Device Manager Shows wrong info

Question: Device Manager Shows wrong info

Hello all,

I have just finished building my first system form the ground up. My problem is not what I expected, as I was waiting for a major catastrophy...LOL

On post, and in the device manager, the info about my processor is wrong.

Here is what I have:

ECS KT600-A Mobo
Athlon 2400XP
512 Kingston DDR 333
ATI 9000 Pro
WinXP Pro

On post, and in the device manager, it shows that my CPU is only an 1800+ and 1.5 gig. This was bought in a retail box from a respected dealer here, and I understand this to be a 2 gig CPU.

Is there something I have to do in the bios to recognise the full spec of the CPU?

I have been at this all night, and I am now off to bed. I will look for responses in when I get up.

Thanks in advance

Preferred Solution: Device Manager Shows wrong info

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have bought the Satellite L550-11K to myself and because stan it has a p8700 processor with 2.53 GHz. However, in the device manager it stands 2 times a T4200 processor with 2 GHz!!!?

Answer:Satellite L550-11K - Device manager shows wrong CPU

I had the same issue that the CPU in my desktop computer wasn?t listed properly so I have removed the CPU from device manager (right click > uninstall) and restart the notebook. You have to remove both entries.
After restarting the CPU will be recognized again and this time it should be listed properly. For me it worked. :)

Another question, are you running the preinstalled OS or have you installed another OS?

I've just bought p200D-11L with turion 64 x2 TL-60 2,0ghz with Vista and the problem is that the hardware manager is showing x2 athlon TK-55 not Turion.

Why is that?
Have I been cheated or something?

Answer:Satellite P200D-11L: Vista device manager shows a wrong CPU?

What CPU is shown in the system properties?

I have checked the specifications in the internet and it seems that the P200D-11L unit was equipped with AMD Turion 64 X2 mobile technology2 TL-60 CPU!

In my opinion it?s a simply wrong entry in the device manager.
Solution is:
Remove the CPU from device manager and restart the notebook again.
Then the CPU should be recognized again correctly? please check this!

bruceb3 ... WinDirStat will show what you are looking for.  Download here, from

BleepingComputer Review:
WinDirStat scans one or more hard drives and produces a detailed map or the disk making space hogs immediately apparent.
It does this by drawing a rectangle for each file, the relative sizes being decided by the relative sizes of the files. So, a very big file will be a very big box and a small file would be a small box.

Hello. I'm a newbie here. I posted a different problem earlier today, and noticed a new one when I ran the TSG System Info utility. It shows I have PC Cleaner Pro as my antivirus program.

Here is what it says: Antivirus: PC Cleaner Pro, Updated: Yes, On-Demand Scanner: Disabled

I use AVG, not PC Cleaner Pro. It is an on-demand scanner and I thought it was enabled.

I searched my hard drive for PC Cleaner Pro and it doesn't show up. It isn't listed in my programs, either, so I cannot uninstall it. Is there any way I can get rid of it? Why isn't my AVG information showing, instead?

Thinkpad Yoga 20CD-0032USWindows 8.1 as pre-installed In the Check Up tab of Lenovo Solution Center it has an alert saying one or more devices has problems and then it lists an Unknown Device with Status Not installed.  However when you launch Device Manager it doesn't show any unknown devices.

Answer:Lenovo Solution Center Shows Unknown Device But Device Manager Doesn't

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I?m sorry to inform that it is a false indication from Lenovo solution center. Since Windows doesn?t detect any missing device drivers within the device manager, there is no driver that is missing.
If the warning keeps popping up, change the reminder settings to ?never?. Probably, you have to wait for an LSC update in which the bug would be fixed.
Refer here for further information regarding the issue.
Hope it helped!

My laptop system info shows a different version than what i actually have. Its messing with drivers. Most importantly the display driver where the screen is possible of 1080 resolution but i am only able to go up to 1366x768p. I don't know what to do at this point. Could a system reinstallation "fix" this?

I swear I'm never messing with linux again. It's a great operating system when it works, but when it doesn't, it will screw everything up.

OK, so I removed the linux partition from inside windows. But it was still trying to boot into ubuntu, because of grub. Well, I used this recovery cd to try to fix this, but it was a factory recovery cd for an dell laptop (N5050).

Well, the computer is actually a dell inspiron all in one 2305.

I'm currently using windows and it's working correctly, just displaying wrong model (probably wrong drivers as well).

Anyways, linux is still installed and the computer thinks it's a dell laptop.

I forgot to mention one thing, the optical drive doesn't read cd's. But I can boot from a usb.

So, what can I do to fix the situation, and I solemnly swear to never use ubuntu again!

Answer:System info shows wrong model, how to remove grub?

Just an update, I was able to remove ubuntu and combined the partition with windows, and restore the mbr using easyBCD (Highly recommend it)

How can I make sure that windows recognizes my computer as a dell inspiron one 2305?

My integrated speakers and audio port do not seem to be working. It happened after I was playing around with bluetooth trying to get that to work. Now only bluetooth is able to connect.
So far I have tried:
System restore
Deleting and redownloading audio drivers
Adding legacy hardware for Realtek
ePSA test was able to hear the tones
The audio logo has a red X through it and only the bluetooth headphones drivers appear in device manager. Any ideas what might be the issue and how to solve them?

I am using the above said model, there is not much of a problem, but recently I have notice in the Device Manager under other devices are two Sub System Devices listed with yellow markings stating the drivers are not installed and the error code 28. The location is stated as PCI Bus 8 device 6 functions 3. I mean not that I have problems or there something wrong with my laptop, but it?s quite irritating and I want to solve this! Can anybody assist how to fix this problem? PS: In Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers if I choose my pc icon and try to troubleshoot I get install a driver for this device and I get a suggestion of "apply this fix" whereby clicking this I get a message that it?s not fixed because the SBD has no driver.

When i search any CD in my new WinXP installation, it is adding the user profile path to the actual path of the file being searched on the CD.

Eg: Actual file location is G:\Stuff\test.txt

Search shows wrong the path as below:

C:\Documents and Settings\Siva\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows\CD Burning\Stuff\test.txt

Also, the file becomes inaccessible from the search results page.

I wonder that this could be a virus. But when i searched using antivirus, no virus is found.

Kindly help me in resolving this error.

Hi guys

I've got a computer facing this problem now. Googled around, tried the Plug and Play enabling in services.msc, but no joy. Another thing is that nothing shows up in my Network Connections too. But the computer is connected to the net.

Any help pls? =( thanks

Answer:Nothing shows up in Device Manager

I did some Googling myself... check out this link. There are registry edits involved, so be careful. Be sure to create a restore point FIRST and make a back up of the registry too. Use this guide to create a system restore point and/or to create a back up of the registry.

Good luck!!!

(the first link should also fix your issue with nothing showing up in Network Connections )

Windows 7
This seems to be a chicken and an egg situation.
I bought a new SATA HD and cloned my old C HD to it making the new HD the C drive. The old HD is unallocated (no drive letter).
The Device Manager sees it and says it's working properly? Acronis also sees it...
"A blank disk drive has been found. do you want to prepare the disk for data and if necessary, copy your files to it. - 'Yes' or 'No'?"
If I click 'Yes' and pick the drive in question it gives me two choices:
(1) - Initialize disk in MBR layout (disk will use Master Boot Record (MBR) layout.
(2) - Initialize disk in GPT layout (disk will use GUID Partition Table(GPT) layout.
The first time I chose the (GPT) layout, because the master C disk is MBR. But when my Computer didn't see it, I did it again, this time I chose (MBR). But the PC still doesn't see it?

Answer:New HD only shows in 'Device Manager'?

SOLVED (surfed the net)
"In Windows 7 go to:
Start-->Control Panel-->System and Security-->Administrative Tools-->Computer Management-->Disk Management
Your external drive should be shown there.
Right-click on it and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths...".
Select "Change..." and give it a drive letter from the list."
I'd click on a tick, but there aren't any ticks to click!?

I own a Satellite A100-1AI and have moved from Vista to Wndows XP?

My DVD drive has been discovered as a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20N but is only showing as a CD drive in the My Computer screen.

Also Device Manager is showing Mass Storage Controller and SM Bus Controller as an unknown (other) device.

Since moving from Vista to XP I have not adjusted my BIOS settings

How do I clear these unknown devices and make my DVD drive see CD's

Many Thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite A100-1AI shows CD drive but Device Manager shows DVD drive

Just one question;
Can you read and burn CDs?

Regarding the unknown devices:
These devices are supported only by Vista and therefore there are no drivers for Mass Storage Controller.

Check this:

+After installing Windows XP there could be a yellow exclamation mark by a "PCI Memory Controller" or *Mass Storage Controller* in the device manager.+

+This device is likely the Turbo Memory former Robson module.+
+This hardware will only supported by Windows Vista.+
+Therefore there is no Windows XP driver.+

Any ideas how to get this working again....we REALLY need our scanner back.

Hi There,

I've had two issues in the past couple of months which you folks have helped me solve. I'm hoping that this one is easier.
I've just bought a "new" used computer that's the same as the one I had problems with. It didn't come with a hard drive or OS, but it had a valid Windows XP Pro COA.
I installed the OS, my printers, drivers, updated Windows Service Packs, etc. on a hard drive. Everything's good EXCEPT: I tried to burn a CD, with the CD-RW. It was unsuccessful.

Going through Device Manager, it's reading the CD-RW as just a DVD ROM. Thinking the CD-RW was defective, I swapped the CD-RWs from the two computers. The "new" one worked fine in the other computer, and the other CD-RW showed as a DVD-ROM on the "new" computer.

Does anyone know what's going on and how I can fix it? It's still under warranty by the seller, so I can return it within the next couple of days, if it's a serious problem, but I really like this computer-it's got a faster processor than my older one.

Thanks for any help I can get!

Hi guys, I was wondering if anybody can help me with an issue that I have with one of my computers. My old motherboard went bad, I replaced it with a similar model ( I had a MS-6547 v1.1, now I have a MS6547 v2.1 or MAX. I notived that in my device manager, all my PCI devices show 8 times and with an exclamation point. I formatted the harddrive, installed windows xp, sp3. same issue, usually my NIC card does not need the drivers from the floppy, in other words, the Cnet pro 200 actually works after I format my HD. Now even if I try to install the drivers, it will not recognize them. Same thing happends with my video card and a USB 2.0 card. I formatted my drive again and installed XP ( no SP). Same issue, please help, thanks.

HI! I have this PC Sony PCV-RS510, Pentium 4 2.8 GHz, 512 MB DDR RAM, Integrated Video and Audio. I was checking out IRQs in the Device Manager and I noticed that the Processor is listed twice. I opened the Properties for each one of them and the iformation is exactly the same except for the Device Instance Id in the Details tab. The first Processor Device Instance Id is

And the second Processor Device Instance Id listed is

Also, when I looked in " Advanced System Information" in Control Panel, the same information shows as follow:

Processor: X86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9 Genuine Intel 2793 MHz

Why is the CPU showing up twice? It's not a Dual Core, so I don't understand the reason for that. I have almost the same kind of PC (Pentium 4 2.80 GHz...) and it is listed only once.

Hi guys,

I just tried to install Ubuntu from a USB stick alongside Windows 10, and have managed to make my external HDD disappear

Halfway through my installation of Ubuntu I noticed that the software was trying to install from a 500GB drive (my external HDD) instead of the 8GB pen drive I was trying to install from. I quit the installation hoping I hadn't done any damage, but apparently I have...

My external HDD still shows up as a named device in device manager, but it's not in My Computer. Looking at Disk Management you can see it as 'Disk 2' (see image), but all the options to Format etc are grayed out.

Is there any way to get it working again? Ideally keeping the data that was on there, but if not then just reformatting.

I would first disconnect it. Restart the computer. Then reconnect it.

I've had this 2TB Ext hdd 1021 for about a year and it's worked perfectly up until today. I don't want to reformat or anything like that, as I have nearly the entire 2TB worth of memory filled with films and TV shows. It won't read when it's hooked up to any of the ports, it doesn't show up in disc management, but it does show up in device manager. But now that I have it showing up there - now what? The drive still won't open nor (obviously) play any of my films/shows on it. I want to - at the very least - extract the data from it and move it elsewhere.

Answer:2TB Ext HDD 1021 shows in device manager, won't play

Probably the cheapest way to figure out if it was the enclosure or the drive that crapped out on you is to buy one of those drive dock devices that looks like a mini-toaster. Then pull apart the enclosure, extract the drive, and stick it in the dock. If the drive works, you're in business. If it doesn't, short of sending it to a recovery service (which would probably cost a couple grand) the data's as good as gone.

Hi all

I've just rebuilt windows XP on my Satellite Pro M50 and all seems to be well, except that before I re-installed XP my device manager showed all my 1,025 Meg of memory.

It now only shows 768 Meg. System Information however shows all the 1,025 Meg. Any suggestions?

Thanks In Advance,

Answer:Satellite Pro M50: device manager shows only 768 MB memory

I assume the memory was not upgraded. As far as I can remember the notebook Pro M50 was delivered with 256MB + 512MB modules.
Therefore I don?t see any problems with the memory. It should show 768MB.

Hoe did you check memory value in the system information???

I just purchased a custom built system for my son. I bought the monitor separately. It?s an Asus ROG PG348Q. All drivers are up to date.

In Device Manager, under audio it shows the monitor correctly (built-in speakers I guess) but under monitor it shows Generic PnP.

I tried to Update Driver and it ?searched? the internet only to state that the generic Microsoft driver was the best one. I?m wondering if the monitor is performing below it?s potential by not running with its vendor-specific driver.

It seems to perform great as is. Just wondering why it?s not recognized for video as it is for audio.

Thanks for reading/commenting.

I have searched and searched....gone to gateway (the PC is a 5200s - Windows XP home) and downloaded driver after driver....and still no luck. The Divice Manager still shows the 'ethernet contoller' as an "other device". Alittle history: This is after a 'system restore' that i wiped all the old hard drive info. Everything works, no viruses, nothing slow, nothing wierd....just the device manager saying my ethernet controller does not have any drivers installed. Like I said, i run the Network setup wizard, make my computer the one that directly connects to the internet, and run ethernet to a router that in turn runs a PS3 and a laptop. So it works, but it says it doesnt. Any advice?

Answer:Ethernet works but still shows up in the device manager

You say you have installed driver after driver. By any chance have you uninstalled the ethernet adapter and then reinstalled it? Then installed drivers?

Just a thought.

(Please tell me if I'm in the wrong area of this board)

But a friend living hundreds of miles away uses XP and ran an "unasked for" Pop-Up utility that said he had computer problems because of malware or spyware some unnamed entity had installed on his computer. Unfortunately he doesn't remember the name of the "so called spyware detector/remover", but he fell for the "Warning" and ran the program to "check" his system.

Of course, as most those unrequested detect/remover programs found many "so called serious" problems. But would Not "fix/clean them" unless he payed for the program.

From THAT point on, his CD-ROM wouldn't work(which it had dependably always before)....the Device Manager that it "is there" and what make/model it is....and also says that it is enabled and working properly(but it isn't working, as before). And the Icon disappeared from from the My Computer folder. I guess that program somehow did something to it, in order to force people to pay for the program to "fix it" and othe so-called problems!

Has anybody ever heard of this?
Can you help me get his CD-ROM accessable and working dependably as before? Please??

I just built a new computer and I had my first problem. I'm relatively advanced with computers but this one is over my head.
Here it is:
I have one optical drive. It's a Pioneer DVR-112DBK. It's IDE and set to Master. All other drives are HDD (and they are all SATA). The main issue i'm having is that i can't boot into linux live cd. I've tried 2 versions of Slax and 2 versions of Knoppix. These CDs work perfectly in my other computers. They load up to a point and then give me a 'limited kernel'. Back|Track 2 was kind enough to tell me that it may be because i have unsupported hardware such as SCSI or PCMCIA-CDrom). That led me to look in my Device Manager. There i saw that windows sees the drive as SCSI. Another odd thing is that the virtual drive i created in Alcohol 120% is also listed as SCSI. The cable i used to plug it in to my mobo was definitely IDE. My Bios sees it as IDE in the 'boot device priority' menu. I tried disabling the 'SCSI/RAID host controller' in my device manager and it disabled the dvd drive. i suppose the windows install disk supports scsi because that worked no problem. I think that this issue is also keeping me from being able to complete a burn of a Dual-layer DVD. I've looked all over the net for answers and can't find any. please help me. Any advice is welcome.
I think i've put everything in here but if you need anymore information from me, just ask.
THANK YOU in advan... Read more

I installed Windows 10 as an upgrade the other night and am enjoying it so far. Everything seems fine except one problem - my optical drive isn't working! I don't use it that often so only noticed when i needed to burn a cd for a friend.

In Device Manager it is listed under "Other devices" with a question mark on the icon. Have deleted it and done a scan for hardware changes, and also tried "update driver" - no joy. Screenshots below. Any ideas? I notice several other people have been having this problem

I've just bought P200-1K9 and spotted that Device Manager (32-bit Vista) shows two different CPUs under the Processors section:

Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T7300 @ 2.00GHz
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T7700 @ 2.40GHz

I expected to see both excatly the same CPUs here.

Vista in general recognizes CPU as core 2 duo 2.4GHz, BIOS too.
So what's about this Device Manager?

Is there something wrong with the CPU? Should I better return it?
Would you please check your CPUs in the Device Manager (Start -> right click on Computer -> select properties -> Device Manager) and let me know what you've got?

I'm gonna boot some linux live CD and check it from there as well.

Answer:Device Manager shows two different CPUs on Satellite P200-1K9

Hi mate,

the problem you?ve got is not an problem. It?s just an simple bug in the Vista device manager and hardware abstraction layer.
Do the following:
Remove the CPU from the device manager (just deinstall it like any other device) and reboot windows. The processor will be shown correctly next time you start the system again.

I've spent most of the night searching and cannot seem to find an answer to my problem so I registered with the hopes that someone here may be able to help.

I have a NAS set up with two 2TB Samsung Spinpoint hard drives. The hard drives in the NAS were partitioned to have 300GB in a RAID 1 and the remainder in a RAID 0. One seemed to be failing so I removed it hoping I could connect it externally to my laptop and recover the data. When I hooked it up to the laptop, it seemed to connect fine but did not show in My Computer. When I went to Computer Management - Disk Management, it shows the partitions as healthy (see image - Disk 1). However, when I right click on the partitions to assign a drive letter, the only options available are Delete Volume and Help. Same when right clicking the Disk 1, all that is available is Convert to Dynamic Disk, Properties, and Help.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Good afternoon guys my name is Tamara. I'm a Mac girl so forgive me if this is a dumb question. I just purchased a 24" all in one desktop from Dell with Windows 10 for video/picture editing. Anyways, when I connected my WD My Book (that has worked flawlessly on my MacBook, and it has a bunch of videos and pictures stored) it doesn't open automatically and when I looked under File Explorer its not listed on the left side either. However when I opened Device Manager it was listed under "Disk Drives" and "WD Drive Management devices." Do you guys have any ideas how to resolve this? Thanks in advance.

Answer:WD My Book 2TB Shows Up In Device Manager But Doesn't Open

Hi Tamara and welcome to Tenforums.
I think this has to do with formatting incompatibilities. The common format that both Windows and MAC can read is FAT32.
Probably should look at trying out the free version of HFS for Windows, to allow it to read and write to a drive formatted for a MAC with HFS File System.

Hope that helps.

I have quite some experience with win98 'ghost driver' issues and have been sucessful in repairing them. In my new-to-me laptop with winxp, I have multiple monitors listed in device manager as 'default monitors' along with extra batteries and an extra fan within system devices within device manager. I know these extra items slow my 'puter, but for the life of me, I am unable to use the procedures with success, that have been previously so successful in win98. I have an ATI radeon 5450 card. After i installed Windows 7, the display device in device manager has been showing as Standard VGA Graphics Adapter.

The hardware IDs show up as:

When i google these, it shows as ATI 5450, but why doesnt my device manager show me the same?
Even my ATI catalyst Control Center does not launch after installation, and the driver details in my device manager remain unchanged too.

All the videos and media appear extremely pixellated even on LOW res.

I have not made any changes in BIOS.

ALL i tried was uninstalling the standard vga from device manager, rebooted and let it reinstall, but that didnt change a thing.

It shows up in the device manager and states it is working correctly.
However it does not show up in Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers.
I attempted to initialize what i'm assuming is my HDD however 2 problems.
Firstly, It only shows the disk as 3GB.
Secondly I can't do it as it pops up with an I/O Error.
So, as you can imagine i can't write anything, thus making my gaming computer rely on a 100gb SSD for now..

Weirdly, it does not even show up on my BIOS. I have changed around the SATA ports around to see whether it is the MOBO and even the cables.

Does anyone have a fix or is my HDD probably faulty?

I have uploaded the Xp professional -64bit OS on my laptop.
But after that in the Device Manager it show ? on
Display Adapters - Sstandard VGA Graphics Adapter
Other Devices - Audio Device on High Defination Audio Bus
- Base System Device ( 4 Nos)
- Modem Devices on High Defination Audio Bus
- SM Bus Controller
- Video Controller

Where can I find the dirvers for these

Answer:Re: Satellite A300-243 with XP 64bit shows ? on the device manager

You need Win XP 64bit drivers. That?s fact.

- Video Controller is a graphic card and the graphic card driver is needed.
I think the GPU is Mobile Intel GMA 45 chip. Check driver from Intel page

- Modem Devices on High Defination Audio Bus ? it?s a modem driver

- Audio Device on High Defination Audio Bus ? this is sound driver.
It?s a Realtek sound chip and you could try to use the driver from the Realtek page.

But this is VERY important: You have to install firstly the MS patches KB835221 & KB888111 before you would install the sound driver!!!!
The patches are a part of SP3 too. Therefore it would be advisable to install and to update the Win XP before installing sound driver!!!

So I have a dual-monitor setup hooked up to my port replicator for my Dell E7240. I have my main monitor hooked up with a DVI cable and my second monitor hooked up with a DisplayPort (from the port replicator) to HDMI (on the monitor) cable. This setup has worked fine over the past year, and I didn't have an issue with it on Windows 10 up until today. Now, I only see an image on the monitor in the BIOS and the Windows 10 startup screen (duplicated on both screens), but once I get to the login screen, the monitor does not detect a signal. I've reconnected the cable, attached/detached the laptop, and updated to the latest Intel HD 4400 drivers from Intel's site. The other interesting thing is that although there is no picture, it detects both monitors in the Device Manager. I'm pretty confused why this stopped working as I haven't changed anything. Any ideas?

EDIT: Fixed it by searching a little deeper (kinda tricky when everyone words it differently :/ ) and hitting the Windows key + P and clicking "Extend" brought it back!

On a fresh clean Windows 8 image, my software driver (signed) installs fine and shows up properly in the Device Manager. However once i uninstall it , subsequent reinstalls show up as 'Unknown Device' in the Device Manager.

From the device details, I find that it refers to /looks for the .inf file in c:\windows\inf folder but the file itself is missing from the location. The FileRepository has all the required files. But trying to update from there also fails.

i posted the following problem on the Dell forum, but no one has provided the solution, and its been 2 weeks. here is the problem:

All of a sudden, the icon for my wireless connection was missing from the bottom right corner of my inspiron 700m, running xp home, sp2 (avg virus updated). so, i went to device manager, looked under Network Adapters, and the only things i now see are 1)1394 Net Adapter #2 and 2) Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller. There is no longer the info for my wireless connection, like there used to be. i went to dell's website to download all the drivers that were available for wireless, and nothing worked. Pressing FN F2 to enable the wireless card did not work either.

I went into the BIOS to make sure the MiniPCI card slot is enabled. i didnt really understand what i saw and whether it meant it was enabled so here is what i found there:

i did not see anything that specifically said "MiniPCI card slot" in the BIOS. But, in the PhoenixBIOS Setup Utility, under the Advanced Tab, i saw:

Wireless Control: [<Fn+F2>]
Wireless: [ On ]

Both of the above were grey. i wasnt able to go down to it or highlight it, as opposed to

USB Emulation: [Enabled]

under the same tab, which was black, and i was able to go down to it and highlight it.

i never set up any password to lock BIOS, so i dont really know why that section was greyed. so, does that mean the minipci card slot was not enabled in the BIOS or was i looking at the wrong thin... Read more

Every once in a while, I open my device manager and run down the list of each device, asking it to check for newer drivers. It invariably tells me everything is up-to-date.

A few days ago, I was chasing down a bug in a video capture utility, and in the course of fixing it, I discovered my audio driver was old -- out-of-date by a full year! Yet my device manager never figured out there was a new driver, even though I manually told it to check at least 10 times since the new driver's release date.

Why? What can I do to fix this?

Answer:Device Manager Steering Me Wrong

It only checks the windows database on the device. Typically windows will only recognize the driver as being out of date if it's actually a pre win 7 driver.

Now that you are up to date, I wouldn't really worry about it, the only driver that typically needs updating on a regular basis is graphics, and even then only on gaming or performance machines, and these drivers should always be downloaded from nvidia or ati/amd directly.

I've tried everything possible to get this problem solved and I'm out of solutions. New Sony laptop has Authentec Inc AES1660 biometric finger print reader. The Oem sony drivers and the latest install fine and the device shows up fine and working under device manager but windows 7 x64 under control panel biometric shows the device as "Unavailable" neither the protector suite or Authentec software work b/c windows does not recognize the device being there. I have looked all over the net and I'm not the only one with this problem. Others who made similar posts on Authentec website have not received any response.

Hoping someone here has a solution?

Answer:Biometic Authentec Unavailable but shows up fine in Device manager

I have no experience with any finger print readers. But here are my thoughts:
The device is recognized and working in Device Manager and that means the system and OS are ready to use it.
I'm thinking the device does not show up in Control Panel because it now must somehow be 'connected' or 'started'. You know how you connect a camera or USB stick for the first time, and drivers are loaded for the device, then "your device is ready to use", but when you unplug the device it disappears from the system. It's ready to go, but just disconnected.

I would check the manual to see if there is a way to activate (connect or start) the device. It could be an Fn key (similar to the volume keys, etc) to toggle the device on and off on the keyboard. Or software that is supposed to be installed to create some sort of Control Panel. There might even be a switch on the laptop.

It seems logical that there would be a way to activate/deactivate the device on as as-needed basis.

My first post
I'm the computer-geek for our small school in Bangkok. We have 15 computers, and they all have pirated OS. My plan is to get a genuine version of Windows2000 for all the machines. In reformatting 2 of the computers already, and installing, they both come up with device manager problems for the
1. ethernet adapter
2. audio adapter
3. video adapter

I ran Everest, and it says i have a VIA P4M800 chipset, VIA VT6102 Rhine II fast ethernet adapter, VIA AC'97 enhanced audio controller, and a VIA S3/Unichrome video adapter.

The last few days i have been on other computers that could connect to the internet to download the drivers for these devices, and installed them on this problem computer - nothing changed. I have uninstalled devices, drivers, had the "Add hardware wizard" refind them etc., but nothing changes. This problem is the same on both of the 2 computers i reformatted and installed Windows 2000 pro on.

Any suggestions on what to do?

I've had this problem with my Windows 7 64bit OS ever since it updated a while back (I'm not sure what updates).

The wireless adapter that was already installed stopped working, then two successive new wireless adapters (both usb) failed to work as well. The computer just refuses to detect them (although it beeps to indicate it knows a device has been plugged in)

A lot of the methods I searched for to fix this issue told me to look in Device Manager, which is empty... which then sent me on another search to figure out how to fix that.

None of the methods I've found have worked (Editing permissions etc).

I'm tempted to just re-install Windows, but I thought I'd ask here first.

I'm not sure what information is required to help me, so if you ask I'll try my best to supply.

I don?t know why this happened but in your case I would remove both graphic cards from device manager and restart the notebook.
Then you only have one graphic card.

By the way, what driver did you install? You should only use the display driver from the Toshiba page because the drivers directly from ATI are only for desktop cards and not tested on the Toshiba notebooks.

Ethernet Controller
Network Controller
Multimedia audio controller.

I havetried to install drivers with NO sucess.
Tried loads still o joy,

Am I missing something.
Can any one help

Answer:Tecra M2: XP device manager shows 4 yellow exclamation marks

I will try to identify the devices without plug & play id but I don't garantee nothing.
If something is wrong please post the PnP-Ids (device manager -> properties of the devices -> details -> hardware ids).

Ethernet Controller is Intel Pro 100/VE or Intel Pro 1000/MT (both were build in into M2) network adapter or

Network Controller is Intel Pro Wireless 2200GB or 2100 (same as above, both were build in in most cases. Others too like Atheros and Cisco but not so often) or

Unknown device is Infrared

Multimedia audio controller is SoundMax Sound

Please allow me two questions:
Why don't you use the recovery media. It's much more easier?
Did you try to install any driver from Toshiba's driver page?

Hey there justcurious,
Can you confirm the version of the WiDi Driver you have by chance? This may need to be udpated. I've noticed some issues around the USB-IF xHCI USB Host Controller across the forums and I wonder if they are related. Thank you!

son just bought a d600 dell laptop. wireless card is suppose to be internal. when he went to device manager under network it did not show the card. does this mean no card or does he need to install the driver? would really appreciate..

Answer:dell d600 shows not wireless card in device manager

What's the 7-character "service tag number" of that Dell?

Is that a Dell Latitude D600? If it is, it has both wired and wireless network adapters.

In the Device Manager, what's listed in Network Adapters and Other Devices? Spell them exactly as you see them listed there.

You didn't mention which version of Windows it's using. From what I can determine, the Dell Latitude D600 came with XP.

so, i got Windows 10 immediately once it was available.. even prior to that my touchpad was going in and out, like sometimes it sticks and doesnt work, but rubbing on it with a little force got it back and it'd be fine for hours or however long.

btw i have a Dell Inspiron 1564. all of a sudden tonight, the touchpad doesnt work AT ALL. previously this has happened like once a month, but i just restart my comp and its all good.. but now it wont work at all, AND the computer doesnt recognize there being a touchpad or any touchpad drivers under device manager.. its just blank, the only time the "Mice and other pointing devices" even shows up is if i have a USB mouse plugged in, otherwise it isnt even listed.

i've tried installing the driver from Dell, but using that one gives me the error that Windows 10 doesnt allow this app, or doesnt have support for it. i used some third party sites to try Alps and Synpatics drivers (heard that Synpatics might work), and they install fine, unlike the one from Dell, they dont give me the Windows 10 compatibility error.. but they just dont do ANYTHING. still nothing shows up in device manager.

most "solutions" for touchpad related problems are to uninstall the driver and then restart Windows and let the drivers reinstall.. but i cant uninstall anything, and nothing is there to reinstall. i've also tried Windows Update to see if anything popped up there.. nothing did.

any ideas?

Answer:I installed audio drivers but device manager shows a yellow triangle o

Please open Device Manager, and then post a screenshot of the Properties for the device with the triangle. I would also suggest ensuring that your audio/sound card is connected properly, or if it's a onboard sound card then it may even be broken.

How old is your computer?

Update your System Specifications with Speccy, and then copy this information into your System Specifications: Go to your UserCP, and then select Edit System Spec in the left pane. Copy the information from Speccy into the required fields. These System Specifications will then follow your every post.

I would strongly suggest installing some form of ant-virus protection on your computer.

Install and perform full scans with:Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download
Microsoft Security Essentials | Protect against viruses, spyware, and other malware

Remember to install the free version of Malwarebytes not the free trail; untick the free trial box during installation. MSE is the most lightweight and compatible with the Windows 7 operating system

Hi there,
I've been having a hard time with my secondary hard drive showing up when I go into the "computer" option under my start menu. It does appear under Device Manager though.
I've reseated my cables numerous times, purchased and used new Sata cables, and I'm also running a new motherboard. I've also changed and disabled all my sleep options already.
I recently switched to using a Primary SSD for my programs to be installed on but ever since switching over to my SSD my HD no longer appears and I can't save anything to it.
Any advice? Thanks.

Answer:Secondary Hard Drive Disappears in 'Computer' Shows in Device Manager

You seem to need to assign the drive a path. Do this:
1. Open the windows search bar by pressing the windows logo in the bottom left corner of your screen
2. Search disk
3. Find the option labeled Create and Format Hard Disk Partitions
4. Select it
5. Find your hidden disk
6. Then assign your disk a path and it should appear in My Computer

Hope I helped!

Since updating from Win 8 Pro to Win 8.1 Pro the umts-modem-driver isn't working properly.
In the device manager he is marked with the yellow exclamation mark.

Where can I get a driver? In the download area I still only find x86 drivers for win8.1

Answer:Windows 8.1: 3G UMTS-Modem driver shows problems in device manager

You did not post any info about your notebook model but i presume that such drivers are not released if you did not find any on the Toshiba driver page.
But I think you should try the Win 8 driver since the 8.1 version isn?t very different as the Win 8

I have a Western Digital 250 GB external HD that had been working perfectly until yesterday afternoon. It has been making this repetitive whirring noise *not the clicking noise of death* and it died before I had a chance to copy the data onto another external. When I plug in the USB it makes the connection noise, but autoplay does not come up and it does not show up in my computer anymore. I did look in device manager and disk management and it does show up but it had no drive letter and it says unreadable. (I've attached a screenshot of this)

Is there any way I can recover the data off of it? Should I just take it out of the enclosure and hook it up to a desktop pc?

Answer:External hard drive broken shows up in device manager but not My Computer

It sounds like the drive itself is dead rather than the enclosure. The repetitive 'whirring' noise likely is immediately following the click of death, just the click is pretty quiet on a lot of notebook drives. If yours is a full size (3.5") drive in that enclosure, then perhaps you are right and the click of death isn't occurring.

In either case, its not going to hurt to hook it up internally, because even if it doesn't work you aren't any worse off than you are now.

Despite what the Device Manager says the drive could still be bad. In the Device Manager check under IDE ATA/ATAPI controller to see if any of the controllers have changed to PIO mode instead of the faster DMA or UDMA mode.

hi,i reinstalled xp professional.  my computer is a compaq presario SR1710NX and found i have no sound.  device manager shows a slew of yellow question marks (exclamation points) that indicate the problem.  there is a screenshot that illustrates this.i have installed everest (i hope i have the right version) and i have a screenshot of the output of the motherboard chipset.  is this what was needed?i know i need to learn more about drivers and the proper installation of them, and i am working on this (i've been on google).  in the meantime, i just want to be sure that i get the proper drivers installed and get this computer working right.the last time i came here asking for help a fine gentleman provided me with a link, and all i had to do was click on the link.  everything else was done inside the computer.  i couldn't believe there was no setup, installation, file extensions, nothing!  incredibly easy.i know there is a procedure that takes place between the question marks in device manager, the running of everest, and the link that gets clicked on, any advice, tutorials, links, etc, that could be shared with me would be most appreciated.thanks.  [Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]

Answer:device manager shows question marks galore. no sound. screenshots.

Have you installed the chipset driver? If not, download and install it. Then install your other drivers.

I have a problem with a new external hard drive I bought. In Windows XP, it appears as "Seagate Expansion Desk USB Drive" under Disk Drives in Device Manager, but it doesn't appear in Disk Management, where all the drives are listed. It also doesn't appear in My Computer. How can I allocate it a drive letter so I can use it? My drives go up to K, so it should be allocated L drive. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Seagate External Hard Drive shows up in Device Manager, but not Disk Management.

Attach the drive to a different usb port. Open a command prompt. Type
list disk
Copy and paste the result. You can do this by clicking the icon of a monitor in the menu bar Edit > Select All. Edit > Copy. Right click in your post > Paste.

I recently acquired a twist with 8GB Ram and the 128SSD. Very noce machine and the bugs will work themselves out im sure. My concern is what do I do with these entries in the Lenovo software showing device manager issues but nothing is visible in the device manager itself? Any ideas?  Also, I recently uninstalled an old version of Adobe Acrobat and wanted to delete the folder in program files x86 folder. I do not have permission??? Though I can agree why this was done, there should simply be a warning before it allows you to delete... is there a solution to this?

Answer:Twist 3347 Lenovo SU shows 2 devices not installed, not shown in Device manager..?? And Windows 8..

Hi, FastEarle
For clarification purposes, what exact issues are you getting in the Lenovo software? Are they error messages, alerts, etc.?
As for the not having permissions to delete a folder, I would check two things: 1) The permissions and title of your user account (Administrator, etc.). 2) If you right-click on the folder that you tried to remove earlier ang select Properties, this will bring up a new window. In this window, select the Security tab. This tab will tell you the permissions of that folder. Make sure the checkmarks are on the left hand side under Allow.
Good luck, and let me know how it goes

My Windows XP on my Sony Vaio -vgn-t370p laptop does not have sound anymore. When I look in the device manager it shows that all devices are working properly but ( there are not yellow question marks), I still do not have sound. Please help?

Answer:Device Manager shows sound device is working but still no sound

What Service Pack is your XP at?

Did your sound just disapear or did you have a malware infection?

Have you checked that the volume is not muted?
Also check in Services (Control Panel > Administrative tools > Services) that the Windows Audio service is set to Started and Automatic.

What I would try is the below and if you are at SP2 only then install the UAA driver from HERE and reboot, possibly even re-install your audio driver once the UAA driver is installed.

Or if you are at SP3, then try the below originally posted from muskesnipe

Goto Start>Run and type in regedit , then click OK.
Click the plus signs in front of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SYSTEM, Current Control Set, Control, and finally, click Windows.
In the right panel you will see CSDVersion.
Right click it, choose Modify.
In the highlighted input window, you should see 300. Change it to 200.
Click OK, close regedit and restart your PC. Windows will now think it is SP2 and allow you to install the HD_Audio/kb888111xpsp2.exe and your Sound Driver.

Make sure to reboot and then test your sound BEFORE, changing the value back to 300.

Then follow the same steps to change it back to SP3. Change the 200 back to 300.Click to expand...

Your Sony Drivers are HERE

Ok i've never had this problem before.
Yesterday i tried to play Batman Asylum and i was unable to play it because it says i need a better graphic card.I've played the game with no problem 2 days ago with my graphic card nvidia 8600 GT.

So i checked the device manager and dxdiag and it is showing the wrong graphic card which is NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 43. The one attached to my computer is actually 8600 GT.

So someone help me please ?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Solved: Wrong Graphic Card Showing On Dxdiag and Device Manager.

For some ODD reason, your computer is confused... and is referring the GF6150 as your primary display adapter.

You should disable it in BIOS, if possible.

ok people brace yourself for this one...

my computer is connected to my house network through a usb wireless device and it has worked fine since i got it. i use p2p programs often and found that the limit on half-open connections is too low for me so i set out to find a fix after finding many sites that resommened and used the lvllord fix for this i got it and ran it. it said i had to reboot which i decided 2 do since i had also installed a utility for a new mouse that i got, which also needed a reboot.

so i rebooted my comp, can connect to the network fine, signal strength good, dhcp is working, but i cant access anything on the network. i cant get google, the router, the modem or even other computers on the network. so i think that the patch did somethin bad to the tcpip.sys file when i ran it so i hit the unistall button on it (though it says that the limit is still at 10 andnot 50 which is wat i changed it to??) i hit unistall, says it failed somethin 2 do with windows changin the file or somethin. anyway i thought that possibly the utility i installed did somethin (very remote, but nonetheless) so i unistalled it and rebooted, nuthin.

so i tried disconnecting the usb dongle and running a network cable and hooray it all works again. so that ruled out the .sys file being bad. so i thought id unistall the usb dongle and reinstall (maybe the driver didnt like the patch). but device manager locked up.

so i thought ah well, deal with it later gunna watch a video then maybe... Read more

Hi, I have a Lenovo T430s. The laptop has two hard drives, a 256gb SSD and a 500gb HDD. Both show in Device Manager but only the SSD shows up in exploer. 500gb HDD: HGST HTS725050A7E630256GB SSD: LITEONIT LMT-256M6M mSATA 256GB I updated the drivers and they said they are updated. Troubleshooting that I haven't tried is going into BIOS.  I'm not sure, or don't know how to get into BIOS, and when I do, I do not know what to try once I get in. I'm not sure why both hard drives are not showing up in explorer on it's own. Details of my computer:

I have an external hard drive that wasn't showing up anywhere on my computer, so I replaced the hard drive case and now the external hard drive is found in device manager, but not in disk management or my computer. I am running windows 8, and there is data on the external hard drive that I would like to have access to.

The disk drive that is in the case is a Samsung HD103SI

I have used the rescan command in disk management. It showed as Disk 2 Unknown and not initialized. (Please note this is not a new disk and it has data on it that I am hoping to retrieve).

Some information that might help:

The system is:
LENOVO 90B70019US Lenovo H50-50

Using Belarc Advisor the drives show as:
MATSHITA DVD-RAM SW840 [Optical drive]

ASMT 2115 USB Device [Hard drive] -- drive 2, s/n 00000000000000000000
ST1000DM003-1ER162 [Hard drive] (1000.20 GB) -- drive 0, SMART Status: Healthy
WDC WD10EZEX-60M2NA0 [Hard drive] (1000.20 GB) -- drive 1, SMART Status: Healthy

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
