XP Log In password request

Question: XP Log In password request

Just upgraded from W2K to XP. In W2K I managed to get rid of the password request so that the system could bootup in my absence. In XP setup, I declined a password, but the request comes up, and the system won't boot until press Return/Enter key. Any ideas about getting rid of the request entirely?
Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: XP Log In password request

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello friends,

I just installed xp pro on a laptop, downgraded from vista.

I know all accounts should be passworded so I gave the administrator account a password.

The problem is, when windows boots up, it goes directly to the desktop. It does not ask for a password.

I went to users to see if it added a new account. It only shows administrator that is passworded and the guest which is turned off.

How can I fix this?

Answer:xp does not request password

Out of curiosity, if you were to click START, then RUN, then type in:

control userpasswords2 (press enter)

Then go to the advanced tab, then click "Manage Passwords".

Do you have any entries there? If so, remove them. Also, make sure the "local" account has a password. This should be the account you created when windows booted to the EULA screen. Typically you should use Local as the user name. That way, administrator is the main account.

I am running Vista home premium SP 2 and use outlook 2003, SP3 with 2 profiles. I have been using this for the last 6 months. Every 2 to 3 months outlook gets really sluggish after you have opened 4 to 6 items sequentialy. If outlook is closed and re-opened, it is fine for another 4 to 6 items.
I found a help item which suggested resetting outlook to original settings in the help "detect & repair" which worked fine and I could reimport the original .pst files.
However, the last time I did this, the .pst file requested a password although I have never used one.
I now cannot access any of my old e-mails or contacts which I normaly import using the outlook facility, but is now stopped for needing a password.
I have tried the e-mail setup password that I use but this does not work.
Any idea's would be welcome!!!

As you just joined and were required to read the rules when doing so it should be fresh in your mind that we have a rule against helping with issues regarding passwords. Please see here for a copy of the rules: http://www.techguy.org/rules.html

One thing I can say is that when you create a new PST file it asks if you want to set a password, you must have chosen to do so last time; that step can be skipped if you want to avoid this in the future.

Also, for future reference you posted in the wrong section. Web and Email would have been more appropriate for an email program question as opposed to Networking. I'll move this post there but the same rule applies so I must close the thread.

My computer has now started to ask for a password, which I just hit the enter key and I'm in, but it never used to do this. What made it start doing this? Also, when I try to close down, I used to get just the three icons, now I have to choose from the drop down menu? Why? Not a drama, but a little annoying, help would be appreciated.

Hello all, I'm starting to learn how to use the apps on Windows 8, and am currently trying to sync my Facebook account with it. I set everything up, but as you can see on these images I uploaded, it keeps asking me to update my password (which I already tried on several windows) and it just keeps saying for me to wait a few minutes, despite already waiting hours for it to sync.

For some reason this morning I was asked for a password in order to get into my PC. I have never put a password on it. Eventually I managed to create another user and get into my system and create a password for the original user to obtain access to my e-mails. What I now need to do is remove the requirement for a password on that user; so that other members of my family will have easy access to the PC. I have tried System Restore to no effect. Thanks

Hi yellowho, and welcome to the Lenovo User Community!

Lenovo doesn't set a password, that will most likely have been done by someone at your school. You need to ask them for the password.

Note that the Community Rules forbid discussion of ways to defeat passwords, but it's OK to talk about how to use passwords you know.

Hope this helps!

Further to my previous posting. The problem hasn't gone away after all; however I have managed to pin the cause of the problem to be my Maxtor external hard disc. I use this disc for periodic backups of various parts of my main hard disc. When I want to use it I plug in the power cable before I switch on the system and this seeems to create the problem; if I connect the power after starting the system all seems to work OK but means I give an extra power jolt to the system which is not what I want to do. I have just purchased my first win7 system and I am trying to connect it to a hardwired network with 8 other XP Pro SP3 systems. My problem is that the win7 machine sees all of the XP machines and I can go to each one and transfer files. The XP machines see the Win7 machine but I cannot connect to it, it keeps asking for a password. All systems are using Administrator rights. Any idea where this password comes from? I have tried everything.

Bill Meyer

Answer:Password request from Win7

You need to disable simple file sharing on the XP machines. Also check under the Advanced Sharing options in Win 7 and make sure that password protected sharing is turned off on both the Work/Home page and the public file sharing page. Don't forget to add "Everyone" to the sharing permissions on the Windows 7 machine.

After going through all of that if you are still having file access problems try doing this registry adjustment on the Win 7 machine with the problem.

Solution is really easy just modify one key in registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
create or modify 32-bit DWORD: LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy
set the value to: 1

You can also try the following procedure on the XP machine.
Goto... Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Local Security Policy > Local Policies > Security Options

Scroll down to... Network Access: Sharing and security model for local accounts

Select... Guest only and not Classic. I checked on XP machine and Guest seems to be the default.

Suddenly those silly promps for user name and password go away when accessing Win 7 share from XP machine and it behaves more like XP file sharing without asking for Usernames and Passwords.

It will not cause security risk (except all users on same network can access shared files).

My computer crashed and I had to restore my O/S. Since then when I boot my computer every morning, I don't get my usual login prompt. I'm the only user, but I still prefer to log in after a cold boot. I did NOT choose to forego the request for password. I just checked UAC options to be sure.

BTW after restoring Vista, I turned off UAC because I remember hearing years ago that it causes problems. [I don't know if that's still true.] But then I decided to turn it back on a day or two later. It was after I turned UAC back on that I stopped getting a login prompt.

TIA for any help.

mmm - Whole thing sounds a little suspect... Did the person who gave you the laptop know the password; or did they "acquire it" illegally? I hope this does not breach nay forum rules. TIA

Answer:Password request when sending email

Authentication issue I guess - have you changed your network password recently or using a different PC that has cached passwords? It may be trying to autheticate you with the old password (or a cached password) and failing therefore asking for your password, which when given correctly allows you to carry on. Log-off... log-on usually solves if it is a changed password related issue.

Win 7, Office 2007. After adding new e-mail addresses I now get a small center screen box asking me to enter my Network Password to one of my e-mail accounts. Clicking "ok" or "cancel" or "x" will turn the box off temporarily with it returning after a couple of minutes. Very annoying and now very boring. I?ve heard that this is a known problem but the guy who told me didn?t know how to resolve said problem. How, please, using baby steps as my computer skills are very limited.

Recently I received reset requests on two of my hotmail accounts (four requests on one of the accounts and at least three on the other). I have not requested a reset. This just started within the past week, as far as I know. Both my husband and I have a number of other accounts but have not seen anything on those. Does anyone know what might be going on there? What should I do besides delete the requests? Thanks for any help you can give me! CAgirl

Answer:Hotmail password reset request

Sounds like someone is trying to get your password and account info?
When you want to get account info, you get an e-mail to the accounts registered e-mail adress. But since the account is registrated to your e-mail adress, they can't simply get it that way. And that is a good thing.

hello, i've just installed 2000 pro and i'm wondering if i can disable the username and password logon at startup. i would like to be able to switch on my machine and leave the room without having to wait for me to press ok to continue booting up. ????

Answer:win200 pro - request for password logon at startup

Once Windows 2000 has started goto the start menu then settings & control panel. Select users & passwords & in this menu you get the option to have the machine default to asking for a password or default to logging in a standard user. If you select log in same user each time, you will have to provide your password only once at this stage & Windows 2000 will automatically log you in each time until you say otherwise.

Hi. Can anyone help please? I'm being driven mad by a constantly repeated request appearing on my screen to Enter Network Password - (it's happened again as I write this!) It occurs every couple of minutes. Its the small window that contains my email server (duly completed) the user name (also completed) and the Password (which is completed and asterisked out)It has an 'check box' option to save this password in the password list - but this makes no difference at all and the more you check that particular box, it just keeps coming back, once you click 'OK'. I have a 'Local Area Connection' which delivers broadband - and it's reported as being o.k. I work a lot through MS Outlook (which picks up 4 or so mail boxes routed to it). I'm running WinXP. I think it's something to do with this - but just can't be sure. I've been through every menu. Any assistance would be most appreciated. Thanks.

As of late , after awaking from sleep mode, the Action Center is requesting me
to re-enter my password. I am clueless as to why this is happening.

The only change is that I cancelled my MS Office 365 [P6] subscription.

Maybe the unlinking? of [[email protected]] from [[email protected]]
is causing this behavior. Dunno?

I had used the onmicrosoft as my Win8 login account and had a few problems with that.
So I deleted that 'user' and created a new one with the .live email.

But that was more than a year ago. It's not the end of the world or anything, just a
bit annoying and worrisome that it may be a 'bogus' pop-up in Action Center.

TIA for any help.
Windunce

Answer:Password request frequency is slightly alarming

In action center, go to change action center settings and in security messages uncheck Microsoft account. Also if you haven't already done so, go into user accounts in your control panel, click on make changes to my account in PC settings and you can disable requiring a password when waking your PC.

Hi,

I am using a Win 7 Standard User account and Built-in Admin is activated.

I just want to delete/hide the bottom portion of the UAC message (please refer to screenshot) where it asks for the admin password. Since i don't have one, I just leave it blank and click Yes.

Previous UAC messages didn't ask for the password, just the upper portion.

Appreciate the help. Thank you.

JBN

Answer:Hide/Remove UAC Admin Password Request

Hello JBN,

When you are logged into a standard user account, then this is normal to get a UAC prompt whenever you try to run or do anything that requires the elevated rights of an administrator. A standard user must enter an administrator's password first.

Other than being logged into a normal administrator account (not built-in Admin) to not have to enter a password, you could use the tutorial below create an elevated shortcut in your built-in Admin account that the standard account can use and not get a UAC prompt at all.

Elevated Command Prompt Shortcut

Hope this helps,

I've got a problem when I try to log on to "secure" websites. I get asked for my password; I fill it in, click on the "continue" button, and nothing happens. The little blue progress bar at the bottom of the screen fails to materialise; sometimes the cursor develops an eggtimer icon, and eventually I get a timed-out message; but most times, nothing happens at all. The "continue" button changes colour, as if recognising that I have clicked on it, but nothing more.So far this has happened on Hotmail (so I can't get to my emails there), and my account with Amazon (so I can't check on my orders). I can still get through to this site, which is something!I've not changed any settings on my computer, so I don't know why this is happening. I run Win98, on an ancient Dell, and have current Norton virus protection which has not alerted me to anything untoward. Help, please!

Hello Expert,
Last week, I stayed at rented place for a week. To protect my Laptop, I created a user login with password. In mean while I also deleted the the guest and adminstrator account (default account). I donot know why...
now I removed the password from user login. so I can access the machine without waiting for autentication...

But today when I tried to install a software, it is asking me for password of Toshiba account.

upto my best knowldege, I have never created a Toshiba account...all my accounts are without password..

From internet I found this software to read the password of window...(opcrack)..
This software is showing four account on the machine(Guest, Administrator, dkengg,ASpnet) without passport.

there is no clue of Toshiba....and on control panel->useraccount->(there is only one account dkengg) because I have deleted all other last week..

any clue on Toshiba password...

I have bought this laptop from Carphone warehouse ..
so if you need any autentication, then plesase let me know..
I can provide all the copy of bills..

Cheers,
DK

Answer:Toshiba Password request on Satellite L300-16L

At first I must say this is user-to-user forum so this with bills and copies will not work here. Maybe you should contact your local dealer or authorized Toshiba service.

I really don't know what you have done but fact is that Toshiba notebooks are not delivered with any passwords and restrictions. When you get new notebook everything is ?open? and you can create own accounts (during setup procedure at first start-up) and passwords.

I am afraid you have done something wrong and now you get this password request.
Can you, maybe sent a screenshot of your desktop when this request is shown?

When logging in with a user account, I get a request for the administrator password every time (which I deny).
Sadly, I can't make a screenshot, but the info is something like this:

---
Program name - File Operation
Verified publisher - Microsoft Windows
File origin - Hard drive on this PC

Certificate information:
Certificate purpose : windows hardware driver verification
Issued by : Microsoft Windows Verification PCA
---

Is this ok to allow? It looks legitimate, but I'm in doubt because
- I think it appeared 1st time while browsing
- I don't see where any hardware change might have come from, except maybe plugging in a phone in the USB

Thanks

Answer:Unexpected request for admin password on login

krek, welcome to Sevenforums!

First, make sure all windows updates are installed. This ensures the certificate is actually from microsoft. More than likely, it is a driver trying to be installed for a device, such as the phone you installed. If you are worried, do a full scan with your updated antivirus program. You can check this by unplugging all devices from your computer except for mouse and keyboard and see if it still pops up. But make sure your mouse and keyboard drivers are installed, as it might be for them. You can automatically get device drivers from windows (safe): Device Installation Settings - created by Brink

Hi,Equipment:Lenovo R61i Win XP (Polish ver)  On turning on the computer  I get a window titled "fingerprint logon" asking me to create a logon password. When I cancel this I get another window (different style) asking me to register fingerprints for the fingerprint security. Both these windows are in English so I presume they come via the Lenovo Thinkvantage application (which is in English) rather than directly from Windows as anything from windows is in Polish. My question is how do I get rid of these two windows as I do not wish to set a password or register fingerprints at the moment. I have gone into the Fingerprint Control Center and disabled fingerprint logon in favour of Normal Windows Logon, but without effect. Its not a critical thing, just a nuisance that slows down the boot up. Any info greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Loz

Hi - I got a new computer and so tried to clear the hard drive on my old Toshiba laptop to sell it on. It's a Toshiba A-210, and is about three years old.

I put the "Restore Factory Settings Disk" in and tried to follow the instructions on the CD sleeve. However, the instructions didn't match the options given, so I did something where I thought I was clearing the HDD. This seemed to go ok, but when I tried to start it up again it loads up a black "MS-DOS" type screen asking for a password.

The only password I've set up on the computer was for my user profile, and it isn't accepting that. If I try to continue without the password the computer switches off.

Tried googling and it could be a BIOS password, I think, but I've never set one of those. The only suggestions I could find for fixing it involved pressing one of the "F" keys and going through to Windows, but I can't get a response using the "F" keys. On the Toshiba website it mentioned that I'd need to have it fixed by one of their authorised places, but I don't want to spend any money on it, since I was only trying to clear the hard drive before trying to sell it on or scrapping it.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Will my hard drive have been cleared? There's nothing really confidential on there, but I'd like it as clear as possible, I don't really mind if its working, as I would consider scrapping it for parts.

Answer:Request for BIOS password after attempting to clear Hard Drive?

Hello Katy

After reading your thread I cannot understand what you have done to ?lock up? your computer.
Fact is that BIOS password cannot be set by mistake.

When BIOS password will be set it must be written two times before it will be enabled.

What to do now? Fact is that BIOS password cannot be deleted by some key combination or some simple trick. BIOS password is most important security feature and must offer maximum on BIOS protection.
You can sell your notebook without HDD too. On eBay I saw many notebooks that will be offered without HDD due to data protection reasons. HDD can be exchanged for less money and it is not so important hardware component.

In the whole story I see one problem only: BIOS password. You can offer notebook a little bit cheaper and new owner can pay for password removal.

It is not easy to give you proper answer. I just want to be a little bit realistic.

Hi everyone, hope someone can help.

I have an Equium P300-16T.
To start with it would not start, just the media lights & power light.

Found that the upper ram module is no longer working.
With only ram in lower slot laptop will start. Tested various combinations of modules but unit will only start with the lower module filled.

At least it starts i thought but now after the toshiba screen i now get a bios screen asking me for a password.
On searching the web i see that this is quite a random problem.
The unit is out of warranty.

Any suggestions please

Thanks
JIM

Answer:Equium P300-16T didn't start up - Now Bios password request

Hi mate

Unfortunately, it looks like the notebook asks for the BIOS password (who knows why?) which is not known to you?
In such case you will need to ask an ASP technician for help.
The guys could remove the unknown BIOS password using an special procedure.

As far as I know it?s not possible to remove the unknown BIOS password without an help from ASP?.

My hp 522c crashed- I don't know cause. In puttering around I managed to go from the Blue HP Invent screen to one with french language requests in the background, much like a menu, and a box in the foreground requesting my password which I don't know. Any assistance and help in getting this diagnosed and fixed would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Windows 98 HP 522c French background and English request for PASSWORD

Welcome to TechSpot

This looks to me like a setting in your BIOS. Don't know your PC, but the most frequent keys to hit at startup are Del, F1, F2 or F10.
Check around in BIOS for a Language setting and change that to English or whatever you need.

I've got several machines in a small group of machines, the machine doing the Disk Sharing is a win2k machine, others are win7 home premium, xp's, and even more win2k machines. They have all worked with the shared disk, lets call it \\c1a\Myfile mounted on the remote machines O: drive, all have worked perfectly for many years, until this week !! Monday or Tuesday, all of a sudden two win7 machines, when trying to mount the shared disk, come up with "Enter network password", while a third win7 machine mounts it fine.

There is no "network password", the old win2k platform did not have any network password. The only clue so far is that if one goes into the win7 system under the adapter, and "Client for Microsoft Networks" is clicked, the error happens, if not clicked, no error happens (and it never connects either..). A third win7 machine, works fine (so far...) I've gone so far as to do a complete system restore, and as soon as the network is activated, the error occurs. (I've turned off the automatic updates for now...)

Help, I'm at my wit's end on this !! Anybody have a solution ?

Answer:Solved: Some win 7 machines suddenly request "Network Password"

Thanks to Kevin for the fix!!!

Home Premium does not have the local security policy manager, so you need to do it through your regedit command.

I just did this and got it to work and I would consider myself a novice at this stuff.

So here is the regedit way: Click Start - type in regedit at the search prompt - open regedit. For safety, make a copy first!!

Click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE then SYSTEM then CurrentControlSet then Control then LSA.

On the right half there should be a bunch of names and types.

You need to add a new DWORD to the list so anywhere in the right half right click and hover over
"new" and select DWORD (mine said DWORD 32-bit value).

Cut and paste this in the name of the new DWORD you are adding without the quotes "LmCompatibilityLevel".

Now if you look under the column Data it should read 0x00000001 (0). This needs to be 0x00000001 (1).

To change the 0 to a 1, right click on the LmCompatibilityLevel name you just added and select Modify.
Change the Value data: from 0 to 1.

My Base was checked as Hexadecimal. Click OK. Close out of the Regedit.

Reboot your machine and whalla, it should work. I saw a couple of other threads that recommended changing
the value to 2, but 1 worked for me.

This is the fix that worked, a single entry in the Registry !! "

Norton Internet Security has been reporting that it blocks an intrusion attempt from a variety of addresses and reports the risk name as either HTTP Tidserv Request or HTTPS Tiderv 2 Request. I get a few unrequested webpages, but the main symptom is the warning messages from Norton. In attempting to fix the problem myself, I learned that I can not boot to Safe Mode because my system hangs at amdagp.sys and returns to the "how would you like your computer to boot" screen. I think this is an unrelated problem, but thought I'd mention it.Thanks! I appreciate your time.DDS (Ver_10-03-17.01) - NTFSx86 Run by Ann Nymous at 23:19:25.80 on Sun 04/18/2010Internet Explorer: 8.0.6001.18702Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.2047.1534 [GMT -5:00]AV: Norton Internet Security *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated) {E10A9785-9598-4754-B552-92431C1C35F8}FW: Norton Internet Security *enabled* {7C21A4C9-F61F-4AC4-B722-A6E19C16F220}============== Running Processes ===============C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost -k DcomLaunchsvchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcssvchost.exesvchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\Program Files\BroadJump\Client Foundation\CFD.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpztsb04.exeC:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\PhotoSmart\Photo Imaging\Hpi... Please help. My computer is constantly being attacked (HTTP Tidserv Request & HTTPS Tidserv Request 2). I do not know how to keep this from happening. I've been letting others use my laptop (my first mistake), and about a week ago this all started happening. Needless to say, I'm concerned as I don't know how much damage these attacks can do. My Norton Anti-Virus/Internet Security has been blocking the attacks, but they come constantly from several attacking IP addresses and URLS. Below please find my dds.txt and attached my attach.txt and gmerlog.log as instructed. Thank you in advance for your assistance, and I look forward to hearing from someone.DDS (Ver_10-03-17.01) - NTFSx86 Run by MY NAME at 20:01:23.87 on Wed 08/25/2010Internet Explorer: 8.0.6001.18702 BrowserJavaVersion: 1.6.0_12Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.2.1252.1.1033.18.1014.132 [GMT -4:00]============== Running Processes ===============C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost -k DcomLaunchsvchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcssvchost.exesvchost.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\hpq\HP Wireless Assistant\HP Wireless Assistant.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxpers.exeC:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh.exeC:\Program Files\HP\QuickPlay\QPService.exeC:\Progra... Good evening. Take a trip to this webpage for download links and instructions for running Combofix by sUBs.* Please be aware that this tool may require the PC to be rebooted so close any programs you have open before you start. When CF has finished, it will produce a log - C:\ComboFix.txt - copy and paste it into your next reply. Let me know how the PC is behaving.* There are two points to note from the instructions page:1) The Recovery Console. It is recommended that you install this as, in certain circumstances, it may be the difference between a successful repair and a reformat. If you are uncertain as to whether or not you already have the Recovery Console installed, simply run CF and it will prompt you if it does not detect it.CF will complete some, but not all, of it's removal tasks without the installation of the Console so, should you choose not to allow the installation, you may not get the results you hoped for.2) Disabling your Anti-Virus.CF has been the victim of false-positive detections on occasion and a resident AV may incorrectly identify and delete part of the tool which won't do it much good. If you don't disable your AV, you may not get the results you hoped for either.

Bad Request. Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand. Size of a request header field exceeds server limit. Cookie /n

I have read about some fixes in Google. Some I don't trust. Some I don't understand.

I have used ATF cleaner to clear away the cookies and all the things it clears.

I cannot reach Photobucket using Google Chrome. I can reach Photobucket with IE9, but IE9 is incompatible with another site I visit daily.

Sure hope you can help me. Thanks a lot.
