Preferred Solution: CD Drive Probs

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Question: C:\ Drive Probs

I have a weird problem going on. I install something, and when I get tired of it,I just uninstall it. But when I remove the folder from my C:\ drive and fully uninstall the program,it still takes up the same space as if it were installed! For example,I have 81% left on my hard drive. I install something and it goes down to like 79%. I install the program and remove the folder and registry stuff but it's STILL 79%. Can anyone help in fixing this? Thanx in advance

Question: DVD Drive Probs...

I'm building a computer for a friend and put this drive in, windows installs fine, then I try to install Office recieving the following error message:

Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed

I try other CD's and I get the same message so with a quick google I sort that problem out and it now works fine after changing the Transfer Mode to PIO Only in device manager.

Now the problem I have is it doesn't show the icon of any cd's it appears as:

The only CD I've managed to find that shows its icon is a random one I found at the bottom of a box that looks like its 10years old:

I thought it may have been the CD's so I tried them on another computer and they appear fine. Please could someone help me? The CD's seem to read fine its just the icons don't show, the computers for a friend and I don't want to give it him half decent.

Please could someone help me?

Thank you

Answer:DVD Drive Probs...

seems like wrong functioning bios. try to update the firmware of the drive. this is at your own risk. first check the drives web page according to the model. you can find out the model from device manager.

I reverted back to a factory back up image on my pc and have altered partition sizes on the hard drive. I now seem to be experiencing a problem intsalling software from CD. When I try to load Norton Anti-Virus, the machine hangs and then quits to a blue screen where I have to reboot. Other disks take an age to install and the drive seems to be spinng much faster than before.Any ideas??I though about reinstalling the CD driver?

Answer:CD-ROM drive and installation probs

Assume you are using Windows XP ?Did you create a restore point prior to altering partition sizes on the hard drive ? If so go back to that point .... look at 'Windows Help' if you do not know how !Look at 'System' in Control Panel to see if CD is working correctly and if you need reinstall CD driver from here.

First - My Specs:
Biostar M7NCDpro mobo, Athlon xp processor (1gb)
1.5gb ram
Nvidia Geforce 6600 GT gfx card
Win XPhome sp2
MAXTOR 120GB Hdd, 2 equal partitions

until yesterday - also had 300GB seagate HDD (set as slave), partitioned into 5 drives (2x40gb, 2x60gb, 1x100gb)

Following various probs over the last few weeks, backed up essentials to a different computer, reformatted c:/ and reinstalled windows.

Now I cant get it to recognise the seagate HDD - physically installed, checked its recognised in CMOS, but its not showing in windows.

I know windows has probs recognising huge HDD's, but is there any way I can con it into recognising the drive without having to reformat using the seagate diskwizard, and losing the stuff on it? (stuff on it is non-essential but useful)

Answer:Hard Drive access probs - pls help :)

Well, first, for Windows to recognise the correct size, you need to have at least SP1 installed.. After that, if it still gives you hard time, try running a Scandisk on boot.. worked for me..

Good luck.. John

PS: might take a few restarts, for some reason it doesn't recognise it right away.. guess Microsoft's to blame for that..

Hola, whenver I try to explore a music CD, Explorer will list the number of tracks (cool), but says the size is only 1 Kb (bad).

I use Nero to burn, and if I try to copy the music cd, it will only copy the track titles with no music.

How do I get Explorer to show the actual size of the tracks? Its almost like the cd drive is not fully accessing the tracks.

Ps. i run win 98

Answer:CD Drive not Accessing - Buring Probs

Actually that's normal. The real music tracks are there, you're just seeing the 1K CDA. You are burning the whole song.

Are you using the, "copy entire disk" option on Nero's opening screen or the "Audio CD" option in Music?

If you open Windows Media Player and "view" mode "Now Playing" options "Show Playlist" you'll see the actual track length. Minutes and seconds.

Answer:Having probs adding 2nd hard drive.

"will not boot up" means what? It doesn't power on? The POST process fails? The boot process fails? The operating system fails?

What kind of hard drives are we talking about? If they are IDE, then make sure you have the master/slave jumpers and the cable orientation right.

Has anyone any suggestions? ThanksRuss

Answer:Hard Drive and settings probs

The BIOS is almost certainly set to 'NONE' on that port so, without getting in to them, no chance.Anyway, a 4Gb drive is not worth it. People are throwing away 40Gb drives.

Have you installed the drivers for this drive? When you install the drive it will not appear in MY computer. You first have to initialize the drive and then format it; to appear it in my computer...Start > Run > Type: diskmgmt.mscClick ok.Right click the new drive, choose initialize and then format away.As the drive is 200GB you would need Windows XP Service Pack 1 for Windows to recognise the full capacity.

Does anyone know what the problem is here? Is it because the PC is Win98 or too old?

and welcome, if you'll loose the caps, you'll probably have more luck in getting help.....also, if you'll repost back to the same thread, everyone can follow along and know what has been tried, what failed, etc. so we aren't just wasting each others' time going in circles......

This will more than likely be called a "duplicate thread" and will be closed accordingly by one of the mods.....

Hey, I am new to this site and hope I am in the right place.
Firstly I should point out that my name says it all!! I am ok with comps and running them and anti virus and stuff but the jargon and systems etc I dont get. So any help given, plz explain, thanks.
Ok turned my comp on today and my external wont load at all. Been to device manager and it says USB Mass Storage Device which is my hard drive. However above it there is a yellow explanation mark next to CSIS/RAID Controllers. I dont know what this is but When I right click it and go to properties it says:

'Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)'

Could this be the problem as it has never done this before?
I run Windows XP and my external HD is 160Gb Freecom Classic Hard Drive. I have uninstalled it and reloaded, nothing changed. I have also tried changing USB ports but yet again no change.
Any help more than welcome,
HOWEVER I should also point out that my external Hard drive has every photo of my son on it from when he was born and I do not want to lose any of this data as I am sure u can understand.
Thanks For reading and thank u sooo much for any ideas, tips and advice given, it is very much appreciated!!

Hi, I am running Windows Vista on my laptop, and recently the disk drive will not read any disks. I thought I would reboot to factory settings with the recovery cd, but the laptop will not even read that, or even start up if a disk is inserted. It used to be fine, so I cannot work out what is wrong. I have done a system restore to the earliest point it would let me, and I have also run a registry fixer, and nothing seems to work. Any ideas plz?

Also when a disk is inserted, the drive makes lots of strange noises, like its trying to read, but nothing happens?!?

I have clean installed XP Pro on two seperate drives one an IDE and the other a SATA. The installs were done independently (disk by disk). After installing successfully on the SATA drive I reconnected both drives configuring the IDE as master. I then went through the Recovery Console to enter a 'Load Identifier' for each to make things easier. Upon restart I was given the option of the two drives (the IDE being C: and configured as master, and the SATA being E:)and chose the name I had given the SATA Drive. However, the IDE drive loaded insttead. Thinking I had obviously got the two the wrong way round I restarted and then chose the other drive. Wrong! The Ide drive was again the drive that loaded. I can't figure this out as I've done this process successfully before but with two IDE drives (admittedly after asking advice due to having limited knowledge), so is the SATA the problem? I know I'm missing something obvious. The boot.ini file reads as follows:default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS[operating systems]multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="drive1" /fastdetectmulti(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="drive2" /fastdetectmulti(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetectIn order to have the two drives bootable what should this read and how do I go about rectifying this prob?

Answer:Dual Boot XP and XP on seperate drive probs

There is only a defined disk of which they all point to the same disk. So each option points to the same disk...So chage to: multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="drive1" /fastdetect To whatever line to disk.

i got this HP Pavilion zt1130 from an older gentleman that was looking to just throw it away. its an older laptop, made around 2002ish, but the first day i turned it on and worked w/ it, it worked perfectly fine no glitches or even slowness despite its 256 RAM. i would prob have this problem solved by now however, the older gentlman had removed the cd-rom Multibay drive ad forgot where it went so it does not a cd drive to boot from and ignores USB cd-roms.
By the end of that day i performed a standered restart, afterinstalling and configureing lots of updates and such and the hard drive crapped out. i put in another compatible hard drive and it loaded XP, ad jus before it switched to the blue Welcome screen, BSod!!! frustrated, i carefully tookthe HD out and replaced yet another one in jus to be sure. it did hte same exact thing! i took both of the HDs out and put them in another laptop, and XP booted up just fine! the HP laptop DOES work, the system battery is only a year old, and the mobo battery too. i got the BSoD to stop restarting by shutting off he auto-restart when the HD was in the other laptop. it said sumthing the same thing when either HD was in. it said to check the HD, remove it if ts new, check for viruses(very unlikely being newly formatted) and to run chkds... I have 1tb western digi external drive. It stopped working on me the other day. Drive number is WD10EAVS...Any who. I've been having problems with windows reading it. Started about a 3 months ago. So I took it out of it's enclosure and hooked it straight up to my sata line. It was working fine for bout 2 months until bout 2 day's ago. Now my bios doesn't see it nor does windows, but getdataback reads it but as a 2tb HDD not a 1tb HDD. It doesn't either pick up the name of the drive or brand or any thing like that. As it does with all my other HDD. Now you can hear the disk spinning so I know it's getting power. I've tried all sata lines in my p.c. but windows or Bios doesn't read it anymore. Any one be able to point me into the right direction to solve this problem? Could it be my MBR, or the circuit board on the HDD itself? I have three other sata drives that run fine no probs what so ever. I've fixed HDD's before but have never ran across this situation....Any help would be very much so obliged....

I hope you can help me. I have just about given up.

Last year at some point, toward the last quarter, I noticed a pop up upon start up. It was what I believe to be a virus of some sort. It was called ***something***defender. I can't remember the first word. I tried to remove it from in the add/remove programs and I thought I was successful. But, I wasn't. I had my personal IT guy from work look at it and he removed it as it was set up to start up when the computer would start up.

I was given an ipod for Christmas and I tried to download itunes and I was not able to. At first I thought it might be because I didn't have all the requirements (including the room/memory) to support it. I had more RAM added and I thought it should have worked. When I tried again to download itunes, it promted me to download service pack 2. (I have XP) I tried doing it from the internet but it had downloaded 0 KB. Strange but ok. I ordered a cd be sent to me so I could download manually. It didn't work. My computer won't take that update. I try it and once it gets to a certain point, it crashes and turns off. I briefly see a blue screen with mumbo jumbo on it and it reboots itself. So, I opted to never be able to download itunes. I mean I am still able to successfully use the internet, so... so what, i don't get itunes. No biggie.

Well, strange things started happening, I suppose this past February. I was surfing the web to fi... Read more

Long story short.. in the past when I used to use my old flash drive, all I had to do was just copy the mp3 files, rename the files with sequential numbers, so that they play according to my liking..

scenario changed , new Flash Drive, San Disk - I don't need any complicated stuffs.. I just need my Flash Drive mp3 files to play according to the sequential numbers but they don't. I have copied all the files & renamed the files with sequential numbers but my amplifier starts playing the files on its wish.. The file which I have placed at 001, plays at 011, 004 plays at 022, only 1 or 2 files on a whole play according to my numbering..

I'm clueless what more to do to sort this out.. would love some help .. Just want my music files to play according to sequential order, there are roughly just 22 files on the drive

Answer:Probs with Arranging mp3 files on Flash Drive according to numbers ?

I'm wondering if you're going to have to build a playlist. I haven't done such in years. I await wiser gurus for this good topic.

Ok setting up my comp, nothing major we've found, until ........
.............. installing windows xp

The pc boots it from the cd, starts installtaion, does the format thing, copies files to installtion folders, then reboots as normal .......
... and starts from scratch all over again, except that there is a windows install there, 'cos it tells me so, and warns me about installling another OS.
It just doesnt appear to go to the next part of the installation - I'm just stuck in a loop.

I've tried it with and without doing the F6, and using the floppy with the mobo RAID drivers on, no difference.

Any advice gratefully received

Answer:windows xp - sata hard drive - installation probs

After the f6, do you get any indication the drivers are installed? When you reboot, does the bios give you a message to the effect of no serial storage device installed?
You can also try hitting f6 much earlier in the install, don't wait for the prompt. Tap f6 as soon as it starts booting from the cd, until you get a slightly different installing mass storage drivers screen, and when you get to the normal screen, it will show them as already installed. When you reboot, the bios should give no message about mass storage. The Abit board may not give you the same message, it was on an Aopen board I saw that problem.

hello to all, new to the forum, hope to find some solutions here. i live in alaska, many miles from town, i have access to the net via sat up link (starband) i started having probs about 2 weeks ago, when i boot up i get a message saying i have hard drive failure, when i do the f1 boot it takes me to windows xp. it takes forever to load and sometimes i get the dreaded blue screen saying windows has shut down to prevent damage to the system. it dumps the memory and about 30 percent of the time it will function again. another thing it is doing is when i run games, it tries to freeze and stutters and sometimes stops for up to a minute before jerking back to life again. also, i have not been able to access my yahoo mail account for a week, when i go to log on, i use my name and password and as soon as i hit "enter" or "continue" it just closes down. this is also happening about half the time when i go to random pages on the web. it just shuts down and goes back to desktop. i am running an active virus scanner, i do spybot search and destroy, i am not cheap, but have tried a few programs that don't do all that well, i am tired of the trial and error and spending lots of money on crap. lol, i am hoping someone can either guide me through some diagnostics or recommend a functional program that works. i am somewhat ok on my comp, i can follow directions and also have another comp to follow suggestions while i work on this one. also, i ran hijack this and came... I just built a new pc and when i run cmd as admin, and do a chkdsk/f or /r, everytime it says the drive is locked, and it will do the chkdsk on sys restart... The thing thats freaking me out is,this same problem happened with the pc i JUSt had before this one...

IM 99% sure i used the same disc for both installs of win 7 x64

Is there something wrong with my install discs or something?? did the files i moved from the old pc have a virus or something in it?

Are the drives locked because i didnt partition them correctly?

Not really sure what to do here...

a while back I ran out of HD space on my Dell Dimension with 80 GB hard drive, I work in Audio... So I bought an internal Sata 500 GB drive and was told it would perform better in live tracking sessions to make it the new master drive, and it seemed easy enough so I went through the process at the time to have the BIOS make it the new drive and move everything over...

however, when I ran windows again most of my programs worked fine but a few started with error messages, yet still started anyway. But now I need to update and uninstall some programs and when I try to do this, for example Microsoft Office (which i own and have the official CDs for!) it says the original installation can't be uninstalled due to there being no uninstall information... this happens with a few other programs as well. What is my best bet to getting these off my machine? I can't even re-install these programs because they detect previous versions already installed, but they're nonworking versions that tell me to reinstall. Any help would be appreciated, If I didn't supply enough specific info just let me know what else I might need to list. I'm running windows XP sp3.

Hi all,
I've spent the past six hours trying to work out a USB Flash Drive mapping (and mount/dismount) problem in Windows 2003 (standard). I have been browsing around and found problems with conflicting mapped network drives, conflicting smart card readers etc... but my problem seems to be a bit different.

To be clear on what I've tried here's a list:
1. Close and re-open Windows Explorer
2. Uninstall and re-install all USB controller devices out of the device manager.
3. Re-assigned the drive letter for the removable device via disk manager (i.e. made the device drive Z)
4. updated bios to latest revision (from MAR 2002) I'm using a relatively older system 700MHz - AMD Duron system on a Gigabyte board.

Things I've checked
BIOS Settings: OK - USB support enabled
Drive mapping: NO Network drives are mapped
Just 1 HD (C) and a CDROM (D) and burner (E)

1. When the flash drive is plugged in while the computer is booting
2. When the disk manager is open - must be the active window within the computer management console. (I can mount and dismount the drive time after time without any problems). As soon as I close the disk manager (and computer management console), that's when re-mounting the flash drive fails.

1. After Windows is loaded, then unplugging the flash drive... Dis... Read more

Before tweaking with any RAM timings:

I have been establishing some "baseline" benchmarks and stability tests (BST).

Anyway I was running memtest86 and in its second "run" it found errors, ~23 or 26, during test 6 giving addresses for locations, etc. Tried to find a print (or generate) report option but couldn't find it!

Anyway loading up the OS I went into my profile and found below. It seems one of the addresses on my RAM has become impaired and now my programs aren't "populating" properly as start-up apps. This is concerning as NOD32 has become impaired to the extent it isn't functioning, Outpost FW has to be manually started and Windows Defender won't even respond! I would have guessed this was a spyware issue (all security knocked out) if I had'nt been using memtest86 immediately before all this happened. I realise this could be in either the software/hardware or spyware sections it's just memtest86 get's used by OC and they may be more experienced with this app.

Answer:Ran memtest86 found probs, now have OS or sys probs, AGHHH HELP!!!!!

Any suggs here greatly appreciated.

Sys still under warranty and if it is a RAM stick should be able to easily get it replaced. How can I ID which and what would be the best way to communicate with the shop?

Or is it simply a matter of removing and replacing the RAM to "refresh" (sceptical off this myself)

OS: Windows XP SP2
[background story]

Alright, so some time ago [as in months ago] I was messing around with a SCSI DVD drive emulator called Virtual DAEMON Manager. At one point I inadvertently mounted a bootable CD, and the emulated drive I ended up mounting it to [S:] then redirected to my C: drive. The problem was fixed when I unmounted the drive, but it'd end up being a nuisance to me for a while afterwards.

It goes like this: I was trying to get Partition Magic to copy my Windows drive to my slave HDD so that I may have two copies of my Windows directory in case I ever end up having to format one of the drives [important, since I lost my XP installation CD!]. It took me quite a while to figure everything out [and I came close to causing the very thing I was trying to prevent several times in the process], but I eventually got it to work and I now have Windows and Linux on my 200GB master drive [formerly slave] and a backup of Windows on a 20GB slave drive.

[/background story]
Now here are the problems that I've been having for a while now:

I now have a "ghost" drive on S: - That is, it is recognized by My Computer as a seperate drive even though it is identical to C:, and anything that happens to S: will happen to C: and vice-versa. I'll often type in /mount unmount S: into the command prompt [a command intended for Linux ext2 drives], and though it would work until my computer shut down I would get a few minor errors on the next start-u... Hi, please can you help. I had a problem over the weekend with trojan, aurora etc which you helped me fixed. That's all fine now - but my email now doesn't work properly after I downloaded an assortment of spyware. For example, I can't send emails and the spell check on my email keeps being stopped by something (not me) everytime it starts.
Also, when I try to turn off my computer, a box keeps coming up saying something about rundlll32.exe and stops the computer turning off???
I seem to have too vigorous controls on the spyware I downloaded - but I am a real computer novice and can't work out how to change them.
Please can you help.

I have spybot, Microsft anti-spyware, Winpatrol and spyware guard. and I work on Windows XP.

Hi Kevmacca

My feeling is that because IE is so inbuilt into the operating system, you should first make sure that you do not have any malware on your machine that may be making the system do this. I would post a log at the HJT forum, making sure you read the rules first. Then if there is no problem, we can move on to other ideas to try to isolate what is happening.

I tried ISO Buster (not that I understood it too well), but it would recover about 60 percent and then slow down to a crawl. when I left it for about an hour and came back to check on it the program was "not responding". FP doesn't have an accurate representation when in normal mode for how it'll look in browser, so you may have to use 'position absolutely' and readjust position by jumping back and forth in 'Preview in Browser' under 'file'. (Your gif may look out of position in normal view.) The 'preview' view is no good.

Nvidia GeforceFX 5200 AGP 128mb DDR
Graphics Card. And it as been Updated.

Please Help!

Answer:Having LAG Probs. Need help

No firewall, not recommended, you could be hacked.
I would get free zone alarm if I was you.

Also check your pc for spyware and virus, this may be the problem, hackers, spyware and virus slowing your pc to a crawl.

I am assuming you have a broadband connection, when you have cleaned your pc, go here to get info on how to tweak your connection.

If you need the free anti virus, firewall and spyware killers go here tech section.

Question: several probs!

I have several issues I need help with...

1) EXCEL : My wife is a teacher and the report cards are created using EXCEL. Is there a ways to enter the same data on every sheet for a cell? For ecxample... The date , instead of manually copying and pasting 35 times, I would like a command that would allow me to do it on one cell, and have it affect the same cells on other sheets.

2) Slow Speed...): I have read several posts on slow speeds. I am experiencing similar probs too. I ran PIt stop and Clean up, that helped. I also ran SPY BOT, and Adaware. I will try Defragging, hope that helps... MSCONFIG is clean too. I try to open up Mozilla bookmarks and it takes a long time for them to open, like 1.5 secs, usually is instant.
weird... Anyway, just wanted to throw that out too, hope someone has an idea.
BTW, you are liste din PCWORLD for THE place to get tech support. Hope this helps business!
Tx, for the help.

Question: M/brd Probs

I have an ELITE K7S5A M/brd spare and want to use an XP2000 or higher CPU to build another machine. The manual says supported range is:650MHz 1.4GHz,FSB:200MHz, 266MHz. But a computer shop that installed a new identical brd on my sons machine says they used an XP2000. Although on his XP system info it says: System Manufacturer ECS
System Model K7S5A
System Type X86-based PC
Processor x86 Family 6 Model 6 Stepping 2 AuthenticAMD ~1244 Mhz!!! Have I been duped? Or is my sons machine only working at half speed? Is it possible to fit XP2000 to this brd successfully? Or should I change brd? Thanks for any help

Answer:M/brd Probs

Your XP2000 will work with that K7S5A. The specs you found for your motherboard were published before the newer AMD Athlon XPs chips came out.

Make sure that you have the FSB speed set to 133mhz in the bios. All AMD processors default to 100mhz at initial install.
The Multiplier for your XP2000 is 12.5x and @ 100mhz that's approximately 1250mhz.

Increase the FSB speed to 133mhz and you'll at 1662mhz that the XP2000 is rated at.
