Speedtest fine, browsing speed not so fine.

Question: Speedtest fine, browsing speed not so fine.

Ok, We just updated our modem from a Motorola SBG900 to a SBG6580.

Speedtests are substantially better.

We have 2 laptops, 2 desktops, 2 Xboxs, and a PS3 all running on the network. All of them are running amazing...except for (of course) my desktop.

I can run speedtest on my desktop and get around 12Mb, but when I try to browse the internet, websites take stoopid long to load and sometimes won't even load. But to make things even more strange, when I stream a video from youtube or something, it will take years for the video to start streaming, but once it does, it flies.

Talked to Motorola and all they could say, is if you have an internet connection, its fine.

No settings were changed at all from the time we turned off the old modem to the time we activated the new one.

Virus scan checks out. Tried on both Wireless and Wired. All drivers updated. Was about to format my computer but I lost my damn Win7 install disc. >< Please Save Me.

Preferred Solution: Speedtest fine, browsing speed not so fine.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I know this is a common problem with a simple answer, but I forgot what the answer was.

Okay, so I'm browsing normally, no problems with anything taking too long to load. But then as soon as someone else jacks into the router, I get problems with loading things.

Now I forgot, which of these things is usually used to solve that? A better router? Faster internet service? Both? Something else?

Also, which of these things would help me with computers that don't get very good browsing speed while connecting wirelessly?

Answer:Browsing speed is fine, until someone else plugs into the router.

The reason your connectiion appears to slow down is that your ISP provides a certain amount of bandwidth to your connection and this is divided among all the computers connected to it.

So you have, say, a 5Mbs connection, then one computer gets the whole 5Mbs to itself, 5 computers it's 1Mbps per computer. It's not quite as simple as that, it depends a lot on what the various users are doing, but that basically is what is happening.

Unless you have a very fast internet connection, the limiting factor is the speed of your internet connection to your ISP.

Connecting by wireless, as opposed to ethernet, is almost always slower, although the reduction may be very small. It depends on a lot of factors which include : distance from the router; structural materials between the computer and the router; alignment and positiioning of the various aerials.

For computers with reduced browsing speed using wi-fi, probably the biggest difference you can make is to play around with the aerial position. As an example, I use a USB dongle on my desktop which is mounted using a magnetic clip and a short extension cable at the very front top of the right hand side. if the mounting clip slips down by as little as half an inch ( 1.25 cm ) I lose about 25% of my signal !

I recently wiped and reinstalled XP and found browsing the internet has become painfully slow, 6-10Kbs when downloading a file but when I'm using Bittorrent I get speeds of 200Kb+ which is what I had before when browsing.

I have checked the settings and all seem as they were before the reinstall and have used both Firefox and IE but they both suffer from the same problem. I've reset the router, reinstalled the wireless USB adapter and cleared internet caches.

I have posted in the "Malware Removal & HijackThis Logs" forum but have found nothing wrong.

I have a netgear router and wireless USB adapter and am running XP Pro (sp2).

Thank you for your help.

Hi,
Recently I upgraded from Windows Vista home basic 32 bit to Windows 7 professional 32 bit.

Now however, my browsing speed is very slow and often doesnt work. It seems to especially have trouble with google related stuff (eg Gmail and google maps etc).
However when I finally get a page up, download speed for files are completely normal. Im currently using firefox 4, but I have already tried Chrome and Internet Explorer with no difference between the 3. Ive tried disabling/uninstalling firefox addons, Ive also tried with and with out an active firewall, and turning off my anti virus software. Ive also scanned my computer with my anti virus (Sophos) as well as Spybot Search and Destroy. None of this has helped either.

All other computers in my house hold are all browsing the net fine, including my laptop also using windows 7.

I have really run out of ideas, as my computer was browsing the net fine before upgrading.

Sorry if I have posted this in the wrong place or this has been resolved elsewhere, I am a neewbie to forums, and I couldnt see a similar thread.

Cheers

Answer:Upgrade causing slow browsing, fine internet speed

Are you using the latest network drivers? Also, things like java and flash player and any other plugins you use need to be installed with a new install.

Try changing DNS servers to opendns or google.

Hello - recently web browsing using Firefox (v29.0) has become very slow/choppy/laggy.

I've performed speed tests with my ISP and I am consitently at 10mpbs down and 3mps up, which are the expected rates.

This appears to be specifically an issue with web browsing with Firefox.

I used Avast 2014 (free) as my antivirus and all weekly scans find no viruses.  I've also scanne my computer using Malwarebytes (lates version) and nothing has been found.

I'm a bit puzzle by this as not much has changed on this computer in the past few months.  I'm not sure if this could be a virus/spyware/malware issue or just poor firefox performance more recent revisions of the browser.

Any help that can be provided would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I have a new Dell Inspiron 5110. I have a number of wireless computers and all the others, iPad, smart phone, etc, are having no problem. I tested the internet connection speed and it is faster to this computer than to the others, probably due to the N Adapter on a Dlink N Router. The others are all G cards. However, one of four things happens with Firefox, Chrome, IE and Opera.
The browser cannot find the server.
The browser times out many times before finding the servers
Sometimes it does find the server and the site, no consistency in the behavior.
When it does find the site, it is usually painfully slow.
I have tried everything I can think of. It usually does come up in Safe mode with Networking.
I set the DNS option to the Google DNS servers and for a while that helped.
I have flushed the cache and winsocket with command line prompts.
I have turned off the firewall.
I tried disabling the v6 tcp/ip option in the adapter properties.
None of this has made any difference.
90% of my work is researching on the internet which makes this computer useless to me.
I have run PC Cleaner, done thorough scans of my computer, etc. There was one virus that appered in the MSFT Essentials scan but it deleted it.
Sometimes one browser will not work at all whereas another will work minimally.
I see others complaining of this problem, but the threads do not seem to carry through for a solution.

A new wrinkle is that I now see 3 wireless connections reported, two are through the miniports ... Read more

I've been dealing with this issue for about a month now and can't figure out what is wrong. I've never had any problems with my internet speed in the past and speedtest.net is saying the speed is 2.7mbps which is what my speed has always been but I can't watch youtube videos or anything now without waiting for them to buffer for minutes at a time. And this is where I get confused: when I'm streaming a video the speed seems to max out at 100 KBps and usually sits around 50. But, if I download a torrent it gets up to the full speed and downloads no problem. And this problem is on every computer in the house...we have laptops and cellphones/ipods using the wireless connection plus a desktop using a wired connection and everyone has the same issues. I've tried searching for a fix for this but nothing has worked so far. Does anyone have any ideas?

hey guys
so i finally decided to install win7 x86 - everything went well - put all the standard stuff on there etc - i rebooted many times because of installations and updates
on my last reboot it just got stock in the bios screen (verifying dmi pool data..success! etc)
so i rebooted, same thing, took the disc out, same thing - turned off boot devices same thing
tried to use window's useless repair tools (whatever happened to repair install?) which didn't help - so i decided to format and reinstall - then it says it was unable to do that (partition error or something)

the annoying this is...is that this EXACT..i mean EXACT same thing happened when i installed vista sp1 from scratch - this happened - and to fix it i had to leave my pc open overnight with the hard drive cables all unplugged..in the morning with my fingers crossed i tried the installation again - and it worked.

my d: always disappears (single hard disk sata 233gig (250)) - sometimes it'll vanish from my computer and stuff - but this can't be the problem because the d: is a single drive on its own - my c: is a25gig partition from my e: - so it's completely unrelated.

does it matter how i replug the sata cables (2 of them) into the mother board? - they're both being recognised anyway

this is really annoying though - mostly because there isn't really an explanation - and because this random stuff always happens to my pc! - is it my hard drive because that's the only thing that would half- make sense :-/

now ... Read more

Answer:installs fine, runs fine, reboots..not fine

Did you delete/recreate the partition? If you haven't then do this first and try re-installing Win 7. I wouldn't recommend removing the watermark as that can have unpredictable results.

Greetings gurus. Internet trouble. As the title says, my mail will not load in any browser. Page load is very slow and most things time out at least once. AT&T ran line tests on DSL and everything was clean. Not sure how this could be. Speedtest was run many times and no probs. I even did some gaming which strains everything with no problems. I'm open to the possibility of a virus. Ran Avira and MBAM but haven't gone further. Strangely the wife's Facebook games are a no-go. Also, wireless devices work fine. Heeeeelp!

I have searched for this problem and can't find it anywhere. Every few minutes my IBM Access Connections keeps shutting down, then restarting all by itself. I usually don't have to do anything to restart it, but once in a while it takes too long to restart, so I reconnect manually. I don't know if it makes any difference, but it didn't happen until I downloaded Google Chrome. I've installed Service Pack 3, but no change. And while I'm at it, my laptop will no longer restart when I click "restart". It just powers off. Hi, I am having a mojor headache with a Toshiba Satellite Pro A120. The screen has started switching to blackout at random times and is happening more and more. It doesn't matter whether W
Jayindows has loaded or if I enter the bios,or boot from CD,or leave it sat waiting for me to select a boot device. It more often than not goes black but you can still see what should be on the screen, it's just not lit at all to see clearly. The laptop itself is still working fine as it works on an external monitor and makes system beeps, cd spins up etc.
Have tried the following:
Adjusting various settings in the graphics properties and within the bios but makes no difference.
It also switches back on if I press FN + F5 to swap monitors but goes off again after a few seconds.
It's not overheating as it's been stood all night and still happens sometime during boot when stone cold.
I've tried booting with / without the battery - no difference.
I've tried booting without the HDD - no difference.
I've tried removing the battery, pressing power for 60 seconds, then add battery, power and boot up again - no difference.
I would have sworn it was the inverter but it does the same thing with an inverter I know works! don't think it can be graphics as it works on an external monitor and doesn't go off.
I'm out of ideas and seeking a genius to sort this for me please!!!
Cheers

I recently purchased a new laptop from PC World which has Windows 8 on (recently upgraded myself to 8.1) and was set up in store by their 'Knowhow' team.
My laptop connects to the router fine (this is confirmed as I can access the laptop on other devices such as my old laptop or my smart TV) however there is either no internet access, or I have access for 2-3 minutes and then no further access.
If I connect to the router via an ethernet cable there are no issues at all and I have connected to my university wireless routers and routers at a friends house with no issues.
There are no issues when accessing the internet through the wireless with the other devices in my home so I'm assuming the issue lies with the wireless link between my laptop and router however after searching forums for this type of issue I haven't been able to fix the issue. I have already tried a few things however I'm happy to do these again and post the results if needed to cross fixes off the list.
If it helps, my laptop is a Samsung 5 series NP540U3C-AO2UK and the router is NetGear, provided by Virgin Media who also provide our internet.
Thanks in advance!

Have major graphics display issues with Firefox & IE! Chrome is the only browser I can view web pages & buttons, icons, stationary etc. perfectly. All browsers have been updated. I can hardly use Firefox or IE.
I prefer firefox but the buttons, email stationary icon links & other web page graphics are invisible. My email stationary tools are invisible. When I mouse over the graphic links (icons) I see the ALT tags & the links do work even though invisible!

For example, the font color chart shows no colors, only black outlined boxes, like a grid with no colors to select. Can't see any the Emoticons, Bold, no tools what so ever.
The graphics are lacking. Very bare bones.
A picture can explain it best.
The Chrome browser is the only browser I can use without any issues.

I took out my Nvidea graphics card a year ago when it went bad & am using my
inbuilt SiS graphics. I've tried everything with no success.
I'm wanting to check my webpage & landing pages in different browsers but I can't until I can resolve this.

Appreciate any help in this matter!!!

This is my first post here, so please bear with me... I was originally going to post this in the "malware" forum, but I am not convinced that linked to anything malicious and wanted to get peoples thoughts first.

I have 2-3MB/S DSL and a desktop PC connected to the router with a cable. Its running XP and in general its fine. Its stable.. Everything works and my downloads are in the 200MBytes/S region... But for some time (and it could be as long as a year), I have found Web Browsing to be slow...

The reason its been so long is that since buying a Laptop and iPad, I rarely use the desktop for browsing and never thought anything of why it was slow... My Laptop/iPad connects wirelessly and they fly. Web browsing is instant and I never really considered that there was anything wrong.

But in the last few days I have finally realised that something is wrong my with Desktop.. Very wrong.. Web browsing is so slow, its unusable..

Every page you visit, pauses at the "connecting with www....." and "waiting for www......" before finally loading. Even connecting to the routers own address (192.168.0.1) is slow. If I am honest, I always thought that this was a Network or Router problem, even though my wireless devices performed flawlessly. However, I have connected my laptop to the same port on the router, so that its now cabled (rather than wireless) and it works fine, so I know that its not a router/network fault and must be something on the PC...

Hey,

I've been doing some online gaming (world of warcraft), and I kept getting these Error#131 issues. This would cause the game files to become corrupted and then I would have to repair, or reinstall. The WoW tech site says that chronic error #131 messages are either a Hard drive, Ram, or Motherboard issue.

Running the Windows Vista memory diagnostic tool has turned up some odd results, the initial test with a 1gb stick in slot #1 and a 1gb stick in slot #2 came back with errors. I then removed the ram from slot 2 and ran the test on slot 1 with 1 stick of ram.... no errors. I did the same with the other stick in slot 1.....no errors. this lead me to believe that it was slot#2 giving me the issue so I moved the ram from slot 2 to slot 3, thus having 1gb of ram in slot 1 and 1gb of ram in slot 3. After a little while......error#131 appeared.

So I then tested both sticks in slots 1 and 3 together and came back with ram errors, I then tested both sticks in slot #1, and then again in slot #2 and both tests came back fine. Any ideas on what this issue could be? I know both sticks are the same brand, speed, totally identical.

Answer:Ram Works fine in single sticks, not working fine together :P

Define "browsing", I assume you mean in your browser? Which browser are you using? Are you using wireless? Which model of router? How old is your computer? You can also see if maybe updating your network adapter would help.

HI all,

sorry to dive straight in with a question but my Internet explorer and firefox are both so slow and twitchy I don't have time to read any other similar posts as I don't know how long my computer has left to live as it's only a matter of time before it's either consumed by whatever virus is affetcting it or I throw the damn thing out of the window.

We use windows XP and I.E.8.

Honesty first, we download / steal a hell of a lot of films, music, episodes of southpark, simpsons etc and have no virus protection...............I know we're asking for trouble but surely there's a kind christian soul out there who can forgive us and help us get back to full speed browsing?

I've downloaded combofix and malwarebytes which helped for a while and regularly found and removed many dodgy things, problem is that our internet explorer and firefox are so slow that I thought we needed some more serious help so I uninstalled them to avoid any conflicts and downloaded Spybot search and destroy. That found a load of stuff but was too weighty and intrusive and slowed things down even more so then went the way of the recycle bin too.

The main problems are the browsing speed has gone from pretty fast two days ago (which we were happy with) to mega slow, slower than dial up speed!!!
Firefox often says 'timed out' and internet Explorer says 'page cannot be displayed - click to diagnose connection problems' I click and of course it says that it can't diagnose anything??? I als... Read more

You may have a extra large host file if you used Spybot S&DLook for a file called HOSTS in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETCOpen it in notepad and if there are a LOT of lines in there, you can delete all the contents in the file, but keep the file. Then you can use the MVPS HOSTS file, from http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm. That may or may not help.

Hello everyone,

I began experiencing a problem Friday evening, February 27 with my internet browser. My default browser is Firefox, and I have a wired dsl connection, operating system is Windows XP, SP3. On Friday, my browser suddenly slowed to a crawl, to sub-dialup speeds. I tried logging on with IE and the same problem occurred. I have contacted my dsl provider and the line speed has no problems. In fact, I can access email through Outlook, and Itunes and my antivirus program's download speed is unaffected. I am able to browse the web through Outlook without any loss of speed.

I have tried removing and reinstalling Firefox without success. I have done a complete system scan with AVG anti-virus, and have also done the same with Iolo anti-virus (after removing AVG). Of course, I have emptied the cache and cookies, without any help.

I suspect a virus. I note also that Windows system restore appears to have been disabled, preventing me from restoring my computer to a functioning state. From previous experience, I know this is a common trick employed by viruses to prevent a quick fix.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Peace and blessings,

Frank

Answer:Web browsing is slow with IE or Firefox, dsl and email are fine

Well, It sounds like to me it might be a Virus. However, I'd try downloading another Browser just to see. Try either Safari or Opera. Install them, and take a run. If they also show sluggishness, then we can be assured it has a possibility of a Virus. We can deal with that after we run a "diagnostic".

Post your performance after you get it done.

Hi,

Problem 1:

I am on a 256KBps broadband line.
Recently I can download using Orbit Downloader at 14-19KBps, but browsing seems to be really slow.

I tried Opera and Chrome and both are slow to display pages of all kinds from simple text pages to facebook and flash pages.
And I shutdown all other programs including Orbit that is downloading, before trying to test browsing speed.

I deleted browsing data, cache, cookies etc from Chrome and Opera and restarted several times, and the surfing speed did not increase.

How do I fix it?

Problem 2:

I live in Bangladesh, and my ISP has a real bad connection. I am on the 256KBps line.
They say the problem is with my computer, though I dont think so.

Most speed tests are geared towards high speed (>1MBps lines) and require access to a server to calculate results, like SpeedTest.net. They are not suitable for continuously monitoring all the fluctations of a very slow connection. I need a desktop gadget that shows a graph or constant meter for my internet speed.

Does anyone know of a free desktop speed test?

Help :>

My browser connection speed dropped to about 2kb/second after a power outage.

I just did a full format of the drive and a clean install of XP Pro.

No Antivirus or Firewall loaded yet.

XP Firewall is not enabled.

Hi guys. I hope you can help on this issue I've been having with my internet connection, I don't know what to do...

I resently formatted my harddrive because my internet all of a sudden started being very slow but after the format it's still the same issue. Now I've tried plugging the connection line into my laptop and there there's no problem.

I am gettin' a slower download than upload...

I have a 10mb download/1 upload speed LAN connection. I ran a speed test on the same connection and on my stationary it shows like 250 kbs download and like 750 kbs upload, while on my laptop it shows like 8 Mbs download and 750 kbs upload... so what's the problem?

So far I've found out that it has nothing to do with the internet connection line or my NIC (I tried a brand new one and it was the same issue), it's not spyware or malware, it's not fragmented and under internet connections it says that I'm connected on a 100 Mb network card and there are no problems with any of the devices?

However I can see that if I open the job list, the download connection is very unstable going from up to 750 kb for a breif moment then falls to a halt at 0 kb... and moreover it says that I'm not using any percent of the network?

I'm on windows 7 and haven't had any problems before this, the rest of the system works just fine, but not the internet. If I try and download something it won't get higher than like 50 kb and then may... Read more

All of a sudden while browsing, I get insanely slow loading times, with multiple timeouts. I go on speedtest and this is my speed. I get random latency spikes during video games. I could barely upload the picture of my speedtest results, and I'll be surprised if this thread even makes it. What is happening? How can I fix it? Thanks

I've tried disabling all startup programs and rebooted, nothing
Restarted router, nothing

Reboot and check your speed again.

How can you have a Custom Build and not know what motherboard you have.

Recently my desktop has experienced very slow download speeds (~0.11 Mbps), however the upload speed appears to be in line (~2.0Mbps). These numbers are taken from Comcast's speed test (my ISP). It is obviously a problem with my PC because everything else on the network (PS3, Laptop) have great signals with no problems. I just recently reverted the Desktop back to its factory state, and everything was working fine for a couple of months.

The desktop in question uses Vista 32-bit and the Belkin Basic USB Wireless Adapter.

Answer:Very slow download speed, upload speed is fine

Welcome to TSG:
Run a speedtest here and see if the results are the same:
http://www.speedtest.net/
Then, boot up in safe mode with networking and see if the speed improves.Like so:

Hi everyone,
At first I noticed a slow down with my ISP (Verizon FIOS) from 15mb/s to 6-7mb/s, but the upload speed is unaffected. So, I called my ISP they told me could be an issue with the Windows that I am using.
Then I called MS regarding the network issue, however they told me that my license has expired is not under warranty for technical support. Here I am asking for some help.

Some of the thing that the ISP done was conducting some test:
Buffer size:261360 bytes
Receive size: 66608 bytes
Their ISP network technician told me that the Receive size was too low and causing problem to the download speed, but the upload speed is still good.

So, anyone who have any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Download speed is limited, but upload speed is fine

are you using a router?
if yes, try bypassing the routing by plugging directly into the modem.

Hi All

I'm hoping someone might be able to help me.  My friend gave me her laptop to look at (i've a little bit more knowledge than her) as last week her internet was really slow.  When i run a speed test on it i the the following Ping 23ms, download 37.91 mbps & upload 24.64mbps.  These are all over wifi, so there is no problem from that end.  My laptop is running fine and the internet is not slow at all.
The laptop has windows 10 (but just from today as 8 was driving me mad).

I've ran Malwarebytes Anti Malware on  and that isn't coming up with an problems.  I also tried changing the DNS to the following 208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220 but it didn't make a difference.  I'm kinda stuck as to what else to do.

Thanks for any help you can give me
Lindsay

Answer:Internet Browsing slow but everything is fine when i run a seed test

As you changed the DNS make sure you have flushed the dns resolver cache ipconfig /flushdns.
Have you tried clearing the browser history?
If your using another browser other than Edge disable any extensions/plugins and see if it improves.
Anti-virus web filters/protection can occasionally cause these symptoms what are you using for protection?
Also from past experience with others may be a good idea to check TaskManager while your browser is open to see if resources are being used properly CPU is not at 100% and MEM is not maxed out either.

I've searched thru the forums and didn't see anything about this issue.

I'm trying to fix my brother's computer.

He can browse the internet just fine, web page after web page. but he is not able to download anything OR operate any instant messaging programs. Programs like anti-virus updates aren't working either.

Any suggestions or a point in the right direction would be most helpful.

I was able to update his AVG antivirus program manually using a USB stick. I did spyware/adware sweeps using a couple of programs, but some with limited definitions (due to the download issue).

He has cable broadband and so do I. This issue is occuring on both of our networks, as I have his computer at my house right now.

He has XP home, IE, Dell etc...

Thanks for any assistance that can be provided.

I have a Tenda W311R Router, a windows 7 box, two xp box, wii, and xbox 360.

What is happening lately is web browsing is painfully slow. All computers are effected(affected?). My pings are great 40ms to google but searches take forever. I am able to download at my connections max speed (1700 kb/s). Starcraft 2 plays fine no issue, wii works fine playing mario cart.

What i get in web browsing is long delays when it says "waiting for google.com" "transfering data from hardforum.com". It just over 1 minute for it to load my gmail inbox.

Things i have tried... reseting the cable modem, resetting the router. Changing DNS servers (googles, scrubit, 4.4.2.2 all tried). Confirming slowness happens on multiple computer. It is rather frustrating but i can not figure it out. I did recently need to replace a router since my old roomate left with our netgear one. This Tenda one seamed to work great for a few weeks with no issues. It is defiantly a budget chinese router as there is lots of engrish spelling errors in the setup web page. No computer is running torrents or anything that would use up all the uplink bandwidth.

I have noticed in the past week some slow browsing at times but it was never that bad and intermittent. Last night and all today it has been really slow.

Any ideas on what to check? I could hook the cable modem directly into one of the computers but i really do not want to dig up cat5 or rg6 out of the walls or find a way ... Read more

I have 1 machine in our entire domain that seems to be having extremely slow browsing times when accessing our file server. However this only occurs when using UNC shares or his network places icon.

If I goto our application server shares, normal fast browsing. If I goto the same location as the UNC share however through a mapped drive, normal fast browsing.

I have looked all through google and found registry fixes here and there, none of which made any difference. I am at a loss as to what could be causing this. Whats really confusing me is its only with our file server and nothing else. And only with UNC shares/Network places, not mapped drives.

Anyone ever run into this odd behavior before?

I turned off my Anti Virus, NOD32, stopped bit torrent. I did the TCPsys max connections patch for Windows XP SP2. I even tweaked http network max pipes and connection settings to double the default values in about:config. I'm running off a cable connection. NONE of this is helping.

Ok, so tabbed browsing has really killed my firefox, not bandwidth connection wise though. Its like stalling something as a process. First I'll open firefox, load 10 tabs, they load fine. Close all tabs, reload the tabs again, and now firefox is acting all laggy, it loads things slow as hell. If I open IE, it loads a page fine. Firefox will act all slow to load pages for 10 minutes before it starts to pick up again. WHAT THE HELL firefox??? Anyone else get this after loading tabs?

Answer:Firefox 3 tabbed browsing slows up everything, but IE loads fine??

Yeah I noticed this too.

At first I thought it was hd defrag (haven't done that for months). Defragged, still get random pauses/stops in FF. E.g. get up from PC, I logoff and do whatever. Let torrent and other processes, run for a few hours. Come back, try to open FF. All the tabs seem as if they've been individually "trim on minimize". HD is crunching like hell, FF almost hard locks - it's a bit ridiculous.

You know - at first I enabled this with FF2. But after a while, i realized I'd rather have a gaping memory hole, then to hear my HD crunch as it loads from the slower page file. So I turned it off in FF2.

I have a feeling this goes back to their "solution" to the memory leak problem. Sigh...

*oh one last thing. I got my VERY first hard lock, since the dark days of using Via chipsets in 2001 - why? Firefox 3. Checking my eventvwr after restart, it showed FF hung for no reason and brought down my entire system. That's ridiculous.

The bloat of FF3 is actually re-opening the browser race for me. I'm actually considering Opera again.

Linksys PCI G Wireless Adapter has stopped working after a semester at college. The network was wired there, so my desktop was plugged into it for 3 months, but the adapter itself was safe.
It worked before I left for college, and I just got back, set everything up again, and it is detected in device manager, I enabled, disabled, reinstalled drivers after removing the old ones, and tried installing and uninstalling it.

When at college, because this is a Vista machine, I had to update my drivers that manage my wired connection, because they were not working when I first got to college. I was wondering if this may be the cause of the problem.

Briefly, I've been using my monitor instead of the laptop screen for over a year now. Everything works fine. Suddenly yesterday the monitor went black! It's actually still functioning on some level but doesn't keep the display. I was doing something on the internet, possibly saving a password in RoboForm, maybe just wandering. There are no error codes or indicators.

'Longly'....
When I reboot, having previously changed the setting to dual - laptop & monitor, it briefly flashes the Vaio splash screen, then black, then briefly flashes the Windows splash screen. Then black. The laptop screen is fine. I've tried both 'Single Display - Monitor' and 'dual display' - Laptop as Primary; 'dual display' - Monitor as Primary, and in none does the monitor work - laptop screen always works.

If I unplug the VGA output from the laptop, then plug it back in, the monitor briefly (maybe 1-2 seconds) shows the desktop images perfectly! Then black! It seems that everything is actually working just not properly! It's making me crazy. I did try downloading the most current graphics driver from Intel...nothing. The monitor continues to show a green light (indicating that it is receiving a signal). The audio (plugged from the monitor into the front of the laptop by a separate plug) continues to play thru the monitor.

To Recap: Display on 'Monitor only' has worked just fine for a year. Now it won't show any image... Read more

Hey all,

I had an annoying virus the other day, and ended up removing it with MalawareByte in safe mode. But all of a sudden I noticed when I tried to connect to the iTunes store it instantly gave me an error saying "connection timed out, Check network settings", yet my internet (wired) works fine browsing with firefox etc. Then I noticed when I launched Steam it wouldn't display anything on the Steam store except a white screen that says "Navigation to this store was canceled". Same thing happened with every application I tried that uses the internet for updates etc. I even tried Windows update, and I go the same thing.

Like I said- The internet itself works fine, Browsing and downloading have no Issue.

I'm running Vista 64bit, current updates installed as of a week or so ago. Other computers on my network don't have the problem, so it must be something with this machine.

I don't have any antivirus software running, and Windows firewall/security center is completely turned off.

It's probably something simple, but I've messed with every network setting I can think of to no avail. I haven't found an answer to this specific problem anywhere, but people with similar problems seemed to have luck with putting their Vista disc in and doing a repair. My copy of Vista is completely genuine, but it may take me all weekend to hunt for my disc.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks!

Setup DMZ for the affected computer Routers contain firewalls and other network technology that may be causing this problem, but most also have support for a "Demilitarized Zone" (DMZ) computer which is not put behind the firewall. This is a convenient way to test the router, and users should first find what IP address is being given to their computer, and then set that IP address as the DMZ computer. If iTunes connectivity works, then the problem is clearly with the firewall settings in the router.

Ensure ports 80 and 443 are open The router should have internet ports 80 (http) and 443 (https) open by default, but it is possible some setting has changed to restrict these ports in some situations, possibly by them being reserved for a specific IP address on the network through port forwarding. These settings can be automatically set in some cases, so users should check and remove any port forwarding or port triggering settings that might include these numbers.

Disable Firewalls Routers usually contain some sort of firewall which is enabled by default. As a test, users might try disabling the various firewalls that are on the router. These might include NAT, SPI, or content filters, in addition to "true" firewalls which block specific ports and services. If any options to disable firewalls are available in the router's settings, users are encouraged to try turning them off.

Guys, is there any way I can help speed up my browsing on the internet? I know some sites are slower than others but, as of late, the internet seems to slow down to a crawl yet, when I do the speed test, I end up scoring higher or just where I am supposed to be at.

I only use Avast as my A.V. & Spyware + Windows Firewall, no proxies. I am also using OpenDNS for my dns address and this has help a bit but still, I will like more from it since when I download a file, it does it fairly quick.

Any ideas?

Answer:Extremely slow Internet browsing... Download speeds are fine

If we assume you are not hit by evil infection, then it might be relevant that an older post of yours show you have router with firmware not updated since long. Wireless Routers - Linksys Community Forums try search for it here. Lots of problems like this v4.21.1 of Linksys WRT54G Firmware is Bad - Wireless Routers - Linksys Community Forums though you can say the same for many routers.

So why dont you update to Tomato firmware? If it qualifies, Tomato FAQ | polarcloud.com

That way you can let router handle dynamic IP update (Basic, DDNS) and also get a little boost by increasing build in cache. Advanced, DHCP/DNS can be set up like in the pic. In older post I lost url to did you say Opendns ips changed? They should not. Only 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 are allowed I think, see pic for how it looks in Tomato.

Read up on Tomato site, there should not be a risk by "flashing" - can go back. Also dont wonder where firewall went - it is not possible to turn it off

If browsers are hosed by infection good luck Opendns can have problems in certain areas but should be temporarily. Infection is more likely than opendns messing up if set up correctly.

It's definitely a dns settings somewhere. It could be in your network settings itself or IE could be set (causing the system too) to use a proxy server. Check that it is not. If you need help doing that, let us know.

If you have mdnsresponder.exe in the task manager, you have the Bonjour service installed. In this case, also let us know.

I personally disable the dns client. If you'd like to do the same, type services.msc in the start menu and hit enter. You can do so here.

If you don't disable the service, then run this instead at an elevated command prompt:

Code:
ipconfig /flushdns
If it still doesn't work out and you don't have the things mentioned, Google on how to set a static ip address and use a free dns server while doing so, from OpenDns website.

how do i fix this?

my friend suggested changing the network card.
if that is the solution to this mess, how do i take out the network card out of the harddrive from the motherboard. i'm using a dell computer but the motherboard came with the drive, so i'm afraid that it's impossible to open up the computer overall or without damaging the computer itself.

Hi All,

I have just upgraded to Win 7 Ultimate x64, I had no problems installing Win 7 (fresh Install) The computer is a I5 2500k, Asus P8P67 m/b, GTX 560ti GPU, 8g ram, OCZ 120gb ssd, I haven't connected the 2 tb storage just yet, Not sure if you need that info or not.

The Problems seems to be that the Browsers are very slow or may not even load a page. I loaded Utorrent to see if the connection was dropping in and out but while downloading it stays at a steady rate. Which would rule out the Connection to the internet I would assume.

1. I have turned of anti virus still the same.
2, I have turned of firewall and still the same
3. shot myself and it still the same
4. turned of Microsoft Security Essentials still the same
5. Also done a fresh install of windows just to make sure
6. Was connected to a server, but i have bypassed that, Now connected straight to the modem/router.

My Dad is waiting for me to set his new machine up so he can continue playing online games so we would be both grateful for any help. Im going crazy at the moment cause it has to be something simple that I'm over looking.

It started today(that I know of) my speed is 600kbps but my ping is in the 350-550 range. I ran a virus scan and adaware nothing. Could this be my ISP? Or something else?

i have been on the phone with the internet company and they have reset everything from their end.
My modem is getting 24.98 Mbps. i am connected through a 1ft Ethernet cable. My ethernet status speed is 1.0Gbps. running a speed.net test results in 16ms ping, 1.47Mbps download speed and 4.34Mbps upload speed.
I have run a malewarebytes and an avast scan both premium and resulted clean. my speed & duplex is set to auto which is 1.0Gbps full. I have no idea why i am getting such low speeds, iv done the obvious restarts and resets, only appliance in the house connected.

Answer:Slow download speed but modem is fine.

Got 50/10 internet today but when I run speedtest with my desktop PC results are following:

I only get about 0.6 Mbps upload with this device but with my laptop (connected it to same cable than my PC) and with my phone (wifi) I get stable 10 Mbps.

I'm using Windows firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials (same with my laptop). Also tried closing firewall but that didn't make any difference.

Answer:Slow upload speed with 1 PC, others work fine

Well I got it sorted out, it seems that Net Limiter 3 does limit speeds even while it is not running :P

I am also using the same connection with another machine and have no issues at all. So It would be the Win 7 64 machine that has an issue. I use the same CAT 5 and just pull it out of one and put it in the other.

Answer:Browsers Slow, Torrent speed fine.

Hello Torso, welcome to the forum. I understand your Dad is in a hurry and you probably can't do much of anything anymore if action nr 3 really worked... but please don't start new/repreat threads with the same issue. Someone... me for instance, was really going to look at your first posts...

Can you specify which browser(s) you've tried. And what is your internet (adsl/cable) speed?
Are all above pings from this same machine?

+ the fact that are using the same CAT could be part of the problem.... sounds as extra but try again but this time be sure to have rebooted the system after plugging the lan in. To force DHCP network settings....

Hi,
a few weeks ago, my desktop computer, which remains off 5 days a week randomly, started to show extremely slow speeds in browsers. On both Chrome and Firefox, pages will take minutes to load and when it does load, the page is stripped to bare text and maybe some pictures. Any other program which connects to the internet, such as online games and MSN are fine and have no problems. I've tried clearing cache, restarting, and scanning for spyware with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and although it found some spyware and trojans, it was nothing new as my desktop had already been long infected. Is there anything else I should try? Should I just post a HJT log anyways?
Thanks

Answer:Internet browser speed slow, everything else fine

Please click HERE to download and install HijackThis.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile from the Main Menu.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

My orange broadband connection normally runs at around 0.7 to 0.9 down, 0.4 up. For the past week when I use the internet, some pages can be slow to load or hang part way through. Refreshing the page usually works, and it randomly affects any website. My router shows a constant connection during all this, and it syncs after resetting no problem, and I have swapped over routers and the same happens, so its not the router. I've checked/swapped over all the cabling, disconnected other network pcs/switches. It randomly affects all pc's on the network. When I run a speed test, the test sometimes hangs, other times it completes and shows a decent (by my standards) speed.Yesterday I lost all internet connection for 2 hrs, although the router itself still connected OK to the internet? Only thing I can think of is that it is due to me temporarilly attaching another router/wap to the network last week and this has caused some kind of IP address problem. What should I try next??

Answer:internet hangs, but connection and speed fine!

Flush DNS is always an option worth tryingFrom a command prompt (run as admin) type, ipconfig /flushdns and press enterThis will flush the DNS cache Then type, net stop dnscache and press enter followed by,net start dnscache and press enter.

I have Rogers internet in Toronto, Canada, and everything was working just fine up until a few days ago.

Now, every time I attempt to download something, the d/l speed goes up to normal (around 3.5 megabytes/sec) but then stops, going down to 0kb/s. I've been using Downthemall as a download manager in Firefox, so I pause the download and resume it, and it goes back up to full speed only to go back down to 0kb/s a few seconds later. When I browse the internet, some times the pages load right away, but other times I have to go to the address, then hit refresh in my browser to load the page, as if it didn't load the first time. I've tried different browsers (chrome, FF, opera, IE) and consistently get the issue.

There are no issues with connectivity, as all of the lights on my router seem to indicate a strong connection.

I assumed this was an issue with my ISP, so I reset my router to default settings and set up my connection again, but the same problem persisted. I tried lowering my MTU's until the packets weren't fragmented, but that didn't help.

I then tried anti-virus/malware scans, but those turned ... Read more

I have a friend who's computer works great on my network and my computer works great on his network, but when his computer is hooked to his network internet connectivity is slow and intermittantly fails.

Both computers are were connected directly to the router via the same ethernet cable, both units are laptops.

Again, vista believes it is connected to the internet, and it is, but the connection is just horrible. At my house it works beautifully.

His computer that is not connecting:
HP pavilion dv6748us.
procesor is AMD turion64x2
OS VISTA Home Premium 32bit
2 gb RAM

My laptop that worked on his connection is:
old SONY with windows XP pro
1gb RAM

Already have done the following:
Reset internet explorer 7
used the MSCONFIG console to turn off ALL startup processes just in case.
Ran a quick scan with superantispyware

I would have tried a differant browser but I could not download it, took it to my house so I could use a flash drive or let it sit forever and download and to my amazement there was no connectivity issues whatsoever.

Like the topic says-my internet download speed slows down after 3PM, but my upload stays fine. I know this doesent have to do with website traffic. I tried setting up a server from a firneds computer and downloading from there-same problem.
I went on speedtest.net. Here are my current results:
Upload-794kbps
Download-334kbps

The results at 12PM has the same upload speed, but the download speed was almost 10 times higher. More like-
Upload-734kbps
Download-3424kbps.

What could be the problem?

Answer:Download Speed Slowing Down After Afternoon-upload Is Fine

It's either traffic or throttling or bottlenecking, as they would call it.1. Maybe you're downloading something and they're monitoring it?2. Does this happen all the time, or has this just started happening? Maybe they're upgrading, or making hardware changes, during those times.3. Have you contacted your isp about this?4. And when you say you tried setting up a server from a friends computer, are you saying that you both are using the same isp company?

Basicly i can type in an address, it has the loading icon but it doesnt load for like 20-30 seconds, then all of a sudden it will load the page almost instantly, then say i click on a link on the page again, it does the same thing. meanwhile i can play warcraft with 45ms ping.

i did all the basic stuff, emptied cache, cookies, temp internet files, temp files, etc etc nothing works. i pasted my hijack this under here hopefully someone can figure this out its very annoying

It started about two days ago, I was using this connection for ages now. The download speed seems fine at the moment but my ping goes through the roof.
I tried restarting the router, I have no process running in the background stealing speed or any of that stuff.

Answer:Relatively fine download speed, extremely high ping

Maybe you should move closer to your router, or it could be your firewall slowing down your ping. You could also use a wired connection (like a Ethernet cable) if you haven't already. Also, did you do anything to affect your connection those two days ago? Or did it happen out of nowhere? Make sure to scan for malware or other malicious software on your computer that could be messing with it. Most people here ask for ipconfig/all, it usually reveals the problems of your connection issues. So make sure to put that in your thread soon. You can also put your PC statistics as well for us to see if anything would be incompatible with your computer and router.

I just updated to Windows 10 but I think the problem was with Windows 8 too, Sometimes my internet is out on my PC while the internet is still up on my brothers PC, tho this problem happens about 3 times a very few days.. We have 5+ computers in the house and 4 are on daily while 3 is being used daily the 4th one is not very used daily and sometimes off most of the time. So the 2 computers have Windows 10 and 3rd computer has Windows 7 while the 4th computer has Windows 10 also. I read on an article which says that Windows 10 uses bandwidth without you know and I checked task manager and on windows 8 my CPU and Memory was just fine and when I upgraded to Windows 10 my CPU spiked to about 20% and Memory spiked to about 72% and sometimes random numbers appear on all 4 sections( CPU, Memory, Disk, Network).

So how can I fix this problem or is it just Windows 10?

Ok, I'm in a pickle here.
In the household we have 3 computers. 1 computer upstairs is the main computer with the router. My computer and the girlfriends is downstairs on wireless. We are currently paying for a 7.5 Mbps download speed. The computer upstairs and my girlfriends computer which is 10 feet away, get speeds between 7.5 Mbps and 10 during boost. My computer during a speed test will spike to 7.5 Mbps and remain anywhere from 2 Mbps to 3.5, roughly have of what they have. I have tested both wireless devices on my computer and my girlfriends, no improvement. She is running a device plugged via usb, I'm running a wireless card. Tried her usb, no success. Went into Task Manager and processes looking for other programs that would eat bandwidth, no success. And played around for a little bit with the channel settings on my card. It is Asus 802.11n Wireless Lan Card. It a quick fix by disabling a function I don't know about. I'm pretty computer savvy and can not for the life of me figure this out.

Running Windows 7, Kaspersky, Shaw is my ISP.

Ever since I've upgraded to Windows 10 I've noticed one weird artifact - torrents are much slower and they take much longer to pick up speed.

Now, why would that be? Well, the only observation I could make is that on Windows 10 it takes so much longer for PC to connect to peers. I've noticed this with BitLord, BitTorrent and Popcorn Time as well as some other downloaders that, perhaps, use peer-to-peer connection.

Now, as I cannot directly compare two PCs, I am not sure if Windows 10 somehow butchers each peer so it needs to connect to more than the usual amount of peers, but I did need to tweak the settings of torrent software.

I put Windows 10 on 2 of my other PCs and they all suffer the same issue as I. So it appears to be universal. I had Windows 8.1 and torrents would instantly rock up to 1.0-1.2Mb/s. However, even with the most optimal settings in BitTorrent, it takes some time, up to 10 or even 15 seconds sometimes, though mostly around 5 seconds for quicker torrents. The issue here is the fact that software, such as Popcorn Time, don't have those settings and downloads are not working as they used to.

And contrary to all that; when I went to test my speed, on 2 different websites, the results were normal, unaffected.

Anyone experiencing similar issues?

Answer:Windows 10 slowing down torrents/downloads - internet speed fine

It is not Windows 10. It is either the software. Or your ISP is seeing your monthly use far more than reasonable and placed a soft throttle on your modem/gateway.

Hey All,

On My Windows 8 laptop, my speed in going to sites seems fine. I have TWC wireless Internet and my desktop, running Windows 10 always shows the full range with all the signal lines filled in on the system tray icon. My desktop, on the PC I had before ran Windows 7 and speed tests on both Windows 7/10 are normal.

But, on my Windows 8.1 laptop, the most I can get is the Internet icon not full, but one notch from the top. Today, it is barely off the first mark. On average, it goes about half way up the scale.

I have Turbo Internet from TWC and get about 22-25Megs down on my desktop. My laptop gets maybe 15-20 megs down. I should add that my laptop is in my bedroom on the other side of the house, quite far from my Wireless router. Pages seem to come up faster than my slow speed indicator shows. Troubleshooter in Windows 8 shows no problems. Cleaned the Cache in all browsers, flushed DNS. Am I just going to be stuck with a crappy signal range on this laptop because my Wireless router is too far away from it for a strong signal?

Jack

Hi!
As the title explains, I have a 40k Mbit/s connection, which my father's and sister's laptop get as advertised, but my pc gets speeds that vary from 2k-15k Mbits/s. Although, when I connect to the internet via ethernet cable the speed is as advertised, around 30k-40k. So I replaced the wifi adapter usb, but that did nothing, so I ran malware tests, even though nod32 did end up removing a MyStartSearch browser malware, internet speed is still slow. My dad also reset and reconfigured the router's setting but to no avail. I'm all out of ideas at this point, what to do next?
I also checked for any programs that might interfere or limit my internet speed in any way but found none. I should also mention that between malwarebytes and nod32 ive perhaps removed the same MyStartSearch malware 5 times already.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Answer:Wifi speed is inexplicably slow, other pc's unaffected, with ethernet cable fine

I've removed the startsearch malware before and after i got the rly bad internet, it doesn't really seem to be related to it tho.

I have just purchased and Installed an New DELL Windows 7 Premium PC with an i5 processor and 6 GB of RAMOn my Same home network....I also have a really OLD Dell XP Home PC with a P4 processor and 1 GB of RAMPROBLEM:While the new i5 is much faster just running programs.....when I open a Web Page (IE, FireFox, or Chrome).....it's REALLY SLOW to load the page.Occasionally, I get a message that states "This page is not accessible"....and I have to refresh to get it to load.And...once the page does load....clicking on any link (to another page or another site)....has the same SLOW lag while the pages loads.SPEED TEST: BUT....I can go to one of several speed test sites (like speakeasy.net)...and while the page is SLOW to load....once the actual Speed Test DOES Start...it runs FINE...and reports my expected bandwidth (around 3 Mbts)....which is what it should be).I can spin my chair around the the Old XP PC and open the browser....and pages load MUCH faster.WHAT I HAVE DONE.-Uninstalled all the "Bloat Ware" that comes with many of the Dells.-Stopped everything but 2 or 3 basic items from the startup (in msconfig).-Run 2 different registry cleaners after uninstalling-Turned OFF the Windows firewall to see if it made a difference...it does NOT...so I turned it back on.-Checked the network connection settings to make sure the IP and DNS are set to automatic (just like the old XP computer). The only program loading at start-up is plain old Microsoft Security Essentials. There are ... Answer:FAST Speed Tests -But SLOW Web Page Loading -XP runs Fine???

Do you have the same browsers and same versions and same settings (i.e. IE 8 ) on the old and the new PC ? If different, then different browsers have different web page control mechanisms. Especially old PC may have less control on the web pages. Therefore, web pages load faster.I suggest you check the browser add-ons and identity spoofing filters and whatnot and turn them off temporarily for test purposes. Are using the 64-bit IE without add-ons or 32-bit IE with add-ons ? Hello,

I'm running vista 64. About a week ago, my internet browser started hanging very badly. I've downloaded all the spyware scans, but nothing seems to fix it. When I actually start a download, it's running full speed, but I can't get into many websites at all like download.com or fileplanet.com

Hi there, i was wondering if you could help me this problem i've been having for the past 3 days now. I recently downgraded from Vista to XP, and ever since then i've had download speeds of 5kb/s or less. Before now, i couldn't get onto anywebsites because it would time out, things like www.yahoo.com would take about 5 minutes to open properly. I did notice that when i was asked which partition to install XP on there was 2 sub partitions on the C drive for some reason. Anyway long story short, i managed to fix it by using the format option from booting the pc with the vista installation disk, then put xp in etc.
So, browsing speeds are normal for me, but i can't get on my online games because it just times out due to the slow download speeds, and anything large in size takes extremely long to download even with internet download manager, I've been waiting 10+ minutes for windows live messenger to finish downloading and installing and it still hasn't done so.
If you could have a look at my hijack this log and let me know what you see wrong it'd be much appreciated thanks.
Not sure if this is to do with a virus, ran AVG, Malawarebytes etc and they haven't picked anything up.

My speedtest.net performance is 30 Mbps download, and between 0.3 and 2.0 Mbps upload. If I start in safe mode with netorking, I get download and upload speeds of 25-30, my contracted speeds. Obviously, something loading in the full mode interferes with upload speed. I have tried restarting in safe mode with all of the items checked in the services and programs tabs in msconfig, and still get excellent up and download speeds. How can I figure out what is interfering with my upload speed in normal mode, but not in safe mode?

Answer:Poor upload speed in normal mode, fine in safe mode

Use msconfig to determine what is causing the problem

How to use msconfig in Windows 7

Click on Start then Run, type msconfig and press Enter.
Click on the Startup tab, record what is currently starting then click the Disable All button.
Reboot and see if it runs better.
If yes then use msconfig to enable several items at a time till you find the culprit.

If no, start msconfig and click on the Services tab.
Check the Hide All Microsoft Services box, record what is currently starting then click the Disable All button.
Again, do a regular boot, see if it runs normal.
If yes then use msconfig to enable services till you find the culprit.

Once you've found the culprit, uninstall it or find out how to eliminate it from your system. Simply disabling it in msconfig is a temporary fix at best.
Enable everything else you disabled.

Hi everybody I hope someone can help me, I have a new W500 and am having trouble with the WLAN. When browsing with Explorer or Chrome everything is really slow, but when I run a speedtest I get 7mbs in download and 300bps in upload. This never happened before but startet after I allowed Messenger to fix my connection when I was at a new hotspot! I am connected to the internet which makes this very hard to fix, If there was no connection this would be easier because all tests say that everything is ok. Thanks

Answer:Slow browsing despite fast speedtest (download)

Welcome to the forums What happens when you dont use the messenger?Did you un-install the messenger and try out?You can try changing the number of http requests for IE but that would mean editing the registry.  I sometimes use tune up utilities to optmize the connection speed .You can get a trail version here and see whether it helps you to set your  browsing speed http://www.tune-up.com/download/

Hi there,
So for the past week, all of a sudden my internet has gone slow. So i checked on speedtest.net what my speed was and its fine: 11.47 mbps. Like
going onto websites that have a lot of images, scripts takes FOREVER to download, as towards bottom of browser a little bar says "waiting for ... cache/extension" etc . BUT going on simple page like Google works OK, still not as fast as it used to
be. [P.S. Family members using the internet on their laptops is fine, just for me it isn't]

I have been checking around other issues, and doing MANY things to figure it out, and now getting the hint that it may be to do with my DNS settings
or something (no idea about things like this) .. here are any details that might help any of you to understand more, as well as a list of what I've been doing :

I use Google ChromeComputer is Windows VistaI have cleared all cache, history, data, still not helpingMy IPv4 / 6 are both on automaticChanging it to manual and typing in IP addresses [found on other forums] still do not workI did do a ping.test, and I got this: Unable to test packet loss!I also downloaded 'Connectivity diagnostic' from Google extensions, and did a test, this came back: DNS resolution took longer than averageDisabled my AVG AntiVirus, but still doesn't workOpened cmd.exe, and typed ipconfig: this is the connection 4 settings [which is the main thing that counts i think]

Answer:Internet speedtest fast, but browsing extremely slow ?

Hi, yes I had tried that before, but it still doesn't work - However, I just started my computer in 'safe mode with networking' and my internet seemed to load fine, as well as other websites ?? But it still does not work, when I start it normally

So I uninstalled AVG completely. and downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials. I thereby unchecked everything from the start up tab, restarted computer- and STILL internet doesn't work 0_0

As well as disabling all Startup items in msconfig, you should in addition try disabling all non-Microsoft services by selecting the "Services" tab and checking the "Hide all Microsoft services" checkbox then unchecking all remaining services
above. Reboot and check your connection. If you see improvement start re-enabling services abd start-up items in between reboots until you find the problem. See Vista section and "How to determine what is causing the problem by performing a clean boot"
section in:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

If no improvement is seen with all non-Microsoft services and all startup items disabled, check system files by entering "sfc /scannow" in an elevated command prompt (right click Command prompt shortcut and select "Run as Administrator").

Ive never had this happen in this fashion before, Speed test everywhere report around 6000/350 for me, yet surfing and downloading is horribley slow, webpages will load half way and usually require reloading to get them to display. Downloading a 1 meg file takes 5 minutes!, yet speed test show great speeds!.

I reformatted twice this weekend on unrelated issues(X2 4400+ installs) but this has been happening for a week now, no spyware, no viruses

Answer:Speedtest speeds normal...Browsing websites and downloading horribley slow

Try deleting your stored webpages and change the reserved size from what the windows alloted percentage is down to around 200mb and change the selection to Every time I visit. Also try flushing your DNS cache.

IE/Tools/Internet Options/Temporary Internet Files/settings.

I've been running speedtest on my laptop and it's been topping out at around 5mbps down, 9 mbps up, 40 ping on wireless, which doesn't make any sense. My phone on the other hand is getting speeds of 20+ down, 10+ up, around 40 ping as well on wireless.

When playing a game my ping is quite low, but will get random lag spikes into the 300+ range for no reason. It's gotten worse in the past couple of days. I haven't directly connected my laptop with an ethernet cable as I have no extras around, but I updated my wireless adapter drivers and it didn't do anything. Also scanned for malware several times. Any ideas?

Download Speed: 23.87 Mbps
Upload Speed:14:16 Mbps
Ping:25 ms

Is the speed normal? Also why is the Ethernet port on my computer orange and blinking green, and also in the Ethernet status it says that my speed is 1.0 Gbps?

Answer:Internet speed speedtest?

The Ethernet status report of 1 Gbps is the speed of the Ethernet port of your computer.

The reported Download and Upload speeds measured speeds. You need to contact your ISP to see if these speeds are normal for your connection. You get what you pay for.

The ping time of 25 ms is normal.

Answer:My down speed only reaching 50kB/s on speedtest.net

I've been promised 1mB/sClick to expand...

Who promised you this? And are you sure? Usually ISPs claim "up to" x Mbps. Seldom, if ever, do they promise a minimum speed nor do they specify it in Bytes per second.

What kind of service (DSL, 3G mobile wireless, etc.) do you have?

Hi, My friend did a windows recovery after he had a black screen when starting windows. Both IE and Firefox had slow connectivity yet I had him do a speedtest with speakeasy.net and it showed good speeds. He says the longer the computer is on, the slower is a surfing the internet. CPU usage is normal.

internet speeds:
2500kbps/400kbps

Could the recovery have messed with his computer networking drivers? He used a gateway recovery disk. His computer is either a gateway or dell computer.

Answer:After computer recovery - browser speed slow, internet speedtest normal

So your computer is NOT a gateway or dell? Is that what your saying? If so, you can't just use any recovery cd on your computer. Let me know more details.

It might just be spyware/malware. I would check the add/remove programs list for any suspicious programs or toolbars and remove them.

Answer:Does this log look fine?

Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you.
I apologize for the delay getting to your log, the helpers here are very busy.

A couple things that I notice. First you have no antivirus installed. That's bad.
Then there are a few lines that could be cleaned up, but no signs of malware.

Are you having problems?

Or should I remove the battery first if I am going to use all day? Please answer. Thanks

Answer:Hi I am new here. I am going to ask if it is fine ...

If you're going to use it plugged in for a long time, some like to remove the battery. If it's a short time, it won't hurt. The bad thing about using it without a battery is, if you lose power, you lose whatever isn't saved.

Question: Will I be fine?

Hello guys, forgive me for a what may appear to be a common sense question.

I just installed Windows 7 Premium (full) on my new custom computer build but paranoia has now gotten the best of me.

My question is: If I were to install a new main drive (ie SSD) would I have a problems doing a fresh install again? or will I need a new product key? I'm assuming I'll be fine if I'm not upgrading something major? (ie motherboard)

THANKS

Answer:Will I be fine?

Hi there jeffwindows7 welcome to the forums yes I would imagine that should all be fine. the only issue you might have, is you may need to just give Microsoft a call to activate it.

Is this a pre-built computer or did you build it yourself? If this is a pre-built computer, could you please provide the make and model information.
The information you provided does not give us enough information to determine what you can / should do. I can see that you have an Intel i3-3220 CPU running at 3.3GHz and a single stick of 4GB Ram running @ 1.5V, and possibly an Asrock motherboard, but need more specifications.
Also, what do you plan on doing with the computer (gaming, web browsing, reports, video editing, etc)?

On Friday nights I usually attend a gaming club that is hosted at my local college where a bunch of people gather to play video games. I take my ASUS G53SW laptop and play games on steam. My problem is that my wireless connection is so slow and I am limited to single player only games, I get bored after awhile and would rather play some online games. While trying to update a patch for League of Legends I was getting a whopping 5-7 Kbps download rate. If I try playing an FPS such as Counter strike, or left 4 dead I can join the game fine, but then my ping skyrockets into the 500+ range. Everyone around me playing online on consoles and even other laptops are playing online games the entire time without any trouble. I updated all my wireless drivers and it didn't help any. Anyone know what might be happening?
