Solved: Ethernet works fine on laptop but not on desktop.

Question: Solved: Ethernet works fine on laptop but not on desktop.

Earlier my desktop was to b in d same place where the router was der. Everything worked fine. Now I decided to shift my desktop to another room. I have kept the router at the earlier place only. I have brought a 25m long new cat 5 cable. When I connected it to my desktop, the orange led on ethernet port do not light up and the desktop is unable to detect the ethernet cable and hence the internet connection. On the router, a light of ethernet keeps on blinking every 1 second. I was worried whether my ethernet port got fried. So i inserted another ethernet cable, but then the ethernet orange light came and the pc detedted the connection. Therefore I thought the cable might be faulty. Therefore I connected my laptop with that 25m cable. But my laptop detected it and showed the internet connection. But now when i again connect the cable to my desktop, there's no light and the pc does not detect it. However, if i connect the 25m cable to my desktop then during boot the ethernet light on router is stable just as when it is normally connected to the internet. But when i go into windows it starts blinking every 1 second.

My router is MTNL Model No. UT-304R2
Desktop - Asus P7H55, core i5
Laptop- HP 2000
Windows 7 Ultimate on both desktop and laptop.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I had posted earlier also in this forum and d prblm got solved as it was a driver issue. Now again i have got a similar prblm but is not a driver issue. I have a P7H55 Asus Motherboard with the ethernet port and cable working fine individually. However, when i connect them together, the ethernet light on the router remains stable as if connected but still the desktop shows not connected. This time i have installed the drivers which came from the motherboard manufacturer and are the latest. In the Network and Sharing Center, the icon is enabled. It does not show cross sign. Please help me out.

Recently I performed a reinstallation of windows on my laptop. Normally I had no problems with the wireless, but after the reinstallation my laptop refuses to acknowledge that there are wireless networks. When I'm not connected to the internet, it asks to connect using a wire connection only.

I have a Dell Inspiron iM101z running Windows 7 Home Premium, and I downloaded all the drivers for what the Dell website told me my laptop model was, a Dell Inspiron 1121. Attached is a picture showing the oddities of my problem. The icon on the taskbar shows that I have to connect with an ethernet cord; no wireless icon is shown.

If I try to unplug the ethernet cable and connect to the internet, I only get the option to do a broadband connection. Also, once I unplug the cable, I get "no connections available."

Answer:Laptop refuses to detect anything wireless, ethernet works fine

Most likely this is still a driver problem.

I am running a full system scan through Avast to see if there are any viruses, other than this I am not sure what to do but my Dell is now a rather expensive paper weight if I can't access the Internet (Edit 9:55 AM - according to Avast I have no viruses on the computer, HELP!)

Yesterday, my old keyboard totally gave up the ghost (no power) so I installed a new one &  today, the optical mouse pointer froze solid in the middle of the screen.  I did a reboot and it worked long enough to at least get the computer booted, but then froze again and this time, nothing I've tried has helped. The mouse works fine when I plug it into my laptop so I know there are a number of things that could be wrong with the desktop itself since the mouse must be okay, but I don't know how to get into the computer without a mouse. I have a *lock* on the desktop. Now we are coming down to tax time and my last three years of returns are on the PC and I need it soon for the carryovers.I have a love/hate relationship with these machines.  Until I hear from someone, I will continue trying whatever I can think of.tia

A few days ago my desktop booted up very slowly and I was not able to connect to any webpages or any programs which use the internet. I just left it to sit for a few days and tried to boot it up again today, it still booted rediculously slow (took about 10 minutes) but it's still not working so I figured I'd register here and ask for some help. The router which I have connected to my desktop's modem is used to give internet to my laptop is still working fine (I'm posting this from my laptop). I've tried to do a system restore on my desktop, but the restores get an error and don't work. Also when i do the system restores, my desktop icons wont load so i have to end the explorer.exe process and then run the process again, after which all the icons show. (this only happens after I system restore). Another thing that is weird is that I can still connect to AIM (the instant messanger) on my desktop, but nothing else. Not sure what to do at this point, hopefully you guys can help.

Modem = sb5100
Wireless Router = Dlink 601

I think the issue is the network name for some reason is NETWORK 3 on my desktop but on my laptop it's something else, my laptop can create a homegroup but my desktop cannot.

It's weird, my desktop cannot create not join my laptop homegroup but my laptop can create it just can't join my desktop so it's a desktop issue and I think it's the multiple network names after you set up a network and it asked you if this is public or home I created like 3 of them since my wifi routers kept on going bad.

Hi, this my first time posting and I really would refrain from bothering people if I could, but I've been having this issue with my wireless for the last month so I thought perhaps someone could help.

The OS is a Windows XP home.

I go into IPCONFIG/ALL and it tells me that my wireless is disconnected

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers.
I've tried going into the router (it's a NETGEAR MR814) IP, and I've added it to the list of devices that can connect to it, but it's not working. It just... won't work. It's not that there's a security lock on my router because I've disabled it and it still wouldn't work.

So now I'm completely befuddled, and disheartened, and on the verge of just taking apart my machine were it not for the ethernet connection. Can someone please help?

Answer:Ethernet works fine, Not Wireless

First try going into network property and see if you can see it.
If you see something like "Local Area connection 2" with wireless network card, right click on the icon and view available network/connection.
If you see your wireless router setting, highlight and click "Connect".

I'm sure this has been asked 1000 times but I cannot seem to find my exact issue anywhere. Hopefully this helps myself and anyone who runs into this issue.

To start, I have Windows 7 Professional 64bit. Everything worked 100% fine with absolutly no issue and then.... I moved. Now we have Fios instead of Comcast.

Now to the issue. When I have the ethernet connected I cannot get internet access but I have full network access. I went out and purchased a new wirless card and wirless works just fine. I tested 2 different cables, recrimped both of them and nothing. I have activity on the PC and the Router so I am sure they are good.

I have tried everything I have read online, Updated Realtek Family PCI Ethernet drivers from MSIglobal. Disabled/Enabled. ipconfig /flushdns, /release and /renew. I went as far as Backing up and reformating the Hard Drive and before reinstalling the backup I tested it and nothing. Restored my backup file and yep.. nothing.

Its kind of frustrating. I'm not exactly and expert but i am in no way a novice either. This one has me stumped. Im thinking maybe it is a windows service that is not set to start correctly but I figured I would creat a post while I am at work and maybe have and answer to test before I hunt through the services tonight.

Any advice is greatly appreciated

Hi all.
First of all, I want to thank you guys in advance for putting your time and effort to solve my issue. any answer would be grateful to me.

My internet provider is At&t and as I mentioned in the title, wireless internet works perfectly fine, but Ethernet connection doesn't work on my desktop. Currently I am using wireless adapter on my PC, and it works just fine. I tried disabling the wireless connection, resetting the modem, re installing the Ethernet driver and anything I can think of.

The odd thing is that my brother used Ethernet connection just fine with his desktop about three weeks ago, with same router and same cable. So I am assuming that my computer is the one with the problem but I can't figure it out why.

I'm going to try out the different cable tomorrow, but I highly doubt it will fix my problem.

Help me guys. If you need any other information, ask away. I will give it to you as much as I can

Answer:Wireless works fine, Ethernet doesn't

Odds are that the NIC has failed.

Another low possibility (in addition to cable and router LAN port) are the PC's firewall or security suite misconfigured or corrupted.

Another thing to try: in Device Manager right click on the ethernet - Properties - Advanced tab - for the 'Speed & Duplex' property try different values beginning with '100 Mbps full duplex' and '10 Mbps full duplex.'

I have recently bought a router, the Fritz.Box Home Server 1&1 VDSL. I have set it up via wifi and can connect to the internet without a problem.
However, I would like to connect my PC to the router via LAN.
When I put the LAN cable into my PC and the router, both my PC and my router react and tell me there is a connection but they do not recognize each other. The router says there is something in LAN1 and the PC says there is a LAN cable without a connection. I cannot access the router via LAN, only via wifi.
My PC uses the Killer Network 2200e driver, I tried removing it and then manually adding it again, it did not work. My IPv4 settings seem fine, too, I have no idea what to do now.

So here is my story. A couple days ago I awoke to having no internet access over any devices connected through Ethernet or Wifi. My first thought was it was just a fluke and to power cycle my router and modem. After doing so I still got nothing. Called up my ISP thinking that the internet might be down due to a winter storm we had that night. They said that it wasn't. They sent signals to my modem and everything appeared to be working properly.

My equipment then:

Arris SB6141
Asus RT-AC3200

So I decided to make a run to Best Buy (not my first choice but convenient) to pick up a new cable modem. Purchased a Arris SB6190. Got it home, called up ISP (Spectrum) and had them provision it. Everything went smooth. Well now I was getting internet but only over WiFi. So now I'm thinking that my router bit the dust. Took another trip to Best Buy and purchased a Linksys EA9500 router. Got home, hooked it all up, same exact thing. Wifi works but everything connected through Ethernet has no connection.

Answer:Ethernet won't connect to router, wifi works fine

and welcome to the Forum

Lets take a peek at your network environment:

Power Cycle everything . . Turn off the Modem, router and all pc's . . turn on the Modem and wait a few minutes for the lights to stabilize . . then turn on the router, then one pc at a time. See if you connect to the internet.

Then: check your browser's settings, remove any proxy settings if found, here's how

with the pc connected to the router, Click on Start . . Run . . type CMD

At the > prompt type or copy and paste the following command:

ipconfig/all > 0 & notepad 0

and press enter.

Come back here and Paste the results in a message.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB drive, or a CD-R disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

I have a ZyXEL 600 wireless router - it has worked without issues for years.

However yesterday evening my wireless router suddenly stopped broadcasting a signal.

2 different PC's and a wifi dongle attached to our TV were suddenly all unable to find my network.

The WLAN light on the router was still lit up. I connected my Acer Aspire 5742Z laptop to the router via an ethernet cable and it worked fine. I connected to the router and it said there were no errors.

I phoned ZyXEL support this morning and they dialled in, confirmed the router was reporting it was working. They installed inSSIDer on my PC and verified no signal was being picked up - but other local wireless networks were being picked up.

They suggested buying another modem as it was very old and could have just reached the end of its life.

So I bought a brand new Sitecom 300N x2 modem this morning, connected it up and have the exact same problem. All the right lights are on the modem (solid WLAN, DSL and Internet lights), I can connect via an ethernet cable but none of my devices can find a the wireless browser (but can find other networks and connect to them).

I've spent hours on the phone today to various tech people and gone through channel switching, changing encryption etc but nothing has worked. The router is sat in the same place it has been for the last 3 years and the laptop is inches from it but still no joy.

As far as I can see I've ruled out:

I have a Win 7 system. Everything was working, until a few days ago, and then the Ethernet connection stopped. The activity LEDs work, but the Ethernet will not connect. The Wifi works fine through the same router as the Ethernet is plugged into.

Here is what I did so far.Rebooted PC (full power cycle)
Rebooted router
MSCONFIG to disable all unknown services and apps
Replaced Ethernet cable
Tried a different port
Confirmed Ethernet driver is latest version
Deleted Ethernet driver anyway and reinstalled
Reset IP Stack
Set TCP/IPv4 to static IP and defined the DNS server
Confirmed the adapter's advanced settings were correct
Connected to a USB Ethernet adapter that I know works (and has worked before on this PC)

Nothing I did in the above list worked - Ethernet does not connect. The activity LEDs are working. The Network Connections shows a plugged-in Ethernet as an Unidentified Network.

Hi! I recently moved to a new home and changed cable providers to Time Warner. They provided me with a Motorola Surfboard modem and I have a Netgear R6200 router.

In order to get the modem to see the router, I had to clone my laptop's MAC address onto the router. Now the router is working great wirelessly with all of my devices...except for my laptop. I can only get internet on my laptop with an ethernet cord plugged into my router. With the ethernet cord unplugged, I can connect to my wireless network but there is no internet connectivity. My PC with windows 7 is the only computer with issues in the house. Ethernet works perfectly but wifi doesn't even when I don't have the ethernet hooked up. The wifi says it is connected but browsers, steam, and Itunes don't work. I have Bitdefender A/V and already tried uninstalling it, no change. I also uninstalled steam and Itunes with still no change. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for the wireless adapter. I tried looking and I don't recall downloading or installing anything around the time the problem started. Before I try replacing the adapter itself, I was hoping for help here since I saw a very similar problem in another thread.

Hello,My name is Vladan and I have had a problem occur yesterday. My internet stopped working.I immediately tried my phone's wireless connection and saw that it was working fine, so I tried laptop wireless and it too was working. When I plug in my network cable it stops working. My ethernet internet connection status shows that Ipv4 and Ipv6 have "no internet accsess". It's not just my laptop's wired internet that stopped working, it's the whole network I have in my apartment consisting of two more computers who also lost their wired-ethernet internet accsess. I suspect something is wrong with my router since it relays my internet but wireless works fine so I'm stumped. When I plug in my cable it shows limited connectivity.I have tried ipconfig /release - /renew, I have tried netsh winsock reset and netsh int ip reset log.txt I have tried (netsh winsock reset catalog), also I tried (netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log) and it said the following ::::::Resetting Interface, OK!Resetting Neighbor, OK!Resetting Path, OK!Resetting , failed.Accsess is denied.Resetting, OK!Restart the computer to complete this action.::::I don't know what is this "failed and accsess is denied" but it might be the problem.I have rebooted my router several times but also with no results. Answer:Network troubleshoot - Ethernet (wired) stopped working, Wireless works fine.

Did your ISP give you this router such as your leasing it etc? If so contact them for a replacement. If you own this router then I'd try factory reset button to set it back to factory default. If that doesn't cure this then buy a new router. They are pretty cheap these days.Your router could have been hacked, the access denied is strange!

Probably this is something simple in IE7 options/settings but I failed to figure it out.

This is happening on my desktop (am writing this on my laptop). It's failing to connect, with the exception being "secure" sites - https://....

Email is working fine.

PS this happened after we did Microsoft livecare free scan and implemented corrective actions (malware/virus deletions); it then prompted us to reboot, then indicated new Windows updates to install, and then it prompted us to re-install IE7

Answer:Solved: IE7 fails to connect to sites with http, works in https; email works fine

I got this problem last night, when i took my tower to my girls house. She didnt have a surge protector, jsut a powerstrip so i plugged it into that.

Worked fine until like 20 minutes into a movie it just shut off.. like an instant "gone"

I was like wtf, so i try to turn it back on, and it wont turn on unless i flip the switch in the back of the power supply to "off" and then back to "on" Also It shuts off in the same spot every time after i put in my password and it shows the desktop for a coupa seconds and it just dies..

It started in safe mode once (i havent found how to make it start in safe mode again...)

I had this issue on a different system previously (would shut off whenever i turned on WM9, and the problem turned out to be the motherboard) So im lost and confused..

Heres the system in case anyone can help
Athlon XP 2800Barton
Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe
Radeon 9600 AIW
2x 256mb Geil ram
1 512 corsair ram
80gb WD harddrive (system drive)
250gb removable maxtor
Skyhawk power one PSU
DVD/cd-rw drive
CD-rw drive

thats about it...

Oh yeah, for some weird reason this system will NOt recognise blank CD's.. it will play and read normat/burned cd's just fine.. but it wont read blank ones..

Oh yeah, the last thing i did before taking it out of my house was install PowerISO, if it makes any difference

Your advice would be most appreciated - and please bear in mind I'm technologically limited so treat me as a 5 year old with the advice

I previously had BB connected to a laptop. I've just changed ISP and bought myself a new laptop. The new ISP has provided me with a Netgear router so I connected the laptop initially via Ethernet and now wirelessly. Everything is currently working perfectly.

The Issue

I now wish to hook up my Desktop via Ethernet. It doesn't yet have an Ethernet port but I'll be buying one tomorrow. I want to be able for both laptop and desktop to surf simultaneously. I'm not too fussed about having the ability for the two computers to talk to each other unless this is simple to achieve - or happens by default. Both PCs are fully firewalled, virus/spam protected etc.

The Solution ?

This is purely guesswork - feel free to criticise, amend, suggest and point out blindingly obvious omissions

1) Install the PCI Network adaptor to the laptop + update drivers as necessary.

2) Disable firewall/virus/spam protections etc

3) Connect to broadband via Ethernet

4) Re-enable all protections

5) Any comments about the ability of the two computers to network is gratefully received. For instance, do I need to do anything to set the network up or is this achieved automatically through installation of the new connection. Will I be able to perform tasks such as requesting a print through the laptop to print via my wired conn... Read more

I have been searching for an answer for this one but hit a brick wall with it so I hope you can help.

I have just moved to a new flat and my broadband connection won't be up for another 8 weeks. I have a desktop pc and a sony vaio notebook with a wlan adapter. I have spoken to my neighbour above and he has a wlan connection, he's been kind enough to give me the WEP key to access this until mine is installed.

I have tried this on the laptop, I can access it fine from a couple of the rooms. However my main pc is my desktop and this only has LAN cards I have attempted to share the WLAN connection with my desktop using ICS however the router is configured on and Windows needs this IP to enable shared internet on the notebook. I can't really ask my neighbour to change this just so I can share the connection to my desktop.

I have managed to create a lan connnection between the two machines so I can RDP into the notebook to browse the web.

I need to know if there is a way I can configure the network connetions within xp to allow the connection to be shared and if not, If there is some kind of proxy application that will allow me to share the connection with my desktop, I have had a look at winproxy but it's all a bit over my head.

I know it would be much simpler to buy a WLAN card for my desktop but this is only temporary so I don't really want to spend the money on something I will never use again.

Can anyone help with this.

Hi there,

When I turn on my computer (running Windows XP), it seems to boot up fine, but a few seconds after the desktop appears, the screen goes black for a few seconds. Then the desktop appears for 4-5 seconds, then the screen goes black. This just reapeats over & over and the computer seems frozen. There is also a little red 'X' hanging out in my toolbar, who looks especially evil. As time passes, the toolbar becomes warbled.

I rebooted my computer in Safe Mode, which works fine & have been trying to fix it from here all day. I tried following the 8 steps to rid/protect your computer from malware/viruses, but some steps can't be completed in Safe Mode.

Can you please help?

Hi there
thank goodness --for the moment you can get the benefits of W8 with a DESKTOP presented after boot (although metro is there too of course) --but it starts in the desktop. The trick is to use W2012 SERVER !!!.

Read the remark on the installation choice if you are goung to try it -.

Note using a server as a desktop OS is a bit fiddly to configure --worthwhile once you've done it --but remember SOME of your programs might not work because you are on a server. Most "Normal" ones will. Acrinis backup won't --it wants the server version --but just use the stand alone bootable version !!

For screenshots I've got them in this thread over at W7 forums --I installed it as a VM on W7 -- didn't want TWO "Preview" os'es running on top of each other. !!

You can download W2012 server --doesn't need any keys --expiry same as W8 Release preview.

Here's the link second post in the thread.

note ist time I tried it failed --hence the title of the thread !!!!! but after a bit of fiddling it's fine and install time around 10 mins on a decent laptop (8GB intel I5 Sony VAIO)..

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop. It's over 5 years old. Recently the power/indicator light at the front of the laptop hasn't come on, but everything else works fine still (charges fine etc.). Usually it would be on while the laptop is on, indicate when the laptop is charging, turn red during low battery, and pulse slowly while the laptop is in standby and charging. Is there a way I can fix this? Is there a part I can buy and replace to make this light work again? Thanks for your help.

Answer:Laptop works fine, but the power light does not?

First try
remove power lead and battery - press and hold power button for 30 seconds
reconnect power lead and see if the LED comes on.

My 6-month-old laptop, which is in the exact same room as my computer (bedroom), can load a webpage almost instantly and download 20mb files in around seven seconds whereas my one-month-old computer takes 15 - 20 seconds to load a webpage and half an hour to download a 20mb file. And sometimes it just refuses to work at all!
I've un-installed my antivirus (AVG) as I've had internet problems with it previously, but it unfortunately didn't do anything about my connection.
Moving my computer nearer to my router isn't an option either. I really have no idea what to do to make my computer's internet work properly.

So I have 2 laptops, a win 7 and a win 8,
The windows 7 laptop works on the internet fine, but the windows 8 one always disconnects, even when the win 7 isn't on.
It disconnects usually when I'm running multiple programs that use the internet on it, but when I run a game like counter-strike, it disconnects too, but not nearly as often.

The router is from 2008 or 2009, but it's a tiny aztech one. I'm sure it's not the isp, because like I said, the other laptop works fine.

Answer:One laptop works fine, but the other keeps on disconnecting from the internet

Make sure you have the latest wireless driver from the laptop manufacturer's web site.. Reinstall it if you already have it.

What do you do to regain connection after it has been lost?

I have a new 3G router which I am trying to connect to an all-in-one PC-LCD monitor (for digital signage) via LAN. The PC is running XP-embedded.

The problem is that I can't see the router from the PC. I have plugged it in, connected it via LAN and set the Local Area Connection to Obtain IP automatically and DNS automatically.

However I get limited or no connectivity and clicking repair says it cannot renew IP address. If I do ipconfig, there is no default gateway showing.

Therefore if I go to IE and type 192.168.01 which is what the IP should be, it can't find anything.

It isn't to do with the 3G network, because I can't even access the router config page, before even thinking about getting to the outside world.

It doesn't seem to be the LAN connection/wiring because the LAN light on the router flickers when the PC is trying to get an IP, so it is connecting ok.

It also doesn't appear to be an issue which resetting the router would solve, since I just unplugged it and plugged it into my laptop LAN and as soon as I typed 192.168.01 into IE, it works fine on my laptop.

Any suggestions most welcome as I am stumped...

Answer:Laptop hangs but works fine on safe mode

Could try running MSCONFIG in safe-mode, de-select start-up applications & non-windows services (selective startup) and see if that gets you past the lock-up issue. That would at least help identify if its a possible software / service issue on load.

Additional information, if disabling everything appears to fix the lock-up issue, then its simply a matter of process of elimination. Re-enable services & programs one at a time, and see if you can determine which program is causing explorer / desktop to hang.

When i plug in my memory stick at home and click on computer and on removable disk, it doesnt want to show me my files. The program quits responding and I have to take out my memory stick. Answer:My USB isnt working with my laptop, but at school it works fine...

Obviously its not the device. It has something to do with your computer.

When you plug in the device just let it sit for a minute, vista should go and get the proper drivers/firmware for the device.

Watch you tray in the bottom right hand side of the screen. Does a box pop up when you plug in the device.

Do you have a firewall installed if so which one?

Hey Guys, Im DIEING HERE, Heres the deal: I did a full reformatted to my HP laptop dv6700 (specs below) from a Downgraded XP Home OS (bought it originally running Vista) to a currently Windows 7 Ultimate. I connect my laptop to my toshiba tv via a VGA cord. Now my laptop screen for some messed up reason is no longer displaying. But when it is connected via VGA i can use the computer just fine using my TV as my only screen. The problem is I cannot get the laptop to display. After multiple shutdowns and force restarts, and after leaving the laptop for a decent period of time i turn it on and it will random again display on my laptop, I have concluded from this that it is less likely a hardware problem and more likely a software one. I have the correct latest driver from nvidia. Another noteworthy point is that the Toshiba is only screen recgonized when i am in the screen resolution menu.

Device Manager Display adapter is the updated version of NVIDIA GeForce 7150M / nForce 630M

Hi ,My name is Kyle and I'm 16 and have a Dell Inspiron 1545 Laptop that was bought roughly two years ago at Christmas time by my parents.  The laptop itself seems to be in pretty good condition, although a few months ago I had to replace the hard drive.  It runs on Windows 7, BIOS version A11, and has roughly 150 GB of free disk space.  I do not pay for security programs, although I do use Microsoft Security Essentials and Advanced SystemCare 4 to keep it running smoothly. The problem I'm having is that the laptop battery is not charging.  I have the AC adapter plugged in and the battery is in place but the battery icon on my laptop says "Plugged in, not charging."  The power level is at 0% because I drained the battery to see if it would fix the issue but it did not.  I have tried various methods found on multiple websites to fix this issue, but most of those methods were specifically geared for issues involving Windows Vista and did not fix my problem anyway.  Some of these methods include reseating the battery and adapter in numerous progressions along with shutting down and rebooting the laptop as well as disabling the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery driver in my Device Manager and re-enabling it.  As I have said, none of these methods worked.  The adapter itself works because I have tried running my laptop solely on AC power with the battery not attached and it runs fine, and it also shows ... Have an Asus ultrabook laptop with an Atheros 9485WB-EB wifi/BT adapter. When I'm away from home, it works perfectly. At home, it sees our home network but refuses to connect to it - just get a cannot connect error.

It used to work fine, and then it's gradually gotten worse. At first rebooting the laptop would make it work for a while, then that quit working. Now it's just non-fuctional at home.

Home wifi works fine with other devices as well, and if I plug a USB wifi adapter into the laptop that works too.

Home router is (I forget the model, have to look when I get home) running dd-wrt. Rebooting the router doesn't fix the problem.

Any idea what would make it quit? No setting have been changed on the router during all this.

What you need to do is to properly fill out your system specifications so that everyone here who helps will have some idea of what your configuration is. then running some diagnostics so that it can be determined what exactly is going wrong with your windows 7 installation.

The ingredients: cable modem, Trendnet 5 port ethernet (not wireless) hub, laptop running current version of OS X Leopard PPC, PC running XP SP2

The hub went in yesterday. Cable modem is in port 1
OS X laptop is in port 2. OS X found a connection with no problem.
XP box is in port 3. XP says, 'weak connection' and delivers nothing.

And I am dead in the water. The Network Setup Wizard on XP advises tells me to turn off file/printer sharing so Windows Firewall can protect the computer. Other sources on the web tell me that Windows Firewall is a joke, and that any third party firewall is a better choice. File sharing is an integral part of having a network at home, I thought.

What am I missing? Before the hub, I was just turning off the cable modem and switching ethernet cords. It was not an elegant system, but it worked.

Do I need to designate one computer as an always-on server? I prefer not to do that. All I want to do is share the cable connection, and occasionally move some files.

Answer:Solved: cable, ethernet, OS X fine, XP a mystery

What is the exact error message you receive and how is your network configured?

I have a Lenovo W500 thinkpad laptop that I had to replace the hard drive on and I tried reloading xp Pro with the recovery cd's but it keeps giving me a stop error message and so I tried another hard drive same thing but it will let me load ubuntu 9.04 and 10.14 on both hard drives but it won't windows XP. Does anyone have any ideas?

Answer:can't load window XP but ubuntu works fine on Lenovo laptop

Hi and welcome to TSF

Not all "recovery" disks contain a full operating system, they merely access a
hidden partition on the original hard drive.

I know this topic has been discussed before but none seem to be the same as my situation.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1545.  When turned on I get nothing on my display.  Connecting to an external display works fine.  Here are the current steps I have taken without any results:
1.  Tried the memory swap display.
2.  Checked fuse on motherboard.  OK
3.  Installed new cable.  No change.
4  Installed 3 known good displays....same part number that was in laptop as original.
5. Installed 2 new good change.
6. This is an LED monitor  so no backlight or inverter.
7. Removed keyboard....pressed on all the "known" areas that people have mentioned on this forum.
Connect is to an external monitor and all is good.  Try the FN key an the F1 no change.....Sure could use some more ideas as I am completely out.

Answer:Inspiron 1545 no display on laptop, external works fine

This is a bad GPU (yes, they can fail in such a way as an external display works but the internal doesn't) or a bad mainboard - effectively the same thing, since one needs to be replaced to fix the other.

My laptop works fine on diagnostic tools or on other bootable pendrive. It turns off after window logo appears. I try to boot with safe mode but on disk.sys it turn off again. Every time it turn off

Go into BIOS by tapping F10 as you power up and run the hard drive diagnostic routine and post back the results. The logical answer is you have a bad hard drive.

My laptop, a Gateway NV57H, starts up fine, but after 10 minutes or so it becomes incredibly slow and everything is unresponsive. I used to get a bluescreen (kernel_inpage_error) after it being in this state for a while, but I researched it, ran a memory diagnostic, and found out one of my sticks of RAM was fried. Replaced both, doubling the capacity to its limit (8GB) and I still have the problem. When task manager is open during all of this, it shows that I'm only using 1.6 GB of the 8GB of RAM available, so I don't think that's the problem. I ran chkdsk and sfc /scannow from the command prompt, both said there were no errors found on the hard drive. I've ran malwarebytes from safemode a couple of times, it found some trojans and potentially unwanted programs and such that I quarantined and deleted. that didn't seem to fix the problem, and scans now come up clean. I'm running another now, just in case. The laptop runs fine in safe mode, no lag and no errors. I researched some other threads where people had similar problems and they said it was caused by having two antivirus software trying to run at the same time. I have kaspersky, but it's outdated. I turned off windows defender because it was trying to scan, and then started back up and the problem still wasn't fixed. Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be and how to fix it? Thanks!

Answer:Laptop becomes unresponsive after a few minutes, works fine in safe mode

If you don't have an antivirus program running at all times, you need to fix that ASAP.  Two good free ones are Avast and AVG.  MSE, Microsoft Security Essentials is another free one.
To further inspect your system, please download and run Speccy from here: .  After running it click File -> Publish snapshot... Copy and paste the link it gives you into your next post.
Good luck.

I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise (6.1 bld 7601 sp 1) on a Dell Latitude E7470 laptop at work. I've had this laptop for ~6 months.
For about 2 weeks it has been blue-screening when it's not in the dock, even with no peripherals in use, regardless of location (office or home, etc.). When it's in the dock purrs like a kitten: No crashes, no performance issues, nothing.
Our help desk ran all the diagnostics on it and found no hardware issues. Their recommendation is to set me up with yet another laptop (the current one replaced another bad laptop I got 6 months before that). I would prefer to identify the issue and see
if it can be fixed. It doesn't appear to be related to software, drivers, etc. or settings on the machine. They have looked at the many dumps for clues but nothing shows a clear answer.
No new software or peripherals have been installed during or just prior to this time.

Thank you for any suggestions.

I recently reinstalled BF1942 on my Windows 7 64-bit laptop, and to my dismay, the game doesn't start up anymore! It used to work fine on my laptop, until I installed a mod on it (with which the game ran fine) and altogether decided it was just cluttering my computer and uninstalled it.

Another whammy is that I installed the game on my other PC with the same OS, and just runs perfect! Except that computer is a shared one so I can't adopt it 24/7.

When I put the disk in, or otherwise click the icon, the disk drive makes a series of short staccato noises (unusual, i might say), and then the screen goes dark, as if the game is starting up, but then the screen changes in varying shades of black, and I'm reverted to my desktop again!

I reinstalled it a couple of times, but the same thing happens, and at first when i wanted to install or uninstall or play the game (after the problem) Avast would suggest I do this in a sandbox, yet I've installed this game on so many computers that I know there could not be a threat with the game itself!

Can you guys please help me? I really want to play this game again.

Answer:Battlefield 1942 won't start up in laptop, yet works fine on another computer?

Is the other computer 32-bit or 64-bit? The tempature could easily be getting hot. I'd reccomend getting SpeedFan HERE to check

Dear Experts,
I am having Dell Laptop Inspiron 1525, purchased in August 2008.
2 days back machine didnt shutdown. I did shutdown using power on/off button.
After that my laptop freezes after 3 to 4 mins of start up.

I used Regpair setup to fix registry errors on 10th March '12

Please help.

Answer:Laptop freezes after 3-4 mins of startup, safe mode works fine

When safe mode works fine but a normal boot fails, it usually means that a driver is at fault... I would suggest that you run a disk check. You can set it up in safe mode in Computer, and right click on the C drive. Select Properties, tools, check now. Check both boxes for trying to repair... Restart normally

6 inch thick white lines down my laptop screen. 2 of them are solid white the others are fairly transparent but very noticeable, spaced out across the whole screen. The laptop itself works perfectly and the lines have been there a long time. There was only 1 to start with but its gotten worse over time. I am using an external monitor and play games a fair amount without any problems. I am wondering is this a screen or inverter issue or will i need a new motherboard for my laptop for a new graphics chip?

Answer:6 inch thick white lines down my screen but laptop works fine?

If you know about how to open inside the laptop, first check out the connection cable is seated properly between screen and mobo. But mostly times, you have to replace screen. There is no problem on Motherboard and screen inverter.

Hi All,

I have a problem with my S1 in that if I boot it up, nothing appears on the screen, no promt no loading screen nothing. However if I plug a monitor in it the display appears on the monitor (laptop screen will still be blank) if I press FN & F5 nothing happens.

I hadnt made any changes, just hadnt used it for a while, last time i used it was on a big screen.

Can anyone help, its driving me mad?

Answer:Tecra S1 blank laptop screen, but monitor plugged in works fine.

I would recommend you to contact a servicepartner from toshiba, since the problem of your machine maybe just a loose cable is.

I had a friend with the same problem and they refitted the displaycable, after refitting everything was OK.

When I type in the IP address I belive it to be it just gives me the old 'page cannot be diplayed' error.
You may ask why I am playing around if it all works, well when I first set it up I didn't secure it (yes my head is looking down in shame) and I'm just trying to secure the signal.

Any idea's would be most handy!

Dell Latitude D520 running Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3. Everything about this laptop works fine except for its wireless ethernet. Even the wireless ethernet works fine when accessing the internet and when downloading files; but, when accessing the LAN, I get 'access denied' sometimes and other times I get sl-o-o-o-o-w transfers of files and messages telling me the files I'm copying or running are corrupt.

Example: I attempted to copy a file across my LAN to this laptop. On the WiFi, it copied very slowly for about 10 minutes or so and finally aborted when the bar graph showed about 20% complete. On the wired ethernet, the same file copied successfully in about 12 seconds.

I've checked the settings for the wired and wireless NIC and I can't find any differences.

To be clear, the wired LAN does fine for both internet and LAN access. The wireless ethernet works fine for the internet and presents the problem only when accessing the LAN.

Answer:Solved: Wireless works fine for internet but not for LAN

do you have multiple machines on a lan that you are trying to transfer files from???

Looking for the best solution to get a miracast receiver on my tv. Looking for something that natively support project my screen I windows 10 that also projects sound and allows for extended mode(as opposed to being limited to mirror). I know most are wifi only so if there are any recommendations of ones that work well that would be helpful too.
I am looking for one that uses Ethernet as I know latency is much better over hardwire connection. I will be connecting wirelessly from my devices.
I have used an older Roku in the past, which worked well with my windows phone. But I never tested it with a windows 10 pc, and I'm not sure if it supports extended mode. I would hope that this feature may have been improved upon on newer Roku models.
I believe the amazon fire may also offer miracast capabilities. Not sure if they are limited to mirroring.
Looking for a budget friendly option. I have an xbox already so I don't necessarily need something with all of the apps. If it only did miracast that would be fine.
Lastly I have apple devices in my home. Anything that supports both miracast and airplay natively would be a huge plus. From my research this seems to be impossible to find. Anything that claims to work for both environments usually requires some software download like airparrot.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks everyone.

Answer:Looking for good ethernet miracast reciever that works with windows 10 extended desktop

I'm confused...if you need an ethernet cable miracast adapter, doesn't that defeat the purpose? Why not just use an actual video cable? Wouldn't both devices have to be hooked up to an ethernet cable for this to work?

Friend bought an Acer laptop E5-575-54SM Intel i5-6200U; Windows 10 Home; 4GB RAM; 1TB; WiFi featuring MU-MIMO.

When I connected it to his WiFi network it was very slow. I ran a speedtest. It only gets 1 Mbps where it should be 20 Mbps.

I connected my iPhone to the network but got the same results. So, I assumed it was a problem with the WiFi. However, a different laptop (Toshiba) does get the 20 Mbps speed via WiFi.

Well, that is just not possible.
Since my iPhone was also slow, I know the problem is with the network.
But, since the old Toshiba laptop connects fine, the DSL modem and WiFi router are okay.

Two days later, the new Acer was running fine on the network, only to come to a crawl today.

I am stumped.

I have searched for this problem and can't find it anywhere. Every few minutes my IBM Access Connections keeps shutting down, then restarting all by itself. While I was using Skype on my Desktop Computer today to call my friend I used the microphone of the headset and I used External speakers.

In the middle of our conversation I did not get any sound from my speakers anymore, but the microphone still worked fine.

My computer uses the on-board audio sockets. I do not have a separate soundcard.

Help! What's wrong?

I tried restarting, checking the inside of the CPU for dust and possibly other problems. I tried changing speakers but it still wouldn't work. The motherboard is fairly new.. a little more than 6 months and doesn't have a guarantee on it anymore.

There is one thing i noticed though, sometimes when I touch the CPU I get an electric shock. So I put a wire from the casing to the wall (a friend suggested that). Might there be something wrong with the grounding and have blown my onboard audio out thing?

Please Help!
Thanks in advance.

Answer:Solved: Help! No sound from onboard audio out, but mic works fine.

Never heard of getting a shock from a case. Did you put the ground wire on before or after this happened? Double check your Sound Properties in the Control panel and make sure there isn't anything muted.

I'm totally stumped and picking your brains on this issue people!

I'm setting up an Intel Atom D525 / 525DW cube machine with Windows 7 x64 and whenever I switch the integrated graphics in the bios to the PCI graphics Windows takes between 30+ minutes (even a couple hours), cursor visible, to finish booting to display the log on prompt; however, when I switch to the integrated graphics the system boots as it should, but I need the PCI graphics card to operate on dual monitors.

Process from restart to windows fully booted on PCI:

*Posts fine
*Text "Starting Windows & Flag" ... roughly 10-15 minutes
*Black screen , system activity light flashing (not in sequential order as ie: ". .. . .. ." implying a system failure) / busy *working* for about 5 minutes.
*Black screen with cursor ... at this point it will take about 30+ minutes to finish booting.

When Windows XP was installed there were no issues, also no issues (slowness / latency) reinstalling or repairing from CD, but decided to upgrade since XP EOL is near. The first thing I noticed was that the installation process was also very slow, from the start even booting from the CD,... took roughly 12 hours to complete with having used the PCI graphics card. I'm sure if I had done the installation using the Internal Graphics card there wouldn't have been any issues with system latency.
*I've installed the nvidia graphics drivers for the external card.
*Intel chipset drivers f... Read more

I've gone through the usual searches, but the one thing that is different here is that the netbook still works. I can hold a mini-mag lite up to the screen and it everything is still working.

I did try to update the bios, I don't know which version I have, but I figured it couldn't hurt. My battery is also stuck in the "won't charge because I let it go down too far" status. The new bios was supposed to fix that as well. New version is 3310. I made a bootable flash drive (I think, I'm not sure if I did it correctly as I've never done that before) and attempted to update the bios. It's not doing what Acer and just about everyone else with a how-to says it should be doing.

After about 30 seconds, it just stops booting and starts. Perhaps it had updated the bios, I'm not sure.

But like I said, the computer is still working fine, just no backlighting on the screen so that you can see it. Make sense?

Anything I can do to see if there's just a loose connection or a solder joint I can redo? Thanks!

Been trying to solve for 3 weeks. As long as I dont restart or shut down pc, everything is pretty much ok (except for 2 minute delay when opening 'My Computer").
If I shut down or restart, after I get to my logon name it takes 25 mintues to get to desktop, where Im able to click on anything,. And even then, the start button and other menus take a few minutes to work. I have no problem getting online and using web but the start button and other clicks in menu take long.
So I discovered if I go into Safe Mode and make at least one change in MSconfig and restart in normal mode, everytihng boots up fine and there are virtualy no problems. Except that whne I make that change in Safe Mode I noticed that all my services are disabled whne I restart in normal mode so I have to reset them. All tihs is very time consuming. After the safe mode thing, restarting and resetting the services, the pc works fine again.
So basically Im ok if Im on 24/7.
I checked hard drive with SMART and its all ok, no damages.
Ran chkdsk. No problems.
Cleaned out temp files.
Ran all kinds of malware checks including spybot Search & Destroy (clean!), Adaware (clean!), BitDefender and a dew others. Bit Defender found one virus and removed.

I've been doing some online gaming (world of warcraft), and I kept getting these Error#131 issues. This would cause the game files to become corrupted and then I would have to repair, or reinstall. The WoW tech site says that chronic error #131 messages are either a Hard drive, Ram, or Motherboard issue.

Running the Windows Vista memory diagnostic tool has turned up some odd results, the initial test with a 1gb stick in slot #1 and a 1gb stick in slot #2 came back with errors. I then removed the ram from slot 2 and ran the test on slot 1 with 1 stick of ram.... no errors. I did the same with the other stick in slot errors. this lead me to believe that it was slot#2 giving me the issue so I moved the ram from slot 2 to slot 3, thus having 1gb of ram in slot 1 and 1gb of ram in slot 3. After a little while......error#131 appeared.

So I then tested both sticks in slots 1 and 3 together and came back with ram errors, I then tested both sticks in slot #1, and then again in slot #2 and both tests came back fine. Any ideas on what this issue could be? I know both sticks are the same brand, speed, totally identical.

Answer:Ram Works fine in single sticks, not working fine together :P

My internet works fine with the wire from modem directly connected into the laptop but when the wire from modem is connected to the router, I am not able to access the internet.
I tried to make my laptop (Running windows 7 64 bit os) as the router and i can easily access net on my other devices.

I thought there is a problem with my router. So I took my router to my cousins place who has the same ISP provider. And to my surprise ,my router worked perfectly there.
I cannot understand what i can do to fix my problem.
My ISP just provides me the wire , the modem is installed somewhere out. I just get the wire from the modem.

My ISP gives dynamic ip addresses. I have to login in the site every time i connect the wire to my ethernet port of the laptop.
I took the router to my friends place sharing the same ISP with the same package. My router worked fine there.
i brought his Belkin router to my home to check. And at my place, it didnt work.

Answer:Solved: My INTERNET works fine with my modem but very slow with the router (netgear,

I am researching this particular situation to see if it is possible, before we invest the time and money to go much further...
I have a corporate intranet that has desktops and wired access to network shares, etc. I also have a number of netbooks that have to operate in remote locations with no wireless or wired internet connectivity, using data loaded at the office.
I need to securely transfer database files to several netbooks in turn without using USB drives or other removable media, or wireless, which have the potential for loss, risking the data. A secure, wired connection is our preference.
Our plan is to use a USB to RJ-45 connector (such as an Apple USB Ethernet Adapter) to connect to the netbooks. Then, plug the USB in the desktop, and plug the Ethernet cable to the netbook's RJ-45 port. For proof of concept, we've done some initial testing with one device, and have managed to find modified drivers to get the Apple device to work under Windows 7, and looking at it's properties can see a successful Ethernet connection. Setting up the share is more complicated.
We control the hardware and software on each machine, so we intend to make an simple user-friendly GUI application to move the data back and forth (before and after its use at the distributed netbook locations). I suspect that this should be simply a mapping of the netbook as a drive, and copying to and from.
Can anyone provide any advice or guidance as to the best way to accomplish this? Any specifics on settin... Read more

Answer:Connecting a laptop to desktop using USB to ethernet while keeping desktop network connection?

I've done exactly the same thing with a client company in the past. In that case it involved transferring sensitive banking data to laptops which were to be used by the client's representatives in the field.
My preferred method, given the need for avoiding removable media, was the one you describe in your final paragraph; we instituted a policy of copying to a dedicated desktop and using a single authorised member of staff to disconnect the desktop from the network after the copy process, copying the data to the laptops, disconnecting them, deleting the desktop copy and reconnecting the desktop.
It worked smoothly, and was very secure, given that one person handled the process. As far as I know the client still follows the same procedure.
