Preferred Solution: Onboard shared video memory increase

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer:How to increase the shared video memory on Portege M100

Hi

As far as I know this notebook has a Intel graphic card.
for example on a ATI graphic cards it?s possible to set the shared memory manually but on a Intel graphic card the shared memory will be set automatically.
Therefore you cannot find any options for changing this value.

I want to increase it from 512 mb to 1 gb, but I don't have any option in the BIOS. In desktop APU systems it's possible, since there's an option in the BIOS. Do I need some kind of modified, unlocked or "hacked" BIOS?

Thanks in advance

Answer:Satellite L845D - how to increase shared video memory (AMD APU)

All this works automatically and you cannot change the values manually. All you can do is to upgrade RAM. After doing that more RAM will be used for GPU and graphical operations.

Hi,
I have hp pavilion dv6 laptop with 2Gb RAM and 760Mb onboard graphics. So is there any perticular method to increase the graphic memory?

Answer:How to increase the onboard graphic memory in laptop?

Some laptops has an option in the BIOS where you can choose how much of the available RAM you want to share with the video card, so if your laptop has that option just add more RAM and adjust in the BIOS

I attached a screenshot of my CPU specs. Any help please? I've done this before with my Windows XP however I already forgot how.. please.. I just want to increase the SHARED memory. I know all about the dedicated video card memory.. thanks

IT would help if you updated to service pack 1 as well, and the 200+ updates that follow.
And with that little ram i wouldn't be surprissed if it just stays at the default card

i just bought a used dell laptpop an inspiron 1100. it is suppose to be able to share up to 64mb of memory for video. when i look in the bios it shows 8mb being used but i cab't find anything to select to change that. When i use dxdiag to see what is being used it also says 8mb being used with a max of 64mb. how can i change this so 64 is always being used. i have a game that i want to install that works on another laptop with 32mb of video.
thanks

Answer:Increase Shared Video

Hi nixgod.
If there is no bios setting for it then it is completely controlled by the chipset.
It should borrow video memory dynamicly on demand. If you are testing at an idle state or from the bios, virtually no video memory is required. However, to reach the maximum (or "up to") usually means that the laptop must contain the maximum main memory to do so. How much ram is installed in the laptop? If it is below 512mb, you're not likely to get the full 64. That system maxes out at 1gb. If you are at 512mb or above, I'd suggest a bios, chipset and video driver update, in that order, as possible solutions. Let us know.

The Catalyst Control Center says that the graphics is using 128 MB of RAM, but according to the internet this can be increased to 256 MB.

I've looked in the Catalyst Control Center and the BIOS but I can't find anything.

Anyone know?

Answer:Equium L350D - How to increase the shared memory?

Hello

You can?t in crease the video memory, this is not possible.
The video memory will be switched automatically and if the notebook needs more memory it will get more (for example in games). As far as I know the video memory is also depending on the RAM size. If you have more RAM you will also have more video RAM.

Why you want more video memory? I think 128MB should be enough for Windows and some games.

How can i increase the shared memory for the display from 64 Mb to 512Mb?

Answer:Satelite C670-1DW: How can i increase the shared memory?

Hi

This is not possible.
You cannot change the value manually? the graphic card driver controls this and change this automatically.
Furthermore your notebook supports an internal Intel HD (HM55) graphic card and such chip is not really suitable for gaming.

Hi

Upgrading the Ram to the maximum is good idea and I believe the notebook performance will be much better than before.

Back to ?shared memory?. As far as I know shared memory works automatically and there is no way to change it manually. Using more RAM the unit can use more of it for the graphic. I am afraid there is no much to do.

And if make made to 256 will have a good efekt speciality for games or not?

That's all thank's. :]

Answer:Satellite L300D-10B: How can I increase the shared memory?

Hi

You cannot change the shared memory manually.
Everything is controlled by graphic card driver?
This means that if your application needs more graphic memory then the graphic card driver would assign the necessary difference.
But if additional graphic memory is not necessary then the shared memory stays on low level.

Here an example how many graphic memory is available if the notebook uses 1GB RAM:
Dedicated Video Memory: 128MB
Shared System Memory: 191MB
Total Available Graphics Memory: 319MB (Dedicated Video Memory + Shared System Memory)

PS: if you would upgrade the main system memory to 3GB then the graphics shared system memory would increase too.

Answer:Re: Satellite L300-255: how to increase the graphic shared memory

Hi

The graphic shared memory is controlled by GPU driver. You cannot add or change this manually.

Furthermore this depends on the Windows OS you are using because 32bit system can handle max 3.2GB of system memory.

For example:

*(32bit OS)*
System Memory: 2GB | 4GB
Dedicated Video Memory: 128MB | 128MB
Shared System Memory: 702MB | 1214MB
TOTAL Available Graphics Memory: 830MB | 1342MB

*(64bit OS)*
System Memory: 2GB | 4GB
Dedicated Video Memory: 128MB | 128MB
Shared System Memory: 702MB | 1631MB
TOTAL Available Graphics Memory: 830MB | 1759MB

Hope I could help you

Hi! I don't find that option. I have the 2.08 version, but the 3.01 is out there. The graphics performance is not very well now. Is there a way to increase this memory to 256 mb or more? Thanks in advance

Answer:I've not found the option to increase shared memory of intel hd graphics card in BIOS

hi freinn,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

This is on Auto by default.
The amount of memory shared to your graphics is dependent on how much RAM you have. Also even if you max out the RAM capacity there will no big jump on the shared memory just few MBs will be added
The Manual is not available even if there is an updated BIOS.
Even if a Manual option is available still you can only share the same maximum as the one on Auto. Not a big jump.
i hate to say it but that's how it will be

Hope this helps
Cheers!

somehow my vista home premium box system properties dialogue box reported a gig of ram.. now it reports 767 MB of ram.

with 767, my pc has slowed down quite a bit since my video card hijacked my memory without my permission.

checked bios chipset, and video configurations.. there's nowhere to adjust shared video memory there. checked harware manager properties for all video devices.. not there either...

when this happened my windows vista rating dropped from a 4.0 to a 3.0 too.

Hey, is there any way i can increase my video card's memory?
I have heard of "overclocking", but i want something where i can simply go into some system settings and increase my 8mb card to at least a 16 or 32. Please tell me if there is anyway to do this, and feel free to ask for my laptop's specs if you need them!

Answer:increase video memory?

You may be able to do this in the laptop's BIOS/CMOS setup if the card is intergrated. If the Video card has its own memory then you'll either have to buy more memory for it or buy a new card with more memory. In my case, I can do one of the latter 2.

HEY !

I have a real old motherboard [from 2001, I think], and it has integrated graphics. My problem is that when I use 3DMARK 2001, it says my video memory is too low, so I can't benchmark. I know some motherboards allow other people to change the settings of how much video memory you want. Is there a way how I can change this? I know that this willl take some memory away from my SDRAM.

Specs:

Giga-Byte GA-6VEML
Intel Celeron 1300 MHz oc'd to 1560 MHz
Maxtor 80 gigabyte hard drive
A stick of 256 SDRAM
8 MB of Video memory[yeah that's sad i know, on the brochure it said it had the power of a 4x AGP. Marketing bastards]

Answer:Increase Video memory

Hello,

You can only modify the amount of allocated system RAM to onboard graphics if your BIOS allows you to. There should be an option somewhere in there which allows you to alter it.

If not, then I'm afraid it's an AGP port graphics solution for more memory.

Hi guys. I need some help here.

I re-installed one of my games that I used to play a year back and it tells me that I need 12MB of video memory for it to work. I had played this game on the same PC before one year ago, so I do not know why it is telling my PC now that it doesn't have sufficient video memory. Everything was running smoothly when I played the game a year ago.

Has it got anything to do with the increasing number of files I downloaded or some of the programs I have installed over the year? How do I check how much video memory I am currently using? More importantly, how do I physically increase video memory?

(I also met this recent problem of late too: Whenever I open a new Internet Explorer browser, it has this pop-up that says "out of memory at line:534". Nothing's very wrong though - I just press OK and I can still use the Internet. Has this got anything to with the video memory too?)

I have a Dell Inspiron 620 Mini Tower Desktop, with a "Intel Family HD Graphics Card" I've read everywhere on the internet that I can change the dedicated video memory from my current 64mb to a max of 512 since I have 4gb of RAM, however, when I enter BIOS, there is no setting on tabs I can go on to change it at all. Is there any other way of doing it?

Answer:Increase dedicated Video Memory

There is no other way of doing it - - it's purely a BIOS setting.Dell may have installed a cut-down & very limited BIOS with very few user-changeable settings. Most pre-built PC makers do this to stop you messing about in the BIOS and screwing it up.You can overcome the problem by installing a PCIe graphics card which has dedicated video memory of 1 or 2 GB.

Hi,

you can't tell the machine what memory size it should use. It has the possibility to use 128MB. But it will only use the memory that is really needed. So if you don't play 3D games or something like that, you don't need so much video memory.

Post detailed system spec's. If you are using the factory set up and it is using the motherboard's video capability or an inexpensive video card, you will have to purchase a decent gaming video card (assuming this is a desktop and not a laptop). Please post your exact model number or your detailed spec's (if not major mfg. or unit without modifications). If it turns out you do need a video card, post your spec's and a list of the games you plan to play in the gaming post here and get a few recommendations to choose from within your budget (to save you from an expensive mistake). You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane. If all else fails, read instructions.

How to increase dedicated video memory to 512 mb ,i have 128 mb of dedicated vidoe memory and 1760 mb of total video memory and 4gb of ram,can anyone help me ?

Answer:how to increase dedicated video memory ?

This depende on whether your notebook has switchable  graphics (discrete video adapter) or not. HP 6450 notebooks normally do not have discrete graphics because the graphics is supplied on the same chip as the CPU. Discrete graphics is usually only available on high end Gaming notebooks. Video memory for a notebook which has onboard graphics is determined by the amount of installed physical memory module(s). Increase the installed memory top 8 GB and you will see an increase. If you have a notebook with a discrete video adapter (mini PCIe), then you can only increase the video memory by upgrading to a compatible discrete video  adapter that has more memory.

Yes I want to increase my FPS to run around 40-60, the game I play is WWIIONLINE. I currently run around 15-30 FPS and game is kind of jumpy. I really want to keep the price around $150-$200 if possible. I understand if we go over that budget range. Here is all the specs I can give you on my computer:

1. Motherboard - Don't know its a Dell Deminsion E520
2. Graphic interface -256MB PCI ExpressTM NVIDIAŽ GeForceŽ 7300LE TurboCache12
3. Memory -Dual-Channel DDR2 SDRAM (533MHz) I got 1GB
4. CPU -Intel P4 with HT at 3.0ghz with a 800 FSB
5. CPU Speed -look above!
6. Power Supply Make/Model -305 Watt DC Power Supply
7. Watt output/Amperage-not sure about this one!

Like I said its a Dell E520. I am not a "HARDCORE" gamer I just want a nice FPS rate. If can get around 40-60 Avg FPS that would be awesome! If you need anymore info just ask and I will try and get whatever you need! Thanks!

Answer:Want to increase FPS. What is best way? Video Card or More Memory?

Lots of memory, and a very good graphics card, with a power supply that can handle the graphics card. The more you spend, the better it will work... The more you read up on video graphics card, the less you will spend.

Well, hello lenovo forums! I have been downloading some games and stuff, and I encountered the problem that I need more video memory (I have a useless Dedicated Video Memory of 64 mb), so I was looking around and I found out that it had to be changed through BIOS. (I have 6gb ram, so it shouldn't be a problem) But when I tried to look for that option at the BIOS, I couldn't find anything, I can't change the video memory. Actually, I don't have as many options as I expected, so I don't know if this is right. Any suggestions? P.S. I don't know if there's another way to increase it, so any ideas are welcome

I've ordered another 512MB in addition to the base 256MB (of which 240MB is available, as 16MB is allocated to video memory). Once I've added the extra 512MB can I allocate more memory to video?

Thanks,

Fred.

Answer:Equium L10-273: Can I increase Video Memory (UMA)?

A lot depends on the driver / chipset for the graphics processor I suspect that adding more system RAM will have no effect on how much memory you can set for the UMA.

I have a Presario 5441 with an AMD processer and an onboard SIS 530 video card. I've tried to install an ATI Rage 128 but without much success. I've disabled the SIS from the device manager, switched over the display adapter, and changed the BIOS. But I checked in Compaq Diagnostics and it's still using memory that overlaps with the ATI. End result: the information goes through both cards and it locks all the time.
Anyone have any ideas how to fix this? I emailed Compaq and the best advice they could give me was to write an Assembler batch file. I know Perl and some C but Assembler makes my head hurt.

thanks

Hi

I bought Toshiba Satellite C50-A a week ago and today I found it can run some games but not very well.

Is there a way to change my dedicated video memory because its 32mb?
My serial here 5E102406U!

Answer:Can I increase dedicate video memory on my Satellite C50-A?

Hi

As far as I know there is no option where you can change it manually. It simply works automatically and depends on RAM used in your notebook. With more RAM more memory will be used for video operations.

If possible post please exact notebook model and we can check specification and RAM upgrade options.

Hi,

does anybody know how can I increase memory for video card on my Tecra A8-103 ?

I heard that I can 'take' from RAM memory and 'add' it to video card memory , but don't know how ? I have just experienced in BIOS, but didn't see that feature ?

I need it, because of, when I work in Visual Studio .NET, and switch from code to desing mode, a picture disspears, and I have to wait 15-30 seconds until picture comes back :(((((

that's why, I do think that increasing memory on video card will solve this problem ?

10 x thanks in advance

Answer:Tecra A8 -103 - how to increase memory for video card?

You cannot upgrade the VRAM chips, they are soldered onto the PCB.

On some machines, you can increase the VRAM dynamically by installing more System RAM. Have a read of your users manual.

Hi. I recetly bought HP envy note book .The product specifications are as follow. As you can see the my laptop has integrated amd card with almost 4GB of ram. But surprisinlgy, I am not able to play even COD 4 (modern warefare) on it. Weird, isn't it?Then I dive into the hardware information and have found that only 768MB of the grahpics card is being used. Please refer the following image.  Now, I am trying to find a way to increase this allocated Ram but I can't see any such option in BIOS.Note: This notebook doesn't have any dedicated graphics card. So my only option is to increase this adapter ram.How would I do it?

Hello @awaise17, Good to see you back on the forums.  Now lets take a look at your video memory issue.  Thanks you for the pics by the way.  It is nice to have a visual.  Now the memory that you where pointing at in the second pic is dynamic.  So at that moment you system was using that much video memory out of the possible 4GBNow as for you COD modern warfare issue.  I am note exactly sure why this would happen.  I know myself I have a notebook that i can play WOW on and have it cranked right up.  Now when I tried to install and play Splinter Cell, it would not run.  Yet when I installed Battlefield that game ran just fine.  I thought maybe it was the copy of Splinter Cell was a bad copy so I went and picked up another.  Same issue.  Another issue I have run into with gaming is with my one computer I upgraded to windows 8.1.  On this computer when i run the install it goes all the way through but when i go to actually run the game i get a black screen with a cursor and nothing else. So I found a little helper out there called Can You RUN it.  it will allow you to test your specs and find out if your game will run or will not run.  Here is the link CAN YOU RUN IT! With this you will find out what the issue is.  You can have all the memory in the world but that is only the tip of the iceburg when it comes to playing games. I hope this helps.  Please... Answer:Re: Can I increase video memory on Qosmio X300-15D?

As far as I know video memory is dedicated. What you can change is Shared System Memory to get higher total available graphic memory.
Best way to do this is to use max RAM and install 64bit operating system.

Welcome to Seven Forums yuya86!
With a factory motherboard there is little they allow you to change in the BIOS. I have an old Dell Vostro. The only suggestions I have are:
1. Determine how much RAM your system will support and upgrade to the maximum.
2. Check with Dell support to see if there is a "hidden" method to bolster the graphics memory.

good luck!

This old notebook has graphic card with shared memory. With other words, when you have more RAM inside more memory will be used for graphic operations. According notebook specification this old notebook was delivered with 128MB RAM but can be upgraded up to 512MB.

Try to find on internet two modules PC100 256MB with part number PA3069U-1M25 and upgrade it.
It is everything you can do about it.

Hi

As far as I know the unit was delivered with the NVidia GeForce4 420Go 32MB graphic card. This is not a sheared memory graphic card.
The card supports the own memory and not a sheared memory function.
In this case you cannot change the memory value.

Hi there!

I own a Toshiba Portege Z830 - 11M. I want to increase the video memory.

Thank you very much.

Answer:How to increase Video memory on Portege Z830 - 11M?

Hi Leissa

Generally speaking Port?g? Z830-11M is designed to escort us in usual everyday activities like mail sending, office applications and internet communication and characteristic thin and light design allows us to take it everywhere.

Hardware configuration has of course limited performance but at the same time offers excellent multitasking and long battery life. As far as I know on this machine you will not find option to increase GPU performance and all this works automatically.

According some reviews non demanding games should be playable with this graphics card too.
I cannot imagine that you want to play games with this machine so I would like to know what the reason is to ask about more graphic performance.

This means that when the video card is in use, especially in higher display modes, it will take some of the memory normally dedicated to other computing activities and use it for its own tasks. Thus the computer 'shares' its memory with the graphics card.
You cannot alter shared memory, it is system managed.

Answer:Video memory set to No Shared

u will prolly end up with realy crappy gfx performance, cause your onbourd video needs to have access to memory, if none is shared, then the onbourd video will not beable to access any.

disable it only if your not using the onbourd video adapter.

My system is going to have a gig of RAM and I was wondering if it was possible to increase that number to 128MB or 256MB since there's no way I'm going to use all that memory for computing and would like to be able to play some games until I can afford a decent video card. Answer:Increase Integrated Video Card's Memory Size?

I don't believe you can, you will just have to save up for a decent video card, on a buget i would suggest the 6600gt, if you want the best go with a 7800gt/gtx even if you could onboard video still sucks, you can't game on it.

Answer:Satellite L50-B940 - How to increase the dedicated video memory?

Hi Sami

As far as I know this works automatically and there is no option where you can set it manually.
Such option doesn't exist in BIOS.

You know it is always problematic with portable machines. More video power means more heat and due to specific design and cooling system this can be very risky for the machine so on laptops is all this a bit....different.

I've tried searching online for solutions but haven't found any.

I noticed that when watching videos online such as youtube or netflix, it would randomly freeze for a split second then go back to normally playing, and sound doesn't seem to be affected. When I have task manager on, it seems to happen when system and compressed memory shoots up to the top of CPU usage. only around 2.0-3.0% usage, then goes back all the way down, and I'm not exactly sure what is causing it.

Answer:System and compressed memory CPU increase causes video freeze

Unfortunately, there is no option in the BIOS to increase the dedicated video memory.
Depending of the chasis of Optiplex 9020, you may upgrade the video/graphics card if required. Only Mini tower and Small Form Factor chasis of Optiplex 9020 support the dedicated graphics card.

Answer:Satellite L300-129 - How to increase the video memory (sharing)

Hi buddy

Unfortunately, I doubt you could assign a part of the system memory to video memory manually. As far as I know this sharing procedure is controlled by graphic card driver and everything run automatically.

At the other hand the graphic card driver could assign more memory to video card if the system memory would be upgraded.
This means the higher system RAM the higher video RAM.

Hello, I have a DELL Latitude 110L laptop I got through my school, and it has 512MB of shared memory. The brochure said 32-64 MB would be used from the RAM for the video card. According to the diagnostics for the video adapter, a maximum of 128MB is available for use. However, only 8MB is being used for the video... I hate this because all my videos and graphics look like crap.

I was curious if I can change it to have at least 32 MB? And if so, could someone tell me how to do it? Thanks in advance.

yeah just go in to the bios and increase Video Aperture Size to 32MB

Hi to everybody,
I know this topic has been discussed many times, but I am still confused about if there is a definitive answer or not.
Some premises:
- my motherboard does NOT have onboard graphics
- my graphic card is a nVidia Quadro FX 1700 with its own 512 MB DDR3 memory
- Vista reports that the device is working properly
- nVidia driver is 186.something (also downloaded latest 190.something, not beta, but I'm a bit reticent in upgrading something that currently works...)

Problem:
I'm making tests with a computationally-intensive and RAM-eating application: ANSYS v.12 64 bits.
Well, there is some settings in Ansys with which I can force it to use any RAM available. But doing so causes a general Vista hangup anytime Ansys tryes to allocate also the RAM which is used for the Shared Video Memory.
I KNOW that "shared" shouldn't mean "stolen" nor "blocked", but the FACT IS that Vista doesn't seem to be sufficiently fast to de-allocate it in favour of Ansys, OR some allocation conflict arise.
Shared Video Memory, in my case, is as big as 2 GB or so, which is perfectly wasteful because there is NOTHING which needs 2.5 GB buffer for video.
---
So, I absolutely need to force Vista NOT to use so large a Shared Video Memory, or best of all I'd need to disable it...
---
Thanks in advance

Answer:still about shared video memory: need to disable it !!!

When you force a program to use all available RAM, you will freeze your computer. Have you ever used the 'Intel Burn-test'? It destroys your RAM and CPU, completely freezing Windows.

Unless the graphics card is using it, Vista does not allocate any RAM. The reason it is called 'shared memory' is that it is available to either, when they need it.

The more RAM your have, the more Vista will share.

Bad idea. I don't even know if it is possible but you will not solve your problem by stopping Windows from sharing the RAM.

Answer:Problem In VGA & Memory video shared.

Hi Inevitable, welcome to the forums
Could you explain a little better what you are trying to accomplish? Do you want a higher resolution to play Pro Evolution Soccer 2010?
I think your problem is that your video card does not support what you want

I have a laptop Lenovo B490 5935-6014, Intel Core i3 3110m, 4GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics 4000, using Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.How to adjust shared video memory? I think shared video memory is too large (1696MB).I tried going to BIOS setup and I saw nothing about that... Can you help me??? Sorry for my poor English Thanks.

Answer:Shared Video Memory Configuration?

hi AnonymousK,

Welcome to the Forums.

When you check system properties, are you getting a Total Memory: 4GB (2328GB Usable) or similar?
- if this is your case, the problem might lie on the system's BIOS. By default, the system automatically allocates all the physical RAM that it could use but if you have integrated graphics, this BIOS automatically share and allocate some of the RAM to the GPU to improve its performance.
- If you don't have a memory remmaping feature in the BIOS that controls how much RAM is allocated to the GPU, this is most likely a limitation of the system.

Another thing is the Physical Address Extension (PAE) that the OS uses to utilize system memory. Since you're using a 64bit version of Windows, this feature is already enabled. In some cases, you need to use a PAE Patch to correct the total memory reported above.

Best regards,
neokenchi

hello everybody, I've recently installed an additional 2GB ram module and upgraded system memory to 4GB. My graphics adapter has 256MB dedicated memory, and that was ALL of the memory allocated for graphics when I had 2GB (1 DIMM) in total. After the upgrade, system allocates an additional ~1.2GB ram for graphics, AND I couldn't find a way to PREVENT SHARING of system memory. BIOS doesn't provide any options, installed driver doesn't allow anything like that. QUESTION:How can I prevent sharing of physical memory for graphics? 256MB dedicated memory is enough for me.  you can find my system info below:SystemManufacturer LENOVOModel 2746A18   (SL500)Processor Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU P8600 @ 2.40GHzTotal amount of system memory 4,00 GB RAMSystem type Microsoft Windows 7 (6.1) Ultimate Edition 32-bit Service Pack 1 (Build 7601)  GraphicsDisplay adapter type NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GSTotal available graphics memory 1535 MBDedicated graphics memory 256 MBDedicated system memory 0 MBShared system memory 1279 MBDisplay adapter driver version 7.15.11.7930Secondary monitor resolution 1680x1050Primary monitor resolution 1920x1080DirectX Version 11.0 BiosVersion 6AET58WWDate 05/29/2009DMI Version 2.5

Answer:adjusting shared video memory

It's actually not sharing it.  Windows 7 32-bit just makes it look like it is.

i have vista, p5n32-sli deluxe mobo, 3.4 pentium d 4gb ram (2.8 usable 32bit) nvidia 8800ultra, physx 128, audigy x-fi extreme music,

i was wondering how i can adjust shared video ram, becausei definetly dont need it and i have actually been getting low ram messages which should be impossible. the ram started being shared after i upgraded from XP.

Answer:how to adjust shared video memory

Most high end PCI express cards like yours don't use shared memory.
If you are using 32 bit Vista, you may be having a problem with
having too much memory installed.
I beleive 32 bit systems can only handle a total of 4 GB addressable memory.
With the video card memory, you are over that limit.
You might want to try it with 2 or 3 GB and see if you lose that error.

How will i know if my computer uses shared video memory?

Answer:How will i know if my computer uses shared video memory?

check the back of your computer, and if your monitor is connected to the main area (not a pci or agp card), then you're using shared video memory

This isn't particular to the Y510, per se, but I have a question about 32-bit OS memory addressing (Vista in particular) and shared video memory (X3100 graphics accelerator). I have 4GB of memory installed in my Y510. Out of that 4GB, Vista can "recognize" all 4GB but can only address 3GB, leaving approximately 1GB of memory "left over" that can't be used by the operating system. Does the dynamic shared video memory used by the X3100 integrated graphics come from the 3GB portion that the OS uses or from the 1GB leftover portion that can't be addressed by 32-bit Vista? It would be good if it came from the unused portion but I am not sure if this is the case.Message Edited by lorneking on 09-01-2008 01:48 AM

Answer:Shared video memory question

Due to 32bit windows limitations it can't see more than 3-3.5 Gb of RAM.Memory adressing is made so that adressing touches upper gigabyte of RAM. That means that every new device will eat up memory from upper gigabyte and it even above it if you have many devices - you can even have 2,5 GB available of 4 installed GB.Video memory eats physical RAM but according to logic i's adressing doesn't hurt lower gigabytes. That means that shared video memory is taken from that gigabyte that is not in use.Woo-hoo !!
