Atheros Wireless Will Not Turn on

Question: Atheros Wireless Will Not Turn on

I have a Toshiba laptop, when I turned it on today I had a BSOD with an error related to Logitech driver. Uninstalled the Logitech driver and all was well, except that I no longer had wireless access. The system implies that the wireless adapter is not functioning.

Pressing FN-F8 does not turn anything on or off. I've updated to the latest driver from Toshiba.

I have no idea what to do next. And my desktop computer, as of this morning, no longer recognizes its hard drive. Not a good day technologically.

This is the laptop sysinfo

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Toshiba Satellite A75 with an Atheros AR5004g wireless network adapter. I am unable to connect to my wireless network. When I use ConfigFree it tells me my Wireless Communication Switch is turned OFF. My switch is turned ON, but the little light next to the switch isn't on like it normally is. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling it, Windows detects it, device manager says it's working properly. Tried updating drivers, tried rolling back drivers, put in my Toshiba Recovery disc, pressed the Fn F8 shortcut on the keyboard, tried restoring computer to a week ago, turned the switch off and on, turned laptop off and let it sit for 2 days, everything I can think of other than playing frisbee with it. I had this same exact thing happen about 6 months ago and was able to fix it. But, I was just getting my home network set up at that time and was having a few different issues and did a lot of troubleshooting, so I don't know what exactly fixed it last time.

Answer:Atheros AR5004g wireless network adapter won't turn on

Hey not-e-1,

Maybe the adapter or the indicator light is now defective.

If it's the light, try going to device manager, uninstall the adapter.

reset the wireless router back to factory default settings.

reboot the pc.

Don't use configfree but use Windows wireless utility instead.

Hi all!

I have a fujitsu notebook with a atheros wireless 5005g inegrated card. To make a long story short; when looking for wireless networks with the standard vista "wireless manager" I see full signal strength before connecting. After connecting it goes down to 2 (out of 6) levels. When using another computer connected to the same router, it receives full speed, both before and after connection. My wireless connection also disconnects alot, with a waiting periode of 30 seks or so before I`m able to reconnect.

I`ve seen similar problems (and solutions) for Linux users, but this does not help an average computer skilled guy like me.

My router is a Thomson Speedtouch 546i set up with wep security. (also tried Wpa etc)

appreciate all help I can get.

thnx

Answer:Low wireless signal with Atheros wireless 5005g

Hi Chrisdue,

To make a better analysis of your problem :
- does that other computer also run vista?
- which connection is lost ? to the router or to the internet?
- what is the driver you use for your wireless adapter? has it been signed ? did you look if any updates are available for the wireless card driver?

If internet connectivity is lost, I think upgrading the firmware of your router might be a good option.
If it's the connectivity to the router only we might need the information above to do a better troubleshooting.

Kind regards,
Stumpy

Basically, my problem is that my wireless adapter doesn't work. The adapter is under system specs on my page, Atheros 802.11 a/b/g/n Dualband Wireless Network Module. Device manager says the wireless adapter is working properly, and has the most recent driver. The adapter cannot, however, detect any wireless networks. My problem is almost the exact same as:

No networks

But I have different hardware and a different adapter. When I select troubleshoot, it tells me there might be a problem with the driver for the wireless network connection adapter. I am really confused, and had to grab my laptop to write this up. Thanks!

the atheros wireless card shows a full signal but when clicked on does not show the wireless network but states 'no link' and 'not associated'. This is in an Acer Travelmate 2420 running windows xp sp3 media edition. I have downloaded and installed the latest driver but can find no way of altering its status. I wonder if a service needed is disabled. I have made sure that the wireless service is on automatic and started. Can anyone suggest how to get this going?

Answer:atheros wireless card not associated

It probably means that the computer can see the wireless network, but does not have permission to join it.
Re-run the wireless network wizard in the control panel, and try to reconnect to the network. It should then prompt you for the security password for your network. Once that has been correctly entered you should be able to associate with the router.

I have a D-Link DWA 552 Xtreme wireless adapter, and to be quite honest with you, It has been a real drag having that thing. MY MBP gets 22MBPS but my Gaming pc gets 2.3MBPS. I got the current driver running from D-Links website but its still causing the computer to crash and get a real crappy internet speed. I will open another thread with more information about this problem and more specific. But the real question is will a updated Atheros Wireless driver help? Does Atheros have anything to do with D link? I read this in a diffrent post, just want some clarification. Thanks!

Answer:Atheros Wireless Drivers?

Its probably due to the fact that desktops prefer hard wire (CAT5) over wireless due to the ammount of EMI (electro magnetic interference) produced by the higher voltage, current and overall power of the components inside and nearby (printers speaker etc). If your wifi card has a detachable antenna you may benefit from one (with or without GAIN) on a cable so you can position it on the desk away from most of the nasty EMI.

Where can I buy one of these? Its exactly what I'm looking for to upgrade my laptop and it seems to be the only half size one in existence, but I cant find anywhere to buy it. There arent even any sketchy Hong Kong Ebay auctions for it. I understand that Atheros is probably only selling them to OEMs right now but I find it very hard to believe that none of them have made it to a venue that I can purchase from. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you'd like to sell me one, I'm open to that too.

Takenote that you can't just replace the card with the same model number without complying with the indicated fru number. Doing so, will result to a error message at startup. This restriction is popularly called as the whitelist. An alternative to the desired wireless communication between your TV and your unit is to have ChromeCast. You might want to explore this since this is easier compared to the replacement of the wifi card.

I have just installed Vista SP1 on my Sony Vaio, but now cannot connect to the internet, either wirelessly or wired. I need an update to the driver but have been unable to find one anywhere.

The update came available in August 2008 apparently, its for;

I've been looking round the net to try and find it myself as cannot use Windows Update without a connection.

When trying to search for Wireless networks I get an error message saying "Wireless commuication not enabled. Please enable wireless communication". Where do I do this?

Answer:Atheros Wireless Card Problem

Ok, well, as you have given us very little to work with, I will take a guess.

I'm assuming this is a laptop, and the 'Atheros' is an onboard wireless chipset...in which case, there is probably a switch on the side of the lappy to turn on wireless, or you need to enable it in software.

I am trying to create an ad-hoc network. Supposedly the driver installs but I can't create an ad-hoc network with Manage wireless>add nor see an option in adapter properties.

I have access to a Vista server if I should install that on it..since trying to create one for the work.

Any help?

Answer:Atheros 5700UG Wireless Adapter

There's a better solution than ad hoc. You can use your wifi to receive your internet and share it at the same time. You can also use your lan connection to share over wireless like a normal ad-hoc network. This solution also comes with WPA2 encryption and shows up as a hotspot, not ad-hoc.

Hiya,
I'm attempting to use the adapter and the wireless LAN on my laptop in order to create another access point so that I can connect my Nintendo DS up to wi-fi, which isn't currently possible under WPA security, it needs to be WEP or open, which my parents wont allow me to change it to.
I install the drivers that come up for Vista when I put the cd in the drive, but the icon does not appear in the desktop tray, no matter how many times that I try uninstalling/re-installing. This means that I can't configure it.
If anyone can help me to get it working, then it would be much appreciated.

It is actually already (Should be) installed. It is a service that you have to turn on. It is called "Wireless Zero Configuration."This link should suffice with directions on setting it up:http://www.home-network-help.com/wireless-zero-configuration.htmlThis other link may be helpful:http://tech.ifelix.net/2007.htmlAfter you turn the server on, look at the tray (near the clock at the bottom right), and you should see a little connection sign. Make sure you check the security of the network, you may have to change the security type to get in.Post if you need more help.

I am having a problem with my Wireless Internet Adapter.

It is an Atheros AR5B91 Adapter. I will connect to my router sucessfully, and if I am NOT downloading anything, or just browsing the web, It will go to "Limited Connectivity" after about 3 or 4 hours. And I am not able to go on the internet at that time until I turn off then turn on the Wireless switch.

It will automatically reconnect to my network and be good for another few hours. If I am downloading something (As of right now, Im downloading Office 2010 trial from Microsoft) It will download then go to limited connectivity in about 45 minutes - 1 hour.

I am running Windows 7 32-bit. The driver is up to date.

I would usually be able to solve this issue on my own, as i am not stupid when it comes to computers, but this one stumps me.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Hi Folks I was given a new laptop for Christmas which originally had Home Premium installed but was then reformatted with Windows 7 Pro x32. Everything is working fine apart from the Wireless. It is an Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter and no matter what I do I cannot get it working. Hello, I have an Atheros AR9258 Network Adapter on a Lenovo Z560 laptop.

I recently noticed that my internet speed was very slow, so I went to Speedtest.net. I found out that I am only getting 1/4 of the speed I pay for. I uninstalled the device and its drivers. I then re-installed them (using a wired connection). My speed went up to about half of what I pay for.

I thought the problem had been solved, but after about 5 minutes my speed was down to 1/4 of what I should get again. I have repeated the Speedtest, uninstall, reinstall, and Speedtest again procedure multiple times to the same conclusion. On my desktop I am getting the correct speed all of the time, so I know it is not my ISP.

Is my Wireless adapter going bad? How can I fix this problem?

Thanks

William

Answer:Atheros Wireless Adapter Slowing Down

I had two network drivers (Realtek and Atheros). I updated the Realtek and that seemed to fix it. I am now getting 100% of what I should get.

I just installed windows 7, was a completely fresh installation. I wiped the harddrive, installed the OS and for the most part it went well. I did run into one issue. All drivers installed correctly except the one for my wireless card. In device manager it shows up as properly installed (no yellow triangles). I've already tried a manual install of the driver downloaded directly from toshiba. I've tried windows xp and vista drivers for the same card to see if they would work, but to no avail.

*note: my ethernet connection does work. I've tried the windows troubleshooter for my wireless card, but it didn't really help. I've also uninstalled the driver for the wireless card and restarted multiple times to let windows re-install it, but my wireless internet still doesn't work. It displays "no connections available" but my card is enabled with full bars, and appears to be functioning properly. Any ideas?

Answer:Atheros Wireless Card Not Working!

Other than the fact that my processor is AMD, I have the same system and the Atheros 5700EG. I can connect, but I cannot automatically reconnect. Each time I turn on the machine or I logon, I must reconnect manually. What a pain. What is your driver version?

I suspect that there may be a driver problem and that it is worse in your case. Rarely, but it does happen, my first attempt at connection fails as you described, but repeated retries seems to be successful. I noticed that instead of left clicking and trying to connect, right clicking and going to the full network center for connection works almost flawlessly.

Problem is that I'm on Windows 7 but it keeps automatically installing drivers from 2008 that are for Vista. I think this is one of the reasons I'm getting BSOD problems..

EDIT: And now it's saying they weren't installed correctly. I'm beyond confused...

Have you looked on the manufacturers web site for drivers? Did the wireless adapter come with an driver/software install CD?

I have visited the official site and downloaded an update for my Atheros AR5005G but at the end it took me to a screen showing list of three files with the update showing in a box at the top. There were no prompts or instructions so I just closed the screen. How do I check if the update has actualy taken effect and if not what do I do.
Also when doing the update do I click Run or Save?

Regards Alex.

Answer:Atheros wireless network adapter

Hi

What version number was the updated download from Atheros? should be listed on the download page for the driver, with this version code open up Device Manager and then click Network Adapters and double click the Athros listed one and then click the Drivers tab and the version code of the driver installed is listed, just check its same as the one you installed.

Best is to download the driver by using Save, then open up the downloaded folder (if its a zip file then right click and Extract All) and double click the setup file if found, if no setup file then do let us know what files are listed, let us know what the download location of the driver was, your PC make and model and what Windows version you are using.

I am searching to solve my problem for few days but nothing is helping me.
I have Aces aspire 5520 but I've instaled Windows XP on ih, and Atheros wireless adapter, AR5007EG - intermediate driver.
Few weeks ago, it just stopped showing and working, I tried to update driver, install new drivers etc. but nothing really helped at time, few days later it started working from itself, in time when laptop was on standby.
Few days ago it stopped working again and now I am trying all these solutions but there is no progress.
Also has transmition module atheros AR5bxb63.
When I try to install some drivers the infomation computer gives me is that adapter is unpluged or ejected and then finishes the instalation progress.
And here is screenshoot from device manager.

I have a Lenovo Flex 2-15 running Win10 (64). My network connection keeps dropping, and I have to reboot (sometimes 2 or 3 times to get the WiFi connection to be good again. I have tried disabling/enabling and attempted to reinstall the driver, but I get the message that the driver is the latest.  I would like to remove the wireless driver and reboot and have windows detect the hardware, but I don't want to do that unless I have the driver already on my hard drive. When I search drivers in the support section, there are none for Qualcomm/Atheros. How can I obtain the drivers for the wireless adapter on my laptop? A text file with the information is attached. Thanks in advance for any help. Ken

Hello everyone or anyone. I have Vista Home Premium, Nvidia GForce 8500GT, HP Pavilion m7760n, intel dual core 6400, 4 gigs ram. The original video card is an intel chipset 945.
I have recently received an update through windows automatic update

Atheros Communications Inc. - Network - HP 802.11b/g Wireless Network Adapter

driverid=20153294

but, everytime I install it, the computer freezes. If I reboot by a hard boot, it will not get past the login screen without freezing. The only way to even log on is to boot to safe mode without networking. I have researched the problem, but have come up empty handed.
If anyone has a solution please let me know. Thank You

Answer:Atheros Wireless Network Adapter Update

You do NOT want to accept hardware drivers updates through Windows Update! Download them directly from the hardware manufacturer or the machine manufacturer.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=2093&lc=en&cc=us&lang=en&dlc=en&product=3339302

I don't see a wireless driver update listed, so I'd stick with the HP supplied one here.

The wireless connection will just cut out. Indications are that the wireless adapter is still connected to the router - SSID and password mathc - but no internet connection. I've updated to the latest driver from HP support and reapply multiple times. It works for a bit and then next restart or just out of the blue it disconnects. What do I need to do for consistent connectivity?  This is my wife's laptop and she has a home business. Makes it a little hard for her to do her work when she can't stay connected.  Any help is appreciated.

Hi All, I have a G575 and wireless will not work. The error on the driver screen is: "Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers..." I have been to the lenovo website and grabbed the latest drivers for windows 7 home premium. This gave me file IN3WLN11WW5.exe which does not appear to support atheros (it lists broadcom and two others). However I installed it and as expected it didnt work. So now I'm completely stuck I have tried reinstalling the original - that solved the problem one month ago, but this time it will not work even when I remove, reboot, reinstall, reboot, try etc. I have tried many times now. I have searched this forum and found other threads with the same problem but none of them have helped me. thanks

Answer:Lenovo G575 Atheros Wireless LAN not working

Please do a system restore to the point when the drivers were working good. This would solve the problem. Also if the problem still persist, then please boot into Driver Signature Enforcement mode and see if the drivers are working then.To go into Driver Signature Enforcement mode, press F8 when the small blinking underscore(_) occurs just before starting windows screen comes.

Hi. Recently I was watching a movie on my laptop, but I hadnt noticed that my battery was low, ao it turned off. I put the charger on and then I noticed that I cannot find any wireless networks (and normally, there are at least 10 networks in my range). I searched in the forums for help and I noticed that many peaple have problems with these adapters, but I couldnt handle on my own. So if you guys would be kind enough to explain a newbie what exactly to do, I would be very grateful.

Answer:i cannot find any wireless networks (atheros ar9285)

Uninstall and reinstall the wifi driver :
Left click the Start button
Click Control Panel
Click System control panel
Click the Hardware tab
Click the button labeled Device Manager
Select the device you wish to uninstall in the Device Manager window
From the toolbar, click the uninstall button (looks like a computer with a red X over it)
You can also uninstall by right clicking on the device and selecting Uninstall from the context menu. A dialog box will open asking you if you really wish to uninstall the driver. Click YES, then OK in the next window, then OK in the System Properties Window.

Now reinstall the driver from CD.

Can anyone give me some advice on what the problem with my wireless might be?

I have an Atheros AR5B95 wireless network adapter installed on my laptop (an Acer Aspire 5733 running Windows 7). The device manager indicates that the network adapter is working fine. However, for the past few months, my wireless reception has consistently been slow and intermittent, even when very near the router. No one else in my household is having this problem with their laptops, and I am having the same problem elsewhere with other routers and signals. So, I am pretty certain the problem lies with my laptop.

The problem started a few months ago, when a technician came to have a look at the power jack in my laptop. It may just be a coincidence, but immediately afterwards, the problem with the wireless capability of my laptop began. So, to make it clear: before the seemingly unrelated work, wireless was fine. Immediately after the work, wireless was terrible.
I can?t understand how what the technician did could have affected the network adapter. It may just be a coincidence however.

Can anyone give me some suggestion on what I could do? Could it be something that the technician did affected the network adapter?

Answer:Have I got a problem with my Atheros wireless network adapter?

One possibility is damage to the antenna wire. The adapter may be working fine, but without a good antenna the reception would be crappy.

Ok first off I have tried just about everything I can think of to fix this problem. This post is a last ditch effort to fix the problem. The laptop is an HP. The network adapter is having the common problem of being unable to connect to secured wireless networks. I know this is a common problem and I HAVE tried everysingle suggestion posted on this forum, including but not limited to: reinstalling drivers, making sure the adapter is configured for the appropriate gateway and even doing a full restore to factory defaults. NOTHING has worked. Any help with this situation would be greatly appreciated. Also I have tried many things that I cannot remember butif you suggest them I will know if I have already tried them. Feel free to make suggestions. Obviously this is beyond my capabilities and am open to ANY suggestion. Thanks in advance.

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results into notepad and then automatically open the notepad and display on your screen.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results into a reply here
to do that:

I have a problem with a Qualcomm Atheros AR5B93 wireless card in a Packerd Bell Easynote LM81 running Win7 Home pro so decided to replace it and by (my) mistake bought an Atheros AR5B95 instead.
Does anyone know if this is reverse compatible as when installing it gets detected as new hardware but I then getr an error message saying it didn't install correctly and a network cable is broken or disconnected. I have tried downloading drivers but result is the same. When I reinstall the original card it connects to the web ok, other than starting malfunctioning later as per original problem.
Thanks for your help.

I have an HP dv5-1002nr notebook PC from 2008 (piece of junk if you ask me, but that's another issue).

Way back when I first bought this computer, the wireless adapter driver would get corrupted every time the computer would overheat. At the time, I was shown how I could reinstall the Atheros wireless adapter driver from my Recovery Manager.

I have since solved all the overheating issues, but this morning, the Atheros driver disappeared (or was corrupted) again, and I have tried reinstalling it several times, both from the Recovery Manager and from the HP driver web site.

The files will load, and the installation wizard goes through, but then even after I reboot, the driver still doesn't show up in my network device manager settings, and the network wireless adapter still won't turn on.

HELP!!!!!

Hello and welcome thefourwinds , starting to sound like maybe a hardware issue here, are you still able to connect with it wired ? I am thinking hard ware issue based on the fact that you say the driver will not load up . However, have you tried uninstalling that driver and then reloading fresh one ?

Answer:Atheros AR5007EG wireless network adapter for XP

Incase anyone else is having this problem or in the dire situation that amyky hasn't solved it yet:

I managed to get the drivers for this card for XP via PC Specialist at
http://www.driversbay.com/dl.php?dlid=1567

These worked fine for me but I did have to change control over to Windows first. Follow the instructions on installing first. I completely removed everything and then rebooted and then installed the new drivers. Right click on the icon at the bottom right of your status bar and select 'View Available Networks'. Here you need to follow the instructions to allow windows to manage the card and hey presto!

Of course you do need to ensure that Wireless Lan is enabled.
To do this press the Fn and F2 keys together. If you are using Bluetooth you will need the selection for Bluetooth AND Wireless Lan to be enabled.

Hope this helps a few people.

Hey guys.

I am having a problem with a friends computer, I have had some experience fixing problems in the past with computers but i can not figure this one out. This computer has a Atheros AR5b91 wireless card in it, it will connect to the internet when I have a Ethernet cable plugged in but not wireless. It is showing I am connected and have an excellent signal but will not connect to the internet. If you can help it will be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Can not connect to the internet using Atheros Wireless card

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (including Radar, Connection and Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with that see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

Also show ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

To all having problems with the Atheros AR5007EG wireless network adapter, Mine is an Acer Aspire 5315 laptop with Windows Vista 32bit.

Skip to the end - go to PC Pitstop.

If you're interested, see my journey:

I've just had 10 hours of trying to sort mine out so I thought I might post to save anyone else in the same predicament the trouble I've had.

My problem was that I was showing as being connected to the network but not to the internet. A LONG phone call to virgin came up with this old network adapter not supporting some of the newer modems so it needed an updated driver which they could not get for me.

The Atheros website was useless still (Jan 2013) as was the Acer website. Microsoft update wouldn't recognise that I needed a newer driver so that didn't help either. I tried some trusted downloading sites such as CNET etc but they only lead to out of date drivers that didn't help.

I saw some earlier posts on this techguy forum semi-connected to this but unfortunately they lead no-where. And all the "free" download managers lead nowhere too.

I didn't want to pay any money so I perservered. I didn't really want to try any download sites that I was unfamiliar with but I was getting desperate. Eventually I managed to download an up to date driver through PC Pitstop. I entered the information about my computer, driver, OS etc and they asked me to enter my email address so that they could send the link. I thought here... Read more

Have a MSI A6200 laptop here, and it came with Windows 7 home premium x32. I formatted it with a clean .iso of Windows 7 home premium x64 (which I've done before successfully on a similar MSI laptop) and now my wireless speeds are terrible. I connect at 11mbps but web browsing is incredibly slow and I download at a whopping rate of 20 kb/s max. I've tried using the native driver that Windows 7 installs, the one available through Windows Update, and also one I found on the net: neither makes a difference.

Before I formatted it was working just fine. I'm currently downloading a x32 bit copy, thinking it's a driver issue, but is there any other troubleshooting steps I can take? It doesn't seem to be a network problem as all the other laptops in the house are unaffected.

edit: I can't even find my laptop on MSI's website

Hello Everyone!

I am sorta using this site as a last resort. I know that people have many questions on here and I feel greedy asking for help. I am pretty decent with wireless networking and I guess this is why I am so frustrated right now. I am the administrator of a school network that has just recently implemented some Cisco 1130AG access points. Everything was set up by the person that was running the network before me. He set 128-bit WEP on the network. Everything was working very smoothly until I tried getting a bundle of Toshiba Tecra A2's (specs here: http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/...BV_EngineID=ccccaddljfdijemcgfkceghdgngdgmm.0) to connect to the network. Usually, the Tecras will boot up with the wireless saying "Not Connected" even though I can get internet. This is my first post. I have an ASUS notebook running Windows 10 64 bit OS. I have a Linksys router transmitting on both 2.4 and 5 GHz. I can receive the 5 GHz signal on my iPhone but not on my notebook. Installed latest driver and when I go to the adapters' properties it only shows 802.1b Preamble with no way to select a or g. It is my understanding that b only receives 2.4 GHz. Looking for suggestions on how to receive 5 GHz or whether it is possible with this adapter. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum. Your card supports up to wireless n, but only on a 2.4 GHz band. You won't be able to connect to a 5 GHz band unless you change wireless adapters.

How far are you from the source of the wifi signal?

Let's check. Download the zip file, extract the EXE file to Desktop. RIGHT-click on the EXE file icon, select "Run as Administrator"

At the small school where i'm the computer-guy, one manager left, taking with him some wireless device which he never showed or explained to me. Now, some computers can still access wireless fine thru the D-Link access point, but both mine, and my friend's computers (both Acer notebooks) cannot even detect the signal, even tho the wireless on the notebooks works fine when going to the mall and using their free wi-fi (for example).

Should i just update the drivers? This seems like a strange problem to me, why it should detect some wireless networks, and not others.

My Atheros AR5B91 wireless network adaptor has started turning itself off randomly, and then I am unable to turn it back on using the dedicated button on my laptop. The only way to start it again is to restart the laptop. I have tried updating the drivers but it hasnt had any effect.

Acer aspire 5536
windows 7 64bit
AMD athlon dual core QL64 2.1 ghz
4gb ram

the wireless connection would dissappear and when i troubleshoot the problem I am given an error message saying

"The atheros AR5B91 wireless network adapter is experiencing driver or hardware related problems."
Any ideas? The laptop is over 2 years old so I thought it may just be knackered....especially seeing as the wirless network button doesnt seem to do anything.

Thanks in advance

Ok, guys I need some help. My laptop is an Acer Aspire 1830T the other day I installed some Windows 7 updates and when my computer restarted I didn't have Wifi, and an Ethernet connection was not even working. So I went through a bunch of things:

I started by uninstalling the Windows updates that installed, trying to re-install drivers. The Ethernet started working right away when I installed the corresponding driver, however I could never get the WiFi working after trying multiple drivers from the system disk which had Wifi in the title. I then went ahead an uninstalled everything installed that day to start fresh in case there were conflicts and had the computer search the disk for the driver. I now get the following error message and have no idea what do to from here. (Note the computer had me send some error message to MS which it said it doesn't have an answer for, but there might be one in the future.... and I went ahead and installed the latest updates, since it seems maybe that wasn't the problem afterall since uninstalling didn't fix the problem?) I considerate myself computer friendly but no expert, please advise. Thanks

Updated 8/15/09 - The latest drivers published by Lenovo for the wireless a/b/g card work fine now.  No need to use the driver mentioned below.  This will be my last update. Update 2/21/09 - Finally Fixed after almost two years of BSODs happening regularly on my wireless connection!  I found a more recent Atheros driver on the www.atheros.cz site.  Version 7.6.0.154 (June 30, 08).  It worked, and after heavy use for several days I've not had a single BSOD.  No more being tied to an ethernet cable.  Update 11/12 - Bought a USB Wireless adapter (I'm not using the integrated wireless card any more).  Still gettting Blue Screens occasionally (every couple days)  Windows Problems/Solutions utility says it is a recognized problem and recommneds turning off Windows Auto Tuning.  Haven't tried that yet.  Will report back.  Never got an resolution on this.  Using the USB adapter makes life tolerable, but still frustrating. Update 9/23 - The latest Lenovo Driver (available Sept 08) did not help. If I turn the power off on my Atheros card, it will run forever w/o BSOD.  Turn the Atheros wireless on (switch on the front of the T60) and it blue screens a couple times a day (if not more often).  The latest Lenovo driver seems to have the problem no matter the signal strength now.  After a year of this, I'm ready to try a different wireless adapter. Original Msg - My system BSODs when u... Adapter Randomly Shuts Down, sometimes putting my computer on sleep mode fixes this. However sometimes my computer goes into 'half' sleep mode where everything shuts down except the computer keeps running, in this case I have to reset my computer.

I have tried every driver on the internet, the old to the new does nothing different. Everyone else in my house hold does not have any of these issues mentioned.

The solution is :  Goto settings -> system -> power and sleep -> additional power settings -> change plan settings (of selected plan) ORGoto Search -> type Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound -> Power Options -> -> change plan settings (of selected plan) Thenchange advance power settings -> wireless adapter settings -> power saving mode -> Set On battery to maximum performance Check your speed now(restart if required) I am now using the updated driver 12.0.0.191 and internet speed is proper.

I am thiunking about upgrading the wi-fi/bluetooth card in my laptop to one with more capabilities. wifi band coverage etc. I have read that the MAC adresss on the Wi-fi cards is important and that replacing the card will cause the bios not to recognoze it, stopping the machine from working. ( Alledgedly, only certain ranges of mac adresses are whitelisted by the bios ?) 1) Is this correct ?2) If so can anyone recommend cards that would be compatible,  or any ways to get around this issue ?  Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Answer:Upgrade y50 Networking: Wireless(Atheros, Realtek, Broadcom).

Hi ajwales ,

Welcome to the Community Forums .

What Y50 do you have ? Can you post the machine number from the sticker label ?

1. Filtered MAC address or changes therewith from the router would not release from whitelist that easily. The compatiblity device list are coded on the Firmware (BIOS). In some occasion , WLAN connection is not working due to filtered MAC but whitelisted device is different.

2. You can check on OEM recommended FRU list of WLAN cards from the hardware manual under documentation tab from the support site ( just type your model from the search box).

Some searches may direct you on bios modification for the WLAN whitelist for your model as a solution, but be careful as changing / modifying BIOS can brick your machine.

Hope this answered your query , update us how it goes.

I just bought this laptop two days ago and I'm unable to download anything from the Internet faster than 0-2 Mbps when I'm perfectly able to download at speeds of around 40 Mbps on my Lenovo B570 using the same 2.4 ghz band on my router. When it's hard-wired to the router, however, I get about 90 Mbps down which is fine. I've installed the "latest" driver from Lenovo's support page, which appears to be exactly the same driver that it was preloaded with although it gives a new version number in the description and is as recent as this month to no avail. I've also installed the latest BIOS and that didn't help either. I reset my router settings to factory defaults for the hell of it and that didn't help the situation either. I'm not sure what else to do at this point except return the laptop for a refund. Any ideas?

I recently bought a new laptop (Lenovo Z50). On first few weeks the wireless connection works perfectly fine. Then out of sudden, it totally not able to connect to the network (The network also not visible) which I used to connected to it previously. On the other hand, my smartphone was able to connect to the network.  However,  I tried and able to connect network tethering from my smartphone and at the same time my other laptop able to connect to the network which failed to connect from Z50. I have tried to reinstall the wifi driver from Lenovo support site, or from Atheros site but none of those helps. I've even restore my laptop using one-key recovery still it does not solve the problem. When the wireless starts to fail, everytime i shutdown and turn back on the laptop the wifi connection always show no network found until I disable and reenable the wireless driver. At this time, if I quickly click on the wifi icon on the taskbar, I still able to see the wifi tried to connect the network (it shows connecting text) before the network went missing from the list.  Another funny thing was occasionally the wireless does not show any problem to connect to the same network. The occurance of this issues seems to be happen on random manner.  So as for today, I still able to connect to the network and also facing the issue on someday. Is there any proven solution to this problem?

Hello, I have a problem with my internet (still). I tried asking you here for help earlier but I didn't get any help so I'm trying again.

I bought a new Laptop with Windows 7, it's an Acer Aspire 7741G, but ever since I started it up the internet has not been working correctly. I only get 1-2 signalbars out of 5-6, no matter how close to the router I am, and those 2 bars is only enough to get my internet on this computer up in like 50kb/s when downloading.

Where I live we have several computers, macs, PS3s, and they have never had any problems connecting to our internet, apart from this one.

I've tried most things on my computer to get it to work, but nothing has done the trick yet.

When I troubleshoot the connection it says "problem with the adapter or access point - fixed" almost everytime, and after doing the troubleshoot the internet goes to max speed (5-6 bars) for about 10 seconds before dropping down low again.

I have tried to uninstalled my antivirus/firewall, I have changed the powersettings, I have tried mostly everything that I have found on forums all around, but nothing has worked yet.

Would appreciate some help

I have been searching for a while to fix the issue for my Toshiba laptop that has a 5006x wifi built in. I downgraded to XP for the performance gains from Vista and have been using a 5.x driver flawlessly until I installed sp3. OMG I couldn't stay connected to the internet for more than 5 minutes on my wireless router. My wife's wireless card (airlink101) didn't burp with sp3. It actually seemed to connect better. Well, I installed and uninstalled so many drivers and figured I'd have to uninstall sp3 instead. Then I came across this 1. It WORKS! Just go to device manager and update the driver to this 1. Hi folks. At about 4:30 AM this morning, the wireless network adapter (Atheros AR5007EG) in my laptop (a Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5932) stopped working and I've no idea why. It pops up in the system tray and says that it isn't detecting any wireless networks, however several other devices I have in my apartment (a Wii, for example) are able to detect half a dozen such networks, including the one broadcasting from the router I normally use (which is about five feet away from the laptop at present.)

The laptop's wireless power switch is on and the LED is lit. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Atheros's drivers from Windows's device manager, to no avail. I've done a system update, nothing. I've run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and it didn't encounter anything. I'm running Spybot S&D right now.

Answer:Atheros AR9285 wireless disabled by default at startup

SOLUTION! (at least for me on my laptop)

I just had this problem when I reinstalled the OS from the OEM disc (not the factory install disc) I figured the OEM disc had a driver conflict. But I incorrectly pointed the finger at the wirless lan driver.

The HOT KEY strip (the one with the buttons that turn white when you touch them just above the keyboard) on my laptop also controls the Wi-Fi Radio on/off button. This was the problem. You need the origional driver for that strip, even if your volume on the strip is working.

Background. Think of your wireless lan as two seperate devices... the radio is compared to the cord of an ethernet connection. The wireless lan card is the ethernet card. When you think about it as one device it is easy to see why so many people assume the problem is with the wireless lan card. But the important part is that a laptop usually devides the two up to save power. Controlling the radio from a button on the keyboard (or a function key) (mine is FN +F2) is another reason to think of the two as seperate items.

Before reaching this conclusion I tried using "allow the computer to turn this device off to save power" I also had tried Hi performance modes and other wireless radio from the control pannel in both plug-in and battery modes. I tried the turn wireless netork on and off as well. There were plenty of reasons to think this was going to fix the problem.

So update your HOTkey strip driver... see if that doesnt... Read more

I just reformatted my 2 yr old Toshiba Satellite laptop with XP. It originally had Vista but I've been running XP on it for the last year. When I first loaded up XP a year ago, it took days of searching on the internet to find the driver but I eventually found it for free.

I spent hours yesterday looking for the driver and most links end up in an endless loop, to a pay site or to the useless Atheros website itself that offers no driver download support.

So many of the links that claim to offer the driver for this Atheros AR5001X don't really have the driver. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd really like to get my wireless card up and running again. Thank you.
