Share a wifi connection through a laptop to a router

Question: Share a wifi connection through a laptop to a router

I know this sounds like a crazy question but i travel a lot and i like to play my PS3. When i go to a new hotel some have a open internet connection and others don't. I want to connect my laptop to the wifi and share it to a separate router with a WPA2-PSK so that i have a more secure connection on the play station. Now first is this even possible to do? I use to beable to share my internet connection from my phone through my laptop to my ps3. Now when i try to do that just with the wifi in the hotels it doesnt have a high enough security setting. any information will help.
Thanks a lot!!

Preferred Solution: Share a wifi connection through a laptop to a router

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Maybe, but some information could help more than others. What/who says not "a high enough security setting"? What OS are you using? Trying to bridge the connections or use ICS?

I have a wireless router (NETGEAR) at home for my laptop. I've had to buy a computer (Acer Aspire One A110) for my son to use at school next term (can you believe it?--he's only six years old!!) and I'm wondering how to set it up so that it uses the same router connection for internet. The main problem is that a technician originally came here to set up the router as I was having a few problems, and I'm not sure exactly what he did, or where to find the password etc. on my own laptop.I'd be very grateful if someone could take me through the steps of setting up a second connection using the one router. Thanks a lot,Florio

Answer:setting up second laptop on router WIFI connection

If he set it up why wont it now work?I would suggest setting it up wired then remove wire, turn on laptop wireless switch,go to taskbar and right click on the connection icon.Yours should be listed,so click your connection.

I am running a desktop using Windows XP Pro which is connected to a BTHub router via Ethernet which works fine. My son has a new laptop (wireless enabled) running Vista home - however he cannot connect wirelessly to BTHub in fact 9 times out of 10 it does not see it. I have religiously followed all instructions and triple checked everything but no joy. He is ok when connected to BTHub via ethernet. Any tips please.RegardsBoike

Answer:Vista laptop no connection to wifi router

Firstly I would uninstall the wireless adapter from device manager and reboot the system , if that doesn't sort it I would then manually update the drivers for the card to see if that makes a difference . Does the laptop use a utility from the manufacturer to make the wireless connection or does it use Vista to see and connect ? Ashley

I have a desktop and a laptop, both Windows 7 Home 64 bit, using Internet Explorer 11. The desktop is Ethernet connection, the laptop is wifi, the DSL router is wifi provided by AT&t. I really don't recall seeing the problem with the desktop, and I get it a lot with the laptop. But I don't use the desktop nearly as much.
The problem: a lot of times I will open IE 11 and click on one of it's news articles or something I want to see and it will not connect to the article or web site. I get a notice such as "The 2Wire 2701HG-B gateway does not currently detect a DSL signal". When I look at the lower taskbar where it shows wifi connections, it shows my 'handle' and says 'connected'. I'll have to close the browser, try to open it again, and after a bit I can usually get it to connect, but it sure is annoying. Occasionally I will right click and then click to open it in another tab and sometimes I can get it to open. But it seems like I have to keep fighting the connection issues. I have rebooted the router several times, it keeps happening. I'm running McAfee on the desktop, Microsoft Security on the laptop. This has been going on for months, I'm finally getting tired of it --any ideas to help is appreciated. I'm not that experienced with computers so it could be something simple and I just don't know about it. But any help is appreciated.

Answer:connection to wifi router from laptop intermittent

If possible I would connect the Laptop with an Ethernet cable and see if the problem continues. This will eliminate the Wi-Fi as a problem. From the error message it sounds like a DSL problem with you ISP

Hi! My hp laptop doesn't get signal from my belkin wireless router. It picks up my neighbor's unsecured signals, but mine says "local only". My ipod touch doesnt get any problem picking up my router's signal. I can only use the internet when i connect my ethernet cable. I don't see any problem with my router (coz the ipod picks it up), as well as my laptop (it picks up other signals!) so it's so frustrating!!! i also checked if it's compatible with vista (it is!) so i have no idea why they're not connecting!!!

my OS is vista

Belkin router...

im sorry but im not much of a techie... if you need more info, just send me a message here please.

any help is much appreciated.

Answer:my laptop doesnt get wifi connection from my router, only thru ethernet

Hi Jhaenine,

The problem seems to be with the wireless computer only. Because the other wireless device shows connected to the wireless network. To isolate this issue, please follow the steps given below:

1. Click on Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Manage Wireless Networks (on the left hand side of the page).
2. Remove all the preferred wireless networks if any listed on the page.
3. Click on Connect to a network > select your wireless network and click connect.
4. Type in the proper wireless security keys if prompted, that would show successfully connected to the wireless network.
5. Try going online and that should work. If the problem persists, please follow the steps given below:

1. Click on Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing Center > Manage Network Connections (on the left hand side of the page) > Right click on Wireless Network Connection > Properties > Highlight Internet Protoco Version 4 (TCP/IPV4) > Properties.
2. Select "use the following ip address" > type in the ip address in the range of (Where x refers to 2 to 254) > Subnet mask will be automatically and type in the default gateway as
3. Select "use the following DNS" > type in in the preferred and in the alternate DNS and click ok and ok.

That must work.

Thank you.

I have been trying for some time to accomplish the title result. I'm not techie enough to do it.

What I want is to be able to use a Tablet to read in the rear of my home (which is out of range for incoming wifi signal.)

If I can set up the computer to do this, I will cable connect to a router in that area.
I have two computers and could use either.

1.a PC running XP (should update to windows 8.1, but have never bothered to do that, since XP works just fine. (I had this computer sharing to the router, when I had DSL internet connection, using Windows wizard to set it up) Couldn't get it to work when I switched to WIFI internet access) I could switch to win 7 or 8.1 if that would help.

2. a Lap Top running WIN 8.1,

Any help is appreciated.

Hi. Can someone plese help me with this. I would like to take and existing web connection thats on a laptop and send it to a new Netgear wireless modem providing an internet connection for devices out of the wifi modem. My original connection is from a DSL modem and is connected via wifi to my laptop. Here is what i tried so far: The router i want to use now is connected to my laptop via Ethernet cable and goes into the Wan port of the router. First i simply turned on sharing on my existing wifi connection and the internet icon on the router is green but when i go to status of the router it says no web connection and devices such as an ipod don't receive any internet. Next i tried to bridge the connection but that did not work either even though my laptop showed that they were bridged.

Please help as i have spent 8 hours on this already.

Thanks in advance

just curious if I could share cable connection by WiFi so it could be used by a smartphone as well. I don't have a hw router however I have a laptop connected to cable modem. The question is if I can somehow setup Windows to share the broadband connection by it's WiFi adapter. If possible, please for a howto guide. Thanks.

Answer:How to share my cable connection by WiFi

You can share the connection if it's a WiFi to WiFi shared connection but a hosted wireless connection isn't made to share Ethernet to WiFi.

The link below explains the process and has links to show you different ways to set up a hosted wireless network.

Hello all,

Okay hear is the problem that I am faced with... I have a Virgin Mobile MC760 3G broadband device, I want to share that 3G internet connection with my D-Link DIR-615 router so that I can connect to the 3G over WiFi on my other devices.

The host computer that the 3G device would be plugged into is running Windows XP version 2002 Service Pack 2.

I realize that they do sell 3G routers but I would like to use the D-Link DIR-615 that I already have to avoid buying another router. I also realize that it may be easier to share the connection by creating a wireless network on the host computer and then enable internet sharing, I don't want to do this I need to share the connection through the router.

I don't know if it is possible to do this but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Is it possible to share a 3G connection through a router?

You will need a second network card on the PC so that you can connect it to the router and use Internet Connection Sharing.

I have wire ADSL connection. I want share my internet connection with my phone (Android) using WiFi. I think its useless thing change my ADSL router. So are there any devise to distribute my Desktop computer internet connection via WiFi using USB port? Like Bluetooth dongle.

Answer:How to share computer Internet connection as WiFi?

I'm doing exactly that right now I have a Realtek USB WiFi 'dongle' (it says Dynamode 11N USB Adapter on it, but it uses Realtek stuff). The internet gets to my computer via my old phone, tethered via USB. It then goes through the computer and out the USB wireless adapter to my newer phone and iPod as WiFi.
I'm afraid I don't know the exact model of mine, but it looks just like this. (In Devices and Printers it shows up as RTL8188S WLAN Adapter). I just installed the drivers and bit of software, then in the software clicked on the 'Mode' tab, wher I could switch it from 'Station' to 'Access Point'. I could then choose which internet connection into the PC that it shared, set up a WEP key etc. and then share the connection throughout the house.
hope I helped

(I'm pretty sure the one in the link is the one I have, as it looks identical and they don't list any other similar items)

The strange thing is that I didn't change the router settings and that my drivers are working fine.

Is it possible that the ISP change their setting and decided not to allow internet sharing anymore?

When I tried ping or tracert, it says request unreachable. But when I directly connect the modem to the LAN card, internet works fine.

I don't know how you'd use a standard broadband router for this task. My guess is that you'll need to consider either ICS and a host Windows system, or perhaps a Linux rig of some sort. Since you have some sort of broadband, why not just increase the speed of that service and forget about the satellite connection?

As per the picture and title, I have a windows 7 with a wifi card for internet access. I have an XP tower right next to it connected via ethernet cable to the 7. Both XP and 7 are professional editions (64bits).

I want the XP to have internet access like a normal computer through this set up.

Side story to this set up: They're both Dell Poweredge 2900s I acquired that I use as workhorses for processing high volumes of data. They're located in my basement and the router is on the third floor (therefore wifi). They are remotely controlled from the third floor where my office is. This is all home, not for business/ professional.

The poweredges have a 1gig per second ethernet port, and I mean to share lets of data back n forth between them so the ethernet cross-cable is crucial.
Can this be done? Could you walk me through it? I've tried to solve it from different angles without any success so far.

I've tried ICS without success. I think all that came out of that was shared folders between the two PCs. I've tried bridging the WiFi/LAN which disables ICS. Nothing worked so far so I probably missed a step or did something wrong.
Thanks in advance.

We have a Dell Lattitude E5540 running Windows 8.1 Professional connected to an Active Directory domain. The laptop has the latest drivers and BIOS, including the driver for its Dell Wireless 1506 802.11b/g/n (2.4Ghz) adapter.
At the login screen, we can connect to our wireless network, which uses WPA2 with AES encryption, to allow loading roaming profiles. However, we have to type in the key for the network every time because clicking "Connect Automatically" doesn't
work before login. Upon logging in to the machine, the wifi connection is broken, and we have to manually reconnect even though the profile for the connection exists and it is not necessary to re-type the key for the connection. Again, "Connect Automatically"
does not work. In addition, the wireless connection cannot be shared; it's indicator for "Network Availability" is always "Me only". Also, the network status on the "View Network Settings" pop-out is always "Limited"
even though its status in the Network Connections window is "Internet Access" and "Domain Network", and the icon in the notification area is the one used for wired networks instead of the stair-step icon for wireless networks.
Things I have tried:

Deleting the profile for the wireless network for all users of the machine and reconnecting.Updating the driver. (In fact, I updated several drivers and the BIOS.)Deleting the adapter fro... Read more

Answer:How can I share a internets wireless connection to lan via router

First off you really don't need that router. Second you have to use Internet Connection Sharing which basically turns your Host computer into a router for other devices that are connecting through it. You would need a switch to connect more then one device and that router can be made to work as just a switch.

Hey everyone,

I have been having a LOT of issues with Time Warner Cable recently. Yet again, my internet is out. They will be sending a tech out tomorrow to resolve the issue.

While I have my macbook and can connect to my cousins internet nextdoor, my dad is out of luck. Here's an idea that came into my head...I just don't know if it will work...

In the past, I could connect to my cousins wireless internet, share it over the mac's ethernet port and then connect a PC to the macbook. This will give that computer an internet connection.

I was wondering, could I do the same thing, but instead of connecting a specific computer to the macbook, could I connect my router's WAN port to the macbook's ethernet port. I figured this would kind of make the macbook act as a modem.

I did give it a shot, and the router's data light WAS blinking. However, the computers connected to the router could not get an internet connection. Is there anyway I can make this happen so all of the computers have access for the next 24 hours?

The one thing I noticed is that the mac was giving it's ethernet port and IP of 169.x.x.x. Could that be a problem?

Any suggestions of if I can get this to work is appreciated!

Answer:Share laptops wireless connection for router?

The problem with doing as you suggest is that you have no DHCP server on the network segment between the Macbook and your router. Does the mac have the ability to bridge the network adapters ( wireless and wired) like windows does? If it does, then I would connect the wired port on the macbook to a LAN port on your router. This would effectively make your router operate as a switch that is an expansion on your cousin's network. You would have to turn off the DHCP server on your router.

I want to share my internet connection to the wireless router just for the wireless feature, sure I could connect the ethernet cable to the router but the router is 10/100 and my internet connection is 1000 so I'd lose a lot of speed. I have 2 network cards in my PC and I've connected the ethernet cable to one of my network cards and another cable to my second network card and to the wireless's router internet socket.
I tried selecting the Local Area Connection that has the internet and tried the "allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection", but then I can't access the modem through

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Any help on how to achieve this ?

Answer:I want to share the internet connection from PC to a wireless router

Connect the 2nd router to one of the open ports of the first router, this makes it then setup the wifi. That leaves three ports open on the first router that is 1000.

Is it possbile to hook up another computer to the switch via eithernet and also use the connection? Hi! I looked through the tutorials and didn't see anything quite like this so I'm wondering what needs to be done to get this working.

I had C0X internet hooked to my modem, had the modem hooked to my wired router and the router distributing the internet to my desktop and two xboxs, and my laptop was just picking up free wireless internet (much faster than what i was paying for!).

So I canceled my C0X subscription and I'm wondering this: can I receive wireless internet for free on my laptop, then send this signal via ethernet cable to my router, and have the router distribute the signal to my desktop pc and my xboxs? i'll attach a picture of what i'm talking about if you need it.

the laptop is winxp sp3 and the desktop is win 7 x86 ultimate...

i ran the internet connection sharing wizard on the laptop on the wireless connection and went to use the usb drive to configure the windows 7 but it says 'netsetup.exe is not a valid win32 application'... so i'm not sure where to go from here... in the network map on 7 ultimate it lists the desktop, the switch, the gateway and the xboxes, but it says no internet...if there's already a link i missed or someone who's done this successfully, please let me know.. thank you!

I have a Netgear DG834GT wireless modem router for machine 1 and a WG111T usb adapter to connect machine 2 to the router. Now however we have a cable connection, and this is an ADSL router, so there's no way to use it as a modem right? Here's my setup;Computer 1 has cable internet accessComputer 2 has nothingSince the router and usb adapter can communicate, but the router is ADSL so won't work with my cable connection, is there a way to put the router on Computer 2 and somehow have it take the role of the USB adapter, to connect to the USB adapter on computer 1 which will be taking the role of the router? So Computer 1 (with internet access) connects to the router on Computer 2, "feeding" it a connection to the internet? No idea if this is possible... does anyone?

Answer:Netgear USB+Modem router = Share CABLE connection?

DON'T try to use your combined ADSL Modem/Router with Cable broadband, because it just won't work. Its WAN port is a phone connection - you need a "Cable/DSL Router", which doesn't incorporate a Modem, and which has an ethernet WAN port for connection directly to the Virgin Cable Modem's ethernet port.If you don't want to buy a Cable/DSL Router, you can connect the two computers directly, either with a *crossover* ethernet cable or in an "Ad Hoc" wireless network, and then enable "Internet Connection Sharing" on the actual internet connection (modem connection) in the PC that is online.

My PC connects to the internet through a Netgear RangeMax access point. My roommate's computer, which is a few feet away from mine, gets poor signal and we are getting latency issues in WoW on her computer (while mine has none) and we both have the same wireless NICs (US Robotics). However, my signal is good and I have no issues in WoW.

Is there a way I can simultaneously connect to wireless and my Linksys wired router and connect her computer to the Linksys and share my internet connection through it somehow?

Assuring that the WLAN AutoConfig service is running.Deleting the profile for the wireless network for all users of the machine and reconnecting.Updating the driver. (In fact, I updated seve... Read more

Ok here's the situation:
I just moved into a student apartment. The internet is already activated and it is available through the RJ45 jack straight off the wall. Using an Ethernet cable I am able to use Internet without any issues with my PC.

What I want to do:
- Use my Buffalo ADSL router/modem to share the connection: both wired and wireless.
- Use my router as local DHCP to create a private network with my home devices.
- Be able to access both the internet and the router without having to unplug anything.

The setup:
- There is no way to use a DSL (phone) cablein the house so I have to plug the Ethernet cable carrying the connection in one of the LAN port of the router.
- My PC use another free LAN port.

The issues so far:
- I am only able to share the connection through the LAN ports of the router.
- Wireless devices are able to connect (it even read "Internet access" in the tray bar) but are unable to browse. It can't resolve proxy and always time out.
-When the Ethernet cable is plugged into the router, the router itself becomes unavailable. I'm assuming the connection has its own gateway somewhere else and prevents me from accessing the router.
- I effectively don't have any private network anymore.

edit: another weird thing I noticed. On my laptop anytime I try to connect to a wireless network it connects to 2 networks at the same time. One with the proper SSID and the other "Unidentified network"

This is a strange one. I have an Acer netbook, Win7 Starter, which will access the internet fine, and which will view share folders on the LAN fine. But if I open up a share folder and view its contents in explorer, the machine will freeze within ten seconds.

Using ethernet, there is no problem.

I've updated drivers. Acer only had version 14, but the Intel site had version 16. This is an Intel N 100 wifi card.

I also swapped cards from another same model Acer, with no change.

The card's settings seem fine. File sharing is turned on on both machines. I'm not even framing the why's of this problem very well at this point.

I was wondering if it was possible to share a connection from my laptop that has a LAN card and a wireless card, so another laptop can get wireless acess from my computer when its connected to a LAN.

Are there any tutorials out there that will guide me through this?

I am using Windows XP.

Answer:share wireless connection from laptop to allow other laptop access

With XP its pretty easy. Just set up "Internet connection sharing" By the sound of it, you should config your laptop to use the internet. With the wireless card, right-click it, go to properties, go to advanced, check the option for sharing the connection.

Configure the other card to ad-hoc to your laptop to connect to your laptop via wireless and you should have an internet connection.

Answer:Unable to share the Internet from a laptop through a router

Hello! Sadly, for all intents and purposes, it just doesn't work like that. I'm not saying it's impossible, because I have read how techies have made this happen - but it requires an insane amount of configuration, 3rd party software, a little programming, and a good grasp of linux. The router has to have the internet connection to share out to other computers. Go and get a wifi hotspot instead of a 3G USB device. The wifi hotspot, depending on the provider, should support up to 5+ connections. Another option is the see what ISPs are in your area, get service at your residence, then you could use the router. Hope this helps!

Two systems :
Desktop computer is WinXP hardwired to printer HP model #4215 .
Remote wifi laptop computer is running Win98 SE.

Both computers can ping each other .

Laptop can see Desktop PC and the HP printer All in One Printer with a cable drawn underneath the icon .

Win XP desktop has printer set to share with hand underneath it.
Another laptop running win xp does wifi print to the hp 4215.

A chat with HP tech informed me that it was impossible for laptop running win 98se to wifi network print share to the hp4215 printer that is usb connected to the win xp desktop.
This does not sound believable.

Can someone assist ? Does this sound plausible?

The HP tech said that win 98se will not print share with win xp if hp 4215 hp printer is used .
I am supposed to get a transcript of the web chat which I would be happy to post here.

I tried to wire the console and the laptop via ethernet, and bridge the ethernet and wireless connections in the 'Network Connections' page of the Control Panel, but I get the message:

"An unexpected error occurred while configuring the network bridge"

Any idea why this is happening, or if there is a better way to go about this? I also have an external USB wireless adapter at hand, just in case I would need another different wireless connection.

The problem is that whenever she opens up her laptop and starts using the net it kills my connection, i simply drop off the line. It never happens to her connection if we vice versa it either.

Not overly sure what the go is, ive had a tinker with the settings on the router and can't come up with a solution. So i put it to your collective genius's to help me with the problem

Answer:Laptop and PC can't share wireless connection?

Let's see this for each of the computers when they're connected to the Internet, and yours when it's not.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

I have a pc and have just purchased a laptop.
Can you advise the best way to manage broadband on both.
without going for the dearer wireless connection.

I would like the one broadband connection for both and thus pay for the one connection
i have eircom broadband 2mb.

I thought I could plug out the broadband and in to the laptop[. I tried and cannot do this without transferring the account to the laptop.

I have searched the archive but am still confused.

I believe that you can join the two (pc and laptop) using a dedicated usb cable.
even with this i am lost.

If i join the two computers with the usb cable will only one machine have contact with the Internet at any one time.

Is it possible to have Internet on both machines at once.
Can you point to an item in the archive or a tutorial or if soneone wants to go through it step by step i would be very grateful.
Any help would be welcomed.

best regards

Answer:connecting a pc and laptop to share broadband connection

You need a broadband router, then you can have as many machines connected as you like. FWIW, a wireless router will be no more expensive than the wired models, and since this is a new laptop, it probably has wireless capability.

I'm building my desktop pc tomorrow and I have a leftover PCI wireless card from an older motherboard. My college dorm has only 1 ethernet port and I would like to be able to access the internet through my laptop and my desktop at the same time.

How can I access the internet through my laptop, if I want to use the wireless card to connect the desktop and laptop?

The connection would look like this:

[LAN port] <==wired==> desktop <==wireless==> laptop

I've tried doing it before and my laptop was unable to recieve a DHCP IP.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Answer:Share desktop's LAN connection with laptop through WLAN?

Pretty sure they'd have to be in ad-hoc mode, then you'd have to have some way to route the packets from the desktop out to your ethernet connection or just have a proxy server setup on your machine. Oh, and a statically set IP on the laptop.

Hi guys i need some help.

I have a laptop with windows7 installed and PC with windows xp installed.

I am using tp-link with a capability of wired&wireless modem router.

I connected my laptop via wireless and connected the internet, it is working properly.

When i connected to the xp PC via Lan connection. I can able to share the files.
But i am unable to share the internet connection.

What i have done so far
1. Checked the sharing option in wireless lan.
2.Checked the option sharing in broadband connection in laptop windows7.
3.Changed the properties of the local area connection in PC to ip address as (where windows7 laptop ip address is and subnet mask as
And leave other as blank

still it is not connecting to internet.

Answer:unable to share internet connection between laptop and PC

Sharing, as in networking, relies on the XP and 7 machines being assigned to the same 'workgroup' within each machines settings. Sharing in this sense is LAN side.

You do not need to bridge/share at adapter level at all. Let the TP Link device use it's DHCP server to enable connection sharing. Sharing in this sense refers to the WAN side internet connection being made available to both machines on the routers LAN side.

Although I am connected to our wireless network on the Folio 13, there is no internet connection. I can, however, connect to the internet via Wifi on two other household laptops, both of them HP, so I believe the problem is with the Folio itself. I can also connect to other computers on the network on the Folio, but something is preventing it from getting on the internet. I can only get the internet via hardwired ethernet connection on the Folio. I have tried the following fixes, multiple times, without success: -Run the Windows troubleshooter for Internet/Network. It says the connection between your access point, router, or cable modem and the internet is broken. (But not on other wifi computers here--works fine.)-Reboot/Reset the modem.-Disable/Renable the wifi adapter (Intel Centrino Wireless N 1030)-Update wifi adapter driver (it says driver is up to date)-Uninstall/reinstall wifi adapter-Remove Wifi Network from list of available networks; reboot, add this network back in-Roll back all Windows updates from the past month-Searched self-help forums for a possible solution And yes, the wifi keyboard light is blue, not orange. Can someone help please?

Answer:I know its been answered, but need help with my wifi router connection

What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, Mcafee , AVG , Webroot etc

the ar5007 adapter has had issues with vista - but it maybe worth checking for a new driver anyway

1st try the PC manufacturers website then we can use atheros website

whats the make and exact model of the PC

ick on the blue tick mark in the column under your windows version.
This will open another page for that particular adapter and that windows version.

Now click on the download button labelled " Click to Download " and wait, the file will download - you do not need to click on any other buttons to get the download started

Assuming that after all the above the wireless still does not connect to the internet, all I can suggest is to use wireless security of WEP or to get an external USB wireless card.

Please post a reply here , and keep us informed of the situation and how you finally resolved the issue.

To install the driver you will need to do the following

Extract the downloaded zip file into a folder on the PC

> Start Globe
> Control Panel
> System and maintenance
> Scroll down to Device manager
> network adaptors, click on the + >
> Right click on the AR5007(EG) Adapter
> click on Update Driver Software...
> click on Browse my computer for driver software

So I accidently bent my Belkin surf and share WiFi adapter on my desktop, and the internet cut out. I assumed it was broken, so I plugged it into my laptop and turned the wifi switch to off to test it out. Strangely, it worked fine. Then I attempted other USB ports on my tower, none of them worked. The strange thing is I can see all of the available wifi networks, but can't connect to them. I tried uninstalling the drivers, restarting, and reinstalling but that doesn't seem to work. The chip is fine, as it worked on my laptop, but it refuses to work on the tower.
Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Share laptop and desktop connection/alltel aircard

Connect the two PCs directly with an ethernet cable; if neither port is auto-sensing it must be a cross-over.

Or if you want to use the router as a switch follow these instructions, with your PC with the internet access being the primary. You will not need a cross-over cable.

JohnWill's procedure for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

Connecting two SOHO broadband routers together.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses through, I'd assign the secondary router as it's IP address.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

Simple question and I should know the answer but I don't know where to go on my laptop can someone help me out please?

Answer:How can I share my phone's internet connection with my Windows 10 laptop?

First, you have to enable Mobile Sharing on your phone. If you're using a Windows Phone, swipe down from the top of the screen and enable Mobile Hotspot. If you've never used this feature before, take note of the network name and network password.
On your Windows 10 laptop, go into WiFi networks, this is down on the bottom right corner of your PC's screen, the system tray. Click on the WiFi network icon, and find the WiFi network with the network name of your phone. It will ask for a passphrase to log in, that will be the network password. Your laptop will bind to the phone's wifi network and you'll be tethered.
Please note that this may not work if your cellular provider does not permit it, or if they require you to upgrade to a different plan that includes tethering.

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

PING each remote computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. Open a command prompt as described above and type.

PING <ip address>
PING <computer name>

<ip address> - is the x.x.x.x IP address
<computer name> - is the computer name

A failure to PING is almost always a firewall configuration issue. Any failure to PING needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Note: You can obtain the IP address and computer name of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG /ALL. This should work for any Windows version. The IPCONFIG /ALL display will provide a wealth of useful information for debugging your network connection.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:

Computer Browser
DHCP Client
DNS Client
Network Connections
Network Location Awareness
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
TCP/IP Netbios helper

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic.

My old T42 connected to the same router and performing the same downloads obtains a speed of more than 500 KByte/s (i.e. ten times more).T400 config:- Intel Core 2 P8600 with 2 Gb RAM- Wifi adapter Intel 5100 Link with driver configured at defaul values- OS: Windows XP Professional SP2 The router is a 802.11b from Dlink: DWL-900 AP+ May you suggest some config value for the driver or the access point that can help solving this issue ?Thanks in advance,Fabio

I was wondering if / how to set up a wireless router to work with a WIFI network. My parents live in a park that has just added WIFI for Internet. What settings have to be set in a wireless router to have it connect to the WIFI system?

Answer:using a wireless router with a WIFI internet connection.

We need to know more about the WiFi Internet connection. Is it 802.11g, or do you have some sort of receiver?

I have a single internet connection running to my apartment, and it will only connect one computer to the internet... but I want WiFi, becasue the USB to Ethernet adapter for my MacBook Air is flaky at best and becasue, as an American, I want everything (but that part is obvious).

I have the internet running into my desktop. What I am trying to do is connect a WiFi router to the second NIC in my computer and use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to rout the internet through my desktop to the wifi router.

Problem is, I can't squeeze the internet out of the 2nd NIC card and into the router... help???

TLR; how do I use ICS to get the internet through a WiFi router?

Answer:Internet Connection Sharing to WiFi Router? Please Help.

Why would you do this? If you have a router just connect the WAN to it and then connect all your devices to the router. ICS is terrible and is to be avoided at all costs.

Hi guys,
I'm hoping someone can help with my ongoing wireless problems I'm having with Orange.
The laptops in my flat are wirelessly connected to a Netgear N150 Wireless router and the connection is forever going from little to nothing. I've tried resetting everything, getting Orange to replace the router (a new Netgear N150) but still nothing. I've tried changing channels in the past but never seems to last. I can't work out if another wireless router in another flat is chomping into our connection

I'm trying to connect my Dell desktop to my Sony laptop via a network cable. Neither computer is picking up that there is a connection. I've tried two different network cables both of which worked when I previously hooked up my laptop to other computers. I've even gone as far as installing a new network card in the desktop in case the existing port is knackered for whatever reason. All connections are enabled and all devices according to windows are working properly. Any idea's?

I have a PC and a laptop. both run win 8 and I have set up a homegroup with them both. The router is a NetgeaRr WNR2000 v2. Problem is that when the laptop is connected by wifi to the router and the PC is using an ethernet cable the 2 will not connect to each other. Both can reach the internet but only by cabling the laptop to the router can I share files from one puter to the other.
Is it possibl;e for this router to connect the 2 segments? should it happen automatically? if not what do I have to do? Any help will be gratefully received.

Answer:Netgear router issues. wifi to ethernet connection?

Sounds like you haven't set the homegroup set-up properly. It takes the generated password to set it up for homegroup on all PCs in the group.

Answer:Can’t use my broadband connection after setting up wifi router. Please Help.

It sounds like you just need to do a power cycle. To do that just follow these instructions:

First shutdown your computer. Next unplug the power cable from the back of the router and modem.

Second let everything sit for 1 to 2 minutes.

Third, plug the modem back in to the power cord. Let it power all the way up. Next plug the router back in, and let it power back up.

Last turn you computer on. Let it also power up. Next you will need to connect to a network. To do this you will need to make sure that your wifi is turned on. It usually turns on automatically, or there should be a switch to turn on.

After it is turned on you will see an icon near the clock that you can click on and then choose a network from. Once you are connected to a network open your browser and see what happens.

So basically - as the subject says -
Having a brand new Dell XPS 15 9550
with most recent Dell Wireless 1830 802.11ac drivers
cmd command "netsh wlan show drivers"
shows that current driver does not support hosted network,
meaning, that i am unable, for example, to share my ethernet internet connection Over wifi to other devices - i am unable to make my laptop a hotspot.
Which is ridiculous in 2016 and for a laptop of this level and is basically a prerequisite to be Windows 10 approved.
So my question is DELL, what the ***? When do we get normal drivers?
Anybody has the same issue - knows the workaround? Thanks.
I could not have expected that 2000$ laptop would not be able to do that. this is soul crushing.

Answer:Dell XPS 15 9550 - Dell Wireless 1830 802.11ac - Hosted network supported : No - cannot share Ethernet connection over WiFi

Am a new Networking BEE I had built a small network of 20 systems at my office and there I had connected a switch and router.

All the switch ports have been covered by all the systems and one port is given to the router

And also I connected a HUB to the switch ..

It works fine for my internet connections to all the systems but how do i make authentication of passwords and username to my network systems from one server which I use server 2003 at one system

let me know the detailed step by step procedure to build.........

I would feel very happy If at all any Suggestions for me to make my Business grow.....

As early as possible ................

Thanks in Advance

Answer:Connection of Router to Switch and also a Hub to Switch - N/W systems internet share

>>I use server 2003 at one system

you need to enable Network Login, but that requires that win2003 have

a domain controller
a DHCP service
and a DNS service.
the Domain Controller is just another name for LDAP and it becomes the control point
for all systems.

Hey all:

As of recently, I've been having issues with my Linksys WRT54GS router's wireless function. It has worked well for over a year, but I've recently started to have issues.

First, the router will have higher ping and packet loss than what they should be. For to the router will be approx 50-100ms on average, ping to a website (say, will be 150-200ms, and packet loss in either case will be 3-5%. Having run a couple of speed tests, I'm getting 3 Mbps out of what should be a 10 Mbps (downstream) internet connection. While still somewhat usable, these figures are not as good as what they should be.

Initially I noticed periods within which I would have extremely high packet loss (40-50%+), which would make the network practically unusable. I've had this happen for extended periods of time...but as of now it will occasionally happen for 2-3 minutes. It used to happen every few minutes...but now it's happening once or twice an hour.

I plugged my system into the wired router, and it appears to not have the issue with high ping that it does when connected to wifi. (Since the router is in one of my housemates' living space, I have been unable to test it for an extended period of time.) Furthermore, this does not seem to be a signal issue...I have the same problem whether I am sitting right next to the router or am on the opposite side of the house.

What could be the cause of the problem here? I initiall... Read more

Hello everyone.I have G510 laptop for almost 1 year and im still fighting with WiFi's connectivity problem.WiFi hardware id: PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_4365&SUBSYS_061117AADriver version: Windows 7 64 bit. When im in home and im playing internet games or watching youtube my connection randomly drop down, im getting lags and WiFi card loses connection with router (or turn off itself). All other devices in area: PC's, tablet, smartphones have connectivity with internet. I don't know what's going on - one day it works fine, next day it can drop connection multiple times. Its infuriating when you are playing online with friends or trying. Ping commands shows that sometimes ping to router is high: 60-90 (when mostly i get from under 1 to 2 ms) or few packets gets lost. When I lost connection I have to manually connect to the network, sometimes I need to restart WiFi card. It helps only for a few seconds - after them the problem occurs again. I have tried:Reinstalling card drivers + format and fresh install of system and all drivers,Unchecking saving power in properties,Setting WMM to disabled in properties,Disabling IPv6,Changing wifi channel on router,Uninstalling Lenovo Wireless Driver.I don't know what to do now. If you need more info (for example: from Event Viewer) - please write.

That hardware ID is referring to a Broadcom 43142 same in this thread.
Can you try the Microsoft Basic Driver as indicated in the thread and observe.

I have a problem with my device Toshiba Satellite P50-C-18C: the WIFI connection drops unexpectedly and randomly. When this happens, restarting the laptop is not helping, the only way to solve it is to power off and restart the router.

The laptop has Intel Dual Band Wireless - AC 3165 as the WIFI card. I had updated the driver constantly, but the problem still remains.

Any ideeas?

Hi.A bit strange problem has occurred on my Y550.When trying to connect y550 to a D-Link DIR-301 router (whether via Ethernet or WiFi), the connection on router crashes and becomes invisible to other computers for a short period of time. Then connection stands up but overtime y550 attempts to get through it crashes over and over again.Y550 connects to router (sometimes there is access to the Internet - sometimes connection is limited) but only for a few seconds before connections crashes. It works fine on any other router I've been using e.g.. Asus.At first I thought this problem was caused by assigning dynamic IP but after setting up it to static values the problem still occurred. I have checked any possible issues with power management (on network adapters, power plan, with and without battery). Drivers update also did not bring any effects.Ip config shows nothing, as if it was not connected (I called it during that short period when y550 was connected)Eventually I found out that connection works fine in Safe Mode so this must be some software/driver issue.I've used one key recovery and brought y550 to it;s original fresh out-of-the-box state and problem still occurs (even after updating drivers again. No drivers available via helps.I've read nearly 3/4 of the entire Internet seeking for solutions - couldn't' find anything. One step left for me to check is remove Intel software which manages connections.Any ideas guys?

I want to use a separate wifi router with my Comcast cable modem that has a built-in wireless router. I want to improve speed and also use a better firewall.

Am I correct that if I put the Comcast cable modem into bridge mode, I can still address it via it's IP address, which for me is

So should I set up the separate wireless router as Will this device also get an external IP address on the Comcast WAN?

Hello, could anybody tell me if it is possible to set up a laptop as a wireless server (not adhoc connection) and if so how?

Answer:Using a laptop as a wifi server/router/AP

Unless you plug a "Wireless Access Point" into the laptop's RJ45 ethernet port to create an "Infrastructure" network, then you would have to use an "Ad Hoc" wireless network. A stand alone Wireless Access Point usually costs about as much as a wireless router (which of course incorporates a Wireless Access Point), so unless you go with an Ad Hoc network, you should use a router.

Hey all.

I have foxfi and pdanet for my own personal use. Not too long ago they added a feature called wifi share that basically takes advantage of windows ability to turn your notebook into a wifi hotspot.
The main use case for this is using wired tethering from a mobile phone with unlimited data, and then using the notebooks ability to wifi share to get around the limitations of wifi tethering data caps through the mobile phone sans needing to pay more for the privilege.

I had a sandy bridge notebook from late 2011 where I could never get the feature to work right, got a newer and cheaper amd notebook to tide me over now when that one broke, and the feature works perfectly on this notebook. Incidentally, even though this is an amd notebook, the wifi adapter used inside is one of the newer intel wifi cards (7265).
Fast forward to today. I have a relative that has verizon but no home based internet for the moment. They had two lines and a mobile hotspot with capped data for just over 180, I had them cancel the hotspot and switch to unlimited. My intention was to hook one of their phones to their notebook directly and use foxfi/pdanet to provide internet, and then use the wifi share feature to create a network to hook up things like their smart tv.

Problem. It creates a network, but nothing can connect. Tried other smartphones, tried other tvs, it just stalls out with the connection.
I did the cmd prompt to check if there was support for a virtual network, there w... Read more

Dear Friends,

I am encountering strange issue while connecting my laptop to my home wifi router. I have 4 devices connected to router and working perfectly, but my Dell laptop suddenly stopped connecting to internet. It seems to be connected to router, but says No Internet Access. This is new issue, since it was working fine along with other 4 devices in the past.

Tried doing some basic steps, like - Removing the devices from Network Center and adding again, Reset the Router, ipconfig /renew ipconfig /release..but nothing works.

The funny thing is when I do a USB/Wifi Hotspot Tethering using same wifi with my Android phone, the Dell laptop connects to internet.

So, Its clear that Wifi Router is Good, Internet is Good, Laptop Network Card is also good, but something else is wrong. Please help.

So, I just got internet and cable at my apartment the other day. My roommate and I got Cox Cable and my roommate had a used Linksys router to connect to the modem. I'm not sure how the Linksys was set up (I'll get that information soon), but the internet worked for her without her having to connect her laptop to the router. When I tried to use the wifi, I was never able to connect properly. It would say that I was connected to the router, but that I wasn't able to use the internet. Then I tried to connect the laptop to the Linksys router with a ethernet cable and the internet worked. Also, after I unplug the ethernet I am able to use the internet, but the connection goes out every so often. I also wanted to use my PS3 with the wifi, but at this point I doubt it will work unless I find some solution. As for specs, the Linksys is a Model # BEFW11S4 ver. 4. Oh, and now my roommate is having the same problems now.

Ok, I have a host computer that uses DSL. It is connected to the internet through a Router, I use a LAN connection. I have the host computer connected to the router, and 2 more computers directly connected to the router. All 3 computers have internet access and work.

Now, I want to get my Laptop to run on the internet like the others. So I disconnected one of the 2 computers and put the plug into the router.

How do I create a new connection on my Laptop? I tried messing around, but I dont want to damage anything. It seems different on the laptop, than the two desktop computers. I use a Linksys router by the way (BEFSR41).

Please help, thanks!.

Answer:Solved: Creating a new Laptop connection through router? (laptop)

"... put the plug into the router"

Does this mean you connected the laptop to the router via ethernet cable?

And it doesn't connect?

Do the LEDs on the router and laptop light, indicating both ports recognize a cable connection? What Windows version on the laptop? Can you go into Network Connections, click on the LAN connection, and tell us what shows up in the Details section in the left pane (I'm assuming Windows XP)?
