Preferred Solution: open WPD. in WORD?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: open WPD. in WORD?

Should work, depending on the versions (of WP and Word)

In Word, Open - File of type - WordPerfect

You may have to install the converters if they were not originally installed, it should prompt you for the install disc in that case.

Is there a program that converts files from either of those formats to the regular .doc that micrsoft office would read? It's really annoying not having a working cd key for office so I need something that can change it so I can send files to teachers etc and they can still read them

Answer:Convert Abi Word/Open Office to Microsoft Word compatible

The good new is yes...But, first: Verify that the converter is not already installed.

To see a list of installed converters that you can use to save documents, click Save as on the File menu and look at the available choices in the Save as type box.
To see a list of installed converters that you can use to open documents, click Open on the File menu and look at the available choices in the Files of type box.
If Word does not have your file format converter available there is additional good news...

Connect to the internet, Open Word, click on help, type converters and click search, then click Obtain file format converters and then click either one of the hyperlinks microsoft office resource kit or microsoft office.

NOTE: once you have the converter loaded word has a built in Batch Conversion Wizard click on help, search for "file conversion" and click Convert Documents then click convert several docs at once and follow the instructions

When I send some friends a password protected word document created in Word 2010 they can't open it using word 2007 which is compatible with docx by using the correct password. I have no choice but to send as a Word doc instead of docx so they can open it.

Word 2007 User 1: Word launches no password box no error messages just the blue screen.

Word 2007 User 2: Gets the error message: ?Word cannot open this file . The encryption type used is not available. Contact the author of the file. More encryption types are available in the High Encryption Pack.?

Therefore I suspect some kind of encryption pack must be installed. I believe the user 1 has XP and user 2 has Win 2000 pro. are using XP. Do you know where these encryption packs are available? The other possibility might be for me to reduce the encription level when I create a password protected docx but I have no idea how to do that.

Is there a solution to this problem?

Kind Regards

Answer:Word 2007 Can't open encrypted docx from Word 2010

Hi Chris,

I've been looking at this for a while, but cannot find an answer.

The only thing I can come up with, is an alternate suggestion, which I am sure you have probably thought of : use something like 7ZIP to encrypt the file, and then send that to your friends.

I am using Microsoft word starter 2010.When I save a document created,I can see it and open it in 'recent documents'.However when I go into my ordinary saved documents folder and try to open it,nothing happens?

Answer:Cannot open word documents in Microsoft Word starter 2010

Try one or both of these:Right click on the icon and select 'Open'.Right click on the icon and select 'Open With" and select Word or Word 2010 from the list. If you also check off "Always use this program" and it works, you have fixed the problem since it may have been trying to open it with another program and it could not. Now you have designated the default program for that file type (.doc or .docx).You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I have installed MS Office Home and Student 2007 on my Dell Inspiron 1720 running Vista Home Premium. Previously I used MS Works that came pre-installed any e-mail with a Word attachment just opened when I clicked it.
Now when I get e-mails with any Word attachments I am unable to open the attachments without first saving them to the desk top, then opening Word 2007, then opening the document from the Word 2007 menu.
Similarly with all my old documents I have to go through the same long winded procedure to open them
Is there a simple way to cure this??. I'm not a tech whizz but if the cure is simple I can give it a go

I have a MAC Word file (I think with some pictures in it) that I can't open in my Windows Word 2010 program. I get a message saying there's a problem with the MAC Word file content. If I could just get a copy of it or perhaps just a pdf file, that would suffice. Help! Is there a charge for this?

Answer:Need to open a MAC Word file in my Widows Word 2010.

Do you have a Mac available to open the file? If so, does it actually open on the Mac? Perhaps it's corrupt and won't open on any machine. If you can open it on a Mac, there may be a Save option to save it as a PDF.If all else fails, you could download a copy of OpenOffice and see if that application can open it. I just bought this laptop, which comes with Office 2010 Starter. For those who don't know, the "Starter" means that you have to buy the product key in order to activate the Office programs. Well, I have lots of documents in Word 2007, but I don't have the installation disk for Office 2007 anymore. I also have plenty of documents in Word 2000, and I do have the installation disk for Office 2000. Will 2000 work okay with 2007 stuff? Thanks for any help.

Answer:Can Word 2000 open Word 2007 documents?

They don't go 'backwards,' meaning that you will need to get a compatibility pack. Here's a link.

LOL I have the same problem, but I downloaded Open and found it to address 99% of my needs. Free and it runs Office, Excel, Powerpoint, etc. They aren't exactly perfect but if you start a doc in one of these, you can finish it up in the MS Office version. Best of all, it was free. Good luck! Glad to be able to help and give back a little to this fantastic community that has saved me TONS of $$ and time (the gray hairs I blame on the computer!!)

My wife has a problem where certain Word 2000 files open as Read Only in Word XP.These files are standard letters that are opened, a few changes to dates etc are made, then printed and resaved. The network she is on has recently been updated to Windows 2003, and Windows XP Pro, with Office XP.After renaming the offending files & the old ones cannot be deleted until the next day.Anyone any idea what's happening here?

Answer:Word 2000 files open as Read Only in Word XP

I presume this happens at work but it sounds like the Network Administrator has set the security for the storing folder to "Read Only". Your wife needs to check with the IT department if she hasn`t already done so. Alternatively the "certain" files she opens have been turned into templates and made read only to protect them. Tell us exactly how she accesses the files and I can probably tell you what the problem is.

I am running Office 2003 in WinXP Pro (version 2002) SP2 on a Sony Vaio laptop, model VGN-TX610P.

Lately my computer has been running slowly so I have been trying to get rid of things like startup processes and other junk by going through msconfig and running ccleaner. I think something may have caused an error in Word.

I cannot open a Word file by clicking on it in Explorer, My Documents, etc. Clicking on the file causes Word to open, Norton Anti-Virus to scan for viruses, and then... nothing. No file is open. There is no new document. Only Word is open.

I can open documents fine by CTRL-O'ing in Word, but then when it is open I cannot use the mouse or the vertical scroll bar.

Since I use Word as my Outlook message editor the same thing happens.

Please help!

Answer:Cannot Use Mouse In Word, Cannot Open Word By Double-clicking

Using CCleaner, without being extremely careful, can often cause important files, etc., to be deleted causing some applications not to function properly.
Your best plan of action would be to uninstall Office completely, then re-install it. I would also spot check a .doc to be sure the association is correct.

Hi All,

I work on a web application that has Excel and Word documents in it.

At the moment when a user opens these documents in IE9 they get presented with a dialog box asking:

What do you want to do with "filename"?

The user is presented with Open, Save and Save As as the options.

Unlike previous versions of IE there is no check box to tick to remember the user's choice so it comes up every time.

I really need to get rid to this box. Does anyone know how to disable it?

Got a problem with Word and Excel 2007.

Both programs open ok (under 2 seconds), so no problems there.

The problem is opening the program by means of opening a document. It takes about 1 minute

Exactly the same thing with both Word and Excel.

Has anyone got a solution? Surely there must be a quick little registry tweak to sort this out?

Other info:
Outlook 2007 works ok, no delays
Windows XP works ok

When I double click on Word documents, a Window Installer box opens and says 'preparing to install' with a cancel button. Then, a Microsoft Office Edition 2003 box opens:
Installation Error:File not Found

A required installation file SKU112.CAB cound not be found
It then asks if installed from a cd to insert it or if downloaded from the internet to browse your system and find it. I don't have any Office 2003 cd's. The cd's I have that I think are for my Word documents are Microsoft Works Suite 2000.
My last year vacation pictures will not open. When double-clicking on them, an Adobe Photoshop Album window opens with the words 'failed to load photo'.
My memory about a year ago was about half free. It is now showing I have 2 GB.
I tried going back and restoring my computer in hopes of being able to access my pictures. I've ran spybot. That's all I knew to do. I have Windows XP Home Edition 2002. ~tmcc

When i create and save a word document(.doc) and if I reopen it from windows explorer or from the start menu and then documents. They will reopen in Word pad. Then the format is all screwed up. In order for me to open it, I 1st have to start Word, then go to "File" then "Open" Even though the documents are saved as .doc . the seem to have the word pad logo or icon beside the file name. Only the backup copy of the document automaticly made by word show the Word Logo or icon beside the file name and extention.

How do change it to open only in Word.

windows 98 and word2000

Answer:Saved Word Docs open in Word Pad

In Explorer, navigate to a .doc file, and right click (you may need to hold Shift when you right click)

Select Open With

Select Word as the program to open with, and also select "always use this program..."

Its only your file association that needs renewing.

I have a friend how has a problem with Word 2003. It could be happening in Excel and PowerPoint, but she doesnít use those so we donít know.

Word opens fine, and if you find a file you want to open through My Computer or Windows Explorer, and you double-click it the file opens quickly.

However, if you attempt to open a document through the following method you run into a problem. If you open Word, click the Open button or go File >> Open, and than click the Look in: drop down arrow to browse to a different location it takes between 7 and 10 seconds for the menu to drop down. This happens every time when you first attempt to do this after opening Word. If I leave Word open and do it again itís fine (if I remember correctly).

The problem persists, however, as I choose a new drive to look at and begin double-clicking on folders to open them. Iíll get a 7 to 10 second delay attempting to open some folders, and virtually no delay when attempting to open others. For the most part, however, there is a delay. Just like I stated above with the Look in: drop down menu, however, once Iíve gone into a folder this way it opens up very quickly from that point on, as long as I donít close Word. If I close Word the problems start up again.

I tried a number of things to resolve the issue. I started Word in safe mode and that didnít work. I tried turning off DDE something or other by going Control Panel >> Folder Options >> File Types, choosing DOC, clicking Advan... Read more

Couple of issues here.... help!

How can I just click on the word or excel document from gmail or anywhere and it just open up instead of opening up the program to open within?

I've got some strange behavior going on with .doc files at the moment. Whenever I try to open a .doc file from Windows Explorer or a desktop shortcut, Word opens with the error message "Word experienced an error trying to open the file. Try these suggestions. * Check the file permissions for the document or drive. *Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space. *Open the file with the Text Recovery converter."

After clicking OK, the .doc file then opens in Word, apparently with no problems at all (I can edit, save, etc.). So basically the error message seems to be wrong, since the file does open properly.

I can open .doc files from within Word (File -> Open) with no error message.

The issue is more of an annoyance than anything else (since the file eventually opens up just fine), but I imagine it'll just become more irritating as time goes on. Any suggestions on how to resolve it? I've been poking around in the Folder Options -> File Types in Explorer without a clear sense of purpose.

I'm running MS Word 2003 SP3 on Windows XP Service Pack 3. If you need any further info, please let me know.

Thanks for your help!

I've got a diskette that I put some info on over three or four years ago, that I need to open. Unfortunately, I used Word Perfect at the time, (can't remember which version, probably old at the time), and I desperately need to open it, but MS Word 2002 doesn't seem to be able to do it. At the time on the computer I had then, whatever version of MS Word I had, to the best of my memory, would open it with no problem. I think Word 2002 has a converter, but I it doesn't work or at least I can't get it to. I thought it was automatic, for that matter.

Now all I get when I open it is mostly a bunch of Y's and O's. Since I don't have Word Perfect anymore, does anyone have any idea how I can get it to open?

I am having issues with Word and Outlook 2003. I just upgraded them from 2000 and now I am running into a couple of issues. Help!

Microsoft Word 2003

- Can't highlight or select an area on my page with my mouse. I can use my keyboard, but that becomes quite annoying as you can imagine.
- Can't open Word document attachments only. I can open excel, pdf, etc..., but not Word.

I have restarted my pc, reinstalled office 2003, erased the profile, removed the 11.0\Word\Data registry and no luck. Any solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:Can't highlight in Word 2003 and Outlook 2003. Can't open Word 2003 attachments.

Question: Word Won't Open

I have Microsoft 2000 installed on my computer and I got a virus. I got rid of the virus but when I tried to open Word 2000 It won't open. Excel, PowerPoint, Access and the rest will open but not Word. I uninstalled the whole program and reinstalled it and Word is the only one that won't open. Is there a Microsoft fix for it?

I cannot open IE7 on my XP machine. IE has been working fine for months. When I doubleclick on it, the hourglass comes up and sits there forever. Same happens when I use IE7 without add ons. - Restarting computer doesn't help. No new software was installed. Now, here is the funny part: two days ago my MS WORD 07 stopped working - same problem - double click and nothing. All other MS products - Powerpoint, excel... work.
I have McAfee and I also ran spybot - nothing found. Any suggestions?

Try finding and deleting the file. Then reboot and try again. I had exactly the same problem yesterday and after defragging 40 Gb disk and screaming the place down I finally found this tip on the net - tried it in desperation and it worked!!!!

My laptop hasn't had internet access for two months (I just moved from AZ to FL) and Microsoft Word was working just fine. I recently got internet access (Through Embarq in FL) and now I can't open Word or any of my Word Documents.
When I try - it flashes a quick outline of the window then it dissappears. *Crash*
If I RUN 'winword /a' a box pops up that tells me that Windows cannot find the application.
Word is definetly on my computer, its in C:

I've tried temporarily killing Norton to start it up- No luck
I've tried holding the shift key to start it- No luck.
Can anyone help? I've got documents on there that I NEED to access.

Answer:HELP- 'Word' won't open!!

Hi have you tried to either repair Office ( in Word click Help > Detect and Repair ) or re-install Office? ( dependant on if you have the Office CD as it may need files to fix a possible corrupted Office/Word ) As this is your best option.

The below is a quick fix option if you dont have the CD, in installing the Office Viewer packages to allow you to view the docs and print but you cannot edit

Question: can't open Word

I've had problems with Word recently. When scanning my PC Norton found 4 bad files, quarantined 3 and wasn't able to delete or quarantine the 4th. (I went to Symantec and did everything suggested to exercise the nimba virus.) I've scanned my PC numerous times since and it never finds the 4th file. I reloaded Word today; I was able to open it once and now I can't. One time today I got a message that said something about closing Explorer, which is odd because I wasn't even connected to the internet.

Last week I once got a message that said I didn't have enough disk space to open word, when nothing else was open.

Can something be running that I'm not aware of?
If so, how do I find out?

Thanks for any help you can provide. I am at my wits end!

Answer:can't open Word

Can you please try opening Word and telling us exactly what happens NOW and tell us the exact error messages? Sorry, but the ones you're giving us are pretty unspecific.

The one you got last week (out of memory) is classic of the Nimda virus.

If you can't delete that file while in Windows, try hitting Start-shutdown-Restart in MS DOS mode and deleting it from there. If the path to the file is, for instance, C:\my documents\filetodel.doc, then type the following at the C:\ prompt:

del c:\my_doc~1\fileto~1.doc

and hit Enter.

Hello to all. Word won't allow me to open any URLs from the document. When I click on the link and hit CTRL, or right click on the URL and select "Open Hyperlink" I get this error message:
"The operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." I basically have to resort to copy + paste.

Where would I go to change this restriction? I don't even recall placing it in the first place. I am also the admin of this computer as well. I'm using XP Professional and Word 2002. TIA.

Answer:Can't open URL from Word

Found a similar problem by searching Google. Are you using Spybot?

Q. When I go to Tools, Internet Options in Internet Explorer, I get a box called Restrictions with the message "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." This is my home PC, and I don't have a system administrator. How can I fix this?

A. Spybot Search and Destroy does have a feature that will lock this setting. It is designed to keep your computer from having the Web browser hijacked by spyware. Open the program and go to the Immunize icon. At the bottom of the page, uncheck the box that says Lock IE start page against user changes.

Exit Spybot and close any open Explorer windows. Restart Internet Explorer, and the Tools menu should work properly.

If you are not using Spybot, your problem might be related to a problem referenced in the Microsoft support article located at

With Word closed:

Search for and delete (or rename) a system file or files called ""

Then restart Word. If this file becomes corrupt all manner of errors occur. It will create a new clean one if the file is not found. If you have ever run Word successfully then the file will exist.

When I try to open word (office 2007, windows vista 64x, HP PC) the normal initial screen appears without a flashing cursor. The computer stays locked in process, i.e., the hour glass or circle icon that indicates "in process" stays on the screen and never stops. If I try to type a work or click on the screen, it goes white and the office word screen is seen in the background. It stays like this until I close it then it says an unknown error has occurred.

Excel copied over fine but the word doc wouldn't. It wouldn't open becuase the path couldn't be found or name was invalid. Couldn't copy and paste it either - got 99.9% there and then reported an I/O device error.Tried this with 3 different memory sticks and always the same result. Tried it with just the word on a 1GB stick.I appreciate at this point someone might suggest changing usb ports etc but I've tried this without success and why should it copy the excel doc over but not the word one?I then took the memory stick to work and copied the word doc to a cd. Managed to transfer the doc from the cd to machine B but I still get the message that the document name or path file are invalid! I KNOW the doc name is not invalid; it consists of 5 words with no punctuation or other symbols - all letters in title case. Answer:Can't open word doc through XP

Can you open them from within Word? If so then you probably have a file association problem. Right click on the file you want to open and select "Open With..". In the box that opens select "MS Word" and put a check mark in the box that says "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" and then "Okay" your way out. Test and let us know.

Answer:can everyone open my word doc?

Hey there!

I am prompted to save it to disk or open it from the location. If you did the document in 97, 2000, or XP, you shouldn't really have any issues.

If there are any issues, it would likely be an issue with the user's settings, which you can't do much about if it's open to the public.

Question: Cannot open word

Please help!!

I'm not terribly computer literate - but I write for a living and am currently having major problems accessing my word docs.

I have Microsoft word 2003 xp

This morning I received a document from a friend, she had proof read some articles that I'd sent her and had highlighted some points. She initially sent me a document in word 2007, but I had trouble opening it (it did not show as a word doc) then she saved it to 2003. I opened it no problem, but thereafter, I have not been able to open any other word doc - including, most frustratingly, my novel (all 43,287 words of it so far) I can't begin to explain how annoying this is.

Every time I try to opne a word doc two boxes open - one says "The command cannot be performed because a dialogue box is open. Click OK and close dialogue box to continue." and the other just says "preparing to install". So, I click OK, but the 'preparing to install does nothing, at all. So I click either "cancel" or the little close box and then the whole Word program shuts. This happens regardless of what document I try to open.

I've tried to restart and I've run all the pending up dates on my computer. I've done some research and some suggestions have been to remove the 'offending' document from my start program. But I have no idea whatsoever what this offending document might be....

I really really really need to get this sorted out and would so appreciate any help you might be able to of... Read more

Answer:Cannot open word

Hi Sue. In your situation I think your best bet is to do a system restore to restore the settings and configuration to a previous date. Start-all programs - accessories - system tools-and open System restore. Follow the instructions and on the calender it provides you and select a previous date that is highlighted or in bold. The restore usually only takes a couple minutes and you will not lose any of your documents.

The only way I can get any MS office programs to open is to right click and choose the "open with" option. I check the box to Use as default, but they still won't open the next time.
I tried run > winword /r to reset word, but that didn't help either.
All the icons are the same, a little blue chemistry beaker.
In properties, the type of files say they are, "FFV files (docx), FFV files (xlsx), etc".
How do I get these files to open the normal double click way?

Answer:Excel and Word files will not open in Excel and Word

Have you tried repairing the Office installation (via Start > Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change > Repair)?

Aside from that if the file types are "FFV files (docx), FFV files (xlsx), etc", that suggests you've installed some other software that has taken over the file associations. In that case, you might consider uninstalling that software; otherwise you'll need to reset the file associations, by right-clicking each Office file-type (docx, xlsx, etc.) and using Open With>Choose default program to re-associate them with the correct Office application.

If I write any document I have to do the same step (once I save and close) of opening Word first, open file to view my document; if not what I get is all the crazy symbols and stuff :confused . Here is and example of what I get.

Thanks for the help

Answer:Word document won't Open

Hi, You have to change your file associations.

In Microsoft Windows XP
In My Computer or Windows Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the File Types tab.
In the Registered file types list, click the file type you want to open with a different program, and then click Change. (Look for DOC)
In the Open With dialog box, select the program you want to use (Microsoft Word), and then click OK.
In the Folder Options dialog box, click OK.Click to expand...

I have a bunch of word documents, that won't open up. When I try to open them up an error message saying "Word cannot open document: user does not have acess priviledges" pops up. I save anything in the file in which they are located that new document, in turn, becomes the same as the rest. Gotta bunch of files I'd really like to open but can't.

Answer:Can't open word docs.

What folder are you storing these documents?

You have MS Word installed? If so, uninstall it...then reinstall it. Then apply any critical updates from Microsoft Update.

Don't take this the wrong way, but since we really don't know that it is your document, we can't help. The rules of this forum, as stated here, don't allow for the posting of hacks or password cracking schemes. This is done to protect the intellectual property of others.Someday you may have a document that you want password protected. How happy would you be if a cracking scheme was widely published in Help Forums such as this one?

I was trying to delete an .exe file, and wasn't able to. So I went to change it (I'm not that good with computers, obvious and the window opened that asked what program to open it with, I hit word and it must have had that darn box checked at the bottom that says "always open files like this with this program" or something like that. So now all .exe programs open with word. My system restore was turned off so if that would have helped that is a moot point. I have a p4 2.6 running XP. I'm hoping there is a simple fix for this. I did go through previous problems in the forum and found this link which gives a zip file to restore .exe files. However, my computer will not allow this zip file to replace or be added to my registry.
Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers in advance for any help.

Hyperlinks inserted in Word documents either I create or were created by someone else and emailed to me, will no longer open as of a few days ago. They are active websites that can be opened in a browser that I can copy & paste to open. When I clink on a link in a doc it comes up with a new window that says "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." Some links when I click to open just don't do anything even when I do control & click or 'open hyperlink'. This is a personal laptop and I can't think of any changes I may have made that would cause this to happen. Any suggestions?

Answer:Hyperlinks won't open in Word.

That error typically occurs after you uninstall Google Chrome. It leaves associations in the registry incorrect. If that applies to you, do this:1. Re- install Google Chrome2. Make Google Chrome as the default browser & hyperlinks should open in Chrome.3. Now set your preferred browser as the default instead of Chrome and hyperlinks should open in that preferred browser.

When I try to open word the screen freezes and nothing happens except that the word 2000 message box stays in the middle of the screen. I therefore cannot access any of my documents. I have tried typing winword.exe /a into 'Run' and word then works fine but when I return to normal use the problem persists.

Answer:word 2000 will not open
