Cannot explore drives

Question: Cannot explore drives

Hi;

I am using Win2000 SP4

Recently I have been having a few little problems with windows explorer and Internet Explorer. If I go to My Computer, the window will come up, but the little flashlight will show and it will never see my drives or control panel. Even if I right-click on start and go to explore, it will only show my files, but no drives. The drive shows up in the device manager and says it's working properly.

Also, in IE, if I click the dropdown arrow on the address bar, the hourglass comes up but it will never show the drop down list.

Any advice would be helpful. I was thinking of reformatting and reinstalling windows, but I would like to avoid that right now.

Thanks for any advice!

Ken

Preferred Solution: Cannot explore drives

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Recently, my dell600 with XP pro won't show me any of my drives. It's set up as a multi user but I'm the only one and I am the administrator in users in control panel. When I go to Explore (or Explore All) no drives are shown in the window, no CD, no DVD and part of my wireless network places are missing. Any suggestions?

Answer:Can't find drives in explore

I believe there is a program you can download and it has the facility to reshow your drives. Not sure but I think it is called Tweakui and maybe it is one of microsoft's toys.
From here: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/tweakui.htm
Also here:
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/tweakuixp.html

PS when installed look under My Computer>Drives and place a tick in them all.

Windows 7 slow to explore and most times not able to access NAS drives. I have a Mac that can access these same drives with no issue so I rule out the drives being at fault.

Answer:Windows 7 slow to explore NAS drives

Go into "Computer" and Map Network Drive. This usually works.

After cleaning up a horrible experience with a virus, I still have a problem remaining. When I goto "My Computer" and look for my ROM drives, they're not there in the section "Devices with removable storage". They used to be E: and F:. I can access them by running commands from the "Run" prompt, but cannot view any content. I've removed them from the "Device Manager" and rebooted. The results were that they still didn't show up on my computer but were reinstalled on the device manager. I also checked into the "NOIDE" claim but to no avail. I can see alot of info in the registry for the drives. I'm not sure what to change the settings to.
Any help would be appreciated.

Did you reinstall XP during the virus crisis ? If so,Microsoft says it might be an incorrect driver problem - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320553

I'm thinking my home computer is infected w/ something rather unseemly.
I'm running XP Home on my Gateway, w/ Internet Explorer 6. At first my desktop was replaced with a black screen containing a warning message about spyware, and a link to do something about it (I could still see all of my icons, but could not run anything). I tried using the task manager to get rid of it, but was unsuccessful. Then I downloaded and ran Spybot Search and Destroy, which captured a good bit and returned my desktop to normal. However, whenever I attempt to open anything on the desktop other than an application (Word, Excel, etc), I get an error message saying "Windows Explorer has experienced an error and is now shutting down . . ." I was at first still able to reach the internet, although my homepage and settings were all gone, but now I am getting the same error message for Internet Explorer as well.
Any ideas?

Question: Can't explore C:

In XP Media Center, I suddenly lost the ability to explore C:. When I go to Explorer or Power Desk Pro, C: appears with a +, but when I try to expand it, I get a blank field. I CAN see the contents of C: folders by clicking properties on an icon and clicking "Find Target". From there, I can see Program FIles by changing directories in the folder bar except for the root directory. Changing from C:/Program Files, where I can see the files & folders, to C: will produce a blank. I haven't found any viruses or spyware, but am still looking. Any ideas?

From the task manager window, I stopped a running process called i.explore.exe that was slowing the computer by consuming a lot of the cpu usage (more than 50%), then everthing went ok after that. My question is: What is that i.explore.exe I dared to delete in a desperate attempt to get my pc running fast again?

In the last 3 weeks, within a minute or 2 of opening any folder, the CPU usage for explorer.exe for my user name rockets to around 60% or so, and slows things to a crawl. I remember having this problem a year or so ago but cannot remember how I was advised to fix it. Terminating the process through Task Manager, and re starting it solves the problem.....until the next time I open a folder, and I'm back to square one again. I'd be eternally grateful for any words of wisdom as this is my first posting for help! Thanks

Question: 2 i explore.exe

Hello Guys,                 I just want to ask if anybody can give me a solution to this recent issue on my task manager regarding 2 iexplore.exe whenever i open up IE8 browser. And my CPU usage fluctuates to 100%. But if i close IE8 it goes back to normal. I've read some previous computerhope forums but mine may vary. Thanks

Answer:2 i explore.exe

With IE8, two instances of iexplore.exe are normal. On  atop of it, if you open an extra tab, you'll see another one. However, 100% of CPU usage is not normal.Download Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspxUnzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and double click on procexp.exe to run the program.Click on View > Select Colunms. In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.Go File>Save As, and save the report as Procexp.txt.Attach the file to your next reply.

Hi this may be the silliest question ever, but...... if websites appear in the history bar and if web addresses appear in the history of the address bar, there is no way they got there unless the addresses were entered by someone and the sites were visited - right?

Answer:[SOLVED] explore

Hello Alphalax

You can hide the 'Pictures' folder from the Navigation Pane by:
> opening up a window
> clicking on that 'Libraries' folder in the pane
> right clicking on the 'Pictures' folder and select Properties

In the properties window, unselected the checkbox that says 'Show in navigation pane'.

For the ones in your 'Favourites', you can just right click and select the delete option, for those.

I was about to reformat my computer after it's suffering from the same problem. I was infected with a bunch of spyware last night, got it all out with thanks to Kaspersky, Ad-Aware and Spybot. I had installed an XP Visual programme to make it look like Vista, ended up not liking it and decided to uninstall it, but when I restarted it, explorer.exe wouldn't run.

I found this page through google and just tried deleting the aforementioned registry keys but when looking through my registry those keys aren't there, but my explorer.exe still won't run or be found.

I'm on the same computer at the moment but on Windows Vista Beta 2 on a seperate HDD. Is there anything I could do from here to get it work? For some reason Vista won't let me access certain folders even though I'm on an Admin account.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you go to Task Manager and Click on the Details Tab, you should be able to see what programs and services are running that could be the cause. You do only have a dual core processor so don't expect explorer to idle at low CPU %.

I have used Netzero for over a year. 8 months ago a problem started, I could not access my account. I got a message; "Windows cannot find 'i explore.exe' ". After a great deal of attempts by "tech" support staff, I had to re install my XP disk.

Last month, the same thing started again. Although I could not get to my Net zero, I was able to download the free juno service and use it. That puzzled me sinc it is the same company as Net zero. I am now using a free service, "Metconnect", I am able to access Metconnect then click on the ie browser icon and go to the MSN home page. But, when I try to go to the Metconnect home page, I get the "Windows cannot find i explore.exe."

I would like to find a resolution beside the re installing of XP. I thank you in advance for any assistance.

Hi,

I am running windows xp SP2 and when i close down internet explore i get the classic error message. "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Now its not a major problem but its a bit enoying when it does it everytime you close IE down. Especially when you have 3 PC's doing the same thing.

Anyone know how to fix it?

Answer:Internet Explore

This is usually the result of a plugin error, but just in case:

Go to the Windows Update site and run it, just to make sure you're not missing anything.
Check your processes to see what's happening during the failure.
You can also try doing a system repair to repair Windows, as it is possible during the download of SP2 you got a minor corruption (which was common due to the mass amounts of downloads from the Microsoft servers).

I have loaded the patch for explore 11 KB30558515 and KB3065822 several times and then explore does not connect to the internet anymore.  I receive a error message that this page can not be displayed. This happens with any browser I use.  It
seems that port 80 is shut down for this reason. I am running win7 64 pro and home on two different PC's. I am also running Norton anti virus. can some one assist thanks.

It keeps closing and asking me for error report, almost everytime I either try to open a folder, or remove a shortcut from the start up.

Yesterday I unplug everything, went to safe mode and ran all programs like Uniblue registry booster 2, avast, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Spyboot search and destroy, and they all come out clean. Then I run the HijackThis and saw something I never seen, Trusted sites on the log, and I do not recall ever adding trusted sites.

The explorer shutting down many times didn't bug me much, until for some reason the windows firewall icon appeared with an X, even know I did not turn firewall off. As I saw that happening was when I decide to just unplug everything out, as I thought I might have gotten a virus, but as you see above, I run everything and it was all clean, but I'm still suspicious, specially with those trusted sites appearing on the log.

But I only use the HijackThis, to keep a eye on anything changing there, I never ever used this program to fix anything before, but I see many forum uses it, so as I know is an advance software, and is not to be used as the other ones to just run selecting and fixing, I thought I should ask for help. Maybe is nothing, but I have a feeling that is something here.

I see by reading the other thread, you guys use DDS, so I'm going fallowing that thread, and posting accordingly.

Hi, I can't get onto my account in win xp, it says explorer.exe Application error. The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000006). I can't even log on in safe mode. If I try and start up anything using task manager I simply get dwwin.exe and the same error. I can't start up my antivirus or anything to fix the problem, it wont even let me start up CMD. Any suggestions, I haven't backed up all my stuff, of course. If i try and start in safe mode it comes up with a blue screen before i get to the log on screen, but it goes too fast to read. Then it restarts. Any help would be appreciated.

Question: Windows Explore

I forgot, but how do you resize the icons in explore. Right now they are overlapping ?
OS XP Professional SP3.

Thanks,

Billjh

Answer:Windows Explore

What do you mean by resize? If you want to prevent them from overlapping you can activate "snap to grid"

1. Right-click on your Desktop. 2. Select, from at or near the top of the menu Arrange Icons By.
3. There will be one option called Align to Grid with/without a check mark next to it.
4. If there is a check mark next to it you will disablethe feature, and if there isn’t one you will enable it.
If you actually have so many icons that they can't fit you can indeed decrease their size, bearing in mind that this might ruin the look of some icons which were designed for a 32x32 square.

1. Right Click on the Desktop and Choose Properties
2. In the Properties Window click on the Appearance Tab at the top.
3. In the Appearance Window click on the button called Advanced.
4. In the Advanced Appearance Window choose Item: from the drop down list and choose Icon and you can choose desired Icon size.

By default many users will see 32 x 32 pixels but this can be changed to whatever you want.
In my opinion the best option is to reorganize things a bit so that you don't have all that clutter on your desktop, but that is a matter of preference. I personally keep projects I'm currently working on on my desktop and nothing else. Shortcuts to a dozen or so programs you use regularly can be useful, but you don't want too many. My point is either use the inbuilt organization structure or define your own, but keeping the system organized is ... Read more

Hello, first time posting here. I have the same problem as u27dd in another closed thread here: Can't explore expand or open dvd drive as a folder

When I click on my DVD drive to explore it as a folder, nothing happens. In fact when I insert a DVD the autoplay dialog pops up, and I pick "Open folder to view files", but that's the end of the excitement. Nothing happens. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, SP1.

Related confusing observations:I replaced the physical drive. No change.
I've deleted the device through Device Manager and allowed it to reinstall. No joy.
I can write and play DVDs just fine, provided I can initiate activity without Explorer.
PowerDesk, a 3rd party Explorer replacement, suffers the same problem.
Another product, ACDSee32 (very old jpeg viewer with an explorer-like interface) DOES show me the files on the drive, so I assume it uses different calls that don't hit this particular snag.
I can open and explore CDs in this drive just fine. The problem only seems to affect DVDs.
There are no UpperFilter or LowerFilter entries anywhwere in my Registry.

I can work around it somewhat, but it's frustrating. Any ideas?

Question: explore error

Hi, my Son is running windows 98se and he has a cable modem, along with AOL. When he shuts out of explorer, he is getting an error that says, Fatal exception OD has occurred at 2FA8:C165CB8C. The screen is blue at this time. Then when he is using other programs on his computer they won't let him X out of them either? You have to shut down the computer with an improper shut down, because it says that it has preformed an illegal operation and will be shut down. Then the close button won't allow you to click on it? He just put a new hard drive on his computer. I don't know if this has anything to do with it?? Can you please help me with this?? Thanks so much!!

Answer:explore error

Kinda tough to figure it out. You can try SFC (system file checker) and see if it finds any corrupted files. Another way might be to re-install W98 from Windows (on top of your existing install). Get to your desktop and pop in the W98 CD.

Problem 1

Running WinXP Pro, with explore v6 with most updates on system (within last month). When i go to do an update, the page opens, but the "scan" text that you click on to scan for updates never shows. In other words, it can never get ms update page to go to get what updates i need. In bouncing around in checking everything, i noticed that when i opend explore, clicked on help, and about explore..........i doesn't list what version or any of the other info. And if you click on the OK button to close....it doesn't. You have to use the x in box.

How do i get to updates??? Is there anyway to repair explore?? i really can't afford right now to rebuild windows (if you know what i mean )
Problem 2 (different computer)

Using outlook express.........when getting email, 95% of the time i can get it onto my computer. Sometimes depending on quanity or size of files it will time out. BUT i can't send email. The only way i can send email is to log onto my isp's home page and send it via the email page on the server. If the file size is too big, it just chokes.

Hardware: I am using linksys 4 port router/switch for my cable connection. WinXP Pro, most current windows updates.

Never had outlook act like this before, so any assistance is most greatly desired.

Just moved to win7 - have always used "right click - explore" ever since XP to access Windows Explorer so I can view folders in the left column, and files (and folders) in the right column. Tried to Google this and search this forum and I find postings saying there is no "explore option", that a "double click" on a folder or "my computer" opens the "Windows Explorer".

If that's the new do all "explorer", then can someone tell me how to view folders in the left column and files (and sub-folders) in the right column? And, for example, how would one move a folder to a parent folder without opening another folder window?

Answer:Where is right click - explore?

Hello Bytemon, and welcome to Seven Forums.

The Explorer option has been basically renamed to Open in A new window instead.

Open each Folder in the Same or Own Separate New Window

Here are some more related tutorials about the navigation pane that you might also find helpful for this.

Navigation Pane - Show All Folders

Navigation Pane - Automatically expand to current folder

Hope this helps,

Question: Explore Delay

I have a 2 minute delay when I attempt to expand a folder in Explore. Any ideas what is causing this problem.

Answer:Explore Delay

There are just so many possible reasons so many reasons and your description is so vague. Two whole minutes seems extreme. Try defragmenting, running a spyware remover, see if indexing is enabled. Disk Defragmenter is usually found in Start>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defgragmenter. I'd recommend Spybot Search and Destroy for spyware sweeping and to check if indexing, check your partition properties. The size of your partition also matters and how many subfolders are present, but two minutes, as I said before, seems way too long.

Look at your regional settings. I think its telling you that something is wrong with the region or date format.

Regional settings is under Control Panel. How you get there depends on your version of Windows, and you don't give that info.

Hi.There has been problems with Flash player on Vista that has been causing computers to crash.Normally when they try to update to the latest version of flash they get problems that so far have not been resolved.probably not your problem but thought that I would mention it as you are not getting many replies. Maybe download and run Malwarebytes free edition update it first. That should find anything that your security programs may have missed.Maybe try a disk check.Right click C Drive.properties. Tools.Check now.And tick both squares. It will start automatically the next time you reboot your computer. It will take about an hour or so to complete.Any problems it finds it should repair.

Internet explorer can navigate around the web but firefox cant connect.

Example:
I can open internet exploror and go to google.com
but if i try to do that with FF i get
Unable to connect

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at Google.

* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Answer:IE can explore the web but FF says no connection.

well, turn off your firewalls temporarily and see if that fixes it. If it does, then FF somehow isn't permitted to get to the web.

If it doesn't work, make sure the options in FF are configured correctly, or it could just be a bad install. If it is, download it again and install it again.

When I open explore (right click on start and select explore), my C drive (only local drive) fully expands and it drives me crazy. All my information is out on network drives so I have no reason to have the C drive opening as it does.

I have see posts about adding shortcuts to the desktop and such but I don't like having ANYTHING on my desktop.

Thanks,
Chris

Answer:How-To Minimize C: in explore?

Hold the Windows key down and tap the E key.

Some mouse software has the ability to set "Explore My Computer" to one or more of the mouse buttons. I have my middle mouse button set to open Windows Explorer.

If your mouse software does not have this selection available, you can use this software to do it. It runs in addition to your mouse software.

This program has caused some serious problems on my computer. It runs itself using some hidden program and it only shows up in my Window's task manager in processes. However, everytime that I try to end the process, it ends my desktop too. I'm pretty sure that it has something to do with some spyware, but I can't find it in my computer. I recently deleted some sypware from "internet axis" and some other bogus company, but i think that it's still messing with my computer. It causes the program to take up 99% of my CPU sometimes, and makes other programs REALLY slow or freeze up. It also sometimes prevents me from getting on Internet Explorer because it some how sets up a firewall. Now recently it's changed my desktop apperance (I can only use this "modified theme" and no changes ever take effect to change it back to normal) and all these icons for casino's and porn keep showing up, it's pretty bogus I've tried system restore several times, but it won't resotre my system anymore, it says that there was an error and that I should choose a different date, except no date works! I was hoping there was someone out there who had a clue about what I should do. Thanks a ton!

I'm running Windows XP SP2. The other day my PC started to produce an eror message of the type "application encountered error and needs to close" whenever I try to access Internet Explorer, My Computer or Control Panel. I've tried sfc /scannow without success, also repaired windows from the original installation and SP2 disks from which I produced a slipstream install disk. Curiously the PC behaves itself in Safe Mode. I will probably end up doing a clean install but before I do this, does anyone have any idea what may be wrong?

Answer:explore needs to close

Does this help Phil click here

Question: Window Explore

Please help me I need some to tell me how to remove a virus from my computer. I can not get the the internet page show up at all. I message error comes up saying window explore busy.Moderator Edit: Moved topic to the more appropriate forum and added a topic descriptor. ~ Animal

Answer:Window Explore

You will need to use a different medium other than the internet to download some programs to identify what malware if any is causing the problem. Two programs you need is Super Antispyware and Hijack This. Use a flash drive or CD to download the programs to and then install on your computer.http://www.superantispyware.com/http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/hijackthis_sfx.phpRun Super Antispyware in safe mode and allow it to quarantine whatever it finds. The instructions for using Hijack This and saving a log and posting are in the link below.http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/34773/preparation-guide-for-use-before-using-malware-removal-tools-and-requesting-help/You may also want to install another browser such as Firefox. You may be able to use it to access the internet.

My CPU usage is at 100 %. My of the usage is for something called Iexplore . What is this program ?

Can I shut it off ?

I would appreciate any help.

Thanks

Answer:Cpu Usage And I Explore

Iexplore can be innocent, or it can be malicious. Can I shut it off ?Yes. If you open the tesk manager (ctrl+alt+del) and click on the processes tab, you can highlight Iexplore and click on End Process. However this will not cure your ills.I urge you to immediately get this checked out by our team in the High Jack This! forum here at Bleeping Computer, because you may be infected with a virus or a worm, and it may spread to others in your address books. Here is my HJT referal canned speach:For help with removing your infection I would like to refer you to the Highjack This (HJT) forum here at BleepingComputer.com: First: Read the Preparation Guide found HERE. It is very important that you follow ALL of the instructions found within. (There are many important steps in this guide that may clean your computer.) Second: Post your system information along with a brief description of the problems you are having, and your HJT log in the HJT forum found HERE.NOTE: Please, after you post your HJT log DO NOT make another post in the HJT forum until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. The first thing they look for, when looking for logs to reply to, is 0 replies. If you make another post there will be 1 reply. The team member glancing over the replies might think someone is already helping you out and will not respond. So, just make your post and let it sit there until a team member responds. The volunteers who work that forum are very busy, so please be patient... Read more

Answer:Internet Explore is having its way

Please do not double post. I closed your other thread.

Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an o... Read more
