anyone know how I can get by this error message?

Thanks in advance,

Joe

Note: The very first time that I setup my old hard drive as a master on my
new computer, I had the opportunity to "enter safe mode" or "boot up
normally," but I turned my computer off. I can no longer get to this point.

I'm still using my Windows XP Pro computer but it doesn't have a lot of space left on the hard drive. When I bought this computer it only had 6GB of space. I only have 1GB of space left on the hard drive. My old computer has 18GB left on the hard drive. I edit videos a lot and I also want to play some PC games. Could I just take out the old hard drive and hook it up in my Windows XP computer? Do you think that I should just buy an external hard drive?

Hey, sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, but im new here.  I looked through the Faqs, but my question seems to specific.I'm building a new computer from scratch.  Currently on my old computer (the one im on), i have 2 hard drives.  One of them (80gbs) contains xp, and the other (250gbs) contains all my movies, music, documents, and much more.  I recently bought another 250gb hard drive, but it is still in the box.  I was wondering if i installed xp on the hard drive thats still in the box, and i move the hard drive that does not contain xp on my old computer(250gbs) to my new computer, will the hard drive(old 250gbs) have everything ereased? My new computer will contain: -MSI P6N SLI Platinum LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard-EVGA 320-P2-N811-AR GeForce 8800GTS 320MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Video Card-Rosewill RP550V2-S-SL 550W SLI Ready-ATX 12V V2.01 Power Supply-Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz LGA 775 Processor-CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 675 (PC2 5400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWIN2X2048-5400c4-dvd burner, dvd rom, and floppy, cooler master case

Answer:Hard Drive help (moving from computer to computer)

also, i was advised that when i first installed the old 250gb, i formatted it, as you do with all hard drives when u install (with a cd).  now there is no reason to format it again(and erease everything) because a hard drive that is formatted is just a plug and play thing.  Remember, im not installing xp to this hard drive, so their is no reason anythign should be ereased. xp is going to the new hard drive that will be formatted.

Not too long ago I upgraded the harddrive on my laptop and got some real helpful advice. I have another question about my laptop as well as my desktop.

One thing that I have not been able to do with my laptop since upgrading the hard drive is password protect the computer. Before the upgrade, you had to log in to use the computer - now all anyone has to do is turn it on and everything is accessible. I have tried everything I could find under user accounts. I have created an administrator account. When I log out of it, I have to log back in with a password, but when the computer is first turned on, there is no password that is required. Anyone can turn it on and get into anything. What can I do to remedy this?

Secondly, we just got DSL on our desktop computer. When we had dial up, you had to put in a password before it would "dial up" and get me on line. Now, the DSL internet is on as long as the computer is on. We are trying to have safe internet with children in the home, and have not even gotten wireless for the home desktop, but are sticking with an ethernet cable and have the computer in a very open area. But I would like the kids to be able to use the computer anytime but not be able to get on the internet unless we put the password in so that their internet usage is supervised. What can I do to password protect the internet?

I have lost access to the DVD drive. It does not appear on the "Computer" drive screen.
It will start up with a disk inserted but shuts down after a approx 20 seconds without having opened any files.
The DVD light comes on when it first starts up and then goes off within a few seconds.
I have re-installed the Toshiba driver and still no access.

I believe it started when I installed a new WD 1Tb external drive which setup its virtual CD drive on the E: drive which was used by the DVD drive. I have moved the external drive to G: and left the E: drive letter vacant but still not working.

Any ideas how I can solve this? It would be greatly appreciated.

I thought I had finally gotten this resolved by running adware SE, ewido, and Spybot. However when Windows installed updates and restarted my computer it was back to the same thing. The computer keeps telling me I am running out of space on the Zip drive and prompts me to compress files to save space. But of course there is nothing in the disk drive to begin with. An icon appears in the task bar that thinks it's the disk drive.

For a few shining moments I thought I had finally solved the problem because the disk icon disappeared and my web pages loaded as the should with a cable connection. Now my computer is running very slow again.

Does anyone know how I can permanently fix this? And what is telling the computer to use the zip drive???????????

I am attaching my hijack this file that I just ran in case it helps.

you'd be better posting this in the Xp-W2k forum or the hardware forum as you will get a better response to your question!

I'm having problems burning DVD's at first I thought it was software problems, come to find out my computer wasn't reading my DVD nor CD drive nor my external DVD burner drives..I received an error while attempting to burn DVD's, it said it was a "Code 39" so I looked it up on the Microsoft web page and it told me to uninstall my drives in the device manager (there was an exclamation mark next to my three drives) and then reinstall them, I did and the computer reinstalled them and the exclamation marks were still there..

So then I tried the second option and it told me to delete my upper filter and lower filter (I think that's what it was called) and I did and that worked, BUT!! the computer is reading my external DVD burner as a CD Drive ( J: ) instead of DVD..Now because of that, I'm not able to burn my DVD's because the decrypter is stating that it doesn't recognize and drivers to perform the operation..So, if anybody could give me help I'd greatly appreciate...

BTW, I have windows XP Home Edition if that makes any difference..

Thank You, Adrian

I've acquired a Dell Inspiron 580, to replace my Dell Opiplex 780.

I have a 1tb C:/ drive with many programs installed in the Optiplex. Can I simply put that drive in the new Inspiron and boot it successfully?

What if I put the C:/ drive in the Inspiron, put the Windows7/64 install disk in the Inspiron DVD drive, do the first boot from the install DVD, and say "repair the operating system" on that drive? Would that work?

Thanks. I dread having to reinstall many programs, some of which may not be able to get, as they are university licensed and may not be available or I may not be able to re-install again (Microsoft and other companies limit installs in the university's license).

Thank you.
Jim

Answer:Can I put C:/ drive from old computer into new computer and boot?

No, that won't work for a variety of reasons - drivers, activation, etc.

Run the Belarc Advisor on your old system. That will give you the license keys of all programs.

Hey. I'm sure this was answered elsewhere, but I didn't see any posts on moving a secondary drive over to be another computer's secondary.

I have an old Pentium 3 with two hard drives on it (a 18GB and a 120GB) on Windows 2000.

Now I just bought a computer that is running Windows XP and I intend to move the 120GB hard drive over to be the secondary drive.

The 120GB was the secondary/slave drive, so I'm wondering: do I still need to follow all the steps including formating it to be current with the new OS or can I just plug it in and it works automatically?

In a less wordy way: does it have system files on it that need to be deleted or will it work perfectly from the start?

I used Seagate's DiscWizard to install the slave drive on my old computer, which was easy enough, but that was a empty hard drive.

Win XP will just auto detect it and away you go. You won't need to install anything. It will perform better if you formatted it NTFS previously but if it's still FAT32 it will still work fine. Start using it.

I just installed a brand new Western Digital Hard Drive 160 gig. I partitioned it with FDISK, then formated, then did a clean install of windows XP. Everything was fine until after i finished the installation, and i tried to connect my old maxtor 20 gig so i could transfer some files over, and the computer stopped reading both hard drives. When i start it up, the computer can't boot from either drive. I've tried disconnecting each of the drives and only booting with one connected, with no luck. I also tried changing the gray strip, I can't remember what its official name is, but that didnt help either. When I go into BIOS and let it auto detect my drives, It wont recognize either of the drives.

Answer:Scanning dirty hard drive from clean hard drive in same computer

Hello, and Welcome

Detach the drive without the FBI virus. On another computer download Kaspersky Rescue Disk. Burn the iso to a CD. On a Windows 7 computer simply right click the iso and select Burn Disk Image. Hey guys,

I have a HP Touchsmart IQ500. Turning my computer PC on today, all I got was a blue HP invent screen with setup, boot menu, system recovery, and system diagnosis, and I could not get past it.

I entered the BIOS and figured out that the hard drive was listed as "not installed." Pretty sure that is the main problem.

I tried a system restore (with the Windows 7 install disc), but I guess the computer couldn't read the hard drive enough to enter safe mode (I tried restarting and F8ing several times).

I put in an external hard drive, and the BIOS read it; however, windows does not allow you to partition an OS on a hard drive.

I am all out of ideas; I'm currently taking apart the computer (touchsmarts are hard to pry open), but I have no clue about computers so I'm hoping one of you guys can help.

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Computer Not Booting Hard Drive/Unresponsive Hard Drive

It should be under warranty...probably too late but taking it apart will most likely void the warranty.....sounds like a dead hard drive/loose cable

I have been having an issue with my HP laptop where the DVD drive will recognize there is a DVD or a CD in my drive (the CD icon will show up next to the drive in My Computer) but when I click on the drive it will say "Please insert disc." I can get the DVDs to play through Quickplay but I cannot seem to get burned DVDs or game CDs to work.

Here recently I have been trying to mount an ISO file and it does the same exact thing. The laptop acts like there is no CD (or in this case the ISO) in the virtual drive and asks me to insert a disc.

What could be causing this?? Kinda getting annoyed with it!

Hi, the computer I'm currently using is probably 5 years old so of course does not support SATA devices.

The setup is as follows:

MASTER 40GB IDE Seagate (99% full)
SLAVE 120GB IDE Seagate (99% full) or IDE DVD-Writer

My plan is to copy the contents of both 40GB and 120GB to a new SATA 320GB so that my setup will be like this:

MASTER 120GB IDE Seagate (30GB partition for Windows files)
SLAVE 40GB IDE Seagate or IDE DVD-Writer

Then I'll buy a new computer in the future... I just need space right now, but can't be bothered burning DVDs. My backing up of files onto SATA will be one-time use only.

Question 1: From what I understand, I'll need an IDE-to-SATA adaptor or PCI card to be able to use my SATA hard drive on my non-SATA motherboard?

Adaptor: You plug one end of the plug into an IDE slot on the motherboard and the other end to the SATA hard drive? Easy as that?

PCI Card: Works similar to above, just put it into PCI slot?

Question 2: I'm going to get a new AMD dual core CPU + decent ASUS motherboard. How feasible is it to use my 120GB (30GB Windows partition) IDE Seagate HDD as the master boot drive, and the 320GB SATA Seagate HDD as the "slave"?

Thanks.

This is a month old Dell 8400. I've done a fresh install of Windows XP Home, and I"m not sure if this problem started fresh out of the box or when I got the new install done.

Anyway. When I put any blank media in the DVD/Cd (E drive (Sony DRU 540A) the DRive changes its status in "My Computer" to CD Drive (E (Not even CD-RW Drive like the other one listed drive (D ).

In properties the disk reads as full also. Cannot copy anything to the blank disk.
WHen the blank media is ejected from the computer. The drive status changes back to DVD/CD drive.

I can watch DVDs on the drive and run disks that have programs on them. I cannot write to the disks though. I have been able to write to the disks after formating with INCD by Nero. Thats it. I shouldn't have to format these disks though. Oh and when I had DVDX Copy installed I could backup DVD's. That is not installed right now though.

Troubleshooting I've already tried:
I have tried 2 different DVD drives. Same results.
I've uninstalled all DVD related software in case there was a conflict.
I have uninstalled the IDE Secondary and the DEvices themselves in the Device manager then let the system reinstall them.
I've tried changing the jumpers on the drives from CSEL to Master / Slave (DEll ships the drives factory CSEL).
Tried updating drivers, and looked for other firmware.

I"m outta juice.LOL!! Don't really have any more Ideas. I'm just a novice.

At this time there is nothing wrong with my drive or OS(7) but my machine seems to be short on power for running my CAD/CAM programming. Screen will lock up and churn fora bit, then take off and run. I have 4g memory, but it says it only recognizes 3.5g. Fellow machinist running same program said I need a better graphics card and more CPU power, so the search is on. I do not wish to start over from scratch with my programs and would simply love to just put my drive into a new computer, either buy a barebones or store the takeout drive.
I tried this once before with another 7 machine I have and it would not boot and run, return original drive and it was happy again.
Can this be done without investing in some expensive, time consuming data transfer program?

Answer:Using old drive in new computer

Make Windows 7 bootable after motherboard swap

Moving an OS drive to a new computer isn't child's play, so it's not surprising you had problems in previous attempts.

You could try Paragon Adaptive Restore from the above link.

I see that you are using 32 bit Windows 7.

If you decide to go to 64 bit Windows and want to use more than 3.5 GB of RAM, I don't think you have any choice but to do a completely clean new install.

I put my drive in a new computer which didnt work

That's because the drivers installed are for the old PC not the new one.
Try this for a start
Type Services into the start menu search box.
In Services, scroll down to "Remote Procedure Call" and make sure the status says "Started"
and set to Automatic.
The second "RPC Locator" should be set to "Manual".

Dual boot. XP Pro (SP3) on Drive 0 as primary, extended D: both of which are FAT32. Then I made a partition on the drive 0 and assigned it drive letter F: and named it Windows 8.1PRO. Bought a DVD of Windows 8.1 pro and installed it in that partition. It created a new folder in my C: drive (XP_C) called BOOT. In it resides the BCD and other necessary files. Dual boots into either XP or Windows 8.1 I also have 2 other physical had drives, both 1Tb like the drive 0 and drive 1 is E: and drive 2 is G:

Wife has identical desktop I built and is configured same way.

Recently I tried to edit the BCD file with a program called BCD Edit. I created a restore point and when in the program I backed up the BCD file before proceeding. After I edited the BCD from Earlier Windows operating system, to just "Windows XP" I tried it out and the menu is as I edited, but not in the 8.1 blue graphical style I thought would happen, but more the command prompt, black screen with white lettering. I booted back into 8.1 pro and all was well. I went back into the program and restored the original BCD file then uninstalled BCD Edit program. I found out around this time that even though I can access drives G: E: and even drive D: which is the extended logical of drive 0, I could not look at drive F:, which I had previous changed the lettering to some time back that held the XP partition.

Hi there,

my DVD-drive suddenly disappeared from 'MY COMPUTER'.
The hardware-manager tells me with a yellow question mark that there is a driver problem (driver damaged or not available = Code 39)

When I uninstall the drive and search for new hardware, the questionmark comes along with it right away. I know that optical drives on winxp don't need extra drivers, can I sill somehow force XP to install / download a new (same) driver?

It is a HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GWA-4164B in a Dell-Desktop PC.

How do I get my DVD-Drive back?? (checked cables and plugs, looks good, has power and open/closes fine).

So I think I'm a pretty advanced computer user. At least comparatively. But this has me completely baffled. On my Acer Aspire 3620 laptop, my hardware is all pretty stock. The only things I've changed would be a RAM upgrade I did, and I had the computer center on campus (Univ. of Akron) clean out dust from the inside and reapply some thermal compound. But one day, I turned on my computer and happened to notice in My Computer that is says I have 2 CD drives?Look:http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/6836/wtfg.pngThis is just one drive: the stock CD-RW/DVD-RW drive. Oh, and when I pop a disc in, it shows up in D:\. E:\ seems to be nothing.Any ideas?

Answer:I have 1 CD drive; My Computer says I have 2?

Have you installed any software that emulates a virtual Cd/DVD drive?

In this virtual drive you can load a cd image like ISO file and the computer treats it as if you have an extra cd/dvd drive. Look in your add/remove programs list, what softwares you have installed. Softwares like Nero, CDBurner XP, PowerISO, UltraISO, MagicISO, VirtualDrive, DeamonTools, Alchohol 120% etc are known to install these virtual drives.

Hi All Happy Christmas!!!!

I brought the OH a new computer for Christmas, but I brought it without Windows or a hardrive. As she always has a good SSD in her old system.

I therefore thought I could just swap the SSD to the new computer and everything would work. But I was wrong.

The new computer (Sata III) can see the new hardrive in BIOS and its boot priority. But windows boots as far as the Windows logo and then I get the repair or restart option.

Any ideas how I solve this?

Thank You

Answer:SSD drive in new computer

You cannot move an existing windows install to a new mb or swap mb without going through a detailed procedure [outlined at the top of the forum]

Best fix is to clean install windows however if you want to pull out the drive and reinstall it in the old system then follow the procedure, it should boot. Again a clean install of windows is a better way to go.

If this old computer is a dell, hp, or other big box system, you cannot move a windows install.

A friend gave me a computer the other day. It came with a DVD-RW drive. Not sure of the drive specs. It was working when I first set it up. I tested a DVD on it and instaled some software with it but when I went to instal some more software, nothing came up. I checked through windows explorer and it said there was nothing in the D drive. I tried a few different discs, music, DVD, software etc and still nothing. I just noticed today that when I opened windows explorer it now can't even see a D drive. I opened device manager and scanned for hardware changes. It came up with the DVD-RW drive with an exclamation over the icon, I clicked on it's properties and it said it couldn't read the driver or something, I can't remember, should have written it down. Anyway, it said to click troubleshoot so I did. It said I should reboot first and click troubleshoot again if there was still a problem so I did that. After reboot it poped up a window that said there was a problem seeing the D drive and it may have something to do with the AnyDVD software that was instaled, and I should uninstall it, reboot, install it again and reboot again, I don't have the disc for AnyDVD, it came with the computer but I uninstaled it anyway and rebooted. Then when I opened device manager it again couldn't see a DVD-RW drive even after scanning for hardware changes. The drive still opens and closes normaly. I haven't opened the computer since I got it and it was working fine... Read more

well, try going to device manager, right clicking on that drive and uninstall the drivers. reboot, and let them load. see if that helps? if it doesn't, it might be better if you uninstall the drivers, shutdown the computer (unplug the power cord), unplug the dvd drive, then boot back up. then shutdown again, reinstall your dvd drive, boot back up, and let if find the new hardware, and go from there. - sos

I have an emachine T2085 that is loaded with programs customized to run a labview test sequence. It also has additional board added to accomodate the test equipment. I pulled the Cdrive and put it in another computer and all the data and operating system are in tact so the hard drive is OK.

Does anyone know if I can purchase a newer emachine and replace the hard drive with my old hard drive then update the newer system drivers. Will my hardrive from the older machine boot in the new one? I am running windowsXP. I really appreciate the help as I know enough to be slightly dangerous and this is a very important tool we use for qualifications testing.

Answer:Can I put old C-drive in new computer

If its important then i am guessing that you will be dedicated to this now almost every computer has a backup hard drive which is mainly for computer fixing companies you can transfer all you files on to that backup and then transfer them on the new hard drive this away your not worried about if the old hard drive will work or not and you have got all the stuff on your old computer all they have to do is be running the same operating system so like say they are both running Windows Vista Home Premium then they will both have the same type of files it might work if you were transferring xp files to vista anyways think about it

Hi, I wondered if anyone had any suggestions.
My daughter purchased this HP All-in-One machine from Best Buy on 6/22/10. She has used the cd/dvd drive since she purchased it with no problems.
Last night, she tried to use it, and the drive won't "grab" the cd and pull it in.

She's tried everything she knows...used Windows restore to restore to a previous date and time, tried another cd, even uninstalled the cd/dvd drive and re-installed...all with no luck.

Anybody have any other suggestions?

It should still be under warranty, no? Did she try gently pushing the drawer to initiate the process? (I'm sure she did, just asking in case...).
If it's not under warranty and the gentle push doesn't get it going, I would just replace it. They're not expensive so not worth fixing. It unusual to see one fail so soon, but not unheard of.

I think I have heard talks about this before, but im not sure. I googled it for about 30 minutes with nothing solid. Im using WinXP Pro.

Ok basicly I want to be able to use my USB Pen Drive as a log on device. Once windows boots up it searches for crednetials on my pen drive and logs me in. If the credentials are not present, then it brings up the usual Windows XP Logon.

Can this be done?

Answer:Using Pen Drive to log onto Computer

hm.. this is an interesting question.

Usually usb pens with encryption key's, RSA fobs, certificates, biometrics, etc are used in two factor authentication systems.

This means that in two factor authentication,

a) you need to have something (usb pen, a thumbprint, a key with certificates, a predetermined number...)

b) you need to know something (usually a password).

Usually, the easiest way to setup this for a personal system is to use biometrics. The rest (AFAIK) use a CA type system which is a little too much for 1 system.
