Update firmware on Linksys router WRT54G version 2

Question: Update firmware on Linksys router WRT54G version 2

I just recently updated my firmware on my linksys router WRT54G with the new version of linksys firm ware and now my router does not work. I can not access the GUI under the ip address I 've tried to reboot the router using the 30/30 method that is suggested by Linksys, but I still can not access the routers GUI. Please advise if there is another method to set back the routers firmware.

Preferred Solution: Update firmware on Linksys router WRT54G version 2

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Update firmware on Linksys router WRT54G version 2

I don't believe that the router saves any copy of the old firmware to set back to.

I'd recommend the DD-WRT firmware.

Was it the wrong firmware? Was it for your chipset version? Was the firmware for G, or GS, or other?

I have an old Linksys WRT-54G that I thought might be getting a bit long in the tooth. There was a recent sale on the new D-Link DIR-657 which is a full featured current gen model, that supports wireless N, support QOS automatically for game and video packets, and supports USB print server and file sharing function. I decided to upgrade for the cheap price of $20 on at the recent onesaleaday listing.

I expected to get a bit of an improvement in connection speed - after all that old Linksys router is about a decade old. I've not really spent time on wireless yet to compare at all, but for wired there is no change to speak of. I was surprised, because I figured that old v2 WRT-54G 200mhz processor might have been holding me back. It apparently was not.

I ran eight simple speed tests with each router pretty immediately after swapping them out. I ran four cities twice on the tests. ( Here are the results.

WRT54G - 13.54 and 16.58 down and 1.04 and 1.08 up
DIR-657 - 11.71 and 17.60 down and 1.07 and 1.08 up

WRT54G - 8.51 and 8.72 down and 1.07 and 1.07 up
DIR-657 - 5.98 and 8.75 down and 1.07 and 1.07 up

WRT54G - 6.46 and 5.05 down and 1.01 and 1.06 up
DIR-657 - 5.03 and 6.40 down and 1.06 and 1.06 up

WRT54G - 15.30 and 16.77 down and 1.07 and 1.06 up
DIR-657 - 20.20 and 15.73 down and 1.07 and 1.05 up

Hi guys i just purchased a wrt54g router version 7.

I setup my connection in this way

cable ---> cable modem ----> wrt54g internet port ---> port 1 of wrt54g ---> my computer's networking card

I am able to connect to the internet, but when i run the setup cd it keeps prompting me for a password on step 8 after determining the settings.

No matter what password i put it stills go back to the same screen, i have tried the default password admin and have also left the field blank. Nothing seems to work.

I have tried to reset the modem. I did research on other forum and have tried ipconfig /all ipconfig /renew ipconfig /release and nothing seems to work

I also read the pdf file attached to the cd, i can't seem to go into either on mozilla or IE.

Please help me guys. This thing is really frustrating and my family members cant have access to the internet due to this. Thanks. I am quite new to the computer a step by step approach would be most appropriate thanks

So a litle more then a year ago, I set up my first wireless network using the WRT54G. It was still only version 1.0. I have the router set up in the basement, I tried using my laptop on the back porch, and I had a very horrible connection. I then started to look around for a different solution. This was before the high gain antanaes for the router. And then I can't remember how, but I found this firmware program called Satari. It gives you tons of more feutures then the standard firmware put out by linksys. One of which allows you to boost your siginal strenght by raising your xmit power (basicly overclocking the router).

But anyway, just recently my router has been disconnecting from my cable internet modem. And I find myself hard restetting it at least once a day in order to gain internet access. I can still access my router and ping other computers on the network, but neither wired nor wireless can access the internet until I reset the router. Does anybody have any idea what is going on? I've alread tried cloning my mac address, disenabling WEP, and several other things. Or could this just be a dreaded failure from esentially overclocking my router, but if this was true, I don't know why the wire switch would be effected......

I bought a used Linksys WRT54G v8.2 router and I would like to replace the stock firmware with DD-WRT, because Linksys -- I should say Belkin now -- hasn't brought out any firmware updates for this model in a very long time.

The problem is that the idiots at DD-WRT's official site are being very unhelpful & not cooperative.

I just want to know what version I need to get from the FTP site that is in one of the articles, and they keep stating read all 4 which I've done multiple times and still have no idea.

They wonder why they are getting a bad rap, is because they are annoying new users who want to use their software.

I may just start saving up and get the RouterBoard wired/wireless router down the road.

The other day I bought the WRT54G to use in my apartment, sharing the connection amongst four of us. I'm the only one who doesn't use my cell as my primary phone; instead, I use Vonage. I bought the WRT54G to be able to use QoS features, since my roomies aren't always good about keeping the cable line de-saturated with their downloads.

I know about the Sveasoft firmware, but after doing some reading I'm hearing some bad things about their business practices (GPL and whatnot). I don't mind paying $20 to get the good stuff, but I don't want to pay it if I can otherwise legally aquire the same thing.

I do not want to get into even somewhat gray areas here, since I'd rather get good quality advice. Please don't tell me to look on P2P sites or the like. (That's what PMs are for. ) But seriously, what are my options to enable QoS, and make use of some other cool options on my new router?

Oh yes, almost forgot: Some instructions on what I need to do would also be helpful. I've done firmware upgrades, of course, but if there's some esoteric method for doing things, please let me know that, too.

Well, not sure what to tell you about the web interface. But for telnet the username should be root and the password should be set to whatever you set the administrator password to.

Ok, you guys can make fun of me if you want, but I was in a hurry and thought that I might be able to get away with this.

I was trying to help my brother upgrade the firmware on his router and thought that it would be faster to just do it myself remotely, rather than trying to explain the process to him.

It all seemed to be working fine, until a little over halfway through the upgrade, I got a "firmware upgrade failure" message and now the router is completely unresponsive.

I'm guessing the problem came from the bin file being locally on my computer while I was upgrading the router remotely.

Anyway, is there any way to fix this? We can't even ping the router now.

I had him unplug it and reset it and its still not responding.

Maybe Walmart will take it back.

Answer:Linksys WRT54G firmware upgrade failure.

There's a very good website on the net complete with pictures that tells you how to revive a dead WRT54G. I unfortunately never bookmarked it, but it involved the following:

1. Unplugging the unit.
2. Taking it completely apart (it's easy - screwless design)
3. Locate pins 15-16 on the router's chipset (usually labeled Broadcom).
4. Short the pins. While shorting them, plug the power in.
5. You'll see lights flash.
6. You'll have a small window of opportunity to TFTP a working firmware to the router.

I could ellaborate some more, but I have to go to work. It really does work. I did it myself after a bad firmware upgrade.

But yeah, it's probably easier if you just got it replaced.

I have a WRT54G v5 and was wondering if there is any firmware that will speed up things. Transferring files between computers seems to be a tad slow. Also, anything that I could do to help decrease my ping? Or should I just get a new router?

I primarily do gaming online and web browsing and transfer things from computer to computer.

Answer:WRT54G, new firmware or new router?

The V5 is a very crippled router..hardware wise. Yes you can get a version of DD-WRT on it...quite a few steps involved compared to flashing a better model like a version 1-4 with DD-WRT, and not much performance gain...because as decent as DD-WRT can only do so much with so little horsepower.

Short story even shorter, there was a semi-power outage this morning (lights were very dim but power wasn't totally off), and when the power came back on my router stopped working. Here's what I know:

-The WLAN LED is no longer lit so there's no wireless. That orange CiscoSystems button is no longer glowing orange either if that means much.

-For some odd reason a wired connection through any of the ethernet ports on the router no longer works either, though the LED's still light up when connected, along with the internet LED.

-The modem works fine, I'm connected to the internet directly from the modem right now.

-I've tried to reset the router, but it doesn't seem to do anything.

-I've tried to access the router config settings, and the page doesn't load.

-I've tried to look up the routers ip address through the command prompt but when I enter the command "ipconfig" when I'm wired through the router I always get the response something along the lines of "media disconnected". When I try the command when connected directly to the modem the default gateway ip address comes up as ''. This doesn't work either.
I've been searching the web for solutions for hours and I can't find one. This is actually the first time I've ever had to post a thread asking for help and I've experienced a slew of computer problems over the years, lol.

Just switched over to AT&T DSL from Road Runner Cable Modem.

While I had the cable modem, I used a Linksys WRT54G wireless router that had my PC and laptops connected to it.

Since I switched to AT&T DSL, I have been using AT&T's all-in-one device, the Westell DSL modem/wireless router/firewall.

I've noticed that uPnP doesn't work as well on the Westell as it did on the Linksys. I also had to change some settings to get my VPN to connect to my company's network.

Which is better? Should I put the Westell in bridged mode, and reconnect my Linksys? Or keep it the way I have it running it though the all-in-one device?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Westell DSL modem/router/firewall VS. Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router

I'd put the Westell in bridged mode, which will then emulate your old configuration, which apparently worked properly.

I'm trying to hook the wrt54g wireless linksys router up to a westell 2200 dsl modem. I go to the setup dic and run it with out the router in line. It get the config. off my modem and it tells me to hook the router up set it upbut tells me that the router is not connected to the internet. It then tells me to shut the modem down then restart it. Thanks for any help you can give me

Answer:wrt54g linksys router

The Westell 2200 DSL modem/router combo defaults to LAN address My guess is that the Linksys also defaults to the 192.168.1.x subnet. You can check that by looking at an ipconfig connected to each router; also the manual on your CD will tell you the default. If that is the case, reset the Linksys to factory default settings and pick one of the following options.

1. Change the LAN subnet of one router to something else; say, 192.168.3.x. Change its Dhcp server address range accordingly if it doesn't change automatically. This is probably the easiest change to make, but is the inferior option.

2. Configure the Westell into bridge mode, making it act as a modem only.

3. Configure the Linksys as an ethernet switch and wireless access point.

JohnWill's procedure for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

Connecting two SOHO broadband routers together.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses through, I'd assign the secondary router as it's IP address.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router.

Hello there, Im looking for help for seting up a pair of wrt54g routers with my laptop. So this is the problem:

I have a Laptop with wifi that I setup to obtain an IP and DNS automatically in the properties of the connection.

I have a wrt54g in my home and another wrt54g at my office, their gateways for Internet are: home: and office: My problem is that everytime that I move from my home to my office or viceversa I have to set up the default gateways of my laptop MANUALLY to or, so I want to know what I have to do to change the default gateways on my laptop automatically without setting up manually.
Note.- I enabled DHCP in my routers, so the IPs are assigend automatically to the laptop.
Thanks in advance!!!

Answer:Please help me with a wrt54g Linksys router!!!

first let start with
both routers should be static at best set to as default gateway
disable dhcp all connected machines on this lan should have the numbers start after last digit 1
IE: to 255 you can leave dynamic if thats what your provider needs a with dhcp disabled the router and connected machines will not change address's
you don't say how many machine are on each router but should not matter
they to routers are not connected by a cat 5e cable but your trying to connect via wan internet
you need to set up a vpn config
routers have to be able to do this or try link 1
link 2
client software I have not used it
the ip number you need is the isp wan address should see this in status of router
this is the address to connect to other machine

Linksys WRT54G wireless G Version 6.0

I lose my internet connection after I wake up from sleep, restarting my computer does not help. The only way to get it back is to restart the router which is impossible because I'm not the only one who uses it. (It annoys everyone else)

I got my dell xps 1530 january 23, 3 weeks later I started having this said problem, I looked it up everywhere... no help... any after a couple of days of trying to figure it out, i finally did. I uninstalled 2 updates from microsoft, namely, update rollup for activeX killbits for windows x64 AND windows malicious software removal tool, after which everything was fine.

3 weeks later, after i installed a game called plant tycoon, the same thing happened so I again uninstalled it, telling myself to stop downloading stuff altogether. (yes, it worked properly again afterwards)

NOW, I'm having the same problem AGAIN eventhough i have not downloaded anything at all. and I'm positive of that since its exam week. I have done nothing but study.

Does anyone, anyone have a plausible explanation for this weird occurence. and a solution for it. I keep having this repetitive problem month after month. And for my first laptop, it's really traumatizing... (I'm regretting going for a pc...)

Just curious if anyone has experienced this issue with a Linksys router. A user at my company is having problems accessing our VPN when connected to his wireless router. He will get connected and then lose the connection. I had him ping the IP address of the VPN server and it actually loses 2 of the packets on one try and all on another. This is happening on his company issues laptop and a desktop PC in his home. After doing a traceroute from our network to his IP address assigned by his ISP, it times out after hitting hops on the ISP's network. I advised him to contact his cable company to see what the issue is. They had him disconnect the router an plug directly into the cable modem and it works fine. As a first step he is going to purchase a new router to try and see if that reparis the problem. If not the issue will again be in his cable line setup or something. Answer:Linksys WRT54G Router OR XP problem?

i did what you did with the setup and all, and to the best of my knowledge, the router you have is for internet sharing only. to network the pc's you would have to hardwire them, i.e., no wireless. to share pc's wirelessly you would have to get a wireless network router. this is what was told to me by several people. i eventualy took all my linksys stuff back, as i was told they were not a good company, and their tech support is based in asia and hard to understand, etc.
(nothing against asians, of course. my aunt is Taiwanese, and she rocks. lol)

Ok, using that router w/Linksys PCI wireless card in desktop in another room. Never can hold a wireless connection. Logs in then drops. I've even set the f&#^ing router on top of the goddamned PC & it cannot hold a wireless connection. Not sure what the problem is here. Have the latest firmware/driver/XP updates. My desktop is physically jacked & my GFs desktop is wireless. I'm running 64-bit encryption w/all the baseline settings. Like I said, it logs in just fine. Then when I walk back to it or try to get files off it thru the network. Nothing .... please need something or I'm tossing the P.O.S. out the f&$^ing window. Wireless eats a dick anyways ...

I recently picked up a Linksys WRT54G broadband router for our home network. Before opening the package, I went to Linksys' web site to find the latest firmware for the router. On their site Linksys lists the WRT54G in three separate sections: v1, v1.1 and v2. Looking at the box it appears that I have purchased v1.1.

Since I have not opened the box and can return it for exchange, I was wondering if anyone knew what the difference was between WRT54G v1.1 and WRT54G v2? It does not appear that Linksys has an "upgrade" option for v1.1 (unless I am missing it). And yes, before anyone asks, I have emailed Linksys about this, but I have not received a response back (despite their 24 hour claim).

Answer:Linksys WRT54G router versions

Unless theres something really wrong with the firmware thats in there, I don't see much of a reason to upgrade, simply because if you dick something up you may have a dead router.

Hey helpful people,

I have an old WRT54G router from probably at least 5 years ago, and lately it has been giving me a lot of trouble. My wireless connection will suddenly terminate for no reason, and my laptop will not be able to find any connections, making me have to reset the router, sometimes at least once a day. I power cycle this thing constantly, and updated it to the latest firmware a while ago. Is it just time to get a new one? I'm a college student and really can't afford the nice N router I want, which would be upwards of 100 dollars. Any advice?

This is my router's image:

Again, it has the latest firmware, which is at least 2 years old. I updated it about 3 months ago when I was having the same kind of trouble.

Answer:Linksys WRT54G Router Problem

often updating the firmware on an old router will extend the life slightly - but router do wear out and 5 years i would say its time for a change

the only advantage on a "N" would be the speed and extended coverage in theory, my N router actually did not extend the coverage
Also the speed will only be of benefit when coping across the network - your ISP download speed would probably be the factor to determine the speed
what are you paying the ISP for downlad speed ?

I consider myself to be pretty computer savvy and able to troubleshoot, but this wireless router has kicked my butt. I've learned from this website that I should not even bother with my setup CD. Here's my problem: I went through the set up and it stalls at step 7, entering my password. I bought the router used but I have reset it. when I type in my password the setup just sits there at step 7 and does nothing. So I went to the ip address that is mentioned for setup but I know nothing about it. I have no clue what to put for my host name (is that my yahoo/sbc dsl ID?) and how to make sure that my wireless network can only be accessible by password. I know when I tries to log onto the neighbors networks that they were secured and I had to guess their passwords. Also, my roommate wants to connect to my wireless connection. I'm ok with this but I do want him to have to type in a password before being able to access it. I just can't figure out where I can change the default password.Any advice? I'm just learning what SSID means, I still have no clue what it actually does.

Answer:I'm inept. linksys router wrt54g

First of all, the Linksys WRT54G is suitable for use with Cable Broadband (NTL or Telewest) is that what you are connecting to? It doesn't have an ADSL modem incorporated which you need for ADSL services via the phoneline.Although CDs with a Setup Wizard are often provided, a router doesn't install as hardware or software in a PC and it is probably as easy to set it up via its web-based interface accessed by typing its IP address into a web browser. The WRT54g's IP address is<<< I have no clue what to put for my host name >>>Leave it blank. This is only entered if required by your ISP.<<< how to make sure that my wireless network can only be accessible by password. >>>By enabling encryption such as click here it will be necessary to enter the "key" which matches the router's before the Wireless Network Adapters will be able to connect.<<< I'm just learning what SSID means, I still have no clue what it actually does >>>The SSID (Service Set Identifier) is actually the wireless network's name. This is what the Wireless Adapters should find when you scan for Available Wireless Networks.

Hey guys I was having extreme problems with firewalls and antivirus programs conflicting and sending my browsing experience to the lowest its ever been. I decided to dig out my router and use that. I think the firewall program did some blocking and it has stayed in the registry or maybe ive set up my router wrong. I went to the linksys router setup and opened the ports i want to stay open for gaming and stuff but they don't seem to wanna stay open. I will open the port and do a port check to see if anything is coming through that port and it looks good for about 10sec after I open it. If i refresh or try it later it showing as blocked. I have no idea what i am doing wrong. As far as i know i have it all set up right. I have reset the router a dozen times now and still same problem. Linksys has opened up the port buy something is blocking it elsewhere i think.
I did cmd/ipconfig and am using the right IP address. on the linksys setup IP page everything is checked under applications and gaming that is to be checked. Could it have something to do with passwords maybe? When i log in put in password and enter the info just now and hit save changes it opened up for a quick second then shut down.

Before router I was using COMODO pro and AVG pro recent versions
those 2 programs seem to work for a week or so but then they shut me right out from internet explorer/firefox. I could only browse in safe mode. I got rid of both those programs after just buying them

anyone here knoiw how to change the IP address of a the software it came with "auto detects my printer and gives it an IP address....i want to assign my own IP address.

Answer:Linksys WRT54G Wireless G Router

I belive you would change that from the printer properties...

Try this

Open up the Printers panel under Control Panel (or just hit Start then type Printers)
Right-click on the printer you want to fix, select Properties
Switch to the Ports tab
Find the port that is the IP address - it will likely be or something similar
Select that port, then click on Configure
On the line that says”Printer Name or IP Address”, change the IP address listed to the IP address of your printer (which you’d get either from the printer itself by printing a status report, or from your router’s list of connected clients)
Click OK to save the settings
Click back to the General tab and click Print Test page to make sure it works

A while ago I updated my Firmware on the router to whatever was most current on the Linksys linksys site, and everything worked fine while connected through the router to my PC. I began to have some lag issues in video games, so I reset my modem and when I went to plug everything back in I could not connect to the internet, so I had to connect directly to my computer from the modem, which is how I am able to get on the internet now.

Well, now that I have a laptop laptop , I want to be able to get online with it all over the house or use it to multi-task. I just tried to update the firmware and reconnected the ethernet cable from the router to my PC and the ethernet cable from the modem to the back of the router and even after the firmware update I still cannot connect to the internet, or get wireless on my laptop.

Anyone had this problem and/or know how to fix it?

Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advanced.

Answer:Problems with Linksys WRT54G v2.2 Router

What's the exact make/model of the modem?

Try this procedure to get the router connected?
Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on. The following procedure should get you a connection with any broadband modem that is configured to use DHCP for the router connection, such as cable modems, and many DSL modems. If you require PPPoE configuration for the DSL modem, that will have to be configured to match the ISP requirements.
Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.
Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
Boot the computer.

When the computer is completely booted, let's see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

I purchased a Linksys WRT54G wireless router (version 4) from amazon and when it arrived in the mail, there was no CD with it. I thought it was a new router, but I think it must have been used as it has a goodwill price tag on the underside of it. How do I get this router to send a wireless signal throughout my house without the CD?

So far I have connect the blue ethernet cord from the router to my internet modem and another ethernet cord from my router to my computer. I also have both the wireless router and the internet modem powered up. There is one numbered light on which is where I have the ethernet cord from the computer connected to the router and the internet light is blinking.

I have done several internet searches trying to find how I can send a wireless signal through my house with this router and the main thing I got was to go to the address and configure my router. The thing is though, is that while I can configure the router with a password and everything, I still cannot get connected to the internet. Can anyone walk me through this step by step?

I’ve been having an issue with my Linksys router for a couple weeks now. My cable modem seems to work fine on its own. However, when I hook up my router along with the cable modem, it doesn't get anything from DHCP. I can log into my router settings and go to the "Status Page" but it shows nothing but zeros even when I do DHCP Release and DHCP Renew. I reset my router on the back with a paper clip to restore factory settings - still nothing. I even contacted my ISP and they of course told me to call Linksys (they’re so encouraging). So I call Linksys and they’re about as useful as a screen door on a submarine. He told me to download an easy setup and that was like reinventing the wheel. So I’m at the end of my rope. If anyone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it.

The wireless linksys router is connected directly with a wire to the PC using VISTA. I am using a cable modem that is not a problem. The internet connection is intermittently lost and this can happen any time of the day or night. When internet connection is lost I cant go online, VOIP telephone dies and the PC that is wirelessly connected cannot go online. The online activity light on the modem is also dead. Router otherwise is ON.

What we do in this situation is remove the power cord and connect back after 10-15 second and this brings back the internet connection. Everything works fine.

Firmware for linksys router is up to date and sleep/power save option on PC is off. If I can do anything else please help. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Linksys router WRT54G dissconnection issue

If you've got the latest firmware there isn't much else you can do. I had one of those modems die on me and it would lose the connection sometimes too. You could try a 3rd party firmware like DD-WRT, its really nice and gives you a lot more features, just make sure you get the correct one for your revision number.

How is the power source? I've heard if you get voltage spikes/drops from the wall it can cause problems like that. I would think they would have to be fairly significant to cause a problem, but maybe not.

Ok so I've been trying to host games lately. Mostly just Halo and Age Of Empires 1,2,3 and such.. but no one can connect to me.

I've been trying to use Port Forwarding but it hasn't worked... I've trying tell them to connect using all the IP's I can find and they just can't connect to me. I now have my computer set up to a static IP ( and then I set that to DMZ... not sure what that means but it says it opens up all the ports on that computer. But no one can connect... wtf.

Any suggestions or links to places that will help me? (I've been searching for a long time before I asked... believe me...)

I finally joined the 20th Century and got a DSL connection. I'm now using a Linksys WRT54G (version 4) router, ZoneAlarm Pro, and Windows 2000. When I check my computer with Gibson's Shields Up, it tells me that ports 21 and 80 are open and 23 is closed (all others are hidden). Prior to the DSL/router, everything was hidden. Linksys had me forward the ports to a non-existent IP address, but, assuming that even works, it still begs the question of how to hide these ports. There doesn't seem to be anything in the router Administrator that hides ports. Any ideas? Please keep it simple; I only SOUND like I know what I'm talking about.

Answer:wireless linksys router wrt54g problem

Though this problem should not normally occur because of a router but it's more probable to happen because of any fault in your Internet Explorer. You may consider giving it a try with a different browser like Firefox (which can be downloaded from here Firefox website
However if it still gives the same problem then you can try to reset your router to factory default settings. There should usually be a button of Reset at the back of the router. After reset you may need to connect the wireless again after which it should be fine.:knock:

Perhaps someone can help me. I have look through other threads here, but none seem to be directly helpful.

I have two machines running XP Pro. One is a wireless laptop and the other a desktop. At home, I use a linksys wrt54g router to network them and for internet access (Comcast cable). My network works fine, and when I am at home I can successfully use the local ip for Remote Desktop Connection.

What I would like to do is use Remote Desktop on my laptop when I am at school to my desktop at home. I try to use the same of my desktop from my laptop at school and it doesn't work. Also, I have tried but I understand that that only gives me my router address. When I type in this address I get the same problem. So, what IP address do I use for RDC? Also, do I need to enable anything on the router? I have look through the router settings and can't seem to find anything relevant to this. Also, I have disabled Norton Internet Security while I am trying to get this to work.

Any thoughts?

Answer:Remote Desktop and linksys wrt54g router

You need for forward some ports in the router to the machine you wish to contact externally. I did a search in Google, and turned up this post that seems to address your issue:

If you're using Windows XP Professional and you do work on both your home and your office computers, Remote Desktop can be a lifesaver - it's not unknown for me to be working on documentation at home and forget to connect to work to save the file on my office computer, for example. Remote Desktop to the rescue - since I leave my primary home machine on 24x7 and it's connected via DSL, I just remote into the home box and grab the necessary files. No fuss, no muss, and I have it here in time to hand off to the team for review.

However, what if, like my household, you have multiple machines, all of which need to be directly accessible via Remote Desktop from an external location, and you only have one IP address that points to your router? Since Remote Desktop by default looks at port 3389, you can't exactly set up port forwarding to point that single port to all of your machines.

There is an answer, or rather, two answers. Both of them are detailed in Microsoft Knowledge Base articles.

The first one is this:

Configuring the Remote Desktop Client to Connect to a Specific Port - this tells you how to get your client machine (in this case, the one you're on at work) to talk to a different Remote Desktop port than the default. In some cases, this plus a little configuration ... Read more

I connect to the internet through a cable modem. My router was connected and working fine suddenly I couldnt connect to the internet. I disconnected my router and connected the modem directly to the pc and its working fine. I tried resetting the router but its not working. I don't know what else to do. Please help!!!!!

Answer:Linksys WRT54G router can't connect to internet

Let's try my reset procedure and get some information about what's happening.

The following procedure should get you a connection with any broadband modem that is configured to use DHCP for the router connection, such as cable modems, and many DSL modems. If you require PPPoE configuration for the DSL modem, that will have to be configured to match the ISP requirements.

Note that the wireless encryption and channel selection will have to be done after the basic wired connection is established, the first step is to get wired connections working.

Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Hey all,

I am looking to boost my wireless signal so I can stream HD content seamlessly, more than my current WRT54G (v 8, so I can't use 3rd party tomato firmware on that).

I already know quick fixes, such as this

but my question is, will a tomato based linksys wireless G router outperform a wireless N router? Which is the better one to go with. Also, I know there are wireless N routers that also support tomato firmware, which I would be wiling to do, but it tends to get more costly. I would like to stay below $50, if not at max $50.

Any help is much appreciated!

No in my experience with several different setups. No matter how much you try to crank up a G unit with DD or Tomato, (with stock antennas to keep it fair) can't touch what I've had (and still currently have) an N unit broadcast to.

I ran several different wrt54gl versions with DD and Tomato in my current house, an old 3 story farmhouse. My network gear is up on the 3rd floor. I never had full 54 megs with my laptops down on the first floor. Not long ago I snagged a wrt150N for free, so took that home..flashed with DD...replaced my 54gl with it. I get full 54 down on the first floor matter where I am. I can even watch Hulu on my laptop often stuttered before or I had to let it spool up several times during an episode.

this happens with both the main desktop that the router is hooked up to and another laptop on the network.

i also have the same problem with the same router i have at my shore house.

I am so sorry for posting a new message when I've read several posts about this same problem. I have tried everything posted on here without luck. My problem is I had my desktop in for service (just needed a fan replaced and they did a fresh install of my os instead ... ack) and now I am trying to get my wireless router setup. I don't understand ANY tech please dumb it down for me lol. I have an Acer Aspire 5315 laptop with Vista (built in wireless). It was connecting to the internet thru my router before the service to the desktop and now I'm getting "local only" access and at times will get an error DNS or 322. When I first got my desktop back home and everything connected again I was able to get internet on my laptop but it kept disconnecting. I was able to get it back on each time until someone told me that I needed to set up the router again to stop it from "popping off"..ugh big mistake I guess lol. I had a tech from Linksys walk me thru setup because I couldn't get it to setup using the cd that came with the router. Now, I can only get "local only". When I talked to Linksys tech support (several times) they told me that the router was acting as a switch and not a router and gave me instructions on how to fix it....nothing helped. I've read everything on here and nothing has helped. Please help...I'm getting grey hair over this lol. Thank you!!

Answer:Linksys WRT54G broadband router getting local only access

Hi:Ok.Generally speaking adapter driver issues are not uncommon over an os re-install,so,let's start with that possibility and I will need some more info about your environment.
Let’s take a look at the status of the network adapters

Device manager:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.
1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?
4. should be enabled and working properly.
5. If error code,what is it ?

It would be best if you could post a screen shot of Device Manager with the Network adapters and Other devices sections expanded.

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

Make and model of modem and is this a cable or dsl isp ?
And then let's see how your pc "see's " it's environment

hey guys, new user, first-time question. My roommates and I went in on a Linksys WRT54G router for our DSL and we're having issues here. I have a desktop PC, that i'm using wired into the ethernet ports on the router, and it works perfectly for me. My roomies have iBooks, and one of them is having a problem. She's getting a strong signal in the house, but IE and Safari both are being VERY tempermental about pulling up pages. Some pages pull up instantly, some take ofrever and some just won't pull up at all (eBay won't open at all, is sporadic, will open, but not all the graphics, etc). We've been back and forth with Linksys tech (they say they don't know much about Macs yet) and Apple tech (who keeps referring us back to Linksys). Anyone ever hear of this happening? Thanks for a speedy reply, all!!

Hi. I am very frustrated. I have an old Linksys router wrt54g v8. And I have a newer Linksys router ea6350. I use an asus zenbook and it doesn?t have any Ethernet ports. What I want to do is turn the wrt54 into an access point. I have looked up different articles explaining how to do so, but nothing seems to work! I know that I need to change some settings on the wrt54, like disable dhcp etc. Ive tried connecting to the wrt54g by connecting it directly to the modem. I can bring up the settings page for the wrt54g, but anytime I try to save a setting, it says I am not connected to the internet. Then it takes me out of the wrt set up page and onto the smart wifi setup page for the ea6350. I have tried to change the settings on the wrt54g by connecting the wrt¬¬¬54g to a lan port on the ea6350. This doesn?t seem to work either. All that I want to do is to use the wrt54g to strengthen the internet signal in a part of the house where it is weak. Can someone please help me with this? It is so frustrating!

Hi, I have a desktop running Windows 7 currently connected to the internet via DSL (SBC Yahoo), through a speedstream 5100 modem that is also connected through a Linksys WRT54G wireless router.

If this is confusing; let me explain, I am downloading with utorrent right now and someone else who lives here i just can't say no to is downloading; 5 different things at that, I'm trying to download one single thing and it's DRAGGING because of there downloads..

Hi All

I have recently renewed my Linksys WRT54G router and need to security protect my home wifi network. When I access the router admin panel and go to Wireless > Wireless Security > Security Mods, I see the following options:

Disable (currently selected)
WPA Personal
WPA Enterprise
WPA2 personal
WPA2 Enterprise

I assume the mode I need is WEP, but when I select that I am faced with another screen of options, and it is this screen I need information on please (see screenshot).

Which Transmit Key should I select, which WEP encryption should I select, and what passphrase should I use...? Also, when I then do this, what will happen to the laptops on my network when they try to access the internet? Will they be prompted to enter the 4 keys that are generated? Will this be just once, or each time they access the net?

Thanks all.

Hi,I'm using a LinkSYS WRT54G Wireless Cable Router, Ever since i started using it i get slow speeds, I got a 10mb Cable connection and its rapid when i didnt have the router, now its going slow (really slow).I have already checked all possible settings on router config and disabled firewall... nothing seems to work. Can anyone help please??

Answer:LinkSYS WRT54G Wireless Cable Router - Slow Speeds

Are the slow speeds you are experiencing while connected "wirelessly" or by ethernet cable? If "wirelessly", it could be due to a poor wireless link between PC and router caused by interference or the location of the two devices. Try changing the Channel number in the router's wireless settings to see if that brings any improvement.

A while back my company purchased a new router (NG FVS124G) as ours was getting dated (old sonicwall, but not relevant). We received it and used all the old settings from the existing router to get it working, but no luck. We could not get it to connect to the internet, our web server would not work, and our VPN does not work either. After much tinkering, by my manager still nothing. Finally in desparation he brought in his router from home (LS WRT54G) so at least we could get up and running again. Again he loaded the old settings, and bam everything works Internet, Web Server, and VPN.

I have just recently inherited this problem, in a desperate attempt to get a more secure network going. So, this all leads to my question how is it possible the with the exact same settings one router works (WRT54G) and the other (FVS124G) does not?

We are using a static IP address.
Yes, i double, triple, quadruple checked that it all matches.
All ports that are need are allowed (as far as i know).

Any ideas?

Answer:Linksys WRT54G and Netgear FVS124G Router connection problem

From what I am seeing, you need to set the allowed ports and protocols
in the firewall setup in order to get traffic through the WAN.
The lynksys doesn't have this extensive protection.
Pobably just has virtual server and dmz.
You may want to check the manual on setting up WAN traffic
through the firewall.

The subject router has lost the RF output signal. Some observations:
My desktop PC cabled to router works OK.
My laptop sees other wireless networks in the area but not my router.
My wifi sniffer/locator does not detect a signal, even when I hold it next to the router.
I've tried disconnecting the power to the cable modem and router for 30 sec's, and restart modem/router, without success.
Led lights on both the router and modem look normal.

Any thoughts? Is this router dead?

For some reason, my Linksys WRT54G router stops functioning every night. All I have to do is unplug it and plug it back in to get it to work again, but this is a problem because software I run requires internet during the night, while I'm asleep. I have a good feeling this is a settings issue, and not related to the hardware, but any advice or information you guys have would be a great start to solving this problem.

I'm trying to resolve an issue which started out as the main desktop computer losing connection to the internet. (So my focus was on the cable service and the cable modem)

Desktp WinXP (has SP2) - Cable Modem hooked to Linksys wrt54G router.
Router - Wireless - using encryption - Firmware 1.41.2
Desktop is direct connect with other laptops connecting via wireless.

I had just finished configuring new laptop Dell Insperion WINXP home and was trying to get a wireless connection. It sees other wireless networks and didn't see the Main SSID I'm looking for. (Broadcast was disables... accessed router and changed... now can see proper SSID).
Try to connect ... and notice the Desktop has lost connection to the internet and cannot access the Linksys router.

It appears that when we try to make a connection the router goes down. I cannot get access to the router settings.. I have to power off the router for 20 secs and then I can get back in. ....I was able to duplicate this a number of times.

I am looking at the linksys kb and googling ... may be that I just need to upgrade the frimware.

Anybody have issues similar to this or direction to resolve.

Followup: Linksys support suggested changing channel then upgrading firmware..

Some one please help me get my home network operational now that I've changed to using a Bellsouth provided Netopia 2241N-006 modem. Previously I had been using my Linksys WRT54G wireless router successfully with my Cable ISP modem (Charter). I switched this week to Bellsouth in my area, and I can not get the combination of the 2 devices to work. When I connect the Netopia modem directly to my computer, I can access the internet just fine, but when I try putting the router in the middle, I can't get the internet to work. I've tried several different settings on the linksys including the automatic DHCP setting, the PPPoE setting, I've tried cloning the MAC address to that of the netopia modem. I read one thread on here about port forwarding issues with these 2 devices, but it didn't provide me a solution. I would be very appreciative if someone could help.

Answer:Solved: Netopia 2241N-006 modem/Linksys WRT54G v5 wireless router

The Netopia 2241N-006 is a single port router, so what you need to do is one of the following.

Configure the Netopia into "bridge mode" and connect the router in the standard modem/router configuration, or use the following configuration for the secondary router.

Connecting two SOHO broadband routers together.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses through, I'd assign the secondary router as it's IP address.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

I installed a WRT54G v1.1 with DD-WRT on my network, and I've got 2 desktops hooked up to it directly wired and another laptop through wireless.

Every so often, I've noticed that the wired connections will lose access to the internet.

Here is what happened yesterday and again today morning:

1. All connections were fine (wired and wireless) all day Saturday and Sunday.

2. Wired desktops both lose connectivity to the Internet. LAN over NetBEUI still works fine
and wireless connectivity is fine.

3. Pinged, localhost works okay from both computers

4. Pinged no response

5. My IP address after losing internet is still the same as before I lost connectivity.

6. Simple reboot of wired desktops brings everything back to normal until the nex time.

Any thoughts? Do I have a bum router?

One thought, the wireless laptop is Vista and the wired desktops are XP. The laptop drops connectivity when it goes into sleep mode, and it has to be disconnected and reconnected each time it comes out of sleep mode. Could this be causing the entire network to have problems?

Answer:Linksys WRT54G Router Dropping Internet Connection to wired desktops

Can try giving it a hard reset.

Do you run a lot of peer to peer software? They can really bog down routers and sort of lock them up.

I have a Linksys WRT54g wireless router. I use one of the LAN (wired) ports for one of my desktops. However, the other day, the first LAN port died on me. I was surfing the net, when the computer told me that a network cable has been unplugged. I checked the connections, but the problems persisted.

I then moved the cable to the next LAN port over on the built in switch, and that one worked. This leads me to believe that the first LAN port has failed.

What should I do about this? Do you think Linksys would provide me with a new one?

If it's under warranty I'm sure they will remedy the problem. If out of warranty it's your problem.

I checked thru and found another thread with a similar problem, but while there were about 40 posts to it, it ended without really providing me a solution.
So heres my problem :
I HAD a Linksys Wireless Router (WRT54G) which worked fine to connect thru a ISP supplied basic ADSL modem (AZTECH). The Router would hold my login ID and password and automatically log me into my broadnband connection thru the PPPoE. And my Desktop connected to the router was able to connect fine to the Internet. HOwever, two nights ago, my ADSL Modem "died" and I went out and purchased another (ISP does not supply a replacement anymore). I got a Netgear DM602 ADSL Modem.

Now my problem is that the Netgrear modem is a little too smart and tries to be a router as well and also holds the login ID and password. If I connect the Modem directly to my Desktop, it works fine in that it will log in and allow my PC to connect to the Internet. However, if I just set it up as it used to be before - my Router states that it cannot get an IP Address off the ADSL modem and does not connect.

The old thread that stopped in August 2004, said that I had to set different IP addresses on the Router. My router has a default IP of / while the Netgear Modem goes with /

I am sure I have to set something up like a hard code of a gateway or something, but for the life of me, I do not know on which equipment I need to do this. Do I have to turn off the DHC... Read more

Answer:DM602 ADSL Modem thru Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router Problem

Managed to work it out. Apparently the 'smart' Netgear DM602 has to have itself do the logging-in. While you can disable the logging into the ISP part, it wont work after that with any router. So, it has to be allowed to log in and be the DHCP Server.

My Linksys WRT54G Wireless router on the other hand is quite happy to allow the modem to log in, so I had to disable the PPPoE logging in aspect, and also disable it from assuming the DHCP responsibility and when they are connected up, all works well - in almost the factory default state of the LinkSys Router.

But all of this I learnt from LinkSys Customer support. And not from the wonderful people at NetGear, who refused to talk to me about how to get their product to work with a router. They did not tell me that disabling the PPPoE logging in sequence will not work on their DM602. They were pretty much not very helpful when it came to getting their product to work with anything else other than a PC. As soon as it tests ok with the PC, they wash their hands off you. Immediately !

My take, never again a NetGear product.

But LinkSys is GREAT !!!

Anyway, hope this helps someone.

I have a Linksys WRT54G version 1 router. My basic problem is I can't seem to connect to the Internet. My PC can connect to the router and it can detect my Internet settings, but I can't actually connect to the net. There's nothing wrong with my Internet connection. I can still connect to the Internet through my old Linksys BEFW1154 v2 router easily.

I have a Linksys BEFSR41 ver3 Cable/DSL firewall router.
I can access it OK, but each time I go to instal the most recent firmware, I get an error code..'incorrect host address' if I use the installer or error code 'Warning! upgrade file pattern error' if I upgrade through the router.

I have double checked to make sure I have the proper upgrade, and have sucessfully flashed this router in the past.
I reflashed the router with 1.05.00, which is what I started with and it accepted it.
But still does not accept 1.46.02

It seems the firmware version numbers have a bit of 'distance' between them and I do wonder if the Linksys posting is correct:

Any ideas on what might be wrong?

Hello everyone.

I am currently running a Linksys BEFSR41 V3 with firmware 1.06.01. I am not sure if one exists, but is there a firmware, whether official or aftermarket that will add QoS addition to the router?

If not, or if you don't know, what is a good high quality QoS capable router under $100? Going to be using it with DSL.

Answer:QoS Router - Linksys BEFSR41 V3 firmware?

I'd buy a router which supports DD-WRT firmware. It has nice QoS features as well as more features than I've seen offered in any SoHo router. Check the DD-WRT site/wiki for a list of compatable routers. Most are under $100.

I recently decided to upgrade the firmware to my Linksys router. Although I wasn't technically experiencing any issues before the upgrade, my previous version did not include WPA encryption like the newest version.

Since I performed the upgrade, my connectivity is lost anywhere between 2 and 6 times a day. I have isolated this issue to the router by directly connection the computer to the cable modem (no problem then persists). Additionally, the WPA encryption never worked. Whenever I applied a WPA PSK, for some reason, the wireless signal would decrease to virtually non-existent.

Do I need to downgrade the firmware? Does anyone know how I go about doing that?
