Internet working fine but no connection through ethernet

Question: Internet working fine but no connection through ethernet

As mentioned in the title, my internet is working fine. spent some time onthe phone with my service provider and he said everything is fine and suggested i plug into another computer and sure enough it works without issue. So everything using wifi works but my desktop will not connect with the ethernet cable.
I just get issues saying problems with dns server.

Attached is the ipconfig /all as it seems to be the first thing asked for from other post i have been reading through.
any help would be greatly appreciated as i would rather not go to the extreme of reformatting.

Preferred Solution: Internet working fine but no connection through ethernet

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am trying to connect to my Asus RT N66U using a TP Link AV1200 Powerline. I can connect my PC to the router fine over wifi, and the ethernet over the powerline is working fine for my android TV box (powerline status lights all look good too). But on my PC attempting to use the ethernet just gives 'No Network Access'. Does anyone know where I am going wrong?

This morning I turned on my computer to notice that it was missing several drivers, including graphics, keyboard and USB controller. I have since fixed all of this yet my Ethernet connection will not show on available networks (I have no WiFi card in my desktop). I ran an ipconfig and attatches the results. The modem is fine, and the cable works in my laptop without fault. When plugged into the desktop it flashes green but no connection available

Looking for some help here as I'm stuck.
3 year old Toshiba laptop (Satellite P100). Ethernet and wireless both worked fine with XP. Since upgrading to Windows 7, my wireless is fine, but I can't connect to the internet via Ethernet. Other computers in the house are connected to my router (linksys WRT54GL) and work fine. I've set up an IP address manually (like I have on the other computers) with no luck. Automatically setting it will not work either. I'm using just TCP/IPv4 (v6 is unchecked, older router doesn;t support it). I've played with just about everything I can think of and still no luck.
The strange thing is that when I try to load a website, the data seems to trickle in for a second. For example, going to google.com, it will look like its loading, but nothing will come up. Then just the text will come up after maybe 20 seconds, but the logo (ie graphics) will not. It will just hang there and time out. Any normal webpage I visit will just sit on a blank screen then Firefox will report it's "done" at the bottom, but nothing will be displayed.

I also cannot log-on to my router, same problem, it will not load the web interface page, and will just time-out.

Under the "Network and Sharing" center everything appears to be fine. It will say I am connected to my network, and the diagnostics will not find anything wrong. Still, no internet.
Tried bypassing the router and plugging directly into the cable modem, and this do... Read more

I've been having this problem for awhile now. I open programs such as Itunes, Bit torrent, even DVD's with internet extra's and they all pop up with check to see if you are connected to the internet. My internet is working fine. I can Google up a storm no problem. I have Windows Firewall on however all of these programs are allowed thru so it's not that. I have no Proxy settings in Firefox. Any ideas? Please?

Answer:Programs saying check internet connection when internet is working fine.

Hello, if it were me seeing that on my computer , I would update and run full scan of Malwarebytes Antimalware, and also SuperAntiSpyware , and see if I had any spyware or malware , I would also run my Anti Virus program. You can get Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware free.

Hi guys I could use anyone's help. The problem is with my desktop pc. I connected it to the modem using a new ethernet cable but I can't access the net. To test the cable, I plugged it to another pc and I got no problem connecting to the net. When I borrowed another cable from a friend and tried it on my desktop, it connected directly to the net. Which means that there is no problem with either the cable that I bought and the NIC of my pc.

The message that I get when I use the cable that I bought on my pc is "Unidentified Network". Can anybody help me out with this?

Answer:No Internet connection even if cable and NIC is working fine

You should tell Windows firewall that's your new home network. I don't see why a new cable would make your computer think that your old internet connection was something new.

Firefox won't connect to the internet or load any of the pages. The internet connection is fine. IE is working, though it does get a bit slow sometimes and I can't seem to download anything.
I've checked:
1.)Anti-Virus software - no threats found
2.)Firefox Setting: It's directly connected to the internet; no manual proxy setting.
3.)Firewall is not blocking Firefox
Any ideas what might be the problem?

I am having issues with my web browser that I hope someone can help me with. When I open IE or Firefox, it takes an EXTREMELY long time to open a webpage (about an hour).

When I open a web browser in IE, it hangs at "connecting" for about 20-25 minutes. It then moves to "waiting for http://(whateverwebsite)" for another 20-25 minutes. Then it displays the website, but hangs for another 15-20 minutes. When I open a webpage in Firefox, nothing happens at all.

I know there is nothing wrong with my Internet connection because I can still download updates at a normal speed and I have a couple of online games I can still play normally. I can also still access the Internet fine on other computers (hence this posting). The only issue is with the web browser is on my laptop.

My web browsers were working fine last night and the only change I have made was downloading McAfee. I contacted McAfee and of course they said this is not caused by their software. I conducted a virus scan with McAfee and PCTools and everything is normal.

One thing I just noticed is if I open a web browser and disconnect the Internet connection, the web browser will still go through the steps I listed in the second paragraph and display the webpage an hour later. So the webpage is still being downloaded at a normal speed, it just takes forever to be displayed.

I have already tried restarting both my computer and modem. I have also conducted the following that was posted by JohnWill:

I am running a pretty new PC with Windows 7. This weekend I updated Itunes to the latest version, and did a restart. After the restart, I was unable to connect to any website, using IE or Chrome. I was also unable to update anything (like my malware software definitions). However, my Internet connection is just fine. Under network connections everything looks good, and I am able to connect to an online chess server and play chess games, so I know there's no issue with my connection.

Now, I run my malware program and it finds and fixes 7 issues. I assume this must be what's causing the problem. After another restart, a second malware scan comes up clean, same with my virus software. However, still unable to connect to anything online other than the chess server.

Finally, I pull an older computer out of the basement, disconnect the cat 5 going to the new computer, and connect it up to my older computer. I was surprised to get the very same issue -- I was unable to connect to any website, but the Internet connection is fine. So, I have to assume that the malware was never the issue, unless it possibly reset some settings with my router or modem? The old and the new computer were never connected in any way, so it's not possible that the malware infected the old computer.

Any suggestions? I have been struggling with this for a couple of days now and really could use some help. Thanks!

Answer:I can't visit any website, even though my Internet connection is working fine.

Hi
My Name is Kaushal and I work for social media and community Team at Dell.
It seems like it's a connectivity issue with the computer.
1: Try to turn off the modem for 30 sec and disconnect the Ethernet cable from computer and restart, once the commuter starts you have the desktop window up and turn on the internet modem and once all the lite on the modem gets stable, after that please check the internet.

2: The best option would be to restart your computer and TAP F8 and it will take to black windows where in , You can select "safe mode with networking".
Once the computer starts then check the internet connection and if it works fine it means it could be something in the computer which is blocking the internet. Like an Anti Virus like MacAfee, Norton, Avast

3:If these 2 doesn’t solve the problem as you mentioned you tried the second computer, it Also doesn’t work in that case please get in touch with your internet service provider.
You will surely have the solution
Thanks

Hi there...thanks in advance for anyone's help/suggestions.

Background: I have an HP laptop, running Windows XP and IE 7, and use a wireless router. I recently had issues with the Vundo virus. I followed the forums here in MajorGeeks and no longer have any issues (at least I don't think so since the _helper.dll files are no longer popping up, and the virus scans come out clean).

Problem: When I'm using this laptop, and open IE, the internet connection is strong and fast for about 5 or 10 minutes. After that, the connection is completely out, although the wireless router icon suggests the connection strength is "excellent."

My other laptop (running Vista) works just fine during all of this, with no connection disruptions (so I know it's not the router, or Comcast causing the problem).

What I've tried: I installed the new beta IE 8, thinking perhaps that might fix something. It did not. Tonight, I will reinstall the network card drivers to see if that helps.

I'd love anyone's thoughts on why the internet connection is going out on me. It is not until I restart the computer that I can browse the web (and ony for a short amount of time). Could it be that I still have virus issues?? If so, any suggestions?

Thanks!

Hey guys, I already searched but the search kept crashing. I found one closed thread on this subject using google search but it didn't contain any information on how to solve the problem. Anyway...

After the computer has been on for a while, the internet just stops working. The problem is the same in both firefox and ie. Browser will try to search for one split second and then stops and says done with a blank page. When I reboot the problem is fine. Instant messaging programs, if connected, will still function after the internet goes out.

The problem is NOT my wireless or network card, and i am still connected to the network and everything is fine. resetting the router doesn't help, nor does flipping off the wireless switch and flipping it back on.

nothing helps except restarting the computer. I really don't want to reformat over this. Any ideas? Thanks!

Greetings

I'm not really sure where to post this, please move if needed.

My internet connection is fine, programs such as MSN work, but when I go to either Internet Explorer it displays the 'Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage' notice on every page that I try to connect to, also displays a 'Page loading error' notice on every page that I try to visit.

The problem appeared to start when I installed an update for Firefox, and at the time I had an old version of IE which worked fine, although the updated Firefox did not display any pages, I decided to update to IE8, because the version I had installed was pretty ancient, after which IE also began to display this problem.

I have fiddled with my firewall settings, to no avail.

Incidentally I am now using an old version of MSN explorer, which works to display webpages (which is how I am managing to post this!) I am guessing it is something to do with the updates, although I'm not an expert.

Any clues as to what I can do to fix it (I don't want to be stuck with this awful MSN browser!)

Thanks in advance
Laurens

Answer:Internet connection working fine, browsers can't connect to any sites.

Try opening a command window (type cmd into yor run box and click ok)
Then type 'netsh winsock reset' and hit enter.
You should get a message 'successfully reset winsock catalogue' or similar.
then restart your computer

Need quite a bit more info, before any suggestions can be made.

The “Johnwill” need to know about your environment questionnaire:

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

What country are you located in.
Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
What is the expected Upstream/Downstream speed for your ISP Connection?
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Make and model of your computer.
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms? Have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way? Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?

If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

Hello,

My gf said that the power flickered a couple of times today. I have everything plugged in to a surge protectors but I am honestly at a complete loss at what to do. Any help is appreciated greatly.

Thanks

Answer:No Internet Connection/Ethernet Port Lights are not working

Well; even with surge protectors; it is possible the ethernet card took a minor hit. But one thing you could try is to completely uninstall the ethernet adapter from the device manager, reboot, and let windows re-detect it and reinstall the drivers for it; that way hopefully there will be a fresh install of the adapter. Give that a shot and see what happens.

For the past 3 days I've not been able to sustain an ethernet connection from my laptop. I've had a tech out from my ISP to check the router and it's fine. So with everything updated and working properly, my connection keeps dropping in and out. Wireless works just fine though. I'm thinking it could be a software problem but I'm darned if I can figure out where. Please find my system info as requested below.

Hi, I am using the Actiontec MI-424WR or MI424WR router that I am provided by verizon. My service provides 15 Mbps down 2 Mbps up. When I first got the service earlier this month tests done at speakeasy showed 15/1.7 which was normal. The past week or so, my connection has deteriorated to being now about 300-700k/1.7. I still get full upload speed, but I don't get anywhere near the download speed I should be getting. My mother's computer which is on a wireless connection gets 10 mbps which is good for wireless. I have also put a wireless card in my laptop which gets 10 mbps also. I still can figure out though why a wired connection would have issues. I tried searching all the help forums, but I cant find an answer. I am not sure whether its my laptop's ethernet port or the router's ethernet, I have checked all 4 ports on the router.

thanks

I am on a Win 7 based computer. New apt, new internet connection. Old router.
Connects to net fine with an ethernet cable.
Connects to the wifi signal (strong signal) with password authentication BUT no internet access.
All my laptops are experiencing the same issue- so it does not appear to be related to the computer.
I then connected the ethernet cable to a Linksys E2000. Again, good signal, clear connection BUT no internet access.
What can I do??
IPCONFIG/ALL>myTCP.txt did not produce any results in DOS (why??)
Thanks in advance.....

I mainly use Google Chrome as my internet browser and about a week ago it started acting up. It would get stuck on a page or would repeatedly send me back to my homepage. I was able to use Skype, Ventrillo, World of Warcraft, etc. My AVG wasn't catching any problems, but the problem was happening. I would restart the computer and the browser would work fine for a little while, then stop.

Following CNET's advise, I installed CCleaner and Malware Software and ran them. No problems detected.

Browser problem has gotten worse!

I found a similar forum here. Browsers not working, internet connection is fine And tried everything that was suggested to that user, but still no luck with my computer.

I spent an hour+ with AVG Tech Support trying to resolve the issue to no prevail. Please help me!!!

Answer:Browsers Not Working - Internet Connection Fine - Tried "Everything"

Given that a reboot seems to at least temporarily fix the problem and you can connect with other protocols Im leaning towards network or AVG

What were the results when you cleared you cache (suggested in the other thread)?

Have you tried another browser to confirm/deny it is Chrome?

Have you tried with AVG disabled?

Have you tried it in safe mode (F8) with networking?

I have an Ideapad U330 that will not get online using ethernet in windows. Before you ask, no it isnt my router. When I use an Ubuntu bootable disk, the ethernet works fine and I can surf the web without issue. I reformatted and installed windows 7 x86 (It had windows XP previously and the ethernet didnt work there either), installed all the drivers, and updated the BIOS, the ethernet still does not work while the wireless works fine. I thought this was a hardware issue until the ethernet worked with no issue in Ubuntu.

I'm sure this has been asked 1000 times but I cannot seem to find my exact issue anywhere. Hopefully this helps myself and anyone who runs into this issue.

To start, I have Windows 7 Professional 64bit. Everything worked 100% fine with absolutly no issue and then.... I moved. Now we have Fios instead of Comcast.

Now to the issue. When I have the ethernet connected I cannot get internet access but I have full network access. I went out and purchased a new wirless card and wirless works just fine. I tested 2 different cables, recrimped both of them and nothing. I have activity on the PC and the Router so I am sure they are good.

I have tried everything I have read online, Updated Realtek Family PCI Ethernet drivers from MSIglobal. Disabled/Enabled. ipconfig /flushdns, /release and /renew. I went as far as Backing up and reformating the Hard Drive and before reinstalling the backup I tested it and nothing. Restored my backup file and yep.. nothing.

Its kind of frustrating. I'm not exactly and expert but i am in no way a novice either. This one has me stumped. Im thinking maybe it is a windows service that is not set to start correctly but I figured I would creat a post while I am at work and maybe have and answer to test before I hunt through the services tonight.

Any advice is greatly appreciated

Thanks

My Y500 decided it couldn't receive internet on any connection today. It would connect to any network but it would say that there was no internet. I plugged my computer directly into the modem with an ethernet cable and it still said there was no internet. My router was sending out 5Ghz wifi fine and I was using several other devices on the network successfully. Any idea what could be wrong? I thought it would be my wireless card, but wouldn't I still be able to receive internet through my ethernet port then? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help. I don't want to have to buy a new laptop just because this silly nonsense. Hello,My name is Vladan and I have had a problem occur yesterday. My internet stopped working.I immediately tried my phone's wireless connection and saw that it was working fine, so I tried laptop wireless and it too was working. When I plug in my network cable it stops working. My ethernet internet connection status shows that Ipv4 and Ipv6 have "no internet accsess". It's not just my laptop's wired internet that stopped working, it's the whole network I have in my apartment consisting of two more computers who also lost their wired-ethernet internet accsess. I suspect something is wrong with my router since it relays my internet but wireless works fine so I'm stumped. When I plug in my cable it shows limited connectivity.I have tried ipconfig /release - /renew, I have tried netsh winsock reset and netsh int ip reset log.txt I have tried (netsh winsock reset catalog), also I tried (netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log) and it said the following ::::::Resetting Interface, OK!Resetting Neighbor, OK!Resetting Path, OK!Resetting , failed.Accsess is denied.Resetting, OK!Restart the computer to complete this action.::::I don't know what is this "failed and accsess is denied" but it might be the problem.I have rebooted my router several times but also with no results. Answer:Network troubleshoot - Ethernet (wired) stopped working, Wireless works fine.

Did your ISP give you this router such as your leasing it etc? If so contact them for a replacement. If you own this router then I'd try factory reset button to set it back to factory default. If that doesn't cure this then buy a new router. They are pretty cheap these days.Your router could have been hacked, the access denied is strange!

I am seeking advice here to solve a problem with internet connection on my laptop.
The laptop (Thinkpad X61 running 32 bit Vista) seems to be ok to connect to my router, which is connected to a cable modem. Internet is also connected on the base level (more details below). However Internet Explorer (or firefox, opera) cannot find any web page, and Mozilla Thunderbird email program cannot connect to email server.
I am decently ok with computers, so I have run some checks myself. This is not a problem of router or cable modem, as my other computers can access internet through the same router and modem. Also, the laptop gets an IP address from the router and can connect to shared resources on other computers within the same network.
The laptop also finds outside addresses and get a response when I run ping command, e.g. ping www.google.com or ping www.yahoo.com, suggesting that the connection to DNS server is fine at the base level.
I was suspecting that windows firewall, my Symantec antivirus or VPN is creating the problem. But the problem persists after I disabled firewall and the antivirus software and deleted VPN connection.
One important thing to mention is that this problem starts when after a software install, which I removed afterwards. I tried to run netsh reset by "netsh winsock reset catalog", "netsh int ipv4 reset myreset.log" and "netsh int ipv6 reset myreset.log" and restart. Still does not work.

I have been using a 50ft ethernet cable until I got a 100ft cable for internet because wifi in my room sucks. The 50ft worked great but as soon as I set up my 100ft it doesn't work. You have two ethernet adapters, right? Are you using the same one now as you did with the 50' cable? If so, don't know why it would make a difference, but try the previously used port.

So after trying to share files in my network I created a Homegroup with my other Windows 10 computer - where the Internet works fine.

The problem computer is just a media center designed to run Kodi. I had no user account yet. So I created a password for my "default" account and changed the computer name.

After a lot of reboots and password changes I managed to connected both computers and am able to share files.

However internet connection ceased to work.

Edge, Internet Explorer, App store, Windows system (I tried to connect to iDrive or create a user with my msn credentials and it reports no internet connection).

However, there's no "triangle" warning on the task bar. Network diagnostics reports it's all good, local private network has internet access.

I tried uninstall driver, reboot, tried to reset DNS tables = via netsh and other tips I've found here. Nothing.

No internet connection, but local network is fine, and every other computer in the house has internet connection just fine.

Answer:Windows reports Internet connection is fine, but no real connection

Having similar issues. It's actually making me want to go back to Windows 7 I'm that annoyed with it.
I haven't actually used the internet since I upgraded to w10!!!!!

I have a connection to my router but the "no internet" message next to it. All other devices that are connected work fine.

I used to be able to have a wired connection and my PC would find it and connect straight away. No password required. WiFi worked just as well with w7. But since the upgrade I've not been able to update drivers, windows or do any web search at all.

All troubleshooting within windows gets me no where.

Someone must have a solution to these issues. There are tons out there if you 'google' them.

Any help to this or the original post much appreciated

My PC with windows 7 is the only computer with issues in the house. Ethernet works perfectly but wifi doesn't even when I don't have the ethernet hooked up. The wifi says it is connected but browsers, steam, and Itunes don't work. I have Bitdefender A/V and already tried uninstalling it, no change. I also uninstalled steam and Itunes with still no change. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for the wireless adapter. I tried looking and I don't recall downloading or installing anything around the time the problem started. Before I try replacing the adapter itself, I was hoping for help here since I saw a very similar problem in another thread.

So this morning, out of nowhere, the wired internet connection on my desktop pc stopped working like normal. I'm 'connected' but every webpage just hangs on loading and occasionally after 10+ minutes I'll get the tiniest fraction of the site loaded. So there is some sort of connection going through but there's obviously a problem.

Wireless works fine on all the other laptops in the house, I've tested other ethernet cables to my desktop pc to no avail and I've tested wired connections from my laptop and they work fine.

I ran a scan for viruses/malware etc 2 days ago and came up clean, but today I ran one and found 3 malware infections. Two were infected registry keys, which seem were infected by PUP.Optional.SilentInstall.A and PUP.Optional.SProtector.A. The third was a infected file 'conetinuetioSaVee/uninstall.exe' which was infected by the above PUP.Optional.SilentInstall.A. They are now quarantined and removed.

I'm guessing my internet problem could have been caused by these infections changing some settings somewhere which took affect after I shut down my desktop last night. Now they are removed, but these settings are still wrong. I'm unable to log into my router from my desktop, it just hangs, but I'm able on my laptops. I'm running Windows 7 and using a Netgear router DGN2000.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I'm stumped!

Hence, I'm guessing that it was a rotating, temporary yet minor issue on the side of the servers of Facebook.

Hello,

I've got a Dell laptop here that isn't functioning properly. I can't get this to work for the life of me! I am currently using this laptop with a different hard drive, it's the install on the SSD that doesn't work. I know that the quick fix would be to simply reload windows, but I don't want the quick fix.

Basically, laptop works with Windows 7 install on a hard drive, no issues. On the SSD, where the ONLY applications loaded are Office 2013 and Firefox (and all the latest updates), the internet does not work (I can ping yahoo.com and get a response, so DNS is fine). The problem persists on IE and Firefox. I have no AV software other than MSE, and the problem persists in Safe Mode w/ networking. The hosts file is clean. The internet worked on the computer just fine when I loaded it, I hadn't used the SSD in a while and when I popped it in, the internet wasn't working. I believe something is getting in the way of port 80, but I can't figure out what. I have disabled all startup applications and all nonwindows services. The computer does not have bonjour. I have cleared history/cookies to no avail. I can't find anything suspicious in the running processes. I can't seem to turn off the windows antimalware process to test that, though.

Any ideas?

I decided to run hijack this and found two BHO's. It's funny that on my new install that I used a handful of times, I have adware, but on this install that's been going for years, I have nothing. Oh well. So I had "Crossrider" and "Coupon Companion". I removed all traces of both, yet still no go. It looks like this managed to install itself on 12/2... which had to be damn close to the date that I bought the SSD, however, I had internet activity as recent as 12/26. I recently helped my girlfriend move up to college. She's living in an apartment complex that provides internet for it's residents through several ethernet ports spread throughout their apartment. I set up a wireless connection for her through one in the living room and initially it was working fine. Initially I purchase a relatively cheap ($30) Belkin wireless G router from Walmart and set up the connection and it worked great...for about a day or so. We tried all the tricks of soft resets and hard resets and nothing worked so I eventually decided I purchase a better router on Newegg. I purchased the LINKSYS WRT54GL due to it's superb ratings on Newegg. I set up the connection a couple days ago in the same location. I secured it, did everything and it worked great...for about a day or so. She lost connection again. I believe (I'm not there to see what the computer is saying) it just kept attempting to identify the network, but it never would and therefore she couldn't get the internet. I had her do a soft reset on the router again and it didn't work. I had her hook up wired into the router and that also didn't work. I finally had her unplug the main ethernet connection from the back of the router and plug it directly into her computer (this is the one that goes from the wall to the router) and voila! It works. So there is obviously data coming through the port in the wall, but there seems to be an issue with that data getting through the ro... Read more

Answer:Wireless Network Loses Connection After Working Fine For a Day

I'd like to see this when you're connected directly to the wall jack, then again after a factory reset of the router and connecting to a wired connection through the router. We'll deal with the wireless after we figure out the wired issues.
Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work.

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

So here's the deal. I've successfully set up a wireless network here at the house. My computer is hardwired to the connection, and my laptop works flawlessly with it. Router is a D-link DIR-655. Broadband is Roadrunner cable.

Then there's my mother's pc. We bought her a D-link DWA-130 wireless adapter, which seems to be working fine. Problem is, she will start browsing in IE, and after a little while it just stops reaching the servers. When she tells me it's not connecting, I check and the wireless connection is still excellent. Firefox won't connect at all for some reason. Rebooting seems to get things working again in IE, but after 20-30 minutes max, it stops.

Any ideas? She's contemplating buying a new computer / getting another cable connection just so that she can have a reliable connection...Which I tell her is absurd.

For the last couple days my internet has stopped working. My internet connection is fine, but when I open IE or FF, it loads and loads and finally says "This page cannot be displayed..." and such. It happens for both IE and FF.
Last night a friend worked on it for a while, but couldnt figure out the problem. He finally restored the computer to a few days ago. This morning I got on, tried IE and FF, and it was working, but then I exited out and worked on something on Windows Movie Maker. I tried to get back on the internet, and I am having the same problem! Could this have something to do with Windows Movie Maker, or is it something else? I ask this because the night before my internet stopped working the first time, the last thing I was doing was using WMM.
Can anyone give me some tips on how I can fix this?

I'm having this strange problem.

What happens is, that for no reason, Internet explorer will stop surfing. My connection is fine (My Emule continues to download fine) but any explorer page will just display the "Cannot find page" message. This will ALWAYS happen is there is a blackout or if the computer shuts down unexpectedly.

Some info:

1. Our connection is routered to 2 computers. On the other computer, there is no problem, so since we share a connection, it's surely a problem with the computer itself.

2. The way I always solve this is to restore to a previous point.

3. The HOSTS file is fine. Not the problem.

4. Cleaning all history and cache doesn't help solve it. (only restore).

I use XP Pro SP2. Pentum4, plenty of memory.

Any solutions?
Thanks.

One of the computers on our network won't access the internet. As of last Friday this computer(running NT 4.0 sp6) connected fine. Today(Monday) when the computer was started it logged into the network fine, but wouldn't access the internet or the pop3 address in Outlook. The rest of the computers in the office have no problems at all. I compaired the settings on the non working pc with another in the office running NT and I can't find any difference. I would appreaciate any help offered. Thanks.

Answer:Can't Access Internet, Network Connection is Fine

You may want to select "obtain ip address automatically" and say okay back out. Then reboot the pc and go back into network options and put the info for static ip back in- including gateways and dns #'s. I've done this as a way of resetting the ip options.
But you may want to check the browser you use and under tools -internet options-connections-lan settings click the "automatically detect settings button"
so that your browser finds the proxy settings. This might help also.

So this is a perplexing problem I've been having.

At home I have a wireless network set up for multiple computers. My personal computer is hardlined into the wireless router directly, which is attached to the cable modem. My internet on my laptop (wifi) is fine, as is my mother's desktop (wifi) and my father's desktop (also wifi) but on my computer i cannot connect to the internet despite being able to connect to the network in the house.

I've tried refreshing the modem by calling comcast and asking them to do it but that didn't work, and i've tried switching out my cable (between the computer and the router) and that hasn't worked. So i'm stumped.

the operating system is windows XP and it's a somewhat old Dell if that makes a difference

Answer:Internet connection issues, network is fine

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Hi,

I have two computers, both running Win 7 Pro.  One performs normally in all ways.  The other was fine until a few days ago;  we moved from a hotel WiFi network to a residential cable modem/router, and anything requiring an internet connection suddenly became very unreliable.  Browsers spin their wheels endlessly, Outlook 2010 won't connect to the Gmail IMAP servers, and so on.  The network connection is fast and stable from the other computer.  Both computers run Avast Internet Security, with weekly full scans scheduled.  Both the hotel and the residential networks have been treated as public networks. A quick scan with Avast revealed no malware on the malfunctioning computer.  The good computer is an old HP Pavillion DV7 4070us, the bad one is a newer Sony Vaio VPCSC1AFM. Nothing else has been changed recently.
I tried Malwarebytes.  Initially, it balked at the update, but after a restart it updated its database successfully.  It froze when I tried a scan.  I ran Rkill (nothing detected) and TDSSKiller (no threats found) then Malwarebytes again (no malware found.)

I also have tried changing DNS servers, and disabling IPv6.

I have tried the malfunctioning computer on a guest network at work, and have experienced no difficulties there.  That points to something on the residental network that isn't getting along with something on the malfunctioning computer.  I'm not knowledgab... Read more

Last night my laptop crashed because I turned the priority of a downloading program to real time. When I restarted it I discovered I could not go on the internet anymore, but my connection was successful every time. I tried to renew my ip address, repair my connection, restart my computer countless times, all to no avail. I tried both wired and wireless connections. Has one of my crucial network files been corrupted?

Can anyone give me a solution to the problem?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Solved: My network connection seems fine but I can't use the internet...

I did all the ping tests too, such as "ping yahoo.com" and I received information. I can provide images and videos too.

Hey all,

all help would be greatly appreciated with resolving an issue with a mate's Laptop.

O.S: Vista Premium edition.
Laptop: HP pavillion dv2500.

Background:

The machine became infected with a rogue anti-spyware program (Security Master AV) last week. One of the effects was the machine was unable to connect to the internet. I used spyware doctor to remove the malware (tried a bunch of other programs before this), but still it's not connecting to the internet. the internet was working perfectly before the infection. Have tried installing Firefox along with the original browser I.E 9 but to no avail.
I used the command netsh winsock reset command also (what netsh winsock reset command does are it resets Winsock Catalog to a clean state or default configuration)

Current Condition:
It is successfully connected to the wireless network, but returns the message " internet explorer cannot display the page" when I try to open a page, and when I click diagnose the problem it returns the message " Windows did not find any problems with this computer's network".
I can connect to the internet perfectly when running the machine in safe mode.

Again all help is very much appreciated, please bare in mind that my computer skill's are fairly basis.

Thanks in advance.

Marty

Firefox and IE won't connect to the internet or load any of the pages. The internet connection is fine. I thought it was the router/wireless at home...I took it to work and it connected to the wireless here. It was fine...I just can't get my browsers to load. I have vista and the latest version of firefox and IE

I've checked:
1.)Anti-Virus/Malware software - Scanned, and disabled temporarily to see if this was the cause: It was not.
2.) Router/Wireless - Says connected. I've pinged a few addresses and they're all responding
3.) Firefox Setting: It's directly connected to the internet; no manual proxy setting or anything
4.) IE Setting: Ditto
5.) An IPConfig run shows that things are working fine, connection wise...I wonder if I missed something or screwed up the settings somewhere.
6.) Re-installed Firefox and IE: Nothing changed

My orange broadband connection normally runs at around 0.7 to 0.9 down, 0.4 up. For the past week when I use the internet, some pages can be slow to load or hang part way through. Refreshing the page usually works, and it randomly affects any website. My router shows a constant connection during all this, and it syncs after resetting no problem, and I have swapped over routers and the same happens, so its not the router. I've checked/swapped over all the cabling, disconnected other network pcs/switches. It randomly affects all pc's on the network. When I run a speed test, the test sometimes hangs, other times it completes and shows a decent (by my standards) speed.Yesterday I lost all internet connection for 2 hrs, although the router itself still connected OK to the internet? Only thing I can think of is that it is due to me temporarilly attaching another router/wap to the network last week and this has caused some kind of IP address problem. What should I try next??

Answer:internet hangs, but connection and speed fine!

its kind of strange, lm connected to the internet fine.. l wouldnt be able to post this if l wasnt however my network is reporting no internet connection, this issue seems to only be happening while running my VPN (PureVPN) and has only really started happening in the past day or so.
its not a major issue considering lm not loosing connectivity, its just annoying that windows seems to be saying otherwise.

Hi, I have recently moved into a new building that has ADSL built-in (just connect to the wall and away you go!). Not for me though! At first I connected by hardwire and "limited or no connectivity" appeared. After disabling "Obtain and IP address automatically" and the same for DNS, and adding my IP address (can't remember where I found it sorry! it was a 168.254 number I think), then the "limited connectivity" sign disappeared and I had a perfect connection. However I still don't receive packets, and my internet won't work.
I have tried a number of things, but it is difficult since I only have access to the internet at work (via wireless connection).

I'll quickly start with a brief history of my networks to give as much info as possible:
I originally was connected via a yahoo broadband modem (model unknown) directly, but a flatmate purchased a computer so I set up a router (model unknown - Japanese model, all in Japanese language!). This worked fine for a long time. I moved into another flat and connected to a new modem (1394 Connection - on OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller) which I have disabled at the moment in favour of my on-board NIC (Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC). I also recently installed a wireless PCI card, which works fine (but not in my flat). This is IEEE 802.11g Wireless Cardbus/PCI Adapter, manufacturer is Marvell. I am not sure of the details of my new buildings network and there is... Read more

My internet connection is very weak and can i can move only 10 meters before connection is gone. Almost everywhere, my signal is only showing 1 bar while the laptop's of others are 3 or 4 bars if not full. I am now forced to use a direct cable from my internet to my laptop. This is good sometimes but it is really annoying when i want to stay in my room.. I guess my network adapter is bad.. I'm not sure..

Here are my network adapters:
Atheros AR8152 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.20)
Driver Date: 4/21/2010 Driver Version: 1.0.0.29

Atheros AR9285 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter
Driver Date: 9/25/2010 Driver Version: 9.1.0.328

(As for this driver, I have tried updating this version to Version: 9.2.0.113, but everytime I try to update it, it says that it can't update cause it my laptop has the latest drivers.)
Is this the cause of the problem? I'm not sure.. Can anyone help?

I also thought that maybe my router is defective but this problem is for every wifi connection i use. Others can see multiple networks while I cant see a thing.. Any advice?

Answer:Internet Connection is very weak for my laptop while others are fine.

Welcome to Seven Forums,

I'd usually download the driver from the Atheros site then manually install the driver.
This tutorial might be of helped for you to manually install the driver.

Also, please install and run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector from your computer. Double click the Xirrus Icon on his laptop's desktop, Tap the Printscreen key on your keyboard, open up Paint then choose Edit from the Menu and select Paste, then SAVE it. Upload and attached the file here.

I've been having a problem with my new Dell Inspiron laptop. I mainly use Firefox and very often, it will just stop loading pages as if the internet connection has cut out. I've found this mostly happens when I try to load more than one thing at once or interrupt loading at all. A lot of the time, IE will work fine for a bit longer, and then that too will stop working. I'll be running Windows Live Messenger, and that will continue to work.
When Firefox stops loading, after I close it, it will continue to run under processes in task manager, but won't close, and when I try to reopen, it will say that firefox is already running.
The problem will always fix itself once I reset the system, but it's really frustrating to have to reset every half hour. I've been finding that whenever this happens, it takes a really long time to log out, and I'm thinking that's due to the programs refusing to close, but I'm not sure.
I'd absolutely love the person who could fix this for me. :)

I think this has been happening since I upgraded to windows 8.1, back in October/November (which is around where this problem started). It's WiFi internet.

I can connect to the internet just fine, speeds are normal, all that good stuff. But when I'm connecting to a new network it takes forever (and "Connecting to the network is taking longer than usual" comes up) and it comes up with "The connection is limited."

The most annoying part is that this happens between four DIFFERENT connections in 2 countries. So. I need this issue solved, it takes forever to connect to the internet if I disconnect for any reason, My phone connects to the WiFi just fine, so it's not a WiFi issue. Even connecting to the WiFi with an ethernet cable doesn't work.

Problem arose yesterday. I've ran diagnostics and turned the router on and off, plugged the Ethernet in for a better connection. My hp envy 17 laptop finds no problems with the connection yet I cannot access any pages through the web browsers properly. I've restarted my laptop several times and sometimes a page will load but never load completely and if I click a link on the page it will not load at all. My Skype works fine and I've ran a full scan with panda security which has detected no problems. I haven't downloaded anything in the space of when my laptop was working fine and when it stopped working, in fact I barely used it at all. I've tried all the conmand prompts I've seen suggested in previous cases like this i.e. The netsh winsock etc. sort of stuff but they haven't seemed to work. I believe I don't have any proxy servers active on my laptop or in any of the browsers (not sure if that makes sense since I'm not really an expert on this technical stuff ) also chrome keeps crashing every time I load a page, which has happened to me previously so may be a separate problem, but it isn't really helping the matter. Really hoping I don't have some sort of malware.. Any suggestions of solutions would be great, the laptop is fairly new, bought it in September I believe so I don't see why there should be any problems with it (considering its price too >.>) thanks a lot. Hello,
For the last four or five days the wireless connection on my PC has been on and off. I often get the resolving host message in Chrome, and IE just hangs up on itself. I have run Malwarebytes, Emsisoft, and the purchased version of Hitman Pro, all in safe mode, and all after running RKill, and none of them are finding anything....but since this PC is the only one in the home with an issue, I can't help but think its Malware. I can browse just fine on it in Safe Mode, but not in normal mode. Please advise.
ALSO - I did have an issue in June...and Hitman Pro found a Trojan in SoftwareUpdateLocalized.DLL....and its fix, was to delete it...so now every time I boot up, the CPU looks for that file and pops up an error message that it cannot find it. Not sure if this is connected to my connectivity issues or not.
Thank you!!

I posted before and college took over my life a bit. Sorry about wasting your time. I've completed the scan requested. It didn't seem to find anything.
I've realised that it's not just Firefox that refuses to close. Whenever anything crashes, it will remain in the processes list in task manager. For example, if MSN crashes, it will stay in processes, and if I try to reopen it, I'll just end up with multiple copies of it in processes, but it won't actually open, unless I reset my laptop. When anything crashes or internet browsers stop responding, it takes a really long time to log off, occasionally over 30 minutes.

I've had a little search before posting, but didn't see anything exactly like my issue.

I have a Ienovo laptop. It's not ideal for games, but it has always run everything perfectly well when played on low settings (for new games at least. Old games worked fine on any settings)
I'd happily play with 35fps on most games. World of Warcraft would run on 20fps, but I'd never get any lag.
No lag at all.

And I had a happy gaming life.

Then a Windows update went wrong and became stuck in the eternal boot loop of doom. In the end I had to do a complete system restore and start again from scratch. This is where the trouble began. After reinstalling Windows 8 I found that I would get either huge lag spikes or just constant high latency.

Just to make clear, the laptop's hardware hasn't changed. This is not a hardware issue. Before the reinstall everything ran PERFECTLY. After the reinstall, it is near impossible to play games online. Even very processer light games struggle. I want to make this clear because people usually immediately say, "maybe your hardware isn't powerful enough". Before the reinstall I was getting an average of 50-100ms on World of Warcraft. Now I get around 1500-3000ms. Again, I have an Intel HD Graphic Driver (which sucks, I know) but clearly, it used to run the games well enough.

I upgraded to Windows 10 because I thought that it might help. My problems haven't improved and I still suffer huge lag.

OK. I'm trying to switch from wireless to a faster(?) ethernet cable based internet access.
I use a Dell Optiplex 755, 32 bit OS, Windows 7. I'm the utilizing Comcast high speed internet supplier, a LinkSys E4200 wireless router, a LinkSys WUMC710 (wireless-ac universal media connector; with promises faster connections/speeds) with ethernet cable OUT to the ONLY ethernet port/card supplied [Network Connector (RJ-45)] on the rear of the small form factor tower. when I run the PC with USB wireless (Linksys AE2500) it works fine, but, I hope for an improvement with the LinkSys WUMC710 inserted in the chain.
the Network Adapter (found in Device Manager) is the Intel(R) 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection. This DOES NOT work with the ethernet cable connection (error 651, WAN Miniport problem). even when I uninstall this driver, it reinstalls upon Windows 7 restart, which is contrary to some of the suggested fix posts I've found in on-line forums dealing with these types of issues.

I'm thinking it may be a missing driver for the ethernet port/Network Connector (RJ-45), but, I am neither a hardware, nor IT tech. therefor I have no idea what driver I would SPECIFCICALLY require ofr this port(?), nor can I discern the particular ethernet card that came factory installed on this machine. I have consulted the Dell site and, lo & behold, they don't endorse using Windows 7 on the Optiplex 755, so the only driver updates/downloads are listed for endorsed OS's XP & Vista. so n... Hi
This is not really a windows 10 problem but perhaps somebody can help me.
I have been using Teamviewer and my work computer to access my personal laptop which is on the same premises - I live on the same premises as my workplace. Over the past few days I have been trying to get teamviewer wake on lan to work. It seems very coincidental to me that suddenly after using teamviewer this problem occured. On Thursday this week (16/2/2017) while connected to my laptop with teamviewer I experienced a few times when I had to reconnected - I assumed this was because the internet went down and came back on. I used my laptop without any problem that night without remotely accessing it via teamviewer, physically using it. I even used the LAN connection to browse the internet. On Friday we had a huge electrical storm in my area, and I noticed that I couldn't connect via teamviewer even though the laptop was switched on and wasn't in sleep mode. I went to my laptop a bit later that day and discovered that my Ethernet connection wasn't working. I tried to connect via wifi - I could, had to use the windows troubleshooter because something was wrong but it fixed it and I could and still can connect via wifi. I decided to look at posts on various internet site to see how others has sorted out the problem, Ive tried various things that were mentioned and some far nothing has helped. I suspect my Ethernet port has been fried but how can I be certain of this?
I had the driver that I original... Read more

I recently had a hard drive failure. After installing a new internal hard drive, formatting and installing XP Home/SP2, I reinstalled all my back up files and tweaks etc. All is lean, mean and secure. However, when I was checking my Device Manager, I noticed the yellow ? next to my Ethernet Controller, which explains why I had to reconnect to my DSL through a USB connection instead of my previous ethernet connection.

In my Ethernet Controller Properties, under the General Tab, it reads as follows:

Device Type: Other Devices
Manufacturer: Unknown
Location: PCl Bus 2, Device 8, Function 0

Under the device status states, "Drivers for this device are not installed (code 28). I tried to reinstall the drivers through the Hardware Update Wizard, but it failed and stated, "Hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software.

I have an Intel Pro 100 M Integrated PCI NIC Card.

Thank you in advance for any for any guidance on this.

Answer:Ethernet Connection Not Working

did you instal the correct drivers for the device?? - where are you getting them from?
you could delete from device manager and then wait for windows to find and then point to the correct drivers

have you installed your motherboard drivers ??

video drivers
sound drivers

often need installing - with the correct manufactureres drivers

I've been using an ethernet connection to connect to the internet for a while now. I was using it one evening. I switched it off as normal. When I switched my laptop back on in the morning I had no connection. And it's telling me a network cable is unplugged?? I have tried various cables so there cant be anything wrong with the cable itself as they all produce the same result. The lights above the network socket on the back of the laptop appear to have gone off and I can't seem to get them to go back on. I have re-installed the driver for Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller yet this hasn't solved it. I have checked the Internal Network Card Power Management and this shows my network card is On. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Ethernet connection just not working

Have you tried something as simple as a different ethernet cable , Windows will tell you that a network cable is unplugged at both ends , not just the PC end , so check the connection to the router , and maybe try it in a different port . Ashley

I recently bought a netgear router. The problem is, that it will not connect to my laptop. I believe that the main reason why is not connecting is because my ethernet cable is not working properly. For example, when I try to connect my modem to my laptop via ethernet, it will notice it but it will tell me that it is an unidentified network. For this reason I have to use my usb cable which is working fine. I think this is really weird because if the ethernet calbe wouldnt be working my laptop wouldnt even notice it. I tried downloading some ether drivers but I still cannot conect.... this is the version of my ethernet thing marvell yukon 88e8039 pci-e fast ethernet controller.

Please let me know what can I do.

Answer:ethernet connection not working....

First off, how about the EXACT make/model of the modem and the router. You do realize that when you change from the USB connection to the Ethernet connection on most modems that you MUST cycle power on the modem, right?

Ethernet cable is new, XFinity modem plugged into is working , "device manager' shows 3 gigabyte network connections (and I know I only have one) : Intel(R) 82567LF gigabyte connection
Intel(R) 82567LF gigabyte connection 2
Intel(R) 82579LM gigabyte connection

??????
the Intel(R) 82567LF gigabyte connection 2 says (in "properties") :"windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it"

"......windows cannot load the drivers for this device (code 31) " ????

same for Intel(R) 82567LF gigabyte connection

and Intel(R) 82579LM gigabyte connection says all is "...installed correctly" ? but no Ethernet connection, wireless only.

Tried re-naming Ethernet from "unknown" to "Local Area Connection" and computer said..."cannot use because that name is already being used" ? yet nowhere do I see any other 'local area connection' ?

Answer:Ethernet Connection Not Working

Try disabling the wifi and see if it'll connect. If not. Then download latest drivers for wired network card. Remove any software related to the wired network card, then uninstall via device manager. Say yes if it asks to delete drivers. Reboot and reinstall.

This has to be some sort of DNS resolution problem or something with the Exchange Server because when I load Outlook 2003 with an internet connection, it takes forever to load--like 5 minutes or more. However, if I pull the Internet connection out or disable it, it loads immediately. Then, if I connect to the Internet after Outlook is already loaded, it will connect to the Exchange Server very quickly.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

For about 2 weeks now I cannot connect to the internet with my laptop. I run win xp (dual boot Ubuntu but haven't used it yet). Router is Belkin wireless with 4 ethernet ports, and my Ubuntu desktop connects to it just fine. I had this home network running fine, but all of a sudden it won't give me internet access, either through the wireless nor ethernet connection. It intermittently shows a good connection (right after I power cycle modem & router) or no connectivity or limited connectivity after it has been connected a while, or so it seems.

I tried connecting directly to the modem, turned off firewall, rebooting computer, changing cables, flushing DNS, netsh, winsock fix program, and everything else I can find on Google, but still can't get online.

Any suggestions anyone?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hello,

I was hoping someone might be able to help me, I've just installed Vista on my Vaio Laptop, All works fine except connecting to my wifi broadband seems to be the last programme loaded up. Takes another 30 secs or so to connect after vista has finished loading up.

I was wondering if there was anyway to move it up the start-up sequence?

As always have to do manual virus update, as it can't find Internet connection and few other programs need updating manually.

Thanks in advance for any help

Answer:Vista boots fine, Internet connection seems last programme to load

Update should check when every a connection is availible.
Check your Update settings.

Control Panel, Windows Update, Change settings in top left corner.
Make sure that Never Check for updates is not selected.
If Install updates automatically is checked, make sure time is set for when your computer is on. Updates will be downloaded, but not be installed. You get no notice unless they are installed.

I use Check for updates and let me choose to download and install option. Get a notice that they are there, but I get to do them when I wish.

Okay, so I had my friend download a torrent program (uTorrent). And shortly after, as he was downloading a file, his internet stopped working.

I don't know too much on the situation, but appearently it says his connection to the internet is "Excellent," and yet, when he tries to use his internet browser (Either IE or Netscape) it just loads for a minute and eventually says "Web Page Not Found" or whatever the common error is.

Any possible solutions to try?

Basically, I had my Zoom router in my office (That's what we call it), and we all decided to move the computer into my room, along with the router.

Now, when I plug in the phone cord (ADSL), into the wall, the link (or internet establishment), keeps blinking, when it shouldn't, saying that it cannot establish a connection.

Both phone cords have the same number, and everything.. and it just wont establish connection, and I don't have anything wireless, and the room is around 50 ft away, so I can't get online at all anymore..

Is there a difference between a phone line, and the root phone line?

Hi, on my pc (windows XP) I can get onto the internet via wireless mode, if I then disable the wireless connection I can't access the internet using the ethernet cable. The bt broadband connection is fine, as I can disable the wifi on my works lap top, plug into the ethernet cable and hey presto I can get on the internet. So its not the cable or the hub that seems to be the problem. When I look at the connection options the local area connection appears to be firewalled connected on the pc and at 100 Mbps (what ever that means, but I know its better than the 54Mbps I'm getting on the wifi set up). So can anybody out there please help me?
thanks in advance

First, thanks in advance for your time. Here is my trouble. I am trying to network a compaq presario 5304, ethernet card d-link dfe-530tx fast ethernet adapter, with a Dell optiplex gx1, card: 3-com fast etherlink xl 10/100mb tx ethernet nic. I have installed almost all protocols available, microsoft networks, tcp-ip, etc.... I am using a Belkin fastcat 5e cable (probably over kill, but...) To the best of my knowledge, this network should function. How do I test my cards?? Should both computers be running and then plug in cable or should it find the network on startup?? What is best protocol to use if we would like to play games?? I know for a fact that workgroup names, etc are all correct..... Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated...
