Question: windows-patch.info

Does anybody else get occasional pop-ups warning about some apparant problem in Windows? It says to visit windows-patch.info. I find it pretty unlikely that a real patch would be found on this site rather than Microsoft's site, and I don't trust this site at all, unless anyone has had prior experience dealing with it. Mainly, I just want the stupid message to go away.

So. Anybody actually downloaded one if these things from windows-patch.info?

Preferred Solution: windows-patch.info

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: windows-patch.info

MS doesn't send patches via pop-ups. Likely it's either advertising or something worse.

You might try a good spyware removal tool, and a pop-up stopper. Many are free.

Microsoft Releases Mysterious Windows 10 Patch KB4033637, Refuses to Share Info

Microsoft has silently published Windows 10 update KB4033637 for computers running the Anniversary Update (version 1607), but contrary to the company?s typical approach when rolling out new patches, it hasn?t included a knowledge base article to explain what the new release actually does.

And what?s worse is that a company employee has made the whole thing even more uncanny after offering a totally unexpected answer when someone asked about the purpose and the contents of the update.

?May we know why you?re asking?? Microsoft?s Michelle Vil replied to a user who turned to the Microsoft Community forums in search for more information on update KB4033637.

While it shouldn?t be a surprise for the company?s staff that network and system administrators in charge of hundreds or thousands of machines aren?t willing to install updates on Windows 10 devices unless they know exactly what they do, Microsoft is yet to provide any information on the mysterious update, despite the first inquires for a change log were posted online on July 24.

Flash Player security update?
For some reason, the update is still being offered to Windows 10 systems and wasn?t included in the monthly Patch Tuesday cycle that took place on August 8.

Reddit user /u/PwnySlaystation01 got in touch with Microsoft support staff and after pressing for an answer, more information has finally been provided.

Microsoft has reissued a patch for Windows after an earlier version led to some machines crashing and suffering the 'blue screen of death'.

The first patch, security update 2823324, which fixed flaws in the NTFS kernel-mode driver of Windows, was pulled earlier this month after some users reported getting a "STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}" error message after installation.

A new version of the patch was made available by Microsoft yesterday.

Windows users with automatic updating enabled will receive the new patch, while those with it disabled will need to install the fix manually.

Microsoft recommends that customers uninstall the earlier security update 2823324 that triggered the initial error message. Instructions for how to uninstall the update and recover affected machines are available here.

The patch fixes three privately disclosed and one publicly disclosed flaw in an NTFS kernel-mode driver that could allow a user to elevate their privilege level. An attacker would need valid logon credentials and be able to log on locally to "exploit the most severe vulnerabilities", according to Microsoft.

Not sure if anyone else is seeing this. My rescue and recovery no longer launches. I've installed Vista Service Pack 1 on my X61 tablet, so I figured this patch might fix it: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-69235 However, during installation of this patch, I get an error message "patch install error. Unauthorized Patch For Microsoft WMF Bug Sparks Controversy

Sober worm may hit tomorrow, but businesses are more concerned about the WFM vulnerability and Microsoft's inability to produce a patch this week. Some are choosing an alternative that could lead to other problems.

By Larry Greenemeier
InformationWeek

Jan 4, 2006 01:00 PM

Concerns over the lack of a Microsoft-issued patch have pushed the Windows Metafile/Zero-Day bug to top of mind, surpassing even tomorrow's much-anticipated Sober worm attack.

The lag time between the Dec. 27 discovery of the WMF vulnerability and Microsoft's planned Jan. 10 patch availability has forced IT security departments to find alternative means for protecting their systems and prompted a non-Microsoft developer to create a patch that others could use.

All of this serves to damage Microsoft's reputation as a company that can secure its own products—a reputation that only recently was beginning to improve after years of being dragged through the mud. Experts are divided over whether it's wise to use Ilfak Guilfanov's Hexblog patch to fix the WMF vulnerability, which could allow attackers to use WMF images to execute malicious code on their victims' computers. Some say it's a necessary measure to protect systems until the official Microsoft patch arrives; others say it's not worth the extra work to patch twice or to take the risk of using a third-party fix.

t's Patch Tuesday this week - the last one, indeed, for 2013, the year in which we celebrated the tenth anniversary of Microsoft's formularised process for security updates.

So here's our news-in-brief, as usual, to give you a quick summary of what to look forward to on Tuesday.

You'll be facing a pretty regular-sized effort, with eleven bulletins, five of them critical and six of them closing potential remote code execution (RCE) holes.

The non-critical RCE bug is rated important, which is a level usually used by Microsoft for compromises that provoke some sort of warning or prompt, even if it's not a very helpful warning (in other words, where there is some visual signal to look out for).

But important is also used for some vulnerabilities that result from "sequences of user actions that do not generate prompts or warnings," though you and I would probably just say, "drive-by install" or, for that matter, "RCE."

[......]

Talking of EoPs, you will no doubt have read Microsoft's announcement, at the end of November, of CVE-2013-5065, a kernel-based privilege escalation bug in the driver NDPROXY.SYS on Windows XP.

The CVE-2013-5065 vulnerability is known to have been exploited in the wild.

What we don't know yet is whether the December 2013 Patch Tuesday fixes that one or not.

It seems probable, given that Bulletin 8 is listed as an EoP in Windows, with updates available only for XP and Ser... Read more

OK, on Thursday I got infected with the Win32/Patched.FM and Win32/Patched.FL virus which has affected winlogon.exe and explorer.exe (kind of important files).
The AVG resident shield picked it up but was unable to do anything about it and it was popping up all kinds of rubbish messages and websites.

I had to hard power off my machine initially and went into safe mode to try and get past the initial problems via my AVG free 9.0 safe mode scan, then used my other computer to get onto this forum and check out the process to take in tackling it. The result is that I set it up for normal boot mode, and went through the full process as described for my computer (Windows XP Professional 32-bit). The only bit that appeared to fail entirely was the Root Repeal which didn't load even though I did disable virus checker and firewall beforehand. Logs are attached. The problem seems to be 'contained' now but I'm still infected through winlogon.exe and explorer.exe and now I've enabled the AVG resident shield again after the diagnostics it's flagging those two files every few seconds. Any help on sorting it out gratefully received.

Thanks.

Download and save this XPsp3bu.exe to your C:\ root folder. You must do this properly. Now run the XPsp2bu.exe program by double clicking on it. You may or may not notice a quick flash of a black window. This is normal. The program runs quickly and just extracts some files we need.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

The last set of patches included one for patching IE10, although our PC's have not taken this step yet. Should I still install this patch?

Answer:Patch Tuesday included a patch for IE10. Why?

If you haven't got IE 10 you won't need the patch for it. I have found on W7 some of the items I'm 'offered' don't apply to my home pc setup.
Anyway I figure if I ever do need them in the future, I can go to Windows Update and do it manually.

Microsoft Re-Issues Windows 7 Patch Preparing Windows 10 Upgrade

Microsoft has re-published a Windows 7 and 8.1 update that in the past has been associated with the company?s aggressive Windows 10 push, this time trying to focus on providing users with a smooth transition to the new operating system.

KB3150513 is an update shipped to systems running Windows 7, 8.1, and Windows 10 versions prior to 1703, and its purpose is to prepare the computer for the upgrade to Windows 10.

On April 21, Microsoft rolled out the 10th revision to the update, so users who are yet to upgrade to Windows 10 are once again being re-offered the patch.

Smooth upgrade to Windows 10 Creators Update
With the Windows 10 Creators Update now available for download, it more or less makes sense for Microsoft to provide a new compatibility patch to users, especially because a smooth upgrade is needed for those making the move from Windows 7 and 8.1, but also from Windows 10 TH1 or the Anniversary Update.

?This update provides the latest set of definitions for compatibility diagnostics that are performed on the system. The updated definitions will help enable Microsoft and its partners to ensure compatibility for all customers who want to install the latest Windows operating system,? Microsoft explains in the KB page.

?Installing this update also makes sure that the latest Windows operating system version is correctly offered through Windows Update, based on compatibility results.?

Hello, so i installed the 32 bit windows ultimate by accident which limits me to the 4 GB ram, bearing in mind i have 8 GB. As i already had my preferences and programs installed, i did not have the time to do a fresh install. So i downloaded and ran a 'patch' which changes the kernel settings? Could someone please tell me if this would be safe, or would i be expecting memory dumps in the near future? Thanks.

Answer:Windows 7 ultimate 32 bit, RAM patch.

I do not know what you downloaded and installed, but you can't patch 32 bit windows to access more than 4GB memory. You need to reinstall the 64 bit version of the OS to to be able to access more than 4GB of RAM. I would expect whatever it is you installed is not safe.

Hi, I want to know how do you plan for windows update patch activity. Currently, I do patch on All Servers once after 7 days of Microsoft releases and tested on testing servers. I do not like that way. It is hard for me to control and check all the servers.
In this November patch, I face the blue screen in both Windows 2008 and 2012 which have SQL database. In future, i plan to do (n-1) and also I will categorize servers which is critical and needed. If not, i will leave these servers and plan to do patch in
the last week of that month. Is it the good way or Please suggest the best way.
Thanks and Best Rgds,
M2HEIN.

Hiya

Trust relationships are created between Windows NT or Windows 2000
domains to allow users in one domain to access resources in other
domains without requiring them to authenticate separately to each
domain. When a user in a trusted domain requests access to a resource
in a trusting domain, the trusted domain supplies authorization data
in the form of a list of Security Identifiers (SIDs) that indicate
the user's identity and group memberships. The trusting domain uses
this data to determine whether to grant the user's request.

A vulnerability exists because the trusting domain does not verify
that the trusted domain is actually authoritative for all the SIDs in
the authorization data. If one of the SIDs in the list identified a
user or security group that is not in the trusted domain, the
trusting domain would accept the information and use it for
subsequent access control decisions. If an attacker inserted SIDs of
his choice into the authorization data at the trusted domain, he
could elevate his privileges to those associated with any desired
user or group, including the Domain Administrators group for the
trusting domain. This would enable the attacker to gain full Domain
Administrator access on computers in the trusting domain.

Just in case anyone else had issues with the patches today, after installing the patches, it couldn't load drivers for my USB drives (and I believe one SSD had issues too, though it worked, unlike the USB thumb drives).

I don't have time to trouble shoot it (too busy right now), but doing a system restore fixes it...I may try reinstalling the patches and see if it's repeatable.
I didn't see anything in google earlier today, so it may just be me, but be aware when you patch.
I think this is the first time I've had an issue with recommended patches. I've had issues with optional patches in the past.

We are currently using Dell Kace for this and am not inpressed. We are already using Kaspersky for our AV and know that they do have this ability available as an add on.

Does anybody have any experience with Kaspersky for patch installing on servers and workstations, and if you felt it worked well or not. Thanks in advance.

Answer:How is Kaspersky for Windows Patch Management?

Kaspersky works well for all applications, except for one drawback. If the Auto scan is set, some data that the tool thinks is infected will be erased. So, other than this Kaspersky is awesome. Moreover, I believe this issue is with all AV tools.

I had used Kaspersky on my server too, so just go ahead.

PAE patching does not work on all systems, due to hardware or software limitations/restrictions.

Patch for "Critical" bug fix on Patch Tuesday
"After being forced to rush out an emergency patch for its Internet Explorer browser last month, Microsoft plans to release just one security update in its first patch release of 2009. The update will be a critical fix for server and desktop versions of Windows, Microsoft said Thursday. It fixes at least one bug that could allow attackers to install unauthorized software on a victim's computer.
Microsoft did not say which bugs it would be fixing with next week's updates, but the company has several to choose from.
In the past month, Microsoft has warned of flaws in its WordPad Text Converter and SQL Server database software.
The researcher who disclosed the SQL Server flaw said recently that Microsoft has known about the issue since April, and had written a patch for it back in September.
One security researcher has also claimed that there is a bug in Microsoft's Windows Media Player, but Microsoft has disputed his findings.
But none of these flaws is in all versions of the underlying Windows operating system, which are being patched next week. According to nCircle Director of Security Operations Andrew Storms, Microsoft could be fixing a known Windows flaw that would allow hackers to gain unauthorized privileges on a computer. "An exploit has already been published for some time along with a whitepaper by the author," Storms said in an instant-message interview.
Microsoft has offered work-arounds ... Read more

Microsoft to release bumper Windows patch

A bumper crop of Microsoft patches will be released next week, including nine fixes for Windows flaws.

At least one of the updates for the Windows operating system is rated "critical", its highest rating, Microsoft said on Thursday in a posting to its TechNet site. The forewarning is part of the company's programme to give regular computer users notice of monthly security bulletins before the patches themselves are released.

There will be 13 updates in total, Microsoft said. That includes a critical flaw affecting Office and Visual Studio, and another critical flaw involving Windows, Windows Media Player and MSN Messenger. Also on the way are a patch for an "important" vulnerability in .Net Framework and a fix for "moderate" problems with SharePoint Services and Office.

So we are about to switch from Centos/Apache to Win2008/IIS and I am a bit troubled by the prospect of patching it.

Under Centos it was easy; I would clone the VM, patch the OS while the server is running, restart services or reboot the machine. If services had to be restarted the downtime would be seconds at the most. If it had to reboot it would be back in seconds, certainly under a minute. That's acceptable downtime for what we do.

With Windows OS patching I am looking at frequent reboots and when it reboots it takes forever to come back up. I just timed the Patch Tuesday updates on the test machine and it took 4 minutes and 57 seconds from when restart was initiated till IIS started serving pages again. That was just a small update from the looks of it.

How do you patch Windows web servers to avoid this downtime?

Answer:how do you patch a Windows/IIS production webserver?

Is it possible to make 2 instances of the server & make it load balanced? This would help with patching & reduce downtime a lot.

Frankly, I'm confused.

A February 11th blog posting at The Microsoft Security Response Center regarding problems with a patch issued last week said "We also stopped offering this update through Windows Update as soon as we discovered the restart issues."

This posting has not been updated in the six days since it was written.

The patch in question is known as MS10-015 and as KB977165, depending on the context.

Yesterday at Computerworld.com Gregg Keizer also reported that MS10-015 was no longer being issued. He quoted an email message from Jerry Bryant of Microsoft: "Automatic Updates for MS10-015 will remain disabled until our investigation into the restart issues is complete"

Has the problematic Windows patch been pulled or not? - Computerworld Blogs

Answer:Has the problematic Windows patch been pulled or not?

What I read today is that MS has "confirmed" that the problem is due entirely to a specific malware infection present on the affected PCs. Thus, their recommendation was to disinfect the PC before applying this KB.

Given their current position on this, it's unlikely that they will be pulling this "patch".

Came across this today, thought it might be helpfull!!
" If you have a Compaq or HP desktop system and have used Windows Update to odtain WinXP SP1, you have probably seen a special update for your system. The update is actually a help file that directs you to the Compaq-HP site to obtain a patch. The patch is small , but vital that you implement it. If you do not install the patch, the next time you use WinXP System Recovery utility, you could lose all data stored on the hard drive. Follow the directions provided with the Windows Update , print out the patch instructions you encounter along the way, and have a floppy ready and you should be able to download and install the update within 15 minutes"

Hiya

Microsoft has released a patch that eliminates a security vulnerability in Visual Studio RAD (Remote Application Deployment) Support, an optional sub-component of FrontPage Server Extensions. This sub-component contains an unchecked buffer in a section that processes input information. By establishing a web session on with the server and passing a specially malformed packet to the server component, an attacker could cause code of his choice to run on the server.

To do so, follow these steps: Start the Administrative Tools utility in Control Panel.Double-click Services.Right-click Cryptographic Services, and then click Properties.Click Automatic for Startup type, and then click Start.Install Windows XP SP1 again. If the problem persists, go to Step 6.Click Start, and then click Run.In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.At the command prompt, type the following commands, and then press ENTER after each line:net stop cryptsvc

The 4 GB RAM limit in client versions of Windows is a license limit and enforced by the kernel. Any method of circumventing this would be in violation of Microsoft's EULA and I will would not consider helping with this even if I had a solution, which I don't.

For reasons which I will not go into a successful patch of Windows 10 would be more difficult and less likely with Windows 10 than for previous versions.

I would recommend using a 64 bit version of Windows 10 if you want more than 4 GB RAM.

One of the reasons why Microsoft disabled the ability to access RAM above 4 GB is that some drivers behave very badly in such an environment. The results are unpredictable but unpleasant. As the problem does not occur in unmodified versions of Windows developers have little reason to fix this.

A Windows Update patch just failed on a friend's Win7 SP1 system. I'm trying to help out.

This patch Tuesday, they had 10 important security updates. On their system, 9 of the 10 installed fine, but 1 of them failed during installation. It is listed as "Failed" in the list of updates.

Clearing the IE cache, rebooting, and checking for new updates does not show the update in the list of available updates within Windows Update.

Now what should I tell them to do?

Answer:Windows Update patch failed

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Please also post the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file

I bought the $40 Windows 8 upgrade when they first began offering it a while ago. I haven't activated it yet so I'm assuming I can still use it (no expiration or anything like that right?). I was wondering if I could upgrade directly to Windows 8.1 though (I'm a little confused by some of the information here). From what I understand I want Windows 8.1 Update. Will I need to pay more if I'm upgrading from Windows 7 > Windows 8 > Windows 8.1 Update? Just very confused at this point and looking to understand what's what before I go installing stuff Thank you for any help.

Answer:Can the $40 Windows 8 upgrade patch straight to 8.1?

You should be able to without any extra costs.

I upgraded 8 OEM to 8 Pro with the $40 Propack & then to 8.1 Pro through the Store free.

I have been getting a land attack ( kapersky firewall noticed it ) when I open a bit torrent port for azureus.

I am running windows xp sp2 ( the default windows installed from disk I think, I didn't find the sp2 pack
install/uninstall in windows updates on remove software from the run, appwiz.cpl box

I am able to keep out the attack by closing the port in port settings, but I cannot run the full program.

The only patch I found at microsoft.com was for windows 95.

Were can I find a current patch for this newly remodeled attack?

This is very important, this WMF hole is very very nasty. There's now an unofficial patch out. It should be use in conjunction with unregistering the DLL in question. It's all in the FAQ.

I don't normally post about the latest holes, but this is just so very very bad. People need to patch up ASAP. We have IM worms exploiting this, we have trusted sites getting hacked just to inject the exploit into visiting browsers... don't assume you've got it under control, make sure.

Answer:WMF patch -- Windows users need to act immediately!

Greetings:

I have 2 unusual file folders at the root of my C:\ drive. The names of both are alphanumeric gibberish, like:

af216ca03f1720edf1e7a15b650cbd63

One of the items contained therein is identified as a "Windows Installer Patch". There are numerous subfolders labeled "1042" , "1043", et. seq. Both folders are locked and i can't access any of the content even with Administrator's priveleges. These certainly look like leftovers of some kind that should be discarded. Should i discard them, and if so how to do it given the access problem?

Thanks!

Tim

Answer:Windows Installer Patch removal?

90% of the time those folders are from dling updates. the other 20% of the time those are system restore folders. If you try and delete and that fails that means it could be for system restore.

I installed Windows XP SP1 and Outlook Express now deletes any attachments it doesn't like, same as Outlook does. I think there is a patch for Outlook but I can't find one for Outlook Express, maybe because ir just started this foolishness.

Anyone know of a patch or a work around? If I can't find one, I can always remove SP1.

Thanks.
