Preferred Solution: Antivirus program after checking the local disk on the infected files deleted file In

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Restoring outlook express mails is the task for Outlook Express Restore Toolbox. The program has easy to use wizard. The utility works under any system configurations. The program work with .dbx files from any version of Outlook Express.

Hi, Is it safe to use Local Disk (D as my backup storage? i don't have an extra HDD so i want to transfer my files from (C to (D instead but i'm worried Windows might delete them if i do the reinstallation.

Answer:Will my files on Local Disk (D:) get deleted if i reinstall Windows 10

as long as you re-install to partition C - you should be fine with the files on partition D

Hi to all,
i just find out that i have a virus on my laptop, so i install nod32 antivirus 4.0.468.0 and during scanning -without asking for any confirmation- deleted some folders from my laptop. how can i restore them??? one of them where my thesis for university so it is an emergency!!!
any advice would be great!!

Answer:NOD32 antivirus 4-deleted infected files

Careful because you want to make sure you restore the files and not delete them.

Should be right-click NOD32 in the system tray and select Open Window. [Just realized you may have to toggle advanced view to see the Tools option. At the bottom left of the window is an option to change display mode. Click that to get to advanced view.] Then Tools icon. Then choose Quarantine. You should see a list of items that are in quarantine. Click the one you want to restore and select Restore.

I don't have anything in quarantine right now so I can't tell you if any more steps are necessary but I think it will just put it back in its original location. Just be careful to to be sure you don't accidentally tell it to empty quarantine.

I cannot use auto fix file system for errors as the message reads "disk check couldn't be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive acess to some windows files that can only be accessed by restarting". after restarting, it still won't work. computer freezes with "system encountered an error" with an iexplore.exe version 7.0.6000.16574 message. what is going on?

Answer:checking local disk

Hi tsdav and welcome to TSF !

Do you have an XP CD ? Enter the BIOS utility at startup (repeatedly press del or look for some message telling you to press xx to enter setup) and change the boot order priority to CD-rom first. Then boot on the XP CD and press 'R' at the first screen to access the recovery console. From the command prompt type chkdsk c: /R

What's the brand and model of this computer ?

Recently, I went to "My Computer" meaning to check my CD ROM drive, in error, I clicked on "Check Local Disk" it started, so I let it run, it came up "Scan for, & attempt recovery of bad sectors" I said OK,& it went through Phases 1,2,3 & 4 in twenty minutes, then "Disk Checked". I clicked on OK.
Since then, when I boot up, within a minute, the dialler is there, & in next to no time, I'm on-line, before, I had to go to Internet Explorer or Outlook Express before the dialler would appear, tell me it's not a coincidence, what exactly does this facility do? I know the "Scan for....etc., IS self-xplanatory but how? & has anyone else tried this,.....I guess they have.
Also it said "Check Hard Drive & check Local Disk", I'm still learning as you can gather, so what is the difference please?
Another facility was "Automatically fix files system errors" should I have done that too?
Hope this isn't too involved, but it IS all on the same subject

Answer:Checking Local Disk

This function is unrelated to your internet connection. Its used to check the file system on a hard drive partition to look for any potential problems. From your description, none were found, and your problems most likely stem from something else, such as internet connection misconfiguration.

In Disk clean up,compress old files shows 314,714K. After I perform disk cleanup and start disk clean up again, I see all other files show 0 except for compress old file. How can I get rid of the files contained in the compress old files. Pl note I do not want to delete the compress old file option in the disk clean up, just want it to show 0 similar to other files.

Answer:Files cannot be deleted in the compress old file in disk cl.

When old files are compressed by the Disk Cleanup, they are not moved to a special folder. They stay where they've always been but Windows just compresses them so they take up less space."Old files" in that context are any files or applications which you have not used for a long time. So you would have to uninstall all such applications and delete all such files in order to for Disk Cleanup to show "zero" for compressed old files. We cannot tell you what applications to uninstall or what files to delete. Only you know which ones you haven't used for long time.

hello, Scince I have installed the service pack 3, my system xp starts with system check disc everytime? is it normal, or is there something I can do to stop this as it is becoming a time waster and I have not downlaoded any devices or programs scince this update last Tuesday?

Answer:checking local disk at each start after installing SP3

Hi FILEMAN5 and welcome to TSF !

I've moved your post to a new thread, we prefer to keep one thread per user.

What drive does checkkdisk check ? Does it find errors on the drive if you leave it finish ? When you turn the computer off make sure that you wait for Windows to do it and that you don't turn it off manually with the power button.

Leave the scan finish until you are in Windows. Go to start => run and type eventvwr.msc. Go to the application section, click on the title of the source column to sort the sources alphabetically, locate the most recent winlogon entry and double-click it, click on the third button on the right then right-click => paste the information here. Then go to start => run and type cmd. From the command prompt type chkntfs c: (replace c: by the volume letter that's checked at startup if it's not c:) and give us the results.

What antivirus, firewall, antispyware do you use ?

I checked the history but it had been cleared and he had installed limewire. Someone told me there was a way to check files even though they had been deleted, like they are still on the hard drive. I have installed windows 7 on my laptop.. After that the windows file that i have installed is in local disk e but not in local disk c.. Why????? I cannot delete the local disk e because the windows that i use is in the local disk e.. not l.disk c... Now i cannot download any program because the local disk e has full... : ' (
pleasee solve this problemss...

Answer:Why my windows file that i have installed is in local disk e but not in local disk c??

You apparently chose a different partition for the installation, that's it. You can still download whatever you want, you just have to pick a destination folder that's outside of drive E (e.g. drive C). You could also simply create a folder on drive C and map it to the download folder on drive E. I for one would perform a fresh install though and put Windows back on drive C. There are ways to move Windows over to a different location and simply edit the master boot record in order to tell it where to find the boot up files. But it's nothing I would recommend anyone to do, as it can still cause issues with 3rd party applications.

Hi all

My first time on the forum and i'm clueless where to proceed with the above problem. What happened is as follows.

1. I installed 'Virtual CD 5.0.6' on my desktop.
2. I installed 10 virtual drives (labelled drive G to P inclusive)
3. I have an external hard drive (labelled 'Local Disk: L) which was turned off when i installed Virtual CD.
4. When i turned on the external HD it did not show in My Computer (presumably because i had accidently allocated drive L as a virtual drive (see point 2)
5. I have uninstalled Virtual CD (and all 10 virtual drives) but still do not get my External HD icon showing in 'My Computer'
6. When i go into device manager the Maxtor External HD is showing. And when i go to the 'Unplug Eject Hardware' icon on my tool bar the HD shows as a USB Mass Storage Device (but without a letter)

Any suggestions? The Exteranl HD connects via USB and if i unplug/plug back the USB lead it does not show a 'New USB Device'
So i'm assuming that the HD is ok but i need to get it showing again in My Computer.

Thanks in advance

Answer:Accidently deleted my 'Local Disk' icon in 'My Computer'

Think i've sorted it out. I found the following suggestion in the forums

Right-Click My Computer
Select Manage
In the new screen Select Disk Management

I did this and my external HD was there (Without a drive letter) I assigned 'L' back to it, re-opened 'My Computer' and it was there.

Sorry for wasting time, will know where to come in future

I was trying to burn something and it apparently froze my computer. I have about 1 gig of DDR so memory shouldn't have been the issue. So I rebooted once and tried to burn the thing again, no dice , froze again. Then rebooted a second time, my desktop, my local user files were all gone. It was like logging into Windows XP for the first time after a reformat. Though my programs are still intact but my any files saved on the local user profile is gone. My documents, files on I tried to do a system restore. It looked like it worked but it just restored my configuration, though my files did not return. My harddrive capacity seems like nothing was deleted, so maybe its stored somewhere? Can anyone help me out?:amazed:

I hope someone can help me here. I was streaming a movie from my PC to my PS4 when it stopped. I went back to the menu screen in the PS4 app (Plex) and it said the file I was watching was unavailable so I went to my PC and the game that I was playing wasn't responding and all shortcuts on my taskbar wouldn't work, including File Explorer.
When I did open explorer the first thing I noticed was that all my drives were nearly empty (C:/ and D:/ partition) and when I tried to open my network drive (NAS) i was prompted to log in (it normally opens straight up) but almost everything is gone. I had nearly 2TB worth of videos and music.
I'm running Windows 10 64 bit and there was no warning that files were being deleted, it's like they were there one minute and gone the next.
I am currently using BitDefender free version but it now doesn't seem to want to run, it keeps prompting me to restart. And I also can't get Windows Defender to run either.
I am totally stumped on this. I don't understand how I can lose terabytes of data from 3 drives instantaneously.
I'm not holding out much hope of recovering anything, especially from my NAS but I need to know what happened to make sure it doesn't happen again, so any help would be appreciated.

I am debugging an problem with an application which uses ...\AppData\Local\Temp to store its temporary files.

My questions are:

Q1 Does W7 ever automatically delete files from this folder?

Q2 Is each application supposed to delete the files it creates?

Q3 If Q2 is YES, are their known cases where a badly written application goes delete ...\AppData\Local\Temp\*.*? That would cause my problem as it would delete my temporary files.

I ask because the symptom of the problem I am debugging is that the application's temporary files in ...\AppData\Local\Temp suddenly get deleted which causes the application to lose data.

Note that the files being deleted are not "held open by the application" so there is no protection from their being deleted by another program. Also I know that cleaning programs can be scheduled to clean ...\AppData\Local\Temp but I am ignoring that for the moment - I want to know what W7 does.

Answer:How do files in ...\AppData\Local\Temp get deleted?

> Q1 Does W7 ever automatically delete files from this folder?
Not that I have ever seen.
> Q2 Is each application supposed to delete the files it creates?
In my opinion, apps should cleanup after themselves, but many apps do not.
> Q3 If Q2 is YES, are their known cases where a badly written application goes delete ...\AppData\Local\Temp\*.*? That would cause my problem as it would delete my temporary files.
I don't know of any "normal" apps that delete temp files that were created by other apps. Of course, apps that are designed to delete some or all temp files (e.g. CCleaner) will delete temp file created by other apps.
You can use Process Monitor to determine which app is removing the temp file of interest.

Set a filter for Path > contains > AppData\Local\Temp > Include

If desired, you can be more specific with the filter above. You can include one of the files that holds data of interest. If desired, you can add a a filter to include entries for every temp file of interest.

If need be, you can temporarily exclude the app that writes the data to these temp files. Right click on the app name and select exclude from the context menu. That should let you see any other apps that are acting on the temp files of interest.

If you need to let Process Monitor run for a long time, set a local backing file.
(Menu bar > Files > Backing Files...)

If you need more help using Process Monitor, search YouTube or post your questions her... Read more

I transferred photos, through Bluetooth, from my Blackberry to my laptop that is running Windows 7. They appeared in a Temp file (under Local) but have since disappeared. Is there a way to retrieve them? Does this mean I have something on my computer that automatically deletes these files? Thank you for any help, let me know if I need to provide more information!

Answer:Missing local temp files - not manually deleted

Is there a way to retrieve them?Click to expand...

I assume that you've already checked to make sure they are not in the Recyle bin. You could try a Data Recovery program. I've used Recuva and Recuva Portable. Remember that every write to the hard drive is potentially over-writing the deleted files.

Does this mean I have something on my computer that automatically deletes these files?Click to expand...

I do not know. I have a batch file that runs at startup that deletes the contents of %temp%, but I do not think there is a Windows feature to do that automatically.

I'm wondering why you copied/moved them to a temp folder, and why you left them there.

Hi Leema. It's always a good idea to keep a backup copy of any current PST file as well as any other important user files & documents etc.You might be able to retrieve it with recovery software, but even then there's a possibility that it may be incomplete or damaged by overwriting if you carried on using the PC after the file was deleted. I had a user account on my computer that was corrupted (source unknown), and decided the simplest thing was to create a new one and port all of the files over.
Having done so and checked that it was functional, I deleted the old account. However, at least one of my old pst files didn't make the trip. (So much for the idea that ALL files came over!) Is there any way a recovering the old pst file, i.e., is it still out there with the pointers erased, or has it been forever wiped out and I'm left to live without the old emails, etc.?

My computer is setup to use a 120gb SSD for my OS (Windows 7 ultimate 64bit) and a 2Tb hard drive for my program files, user folders etc. I use junction points to link the program files and user files from C:\ to D:\. This normally works like a charm however I recently updated iTunes and it deleted my C:\Program Files (x86) junction point and created a Program Files (x86) folder on the C:\ drive, this completely roots my system as all my Program Files (x86) are stored on my D:\ drive and now my computer can't find them since the junction point has been deleted. How can it do this and most importantly any reason as to why it's doing this? It's an easy fix on my end as all I have to do is put back in my windows installation disk boot from it and remake the junction point but it's a real pain to do it when it shouldn't happen in the first place.

Also after remaking the Junction point I decided to uninstall iTunes and it once again deleted my junction point while uninstalling.

(Note: My Program Files, and User, junction points have worked as normal and have not been deleted just my Program Files (x86) junction point. I am creating my junction points using the command mklink "C:\Program Files (x86)" "D:\Program Files (x86)" /J)

Does anyone have any ideas to why this is happening? Any help is much appreciated.

Hi Guys.,
Need help here.
After installing eScan antivirus, files got deleted from 2 Users Desktop.
Complete D Drive got wiped.
It's installed thorugh console, so users got alert about the installation. And that's it. they not able to see any of the files.
I spoke to eScan, they say AV will not delete any of the system files.
Any idea, what may went wrong?
What will be the option to get this files back?
Thanks in Advance

Answer:Files got deleted after installing Antivirus

Hi bsprakash It could indeed be the fault of eScan, if it had a false positive or another major issue during the installation. Are you able to access its quarantine folder, or at least its logs to see if you can find any files, or traces of deletions in them?

Hey guys, I have a big problem, I had some malware/adware on my laptop. while trying to remove it using Adwcleaner and HitmanPro simultaneously, the task bar and desktop background disappeared. After restarting my pc I had no internet at all (no sign in the task bar, when clicking on network and sharing center it will just load forever), and many windows functions or programs just disappeared or wont work for example my firewall is off and cannot be turned on again, the pc is super slow. I believe that Adwcleaner deleted some system files.
How can I recover these files or repair windows?
I ran sfc /scannow but it told me that the integrity of windows is good. I tried to restore to my latest backup but that was deleted as well. I'm thankful for any help.

I'm trying to write a program that detects file sizes of online images..

So far I've tried to use FileLen to achive this and found out:
1.) It doesn't seem to be possible to get it to work with online files

2.) It doesn't seem to work if you set it to look at an imported image
(eg: Image1.Picture = LoadPicture("C:\Test.jpg")
Text1.Text = FileLen.Image1)

And i'd rather not download the files or use Winsocks unless i REALLY have to,
I am trying to run it to check over 10,000 images so downloading is not really a great option for me

Any help?
[ I do know it'd be easier to write in other programs but i'm quite far into this one! and i don't know any other languages =( ]

Greetings to all the BC fellows!Since yesterday, I've been facing a pretty nasty virus that probably came from here  . So I had 3,07GB free yesterday on my Local Disk (C:) on Windows 7 which I'm using. After I ran the torrent I linked you to before, suddenly the free space became 307 MB and since then it went from a range of 114MB TO 602MB free, each time I refreshed the explorer window. In parallel, I was running MalwareBytes, ESET and Microsoft Security Essentials and only MBAM was able to delete 50 suspicious files, which half of them were some false positives of some network security software I had. After MBAM I rebooted my PC and in hope that I would see again 3,07GB free on my Local Disk, it was 52,40 MB !! And it was going down down down to the point I got worried and shut my PC down. I downloaded TFC and it actually did a tremendous job and left me with 11,2 GB free. But the nightmare doesn't finish here. I restarted my PC again and now it said 8,02 GB free. This happened yesterday. Now I'm left with 7,19 GB . I lost 100MB a few hours ago. I did not download anything and temporary files are nearly 0 MB.  From the looks of those suspicious probs, I'm really sure I'm infected with a rootkit/trojan/keylogger or any other nasty viruses. I also installed Keyscrambler, an antikeylogging software.I've read all the instructions of the forum so in this topic I'm posting here my DDS.txt log that I ran some minutes ago.I hope that I will be able to be helped here a... Hello folks,I have windows xp installed on two different computers. On one of them, when I use "My Computer" to look intomy partitions and drives, xp considers each partition asa "local disk" and when I click on the corresponding icon, the next window shows the content of that partition asa bunch of folders. On the other hand, on my second computer when I use"My Computer", the xp considers each partition anddrive as a "File" and when I click on the corresponding icon, windows ask me "what program should be used to openthat file!!".  Then I have to click on the "Folders" button onthe main toolbar to have a left menu open and then in thatmenu I should press on the corresponding "File" to get it opened and show its content. How can I change the latter setup to be like the former(first) setup?Thank youziloo

Answer:Local Disk vs File!

Has the second system always been that way? What is the drive layout?Have you had malware problems on the second system? Run a full scan with your AV and with MalwareBytes.

Okay, we have Windows XP Home Edition, on a Dell Dimension 8200. When I did a full system scan yesterday with Norton Antivirus, it detected and deleted a 'suspicious' file. When I started my puter this morning, it said the following:Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:\Windows\system32\c_1252.nlsYou can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows setup using the Original Setup CD-ROM. Select r at the first screen to start repair.Well, we don't have our set-up cd anymore, who knows what happened to them.So now I'm stuck, and I hate Norton Antivirus... Should I just take this thing to Future Shop or something? Is there any way to find and load that one file? (I'm now on my Dad's work laptop).

Answer:Norton Antivirus deleted a Windows nls file...

youll never see the file again. unless you can access the program...wait, that wouldnt work. take your harddrive to a shop or somthing. they could probably find that file in the quarintined file from norton. but then youd have to get another box to put your hard drive in. oh well

Hey, thanks for taking the time to view this.

I'm looking for advice/recommendations for finding an automated local file transfer program.

Here's the gist of my problem:

At work I have a root folder that all newly completed work is stored in. The work is for multiple clients with each file containing the name of the client the work is for. At the end of the day I have to manually copy all of client X's files and paste them into his archive folder on another drive. I then have to go back and copy all of client Y's files and post them into his archive folder on the other drive. I have to do this for multiple people. It's time consuming and some days I forget to do it.

I need a program that will automatically run at the end of the day and pull all the files with client X's name in the filename and put them in his folder, and do the same thing with the other clients. Everything is local, no FTP server or web-based stuff.

Unfortunately the program I work with that generates the files only dumps all the work in one root folder. I wish I could point it at multiple folders based on filenames, but I can't.

So, any suggestions? Thanks again for your time.

(Oh, and my OS is Windows 7, but I need something that's compatible with XP since that's what most of my co-workers have and they need the program too)

Answer:Automated local file transfer program?

Hi Dustin

Give Karen's Replicator a go as its free and will do multiple jobs, so you could set it up for various clients and move them to specific backup folders, plus you can schedule the jobs for specific times of the day.

You may also see another backup application HERE that may do what you want.

I have just made a fresh install on a Dell Inspiron Laptop - Windows XP SP 3.
I've installed Kasperky Internet Security on it and run a first full scan. Kaspersky found some trojans and adware on the system and (most likely because I'm not smarter than this two cent program) I've told the anti-virus to delete the "problem" files. So it did, with the result that when trying to open any of the local drives I received this message:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel."

The drives can still be opened by right click and "Explore" or by using the address bar.

I've looked all over the net trying to solve this problem without any success. Some pages lead to the Doug Knox - File Association Fixes, tried that but did not work...Something might be done to fix this from the registry editor but I have no clue what...If anyone can help me and all the others that encountered this problem I would be most grateful. Thank you!

Hi, I am fairly experienced with computers, but for a while now (probably 6 months or more) these files have perplexed me.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 (as of today)
My Computer > Local Disk (C and these files are always there.

They are always changing variations in name and are of no file extension. They are 0 or 1 kb's in size.

It seems to me, the longer I don't keep cleaning them up, the more files are there.

The most worrying thing is that although 1-5 (depending on how many overall files are there) will be deleted (SHIFT+DEL), 3-6 will not be, and I receive the ol'

Error Deleting File or Folder
Cannot delete t148 (example): It is being used by another person or program.

Close any programs that might be using the file and try again.

These files are not NOTICEABLY affecting the performance of my computer, but they are just a worry.

Any help would be appreciated.

EDIT / NOTE: As of immediately now, tfc tfc tfg tfg files delete when selected singularly. t148 still throws the same error.

These are the icons as they appear in My Computer > Local Disk (C

Hello, I use Etrust antivirus. While last using my computer I downloaded the latest updates at that time. A couple days later I rebooted my computer and the realtime portion of my antivirus found the following file and deleted it. 12/18/2008 10:57:41 AM File infection: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ATHCFG10.DLL is Win32/Koutodoor!generic trojan. However the Wifi is my only access to internet in the community I live in. I am wondering two things, 1. How important is this file and how can I get it back?2. If I shut my computer down now that this file is gone will my Wifi work again next time I boot the machine? Thanks for any help with this. Lenovo LaptopR61eXP Pro Service Pack2Internet Explorer 611 b/g Wireless Lan Mini PCI Express Adapter II

Answer:Antivirus deleted a factory file by mistake on R61e.

It appears the is part of a status utility supplied from Atheros.  It looks like it is a utility that just gives you the current connection frequency and speed.  Probably something that shows up in the status bar of XP.  I would guess you are okay without it since you can configure/monitor your wireless connections with the built in XP tools. You may take a look at installing this:  You could also download all available drivers/software from lenovo for wireless for your model and reinstall them all.

Hello everyone,

I started experiencing an odd incident. My movie files from my 2nd internal hard drive (which is a physical hard drive, not a partition that contains my multimedia files) does not play anymore.

My transfer speeds are fine, and I can access my other items like my pictures, documents etc. Just not my movie files. Whenever I double click on a movie file, I see the blue progress bar slowing moving towards the right, and once it finishes, my movies still don't play...

Also, if I right click on my movies, I keep getting the spinning blue circle and then it would say "Windows not responding.." And then if I really wait, it will work for the one movie, but all the other movies won't work..I never had this happen to me...

Any help?

I've used SyncToy for quite some time, but like many I find the 2.1 version to be very slow. It's gotten to where, with the larger and larger disks that are in my system, it really is a little annoying to use. I've looked around and there seem to be more than a few file sync programs. I was hoping folks here could recommend which one has the best combination of absolute reliability, speed, and flexibility when syncing files to a NAS.

I found this wiki page

Answer:cant open my local disk c on my computer or any file on it

To clarify, are you saying that anytime that you click on a file within your drive you get the "this operation has been cancelled due to restrictions on effect on this computer". If so are they only .exe files, or is it any and all?if that is the case, my guess is that you have a malware in residence. I would suggest going into safe mode, downloading malwarebytes and running it. Make sure you run the full scan option. IF malwarebytes fails to run and you get the same message again.try this fix the part of the system that is associated with .exe files.then try again.mike

My grandson deleted his many games from Wildtangent Orb directly from the windows explorer to the recycling bin and emptied it- but they still seem to be on the computer and I can not uninstall the program now because it says there is an error. Is there another way to uninstall the program and all the files?

Answer:Files were deleted now can't uninstall program

The only way to get rid of them all is to reinstall the programs so that the uninstallers can be repaired. Installers place files in multiple locations all over the file system and not just in Program Files, so the uninstall log, or equivalent, is the guide that the uninstallers use to find all those files.

If you can't reinstall all the games, then the next best thing is to manually remove what you can find and then remove the entries from the Add/Remove applet with something like:

Revo Uninstaller

Some of them may have used the Windows Installer. You can use the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility to clean up after those, but be sure to remove only those entries that are for games or programs that no longer exist.

Though System Restore was never meant to be used for this type of thing, you could try restoring to a time prior to the removal and see what gets restored.

"Windows cannot find zplayer.exe. This program is needed for opening files of type 'RM File'. Type in the executable file to be used instead".

I tried making Media Player Classic the default program by clicking 'open with' and ticking 'Always use the selected program to open this file'.. However, this doesnt seem to fix the problem as it still selects zplayer.exe as the default program for RM files.

...have disappeared, leaving my shortcuts looking like I uninstalled them. All deleted programs are still showing in control panel/programs and features, but with default windows icons next to the titles. I re-downloaded malwarebytes yesterday and installed to C:\Program Files (x86) again and did a quick scan and it came up with nothing. Spybot yesterday also only showed 'IWinGames' which I fixed. I re-installed photoshop yesterday as well to C:\Program Files (x86). Spybot today shows nothing.

Today, photoshop has gone again, likewise, malwarebytes again, and also some other programs: kies backup and restore, pinnacle studio, driver sweeper and tridef 3D software.

It occurred to me that every single one of the deleted programs were installed to C:\Program Files (x86), and nothing has been deleted that is installed to C:\Program Files, my E drive or my F drive. None of my other spyware programs and microsoft security essentials are installed to C:\Program Files (x86), so they have not been deleted.

Which begs the question, why are programs disappearing from C:\Program Files (x86) and C:\Program Files (x86) only?

As I type, I'm currently doing a full scan with malwarebytes on just my C drive and so far it... Read more

The Exploit:Java/Blacole.ES certainly may be part of the issues. Below my sig is a link to Super AntiSpayware, dowload, update it and do a full scan with it too.
Check for updates to your Java install. Better is not to have Java installed. Also check for updates to Adobe Flash and Shockwave if you have those.

I recently just started playing the game elder scrolls oblivion on my computer and I wanted to try mods so I started using them. Something went wrong and my game became corrupted so I couldn't play so I decided to delete the mods and play the game by its self. That didn't work so I deleted all my files for oblivion before uninstalling and now every time I put in the disk when I try to play it, it says files don't exist but when I try to install it, it says they're on my computer. I've looked through my entire computer and it only shows up in the uninstall section of control panel I have no idea what do, can any help me solve this? my system is windows 8.

When I performed a routine backup from my hard drive to an external drive which had existing files on it, I found that the backup had deleted all the individual files on that external drive. The folders are still there but there are no files in them.
So now I have lost years of data.
Does anyone know what I can do?
I know how to restore regular deleted files but the properties view of the folders say there are no previous versions.
Is there anyway to undo the whole backup?

Answer:Win 7 backup program has deleted files

Hello and welcome pinnate. First always good idea to load system specs for us as it makes life so much easier tracking down problems and we shall probably need yours anyway if the problem is going to be difficult.
So - System Info - See Your System Specs
Mate two things you can try one is to use one of the data recovery software's and one that comes to mind is Recuva < download from piriform or another little fix I worked out some time ago which works for me at least and there is a tutorial in here using a bootable stick to the same end but I have not tried that yet my little ditty works fine for me anyway

Make a bootable Ubuntu disk

Set the BIOS to boot from the optical when the machine boots it will show you a screen with TRY or INSTALL > select TRY

When it is finished - it takes very little time you will get a screen like in the pic .

Open the drive you want > User and dig down until you get to the data / settings you may be able to copy / paste the material you want to an external source or other installed drive doing this.

I am not sure if it will but I have recovered tons of data etc using this method both on "dead" or just plain drives that you cannot get data from using Windows.

Hi Guys!I have a rather quick question. By chance can you retrieves files deleted by combofix? turns out i ran combofix on a infected computer that had the ACT! software install'd by Sage. I believe it detected it as a false positive so it automatilly deleted everyone under the ACT! directory. Turns out ACT! is important software I required, and I don't have the CDs for it. I'm hoping there is a simple command or something i can do to retrieved those files. As a last alternative i will run recovery software, but maybe you guys know an easier way. Edit: Moved topic from XP to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

Answer:ComboFix deleted ACT! program files

Hello VCORE.Please note that ComboFix is not for use without supervision in case things such as this occur.Post a new topic in the HijackThis Logs and Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal Forum. Include in that topic a copy of the ComboFix log (C:\ComboFix.txt).Please do not post any logs outside of the forum mentioned above. My os:win xp service pack 3

Answer:Accedentally deleted an xp program file

First backup all of the files you can't live without using an Ubuntu Live CD saving them to a USB HDD/Flash Drive.
Then Boot off of the Windows Disc Or download the Recovery Console ISO. Burn it to CD with IMGBurn Boot off of the CD and get to the Recovery Console. Here type chkdsk /R and press enter. The Check Disk utility will try and fix any file errors.
You can also download the ISO image for Seatools or Drive Fitness in my signature and burn the image to a CD using IMGBurn also in my signature and boot off of the newly created CD and run the Quick and Advanced tests on the HDD to test the integrity of the drive.

Hello there,

Have a laptop from a friend of a friend that I have looked at. It had the E-Set antivirus program on there that I have managed to remove through the use of RKill and Malwarebytes.

The laptop wouldn't boot because of the E-set Antivirus program and required a startup repair before it would even go into Safe Mode to allow removal of E-Set.

I then set about applying Windows Updates, running scans, removing the McAfee expired subscription and placing on Comodo Firewall and AVG Free.

Then I went about updating various programs to latest versions.

I'm thinking it is now relatively clean as a result, but thought it prudent to check in here to be sure.

I have followed the ReadMe and so attach the logs to this post.

Thanks in advance...

Here are a couple of logs. First thing off, I ran GMER, and it did not find any modification it said, so log file was blank. I ran DDS, and also HijackThis. Log have been posted below. I had to have gotten rid of some of it with Malwarebytes, and avast antivirus, and I even ran SmitREM. There is still something on the computer though, but it brings up these little green logos down in the taskbar, and says I have a virus. Executables cannot be opened up, as this fake flags them as infected. I had to run everything from safe mode. Also forgot to note that the computer is unusable until this is fixed, as no programs can be open EDIT: Posts merged ~BPBlarrggg, cant edit this post now Anyways, update on the situation. I turned on the computer, and the rogue program does not seem to be showing up, although I'm pretty sure it still there. Also, it appears that I cannot connect to the internet. I was recently infected with a fake "anti-virus" program disguised as windows protection. This program disabled my internet, and would constantly pop up with warnings about various other infections on my computer. It would warn that the internet was disabled for my protection. It would also solicit payment for "upgrade" to have the infections and threats removed even when I disabled the internet connection. I've managed to "system restore" to a week prior to the infection with a friend's help, which allowed me to download the programs and run the scans. I also scanned my c drive, with avast and it found some infections which I deleted. Below are are my logs.

Hi All,

Long time last visit 18 Aug 2015 23:19 Slartybart Re installing 4 tb drive.....

For those that remember...I took out the 1 tb drive from my HP pavilion 23 that was running windows 10 it was fully working apart from not a lot of room left due to mainly photos, docs etc., and swapped with the above 4 tb drive which I needed help with all still working fine........

Today I thought that I would update the windows 10 on it, I took out the 4 tb and replaced with the old 1 tb drive, it started up OK with windows 10, but nothing else, all my old photos and docs all gone....I was keeping this as a backup...
Silly question..Does Windows 10 delete all files if not used?? if not where I my files??? Window.old is still there if I changed this back would I get all my photos etc. back??

Thanks Len..

Answer:Files deleted on old disk

Windows doesn't delete unused user files - in normal operation.
No, Windows.old is not a backup of your user files. It's there to revert the OS (not your user files) to the old version if necessary.

Did you copy or move your user files from the 1Tb to the 4Tb?

Have you actually logged in as the same user - assuming your files were in the default library folders, that is.

A far far better way to back up your system, data, everything is to use disk imaging routinely.
And there are many excellent ways to back up key data.

When trying to copy files from my NAS drive to my local disk, exe, zip, and pdf (and other types) will not copy. I get a popup titled "Item Not Found" with content that says "Could not find this item". txt files (and others) will copy just fine.

Sounds like firewall or AV or permissions right? I've turned off the Windows Firewall and turned off Windows Security Essentials and still have the problem.

I can copy the files to a local USB memory stick, and then to my local disk, with no problem (except for having to go through the intermediate step of the memory stick). I can also _open_ some of the files (Reader for .pdf, WinExplorer for zip (and can even copy files from the zip to the local drive!) and run .exe?s). But some files won?t open either (like .docx or xlsx), showing similar error popups.

Some pdf files (and other types of files) on the NAS drive will copy OK. If I move WontCopy.pdf to the same dir as WillCopy.pdf (on the NAS), it still won't copy to my local disk. If I try to _copy_ WontCopy.pdf to the same dir as WillCopy.pdf (note: copy vs move), it will not copy to that NAS location but gives same error.

If I look at the properties of the two files (willcopy.pdf and wontcopy.pdf) they look virtually identical. Owner is "Everyone"

This is a very fresh install of Win7/64 home (with all updates (including SP1)). Another older computer has the same problem, but it also has a fresh Win7/64 install (by me). The NAS is a Synology... Read more

Answer:Oops accidentally deleted program files - help!

Recovery of your operating system will be difficult with windows 98. Your friends suggestion might work, and be easier to do. But be aware of the pitfalls before you start. Firstly, when re-installing do not allow windows to re-format the drive or create new partitions and ignore dire warnings about installing two operating systems on the same partition. Instruct the install program to install windows 98 into the existing folder on the main partition overwriting the existing files

This pc has two hard drives and I was cleaning (deleting unwanted files) on the secondary one which only contains data files. Than to my surprise I launched Adobe Photoshop CS2 a day later only to find it looking for missing files (as in the program won't even launch). It than occurred to me that there was an ''Adobe'' folder I deleted by accident. :cry

I can't believe I made such a beginner mistake but I haven't met anyone that installs programs on a secondary drive in ages. Don't really need the darn program anymore. I had defragmented the hdd a few times after that. Don't know if that matters.

Is there a way for me to uninstall this program now?

Or get the files back?

I rather go the easy route, whichever is better.

A friend was cleaning her PC when she accidentally deleted DirectSound as well. Because of this, no sound files work anymore on her speakers. How does one go about remedying this?

I'm thinking of uninstalling the entire directx9c bundle and reinstalling hoping that directsound would be installed again, but I'm having a heck of a time trying to uninstall DirectX on her Windows XP machine. I've already downloaded the latest DirectX file off of the microsoft downloads page:

but the problem is that when I double click it, it doesn't seem to reinstall or uninstall the latest DirectX over the broken one (the one that's missing the directsound files) on her computer. I'm not even really sure if I'm doing the right thing. Maybe a file recovery program would do better?

What can I do? Any answers would be a big help. Many thanks to all. The more detailed the better.

I have a Dell D-600 with Windows XP (SP-3).I ran Combofix, but when I did, I noticed it taking much longer than normal to run the program (about 4 hours). I knew something was wrong for it taking such a long time, but I was also concerned that if I killed the program while running during mid-process, it might have caused me additional problems, so I let it run it's course.I was extremely dismayed to see when Combofix had finally finished, my computer was now seriously messed up, as many system, program & personal files & folders were deleted and quarantined. Now most programs wouldn't open or run, shortcuts on my desktop wouldn't work, then Windows Internet Explorer wouldn't open as that folder also became a casualty in this. I then tried using System Restore, but it was unsuccessful.I got on website (borrowed another computer to get online), then searched and reviewed the forums regarding this Combofix bug problem. I found several topics on the problem with Combofix like I have, but the most similar in the criteria was "" (a copy of this topic is below), which basically said this problem can be fixed by downloading and running a special tool designed for this bug called CFDQ-UsrPrf.exe.Forum posting (topic 290138) ComboFix problems and resolution for legitimate files being deleted:Posted 24 January 2010 - 09:41 PM As many of of you know ComboFix has been pulled due to... EDIT: You should first check to see if your camera manufacturer offers a program to recover files.
If you use the free from here: Recuva - Standard
Be sure to watch for offers of toolbars and other bundled software and refuse if offered.

I want to create recovery DVD, but I can not use Recovery Disc Creator Because Avira removed the executable file. How do I get it?

Thank you in advance

Answer:My antivirus Avira has deleted the Recovery Disc Creator executable file

I use Avira so long now and I?ve never experienced something like this. It is pretty bad situation now.

Toshiba recovery disc creator cannot be downloaded and all you can do now is to reinstall OS using HDD recovery option and then when notebook has ?factory settings? again you will be able to start this tool and create recovery disc.

Out of curiosity, which notebook model do you have exactly?

Hi, The phrase in the title of this post is what I get no matter what is being downloaded to my machine. Updates for Adobe, CC cleaner and every possible file or bit of software I attempt to download results in the same above phrase after it appears to download (counts up to 100%), then shows that. I've checked out google search results and searched the forum here and I may be in the wrong area of the forum? Possibly a security/virus/spyware issue? In any case, any help that can be provided would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much for reading. Selectrick

I recently downloaded starry night which is a program that you can use to look at space features and stuff, but I had to uninstall it becuase it was taking up to much space on my computer, well now I can't delete the sucker and I'm constantly barraged by "this program is being used by another person or program", so I unistalled those programs and yet it still wants to stay, what do I do?

Answer:Certain file inside a program can't be deleted.. no matter what I do..

Before you delete anything else that you might actually want, try a system restore to before you had starry night installed.

If this does not help then post details of your system, the files you want to eliminate and the exact error messages.

The last update:
October 15, 2011
Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538242)

After this update, a program was uninstalled (gone with no trace). The program had a screensaver option and I noticed it when the screensaver came up blank. Its shortcut was no longer on the desktop.

Two files I had created October 12th, and was working on were deleted.
I don't know if any other files were deleted.

The update before was October 11, 2011

This appears to be a rollback not unlike a system restore. Any ideas?

Answer:Update uninstalled program and deleted file

Welcome to the Windows Seven forum.

Did you install the package yourself? That update came through MS Update back in June. A previous release was in April. Perhaps you deleted some files or did a restore. Another posibility is that you loaded/installed a program with old redistributable files.

After recently installing a copy of Norton Utilities I tried the Unerase facility of the programme and was very surprised to see a couple of thousand text files appear. These files were numbered numerically and when I unerased some of them and read the contents I found that besides the computer coding on them (squares, dots etc) they seemed to contain details of all my computer activities and sites that I had visited on the Internet. The Internet details seemed in some cases to show the text that may have been written on some of the Web Pages I had visited. I run 12Ghosts Wash programme which seems effective but for some reason the files that are on my hard drive are not being shredded when I run this program.
I would be grateful for any information on what these files are and what action that can be taken (if any) to stop them occurring.

Many thanks
