How do I find the "real" dark side on winy2k?

Question: How do I find the "real" dark side on winy2k?

I am trying to format c: on my dell pentium III desktop. I am using Windows2000Pro. I tried accessing the comand prompt through MSDOS, but it will not let me format there. I tried F8 at startup, but my only choice is to access the command prompt through safe mode, you can't format c: in safe mode. I tried changing my bios to read the cd first and then I tried putting in the Windows 2000 cd and started a new install, I never got an option to format. When I had windows98 I could format a disk and copy the system files at the same time and reboot using that disk. Then I could enter the real DOS. Windows 2000 does not give you the option to copy system files when you format a disk? I'm out of options. If anybody has a suggestion, I would be glad to try it. I bought my computer, paid for ALL my software, and yet me, the owner, is not allowed to format c:??? Thanks in advance for any help.

Preferred Solution: How do I find the "real" dark side on winy2k?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recommend anyone thinking of upgrading to SP2 to read this first

The Dark Side of Windows XP Service Pack 2

heres a snatch of the article!

The Prep Work
Before you even think about upgrading a machine to Service Pack 2, it?s a good idea to take a few minutes and properly prepare the machine. Yes, you can technically install SP2 without doing anything special to the machine ahead of time, but you are far less likely to experience problems if you plan ahead.

Spyware Removal
The very first thing that you should do is to scan your machine for spyware and remove any that you might find. The reason why this is so important is because spyware typically latches itself onto the registry and onto various system files. Installing Service Pack 2 replaces most of your machine?s system files. If a spyware module has altered aspects of your system and then you start replacing system files, there is a good chance that Windows will lose network and Internet connectivity. If this does happen to you, you can fix the problem by downloading and running a utility called WinsockXPFix.exe. You can download this utility from

Even though this utility will usually fix the problem, it is better to just scan the machine prior to installing the service pack and avoid the problem completely.

I've got an error at the moment that whenever I try and use the file dialog (e.g. save a new file, open a file, attach file to email etc), whatever application I'm using will crash.
This seems to have started ever since the Windows 10 Creator Update installed itself on my computer the other day.

I'm trying to figure out what is causing the crash, and I've noticed that in the File Dialog (that works perfectly fine in Microsoft Edge) there are now Camera and Photos options.

Here is a screenshot:

How can I disable them? They're not of much use to me being on a desktop, so I want to disable them as a first try to see if they're causing other applications to crash.

Answer:Remove "Camera" and "Photos" from left hand side of File Dialog

You can uninstall them if you wish - see Uninstall Apps in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Apps Features Tutorials

(Do have a look at the extensive Tutorial section - it contains a great deal of very practical and professional quality information)

Windows 10 Tutorial Index - Windows 10 Tutorials

Do you see Photos and Camera in traditional desktop programs' 'Save as' boxes too?

In general, though, it's not worth bothering to uninstall universal apps you don't need or use (I don't use them either).

Interestingly a change with the Creator's upgrade is that it doesn't reinstate previously uninstalled apps for hte first time.

Hi Lorien

I just joined the Forum in hopes I can find some solution to my "side by side configuration" problem in Office 2010. I saw your earlier posts and tried to no avail. Lots of time ahead this weekend hoping to find a fix - perhaps I should be redirected to a different forum?

Answer:"side by side configuration" problem in Office 2010

Hello, and welcome to the Vista Forums!

Please have a read through this older thread by me. side by side configuration

Try Lorien's advice, then mine, for the first two answers. If that does not solve the issue, keep going with my advice, and post an SFC log (sfcdetails.txt), and the sxstrace.txt.

Also, could you give us just a few more details. I assume that the error message is "The side for side configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix the issue" Can you please confirm that, and that it occurs for Microsoft Office only, as far as you are aware.

I can't seem to install any version of CCleaner and maybe other progs., too.

I'm presented with the following two errors:

1. "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail."

2. "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access them."

I've downloaded the latest version - 5.04.5151 - to the downloads folder, as well as a copy of the previous version - 5.03.5128 - but neither will install. I uninstalled the previous version, in prep for the new one, but can't re-install it, not even via the original 5.03.5128 file I had saved months ago.

I Googled for some help and found Microsoft's KB on "Windows cannot access the specified path...":
I've been through 1 - 6, to no avail
Only 5 was relevant: I "unblocked" the file, owing to Properties stating "This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer". It didn't make any difference, nor to 5.03.5128.

I Googled "...side by side configuration is incorrect..." and this is where I've come to a dead end.

I'd be really grateful for some help.

I don't want to uninstall any other progs and discover I can't re-install them, either.

Answer:CCleaner ccsetup504.exe: "...side-by-side configuration is incorrect"

Sounds like you've tried to install it and then it has completed installing. Have you check all CCleaner files are removed from your system also check in Add and Remove programs...

This is a resurection of an old unresolved Vista Post, and it also happens in Windows 7.
Original subject - Start Menu - program search issue
I use Windows Mail for my daily email tasks, and would like to be able to
open the program by using the vista search bar built into the start menu. The
problem is, when i search for "mai" it brings up Windows Mail, and I can hit
enter and load the program. However, when I search for "mail", it returns:
"No items match your search." I have it set to index both the start menu and
my programs directory, and have even tried to rebuild the index.

It seems kind of strange that Vista would recognize that when I type "mai" I
want my mail programs, but when I actually type "mail", it gets confused...
and this in turn has -me- confused.
Oh thank goodness, I've finally found someone else with the same problem.
The word I have issues with is "photo" ("phot" works great, but no results
for "photo"). Not a show-stopper, but WHY!?

I've noticed the same thing with Windows Desktop Search in Windows 7. After some experimenting I think I have the reason why, but not a fix.

It seems to em that mail and photo are probably used as "kind =" prefixes in Windows search, and even if you enter photo with out ... Read more

Dear Experts,

I have created windows image on Drive F: but delete it after some time manually due to some space prob.
But while backup shows about 40 GB only few GB space got free after deletion. When i try to again take the the backup using windows 7 backup & restore option, its still shows 35 Gb of System Image in drive F: when i brows the Manage Disc Space option but i cant find it on the same drive. (Plz see attached pic)
Plz help me to locate this and delete the same.

Answer:Cant find "System Image" of 36 GB but its shows on "Manage Disc Space"

Hello sattyaji, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It may still be showing if the system image was created as part of a Windows backup. Using the tutorial below to reset Windows Backup should clear it for you, but you will need to set up your backup again afterwards.

I have upgraded 5 machines and clean installed 3 machines.

Experienced an issue with one machine with continuous corruption problems

After the 3rd attempt I discovered that even with a Clean Install of Win 10 I get unrepairable errors - Sorry I don't have screen captures of the "exact" wording:

(Just to be clear, I have not installed ANYTHING ELSE, other than Windows 10 and the corruption is unrepairable immediately)

Heres what I did to find the issue;

Open CMD in Administrator (type cmd in Cortana search bar, RIGHT CLICK and select "Run as Administrator")

After using command:

sfc /scannow

Windows reports errors which cannot be repaired

Running the following command should repair the issue:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

BUT DOESN'T - You get this message:

"side-by-side configuration" error in Vista

I reviewed the forums and found a post that tells me how to fix this error, but I ran into a snag... The first step is to open an elevated command prompt. When I try to run that, I'm getting the same "side-by-side configuration" error that I'm trying to fix. Is there a way around running the sfc /scannow to fix this?

Based upon my experience, I do not think that the SFC will work in a side by side problem. We do have one member, Niemiro, who is very astute in that area and has given advice to another member. Hopefully that will work for you.

What? You haven't had an update since early December? Windows update should have delivered three Cumulative Updates since then. You should be on 14393.969 by now. And no... it hasn't been fixed in them either. Actually it looks like a bit more than two thirds of the screen is used. It's almost as if it's trying to fit into a 4:3 aspect ratio on a 16:9 display. Or maybe it's deliberate, leaving room for the Action Center.

There is another way to arrange two windows side by side that does fit them on two halves of screen - it's Aero Snap and that has worked correctly since before Windows 10 was launched. I use it all the time, in fact I had to search and find the options on the Taskbar that you are using - I'd forgotten they were there.

HELP PLEASE ! Came home following a power failure: We are extreme novice's at anything comp-related. Our normal operating window (Windows 10) has always opened "ready to use"..with all files/folders/pic icons clearly indicated on our homepage. Our Computer type= All-in-one Toshiba desk top two yrs old).

Since the power failure and returning appears to have reverted back to a sign-in page...offering both Customer and Guest user. We are LOCKED OUT OF OUR normal operating page as CUSTOMER and have tried every possible password we could imagine with zero-success. We are currently stuck on the "guest-user side"..and have ZERO access to all of my wife's important documents, work-biz files, folders, resume, pics and more. Guest User side works fine however little significance or needed files are available on the "guest side".. Having tried all-passwords we could to we get-ourselves OFF the guest side..and back into our Customer side ? Note we live extremely rural, 8 miles North and San Luis Obispo Ca and 14 miles east of Santa Margarita California..on a very-rural ranch....Driving this computer to some Big-City Comp-repair shop and leaving it...doesn't appear to be a favorable option at this time?

Browser (IE7) will frequently redirect to a page with a message "Sorry we couldn't find "" or "" or other various tags (though these are most common).

Web pages will often not load at all or will redirect while reading a webpage without any user action.

Occasionally it will simply say unable to load "actual web page trying to visit". Also oddly - problem seems to occur much more frequently in the morning than evening. This makes me wonder if it is a internet provider issue.

Problem has been occuring over the last 2-3 weeks.

I have followed the 5 Step process to the letter and run DSS after the first four steps. The contents of file main.txt are listed below and extra.txt is attached as a separate file.

I'm not sure what this is in Windows Update [and this seems to be greyed out itself too], but how is it possible to have no results in Google on this KB that's in Windows Update?

I also clicked on the "more information" for the Microsoft Knowledge Base, but nothing came up there either.

Answer:A "non-existent" Windows update ("KB3024777") even Google can't find

Also note that it can't be unchecked/deselected.

Edit: It seems this update removes kb3004394 and vanish without a trace (except in History).
Neither seems to be available in the uninstall list afterwards.

I think it was Webroot Spy Sweeper or The Cleaner that removed "Click to find & Fix errors" but it kept coming back.

I want to have my folders such as My Documents, Downloads, etc stored on a separate data partition to the OS, like many people do. When you go to the properties of the (original) folder and click on the Location tab, what is the difference between
using the Move button and the Find Target button? Is one recommended to achieve this over the other?
I haven't seemed to find the answer after some time searching, and didn't want to do anything irreversible.

Answer:"Move" Username/folders or "Find Target..."

It’s perfectly safe to use ‘Move’ to move the Documents folder to a different location. Navigate to the folder, then right-click it > Properties
> Location Tab > Move, select a Destination and follow the prompts. The location can be restored by choosing Restore Default.

Here is a link to a photograph of a village next to a group of mountains that almost looks "surreal".

I love surfing the web and "sightseeing" from my couch and every now and then I'll come accross some pictures that you just look at and say WOW. This picture did that for me but I am not sure if it's real or not. I have never seen mountains that look like that.

What do you guys think? Is that a real, unaltered photo? Or something created with some fancy image editing?

I even tried searching for moutain shots including different places in the world including the ALPS etc... and none of the mountains I saw look that "dramatic".

If this is a real village and mountain scene, do you have any idea where it is located because I wanna take a trip there someday if I ever hit the lottery.... LOL

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

Good morning. Here are a couple of things to try:
1. Download and install Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable Package:

Visual C++ Redistributable Packages for Visual Studio 2013

Access Denied

2. Run System file checker.

Press Windows key + X, select Command prompt (Admin) to bring up elevated Command prompt. In Command prompt type sfc/scannow and press enter.Restart the computer.
If no corrupted system files were found in the previous state, then I suggest you to try the following steps:

Open command prompt by pressing Windows key + X and selecting ?Command prompt admin?.In command prompt, type the following commands and press Enter after each command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Close the command prompt and restart the PC and check if it works.

You could also try running chkdsk /f /r c: (or whichever drive letter you want to check). You'll probably have to boot up using the "advanced options" and select "command prompt."

Hope these help.

Ok, so I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit edition.
Yesterday I opened FireFox and after a few minutes the program was not responding.
I then closed it, and when I tried to reopen it it said that FireFox was still running.
I went into Task Manager, Process, found FireFox and ended it.
Then when I tried to open it again, I received this error message.
So then I tried to Restore my computer to a previous date, but could only go back as far as that afternoon, because if I chose a different date I would get an error that it could not do it.
Next I hunted online for a solution, I found one that sounded promising.
The site said to go here and download this file. Then go here and download that file.
The link to the site is here.
When I try to follow those steps to install the files, I get this error.
At this point I am at a loss. I really don't want to have to re-install windows if at all possible.
Any and all suggestions would be helpful.

Thank you. You won't find it if you did a disk cleanup and removed the system files.
By the way, if you are running Windows 10 Insider Preview build, you will NOT find install.esd file from
$WINDOWS.~BT folder.
It is because since December 2016, Microsoft had introduced Unified Update Platform (UUP), which no longer offers the install.esd file.
Yes, that means you cannot create an iso file the old fashioned way.

Yeah so i've been searching some hours now for how to make my desktop look like this:
I don't care about the taskbar style, all i want is my desktop to look like that when i minimize everything, the clock and all! I think it's a really sexy look! I found the picture in an old thread on a forum and the user doesnt go there anymore. Im hoping someone here might have a clue!
I don't have any prior experience with this sorta stuff so im really clueless!

Thanks in advance!!

Answer:Trying to find this "theme" or "skin" or whatever to call it!

hi Lekandesanden, and welcome to sevenforums,

the clock and system information on the desktop looks like rainmeter.

i don't know which specific skin it is though...

looks like the screenshot originally came from here.

maybe you could try joining that forum and asking the OP - even though the post was nearly 2 years ago...

I have had this problem numerous times in the past where the installation proceeds then ends with the messages:

During the installation of the device.
The system cannot find the file specified
and it goes into a detection loop

HERE is the solution:

Windows 2000/XP has a bug that it cannot properly detect new hardware by *.inf files, if the RunOnce registry key is missing for the following location:

This key is often used by installers to execute post-reboot programs, but sometimes they accidentally delete this key.

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about modifying the registry. Make sure that you understand how to backup and restore the registry, in case a problem occurs. Please read the linked Microsoft Knowledge Base article prior to editing the registry.
Go to Start Run and enter "regedit."

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

With CurrentVersion Highlighted, go to the Edit menu and select New Key

Name the key RunOnce, leaving everything else about the key alone.

The RunOnce key should now exist underneath the CurrentVersion key.
Once the key exists, Windows 2000/XP stops redetecting the Hardware

Answer:"cannot find the file specified" "during the installation of the device."

Ok, I have a problem with dark videos or moves. I am not a computer noob but I am having a irritating issue. When I watch a video and there is dark parts of the video there is light lines that come from the brighter objects that move in the video, but they go away if anything brighter then the lines goes over the lines. The lines are in the shape of whatever the brighter thing is and they are very annoying to watch in any video. I have updated and reinstalled all of my codecs. I have a HP tx1499 and it has a 2.4gh amd turion 64x2 and a nvidia 6150 togo and 3gb of ram. So any ideas???

Answer:"Ghost" lines in dark parts of videos?? NEED HELP!

My edit time expired but here is a pix of the issue...this is mostly in avi files I have found out

Hi, i recently opened a post about this issue but i now have more information so i figured i would ask again this time more in depth.
I just bought a new AOC AOC E970SWN. Other than the bad viewing angles i love the monitor, it is my first monitor that i have that isn't a CRT, i waited way too long to upgrade. My problem is that when certain colors are displayed on screen it starts to "flicker" horizontally. It doesn't do it on black. [maybe it does but i just can't notice] and it does not do it on any light colors either, mainly dull/darkish colors, especially grey. It makes watching videos almost impossible because it looks horrible. Speaking of videos that is when it is at it's worst. most of the time when it's happening i pause the video but the flickering still continues even when paused. On VLC i noticed disabling use hardware YUV-RGB conversions slightly cut down the amount of flickering on videos played using vlc but only because i think it darkened the image considerably. -other information needed-
I connect using VGA-only possible option-
Windows XP
GT 430 GPU [possible settings causing it?]
I can't test the monitor on another computer unfortunately.
I hope someone has an idea as currently it's impossible to watch any videos on this monitor and that was my main use for my computer.

Answer:LED Monitor "flickering" during dark/dull colors.

I have basic knowledge of the command terminal, in that I only know how to navigate through directories. Currently I am trying to execute the following:

java ?jar MRTBatch.jar ?d input_directory ?p parameter_directory\input_parameter_file ?o parameter_file_directory

I have already navigated to the correct directory to make use of the MRTBatch.jar tool, however the problem arises with my user inputs, which are of the form "C:\Users\My Name\Rest of path". I keep getting the error:

ERROR: Could not find directory "C:\Users\My Name".

When navigating directories earlier I always had to go find the file I wanted, copy its path location, paste it into the command terminal, and then erase the "C:\" portion (so it became cd\Users\My Name\Rest of path) for it to work. So when I got this error I have tried multiple edits for it to recognize the paths. Could it be as simple as switching the direction of the slashes? I would have thought the complete path name would always be best. Is it because I'm already burrowed down so far that it cant seem to recognize any file further back?

Here are the directions I am following, pg 40 titles "Automated Batch Processing":
My goal is to mosaic a bunch of satellite imagery using the MODIS Reprojection Tool (MRT).

Thank you for the help!

Answer:Command Prompt Error: "Cannot find directory "C:\Users\..."

Web site URLs use the forward slash / while path statements in the OS use the backslash \.

Your problem just may be that it needs to start from the root of the drive or C:\. If it starts at the standard Command Prompt it will already be looking below/inside C:\Users\your name\.

My laptop is maybe 2 years old, its a Presario C300 widescreen.

A dark spot appeared on the bottom right of the screen about the cursor wide. Its not a dead pixel and I don't think its burn in. It is way to dark. Pixels can be seen though it, but its under the surface. I am at a loss as to what to even call it to start to find a solution.

It almost looks to me as if there was dirt under the screen.

lcd fluid is cracked and leaking. you'll have to replace the lcd. You can get a kit or get it repaired. I suggest the latter.

I notice that Chrome icon pinned to taskbar has inconsistent behavior between my Windows 10 Pro installs. (My taskbar is configured for "Taskbar buttons: Never combine", but it makes no difference)

1. On one machine clicking on pinned Chrome icon expands that pinned icon "in place", i.e. the pinned icon expands and becomes a wide taskbar entry for Chrome window. This is the normal behavior for Windows 10.

2. On another machine clicking on pinned Chrome icon creates a new taskbar entry for the new Chrome window. The new expanded entry appears in the taskbar to the right of the pinned icons, while the original pinned Chrome icon remains unchanged. This behavior is similar to that of ordinary Windows 7 Quick Launch bar.

So far only Chrome behaved in this inconsistent fashion. Other pinned icons consistently behave in accordance with the first scenario.

So, would could possibly be the reason for a pinned Chrome icon to follow the latter behavior?

Hi Everyone !!

we have developed a portal for the suppliers where in we have confugured the sites to be open in client higer version of IE with the below code.

             <add name="X-UA-Compatible" value="IE=Edge"/>
        <add name="X-Frame-Options" value="DENY"/>

The issue is that when we launch our portal in IE. THE IE turns Enterprise Mode on by doing so it will try to Emulate IE in version 8 which is not really required as my clients are having latest version of IE , why Enterprise mode on will target to lower
versions ..

Kindly let me know the fix on this , if any questions post it ,let me revert back.

My start menu is working fine, but I have an issue where at times I open it and the entire left side (everything that's not a tile) is blank, and the entire start menu background has changed from it's dark theme to crystal clear. I close it, reopen it, and everything is back to normal.
Also, at times, while the start menu is OPEN the list on the left will vanish and the background will turn crystal clear again.
I have reported this issue to Microsoft, and have also reported exactly how to duplicate it so they can get it fixed in an upcoming build.
What happens is this:
1. I have my desktop background set up for a slide show.
2. Every time the background changes, it messes up the start menu. Start menu works fine between changes.
Perhaps they'll get that fixed soon, but if you open up your start menu and see parts of it missing, just close it and re-open it.

Today I start to seeing this when the pointer is in the top left side... is it normal?

It didn't happen before, I restart my computer, but it didn't fix anything

Answer:"Start" rectangle contour on left side bar, is it normal?

Hello Mildor, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Yes, that's normal. This is the app switcher that allows you to switch between opened apps in Windows 8/8.1.
Switcher - Open in Windows 8
You would just need to close an app to not have it display in app switcher anymore.

Apps - Close in Windows 8
If you like, you can also turn off the switcher left hot corner to stop app switcher from opening when you have the pointer at the top left corner.

Switcher - Enable or Disable Top Left Corner in Windows 8

Hope this helps,

In my data partition I use a particular set of rules in naming folders, i.e. 0 is the prefix for any folder that gets direct downloads, 1 is the prefix for any folder that gets software, etc

I would like to put a "sticky" (for lack of a better word for this) on the left hand side of the folder so that I can quickly access these rules any time I open up the F:data drive without having to open up a file to remind me of them. Is there some way to do this?

Answer:Putting a "sticky" on the left hand side of a folder

as far as text goes, I don't think so, but here's what I do. (In XP) right click on the folder and then go to Customize and click change icon and it should by default load the list from system32\shell32.dll which are like 100 really nice 32x32 icons. Your downloaded files folder could by the 2nd row, 4th in one where it's a globe with a ring around it, sort of implying the internet. Then every time you see that folder, it would have that custom icon and you'd be able to tell what's inside it a lot better than remembering numbers. Technically you can draw your own 32x32 icon and save it somewhere then click browse and browse to your custom saved one. Then you can put unique graphics or colors or text or whatever you want on it to tag that folder. Btw the best free icon creator/editor is Clic

On my desktop, my computer repair business folder has a custom icon of one of the temples from the original age of empires :P totally easy to find now lol.

We have an end user who has opened a ticket because of a pop-up dialogue box that has occurred several times on her machine (usually when the machine is idle, she says). The error message reads as follows:

"Main client-side service has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Then it goes through the whole "Please tell Microsoft about this problem" spiel and gives her the option of sending or not sending the error report to Microsoft.

I've checked through her machine's event logs and have found nothing pertaining to this kind of message. I've also done a Microsoft support, Yahoo, and Google search on the error message and have found nothing. The error doesn't specify what application or program the error is in and we're stumped. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what this is, or has anyone seen this before?

Hi -

Hoping you can help me. I need to set up an Outlook 2007 rule for marking all incoming mail as read, but it must reside on the exchange server.

The issue is that we need to ensure that all files that are incoming to this particular mailbox are marked as read to prevent them from repeatedly ftp'ing a file to an application server. This is an unmanned mailbox. I've read several forums that say the "Mark as Read" rule can only be set up client side.

Anyone know if that is correct? Or... have any suggestions?

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

Answer:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?

Answer:Clicking on "App" and nothing happens apart from the tile going dark

Don't know why this is happening to you but it does seem to be a problem that crops up on these forums many times. The usual fix is to perform a repair install with an in-place upgrade.

How do I remove this?

Every time I open any 'metro app' this window pops up and doesn't exit until I close all metro apps. As you can see, it blocks a lot of things making almost any app unusable. Plus it's annoying. How do I turn it off?

The kicker is, when I try and swipe in from the side nothing happens... I don't know who goes around swiping with mice, but there you go, apparently it's a feature.

Answer:How to remove "swipe in from the side" pop up window

Hello, this has become a severe problem for me. As a gamer, it is hard for me to play games on Windows 8. Everytime I'm in a game and I move the mouse to the far left of the screen and click, it tabs over to the desktop.

Please help, I've tried searching the internet to no avail!

Answer:Clicking side of screen "ALT+TABS" ????

You mean, while playing a game in the Metro side? I never noticed that. Ok I checked it out, it only happens when you slide up toward the top left corner. Can you move your HUD up there? The only way to avoid that happening is to not move your cursor up there.

I think if you install a start menu program like Start 8 you might be able to disable some of those default "Hot Corners" - I'll see if I can find out if there is a way. There may be something in the Tutorials section, you'll just have to look.

Hi there

I thought I could understand a reasonable amount of I.T stuff -- but reading up on some of the FAQS about Windows 8.1 Enterprise version there's a lot of mention of "Side Loaded" apps.

What on earth does this mean -- to me it seems that these applications aren't loaded fully and only work in "Half-assed mode" only but I'm sure Ms doesn't mean that so could someone enlighten me on what this actually means in plain English.

I've read posts and reviews on the Netbooks featuring the Intel Atom. I like the concept; however I'm curious if anyone has any real world experience with how common programs perform on an XP/Atom-based platform.

Intel's web site isn't much help in comparing the Atom's performance to its other mobile chips, so I'm asking for others' experience and feedback.

Right now I have an aging notebook running a Celeron M 1.6, XP Pro with 1GB of DDR2 4200. While not spectaular, it gives sufficient performance running Word 2003, Streets & Trips navigation (GPS attached) and Paint Shop Pro 11.
I would also like to be able to use a USB TV Tuner (very helpful during hurricane season), which the manufacturer states a minimum of a 1.6 Pentium M processor is required for.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The search box in Windows Exploer is a real pain the ass. I regularly need to find files in a large directory with a lot of sub directories, with thousands of files.

The annoying thing is the way that as soon as I start typing it decides to start searching - but with so many files this just jams things up and stops me typing. I have to wait for it to sort itself out before it will let me type any more and this is becoming extemely tedious.

It's getting to the point where I have to type the search into notepad then cut and paste it into WinEx, which is clearly a ridiculous state of affairs.

How do I switch this highly annoying feature the hell off?

Hello - back with a new XP system and a smorgasbord of new worries. In a way I'm almost tempted to stick with the Windows 98SE exclusively for 'Net browsing and leave this one as "pristine" as possible, but, alas - the lure of speed cannot be resisted...

Anyhow, I just updated and ran Spybot, and the only item that came up is:

"Windows Security Center.AntivirusDisableNotify - 1 entry"

I was only a couple days from the end of the free 90-day NAV trial period included with the new system, so I bought the Norton renewal earlier today, which may have something to do with this. I'm reluctant to have Spybot delete it for fear of disabling something legitimate that NAV needs? But then I've never had that particular item come up in S&D either.

Should I do the fix or leave it be?

E-mail titled "Snow White And The Seven Dwarves -- The Real Story" or similar wording contains a worm called W32Hybris-B which can, apparently, do various nasty things to your computer & can send itself to others via E-mail.

I received a copy of it today (24th) but my Anti-Virus program caught & quarantined the attachment.

However -- should I send a "Hijack This" listing before I send any E-mails so it can be looked at & be sure its gone?

I have identified a serious issue under MSIE 6 and MSIE7 with RealPlayer 11. If a user has RealPlayer 11 installed and has set the "Enable Web Downloading & Recording" button during install (default option), our online multimedia courseware will freeze during playback of 2nd or 3rd multimedia file. Note that this happens when the user is playing multimedia under Windows Media Player NOT REAL PLAYER. So, Real Player is not even being instantiated.

I would like to find out how to disable the "download this video" popup in IE. I know I can just not check the Enable Web Downloading & Recording button, but I have 1.3 million users of my software and cannot have each one disable this.

I am not concerned about the downloading of videos, just the freezing of the browser when that popup displays. It does not happen when Real Player is selected as the media player, and it does not happen in Firefox because it uses Real Player.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Guys!

Before I found that hidden "real.exe" file clicking on a fixed drive letter in "My Computer" explorer page did start that an application called "1" and the linked process was "rea.exe" in the Windows taskmanager.
Now after removing it, a left-click on any HDD drive will open the "Open with - Choose the program you want to use open this file: File: c:\" - window, the checkbox for "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is disabled. I got a pop-up that says the following in a window looking like a Windows system alert:

"Critical Error!
Attention Rose! Some dangerous viruses detected in your system. Microsoft Windows XP files corrupted. This may lead to the destruction of important files in C:\WINDOWS. Download protection software now!
Click okay to download antispyware. (Recommended)"

There is a "Yes" and a "No" button.

I could not close the pop-up window, so I was forced to choose. I didn't trust that the message was really a system alert, so I clicked the No button, thinking this was malicious. It went away, and I immediately opened AVG and ran a whole computer scan. It came up with a handful of warnings of tracking cookie infections, but that's all.

Then a few minutes later, the alert returned. Now I'm afraid to click yes or no, and everything in that browser is disabled until I do.

Please advise ASAP. I don't know if I already got an infection, or if clicking on the alert will give me an infection. Or is there any chance that the pop-up is a genuine WIN message? I don't think it would be, since I already have virus protection and it doesn't tell what antispyware it is suggested to download. Looks too hoakey, ...

Okay....Real player downloads worked perfectly for a long time but now I get a message EVERY TIME saying "Download incomplete. Refresh the page and try again." I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling Real Player but to no avail. any help appreciated....if you know another program which does the job easily and automatically like RP, I'm all ears. For my work, I really, really need to be able to download videos all the time!

So I have never used RP before. I downloaded it and had the same result; I could not download any videos. I was getting the same error.

I noticed that all the videos I was trying to download were YouTube videos. I know that YouTube does not allow their content to be legally downloaded, so this may be the reason why it is failing.

I did a search for alternatives to RP and found this on CNET:

I cannot attest for any of these programs as I have never used any of them.

I have a fairly old, slow computer (albeit souped up a bit with a 1 TB Barracuda SSHD): a Toshiba Satellite C55-C5241, 8GB RAM, i5-5500u, and am running Windows 10 Home x64, everything current/updated. I use Chrome and/or Vivaldi as my browser, if that makes a difference.

I've been using Avast free for about a year and while I like the interface, I keep getting handle leaks and other problems that are really slowing me down, especially on the internet (and I've repeatedly totally uninstalled and reinstalled). It might be some incompatibility with something on my system, although I've seen in a lot of the most recent AV rankings that Avast is no longer considered lightweight compared to Avira, etc. In any event, I'm fed up with troubleshooting and just want to ditch it.

My main priority is, of course, good real-time protection, but also something as lightweight as possible (especially when on the internet). I'm also totally broke (unemployed) and not looking for much beyond standard web and file protection, preferably with heuristic/behavioral analysis--Windows firewall is fine, I use web mail so don't need spam filtering, etc.

But again, the main thing is that it be as light on resources as possible. Top contenders:
Avira (I know the pop-ups are pretty irritating, but if it is significantly lighter, I can definitely deal); a little concerned because I thought I read somewhere that it doesn't have any sort of behavior shield/heuristics... Read more

Webroot should not be considered as a serious option. It has gone downhill a lot and has had very unpromising results lately.

After a cold boot I have LOTS of processes loaded, including some, I suspect, for QuickTime and SonyVaioAgent (since their icons are in my systray even though I literally NEVER use the programs.)

Can someone tell me where to go on my PC to remove non-essential files from the list of those which load at bootup?

Answer:Not a "real problem" but how do I keep programs from loading on boot?

>> Can someone tell me where to go on my PC to remove non-essential files from the list of those which load at bootup? ethveg <<

Go Start, then to Run and type "msconfig" (without the quotes) in the space to the right of run and hit enter. Then click on the Startup tab. Uncheck the ones that you do not want.

Very Important Note: While it can be tempting to "disable" many items in there; Use caution, especially when disabling "unknown" processes; as many of these are considered necessary in order for Windows and certain programs to run properly.

Also check out these sites to discover more about this subject:
Start-up applications do you really need all of them?

Many of these programs and processes in the Startup are "abbreviated." Therefore try these two sites Task List or Sysinfo as well; in order to get more info on what?s actually running.

The freeware program called Startup Control Panel could be useful as well; in order to very easily disable programs that are set to run automatically at start-up.

Good Luck

I use a certain webservice for my websaite, and use their forums to ask about problems and see what new goodies I can try on my site. Recently, two people posted claiming that BeSeen hijacked their browser.

Now, I've had BeSeen on my computer once or twice over the years, but it was a tracking cookie. It was nothing major, and I got rid of it. But I've never heard of BeSeen as a browser hijack. I've tried searching Symantec, Pandascan, here (but of course!), Castlecops, Computer Associates, lists on Spyware Blaster, etc. I can find absolutely nothing.

The webservice uses Google ads, by the way. As far as I know, Google ads usually don't do this. And my own site didn't have this problem.

So, is this BeSeen nonsense a new browser hijack that few have seen (and if so, are there any other good, up-to-date lists I can check?), or are these people trying to pull something? They are new posters, by the way.

This is going to be a long description of the problem. Please bear with me. This is a truly mission-critical business machine, and the description will be quite coherent and relevant. I’m a senior IT manager here.

Running XP Pro SP3 32-bit, on a carefully maintained machine. Using an HP LaserJet 1022 printer (not a lot of printing needs on this machine, until recently).

Here's the series of events I've experienced:

Printer has been working fine on the machine for a year now.

I recently opened a PDF attachment with a few graphics (business presentation). The file was only half a meg. But it caused the following error when I went to print it to the 1022:

"Spooler subsystem app has encountered an error"

After that, the file kept printing every minute or so -- at least the first six of the twelve pages -- and nothing else would print on any printer. I cleared the printer queue and yet it still kept printing the first six pages every minute or so.

Rebooting resulted in an even worse error message, the ever-dreaded “Windows has encountered a serious error” (or something to that effect). And the file printed again! And no other printers would show up at all (well, they would briefly, but not print, and then they’d all disappear).

Considerable reading and trouble-shooting led to my doing an XP System Restore. That fixed it when nothing else would, but I didn't yet know the cause of the problem -- until I tried t... Read more

I've done a lot of reading and I see the controversy around registry cleaners. Certainly, it seems obvious that they shouldn't be used frivolously and are probably mostly hype in terms of performance increases and are generally quite risky.

However, I have a genuine issue that needs to be fixed, and an advisor who is a senior engineer suggested I use a registry cleaner.

I know enough to first do various levels of backup (including a system image) and to limit deletions to items I manually approve (or "perhaps" run it at auto at the lowest detection level).

Now, my decision is simply which registry cleaner to use. Above all else, I'm after "reliable" and after that the obvious features like interface etc.

My advisor suggested Registry Mechanic since he's been familiar with it for years. But after I showed him this review recommending "Advanced System Optimizer" by Systweak at TopTenReviews he did some searching on his own of other reviews (I have no idea which) and agreed that it was a better choice and looked like it was a good utility.

For me, though, finding more reviews of registry cleaners seems almost impossible, partly because the search engines are loaded with tons of "false" reviews that are just marketing pages with affiliate links to buy whatever they want to sell, and for the most part they?re selling this stuff to novices who expect more speed. (The advanced techs here all know what I mean.)
