I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This may or may not work depending on whether or not your system supports APMS. Start regedit, and make your way to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop] and in the right pane look for the key PowerOffActive. Change the value to 1.

Man this is getting frustrating. At one particular website, fantasygames.sandboxplus.com/..., Firefox won't load the pages. Almost every time, I get the screen in my attached picture. But then I usually hit try again or reload and it usually loads right the second time. Every once in a while it takes a 2nd or 3rd try to load. Since I have dial-up, this is really frustrating because I hate waiting on it. Many times, the page is already like 95% loaded and then the Problem Loading Page screen shows up, like out of no where. And it's not like this site's pages take a long time to load either, they take about the same time to load as most other sites. Is there any way to fix this?

This problem has plagued me through different installs of XP. What happens is at some random time for some unknown reason the - button is spammed. I don't press the button but it still happens randomly.

I've actually met someone else with this exact same problem and he didn't have anything close to the same hardware setup as I do except for using XP. Anyone have any ideas on how to stop this?

I usually just deal with it but I was trying to watch a file and the spamming - kept lagging the audio further and further behind. It just drove me over the top so I want to do something about it.

I thought I would add that I'm using the Saitek keyboard with the lighting behind the keys (first version). So, any ideas on how I could fix this?

Have you tried another keyboard? It sounds like the Windows key may be sticking (opening the on-screen keyboard does not disable the main keyboard). Also rule out malware by running a/v and a/s scans. Did she perhaps install a hot key program?

Hello all,
I am working on my sons computer and he is having a problem I have seen in other posts. He gets a yellow triangle in his tool bar that pops up and says spyware has been detected on his computer. His wallpaper has an overlay of a web page warning about spyware. I have been able to get rid of all of that but I am still getting pop up windows, Blue screen of death warning about Trojans, Mailbox like window warning about spam, etc.

Any help will be appreciated. The following is my hijack log.

Hey, everytime I go into CS:S the server that I try to join says in the menu that there are (for example) 11/20 users playing. I click on it and a box comes up saying "there are currently no users playing on this server". Please help. I've tried with many servers with no luck. It only works occasionaly but only after trying like 15 servers. I would like a consistent CS:S.
Thanx

Download CW-Shredder at the link below:
http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWShredder.exe

Download to the desktop http://www.derbilk.de/SpSeHjfix110.zip and then
right click a blank part of desktop & select new folder, call it spfix
unzip the file into that folder

Disconnect from the net and Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.
Run 'SpSeHjfix'. and click on "Start Disinfection".
When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process.
The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.

If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers it will say system clean and not go on to next stage

Now run the Shredder - Hit The FIX button!

Reboot and post a fresh HJT log and the log that was created by 'SpSeHjfix'.

I have IE7 beta 2, and its been great for a while, but now there will be times when it will just spontaneously close, so i'll be on a page, and then IE will just close. does anyone know what could be wrong?

Answer:IE 7 annoying problem

It's IE- what do you expect? Seriously, the beta release has some issues to deal with. It crashed on me switching between Web pages. Although it has only crashed once since having it, but then again, I rarely use it, except for sites that require it for logging in. I use Netscape 8.1

Hi all,

I was trying to install a game (COD 2), when that little window that comes up when you're about to run an executable program or software from a disk came up. This is the main problem; I don't know what that window is called.

It usually gives you two options: run setup.exe, or open folder to view files. It came up for COD 2, and for some reason this time, i clicked the option for "always do this for games and software" so that I'd never see that window again.

ಠ_ಠ

Of course, COD 2 blew my computer up without even getting to the first install scren, 'cause it's old, and then I looked online for a solution, and found one - you have to click the 'open folder to view files' option in that initial window and run the .exe file from there. Of course now I can't do that because I canceled out that window with the option to do it. Now it just goes straight to the error message and my computer freaks out.

If somebody on here could just help me out with some info on how to restore that option window, that would be great. Not only would I then be able to enjoy COD2, I'm sure there are countless other situations in which that window would prove useful.

Thanks.

Answer:S.O.S. - Really annoying problem

Do a System Restore. If you did the COD2 today pick a date/time before that in the system restore options.

Just in case.

Download Spybot, a spyware blocking program, available here
http://tomcoyote.org/SPYBOT/index1.php

Update it FIRST and then run the scan, and fix anything it automatically checks to be fixed. Don't worry about the rest of the entries (if any) for now.

Also be sure you have the latest updates from Windows Update, esp for Internet Explorer.

I have some files on an external hard drive which are supposed to be not read-only. When I go into windows explorer and into the properties it says they are read-only. So I turn off read-only and check to change all subfolders and files, apply then ok. I got back into the properties and it says they are read-only again. Anyone know what may be happening? I do have all administrator rights so that should't be the problem.

Thanks
Brent

Answer:A really annoying problem

Try using one of these programs:
CROA
Attribute Changer
Moveonboot

One of them should work at making those files normal and not read only. Even having admin access isn't the cure without those programs. Liz

I'm having a problem with IE7, though I'm not sure if it's IE7 actually causing it or something else. Either way it's extremely annoying and I hope someone here can help me sort it out.

It seems that about 85% of the time, when I go to a new website for the first time - i.e. from my favourites, a link, typing it in and pressing enter - I get the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" error page. I then click refresh and it loads straight up. Why won't it work first time round?

Answer:Annoying problem with IE7

Do you get the same problem by doing this

Click Start, All programs, Accessories, System tools and click on Internet Explore (No Addons)

Hey ladies and gents, hows things? I seem to be having a problem when I surf the net. OK say I log on to the net and I am surfing away for about 30-40mins it seems that the browser 'hangs' on me. Say I am on a sports website and I am done reading so say I type in bebo in the address bar...nothing happens(using Firefox by the way)in the bottom left corner it says 'waiting for bebo.com' but it will stay like that for about 10mins. So I close firefox and start it up again and the homepage does not even load. Im running my laptop on a wireless connection. My PC has no problems using the same connection!! So I restart the comp which takes about 15mins(strange aswell so it is) this is my second time trying to post this lol.

OK I have a HP Compaq Presario C700 Notebook running Vista Home Premium SP1. Intel Pentium Dual Core 1.46GHz and 1GB RAM. 32bit Operating system aswell.

Virus checks have come up clean using avast. AVG comes up clean aswell, apart from some spyware that shows up but it is removed. I'm sure soemthing has to be nesting in the system somewhere!!
I dont really know what to do, it just started doing this about 2 weeks ago!

Sorry if i'm hard to read, I do not know the right terminology for the problem I'm having... I guess I'll just do my best and hope you understand :P

Recently, every program I've been running in full screen, will randomly minimize and I'll have to maximize it again, only to have it minimize about a minute later. This, as you can guess, is incredibly annoying when playing games in full-screen, and i have no idea what could be causing this.

Also, In windowed mode it does the same thing, except it doesn't minimize entirely, the window just becomes "unselected". Here's an example:

I'll be typing in an instant message (not paying attention really, I hardly ever do :P ) and the window will become "unselected" and, not realizing this, will cause me to type a paragraph without even noticing I'm not typing anything at all! So I need to click somewhere in the window to resume typing the same thing I did about a minute ago...

Does anyone know what the heck could be wrong here? it mainly happens while playing games (windowed and fullscreen). This, as the title suggests, is a seriously annoying problem that I would love to have fixed soon :)

Also, i would love to reformat, but i dont have an OS cd or any of my drivers backed up, so yeah =/

Answer:A very annoying problem...

this is where the o/s cd comes in handy. hmmm since you dont have any o/s cd, have you tried scanning for any spyware at all? if not and if your internet works fine, check out www.majorgeeks.com and download spybot and adware SE. if you dont have any anti-virus programs check out AVG, a really good one.

afterwards install all programs, update them, and then run spybot and adware SE.

I have, for the second time, installed IE7 and, for the second time, it has an annoying practice of opening (unbidden) when ever I click on My Computer, My Documents or several other Windows XP icons - one result being that I have to close IE as well as the the other item that I have opened. And this is saying nothing about the possible security problem always inherent in the use of any iteration of IE. I only have the lousy thing because some sites will open only with IE. Is there any simple solution for this problem? Of course, I can always just uninstall it and revert to IE6. I have tried using Windows own Unhelp site, to no avail.

Howdy all,

I've got a problem downloading files and its driving me crazy!

I can download most files okay - .exes, .mp3s, etc. But any file associated with MS Office is a whole different kettle of fish. Trying to download Excel and Powerpoint files, with Internet Explorer the download reaches 99% and then just stops. With Firefox, its 98%. With Opera, its once again 99%.

Windows firewall is disabled. I can't see any appropriate security settings to change. I'm using a user account in Windows with no extra processes loading on startup - so I can't see what other application could be stopping the download...

The oddest thing is that although I can't download from this one particular site that I need to, if I download the files via another PC and e-mail them to myself, I can login to the webmail and download them problem-free that way.

Any ideas anyone...? I'm exasperated.

Hi , this is a repost for an old problem I had , solved , now its back again.

When i try and watch online videos from sites such as youtube/liveleak/ebaumsworld , the buffering times are ridiculously slow.

Ive had this problem before and used system mechanic which seemed to solve it , now im thinking it wasnt system mech that solved it as the problem is back and system mech wont fix it this time.

I use avast antivirus , ive done a.v checks , spyware checks , used ccleanner etc but nothing works.

ive done online speed checks which record half the bandwidth i should be getting.

Any advice / info would be great , thanks.

Question: annoying problem

I think I installed the msn toolbar for some reason, then had to do system restore for something, and recently when I click on a desktop link, it has this message

'#msntb_toolbar_full_name# is unable to load its config file.
If you have recently upgraded to a newer version of the #msntb_toolbar_full_name# try restarting computer or reinstalling the #msntb_toolbar_full_name'

I tried reinstalling the msn toobar, but it said it was already on the computer, and then i tried to remove it using add/remove programs, but it says verify the patch package exists and that you can access it etc etc.

If anyone has any fresh idea I'd appeciate it. Gets annoying having to press ok to that error message everytime i try to open something.
thanks a lot

Whenever I click on my folders, they used to simply open. Nowadays when I click on a folder, the search panel opens. In order to open the folder, I have to right click and choose "open" from the drop down menu. (I have also noticed that "search" is listed at the top of the drop down menu, but "open" used to be at the top.) How can I get this changed back to simply open a folder by just clicking on it? I don't know how this got changed in my system. I just know it is very annoying. Can somebody please help this newbie?

Answer:A Really Annoying Problem...

Try a different keyboard. You may also want to try a different type of keyboard (ie: ps2 or usb).

If you are able to get into the BIOS, you could try setting it to default. You may also want to try clearing the CMOS.

Hi lawlbear. . .

Welcome to the Tech Support Forum - Vista Support!

The first thing that I noticed from your choices is the I386 file - which belongs to XP.

Where was this version of Vista Ultimate downloaded from... and what about your product key code.... for the Vista upgrade?

EDIT: What is on Drive c:? What was the purpose of the registry fixer - and what product did you use?

I am having a problem: everytime my computer connects to a wireless network it crashes my other computer. I tried using two different USB wireless cards, installing, uninstalling, and reinstalling antivirus software and software for the wifi cards, and shutting down my firewalls. I've also disabled DHCP and then the wireless network worked fine (but obviously I dont get internet this way). I disabled XP's auto restart function for crashed and got a BSOD reading the following:

stop 0x00000001 (0x4E1551AD, 0X0000002, 0X0000000, 0X4E1551AD)

Here are my system specs:
CPU: HP a230n
Windows XP
2.08 ghz AMD Athlon Processor
512 MB DDR SDRAM memory
NVIDIA GeForce 4MX 64MB video card

in the event viewer:

Question: Annoying Problem

Wasn't quite sure where to put this: I just built a new box and for some reason whenever I start XP instead of the little ATI icon appearing in the systray (which I have it set to do under Display Properties, Options) the folder where I downloaded the most recent drivers pops up for some reason. If I close it and then go to display properties the ATI systray icon pops up, but only then. It's the same Radeon 9800 Pro I had in my old machine, and the old one worked as expected (both were using the 4.5 Cats). Any idea how to fix this?
Specs: 2.8C, IC7-Max3, Sapphire 9800 Pro, 1Gig OCZ 3200 EL. Thanks!

Edit: I'm using Powerstrip and have it set to start with Windows, but I had this in the old machine without experiencing this problem.

Answer:Annoying Problem

Reinstall the catalyst drivers and this time turn off your firewall or Vscan......

Select RUN type SERVICES.MSC and disable the 2 Ati services........

Hi there, long time lurker, first time poster.

My problem. My PC effectively died on me. I knew i had a hard drive error so i surmised this was the root of my problems. I purchased a new SATA drive. Windows then refused to install on this drive, crashing everytime i got anywhere on installation. I removed one of my RAM sticks as a start in testing if one of them (i have 3 * 512mb sticks) might be the problem. No more crashes. Now i have two new problems.

Firstly, my floppy disk drive (which of course i require to set up my SATA drive) isn't working properly. It shows its light all the time, even with no disk in it. It also refuses to read any dsk put in it.

Secondly, i swapped in an old IDE harddrive to see if i could use that as a boot drive and then use my chunky SATA drive for games, files, etc...

However, windows took about 8-12 hours to install (not sure exactly, i went to work) and then ran EXTREMELY slow when it was up. CPU usage was up to 100% opening a simply folder (windows explorer/system idle using 30%/70% between them)

Tried installing windows on the SATA drive whihc had a partial install on it (from before when it was crashing all the time). Again the install is taking ages. around 10 minutes for every "microsoft minute". half an hour has seen it go from "39 minutes to go" to "36 minutes to go".

I'm running quite a ninja machine so the speed issues aren't old hardware. its a athlon 64 CP... Read more

Answer:Annoying PC problem

Here are some possibilities. For your floppy, make sure the data connector is tight to the back of the floppy drive and to the motherboard. It might have come loose when you were working on the hard drives. Otherwise you can replace it with a new one as they are very inexpensive.

In your BIOS make sure the SATA controllers are enabled.

Check the IDE controller to which your IDE hard drive is connected to make sure it didn't get switched from DMA mode to the much slower PIO mode. Sometimes Windows will do this if the drive connected to it has problems. Check this in the Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager. If it is in PIO mode, you can try to switch it back right there. But it might not stay that way after a restart. Check it. If not, one way to fix it is to uninstall the controller and let Windows reinstall it after a restart. This actually worked for me but with an optical drive. So I've been dealing with this problem for a while now and just looking over it, but at this point in time I have to get it fixxed. It's kind of hard to explain theres no specific errors. All the things that I thought to be causing it have been fixxed, and I still have the same problem. I am or was MCP in 2000 pro so I had some direction but found no pot of gold.

My computer, running Win XP Home, won't allow applications/drivers to be installed because I do not have administrator privleges. However I have 3 administrator accounts I have made, attempting to solve this problem and have yet to uncover the "Administrator" account even with registry keys. I can edit the registry myself, but apps cannot. I am more than certain I have or had complete admin control as it worked for 2 years prior with no troubles.

I had origionally only noticed it with video drivers (likely only drivers I change often), thus I rolledback my drivers and oops I can't run open 3D apps and firefox lags my pc lol.

I've attempted to add the admin into registry nothing comes up on my "welcome screen". anti virus programs are of little use as I cannot install anything that writes to the registry. the ones I have donnot detect anything but they're nothin special. I've reinstalled xp sp2.

I do not have a XP disc, as I have a proprietary hp box and I had to borrow a disk to do a clean install on it. The cpu only came with the key on the side. I would try... Read more

Here is a problem that I hope some one can help me with. When I open any folder, it opens in a search window, and doesn?t show me what?s inside the folder. I have found that if I right click on the folder, at the top of the list of options, it says search. (Open) is further down the list. How can I change the list so that (OPEN) is back on top, so when I click on a folder, it opens the folder, and not a search widow??

Thanks for any advice

Answer:Not a big problem, just annoying

Hi, welcome to TSF.

When you right-click a folder, is Search in bold? (which means it's the default setting)

Try this XP registry fix to reset the default to Explore/Open. (8th one down - Folder Association fix)

Note: remember to backup (export) your registry in Start > Run > regedit before applying the fix in case it doesn't work.

You could change the association manually in Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File types > File Folder > Advanced, but the registry fix is easier.

Hello

Check the 'host' file go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

The right hand click on the file 'host' and click 'open' or 'open with' a box should appear, asking you what program you would like to open the host file with. Choose 'notepad'

It should look like the one below:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

Does it look like this?

I bought this laptop about 4 months ago. Lenovo G460, Windows 7, Intel Core i3 2.13Ghz, 2 GB RAM with nVidia GeForce 310M Graphic card.
Everything goes fine when I use it for documenting and multimedia.
However, when I executes an online game (named Dragonica SEA server) with a full screen, the windows seems to refresh by itself periodically, making the game to be minimized and go back to the desktop (The game is continued by manually clicking the taskbar with a hang time before it gets back into the program). As the playing time get longer, the time needed to be back into the game will be longer as well and in serious case, the computer hangs.
The problem is becoming serious now that sometimes the explorer might not responding and terminates the execution of the game. It's getting more and more annoying that I could get an auto refresh every 15 minutes, making an uncomfortable gaming experience.
Could someone help me on this?

Answer:Need help on this annoying problem.

When this happens to me, it's because of my email program posting reminders for my calendar (which takes focus away from the game).

When playing the game, terminate all other running programs and see if that helps. Terminate anything in the Task Bar, and anything in the System Tray (with the exception of your antivirus).

I have a DELL Dimension desktop computer running windows XP. The annoying problem I have is that if I try plugging in any external device like a memory stick/ flash drive to any of the spare USB ports, windows does not detect the device. It does not register in “My computer” window or found using windows explorer, and there are no error messages.
However if I now restart the computer with the memory sticks or external devices already plugged into the USB ports there is no problem, and all items are picked up by windows and given a drive reference. (drive F, H, I etc). So long as I do not switch the computer off I can unplug and reinsert the item and still gain access. All that happens is a red question mark appears against the drive icon in “ My computer” window when the device is removed and I go back into “My computer” The red question mark disappears as soon as I plug the device back into the USB port and again open “My computer” window.
There does not appear to be any problems with the USB controllers and associated host controllers or root hubs, all return message “The device is working correctly”, leaving me to think something may have accidentally been switched off by me or during one of the many automatic windows updates from Microsoft, preventing scanning of the USB ports for new devices after the computer has booted up. Can anyone help me resolve this annoying problem?

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Why_Windows_xp_does_not_recognize_flash_drive

Once you get everything set up, perhaps you can run a back up of documents and settings and then back up your registry. Erunt (if you don' have/use it already) is a good program that will back up your registry and place the back up in C:\Windows, where it can be accessed by a tech in the case of a situation in which he/she can't get into Windows. Each back up happens on boot up. If you do install Erunt, I recommend downloading and installing Eruntgui 1.5. This will add a graphical user interface to Erunt, so that you can decide and set the back up properties more easily, such as how many back ups to keep. Kind of important as I think it's set to keep 30 of them which gets into the GBs of info on most machines. I don't boot very oftenly, so I have mine set for 5. Even though there aren't many of them, they will be sufficiently spaced out to guarantee that one of them should be good in the off chance of a problem...

Question: Annoying Problem

Hello.

I have been having very strange and annoying problem with my comp for the past couple of weeks. In a nutshell, my computer keeps randomly turning off.
Especially when im playing World of Warcraft. It has Turned off while ive been doing other things and while im not doing anything at all. Logically i thought it was the power supply fizzling out or malfunctioning, so i went out and bought a 350 volt $40 power supply to see if that fixed the problem. Well it hasn't.

Although it seams i can play longer before the comp tunrs off. Would this type of problem be the powersupply not being strong enough for my computer componants or somethign more serious like my Cpu going bad or video card going bad?

I have no idea what to try next except to for maybe buying a 450 or 500 volt PSU. My computer isnt a top end machine at all, i built it 4 years ago and back then it wasnt top of the line. My previous PSU was a 400 volt which lasted me about 2 years before i started having this problem.

I have also had a few of those random blue screens of death happen and have no idea why. Would these be related somehow?

I have a intel Pent. 4 dual core cpu with 3.0 Ghz, 2.99 ghz
and 1 gb of ram.
My VCard is an old Nvidia 6800 Gt 512 MB
If anyong has had a smilair problem and knows what or has any advice on what to do please help me, this is driving me nuts.

Answer:Annoying Problem

It could be that your system/CPU is overheating. Check to see if all fans are working properly and whether the CPU heatsink is seated properly.

Also clean all the dust and dirt that will have accumulated between the fins on your CPU heatsink.

Hi guys.

I have a problem that I only get playing the multiplayer portion of games. I get 2 minutes of lag free gaming, then almost on the dot I get exactly 5 seconds of lag. It's not an ISP problem, because I had one ISP, and it did it, then when I changed it the problem persisted. I'm running Windows Vista, and anything else you need to know to help me fix it, I can provide. Thanks.

BTW - a warm welcome to the forums.

How much RAM do you have installed? I doubt this is the cause of your problem, and you more than likely have plenty, but you should state how much you have so others can come and help

Hi

I have Media Player 10 and recently for no apparent reason every time I open a video file associated with Media Player, it asks me to Open With... and I've got to pick MP every time. Even checking "Always use selected program to open this kind of file" doesn't do anything.

Also it seems to have affected certain Media Player based videos on the net. It says "Ready" at the bottom, I click play and "Connecting" appears for a second, then it goes back to "Ready" having played nothing. This doesn't always happen though.

Tried reinstalling to no effect.

Can anyone help because this is unbelievably annoying?

Cheers

Sorry to interupt this thread but it seems the appropriate place for my query as well:

I'm running IE7 with all updates current on the latest version of Windows XP Home on a Dell Dim 520. I just recently re installed IE7 after i had similar problems when i originally purchased the PC and software. I use McAfee virus protection software.

The problem i'm having is this:

I use a news site or news sites, the main one being www.bloomberg.com, and once the site is loaded and it has time to run for a while, it will automatically update headlines etc. When it goes to update it will hang (i hover the cursor over the page and get the hour glass), and then when i try to close it i get the whole "this program is not responding" thing.

I don't see this problem with IE6, which i am using on my laptop at work.

It does the same thing with other news sites like Reuters and CNBC. Sometimes it will hang right from the start just after the page is loaded.

I have put the bloomberg website in as an accepted website in my security area in "internet options".

I really think this must be something simple that i'm missing somewhere.

I really appreciate any help on this.

Answer:Problem annoying

A couple of things for you to try.

1: Click start/run and type scf /scannow

Make sure you have your Windows cd handy as you might need it. This will scan your system for corrupt or missing OS files and replace as necessary.

2: If that doesn`t help. Try a Windows repair as per this thread HERE.

Now my younger brother can also see it on his PC, also a 1024 x 768 on IE7, BUT my desktop using the same resolution and screen size and in IE7 does NOT show it.Is this just a simple browser problem, or is it something in the coding? I've inherited this website and I'm totally php-ignorant, I'm using FP2003 to edit the page.

Answer:Annoying problem

You've got a table with a background image: <table align="left" background="index.php_files/nav_back.gif" border="0" height="594" width="58%">I think you'll find that that 'background' is not a valid attribute within 'table'. If you delete that, the line disappears. Some browsers are rendering and some aren't. I can't understand the reason why two IE browsers should be different though!

Hi

This is more annoying than a 'problem' , when I start the computor up it gets to the desktop as normal and then the 'program files' folder opens for no apparent reason.

It's been doing it for quite a while but I've just changed the hard drive and done a fresh install of xp and after updating and reinstalling some of the programs I use it's come back. It can be shut by just clicking the cross , just annoying as it does it everytime you startup.

I was keeping a watch for it , just in cass , while I installed the programs and thought I'd caught it but after uninstalling the program I thought it had started with i found it made no difference. Anyone got any ideas ?

Thanks , Adam

Answer:Annoying problem with xp

Is the programs folder in the startup folder?

Go to msconfig and check it out.

If it is, remove it and everything should be peachy.

Alright well I will try and explain myself and what I have done up to this point as well as humanly possible. This is a fairly urgent problem as this computer is used for business as well. I will continue to try and resolve the problem on my end and post any additional information that I come across to you guys. I appreciate your help! The computer with the issue is:Microsoft Windows Vista Home PremiumRunning on a COMPAQI recently installed a program onto the computer. As this issue resulted directly after the installation of the program (I.E.) a game I'm assuming the issue was caused by that installation. However, I can find nothing up tell this point to assume this is a Virus/Spyware. After the game was installed I began to have issues with my Network. Particularly our dial-up service would not connect. The error I was getting was as follows.Connection Status: unknownThe dependency service or group failed to startAs I dug around I got a number of other errors that had to do directly with the internet service. When I attempted to dial up to the network I getError 633: The modem (or other connecting device) is already in use or is not configured properly. If I attempt to create a new network connection the error I get is as followsComponent GUID: {7071ECA3-663B-4BC1-A1FA-b97f3b917C55}Component file: [C:\Windows\System32\connect.dll}Error: 0x800706BA < The error message could not be found>.Additional info:Failed to detect Internet connectivityIn addition... Answer:Very Odd and Annoying Problem

error 633 is usually modem driver related. Your modem is not the problem is it? try to reinstall your modem drivers. ================================================= Frustrated with Vista MS finally came out with a solution... follow this link:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940520It worked like a charm!!! I'm no longer getting the error (800706BA) ANDwas able to update my laptop.Good luck!

I keep getting an error message when I close IE that says "IE has encountered a problem and needs to close" It happens every time I close it. I've had this happen on my previous system too, so I'm guessing it has something to do with NetZero, but it still doesn't make much sense to me. I have firefox anyway, but sometimes I need IE to update windows or download Microsoft programs. NetZero automatically launches IE when I connect. Is there a way to set it to launch Firefox instead?

Answer:Annoying IE 6.0 problem

I used to run Netzero and it was the bigggest pile of tempremental crapI have ever used. Tech support was no help either. There is little flexibility in what you can do to resolve this. Your best bet is to install the IE Tab in Firefox and use that when you need to access websites using IE. You can find it here

Netzero was fine up until V7.0. After that it went downhill as they have you running all sorts of uneccessary stuff in the background now that you have no control over. Slows everything down a ton.

I am currently have two 8800 GTs in SLI and in every game that SLI is enabled for I get these very annoying flickering horizontal lines. These usually occur near sky textures. It is similar to what you would see when disabling vsynce only much more noticable and can occur when I am standing still.

I recently downloaded/installed the Forceware 175.19 driver with no success. This problem was also present on the 175.16 driver. I have a feeling it is driver related but none of the drivers I have tried have been successful. Does anyone have this problem or know what is causing it? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have been dealing with this issue for a couple of months.

Answer:Annoying Problem with SLI

Hello,

Let me guess you are using Vista? If so this is a known issue with SLi and Vista. The drivers are not right and SLi support is very bad for Vista. Just check the nVidia forums and you will see for yourself.

Hi guys this is my first ever post here. So i wonder if i can get some help regarding this thing that's going on.  My net connection keeps cutting out for a few seconds and then comes back on. I just don't understand what's causing it. I've tried running Malwarebytes and have MS Security Essentials and running scans shows no problems.  It really shows up when i'm watching YT videos. All of a sudden the screen go's black on the video and an error comes up saying "An error occurred"  then it gives an ID thingy and says find out more or something like that.   Anyway it's ruining my whole PC experience now as tonight it's happening on every video i watch.  Someone suggested making some changes to the Registry values so i tried that but it didn't help, the videos still keep cutting off.

Have you guys encountered this before?  This is a pretty old laptop. I've had it about 8 years. Someone also mentioned it could be a router problem but i haven't a clue really. It's like looking for a needle in a haystack unless you're an IT tech which i definitely am not.  I know enough to keep going but that's about it.

You don't mention which browswer you are using.  Perhaps you could try a different browswer to see if the problem continues?

Question: Annoying problem

I hope I am posting this in the right spot.

Recently we get a message saying adware is found on the computer in a normal message box. Clicking OK or the X in the corner then causes another message to come up saying the computer will restart in 1 min. Then it counts down and restarts. There's no way to stop it..at least not to my knowledge. The weird thing is usually in the past when there was a virus or spyware or whatever found, our virus protector would pop up and give us options, but this isn't..it's just a grey text box. I have ran a virus scan two days ago and it found 6 adware. I ran another yesterday and today because the problem has not been fixed, and it found nothing. So now I am asking here.

As I was typing this message, I actually just received a message from our virus protector saying that adware was found. More specifically it said adware.win32.Searchcolor. I quarantined and it said it was successful but I highly doubt my problem is fixed now.

the log thing is attatched.

Thanks!

Answer:Annoying problem

I would have edited this, but for some reason the edit button wasn't there...it was yesterday...but I'm sorry for bumping.

Since I posted this yesterday we have had no more of those gray text boxes pop up restarting the computer, but we now get our virus protector warning us of adware quite frequently. (Not just that searchColor but other file names too)

Just thought I would mention that..

I have some type of Spyware or Crapware that is driving me crazy. Every so often I get an "Information Pop Up" that states " Flash 6 not found ! Please install a paper or Flash SCR Master" if I close or cancel the pop up it starts up my browser and takes me to Intelore.com.

I have tried using Spyware Terminator to find the problem and also Panda Internet Suite 2010 but so far nothing has helped. I have also cleaned my registry and done searches but cannot find the problem. I even sent a email to Intelore asking them what the devil is going on but that was a waste of time, they never replied.

Can anyone please help me out of this quandry.

When gaming, not heavy by any means (Pet vet 2 for my daughter!) the mouse is sluggish and jumpy. I really don't know how she doesn't lose her temper with this thing! IT drives me nuts. Anyway, is there a known issue with some games? Is there a fix for mouse issues in vista?

System is:

Acer L100
250 g HHD
2 gig memory
500 g external HHD via USB 2.0
2 Acer Ferarri F-20 Monitors (one VGA and the other DVI per existing outputs running DisplyFusion)
HP 7550 printer with HP 5550 driver (Per HP and MS)
HP ScanJet 4370
Logitech 7.1 surround sound via existing audio
Logitech BT mouse and keyboard (Mx900/cordless elite)
Standard logitech optical whell mouse. (No model number on it)
Operating system is Vista Ultimate upgrade to Vista Home Premium. 32 bit version.

Answer:Yet Another Annoying Problem

I noticed issues with this at work one day (my wife's a vet) - but wasn't able to troubleshoot it.

I'd suggest keeping an eye on Task Manager...Processes tab for when it locks up. While in Task Manager, click on View, then on Select Columns. Select the item labelled IO Reads (to monitor your hard drive accesses) and click OK to exit the dialog. Then click on the column headers (CPU, Memory, and IO Reads) to see what's holding up the process.

Also, check in your Event Viewer under Windows Logs. Look at Application and System logs in particular. To get there, go to Start and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Let us know of any errors around or just before the time it starts to lock up.

Just a thought - but you mention 2 mouses (meeces?) - are both hooked up at the same time?

The day before yesterday I all of a sudden ran into a problem where I would try to open up my documents whether from My computer route or from the desktop and it will automatically close. I tried to do a system restore and all I get is it saying that it couldn't restore anything. I tried to restore it to the day before. If I can click on a folder before the my documents shuts down the that folder will stay open. The only folder that won't so far is My pictures and it does the same thing, completely closes down. I have run all the spyware and anti virus stuff and get nothing. What could be causing this. Thanks for the help

Hey there, this is my first post. and this forum looks like a god send...I have looked in so many places for a solution. I have tried so many different things to make this work but Vista just doesn't seem to be having it.I will try and state my problem as clearly as possible and add some images to help explain aswell. It may seem a little useless and undeeded, but i thought i would spice vista up abit but the problem has elevated into this hatred for not knowing why it will not work.Firstly, I have a pack Icons (.PNGS) that are 128x128, i know that before i can use them I must convert them to .ICO. So I do this, but when they are along side each other the .ICO is clearly alot smaller than the .PNG. I hover over each to check their dimensions, and they each have the same dimensions stated: 128x128 (funny thing is when i open the .ICO it opens at 128x128):- as illustrated in the print screen just here.SCREENSHOT DIAGRAM 1Anyway, i figure I would attempt at changing the icons on my desktop anyway to see if it would work. But no, when i change them, the icons are resized down to 72x72 or whatever size it is. Certainly not 128x128. Here is thee example on desktop:SCREENSHOT DIAGRAM 2I have even tried IconPackager, but the problem remains, it is definately something to do with Vista. I have tried changing Icon sizes using the CTRL+MOUSESCROLLING FUNCTION and all sorts. I have tried editing the .ICO and PNG's themselves. Nothing has worked. You see i want them to be the larger size ... Read more

Question: Annoying problem

Hi I'm new to the forum but I've been building PC's for around 15 years and have never had a problem like this before. I have 2 HDD's with a Windows 7 64bit on each drive, setup in dual boot with easy bcd.
When I boot into each drive after leaving my off over night I get a bsod (info below), but then once I reboot the problem is gone and will not occur again until the following morning. I can even turn the PC off in the daytime and it will not bsod again if I dont leave it switched off for hours. It's a really strange problem, being honest I have never needed to post on a forum in 15 years of PC building, I can normally fix problems on my own, but this time I need some help.

PC Specs:

Core i7 2600k
Msi P67A-C45 - Rev B
Corsair Vengance 1600mhz 18gb
2 x 2tb sata 6gb/s seagate drives.
XFX Radeon 5870 1gb

I Have attached both mididumps:

Bsod dump HDD 1:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/vqrtw1cje4m850m/Minidump HDD 1.rar

Bsod dump HDD 2:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/3ee498h2md5kmcs/Minidump HDD2.rar

I have completed a memory test and it came back fine.
Please can anyone shed some light on this?

Answer:Annoying problem

Ack! What an annoying problem. I dont have any dev tools on this machine so I cant read your minidump, but if it was my machine I'd start the troubleshooting by eliminating a hardware issue: run all the seagate diagnostics on the drives, especially the DOS ones where the OS cant hide so many of the drive's functions. http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools Boot straight into safe mode after it sits all night, see if it still blue screens. Put the hardware under a ton of pressure with something like intel burn test, ensure the hardware is stable. If you've already done these steps, test a known good hard drive with a clean OS install. I suspect a flaky hard drive, most likely the one running the boot loader. Good luck!

Answer:annoying little bho problem

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they... Read more

I've installed windows xp service pack 2 and since then I'm trying to solve the following problem with internet explorer.

I've a start page that points to a local file using [file:///C:/Inetpub/wwwroot] syntax in the default home page. This page has a dynamic menu with works with an embedded flash cab and that's the problem. No matter I change the security intranet configuration, even setting it to most low security level, the browser open the f* Information Bar always I point to the home page because the active content.

I looked for some help in the web but until now I didnt find any clue to how disable this annoying feature.

Has anyone experienced this kind of problem?

Answer:Annoying problem with xp sp2

No, I haven't experienced that problem ctsh, but if I had your issue, I'd do the following: click Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, scroll down to "Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) / Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)" and right-click it, choose properties, and change the drop-down menu for "Startup type:" to "disabled". Now that you are left without a firewall, immediately surf to www.download.com and download "ZoneAlarm 5.1.011". Next, install this powerful but simple firewall and start the program. As the program starts, it will explain its key elements and have you set up the program to fit your needs. Well there you have it... but keep in mind that, like I said, I never had the problem that you're trying to deal with, so this procedure is just an educated guess. Sorry it took me so long to explain everything... I'm not sure if you're new to XP or eXPerienced at using it. Oh... and an even better potential solution to your problem would be to download Opera from download.com. Opera is, in my personal opinion, the BEST INTERNET BROWSER IN EXISTENCE, and blows IE out of the freakin' water!

Question: Annoying Problem

I was downloading stuff from the net happily this afternoon, and a 'low disk space' prompt appeared (This happened on my C drive.). Heeding the advice, i proceeded to cut and paste my junk files to my external usb hard disk. Now when i returned to verify the final available disk space, it only showed 400 mb free. And I'm very positive that i've cut & pasted at least 4GB of junk files to other places.I immediately went for the disk cleanup option, but to no avail. Deleting the .tmp files were redundant. (My search function reveals none at all in the first place.  :-/) I sat like an idiot in front of the screen for 10 mins, at a loss of what to do. That's not all. My 400 mb free space decreased by 30 mb every 8 mins, even though i'm only downloading a document @ 0.5kb/s. To summarize my problem...1: Whats wrong with my screwed C drive? I seemed to be missing a few GB of precious free space. 2: My free space decreases at an alarming rate, even though when I'm downloading at a slow speed. *censored*?  I would appreciate if any kind soul could stand out to help me.  :-/

Answer:Annoying Problem

While you were "happily downloading off the net" you probably got a trojan/spyware thing for free and it is what is consuming your hard drive space. Do you use any sort of protection to prevent this?

Ok, well, hi! New person here.  Anyway, I have Windows ME and WMP 9. I recently bought the new P!nk CD called "I'm Not Dead". Unfortunately, there were two bonus tracks only available in Europe.I downloaded them off LimeWire and added them to  I'm Not Dead under Pink under My Music under My documents.Sorry for all the details. So, I went to "add file" in WMP. It added the two extra songs but in a different album all by themselves. I need to know if it's possible to have the original and downloaded songs together on the same album when listening to them on WMP.It put the original ones under "I'm Not Dead (Pink)" and the downloaded ones under "I'm Not Dead".  If it helps, the original songs are .WMA files while the downloaded ones are .MP3 files. They also have different bit rates.Help!!! :-? :-? :-?If one of you computer wizards could help me I would greatly appreciate it!

Answer:Really annoying problem with WMP

You could open all the files and save them as a playlist. Just highlight them both and open them, then reorganize them as you see fit, then click File > Save Now playing list As... and make a new playlist. All files should be there. File format should not matter as I commonly mix WAVs with MP3s and such.

Answer:HELP!! annoying problem

With some motherboards, if shut down incorrectly require pressing F1 to continue, to protect the cpu, by reducing its speed. Also by adding another boot device such as an external hard drive or memory stick. This can also be caused by the cmos battery being run down or faulty.

I just built a new computer and I set up my microphone today. When I am listening to music, using ventrilo, or any other audio software everything is fine. However, when I start counter-strike source up my Headphones emit some weird buzzing noise and my microphone has the same sound when I test it and when others hear it. Its a noise that starts as soon as I start the game.

Things that can be ruled out:

- headphones ( I tried two kinds )
- Hardware (It only does it in CS:S right?)
- Ventrilo ( I closed it and it still does it)
- Microphone ( It makes sound with or without it)

Thanks for everything in advance. I have googled/researched it alot and you guys are my last hope.

Answer:Help Please Very Annoying problem

Have you tried going to the manufacturer's website (of the audio card) to see if there are newer drivers for it ? That would be a good place to start.

I guess before you look for drivers, you could open Device Manager and see if there is any problem with the card that is detected by Windows (in the DM). You can see if the device is working properly according to the dialog box. You know it isn't working right, but does Windows? You could check there. Also you can click the Troubleshooting button to see what comes up for details.

Question: Annoying problem

I have a problem with a PC (circa 2002) that belongs to my Father-in-Law.

I recently added a 2nd HD and installed XP to SP2. I soak tested it and it appeared to operate fine (once I had cleared up the hudreds of reported viruses).

I returned it to my Father-in-Law and after a couple of weeks it stopped booting. It gets as far as a screen with the old style bar filling from the left (didn't think XP had this?). The bar fills in approx 1/3 and then freezes.

He says he hasn't installed any software and has had no further reports of viruses (using Security Centre and Norton Anti-Virus).

The freeze happens at exactly the same point.

I have tried booting into Safe mode, entering the BIOS, booting from CD but it also appears that the keyboard doesn't work. I have used this keyboard before so there shouldn't be any issues.

Any ideas anyone?

Answer:Annoying problem

Sounds like some driver conflict or application load that is stopping the Boot.
It is not clear but it sounds like you can boot to Safe mode.
If so you can try a boot log to track the problem .or shutdown all programs ,turning them on one at a time ( this can be done with msconfig)

Running Windows XP Home Edition with SP3.

I have been trying to deal with this annoying problem for a while now, but to no avail. I have some programs stuck in my add/remove programs list that do not have the change/remove button. I uninstalled them through add/remove programs but they still show up in the list. I deleted the data folders in c:\program files\. I fished through the registry and deleted all (or so I thought) entries that appeared to be related to the programs. I even went through the Local_machine\software\microsoft\currentversion\uninstall key as well and they DO NOT show up in there...at least from what I can tell. I ran jv power tools and deleted some file extensions and installation data from the programs but that didn't work either. TweakUI didn't help either. I really don't want to reinstall my OS so if anyone has any idea at all what could be the problem, or how to fix it, please, by all means speak up. If you need more information let me know and I'll post it.

it may be worth your while to have a look here, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301,
and try the "Windows Installer CleanUp Utility", it's worked for me in similar situations.

Good morning all,Now, I have an annoying problem with windows xp pro...I have my pictures my music and various other foldersin my doc's folder that i don't use ! I use my D: drivefor saving files and backing up as you would understandit's alot safe in case of windows crashing ext ext ...Anyway, When i delete the pic's, music, and other folders in my doc's folder they always return eitherafter a reboot or after several reboots ?It's not taking up much space i know this but it'sreally annoying cos i have to delete them all the time ...Does anyone know of a way of making them stay Deleted ?!?

Answer:Annoying Problem ?!?

normally as far as i know you cannot delete the "my documents folders as they are protected by the system and will be restored upon restart as you have found.you may want to try(at your own risk)"Click Start, then Run and type: regsvr32 /u mydocs.dll You can then delete the MyDocuments folder/sub-folders like EBooks" taken from click hereor you could move it to another location maybe click herei have not tried either so cannot comment as to if this does or does not work or cause problems.i would just leave it and right click the taskbar/properties/start menu/customize/advanced and tick "dont display this item" for the folders in question maybe.

Question: Annoying Problem

Okay, on my desktop we have AOL because my mom likes it. We have broadband through Comcast, My problem that I am having is that I can only use AOL for internet because when I open Firefox or IE it says it can't get s connection. Comcast says the connection is good and works so there is nothing they can do. I am wondering what could be causing this because I cannot download a lot of things because AOL doesn't allow it (i.e. torrents). I thought maybe it is being blocked somewhere but I don't know. It still does this when I turn Windows Firewall off. You all are my last hope. and I would greatly appreciate any help I can get.

P.S. I have a wireless Linksys router through the same internet and my laptop works fine with it. Didn't know if that would help lol.

Answer:Annoying Problem

What do you have for security software on the desktop computer? Sounds as if IE and Firefox are being blocked buy software on that PC, likely AOL itself is doing it. Boot into SafeMode with Networking and see if you can connect to the internet with the browsers.

And seriously drop AOL there is nothing on AOL that you can't get free on the real internet. I've seen the AOL software cause nothing but issues with alot of PCs since it trys to take over the PC.

Networking isn't my strong point. I'm above average I suppose, but if something breaks I basically don't know what to do to fix it.

I'm on Comcast cable, Motorola modem going into a D-Link DIR-655 router, then directly to 3 PCs. No switches or extra hubs or anything. About two weeks ago, I started having issues. It basically seems like the computers have forgotten how to get to the internet search pages... like, you put an address in the address bar and it just completely ignores you and says "page cannot be displayed". Click the address bar and push enter (and repeat, usually 3-7 times) enough times and it will go through. Sometimes it will then work for 4-5 page lookups or link clicks, but it always stops working and I have to re-mash the links or address bar. Getting email in Outlook is nearly impossible. Things like WoW work just fine. It takes a lot longer to connect than usual, but once connected it works just like always. The speed is there, the ability to transfer data is there, its just whatever makes the connection between the computer and what needs to be downloaded is no longer there.

I have tried:
a different NIC in my computer
different browsers, Firefox and IE7
rebooting modem, a lot
rebooting router, a lot
flashing router to newest firmware, which also reset to factory defaults and set it all up again manually, without using a saved config file
cleared all browser cookies
went entirely DHCP instead of the... Read more

I bought an asus g72gx from best buy a few months ago, and I have had virtually no problems with it until just recently. For whatever reason when I shut the laptop instead of going into sleep mode it just seemed to stay on, the little blue light on the case instead of pulsing just stayed on. The problem occurred when I reopened it, the screen was gray and the computer was completely locked up, absolutely nothing. So I just did a hard restart but when I rebooted it got to the windows 7 loading screen and then just crashed and then after it crashed the screen went to the same gray where only the backlight was on. I tried again rebooting and this time the screen came on for the asus startup screen then it just went gray. I attempted to reboot again and the screen just stayed gray only the backlight coming on. I connected it to an external monitor and did a system restore which fixed whatever caused the crash and everything now works fine, only problem is that my lcd screen doesn't work all I have is a backlight. I turn it on and I hear the little explosion thing but gray screen and then I switch to my external. I disassembled this thing and checked every single connection to the screen, the graphics card, the lcd inverter and all that stuff, but for some reason only the backlight will come on. Can anybody give me any ideas to get this thing to work?

Ok, yea I'm new to the forums, but certainly not new to problems. Here is the score.... My mic works, I hear it coming out of my speakers when I unmute it. I have it seleceted in recording preferences for sndvol32, but no sound is ever recorded in various utilities. There is however a strange reading on any thing that monitors the mic channel, it is extreamly high pithed and is reading at full volume....

Almost sounds like hardware issues? I have Realtek AC97 and changed the mic input on all 3 UAJ's and I get the same reults..

Another possiblity is that it is a codec issue... And I'm hoping it is, however, I can find no help on setting, or finding any default sound recording codec, as I fear I removed a lot of them months ago when solving another issue.

Any help is greatly appreciated, and I will submit any information that may be required.

I have a little annoying problem with Win XP Home. A few days ago I noticed when I open "My Computer", all of my drives, document folders, and scanner aren't divided into their respective groups. If I can remember right, I think it had "Shared Documents" and another folder at the top, then it listed all of my hard drives and CD drives in the middle, then my network drives, and then my scanner and digital camera at the bottom. Right now they are all listed in alphabetical order. It isn't hurting anything being this way, but I was wondering why it would do this all of a sudden. There has to be an easy solution to this. Thank you for any response I get. This forum is the best.

I have 2 totally seperate networks running. Both have Full Windows 2000 Server DNS, DHCP etc.

They run through 1 central router for connection to the internet.

Now the problem is that they can both see each other and complain about the other DHCP server.

Due to the IP range of the router they both need to be in the 192.168.254.0 range.

Is there anything I can do?

Answer:Annoying problem... need a bit of help.

Change the subnet.

EDIT: Fuck that aint gonna work.
