Disk cleanup?

Question: Disk cleanup?

While running disk cleanup, I noticed that it does not remove the (Webclient/Publisher temp files, which it says are O.K. to remove, also it will not compress old files. It always has 64K in the compress old files left in it after compressing it. Is this normal, I run defrag about every 2 weeks and even after that, it shows up on disk cleanup. Any ideas, is it worth worring about?

Preferred Solution: Disk cleanup?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just got a new Y500 yesterday. I installed and uninstalled a lot of programs as you are want to do with a new machine. When I tried cleaning the disk (system files), it gets hung about 80%. It can't get passed "Windows Update Cleanup". It's been going for an hour.

I'm running 8.1 with all updates on, supposedly.

In Control Panel, Troubleshooting, System & Security, Fix Problems with Windows Update, Advanced, Run as Administrator: It says it fixed the problem (whatever that may be). I rerun it. It says it fixed the problem. This goes on ad infinitum. It never says there was nothing to fix.

I have run 'sfc/ scannow' and 'Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth'. The former found nothing. I can't recall whether Dism found anything, but if it did, it fixed it (no errors).

I have also tried Safe Boot and logging on as Administrator, then running Disk Cleanup. It still hangs.

Suggestions anyone?

Hi all, so recently I have reformatted my hard drive and fresh installed Windows 8.1 Pro on my PC got all of my drivers and software without problem and copied everything off my external Hard Drive without an issue, also had no issues while doing Windows Updates, so anyhow after I did the Windows Updates on my system I decided to run Disk Cleanup and to Clean Up System Files, had no issues here, was able to select everything, clicked OK and then Delete Files, well now it is getting stuck on Windows Update Cleanup, been stuck for over an hour, any solutions to make this go a little faster, thanks for any help

Well, as the title suggests, I'm having an issue with Disk Cleanup with a new SSD I recently purchased. In all my years with HDDs I never had this problem. I've been running Windows 8.1 with an HDD for over a year now with no such problem so this is quite new & odd to me. The Windows Update Cleanup feature in Disk Cleanup always worked for me with a HDD. If there was ever a time it didn't work, I certainly can't recall. I'm assuming it's something in the way SSDs are built vs. standard HDDs. Though again, this is my first SSD so, I rally don't have others to compare it to.

So, essentially when Disk Cleanup gets to the Windows Update Cleanup part, it hangs:

I tried:

sfc /scannow & I tried:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

But, when I get to to Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth it hangs:

It's been a while since I had to do any major PC repairs & this is my first personal run in with this particular issue & maybe I'm just out of touch. Maybe missed a few steps? Can somebody help me out? This is the SSD that I have if that helps Kingston High Performance SATA Solid-State Drives (SSD) for Laptops, Desktops and Servers in 60GB, 120GB, 180GB, 240GB and 480GB capacities.

Has anyone of you noticed the Windows Update Cleanup Option in Windows 8?
It cleans up all the residual files which remain after you have updated Windows.
You will see this option only if there are such files on your disk and Disk Cleanup is able to delete those files.
If no such files exist or after you have cleaned them up, you wont see the option!

Question: Disk cleanup

When I try to run disck cleanup...I just get the message..."Compressing files....this may take a few minutes".....then....nothing happens..
Does anyone have an explanation or solution?
FIRST TIME i'VE TRIED A POST......IF THIS IS IN THE WRONG PLACE.....APOLOGIES...

Answer:Disk cleanup

Depending on how long you've waited, that's a pretty typical scenario. Compressing files takes a long time and if you have a large hard drive and a slow processor, it could takes hours or (worst case) days. I suggest turning off your power-saving features and running it overnight, or for a long time during the day.

What's the best thing to do here? Thanks in advance all.

A recent System Restore did not go well and now some files are damaged. Among them is cleanmgr.exe or Disk Cleanup.
Everytime I run it, it just gets an error than closes. I was wondering where I could download a copy of it so I can replace my old error filled one with the new one.

Answer:Disk Cleanup

Can you not try another restore point. When you click on system restore it should give you the option of trying a earlier date. You could also try pressing f9 on boot up and click on repair my computer.

Another option is Vista recovery disc.Google vista recovery disc and get it from a safe site like pc world. Its a free download just download the file and burn it onto a disc then pop in your your dvd drive and see if that helps.

Question: Disk Cleanup

Yesterday I performed a disk cleanup on my computer because I thought it was time.

Today: I was playing a game (the Sims) and (it's hard to explain if you've never played the sims. The people, when they perform actions, have a popup over their heads, explaining to you what they are doing...

Well, today, I was playing and one of my sims when going to perform an action had a popup over his head reading "Missing Animation".

Also I noticed that when a sim walked, just once, that they weren't walking normally. They were just tilting side to side, no legs moving, yet they were moving forward.

Could this have anything to do with the disk cleanup. I mean it did take me about an hour to compress files on my computer. I had a lot to compress.

I also defragged my computer, (there was a message saying that some of the files could not be defragged), but that shouldn't have anything to do with the game messing up, should it.

Answer:Disk Cleanup

dont worry about the defragmentation

the game might not be able to access compressed files
i would uncompress and see if it goes back to normal, if not u have to reinstall the game

I was having problems with my computer freezing up, error messages, unable to install programs. Anyway I did a disk scan and defrag. When the defragment was done I had a long list of files that could not be defragmented. What does that mean and should I remove them, how? What are fragments? I have windowsxp home edition. Thanks

Answer:Disk cleanup

Some files can't be defragmented because they are in use by the system. Don't try deleting them. They were in use for a reason. Just forget about them. A few files that can't be defragged when there are hundreds of thousands on your drive are nothing to worry about.

Question: disk cleanup

Is it ok to delete oldchkdisk files in disk cleanup? And what about compress files, I read that you don't have to delete compress files.

Answer:disk cleanup

If you're talking about the *.chk files that are created by Window's chkdsk program, then you can safely delete them. They consist of file fragments that chkdsk recovered from fixing disk errors and unless you're some sort of forensic computer expert I don't think you'll have any use for them. Salvaging useable files from these fragments is nearly impossible.

As for the "compress" files that you mention, I don't know what you're referring to. Please elaborate. Where do you find these files and what 3-character extension do they have (if any).

Not like its a problem, it just gets annoying doing it.. over and over again.

Any Fixes?

once it finishes im going to go and boot the xp cd and try to "Repair" windows to see if it works

help?

Answer:Umm Disk Cleanup

You could just try cleaning out your Recent, History and Cookies folders, as well as the Recycle Bin. This is essentially what Disk Cleanup does. If you have programs you don't use, you can get rid of them (another thing Disk Cleanup does). Do these and you will never need to install Disk Cleanup. Ever.

Everytime I try to use disk cleanup it never finishes. I have ran it for 10 hours before and it just keeps thinking. It never gets the stage where I can actually delete the files. Does anyone know what's going on and how I can fix this? Thanks for the help.

Answer:can't use disk cleanup

It requires a registry edit. You can either download a small script to do it for you or you can make the change manually.

If you want to use the script, go to Kelly's Korner, scroll down to line 48 and in the right-hand column, click on "Disk Cleanup-Compress Old Files Freezes" to download the script. (The word "Undo" is a second link to download another script that will undo the changes made by the first one.)

Follow the instructions at the top of that page to use the script. It will disable Disk Cleanup's "Compress Old Files" feature which is the cause of the problem you're having 99% of the time.

To edit the registry manually:
Go to Start>Run, type in "regedit" (without the quotes), click OK

Navigate to thefollowing key:
HKEY-Local Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\Volumecaches\Compressoldfiles

Delete the above key

Run disk cleanup (reboot may be required if disk cleanup still won't complete)

This seems to have worked:

An easy way to do this is to go into your drive, like C: and highlight all of the files with CTRL+A

Click OK and it should uncompress any files that have been compressed.Click to expand...

Question: Disk Cleanup

in disk cleanup list there is:

--per user archived windows error report 19.8 mb
--per user queued windows error report 103.mb
--system error report 726 kb

Can these be safely cleaned out with disk cleanup? I searched around on this and all I found was that anyone who had these removed had nothing but problems with their PC?
Afew months ago I disabled and then removed the Google tool bar from ctrl panel because I.E. was constantly stopping to work and closing down. It helped alot but it still does it occasionally, especially when double clicking on small pics to view larger (but then maybe this should be in a different thread). The error reports are just text files containing the reports on various
errors and can be deleted safely.
Offline webpages are cahced pages or saved pages and can be deleted safely.
Basically, there isn't anything in disk cleanup that cant be deleted without problems.

I am having a problem with cleaning my C drive. I tried last night about 2 am to use the Accesories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup and this morning at 10 am it has done NOTHING. It's like it's stuck on stupid or something. I had to go in and manually delete some files, but I am afraid to go to far with that.

Can anyone help?

Marcus

Answer:Disk Cleanup

Download this registry edit to your desktop, (right click and save target as), then run it and confirm the merge to the registry.

This is a known problem and this is the fix:

The Disk Cleanup utility in Windows XP may have a bug. I use this utility (cleanmgr.exe) about once a month to help tidy up my main drive. Yesterday I tried to use it and discovered that while the utility was attempting to determine how much disk space could be recovered by compressing unused files, it seemed to not function correctly.

The utility did not hang (task manager showed it still running and I could cancel out of it) but it stopped progressing after two spots in the progress thermometer and the disk drive activity stopped. There was no more progress after several minutes. After pressing the Cancel button, the application seemed to close but in checking Task Manager, the cleanmgr.exe process was still using 96% of CPU time.

Since the utility worked fine on two other disk drives, it does not seem that the utility is corrupted but was thrown into limbo by one of the files it was attempting to process while attempting to determine how much disk space could be recovered by compressing unused files.

Does anyone have any ideas on this situation and how to fix it?

Thanks for your help.

Answer:XP Disk Cleanup bug?

This is due to a corrupt temporary file. Clean out all temp files manually and try again.

Or, to fix it permanently:

Go to Start > Run, and type:
regedt32

Navigate to:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\Volumecaches\Compressoldfiles

Export the key and delete it.

You can return the key if you like, or leave it out.

Question: Disk cleanup

Hello, I am having a problem with system restore. I did a manual back up of the system on drive D (RECOVERY) and there wasn't enough room on that drive (size 10 gb). Now drive D is full. I tried running Disk Cleanup but when the dialog box comes up saying "ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO DELETE ALL BUT THE LAST RESTORE POINT" I click on delete and nothing happens.

I don't want to compicate things but this all started when I turned on the computer and I got an error message saying that

WINDOWS CAN NOT START DO YOU WANT TO RUN MICROSOFT REPAIR (RECOMMENDED)

So I ran the repair utility and the the system loaded up normally after having a black screen for about 3 or 4 minutes. I got a repair message saying the system was repaired after a blue screen error.

The only other problem was that the avast aniti virus was disabled (latest free stripped down version) and I couldn't turn it back on or run a scan. I restarted the computer and after having the black screen for a few minutes windows loaded up but with the same above.

I then uninstalled Avast and installed the previous version (4.8) and updated it). the computer was now loading up normally. so I decided to backup the system using D: Recovery which led me to the not enough recovery space problem. This seems to be the only problem now.

Is there a way to remove the backup which failed because of not enough space or should I just re size D: from 10 to 15 or 20 gigs?

And does anyone have any idea&... Read more

Answer:Disk cleanup

Hi GeekWannaB

First I must say that I'm not familiar with Vista, however,
It seems to me that maybe you're confusing System Restore with the
Recovery partition on your hard drive. If your computer came with Windows pre-installed with two partitions,
the D: Recovery partition is not meant to be used as a backup destination.
It's there so you can Restore the operating system and the software that came with the computer.
The restore process generally wipes out whatever is on C: drive and returns it to it's initial state.

If that is in fact the way your computer is configured, you should not try to reconfigure the D: partition. Also, that partition may be Protected and access is limited.

System Restore is a Windows facility that creates a backup of specific operating system files and, in Vista, some others as well.

I'm sure there is a way to remove what you added to D: but I won't try to advise you on that.

One last question, is AVAST 4.8 really obsolete? Because I like it better than the new version which seems to give you less protection.Click to expand...

I am using Avast! 5.0.677 but I started with 4.8.
Don't know why you feel that version 5 provides Less protection.
I think it is an Improvement from 4.8 - just my opinion.

Question: Disk Cleanup ?

First off, I am no computer wiz, so please keep it as simple as possible.

I ran Disk Cleanup and found several large items that I was wondering if it's OK to clean them? Attached is a pic of the Disk Cleanup Window in 3 sections. Underlined in purple are the things I'm not sure about. Are these things all safe to clean?
I googled the "Per user archived Windows Error Reporting files" And some people stated they lost all their programs when cleaning this section.

Thanks. Your help is greatly appreciated.
J.

Answer:Disk Cleanup ?

Hello J, and welcome to Vista Forums.

That problem was only if you had a the bug where the error report files were large GB sizes instead. Since you do not, it will be safe to check and delete those items.

Vista Home Basic
Can anyone help? My Disk Cleanup doesn't!!
I go through all the motions and it produces all the right boxes, but on clicking Ok to cleanup, it it shows the green line running through. But on inspection to see if the hibernation button has gone it is still there.
I have gone through the whole process several times, but all the files I've ticked to be cleaned including the Hibernation file (which is nearly two GBs are still showing)
I would appreciate any suggestions.
Ron.

Answer:Disk Cleanup

Update.
I thought I would try cleaning up the other drives, and they worked, so went back to C: drive and this time that worked.
So all is well at the moment. Will now replace the Hibernation facility.
All go enit?

Question: disk cleanup?

can i check everything when i run Disk Cleanup?

Answer:disk cleanup?

I don't believe your question can be answered with a simple yes/no. The answer is most likely "it depends" on whether or not you have any important data on your machine that you don't want deleted. For a better understanding of what each category includes, this Microsoft article and Seven Forum tutorial may help you decide what to delete.

Delete files using Disk Cleanup

Disk Cleanup - Open and Use

There are no specific warnings not to delete something so it's pretty much what each user decides on. FWIW, the one area of concern might be your system restore points. You may not want to delete all but the most recent one. Again, that's personal preference. But before using disk cleanup I'd recommend making a new restore point just in case you realize something was deleted that you needed. Better yet, a system image.

Have you tried waiting a while to see if it decides to come back? You could try running system file checker, run "sfc" in win98, that way if there's a missing file it may pick up on it and re-install it for you.

Question: Disk Cleanup

I am running Windows XP Home-SP2.
Every week I run programs to keep my OS performing as best I can. Disk cleanup, disk defrag,Spybot S+D.
Windows is my firewall. AVG Free is my ant-virus program(runs all the time).
Yesterday when I ran my disk cleanup, I noticed the "set up log files" box didn't have a check mark in it. It also shows that this file(s) contains 2152KB of space. When I highlighted this particular entry, all it would tell me is that it is "files created by Windows". I'd like to clean up as much disk space as possible, but didn't want to mess with this entry as I don't know what may be linked to it+crash my system.

I'd like to know what these set up log files really are+what they have to do with the disk cleanup operation at all.

Thank you
honu1

Answer:Disk Cleanup

Setup log files can be used to help troubleshoot installation problemsXP creates the following log files: * setupact.log-This log file contains a list of actions in chronological order that occurred during the graphical installation phase, such as file copies and registry changes. The OS also stores setup error log entries in this file. XP writes the setupact.log file to the %systemroot% folder (e.g., c:\windows). * setuperr.log-This log file contains a list of errors that occurred during installation and their severity (this log file should be 0 bytes in size if no errors occurred during installation). XP writes the setuperr.log file to the %systemroot% folder. * comsetup.log-This log file contains installation information about Optional Component Manager and COM+ components. XP writes the comsetup.log file to the %systemroot% folder. * setupapi.log-XP writes information to the setupapi.log file each time a .inf file executes, including any errors. XP writes the setupapi.log file to the %systemroot% folder. * netsetup.log-This log file contains information about workgroup and domain membership. XP writes the netsetup.log file to the \%systemroot%\debug folder. * setup.log-The Recovery Console (RC) uses the setup.log file to gain information about the Windows installation during repair operations. XP writes the setup.log file to the \%systemroot%\repair folder.windowsitpro.com

So back last year around January to April there was some Microsoft updates that were not "really" good. Now I have not seen or heard or a fix, but the issue was that when you ran Disk Cleanup some Microsoft updates that were dependent on older updates; the older updates got uninstalled which then the systems got grumpy. I was one of them with 4 out of 7 (I stopped and never did the other 3 systems, Disk Cleanup I mean). I had to image back those 4 and since today never ran the cleanup

Then there were forum threads also identifying this so the rule was not to run the Disk Cleanup last year. But that's all I heard.

Today and this months round of Microsoft updates I see the "run Disk Cleanup" to solve the long waiting of Windows 7 machines to check for updates. But before doing that my question is where is it stated that the issue from last year has been fixed?

I am currently experiencing slow scans for updates and before I try some of the fixes here (running Disk Cleanup) I want to make sure that the previous has been fixed. What forum shows this or what newer update fix it?

Thanks

The files you listed above are perfectly fine to be deleted via Disk Cleanup. They are log files for generating error reports (as the names suggest) & are meant for maintaining a log of processes during a crash, what files crashed & other system details on the time of crash.

Question: disk cleanup bug??

Disk cleanup says it can free up to 4 TB of space on my 120GB C: drive, after a update. WTF!!!

Even adding the 2TB HDD and another 120 GB SSD (which is 60 GB partitioned) which are far from full, this doesn't make any sense.

Is this some weird bug in Disk Cleanup utility? Is there a explanation for this?
Thanks

Answer:disk cleanup bug??

This is a known item, and appears after the Anniversary Update to Windows 10. It's related to Windows Update files that are heavily cross-linked on disk, which causes them to be reported as larger than actual size. If you run this Google Search you'll see this item has been widely discussed in the community. It turns out to be about 900 MB of on-disk info, if memory serves, so it's nowhere near as big a thing as it may seem!

Disk cleanup gets rid of files that are stored for faster web page viewing. It is definitely OK to run this as it keeps things from getting clogged up over time. I usually do a disk cleanup and a defrag once a week as i use my computer a lot. If you are a casual user then it probably would be ok to do this once a month.

Answer:Disk cleanup ?

It does not matter how long it takes to run a disk cleanup all that matters actually is that it is done properly. There are lots of reasons that one computer will take longer than another.

1 The speed of the computer.

2 How much stuff is on the hard drive

3 The size of the hard drive - the larger ones will take longer

4 The speed of the hard drive 5600 RPM drives will take longer than 7200 RPM drives

5 If the computer is infected that could make it go longer also

I could keep on going but that will take too long but I am sure you get the idea. If the disk cleanup is running OK and doing its job then it is OK.

well, go into your internet options, and clear out your cache and temp files that way first, then, run defrag to compress the files. this will get most of the heavy work that cleanup does out of the way so cleanup won't get stuck when you run it next time. i had the same problem and this always works for me.
