DVD-ROM drive won't play DVD movies!

Question: DVD-ROM drive won't play DVD movies!

HELP, I just got my friend's ASUS DVD-ROM drive installed on my computer today, but when I tried playing DVD movies, the DVD player (ASUSDVD) just keep giving the error message "Software DVD Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." The same happened when I used Windows Media Player, RealDVD Player to play that disk... I also tried playing another DVD movie and still no luck... Even though I can see the contents of the disks in the Windows Explorer but the movies just won't be played... It wouldn't even play VCD movies (same error message)...

However, softwares seem to run fine... Please tell me what might the problem and how may I solve it?
My DVD drive is ASUS E616

Preferred Solution: DVD-ROM drive won't play DVD movies!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Pioneer DVR-103 DVD-RW drive and now all of a sudden it won't play any dvd movies. I have tried it on Windows Media Player and on WinDVD5 and nothing happens. It will play audio cd'd but not dvd movies. I am running Windows XP. I need help!!!! Pleaseeeeeeeeeeee!!

Answer:DVD Drive won't play movies!!!

Sounds like the dvd decoder got messed up somehow.

I would look for a virus or any other foreign data in your computer first to see if that is the culprit. If that's not the case, then I would re-install the drive and make sure that you have the latest drivers for it installed as well.

Also, check the region you have it set up for. On some drives you can only change them so many times so be careful and monitor what you have it set up for and how many times you've changed it. I've heard of people basically ruining drives because of this.

Hope that helps some, kiregar

I have just completed building my first PC from scratch. Everything is brand new and has been great until I tried to play a DVD.I have a Lite-on DVD ROM drive set as master, this came with PowerDVD software V.5.0 which I have loaded.I also have a Sony DVD-R/RW drive set as slave which came with Nero Software and InCD which I have also loaded. When I try to play a DVD movie in either drive the disc spins, the software (either Nero or PowerDVD) loads but then stops responding and I have to exit out ctrl-alt-del.I have no problems playing CD's, CD-Rom or DVD-Rom in either drive. I have also checked that the region code for the software is set to region 2.Could this be a software conflict? Does it matter that the drives are connected through the secondary IDE port as the first one is free as I have an SATA HDD? I really have no clue what to do next as this is the first PC I've built.

Answer:DVD Drive won't play DVD movies

Set the RW drive as master nd the rom drive as slave.RW sometimes don't like being slave to a Rom.

You would need a power source and IDE to USB or other interface adapter, and would not be cost effective (it would cost more than the CD-r/rw drive), and won't play movies. You would do better to get an external drive like this:

I have a new HP ENVY 700-147C with 12GB RAM running win 8.1 & I have a vexing problem; I can easily mount an iso file to virtual drive from windows explorer but I am not able to play it with PowerDVD or any other player.. It sees the virtual drive but it does not load the movie only the VIDEO & AUDIO_TS folders with the VOB files are seen. However, PowerDVD will automatically play a movie on dvd disk when it is inserted into the player & it can play it from windows explorer by right clicking on the dvd drive & 1 of the choices is "Play with Cyberlink Powerdvd." When I right click a virtual drive containing an ISO file from my HDD, showing drive letter & title, just like the DVD disk, the "Play With Cyberlink PowerDVD" choice does not appear. This is very annoying & is driving me nuts. Any help appreciated.

I bought a Liteon DVD-CD burner Combo drive a month ago. It played DVD movies just fine until 2 days ago. Troubleshooter says it's fine, so I thought it was a software error and reinstalled Power DVD 5. It stilll won't work. All it does is after I put the disc in, the HDD loads for a minute and the system reboots. I have no idea what to do now. It makes me sick to think I may have to shell out another $44 for a new one. puke: Now it won't even load CD-ROM games unless they're already installed. I updated the firmware but it still won't work. I may just have to vent my frustration out on it. :knock:

Hi, my grandaughter who is heading to Americorps next month can't view DVD's on her laptop.
She has a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop and a few months ago her hard drive crashed. A college friend of hers installed a new hard drive but she lost everything. Trying to help, he installed an illegal XP Pro (this was a bad move & I'm trying to fix this).
Just before her room was broken into, all her Dell discs that came with the laptop were stolen. Dell is no longer able to replace the discs since the laptop is too old. I've managed to help her download most of the drivers and she's now up and running, however she can not play any DVDs. I'v found that she originally had Sonic Cineplayer 3.0. We now get the message that there is no decoder loaded. How can I help there a place where I can download Sonic Cineplayer for free....neither of us have any $$$$$ to buy it.
She's a super 21 year old and plans on spending her life helping others...and she's for real!!

I truly will appreciate any help.
Thank you in advance

I've been having some trouble with this for some time, ever since I downloaded a clip from the internet and had trouble with it. I ended up trying several different movie players and got the clip to work, but now my ATI DVD Player no longer plays movies. Whenever I put a DVD in my drive and start ATI DVD Player I now get a message saying it's failed because :

1) Audio Device is in use or not installed.
2) Display overlay is not available.
3) Not enough video memory.

I've been to the ATI website and tried the tips on there but nothing works. I've tried turning off every other background program but still no joy. I have DirectX 8.1 installed, and have just upgraded to the latest Windows Media Player (7.1) which at least works properly again.

I'm using Windows ME, have a Radeon card (the first Radeon I think, very early one, not sure of the name), 256mb RAM, plenty of HD space and no other problems with the computer.

Reading this, is it safe to say that the drive intermittently reads discs for you?

I've had very similar symptoms, and I've managed to resolve them by updating the firmware on the drive.

It's a stab, as this was a handful of years ago, and the DVD format war was still going on, and I wouldn't expect a modern drive to have this issue, but you never know...

Can Your PC Play Blu-Ray Movies?

Practically any modern computer is capable of playing DVD movies. But what about Blu-Ray movies? Everyone knows that this high definition video format requires some processing power and probably additional capabilities. Cyberlink?s Blu-Ray Disc Advisor is trying to answer that question for you by determining if a computer is capable of running Blu-Ray movies.
It was created as a reference tool and will display results seconds after execution. The results are divided into two categories. Basic Playback will check if the hardware of the computer is able to play Blu-Ray movies. The diagnostic tool will analyze the cpu, system memory, video card, disc drives but also the software players and video connection types available.
The detection is not overly accurate but should be sufficient on most occasions. It did detect 2 Gigabytes of computer memory on a system with 4 gigabytes installed. The Blu-Ray Disc Advisor will show if the items are Blu-Ray ready. A green icon means the hardware or software component can playback Blu-Ray movies while red means it is not capable of, yellow means an upgrade is required and brown means that the software cannot rate that item.

The second tab analyses the advanced Blu-Ray playback capabilities of the computer hardware. This includes special features that are included in some Blu-Ray movie titles like Internet interaction or picture-in-picture.
Items will be tested for dual-video decoding capabilities, network... Read more

Answer:Movies will not play.

I think there are 3 possabilities, either the software you have was somehow linked to the previous graphics card and therefore will now not work, this I consider unlikely or the dvd laser is kaput, in which case it will only be able to read CDs, this can be checked by using a data DVD such as a cover disk or the software is either corrupted or not able to detect the DVD player for whatever reason, if so a reinstall of your software may cure it.I would try testing the drive with a data DVD if you have one and then reinstaling the software.

This is not a problem with the OS. It's a problem with movies I have downloaded, some of which  won't play, or play without sound. When I try to play them, there's a problem. Either it plays, but without sound, or I get a popup that says I need to get some software to make it work. Many others have worked beautifully. The problem ones are formats using .avi, .flv, and sometimes mp4 extensions, all of which are quite standard. But the .avi ones won't play, even in Windows Media Player (yes, I checked that it will play .avi files). So how can an .avi file NOT play? Unless somebody tampered with the coding of the extension somehow. I'm no expert on such things. Similar things have been done to SOME of the .flv and mp4 movies, too. They all have to have additional software. But none of it appears to be offered at the DivX site. I use mostly DivX and WMP for playing videos. My system is W7. Most of the time, just to GET the downloads, I had to jockey around at the sites - they didn't give the download sites in a truly straightforward manner. Some asked me to "upgrade" Flash, and I rejected that until I went to the Flash site and found my software was entirely up to date. So it seemed obvious the "update" I was being offered was - not lovely. Though the site that gives the list of sites offering a particular movie is not Grade A, its WOT rating is perfect. I DO get what they offer, but it's the sites they direct me to, the ones that have the movies tha... Read more

For instance, on this site: Epic Fail Funny Videos and Funny Pictures the video that says "faith in your parkour" looks like it loads fine, but nothing happens when I click to play it. It's totally unresponsive. This seems to be an occurrence here and there, as some flash videos and content work just fine.

Yes, I have uninstalled all versions of flash, with a clean install of the current version.

I have all plug-ins etc disabled for Firefox too.

Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Cannot play some flash movies?

"I have all plug-ins etc disabled for Firefox too"

In Firefox, Flash Player is a plug-in. Flash videos cannot run if you disable that.

Hi all,

I am trying to play movie from a DVD in Windows 8 RP but nothing happens.

I tried installing Windows Media Player 11 but the program told me that it already has Windows Media Player 12
Can anyone shed any light on this please ?

Answer:How to Play Movies in Windows 8 RP

MS are getting rid of all kinds of useful things from Win8 - dvd playback being one of them.

No point in wasting time and effort, I would just use VLC

VideoLAN - Official page for VLC media player, the Open Source video framework!

Obviously simply putting a movie in the DVD slot isn't working.  Windows Media Player says it's some alien form of life.  QuickTime wasn't happy because I wasn't hooked up to internet.  And I'd just as soon not spend the next week searching the Lenovo website...I figure a half hour is long enough to get no leads whatsoever. Help & thanks.

Answer:What do I need to do to play movies on my Y430?

I installed the K-Lite Codec pack and can now play any format of video. Codecs are instructions on how to play audio/video files. Give it a shot if you dont like it or it does not work out just uninstall it.

Yes, optical drives will still work in Safe Mode because they don't rely on third-party drivers, they use generic Microsoft drivers. So if your idea is to test it in Safe Mode then go ahead, and post back with the results.

I'm using the most updated version of DivX and it's codec, and I also downloaded Nimo's Codec Pack which has alot of codecs, but when I start a movie it will tell me the file isn't a valid avi or mpeg file. Do I need a specific program/codec to play these kinds of files?

Also, there was a post on here about a site that told you which movies you downloaded were legit and which were fake. If anyone knows the link to that site or a related on, please let me know.

Hi, I'm a newbie in this forum.

I've recently bought an NVIDIA FX6600 AGP 8x video card (replacing my old FX5200), and so far, it has satisfied my gaming experience. However, I can no longer play any of my video/movie files on my computer.

When I try to open and play any MPG/MPEG/AVI/etc files, WMP9 won't play these files and the system lags heavily - and when I check the memory usage, WMP9 uses about 99%. There aren't any error messages. So when I want to close WMP9, I have to terminate the prog using ctrl-alt-del.

Sidenote: I can play audio files perfectly, but not video files. And the computer can only play certain video files, for example, it can play the opening movie of "The Sims 2."

I downloaded DivX video codec, hoping that it would solve the problem, but it didn't. So I'm guessing that there's a hardware malfunction.

Answer:laptop to play HD movies

HULU? lol

yes I think that that would stream in HD but I would suggest at least 8 Mega Bits per second down stream internet for HD streaming, else you will end up buffering every 10 seconds. If you can't get 8megs, 4 megs will run but you may have to buffer after every break.

I have a pent 2 266 motherboard, win 98se, and have a creative lab 52x cd rom that was installed about a year ago. I try to run movies for my grandson (ernest movie for some). I get a error that d/;not ready and can't play movies. How can I get these movies to run on this computer?????????? thank you

Answer:can't play movies on computer

If your d: works in every other respect (that, can play music CD's, software etc) then it's possibly the format of the CD's you're trying to play. Have you played movies through this PC before? If so, what format were they in? That is, div-x, dvd, avi etc. As long as it's not dvd (because you would need a dvd-rom) you shouldn't have too many problems with the right codec installed. The codec is basically the instruction telling the pc how to display the (movie) file. If you bought the movie, it's probably dvd. If it was copied for you, it may be in one of the other formats. To check, insert the disc, open up my computer, right click d: and select explore. There may be more than one file in there but check for any file types that might say vcd, avi, mpg. I'm sure there's a few more file extensions to look out for but can't remember right now. If it is any of the latter file types you might need to install the codec to play it (if not already installed). You can enter div-x in your favourite browser and do some surfing. There is a free version of div-x available for download. Note though that it's adware but you can always install Ad-aware or Spybot to delete those bits of the program. Good luck!

I had this problem a while back and it was a driver problem. The 77.76 drivers are supposed to fix this.

But, the way I fixed it several drivers ago, was to go to the nVidia control panel, "Color Correction", "Apply Color Changes to", and in the first dropdown box below, change it from "Desktop" to "All". That fixed the problem for me. Hope this helps.

Hi, I never noticed this issue before. After playing a 1080p movie in VLC, after immediately closing that movie and clicking on another one, the movie will not instantly play.

It won't open to play in VLC. After 10 seconds the movie will play after clicking it but then clicking on another movie right after will not open for about 10 seconds. It happens with any of my 1080p movies in VLC.

Movies open instantaneously in Media Player Classic Home Cinema. What do you think is causing this? I uninstalled and reinstalled VLC. Please help.

I'm stumped on this one. I have a clean Win XP Pro on a lab machine and trying to get MPC [media player classic] as the default player for a DVD movie whenever one is inserted. So I set the correct option and choice of player via Win XP's applet, it all looks right, WMP has no defaults set except for .wmv, but I still get nothing.
The system acts like its trying to do the right thing - when DVD movie [this is retail movie] is inserted, the hard drive spins out something and the DVD lights up but no go. Nothing at all. If I open MPC, select the DVD and force it, it plays beautifully.

anyone solve this before? All my software is current... MPC is right up to date, so is XP Pro, everything...

any chance the firewall is blocking this? [ i use win xp default firewall at client level]

My recently purchased P70-A is well (great actually!) in all respects except it won't play Blu-ray films.
I've not tried burning a disc yet. DVDs are fine using the Toshiba Blu-Ray Disc Player software.

The help advises to not run other apps when watching Blu-ray and that's not the problem.
The version of player software supplied is: v and I can't spot any newer version.
I set the player to region B, for the UK sourced discs.

Symptoms: The player will launch a window on inserting a disc but then hang indicating it is playing a chapter lasting 30 seconds (copyright warning?) but there's no image or audio and the controls do nothing, with only the eject disc icon working.

I've tried 4 different known good discs and they all have the same result.

Anyone got any ideas to try?

Since doing a clean install of Windows 7 on my second internal hard drive (dual booting into either Vista or Windows 7), I am not able to view a DVD movie.  Inserting the DVD into one of my two DVD drives opens Windows Media Player to a black screen and nothing else happens.  Opening the chapter list on the right side shows me the chapters, but clicking on any of them does nothing.  Opening the drop-down DVD menu shows the Root Menu grayed out as are the next three items; the bottom four items are active.  The DVD plays as it should on both DVD drives when I boot the system into Vista Ultimate.  I'd appreciate suggestions on what to try next.

Hi everyone, I have looked around and can't find the answer to my problem! I don't want to have to reinstall my OS, please help!

The problem is I can't open any movie files, avi or mpeg.. I've tried several different files, ones that I know worked fine in the past. I have bsplayer, avipreview, windows media player installed, they all respond the same - i click on open movie and it gets stuck on "opening" and sucks up all my resources, never an error message, it just looks like it's trying to open but nothing happens. Then I have to "end task" - DivX player works, I installed it yesterday.

I have tried to uninstall and reinstall both BSPlayer and WMP, I have tried other versions of these players - same thing.

I'm going to install PowerDVD today and see what happens. Seems like a new install might work, since the new install of DivX player worked.

I don't know what could've caused the problem. It has been a couple of weeks since I tried to play a movie and a lot has happened to this machine in that time, installed kaspersky anti-virus, took that out and installed mcafee, installed roxio, updated video card drivers, installed directx9.0c, installed the new xvid codec, installed windows media player 10, and also have microsoft automatic updates going all the time.. that's all i can think of for now.
