Connecting 1 wireles (comp) through WRT54GL to Secondary computer (LAN)

Question: Connecting 1 wireles (comp) through WRT54GL to Secondary computer (LAN)

Hello i hope this doesnt sound to stupid.

I have been reding through tons of posts, but i havent been able to find a way to connect my labtop, that has a mobile modem and wireless so that ICS would pass through wireless to my WRT54GL (DD-WRT) and connect to my secondary computer through LAN Cable.

I would apreciate any help you guys could provide, it would be a life saver.

Thanks
Jack

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Connecting 1 wireles (comp) through WRT54GL to Secondary computer (LAN)

if the laptop is wireless then you should be able to connect directly to the wireless router - then its just a case of file sharing - no need for ICS at all

You dont need to the mobile modem or wireless - if the laptop already has a built in wireless adapter - if not then you can use the mobile wireless to connect to the router

what window versions do you have on each PC

Cannot connect this computer to Galaxy S2 mobile wireless hotspot. Network is "seen" as secure but cannot "connect to network" (error message). Same problem on 1 other identical computer - both with AC3160 adapter. No problem connecting to this mobile wireless hotspot with Surface Pro 3, Asus N61-JQ, and Lenovo Laptop - all with Win 10 - and all NOT with AC3160. I have installed latest adapter driver updates for AC3160 and spent hours scouring web for answers - nothing! Any suggestions?

Mmm... A wifi printer... which you seem to imply has no USB connection? Is this correct? Out of interest what make model? I ask as just about any wifi printer I have seen has a USB input - if only to assist in setting it up?

alright were havin a little problem first let me tell you about the two computers:

Computer A: Windows XP Home Edition
Has the Cable modem connected to it
Has the router connected to it
512mb ram

Computer B: Windows 98SE
Being Wirelessly connected to the xp computer

Ok well i know i have my network set up because a) i went through the XP computer, and The 98SE computer is getting an internet connection and finally C) because the XP can connect to the 98SE but not visa versa

Now every time im on the 98SE computer and i try to connect to the XP comp i get this "Resource: \\MAIN\IPC$" Then its askin for a password, ive tried every single password ive known it wotn connect, i have even made an account exactly the same as the 98SE computer on the XP computer. IE (this is true) The windows 98SE computer has a username of Default and password - nothing. So i went to the XP connection, i made an account named Default and in the password field put nothing. I dont know what else to do ive tried everything plz help soon!!!

Answer:problem connecting 98SE comp to Xp comp but not visa versa

On the XP machine:
1) Is the firewall turned off? If you have SP2 it is turned on by default.
2) Have you shared any folders yet?

My computer's boot Hard Drive is a SATA Seagate. When I tried installing an 80 gig WD IDE as a secondary storage drive (set as cable select and on Slave attachment on ribbon cable) the computer wouldn't go to Windows, but would say NTLDR is Missing.

How do I get my comp to start up w/ the SATA drive and use the second HDD as a storage drive? On my other comp I did it with 2 IDE drives and it was no problem.
Thanks much!

Answer:Problem installing secondary IDE HDD on comp w/ SATA HD

What's on your IDE hard drive?

Sounds like windows wrote some windows file's when it was a slave under windows.

Go into your bios (delete key upon booting most likely) and set your SATA drive as the primary boot

OK, my problem is the following:

When I was installing Windows 7 I partitioned my hard drive into two parts. The first one I allocated 20GB of free space for Windows to use. The second one I crated, was allocated 230 something GB for music, software, etc. The problem is that when I started my computer for the first time only the first one (20GB) was showing under My computer. The second one (230GB) wasn't there as a separate label. How do I make this work? Please help. Thank you in advance.

Answer:Secondary partition created doesn't show under My Comp

Welcome!

That seems pretty straightforward. Type diskmgmt.msc into the start menu and press enter.

Right-click on the "hidden" partition and select Assign drive letter and paths. Then give that drive a letter!

Good luck,
~JK

Answer:computer will not reconise kodak wireles printer

do you have any other pcs that are able to connect to the printer

this shows you how to connect to the wireless router
http://resources.kodak.com/support/shtml/en/manuals/urg01381/urg01381c2s1.shtml

whats the make and model of your wireless router

i would suggest you do this first and post back the information from the network settings on the printer
taken from the above link - bottom of the page

Printing the network configuration
To print the current network configuration:
Load plain paper into the printer. (See Loading plain paper.)
Press home
Press to select Network Settings, then press OK.
Press to select Print Network Configuration, then press OK.

then we can at least check if the printer is connected OK first

Hi Everyone

I'm faced with a difficult problem here. I have my internal network hooked up on our lower floor and upper floor. We also have a secondary backup DSL line which is on the upper floor.

Now we want to setup wireless internet to our lower floor but the only we can do this is to run a cat5 cable through the ground.
I know there is another way to do it with our managed switches. Someone told me was called Virtual network or Virtual LAN something like that. You can configure one port from each switch to work with that "other network". So the downstairs switch will get the signal from that one port to use the backup DSL line.

It's something I'm not familiar with which is why I posted here to see if I'm going the right direction or if this is even possible!!

Hi,

I have a Windows 7 Ultimate PC with a VTX3D Radeon HD5450 1GB PCIe DVI graphics card connected to a Panasonic TX-32LZD85 TV, set up as a secondary monitor, via an HDMI cable.

I recently reinstalled Windows and before I did, when I watched a video on the TV the sound came out of the TV speakers, but now it just comes out of the PC speakers. Please can someone tell me how to get the sound to come out of the TV as well as the picture?

Thanks,
Joe

Answer:Connecting PC To TV As Secondary Monitor (Audio Problems)

Since I'm getting a 360 now I'm going to get a router for them to both share my cable connection.

I was thinking of Wireless Vs Wired.

At first I was going to go wireless, but since I play to use my xbox on my computer monitor/sound system it's going to be close to my computer already, so I don't really need to do I?

I was thinking about going wireless with this modem: (the <rev 3 or under one)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833124010

However after a while when I started to think that wired probally would be fine I found this modem:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833127013

Which one should I get?

Also there is quite a bit of a price difference too. With the wireless modem I would have to buy an adapter to hook it up. However with the wired one I already have on-board ethernet so all I have to do is buy another ethernet cable and i'm good to go.

However speed-wise/stability, etc what am I going to get? I usually think with the mindset of "you get what you pay for" however the d-link modem has quite a few very good reviews for it, aswell it's xbox live compatible and everything.

Answer:Need to get a router for my computer/xbox 360. What modem should I get? Wired/wireles

Neither of those are modems. They are routers. Completely different devices. You would use a wireless modem if you needed say, an internet connection on the road or outside your house, in a laptop, but didn't want to use a wireless NIC at a Hotspot. Sprint for instance..

Anyway, either of those budget routers would be fine. If you don't want wireless then get the wired if your comfortable with the feature set and price.

New job - they have tons of these ThinkCentres floating around, so there's two at like every station. IT won't allow us to bring in our own second monitor, nor will they provide us one, but with these extra all-in-one computers just sitting at the desk, I figured why not try to use the extra as a secondary monitor for the mean time. First question: Is that possible? I am not sure of their versions, and wouldn't be until Monday. They have an Ethernet port, followed by three USB ports, then it appears to be a DVI port all on the center back, near the bottom. Second question: If possible, how would I do it? I doubt it'd be as easy as just simply connecting a DVI cable between the two computers. If it's even possible, I'd think that somewhere along the lines I'd need to configure something for one computer to realize only the display is being used... Anyway, further info, in case it's relavent. I only have Admin access on one of the computers (the one that I need to use as my main workstation). The other computer has nothinig but power plugged to it at the moment.

Answer:Connecting 2 ThinkCentres via DVI cable to make one function as a secondary monitor.

which ThinkCentres model are we talking about here? M90z AIO, Edge 91z, M92z AIO?

Good morning to you all, I have the A wired desktop pc, and a wirelss toshiba C660 laptop, both are runningg windows 7, 64 bit. Desktop is connected with a wired connection, and laptop is connected wirelessly. I purchased an Epson Sx235 wireless printer, the pc is conncted to the printer with wired usb connection, and it works fine, ive decided to install the cd on my laptop this morning so I can print wirelessly with it. I've installed the software on laptop, but my printer does NOT seem to find my laptop,.... When i click on the Epson net setup , and click on next, it says connecting to printer,....the printer wi-fi light just flashes orange and green, likes it searching for the printer, then it just says cannot find the printer!!! Any suggestions please??

Answer:Wireless printer not connecting wirelessly on secondary Device....my laptop

I had this problem with an SX425 recently. First of all remove all the Epson Software from the laptop and reboot. Then use the Epson CD to reinstall it but don't use the secondary device option. Treat it as a brand new wi-fi installation and install everything using the express method. (Not Custom install)
If that doesn't cure the problem. Make sure the printer is shared on the desktop computer and set up the wireless manually on the printer settings menu.

Hello, I have a issue with my Lenovo X230 (P# 23060CTO) laptop, I have two access points at my residence, the primary access point is a D-Link DIR-655 and my secondary access point is a  D-Link DAP-1522. My X230 does not have any issues connecting to the primary access or any other access point I have tried to connect to thus far but when it connects to the secondary access point I get the notification limited or no connectivity. The SSID for the two access points are different, I have the  D-Link DAP-1522 access point in AP mode to extend my wireless network.  I believe my limited of not connectivity issues is a problem with my X230 because I have had guests be able to connect to the secondary access point and not have the limited or no connectivity issue while being connected for over an hour. Please let me know if you need anymore information to help me diagnose my issue. Thank you for any help that you can provide. Phil

hi, i am tryign to connect two computers, my desktop, a dimension xps t600 running windows xp and a inspirion 5100 laptop with wind xp also. i have a hp procurve 10base t hub 8 with a cable modem. i have it all hooked up correctly yet i can't seem to access the internet on the laptop. i think this has to do with my isp(cable optimum online), but i'm not completly sure. expanding on the isp idea, it might have to do with the subnet mask or ip address. as of now i can access the internet with the desktop (which is connected to the 10base t hub 8), but not with the laptop which is also connected to the 10base thub 8. any ideas or solutions would be helpful.

undefinedSubject: DVI cable
Does anyone know if DVI Cable is of any advantage over VGA cable?
Is there a particular trick that switches on the screen? I get black nothing...
Anyone familiar with the issue?

Answer:DVI Cable for connecting Monitor to Comp

I always go DVI when I can. Once you get used to it things just look kind of dingy on DB15. As far as your black screen problem have you tried just swapping out the DVI cable? Perhaps you have a dual input monitor and just need to switch over to digital input from analog?

HiJust changed over to sky and can not get my laptop to connect spoke to sky loads but not very helpful. I have got sagem router from sky, and i used to use a netgear pc card when i was with ntl can any one tell me what i need so my lap top will connect please.

Answer:Connecting laptop with main comp

Do you mean you used a Netgear PC card to enable your laptop to connect via wireless, a PCMCIA card?Is the wireless card picking up any wireless networks around you (my Sky Netgear one picks up about 3 or 4)?If it is then the lappy is 'seeing' wireless networks then so it's just the router that needs setting up.Have you set the SSID to 'broadcast'?If yes then your laptop should detect your router.Have you set a WEP or WPA passphrase?Set the passphrase on the laptop to the same as the one on the router. This should allow you to connect to the router/net now.Remember to turn off SSID broadcast and the default username and passwords for the router when it's all up and running.Good luck.

Hi,
I'm having trouble connecting one of the computers to a Zyxel router, it started off as constant disconnections that over a couple of weeks just totally disconnected and wouldn't connect again at all. My other computer runs well and hasn't had any troubles. I tried replacing the network card and the cable but to no avail, it just won't connect. I have deleted and uninstalled all previous cards but nothing helps. I also tried the netsh reset commands but that doesn't fix it either. This is the ipconfig info.

I have a HP running Vista, and also have a second computer (Dell) with XP. I have a cable internet connection through Comcast, with a modem they provided (an ARRIS model, they have a sticker over the exact model number). I have a DLink WBR-2310 Wireless G Router. The primary computer has an internet connection but I cannot get the second to connect. The second computer does not have an ethernet port so I have a USB Etherlink connector from Comcast (model XNUE-101C), which allows the connection to plug into a usb port instead of ethernet. The guy from Comcast said I need the driver for the Etherlink which I found via a google search and downloaded from the primary computer then loaded onto the secondary with a floppy. I also installed the driver on the primary just incase. All I did to install was dl the driver which was a zip file then uncompressed, is there more steps needed to properly install the driver? I know the router is functioning properly but it is not showing any connectivity for the line that is running to the second computer, no matter which port I plug the line into. I'm out of ideas and any help will be appreciated.

Answer:Problem Connecting Comp. with Dlink and usbetherlink

After unzipping your download wasn't there a setup (or some other .exe) to be run?

Is your USB ethernet adapter showing in Device Manager as OK? Does it show up in Network Connections?

Does the adapter have a LED on it, and does that light as well as the LED for the corresponding port on the router when you connect the cable?

Hi there, this is my first post, ill try to be as detail specific as possible so here goes.

We purchased this computer around 3 years ago from the site, everything default from the manufacturer.

It was regularly used for work/homework/research. Then it was used primarily for gaming (a game that eats the HD quickly)

We added a 9200AGP Radeon Graphics card, and bumped the computer to one gig of ram.
We then gave it a wireless ethernet card.

Through wear and tear it became slow, would take a long time to boot up, would restart on its own, and sometimes even blue screened.

We had used the HP recovery to try reformatting, and bringing it back to a better day, but it didnt do much.

Just recently i decided to do a full reformatting, deleted both partitions and set up a brand new partition for Windows XP professional.

Everything is looking good, computer is faster, boots up quick, doesnt restart/bluescreen/shutdown at all.

But its completely unconnected to the internet. I went to the HP site and downloaded the drivers for it, burnt it, transferred it to the computer, installed, and still had no connection.

Has anyone had this problem before? Does anyone know of a way to get it connected back up to the internet?

Thanks so much for your time, and im sorry for the long run on post.

I know its a long story, but it has a point. (I think )

I'm "fixing" my Sis-in-law's computer (yeah, I'm probably not the best one to do this). It runs XP, but I'm not sure what kind of computer it is. At Thanksgiving, she says to me, "my computer is running slow." I said, "what kind of virus protection are you running?" (I know that's not the only reason a comp can run slow, but I figured it was a place to start.) She tells me, "we had something on it a couple of years ago, but it expired." I had her start up the computer, which we're gonna call "Bob" for clarity. Bob has 3 users set up. On User#1 (the main one), I noticed she had a fake virus alert mal. She says it doesn't pop up on the other (also admin) users. I said, "Don't worry, I know a program that can take care of that." I downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and told it to run. It couldn't so eventually I ended up over on User #2, where it finally started. I told it to run a full scan since Bob had been unprotected for so long. We left before it finished. I have attached the first 2 logs mbam produced. (it's a long story as to why those are dated in December.) So my SIL calls to tell me she can no longer connect to the internet, and User#1 has nothing on its desktop, and isn't functioning properly. Everything I have done since has been from User#2. (User #3 also appears to be functional but no internet anywhere... Read more

I have just installed a 400GB Hitachi HDD to operate as a slave drive in my machine. I believe the installation was a success as the device is showing in my device manager and it says "The device is working properly". Also in the CMOS setup, the drive is recognised and set up as 'Auto'.However, the device is not showing up in My Computer or Windows Explorer. Please help?!?Many thanks

Answer:Secondary HDD won't show in My Computer

Did you recieve an Hitachi CD with the new drive ? ?This includes tools to prepare it for use...Windows will not recognise a drive until it is formatted. Many drives are shipped this way out of the box.Boot with the CD in and select format and you should be good to go.If you didn't recieve a CD the tools can be DLoaded from their site.

I'm new to Windows 7 and am getting frustrated that I can't transfer to another site recommended on a page. ie: I'm on Nextag and it lists Newegg as a site that has my product but when I click on Newegg it won't open that page. Another example just happened when I was on a page that listed some forms available for download or print however my computer won't bring up those pages.
Am I missing a program like Adobe 5.5 or is this something to do with my set up?
I am using an HP 6200 Pro with Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.
I have installed Foxit Reader 5 and Adobe Reader X.

Answer:Computer won't transfer to a secondary file??

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

To go to another website through a link from the website open on your browser, you do not need Acrobat or Acrobat Reader. These programs are required only to open PDF files either on local drive or on a website.

In your example you are in Nextag web site and you tried to go to Newegg website by clicking on the Newegg name. Is the Newegg name on the website given as a link or not. Usually a link is indicated with a different color for text and when you keep the mouse on this link, the mouse cursor changes to a hand and in the web browser's status bar the target website's address is given. If it is a link with Newegg website as target you will be transferred to that site, when clicked on the link. If it is just text then by clicking on it, nothing happens.

About the forms on the webpage also you could not download the forms.

Could be your mouse not working properly? I mean the left button to select and to open a link not working properly. Try the Right button for the Left button function and see. If it is working then your buttons functions have been reversed. You can fix this by going to the mouse applet in Control Panel.

Please check your mouse. It it still does not work, give us more details.

i recently built this p3 system its running windows 98se...lol dont laugh

everything on the system is running fine, just recently i decided to add my secondary HDD from my other computer to the p3 system becuase i want to be able to listen to all my music files.

anyways i installed the hardware (correctly) lol so dont ask to to check the cables or jumper cuz they are set in the correct position.

wierd thing is when i click on my computer, only my C drive appears... not my secondary drive..

when i go to the device manager it shows both drives. and it also says there working properly and there are no conflicts..

my guess is win98 doesnt automatically assign a driver letter ie.{F:} to the drive.

any ideas on how i could enable the driver so i can access my files?

Answer:Secondary HDD isnt shown in my computer?

Right click on My Computer, click manage, then go to disk management. You should see both volumes there and assign a drive letter.

It only does it some of the time, and it will boot up and show a Chkdsk, press any key to abort. blah blah blah. But when it does the check, it finishes in less than a minute and always finds no problems. I checked a previous thread and it said t edit the registry and modify an entry. I went to that subkey and it does not show that it is running the check. However since I have booted it up this morning it has not run it either. Seems only to happen every so often. Just kinda bugs me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

But now, it doesn't even show up that it has been installed or being used on my computer and won't let me access it at all. It's not even on My Computer. I tried reinstalling it, but it won't work. What should I do?

Can you hear or feel the problematic drive "spinning up"?

If he drive is not "spinning up" 1st check the voltage on the power source connected to the drive. If the power source voltage is correct, and the drive is not "spinning up", then you may have a defective drive controller board.

Hello,

I have an eMachines machine w/Vista Home Premium installed. I recently installed MagicJack (YMAX), and didn't realize until some time later that my DVD-RW drive disappeared from both Device Manager and My Computer. I went through MagicJack support (joke), they couldn't find their rear-ends with a map and GPS. So I ran Malwarebytes, it didn't find any bugs. By this point, I uninstalled MagicJack and went to do a System Restore, but by now it was too late, my pre-MagicJack restore point had already been purged. Now I notice my secondary IDE HDD has disappeared, too. My DVD-RW works, I can open and close it, I can feel the HDD spinning, but as far as Vista's concerned, neither one exists. At all.

So I've tried every trick I've been able to find on the internet: the upper and lower filters key deletions in the Registry; unplugging both devices, going into safe mode, running someone's 'fix', then re-plugging in the devices. Nothing's working. I'm finding it very hard to believe this is a hardware issue. For one, both went at the same time, and for two, both went when MagicJack was installed. And I don't believe in coincidences.

I'm an intermediate level IT guy, I'm not afraid to get into the registry and get my hands dirty, but this one has me totally stumped and I've no clue where to go from here. Both missing devices are IDE (my primary HDD is SATA), and they both run off the same ribbon cable. ... Read more

Hey there, first time posting on any kind of forum so I'll do my best to get my problem across.

I am adding a new set of larger drives into rotation on my backup server, the server is running Red Hat 7.3. With:

Asus P2B-DS motherboard
Award Modular Bios v4.51G
Kernel 2.4.18-27.x on an i686
Not sure how to find the chipset specs (still getting broken in with linux)

What's happening is when I put in one of the new drives (WD800, 80G western digital), it starts to boot, checks memory then jumps to the System Configuration menue and freezes right here:

Sec. Slave Disk : LBA, UDMA 2,

I believe what is supposed to come next in that line is the disk size..? Anyway it freezes there.

I believe that the problem is that my MB/chipset won't support the larger drive, although I tested putting in a 180G WD drive and it booted, but when I check it with parted I got read errors and couldn't print off a partition table. So I'm trying to check into if my system will support larger drives or not, if anybody has any ideas of something else it could be that would be great. Or even if you can tell me a quick way of telling me of checking to see if my MB/Chipset/Bios are compatable with a certain disk size. I also tested it with 3 of the exact same WD800's so it's not the drive, because I can read them all in other computers.

Thanks, sorry if I wasn't descriptive enough with specs and so on, if you need more let me know.

Answer:Computer Freezes on Boot Due to Secondary Slave HD

Is the motherboard very old ?
As today present day motherboard should not have a problem.
Why dont you find out what is your MB manufacturer and proceed to their website and check if you need to flash in new BIOS for your MB inorder to detect HD with bigger space.

I bought a new computer because my previous one broke. I was wondering if there was a way to bypass the hard drive in my computer, that's non-removable, to access the data I have on the old computers hard drive (chd).
I have an external hard drive set up that works with my computer and it seems to be responding (light turns on) when the chd is connected, but I can't access it.
Ive tried both turning the computer on with it connected and connecting when turned on.
Is it possible, or is all my stuff kaput?

All right, so I have an SSD and an HDD. Windows is installed to the SSD, but apparently Windows likes to create a boot partition on every drive that's connected when you install, which led to me not being able to boot without the secondary drive. This is usually not a problem (and, in fact, I didn't know until today), but now my secondary drive is giving out so I can only boot some of the time. How do I fix it so that my computer can boot without my secondary drive, letting me disconnect it until I get a replacement?

Answer:Allowing Computer to boot without secondary drive

I have 2 extra drives attached to this system and neither of them have a boot partition ? They were all running when I installed Windows 10 Pro on this machine.

I have a 250gb hard drive which i have windows 7 and ubuntu installed onto and a 1tb and a 1.5tb hard drive formated in ntfs(from when i ran mainly xp)

The disk drives dont show up in my computer but they do show up in disk management however they show as black(unallocated) despite the fact i know that is is allocated and has stuff on which i can still access via ubuntu and i cant assign them a label i know that they definatly work and are in ntfs format as i double checked this through ubuntu im sure its a simple fix but googling hasnt seemed to have turned it up yet :s

Thanks in advance

If its showing all space in black, I believe thats Unallocated Space.

In Disk Management:
Right click and create a partition (whatever size you want and however many you want)
just follow the prompts and it will guide you through setting it up.

This belongs in Networking, but I posted it there a while ago and it looks like everybody helpful already left there for the day. I've always posted in the Security forum before, and you guys are awesome... if this is a problem that I posted it here, let me know, and I apologize profusely...

Hey guys,

Okay, my house is already interesting, and it's about to become more so...

We have about ten computers in my house, all hooked up thru a switch in the den. In my room, I have one wall jack hooked up to our switch, and I can take the Cat5 in there and split it into two ethernet ports, and then on the other end, split it into two as well... but my main computer, call it computer A, has two ethernet ports, as does my secondary computer, call it B. Computer A has internet access right now thru our home network, and I was wondering...
Is there any way to hook up computer B thru computer A? That way, I wouldn't have to do any *funky* wiring... I have crossover cables, patch cables... computer A is running XP Pro, B is running 2000 server.
Any help is much appreciated, thank you!

Peace,
The Alker has spoken.

PS, I tried ICS w/ XP, but it has problems, I think because the main computer in the den is an ICS host, and it doesn't like two. I also thought about bridging the two NICs in computer A, but I don't know what bridging is...

Answer:Hooking up secondary computer thru primary (w/ two NICs)

Can someone please help me?... I'm lost :-(
If I'm really not allowed to do this, at least please tell me :-/

I seem to have a problem with the speed of my excel program and its willingness to move between cells in a timely manner. My computer is on a network and is not the main, however, all programs on my computer are stand alone programs (Individually installed). We simply share the data (Files) between them. Lately my excel program has been slow to respond to commands. (Type in one cell and tab over to continue typing in another cell and it takes a moment for the curser to catch up.) Although there are quite a few programs where data is shared, Excel seem to be the only one affected. Have talked with Gateway (OEM installed Office 2003) with no luck in solving the problem. Repaired and Reinstalled....still no change. Even tried unhooking the router. This did eliminate the problem, however, I need the shared files on the network. We did switch the ports around to make sure the the router wasn't bad and experienced the same problem no matter what port we were in. No other computer is experiencing the same problem, just mine.
Running windows XP 2002 (SP2) and on a Linksys router network.and if I am reading it right, 71ghz mem.

Please Help!

One of my hard drives simply disappears from my computer when I am in the middle of using it. It tends to happen right after start up within around 2 minutes of booting up but there are times when it does not. When it does disconnect I completely lose track of the hard drive in the system. I check the system disk management and it does not even show up there. I was even in the disk management window and saw it disappear on me. I checked the power options to make sure that that was not turning it off. I used different cables to see if that was it and no. For a while the only solution that I found was rolling back the Intel(R) management Interface Engine driver to version 9.5.24.1790. This worked for a time until windows 10 updated and the problem started again regardless of the MIE version. This is also something that only started to happen when I upgraded to windows 10 and did not happen when I was in windows 7 or 8. I would also like to note as the title says that when the hard drive shuts down (or at least I think that is what is happening) the computer does not turn off properly. The OS quits and everything else shuts down but the computer itself stays with blinking lights and sounds. I also turned off fast start of option the power options. Nothing else seems to be affected by the dissapearing hard drive but the system not shutting down properly.

Using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. W/ASUS P7P55D Deluxe board Very stable and non buggy.

Computer was running great with multiple drives. I substituted one of my 1TB drives with a brand new Seagate 3 TB drive. With the new drive hooked up, the computer will not boot and gives a message that there is no hard drive detected, put media in and hit the key. (something to that effect).

If I enter the bios in the condition, it shows all the drives in their correct order and the boot sequence is the first hard drive, CD, etc. It has detected the new drive as drive #3.

But it will not boot.

But, if I disconnect the new drive (power and SATA connector), the compute will boot up fine.

I have checked all the connectors ad they seem fine.

Is there something about the sequence in which the SATA connectors have to be connected?

I am mystified.

Answer:Computer won't boot with new Seagate Barracuda drive as secondary drv

Hi,

Sometimes the sequence can be critical. can you check to see that the original HDD is plugged into SATA port 0? If not, try that to see if it works.

Hi, excuse my unprofessional language here. I'll try to explain as best I can. We have a main computer connected to a second display screen running as an extended display. It all works fine except for Iview, our ABC free download programme. This programme runs fine on the extended screen, but when we try to play news or video on the main computer it won't work in full screen mode. It will work when it is downsized, but not full size version. For example there is a back button or forward or pause which don't work on the main screen, and when it is in full size version I have to actually press the "escape" button to get out of the programme. I have updated Chrome and Flash player is automatically updated with that I think. Can anyone help us here? Many thanks in advance.

HiJust wondering if anyone had any advice on an issue I have.Last week I turned my PC on and there was a pop and the smell of smoke and the computer would not power up. I figured it was the power supply unit and got a new one. I replaced the psu and wired everything up again. The PC still would not start. After a process of elimination, it turns out that when the secondary hard drive has power to it, the PC wont start at all. If I remove the power cable from it, the computer starts fine and works no problems.Nothing has changed apart from me putting a new psu in and I have checked and the drive is still wired up correctly etc. The drive is a seagate and I bought it a few months ago as I was running out of space.Any ideas what could be wrong? Has the hard drive been fried and if so how can I recover the data from it?Thanks

Back again. It's just one problem after the other...I recently formatted a brand new 80 gig hard drive and installed Windows XP Pro SP2 on it. This one is my main hard drive, and my secondary is a 200 gig. It's about two years old, and was brand new when I bought it. I would give you the specific details on it, but therein lies my problem. My computer boots fine, and I can easily view and access files on my C drive, but I can very rarely access my D drive unless I restart several times and check Explorer to see if it even shows up.I thought maybe it was just a loose cord or something on the inside, but I've made sure everything was tightly where it should be, and it still does this. It is a problem for me because all of my music and videos and games and whatnot are stored there, and I have no access to them.I am out of options at this point because I'm even less educated on computer hardware than I am software. I hope the answer I get isn't that my 200 gig is failing, because I just got to go through that issue with a six-year-old hard drive (which is why I got this new one).If any info is required about the screwy HD to troubleshoot, let me know and I'll reboot my computer until it shows itself :|

My recommendation would be to stay in IDE mode. The performance gain with AHCI is minimal anyhow. I run my Vista systems (all have SSDs) in IDE mode with no problem.

Hello,

Allow me to apologize and thank you in advance for any advice that you can give me. As my father is the only one in the family who knows anything about computers, and he'll be away for two weeks, I am quite desperate to solve this problem and get to my files.

Unfortunately, that being said, I have little (or only basic) knowledge of computers, but I will try to clarify on things if I have to.

When I turn on my computer, it immediately shows a "Secondary IDE Channel No 80 Conductor Cable Installed" error before continuing on with the boot up. However, once it reaches the black screen with the microsoft logo (and after maybe a minute or two), it jumps to an error screen (unfortunately, it is too fast for me to read everything) and then promptly restarts itself, repeating this cycle.

What I find odd, however, is that my computer was working perfectly fine before. In fact, I was just using it last night, and I shut it off normally as I always do. I only ran into this problem upon trying to boot it up this morning.

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much!

Answer:Secondary IDE Channel No 80 Conductor Cable Installed - Computer won't start up?

Replace that cable (they do tank from time to time) and be sure you get a newer 80 conductor cable instead of some older one you might have lying around that is the old 40 conductor cable.

I have been having a decent deal of problems with my boot up and in the least loading into windows. There were also periodic freezes at some points like watching videos or trying to run scans on my computer. after a long list of things i was trying to do, i detached my secondary hard drive to rotate in a dvd drive to reinstall windows. i hadn't yet changed over to booting off of the dvd, so i got to see that things were loading a lot faster w/o it. i am not sure if that means that just as with detaching some of my usb items earlier to fix a slow boot at bios screen... that there might be a problem with that drive, or some settings with it/windows.

somehow i still fee i may go ahead and reinstall windows anyway to have a clean start. i figured i would just post this here before i did maybe, so i can be prepared if there is something here that might just happen again. also, i feel dumb saying it( and this could very well be part of it) but a while ago i upgraded my video card to one that needed more power cables to power it. after that i didn't have the right connectors/enough cables to power my dvd drives, hard drives and everything else all at once. so i usually was only usually using the 2 hd's or a hd and a dvd drive at a time. i was fine with just periodically swapping between these situations, but after detaching my 2nd hd and seeing this difference i figured i should add all things about my hardware here.

thank you.

Answer:Computer problems possibly resolved by detaching secondary harddrive

What is your make/model of PC, and what is your operating system (i.e XP, W7, etc.) and service pack.

You can find this info at "Start"> Control Panel> the System headings

that's generic, but we don't know what you've got.

Ok so here's the story. My faithfull WRT54G crapped out on me after about 3-4 yrs of great use. So my dad had the bright idea of going out without consulting me and bought a netgear WPN824 (total piece of crap) after hours of troubleshooting I couldn't get the wireless to give me more than 8 Mbits. I gave up and ordered a WRT54GL from newegg and just set it up today.

Now, I only pay for 22 Mbits of bandwidth and I get this fine when I go through the new WRT54GL router (and do everything wireless). However, when I do a wired connection from directly from the modem to my laptop I get around 55-60 Mbit (I'm guessing comcast amped up my connection without telling me or something).

Here is my question. My computer is wireless G so I'm suppose to get AT LEAST 54 Mbits of wireless bandwidth outta it right? So why is it that when I plug the modem into the router and go wireless I only get 22-25 Mbits but when I go directly from the modem to my laptop I get around 55-60 Mbits? How can I get AT LEAST 54 Mbits that I'm suppose to get with a wireless G router (My laptop has a wireless G connection).

Answer:Some help with WRT54GL

Wow. I have the wpn824 and it works great. Granted im using it as an AP and not my main router.

Hello all,

I would like to setup VPN on WRT54GL. I am currently running "DD-WRT v24-sp2 (08/12/10) vpn, (SVN revision 14929)"

Is this the best/easiest route to go to set up VPN on my linksys?:

Because my WRT54GL doesn't quite give the kind of range I'm in need of at the moment, I wanted to get a D-Link DIR-655. However, I still need my WRT54GL to be connected so I can do the DSL PPPoE authentication with it.

I need it set up this way

DSL Modem -> WRT54GL w/ Tomato firmware, wireless radio disabled, and doing PPPoE authentication -> DIR-655 running every other router function

Is this possible? How do I go about doing this?

Answer:WRT54GL + DIR-655 together possible?

You just plug a cable from the WRT's LAN ports into one of the D-Link's LAN ports (not the WAN port), disable DHCP etc on the D-Link and you should be good to go. Google for using routers as AP's, eg. http://www.dslreports.com/faq/11233 if you need more specifics

Question: wireles on S10-3

Hi. I need help. I just got a couple of older lenovo S10-3 netbooks. sans operating systems. I've formated with a generic copy of windows 7 but have no idea as to which drivers to get. Lenovo would like me to buy their bundled windows 7 with the drivers for this machine for some $79. I cannot afford to do that. My issue is how to identify my wireless card and get the drivers myself. unfortunately I cannot find itThanks a bunch, John. If I go to the command prompt and enter getmac /v I get my lan is realtec RTL8102 with a physical address. Below that is listed: Bluetooth Network Bluetooth Device and a physical address as well. Under the transport name for both devices is stated " media disconnected". Is this Bluetooth device my wireless adaptor????? If not, how can I find it to get drivers. I get the feeling that there is probably a few other pieces of hardware in there that are not being recognized, so, how can I inventory everything that is in this netbook; I'd really like to get it up and running.

Hi there,
I've been having a hard time with my secondary hard drive showing up when I go into the "computer" option under my start menu. It does appear under Device Manager though.
I've reseated my cables numerous times, purchased and used new Sata cables, and I'm also running a new motherboard. I've also changed and disabled all my sleep options already.
I recently switched to using a Primary SSD for my programs to be installed on but ever since switching over to my SSD my HD no longer appears and I can't save anything to it.
Any advice? Thanks.

Answer:Secondary Hard Drive Disappears in 'Computer' Shows in Device Manager

You seem to need to assign the drive a path. Do this:
1. Open the windows search bar by pressing the windows logo in the bottom left corner of your screen
2. Search disk
3. Find the option labeled Create and Format Hard Disk Partitions
4. Select it
5. Find your hidden disk
6. Then assign your disk a path and it should appear in My Computer

Hope I helped!

Only been using the router for a couple of weeks now. My login/pw which worked over and over again is not letting me in, and the router seems to have returned to default settings (the network name is now linksys instead of the one I chose). It's still asking me for my login when I try to enter the setup but it just refreshes the user name/pw box... network is no longer under WEP, how can I get this thing right again?

Okay so I was stupid... I had flashed to HyperWRT Thibor and it worked fine, so I wanted to try out DD-WRT. I tried to flash, but it told me the upgrade failed and took me back to Thibor's CP-- figured I'd flash the NVRAM and try again, but as soon as I clicked "Flash NVRAM," the power light on the router started blinking and I couldn't connect to the control panel anymore.

No matter what I do (with combinations of unplugging it and holding the reset button) I can't get the power light to stop flashing. The good news is that the router is still assigning my computer an IP, and I can ping the router and get a response.

So after some research online, it seems like I just need to force new firmware onto the router. Two methods suggested for this are LinkSys' Auto Upgrade Utility, and the Windows tftp command. Unfortunately, the LinkSys AUU doesn't appear to be available for the WRT54GL, and I'm running Windows Vista on my only PC, which doesn't have tftp built into the shell (apprently).

So what's a guy to do? Anyone got advice?

Answer:Need Help with Bricked WRT54GL

There are various guides floating around that differ slightly based on the model you are using. I have done this on a WAP54G. I used Pumpkin TFTP to load the firmware back onto the access point.

I'm currently using a Linksys WRT54GL w/ two of these antennas:
http://www.hawkingtech.com/products/productlist.php?CatID=32&FamID=58&ProdID=214

in place of its stock antennas. I'm also running it w/ the latest tomato firmware.

We recently got a new laptop that has an 802.11n card. Also, all of our desktops have gigabit ethernet and we do tend to transfer large amounts of files b/w our computers.

I can get a Linksys WRT610N for $89. Should I jump on this deal? How does the WRT610N compare to my current router in performance and range?

Answer:WRT54GL to WRT610N?

A review on it here...almost 2 years ago
http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wire...ltaneous-dual-n-band-wireless-router-reviewed

Seems to handle higher loads quite well, almost 3x the throughput of the old wrt54gl, (135 megs versus 54 megs) and ability to handle higher concurrent connections also, thanks to 64 megs of RAM.

You should get a little increase in range...I did when I went from my wrt54gl to a wrt150n, in my 3 story house my laptop now registered 54 megs everywhere...with still decent speeds anywhere, prior to that it usually registered around the 20's...and if I was in a far corner I'd often get timeouts when surfing.

Question: Modem for WRT54GL

Hi,

I've just bought a WRT45GL so I can flash DD-WRT to it and use it at home. I did have an ADSL modem, but it has died since I last used it, so I'm looking for a new modem.

I'm guessing I probably want to connect the modem in bridge mode with the WRT45GL, so the modem must support that. I also need to get a modem that will be compatible with my ISP (TalkTalk UK, which is PPPoA/VC-MUX).

Any recommendations? Any other information you need, just tell me, and I'll get it for you.

Thanks!

Question: WRT54GL VPN issues

I've gotten my VPN server up and running on my Windows XP Pro machine. Within my network I'm able to connect to my VPN server with a VPN connection, however, once I am outside my home network, I cannot connect and seem to be getting error 721 while trying. I've forwarded necessary ports on the router's firewall and enabled PPTP passthrough. I'm running a WRT54GL Linksys router, and I keep on coming up with error 721. Where am I going wrong? I feel like it is something with the router not allowing a VPN server to be hosted behind it. Clients can connect out to an offsite VPN server, which is what the passthrough is for, but it doesn't work oppositely. Any help would be much appreciated guys.

Hey guys,

Here is the situation. I have the above mentioned router in my brother's bedroom, my computer uses the Edimax EW-7128g with a 5Dbi external antenna, there is about 100 ft and 2 walls (non-brick) between us. The wireless Tx rate constantly drops to 5-5.5Mbps no matter the settings, channel, etc... There are a lot of wireless networks in my area, but even channel 1 which is pretty much unused will yield the same result. If I go in and change settings in the router the rate will increase for a while, then it will drop again. At this point I am not sure what to do: either buy a better router, looking at a Buffalo, or a Netgear N, or just drill a hole through the wall to connect a Cat5 to the router.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Tx rate on WRT54GL with DD-WRT

Hmm. If there is a 802.11b device in the area and it attaches to your router, it will drop it down to 802.11b speeds (which is about 5.5Mbps). 802.11b is the lowest common denominator and doesn't play well with 802.11g. Try disabling 802.11b completely in your router.

i cannot find a v3/v4 of the WRT54G but i was told GL is the same and i can put the DD-WRT i was talking to my cousin and he told me to look at the comparison thing on tomshardware ( http://www.tomsnetworking.com/lans_routers/charts/index.html?chart=124 ) and it shows that the dgl-4300 support a lot more simultaneous connections. My question is ... after i add the dd-wrt thing to the GL will the connections increase or is the DGL-4300 just better overall just looking to spend around $100, GL is about $60 and DGL4300 is $100 AR at newegg or $99 at Frys.com

what would be the better choice?

Answer:WRT54GL or DGL-4300

The DGL-4300 is the better choice if you're looking for a performance soho router. The WRT54GL is the same as the dated WRT54Gv4. DD-WRT, while a great firmware package, cannot change the fact that the WRT54GL is still based on older and slower hardware.

A lot of caps in the title, I know. Before I start, keep in mind that I'm basically a newborn as far as networking is concerned.

My task is to setup a site-to-site, bridged VPN between two, eventually more, WRT54GL routers. I'm using DD-WRT firmware, v24-sp2 (10/10/09) vpn (SVN revision 13064), on both. The problem is that I'm having the darndest time getting it to work.

I've generated all the certs and keys I need for both the client and server and I'm confident that that's all fine and well, simple as it was. I've gone through multiple tutorials on the dd-wrt wiki to no avail, both with the GUI OpenVPN options and VPN configurations via startup scripts. I've also gotten a regular client bridged setup to work where I can ping back and forth and the like, but I don't believe that's what I need, correct? Since then, I've done a hard reset and gone back to trying to configure the VPN via the GUI in the OpenVPN daemon and OpenVPN client sections. Also, for the sake of tackling one problem at a time, I've turned off the firewall on each router completely.

Regardless, I still keep seeing the "destination host unreachable".

More information:The host behind the server is a Window XP machine. The host behind the client is an Ubuntu machine. The client is setup using the OpenVPN client option in Services>VPN with mostly the default information and the associated certs/keys. The server router is setup to use... Read more

I have just picked up a leaflet from PCWorld about setting up wireless networks. It states conect the modem router with a Cat 5 cable to a nearby computer. It does then go on to say connect to the wireless router from the wireless enabled PC well my question is this, The laptop (the wireless one) is the one with the broadband connection. Can I just connect to it with wires one time (to set IP addresses and security) and then wireless the rest of the time and still keep the same settings for that network on my laptop and then connect it to my desktop at the end of the process or do I have to have them both wired when I set up the network. Also how do you run the setup within Norton Internet Security?

Answer:How to Set UP a Wireles Network!

You need to connect once with a cable to set up the WiFi Router (from your laptop) then afterwards you can connect with WiFi and not have any cable connection to the WiFi Router.

We have NTL broadband and were told we needed a DSL router to get wireless braodband. Bought the Netgear 54 Mbps Wireless Router, connected this to our NTL set top box (downstairs) and ran the disc on our computer. It doesn't work but we don't know if we've bought the right thing. We don't need wireless internet to any other machine, just to our one PC. Does a router do this or is it just for a wired PCT to a laptop that can be wireless? Also do we need some sort of adapter in the PC to send a signal to the modem (which I presume is in the set top box, right?). Otherwise where does the signal come from?Currently we are still accessing it using a cable. Any help appreciated as we are both quite limited in our IT skills. Thanks.
