Question: It is now safe to turn of your comp.

whenever i turn off my computer, it always say that. how can i make it not appear when i shut down my computer? thanks

Preferred Solution: It is now safe to turn of your comp.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: It is now safe to turn of your comp.

1) Check that your system is ACPI compliant
- in "Device manger" expand the "computer" icon and check if states Advanced Power management

2) Test in safe mode - If the problem is not present in safe mode, then mostlikely the issue is releated to a 3rd party application hanging the system during the shut down process.

If the problem is still present in safe mode, then you may need to toggle some settings in the BIOS (power management etc..)
or you may need to update the system BIOS

my computer do not turn off if I'm connected to the internet during start up. When I discconnect to the internet and start up my comp, then it will be able to shut down properly later on.
It will show as "shutting down" (something like that)nd will just stay there forever.

Answer:Comp don't turn off

Hi What OS are you running?

Have you tried any of the following:

On Windows XP try running windows defender in case of spyware etc, or try one of the others searchanddestroy etc.

Check you have all latest updates.

Make sure you have no programs running when you shut down. try doing control + alt +delete viewing task manager and then seeing if you have any hi mem usuage programs running.

Has everything closed properly before you shut down?

Has this problem arisen recently and may you have installed something to cause it.

The other day my comp was on and then i went in the other room and came back and it was off and something smelled burned.

the fans were spinning on the PSU but then stopped. So I thought it was a psu failure. I bought a new PSU and that won won't work either.

I tested both PSUs by themselves and they both work when you do that little paperclip test with the green and black pins on the 24 pin mobo connector. the lights turn green the fans spin. So its not the PSU right?

Is it the motherboard thats broken, the CPU? How do you test each part to see if its broken? remember the computer wont turn on so im talking about testing them to see if they are getting power or working physically.

Question: Comp won't turn on

First things first, i'd like to say hi! First time posting here.
Now on to my problem. a guy at work asked me to take a look at his comp for him. I got it home and it won't power up. I unplugged everything but the mobo and tried to turn it on. No dice. The light on the mobo is on, which i assume would mean it is getting power. I switched out the power supply. Still nothing. Am i correct in assuming that eather the MOBO or the CPU has gone bad?
PS. if this is in the wrong forums please move. i wasn't sure which forum to post it in.

My computer is all AOpen parts running on Windows ME. It was acting funny one day and the next it wouldn't start up. When I press the power button the processor fan starts to run for a few seconds, then the CPU speaker beeps a few times and the whole thing just shuts back off. I'm thinking its the power supply, I've had that problem before on a different comp but it was different symptoms. I have a few spare power supplies from my comp graveyard I dont know if they're interchangable or how to tell if they are. Help?

Ok so i just went through 18 pages of threads and read a bunch of reviews. From what i have read the best in speed and security while being free for an anti virus is Avast, Avira, BitDefender, and AVG. While also using malewarebytes and the windows firewall, which of those 4 should i be using with my home computer? which is only used for just going on email and everyday searching no games or anything special

Answer:trying to keep the comp safe

My opinion, and only my opinion. Avast with the Custom install option. Installing only the options that correspond to your PC usage. Throw in ThreatFire with the Sensitivity Level turned to High. This will help supplement not only Avast but the Windows FW as well. Though you may\will need to respond to some ThreatFire pop-ups until it learns the software on your PC.I use Firefox with NoScript as well. You do`t mention if you are using Malwarebytes free or paid version. If you are using the paid version then it`s real time protection will replace the need for ThreatFire.Have heard good things about Avira. Have always heard BitDefender was a bit resource intensive and AVG is becoming a bit bloated.

hey, i just finished putting together a pc for my grandpas office, ive checked like 81239812 times, everything is connected properly. When i hit the power button, nothing happens. Not even an attempt to boot, no fans turn on, nothing.

any suggestions??

Answer:New comp wont turn on

Don't worry this happens all the time! Remember to power off before disconnecting anything. Do you get any beeps? 1 beep is good - more beeps is bad and can tell you what is going wrong.
First take out the motherboard and make sure that there not too many stand-offs; any extras can short out the board.
If this is OK, check you have all the front panel connections on the right pins - an LED connection on the reset button for example will stop it booting.
If this still does not sort it, disconnect everything and take out all the cards except the front panel and power supply cables. Does it boot? Reconnect one thing at a time and that will tell you what is causing the problem.

Question: Comp wont turn on!

I was having issues with my ram. Would run i stick fine, but when i put two in, the comp would freeze at random places. So flashed bios and attemped to tweak ram settings in bios. This still didnt not help me. I shut down the comp and took one of the sticks out, thus leaving a 512 stick; however, in the process i unplugged the heatsink cable that connects to the mobo (was in the way). After i took the one stick out, i pushed power, and the lights, fans, etc. came on but for only split second. I then realized that the heatsink cable was not attached to the mobo. So i connected this back and pushed power, but nothing happened. Now the comp wont turn on at all. *note: the heatsink still came on when i pushed the power button even thou the cable was disconnected (the heatsink gets power from a 4-pin connector). A week ago i bought a 480 Thermaltake Silent Purepower psu, doubt that could be the problem. Any suggestions?

Answer:Comp wont turn on!

You could of done 1 of 3 things:
Burnt you power supply out (unlikely)
Had a static discharge while removing and reconnecting parts
Or Everything is not plugged in right.

To see if your PS is still good. Take a PaperClip and connect the "green" wire port on the mobo connection, to any "black" wire port.
Plug some fans in, and turn it on. If it is bad it will not run, if it is good the fans will spin like they should.

If the PS is good, make sure everything is seated correctly. Double check.

If everything is seated, maybe you had an ESD(static discharge) on your board. the only option is to buy a new mobo, maybe other components as well.

Also for future reference: Run MEMTEST86 when you install a new stick of ram, to make sure it runs 100% error free.

Well basically a few days ago my computer screen would go black in the middle of playing a game and it would force me to restart my computer because I couldn't do anything. I thought it was a bug with titan quest since it hadn't happened in half life 2 or WoW. Sadly this morning after 5 minutes of playing WoW the same thing happened so I restarted and tried half life 2. The game almost immediately did the same thing and when I tried to restart my computer won't even turn on properly. It sounds like it is running fine but I get no picture and the 3 lock lights dont come on when I try.

My luck with my computer has been nothing but bad in the past year. I am now on my third hard drive, 3rd Graphics card, 2nd motherboard, and almost needed a new sound card. If anyone is able to help me, please do because all of this money I have pretty much put down the drain has led me to think I should just forget about fixing it and sell the parts and spend my money on something else.

The mb green led is green all the time, so dont think its anything to do with electricity.

Any ideas?

Im thinking that maybe power supply? But its a long shot, since it worked fine with my old comp

Hi, a few weeks ago I came home a few hours after having used my computer in the morning to find it off. It would not turn on. I unplugged everything and took off the side panel and found the PSU still warm. I read around on similar postings on this forum and decided it was my PSU. I bought a new one. Still didn't turn on. However, the f-lock led on my keyboard was lit up when the switch on the PSU was flipped on. So I e-mailed my motherboard company, Epox. I recieved some directions that would get rid of electricity still in the board such as holding the power button down for 10 seconds, setting the cmos to 2-3 for a few seconds and putting it back onto 1-2. One of the directions was to remove the round cmos battery, which i did not do because I was unable to reach it enough to remove it. I also took it completely apart and replugged everything in. No such luck. So, I bought another mobo, one just like it but the chipset was nforce3 250 instead of nforce3 ultra. Supported the same hardware, though. Still will not work. So, now i'm wondering if it's the power button on my case. I am probably going to plug my friend's case's power button into my mobo and see if it turns on.
>>>>To summarize-
1)Computer mysteriously turns off.
2)Buy new PSU.
3)Fiddle around with old mobo, but end up buying new one.
4) Still will not turn on. And when I say won't turn on, i mean nothing turns on, moves, makes noise, or lights up.

An easy way to troubleshoot the case power switch is to completely disconnect it from your motherboard. Then take a regular screwdriver, and just quickly touch (short) the two pins that the case's power switch usually connect to.

Hopefully your system will fire up, and you'll know you have a dead power switch!

Hmm so the computer wont turn on, it's not frequently used either and i know it had a few probs in the past... someone plz help me! Yes i did try to switch power supply from 115v to 250v and nothing happened so i turned it back. And when i plugged it in, i can hear like a.... idk high pitch noise coming from the tower but it wont turn on.

Answer:Comp won't turn on. And im not technical

It might help if you listed your PC specifications. You shouldn't change that switch on the back. You adjust that according to the wall socket current. In the USA the default would be 115V. Changing it to 250V could blow the power supply. If nothing happened when you did that, your power supply might be dead already. The other thing is when the power supply blows, it sometimes takes out other components. That didn't necessarily happen but I bring it up only as a possibility.

Question: comp wont turn on

hey everyone,

i was in the middle of playing a game just like ten minutes ago....and my comp just froze. so i restarted it and it turned off, and doesnt turn back on. It will turn as far as loading up the drives and fans but then shut off before a picture of anything actually appears on the screen.

from what ive been reading it's probably my power supply or motherboard, but more likely power supply i think.

so the main problem is it wont even turn on now, but i have had problems in the past where it randomly wasnt too often, only when i had a lot running and at that only about once every other day.

ive talked to my friend about that who works with comptuers more than me and he also suggested that it was the power supply, becuase im running a lot in my computer.

specs are -
amd dual core 4600+ windsor if i remember right
320 GB WD hard drive
ASUS M2N-E mobo
radeon x1800xt 256 mb
zs audigy 2 gamer
corsair xms ram DDR2 800 (PC4400)
and one dvd rw drive

i think thats it that i can remember.

thanks everyone.

Question: Comp wont turn on

so my desktop is kinda busted,

1) whenever i try turning it on both green and red lights would flash it would start up for about 3 seconds and then shut down.

2)After that i can no longer use the power button in the front to turn on my comp but instead i have to go to the back to turn off the main power and back on then my comp would start. then it would go back to point 1.

3)Then after trying over and over, somehow when i turn on the comp after Point 2 and holding down the reset button, it would be in some sort of powered state?? and if i get lucky when i let it go the hard drive would power up and go, if not i am back to point 1 all over again

4)So if i get the hard drive up and running it would start to boot and how up on my monitor, then it would ask me for Safe mode, normal mode and that stuff, and after the window loading screen i either A) get an auto restart or B) get a blank screen

can anyone help me solve this ?

Answer:Comp wont turn on

So after replacing the Power supply i can now turn on my comp with no problems.

Hi there! I've a problem with my computer. After I'd updated the BIOS (my mobo: Gigabyte GA-P35-S3) the machine stopped turning off. I mean, the fans still worked, the monitor stopped responding, the led on chassis was on. But someone helped me on IRC - told me what to change in the settings and it worked. In Gigabyte they said to flash the BIOS to the new beta, and when it didn't help - to change the mobo in the shop. Can someone please help me?

Try unplugging the power cable for a little while, then plug it back in and try turning it on. I've had this happen to me before and just took some time to get it up and running again. Of course, this is more than likely the warning signs of a bad power supply. If you have a spare, I'd try starting up with that one and if it boots, try the other again. To put it bluntly, if it doesn't boot, you fried your PS, more than likely.

it worked fine when changed the hard driver to another hard driver(20GB Windows Xp media center). i pluged the 71GB as slave and it steal wont turn on.

Hi Igli and welcome to the Techspot Forum

First its a Hard Drive not a hard driver, from your post I can only guess that the 71GB Hard Drive has failed, either mechanically or electronically.

Suggestions, go to the maufacturers website and download the test tool for the drive in question and test it, sorry to say if the test tool finds it faulty then all your data is gone.

Which is safer regarding malware using a login password or nothing at all. How do you disable the need to login to windows xp?

Answer:Using administrator of comp safe?

Well as far as "SAFER" neither of them will be any difference from an infection, because most infections are going to attack your Windows/System and Windows/System32 folders, which is going to be able to be accessed by either user, so that wont make a difference. You remove the password by going to Start-->Control Panel-->User Accounts and disabling your password for the user you want to disable.

are you just putting the computer together or has it worked before?
if your just now setting it up it could the motherboard shorting out. like if one of the mounting screws for the motherboard is touching something on the board it could cause it to short out. try and see if you can remove the board from the case so that its not touching anything metal and see if it will boot up.

I recently bought a new harddrive and installed it, but I wasnt getting anything on my screen and was getting a long beep over and over again (Award BIOS for my Gigabyte GA-K8NS Trtiton). Well, not long after I couldnt get my computer to start up, was thinking it was my power source which is around 5 years old, so I bought a new one -

Well, this didnt help, comp wouldnt start until we took out one of my IDE cables, so we got some new ones but still cant get computer to start, except sometimes we get it to go on very
briefly, this is how we found out a IDE cable was broken. Think you can help us out? ty

1 Stick of RAM, 1 gig
AMD Athlon Processor
2 Maxtor Harddrives(56 gig, and the new 250gig)
[Gigabyte Triton GA-K8NS Motherboard

Answer:Comp wont turn on, other problems, etc

Look in your motherboard's manual for beep codes. I did google this as well, and found that never-ending long beeps may mean that there is a problem with your memory:

Try reseating your RAM, and even try different RAM slots. Maybe you bumped your stick or something

This morning my computer auto-shutoff (before I woke up). When I went to turn it on, the box light and fans blinked on for less than a second and then nothing. I opened it up, it's clean (dusted it with air about two weeks ago), all lines look and feel to be securely in place, and the motherboard light is on, which I think rules out the power supply. So what is wrong with my system?

System Specs:

Power Supply: 470W Thermaltake (Silent Power Edition)
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz (1066MHz Front Side Bus) (4MB Cache) (Conroe)
MotherBoard: Asus P5N-SLI (Chipset: nForce 570 Intel) (SLI Compatible) (Conroe)
Memory: 2GB DDR2 Super Talent at 800MHz (High Performance)
Hard Drive: 80GB Western Digital (8MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA)
Video Card: nVidia GeForce 7600GT 256MB (By: XFX) (PCI-Express)
Cooling: Air Cooling (Certified Digital Storm Heat-sink and Fan) (Stage 1 Cooling)
OS: Windows XP ME 2005 SP2

I do plan on calling Digital Storm Tech Support this morning, but since they're a west coast company I have to impatiently wait for them to open at 9am. Depending on the problem, they may not be able to fix it either, so I come to you guys.

Thank you, in advance, for any light you can give to this problem.

Hi All,

I bought my computer about 2 years ago from IBUYPOWER. Never had any issues. Will post specs after the story. So i used to have a GTX 580 but upgraded to a single 680. Then this past weekend i received a second 680(exact same). I was trying to get the hardware in but was having some issues fitting it for some reason. I had to get up and leave for a minute but wanted to make sure i didnt screw anything up (hardware was still not installed). Before i left it i turned my PC on and it was fine. Came back to finish up and managed to fit it and plug in the power cables as well. When i turned my computer on nothing happened. It seems one of the fans tried to turn on but it just stopped immediatly. No beeps nothing except for 2 leds that turned on and stay on as long as its powered up.

So far what i tried to do is just make sure all my wires are in correctly... however everything seems to be in place and nothing seemed to have moved... I am unsure what is causing this.

My specs are:
HAF 932 case
12gb corsair ram
1000 watt PSU coolermaster rated bronze
currently installed GTX 680 from EVGA 4gb FTW
I7 980
MOBO guerilla G1(the leds showing up are the ones right below the ram sticks)

I do not have much build experience but i do no this computer has worked flawlessly prior to this.
If any more detail is needed please let me know.

Well my computer doesn't turn on anymore. It was working fine and then the power cord of the surge got unplugged from the outlet. Needless to say the comp wont turn on anymore. I was wondering if its the psu or the mobo that has messed up. When I plug in the comp the steady power light turns on, on the mobo which i assume it means it receiving some type of power. But when I press the power button the led lights of comp flash on and then turn back off. So does anybody know if its the psu or the mobo that is damaged?

Answer:Comp Wont Turn ON is it the PSU or the Mobo

Probably Power Supply (hard to say really)

Just for a quick option:

Remove the power cord
Hold the On button in for 30 secs (releasing all internal voltage)
Put the power cord back in (securely)
Turn on (I hope)

*note to moderators: i don't need to fix my computer. this specific section if just for general security discussion.
can someone/malcious program fizzle, turn off, or temporarily dissolve your firewall so that they can get in?
i am trying to figure out more about security and what malicious stuff can do to your computer.
does anyone know the answer to this question?
thank you

Answer:can your firewall be temporarily turn off so that someone can get into your comp

Rather than fizzle the firewall malicious hackers would be far better off opening a random port for their communications, which would remain open. As to a malicious program doing this it would be a far more complicated scenario. i know webcrawlers constantly hit my work server firewall looking for open ports, but they would be unable to modify these settings from the inside if they did get in. (despite all the chaos they would cause). As to software firewalls on workstations being temporarily compromised on workstations... someone else can jump in here

Computer takes forever to turn on, we assumed it was the power supply because it was only 200w which probably was one of the problems but it still takes about 4 minutes to run. Its a 350w psu dual fans, the rear fan does not spin. Dont tell me its the psu cause this computer has given me soo much trouble i wont even believe that. Any suggestions?
btw: the computer listed below is not the computer im working on it is a

ok, so lets start like this: i dont know too much about computers, but i did a little research. i know what the motherboard is and i know that the actual power button on the tower just sends the signal to switch on or off to the power supply unit... And i havent done anything to my computer recently just have gone online. So All i did was shut my computer down last night, and it WOULDNT TURN ON this morning.
- i already tried unplugging and plugging back in, and changed the the power bar. everything else on the bar works (my light, the monitor, the dsl box, and the speakers) except the computer base.

I'm running a Prescott P4 3.2 gHz, 1.5 gigs of ram, nVidia 5500 card, on an ASRock Motherboard model p4v88, running WinXp sp2 and every single update...

Last night I shut down the system before I left with no problems. I haven't had *any* problems with it, really, as long as I've owned it. I take great care of it and it's been devoid of viruses or disk error or anything since I've had it (only 5 months). Also no BIOS updates in a long time, and no windows updates in a few weeks.

This morning I pushed power and the fans whirred up for maybe a half a second before the system turned off. I pushed power again and the same thing happened. I unplugged everything from the back but the power, same. I opened it up (unplugged) and pulled out the ram - same. Uplugged the harddrives - same. Cdroms/pci cards/video card/ etc., until the only thing that was plugged in was the motherboard. I'm still having the same problem. The little green LED on the front of the case remains lit even tho the sys isn't on. I think the PSU is okay... what the hell could the problem be? The computer was plugged into a surge protector so I don't think it got a shock. I haven't like spilled water on it or anthing.. ahh...

hi judy...welcome to TSG....
antivirus 2009 is a's malware....and once on your machine, you'll need some help to clean it out.

read this sticky and follow the instructions for downloading hijack this, running a scan, and saving a log file.....once you've done that, start a new thread in the malware forum...describe your problem as you did here, and post your logfile with it.

I'm wondering if it's better or worse for the computer to leave it on all the time? I'm running a new PC with XP. a P4 2.53Ghz, 512RDRAM, and the rest of the normal goodies. Monitor is a 21" Viewsonic.

Right now, I have all the power settings set to "Never" but my monitor shuts off after an hour.

I've heard it both ways - that it's better for electronics such as computers to be left on all the time instead of turning off and on....or that it's better to save wear & tear by shutting down when they won't be used for a while.

I have DSL, running Norton AV, ZoneAlarm on it.

Any advice appreciated! Thanks!

I've seemed to have gotten careless and been infected with something. My computer (Gateway P-6301), which is a wireless setup, has been powering off during AVG(free) scans.
I have tried to scan it in safe mode and the same thing happens. I know it's not running hot.

I have another problem aswell but I don't know it it's related, or if it's just my computer.
that problem is that my CPU seems to get maxed out for short periods of time daily. I'm guessing I'm part of a botnet.

I ran HijackThis and have the log if you want to see it.
I also have the log of when I ran Stinger.
Below I attached the log of DDS.
I couldn't get the log of RootReal as It would run for awhile then the window would go transparent and I could only see the border.

First of all I apologize if this question has already been posted!

I'll try to explain the whole thing:
This morning I downloaded some video from a memory card onto my hard drive I usually do this by plugging in my camera to the computer, but my camera batteries died, so I decided to insert the memory card directly into the tower (Ive never done this before so I assume this is part of the problem)
After i did this my computer starting running very slowly so i had to restart it.

Now I keep getting a message that says
"We apologize for the inconvenience but Windows did not start successfully"
This page gives me an option to start up in safe mode, but when i try to do that
I get a list of lines that read:
"multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\Drivers\... "
(this line appears about 20 times, all with a different ending such as "NDIS.SYS" or "pciide.sys" etc...

Also, when I restart and hit the F8 button wile its starting up I get this message:

can anyone help?

Thank you

So every time I log onto my computer my internet opens up automatically, first thing, and it always shows me this page called or something like that...
its really this is the first thing that happens when i turn on my computer..I dont even go on the internet ..this just pops up and I dont know why..
Does anyone know how I can get rid of it??
Ive never even heard of this site..its so weird..I have no idea why this happens..

Is there anything I can do to get rid of this..? I didn't even do anything...I just want to get rid of this..and I just finished scanning my comp. with an anti-virus program and an adware program and a registry mechanic program and it didn't find anything..
and I still get this pop up..

How can I get rid of it..?
Can someone help me out.?

Answer:I keep getting this weird pop-up every time I turn on my comp. and after it loads..

Hmm well its definitly a virus/addware. What anti virus program are you useing? PCTools I believe is good protection but this thing could be going pretty deep. Look up Spyware Doctor.

Take a look at you startup config. There should be something there telling it to do so. Im not at my home computer and my work comp doesnt allow me to edit setting but I BELIEVE this can be done by clicking START>RUN> MSConfig. There should be a startup tab there.

hmm about 30 mins ago i walked away from bestbuy a proud owner of a radeon 9800 pro, i go home i install it and i hook up my computer, everything is working fine and running smoothly untill i turn on a demo the GFX card cd had, about couple secs into the demo my computer shuts down and well, dosent turn on again, looking back im tracing the problem to my powersupply burning out (since i have 2 cd rom drives and 2 hard drives ontop of the new 9800 pro, it had to have given out sometime i guess) i am unclear of how to figure out the wattage my powersupply provides, also i do not even know how to tell if the powersupply was actualy the thing that broke, can anyone confirm the problem befor i go out and pay bestbuy couple hundred bux just to tell me i have connected powercords incorectly or something..

Answer:un expected comp shutdown wont turn on

I have had a few problems with power supplies before. There is an easy way to check the wattage of your power supply, simply look at the sticker that is usually on the side of it, you may have to unscrew it from your case. If you want to check the fuses inside the power supply that will give you an idea if it was a blown fuse due to all the peripherals. Otherwise you can ask a friend if you can borrow his power supply just to see if that works. Power supplies are fairly cheap, 15-30 bucks for a 450w, which would probably be enough to run everything you have. Your problem sounds a lot like what mine was before though, so i can almost assure you that you didn't do anything wrong w/ the video card. good luck.

Ok I have no idea what is going on with this computer and I am very very tired of trying to figure it out.

I've the following programs and have used them often: CCleaner, IOBIT (Advanced Care, Smart Defrag, etc), Microsoft Security Essentials, UnLocker, SuperAntiSpyware

I have the following browsers IE, Firefox, Chrome, Opera

When using a browser (pick one) it....."stalls" I guess is what you call it, it just won't go to a page, always looks like it's loading, etc. I close it and when I try to reopen it says that the browser is still running and can't open another. When browsing I also can not play games like on, I can't get drop down menus to work, etc. After this, I also can not get the computer to shut down or restart (have to press the power button) and occassionally it gives me a pop up error about NsAppShell:Event something.

Please help me solve this problem once and for all.

I have tried uninstalling browsers and reinstalling.

Thank you in advance!

^Sorry about that post being so sloppy, I posted this about 3 minutes before my workplace closed and my boss was in a hurry to get everyone out and lock the doors. This problem is on my computer at work.

Answer:Browsers Stalling, Comp Won't Restart/Turn Off, etc.

Can you post the full error that it's giving you?

I found that Firefox's add-ons can be causing the issues you're experiencing, but I'm not sure if that's the case with your PC...

Try booting into "Safe Mode With Networking" to see if the problem persists.

1)The computer turns on, then it goes to the screen that says Windows didn't start successfully and gives you the different options to boot up (like safe mode, ect).
2)No matter what I choose, it goes to another screen that says "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent any damage." The other parts say, "Check your computer for CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption..."

Hi all. Hope one of yahs can help me out.

2 wenesdays ago I constructed my first comp, and to my amazement I managed to put it together flawlessly.

I'm a heavy gamer. Lots of FPS, and WoW. I play around 3-10 hours a, day depending on the day.

This morning I wake up and boot up my comp. Everything is fine. I log into World of Warcraft and play for around 5 minutes before suddenly my comp just shuts down. Almost like as if someone pushed the power button.

I'm thinking "WTF?", so I check my monitor and speakers and sure enough they are powered on, and responding. I tried to turn the comp back and on and nothing happened. I checked inside the tower and the motherboard LED light is on. The orange enet light is also on.

At the moment I don't have the hardware to test swap (I will on monday). I was hoping that some of you may have overcome this problem before. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Here are my comp parts in case they may help.

Try a different psu. If that doesn`t help, then it`s probably the mobo or cpu that`s died.

I just replaced my old board, processor, and memory in my backup comp with an MSI K8T Neo-V board, AMD Athlon 3800, and 1gb memory. I got it all set up, and powered it on, but the fans kicked for a sec, and the power LED flashed on, but went off almost instantly. I re-seated everything, and unplugged all unnecessary devices (HDD's, etc), and it still did the same thing. I'm thinking it might be power supply, but it worked immediately before the upgrade. Any thoughts?

Answer:Just replaced Mobo, now Comp doesn't turn on

Do you have the 4-pin molex connector connected from the power supply to the plug near the processor on the motherboard?

My computer froze, and I turned it off. I then turned the computer back on, and the Windows XP logo that comes on at the beginning will not appear. I can keep the computer on for an hour, and all I get is a blank black screen with a blinking white cursor at the top lefthand corner of the screen. Is there any way to fix this?

how do i change the programs that start loading up when i turn my computer on?

Answer:how do i change what programs load when i turn my comp on?

You can change what loads on startup in the System Configuration Utility. Go to Start > Run, and type in "msconfig" without the quotes. Click on the "Startup" tab, and this provides a list of programs that run on startup.

Be careful with this tool though. It would be best to post what programs are on this list, and we can provide info on what is OK to disable.

My system about 3 years oldDell XPS Gen3 pci expressswindows xp propent 4 3.22 g ddr2 533 mem8800gt video card 2months oldsound blaster soundRecently upgrade from 1 gig memeory to new 2 gigs of memeory 2 weeks ago.Computer ran fine the day before but went to turn it on yesterday and it starts up fine for first second then all the fans kick on at high speed the power light turns yellow and that is as far as it goes fans at full speed and wont boot.I have tried putting the old memory back and and no help. blew out the inside which was pretty clean. Removed the video card and put it back in along with sound card. This has hapened before but turning it off and back always took care of it but had not happened in over a month.Widows is up todate with all files.

Answer:WheN I turn on my comp the fans kick on high and thats it

I would try to reset the cmos first. Turn off the computer, unplug the computer, open the case and find the small battery on the motherboard. Make sure you ground yourself by touching a piece of metal from the case before taking the battery out. Leave it out for about 20 minuets. Push the power button a couple times also (I have heard there can be some stored power left in the caps?) Put the battery back and start the computer.  I doubt this will do anything, but it is a quick thing to try.If I had to guess, I would say it is your power supply. I say that because I see you added a fairly power hungry graphics card plus more ram. You may be reaching the limits of your power supply.  How big and what kind of power supply is it? Should be listed on the side of it.

I recently purchased a 512 MB stick of RAM for my PC. I made SURE it worked with a PC shopmen, and I made sure my motherboard was compatible. I have 0 viruses etc and 20 gb of free memory. My comp is a Compaq Presario, a bit old so the Motherboard can only sustain 512 MB of RAM. I put the stick in, success! It fits. We then turn the PC on, it works, but the monitor stays OFF. We checked 5 times to see what was the problem with no success, so my brother and I then put the 126 MB of RAM back in (it was hard to get a hold of this, my comp is living in the 90's) and the 126 MB of RAM worked, and then we moved the 512 over a slot, to no avail it STILL wouldn't work. Can you tell me what is wrong? I will post my system specs and the RAM specs.RAM: 512MB PC133 CL3 (SDR below)System Specs:OS: Windows ME (soon to be XP)Type: Compaq PCManufacturer: CompaqProcessor: Intel Pentium III, ~930 MHzCurrent RAM: 126 MBDirectX: 9.0bSeries of Compaq: 5003 US (of the 5000 Series)Can ANYONE tell me why my monitor is not behaving and not turning on? This is extremely unfortunate. I am used to being let down/not getting what I want on a constant basis but this is just plain ANNOYING! PLEASE HELP!Issue: 512 MB RAM works in PC but monitor does not turn on. Please read above.Thanks.~Sam

Answer:RAM fits in Comp but Monitor doesn't turn on. HELP

I believe the 5000 series could only hold 256 RAM per slot for 768 total. So, while it can use 512 RAM, it CANNOT use a single 512 meg. chip. I hope you can get your money back. I think they also used CL2 and some Compaqs are VERY particular about the RAM.Have a read:, because "it fits" does not mean anything other than it fits.

So, yeah, right now I'm running in safe mode. Which is good news for me considering I can now hopefully track the problem down to a few drivers.

But otherwise, when I start up my computer 'normally', I have less than 15 seconds after the desktop appears before I get a bsod.

The Dump file is attached. The perfmon health report is not because "An error occured while attempting to generate the report."
I suppose it doesn't work while in safe mode.

Is Windows 7 . . .
- Home Premium x64 - the original installed OS on the system? I first had win7 ultimate installed by my brother while I was away. I later found he didn't install a genuine version, so I downgraded to a legit, full retail home premium version.
- What is the age of system (hardware)? Around a month
- What is the age of OS installation? About 4 days. However, this new version of windows 7 is most
likely not the cause of errors because I was getting Bsods before the change.

Answer:Comp. Immediately Crashes. Safe mode = Ok.

For troubleshooting purpose, remove AVG then replace it with MSE.

Also test your Hardisk:
- Right click cmd.exe → run as admin → chkdsk /f /r
- WDC Data Lifeguard Diagnostic → EXTENDED TEST

Update this driver:

sorry if this is kinda spam, but I just got my Nxzt lexa together and want to see it glow, i think all the psu's hooked up, mobo and hdd and dvd drive, will any of the parts be affected if I turn it on and just pull the plug to turn it off?( it has this normal 4 pin connector on the mobo that says it regulates power to components, in the manual it says for sli, its called like "ez plug", but it cant hurt to plug it in any way, right?)
this is one **** of a computer case, especially with that huge chrome heat pipe you can see from a mile away

now that i can actually sit back and look at it, it reminded me i just could of hooked in the psu first and just pluged in the led fans, but o well.

i am using a system with windows xp. i have the computer plugged into the wireless adapter. usually my LAN icon and my Wireless icon show that I am connected. A few days ago my LAN icon shows the yellow triangle for limited or no connectivity. However the wireless was still connected and I was confused b/c both are using the same connection. So I thought maybe the modem was bad so i went o comcast and got a new modem. Now with the new modem both the LAN and Wirless won't connect. I hardwired the computer to the modem with no router and still no connection.

comcast says they have an ip address showing for my modem and all signals are strong. so they said something is wrong with my computer. the only recent downloads i did wwas winzip and yahoo messenger. i ran hijackthis, malwarebytes, superantispyware and they found nothing (b/c i scan regularly)

i did ipconfig and my ip addres is showing i did ipconfig /renew and nothing happens.

soooooo i decided to restart in safe mode with networking and now here i am with both wireless and LAN connected.

someone help me please!!! what is going on here?
also the reason i downloaded winzip recently is because my send to folder was empty. i found trouble shooting for it and typed in the command to add it back but nothing happened.
also all of a sudden when i click on my computer the flashlight icon searches for about 10 minutes before it displays my computer.

Answer:Comp can't find ip address EXCEPT for in safe mode

Do a system restore to before all the problems and see if that helps.

My understanding of malware is quite basic, but it seems like one of the big issues in trying to clean a system is that the bugs are loaded by Windows into memory and hence cannot be easily purged while Windows is running. Would it be possible then to clean a drive on a 2nd system--that is hook up the drive as a secondary on another clean box then remove the files identified in a previous HijackThis log from the sick drive?

Assuming that this is feasible, is it safe? Or will the malware migrate even if the infected registry on the 1st drive is not implemented?

Answer:Safe to scan infected drive on 2nd comp?

HJT is looking into the registry of the booted disk, but Adaware/SpyBot can scann other drives.

I think you'd be better off to post the active HJT log and get instructions on what/how to remove the probs.

Hi -

Unfortunately, I recently went to a website and contracted some trojan and tracking viruses . Then Windows XP system program would not run anymore in normal mode after that. Computer will only allow me to go into "safe mode" or "safe mode with networking". In the "safe mode with networking", computer will allow me to get connected to internet, but only for a few minutes, before restarting automatically. If I choose option to start computer in "Normal mode", computer will just continuallly restart (Windows XP never gets to run on "normal mode"). Used AVG Anti-Spyware to quarantine and delete viruses in "safe mode", but still have the same problem.

Will run Hijack This & Smit Fraud Fix and post logs here - but will be in "safe mode with networking".

Any help would be most appreciated,
My computer randomly freezes. Sometimes it goes a day with no issues, other times its five seconds after loading my desktop. I have the latest Norton anti virus and had Bit defender prior to that. No virus or malware issues were ever detected. I have eliminated most start up apps using the guides on this site and no improvement. I defraged and ran skndsk /r multiple times. still no improvement. Yet i am able to run in safe mode with no crashes. I just started using Wise Disk Cleaner to look at my registry. I however don't know what i am to look for. Any pro tips for me?

Answer:Freezing Comp. Only runs in Safe Mode

1) Boot to the XP cd and choose the first repair option. Once in the Recovery Console, run chkdsk /r 2) Download memtest, burn it to cd, and check your ram:

I have a Dell desk top, windows Vista, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB external hard drive.I was working on the computer, no internet up. Only a Word Document up. I wanted to play a game I had installed on the computer over a year ago, Chuzzles.  I opened a folder I made for extra not often used games. I double clicked on the Chuzzles icon, but missed the icon. So I double clicked actually on it. It didn't open. I double clicked twice meaning 4 times, by accident again. The Chuzzles screen came up, it was the not full screen one, so I clicked the full screen option. The monitor then turned a blue and white fuzzy mess with 3 letters across the screen, one letter was "e" and the date 2010 came on the screen with it. Then my tower started making a loud whirring like an engine and there were 3 beeps that occurred over and over every 2 seconds. At my brother's instruction I tried to turn it off at the tower with the powen button, didn't go off. I unplugged the tower at the wall. Then I tried plugging it in again, then pressed the on button. The computer went right back into making the whirring noise and the 3 beeps over and over and nothing came up on my monitor, black screen. I was really concerned at this point. Couldn't turn the computer off with the power button so I unplugged it again.  I waited half an hour before doing the start up process again: Still the noise, beeping, and won't turn off, and nothing on the monitor. I unplugged the computer, w... Read more

Hi, I would firstly like to apologize for not being able to update my user CP or tell you what my CPU/Mobo is. I can't get my computer to turn on and can't access the info.

This happened while I was trying to reset everything on my computer (because there was a problem with my NIC). I unplugged everything and replugged them into their respective places, and now I can't seem to turn my computer on. Everything was working fine (except the NIC) prior to my resetting. Now the problem is when I turn on the power, there would be a small delay before it would turn on, and when it does turn on, the lights in front of the computer (for the on switch) flash, the flashing intervals are synchronized with the rate the CPU fan turns on and off. The case fan is running constantly however and it is blowing out cool air. I have done some searching on the forums, and I have heard that it was because I unplugged the 12-20 wire that connects the power button (in the front) to the CPU. I unplugged this wire and the fans still turn on and off, except the front LED's can't flash. If anyone can help me, that would be most appreciated.

Answer:Lights flash, fans turn on and off, comp remains off.

You gotta do some more diagnostics.
But before I'll start listing them, I have one question:
Before you've removed components from your computer did you un-plug it from AC outlet? Cause if you didn't you may've damaged motherboard or any other component for that matter. I know it sounds silly but I'm just making sure.
Anyway, do as follows:
Unplug the power. Open the case and re-sit you memory modules and if you have to re-sit your CPU chip. Re-sit all your add-on cards (sound, video etc.) Make sure you re-install the CPU heatsink properly. Make sure that all cards and modules are snug and properly sitted in the motherboard.
Note! Dont' ever operate your CPU without properly installed heatsink, ever!
Plug it back in and the try to boot. If it's still no go:
Unplug it. Pull all the cards out except for the video card. Disconnect all your drives: hard drives, cd/dvd-rom/rw drives, floppy drive(s) etc. Actually disconnect everything from you motherboard except for: CPU, 1 memory module and video card (and of course power supply - make sure the 12V+ cpu plug is in the motherboard!). Plug in and power on. See what happens. If it's still no go move the memory module to a different slot; power on; still no go - pull the video card out: plug-in power on; still no go:
- Your power supply, motherboard, memory module or CPU has gone bad - you gotta swap them out with differnt component to test if this fixes the problem; star... Read more

Hey everyone, how are you?I'm new to this forum. And as I would imagine most people new to this forum are, they're in need of answers. What has happened to my rig is absolutely weird.I haven't suffered from the usual signs of hacking, malware, etc.No, what i've been experiencing is worse. And i've been trying to look up others who have had this problem but neither google or yahoo have come up with links fitting the description of my problem. Basically, what has happened, is that when I turn on my computer (Windows 7, 64-bit) and log in, that's fine. But after a second of a login, a female voice begins to play over my speakers, speaking russian (Or some slavic language, i'm not sure.) for about two to three minutes. I have for the second day in a row today, put it on pause. But after waiting about ten minutes and then unmuting my speakers, I started to hear some russian (slavic?) chick talking about someone accessing something about spyro (I'm assuming it's regarding the playstation game.). It's unsettling and frightening, because I have no idea what's going on. I've run scans through spybot and Malwarebytes, and neither have come with anythinhg. I'm desperately trying to figure out what's going on.I would very, very much appreciate it if anyone has any theories or can share experiences, etc.

Answer:Turn on comp (Win 7) and Russian chick starts talking.

Bump. Please, please help. This is almost like a ghost story.Like I said, I log in to windows 7 and I start getting this chick speaking russian for about five minutes. I am not russian, so I can't possibly say what the person is saying. Then it goes silent. For about five minutes, and then said female starts talking in russian-english, talking some crazy *censored* about spyro, like she's observing someone screwing with their files.

I have my iPod hooked up to my frontal Firewire port. While I had my computer on I stupidly unplugged the firewire withouth "safelly removing the hardware". As soon as I did this my music started distorting badly, shortly after the monitor shut down. I could not do anything I then had to hold in the power button to shut down the computer. The computer is now off the firewire cable is unplugged and now my computer will not turn on. Pressing the power button does nothing at all.

I am using a PC running XP, It's brand new with great parts.

I have no idea what to do your help is highly appreciated.

Thank You,

Please help! Automatic updates apparently did not configure correctly. Now this message appears. The computer then shuts down and restarts itself. I have tried F8 in all modes including last known good configuration and system restore but it continues. I can't even boot from cd/dvd. All I get is this message and the computer restarts, and restarts, and restarts. Can anyone help me get my windows back???

Answer:Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your comp

Thats scary!
Even booting into safe mode and uninstalling the updates manually does not work?
To boot from CD/DVD, make sure the BIOS has been configured to boot from CD/DVD before the Hard disk. Try booting with your Windows CD and doing a repair install.

I am running Windows XP, don't know what service pack.

When I started up my computer and then logged in, the screen flashed black, a message from the monitor appeared "auto adjust in progress" and then my screen was at a very low resolution. I tried changing it back but none of the resolutions seemed quite right (could just be me). So I decided to restart and see what happens. This time login screen is at the low resolution (I can't remember if I had left the screen at a low resolution when I restarted.). So I go back, try one ore time and the same thing happens as the first time, log in, screen flashes black, message shows for fraction of a second and the resolution goes low.

I can't remember what I did since the last time the computer was on before the problems started occurring. But, today I ran a scandisk, (because of a problem an HP printer I installed yesterday is causing), I installed a new program called "Combat arms" (a free to play online FPS I downloaded) and I uninstalled multiple applications as part of some cleanup I was doing.

Any advice on fixing my problem would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:[SOLVED] Screen resolution changes everytime I turn on the comp.

no one has any ideas?

Hey, this is my first build so I've been extra careful to make sure I've done everthing correct however when I went to turn the PSU on, the green LED on my motherboard that recognises the SATA drivers (my optical 1TB Western Digital and a Sony DVD writer)and lights up, yet when I push in the ON button on the outercase NOTHING happens. No fans turn on, nothing.

Everthing I've bought is new and reccommended so Im assuming it's the way I've wired it up, which is very possible because when it came to the PSU wiring I wasn't too confident what I was doing what right.

My motherboard is ASUS M4A89GTD PRO USB3
CPU is AMD Phenom II X4 940
RAM - 2 x 2GB of Corsair DDR3 Memory
The drivers mentioned above.
Cooler Master Sileo 500 case and PSU unit.

The power switch runs through an adapter chip so I took it out and plugged it straight into the motherboard but still nothing happened.

Now it could possibly be the PSU but it's brand new and in the manual it reccommends a 450 watt so I'm covered, plus Im using the built in graphics card, so no extra wattage is needed.

Like I said I wasn't very sure I was wiring everything up right to the PSU. All the wires had things like P4, P14, P6/etc is this significant to what you plug into it? I just clicked in one that fitted into the SATA drives, the PSU fan is a 4 pin but my mobo only has a 3 pin connecter but even so, this can't be the problem because NOTHING will power on.

Yes it can. If the motherboard senses the CPU fan isn't connected properly, it won't power up. I looked up the motherboard and I believe you have connected the CPU fan to the wrong connector. The CPU fan motherboard connector definitely has 4 pins and is labeled CPU fan on the motherboard. Look for the connector along the top edge of the motherboard.

Answer:comp stuck in safe mode with black screen

Do you have the original boot disk; if so boot using the CD or floppy (as appropiate) and reinstall into the original forder. This should fix the problem.
