1GB DDR3 vs 512MB GDDR5

Question: 1GB DDR3 vs 512MB GDDR5

I read thru the 20 Oct. 2012 "What's the difference between DDR3 memory and GDDR5 memory" and nearly all of that is way beyond my comprehension so I believe I am relatively a newbie on memory! (http://www.techspot.com/community/t...-between-ddr3-memory-and-gddr5-memory.186408/). My question is probably simple for a memory expert but if I have a choice of buying one graphics card and hypothetically they sell for the same price - which card should be my choice --- 1GB DDR3 or 512MB GDDR5? Thank you.

Preferred Solution: 1GB DDR3 vs 512MB GDDR5

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Not much of an upgrade for wanting to spend as much money as possible.

Hey I am replacing my desktop for a laptop and I happen to be wondering if the 1 GB GDDR5 version of the NVIDIA Geforce GT 555m offers better performance than the 2 GB DDR3 version of the card at 1366x768 resolution. Please offer your input and have a nice day!

Answer:GT 555m 1GB GDDR5 vs. 2GB DDR3

At that resolution there is probably no need for 2 gb vram. I would definitely go for the 1 gb GDDR5 version.

So I just recently bought a GT750M SLI and I find that it is the DDR3 type.... my y510p has GDDR5 memory type so my question is: will this be a problem as I need a GDDR5 SLI? or can i run this setup as memory type doesn't really matter? Thanks~ EDIT - can a mod just delete this thread, figured it out.... packaging writing DDR3 on it is very weird as that's to do with RAM, the SLI config worked when I tested it and GPU-Z showed it to be a GDDR5 SLI.

I am not a gamer.

For image editing, which is the more reliable graphics card, DDR3 or GDDR5 ?

I have a GDDR5 in one machine that is not reliable at all and has been nothing but a nightmare. (invidia/EVGA)

Thank you.

Answer:Which is most stable/reliable, DDR3 or GDDR5 ?

Maybe you need a workstation graphics card, they can be quite expensive.

But I would think 5 has to be better then 3

Adding more system memory should also help.

I noticed that the GeForce 7600GTS ([email protected]) is similar in price to the Radeon x1600 Pro([email protected]). This confuses me as DDR3 is faster than DDR2 of course but there is twice the memory. I'm leaning towards the 7600 as I've never used an ATI type of board before but as they now also have beta drivers for Vista this also comes into play. If this is just a balancing act, I'll just go with the 7600 as it's newer and faster technology, no other reason than that. Thanks and please don't go into to much technobabble as I probably won't get it.

as for me i'd choose [email protected], you won't mention the difference between 256Mb and 512, but the speed of the memory is a very important issue.

Hey guys im new here, hoping for some opinions or realistic facts about these two cards

Ive been milling over both of them, have used both of them however i cant really tell which is better so i thought i would seek for some more expert advice. My theory really is one is dd3 ram and the other is double the ram and only ddr2 .. can someone tell me which one is actually better than the other, maybe i can stop going crazy over it.

Hi to all at Techspot. I'm not a techie but noticed that there was two kinds of memory, DDR3 and DDR5. My Question is,
What's the difference between DDR3 Memory and the Graphics DDR5 Memory and if the DDR5 is in anyway better then why is it not used for desktop computer memory instead of DDR3.
I know some apps are taking advantage of or utilizing graphics memory Thanks for any explanation

Answer:If your Notebook memory has DDR3 will your Graphics be GDDR3 (ATI Mobility HD 3650 512MB Dedicated)

If the graphics card is sharing your main ram then the answer is, from what i can remember the HD 3650 use DDR3 ram... some desktop GPU is now using GDDR5 ram, so DDR3 is not high tech any more.

"Dual 2GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M ? SLI" vs "Dual 2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 6970M CrossfireX"

I want to buy an alienware and get confused on the video cards. Which really is better among these two? They say that since nvdia is more expensive it really is faster or better. Confusing part is they are both 2gb gddr5. Is it just the brand or the performance? I read also that Dual NVIDIA GTX 460M 1.5GB GDDR5 Graphics Card in SLI is faster than Dual 2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon HD 6970M CrossfireX, is this true?

Right now im considering amd radeon dual 2gb just because it's "2gb" and cheaper than nvdia dual 2gb. But maybe it is better to get the dual nvdia 1.5gb, I still dont know the exact price differences and if it is worth it. Please help. Many thanks.

I would say 580M's because most games are coded round those cards with physX and CUDA ect ect......

also the cpu and mem shouldn't bottleneck? i'm running 2ghz athlon 32bit 1.5gb ddr3200 and 7600gt agp at mo and mem is definately bottleneck

i have been using charts on

how am i supposed to make this RAM work on my motherboard

Please Help Me

Answer:how to make DDR3-1333 DDR3 4 GB work on my Gigabyte G41-M Combo mobo?

I'm afraid that RAM is not supported, I downloaded the Memory Support List from: (and attached)

GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 775 - GA-G41M-Combo (rev. 2.0)

Also, you are better off getting 2 sticks, since:
Your motherboard:

Features Dual channel memory architecture, best to use two sticks to take advantage of the Dual channel, should be identical RAM sticks.
Multi-channel memory architecture - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
That motherboard supports very few 4 gig sticks at all and fact you have to overclock to handle 1333, I would just buy one step lower: 2 * 2 gig 1066 sticks.

Hello folks!

Just needed to know if I can I use a second DDR3 1600 RAM with an existing DDR3 1333 RAM on 32-bit x64 system running Win 10 pro?

I have looked around on the net about this and some places mentioned that the new RAM frequency must not exceed the motherboard frequency. Is that something I should look into?

Answer:Can I use a secondary DDR3 1600 with an existing DDR3 1333?

Sometimes it will and sometimes it wont work. What should happen is the motherboard should under-clock the 1600mhz DIMM to run at the 1333 of the other DIMM.

As long as both are DDR3, they will physically fit in the motherboard. Try it and see.

Is that a G41M-Combo Rev 1.3?

If so, it supports both DDR2 and DDR3.

But you cannot mix DDR2 and DDR3. All RAM must be one or the other.

The specific RAM you mentioned is not listed on the qualified RAM list, but that doesn't mean it won't work.

From the Gigabyte web site for the G41M-Combo Rev 3:

DDR3:

2 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 8 GB of system memory (Note 1)
Dual channel memory architecture
Support for DDR3 1333(O.C.)/1066/800 MHz memory modules

DDR2:

2 x 1.8V DDR2 DIMM sockets supporting up to 8 GB of system memory (Note 1)
Dual channel memory architecture
Support for DDR2 1066(O.C.)/800/667 MHz memory modules

(Note: Mixed mode, populating DDR2 and DDR3 memory modules simulta- neously is not supported. Go to GIGABYTE's website for the latest supported memory speeds and memory modules.)

Hi Monster212

According to the manufacturer's website specs on your motherboard (MSI Global ? Mainboard - P55M-GD41), your computer should support the faster RAM (when overclocked apparently), and therefore theoretically should acquire faster performance in the 5 - 10% range..

Hope that helps!

Alright guys...so newegg just informed me that I won the following memory in a Facebook contest: Crucial Ballistix 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 with heat spreaders and built in thermal sensor

The wording on the contest is vague, so I'm not sure if I'm getting 4 or 8GB of it. Right now, I have 6 GB of Crucial DDR3 1333 RAM in my comp. I was just wondering how much performance, if any, I would lose by replacing it with the RAM that I won (assuming they only send me 4GB).

Answer:4 GB of DDR3 1600 or 6GB of DDR3 1333?

It depends what your doing with it. If your not doing anything memory intensive then probably hardly any, 4GB is about the sweet spot with Win 7, and the access speed on that RAM is quicker

DDR2 & DDR3 in Motherboard Memory Support Specs ... Aren't DDR2 and DDR3 keyed differently to disallow use of DDR2 into a DDR3 slot etc?   I have seen some boards from asrock that allow DDR2 and DDR3 but it has both DDR2 and DDR3 memory slots. This one only has what looks like DDR3 slots.I looked at the specs here to see if they have a 1600Mhz DDR3 list of supported RAM because I have a 8GB Stick to use. Motherboard calls for 1333Mhz which is all the memory controller will run at. And it looks like the 1600Mhz DDR3 stick should underclock to 1333Mhz. But the DDR2 listed as supported caught my attention. I havent seen any DDR2 with the same keying as DDR3 as well as I am not aware of a DDR2/DDR3 optional RAM slot.  http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=856#memorysupport

Answer:DDR2 & DDR3 in Motherboard Specs ... Aren't DDR2 and DDR3 keyed differently

They are keyed differently. I took a picture of some of the RAM modules I have. (Top to bottom: DDR3, DDR2, DDR, SD-RAM, EDO)My understanding is that boards that claim to support both would have separate slots for each. Similar to how some motherboards supported both SDRAM as well as EDO RAM SIMMs.I think the Memory support for that might be referring to the chipset/Memory controller support? The specs at the top of the page specifically mention "Support 2 DIMM of DDR3 1333MHz up to 32G maximum capacity" with no mention of DDR2. Or perhaps the memory support is listed for a wider model set where some models have different module slots?

Question: 1 GB GDDR5 enough?

Will 1 GB GDDR5 with 4 GB DDR3 1033MHz RAM, 2.2 GHz cpu, be enough to run most modern games like CoD6, Mass Effect 2, and L4D2 at 720p?

Answer:1 GB GDDR5 enough?

You'll get better feedback if you link the specific card, but generally speaking, you should be able to run most games. How well they run depends on the game... some are going to run better than others because of your cpu. At only 2.1GHz it's going to be the video card's bottleneck.

Nvidia have just released the GT240 1GB GDDR5

Quote:
In case you have been a little saddened by delays in Fermi production, and lack of something new by Nvidia. Cheer up today, that is if you like old tech mixed with something new. The GT 240 launched today are not exactly new cards, but they bring support for GDDR5 memory. Boasting of 96 stream processors (oops, forgot they are called CUDA cores now) this is the same crippled G92 core used in the old 8800 GS except that the memory interface is now 128-bit instead of 192-bit in the old 8800 GS.

now this card only has a 128-bit bus, but the higher RAM frequency offests the smaller bus.....so in reality memory bandwidth is equivalent to GDDR3 with a 256-bit bus.
this card will actually replace the 9600GT.

Correct, only DDR3 RAM can be used, any other type won't fit the slots anyway. If you have ECC ram now, you may be able to use non-ECC.

Look in the device manager -- this system has a software-controlled hybrid video setup.  The GPU will not show up in the system setup -- it is controlled by Windows drivers, not the firmware.
This isn't a true dedicated GPU - it's part of a hybrid setup.

I finally gave up on an older upgrade from the original graphics card (Generic) to a Nvidia GT 9400 to ordering a new MSI GT 730. Just wondering if it should install smooth. It is low profile, about the same size of the older original graphics card, and PCI Express x16, it should work, correct?<br><br>I know I won't notice an difference but the old upgraded GT 9400 didn't have a fan, and that can be the only reason why the display would shut off after idling 5 minutes. This was so annoying, not to say damaging to the HDD being I had to hard reboot constantly. I grabbed this MSI Nvidia card being it was only 19.95, figuring 20 bucks isn't a lot to throw at an older PC. I know it isn't going to improve performance, but it should cure the constant display issue. <br><br>Any thoughts? these cards have almost the same prices who gains much performance at gaming

atleast 1280x1024 res or less (720p)
how much is its performance diff.

Answer:hd 7730 gddr5 vs hd 7750 gddr3

Always buy the card with the faster memory if the prices are about the same. GDR5 has a much higher bandwith so will be much faster processing graphics. The GDR3 will be holding back the other card.

Hi guys quick question.
I'm new to the whole pc building/gaming. I've recently purchased an entry level gaming pc. The mother board is an ASRock FM2A68M-HD+ with an AMD A10 7700K processor. It currently has 10gb DDR3 RAM inside. If I were to upgrade my Graphics card to a GDDR5 would I need to change the ram/processor/Motherboard as well, or would it all still be okay? Like I said, I'm new to this and this is probably a really simple answer.

I know the PC is old, with a Pentium D 2.8, but heck, it sill works rather well for my purposes, and I hate to get rid of it.

Graphics cards control the memory onboard,so

Hi Guys,I'd like to inquire if the EVGA GTX 1050 Ti SC 4GB Gddr5 is compatible/can fit in my lenovo m82 sff. I'm recently finding the best gpu for the said lenovo unit, and I've found this gpu online and its best selling in amazon (according to their site). It looks relatively small and some reviews in youtube says it will fit 99% of the built in cpus out there. I'd like to know if anyone has tried to put one in their sff desktops or is it possible and compatible. like will it fit and belong to the 99% or not making the lenovo sff in the 1%? Thanks

Answer:M82 SFF with i5-3470 and EVGA GTX 1050 Ti SC 4GB Gddr5

I don't believe the EVGA GTX 1050 Ti SC card is low-profile, which is what is needed for a SFF case.

I recently installed one of these cards in a new home-built mid-tower desktop machine (ASUS Z170-Deluxe motherboard) and it is absolutely full-size form factor (not low-profile), and takes two slots.
Dimensions

Height: 4.376in - 111.15mm
Length: 5.7in - 144.78mm
Width: Dual Slot

You might look into the MSI low-profile version of this card instead, although it is a double-fan implementation and thus longer than the EVGA single-fan version.  Both cards have DVI, HDMI and DP.  Double-check the length of the MSI card to ensure it can fit in your M82 SFF case.

Just a quick question that came up in my head while I was reading the chapter about RAM in my hardware book... assuming that I'm building a gaming computer for myself with an i7 CPU and x58 chipset, what would give me better overall performance.... installing 4 memory modules of 2GB each and running on dual-channel mode or installing 3 memory modules of 2GB each and running on triple-channel mode?
thank you

Answer:8GB DDR3 (dual-channel) x 6GB DDR3 (triple-channel) Which is better?

Depends a lot on how much RAM your applications need. Triple channel is slightly faster, but if you. Err. Run two instances of Crysis, then you might need 8 GiB so the other solution is 'better'.
My vote goes for 3x2...

Hi Folks,

Just built myself a new machine and I'm having a slight issue with the graphics.

I have a MSI GeForce GTX650 OC 1024MB GDDR5 with three monitors hooked up to it, 2 via DVI and one using mHDMI (this I'm using a mHDMI - HMDI block and a HDMI - DVI block so it fits the monitor.)

My issue is every so often the monitors all go black, the monitors brand logos appear on screen then my desktop appears, all of the windows forced onto the main display.

Event viewer shows no issues, the card is tight in the slot, all drivers & BIOS are upto date.

As I'm typing this I just have talked myself into blaming the 2 converter blocks I'm using.... Could it be anything else?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:New Build | MSI GeForce GTX650 OC 1024MB GDDR5

edit: just removed the converted monitor and the issue still happens.....

Hi,I got a new Sapphire Radeon HD5670 1GB GDDR5 but it won't work. I wanted to upgrade my old graphic card to HD5679 but there must be some compatibility problem with my motherboard (ConRoe945g-dvi, PCIe x16). Would you have any advise how to solve this problem ? Do I have to change some settings in BIOS or something? The card seems to be ok as when the DVI cabel is connected the massage on the screen is changing from "no DVI cable connected" to "Power saving mode"( something like "stanby" mode). Nevertheless when the system starts nothing is happening, the screen stays black. Maybe it is not possible to use my old motherboard with this new card. Please help me.Thanks a lot.

Answer:Sapphire Radeon HD5670 1GB GDDR5 won't work

did you uninstall the driver for your original graphics card? It could of course be a faulty card but can you connect another card to check or put this card in another pc? If the card has an hdmi socket on it could you connect a hdmi cable from it to a tv. When I installed a new card I got nothing on the monitor but the hdmi powered up the tv and I was able to adjust the screen size which got the dvi output working.

Hello Dell,

I see that new Precision series ships with Radeon Pro WX 4130 and WX 4150 graphic cards.
Is there any way to order one of these cards directly through Dell?

I'm curious if these cards are compatible with older Precision M4600 laptop.
M4600 works with AMD FirePro M5100 card.... I imagine it will work with newer WX 4130 card as well?
Please confirm this for me.

Answer:Radeon Pro WX 4130 with 2GB GDDR5 card for Dell Laptops?

You'd have to call Dell Spare Parts for a price;  these cards use a newer format (MXM-A) that's smaller than the older MXM 3, so it's possible they may not fit your system. I don't think Dell would make any guarantees - you'd have to pay your money and try.

@Astyx?, welcome to the forum. You are correct that the PCIe 3.0 is backward compatible to PCIe 2.0.  However, your problem is the motherboard.  The Radeon card requires UEFI in the motherboard instead of a Legacy BIOS. The BIOS can't be upraded to UEFI.  The PCIe 3.0 cards that require UEFI will not work in any other slot.  HP didn't begin using UEFI until mid-October, 2012.  The last cards to operate without UEFI are the GTX 660/670's. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

Answer:EVGA SuperClocked 03G-P4-2666-KR GeForce GTX 660 3GB 192-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 HDCP

This should answer your question. The GTX 660 has 30FPS with ultra quality at 1680x1050. Lowering the quality settings to high, raised the frame rate to nearly 50FPS.
http://www.techspot.com/review/734-battlefield-4-benchmarks/

Final Thought:

...
If you can live with high settings however, you'll boost your frame rates by around 60%, sometimes as much as 80%, which is enough to make the GTX 660 and HD 7850 practical options. ...
Fortunately, there's less to consider when choosing a processor -- just make sure you have a quad-core chip. It doesn't even have to be a new one, as even the Core i7-920 and Phenom II X4 980 took care of business. ...Click to expand...

Side note:

As was the case with Battlefield 3, as long as your processor has four cores/threads, it shouldn't have a problem in EA's latest shooter. The only processors to struggle were the dual-core AMD Phenom and Athlon CPUs, while the game can utilize up to eight threads if your chip has them on tap.Click to expand...

Another improvement would be to get 8GB memory. In my opinion 4GB is boarder-line to being sufficient.

Question: 1GB vs. 512MB

ok im searching the web and bam ATI has a card with one gig of memory. im thinkin wow thats really cool but, can it possibly be worth the $1,500 asking price? wouldnt two 512 cards be about the same? and cheaper? ATI's x1900xtx is only $500 (of course ATI doesnt have sli as far as i know). nvidia makes cards that compete with it....
all im askin is do u think it would be worth the money to get a card with one gig of memory or will 512 be more than enough?

Answer:1GB vs. 512MB

Where did you find that card??

Also, 1GB of graphics memory would be completely useless right now. Still, 512Mb is too much.

Anyway, I recommend a 512MB Radeon X1900XTX or Geforce 7900GTX (very expensive ones though)

Hello,

I'm considering investing in more RAM- 512MB more RAM for my system to bring it up to 1GB.

My motherboard is an Asustek A7N8X-LA, supporting DDR RAM DIMMs up to 1 GB with two slots. Reading the specs, my motherboard supports 333 / 400 Mhz speeds. I currently have one stick of 512MB DDR RAM clocked at 333Mhz.

My question is, should I purchase another stick of 512MB DDR RAM at 333Mhz...or should I scrap my current RAM and purchase a stick of 512MB DDR RAM clocked at 400Mhz for my system? Is a jump from 333Mhz to 400Mhz worth it?

...of course, I could always purchase a stick of 512MB DDR RAM clocked at 400Mhz, and bung it in my system with the current 512MB 333Mhz RAM, even though they'd both operate at 333Mhz.

Answer:512MB to 1GB, or 333 to 400?

I would go for 1gb of ram, even though it would run at a slower speed, but having more ram would help quite a bit.

Question: 512mb+2gb ram

I had a 512 mb ram before, which is about 1.5 yr old. Recently i purchased a 2gb ram. I have two slots for ram. I was using both at a time and windows was showing 2.5 gb ram. Yesterday one of my friend told that it is not wise to use an older ram with a new one. Moreover he told that i can place 2 gb ram with another 2 gb or 1gb but this 4:1 ratio will harm computer performance. So i removed the older one. But since then i have found no change in performance.
Should i put the older ram again. Please suggest..
Thanks in advance..

helloi am building a pc, now its time to buy the ram?i have a AMD athlon 2700+ and asus mobo! should i get 2 x 512mb or 1 x 1gb?thanks jim

Answer:DDR RAM 2 x 512mb or 1 x 1gb?

(1) Is your motherboard support "dual channel"? Then it is better to get matching pair.(2) No to (1), then maybe better to get 1GB in case you want to get another another stick when it gets dirt cheap.

Question: 512mb or 1gb gpu

hi, I think my gpu (7900gs) is on its way out , and was looking at a couple of cards, the thing is i don't no whether to get the 9800gt 512 (pny) or the 1gb (Inno) , I am using a 24'' mon' and i'm playing games at 1920x1200.

Is it worth me getting the 1gb version as i have read that most games don't use the extra memory, but have also read that at higher res the 1gb would be wise, but there are alot of contradicting arguments, .. can anyone please advise?

:confused

Answer:512mb or 1gb gpu

from the things i have seen with my own eyes when over some different friends houses at that resolution i would go 1Gb its noticeable in my opinion
and this is based off three all most identical systems including my own just with different size video ram
seams like at lower resolutions cant tell but when in the 1900+ its starts to show

Hey guys i currently have a gaming rig but only 4GB of ram in there Clocked at 7
ive just ordered 8GB of exactly the same ram for a good price will this effectivley make a difference to performance in any way shape or form ?

Answer:8GB DDR3 CL7 Ram

For gaming, probably not enough that you would even notice. You also have to remember that most games are still only 32 bit and as such, unless they are large address aware or 64 bit they are limited to 2 GB total address space,

Question: Ddr3 ram

While browsing the specs on several motherboards I'm considering, I noticed in the RAM specs, that some listed 1600MHz DDR3 (over clocking). What does the parenthetical note mean? Does it mean that this speed of RAM is only needed if the rig is over clocked?

I also noticed that one board listed ECC or non-ECC in the specs. I'm sure that ECC is more expensive...is it worth it?

Answer:Ddr3 ram

When you overclock your system there are several ways of doing it. One is to increase the speed of the Bus, meaning it's a synchronous overclock. This means that all the devices controlled by the Bus speed are going to run faster than they were intended to, including the RAM. If your RAM was barely fast enough to keep up at the regular clock speed it would likely give you errors when running at a higher speed. One way to solve this is to buy RAM rated faster than necessary. When you overclock the Bus the RAM has no trouble keeping up.

This also avoids the possible downside of an asynchronous overclock, one where CPU end of the Bus gets boosted but the rest of the system stays at stock speed.

ECC memory is used mostly in servers. Unless something has changed (or I'm just flat-out wrong ) it actually runs a tad slower than non-ECC RAM, mainly because it needs an extra step to check the data passing through it before it gives it the okey-dokey. Unless you have a specific re... Read more
