Unable to get to login screen, works in Safe Mode but in Safe Mode w/ Networking

Question: Unable to get to login screen, works in Safe Mode but in Safe Mode w/ Networking

I'm new here and in hopes of getting this resolved. I just installed the new Norton Systemworks 2005 and rebooted after installation. When the boot screen got up to the blue screen with the Windows XP logo before displaying the login names where you put in your password, it just stops. I restarted a few times and waiting a few more times thinking it may need to 'finish' installing. But each time gave the same results. Finally, I went in with 'Safe Mode' and got in with no problems. Tried again in normal mode after looking around for any obvious problems (none found)... back to square one. Tried again in 'Safe Mode with Networking' and it failed like normal mode so I suspected a networking problem??? The last thing I tried which made me mad is that I tried to uninstall Norton Systemworks in 'Safe Mode' and that failed!! Anyone in these forums know the cure? :dead:

Preferred Solution: Unable to get to login screen, works in Safe Mode but in Safe Mode w/ Networking

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Unable to get to login screen, works in Safe Mode but in Safe Mode w/ Networking

Just a thought

Safe-Mode
Start \ Run \ msconfig \ diagnostic startup
disable any services attached to your most recent install and restart
should get warning next boot about using msconfig, its ok
One key service that needs to be available is the installer service
Try the uninstall, if doesn't complete
Try the uninstall string in the registry only if you know what you are doing

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Under it you will see a list of installed programs. Some don?t show up as words but you can figure out what they are by looking at their values. What you are looking for is the uninstall string. Double click that key as if you were going to modify its value. Do a CTRL + C to copy and then exit the registry editor.

Go to START \ RUN and paste the uninstall sting and hit enter. This should launch the uninstall.

Just a thought though as I am not infront of a test system at the moment. You should research this a little further so you have a clear understanding of what you can and can't do with msconfig.

or simpler yet

Safe-Mode

Start \ Programs \ Access. \ System Tools \ System Restore

Select restore point prior to install of whats giving you the problem.

Again, Good Luck

PS If you try to install it again, turn of antivirus and other open programs etc..

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum and really hoping you can help me :)

My internet has not been working on my laptop, which happened very suddenly 2-3 days ago. The connection is fine on my other computer and phone, so I know its not the internet itself. Even on the laptop, it SAYS the wifi is connected, but its not working. Firefox was instantly crashing, it wouldn't even bring up the browser window. Chrome gives me a "DNS address not found" error for every site I try and IE wont load anything.

I've tried flushing my DNS, using that ipconfig /refresh and /renew thing. I've tried troubleshooting the wifi connection, disabling/enabling it. I ran a Malware Bytes scan and only found a couple of "pup" programs/cookies that have been deleted. Currently running a SuperAntiSpyware scan.

The thing is, I tried using the internet in Safe Mode with Networking and it works just fine! So that means a program or something on my computer is causing it, right? There were issues with my Teredo Tunneling Psuedo-Interface driver the other day, it had a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark, but I did a couple of fixes that I found on help sites and that exclamation is gone now.

Please help, I really want to use my laptop on the internet again ;_;

Oh, and the specs for my comp are:
Lenovo Win7 PC
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2410M CPU @ 2.30 GHz
RAM: 6 GB
Windows 7 - 64 bit operating system

Answer:Internet works in safe mode w/ networking but not normal mode

In Network and Sharing Center, there is a wizard to troubleshoot connection problems. If that doesn't work, you could "set up a new connection".

Hi! I'm just a new here, hope someone can help and give advice here. (Sorry if this is not the right thread to start my topic)

Scenario: (this is my first time to encounter this problem)

I use my laptop and other PC to checked if there's internet and yes they are still connected. I restart my pc again and found out after boot up a message box appear says "No AMD graphics driver is installed, or the AMD driver is not functioning properly. Please install the AMD driver appropriate for your amd hardware"

I did uninstall / install my driver but the message box still prompting after restart.

Anyone experience this?
Sorry for my bad english.

Answer:No internet in normal mode but works in safe mode with networking

The first thing i would do is stay in safe mode and run a virus scan.

-edit-
Also check for a system restore point.

Use your Install DVD. When on the install now screen choose repair in the left side of screen. Select your OS. Then When at the GUI select system restore. Choose a date before all this happened.

I realize that there are many threads with this title, but as far as I can tell, my case is unique.

The computer I use is an e-machine ET1331G. Specs are: 6 gig ram, 700 GB hard drive, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

So, there was an instance in which I shut down my computer by holding the power button, due to a problem with windows update being stuck on the first update if I tried to shut it down normally (I did the microsoft fix program the other day, but the thing crept back up and I didn't feel like doing it today).

When I tried to restart the thing, it would lose the video feed into the monitor. I popped my case open to see that the graphics card I installed (a Nvidia Geforce 9500GT) had gotten really hot and I took it out. I went to the PC's integrated graphics card but all that accomplished was getting a black screen with a cursor on it.

Safe mode works perfectly fine, but the normal start up doesn't at all.

I tried start up repair to no avail, I have scanned my hard drive with chdsk with no errors found, used sfc/scannow with no errors found. I have tried to fix windows update with the fix it program in safe mode, but it can't seem to fix it at all, in fact, windows update doesn't open in safe mode (but this could be normal for all I know).

Answer:Login replaced with Black screen with cursor, safe mode works

Black screen after login, cruiser still works,

Hello all,

To get straight to the point, I have an Asus G74SX-XR1. It's got an Nvidia GeForce 560M video card. I use this computer for my karaoke business. After one night everything was fine, but then I tried to turn on my computer the next day and I got to the "starting windows" screen but then at login I got black screened. Naturally I thought a driver problem, so I went into safe mode (screen works) and tried different drivers but none of them allowed me to see the normal windows startup.

I thought, ok, I just want and need a working computer, So I decided to upgrade and go to an SSD. I installed it and decided to reformat. Well upon reformatting, I still get the same problem!!! No login screen. The backlight is on but as soon as the finish setup screen appears I lose any graphics on the screen. Please help! Urgent!

EDIT: External VGA monitor works fine. Only laptop display doesn't. It's not the display/screen because it shows the post and starting windows perfectly.

Answer:Black screen at login, works in safe mode, done research no solution found

If your laptop display is only working in Safe mode, that means you have a driver issue, or you have it set to only use an external monitor.  You can go into the bios and set it to use only the laptop LCD.  Unhook the second monitor from the unit.  Also when you get into Safe mode, uninstall both the monitor & GPU drivers, along with any associated software for the Graphics chipset and monitor.

When windows boots back up, it will find and load the default Microsoft or manufacturer drivers for your machine.  Now of course, you can boot back into Safe mode, and install the drivers downloaded from the manufacturer website for your machine.  NVidia has been having issues with their drivers, both for Windows & Linux, so do not download from their site, the generic drivers for your GPU.

I am not able to connect to any webpages in normal mode, even after restarting i still have the same problem [However it works in safe mode with networking]. The network connections show that it is connected and the signal strength is excellent. I then have to keep restarting the laptop like 3 to 4 times and it works. Its kind of frustrating to keep doing this all the time and besides i am scared by restarting the laptop so many time can harm it.

What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, kaspersky or Mcafee or any free security suites like zonealarm, AVG , Webroot etc

Lenovo will also come with a trial ware program - cant remember which
I would also remove AVG 2013 - using the removal tool - see below

have a read here and post back as much info as possible
Pre-posting Requirements - for both Wired and Wireless Connectivity Issues

Normally are you using wireless - and in safe mode with networking - are you still talking wireless

can you connect to the router with a cable and if so does that work in normal mode ?

Lets see an ipconfig /all in both normal and safemode with networking - make sure you also tell us which is which when you post

Hello,

I've got a peculiar and suspicious problem, but an expert in the Malware Removal forum found no infection on my computer (see the thread here.)

One of the symptoms I'm seeing is that the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) installer will not complete without errors in Windows XP Pro SP3 after a normal boot. After acknowledging the errors during the install routine (which are always the same, a screenshot is attached to this thread), the installer seems to finish. However, the second symptom is that MBAM then will not run due to the same pop-up error message. It's a Visual C++ Runtime Library error that says, "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information." Please see the screenshot in this Malware Removal thread.

I know that normally, some malware will disallow running the normal filename for MBAM, so the first thing I tried was renaming the file to something else, including using different file extension such as .com, .bat, .scr, and .pif. None of these renaming attempts worked. This is where I started to observe really strange behavior. After uninstalling my first MBAM install attempt, I found that I could install MBAM when booted to Safe Mode (after changing the registry to allow this and starting the installer service in Safe Mode). After the install I could also run MBAM in safe mode. I then rebooted to normal mode, and MBAM sti... Read more

Windows only opens in safe mode, tried reloading drivers, last known good configuration, etc. When in normal mode black screen only, when acessing task manager shows all processes stopped and will not allow me to start them.

Hello CliffordJ. Microsoft Security Essentials is installed, correct? Many MSE users running Vista (but not all) suffered black screen after login following installation of Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - 4.9.218.0 (KB3140527), released about a month ago. In fact there is already a thread here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/606422/windows-vista-x64-bksod-after-login-or-no-access-in-normal-mode-suspect-mse/. The posters there disabled MSE 4.9 in Safe Mode by unticking a brand-new setting in the UI (Administrator > Turn on this app). Another method of escaping this situation would be to restore your system to a point before the update was installed, then hide the update in Windows Update. That would allow you to resume using MSE 4.8 if you wish.

I am extremely curious why this happens to many but not all MSE users running Vista. If more advanced forum members ask you for further information, I hope you will cooperate. Above all, I wonder if any other security software with real-time protection is installed (or perhaps improperly uninstalled)? Of course there is a possibility that your issue is something else...

Hello,

Recently my dad's computer had a corrupted hive and boot.ini. Via this website, I was instructed to run a chkdsk /r while in the recovery console. Everytime I used his OS disk to get into the recovery console, it prompted me for a password and I didn't know it (nor could I leave it blank). I decided to use my OS disk from my computer and I could fix the problem. Now, though, everytime I startup the computer, it prompts me to start windows normally, in safe mode, in safe mode with networking... To give further information...on that same screen there is an option for Windows XP and Windows XP Home Edition. Don't know if that has something to do with it. They both work though when I press enter on either one. Could anyone help me stop the computer from prompting me??? Thank you for any help.

This morning we had a power outage and when I turned my computer back on, it would not boot. I tried several times to hard boot, with no luck. Then I tried safe mode. Ran an antivirus scan and it showed malware and several infections which it cleaned. The computer still would not boot normally. I then ran chkdsk, still would not boot normally. I have ran malware bytes, registry repair and the registry defrag program as well as done a disk clean up. It still will not boot in normal mode.
Since my last problems that you helped me with, I have upgraded to a broadband internet connection and have a home network. The 2 other computers on the network are fine.
A week ago, I had purchased Avast internet security and had problems immediately. It would not allow me to connect to the internet. That was uninstalled and I went back to the free Avast antivirus, Zone alarm and Spyware blaster. I was very unhappy with Avast customer service and support iYogi and decided I did not want Avast on my computer at all. I have since downloaded PC tools free antivirus. Once I have my computer operational again, I am open to suggestions.
Fortunately, I did not change anything on the other 2 computers. Just mine.
Running Windows XP 3 .
Thank you.

Hey guys, I seem to be having trouble, and I'm not terribly inclined with laptops and computers, mine is an HP G62 laptop, and that's about as far as I know about it. The other day I went to use it, opened it up, I had 3 tabs open (google chrome), and I tried to open a new tab. All new tabs were freezing, and my itunes had frozen as well. I tried closing the laptop, hoping it would go into sleep mode, but it didn't, it stayed running. I reopened it and the screen stayed off, so I did a hard reset (holding the power button to turn it off) and started it back up. I started it in normal mode, and logged on, but after loading from the log on screen, it went to a black screen with just the cursor, and stayed there. I did another hard reset, and started it in safe mode, and now this is how I'm currently running. I've tried disabling the display drivers and restarting, that worked momentarily, but froze shortly after. Next, I tried a system restore, which did absolutely nothing, and then I ran chkdsk and, again, nothing. After all this, I decided to try uninstalling the display drivers, which, once again, did nothing. This seems to be all the info I have gathered from online, and through friends' help, there seems to be nothing left to do that may fix this problem. Anyone have any idea on where to go from here?

Answer:Black Screen in Normal Mode. Only Safe Mode Works.

Hello ericberard,

You?re having a problem with the computer going to a black screen.

First test the hardware.

Turn off the computer

As you power it back on, tap the F2 key. This will load hardware diagnostics.

Once the screen loads run the startup test.

If this is windows 7 and the startup test pass.

Power back off the computer.

As you power it back on, tap the F8 key. This will load Advanced Boot Options.

Select Last Known Good Configuration.

This will take the system back to when everything was working correctly.

Clicking the White Kudos star on the left is a way to say Thanks!

Let me know how everything goes.

Have a good day.

Alright this is a family's laptop that is about 5 or even more years old...has windows xp on it dont know the exact one -.-...alright.

My sister has been using it and says she has never done anything to it...which i dont believe but anyways this computer will not boot up what so ever...everytime you power it on it goes to the screen that says unexpected error software/hardware problem yada yada yada...and then it gives you the options of boot in safe mode, safe mode networking, safe mode command prompt, last known good configuration...and none of those will work...we do have the recovery disks to wipe it but are trying to find a better way if possible...and when you try to load into any of the safe mode choices it stops at multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys...will stay at that for about 5-10 mins and then just turn off...if you try to just do normal mode or last known configuration it just acts like it loads with the windows and the little green loading bar then shuts off...the more i type the more i think the harddrive is toast but im new and learning so i probably could be wrong. Just looking for suggestions =)

Oh and this pc will run very hot...so if its a hardware issue i would not be surprised.

Answer:HP Pavilion will not boot in safe, safe w/networking, safe command or in normal mode

Hello,
I need your help. My Dell Latitude 620 laptop now has WIN 7 32 bit. It ran fine for about 2 weeks after the install of WIN 7 last February, but now it's a mess: I cannot get get any internet pages to work well, it is very sluggish, and MS Office 2010 does not seem as compatible as on my HP desktop with Win7.

Hopefully, the logfile from HijackThis will suffice instead of TSG SysInfo. If not, I can do the latter in safe mode as well. the Logfile follows. I hope you can help and thank you.

Hi there.

Please help, I have looked at the other posts and followed the great advice, this nothing. I would like to say thanks for your incredibly useful and user friendly instructions to sorting out PC problems. I, like quite a few others it seems, have a problem with internet access.

The problem:
I have 2 PCs ? 1 HP media centre desktop and 1 Sony Vaio Laptop. This problem only relates to the Sony Vaio laptop as the PC can still access the internet without any problems at all.

Sony latptop: running XP SP2; 1.73GHz, 513 RAM, NVDIA GeForce Go 6200.
When I access the internet through IE or through Firefox I get the same error: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage. Outlook and Windows updates still seem to be working, and I can see that I am connected by the Windows wireless icon, by ipconfig /all (results below). The internet works in windows safe mode (with networking).

What I have tried:
Unistalled all antivirus and firewalls (previously had Lavasoft Adaware and Avira). Have reset the router
Have removed security from the router
Have removed all PC checking software
Run the steps in your help section: i.e. spybot, superantispyware, CCleaner, Combo-fix., MGtools, etc.
Various pieces of Malware were found and successfully removed and all seems to be clean.
Reset IP address and flushdns, also reset winsock
I have disabled services and startup items through msconfig and services.msc and even tried to replicate the services in safe mode... Read more

I'm having a very difficult problem. I'm unable to use my computer at all in full mode. Networking works for about 30 seconds then stops working in a normal boot into Windows XP. I can't update my antivirus software (I use Vipre) because of this issue. Networking only works when I use Directory Services Restore Mode and Safe Mode with Networking. I have no viruses or malware infections. I need help with this. I am unable to update my av software as a result of this problem and I love keeping it up to date for the sake of my computer's protection.

Answer:Internet and Networking only works in safe mode.

are you sure you not infected?? sounds like a tcip issue that has been wacked by a virus. down load a av boot cd and run that. i use avg boot cd catches everything so far and will update to the latest database

Hello folks, I suppose I should introduce myself first, but I thought I'd pose a query here as I'm just back off my hols and struggling with a poorly PC
It died just before we went away after some MS updates a few weeks ago, it's been BSOD in normal mode ever since, but will boot into Safe with networking. (or at least it will do now after much toil on my part)

The spec is a bit odd, but it's been working fine for ages, though it has had a couple of recent hiccups.

XP SP3 Biostar MOBO TF7150u-m7 4 GB memory
I was running a dual screen of a GeForce 9500GT, but just reverted to single screen of MOBO video in case that was the issue, but sadly no change.

Storage is software RAID 1 2 x 1TB with multiple partitions, of which C drive contains operating system.
There is also a separate 500GB PATA drive with more data on it.

For some reason the Minidump isn't writing on BSOD even though it's set to from Control Panel and also seems to be set to in the registry.
Also I cannot disable rebooting after BSOD, but can get into Safe mode after the first Normal mode failure.
Video camera pointing at screen shows STOP 0x0000007f, but I can't get the rest of the digits to record at the moment as it doesn't flash up for long enough.

A while ago I got immediate BSOD when I plugged an SD card in with some photos on it, which caused major grief, and wouldn't even get into Safe Mode subsequently.
It didn't write minidumps then either.
I uninstalled (and lat... Read more

Internet only works in Safe Mode (with networking) ? normal mode outlook downloads and some updates work, but, no internet

Hi there.

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please do not post inline logs like you are doing. The READ & RUN ME explains in several places how to attach log files. Halo also gave you a link on how to attach logs in the Software Forum thread you started.

You need to attach the requested logs from SUPERAntiSpyware and MGTools which did not ask you to post a HijackThis log.

Ok, so for anyone wondering, I could not find out what was causing my browsers to not work correctly. I decided to just restart my computer back to its factory setting from once I bought it from the store. My browsers work fine now. I still do not know what was causing the problems. If I had any restore points set I would have reset my computer back to a earlier time. I am sure this would have fixed everything. If you are having this same problem with your browsers, I recommend you reset your computer to a earlier restore point.

Hi everyone,

I walked away from my computer last night with only Google Chrome running, and 2 tabs: AOL mail, and Facebook/FarmVille. When I returned to it, the browser froze. I hit cntl alt del to close the program. Things still seemed slow after everything was closed, so I tried a reboot. However, it won't let me past login. I get the word welcome with the spinning circle and nothing else.

In safe mode, things were fine, just a little slow. I scanned with Webroot twice, and nothing was found.

I was browsing for suggestions last night and Tried sfc/scan now... That came back normal too. Another suggestion was some anti malware programs, downloaded Nader safe mode with networking. That's how I learned I get the same freeze at login with that startup.

I'm not a computer nerd but use them regularly and am willing to try some things before taking it into a shop, so I'm open to suggestions. Last month I contracted Trojans and while it was at Best Buy being repaired, they realized the hard drive was going bad, so I have a new hard drive, if that makes any difference.

Please help!

Answer:Freeze at login, cannot use safe mode with networking either

Good Evening,
I could do with some pointers on resolving an issue. I can only boot into windows in safe mode in Windows 10. Normal mode and safe mode with networking doesn't work. The problem occurred after a windows update. I have removed the latest updates that were installed and cleared any pending ones but it still won't boot properly. I have also run the troubleshooter and tried to recovery to an earlier date which also doesn't work.
The laptop is a HP ENVY 17 notebook. At boot it just gets to the HP logo with the circular loading icon and no further and can only boot it into safe mode. Can anyone recommend the next steps? I have also tried the following;

stopping startup itemsuninstalling hardware driversremoving recent softwarerunning troubleshooters at bootsfc scandiagnostic/selective startups with minimal services running
Would the fact that I cant boot into Safe Mode with Networking imply its a network driver related issue?
Bit of a dead end really, any help would be much appreciated
Kind regards
Trevor

Answer:Can't boot into Normal/Safe Mode with Networking, only safe mode...

Hi Trevor and welcome to Tenforums. There are several ways to approach your problem. When I was reading your post, my initial impression was the same as yours, the Network driver was causing your issue. To be safe, go to Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features uninstall a program and sort the drivers by date installed. See which drivers were installed at the time you began having the problem. If you find any, I think it would be safe to assume the problem would be one of them. If you have another computer, go to the HP website for your model computer and download those drivers to a USB Flash Drive. Do one at a time and install the drivers you just downloaded and reboot until you find the offending driver. I would do this one at a time so you will know which driver it is in case Windows Update decides to install it again. See if that will work for you.

After attempting to start my Laptop in Safe Mode, it loaded drivers normally only to crash a few seconds later. A prompt message appears but is impossible to read because Windows immediately reboots upon showing the prompt.

Any ideas or advice?

The computer is an Acer 4743G running Windows 7 Home Basic x64.

Hi, basically my Internet Explorer will keep on displaying the "Interet Explorer cannot display this webpage" error in Normal Mode. However, it works fine in Safe Mode with networking.

Does anyone have any suggestions? It's really annoying as i do not want to have to use my computer in safe mode every time i want to go on the internet!

Thanks!

Answer:Internet explorer only works in Safe Mode with Networking

After booting into Windows normally, temporarily disable all but 1 antivirus suite or firewall and see if you can connect.

[Note: If you're not able to connect with only 1 running, try disabling that and see if you can connect. But know that your computer is very vulnerable if you do so. Only connect to a site such as Google's home page where you know you won't be susceptible to malicious content.]

Hello;

My Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit works only in Safe Mode with Networking.

If I try to start Windows Normaly; it crashes and restarts with the message that Windows has recovered from an expected error. It's a blue screen with some memory dump message... I can't really read it as the screen disappears... It keeps happening.

It is Lenovo Laptop with Windows Vista Home Premium (SP2) with Intel Core 2 Duo CPU 2.10GHz; 3GB (2+1) RAM, 32-bit OS.

It had C: & D:

(i) I have taken backup of my Data.
(ii) I have tried to run on both the RAMs (1 GB & 2 GB) to see if the problem was with any of the RAM. It still restarts.
(iii) It runs fine in Safe Mode with Networking
(iv) I have formatted D:
(v) I have run chkdsk to check any error on C: it didn't find any error.
(vi) I have re-installed Windows Vista Home premium (using lenovo product recovery DVD) & upgraded to Service Pack 2.
(vii) I have also updated Device Drivers.
(viii) I couldn't run OneTouch System Restore as I had increased size of my C: partition.

However problem remains. It keeps restarting. I cannot run Windows Update to look for an Windows Patches as my machine restarts.
and I assume I cannot run Windows Update in Safe Mode.

If it is an hardware Issue then how come it is working in Safe Mode with Networking.

What could be the problem? Someone please help.

Thanks
Subodh

Answer:My Windows works only in Safe Mode with Networking but not Normally. Help needed!

Windows Safe Mode loads Windows with minimal drivers. If it works in Safe Mode but not normal mode, it is one or more of the drivers. You should not have removed the Recovery partition, this included all your default drivers and would have been real easy to restore your computer.
Try to start Normally. When it fails, boot into Safe Mode with Networking and go to Start/Search and type event viewer and press enter open up the Windows and Systems logs and look for anything with a Red X (critical) double clicking it will give you the properties and tell you what driver or program is that is causing the problem. You can also download Resplendence Software - WhoCrashed, automatic crash dump analyzer which will tell you as well. If you are getting BSOD, please click on this link Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions - Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7 & Vista and do those things and post in that section of the forum and not here please.

Hello, I am just wondering, isn't this a known issue, there is a folder in c:\windows\system32\catroot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE} that has to have so many files in it. Any .tmp folder, in catroot, you have to copy to {F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}. Rename bootcat.cache to bootcat.bck in c:\windows\system32\CodeIntegrity. I did all that. Also turn off Driver Enforcement in the F8 menu. I can get into safe mode with networking, and I can save to / copy from a remote share, any file, and I can ftp. This was a McAfee problem. I thought they fixed it? Still get a blue screen no matter what.

I'll try to give you guys as much information about the problem as possible. My operating system is Windows 7.I'm not sure what caused the problem. I get an error page when I open up Internet explorer(homepage).I Try to go to other websites and this does not work. It worked in normal before when I used system restore to get the computer to an earlier date. After a while Microsoft kept updating and the system restore point too became newer(more recent) until using system restore no longer made a difference. I only encounter these problems in normal mode, but everything is fine in safe mode with networking. Not sure if anyone can help me but thanks anyways.

Welcome to Major Geeks!

You appear to have multiple antivirus programs installed (Symantec and McAfee) You need to uninstall one of these immediately before doing anything else. If you believe that Symantec had already been uninstalled, it did not uninstall properly. Thus if it is the case that you though Symantec was already removed, please run the below then reboot. After reboot run it one more time.

Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT)

Then please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First. If TDSSserv is not found, just continue on with the READ & RUN ME.

Hello,

PC --- wireless --- Netgear WL router --- DSL modem --- Internet

This is an old PC with Windows XP with SP2 and Netgear WG111v3 USB dongle. The PC was connected over wireless to a Netgear Router (sorry dont remember the model number - I will mention it a bit later since I am typing this from a laptop not near the above setup).

As usual, everything was working fine, when suddenly one day, the PC would not connect over wireless anymore. I tried re-entering the password manually on the WG111 GUI, but it did not work. I even removed the security on the Netgear router so that no password is needed. But it still did not connect.
Meanwhile I was able to connect to that same Netgear router from this laptop before and after removing the password (after making necessary config changes on the network setup on the laptop).

When I did ' ipconfig' on the PC, it would show that the IP addr was 0.0.0.0.
When I checked the ' Attached Devices' on the Netgear router, I would see the MAC address of the PC, but it would not show the IP addr and the PC name.

When I tried to go into Settings -> Control Panel -> Networking -> Wireless adapter -> Protocols -> IP, the properties button was grayed out. When I clicked on the 'Install' button, I got the following error:

The string universal unique identifier (UUID) is invalid

I tried System Restore, and I briefly succeeded in getting a wireless connection, but when I rebooted, it wen... Read more

Answer:[SOLVED] Wireless networking works only from Safe Mode

I'm guessing that some other device (more exactly it's driver) is conflicting with the driver for the Netgear usb wireless adapter. It works in safe mode with networking because in that mode only the network driver is loaded, which means no other third-party driver can interfere with it.

The offending driver may not be a hardware driver. Third-party firewalls and antivirus software also install drivers, as do some CD-burning applications.

Hi,
I try to help people with internet connectivity issues. Lately, this has been bothering me a lot. You get into safe mode with networking (f8 at startup) and everything works fine. The connectivity is fine. Some people have slow browsing issues, they are sorted out in safe mode with networking. For some, the computer freezes up while browsing in normal mode, but works perfectly in safe mode with networking.

The next valid step in troubleshooting would be to perform a clean boot (How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state) i.e. disable all of the startup items and services.
But, I've notices, quite a few times, this does not work. People have performed scans and found no viruses (so this means that we cannot attribute the cause to spyware).

My question is : Is there something we can do if a clean boot does not work?

Thanks in advance, must say that the people out here are very helpful and do not hesitate in sharing their knowledge with others

Answer:Safe mode with networking works, but clean boot does not

Thanks in advance, must say that the people out here are very helpful and do not hesitate in sharing their knowledge with others

Hi and welcome

If safe boot with network works then connectivity as you said is not the problem. The problem is different with each different machine. I assume you are talking about more than one.
An obvious choice would be to type event viewer in search. go to the windows logs>application tab. Look for errors (red in the left column) that contain app hang, app crash, etc. When you find them not the event ID and source ... Read more

Hello,
I am helping a friend with their pc and the internet is working in safe mode with networking only. When in standard mode, it shows I am connected and I can ping websites with cmd and receive packets, but I cannot connect with IE8 or firefox, and no programs can connect to update.

This happened after malwarebytes cleaned malware from this pc. It also, showed that avira antivirus was having a problem, but when I checked in add remove programs avira is not in there.

It is running xp with service pack 3.
It is an emachines el 1200

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download Index.dat Suite to clean out all the temp folders. Do not run it yet.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure
that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up).

I have a laptop (a Dell inspiron 1420) and the screen stopped working , and i paid dell 50 bucks for them to tell me that i needed a new screen which would cost too much money to buy, so i brought an acer x203h lcd monitor which worked perfectly for almost 2 weeks. one night, i left my computer , so i guess it went into sleep mode or something, and then the acer screen said no signal.. i tried the Fn key plus F8 key, but it doesn't work when i boot the computer normally. It only works in safe mode with networking. I called acer to see if they could help, but they said the problem was with dell.. i refuse to call dell because my warranty expired. im sad. please help me

Hello, I am new to these forums, and I don't even know if this is the right place, but I didn't find any place for posting crashes that are not BSODs. So if I am on the wrong place, sorry
Anyways, I've seen another thread about a similiar problem here, but I tried everything on it.
Here's everything I tried doing:Clean reboot from Safe Mode
Boot Windows with last good configurations
System Restore (until I found out that my notebook doesn't support that )
System Recovery (I was dumb enough to format the recovery partition for extra space )
Verified Drivers (With verifier.exe, found 1 "bad" driver, removed it, but still didn't work.)
Anti-Virus (found 1 virus, removed it, still nothing.)
Msconfig.exe and disabling servers/startup applications

What I'm yet considering to do:Uninstall the Microsoft C++ Redistributables (But I can't do that since Windows Installer is required and it isn't available on safe mode)
Dust Out notebook fans
Use a Cooling Pad

What happened before it started doing that:
I was going to play a game that needed some C++ Redistributables, so I installed those.
While I was playing, the computer fade out, out of nowhere. That didn't amuse me because every time I "try" to play this game or any resource-intensive games, it does that, to prevent overheating. But that's been happening a lot, even when the notebook isn't hot at all. Most times it would hibernate, but this time it has shut down forced. When I booted my computer, after login, ... Read more

Answer:Computer freezes after Login, only works on Safe Mode

Hey guys, I think I fixed it.
The problem was with the service "Application Virtualization Client"
I disabled it.
of course I know it's not THAT what is causing the error, it's something that this service was trying to read but failed and then made my computer freeze, but I'll leave it disabled until I found out what is it.

Hello Forum,

A few days ago I wanted to boot up my system seeing it randomly crashed the night before as I slept. To my suprise nothing happend after the windows logo was there. I tried re-bootying it a couple of times but nothing helped, so I tried the usual options like system repair, then set it back to a previouse time but nothing seemed to work, except the safe mode. Safe mode worked fine, no problems there, the only problem now being that I dont have any drivers working there. I also used the "dm-log-collector", and the file will be here too, if needed. That's pretty much it.

Thanks you in advance, have a wonderfull day,
Daniel K.

Answer:BLACK-SOD before login into W7 (No coursur, safe mode works)

Probably you have installed Service Pack one after receiving some BSODs a few days ago?

Free up the startup. Windows does not need any other program to auto start with it, but the auto start programs often conflicts and causes various problems including BSODs.
Click on the Start button
Type ?msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
Select the ?Startup? tab.
Deselect all items other than the antivirus.
Apply > OK
Accept then restart.
Do it in Safe Mode, then try to boot back in normal mode. Report us the situation after doing it.

I'm using an Alienware 17 with Windows 10 installed on the SSD and an HDD installed for storage. I was having problems with a key, so I set it to safe mode using msconfig. It booted when I restarted, but when I tried to log back in, it asks for a password instead of a PIN and when I try to use my Microsoft password, it doesn't work. I assume that it needs to verify the password with the Microsoft servers, so I held down Shift and was able to get to the boot options menu. I selected safe mode with networking but nothing seems to be different. I am able to boot to a recovery drive, as well as Ubuntu, but neither of them even recognize the Windows SSD, even though it is still able to boot, just not log in. Is there any way to re-enable access the drive, or is there something else I can do to log in? I have also tried to get an Admin account but you need access to System32 from the C: drive as far as I know.

Answer:Unable to get out of safe mode and no networking.

Welcome to the TenForums

You didn't say this so I will ask. When you booted into safe mode with networking, through boot options, did you re-enter msconfig and remove the safe boot check mark you installed?

Hi all, I found this site by doing google searches on the subject. Great place you have here!
Anyway, while running a scheduled virus scan with McAfee, it would alway freeze toward the end.
I attempted to turn off the wireless radio via the hot keys (fn+F2 on my Dell XPS L702X) during the scan,
but when I can back on, I was getting a limited connectivity (no internet acess) with both my wireless and wired
LAN connection. I booted up in safe mode with networking and I have full internet acces, which is how I am typing right
now. I am having hard time finding the 3rd party software that is blocking my connection. If I boot into Normal Mode
but turn off all services via MSCONFIG, I get no access. It is only when I am in safe mode. Any suggestions? Here is my log file from HiJackThis ran during safemode:

I am helping my office assistant with a problem. She is running XP professional its some form of Dell desktop about four to five years old. She is able to use Outlook and receive and send emails but Internet Explorer8 will not load and neither will Firefox. She has run Avant, Windows Security, I believe Malwarebytes, and some german antivirus program. Nothing comes up. I have reset Internet Explorer and tried to update but cannot get it to load. We have loaded in Safe Mode with Networking and they work fine in that environment. Any help would be great. Thank you.

Answer:IE8 and Firefox will not load but works in Safe Mode w/Networking Internet is on

<<She is able to use Outlook and receive and send emails>>

If you refer to Outlook Express as the email client...bear in mind that it is part of Internet Explorer. If OE works properly, it doesn't make any sense that browsers would be denied Internet access.

The fact that you say it works in safe mode...would force me to disable all browser add-ons as a first step.

i tried a different graphics card, but no joy.so i replaced the hdd drive and put a fresh copy of windows xp pro edtion on,but it loads all the files(i have not pressed f6)i just let it run its course on the disc, then it hangs up on the blue screen again with the words(crit error 0x0000007f)check hardware etc and if this is the first time you have seen it try starting windows again.

Thankyou for all your time.

Answer:Solved: xp safe in safe mode fine...mormal mode blue screen

Start in Safe Mode and look in C:\Windows\Minidump for crash log files with a dmp extension, like Mini071008-01.dmp. Zip 4-5 of the latest ones and post here as a ZIP or RAR attachment. The log file contains information useful to determine what caused the error, most likely hardware.

So, i'm not quite sure what happened but the screen just suddenly turned black midway gaming and I had to force power off the com and when it restarted this happened.
Safe mode however works fine.
I've tried CHKDSK and system restore non seem to work. I have also tried clean boot and doesn't help too.
Anyone knows if this is caused by a malware or an update please reply ASAP tq.

Hey guys. I am just stumped with this one. I was having issues a long while ago, where seemingly randomly, my computer would stall, continuously trying to load Windows Explorer or some other program. If I was watching a movie or using some other program, that program would run just fine until the end, but then would freeze, and become unresponsive. I have had some trouble with my graphics card when it isn't updated to its newest release, however this doesn't seem to be the case now.

I'm not sure if I am having a driver issue, hardware issue or something else. However now, I am not able to boot normally. It will either hang at the Windows starting screen, or most often will load all of my startup programs and the like, appear to be fine for about 15 seconds (I can use some programs, and sometimes navigate with explorer) but then will eventually hang, and say that windows explorer has become unresponsive. Cursor still moves, yet nothing will launch, including system processes, or cancelling any programs.

Here is a grab during safe mode. Hopefully this will shed some light. I am sure that I need a good overhaul of a few things, however do not know where to begin.

Answer:Windows Explorer hangs after login, works in safe mode.

Does it blue screen at all?
Because freezing issues are extremely difficult to solve, I have had personal experiences with them and they are incredibly frustrating. This is because freezing generally doesn't say why Windows crashed. There's little indication as to what caused it. If you don't get any blue screens then I would like you to do in safe mode because you said windows will not boot normally.

You need to set windows to create dump files. Please follow these instructions, also whilst following these instructions you will see a tick box that says "automatically restart" untick that.

Dump Files - Configure Windows to Create on BSOD

Then I recommend you to enable driver verifier which will force a BSOD when it detects a bad driver.
Follow these instructions on how to enable driver verifier.

All of this is being done remotely. (Using Dameware/RDP)

I am trying to reboot a remote system into safe mode, with networking and remote login support. I can get it rebooted to safe mode with networking support. However, then you can not remote into the system.

So basicly, I need to know how you can tell XP to run the RDP service when it boots into safe mode w/ networking support.

Answer:safe mode w/ networking support and remote login access (rdp)

Interesting, I admit this would be very helpful but have never tried it.

- Is Terminal Services service not starting when booting into safe mode?

If not would it be possible to use a remote service manager to start this service once it has booted into safe mode, for instance psservice from the psutilities suite or the mmc services snap in?

Not sure how to describe this one. Suspect Virus has corrupted this pc.

User claims a Virus (Fake) protection program was popping up.
I suspect badly infected as I know the user....

Now...User attemps to log in on networked computer (WinXP Home SP3) and after entering password the screen blanks and the computer reboots.

I'm unable to get to safe mode as the same thing happens when I select the "Administrator" or the User and their password.

Action: so far
1) I removed the Hard Drive from the infected pc and attached as external drive and ran AVG Free 9.0 and Malwarebytes - both found tons of stuff. (Malwarebytes appeared to clean up the Fake anti-spyware - to what extent I'm not sure.
2) Restored drive to original computer and am getting same issues. Unalbe to login or get to safe mode... any of them.

Thinking about running WinXP Repair
Any other suggestions appreciated.

Please help me with this issue with my computer. I got home from school today and tried to use my dell desktop, and it seems to work fine for about 60 seconds and then it just freezes, like caps lock light wont toggle and requires a hard shutdown kind of freeze. It appears to work fine in safe mode. I tried to fix it myself by disabling all the non-Microsoft drivers, but it still freezes in normal mode. The only part in the system that isn't stock is a nvidia graphics card, but it has worked fine for a few months, plus I disabled the nvidia driver in msconfig along with everything else non-Microsoft to no avail. This seems to have come out of nowhere, because it worked fine this morning. I left it on during the day though. Please help me, I've done all I know how to do.

Edit: Forgot to mention one last thing. The Norton 360 subscription ran out today, so I tried to uninstall it, but the computer would always freeze before I could run something for that long. Safe mode doesn't allow uninstalling either.

Answer:Computer freezing a few minutes after boot. Works fine in safe mode + networking

Hello,

Try clean booting the PC and see if we maybe narrow down what is causing the freezing.

How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8

Once we have the freezing issue resolved you can then uninstall Norton using there uninstaller. Norton Uninstaller

Hi Everyone, hope someone can help. I turned on my laptop and realised I cannot connect to the internet at all by wireless or even through the ethernet cable. It shows local connection but is unable to connect to the internet. However, I can do so if I get to safe mode with networking and no other laptops in the house are exhibiting the same issues.

I have ran mcafee virus scan, malwareantibytes and spybot search and destroy and there is no virus, a few malwares which have all been removed. I have also tried running a diagnostic test and my laptop shuts down in the middle of it for no apparent reason. All the network drivers are also up to date and there are no windows updates to be installed either.

Windows firewall is not turned on either.

I'm running Windows Vista 64bit on a Dell Inspiron.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I'm not sure if this is due to a virus but when I received one of those Windows NT server shutdown notice, although I'm not logged into any servers, and from then on, I haven't been able to log back into my system whenever I'm coming back from a password protected power-save screen; it says I have the wrong password but it's definitely correct!

I'm also bombarded with zongo and istbar.

Answer:Unable to login after power safe mode with password enabled.

You do not appear to have an anti-virus application installed on this machine. Let's start off by getting you a free but yet effective antivirus program. Please choose one from any of these 3 programs which are free for home use: AVG Anti-Virus
Avast Home Edition
BitDefender Free Edition v7

After you have installed the antivirus program, have it updated to the latest virus definitions.

Reboot into Safe Mode & perform a full system scan.

Save the logs from that scan & post it here in your next reply along with a new HJT log.

Hi,

I have opened the DHL zip email and my computer is infected. I know there are a number of DHL virus removal threads and have read the Read & Run Me thread to try and run in safe mode to go through the steps but the system won't even allow me to go past the login page. After I trying to enter my password in normal and safe modes, it keeps logging me out automotically and keeps repeating.

Here is what I've done since my computer was infected: I downloaded SuperAntiSpyware, ran a full scan, kept the log and deleted the files found by the scan. The pop ups still came up and computer was still slow so I tried to uninstall and re-install SuperAntiSpyware again. My computer froze and switched it off and back on again and at this point, it won't let me past the login page and keeps logging me out automatically.

I was hoping someone may be able to help me with this.

I'm currently running Windows XP, SP3 (I'm pretty sure). Not sure what other information is required but let me know.

thanks in advance,

NY

Hi,Thanks for the help. I think I've followed all the directions correctly. Here's what happened. Went from zero problems to being unable to access the web. After ruling out an issue with the broadband connection, I opened a command window and pinged google with zero loss.msconfig to selective services - disable all non-microsoft and still no connectivity, disabled all (including Microsoft) and still nothing. Adaware and Spybot can both connect to the internet in normal mode. Neither of my browsers can connect. MS Money can connect. In "safe mode with networking," it connects just fine. Here's what I've done:[indent=1]First - Housecall found " adware_fasterxp " but it seemed to clean it. The second scan, after I left my computer connected all night in safe mode (risky, I know) turned up " worm_nucrp.gen " It seems to be fixed too.Followup scans found nothing.Panda found nothing but tracking cookies.I've run Adaware and Spybot and nothing turnedup but tracking cookies.I've run the WinsockXP fix after removing both TCP/IP and the MS Client for networking and then reinstalling both after reboot. Now, no spyware or malware turns up and the Panda scan is clean as is the Housecall scan. However, no connectivity.I've always used the Microsoft Firewall and Norton AntiVirus, all are on autoupdate.I'm attaching the Hijackthis log that I ran after doing all of the above. After that will follow the panda log.Hijackthis done in normal mode. Thanks,I've spent two n... Read more

Ok, here's the background. My wife's pc (identical to my own, and running on Windows XP)was restarting at shutdown recently on it's own and I saw an error that said there was some kind of driver error. So, I uninstalled the nvidia drivers in hopes of installing the most recent ones. I don't know if this was the issue, but I was troubleshooting and I noticed that there was a recent driver update.

Well now I can't log on at all, because when I get to the windows login screen, the mouse and keyboard won't work. I see for an instance the cursor shows an hourglass, then nothing. I see the blinking cursor in the login field, but I can't type anything in there, and the mouse doesn't work.

So, I tried to do a system restore but it just sent me to the login screen, and no mouse or keyboard function persisted. When I tried to go into safe mode, it asked me what was the boot device I wanted to use (which after some searching I see is also an indicator of a problem, but I'm not sure what it means). I picked my HD and continued to do a restore to the last working config, and the same deal, can't login, no mouse or keyboard use at that sceen.

So, I tried going into safe and it shows both an administrator icon and my wife's user name, and I can't try either because again, the moust and keyboard aren't working here either!

I tried to boot with the windows xp disc in, even picked the boot source from the boot menu as floppy and again as the cd-rom. I read that doing so can sometim... Read more

Hello,I have an HP Pavilion running Windows Vista. The problem I am having is that my screen will only come on in Safe Mode. If I try to start regularly, it gets just to the point where my desktop should open and the screen goes black. I have been trying to self diagnose the problem and I think I may be close, but I can't completely solve it. I am running a NVIDIA Geforce Go 6150 Driver. In reading through some forms I found that this may be a problem so I uninstalled it. After the uninstall my computer opened fine in normal mode and automatically downloaded the driver again. After the driver installs it requires a restart and then will not open in normal mode again. Hi - my first time using a tech forum so sorry for any newbie stuff. Whilst using my PC it crashed, then when I tried to reboot I get the blue screen. Reboot allows safe mode functionality with netwroking. On one reboot I did see a note saying cleaning boot of a file in john/mydownloads/nvVidia/nvidiaZwinky.driver....or somthing like that but still no joy after that in booting. It's not in that file either when I looked. I've got my Hijack log here for anyone who knows better than me to comment on. All thoughts much appreciated. I've attached my dxDiag as well. Since it's started in safe mode some info obviously missing, sorry.

I am experiencing the black screen issues with my new windows 7 lenovo laptop. when it starts normally, I can get to my user logon screen but when I select a profile the computer takes a moment to load through the welcome... part and then just a faint light blue screen with cursor. In normal mode I have a cursor but no button or keyboard functionality whatsoever. I can boot the computer into safe mode with full safe mode functionality.
I have spent literally 3 days working on the issue. I have tried everything I can to this point. Re-installing my graphics driver, disabling it all together and trying a new boot, same result. I've deleted all user accounts and created new ones (as I said this laptop was brand new so I don't have a lot of personal data on it, none anymore) as well as checked my winlogon/ shell to verify explorer.exe. System restore and Boot repair are also not working to help the issue at all. Please I need help, my girlfriend needs to use the laptop for school so I have to get it running quickly and cheaply.

Hi all,
I recently experience a problem with my desktop computer, after working on it throughout the day & shutting down as normal at the end of the day as I returned the following day to continue I was met with a change of font & block like tiles on the login users screen which I thought was bizarre, after logging in I came to a stand still black screen with no options available & no idea why I am experiencing this problem as my computer was fine the following night?
It does not allow me to access task manager to see what processes are currently running.
After restarting & attempting to boot into safe mode it does the exact same thing & I can't get further then the black screen after login.
I'm clueless as to why this is happening as I said my computer was fine 12 hours ago.
Does anyone know what has gone wrong?
How can I fix? Any help would be appreciated.

One day, I rebooted, and then there was nothing. After Windows finished loading, there was naught but a black screen, and a cursor if I move the mouse quickly. This happens in safe mode as well, and on both my dedicated graphics card (an Asus AMD HD 6450 Silent) and my integrated graphics (which I have no idea about, other than it is a Biostar A780L3G). When I try to refresh directly, with a fresh copy of Windows 8.1 installation media, it says it is invalid, despite it being x64, same as the installed version. When I try directly, it says the HDD is locked, and none of the guides I have followed to unlock it through the disk work. Also, I dont know if this matters or not, but when I try booting into safe mode, at first, when I move the mouse, in the corners, it says Safe Mode. Please respond ASAP.

Answer:No login screen when I boot, even in safe mode.

Your on-board card is this one:

ATI Radeon? HD3000 Graphics, On Board Graphic Max. Memory Share Up to 512 MB

I still could not find anything that could explain your problem. Does your MoBo have any kind of HDD protection, similar to HP DriveLock?

My laptop seems to hang after the login screen, the screen either goes completely black or sometimes shows the desktop picture and an empty taskbar, but I am unable to do anything such as task manager. Leaving the system running for 10-15 minutes after trying ctrl-alt-del will bring up some error message, but I forget what it said, I'll try to get it again.

I can get into Safe Mode just fine, and ran the SF Diagnostic Tool from there, I have attached the files it created as requested. The laptop hung on me on shutdown before this issue started and after waiting for 30 minutes for it to try to shut down normally it wasn't responding so I had to power it down. I'm thinking that might've fudged something up but I'm unsure if there were any windows updates queued at the time or not.

I'm really unsure what to do at this point, there aren't any System Restore points, I didn't remember turning it off but I must have at some point.

Answer:Black screen after login, Safe mode OK

I was following the directions I found in another area of this board to get rid of the xlime offeroptimizer problem. I took the following steps:

Enabled hidden files and folders
Turned off system restore

I then went to reboot into safe mode, but instead of using the F8 method, I went to start>run>typed in msconfig> checked "/safeboot"

Now when I try to start my computer, I get the startup screen for safemode. I have always logged on with ctrl/alt/delete and my password. However, now the computer doesn't recognize my password, and I am effectively locked out of my computer all together as I can't get past this screen. Please help!

After running a full system scan of Norton-Anti Virus 2004, I got rid of 505 adware, virus, and stuff but many of the remaining adware had to be deleted manually. So I followed the given Norton Anti Virus instructions to get into Safe Mode in Windows XP home edition... this is exactly what I did.
*note - this is my first time ever going into Safe Mode

I went to Start - Run - typed in "msconfig" then clicked Ok.
I checked the " /SAFEBOOT" option and clicked Ok.
The prompt began and it restarted my computer in Safe Mode once I click Ok.
- Now Here's my problem -

My computer started up in Safe Mode correctly and got to light blue login screen, where you choose one of your accounts - I had 2 accounts to choose from, one called Administrative account and another account with a name I created.

I clicked on the Administrative account and it said " saving settings" then after it finishe nothing happend. no password entry box appeared and so I remained on the light blue Safe Mode login account screen. The same thing happend with my the created account as well. I'm stuck on the login screen on Safe Mode which means even If I turn the computer off and back on I'll still remain stuck at the login screen.

==========Does anyone know a way to fix this problem?

I do know how to get my computer back to its normal mode of restarting but I can't since I'm stuck at the Safe Mode light blue login account screen. However, I don'... Read more

Webroot found 2 trojan horse virus and remove them. Rebooted found more and removed them, then rebooted, to a black screen. 500 Gbyte SSD Scandisk extreme pro.

I can boot into advanced options, but startup options is not available (no safe mode).

Used my rescue disk to enter cmd line and used things like scannow, chkdsk and diskprt to test the disk. Not errors listed.

Used rescue disk to try to reset Windows while saving my data... Get an error about a missing partition, but diskprt shows an 8 Gbyte partition and an approximately 480 Gbyte partition, which contains my installation and data.

Used Windows 10 install disk to reset the os, got a missing partition error.

I used a similar SSD and did a clean install of Windows, to verify that the bios and hardware are ok. Having trouble getting the ASUS Sabertooth x79 audio working. Driver issues.

I ran Anvi Rescue Disk "Scan", it did not find any Threats on the Windows 10 disk.
I then ran "Repair" and it found problems, with everything except Windows Firewall.

I'm tearing my hair out !
(And there's not that much of it.)

I have a set of laptops (used in a school classroom). They connect to the LAN via wireless .. or, at least, they used to.

Specifically: Toshiba SP2100 with D-Link AirPlus G+ wireless PCMCIA cards.

After trying many, many things:

- Boot SP2100 from XP CD (SP2)
- Don't fix any of the driver issues
- Plug wireless card in
- Cancel plug&play
- Install correct driver with d/loaded Setup_v204.exe
- WZC managing wireless connection
- Sees wireless network (WEP) but
- Won't connect automatically (after setup wizard)
- Won't connect manually
BUT ..
- Boot into "safe mode with networking" and wireless works faultlessly

I've got to be missing something really simple.
Please, please can anyone tell me what it is ?

Thanks !

Hello all, my BSOD problems are thankfully a thing of the past now! However, I have a new issue that has been quite confusing to me. When I log in to Windows normally, I'm presented with a black screen and a cursor. Through findings of my own I've found that it's because windows explorer is failing to launch. Upon trying to start it by opening the task manager via CTRL+SHIFT+ESC and opening a new task, I'm presented with an error code that tells me windows explorer failed to launch (I believe the code was something like 00x000002...I'm currently at work and don't remember it exactly off the top of my head). So I attempted to restart in safe mode, and that worked perfectly fine. I ran my virus scanner (Kaspersky Internet Security) and found no threats. I then attempted a system restore, and that failed to complete for an unknown reason. The next time I tried logging in to windows normally, it gave me the black screen again. After some frustration, I gave up on trying to fix it for a while and shut the computer down. After turning it on, however, I was able to open windows explorer manually through the same method I mentioned earlier, and it actually opened this time. I ran the sfc scan through the administrator's privilege command prompt, and was told that there were files that were corrupted but could not be repaired. I don't have a windows CD and am not sure where to go from here. Should I start my computer on safe mode with networking... Read more

Answer:Black screen with cursor, safe mode works

Here is the CBS log I mentioned in the OP. Not sure which information is relevant, but I had to trim most of the document and left just the most recent stuff from the very bottom.

Another note is that upon starting in safe mode, I received a message saying that System Restore did not work, and that an unexpected error occurred while the computer was attempting the restore.

Answer:blank screen on boot up but safe mode works

While booted into the safe mode try looking for any error or warning messages in the Event Viewer, which is in Administrative Tools in your Control Panel. You click either application or system on the left side in Event Viewer, then I do click view, filter, then click to uncheck the box for information, apply and ok, so then only warnings and errors will show on the right. Then just double on one of those to open to see the details of it. Maybe try to run the system file checker tool in safe mode too, click start, run, type in this; sfc /scannow , and include that space before the / too.

Hi there!

I'm here after spending most of yesterday trying to figure this out myself. I should have just come straight here because you guys have ALWAYS fixed my computer problems in the past.

My computer:

Windows Vista Home Premium (6.0, Build 6002) Service Pack 2; HP Pavillion m9100t; Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3 GHz; 2.47 GB Ram; 32-bit OS; NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT; DirectX 10

Problem started when I turned on my pc yesterday morning. I had been walking around doing things and did not notice that it had failed to boot correctly. It was on a repair screen for some time and eventually notified me that it could not repair startup problem. After this I rebooted again and told it not to go to repair but to boot normally. It then went to a blue screen page which of course went by too fast for me to see much. I rebooted, this time in safe mode with networking. I set my computer not to automatically restart and then rebooted again so that I could read the bsod. I wrote down the stop error codes and rebooted to safe mode with networking again. Long story short, I didn't know what the error codes were, but I figured I could search them online. I ran all of my virus and malware scans, got the most recent windows updates (had already been at service pack 2, but there were some other updates) and started surfing the web for solutions. This was done over a period of time since I was also doing other things in the house. I did find that once in every 4 or 5 reboots, it will re... Read more

Hi All!

I have a windows 7 laptop (can't find my original Windows 7 CD's that came with the comp).
I turn the computer on, enter my password, and everything loads up.
But, I can't open anything once I'm there... Not the desktop icons, not the toolbar icons, not even the start menu! Ctl-Alt-Del doesn't work either!
I had some malware that I removed using malware bytes.  After I removed it, these problems started!  Before then the only problems were some lagging and random video ads playing on pages I was visiting.
I also found "MyPCBackUp" program, which I was told was a virus.  I deleted that too.
The only way I can get ANYTHING done is to open in "Safe Mode with Networking."  I can use most of my programs including anti-virus and chrome.
I've been told that a virus may have corrupted the operating system.

PLEASE HELP!
I'm not sure what to do!

Answer:Blue screen on startup, only Safe mode works

Some reasons for Blue Screens
New hardware - software installed.
Device driver - Video driver - corrupted - faulty.
Faulty Ram - Overheating - Dying hard drive etc.
======
Can you get into Safe Mode with Networking?
Check and post
TSG System Information Utility - found here.
http://static.techguy.org/download/SysInfo.exe
======
Post the Minidump files
Create a new folder on the desktop and call it dumpfiles [or something similar]
Look in c:\windows\minidump
Copy the last 4 minidump files to that folder.
Close the folder and right click on it and select Send To Compressed [zipped] Folder.
Windows will compress the file and then save the new zipped file in the same location.
Attach the zip folder by using the 'Upload a File' button.
======
Run a Mem Test.
http://www.memtest.org/
Scroll down to 'Download (Pre-built & ISOs)'
'Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)'

Download the ISO file - then burn the ISO to a Cd.
Start the Pc using the Cd and run the memory test overnight or for at least 8 passes.

It is best to run a full scan on individual Ram sticks if you can.
Or run the test but if any errors are shown - then remove all sticks of Ram - test each Ram stick one at a time and test them in different slots.

======
Run system file checker.
Click Start
Type cmd in search box
Right click cmd.exe to run as administrator.
Type
SFC /SCANNOW
Press Enter

Strangely, my computer booted just fine last night. My sister checked her Hotmail, and chatted on MSN for a short while. I turned it on this afternoon and it hangs at the Windows XP logo screen. The blue bar in the loading box is still moving, but windows never gets any further. Safe mode works OK. AVG scan shows no infection. I restored my Master Boot Record just in case, but it still won't boot.

I have service pack 2.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

There is no malicious software.I have gone through Malwarebytes,TDSSKiller,Kaspersky, etc.Nothing was found.
It doesn't entirely freeze.I can move the cursor which usually is a blue circle.Sometimes more things like highlight icons w/ the cursor or the clock keeps going.
Sometimes when I press ctrl+alt+del and open task manager, the programs that didn't open when I clicked on them will open up.Most times pressing ctrl+alt+del does nothing though.
It works fine in Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Networking.I have disabled all start ups and every service except Microsoft ones and restarted in Normal mode.Still the same problem.
I used checkdisk and it said nothing is wrong.
There are random times where it works fine.No specific time of day.It just happens. Most times it is this way though.

Answer:Laptop only works in safe mode.Hangs w/ blue circle in Normal mode.

Did you disable the startup items and services in Safe Mode, and then restart in normal mode?

Essentially what you are trying to do is a Clean Boot, this has to be performed in normal mode.

***This is a diagnotic tool for Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8.  This will not repair your computer, but it may point to where the problem lies so that a repair can be made.***

Warning:  Disabling items in Services or Startup may leave your anitivius disabled until the process is ended.  For this reason I would suggest that you perform this process off line.

Step 1

(1)  Click on the Start orb , then type msconfig.exe in the Search programs and files box.

(2)  When msconfig is seen in the pane above the search box and under Programs, right click on it, then click on Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, you should enter the password or provide confirmation.

Step 2

(1)  Click on the General tab.

(2)  Click the Selective startup option.

(3)  Remove the check mark in the Load startup items  check box.

Step 3

(1)  Click on the Services tab.

(2)  Place a check mark in the Hide all Microsoft services check box, this will remove the Microsoft Services from the list but will still be running.
