Shutdown problems / MSConfig type thing in W2K?

Question: Shutdown problems / MSConfig type thing in W2K?

My W2K laptop hangs on shutdown after going through what must be most of the shutdown process. I've eliminated everything that shows in the Startup folder as being the app that is hanging, and I've cleared the task list before shutdown with the same result. Is there any way to prevent selected items from loading on startup (similar to MSCONFIG) without editing the registry? (WKWKST is asking the same question over here, darn I miss "Track this thread"!!) Or is there another way to determine the culprit application?

Preferred Solution: Shutdown problems / MSConfig type thing in W2K?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Shutdown problems / MSConfig type thing in W2K?

But you have to use a third party program called 'Startup Cop' for Win2K. It's not the greatest program (ugly), but it does the job. Worked for me.

I currently am having some malware issues, but this is a different issue.

After doing msconfig in run, i looked at the services section and half of the things are stopped and half running. As a lot say microsoft corporation i was wondering if they should be stopped or not.

So just need to know if this is an issue or normal really. Basically should they all be on if not i guess its either nothing or something to do with the malware and those guys will help me.

Answer:So i was looking at that msconfig thing

Alright...So my friend got one of those awesome links in AIM sent to her by someone and clicked on it.

She ran the virus scan and nothing came up...Just lots and lots of adware and spyware stuff...and Malware, whatever that is...This is what she was saying:

"it seems like a microsoft internet explorer hijacker now... lots and lots of pop-ups (but only from internet explorer, NOT from Firefox which is the browser i use), and the pop-up blockers don't seem to work either, atleast not the ones i've tried"
"it's not a virus... well atleast it doesn't come up as a virus. it comes up listed as "malware". it comes up on ad-aware and mal-ware, but not on virus scans"
"and it always says it's deleted on ad-aware and malware, but the same one keeps coming back even though the program deletes it every time"

She keeps running adware, spybot, etc. to get rid of it, doesn't work. I had her back up her computer (no clue if that would help anyways) and it didn't work. We can't figure out what to do, and it still keeps sending the link to the people on her list.

Any ideas?

Answer:AIM virus type thing...

Hi, Have her post a Hijackthis log in the Security forum here at TSG. It would be best if the friend could post the log directly from that computer.

Send her the link to your thread here, have her do this:

dvk01 said:

Getting Hijackthis and installing it correctly

go to here and download 'Hijack This!' double click on the file and it will install to C:\program files\hijackthis and create an entry in the start menu and an optional shortcut on desktop.
Click on the entry in start menu or on the desktop to run HijackThisClick to expand...
First open a reply here in your thread to have it ready.
Run Hijackthis.exe, and
Select the "Scan and save a log" button...

When it is done scanning> the Save box will become available, save the log as hijackthis.txt which will open with Notepad. Hit the EDIT> Select All then the EDIT>Copy button at the top of your log, Go back to TSG, and click once in the blank reply space, then go to the top of your browser window and select EDIT>Paste, then submit the post.
Please do NOT use HJT yourself to remove anything, most of what it shows is good and needed by the system.

Also i can get on the internet, but at least half of every site doesn't appear correct if it appears at all. All i can get from Google is the Google icon. i think it may be a problem with the char list, or maybe something to do with an edited font. i don't know what i can do to fix this. Please help. One day, I noticed that when I pushed Ctrl + Alt + Del, two new programs that I had never seen apeared. They are called ikernel (or perhaps Lkernel?) and Knlwrap. I looked these up on the internet and found out I had the Magistr virus, which is weird because my anti-virus program didn't detect it. (I use mcaffe; It's not what I would have chosen but it was my parents decision) I also looked up some more information about the virus, and I don't seem to be suffering from the other syptoms (desktop icons flying around, lol, that would be entertaining) I tried using some dos fixes on the internet, but the virus programs keep poping up, and when they do, my other programs act funny (Duh).

(Note: I already deleted the knlwrap.exe and lkernel.exe files, so they're not listed)

Hello, good people. Not sure if this is the right forum. Sorry.

For a while I have been searching for a program that would let me set up my PC to start up at a certain time, and automatically play an audio file from a pool of my choosing.

My pc is in my room, and I have always wanted to wake up to music. I could do this on my phone, but its speaker leaves much to be desired.

Answer:Alarm clock type thing

Hello knickers

I haven't tried this myself, but I think it should work. Follow the first link to automate wake up of your PC from sleep. Download the software in the second link & configure it to play music after wake up. Tell me how it goes.

Sounds to me that what you're looking for is a NAS solution. If you want, go with the do-it-yourself method: get hold of an old machine, install large hard drives, throw WHS/Linux/FreeBSD/whatever, and start serving.

On downloading several small files today and saving them to the default directory, the "Save As File Type" box contained, in addition to the correct file extension, a string (obviously the title of an adult movie) with underscores for spaces and a curly bracket thrown in for good measure. I've never had the movie or anything similar on the computer or even seen the title before (honest, Guv!).

The downloaded file scanned OK with with Avira Premium and Spybot, as does this machine, and appeared to be perfectly normal in every other respect but this event worries me. Has anyone come across something like this and is it down to malware?

Answer:Save As File Type - Odd Thing Happening!

Hi,

Its not necessarily malware - can you post a screen capture image showing the problem? What type of files were you downloading, and from what type of site?

I have Word 2003 and I have a symbol appearing throughout my documents and coming uo when I start a new page as well. I thought it might have been a smart tag (not that I know what that is) but I followed the procedure for getting rid of smart tags and that hasn't worked.

This is two straight upright parallel lines with a small solid semi circle at the top of the left line.

What it is and how do I get rid of them all over my page in between text.

1) My 2 year old ACER Aspire 5 keyboard just stop working in a couple of capacities. First, the numbers on the 10 key wouldn't type at all. Checked Num Lock, fine, then tried to type numbers at top of keyboard, well, some typed the right number but most didn't or typed more than one number.

2) Ran Webroot Anti-spyware and Anti-Virus, clean. Then I shook my computer to see if any crumbs or foreign materials were throwing something off, clean. Took out battery, nada.

3) Restored computer to the day before any problems. Changed nothing. Pressed every key to see if something was stuck or key broken. None.

4) The Delete, Backspace, Enter and Space Bar do NOT work at all. So basically, the entire keyboard is not working due to something. If I type any one key, some of them type what I wanted but continue to type the letter or number until I log out of my Google Engine.

5) I have always had issues with the keyboard. I will be typing along and the cursor will randomly go back to previous sentences and start typing what I am currently typing. It is so annoying. Why is it hopping all over the place?

6) A computer major friend who teaches computer classes said to write to Google and maybe I would find others with similar problems. I found several "sticky keys" problems but none on point with none of the keys working or working properly. He suggested perhaps a Trojan Horse virus but my sweeps come up clean...

7) Can anyone help me???

Thank you,

Answer:Laptop keys stopped working and some type the wrong thing...

It could be a virus. But It also could just be your keyboard is bad. You may need to take it to your local repair shop if it. Is a laptop and have them check the keyboard out for you. I really do not think it is a virus.

Also, my shutdown/startup take a ridiculously long time, like 2 min/1.5 min. All the while I can see my cable modem's data light blinking and I have heard that is some network thing. I am not on a newtork and am wondering if there is anything I can do about this slowness. Here is my startup list:

Sometime last week I was infected by the blaster worm virus. Went throught the RPC shutdown issues and applied patch. Shutdown issues resolved. Everything is back to normal except my task manager and msconfig shuts down before I can even click on a tab. After reading through many posts on the issue I notice most were made after the worm was discovered. Link between the two? I have no clue, but would love some help on the issue. None of the forums I read seemed to match my problem. Can't find any relation between hijack file and solutions in forums. Maybe i'll just stay in safe mode forever

hi,  my daughter's edge type 0217 has very reproduceable hardware problem. It occurred the first time when she just handed over the runnin laptop. you accept it holding it on a one of its corners, en ooops, it shuts down. Now I discovered that there is a specific spot on its bottom that has this sudden shutdown effect. Just push there with one finger, absolutely not hard, and the PC shutsdown as if the battery were taken out, or a hardware reset button were pushed. She tells me il also occors when it is flat on a table, and the table shocks or vibrates.  Anything I can do against that ? Jan

Answer:hardware problem: sudden shutdown of Thinkpad ege type 0217, when pushed on the bottom

Is it a proper shutdown (all tasks shut down, windows says it's powering off) or just loss of power, ie laptop goes black right away. Edit: Your posts seem to indicate the latter. If it is so, you should take it to a service center/warranty repairs.

My daughter has a Packard Bell running Win XP and has the following prblems :(1) When trying to run MSCONFIG (from the run option) get an error message which says "Windows cannot find MSCONFIG"(2) When trying to access Help and Support from the Start Menu get an error message which says "Windows cannot find helpctr.exe"I have a sneaking suspicion that the two are in some way connected with a recent install of Easyclean - this has now been uninstalled.Reading through various postings came across one which said should try and do a reinstall of XP unfortunately XP was preinstalled and do not have a backup CD. So do not know how to do this. Also downloaded fixwinhelpxp but that didnt solve the problem.Any help would be appreciated.TIA

Answer:Msconfig problems With XP Home

If you didn't get a CD, then Windows probably resides on the computer somewhere (in case you wanted to install software from it). However, the installation isn't easy to start. However, there is a better approach.Click Start, Run and typeSFC /scannowand press enter. This should scan the Windows setup for missing and corrupted files. However, any updates from Windows Update may be lost, so be sure to click here to reinstall them. Please note that a full backup is advisory before completing this (just in case) and unless you have a firewall, your computer may be vulnerable to the Sasser virus after running SFC.No personal files will be affected, or files added to your computer since Windows was installed. Have installation discs for other programs handy, just in case. All other precautions (ie Power failure, alien abduction, etc) apply.

A lot of the time that means there is driver trying to load for a device n that is no longer present on the system.

Are there any yellow or red call outs in device manager?

What is shown as unticked in msconfig on the Start up and Services tab?

A couple of days ago I ran the above and checked on what programs were loading at startup. Since then the system configuration utility has been coming up saying it is in selective or diagnostic mode. I am 100 per cent certain that I am in normal mode and a spybot message comes up about items being denied changes when I close an alert box, there is no other option. How do i check what is wrong and correct my mistakes.

Answer:problems with msconfig at startup

When the box comes up do not click ok or off. You should see a box bottom left put tick in box then click ok

Answer:HKLM:Run MSConfig C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto?

1) Open msconfig and put a tick in "Normal Startup". Then reboot.
2) DO NOT use msconfig to make changes to startup items. Always use a dedicated app (such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Manager) to manage startup items or services.msc to change system services. Msconfig is a diagnostic utility only.

I have had this problem for about a week now, ever since I returned after a week of vacation. For that week, the computer was off. Upon return, my dad had broken the router and I have to change my ip configuration from obtain automatically to giving it a specific one myself to fix the problem and return the router to its former operating state. I then returned the setting to its original form. The issue is now, I am the only one connected to my network, my resource monitor shows that only 2 things are using bandwidth of any relevance and those are the two things that I use on a regular basis, Teamspeak 3 and Counter Strike Global Offensive. When I first played CSGO after fixing the router, it was adequate alone, though I did notice that instead of a usual ping of 50ms it was closer to 80ms. Then, I joined teamspeak as I usually do and I was still fine, but the moment that I spoke a single word or even breathed into my microphone, my ping jumped to 1100ms and stayed there until I stopped using my microphone. After trying anything I could myself to get it working again (A full list of things that I have tried is provided below) I tried my ISP and was told by them that the router's connection to them is very strong, and that they see no issue with other computers. I tried the exact same setup on my laptop, and sure enough, it worked fine. The problem is, if I do more than one thing, so CSGO and try to use Skype, Teamspeak or ingame voice, I spike to 1100ms on all of them.

As the title says, I am having trouble with two problems, the msconfig utility and trying to get my network to recognize my external network drive.

Msconfig- I tried a diagnostic setup (long story) and now I want all my old services (such as the print service among other things) both microsoft and non microsoft....to work again.

I selected normal setup instead of diagnostic setup, and made sure all services, microsoft included, have a check in each box.

When I click Ok to leave, it asks me to exit without restart or restart. I click restart.

However, once the computer is restarted, nothing has changed. Please help me to put it back to how it was before.

-------------------------------------------

Also, I have recently installed a 160GB network drive that is attached via usb to my computer.

My computer recognizes the drive and I constantly put files onto it and pull files off of it. This is NOT a hardware problem.

The problem is that even when I configure this drive to be shared on the network and select the option to let other users change my files, I still can't see the drive from my other computers.

My network works fine as far as I can tell, I can use the internet and other computers can acess my computer just find. Also, I have had this problem since BEFORE I messed with my msconfig utility....

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Answer:Two problems, 1: msconfig 2: recognizing drive with xp

Hi Alcorr, in msconfig, go to startup tab and check all the boxes and hit apply and restart. Hopefully should get all your application back at startup. http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
As for the network HDD try mapping it manually from the other computer click start run and type \\ipaddress\drivename

So, l came here for help and got it, thanks to all of you guys. The name of the culprit file in my case was "SMINEVKUHR.EXE". After searching for this file (start menu) and deleting it, l could run task manager and msconfig. Then in mscofig, on the "startup" list, there it was, in big old capital letters, not once but twice. So l had to do this a couple of times before l could run either TM or config with no problems directly after a restart. l'm sure to all of you smart guys l'm doing it all wrong, and have probably missed something very important, but what the heck. if l can help another moron like myself, then yay. BTW l found the "sminevkuhr.exe" "b.s." by using the "process explorer" download that someone on another thread recommended. this is just like the task manager, how bout that. 0_o
Thank again all yous guys, alot.

#1 -At one time you gave me a site that gave all the definitions for everything in msconfig.
Could you please advise me of this site.

Reason. My computer is only 6 months old and now it is slowing down. In the past, on an older computer I had, there was things in MSCONFIG that did not need to be there. When I removed the unwanted ones things ran better. I would like to know what is running and be able to manage them better. But of course I do not want to just delete things with out knowing what they are, or for that matter leave thing there that don't need to be there.

#2 -I have recently purchased a wireless D-Link Router for my two computers. Now it would seem that we are having problems connecting to the net and have to reboot all the time.

The main computer is direct cable. The second one is wireless. They are linked directly to the net on there own. I have been trying to link the two together via network place but I can not seem to link them to share files and pictures.

Now is it the router that is causing the bad connection to the net or do I have it set up wrong.

Answer:Two Problems MSCONFIG and wireless router

I would post the wireless problem in the Networking forum.

For the msconfig questions ...

In addition to general Google searches for obscure items, I use these sites frequently:

I recently allowed my ex to "fix" somethings on my computer and well, things have not been the same. The biggest annoyance has been a dell folder that opens upon startup and a sonic blast instalation prompt that loads every time I turn on my computer. The dell folder is easily closed by hitting the X, but the sonic installer is closed only by using control alt delete. I have the original sonic disks and tried reinstalling the program, even though I dont use it, but I still get the instalation popup upon startup. I am hesitent to remove the program because I ready in another forum that removing sonic (which came with my computer) can mess with the sound properties. In order to try and fix the dell folder problem I tried using MSCONFIG but was denied access because I was not an "administrator"...I am the only person affiliated with this computer and always have been, so I thought I was the administrator? Please Help!
Some Basics:
Windows XP

Here's a secret: Right click on the little Windows flag in the lower left, and you see a menu with many commands, control panel, run [dialog box] and more. Click run and type 'msconfig' as many people know, there are three types of startups. Under another one of the tabs there is a option called 'alternative shell'. So mistakenly while diagnosing or troubleshooting my HP Laptop, I selected that; I ended up at command prompt and did not know what to do. Now I cannot get out of the win/system32> command prompt at all. Some one told me how to get to advanced startup, but that would basically mean going through Reset process, which takes hours. What should I do now?

Answer:Msconfig and command prompt, problems

Welcome to TenForums @mikewarren1

The Alternative shell is available on msconfig's Boot tab, and is greyed out unless you select Safe Boot. Basically you have selected 'Safe Boot to Command Prompt'.

Thankfully you can launch Msconfig from the command prompt, just type MSCONFIG and hit Enter. Now you can untick 'Safe Boot' and you should be back to normal.

Well after spending days on blackviper and tweak.com etc.... I came to a pretty good understanding on windows services that run on my computer.
There are a lot of windows services that I will never use or don't need so some of them I stopped in msconfig.
I was aware that stopping some of the services might slightly change things that I am unaware of (until I come across it).
And there are a couple things that are going on now, which I'm not sure which service I stopped is causing it.

The first is under task manager, (see pics below) Under the network tab it created a second local area connection (local area connection 2).
The other is under the users tab, my default profile doesn't show up any more.
The third is any social website that I am a member of and has a videochat place it will not load, I am able to go to the sites and sign in and see my home page but when I click videochat it just sits there loading forever until it says done and nothing comes up except a blank white page. This is the same on three other social videochat sites I go on. There were all working and loading just fine before I made the windows service tweaks.

That's all I have come across so far but I'm sure I'll discover other things along the way. I could always just set all the services back to default but I'd like to find out what causes what and why instead.

Is there anyway to paste, copy, or save the entire list of services for msconfig? I've noticed there's n... Read more

Answer:msconfig tweaked causing certain problems

As you have learned not all can be disabled in MSconfig.

Try this,

Turn the unit off
Restart it & start tapping F8
You should get a screen offering startup options
[Might take a few tries]
Try Last known good configuration & see if that puts it back like it was before you made the changes.

If that doesn't work do a System Restore to a date before you made the changes.

I had the winantivirus bug on my computer about a month ago, and thought that I had the system cleaned. My problems may still be related to this. Upon startup I get two errors one is a rundll error which says the file drvduj.dll cannot be read. The other is an error with mcsysmon.exe. Though these errors don't seem to cause any computer function problems, the reason I am posting is because I am unable to make any modifications to startup tasks with the msconfig utility. I receive the following error message when attempting to change any startup task: "An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. Ok first of all, i try to open 'msconfig' the normal way under 'run...', but now it doesnt open any more when i try to get to it. I want to change some of my startup options but now nothing happens when i try to get to that window.

A semi-similar problem happens when i try to bring up task manager with 'control-alt-delete' except that the window flashes on the screen for a split second, then disappears. A task manager icon appears on the bottom right tray but disappears when i mouse over it. I made a new shortcut to task manager that i pinned to my start menu which brings up the task manager window. This works and the window does not go away; it stays on the screen normally and everything is a-ok. now i'm wondering how i can get the normal 'control-alt-delete' method to work again, or if there is a way i can make 'control-alt-delete' a shortcut to the new task manager shortcut that works.

So theres two problems i have here that may or may not be related.

Answer:having some problems with windows like msconfig and task manager

Hi masterxplodr and welcome to TSF !

Do you have the XP install disk ? If so, go to start => run and type "sfc /scannow" (whithout the quotes and with the space). This will run the system file checker utility which will repair any missing or corrupt system files you could have. It's likely to ask for the XP CD during the scan.

I previously experienced an attack of Security Alert Virus In October. I let it in by talking on the phone and not reading before clicking. My fault. When I used Mbam to clean it, I had to disable some questionable start-up items. Random #'s and such. They remained unchecked.

If I go to normal start up mode, will the horrifying Security Alert Return?

I am currently I ran the Read and Run from Malware Removal Guide and got logs, but are they useless without normal start-up?

I'm definately rooted (Rootkit). I working on removing the rootkit. I can not start up in Safe Mode, but normal mode works now I just get constant redirects?

ComboFix is not working.

Thanks for any help

Not if the files related to them had already been removed. It really does not matter since we can clean them up anyway if a problem occurs. Just put your PC into normal startup mode as requested and run the cleaning procedure. Then attach the requested logs. If ComboFix does not run, just skip it but make sure you tell us exactly what happens. Don't just say it does not work. If you are having redirects, ComboFix is one of the most useful tools at finding why and fixing the problem.

I've done several scans and posted several HijackThis logs, and no malware or viruses have been detected. My own anti-virus scanners have shown the same. By just turning the computer on, I can have up to 43 running processes at a time, and that's just when the desktop has been loaded!

I read a suggestion that I should try and restart windows in diagnostic mode, by going to Start > Run: msconfig and click Selective Startup, selecting one at a time until I can recognize the problems, I go through all the motions, and the only way I can have my firewall to work (or the internet in general) is to basically select them all, which is really the same as a normal set-up. I heard of this site called www.RegClean.com, which was linked from the OCModshop.com website[/COLOR]. I just wanted to know if anyone has used this, if it's for real, or any other suggestions for what I am finding to be more of a common problem with people lately. Thanks.

i have this really weird problem

i just bought a new laptop last friday
and the first thing i noticed when i went on internet was everything looks really crappy in low quality for every picture and have to press ctrl + F5 for every single page i come to show it normally

weird thing is, i dont have the problem in windows itself or when playing a game/watching blueray movie

it also shows in other programs, everything that links pictures from the internet

for example in msn today or in game launcers
but no games themselves, but if i do load something like a movie on youtube(anything streaming) graphics of those things become very low

my specs are windows vista SP1 (allready had the problem before installing SP1 earlier today)

Answer:graphic problems(weird thing is, only in internet)

That is a natural occurrence it's called acceleration. The lower your acceleration level is the worse the pictures will look. It makes loading the page faster. You can increase the acceleration I think by clicking the connection center icon on the MSN explorer page although it did not always work for me. Also you can right click on the picture and select show original picture from the context menu and it will become clear.

I've downloaded and ran the rapidblaster killer, but I'm still seeing remenants of it. I am unable to run msconfig. Spybot stopped running completely, it would lock pc when I tried to run it. I've uninstalled Spybot and will be reinstalling it soon. This pc is locking up constantly and I'm not sure what all problems it does have at this point. Before going forward with any other fixes, I'd like you're opinion of which baddies it does have. I haven't ran Adaware recently, but the user had ran it 2 days ago.

Thanks for looking if you have the time.

Had a nasty problem yesterday with a virus - symptom was neither task manager, regedit or msconfig would run. They would flash on the screen sometimes and then shut down or just not launch.

Did a virus scan with AVG, Mcafee - showed a clean system - hah...

Read the earlier logs about WINCFG.SCR and BETA.EXE but neither on the system...hmm

Renamed msconfig.exe to configms.exe and it would then run ok.
Also downloaded PRCVIEW.

Found a weird process running VMJOAPQQDFR.exe, killed it and then things were ok, the three tasks would now work. Figured I had the problem licked. Took out the registry keys that were causing this process to launch.

Rebooted...dam...same problem but this time the weird process was SGPMPMKUOX.exe, killed it with PRCVIEW, rebooted and same thing again, but this time weird process is named QHZHRLMNWJ.exe, tried again but this time process was called PZPENENXFR.exe.

Somthing was reinstalling this...finally took out two entires for WIN88.EXE and WEBDAV.EXE from the startup, cleaned out the registry for the weird processes, cleaned out the weird executabes from the Windows\system32 directory and also deleted msconfig35 entries, executables.

Finally was able to get system to reboot without recreating the bad processes.

I do not know what virus is causing this problem with messed up task manager, regedit and msconfig but I do know it is not being found on normal virus scans - really nasty to get rid of.

Any thoughts about what I should have done differ... Read more

My regards to everyone.
I just joined here because i really need some experienced people's help. Not that i am somehow a noob in computer's industry, however, this problem was destroying me for the past few days.
This may sound like a few threads in one,and i am sorry for posting this as a new one,but i really need your help, because all the other threads i've read,on this and other forums, applied them, and no help whatsoever.

A few days ago, without doing something in particular, the sound just stopped working(does that sound familiar?). So as any other folk would do,i started every tiny little thing to fix that. So i cheched if the speakers, and then headphones, are correctly pluged in. They were. Then i tried disabling and enabling them from volume control options, then from control panel,u name it. Still nothing. So i uninstalled and re-installed my audio drivers. Again no use. I tried everything and literally got nowhere. So i thought it might be a glitch, and Re-Installed a fresh copy of windows. If it sounds familiar, from now on,this threat combines itself with others.
After reinstalling windows 7,my audio appeared as set to digital(s/pdif) and, ofcourse,no sound was available. The speakers and headphones appeared as unplugged. they were plugged in. So I went on the forums again, and saw that someone was informed to change something in bios. So i entered bios, and i saw everything was enabled, and set to HD Audio. When i looked at that,it said that i also have the AC97 option,so i... Read more

Answer:Audio big problems. No sound on windows 7. And that (S/PDIF) thing.

First thing, please fill in the "My System Specs" so we know what you have. It helps us to try and help you.

AC97 is the older interface standard for front panel audio (headset and microphone). The current standard is HD Audio. Depending on what interface you have (plug) that plugs into the front panel audio connector on the motherboard is what you should use. The difference between AC97 and HD Audio is basically jack sensing. With HD Audio the sound chip will sense (know) when you have something plugged in.

Go to the Device Manager and post a screenshot of the Sound section.

I am having some problems with my emachine because it won't turn on. My father and I have both tried fixing thing. Both of us do not have much experience with fixing computers but we wanted to getthis fixed as cheaply as possible. Anyway, like many have mentioned before, it was thought that the PSU was burnt out so that was changed but it still won't come on! Also, I have another computer, an older Compaq so Itried to see if I could still atthe least keep the hard drive but the drive brings up the "disk read error" when connected. The Compaq is REALLY old and only had 7GB for memory space while the emachine has about 40GB. The original Compaq HD still works but I was wondering if there was a way I can get the emachine to work again andfix my hard drive. I thought HDs were replaceable and it seemsto fit in the Compaq but still won't work. I really don't have any experience and I also haven't tried to renew my motherboard yet but I fear something may also be wrong with the HD. Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas? Thanks!

Answer:Emachine problems ~ hard drive and getting the thing to turn on

Well I configured the emachine HDD to slave and Compaq's to master but my computer only shows 7GB on the C drive and a little more than 1GB available on the newly added drive. How can I find the other 39GB? Sorry for the trouble but thank you anyhow.

I recently had a pretty badly infected computer that was sorted out over at the PCPitstop Forums (see thread here: http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.ph...ic=170536&st=0 ). Now that I am (presumably) clean, I have some other issues.

During the repair to my system I was told to update my Java (as well as uninstall old versions). I got a few notices that I couldn't because of admin things, but they uninstalled anyway it looked like, but then when I tried to install the latest (jre-6u14-windows-i586.exe) it says "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation." Thing is I am the only user and administrator. Doing some searching, I found the trying the MSInstaller clean up utility could help, but that give the same message when I try it. Then I saw I could check msconfig to make sure it was running. MSConfig shows it as Stopped, but the box is checked next to it. Trying to check and uncheck, then apply, it says "An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an administrator account to make the specified changes."

Some information:
Dell Inspiron E1705
Windows XP Media Center Edition SP3
Running Trend Micro PC-Cillin, SAS, Ad-Aware

Answer:Can't Install some programs or change things in msconfig (Admin problems?)

Even though your the only one using that pc, you might not be logged in as the administrator.

Log out (don't shut down)

hit ctrl+alt+del

administrator log in will appear, it has a password box but since you haven't set one one just press enter.

then hopefully you will be able to access everything

Three problems that I think are related.

(I'm running Windows XP, factory installed. I installed SP2, successfully, a few months ago.)

1. I can't get to System Restore. I choose System Restore from the System Tools menu and nothing happens. The cursor turns to an hour glass for a second, then changes back, and then it's as if I hadn't chosen any menu option--nothing at all happens.

2. If I type into the Run window msconfig, I get the following: "Windows cannot find msconfig. Make sure you typed the name correctly. . . . etc. . .."

3. Problem in the Control Panel. Some of the ten categories in the Control Panel I can click on and get to immeditately. But others, including Network and Internet Connections, when I click on it, I get the message "An error occurred while Windows was working with the Control Panel file c:\windows\system32\netsetup.cpl." I click OK, then the same box comes up again; after maybe ten times, finally the error box stops coming up and I do in fact get the Network and Internet Connections window.

help!

I was aghast for reinstallations of Windows 8 because of reasons unknown which ran operating system into trouble.
Now I know why this happened, because I selected maximum number of processors shown in 'Msconfig', which really doesn't exists ('Msconfig' showed 4 processors for Intel Core i3210).
From next start Windows 8 ran into trouble and within a day or two of using this desktop stopped responding, happened for all operating systems where I selected maximum number of processors shown in 'Msconfig'.
Therefore do not select maximum number of processors from 'Msconfig'.

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro c850 with Window 7 Home Premium which has become very slow and freezes, but it works perfectly in Safe Mode so I looked up how to identify the problem and found this: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135 I did what it says under Windows 7 and now when it boots up I get a 'location not available' message that msconfig isnt available, also if I search for msconfig nothing happens. (Pic 1,2,3) How do I get to normal mode now? I only clicked the boxes as shown in the tutorial.
I can access the boot menu and system setup if that helps at all? F2/F12. On system recovery Options I opened system 32 but I have no idea what I am doing so I haven't clicked anything. (Pic 4)
I dont have a restore point set or a restore image, nor can I find the full factory restore option in F8/F12. (Pic 5)
I tried doing a cmd 'sfc/scannow' but get the message that it doesnt recognise 'sfc'.
I did save folders etc onto a remote harddrive and I did make a system backup dvd disc just before doing the above but I don't have the original Windows installation cd. I'd prefer to just start all over from Factory Reset at this point (without erasing windows) if anyone has any ideas?
Someone please guide me to what I can do next.

Answer:I did an msconfig to selected startup and now msconfig isn't available

1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile folder and verify if it has the Desktop folder there.
2. If the Desktop folder does not exist, then create an new folder and rename it to Desktop or copy it from C:\Users\Default\Desktop location.
3. Open "C:\Users\[your user account]" folder. If you see two Desktop folders with one blank and the other with your Desktop items you need to delete the blank one.Note: C:\Users\Default is hidden by default.

Press Windows key and X together to open Windows Explorer.

Click Organize and select Folder and Search Options from the menu.

Click the View tab, and then click Show hidden files, folders, and drives.

Uncheck the box which states Hide protected operating system files.
Click Yes to confirm, and then click Ok button.

Ok, so I tried to update my internet explorer to version 8, and after I did, and restarted the computer, all of a sudden I couldnt type in Interent Explorer anymore.
I could still type in the URL address area way at the top of the page, but as for the actual IE, like if I went on any site and tried to type something, nothing would come up. I dont even think I could highlight anything anymore. And to make things worst, when I looked at the version of Internet explorer, it was still version 7! So I tried uninstalling it, and reinstalling it.
But when I uninstalled it, I was still able to access the internet through internet explorer, meaning it was not really uninstalled. So again I tried to reinstall version 8, and again my version remained version 7 and I couldnt type in anything.

Also I often get this script error, Error: 54 i think, so i thought maybe that was the problem. So I tried to download a microsoft script, and I installed it. But still got the same problems.

Then I tried updating my service pack, cuz I only have SP2, but for some reason my computer would never finish the installation.

What am i supposed to do?!?!?!?!?!

I've tried literally everything, please help. thank you.

Answer:Cant type in IE among other problems

Welcome to TSF

Run the System File Checker

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized) (Note that there is a space between sfc and /scannow)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.

My Windows Vista bar across the bottom, is up about an inch on my 17" screen. I have never notice this before and can't figure out how to drag it to closer to the bottom. Also when I open a second window on my computer the top margin is to high and I have to drag it down a ways. If any of this makes sense to anyone, could you please tell me how to fix such problems. Thanks in advance. Just learning how to use the new vista program that I have.

Type-Over Correction Problems

I'm having a HUGE problem regarding editing documents on the web as well as with Microsoft Word 2002 and while even typing here in the forum. I know it probably sounds like a minor bother but I'm going out of my mind here because I rely on WORD like every day and I use web forms like this forum every single day.

If I type a paragraph and then go back to edit it again (say in the middle of the paragraph) the typing TYPES RIGHT THROUGH the words that follow where I'm editing, erasing them in the process.

I'm confused for two reasons (1) Why on Earth would anyone actually WANT this to happen - it seems like a stupid "option" to have available on WORD. (2) Why and how exactly does this happening - I do not "prompt" WORD to do this.

I wish there was a way to eliminate this idiotic "option" wherever it is entirely.

Question: File Type Problems

I have a compact flash card that had a DCIM folder. The folder type has now changed to file only instead of file folder. What can I do to repair the file type. I have over 330 pictures in the folder that is now unaccessible.

The compact flash card was brought to me in this manner to attempt to fix.

Unsure what caused the file type to change.

Answer:File Type Problems

Try running Chkdsk on it: http://www.updatexp.com/windows-xp-chkdsk.html

If that doesn't work try a recovery program: http://www.pcinspector.de/smart_media_recovery/uk/welcome.htm

After you recover the info, if you can that is, I'd reformat the flash card in the camera its used in and that will redo the proper format and create the proper folders.

Bought a computer from a co worker and dont have restore disks, so im trying to rid if of its problems.. He pretty much told me he had no anti virus/malware/spyware programs running, and downloaded from torrents and looked at adult material.. The pc runs much slower than it should, and sometimes folders go missing, windows dropdown menus dont work most of the time, and sometimes you cant open any programs, move files, or pretty much do anything, due to an error message stating that the program could not open probably due to the hard drive is at compacity, which it is no where near maxed out. Its running windows vista, and ive done all of the vista cleaning procedure. Any help would be much appreciated.

well, I am usually pretty good with computers. I help people with theirs and build my own, but I can't figure out this problem.

(I will try to get a dxdiag off my pc and up load it here soon)

I was on my comp the other night just browsing espn.com and it just started to go blank. The computer itself would not freeze, but the monitor would go black for about one second. This would happen about once every 10 seconds. I just thought it was some kind of freak problem so I rebooted. While the comp was coming back on the vista loading bar was weird, it was tiny and in the top left of the monitor. Then when the comp came back on it blanked out much more. Then I updated my gfx drivers, but all the time this blanking was getting worse.

So next I changed my monitor to the vga plug in stead of the dvi. The blanking stopped (temporarily) but the computer took much longer to boot up. Then I tried a game. The game put itself in a fullscreen res and then got a lot of static. The blanking also started back, worse. I plugged my monitor into a laptop and it seems to work with no problem. Everything also seems very slow. My comp gets stuck when coming on now, too. I have to reset it after it gets stuck.

Is the problem my video card, psu, processor, or what?

Thanks

I recently reset the system to 'True Type' and did not like the appearance and turned off the True Type. However, I'm now left with applications that are still showing either parts of their software in True Type or all of their software's representation in same.

Examples of this problem are: Outlook, Bookmarked (on toolbar) Firefox pages, Explorer, and more.

Is there not a way to get rid of True Type once selected?!

Mark

Answer:True Type--Problems

Hi Mark. I know this is going to sound stupid and you've probably already thought of it but have you gone to Control Panel - Programs and Features and deleted it? Probably a dumb answer because I don't know what True Type is but thought I'd give it a try. OK looked up True Type and this is a dumb answer. So I can only suggest you press F1 and get the Help Search box and go from there. Try typing in 'disable' or 'shut off' True Type.

Answer:Device Type Problems

Hello,

I am having a problem with my CD & DVD drives....originally I had lost them after installing some software. But after many hours I was able to recover them.....now the problem I am having is that under Device Manager they are showing up as
Device Type: Unknown.

I'm having problems now with some programs I utilize because they can not locate the drives because the device type is Unknown and these programs won't let me chande their drive location settings.

Does anyone know how I could change the device type on this back to CD-Rom?

I already uninstalling, but that didn't do anything.

Thanks

Hello,I have made an update from Windows XP to Windows 7 and now the sound is off. Please give me some advice waht to do. Thanks in advanceTdM

Answer:R60 type 9461 audio problems

Hi, TdM

I would recommend trying to update the driver through Windows, which can be accomplished by first opening Device Manager from Control Panel. Once this is open, open the Sound, video and game controllers tree. Right-click on one of the audio devices and select Properties. Once here, select the Driver tab and click Update Driver. Repeat this for all audio devices and see if that helps.

Best,
Adam

Surface 1 Pro Type Keyboard Problems:
No letters between i and m, so no J, K or L.
zxzx is typed when I press either button x or z.
B and w auto tabs sometimes b w .
Usable characters left to right @#$ &*()[{]}\| ,< missing`~!%^&-_=+;:.>/?
1 when it works automatically adds the forward slash /, it also takes a couple presses. 1/
Direction buttons don't work properly left adds \ and down turns on/off Caps lock.
So weird!
I have cleaned the contacts and the keyboard, everything is in good condition.
I dont know what to do, please help!
Thank you!
Obviously I cleaned this text up with the built in keyboard, and the trackpad works normally for the most part. That being said I like my keyboard and don't want to pay for a new one or a bluetooth one.

Answer:Surface Pro Gen 1 Type Cover Problems! Can I get some help?

Do you have a friend nearby with another Surface 1 Pro type cover? That way, you could check if it is hardware related (keyboard or contacts) or software / firmware related (in which case you could solve the problem with a factory reset). In case nobody in your area has one, try stopping by at a Microsoft store. With a little bit luck, they still may have one laying around for a test.
If it is the former, you'll have no choice but buy a new keyboard. :(

Hello dear community members, I bought 2 weeks ago a new notebook S10e and I am very upset with it. I was used to a good Siemens/Fujisu laptop before.....I already phoned with the Lenovo helpdesk (a callcenter in Athens...) people there couldn't`t help me at all because they ´were no technical experts, just a kind of human relation support. My problems are: 1.I am not able to open Mozilla Firefox, only Internet Explorer works. I tried to uninstall Firefox and did a reinstall - no change. It just doesn't`t work. 2.I want to install the Google toolbar on Internet Explorer, no chance! the download stops by 134 from 196 KB. 3.I can`t do updates on my tax programs, that means I can't do my tax work now because I am not able to do a program update and I am not able to send it to the finance office (I did a test) it doesn't`t work.It works very well on other computers. I already used ThinkVantage where I did an update -  this one works. Also the update from my Avira AntiVir works.I also tried to start Firefox and all the other programs without the Windows firewall, no success.I don`t use anything else that could block. This makes no sense at all and I am really helpless where to go what to do? I miss a good technical support for my first Lenovo product. Is there maybe anyone who knows about my problems with the S10e?Thank you for reading my post. I hope to hear from you. Best travelsue

Hi,

I have Problems gaining a sufficient NAT Type (2 or 1) with my PS3, although I have followed all support I found in the internet. At the moment I have set up my 4G Router (Huawei B593) and PS3 as follows:

PS3:
Wired Connection / Auto-Detect
Static IP: 192.168.1.10
Subnet-Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default-Router: 192.168.1.1
DNS 1: 192.168.1.1
DNS 2: 192.168.1.1
MTU: Automatic
Proxy: Do not use
UPnP: Disabled (Found advise to disable, because it can affect the Connection)

Router:
Static IP assigned for PS3, Notebook etc. like 192.168.1.5, 192.168.1.10, ... and so on
Set DHCP Range to 192.168.1.50 to 250
Firewall is Disabled
DMZ enabled for PS3 IP
UPnP: disabled
SIP ALG: disabled
Port Mapping: See attachement

Also turning on UPnP wont affect the NAT Type.

Whereas I have followed all instruction found on the www, and I dont get the NAT 2 or 1, and I am residing in Saudi Arabia, I am thinking if Internet Restrictions by the government could cause this problem?

If yes, are there any solution? Like VPN or else?

Thanks,
-TechNoob-

I recently started having a problem with my windows 10 enterprise and it mainly happened after experiencing a BSOD, and the problem is every time I try to change icon type from view menu it changes but just when I leave that folder and enter it again it returns to the same type again and that really annoying me, that also happens with my desktop icons every time I reorder them with my preferred order and after I make a refresh it returns to that old order again .. it's really frustrating it's like my windows having some kind of amnesia.

P.S. All my icons were stuck to details view after that BSOD and I rarely uses this view so after searching on the net i found a .bat file that changes it to Large icons or picture view which I like it, but again it stuck with this view and I sometimes I use others with specific folders.

Any help would be appreciated ..

Answer:Having problems in changing icons type

Hi I think what you mean is that the folder view setting is not staying as you set it in file explorer, rather than 'icons type'.

Your two problems are reflected in this long thread:
Windows 10: Folder View Settings and Desktop Icon Positions Not Saving - Windows 10 Forums

Note this is not particular to Win 10- it's occurred in other versions.

I have a new Gateway Media Ctr PC and recently started getting these annoying adserver windows opening, and directing to certain sites. If I leave my pc unattended for a while, there could be tons of these windows opened. I've gone thru all the steps outlined in the malware removal process you list, and have attached my HJT log below. Can you see anything listed that would be generating these ad windows? AdAware removed some stuff, and SpyBot, CW Shredder, and HouseCall found nothing after that. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I'm a Advertising Consultant for a news paper & I make sales presentations with power point. My company just got the s10-3t for me.The portability and long battery life are great for what I will be using it for . I read that the multi-touch features don't work with WIN 7 starter. Is this true? & what other problem might I encounter with WIN 7 starter.

Answer:What type problems come with Windows 7 starter on the s10-3t?

With the Starter Edition you won't get the Tablet features that are available in Premium or higher. I posted some video of the S10-3t doing some inking, some web browsing with about 8 applications running and runs good. Also in the video I show how you can use PenFlicks which is again is available in Premium or higher. With this you can set certain functions using just flicks on the screen.

In the last month or so I have been having various problems with my 8 month old hp envy pc with windows 8. It started when one day all the icons on my desktop view suddenly got bigger and the minimize/close buttons disappeared from Google Chrome browser. Awhile later the most annoying thing happened. When I type the cursor times out at about 5 sec intervals so I can't type (like ths its so annoying, noticmissing letters due to timeuts!e) and at the same time the framing/background by the hotbar flashes bright and back to dark, like when you click on something. I can no longer scroll us the wheel on my mouse. Also when I highlight words to delete them I have to do it twice. Have checked my keyboard and mouse drivers and status, both utd and computer says functioning well. Ran virus check, none detected. Please help, so very frustrating!!!!!

Answer:can't type, framing of screen flashes, various problems
