Preferred Solution: Building a new PC, Opinions?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Building a new PC, Opinions?

Honestly, you don't need an 8 core cpu or 16 gigs of RAM unless you are doing video rendering or intense graphical applications. A 4 core cpu and 8 gigs are more than enough for what you need.

When it comes to gaming the main thing you want to keep in mind is that they are GPU intensive. Find out what the recommended hardware is for each game and decide if your video card will do what you need; I have a feeling it will.

In addition, what is the make and model of the 600W power supply?

Hey guys, ive decided to try and build a new pc for the summer time. I mainly play games like Doom 3 and Half Life 2, but I'll be getting Halo 2 for sure and other high end games like that. I don't want to make this into another Intel vs. AMD debate, but I'd like some opinions on what kind of processor to get, what brand of mobo, etc. I would like to build the fastest of the fastest that I possibly can. I need opinions on graphics too, but again, not starting an ATI vs. NVidia debate (lol). I really need something that will give me a high frame rate, will keep my graphics looking sharp on high res and will still keep that great game effect! Thanx guys

Hey guys, been awhile since I have been on the boards. Nice to see everyone is still as helpfull as always.

I am building my first machine from scratch. The machine will be used for some gamming (which will be new to me, as I haven't really got into computer gaming until now), video editing, picture editing, and other normal stuff.

Here is my list of componets. Let me know what you think!

Western Digital / Caviar SE16 / 500GB / 7200 / 16MB / SATA-300 / OEM / Hard Drive

Asus A8N 32-SLI-Deluxe NVIDIA Socket 939 ATX Motherboard

AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 2.60GHz OEM Processor (Dual core)

Ultra PC3200 DDR 400MHz Memory (2 gigs worth)

Ultra X-2 Connect 550-Watt ATX 120mm Fan Modular Power Supply

Ultra eTorque Black Mid-Tower ATX Case with Front USB, FireWire and Clear Side

P450-7920 :: XFX GeForce 7900 GT / 256MB GDDR3 / SLI / PCI Express / Dual DVI / HDTV / Video Card (1.55 lbs)
The only thing that I have done research on and worries me a little, is the MOB. I have read good reviews and i have read some HORRIBLE ones. What is all of your experiances with this board? Is there another board I sould consider that may be a better choice?

Here is a link to the "barebone" package that includes the board: Read more

So, once I get my school monies I'm upgrading. However, I can't really decide on what to get because pci-e is replacing agp and I JUST got my 9800 pro agp not 6 months ago.

So, all I'm replacing for now is the mobo, memory, and processor. I may also do the graphics card. Not sure yet, that depends on the mobo.

I own an A7N8X Deluxe. Great board. Great gaming computer for what I had to spend. ASUS is great but they only have 2 choices for a 939 AMD chip. I have an Nforce 2 chipset, which has been good to me. So,

Nforce 4 SLi any good?

What about Nforce 4 Ultra?

What about the KT800 chipset from via?

If I got ASUS i have to buy the SLi for the nforce4 chipset. Anyone with expierence with these boards let me know. I'm looking for reviews on 939 boards only, since one board a manufactuer may be great while their next product may suck.

DFI Lanparty boards? If you have one let me know.

MSI looks scarey... but if you want to vouche for them let me know.

Any other board anyone wants to mention for 939 AMD's go right ahead.

MEMORY- 3200 Dual Channel

I own Samsung, which has served me well. I'm looking for a two pack to equal 1GB. I have to have at least that since games are taking at least 256MB.

Ok that's my ideal computer. I'm looking to game a bit & mess with photo editing. I doubt I'm going to overclock. All that with WinXP Home cost around $1060 which isn't too bad. I'm willing to spend a little bit more as long as I'll notice the difference, but this should be good enough. I would like some opinions on what you'll think. Thanks.

Answer:building a computer, need help & opinions

try I am not too familiar with that motherboard, but i have ASUS A8V-E deluxe, and it works very well for me. I dunno how people are going to react to this, but I wouldnt get an os on it...just because its like 100 dollars cheaper to just install it yourself--borrow it from a friend. but then again, if your all into that legal mumbo jumbo, then go right ahead. Nice choice of processor, dvd and hd drives. However, i will warn you about that 6600...its basically the same thing as an x600 xt, and if your into gaming, ...not for you. I got the x600 xt thinking it was good...well, im going to be getting an x800 xl soon (compared to 6800), just because the 6600/x600 does not run games very well. It also depends on what games you want to run--I like playing Half life 2, warcraft 3, facry and the like...they require mucho graphics power. I just thought id suggest a better video card.

After hours of hard researching, I finally came up with this uber-list for a sub-$1k system.

Athlon XP 1600+ - $54
CoolerMaster DP5-6L11A HSF - $6
ASUS A7V8x - $126
ATI Radeon 7500 64MB DDR - $62
256MB Kingmax DDR400 - $69
80GB 7200RPM Seagate Barracuda IV - $110
120GB 7200RPM Western Digital SE - $162
Sound Blaster Live! Audigy Gamer - $84
Lite-On 40x/12x/48x CD-RW - $57
Antec SX630II Mini-Tower Case - $75
Creative Modem Blaster V.92 56k PCI Modem - $19

Total: $662, $714 w/ bigger HDD

This price doesn't include Windows XP, MS Office, or a mouse and keyboard. I have an old mouse/keyboard, but I dunno if I want to use it...

What are you goign to be doing with it? You don't have broadband correct? Then I think if you are looking at saving money then you should stick with the 80 gig.

Hi guys,

I've searched all across the internet (for what I can tell, anyway) to see if there are any incompatibilities/power issues/etc. for the prospective PC I would like to build, and so far have come across none. I'm still yet to fully understand the differences in PSU, but I don't think I'm too far off. Could you guys give me an opinion of my future (2/3 weeks before I build) set up and tell me if I'm going wrong anywhere? Or if I need any further cooling?

Case : Thermaltake Level 10 GT / Corsair 600T White
Processor : AMD FX Bulldozer 8-Core 3.3GhZ (when available) OR AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition 3.7GhZ
Motherboard : Asus Crosshair V Formula
Graphics Card : 2 x 2048MB Sapphire ATI Radeon HD6950 set up in Crossfire OR 2 x 1024MB Sapphire ATI Radeon HD6870 (also set up in Crossfire)

HDD : Seagate Momentus XT 500GB SATA Hybrid
RAM : Corsair Vengeance 16GB (4x4GB 1333MhZ)
CD/DVD : LiteOn BR Re-writer

I'm also aware that this is my first thread/post/involvement on this board, at which point I would like to introduce myself and say hello to everyone.

Thank you.

looks pretty sweet 8-). only thing is, you cannot have a RAID connection with just one SATA drive. it requires two. also, you might want to consider getting a larger harddrive. id suggest a minimum of 120gb.

Im not buying the pieces now. imma wait about 2 months. Do you think in june the prices are gonna drop or new and better parts are gonna appear on the market ? Finally, is this pc gonna be fullproof for the next 2 years? meaning 2015-2017 ?

Thanks ^^

Yes the more memory you have the better. But you only need to make sure you have enough to cover your needs. Anything more would be over-kill. I currently have 8GB and it seems to be plenty for my needs.

Not really fullproof as computers are still on a fast outdated cycle. However the machine will serve you well enough for two plus years.

Hello All -

I'm building myself a new computer, something that is going to last me until I complete college (about 3 years). Below is a list of parts that I'm going with. What does everybody think?

Motherboard: Asus P5P800
CPU: Intel LGA775
Spec: 90 nm, 1 MB L2, FSB 800 MHz, around 3.4 GHz
Video Card: GeForce FX 5900XT
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda ST3200822AS
Memory: Corsair Twinx1024-3200PRO
Optical Drive: Sony DWU18ABK (I think?)
Case: Antec PlusView1000AMG (I think?)
Power Supply: Antec TrueBlue 480
Cooling System: Cooler Master Cool Drive 6
Monitor: Samsung 997DF-T/T
OS: Windows XP Pro

I know I don't have a sound card on the list. I'm going to use the onboard sound for right now.

Thanks for all the help!

Hmm...I guess you are going to be using this PC for gaming? I would hightly recommend staying away from the GeForce FX series. I can't stress to you how bad the GeForce FX cards are. Get the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro.

Hi all!
As explained by the thread title, I'm currently in the midst of building a PC and would love to have some advice.

Currently, here are my targets/uses and what I've had in mind:

Budget: $1500 USD or $2000 SGD (hopefully I can spend less )

Location: Singapore

Aim: Gaming (I play CS:GO competitively at 1024x768), possibly streaming. As silent a PC as possible.

Monitors: 2 monitors, 1x BenQ XL2420T running at 1920x1080, 1x Dell Ultrasharp 24" running at 1920x1200

Alright so here's what I've had in mind:

Case: Fractal Design R5 - I've been shopping around for silent cases and comparing the NZXT and FD, the FD wins me over in price and because I've an optical drive to transfer over

SSD/HDD: Don't need any, transferring my current ones over. I currently have 2x WD Black 1TB HDD and 1x Crucial M500 240GB SSD. I am wondering though if PCI-E SSDs are worth it?

Optical Drive: Don't need any, transferring a 1x ASUS DVD+/- RW

CPU: Now here's the BIG question mark I have for myself, what kind of CPU is good? I'm looking for the PC to be able to handle coding such as C++, Python, Ruby, MATLAB etc. I'd also like to be able to have streams on my Dell monitor while I'm playing games. Currently, I have to shrink the size of the stream to reduce the amount of load my CPU handles. I'm also a tab monster sometimes so I'd have browsers in the background while I'm streaming. Answer:Building new PC (would love opinions and help)

If its was just for gaming I would have said an Intel i5 as it is considered the sweet spot for gaming but since you are coding I believe you will be better off with an i7.

As for your RAM make sure your motherboard does not require you to OC in order to get the 2400 speed.

Notice: I looked around and can't find anywhere to put something like this. I don't know if anyone here likes looking over these and discussing them, but it looks like the type of place that would know quite a bit about it. Please move it to the correct section if I'm in the wrong place, and if I'm breaking rules or something, don't get too mad at me? :p
This is what I've got so far:

Case: Antec Black Thing

CPU: Intel Core i-5 2.66 GHz Quad Core

RAM: G.Skill 4GB

Video Card: EVGA 9800 GT 1GB

Hard Drive: Western Digital 1TB

Power Supply:

Total cost: Somewhere around $740 with the combo deals I believe.

Need to get a monitor, a disc drive, OS (win7), and a keyboard

Total Budget: Around $1000

I don't know much about building a computer as this is my first time, and had someone else almost entirely pick these parts out. What do you guys think about it?

Thanks for any and all help

I'm going to get back into WoW multiboxing and figured why not give hardware boxing a try. So, I'm building four cheap $500 computers for my alts and use my beast pc for my main. I'll have two 22" for the main pc and 1 19" for each of the alts. My question though is does Keyclone work for multiple computers to pass the keystrokes or no? If it doesn't, what could I use to control all my accounts like I would with Keyclone on one PC. I know about synergy, which I'll have that to use one keyboard/mouse for the computers, but does that work inside of WoW to?

Here's the build list for the 4 PCs that will run my alts. Anyone know of parts I could substitute to bring the price down?

This computer is going to be built using as many parts as I can from my Dell that I have failed to fix (from this thread). I just wanted to see what every one thinks of it before I go out and buy the parts. Thanks.

I've got my heart set on the DFI Infinity P965-S. I have an older DFI board and I'm very pleased with it.

I'm going to be using the 3.0GHz P4 w/ HT from the Dell. I'll eventually want to upgrade to a dual core processor, which is the great thing about the board I'm using.

CPU heatsink and fan assembly:
This one I'm having trouble with. Since I'm initially using the CPU from my Dell, I can't use the Dell HSF assembly. Anyway, every time I pick one out that I like, I read reviews on it. Every single one has some good reviews and bad reviews, and by bad I mean horrible. I'm not looking to overclock or nothing so I don't need a "bad ***" cooling system, I'm just looking for something that will work good and not die. Can any one suggest one to me?

I picked out this Cooler Master and I love it. I was looking for something a little more traditional, not one of those cases that looks like a DJ light show. This has all the cooling options I was looking for, easy access front USB, audio, and firewire, pretty sharp looking, and a great price.

I don't have one picked out. I'm just going to get one that has the necessary power requirements, 400-500W range, $50-100 range,... Read more

Answer:Building new computer, opinions & suggestions

I see one thing right off; you need to buy a retail or oem version of xp. You cannot move the os that came pre-installed on a dell to another system.
This is for two reasons;

1 It is not legal. The eula states that the oem os is part of the original hardware. It basically lives and dies with the motherboard.

2 Unless you follow a procedure for moving the os, it most likely will not boot anyway. This is because proprietary chipset drivers were installed. If you are going from an intel 965 chipset to an intel 975, it might work. If you are going from a sis to intel, it will not.

As far as the hsf, I really like ones that use a real mounting plate that goes behind the board. IMO much better than the push pins that intel uses. I use an asus VR hsf and it works very well; keeps a Pentium D 940 running at 32-40C.

I had originally thought about an x700 Pro for my video card, but looking at a lot of reviews the 6600gt beats out the x700 in almost every category. That CPU i've read a lot of topics on it, about people OC'ing it to 2600mhz on stock cooling and minimal voltage increases. I won't be taking it that high, but OC'ing is an issue. Does Gigabyte make a good 6600gt in your opinion? Will that motherboard be efficient? I don't need many bells and whistles. And I only thought about getting 1 stick of 512 DDR 3200 right now, and buying another stick after taxes to take advantage of dual-channel.

Well , hello there. My names Ryan. As some of you lurkers may know , i've posted multiple times in this forum asking about a setup I found on a certain website. Scrap that , i've read into the website and it has had a ton of bad reveiws , hence , I am building one myself.

Before we begin , I am not a hardware techie , but I do know a thing or two . So do tone down your lingo , but not the the extent where a canine could understand.

Anyway , this is my first ever computer build. I've never built a computer before so be gentle , there will probably be a few compatibility issues with my first component choices and / or I will miss a specific component out - but thats what your here for .

I am simply building the tower and components inside , all peripherals , including monitor have already been purchased . And I love my monitor 22" pebble , with 2ms response time and HD ready *shuts up*

Onto the juicy stuff.

I am making this computer as primarily a gaming rig , and something for me to do college work on / web design work and general surfing.

Below are the components I have chosen at current;

Answer:Building a computer - need opinions on the hardware im choosing.

I would find a p35 chipset board for that processor that uses ddr2 or a good 965 chipset board. I use the gigabyte 965 ds3 board (rev 1.3 or 3.3) with my quad and couldn't be happier. The only other thing I see is the power supply may not have enough juice to push the video (couldn't find specs for it) but that is a good card for gaming to be sure

As the title states I am building a new computer for a friend who demanded high specification on a very flexible budget. I am currently in the USA and will be buying all parts from Newegg for an American friend. However, I wanted the opinion of this educated forum. Here are the items under consideration:AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego click here.Asus ASUS A8N-SLI Premium click here.Corsair XMS 2Gb (2x1Gb) TwinX 2048-3200 C2PT click here.XFX 7800GTX click here.2x WD Cavier SE WD800JD 80Gb 8Mb Cache click here.2x Pioneer DVR 109 click here.Sony Black 1.44 Floppy click here.ePower TAGAN TG 480-U22 ATX 480W click here.Antec Solution SLK3000 ATX Mid Tower click here.Windows XP Home click here. All of this will cost roughly $1770 including shipping (about £1000). I was curious as to the compatibility of this system? I opted for one 7800GTX at the moment with the option to go SLI with two of these in the future over 2 6600GT's or similar. Disregarding SLI future option I could go for the Asus A8N E board.Any feedback is greatly appreciated.(I am not interested in switching to Intel).

Answer:Building A New High Spec Computer - Opinions Pls

If the budget is flexible, you/he may prefer one of the dual-core amd x2 cpus, although he could upgrade to this later as the mobo will support these chips, these allow the user to say, play a game while at the same time ripping a cd.Unless he is pretty sure about using the sli option later this is a waste and the money saved could be spent elsewhere. While the psu (480W) is a very good choice, is it enough for the graphics card, esp if he does decide to use 2 later on. I'm not sure about the power requirements for the 7800s, but may be worth checking.Don't take these as a critism, just ideas off top of my head:-0

I am looking for advice, opinions, and impressions about this building's wiring. I don't have any or very much experience in cabling, only that for the short time I had been in a Network Cabling course at a local community college what I learned was when crimping and terminating CAT Ethernet that bare wiring = VERY BAD and must expose least amount possible to avoid EMI and degradation of line quality.

I want to know what you think of this wiring, what your impression is, what is wrong with this picture, if you have any advice or opinions or thoughts, etcetera.

From my point of view: makes sense phone is not affected because it is analogue and analogue transmissions tend to be more tolerant/don't care about things like this, but is important for digital transmissions because computers are computers and data integrity is a very important thing for everything to work well. To me, this cabling doesn't sit well with my stomach.

Answer:Expert advice/opinions/impressions on this building's phone & data wiring?

First thought: burn it with fire!
What they did was a shortcut. Instead of running individual 4 pair cables from the patch panel to each workstation, they ran 25 pair Cat 5e from the patch panel to the 110 block you said was mounted in a ceiling. From there, home runs go to each workstation.

Let me start off by saying I have a few HDDs, two external HDDs, Monitor, DVD+/-R RW DL drive, keyboard, mouse, and speakers already... so I think all I need to actually buy hardware-wise is below. If you think I need to buy more fans or anything "extra" like that then let me know. All help/advice/opinions are appreciated.

The prices I list are in the range I want to spend... I REALLY don't want to (and can't) go all out on this build, but I do want to be able to sit on it for a few years... if you know what I mean.

If you see something that needs upgrading or is just plain wrong let me know.

The PSU should be mounted fan down as there seems to be a vent down there in the case. I have my PSU mounted that way and there's not much heat that goes into the case as it pulls in outside air with that fan and blows it out the back, it's basically just lukewarm to the touch.

RAM: You say 4GB for now, I assume you're getting W7 X64 then?

Video Card: I'd say the 480 is overpriced, get a 470 if you want to stick to nVidia. Do check out the ATI offerings as they are cheaper for the same performance. As to the size, the 480 will fit but probably won't be able to put any drives in that area.

What if I told you that you can get an i7 920 for $200 @ Microcenter(you have to pick it up)? The only problem there with Intel is that you can't upgrade much. Whereas the AM3 board should eventually be upgradeable to an X8 with a BIOS flash.

Keep the option open for eventual SLI/Crossfire as you mentioned you want this future proofed. The specs for games will always increase. Actually, that's the highest recommended spec that I've seen for a game yet!

So the president of our company just bought some new offices next to some other properties we own, we're going to be installing about 16 surveillance cameras that will require around 30mb/sec + network access so we can provide internet to the new building, heres a map from google earth

and the original

you will see that we own all the land in the green, and that is where we need to connect to, we also own the small property in yellow and there is a tiny little bridge which is owned by the city that goes over a drainage ditch between the yellow property and the one in blue which we need to connect to our network.....

does anyone know any companies that could do this sort of work for us? i would love to run dedicated fiber without paying time warner another service fee per month, oddly enough we have time warner in the green but just across the street in the blue is AT&T territory so thats a big hassle there, wifi might be an option if it can be dependable and fast, there are a few large oak trees in the way though , we cant just run wire across the city land either and im not even sure where to begin to get estimates and need some tips who to speak with, fyi this is in simi valley, california

Best route is to have someone lay a conduit between the two buildings, however depending on lenght and bends, that can be a royal pain to pull wire through.

I am the Pastor of a small church in Texas. I recently purchased a laptop to replace my desktop and plan on passing down my desktop to our treasurer. I just purchased a D-Link Extreme N Gigabit router and have networked the 2 computers to the DSL.

We recently purchased an all in one print/copy unit that has wireless capabilities that I would also like to incorprate into the network with the DSL and Other Computer.

We have our main Church building where my office is located, however; the copier and treasurers office are in our youth building behind the church. When I'm sitting at my desk I can sometimes get a low signal strength connection with the printer on the printers "network" in the other building.

With my Laptop I get great signal strength from the "DSL Network" just outside the building. The meter is around 4 bars and stays 48-54mbps. As soon as I step in the door, the signal is lost(it's a metal building).

The copier room is the first room inside the door and the next room is the Treasurers office. The room right above both is my Teen Classroom for Wednesday Night bible studies. These three rooms are really the only place in the building i'm needing to reach signal.

Currently in both machines I have one Intel A/B/G card and the other just is labled USB B/G Card. Would changing these cards to N enable me to pick up the signal inside the building? Is there a cheap meathod of bridging from building to building? This is all comin... Read more

Hello, I'm sorry if this comes out spoonfeedish, but I have been out of the tech advances for the last 5 years and I'm turning back into a noob.

Here's the thing, my wife's father has two apartment buildings in the same street and are within direct line of sight with no obstacles in between, the distance is between 100 and 120ft. This apartments are changing tenants constantly because it's close to a business district and most people only stay for a couple of months.

So onto my question, the plan is to have fiber to building A and share it to building B with an antenna and in each building there will be a cable running to each apartment from a main switch/router which will have it's max speed capped so every apartment has it's own WiFi. I need a lot of help here because I need to know what to buy, I can research how to configure each thing but the amount of products and selection that is available nowadays is overwhelming.

Short version.

-Building A and Building B are apartment buildings.
-Building A has fiber internet
-Need to connect Building A to Building B with an antenna.
-Each apartment in both buildings has to have it's own speed capped ethernet connection

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I just noticed this recently, after I had to reinstall Windows xp home. When I start a game everything runs fine until I load a map, then the performance slowly gets worse and worse. My cpu is dedicating all the cycles to swapping stuff to the page file I suppose. I monitored task manager while the game was running in the background, and the page file just gets bigger and bigger until the game crashes. The game ran quite nicely, until I recently when I reinstalled Windows. Windows is up to date, with SP3 and everything.

I took a few screenshots, the first one is while the game is still going, and I think it just crashed. The second being after the game closed and the page file returns to normal. You can see the definite decline on the page file history.

First off I will tell you what my goal is and then what I have tried and any comments or ideas are greatly appreciated.

At our church we recently got dsl, since I am the tech guy, I got asked to tackle the challenge. We are trying to get dsl at our parsonage as well, which is aprox 50 yds away.

This is what I have done. From our dsl modem I have hooked up a router for the normal operations in the church. Also from this router I have ran cat V to a wireless router next to an exterior wall. The wireless N router has a detatchable antenna, so I got an ext. cable and placed the omni antenna on the ext. of the building. That antenna didnt seem to have much range so I bought a high gain yagi antenna. Now the range is good, but the parsonage next door is brick. The signal seems to register on the computer but no internet access. The internet works fine on the outside, I guess brick and wifi dont mix.

My question is what would you suggest, get a second yagi and go into and access point? They want wireless in the house. Also since it is a different building , but has the same phone number would it be possible to have two seperate dsl modems?

Any help is appreciated, Im ok with direct wireless, but wireless to wireless and access points, I dont have a clue.

Thanks, Shane

Answer:Networking from building to building

good work (so far).

recommend you use a LAPTOP to verify the remote connectivity.

First, config the laptop so as to connect to your secondary router (ie: wireless router next to an exterior wall).
To avoid routing complexity; wire your connections like this

notice that the secondary.router connects to the primary using a LAN slot, not the typical WAN connection.
This will allow all systems on your lan (regardless of wired/wifi, or which router they connect to) to use the same ip subnet
(ie all devices will have the first three values of the ip address identical; 192.168.1.x)

To do this, connect a system to the secondary.router (and nothing else connected to it),
access the internal config of the router and disable the DHCP service.
The primary router will then control all IP addresses for the devices.

[a]Either or both routers may use wifi too
TRICK: use different channels, same WPA phrase, and make both SSIDs similar, but unique (ie: parishA vs parishB)

Now reconnect the routers and verify the laptop can connect to the secondary.router when it is in the same room. Now step across the yard (but still outside) and verify you're still connected.
Walk inside and try to get connected again.

They want wireless in the house. Also since it is a different building , but has the same phone number would it be possible to have two seperate dsl modems?Click to expand.... Read more

New to forums, great resource, anyway will get to the point. Setting up a wireless networking solution at work to connect two manufacturing facilities (.75km apart at most) together so they can use the same distributed network program (Epicor's Vista if anyone cares). Both sites are a coimbination of wired and wireless, with a a router at each site, and many switches + hubs littered throughout the buildings. My thoughts were two higher end AP's (maybe cisco Aironet) running in bridge mode along with Hyperlink technologies antennas to boost signal ( Any suggestions? Also, can each building still use their own dedicated DSL line to access the internet?

I had another thread about Cat6 and my T1 setup and it was suggested I run fiber from my office building to my house building.

I obviously only want to run fiber between the two switches, and then from the switches I will run Cat6.

I have no idea what fiber I need, or what are quality switches that won't break the bank.

I believe I need:

50/125 OM3 LC-LC fiber cable

And obviously a switch that accepts the type of cable. If possible I'd like switches <200 as this is my home/business connection and not a huge network that will support a lot of users. 4-8 port depending on price, I don't mind running another switch for the Cat6 off the fiber switch if it's only a 2 or 3 port if that saves good amount of $$ too.

So questions:
- Where can I get 125 or so feet of the correct, quality, fiber with the ends on it already?
-- Can fiber be coiled at the end if I get too long?

- What are some good switch choices?
- Do all switches need "transceivers" for the fiber or do some come built in?

School me please

Answer:fiber help --- building to building

If you only need gigabit speeds, you can use fiber optic media converters on each end to change the fiber into gigabit copper, then connect that to a regular gigabit switch with a patch cable.

It may or may not be cheaper to go that route, depending on how hard it is to find a pair of gigabit switches that fit your needs, with the correct fiber connections.

Like it says in my signature at the bottom,my machine has a removable hard drive rack installed. I have 2 seperate units that I can switch back and forth. One has XP home and the other ME. The situation I'm trying to resolve is the ability to share data between them. Since they cannot both be installed at the same time. They are both running FAT32 so there should not be any compatibility problems. So I guess what I'm asking is: Can I install a second harddrive inside the case(where it mounted originally) and use that as a "storage only" .....non-bootable drive?
If so do you have any recommendations about particular drives?
The original is a 30gig IBM and the second is a 40gig Western Digital(WD400). I've never had any problems with either, but I have seen(in other forums) people "bash" some drives as being junk to start with.
Any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated

Geforce 8800gt 512mb video card
2 gigabytes GSkill gaming RAM
ASRock Aliven NF6G mobo
160 gigabyte western digital hard drive 7200 rpm

I was looking at a 500watt thermaltake purepower power supply priced at around 54 dollars on newegg. But I noticed on another thread that the amperage it provides may be lower than I need, so I need a second opinion, and if this one is inadequate, a similar PSU that provides the power I need for about the same price and maintains quality, a.k.a. >70% efficiency at load at the very least.

PLEASE help me because I want to make sure that this system will work when I put it together. Also, I would appreciate any other opinions on the hardware I'm choosing. For instance, the mobo. Is anything else out there?? I do alot of photoshop, dreamweaver, and flash, all at the same time. Add web browsing, chatting on AIM, and listening to music as well. Will this system be able to handle that, I was considering upping the ram to 4gb or will just 2 gb suffice...?? or is everything im putting together just straight overkill, but in this computer world, nothing is more fun than overkill...

Answer:Need Opinions

Well, its certainly not overkill! But if you are going to be doing a lot of webpage design then you will want more storage than the Raptor can provide. A 500GB WD or Seagate would give you lots of room.

Question: Need Opinions

I'm getting a new system in a few weeks time, and I'm thinking about going for either an Alienware desktop or an Mtech system - I've just priced up a very good Alienware package, but was just wondering - should I go for Vista or stick with XP Pro SP2? As I haven't worked all that much with Vista, i'm not exactly sure what to expect - although i must admit, i do like the GUI. Also, who thinks i ought to upgrade from the Dual Core to a Quad core? Anyone running a Quad core system? The Quad core would be an extra $800.

I know of some others I have had a look at but am wary these days because of the hype.

Answer:Just want some opinions on these

John, I've used aswMBR, rkill, RootkitBuster, and Sophos Virus Removal Tool at various times just as second opinion on-demand scanners. Sophos is slow and doesn't give any indication of how far along the scan is. It leaves the user guessing if the scan will finish in 10 minutes, half an hour, or something else. The others just chug along and apparently do their thing.

I have a clean system. To the best of my knowledge I've never been infected. So all of the scanners give a "0 threats found" mesage. Does that mean my computer is really clean, or does it mean the scanner just didn't find something that was deeply hidden?

Hi mate...

Just played the demo, not the full game yet. Well it's a good game but it depends on your taste. If you want the WWII background you may be disapointed...

Of course you can play it. I could play it with my C2D E6300, 2GBs of RAM and my poor GF7600GS at good frame rates, with anti-aliasing (2x though) at 1024x768 and most settings to medium...So your 7800 will have no problems. But you may need to sacrifice some visual settings, possibly because of your RAM. Still looks great though.

Well, something happened on the way to pick up my new computer

I was talking to the Manager that was handling the return when showing him what I wanted when he asked if I had looked at the VPR Matrix line (I know, he's trying to push his own line), but had a look at it anyway and thought I'd at least have a look around the net and ask here.

Now they have one that's along the same line as the Compaq ($100 cheaper I think) but they also had one where the biggest difference between it and the Compaq is that it has a DVD RW with it and is $200 more than the Compaq.

I've looked around the net and haven't found any really negatives about them ( one of the little rubber feet on a laptop fell off on a few of them, but that's the most I've come across.

The differences so far I've seen is supposedly these machines aren't as prioritary as other name brands and don't come crammed with all the stuff others make you take. But on the other hand it say's it doesn't come with "alot" of software the others get in packages.

Also their site has "download drivers", "FAQ", "Get Started Guide" ect, so the help and tech help seems to be there.

This is an article about it (desktop opinion is half way down) am still looking for specifics on it including software but if you have any opinions it would be very much appreciated.

Question: WGU opinions?

Hey guys, I know a lot of people on here are networking professionals. So thought i'd get a temperature reading on what many of you think of WGU (Western Governors University).

I really want to get a B.A. in Information Technology, but I'm already 28, and I don't know if I could finish a brick/mortar school. Mostly due to the fact that I work full time! And no job that I can find that can support me and give me the time needed to complete a traditional 2-4yr degree at say (Chico, Sacramento State, or CSU Monterey Bay).

I mean, I know a few people look at online schools as a step-down, but this is regionally accredited by the Northwestern Commission. So how does it truly compare?

Does anyone here have exp with this school, or is apart of a HR hiring dept that can provide any feedback on the actual outlook of this school?

Answer:WGU opinions?

I've heard nothing but positive things about them. I would go over to and check their thread on it. They have a big thread on it with multiple people who got their Bachelor and Masters their.

This is my first time to find and use and so far i am loving it. One of the things i have tried searching for i have not seen straight answers on is some of the questions i got....

1> What would you recommend for software firewall???

2> What would you recommend for spyware blocker???

3> What would you recommend for pop up blocker??

I have used ZoneAlarm for awhile and really have had no problems but i am looking for the best to since my new computer is my life and my business! I am constantly on two seperate connections on and off all the time between home and work. But again i am looking for the best....

I have also used Adware + Adwatch for spyware and pop up blocker...i have noticed on my old computer that it mess it up where it won't load properly after deleteing something in the load processes...but after reinstalling xp pro and adware and adwatch the only problem i got is on the shut down process... adwatch makes xp hang on shut down...if i close it it shuts down properly...other than that i have noticed nothing wrong and they work wonders on popups...

What do i do??? I am a little lost and haven't been in to the latest computer stuff till recently and i want to hear the pros and cons from people that got the software to let me know what to try...I am switching my AV from Nortons to AVG since i have heard so much good stuff about it and i want to see for myself...thank you very much and let me know what you think

Question: Opinions Please

Last week 2 of our PC's failed. We were initially told by the 'firm' that are working on them, that both had defunct PSU's and one (let's call it PC2)also had a defunct heatsink/fan on the CPU.All these parts were replaced and PC2 was returned and appears OK (so far). When PC1 was fitted with the new PSU, it still didn't 'behave', so they tried an XP Pro repair. This didn't work either, so they concluded the HD needed to be formatted and XP re-installed. So they removed it into another PC and proceeded to copy all the data files off it, onto another HD, for later use.Now they tell me the Motherboard has an intermittent fault and the RAM is "definitely gone" and both need replacing.Question 1.If the HD was so corrupted that it needed formatting and XP re-installing, would they be able to get it 'live' and copy stuff of it by putting it into another PC?Question 2.If the RAM was "definitely gone", wouldn't this be clearly evident much sooner than this?Forgive my cynicism and I'm very willing to be 'put right' but it just doesn't 'feel right' to me.Your opinions would be very welcome.

Answer:Opinions Please

1) They SHOULDN'T be able to recover files, unless a) the files that are currupt are files that they didn't copy or b) they used "third party" software to recover the currupt data2)They in theory, should of saw the ram problem striaght away. Why did they change the PSUs? Didn't the system get any power?

Question: CPU Opinions

Currently I have a p4 2.6c socket 478.

I just bought a new MoBo that will take almost any LGA 775 CPU. I'm limited on funds so I'm looking at one of these 3. I do a lot of video editing and when I do web design I'll have several apps open (photoshop, front page, Windows media converter, IE and FireFox, etc.....). I'm happy with the way my CPU is now so I don't know if I need dual core, but I do want to get the best for my buck.
Please give me opinions on what would be best:
Intel Pentium Dual Core E2160 1.8GHz 800MHz 1MB S775 CPU $74
Intel Pentium D 915 2.8GHz 800MHz 4MB Skt 775 Dual-Core CPU $65
Intel Pentium 4 550 3.40GHz 800MHz 1MB Socket 775 CPU $65

I don't know the difference between the Pentium D and the Pentium Dual Core. I thought there was just Pentium D, then the core duo, then the core 2 duo, never heard of the dual core.

Working just fine here: Firefox, Win XPIt looks really nice and you've done a really good job with it BUT... sorry to be so negative but "all done in flash" is a big turn off straight away for me. I really can't be bothered to wait whilst Flash sites do stuff. This is especially true at home where I have an old Win98SE machine which loads pages very slowly (despite being on a fast BB connection).Flash also leads to all sorts of accessibility problems. For instance I found some of the text a tad small but it cannot be enlarged.

I just thought I'd post this thread to see people's opinions on Internet Explorer 7, since I just downloaded it today.

Personally, I find it a bit tacky. I don't like the way you can't change the layout of the toolbars, and it seems to briefly freeze when you click on links, right-click (anything), or open other programs.

I can't see it staying it on my computer for long, unless my dad likes it.

Question: I need opinions..

Okay i have a sony vaio right now, my info is on the bottom. Well im planning on updating for gaming purposes and plus my system is slower than i want it to be. So well the computer now taht i have is model Rx4462ds im pretty sure. I dont know what kind of mother board i have. If you people can please find out if its any good. I want to get a new vido card and a new cpu. So any suggestions for like a good price.. video card ill spend about 150 on and cpu im thinking of 2.4ghz 800fsb pentium 4. So what kind of video card do you people suggest? i want a geforce 4 but i dont know which one i want for the price and i want it to have good gaming preformance. Any opions would help.

Answer:I need opinions..

well, if you're looking at that CPU you will also need a new motherboard. The 800Mhz CPU's are new and need motherboards designed to take that those CPU's.

You should also find out the wattage of your powersupply - this should be marked on the powersupply itself. For the new system you may want to upgrade to at least a 350 watt powersupply(which may require a new case as well)

For the Video card I would not go with a GeForce4, I recommend a ATI Radeon Card in the 9000 series.

Without knowing the exact model of of Sony(not Rx4462ds) I don't know how much you can keep from your old system. Although you use Rambus Memory which is not the common type which is DDR. Its more expensive and few manufacturers use it. The harddrive and optical drives you can reuse.

I'm trying to get old home movies onto dvd from vhs - I'd rather do it myself than go through a commercial service.
I'm guessing the easiest way is through a dvd recorder / vcr combo, yes? - Any opinions on the quality of the conversion this way?
I wanted to put get the movies onto a pc for editing but that looks a bit complicated.

I know you can go from vcr to pc by way of a camcorder but the vcr i have doesn't have s-video out - (camcorder only has s-video and firewire connections)

any thoughts?

Answer:Opinions on best way to put vhs on dvd?

ohheck said:

That is the easiest and quickest way to go, but you're limited to just basic editing (starting and stopping the VCR tape at certain points).

The other way to do it is to get a TV card for your PC and record that way. You create .mpg files that you can edit with a DVD authoring program. It's not too hard but it's rather time consuming. The nice thing about it is you can create DVD's that have menus so you can jump to different sections on the DVD.

Hello to you all I would really appreciate your comments on a site I built for my wife a couple of years ago before I try to update it. the site is click hereThanks in advance

Answer:Opinions please

Are quite an easy way of web designing, but many hate them, and I converted my site from frames and used iframes instead. Frames are generally disliked because document readers won't read the whole page, and also people can't bookmark particular pages. Essentially sites with frames don't get a particularly good press here!Otherwise the site seems pretty clear and says what it wants to. There are a few little things that aren't quite aligned - sometimes the view basket overlies the image of the card you're trying to sell. The navbar also 'seasonal' in bold, plus 'special friends' is also not aligned properly. There's a bit more work to be done - websites can be a huge headache - but perservere, and people here will be more than happy to help!

ATI HD 5850 1gb 256 bit

You should tell us what you plan on using your computer for.

Question: Need some opinions

Hi I just finished running the trendmicro housecall virus scan / Vulnerability. And it all was fine once it finished but it showed me this vulnerability:Vulnerability in Routing and Remote Access Could Allow Remote Code Execution (911280). saying I should download this I wanted to make sure this was a security update so I went and checked windows update and it didnt find the update. When I go to the microsoft website it shows this file in the new download. I downloaded it but I never installed it when I was about to install it it told me "Before you install this update, we recommend that you: -Back up your system - Close all open programs" So I wanted to know should I install this or would it delete most of my files since its telling me to back up my system.

Answer:Need some opinions

Well... two things.

First off the message you received is pretty common. It is always a good idea to backup before installing anything.

Second, most people don't and it all goes fine. Your call.

(jk... if so I wouldn't have a job)

Seriously, it is still a relatively controlled environment at work. So i'm going to post a question I've recieved just wondering if anyone has had similar experiences.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

btw - If it's against the rules to helping a sister out, I understand and won't be offended whatsoever.

I have a Dell inspiron 5160 laptop. We travel quite a bit and I wanted to use it when we were on the road in various motels. At home we have a linksys router and a card so that I am able to use it on a different floor and in various rooms. I have never been able to get it to work in a hotel or motel, even the ones that say they have wireless in all rooms. What is my problem? Can it be corrected?

Answer:Your Opinions Please!

Well, they don't say exactly what happens. Can they see the wireless connection when they are in the motel? And their laptop won't connect to it? Or do they not see the connection at all? They could have it set to automatically connect to the one set up at home. They would have to have it look for the signal in the hotel and then click on it to connect.

Very happy to find a place like this. I would greatly recommend any opinions or suggestions regarding my prospective new system. I am an extremely busy filmmaker and my business has exploded over the last 12 months. I have outgrown my 02 Gateway and am looking to custom build my next system.

Here's what I have in mind:

Intel D915PBLL Motherboard and P4 540 3.2Ghz CPU

Ultra 1024MB PC4200 DDR2 533MHz Memory (x2)

Maxtor / 250GB / 7200 / 8MB / SATA-150 / OEM / Hard Drive (x2 for C: & D: drives) *I currently use a Maxtor 200GB external, Seagate 200GB external and an Acomdata 250GB external for video.

PNY Quadro FX 500 / 128MB DDR / AGP 8X / VGA / DVI / Video Card

Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 OEM Sound Card

SONY DRU720A / 16x8x16x DVD+RW / 16x6x16x DVD-RW / 4x DVD+RW DL / 48x24x40x CD-RW / Internal DVD±RW Burner (E: Drive)

SONY 16x internal DVD+/-R Burner OEM (F: Drive)

Are there any opinions or suggestions about this group of components? Any suggestions for machines that deal strictly with hours of video editing?

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Answer:Opinions on possible PC

You have selected some very nice components, BUT...

Your chosen motherboard is PCI Express and your chosen card is AGP. These don't match.
Look at nVidia for more details:

Also have a look at Plextor's SATA DVD-writers, such as PX-712SA or later.
They go easier on your CPU than Sony's products.
After all that mobo has four SATA-connectors!

Alright guys...its that time again....

Im going to be buying RAM. Id like to get 2 gigs. My motherboard supports up to 4 Gigs of PC3200 Dual Channel Memory(Asus A8N SLI-Deluxe) The A8N does NOT support DDR2. Incase it matters im also running an AMD 64 4000+ Clawhammer, and a Thermaltake TruePower 680 Watt PSU.

So heres the skinny. I'd like to NOT go over $200, but if its for a good cause, lay it on me. Im a HUGE gamer, and I also like to Make Music with Fruity Loops Producer Studio, and graphics using Photoshop CS2. Hopefully I've provided enough info for some good opinions. Thanks, once again for your help guys. Have a good one.

Question: Opinions?

This is probably the wrong forum for this but please bear with me..... I live in the country and I'm looking into wireless internet. The company I'm looking at has a package for 512K up/down for $49.99. They also have 256 up/down but I'd at least like to have the 512. Now I know that's guarenteed but it's all I can get. My computer is currently at my sister's (they have cable) and it's a burden for them and myself Couldn't deal with dial-up. $50 /month to steep?? This is only thing available besides satellite and those prices are ridiculous.

i pay 50$ a month and get 2032.9 Kbps with ... although w/ firefox bandwidth tester extension I get between 250-1000k .. but 50$ for 512k isn't too bad .. as for normal internet surfing that's more than enough, unless you are going to use your computer to host a website and/or as an FTP server that gets alot of traffic you should be fine

Question: Opinions of AOL

I'm trying to get an idea of how people feel about AOL. I currently use earthlink, but my friend says aol is awesome. I used it for several years (about 3 years ago) and I wanted to die after I used it, so it is better now or something?
