clueless and getting worse!

Question: clueless and getting worse!

Hi To All!
I'm having some difficulties trying to reformat my friend's computer...she is currently running Windows NT which hasnt run properly from it was installed, we are now trying to install Windows 98.
I managed to run FDisk and deleted her non- dos partitions and NTFS but it will not allow me to format C: it keeps telling me bad command or file name at A> prompt
Can anyone help!

Preferred Solution: clueless and getting worse!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all,

I started the day on a high note, before turning on the computer that is, thinking I was going to get some things done. This was not to be: So we start at:

FAIR:
After XP loaded it said that it had recovered from a serious error Product ID _251... so I did some digging around and got some info from microsoft's web pages complete with registry fixes (deleting bad entries, etc.)

I did a quick scan with malwarebytes and it found some stuff that I deleted and when I did a restart it didn't come up correctly.

Went into safe mode and it came up.
(made a HUGE mistake here. Did not copy files I wanted to save when I had the opportunity)
Closed out of safe mode and let it start normally.
Would not boot normally.
Tried to boot in to safe mode and now its recycling back to POST, we have gone to...
BAD:
Hmmm. So I thought how about putting the XP disk in and then do an install leaving file system intact.
When I got to the point of doing the install I chickened out because it said that it might delete the My Documents folder (had some things in there I didn't want to lose) I've done this procedure before and perhaps I should have taken the second opportunity to recover gracefully but I did not.

I hit F3 to cancel out of the install to try and boot from my other HD that has XP (but with some driver issues that I had yet fixed.)

I went into the CMOS to change boot order and notice that the hard drive (the one that I was trying to boot into is not showing ... Read more

Test the HDD with the drive manufacturers disk tools (preferably using a different PC). Run the short and long tests. If either test fails or has errors, the drive is faulty.

Hi everyone,
My bottom fan on my PC was being very loud, so I opened up my case and unplugged the power supply, and flicked off the power switch on the back. I unscrewed the bottom fan and dusted it a little bit, and then I put it back together how it was before.

The part that I unscrewed also contained my hard drive, and now that it is reseated I cannot boot.

At first I got an error when booting:
Loading operating system . . .
disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter.

THEN, I tried making sure everything was connected well and tight, and now I am not getting anything displayed on my screen.

Apologies for the lack of knowledge and thanks for the help.

Jeremy

Answer:Boot problem, getting worse and worse

It is possible that when you removed the fan and hard drive, you plugged the hard drives SATA cable into a different SATA port on the motherboard. Get into the bios, and make sure that the hard drive is being detected properly

I was curious if anyone out there knows anything about this...

I have a self-built computer, three years old now...and day by day it's getting worse and worse!

AMD Athalon XP @ 1.1 GHz
512MB PC2700 DDR-SDRAM
Windows XP Pro.
Radeon 9500 Pro. 128MB DDR

The problems started about six months ago--every time I'd turn on the computer, it'd scan the hard drive for errors, claiming an improper shutdown. Then, two months ago, it started going to a black screen saying a windows file is corrupt, use the XP CD to restore the file--but simply restarting the computer at that point would get it going (only came up on a fresh start).

Then in the recent times, the screen is completely black. I turn on the computer, and no signal is sent (I'm guessing) to the monitor, so it's just flashing the power light...but after waiting approximently 10seconds, and restarting ('reset button'), it would go to the other problems--file corrupt screen, then the error scan...and this latest time, it took 4 resets for the screen to catch a signal...

All wires are plugged in good, and everything seems to be functioning properly, except for, of course, this problem I have...and I really have no idea where to start on fixing this. I planned on keeping this computer for another year or so--and hope this can be fixed! Anyways, any ideas/suggestions, please let me know!

Thanks,
-X

Answer:My Computer - Getting Worse & Worse! Is there hope?

take the graphics card out and insert it back in firmly making sure it is sat properly in its slot. check the manufacturers websites for your motherboard and graphics card and see what the bios updates do, and see if they have any FAQ's to check if anyone else has been having similiar problems to you in terms of people who have the same motherboard or graphics card??

Email the manufacturer(s) for your motherboard company and graphics company.

i've had verizondsl for about half a year or so now, and from last month to present, the connection has been horrible.. sometimes it would just hang for up to a minute at a time, with the modem activity light blinking slowly (loss of connectivity).. before it started, speeds were decent, and although slow compared to the optimum cable i was used to, it was sufficient. now it's just pure garbage. if it weren't for the fact that we're getting free cable, i would immediately switch to roadrunner

i figure asking you guys is probly much more helpful than those scripted outsourced fools at tech support. i tried all that "reset your modem" "unplug the ethernet cord" "make sure you're computer is on" crap already and would like some REAL answers..

PS- at my old house, we used to have verizon as well, and after a while it just stopped all of a sudden and when we called to see what happened, they said since there was construction in the area, they must have switched our phone line over to one with a further CO, and we were now too far to service. verizon is teh gay.

Answer:verizondsl getting worse and worse speeds

Well try plugging the modem into the demark jack if you have one (by where the phone line comes into your house). See if this still happensl. If it doesn't maybe something happened to your internal phone lines. (this probalby won't be the issue I'm betting).

Beyond doing that phone your ISP and get them to file a support ticket or whatever they call it there. When I was having trouble with my DSL connection a couple years ago I phoned up, they sent a guy from the telephone company to test the line and they replaced a device at the CO and the connection has been perfect ever since.

Initially it was Edge not working properly, now it mostly crashes. Even the new "amazing" feature of tab previews doesn't work properly. Imagine, I moved back to Chrome after so many years of being a happy IE user. Cortana was a bit iffy with "Hey Cortana". Now she doesn't listen to what I say at all, even when I press the button. The notification center has its own mood. Often decides to hide until I restart for absolutely no reason at all. Same goes for the sound volume and other flyouts on the desktop.
In short, there is massive degradation of various major features with every new build. And since I post all the issues I find using the feedback app, I know it is not just me experiencing these things. This is disastrous.
So, is it just me or you experience similar issues yourself?

Answer:Is it just me or does Windows 10 get worse and worse with every new build?

It's just you.

Hello my new bestest friends. I need help ! (as does everyone who comes here) My computer has been running like a bag of you know what for about 3 weeks. IE became corrupt and will not start even after uninstalling and re installing Versions 6 & 7. However this is not the problem as I am currently using safari and finding it great. The problem lies with my computer and it's sluggishness, ever since IE became corrupt my computer seems to have slowed. I am getting occasional Internal memory (blue dos screen) errors and several other little glitches like windows XP's search program will not close after I perform a file search. I have performed several Virus & spyware checks such as AVG and Spyware Doctor also several registry progs like registry Booster.AVG comes up clean, however Spyware Doctor and Registry Booster both show a lot of Registry errors inluding heaps of lnk file and url files. I removed most of these the first time around but discovered it to have deleted all my shortcuts and bookmarks that I much needed (well not so much the shortcuts) It did not remove the actual .exe files but was a major hassle as my dektop shortcuts where wiped. So I performed a system restore and now have everything back.I am wondering are/have these files become corrupt or is this just overkill on the software (spyware Doc & reg booster) behalf?? I have also noticed in my Hijack this log that there are several (missing files).I am so in need of help as i use my computer to p... Read more

Hi guyz, I have recently downloaded a movie in avi format. However when i try to convert it to dvd using winavi it tells me the program is not responding and closes automatically. All other avi are convering fine and the file plays great on my computer. Please help me out here, I hope above is understandable enough for u to be of some assistance.

Answer:please help, i'm new and clueless!

This is not uncommon for downloads. Sometimes, they are faulty (or download has glitches) and, although they are good enough to run as is, they will not convert, merge or process through any program. I don't know winavi - if its shareware, it may be too cheap to cope. You may do better with some of the more expensive ones, but even that is not guaranteed.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below link to properly use HijackThis and attach a log:
Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis

When you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat[/B]
CounterSpy - ONLY IF you were not able to run Windows Defender

As a musician I have two sites that I am connected with, both of which have been put together by a very competant and good friend. However his workload is making it difficult to keep the sites current and consequently I would love to know how to build a website myself. This is the problem though, I have NO experience of website building or any kind of computer programming whatsoever. I can use one without problems but that's it. I also have a tough schedule and don't want to spend my life learning how to be a programmer. I need an 'easy to understand and operate' system that a complete learner can tackle and I have no problem paying for it. Does this kind of software exist? Thanks in advance,Ian.

Answer:Help me I am clueless!!!

Free on the April PC Advisor cover disk. You should be able to import the existing site, modify it in NOF, and republish it. It doesn't require much knowledge of HTML. It is much like a page layout program. Place a text frame, graphic, or table on the page. Drag a navigation bar onto the master border. Drag margin guides to adjust the size of the page or drag elements to resize and reposition them. If you post a link to your site, I will check to see if it can be imported with at least some degree of success. My website click here was built with NetObjects Fusion MX, free on an earlier PC Advisor disk. I taught myself since I started with NOF version 2.02 about two years ago.

I have been having this same problem with my computer for about a week or so, and nobody can seem to help me diagnose what the problem is. I have been told things from "your logitech mouse drivers are out of date" to "your cpu is overheating". Please advise.I run Windows XP Home edition, an AMD Athlon XP processor and 1GB of RAM.Recently, I uninstalled Norton Systemworks 2005. Afterwards, I was prompted to restart my computer for the changes to take effect. Upon restart, *just as my desktop loads*, my computer gives me the BSOD and restarts itself. I am only able to access my computer through Safe Mode (which I am currently on). I went to My Computer, disabled "auto-restart on system failure" (so that I could get time to read the BSOD), and tried rebooting. This is the message it gives me.IRQL_LESS_NOT_EQUALA few odd things about this:One of the Symantec technical support guys had me go into my system and delete all folders, files and registry keys that had anything to do with Symantec. After doing this and rebooting, I *was* able to access my computer in Normal mode. I was then advised to download and run a certain program from Symantec that would automatically find and remove any remaining Symantec software from my computer. After running this program I was prompted to restart once again, thus leading me back here. Same BSOD, but no more Symantec products to delete.PLEASE HELP ME! The 3 most common Vista troubleshooting tools are:

1) Go to Start and type "perfmon /report" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Let the report run, and then let us know about any of the items that are noted down to the Software Configuration heading.

2) Go to Start and type "perfmon" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Click on the Reliability Monitor in the left hand pane, and look for the errors in the right hand pane - let us know what they say. If there's too many, just use the last few days.

3) Go to Start and type "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter. In the left hand pane, click on Windows Logs, then click on the System log files - then check in the right hand pane for errors around the time of the shutdown. You can also check the Application log file for errors in case this generated an error that could have caused this (but it's less likely than the System log files).

Can someone help me create it or point me to something that will show me how to make it. I am totally clueless when it comes to making spreadsheets! This is what I need....

I am trying to teach my kids the value of a dollar. So they have to earn everything that they want for a while. I am "paying" my kids an hourly wage towards whatever it is that they want to buy for chores done around the house. So what I need is something that tracks hours, by $/hr and a column that I can list the thing that they want, another column that shows the amount of that item. Essentially what it will do is track how many hours, how much money made and how much is left to earn for the item they want.

I hope this makes sense. Anyone out there that can help a mom out?

Also, when trying to access any utilities like control panel, etc..., I get, "windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" and I am unable to open anything...I have a broadband dsl connection with the sbc yahoo anti-spy loaded. Any help would be much appreciated!!!

Answer:please help a clueless guy!

Please download Ad-aware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Go to this site to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

Download and install Spybot S&D. Run Spybot and click on the Search for Updates button. Install any updates if they are available. Next click on the Check for Problems button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the Fix Selected Problems button. Exit Spybot.

If the problem continues please download HijackThis. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Post the whole log file here. Do not fix anything since most of them listed there are harmless (some are system required). This program will help us determine if there is any spyware/malware on your computer.

Question: Clueless

Hi everyone,

I have a laptop (advent 6470) that I've had for about a year and a half. I have a broadband connection and through that I got that lovely Sasser virus, and also sasser b i think. I used norton anti-virus to do a full scan and found the viruses and downloaded the various programmes to et rid of it. My computer is now virus free (i have done another full virus check with norton and it says it's totally clear). But sometimes when I turn it on it won't let me do anything until i go into task manager and restart explorer. Also it's been over-heating a lot recently and turning itself off after only a few hours of use. This never happened before and I can't find any reason why it's doing this.

Any ideas?

Thank you!

Answer:Clueless

Sounds like a cooling problem or a problem with the power supply. What are the system specs of this laptop?

Hello and welcome to TSF

Apologises for the delay getting to your log. The helpers here are all volunteers and we have been very busy lately. If you are still having malware problems, follow instructions below.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Do not post that log, instead, do this next:

About a week and half ago, I got a critical error when restarting. My computer has a history of just randomly locking up, requireing me to reset it on the front of the case. When I reset all my windows options after the critical error, it never booted back up. Sounded like everything came on fine except nothing on the screen and no windows signs. Few days later when I was trying some things, the computer wouldnt even turn on. Mobo light was on but nothing happened when I pushed the power button.

Someone suggested buying a new PSU since nothing was turnning on. Bought an ANTEC 500watt PSU from newegg. Installed it and once again, nothing but the mobo light.

Any suggestions?!?!

I was wanting to get a laptop with this huge bonus I'm recieving from the military. I don't know a thing about building from the ground up but would like to build my laptop rather than just buy one. I've looked at your stickies here but they seem to be for desktops.

I will be using it for basically everything and would like to not need a desktop because my possible laptop would be so rockin. I'm not the kind of person that just wants you to tell me what I should get and I put it together and thats that. I want to learn about what is good, what isn't and really get into the process of building this.

Also, I was wondering if I should even bother with a high end laptop and build a desktop instead... Any help here??

Answer:Clueless

There are only a couple of sites that will actually let you "build" a laptop. 95% of the time it is just like going to Dell and just choosing your parts. The other 5% are those couple of places that actually let you buy stuff and jsut get a core for a laptop and build it up.

So if you really want power, a desktop would be better. The CPU's in a desktop can be more powerful since they dont have to worry about heat as much. Since there is better cooling available for a desktop. Not to mention graphics. You can get a much better setup for graphics cards with a desktop with the possibility of SLi'ing top end cards over the SLi offers for laptops.

So really it all depends on what you plan on doing with the system.

SemperiF,

Welcome to TSG!

Go to Start > Run. Enter msconfig and click OK.

Go to the Startup tab. Uncheck the items you do not want to load whenever Windows starts.

If you are unsure of which items are safe to uncheck and which are not, go to the link below and enter the name. It will give you a description of what it is.

Hello. I would like to upgrade my desktop PC from Win98 to WinXP. I was told that it is best to do a clean install. However, I have no friggin' idea how to format my hard drive and need someone to give me simple ABC style directions or maybe direct me to a web page that can help me out.

Answer:HELP ME...I'm Clueless!

Actually, all you need to do is BOOT from the Windows XP CD.

Put the CD in, ignore the autorun 'do you want to upgrade' window, restart.

Pay attention to the screen, when it asks if you want to run setup, press Enter.

Once setup loads it is fairly simple and easy to format your drive, it will tell you what to press to do what you want, so follow the instructions.

Remember, formatting will erase ALL data, so if you have programs or files you want to KEEP, than formatting is not what you want unless you have backed up your files on a separate media. If this is the case, than just choose "upgrade" when you insert your XP CD from Windows.

Good Luck.

I have a data cord for my diabetic glocumeter that I had used on my desktop. The connecter end is a 9 pin adapter with holes not the actual pins. I have recently transitioned to a lap top which dosn't have the 9 pins (with the pins) just the holes.. so now I have holes to holes and no way to connect. So I bought a "Prolific Usb to Serial Comm Port (COM4)" to attach and make it USB friendly .. unfortunately the connector peice runs on a 32 bit and I am running a 64 so the drivers for the connector wont install. This is all totally greek to me. Can I switch to a 64? I googled a 64 bit driver for this thing and didn't get much help. Do I toss it and buy a 64 bit connector? I'm so lost

Answer:32 bit vs 64 bit? So clueless

Hi kassy,

Welcome to the forum,

Let's not toss anything yet, the connector itself isn't 32/64 bit specific, after a little searching, I ran across this post that might help with your problem.

Question: Truly Clueless

I don't even know where to start. Well a couple months ago i kept on having tabs open in firefox of unrelated websites no matter what site i went to. And then a few days ago my computer had a rogue antivirus named "Antivirus Action" come up. The last thing i remembered weird happening was something about Java popped up and that was it. Antivirus Action blocked me from opening anything to possibly help me even task manager and firefox. I tried using rkill and smitfraudfix neither worked. I went into safe mode and ran smitfraud and mbam and then just MBAM and when i was done and restarted the virus still popped up saying everything was infected. I eventually downloaded ESET and it found quite a few malrware/virus and i restarted and my computer seemed to work. But I believe there is many still lingering and I have this pop up everytime i log on "Windows cannot open this file: Updates from HP.exe.vir" What do I do to ensure the safety of my computer?

Question: Clueless about PSU

Ok, so I almost got all the parts for my new system picked out. I'm having trouble deciding on a case and PSU. I'm a little lost because I don't want to pay a lot of money for a large PSU. The specs I have so far:

GIGABYTE GA-P55-USB3

i5-750

G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Dual Channel

XFX HD-477A-YDFC Radeon HD 4770 512MB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16
(*Note: this card says it requires 450W)

Kingston SSDNow V Series SNV425-S2BD/64GB 2.5" Desktop Bundle 64GB SATA II

WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200RPM HDD
(*Note: This is not on my list to buy as I already have on in my current system)

I still haven't picked out a DVD burner yet, but I thought this may be enough to get some help on choosing a power supply. I'm new to computer building and i'm unsure the difference between a 24 pin main connector (the mobo has a 24-Pin power pin) and a 20+4 pin. I also want to be sure I don't get a PSU that has more power than I need, but I want to ensure it'll give me some room for if I add 1 or 2 more hard drives in future (which I hope to do). Keep in mind i'm trying to stay under $900 for the whole build (it was originally $800 but not sure that's gonna happen, lol), and may decide on a cheaper SSD later (though right now i'm considering kicking it and just using the HDD in my current system). I'd like to not go over $100 on a GPU (and not over $50 on a case). But like I said, ... Read more

Earlier this eveing AVG kicked up a warning that SHeur2.hfs had been detected and I quarentined it.

Now explorer is shutting down and then opening up again every 10 seconds or so... and then shuts down completely.

(I can make it run manually, via task manager (new task etc... for a few seconds) but nothing more)

Ive managed a system restore with some fast clicking (anything explorer based shuts down after a few 10 / 15 seconds and then re loads, but nothing...

I managed to get a Hi jack log... (three attempts later, with lightning quick clicks )

I guess its a mess, but as the title sugests I am clueless about this kind of thing...

So basically am I knackered or what...

Any advice is already very, very much appreciated...

Question: Clueless with RAM

So, as soon as I saw another post on a messageboard about a 256meg chip of that Tonicom ram that just came back into stock i sent out an order for it..
Well the lady calls me and turns out its on backorder already so she offered me something else and I said what the hell, right? I mean i dont know anything about it anyway..
She offered me the Kingmax 256: http://www.memorysuppliers.com/kin25pc6nssd.html

Is there a huge difference between the two? I really dont know... My other question, right now im still plugging it into the same old piece of junk HP mother board that came with the original computer that ive been toying with for the past few years: http://www.hp.com/cposupport/personal_computing/support_doc/bph04777.html#P9_162

Now I noticed that it said max 256 (2x128) that looks like a problem, as well as not seeing the Intel440ZX on the compatibility chart with that ram... This isnt going to work is it? I should probably invest in a new mobo eh?

Any help you could give would be great, thanks!

Answer:Clueless with RAM

I've found that, as long as you stick with Lifetime Warrantee, or even 1 year warrantee RAM, the differences are basically nothing. If you get 30 day warrantee RAM you are playing Russian Roulette but the good stuff is pretty much all the same if the specs match.
As far as your old HP motherboard... kill it. Just kill it. We did a whole slew of upgrades a month or two ago and with the price drops since then, you can probably get into an Athlon 1GHz, on a respectable board, and including a new case for less than $200. If you can afford it, do it!

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning pr... Read more

As a long time Windows 98SE user, this Windows XP problem has me stumpped.

Usually I delete something and forget about it...this time I need it back...lol

It is set it to show ALL files/folders and

extentions. However, when I scoped out the Recycle Bin, its properties

show 30 some odd files, BUT I cannot see the individual files that

are supposed to be in the Bin. When I click on any "Recycle Bin" icon,

the bin is produced, but is blank of any listing of the files in it.

When you click file in 98SE you have the option to restore-not here...

I can go to view and see check all but still shows nothing-yet I know these files are there

and it's not like they are 'special' they are gifs and jpgs from graphic work

I tried a reboot and still nothing

Can anybody help???? Thanks in advance.

Some malware likes to shut off Windows and security application updates to protect itself. That would be my first suspect.

Yes please go back and actually complete all of the instructions.

You seem to have skipped step 0 of the READ ME since I still see Viewpoint Manager installed.
It looks like you skipped step 2 or did not do it properly.
You still have multiple antivirus program installed. See step 3.
CounterSpy (or AVG Antispyware as a replacement) was not run and the log was not attached.
GetRunKey was not run since the log was not attached.
ShowNew was not run since the log was not attached.
Also you need to describe what problems you are having.

Okay, last night I was playing fine on my built PC with windows 10, everything worked and nothing was wrong. But when I started it this moring it was greated by an unusually long lasting black screen on startup and was only able to see my mouse. That's problem #1. Now I bypassed this by hitting space bar and entering my password to log into my computer.

After logging in I see that all of my icons on my desktop are gone. I tried to open chrome from my taskbar and the taskbar shows that its open but noting appears on my screen when I try to acess it. This is the same with all of my apps.

I also can't see any of the icons on the bottom right hand of my desktop either .(such as the wifi signal and the volume mixer) I can hit my windows button and can navigate a menu that's is contained in that box. But can't open anything.

I've tryed restarting, ctrl alt del only brings me to another black screen. I am currently posting from my phone.

This is my full build. I have had no problems with the computer before today. I talked to a windows hotline and they told me that they wanted $110 to have someone helpe instal it.

Win 2000 shows all the updates but will not install SP1.
I can use both Os's allright, but multitasking sometimes gets errors and is very slow. I tried scandisk on both partitions, and I use a page defrag everytime I reboot. Ohh here is something that totally trips me out is when in win 2000 my xp partition shows up as drive E. But My Xp is actually on Drive D. Win 200 says D is my cdrom. I can try to do a clean install and just use one OS if I Cant get this fixed. BTW my specs arerocessor

Hey,
Ok, so my girlfriend is stressed out to the eyeballs with computer security, and says she'd go to Linux if software ran on it lol!!

She downloaded Comodo firewall and some malware thing from them too tonight. When they were fully installed she tried to access the internet through Internet Explorer. Comodo "learns" things that the computer is supposed to do and things you want it to do. So, it comes up with a million and one pop up warnings asking you if you want to "allow" "block" etc. So, as she tried to get on the net it came up with loads of "severe" warnings about a program called iexplore.exe. Comodo classes this file as safe usually but it did not recognise this version. She didn't know this at the time, so she allowed it to do all sorts. Then she got worried when iexplore.exe tried to run iexplore.exe... it seems we have two of them, and this is dodgy right?! There's also TWELVE svchost.exe's running at the same time!! It started with two, i checked again, it was six, then twelve...What the hell?! I can't help but worry that some distant hacker will end up with some rather nice new stuff using my credit card! lol.

Then it started having fits about explorer.exe not being recognised either. Comodo has over a million things automatically "white-listed" and these should be in it according to them. Which can only raise suspicions to malware of some kind. Did a little research and it's not really got me anywhere... Read more

I've been wondering...what are these benchmarking tests I read a hear about?

1. What do they do?
2. Which ones are there?
3. How do I conduct them?
4. What are good results?

Answer:Clueless on benchmarking

What do they do - Help you compare your system's performance with that of other systems

Which ones are there - The two main ones today are 3DMark03 and Aquamark 3

How do I conduct them - Just download them and start the program!

Good results depend on your video card. While a GeForce FX 5200 will likely score under 1000, a GeForce 6800 Ultra will likely be well over 12,000!

Try not to laugh. I have no clue what's going on with my PC. Started about a month ago. I ran PopThis and Ad-Aware. Seemed okay for a while. No more ads, however, my PC is extremely slow and I'm getting booted out and messages indicating I am "Dangerously Low on Resources".

I'm running Windows 98 (1E).

I've seen folks post what they see. All I can tell you is when I go to my task manager, the list is rather large. Not sure what any of it means. This is what I see when I have no applications running, right after reboot, and of course, after about 15 minutes.

Winnet

Welcome to TSG
You have some spyware in there at the very least.....

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

Then......

Click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

Then.........

Go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

Then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu)

Then
Download Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de

After installing, first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates.
Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED

Run an online antivirus check ... Read more

Hi everybody. I have heard good things about Lenovo so this is the company I have decided to buy my laptop from. I'm not a techie so all the features are overwhelming. However, I do know what capablities my laptop should have so here goes: 1. This laptop has to replace my desktop. I no longer want both a laptop and desktop like I have since the year 2000. I have an Apple Ipad so that and a laptop should be enough. 2. I am subscribed to the Adobe Creative Cloud for Photoshop. I'm starting a fashion blog so I need to upload and edit photos which will then be stored in the cloud. I have my excel and word files stored in Dropbox and Crashplan as well as a Western Digital hard drive so I'm thinking that hard drive space shouldn't be something that I should be splurging a lot on but not sure. 3. Other than photo editiing, I spend my time on my laptop surfing the web, I like to have multiple tabs open(my current laptop can't handle this) and playing youtube and lynda.com videos as well as Bigfish Hidden Object games, lol. So the photo editing will be the main duty of this laptop. So screen resolution/vibrancy or whatever the tech lingo for that is should be the best it should be. The ability to handle streaming video is a must so whatever controls that (RAM?) should be robust. As big of a screen as I can get so 17 inches is preferred for picture viewing. 4. My budget is to stay under 2k. 5. Not sure about swipe screens and what advantage they can offer me bu... Read more

Answer:Clueless on which laptop to buy..Please help.

I purchased the Lenovo W520 2 years ago and was able to install 16 GB of RAM, with 15.9 GB being used. I am very happy with my decision. You can run numerous applications such as Photoshop at the same time and the system barely notices.Do NOT worry about the size of the hard drive. External storage is dirt cheap.Focus on maximizing your RAM and seeing how much RAM the system will allow within your affordability range. RAM is also cheap. When you look for a machine, look for the RAM Maximum Memory capacity.Crucial is a great place to start:http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Lenovo/thinkpad-w520-%28dual-core%29

am so grateful I found this. Wonderful someone is willing to help...My computer was acting strangely so ran "spybot' - nothing found. Saw an ad for "spy hunter" and ran it. It reported I had "navnovell" (or was that novellnav) and "micro gaming". Not being familiar or confident yet about spy hunter...I did a little more searching and happily discovered this forum. I just ran 'hi jack-this' but was not certain which to delete. In addition wondered if the results included the items that spy hunter described as "severe'. I am posting my log below-and thank any or all for help with this.

Hi,
I hate to be redundant and pose a question that has been asked quite a few times, but I am begging for an answer/explanation regarding this issue. I have received the infamous 401 EVP Warning stating a lot of frankly frightening stuff (Big Brother's watching you, you may go to jail, etc.) My question is whether this is something legitimate and a cause for worry. Please tell me if this is a bogus warning or has my computer really been tampered with. I apologize for harping on the issue, but your help will be eternally appreciated.. Thank you!

Answer:Clueless about 401 EVP Warning.. PLEASE HELP

go to http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even

required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

for wireless printing from my laptop.

Can someone please point me in the right direction?

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium, have a brand new Epson Stylus Photo R380 printer and my laptop is a Dell Inspiron E1505. I use a D-Link wireless g router.

TIA for your help! :cool

Answer:Clueless on how to set up my printer

If you have only that one computer then you will need to get yourself a USB Print Server if you want to use your printer over your wireless connection.

If you have a Desktop, you can share the printer with your laptop.

Hope this helps...

iexplore.exe is taking up all the memory space when I check window task manager. And I've read the previous post and it told me I needed to make this new file called hijack in my directory, but I don't even know what a directory is, so I don't know how to create a new file there. Any kind of help here would be fabolous.

Answer:Absolutely clueless

Create a directory on your hardrive, to save HijackThis.exe, called c:\hijackthis. This is a mandatory step, for the backup and restore functions, of HijackThis, to be able to work.Download the latest version, from here.Read the pinned post in the HJT forum, hereThen, run a log, and post it in the HJT forum. Hi, I am needing some advice for my poor computer. This is the scenario: I constantly have spyware on here and I have 2 programs running constantly to block it but they dont. I have Norton Antivirus 2007 and a free download from Microsoft, I forget the name. By mid-day my comp is running super slow if I"ve been on the internet so I run Ad-AWare and Spybot(Both free versions) and they always come up with a plethora of things to be removed. I remove them, then restart and things run ok, a little slow but much faster than before. I told a friend about this and she told me about "hijack this" and I ran it and she looked at it and said there was something major on here and if I tried to remove it, it would fight back and screw things up worse maybe! SO she told me about this website she uses frequently and that people may be able to help me. So here I am asking for help. I also ran a free registry booter program (http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/lsass/) and it said I had 240 errors but would only fix 15 for free. It wanted me to buy their sofware before removing the 15 errors the free trial came with. I figued I"d give this forum a shot before buying anything.
THis was the log "hijack this" came up with. Any advice???

So I somehow seem to have gotten myself infected with some nasty, nasty trojan/malware/etc... I probably have it all.

I downloaded Spyware Doctor which was nice enough to detect the infections for me (that Ad-aware was unable to find), and I seem to have the following:

- Downloader.Tiny.ID
- Virtumonde
- Application.TrackingCookies
- Adware.Advertising
- Spyware.Known_Bad_Sites
- Adware.Comet_Cursor
- Trojan.Generic

AVG does not seem to detect the main problem, all it comes back with are tracking cookies.

These things seem to have infected everything from my registry, cookies, processes. I've been reading all over the web about these for two days, and anything I have tried (a lot) has not worked.

Before I go and dish out $30 for Mr. Spyware Doctor to remove this I thought I would post for some help, because some of you guys out there are pretty damn knowledgeable.

Some symptoms: 2 desktop icons that return even i delete them (Online Security Guide, Live Safety Center), security toolbar 7.1 on IE (i usually use firefox), tray icon with various virus alerts ([email protected], [email protected], performace warning), pop-ups, IE opening to some sites (like http://www.savetheinformation.com/v4...CD65C7CD590863 )

and also, my McAffee periodically detects and deletes various trojans, but they keep coming back!!

Please help.

At times I have had my computer back to (seemingly) normal, and then having it be back to infected on a reboot. I'm thinking this has to do with the shared folder?

Im led to believe maybe a windows update could be causing this issue, but i havent the slightest clue which one it is. I am new to overclocking, but I have quite a bit of knowledge in other aspects of computers.. I have an ECS MCP61PM-GM Motherboard, running a NON OEM BIOS that has the options I need for overclocking. The stock speed of my current processor, an AMD Athlon x2 5000+ is about 2.6ghz. I'd like to overclock it to 3.0ghz or higher. I've been fiddling around with the settings for a while, and for some reason, the clock multiplier setting keeps going back to default.. I've already changed the CMOS battery, and I know my BIOS isn't corrupted... Everything else works fine.. I could use some tips.. and trust me.. I'll return the favour..

Answer:Help me overclock, I am clueless

do you have a black edition cpu? if not, you cannot overclock by way of the multiplier--you can only go down.
to overclock not using the multiplier, you'd have to up the clock frequency in 5 mhz increments to be safe (base freq is 200mhz). you'd also have to possibly set your ram freq from 800mhz (i assume) to 667 mhz to assure yourself that you don't get the ram out of spec too much if you get an overclock that works. after making changes, boot into windows, fire up cpu-z to check where you're at and run an instance of prime95 to check your stability. repeat process until you blue screen during a prime95 run or if you can't boot into windows at all. adjust settings to last good config and see if it stays steady.
it's important to have an aftermarket heatsink/fan or liquid cooling in place.

i apologize if anything is fuzzy or unclear, i'm trying to remember this off the top of my head (and it's 1:30 in the a.m. right now)

I had 'smart internet protection 2011' pop up come on the screen saying my pc was infected. It was one where you have to pay. I didn't do so but couldn't get rid of it. I ran Malwarebytes on quickscan twice and rebooted but it still came back.
I have a 'whatever happens' contract that gives me access to help from Currys technical guys but all they ever suggest is to do a complete back up of files & data. On two occasions it worked out that it wasn't at all necessary as a system restore cured the problem. The same applied this tiem but I'm told the fake anti-virus could appear again.
Is there any way of resolving it if it does? Soemone suggested Rkill followed by malwarebytes. Is this a good solution?
I am completely a dumb blonde when it comes to computer jargon so need an idiots guide.
Thanks for any help.

Ok, so I got this new notebook (HP Pavilion series, came with a Broadcom 54g MaxPerformance 802.11g wireless card installed and apparently ready-to-use via the antenna macro button...) I'm way enthusiastic about taking advantage of the free wifi hotspots at coffeehouses and stuff around my town, but unfortuntely the baristas know less about gettng connected than I do!I'm running WinXP SP2 connection wizard, and when I try to connect to the coffeehouse (no, not a starbucks, this place offers free access to any customer,) or at least attempt to, everything seems to be working like clockwork, except that Iexplorer sends me to this "https://www.localhost.com" every time I try to do anything. I don't have the verbatim for my error message on hand, but basically the localhost.com thing is a blank page that requests username and password, which I don't have and noone at the coffeehouse seems to have one for me to use...Guest doesn't work, and I'm stumped. So, what vital (yet probably simple) piece of the puzzle am I missing? Do I need some login from the coffeehouse to get through? Do I need a special subscription (ie t-mobile or something like I do at starbucks) to access any free wifi hotspot? Did I just put in the wrong setting somewhere and don't know where to look? Please tell me what I need to do, or what references to check out, before I change some important setting and REALLY screw up my new notebook LOL!  Thanks in advance,&q... Answer:Clueless About 802.11 Connections

Local Host sounds like your system is trying to connect to its own IIS server.  Will your connection work at home or any other location? Now for the Grandmother explaination.. IIS is a web hosting service Microsoft puts on many computers (XP, Win2K, NT).  It allows you to make a website then store it on your own computer and allow others to view it.  This is a service you can turn on and off.You mentioned using SP2.  Have you turned off the 'special' new features such as firewall?  You should also verify that their 'net service is indeed operational by checking for hotspots (wireless connectivity).

I have no idea what I am doing with computers, and I tried to find out what to do but nothing made sense. The latest virus scan found a lot of stuff, most of which was taken care of, but a few weren't. They were Backdoor.SDBot.AKU and I-Worm.Sircam.A. How do I get rid of them? 2 things that are happening beyond being very slow are when you restart, it pops up that it cannot find C:\WINDOWS\System32\SVOhost.exe (not SVC, SVO), is this anything? and just recently it popped up with a strange looking window that it was forced to shut down and would in 60 seconds (there is nothing you can do but wait). So I have a pretty ancient computer. It's a Dell Dimension 2400... got it 4 years ago. I've done fairly well at keeping it healthy (well at least in my own personal naive opinion I suppose.) I am having an issue with something called Smart Browser and I KNOW that there has to be other crap weighing down my poor OLD comp.

All I know is, my husband's 18 year old brother has been staying with us and he's downloaded things that I have had no idea about and I'm just trying to restore working order on this machine to buy me time until I purchase a new one this summer.

I'm usually good at following directions so here is my Log copy and pasted. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:Need Help - Clueless About Malware

Hi and welcome to TSG,

Please close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of SDFix and make sure you are disconnected from the Internet after downloading the program but before extracting the files.
Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with SDFix and remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
Remember to re-enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the Internet.
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter
Choose your usual account.

Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Ser... Read more

I am a soccer Mom who has a 13 year old son who is making movies and therefore needs a better computer.

He has a birthday coming up, so I thought I might give him a new PC so he will have the capabilities that he needs. Also, he is a video gamer, so I suspect that he will be expanding from the Wii to the PC also.

Here's the rub - I know nothing about building computers other than it's cheaper than buying. I've changed hard drives, mother boards, modems and memory in my past, so I'm not really worried about assembling one from scratch. (If I should be - please somebody stop me! )

So, who can tell me where to shop, and make suggestions about what to buy? I do not know where to start.

Answer:Help me -Clueless wants to build

how much are you willing to spend or how much do you want to spend??????

Hi
Make sure you have already run Adaware, Spybot S & D(check for updates) as these will do a preliminary clean first. Some files below may not be present after running the above programs.

Then....
Turn off your System Restore SEE HERE Reinstate it when your log is cleaned and then create a new restore point.Close your browser window and run hjt in safe mode... HOW TO RUN SAFE MODE and have "Hijack This" fix all the following items by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting "fix checked".
Folders that have been highlighted RED in the log will need to be uninstalled.Check first as some folders maybe uninstalled via the Add/Remove program. Files highlighted in BLACK in the log will need to be removed from your hard drive. Make sure to have your system set to show hidden files and folders.. HOW TO SHOW FILES ..Please post a new log when finished...

I work in a small chiropractic office. We have 2 computers, my main office desktop which is running windows XP and my boss has a laptop that runs windows Vista. We got a new printer and it is hooked up to my computer, she wants to be able to print to it from her computer. We have DSL for internet and we both "hardwire" into it. We do not have a wireless system, but we do have a modem thingy so we can use the phones too. I have absolutly no idea how to set anything up, so if someone can talk me thru step by step it would be great!

Hi everyone,

With help from yourselves I've confirmed that my graphics card is cooked :dead:

The thing is I don't know where to start in terms of picking a replacement. I only wat to spend around £100 to £130 to keep me going until I replace my pc is 12 to 18 months but its all getting a bit confusing.

The two AGP(8x) cards I've been recommended are the ATI X800 GTO and The Geforce 6600GT. The former I can't seem to find anywhere and the latter seems to have a zillion different makes/variations.

Can anyone give me a starter for 10?

Answer:I'm clueless - New AGP card

What are the specs on your pc and are you a gamer?

I have a Toshiba p25-S609 and a Lexmark X7170 printer with wireless option N4050E and I can not get it to print with the wireless. I followed the installation instructions but i don't know how to set up the laptop to work with the printer.

Answer:Wireless-I'm clueless

"... i don't know how to set up the laptop to work with the printer."

That's an all-in-one, right? Isn't there a User Manual or Installation Guide telling you how to install the software on a PC and then search for the device on the network?
