Question: computer hangs

Hi
Have a compaq presario running windows XP.
Have problems with it hanging frequently. Am trying several things I was told to do including now have 256mb ram.
Went into Advanced System Information - Error Log and saw this:
AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to write to an illegal IO port address [0x70], which lies in the 0x70 - 0x71 protected address range. This could lead to system instability. What does this mean? What can I do about it? Any help will be appreciated.

Preferred Solution: computer hangs

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: computer hangs

If you computer's BIOS tries to write to a port in ACPI Machine Language (AML), you will receive similar errors.

Windows NT-based computers, including Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, do NOT allow these operations as they can cause instability.

To resolve this problem, contact your manufacturer about a BIOS upgrade.

I don't think I have actually gotten a BSOD yet on this computer. It's about 1mo old. As the title says, I've been playing some games, and my computer will freeze during a game. There's no BSOD, but the audio will loop/hang. Nothing works and I have to do a hard reboot.

This is the Windows log about it:

You are not getting any dump files

You are playing Star Wars, can you uninstall the Game, delete any folders that it has on your computer under C:\Program Files\
Reboot
Resintall again

Hello: Please help! I use a VAIO notebook, running Windows 10. In the past few days the computer has had a mind of its own. It slows down, gives that spinning wheel of death (the blue circle) when using Word, and also seems to do things that I didn't ask it to do, like close a program, or choose a tab in a program.  My biggest problem now is that when I try to work on a Word document, either Word won't open at all, giving me an error message, or once I get in there, as soon as I try to scroll down on a page, the blue wheel comes up. Then Word hangs, then the computer hangs. Is this a virus? What should I do?Wait, I just did a Windows defender scan. It shows: C/Program files/KMSpico/cert/install all.cmd and two other KMspico files. Could this be the problem. Can Windows Defender deal with this or should I do something else? Thanks in advance.

Answer:KMSpico Word hangs itself and hangs the computer

No, it is not a virus. Look here:http://kmspico.us/QuoteBEWARE: This tool is created to demonstrate how activation mechanism works and how to bypass it. I am having trouble with a 6 month old IBM R51 laptop - when I select TURN OFF COMPUTER from within Windows and the START button - the computer sometimes hangs and will not shut down. I have to press the power button to reset. Any idea what could be causing this?

Thanks!

Answer:Computer Hangs When Turn Off Computer Selected In Windows

Welcome to BC! There are many possible causes, however there is one common cause. Often XP's exit sound file gets corrupt and if it does not run then XP won't shut down. I am not sure based on what you have told us so far if this is the issue or not, but let's see:Go to:Start > Control Panel > Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices > Sounds and Audio Devices > Sounds tabUnder Program Events scroll down until you see Exit Windows. Highlight Exit Windows by clicking on it once. Then under Sounds choose None. Click Apply and finally OK. Reboot if possible, or shut down computer and restart manually. Once it is up and running, shut down computer by going to Start > Turn Off Computer. See if it will shut down on it's own now.If it does, the only difference will be that you will not longer hear the 2 seconds of music that XP usually plays as it shuts down.

My computer hangs when loging on to a Windows 2003 server at the applying computer settings stage. The workstation is running XP Pro SP2.Any ideas?

Answer:Computer hangs on applying computer settings

..click here;en-us;329457Sounds like it? Except it says fixed in SP2 which you've said you're running. It sounds like something to do with Group Policy i'd say as I think that is the stage at which it is applied. Is this a 'new' thing? Only this machine? The question I always ask myself when things go wrong is 'whats changed' - that isn't clear from your post. Did it work before? When you say 'hangs' have you tried leaving it for a long period (say overnight) or do you mean it errors or what? Sounds like it can be very slow but eventually apply and I wonder if you're giving up after say 10 mins? (I appreciate that's too long but at least you'd know if it eventually gets there if you leave it)

Question: computer hangs

I have a Dell Dimenstions 4800 P4 2.4 gig PC. I am runniung XP home w/ SP2. I have had this machine for a little over a year now. The problem that I am having is this: The computer seems to hang every now and then. Usually this will happen when I am not using it after it turns on the screen saver. But every now and then it will happen when the PC is in use.

I had this same exact problem with the PC that I replaced with this one. That machine was a P2 350 running xp home w/o SP2. The first thing that I thought that it could be was my belkin USB hub that I had with the old machine, because everytime it hung up the lights on the hub would all be out. So I disconnected the hub and ran everything directly into the dell except for my flash card reader and my Axim PC link cable. After a week the without the hub the problem would still happen. So I started disconnecting hardware from the usb ports that I had when I had the old machine. This included just an external HD and a printer.

I have noticed that it happens a lot less now with out the external HD attached, but it still happens every now and then. I don'w know if this is a hardware or a software conflict so I will post this in both forums.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Question: Computer hangs

Hi
My computer hangs when I'm playing more demanding games.
When I play WoW it hangs as soon as I login. When I play cs or cs:source it usually hangs after 20 minutes or so. It does not show any errors or bluescreens and the only way to restart is to push the restart button or turn it off completly
My drivers and harware are up to date.

Answer:Computer hangs

Computer specs? I hope you have 1 gig of ram and a newer video card with at least 128 megs. Obviously cleaning temp files and defragging as well as removing startup items can help.

Both WoW and CS:Source can use over 300 megs. Since your computer is probably using 256+ megs at startup, it might be using your hard drive when out of memory which can cause thrashing or even lockups. Just went throught this and amemory upgrade helped.

Question: Computer hangs...

I'm trying to help my mother troubleshoot her laptop (it's Windows 7); thing is, I don't know what she was doing with it at all, or anything like that, and she doesn't seem to know what she did, either.

When she showed it to me, she had been browsing the Internet, and everything just completely froze. The mouse wouldn't move, buttons didn't do anything, the screen was just frozen. I held the power key down to turn it off, waited awhile, then powered it back on.

It gave me two options; the "recommended" option was something about looking to see if there were any damaged files, or something like that. I tried that, and it simply navigated to a screen with an "underwater" type background and a mouse pointer. I let it sit for about ten minutes on this screen, and nothing more happened. I once again manually powered it down and waited awhile.

The next time I turned it on, I chose the second option, start Windows normally. This took me to the "Starting Windows" screen, but it never booted to the desktop; it just stayed on the glowing Windows logo.

So, what could the problem be, here? What kind of fix is needed?

Answer:Computer hangs...

Nothing...?

Just a little update, I got it going into some kind of HP diagnostic tool, which allowed it to run some tests. It's failing the tests, though, and returning the following:

Failure ID: 9C4C6U-5HU5SA-XDO141-6OWOO3 (the "O"s might be "0"s, I can't really tell)

Product ID: XZ259UA#ABA

I entered the failure ID into Google, hoping to find some info on it, but it's not pulling up any results. :/

Question: Computer Hangs Up

Howdy,

This problem sprang up yesterday. Whenever I try to open a new tab the computer hangs up. Whenever I click on a link that someone has included in their post the computer hangs up.

In either case it takes about a minute or so for the web page to appear. I can switch from tab to tab with no problem. I have no problem refreshing a page.

Very odd.

I have updated and ran the following scans to try to exclude malware as the source of the problem. All scans came up clean.

Windows One Care, MBAM, SAS, Bit Defender and Kaspersky.

Any help would be appreciated !

Question: Computer Hangs

My computer seems to hang at certain times for no reason. It seems to occur only when shutting down a program, and it doesn't seem to make a difference which program is being shut down.

The computer will just sort of enter a kind of "pause mode" where there is an hourglass beside the mouse cursor. The ability to click on anything is lost and I eventually just shutdown my computer by pressing the power button and restarting it. After that things are fine.

This has been happening for some time now, and I installed 256 Mb of ram 3 days ago and still the same problem persists. It can occur once a day or twice a day or not at all.

Any thoughts? Thanks for your contributions.

Question: Computer hangs

This is a recent problem and i have not have issues with my laptop before a couple of days ago.

My specs are
Toshiba satellite P300
Vista Home Premium 32 bit Service Pack 2
intel(R) core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8600 @2.40GHz
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650
3035 Mb of ram availible but 4Gb in total on the laptop

Basically my laptop will randomly freeze for about 5-10 seconds then continue as normal every 2 or 3 minutes. It freezes completely randomly whether im running a program or not. During the freezes i am able to move the mouse and once the freeze is over everything returns to normal.
There has also not been any slow down of the laptop in terms of performance before or after the freeze.

I have used Avg and malwarebytes which both reported nothing.
I have attempted several system restores at different dates but all are unable to complete and either freeze or hang not progressing further.
I have also run hcidesign memtest which reported nothing

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

My PC freezes a lot, esp. if I have 5 or 6 google chrome tabs open at the same time and leave the PC unattended for several minutes. Same thing happens with other web browsers too but I prefer using chrome.

I am still running windows XP professional SP3 on a desktop machine. I am somewhat computer illiterate and a newbie so please forgive me. How can I tell if I have a possible video card problem? My video displayed on my LCD monitor comes from a VGA cable that connects to the video "whatever" on the motherboard I think. PC is pretty old but I would like to keep it for several more months until I can afford a new desktop. Finances are pretty tight right now. Can I buy a cheap video card? I have several PCI slots available that I can plug into.

When I right click on desktop icons, the context menu slowly fades in. Plus, I have had to reboot several times.....the computer hiccups and the font gets really blurry and all the images and icons displayed are huge and not clear. After I reboot, things are ok until it happens again and it is starting to happen more frequently. Please help. Can I just buy a cheap video card to get me thru about 6 more months or do you think I may have another problem? Any suggestions or help welcomed. Thanks for reading. I get this error msg ati2vag.dll driver error or something to that effect too and don't know what the heck it means.

Answer:Computer hangs a lot

The ati2vag.dll is a AMD driver library, Google Chrome is a complete resource hog, so I wouldn't be surprised it's causing problems on an old XP computer.

Although, your not experiencing any BSOD's, could you please follow these instructions and upload the resulting file?

We can try updating the driver, but I'm not sure how many drivers are going to be available since Windows XP has been officially stopped by Microsoft. I suspect there could be a memory leak too, which shouldn't be too difficult to resolve.

Question: Computer Hangs

We're having trouble with our computer frequently hanging. It seemed to start after we installed IE7 so I uninstalled it using add/remove programs and hid it in the auto update so it wouldn't automatically reinstall it. We're still having trouble. Our IE & occasionally OE lockup completely -- no error messages -- the cursor just sits in one spot and won't move. We can't even cont/alt/delete to shut it down from task manager. Refresh won't work either. We've been using control/escape then using the arrows to get to restart.

I've run superantispyware, adaware, and ccleaner. All that we get are some cookies. I've disabled all addons to see if that would help but we're still hanging. It doesn't seem to have any pattern to it. We're both technologically challenged. I saw on this site about Hijack This. Here's the log:

Question: Computer hangs

Hi All
I am running WinXP Home on an AMD 2600+ @ 768MB DDR 400mhz RAM with 40G 7200rpm HDD. The following happens. I leave my computer on for a couple of hours, after everything seems to run faultless. I would leave only media player on with music playing. This is something I have been doing in the past without proplems. I recently formatted the HDD on NTFS and reinstalled windows, as small things started hampering internet dial-up. Anyway, the problem is that the computer slows down as time goes by. Eventually, the PC would hang, and I would have to manually reboot the computer. Everything seems to work fine once I've rebooted. Could it be that the harddisk builds up heat, and eventually causes to PC to grind to a halt? Could I solve this problem by getting a harddrive cooler? I have been working on this problem for about 10 days, without success.

Recently I have noticed that i cannot open any files on my PC after it has sat idle for approx 1hr. The computer doesn't crash, I can still move the cursor, however when i click on any icon or the start menu, It won't open. I have recently installed IE7 and AVG anti-malware from last month's cover disc, This installed alongside Norton Antivirus. The other change I have noticed is that I now have a dial up connection which tries to connect onto my broadband every time I re-boot(This has a Google Gadjet icon in the Toolbar). This may not be connected to the problem, but it never happened before. I have run spybot,ad-aware,norton antivirus,Windows Livecare scanner,Bitdefender Online Scanner,Bitdefender Rootkit scanner and nothing shows. This is preventing me from running my daily scheduled scans for Windows Defender, Norton Antivirus, which run through the night. Any advice would be appreciated!

Try disabling everything in MSCONFIG except your AV and Firewall and reboot.Work with your system for the hour and see if this carries on.If the problem seems to have gone,go back to MSCONFIG and add one tick at a time and ok,go through the list of startup programs one by one to till you get what maybe a conflict somewhere...this may identify the problem.Start/Run/type MSCONFIG/select startupAlternatively try the system file checker sfc /scannow ( note the space / )Understanding sfc click here

Question: Computer Hangs

Hey all

Have been having problems lately with my 3 yr old custom built computer. 2.2 Ghz Dual Core Gigabyte G31-TM 2GB RAM computer

Sometimes, usually after I shut it down for the night and try to start it back up in the morning, the computer will hang at either the Windows 7 logo flag screen, or hang at the welcome screen, or sometimes hang at the desktop, and all of my icons do not come up.

I have scanned for malware, none. I have ran chkdsk, no bad sectors. I have blown it out with an air compressor (this is what caused it last time I had this problem, thought it would fix it again but aparently not).

Am wondering what else I can do? I have cheked the disk with PCDoctor, it checks out fine. Should I swap SATA cables or SATA ports?

Answer:Computer Hangs

Try doing a bootable hard drive diagnostic scan from the hard drives manufacture. Switching cables is also a good idea.

Answer:Computer Hangs a Lot

Do the following in that computer.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Download and save the TSG System Information Utility (SysInfo.exe) to the desktop.

After it's been downloaded and saved, double-click it to run it.

Information about your computer will appear.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE text here.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Click Start, then type MSCONFIG in the search or run box, then press the Enter key.

When the small "System Configuration" window appears, click the "Startup" tab.

Write down ONLY the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them.

If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list.

Make sure to spell them EXACTLY as you see them there.

Here is my situation.

I just put together a new computer (Quad Core QX6700, 2GB Corsair Dominator RAM, WD Raptor, eVGA 680i MB, eVGA 8800 GTX GPU).

I installed Windows XP Pro. Booted up for the first time and noticed that when I close a window Windows hangs up. I would say probably about 75% of the time my systems hangs for about 5 to 15 seconds when I close a window. The other 25% everything works fine.

The whole task bar at the bottom is frozen including the start button but I am able to click around on the desktop. When it "revives itself" it usually catches up with itself and makes the clicks that I tried to make when it was hung up.

If I had to guess I would think maybe it's Windows explorer, but i'm not sure what to try. I have already reinstalled Windows once and that didn't fix the problem...(unless it's a driver that I installed afterwards).

Any other thoughts on what it might be that is causing this?

Thanks in advance.

It deleted all my partition. So i used one recovery software to recover my files. I got few files with that software. Then i installed vista.

Every day atleast one time my computer started to hang. The screen gets a different color everytime (No message.. No words..). I thought it is problem of vista. I am now again back to windows xp. But i have the same problem.

If this is a recent problem try a system restore. System Restore

If that doesn't help try a repair install. Repair Install

Make sure that all your drivers are up to date and that you are using the official drivers, not the ones off of Windows Update.

I currently have a AMD xp 1700+, A-bit KG7 mobo, Gainward Geforce 2 pro, SoundBlaster Live sound Card and a 40gig Quantum Fireball HD home built computer. I can't even make the Num Lock light turn on or off and the redlight on the mouse doesn't even change when I move it. I have tried switching out components except cpu. cleaned the entire comp and made sure it wasn't over heating. Even ran Knoppix (cd-rom linux) to see if it might be my HD and still hangs. Any ideas?

Question: Computer Hangs Up

Help please!

This is my 3rd try at sending this question - thus the problem.

Some months ago, I connected my two home computers to access the Internet on both computers via sbcglobal. I used a Homeportal 1000 HW 2-Wire DSL bridge supplied by SBC. I used a D-Link AirPlus G-DWL-G120 Wireless USB adaptor for wireless hookup. Since then while surfing the Internet, the computer with the wireless adaptor hangs up; the mouse & keyboard stop working and I have to manually turn off the computer. The computer also stops working if the wireless adaptor is plugged in and I try to use the printer. When I unplug the wireless adaptor, computer runs all day without hanging up. The computer does not appear to be running hot; cooling fan works ok. Is it a wireless hardware problem or a USB port problem? I downloaded the latest update from D-Link's website but still the same problem.

There are no virus infections (I recently put on McAfee after Norton was disabled due to a virus; McAfee running on both computers - firewall always enabled; recent virus scan ok on both computers; no spyware or adware problems - manually and automatically cleaned).

Other hardware & system info:
HP Pavilion a500n computer system running Windows XP (Home) SP2
AMD Athlon XP 2800+
2.08 GHz; 448 RAM
Logitech Cordless Mouse (also plugged into a USB port)

Question: Computer Hangs Up

Hi,

I was just using my computer for a couple of minutes and it suddenly hanged up and became unresponsive. The CPU is running, but the system is hanged up/unresponsive. So I pressed the Restart button on the CPU. The CPU was on but the system won't boot (I can't hear a beep sound). I fixed some wirings at the back of the CPU and now I am able to boot. Can somebody explain what is/are the reason(s) that caused the sudden hang up and unresponsiveness of my computer?

Thank you.

Answer:Computer Hangs Up

What were you doing when it hung? Was it internet explorer or a browser that hung up?

When you have a hang, try Control Alt Delete and then wait to see if you can access Task manager. You'll want to take a look at what open Program is "Not Responding" on first tab, then click second tab for all users and see if any Processes are monopolizing the CPU at that moment.

If so, click the X out of the hanging window, or highlight it and End Task in Manager's first tab. If it offers to send a Report and restart, allow this so you can possibly get back diagnostics from MS which will come in under Problem Solutions in Action Center.

Until then you'll need to troubleshoot the hang yourself by checking the Event Viewer>Administrative View and also Performance-Diagnostics log for that timestamp. Also in Advanced Tools accessed by clicking WEI link at Computer>Properties, there may be problems cued at top, plus access to the logs and Generate a System Health Report.

Once you find any clues for what happened in the logs or as cued issues, Google error number and other identifiers plus some of the key text of the error/issue message to find results of others' attempts to fix same issue.

Repeat issues are the easiest to fix because they will show a pattern of errors in logs you can Google as they become increasingly annoying. Most all are solvable with today's Google results and the built-in tools and troubleshooters in Win7. At the worst you'd need to reinstall wh... Read more

I have Windows XP.
I shut my computer down, but it hung up at the desktop wall paper and did not go to the Windows shutting down... screen.
After a bit, the computer just shut down without going to that screen.
I was concerned and started the computer back up and it hung up for a while, but then continued as normal.
My malware scans didn't show anything bad, so I started up in safe mode to see if it did it there, too.
As it was showing all the drivers loading up, it hangs at mup.dll or mup.sys or something similar for a bit then continues on as normal.

This seems to be mostly a minor inconvenience right now, but I am concerned it might cause more problems.

Hi there,
the Laptop TP T40 seems to be ok now. It was infected by Phorpiex.B.56 and several Trojans. Avira removed it (log attached). Afterwards repaired network-settings and manually removed JRE (uninstall didn't work). Malwarebyte, Avast, OTL, and Gmer couldn't find anything else. To be sure I wanted to run combofix but DDS and combofix don't run through and PC hangs (only mouse-movement left). DTLite was removed, Avast deactivated and all 3rd-Party-Tasks killed. DDS stops with the # below the 't' of 'where it was' (in case this indicates anything).
Hope you cannot find anything since I have to return the Laptop by tomorrow. But maybe this is of any help for you.

I had installed Norton 360 last year and there was no problem what-so-ever. However, I have again installed Norton 360 internet security. I find, of late, that my computer hangs very often and is slow. Could it be due to installing Norton 360 internet security?

Answer:Computer hangs often

Yes, this is a normal result of having security software like an Norton.

When your antivirus performs a scan. It produces a log. This log can be up to 100 megabytes of information each. The registry holds all this info. The addition of the info is not the major problem. Its that the information is placed in many places in your registry. This causes fragmentation of files. Your computer's operating system must search through the massive files in the registry constantly. (it stresses the computer).

If the registry is error-filled, fragmented, or bloated with unnecessary and duplicate files, you will have major slowdown.

I suggest you uninstall norton and download Microsoft Security Essentials. Is free and better in my opinion. Spyware Protection | Free Spyware Protection | Microsoft Security Essentials

Question: Computer Hangs up

Have been dealing with computers for a long time, but have strange one that I have not been able to figure out. Have a laptop, running Win 7 Professional, that hangs up for a minute at a time, hard drive light on almost solid, and if you listen close you can actually hear the hard drive doing a repeated set of seeks sounding like xxxxxxxx xx xxxxxxx, pause for 2 secs then another xxxxxxxx xx xxxxxxxxx , etc.. may do this for up to a minute before it stops. Most of the time this happens is right after opening IE11 for the first time each use, but has happened during normal use of computer on occasion as well. Have been using the resource monitor accessory when this happens to see if I can tell if there is an app or process which is causing this, but nothing I see stands out as the culprit. any Ideas on what could be causing this?

Good Morning;

New PC running Vista Premium with Explorer 7 Hangs-up/freezes on a regular basis. Specifically going from url to url, page/site will begin to load, blue completion bar at the bottom of the page/toolbar begins to fill and the cursor (blue circluar) turns but page never completes loading. I can wait for hour and nothing happens. When I go to Task Mgr (Ctrl/Alt/Del) it indicates "...program not responding...". Eventually I'll close the program down thru Task Mgr and logon again to the Internet.

I've tried to isolate whether the problem is Explorer 7 or Vista itself as both according to most search engine inquiries are vulnerable to this problem. I have used sfc /scannow to verify Vista files are NOT corrupt and a literal laundry list of alleged fixes for Explorer 7 including doing a "RESET" but the thing persists on hanging- (BTW, ran 4 different virus/malware scans and all came-up clean, so the problem doesn't appear to be virus/security related)-

Does anyone have a remedy as it appears to be a major characteristic with both Vista and Explorer 7 with a lot of fixes- I just haven't been able to find one that works!

Many thanks in advance-
Webz

My X60 laptop suddenly started getting hung up at the "checking embedded security chip" screen (I believe it was after the last time I chose "install updates" option). I checked the messages in the forum and realized many people had the same problem. Someone said that a way to solve the problem would be to remove the Client Security Solutions program. By a stroke of luck I was able to pass the hung-up screen and then was able to remove the CSS program. Problem is, now the computer gets hung up at the "loading your windows settings" screen. I tried re-booting several times and always get stuck at the same point. Any tips? Please help - my computer is not usable at this point. Thanks Tito

Greetings Everyone!

I recently put together a nice little new system. However, I'm finding that something is causing it to freeze every 5 minutes or so and it's driving me crazy!
System:
Win XP Pro
AMD 3500+
nForce 4 DFI Ultra
1gig pc3200 corsair stick
ATI x800 pro
2 Seagate SataII 80gigs in RAID 0 configuration
Thermaltake 420W PSU

I tried updating the drivers for the motherboard (audio too), and the video card. The system should have enough power for everything (i think). Nothing appears to be over heating when it suddenly freezes, and none of the fans stop moving.

Running completely update Windows XP

Any help is appriciated! Thanks!

That's right. When I right click anything in my computer (any file, files), or try to copy or move a file(s), my computer hangs. It seems like it's trying to execute the command but cannot, and just sits there.
I can however right click when I'm on the internet (links, pictures etc.) That works fine. Just my own files don't work.

Running xp sp2; athlon xp 1.33; abit kt7.

Reboot did not fix, same problem in safe mode. PCcillin came up empty.

No updates since problem started.

This sucks. Would love some feedback, Thanks

Answer:Computer hangs during booting

Actally take the connections off - then put them back on again. When you put in the PCI card - did you unplug or otherwise disconnect the system from mains power - if you don't there is always power on the motherboard in ATX type systems.

I cannot reboot my computer normally throught the Start -> Turn Off Computer -> Restart option. It causes my computer to shut down normally, but upon doing so it doesn't boot back up. However, the fans and mobo are still on inside my case, I'm simply left with nothing showing up on the monitor. I have to either force reboot it or power down, both of which work normally. Normal shutdown also works without problems - it's just restart that won't work.

I've already defragged my HDD and made sure my CPU is stable - so I don't think those two are causing the problems either.

The problem first came to my attention earlier today when I was prompted to restart after installing some new graphics drivers. However, I don't think they were the problem as I've already uninstalled them and reverted back to my old ones, but the problem still remains. I've been using this rig for almost a year now with nothing like this happening.

Any help regarding the problem is appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Answer:Computer Hangs on Reboot

I'd try booting in safemode and if that works try doing a system restore to a time before you installed the new graphics drivers

Hello, I am hoping we can see the ESET log.he ESET Online Scanner saves a log file after running, which can be examined or sent in to ESET for further analysis. The path to the log file is "C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt". You can view this file by navigating to the directory and double-clicking it in Windows Explorer, or by copying and pasting the path specification above (including the quotation marks) into the Start ? Run dialog box from the Start Menu on the desktop. Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.5.0.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version 2.3.2.2 of the tool.Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.

Ok this is a really weird problem (hope I have it in the right area). I've had it for a long time, but never looked around for a fix since its easy to work around. My computer hangs shortly after identifying all of my hardware during a reboot/reset... but during a normal boot up everything loads perfectly fine.

I believe it happens at the point between when BIOS has finished loading all my hardware and right before it would normally go to the XP splash screen. Please let me know if there are any files that would help diagnose the issue or if you have heard of anything similar before. Thank you!

My computer randomly hangs up every so often. What I mean by "hangs up" is that I can't access Windows live, internet explorer, and most programs I try to start I get the "There is not enough memory or disk space to run" message. I can't access task manager when it freezes on me either. I can shut it down, but it takes about 5 minutes before it will shut down. I'm running Microsoft Security Essentials and a free version of IObit 360 Security. Only the 360 will run when the system gets hung, Security essentials disappears and won't run when I try to start it. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

This is an extension of a long-running intermittent problem. At irregular intervals of days weeks or months, my computer will fail to start windows at power up, hanging at that point in the boot cycle where it would decide which device to boot from.

Cutting right to the chase, if I use Minitool Partition Wizard to boot from and then select "Boot from Hard drive" (instead of into PW), Windows will start normally. Currently, if I try to start directly it hangs indefinitely.

Does this point to a motherboard / CMOS issue rather than a hard drive boot sector malfunction? I've been running this system for 4 or 5 years and nothing is overclocked - the m/b is reset to its stable defaults.

Answer:Computer hangs on boot.

OK - clarifying. They system is hanging at "verifying DMI pool". I've read lots of treads here and elsewhere about it, and have tried to repair it using the BOOTREC commands as detailed here
System will not boot to Windows 7 Professional [Solved] - Windows 7 - Windows 7
and here
How To Rebuild the BCD in Windows

bootrec /fixmbr completed successfully but
bootrec /scanos found 0 windows installations.

bcedit /export c:\bcdbackup failed - "The requested system device cannot be found."

I'm guessing this means it can't find a C drive?

What now?

Answer:Computer hangs and freezes

Well first I don't know why your running a Server based OS on your desktop. Next thing you have tons of problems. The system cant connect to your IDE Devices at all, your task manager cant be accessed properly, your kernel cant be accessed, your security is erroring out, and the list goes on. There is no way that we can assist you in fixing all of these issues. Seriously.

To start you would need to rip open the PC and check your IDE cables. You would have to check your BIOS and make sure that it can access the IDE drives.

From there you would need to do sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt just to see if it could even attempt to fix the issues with the kernel and security. If not then your stuck doing a reinstall as there is no way to repair install a Server OS.

So I would start with that as it will take far less time to reinstall than to try and tackle the issues one by one. I would also highly suggest you don't use a Server Based OS as your main OS. It is not made for that purpose.

Good morning. Over the past few weeks, my HP Pavilion p6710f computer started hanging during shut down which required me to hold the power button to shut down.  At that time, I was having no other issues.  Yesterday morning, I tried printing a document but it wouldn't print, so I tried shutting down and it hung again during the shut down process.  When I restarted, the document printed immediately on start up, but then my computer hung while programs were loading.  I could move the cursor, but couldn't click any icons.  When moving the cursor over the taskbar, it just spins.  Ctrl-Alt-Del wouldn't allow me to access task manager.   So...I restarted in Safe Mode w/ Networking and ran Avast and MBAM.  No viruses and no malware.  I also tried System Restore, but get an error stating that my antivirus software might be preventing the restore.  I disabled Avast and tried again and received the same results.  Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Gateway desktop w/winXP. Have never had any probs until now. When turned on, the Windows logo w/black background comes up, then it goes to the black screen w/white writing that wants to know how I want to start windows. Ex.  "safe mode", "start windows normally". But the computer hangs. It says to scroll up or down w/arrow keys, but nothing works.I tried a search but nothing. My son uses this for homework, I need help and I'm not real good with the mechanics of computers. Any help would be greatly apprieciated.

Answer:Computer Hangs Randomly?!

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer. 1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line. *************************************************************************P2P - I see you have P2P software installed on your machine. uTorrentWe are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as ... I think I have something making my computer hang badly. it is random and does not seem to be tied to any particular program. I have rolled back the system restore as far as I can and uninstalled all recent programs.

About 2 years ago I began having trouble shutting down my computer after a Windows update, this started immediately after an update and seems to always hang at 30% requiring a hard shutdown. It wasn't too much of a hassle until recently when it began to be difficult to reboot.

Thanks in advance for any help!
John

Ok, I bought and built a new desktop. I have a 2002 copy of Windows XP Professional that I am trying to install and it hangs almost right away before the windows install screen starts and I get an error message related to file pci.sys.

I'm not sure what the problem is, but my best guess is that I need a newer version of the windows xp install disc that has one of the service packs installed on it. Maybe the computer can't handle the new PCIe or something, not sure.

Before I buy a newer OS, does anyone have an idea of what is going on? I am getting stop code 0x0000007E. I'm not sure what it means, even after looking it up on the microsoft web page.

Answer:New computer old OS, hangs on install

sounds like a bad disk / having problems copying the files.

could try copying i386 to the drive and run winnt32.exe

Hi, I have an HP Probook 4520 and I am not sure if it has a virus? It starts up fine and then if I right click on anything, it just hangs. For example, I right clicked on a doc on the desktop and the loading circle just keeps spinning. I cannot click on anything else. If I open a folder and right click on a document in there, it does the same but then I cannot minimise/close the folder or if I click on it through the taskbar, it just doesn't open. It gradually gets worse as at first it is just the desktop but yesterday when I couldn't access my folder/files from the task bar I went via the start menu, that worked the first time but then when I did it later I got some kind of error message 'system call failed".

Right click works fine when on internet, internet is running fine.

I ran malware bytes, anti malware removal tool and it scanned and found over 400 items. I removed all of them, restarted the laptop but it is still doing the same!!

Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks
Becki
