{Moved to Hardware} can't find modem after reformatting

Question: {Moved to Hardware} can't find modem after reformatting

After reformatting my friends computer (yes, I have done this before) we have a couple of problems that I have never dealt with before. Ist of all, we have only 2 or 16 colors available (windows 98) and even worse, we have no modem detected. We took the modem out and put it back in , rebooted, hoping that it would be detected. It wasnt. There is NO information about this modem on it or in the spec sheet for the pc. So, we have no clue about drivers, where to get them, manufacturer etc. Where do we begin?
Any help you can give will keep us busy enough to maintain our sanity ;-) since I have to come all the way home, get ideas , go back and try them at her house-this is turning out to be quite the chore. I appreciate your help ALOT

Preferred Solution: {Moved to Hardware} can't find modem after reformatting

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've begun having errors with the partitions on my new hard drive, but scandisk and some other programs don't show any errors. But Disk Minder, and the Fat 32 conversion program in Win 98 report problems (like, where are your partitions dude? We can't see them.), as did Partition Magic, which would not run. This is a new Maxtor 27 Gig drive, and the Maxtor auto partition program hicupped. I ultimately used FDisk, and it looked like it worked. The reason I got stuck with 2 Gig partitions (a whole bunch) is that I was also running an old NT at the time. Now I'm confused 'cause I've got a huge system here and don't want to have to buy another large hard drive just for backup and re-install everything again. Is that what I'm going to have to do? I will if I must!

Hi everybody :

I've been looking at some hardware for my computer...as spare parts. I need some advice. I have a Gigabyte GA-Z77-DS3H Motherboard, that uses an Intel Core i3 processor LGA 1155 , Corsair 2Gb (takes two chips) DDR3 PC10600 1333Mhz. I purchased all this around the same time.....July 2013. The computer is still functioning okay (a few "bumps" here and there). Usually, under, at least, fair conditions, how long SHOULD the memory last? Before it goes bad ? And the same question for the processor ? I'd like to be able to get some spare parts, just in case. In a last case scenario, I would probably have to do it all over again.......the MOBO, Processor and memory.
garystan

Answer:Computer Hardware [moved to Hardware>Building]

RAM and Processors don't wear out or fail due to time. RAM can fail for many reasons but if it is currently functioning there's no reason it won't continue to run forever. Things that could kill ram are failing power supply, voltage issues on the motherboard, power surges, static charges, etc. Processors are even more resilient. If the processor is run withing specified parameters it will run forever.

It's much more likely for a hard drive to fail. Motherboards can fail for many of the same reasons that RAM can fail. In all my time building and using computers, I've never had RAM fail or a CPU fail but I have had motherboards or components of the board fail and certainly hard drives have failed.

Since I have had no luck fixing the browser problem and hours and hours of tech support folks have had no luck. . . I guess I will reformat the hard drive. Are there any things I should be aware of? What is the very safest and easiest way to do it? I know I will lose all information on the drive. I have backed up what I think I may want. I have a floppy disk that Windows 98 made for start up.

I have a CTX computer AMD 350 with 32RAM and original Windows 98. I did not receive a factory "restore" disk from CTX. Would it be important for me to try to obtain one?

I would like to start this right away, if anyone can help, i'd be very appreciative!
Thanks!!

ok the specs of the machine are

AMD athlon xp 2100+ mb is a gigabyte 7vt600-rz
2 512mb ram in the last 2 slots
500 watt psu
a maxtor 40 gig hdd
a cdrw lite on, and a cdrom.

only the floppy cdrom and hard drive are hooked up all on there own cable with only one device on each.

the cdrw is failing to read disks at the moment although it worked earlier today.

ok the problem comes in when I try to fdisk the drive I have jumpered it to master and cable select. both only let me see 2gigs of the 40gig drive to fdisk if I say I dont want the maximum it says it has 8gigs but I can only fdisk 2gigs though there are no other partitions the first time I fdisked it showed all 40gigs but since then it only shows 8 or 2 depending on what I am doing atm the hdd has the dos system files on so it can boot but that is all any suggestions would be great Derrick

Due to my gaming habits I went out and bought a hardware modem because I was told it will perform better for online gaming. So I went out, spent $80 on a USR5610b performance pro hardware modem. Brint it home and randomly throughout the day, the internet stops responding (no disconnection) and forces me to disconnect the connection and reconnect. Basically what I mean is that if I was browsing, I can no longer browse and check my e-mail or play an online game until I reconnect. This never happened with my going on 6 year old Winmodem, plus the Winmodem connects at a higher speed. I am limited to a 28.8k connection because I am on a pair-gain system through the telco. The 5610b would only connect at 24k or lower. I put the old Winmodem back in and no more problems again. Put the hardware modem back in and back to the internet stop responding problem. So I figure bad modem and bring it back to the store and exchange it for another. Bring the new one back home and the same thing happens.

I call my ISP and after a couple months of back and forth, they still do not have an answer for me. I called US Robotics and they say that it isn't the modem and they can't explain why the Software modem is out performing the Hardware modem.

So I put my Winmodem back in and forget about the problems. That was about 1 1/2 months ago or so. Then last week, my faithful Winmodem fails to connect to the internet and I figure that it gave up the ghost as it were. Put the Hardware mode... Read more

Answer:Software modem out performs a Hardware modem??

I think you are confused on the wording on this.

You purchased an external modem, not a hardware modem. You "software" modem is an internal modem.

The only reason to buy an external modem is if you don't have any room to put in an internal modem in your computer. I'd take back your external modem and just buy an internal modem. Internal modem are a heck of a lot cheaper than what you pay for an external.

After I reformatted the hard drive and laplinked my Canon Inova computer, I was unable to activate my modem. Before formatting, it was on com port 3, after lapinking and upgrading to windows 95 it didn't show a com port 3 as being in the computer(that is it was not detected by the installation wizard when I tried to reinstall my modem.)
How can I get com 3 to be recognized by the wizard and reactivate my modem?

Answer:unable to activate modem after reformatting computer and laplinking.

I don't think it should have changed, but check in your BIOS and make sure it is still set to active. How old is the system? If the setting in the BIOS is changed it's possible your MainBoard battery is getting low.

I have taken the hard drive out of thelaptop and have recovered all user files.
Since I'm going to reload this... I want to find the driver files (WinXP may find for me)

Where would I find driver files (directory) I could save before I reformat this drive.

Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to C:\SDFix

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode (without Networking) by doing the following :Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
Select the option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
Choose your usual account.
Open the C:\SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back here along with a Combofix log..(below)

I have a hardware conflict that I belive is causing my modem to hang when attempting to go online.Win.95/Zoom v90 dual standard modem.Cserve is isp.Everything except the conflict has been de-bugged but it may be due to the fact that the original 14.4 faxmodem that came in the original config is conflicting with the Zoom modem which I installed in 99.Worked O.K. until my connection speed availability went to 37k from 23 or 24 due to new lines installed in area. When it DOES connect it makes the wav. file("thank you for using compuserve")stutter when disconnecting.Never does it at lower connect speeds.I tried disabling the old modem in setup but it caused another conflict.I have followed the troubleshooter step by step but can't get it and it shows a conflict with com port 2 and doesn't even show com port 1 on the device list. The modem, however, shows it's on com port 1 which is where it's supposed to be.I know this is confusing but maybe we can narrow it down and fix it.
Thanks in advance.

Answer:{MOVED FROM WIN-OS}hardware conflict

Are these conflicts showing up in Device Manager?

What, exactly, are they?

Do you have both modems still in the computer?

It is normal, by the way, for a modem to have a COM port which does not show up in the PORTS list. So, don't worry about that.

Yes i know this is a well question asked often. But my new laptop has 4 GB RAM and when i play a well known game like Minecraft it only uses about 1.66 even when i use a game boosting system to shut down background programs. But anyway is there a solution to this no this is RAM that was built in from the company I DIDN'T install it myself. Please email me at if you have a solution thank you for your time. (I apologize that this might be in the wrong topic if it is I'm very sorry but please answer)

Email address removed.

Answer:Windows 7 64 Bit not using all RAM [moved from Hardware]

There is no solution because there is no problem.

The memory graph in Windows 7 is somewhat misleading. It implies that only 1.66 GB RAM is in use with the remainder free. This is not the case, not even close. Most of the remainder is in the system cache, standby list, or used for superfetch and is very much in use. Only memory labeled as "Free" in task manager is unused. The memory manager always maintains control over RAM allocation, always with the goal of improving overall performance. It is very good at this.

Second.

A little tougher to explain..
Lets say I am typing in the 2nd line and the mouse arrow is in the 1st line position, then after some time the cursor poistion is shifted to the 1st line, even though I have not changed it. I thought intially it maybe I have pressed some key on the keyboard but it keeps on happening, so I am pretty sure its not any keys pressed on the keyboard. So if anyone can please understand and help me out, thank u very much...

Third

When I visit some web sites the ad images are not appearing at all. A example is attached in the word document. The problem areas are marked in red circles...

Hi everybody :

Has anyone else heard of Intel's plan to "close up shop", and stop producing CPUs and Intel-based Motherboards ? I accidentally came across numerous websites confirming this. The general information is, that Intel plans on closing doors within a three-year period. With that scenario, that would only leave AMD as the ONLY source for CPUs. And AMD-based Motherboards.

After It was done downloading I launched the program and did what it said. It downloaded the latest files but when it was going to install them it said something that a cabinet file could not be trusted and then it said installation failed. I've tried over and over. Please Help.

When I highlight something on the net and right click it the menu pops up like it's supposed to. However when I left click on the menu to save target or copy it acts like a dead link. It won't do anything. When I click to the side of it, the menu disappears like it should.

You might try = Right Click on start menu/ properties/customize/advanced, and check enable dragging and dropping

Try reverting to classic start menu and see if it helps.
right click on taskbar/choose properties/start menu/use classic start menu.

If that does not solve it, try booting to safe mode. Try with user name Administrator (no password if you never protected this hidden account accessible only in safe mode boot).

Right, I'm dealing with a very old pc (has a Win95 sticker on the case somewhere). Only it's currently running XP Pro. The main problem however is that the owner (a friend of mine) has managed to... well; It was swarming with malware and spyware, and they've obviously noticed a drop in performance and downloaded practically every free tool to "optimize your pc" (<- what a load of crap!).

But to the point, I figured the easiest way to get rid of all that lovely (now solidly embedded) crap would be to simply back-up, format, and re-instal Win. So I've backed up their files onto my PC. Now I've gone to install XP (using a disc burned from a working tested image) but it wont boot from CD. I went to do a clean install from within windows, but obviously doing it that way doesn't let me format the drive during setup (as setup's already copied files to it).

There's only 1 partition on (to be honest) a pathetic sized drive (roughly 14GB i believe). So I go into BIOS to try to get it to boot from CD. Now there are 2 Disc Drives (IDE2: Ma/Sl). As far as I can tell IDE2:Ma is faulty, so I'm trying to boot from the slave. Only the BIOS boot sequence options are crap.

I have the boot options of sequences including "A, C, D, E, F, ZIP, SCSI, CDROM". Now I've tried having CDROM as first boot device to no avail. Have also tried first boot from D, E, F. Annoyingly the boot sequences are preset, and I can only choose from a preset combination, and as such, cannot... Read more

Try making a Windows 98 boot disk from here. It should load the drivers so you can access the Win XP cd and run setup. From there it should all work.

Well from just looking at my previous posts on this forum you know I have a thing for BSODs. Also this thread here: Solved 2 BSODs 2 Days - Windows 7 Forums

Last week I was getting BSODs (sent the dump files to Jonathan King as well)

Some of the error codes were:
BUGCHECK_STR: 0xD1
BUGCHECK_STR: 0x50
BUGCHECK_STR: 0xA
BUGCHECK_STR: 0xD1
BUGCHECK_STR: 0x1a_41790

I had a couple when in Windows, then I got to the point where I couldn't even boot to desktop. The BSODs were all slightly different when in Windows but the one I kept getting was HIDCLASS.sys

I said screw it and purchased a brand new mobo and RAM (I had tested old RAM for 25hours and had no problems, but new Mobo meant new RAM) . Had the new kit installed for no more then 5days now and having problems.

This morning I was on my iPad using an application called splashtop, sort of like teamviewer. I exited it on my iPad and my monitor had gone weird. My primary screen was unreadable, I can't describe this any more. The secondary screen on the other hand was fine.

I decided to pull out 1 DVI cable from graphics card. I looked at monitors again, BOTH were black.
I put the DVI back in, looked again and I had a BSOD!

Hey all,

I have my bosses laptop. He said last night he caught a virus. I havent gotten into it to deep myself and before I do wanted some ideas on where I should start.

Computer starts fine. Wireless may or may not work. Can get into bios but there are no options in there at all. Ill post more about that after I get into it. When hitting the start button, there is no link to my computer, my documents no my anything. No link to control panel or really anything other then major programs like media player, word.... Also after hitting start there is only the turn off button listed. Not sure if this is a standard with laptops as this will be my first attempt at fixing one. I can get into safe mode and log in as Admin and when doing that, I have accest to all the normal stuff (ie my this my that, control panel.)

Just want some ideas where to start trouble shooting. Im going to install AVG and Spybot first step. What do yaz think?

What makes my 19" "View Mate" monitor flicker yellow then after awhile go back to white?
This is very annoying.
Thanks

Answer:{Moved to Hardware} Yellow monitor

The first thing you should check for is if the monitor cables are connected tight. Sometimes I find that my color goes gray or purple, etc. when the cables are hanging half way out.

Also, this topic would get hits all day long if it were in the Hardware forum -- an administrator will eventually see this and move it BTW, your other post will probably get moved to the Windows 98 or the Applications forum.

Hello everyone, I`m glad I stumbled across this forum while looking for a solution for my weird problem. I wasn`t sure whether I should put this in Windows XP section or Keyboard section... I decided to take a shot with this section, but please move it wherever you think it should be.

My problems have started a few days ago, when my Logitech G15 Keyboard started acting in a very strange way. I`ll try to describe my problems in the order I had noticed them as well as I can (English is not my first language tho). Also, I`m correcting the numerous errors that my keyboard makes so I make this post as understandable as possible.

1. I can`t type big letters, as if my Shift key isn`t working. When I hold Shift key, nothing happens at all, or I get a small letter in the best case.
2. My Caps Lock key turns on randomly. Pressing the Shift key sometimes triggers the caps lock key too.
3. Even when my caps lock key is working, the led indicator light is blinking in very short intervals - it is not constantly lit.
4. Now, whenever i press shift or caps lock key, it all goes crazy. Sometimes i get big letters when my caps is off, sometimes i get small letters when my caps is on, sometimes its normal.
5. After the problems start occuring, and i try to type something, sometimes i get nothing out, my keyboard "remembers" the letters I`ve pressed and there`s a 5-6 second delay until the letters appear on the screen.
6. When this "remembering" problems occur, the... Read more

Answer:Keyboard problem[moved from o/hardware

Hi Petar,

This may sound far fetched but try using a bootable CD something like linux (Ubuntu or Knoppix liveCD) and see if your keyboards do the same thing. If yes, then it could be hardware.. may be not your keyboards but something inside your pc. However if it is not the case in linux, try repairing your Windows installation.

I originally set up a modem downstairs for me and my three roomates. It is an ActionTec wireless modem and router in one, compatible with Qwest DSL. We moved the modem upstairs hoping to get better reception and we did, but one of our roomates is no longer able to get a connection. SOMETIMES he does, but it will cut him out or go very slow. The internet is decent for rest of us, although it goes slow sometimes, which is expected with so many people on one modem. We have tried to fix our roomates connection but we just can't firgue it out. Are there any suggestions??? Thanks so much.

Answer:Moved modem, now doesn't work!

I'm assuming this is a wireless connection, right? If so, you probably have either signal strength issues, or possibly interference. One thing you can do is install a hi-gain antenna on the router to increase the signal strength, which is a pretty cheap fix. You might also try changing the channel on the router to see if you can improve the situation.

I am buying a new PC from Velocity Micro this evening and I need to know, which is better a software modem or a hardware modem?
Unfortunately I still use dial-up though I hope to get high-speed soon. I will not be doing any online gaming with this computer while I have dial-up.

Here are the preliminary specs on the PC if matters:
Velocity Micro Vector GX Holiday Edition
Motherboard: Genuine Intel P965 Chipset Motherboard with DDR2, PCI Express.
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6400, dual 2.13 GHz cores, 2MB L2 Cache
RAM: 1024MB Corsair DDR2 PC5300 DDR667 (1 x 1024).
GPU: 256MB eVGA NVIDEA GeForce 7600 GS.

Answer:Software modem or hardware modem?

If i remembered correctly, hardware modem will work with other OS such as linux. Who uses dialup anyway? save your $$$, get the CHEAPEST modem as you will upgrade to broadband soon.

I recently was given an hp deskjet 820Cse from my 90 year old grandma. She claims it doesn't work and i should fix it. When i first turn it on, the init. process starts, and then the printhead slams extremely hard against the side of the printer. this would be cool, besides the fact the printer doesn't work. Also the Power and Form fead lights are blinking.

Anybody know how i can fix it? Thanx!

I am having trouble with getting my linux partition into Bootmagic. I have Partition Magic 5 and I have these Drives:
Disk 1:
C:WIN98 | FAT32 | 4110.4 | 2679.1 | 1431.2 | Active | Primary

Disk 2:
D: | FAT32 | 8385.5 | 4569.2 | 3816.3 | None | Primary
*. | Extended | 1145.3 | 1145.3 | 0.0 | None | Primary
*.Linux | Linux Ext2 | 1082.5 | 832.5 | 250.5 | Bootable | Logical
*.SWAP-SPACE | Linux Swap | 62.7 | 0.0 | 62.7 | None | Logical

For those unfamiliar with Partition Magic, The catagories are:
Partition | Type | Size MB | Used MB | Unused MB | Status | Pri/Log

Okay, now I go into bootmagic and it detects my c: drive (good) that has windows 98 and then it detects my primary first partition as being bootable with "Win95/98 or MS-DOS". So I look in the help and it says if your drive you want to boot from was not detected then click the advanced box and choose your drive. I click, and nothing happens, It only shows my C: and my first partition.

I'm really stumped here. Please help.

OK...so this all started a few days ago. First...I was surfing the web then all of a sudden my taskbar (windows xp) changes from XP style to classic windows style. It won't let me change it back to xp...it loads when I tell it to (or acts like its loading) then still maintains classic style. (The problem fixes when a restart happens, but it goes back to classic after awhile).

The next problem...when the taskbar thing seems to be acting up...my audio device also DISAPPEARS. My sound still works on my pc...but it no longer works on the internet. This problem also fixes itself when a restart takes place, and the audio device shows up again....but only to disappear again when the taskbar problem acts up again. Yeah so I'm not sure whats going on. I've tried virus and spyware checks, reinstalling audio drivers, etc. but the problem continues. Help?

so i just got this new laptop, and i already have issue with it :(

it is a dell vostro 1500 with windows xp. everything seems to be working fine since i got it last wednesday. however, seemingly out of the blue since last friday, i've noticed this continual lag when i type.

meaning, i'll type like 10 words in a sentance. when i get to the 7th word, the screen sorta "freezes" and chugs, so that it does not display what i've typed until a few seconds later.

its not just the text, either. i noticed, even while i'm typing this post now, that when i get to these little lag sessions, even the animated GIF smiley faces slow down and/or stop.

incredibly frustrating.

i contacted dell support but they've thusfar proven themselves worthless.

do any of you know of such an issue? and, please oh please, do you know of its fix?

thanks.

Good morning,

I am having a major problem with my PC at the moment and hope I can get some help.

A couple of days ago an error popped up stating there was a problem with "Launch Application 2".
After this we could no longer start certain programs like Internet Explorer but we could launch some programs like Word and Excel.

Also, I can no longer copy and paste, so getting my personal files off the PC is difficult. And the Taskbar on the bottom of the screen no longer shows which programs are running.

I presume I have some sort of an infection, but without being able to open Internet explorer or our virus software, we have no way to determine what is wrong or how to fix it.

I tried to do a system restore, but a dialog box pops up saying I can't do a restore.

Any help you might be able to provide would be appreciated.

Regards.

every graphics related program doesnt utilize video card
reinstalling drivers doesnt work, tried that 7 times used driver sweeper, cc cleaner, safe mode and all that
closed every unused programs

fps dropped from 10 to 30
power options is set on high performance, no limits on CPU performance

bad driver installation probably, still cant get it to install properly even after this many attempts
theres no avaliable update for my BIOS

there was a couple times where it did install correctly and working well no problems but turning off the computer causes the problem again, not just turning off blue screens and crashes also cause this
gotten a bluescreen, which just made the problem start happening again, it scrolls down too fast to see what file caused it. possibly nvdisp.dll

but riva tuner says nvdisp.dll is not found
refreshed/updated my system rating

while the problem is happening my card goes at a lower than usual temperature and EVGA precision tells me that only 0 to 20% of the card is being utilized, its dumping nearly everything onto the CPU, CPU usuage doesnt go up that high, i think i dont usually check that

nvidia Geforce GTS250 zotac version
windows vista service pack 1 32bit
rocket fish 550Watts power supply
avast antivirus

if this was something simple i would've already fixed it
if i type sentences it makes it harder for you to understand

Hello,

I didn't know where to put this form, so i just chose the MISC. of this one!

I have Windows XP and have Norton, which I update regularly; Ad-aware, which I set up regular scans; have checked for viruses which Norton says there are none, but my computer is incredibly slow. It takes at least 4 minutes for each page to load and at times freezes up entirely. I'm also getting pop-ups from porno sites and others. The computer sounds like it is racing while I have it on and at times when I restart, I return to a blank screen.

Have spent so much time and $ in trying to figure out the problem. This site was referred to me by a friend and hope that someone here can please help me.

Thank you ever so much

hi. i would like to flash my bios and i have looked every where i can think of to get an upgrade. can someone help me out the following are the details. my award bios string is 2A59CPAC-00 and my chipset is intel triton-fx. thanx

Answer:{Moved to Windows Hardware Forum} - BIOS upgrade

You wouldn't happen to know the make/model of the Motherboard?

If not, you can check the FCC ID number, there's a database (whose location eludes me at the moment. It's early) that you can run it against to find out what it is.

that would make it much easier to find yourself a bios upgrade.

hello, i am new to this forum, so pardon me for any noob threads or anything. My problem is that my computer freezes when i load up certain games, them being:

Crysis (including Warhead and War)

while other games seem to work, such as

and so on, i don't feel like naming all of them.

My computer specs are as follows:

i'm not so sure what exactly is causing the problem, and would love to have this problem solved.

Hello, I just purchased a new PIII 933 mhz computer. I had to install an OS, Windows 98, and after I was installing all the drivers for the hardware. I am having trouble, however, getting the computer to detect my modem. I installed it in one PCI slot and it wasn't recognized and then I installed it in another PCI slot. When I rebooted it detected new hardware but did not setup the driver for it. I have the driver disk, but for some reason I can't get it to work either. I really have no idea how com, irq, etc work and I really need some help. Also, because of this I think that Windows isn't shutting down properly. It goes to the shutdown screen and just freezes. I would appreciate any help asap. Thank you and hope to hear from you soon.

I'm trying to use new combined router / modem (Belkin F5D7632) with my broadband connection but am having problems. I only get problems with a wired connection to my PC, not with a wireless connection to my laptop or with a wired connection to my laptop.

If i switch my PC back to using the old usb modem the problem disappears. Basically I get intermittent, sometimes persistent slow page downloading and some sites simply refuse to load at all, but others work fine. I have IE7 and firefox2; both are affected the same.

I have XP media centre with SP2. I've disabled windows firewall, uninstalled stopzilla, adaware and google toolbar . I still have avg anti virus and windows defender left for protection. I've tried resetting IE7, but still no difference.

I thought about installing IE6 to see if this made any difference, but now i can't get to the windows download site.

Belkin support think there's a problem with my PC, since my laptop works fine when wired or wireless.

I'm fresh out of ideas. Can anybody help?

Answer:Problems web browsing through router but not with usb modem [Moved to networking]

Well, I have to agree with Belkin on this issue. Since wired and wireless connections work fine, it's hard to blame the router.

Answer:moved all my videos now i cant find

Welcome scccs.

I hope you do not mind me asking, but what exactly do you mean by videos? Downloaded ones?

System restore will not help restore documents.

Are you sure they are not in the recycle bin? Have you tried searching for them? (Go to 'Computer' in the Start Menu and just use the top right-hand field to search (enter a name of one of these videos?)).

Get the "Search Everything" programme, free and available here: http://www.voidtools.com/Use the file type as a search unit ie: *.txt or *.doc or *.docx and it will list every thing it finds with those parameters. Scan through them and you will be bound to find your lost file because you will instantly recognise the "forgotten" file name.

First off I'm not talking about the mouse cursor. I'm talking about the cursor in a word document or the item or icon selected on page. Basically, it's like I was holding down the right arrow key on my keyboard. It seems to start after I play a game or run 3dmark06 but that might just be coincidence.

System
CPU: C2D E6420
VC: 7900 GS
OS: Windows XP
Keyboard: Microsoft Digital Media Pro
Mouse: Logitech MX1000 laser mouse

Examples
I select bookmarks in Firefox. Then the selection continuously moves to the right (to Tools, then to help, back to file, then to edit, then to view...)

I select an icon on the desktop and it moves to an icon to the right until there are no more icons to the right.

I start typing anywhere and try to move the cursor to the left, it will automatically go back to the right.

Pretty much anywhere there's a cursor, it will move to the right.

i'm really lost. i just disconnected my computer last night (worked fine then)...just about an hour ago i went to hook it back up again. started it up...just after it detected all my drives...i got one of those error beeps. (keyboard one i believe)...then it continues on...the lights on the keyboard even do that typical flashy thingie....then does the usual cdrom boot check...then i get another error beep....then my screen goes black...and it waits till i press a key (i think) because when i've hit ctrl it moves on to load windows2000...then when it gets to the "press ctrl-alt-del to login" screen...nothing works...the keyboard doesn't respond (the caps light won't even come on)...and plus there is no cursor...

pretty poor grammer and even english in that description...so i hope someone is able to decode it. i would really appreciate any help!

thanx in advance..

Answer:{Moved to Hardware Forum} - not detecting keyboard or mouse at boot up.....

Hi,

Have you made sure you plugged the keyboard into the keyboard socket, and not the wrong way round. If you got it round the right way, take the cables out, and make sure there is no damage to the pins (Nothing bent or missing). If that doesn't work, take all the cables out,and start again from the beginning.

Hope this helps.

I bought a used Compaq Armada 7710MT laptop. The seller gave me the login password -- all was well.

Then I decided to reload Windows NT to eliminate the network setup and operate the laptop "stand-alone."

Bad idea! It changed the login! So-o-o, I went into the bios setup and reset the password -- all was well again.

Did a few setup changes, very minor.

Then I shut down.

When I tried to boot up again, well -- all was not well!! I got a "power-on password" request. I went to a Compaq site and it notes that I must remove the case and turn the jumper switch off, and back on, to remedy (delete) the "power-on password" request.

H-e-l-p! Isn't there a quickie way to address this problem???

Thanks.

Geez I can't think of what else to do. Using an adaptec 2930U scsi adapter (50pin high den.) into the scanner, (no converter between).

First I was getting a stop error. Dropped the transmission rate of the scsi id (tried id#'s 2,3,4,5). When I dropped the transmission rate it didn't get a stop error (I assume the stop was due to a failure for the scanner to respond). Running the scsi bios check/id scanner it would time out when ever it hit the scanner. Ok, so chagned the trans. rate to 5, and NT booted but under the scsi applet /adaptec there was no device found. Went back into the scsi bios and did the following:
1. scsi synchronize transfer=no
2. max synch transfer=5 (later changed back to 20, as it didn't seem to hav any effect with these other changes)
3. enable disconnection=no
4. parity checking=disabled
5. scsi termination=enabled

With these settings I get the following devices showing up under the adaptec 2930U card:
HP [email protected]
HP [email protected]
Now there is only one thing on the scsi and that's just the scanner itself. highlighting these and going to properties shows that it thinks they are HP scsi printers. Reload the scanner software, going through all the hoops of disconnecting, shutting down, restarting w/ scanner not connected, reinstalling software, shutting down connecting scanner, waiting a minute for scanner to be on before turning on the computer, etc. still same thing(s) found attached. *Note no device is found when scanner is not attache... I have a Western Digital WD1200B011 external hard drive with 120Gb of nominal storage capacity.

I just formated my computer and when I attempted to connect the external hard drive, the computer states that the drive K: is not formated. As a consequence, I cannot access my external drive. I certainly don't want to format since I don't want to lose the information stored in it.

I've tried dowloading WD support software. I performed a disk check and apparently it turned out OK, although when looking at the drive properties: 0 bytes of space and 0 bytes of free space is displayed ??!!!!

So I've tried Recovery Data software as well with limited success.. panda recovery, recuva, savemyfiles, etc,...

My question is... is it wise to format the hard drive and later try to recover the data using data recovery software????

I'm guessing that way the computer could recognize the external hard drive, and performing a data recovery could be easier, considering i'm not intending to use the external disc until I get the data back...

Any suggestions.... thanks!!!

Answer:How to find files where the shortcut is moved

A shortcut is simply that. Deleting a shortcut will not remove the actual file. If the shortcut pointed at a file of some type that you created then it should reside somewhere in your Documents folder.Do you remember what the name of the file was? Just type it in the search box that you see after click on the Start orb in the lower left corner of your screen. You can make another shortcut by at least two methods. Right click on the file listing and there should be an option to create a shortcut. The shortcut will be created in the same folder as the original file. Now right click on the shortcut and cut the shortcut. Then paste it where you want it. You can also drag and drop to make a shortcut but there are more rules for that process.

Last night, I came home to find that one of my screens on my PC was grey with loads of white lines through it. I had to force it shut down, and I saw the error "Video Card Error". I have the new AMD Crimson Driver which I've heard can be buggy.

It has done this kind of thing when it over heats but the PC was idle with the screens off so I wouldn't think it got that hot.

Another thing to note was that I swapped from a Pentium G3258 to an i5 4690k, which seemed fine until I got this thing... What do you guys think was the issue?

Thanks,

Sam.
