Preferred Solution: Desktop Problem

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So, my brother is trading me his iTouch for my Zune, so I have to go install iTunes...which I hate...alot. It takes me a day to figure out how to get it installed (thanks to google, I managed to figure out I had to search and delete everything having to do with quicktime) But doing this would appear to have caused another problem...the Active Desktop Recovery and script error. I googled that again (Google is my life saver) and found the standard fix and did it. I unhid all folders and looked for desktop.htt in its supposed location and it wasn't there. I also use Google Chrome instead of IE8 if that means anything.

Answer:Active Desktop Recovery (desktop.htt not the problem)

Hello guys,

For some reason my computer have some problem(s) that I don't know where it come from and how to solve it.
I got this problem for 3 days and I have tried to fix it but to no avail and i have pretty much lost hope, because I have some important documents for school etc. and videos, pictures that i dont want to lose it and I have a presentation over 3 weeks.....and I am regretting not having made a backup..>.<

Here are the issues:

When I try to log in on my computer I get a message that says:
"The group policy client service failed the logon, Access denied."
Then it log off and returned to the profile selection screen.

After that I tried to log in via "Safe mode" and it work without getting the message:

But here comes my next problem. (Those problems is only on safe mode since I cant log in normally):

When I log in via Safe mode, my desktop icons are gone and my background is black. Also some of my programs in my startmenu are gone.

On my "computer" (windows+E or via the startmenu) some folders on the left panel are gone. When i right click and click on " show all folders" nothing happen.

See screenshot/link: ( I hope the screenshot is big enough...)

Things that I tried:

Have nearly completed a rebuild using an Asus M2N32-slideluxe mb (been unused for about 6 months and undamaged during that time i believe?) with an AMD2 5600cpu. Fired up for first time after getting new power supply OCX 500watt Corestream and using 4gbs ddr2 corsair mem and also have 3 case/chassis fans attached.Problem is when turned on for the first time to hopefully load on windows the mb ignition light is on, the fans run, but the cpu just gets warm without its fan turning apart from an tiny twitch of a movement and i quickly turned off within 5 seconds or so. Is this likely to be a problem with flashing the mb's memory? or not enough power from supply? Any ideas gratefully received.

Answer:Desktop Rebuild CPU Startup Problem Problem

Also forgot to mention cpu and mb have been left installed together as used in previous computer and currently I have attached an NVidia GTX460 card which is spinning ok as is the single 250gb hdd. When I mentioned about clearing MB memory in previous post i meant clearing the RTC ram which I had read about in the mb handbook? thanks

Question: Desktop Problem

Ok, this is a peculiar problem that I've never came across before, but here it goes.

It started after I installed "System Mechanic 5," at the end of the installation I chose for it to make a shortcut on the desktop. But oddly enough, it created 3 of them. So I tried deleting the icons and I could only of deleted one! So I kept on trying to delete the other three and I got this error:

So I left the icons there only waiting for something to happen, and sure enough, they eventually dissappeared. Now just a few minutes ago I installed the new Firefox (1.0.5). And again, I got three desktop shortcuts. I tried to delete them but only one went away and I got the same error when trying to delete the other two. But they eventually went away after a few minutes of activity.

Now only a few minutes ago my sister was on the computer and telling me she was getting this error. The same error I was getting, only she was getting it when trying to create a shortcut for her MSN Messenger.

So please, whats the problem and how can I fix this.

Answer:Desktop Problem

Have you tried rebooting?

I had the exact same problem when I updated Firefox one time. I think it was when I went from .9 to 1.0. The icon disappeared and all was right in the world again. The problem didn't come back.

Question: Desktop Problem

I just noticed my desktop looks quite distorted one day. Any wallpaper I try to use looks messed up. And also, the icons have this blue-like stroke around them and it just looks really ugly. here's what I mean

http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/2237/helpyozc9.jpg

does anyone know ow to fix this???

Answer:Desktop Problem

Hi mark12 !

By distorted, you mean the proportions seem to be modified ? It can come from stretching a 4/3 image to a non 4/3 desktop. Go to the display properties (right-click an unused part of the desktop and click properties) in the settings tab and tell us what's your current resolution. Change for a 4/3 ratio resolution (like 1024 x 768). You can also look at the problem the other way and choose to center your desktop image instead of stretching it. Go to the desktop tab in the display properties and you'll see that option in the scrollbox on the right.

About the blue box around your icons names, right-click my computer => properties => advanced and click settings under performances. Check that "use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" is checked. If that doesn't solve also the blue shade behind the icons, check whether there's no other option that's unticked there.

They are temporary AOL things – safe to just delete them. Hold the Ctrl key while you select a bunch of them. Right click on one and select delete. All of the ones you highlighted should go away.

RUNDLL.. There was a problem starting C\users\John\Appdata\Local\Conduit\BackgroundContainer\BackgroundContainer.dll..The specified module could not be found.
I would appreciate any help with this that I can get.. Regards jonni2341

Answer:DLL problem after going to desktop

Please download AdwCleaner and run it.

An image like the one below will open, click on Scan.

Once the search is complete a list of the pending items will be displayed.  If you see any which you do not want removed, remove the check mark next to it.

Click on Clean to remove the selected items.

You will receive a message telling you that all programs will be close so that the infections can be removed.  Click on Ok.

When cleaning process is complete a log of what was removed will be presented.  Please copy and the paste this log in your next post.

Please download Junkware Removal Tool.

Open your browser and go to Downloads, then click on the Junkware Removal Tool to install it.

Click on Run to initiate the installation.

To avoid potential conflicts, temporarily disable your antivirus and firewall.  You will want to be offline when you do this.

Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select Run as Administrator.

The tool will open and start scanning your system.

Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.

On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.  Copy and this and then post this in your topic.

Question: Desktop Problem!!

Okay, I have a problem with my desktop. The icons and everything seems like they are much too large for the screen...they basically do not fit. In addition, the color does not work....it seems all inverted. So, in order to fix this problem, I went to 'control panel', then 'settings' and changes the pixel area to smaller, and the color to 16-bit and/or 256 color. Upon pressing 'OK', I recieved a message informing me that in order for these changes to take effect, I had to restar the computer, so I did so; however, when i restared, NOTHING happened. The computer returned to 16 color mode and large desktop mode, without changing. So, I went to settings again and changed verything again and clicked 'APPLY' and I recieved the same information (restart the computer to change changes..) So, I did, and agin nothing happened. This problem is a major nusiance and I am unable to view a full screen of anything. Please give me the answer ASAP! Maybe there is a problem in my computer, because when I start the computer up, it says RUNDLL.exe has closed.

Question: Desktop Problem :/

EDIT: I found out my problem, I was in quiet office mode >=|

ADVICE: If anyone is having the same problem, the first thing you should do is check the mode you are in. Trust me it will save a lot of stress and trouble ha.

Hi, I been having this problem with my Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit. Basically it has been happening over the past 2-3 days. What the problem is that when I start up my laptop it boots up and loads everything on start-up then about 10 - 15 seconds after my desktop icons disappear. I have googled the problem and read some solutions but none have worked.

I have tried to go into regedit and make sure the shell was set to explorer.exe, ran scans with Webroot Anti-virus with Anti-spyware, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, also SuperAnti-Spyware. I ran these both in regular Windows start up and in safe mode.

Also when I go to processes I will end the explorer process and then create a new task "explorer.exe" it appears with the desktop than again 10 - 15 seconds it disappears. My computer is new only about two weeks old now.

Model: Asus Notebook G60Vx Series
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 @ 2.00 GHz
RAM: 4 GB
System Type: 64 Bit

Service Pack 1

That is about it, if you need more information about it just ask.

So please could you help me, thank you.

Anybody any ideas to what is causing the following control box to appear on screen, this is happening on my cousins PC, I've asked him to run AV and spyware removers but it could just be a setting somewhere in XP that's causing this to happen. Never seen this before so I'm at a loss.

Hi Stidyup,

I'm not sure... Are those links clickable? Do they work? If not, it probably is a corrupt wallpaper.

From the chewing gum colors and playdo-look I gather this is XP. Is Active Desktop on?

Question: Desktop problem

Recently, when I come out of a game, or off the internet and click on another icon to do something else, my computer will not respond. If I wait for a few minutes, then the appropriate window will open. If I become impatient and click on the icon a hundred times, then after the long pause, 100 windows will open. This does not happen all the time, just once in a while. When I open the task manager during this pause, it shows no applications running.
Any ideas on what could be causing this?
I have a dual channel motherboard with 2 1 gig memory sticks in it. I recently installed 2 more for a total of 4 gig of memory. I recently learned that a 32 bit system can only use up to 3 gig. So perhaps this could be causing it? I also started using AVG antivirus.

Answer:Desktop problem

Check what processes are running when it does this. You may have one or two that are still running after you quit the game or whatever and they may be hogging your memory. Programs may not be running, but processes still do.

On a frinds desktop PC running XP Home SP3, I uninstalled MSE v4.5 216.0 and installed v4.4.304.0. The next day, the icon had turned from green to red. I checked the version and it had changed back to v 4.5.216.0.

Since I had done this on my own XP laptop and a couple of others running Win 7, I thought perhaps I had gotten confused and not performed the operation. So I did it again using a fresh download of the MSE install executable. Verified the version as v4.4.304.0 and ran the definitions update and scan.

Next morning, my friend called and informed me the "little green house had turned red again". Accessed her PC using Teamviewer 8 and checked the version of MSE. It had reverted back to v 4.5 216.0 AGAIN... Now I'm really confused.

Additional symptom... The program will not finish a scan. It simply stops at apparently a random point and reverts to the Home screen. That's when the "Potentially Unprotected" status happens.

Anyone had anything like this or have an explanation about what is happening???

BTW... I used Revo Uninstaller to uninstall MSE.

EDIT: Just checked on my Sisters Win7 64-bit laptop which I did the same process on a few days ago, and it too had reverted to v4.5.216.0. What's going on here???

I did a search for my TEST folder. When I looked at the resulting Properties it showed it as on the Desktop (see link to image), but it is not on the desktop.
Apparently, there is a desktop FOLDER and there are folders in that desktop folder that are not on my desktop. This is very confusing.

In Windows XP when I clicked on My Computer I am sure I could see the desktop items.

How are things getting into that folder?
Why are things getting into that folder?
In Windows 7 how can I see the list of folders, etc. that are on my desktop?

Question: Problem On Desktop

Hello. I'm having a problem when I get to my desktop after start-up

I began to see something odd happening yesterday after my Firefox froze & stopped working. I then opened up some IE pages & they too froze up. When I clicked on the IE tab that asked if I wanted to reopen the pages, the pages opened & just started blinking on & off & acting crazy. I shut down my computer & left it off fr the night

This morning I turned it back on & it went through the normal start-up but when I got to my desktop, the background was all black & the cursor was just a spinning circle that wouldn't stop. I rebooted several times & the same thing occurred. Also, sometimes my desktop would show the icons on it & sometimes it wouldn't

I ran Malwarebytes which found nothing & am running Avira anti-virus now. So far it's showing some detections. It seems like this scan is going very slow & may take hours. Also, I'm in safe mode as I write this since I can't get online in normal mode

I'll hopefully clean up what Avira finds & I'll post what is found & see if that clears it up but am posting this now to see if anyone knows what causes this & has a solution

Thank you in advance for any help

Answer:Problem On Desktop

OK, Avira found a bunch of "detections" which were quarantined. I have no idea where I got all those things but most were "Java" type exe's.

Anyway, when I rebooted it went black again for roughly 5 seconds then the black went away & I had my normal desktop back & my cursor was normal. I'm able to get online with normal mode again. So..., I guess it's OK, although the black screen appearing again even for a few seconds bothers me

I don't want to bother you tech guys since I realize you have lot's of people to help & it seems I've fixed my problem

Thanks again for this forum

Thereafter my Windows Desktop Clock in the lower left Taskbar started to run about 3-4 minutes fast per hour while AOL Desktop was open. I uninstalled 9.8 which caused AOL Desktop to automatically roll back to 9.7. After that my clock returned to normal.

I just wanted to post my experience in this "Software" topic in case anyone runs into that issue or has a similar experience with 9.8.

I have a Dell computer about 4 yrs old, Windows Vista OS.  Several weeks ago I could not log on to my desktop, I am the administrator of my computer.  I can bring up the desktop of my daughter as user or as Guest as user.  Their desk top comes up.  I can go on the internet, etc butI cannot get the computer to read a disc, nor, can I load a new printer software.  Can anyone give me suggestions?dontbilkme

Answer:log on problem/no desktop

Sounds like you may have a corrupt profile for the administrator account (your acct), and the profiles that work are user accts vs admin and thats why you cant install printer driver or install anything via Disc. Last time I ran into this the computer was part of a corporate domain and so I was able to blow away their profile after grabbing Favorites and My Documents, and create a new profile. But since this is a home computer and it had only 1 admin acct of which it is inaccessible, you may need to use a profile repair tool or perform a Windows Repair Installation. If you have the system recovery disc's you could perform a Windows Repair Installation for Vista: http://www.top-windows-tutorials.com/reinstall-windows-vista.htmlThis will keep your data, favorites, etc, and correct for any corruption of system components including profiles. * Just be sure you are performing a Repair Install and not a Clean Install that will wipe all your data!!!

Or at least I thought that is what it was. Yesterday when I clicked on any icon on the desktop the program would open 30 times. And some programs opened by themselves like a ghost was doing it...lol.

I ran Norton and there were 6 viruses found. I think they were only adware. I deleted them all. Then I ran Super Anti Spyware. 67 threats were found.

I ran it again. Now 5 threats remain:

Memory: 2

Files: 3

They are:

Trojan NewDotNet
TrojanNew Dot Net Installer
I assume that the ones in the memory are the problems. They wont budge. How do I remove them??

Please help! xoxox

Answer:Problem With Desktop

You can try removing them in safe mode if that helps at all. Make a note of where the bad file is located, reboot the computer and boot into safe mode, and then remove the files manually and see if removing them manually fixes your issues.

I'm using Win 7 for a long time, but this is a problem I experienced not so long ago, about less than a month ago. it started to be like this :
the desktop shows up from time to time, about every 30 mins, it's more noticeable when i'm running a program in full screen, like playing games, etc.
for example, I was playing a soccer game, full screen of course, then while I was playing the desktop shows up, as if something shows up, like a program pop-up or something like that, but actually there was nothing, nothing at all, I checked everything, task manager, taskbar, but nothing shows up, then i'm back to the game, and after 30 mins or so, it happens again, the desktop shows up, and again, there was nothing. it's so annoying, and I remember this is a new problem for my desktop, it started since just a month ago, it was never like this before. I can't pinpoint the source of the problem, so I don't know where to start. has anybody experienced a problem like this? what's the problem maker and how to fix it? thank you so much.

Answer:my problem about the desktop.

Hi Endly,

Welcome to Seven forums.

It seems any of the program running in the background can also cause this issue. Please perform a clean boot and locate the source of the issue by following the link below:

Question: Desktop Problem

Hey
My problem is 3 things when I log on to Windows.

1: I recently installed XP x64 on my computer, which was a pretty bad idea, I never use it and it doesn't make a difference for my needs. Now every time I log on, a window will pop up saying this: "msmsgs.exe - The procedure entry point Wow64EnableWow64FsRedirection could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll."
I would like to get rid of this please. Even unistall it. Could someone point me to an uninstall guide for it?

2: The annoying little box from the nVidia Display Settings icon in the tray. It says about the SLI multi GPU rendering. I'm sure near everyones had it.

3: I just want to get rid of that stupid language toolbar without right clicking on the task bar everytime I get rid of it. I don't want it there in the first place.

Cheers for any help people. Here's a pic to see what I mean.

Answer:Problem with desktop

Have you tried cutting it and pasting it where you want it? right click the icon of the thing you want to move and select "cut" then right click in the folder you want to put it in and select "paste"

Or even when you download you could save it to a different folder.

I've been having this problem for a while now and cant for the life of me figure out why.Have checked on google, microsoft and the search here but cant find anythingI can be working away quite happily when everything disapears from the desktop -icons and the task bar- just leaving the blank desktop picture. After a few seconds it all comes back.In the event viewer it is logged in application source winlogon and the error message is "the shell stopped unexpectedly and explorer.exe was restarted"It happens once a day or maybe every two days and isn't when using a specific program.I havn't made any changes that I can think of that would have started this. It's really bugging me as to what it is so if anyone can enlighten me I would be very gratefulSheila

Answer:desktop problem? (I think!!)

Is it a dodgy cable? Or is it a dodgy graphics card? This could blank the picture for a while. Whether there is a way that can be fed back to the pc to say that there is a display fault, I'm not 100% sure. But the pc can detect what sort of monitor/graphics you're using. This feedback might give a funny signal that makes the thing hang and need to restart explorer.A good, but gentle, wiggle of the monitor cable plug on the bag of the pc might help show the fault up.Chris

Missing operating system

Answer:Problem with Desktop

Missing operating system typically means either the hard drive has completely failed and can't be detected or the files necessary the operating boot process are missing or corrupt. I would suggest checking the BIOS and seeing if the hard drive is detected.

Question: Desktop Problem

I have a friend who has a 'E-Machine' computer loaded with Windows XP. His IP is AOL. Several weeks ago
he noticed that when he turned the computer on that shortly after his desktop appeared a file folder also appeared. "Windows\System\System-32". Now this doesn't appear to be a major problem but he would like his normal desktop. Before he starts using his computer he has to close the folder. I attempted to try and help him and went into msconfig/startup but found no reference to this folder popping up on the desktop at startup.

I have not been able to determine how to eliminate this problem. The thing he last remembers is that he had a correct cursor location and he swirled his mouse around till it allowed correct cursor movement. I also would have tried a 'RESTORE" if he had notified me relatively quickly after the incident but he states it was probably several months ago when this first happened.

Any help to remedy this situation will be greatly appreciated......thanks

I closed it, only for it to re-launch. I used Ctrl Alt Delete to bring up the Task Manager and closed Works from here- but once again Works reloaded. This was repeated a few times but Works kept reloading, so I swiched off mains power and rebooted. From the log on screen, I clicked my name, After a delay my desktop apeared - but just my wallpaper, no taskbar, no shortcuts, nothing. I have tried System Restore - but this does not bring back my desktop. The other users settings are unaffected. You're going to have to download the drivers for a few things. What is the make and model of your computer?

You'll probably have to download them from another computer and via flash drive, CD, floppy, etc, put them on that computer and install.

Could you please help me with this big problem that I am having. I had a problem with 100% of my CPU being used. I searched for a thread:
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/147873-resolved-windows-explorer-100-cpu.html

When I attempted to reinstall the iriver software it attempted to install media player 10 and gave me a message that media player 10 is not compatible with this operating system. Desktop ini folders are appearing in all files and when try to open it gives me access denied error and sometimes the notepad is blank. Tried deleting it but it keeps coming back. Is there any software that I could use to cleanup desktop ini icons away?

Answer:Desktop ini problem

Hi Adrian,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

This is caused by your settings in 'Folder Options'. These files are normally hidden, and they contain information about how to display the contents of a particular folder. These files are harmless, and if you delete them, Vista will recreate them automatically. In some cases, whilst deleting them won't do any harm, this will cause the folder to revert back to displaying its contents in the default manner for the content of the folder. To hide these files again, the easiest way is to click on the start orb and type 'Folder Options' in to the search box and press enter. Click 'View' and then 'Restore Defaults'. Click 'OK' to close the dialogue box.

As of a few weeks ago I can not Right Click on the Desktop of my PC. If I try to Right Click, all of the icons and the bottom toolbar dissapears for a second. The background is the only thing visible. And then it comes back after a second or two. Once ina while I get an error message but I cannot Right CLick to open a new folder or anything. It just turns blank.

Here is what the error message said.

Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.

and here are some of the details:

Error Signature
AppName: explorer.exe
AppVer 6.0.2800.1106
ModName msvcrt.dll
ModVer 7.0.2600.1106
Offset: 00033ec0

The following files are included in the Error Report: C:\Docume~1\J\Locals~1\Temp\WER61.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt

I don't know if any of that info will help.

The other problems have been running slower than ever. Programs sometimes just close while running. There is a "Hmck?" or some sort of error every time I start the computer. (I'll have to restart it for the exact name of the error) I It just seems like this computer isn't running properly. It's a Dell Dimension 2350, about 7 months old. I have run virus scan and none show up.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

There is a posting on the Networking section by happyhotspur about a problem with BT Desktop Helpthat has had little response. So I will try on here. When clicking on to the BT Desktop Help site you aretold to download a new version. The new version interferes with other functions such as the BT WirelessSet-Up and the new Desktop Help will not work anyway. I was on the phone to the BT Help Line for over an hour (bloody tipical of BT) before they were able to fix the problem. I am not all that bothered about the little used BT Desktop Help site but wonder if anyone else has had a similar problem and if they have an answer to it. Personally I think it is a case of BT bringing out a new version of it`s Desktop Help that still has bugs in it.

Answer:Problem With BT Desktop Help?

I had better bump this to the top. There may be more people about at the weekend.

Re: Please help (SpySheriff mainly)

Hey all, i have a very similar problems. I have read numerous articles and ran all the online scanners(inc Panda) removed what they found, ran norton, removed what it found, ran adaware.... nothing helps, i normally get rid of adware without any problems, but this is playing up on my big time. and the desktop thing is so annoying, i managed to get the desktop display settings back by creating a new reg file from scratch, but the annoying warning message still stays there.

Please help, i think this truhly is my last resort

cheers

Answer:Another Desktop Problem!

From now on please create a new thread for your problem instead of posting in someone else's. I have created a new thread for you this time so please post in here from now on.

First, please follow ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

After doing ALL of the above if you still have a problem:

Download HijackThis 1.99.1

Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the ZIP file as your backups will not be safely stored.

Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

Run HijackThis and save your log file.

Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next post. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post as it will be removed).

Need help with HJT? See this thread: NO HIJACK THIS LOG FILES BEFORE READING THIS: HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting

Hi All,

New to this forum, hope someone can help.

An HP a405n computer about 3 years old, bought new, never had a problem.

Today we had a power failure, I unpluged the computer before I left the house. When I got back and repluged, the power switch on the front only flashed (no other sound like fans ..etc). A green light also flashes on the back, but that is all. No mention of this problem in the manual?
Any Ideas?

Thanks,
AdelN

Answer:Problem with an HP desktop

Sorry to say, but I am pretty sure your motherboard has been damaged.

The "green lights" you mention: Is one on the rear, main power supply and the other on the front panel near the power button? Does the rear light start flashing even before you push the power-on button in front?

Did the power outage happen while the computer was running?

If the answers are "Yes", I think you should order a new board from HP. They retail for about 86.00USD. I've replaced two on same series machines in the past six weeks. So, I am not giving careless advice.

But, before you do that, look here for my recommendations for a similar problem. http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic88832.html The troubleshooting procedures for your issue are the same, except that you should first try another power supply and one new stick of memory. You will have to find the CMOS pin location at the HP site (It's very late here and I am tired.)

Let me know how things work out.

Good luck.

I have a problem because I have this folder on my desktop and it's called "Desktop" and every time I download something it always goes into that folder, instead of on my actual desktop, which is kind of annoying. I would like all of my downloads to go directly onto my desktop and not the folder..

Does anyone know how I can fix this?
I just want to get rid of this folder(which was there since I reformatted my laptop) and I want to get rid of it and have all my downloads just appear on my desktop like normal.

Can anyone please help me out?
-Thanks in advance! =)

Question: Desktop problem

When I turn on my PC, after a minute or two the screen freezes...I cannot move the mouse. When leaving it on, the computer shuts down after a few minutes. Could this be related to the CMOS battery?

Answer:Desktop problem

Typically this means that the one of your RAM chips has gone bad but this could also be related to overheating or the motherboard. I would take out the RAM individually and boot to determine which chip is the issue, etc. Otherwise, you may want to make sure that the fan is spinning and cooling off the motherboard. Beyond that, I would remove all extraneous peripherals to see if there is a hardware conflict going on but typically you'd get an error from that.

Question: Desktop Problem

Hello,

First of all, I don't know a lot about computers but I'm not "Computer Illiterate".

I recently experienced a power outage. My computer is connected to a power strip which I thought would protect it from power outages. When I turned my computer back on after the outage, I selected "Restart Windows Normally" from a menu that came up. All that came up after that was a window that lets me access all my files and programs. The problem is that this window doesn't usually come up, but more importantly, my desktop is not displayed. I can't see any of my desktop shortcuts and I can't see the bar that is usually at the bottom which contains the "Start" button. I can see the desktop background color that I chose but not even the photo that I had selected will show. As far as I know I can access all of my programs and files with the exception of the "Taskbar and startup menu" in the control panel.

I tried restarting the computer several times as well as system restore.

Any and all help with this problem will be greatly appreciated!! Thanks for reading.

Question: Desktop Problem

Alright, for a few weeks despite my best efforts and all of my "protection", I can't get this weird shit off my desktop... It's like a sheet of paper on top of my normal desktop and I can see a sliver of my desktop picture at the very top... I imagine that it's probably got something to do with Internet Explorer, wich I used to use but now I have firefox. Also when I try to run Spybot S&D it freezes when it reaches the Internet Explorer files, i'm not sure if thats related but not being able to run one of my best anti-spyware programs is more than a little annoying. Here is a link that should work [SS of my desktop], not sure if it will help but it can't hurt... I would appreciate any help/suggestions anyone could provide. Thanks.

I started up my PC last Sunday only to find it was operating in Safe Mode. Following someones instructions,I restored it and it seemed to be operating properly but I could not connect to the internet. I got it looked at and was told the modem wasn't working and that would have caused it to operate in Safe Mode. They replaced the Modem but I am having the following problems:1) It will only dial up if I lift and replace the telephone receiver as it is dialling.2) I cannot access secure sites.3) It normally goes into "Active Desktop Recovery Mode" when starting up 4) It wont shut down without a window coming up which i cannot remember the content of but with something like these 3 options : wait so many seconds, end task, cancel. it then says "this has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down" so I click OK but it comes up again and again and then I have to end up resetting it and then shutting it down.5) I cannot use certain programmes such as Greetings workshop- the screen keeps freezing.6) It will not recognise installed software such as Roxio easy CD creator.Any help would be greatly appreciated.Skinn

Answer:Desktop problem - help!

If nothing else, at least this acts as a bump!Try running crapcleaner click hereUninstall the programs that you have problems with.Defrag your hard drive. Then try reinstalling one program at a time. You may already know, you can click START/RUN and type msconfig click OK then in the new window click on the STARTUP tab. This will give you a list of programs which are run on Start up. You may be able to spot a cause there.Also.... Can you retrive your internet connection by inserting the ISP's disc and following the onscreen menu? This can sometimes fix connection problems.Kev.

I assume by "it" you mean the pop-up menu. Sometimes an overload of desktop icons will cause this or a corrupt icon cache file may be the problem.

EDIT: the icons are NOT highlighted.

Question: Desktop problem

Hi all
I've been trying for the last 2 hours to get to my desktop after waking it from sleep - when I did, the appearance was really weird with the start menu over-laid onto the desktop, with no desktop or taskbar icons showing. I managed to get the taskbar icons back by right-clicking the taskbar - but there's only 3 options available (see screenshot attached)

I've logged off, restarted, cold-restarted but it's always as in the s/shot - can't right-click for Task Manager or anything other than the 3 options shown. I've logged into my wife's account and her's is fine/normal - it's just mine!

Anyone have any suggestions please?

Thanks if you can help me out here.

Answer:Desktop problem

I believe you get yourself into Tablet Mode.
At far right of your taskbar, next to Time, there is a Notification icon > click it > click Tablet Mode.
Does that bring back your desktop ?

Question: desktop problem

I use the computer together with others. Everyone has his name and password. Now usually when someone stopped working and somebody else wanted to work after him, the desktop would appear with the user names and you could type in your password. But for some time now the desktop appears with nothing on it, just the blue screen. The keyboard and mouse do not react and the task manager does not open, so all you can do is to 'brutally' switch off the computer.
Can anyone please tell me what this can be due to and what can be done about it?

Answer:desktop problem

this could happen because of two main reasons :
1. There is some hardware malfunction that stops the
computer from working normally.
2. Some program that is running in memory that takes
memory and CPU resources that makes the computer
stuck or react very very very slow...
Try to check this two options...

Im pretty stupid when it comes to things about computers.
I know a little bit but this is just beyond me I dont know if its a hardware problem software problem or what.

But I reformatted and reinstalled Windows XP Home Edition SP2 due to virus problem, sumhow got a virus and it $#@^#@ over my computer and I wasnt able to access internet, download nearly anything, or even system restore. So I reinstalled the Windows and thought that I will just start all over again,

But wen I tried to setup internet nothing would work. Still. I went to device manager and said that everything was working except: Ethernet Controller, Multimedia Audio Controller, RAID Controller, RAID Controller.
They all show yellow bubble with exclamation mark in them and I try update, reinstall and watever but I cant cause no internet. I have no othr CDs other than the windows XP home SP2 disk.

I know my computer works with my internet cause it was working before the virus.
I dont know much about the desktop because my dad is the person who gave it to me and always messed with it.
