Solved: Laptop WiFi slow

Question: Solved: Laptop WiFi slow

Having done a broadband speed test with Speedtest.net on my NC6320 with a Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG card and my Netgear router, found my speed to be alot slower than thought.
The router incoming download speed is 3.07Mbps which is what we can expect from our exchange from BT line test. My laptop shows to be 1.02 Mbps. My son who also has a NC 6000 with a Intel 2200 his test shows to be 2.73Mbps. and this test is done when we are side by side or just mine switched on or even if I'm sat alongside the router. Both are running XP Pro with SP3.

The registry has been modified/added for the TcpWindowSize @ 64240. Latest driver direct from Intel for the wifi card. The Wireless Network Connection shows 54Mps with a Good/Excellent signal and configured for 802.11 b&g, cannot set for 'g' only as no choice in drop list.

Any tips of how to increase my speeds.

Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

All of a sudden the wifi on my laptop has been really slow lately. I remember before I could stream 720p videos without any buffer on Youtube. Now I'm lucky if I can somewhat stream a 340p without the occasional stutters/buffers. Sometimes I would be getting 39 Mbps or 52 Mbps (if I'm really lucky) , but most of the times I would get either 26-19 Mbps. On all my other devices (iPod, Family Desktop, iPhone) the internet speed seems just fine as they can stream in 720p and browse without any network problems. Also I am upstairs with the router downstairs in the family room.

My results from Speedtest.net - 25 ms, 2.56 Mbps Download Speed, 0.38 Mbps Upload Speed.

This result is VERY UNSTABLE, sometimes I couldn't even get 1 Mbps download speed (more like 0.8). I would also have like 50 ms. I am running Windows 8 Pro with a Realtek RTL8188CE Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC on a Toshiba Satellite Laptop.
DHCP is enabled. IPv6 is not. I made sure everything was updated using Windows Update. And I'm only using the windows defender firewall which I made wasn't blocking anything by disabling it and seeing if it cleared up any problems - which it did not, the same thing happened.

Please help me with this issue, its very annoying and frustrating to have a really slow wifi at times and really good at other times.

My fiance and I are in the same room as the wireless router. My computer is hooked up to the ethernet itself, no problem there. Our roommate is in another part of the house (far away from the router), and he says he's getting insanely fast internet. My fiance's laptop (which is the Compaq F700 duo-core laptop running Vista) was working great for a week or so at this house. Then suddenly one day she comes home from work, and her internet is running like it's hooked up to 28.8k. If she hooks up to the ethernet, the connection on her computer is amazing.
So...
- Roommate's integrated Wifi is working GREAT from far away from the wireless router
- Problem computer is ten feet from the router itself and getting terrible speed
- Definitely connected to our network (with a unique name)

So as far as I can tell, the problem is not our provider, not our router, and not range. It seems to lie solely with the way the wireless software (or possibly hardware) is set up.

No one changed any settings before this happened, but the computer is set up to update automatically.

If anyone has any input that could help, we would be incredibly grateful. We're at the end of our ropes on this one.

hello.

i have cable internet that is connected to a belkin wireless router. one computer gets slow internet access when connected to this. multiple other computers get better speed. the one affected computer gets fast speeds when accessing the internet at other locations, like a friend's house. also, the affected computer gets fast speeds when connected to the router by a cable.

so the problem seems to be very specific to the connection between these specific devices.

the laptop in question is a thinkpad e420 running windows 7.

thank you in advance for any solutions or suggestions you might have.

I've read through hundreds of posts trying to figure out my issue. Unfortunately, I've been unsuccessful.

Here's the issue, I was given a new laptop for work and it connects fine to our secure wireless network at the office, but when I brought it home it will not connect to my wireless network at home.

When I try to connect to my network at home the wireless manager sits and spins saying "trying to acquire network address". I have 2 iPhones, 1 eMachine and 1 Macbook connected to my network working fine and dandy. However, the HP laptop from work simply won't connect unless wired.

I have tried the following:
1. Uninstalled and reinstalled the driver.
2. Power Cycled my Router
3. Power Cycled my entire network
4. WinsockXPFix tool

I'm completely at a loss here. No idea what to do to fix this. I'm running Windows XP and have a 2Wire router.

I appreciate any advice anyone can give me to help solve this annoyance.

I am experiencing really slow wifi on my laptop. I have the Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6235 wifi card in this laptop and running Windows 7 64bit.

When I am close to the router I have no problem, but when about 12 meters away at my desk, my internet speed drops to snail pace even though I have 4/5 bar wifi signal. I have an HTC One, Google Nexus 7, another laptop all working absolutely fine from the same location

I have updated to the latest drivers, I have ran a deep virus scan, I have changed the Wifi channels on the router, and currently using channel 1. Nothing has had any effect. I'm looking for some ideas. Can anyone help?

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with that see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

Also show ...

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I just bought a Samsung Series 7 laptop. Really happy with it except one thing...which is pretty major I think!
It connects to my WiFi router fine, but in my bedroom, it is really slow. Works much better in other rooms in the house which are closer to the router. My old Laptop (a Sony) works fine on WiFi in the bedroom...so I think its not the WiFi signal range that is a problem.
Anyone have an ideas how I can improve the speed of the connection? I don't really want to be only using the laptop in the front room! Will Changing the channel on the router help?
Let me know if you need more info..sorry Im not very technical so keep your replies simple :)

Answer:Slow WiFi on new Laptop

Last month I also bought one of these laptops and had similar issues; if the laptop was more than a few feet away from the router the connection dropped and the laptop reported no networks within range. Despite many hours in trying to resolve the issue to no effect I contacted Samsung helpline and they told me to take it back for a replacement as there was a fault with the laptop. I also carried out some research and this is a well known problem with this series; I took it back and swapped it over for a HP Pavilion g6 which is absolutely fine.
Hope this helps.

Hello everyone,
I?m looking for help on an issue i have at home with my laptop starting up. I?m suspecting that my router is the problem.

I have a laptop from work a HP ProBook 4540s. At work it starts up fine, but at home it takes a quite a few minutes before i get the windows log-in screen and another while before my desktop is ready. AFter that, even starting up IE takes seconds more to load at home then at work.

So i found a thread about the same problem here: http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/74332-slow-connecting-wifi-network-start-up.html and thought i might try looking here for a solution.
I just dont want to mess up the settings that make my laptop function good at work.

Thank you already!!!

Here goes:
1. It is a wireless problem
2. My provider is UPC (Netherlands)
3. I?m using a cable connection
4. My modem is a D-Link DIR-655

My LAN speed is usually around 5100 via my SpeedTouch router ST585v6. When I am using my Laptop, an HP Pavilion dv6 running Windows 7 with an AMD quad Core cpu, not the fastest of computers!, I seem to get WIFi speeds as low as 1700 whilst at other times can get 5000.
The Router is only about 6 feet away from the Laptop! Is the speed drop a "computer problem" or a router one? If I connect the Laptop to the LAN the speed will always be at about 5100. My desktop computer is connected to the LAN and has a speed of 5100.
I have the usual security set on the Router.
Does anyone have any thoughts?

Is your wifi adapter up to date?
It could be due to interference- do you have a cordless phone, for example, near? Have you tried changing the wireless channel on the router? Try 1, 6 or 11.

Hello-

I just bought an alienware M18x, and set it up a few days ago. To my knowledge, all of the drivers are up to date. Yet my internet is still slow (about half the time). I run a speed test, and it says my download speed is 0 mbps for a few moments, then it skyrockets and averages out to about 8. The upload speed is more consistent, but only at 0.3 mbps. I have centurylink at up to 12, and they've told me that the connection itself is fine. Encryption type is set to TKIP, as this helped before (though it's slow regardless). I can post my dxdiag if necessary. Any ideas?

Answer:Wifi Internet to my new laptop is slow

do you have other PCs on the router and do they work OK ?
all of the drivers are up to date.Click to expand...

sometimes you need to actually update the driver by downloading the driver and installing , rather than just doing an update

also try

Uninstall and allow windows to re-install the adapter and Driver
I would goto device manager and right click on the adapter and uninstall/remove and then restart the PC and let windows re-detect the hardware and reinstall the driver

Hi all, hopefully you can help. I have an interesting issue I haven't been able to figure out. I have an Airlink 101 AR675W router with the latest firmware installed which is connected my leased cable modem. There is a variety of devices using the network here including an iPad, two Android phones, an HP netbook, an HP printer, an HP laptop, a PS3, etc. Of all these devices, only the PS3 is hard wired to the router, the rest all use Wifi. Only the HP laptop has issues, and I can't sort it out.

The laptop with the issue is less than 6 months old, shows link speed to the router of ~240-300 mbps, but web page loading, downloads, etc are intermittently slow. When it's "acting up", speed test sites show ~1.5 mbps download, yet 3+ mbps upload still. When it's not "acting up", the same sites show 20+ mbps download with 3+ mbps upload. The interesting thing to me is that even when the laptop is running slow, ALL the other devices run normally and are plenty fast at 20+ mbps. Connecting directly with an ethernet cable gives proper speeds. I have also tried rebooting all devices (modem, router, laptop) with no change.

The drivers are all up to date on the laptop, the firmware on the router is up to date, etc. Restarting the laptop as a "clean boot" makes no difference for wireless speeds, nor does safe mode with networking. I have tried temporarily disabling all firewalls with no change also. There are no devices that I have been able... Read more

Ok, I have an Acer Aspire 4730Z laptop. I run the internet through my wifi, the service is provided by the apartment complex to everyone. It is an incredibly strong signal for the whole building, and I am right beneath the source so I have always had just an amazing speed on my internet.

The other day, while chatting on Facebook of all places, something happened (what I do not know) and the Firefox crashed. Since that moment the internet has been chugging. And I mean CHUGGING! It takes almost 2min just to load a page. (this is not consistent however some pages load faster) Downloading speeds have all but stopped (I don't know how to check for just how fast they are going) I can't even load up Youtube videos now its so slow.

forgot to add my stats here
Acer Aspire 4730Z
250gbhdd
dual core t3400
2.16 dual core intel processor
802.11b/g/draft-N WLAN

I tried several fixes for the problem, but being a noob I think I screwed it up worse because its even slower than before.

first I used Uniblue registry cleaner and speed upper thing. They just screwed up my computer even worse and it was taking forever just to open a file folder let along load a webpage. I did a system restore to undue that damage.

I tried resetting the autotuning. That did not work I even did an ipconfig/renew release thing. That almost did me in. I finally got the internet running again. still slow.

Hi, the wi-fi on my laptop has suddenly become very slow (5mbps) and it usually disconnects every 5 minutes and I have to wait another 5 minutes for it to reconnect.

This has only started happening the last 10 days or so.

The wi-fi on my android phone which is connected to the same router runs perfectly with quite high speeds achieved. 50mbps

I have a computer that is wired via ethernet and that achieves speeds of 70mbps.

I have tried reinstalling the driver but nothing happens. If I try 'updating' the driver Windows just says it's the best driver installed.

I have tried reinstalling Windows 10 by reseting it. It has the latest updates.

Is it possible my wi-fi adapter hardware is failing? I thought it would either work or not if it was the hardware.

I have no idea how to solve this problem and it basically means I can't use my laptop as I have to keep waiting for it to reconnect after it disconnects every 5 minutes.

I have also 'reset' the router incase it was a problem with that but was unsuccessful.

I hope someone can help me with a miracle solution.

I'm wondering if I should got back to Windows 7 but I've had Windows 10 for a good few months now and the adapter has always been fine. I'm just worried a latest update has affected it somehow.

Oh I can also use my phone via USB tethering and I get good speeds doing that but I don't have a lot of data so it's not a viable solution.

Hiya. For a while I've been experiencing that my download and upload speeds seem to vary wildly while on my computer, however they always seem to be MUCH lower than on my laptop. When using speedtest.net my laptop tends to average around 25 mbps downloading and 15 mbps uploading. Occasionally my desktop will peak and be slightly better (best I've seen today is 37.55 mbps and 19.03 mbps uploading) but the grand majority of the time it seems to hover at around 5 mbps download and 1 or 2 mbps upload. I don't understand why this is. Things I have tried:
Updating to Windows 10 on desktop (not that I am on my laptop)
Updating the drivers for my TRENDnet 300Mbps Dual Band Wireless N USB Adapter wireless adapter (tried, no need as they're up to date)
Turning off power saving mode (I don't know why this was enabled on a desktop but it was)
Turning off the windows option to "disconnect this device to save power"
Cleaning in the inside of my desktop tower
Changing my IPv4 DNS server values
And I have also tried running a full virus scan, malware scan and uninstalling every program I installed in the last month

And I know it is almost certainly not interference due to the fact that my laptop sits directly above my PC tower, both a whole floor away from the router, and the laptop does okay. For the sake of checking I have tried moving the laptop to a different room but that is not the cause of the problem. In addition to the speedtest.net results ... Read more

Answer:My laptop the only computer having slow wifi issues?

This seems to be an issue with your router.

Try tuning off your computer. Unplug your modem and router wait a minute or so.

Plug in the modem and router wait till all lights stabilize.

Startup your computer and see how your connection is then.
Is your wifi though the router encrypted with WEP or WPA? If not someone outside can be stealing your connection causing slow speeds.

I just bought this laptop about a month and a half ago, and a few weeks ago I noticed the Wifi is slow when my laptop is not plugged in. I looked up the issue and changed my power saver settings so that the wifi would have high performance even when not plugged in to the power source. This seemed to work for a couple days, but now it runs slow again when not plugged in. I went back into the settings to make sure they didn't revert to default, but everything is as I changed it and the problem persists. My internet is SUPER slow when my laptop is not plugged in and works perfectly fine when it is plugged in. I have been unable to find anyone with a similar issue and there are no other settings that pertain to my internet use that I can change to affect any outcome. Is anyone else having similar issues? Is there a fix for this? I don't like the idea of having to keep my laptop plugged in all the time for internet use. That kind of defeats the purpose of having  a portable computer.

I purchased an HP laptop today (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10107496&catid=)
and everything is running smoothly on it with no problems, except for the wireless internet. I usually get a max of around 120kbs on an average download on my old XP, but on my new Vista im getting 30kbs max. I found a few suggestions online and disabled my firewall, uninstalled the trial norton antivirus and tried to install an old driver, but it barely improved at all.

It has an Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN wireless card. Any suggestions on improving the speed? Heres what i got when i ran ipconfig /all:

Hello,
I have a 2011 Asus k53sv laptop with an i7 processor and 8 gigs of ram. I recently upgraded my wifi card because I had an old centrino 100-n card. I upgraded to an intel 7260ac in order to get better speeds in general. Currently my ISP is giving me 100mgbs download and 20 mgb upload. On my girlfriends newer laptop she is getting around 75 mgb download on speedtest.net, however, when I try speedtest on the same network using my laptop, I max out at 20 mgbs. These tests are done one right after another so bandwidth issues aren't the problem. I have all of the correct drivers for this card installed so I don't think that is the issue either. Any ideas on how to fix this on my laptop?
Thanks in advance!

Just received my new laptop last week.  Over the course of the week, i noticed slow website loading, a 2.2mb fil taking 2 mins to download.  I went to speedtest.net and shocked to see the download speeds from .09mb - 5.43mb.  I have a 110MB down, 40MB up connection.  So i tested this with my other laptop and getting close to 30MB's better and expected.  I called Lenovo's tech suport they remoted into my machine and changed some configs in the advanced settings window of my adapter (Intel Wireless-N 7260).  Reboot, not any better. Then they had me change the channel on my router from Auto to channel 9.  Rebooted the router and tested again and now I am getting between 12-21mb and 7mb up.  After we disconnected thinking everything was good now my dell latptop now is registering at 66-69MB down and 38-41mb up.  So the channel change made everything faster but now I am left wondering what is wrong with my new Lenovo U530, specs says it up to a 300mb connection, and mind you when you check the connection in networking and shaing, it says its connected at 144mbps... what gives. I updated the BIOS on the machine, and even downloaded the new prowireless software from intels site but still getting 12mb-20mb download.  Is anyone else having this eperience or had it and know the fix? Any suggestions are appreciated, thanks in advanced. John

Hi, recently the wifi on my laptop has been extremely slow and disconnects quite often (still shows as connected but says no internet) however the same wifi on my phone experiences no such issues. I was considering reinstalling windows to see if that fixes it but I'd rather avoid having to do that.
My wifi package is 100mb/s but on my laptop it ranges from a few mb to 20 or so if I'm lucky, is there any way to fix this without reinstalling windows & would that even solve the issue?
Thanks

So this has been going on for a few months. I have an HP DV6-7029wm laptop that will only get around 3.3Mbps over wifi. I have Uverse with the 20Mbps plan. Now here is what I have tried and nothing has fixed it.

Had Win 8.1 - Did fresh install to Win 7
Have tried 3 different versions of the Atheros 9485 Chipset Driver
Have swapped wifi adapters from daughters laptop
Disabled wifi security
Turned off Windows Firewall
AT&T swapped out my old gateway for the newest one they have

Now thinking it might be issues between my laptop and uverse gateway, I setup a Hotspot on my Galaxy S5 and used my phones LTE connection and was still only getting around 3.3Mbps. Now my phone will pull upwards of 25Mbps on LTE and the full 20 on my UVerse wifi.

Now the one that confuses me is I have a Cisco USB wifi adapter that I tried. And even with the USB adapter Im still only getting 3.3Mbps.

Any Ideas?

I am having real problems with my laptop since i had a virus last week. Explorer is running really slow, about 170-200kbs when i used speedtest.net.It is connected wireless using a belkin router and have never had any problems before. My main PC is fine and running at 8MEG+ . Explorer is taking ages to load up and anything with pics takes an age. Last week i removed a trojan virus from the laptop using System Restore then Malwarebytes, super antispyware etc.I use an rkill programme too. I cant even get into safe mode by pressing F8 when it is booting up.

Hi there,

I have just changed my router ( to a TP-Link TD-W9980 ADSL2+/VDSL2 router).
Talktalk is my ISP, and I had to swap out their rubbish Huawei router.

I have an issue on my work laptop which is running via my work VPN

Strangely a minute or so after I connect to my work VPN the Wifi icon in the taskbar comes up with an exclamation mark and I get "No Internet" in my 'Network and Sharing Centre' panel.
Despite this showing no Internet - I can surf and use the internet. Odd.

I get this if I connect to either 5Mhz or 2.4MHz bands on the router.
I have tried resetting the adapter, rebooting laptop etc.
I have rebooted the router.
In case this was a DNS issue I have changed the router to use the google Nameservers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4).
The laptop is set to get DNS from the router - as it always has. - according to the networks details panel - it is picking up the google DNS settings from the router OK.
So I can surf OK, but its not that quick.

Why is this working like this?

Cheers

I just re-installed the OS (Windows 7 64bit) on my Folio 9470m.  The WiFi is so sluggish, it is un-usable.  When I run a speedtest.net with a wired connection, I get 25mbps.  When I run the test with WiFi, it starts out at 25mbps, but drops quickly until the test times out before it gets to 100%. -The wireless device is Intel(R) Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6235.  The driver version is 15.17.0.1.-I had just obtained the laptop and didn't use it much before I re-installed the OS.  I believe the WiFi was fine before I re-installed the OS, but I'm not 100% sure. I'm hoping that this is something simple that I can fix.  Any ideas? Thanks,Mark

Answer:Laptop WiFi extremly slow and stops working

Drivers are about the only issue that can be fixed without replacing the card. Here is the driver download page: http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=5271102&swItemId=ob_146625_1&swEnvOid=406... Note the instruction to remove prior drivers first. I would uninstall the wireless from device manager, use advasnced uninstall and remove the existing driver from the system and then reload the driver. Download the new driver and keep track of it as you uninstall since obviously once you uninstall you will not have wireless to download the driver with. If this does not work we need to think about replacement of the card. Have you otherwise installed the chipset and other drivers?

Question: [SOLVED] slow wifi

OH! I WISH that had solved my problem! I am using Windows 7 on the other desktop and that's the one I'm using now to post because I can't get anything to work right with the Windows 8 machine. I run all of the machines in my house WiFi. The router is set to AES+TKIP and all the machines were set to AES. Based on the last post, I changed the Windows 8 machine to TKIP. No change (for me), sadly.

Here's the thing. The signal into the house is great. I can say that because the other computers/smartphones/tablets/TV are all testing and working fine. What's different is Windows 8 on this one computer. It isn't interacting right with the router. I can't even run a normal speedtest, but from the cmd prompt, when I ping a site, it's losing 25-50% of the packets with an avg RT speed of 140ms. I guess maybe the RT speed isn't so bad, it's the fact that's losing packets. I don't know. I just know it used to work and now it's unusable.

The computer keeps forgetting to look for the router and then when it finds it, the signal to the router is great, but there's no internet (which isn't true as I'm using it on other computers). Once or twice it has said "Limited Connection."

Any ideas?

Answer:[SOLVED] slow wifi

Even though it appears you're having the same problem, please start a new thread when you have a new issue. It's very difficult to keep two problems straight and who's working on what in a single thread.

I've created a new thread for your issue here.

Lets take a peek at your network environment:

First:

Power Cycle everything . . Turn off the Modem, router and all pc's . . turn on the Modem and wait a few minutes for the lights to stabilize . . then turn on the router, then one pc at a time. See if you connect to the internet.

Then:

Remove all the stored wireless network profiles and search for the network again.

How to Remove Stored Wireless Network Profiles for XP, Vista, and Windows 7

Then: check your browser's settings, remove any proxy settings if found here's how.

Then:

with the pc connected to the router, Click on Start . . Run . . type CMD

At the > prompt type type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL and press enter.

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Come back here and Paste the results in a message.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB drive, or a CD-R disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

then please Download and run this Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector, click the Networks link on the upper... Read more

Hey,
I can't get my head around this: on my desktop were internet has always been working fine has started to be really really slow (I can't navegate). I have tried repairing the network, deleting temp's, restarting the router, changing my MAC... nothing seems to do the trick. I suspect something is blocking my system. I have xp SP3 on my desktop and internet runs flawlessly on linux on my portable. I'm really close on changing OS forever (it's a pity I'm a gamer).

My desktop's (winxp home sp3) internet connection, connected via cable to our router, is very slow at the moment, to the extent where it downloads only kbs per minute. I've tried:
different browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Opera... even IE)
disabling/removing/reinstalling firewall (PC tools plus), antivirus (avast) and program startup blocker (gogo data toolbar)
checking for spy/malware (Spybot S&D)
renewing ip address
system restore to earlier point
uninstall network adapter drivers/reboot install
different cable to router
with no success.

However my gf's laptop pc connecting via wifi to the same router has connectivity as usual.

Here are all the details I can think to provide - any suggestions to fix the problem, up to and including full XP reinstall, are welcome.

Please give detailed instruction - I'm familiar enough with XP and PCs in general, but lack detailed knowledge in this area.

Answer:XP: very slow internet for desktop via wire, as normal on laptop via wifi - help?

I don't see how the gf laptop is fine on WiFi when you have latency from the router unless she's on a totally different WiFi network, check the name of the router she's on, also do a speed test without the router and see if you still get kb instead of mbps,

This can be a number of things, how old is your router, if you have other WiFi devices hook them up to your router test the speed, hardware the gf laptop to the router see if its still fine. If it turns out to be your pc you may have a bad nic or need to reset something in the operating system.

My laptop shuts down suddenly and I think it is either because of static electricity, cooling fan not working and unit shuts down because of over heating or both. In addition this laptop has terrible wifi reception. I have an old Dell Inspirion unit with Windows XP that still works and has great wifi reception. Anyway for the static electricity I think the problem is in the circuit between the ground connection between the computer (outside cylinder of male pin plug) pin and the electric ground pin of the plug to the wall receptacle. With the Dell laptop I get 0 resistance (using ohmmeter) across them. But with the HP I get anout 1 ohm and the resistance is in the transformer. With regards the overheating I used a vacuum cleaner with wand attachment to try to suck out dirt/lint through the fan discharge. Also I added rubber bump pads (sticking them with contact cement) to lift the bottom up higher to make it easier for cooling air to enter the bottom air intakes.  I  did not want to open up the unit. I saw how complicated it is from YouTube videos. I heard Dell laptops are easier to get into. The CD/DVD cover on the laptop will not open. I have to insert a wire through the hole near the button to open it. Alsio this laptop is super slow yet it has a i7-4710HQ CPU! HP this laptop sucks!

guys

I've a samsung laptop thats about 3 years old. its running Windows 7 home premium with 6GB Ram and an i3-2350 (2.3GHz) cpu

a while ago it was dog slow, taking 20 minutes for the Wifi to connect, when connected webpages would hang so i ran a bunch of AV scans and cleaned up what was found. updated the drivers and so on but still no luck. so i rebuilt it using the recovery partition to factory spec. it was running fine for a while

Now whats happening is any time uTorrent opens it hangs the laptop, thought it was maybe the windows Firewall so disabled that and it was no better. Switched to Deluge and that ran fine for a few days and again started acting up. but even outside the moral/legal/ethical aspects of using a torrent app the WiFi still takes minutes to connect, when the laptop boots it takes a good 5-10 minutes to be usable. once its running its fine until a torrent app are opened or theres more than 6 browser pages opened and then it becomes unresponsive again.

Ran an Avira AV scan and it came back clean, checked with Malwarebytes and that came back clean also.

any recpommendatiosn on where to start looking for a cause and resolution for this?

But when I turn off the desktop, the wifi has big drop in speed for a few mins and go back up again. It continues to do that every 10-15 min. This only happens when I have the desktop off. Hey guys,

Recently, I decided to downgrade my U310 from Windows 8 to Windows 7. I did the downgrading just fine and im currently running windows 7 however there are some problems im encountering. I downloaded all the drivers from the website and currently downloading all the windows updates but there is a problem with the wifi it seems. The wifi is soo slow and keeps disconnecting and such. In windows 8, wifi was much faster and didn't stop working as often. I downloaded the proper driver and it shows up in my device manager as well as detects my wifi network but it doesn't run smoothly.
I am currently using a usb wifi adapter which is doing the job but i want to be able to use my internal wifi. Any suggestions?
My device manager only shows 2 unknown devices with question marks beside them which i dont know what they are but other than that , all my other drivers are installed fine.

Also, just a side question, what do i download to show animations for pressing the function buttons to show that i decrease/increase volume or brightness. thanks

Without luck I have tried:Updating the driver, updating the BIOS, tried to change channel in modem, i tried to set AUTO under wireless settings, i have tried to have the charger in and whitout, I have tried with wireless-usb-card, One interesting fact, when i sit very close to the modem, the speed becomes good and stable. The speed is also good on different network.  Also with Cabel it seemed good. My Sony Vaio laptop is experiencing slow internet speed even though the signal level shows as excellent. This is only when using it upstairs, where it is normally used. In the same room as the router it is fine. This has only just starting happening and it was OK anywhere in the house until a couple of days ago. To make it even more confusing my wife's notebook and my iphone work fine on the network in the bedroom. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have done multiple speedtest from www.speedtest.net over the past 3 days and when I am directly connected to my modem, my download speed is roughly 35 MBPS however, when I am on wifi (literally 5 feet from the router) my download speed is roughly 20 MBPS. I have the Belkin F5D8236-4 router found here http://www.engadget.com/products/belkin/f5d8236-4/.

Is this slowdown of speed due to my router/interference or what?

Hello, I recently purchased a 2017 Spectre 15-bl075nr. Whenever I connect the device with Miracast to a TV, my wifi performance drops from 150Mbs to <3Mbs. The laptop has an Intel AC 8265 and I'm running W10 Creator's Update. I contacted Intel and they reviewed results from their SSU utility but could not find anything causing the problem. I'm pretty sure it's not a problem with my TV or Router because I'm able to maintain a max wifi speed when I connect with a Dell XPS18 laptop and with a Samsung Note 5. The only other problem I've had is that often when I wake the laptop up from sleep mode, it starts a disk checking activity, but not sure if that's related. I've had the laptop for <30 days so it's still in the return window, just not sure if it's a defect or system issue. Thanks

This is wireless service, and the laptop is within 4 feet of the router. I have Comcast service on my desktop, and my "connected" normal d/l speed is ~30 MBPS, with ~5 MBPS u/l. Don't know what else to do. I have connected the laptop directly to the modem, and get 30 MBPS speed, so there is something I'm missing in the wireless router setup.

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If your only email accounts are free (Hotmail, gmail, etc.) try this direct link. If you need help with a screen shot see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 8 or 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

I bought a TP-Link TL-WR84N last week. I have a 50ft Ethernet cable connecting my ISP provided modem/router to the TP-Link router. The wired connection from the TP-Link to my computer is good (90mbps). However, the WiFi download speed is super slow (1.8mbps).
The router's firmware is up-to-date. (3.14.4 Build 131129 Rel.39318n)
The main reason I'm setting this up is for a stable Chromecast connection.

Any suggestions to improve the WiFi speed?

Do the following:

1)Uninstall the Intel Wifi Software . restart computer/laptop.

Just boosted my ISP BBand speed from 10MB to 30MB... the wired pc and the wifi laptop have shown great improvement (approx 40MB), however the wifi desktop is still slow. I have replaced the adapter to a new up-to-date one, (USB) and alothough it is showing small improvement it is still restricting to approx 15MB.

You should run this tunnel adaptor remover first. Too many of these indicates a driver problem and it will also ruin your connection if there are too many of those tunnel adaptors. This problem happens all the time. Click and save the zip file, then run the zip file and reboot.

You might also considering using a different driver for this network adaptor. If the problem happens again it may help to remove the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter using device manager as it's known to cause connection problems such as you seem to be having.

Just use Tunnel Adapter – Microsoft 6to4 adapter Remover

Hi. I want to have a wireless connection with my laptop, I have a desktop computer with a Belkin router. I have tried uninstalling drivers in my laptop and doing several stuff that I've found on the internet but nothing has worked so far. My laptop had Windows Vista installed but it supported XP, so I installed XP because I wanted to have more free memory for my applications.
I formatted my hard drive yesterday and could make a regular broadband connection that requires username and password. I have internet with my laptop too, but the problem is the wireless connection.

Good morning.

My company provides free WiFi access with minimum security (WEP) for phones, laptops, etc. It has worked well for a couple of years. IT has made some hardware changes/moves which has put my office outside the wireless access point parameters in the building. I have tried connecting with both a Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 laptop, both of which have a/b/g/n (for sure, n) wireless adapter cards.

Question: Is there any hardware or software configuration to extend the signal of my laptop's wireless adapter in order to connect or is that option only available with wifi extenders on the wireless network itself?

Thanks in advance. Larry.

Hi, I have a Toshiba Satellite L500 laptop that at home works great.

The problem starts when I go to other locations that i want to connect to. It won't connect and has been like this since I bought the laptop!

Without fail it will NOT connect.

Tonite, I plugged in my Mom's new Router, when I tried to login to the router - nothing. In Wireless connections available it says automatically store p/w and Connect.. when I click on connect it doesn;t even ask me for a password!

Change Adapter settings: Network connections (two of them) say not connected)

Anyone be able to help?

I have removed from Dev Manager the 3 network items listed and restarted the Laptop, Still no go!

I'm at my mom's house for the holidays and I can't seem to browse the Internet properly. I can access google and complete searches, but I can't follow any of the links or any urls. The router page doesnt time out, but only shows that it's trying to load pictures and I can't get to any of the configs. Also, I can successfully ping every site I can think of. Hamachi is also working and I can browse remote files.

Is this issue somehow DNS related?

Answer:Solved: Laptop wifi issues

unlikely DNS as you can get to google
and you can ping every site

maybe a firewall blocking
how are you connected by wireless - try connecting with a cable to the router

what security suite do you have or every had on the PC

I have an HP Windows 8 laptop that used to have fast internet. But for a while now, it's only had 2-3, or sometimes even 1 bar. I am using my neighbors internet right now. My sister also has a windows 8 laptop, and she uses the same internet I do. But she has great internet, mostly full bars. I know my laptop is capable of having fast speed too, I just don't know how. I think there is a setting or program stopping it from having better connects. I just want to know if there is a way fix the problem without messing with the modem. One last thing, when the laptop first starts up, the internet is at full bars about 2 seconds, then goes down to about two. Any way I can fix this issue?

First off, I'll admit that my knowledge of networking is pretty limited, though I'm competent with computer stuff in general. I just got a new laptop, a Gateway NV78 with Win7 Home Premium, but I'm having troubles with download speeds. While another, older, laptop (vista) in the same place can get ~150 kilobytes/s, this one can get at most 60. Often, it loses internet connectivity altogether, or goes down to bytes/second.

When I run the windows diagnostic, it sometimes says that it resolved something like "this computer doesn't have a valid ip configuration." Additionally, a dialog will occasionally appear telling me that another computer on the network has a duplicate ip (which I assume is because Windows constantly changes it. Sometimes, I am told that my computer is correctly configured but the DNS is unreachable. Usually, when I reset my connection or my adapter, my speed is decent at first, then gets worse as time goes on. Occasionally it will say "Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (DNS server) is not responding." Recently, I am unable to connect for more than a minute at a time.

My network adapter is an Intel Wifi Link 5100 agn. I have the latest driver installed. The Linksys BEFW11s4 router is older, but that doesn't seem to affect things on the Vista laptop.

Please help!

I just moved into an apartment with preexisting wifi and I haven't been able to get my new Lenovo laptop to connect. I'm going a little mental. My computer finds and connects to other wifi networks, but the apartment's wifi doesn't show up as an option. I don't think the router is the problem. My roommates are connected and it works fine for them, but they had it set-up a long time ago and can't help me out. I've also tried the restart router thing and it didn't make a difference. I'm assuming the problem is that someone (probably the person who used to have my room) set network to invisible. I've manually entered the information to connect to the hidden network, and my computer recognizes that the network exists. A window appears that says something like, "This network already exists, would you like to connect to it?" When I click to connect the window goes away, but that's it. The network still doesn't appear as an option and I still don't have internet. If anyone has any ideas that would be really helpful!

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

Hello there,

We have a WRT300N Linksys router (updated firmware) with 2 very recent laptops (Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T9600 2.8GHz 3GB RAM 32-bit running Windows 7 - fully updated) connected to our wireless network.

Last week, everything was fine.

Two days ago, the internet connection for my laptop became intermittently VERY slow.
The internet service we have is for 30 mbps. I did a speed test but didn't have enough "juice" to finish the test. Even if I load google.com, the page would time out or say that the server is down. Downloading of email is also intermittently VERY slow. I am unable to play any online games as my connection is not fast enough...

The other laptop works perfectly fine.

I scanned for viruses using Avira, for malware using MalwareBytes and ran diagnostic tests for my wireless card. All seems fine. I called my ISP and they said that all is fine on their side.

We tried unplugging the router/modem and rebooting the computer - no change.
I downloaded Xirrus WiFi Monitor and have enclosed the screenshot as well as my IP config /all.

In my device manager I have the following under Network Adapters (all updated):
1) Intel 82567LF Gigabit Network Connection
2) Intel WiFi Link 5300 AGN
3) Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter

My friend says it could be because of Second Life and all the java plugins it requires I could have a problem.

What could this be? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

I have a Vista - HP Pavalion dx6650us/Vista laptop which prints when directly pluged into my HP4000n printer (usb to parallel cable). But can't print using WiFi, yet I can access the internet and other resources, and can ping the Jet direct interface on the printer which is 192.168.1.25 - which is an excluded IP on the Linksys WRT54G wireless router.

Interestingly enough, my XP - Gateway - GT4010 prints just fine using CAT5 to the router, and the printer is plugged int to the router via CAT 5 also. The HP4000n has a jet direct card which has been upgraded using HP Jet Admin to the latest firmware. The WiFi - NIC on the Laptop has been upgraded to the latest driver, and the WRT54G router has been upgraded as well. The XP desktop can print over CAT 5 through the router to the HP4000n just fine. Yet when I print with the HP Pavalion dx6650us/Vista laptop - it fails. Just trying to print a test page it will show its printing - then fail after a minute.

Both the laptop and the desktop are configured to use IP printing to the 192.168.1.25 - the XP machine works fine, and the Vista works fine as long as its plugged in using USB - but when trying to print using WiFi it doesn't work.

ONE TWIST to this whole thing. Its worked in the past. As for changes? The only thing I can guess is something from windows update has hosed up the Vista machine. Because after the WiFi NIC driver was updated on the laptop, and the firmware was updated on the Router, and the firmware update... Read more

Hi everyone this is my first post. A couple weeks ago my HP laptop stopped working. It would not boot and I had to put in the recovery discs to get it working again. Before this the laptop had connected fine to my home wifi secured with WPA2-PSK[AES]. After this problem tho it refuses to connect while it is secured. When not secure it functions fine and I am currently using it to type this post. I would have no problem continuing to use the wifi unsecured but another member of my household works with confidential medical information from home and is worried about the lack of security. I have attempted the trouble shooting tips on the support website already. My computer model is HP G60-235DX and the router is a Netgear N300 model WNR2000v3.

I have a Toshiba satellite L350D 01M laptop. My warranty period is over and I wanted to clean out the fans etc... and I have taken apart many laptops in the past but man it was hard to get all the connectors from the keyboard etc hooked up without unplugging another one because of the lack of wiggle room, how the guys at Toshiba put them together i will never know anyway i finally managed to get them all hooked up and the case back together but the wifi radio switch next to the SD slot was not aligned properly and rather than go through the nightmare of hooking it all back up again i forced the switch a little too much well actually a lot too much as i busted the dang thing right off.

so now i can't switch on the wifi which ain't that bad for home 'cause i have a wired modem but when i am out and about i need the wifi capability. someone suggested bridging the two connections i can see inside (a guy at staples) but that if it did work each time i shut it down i would have to bridge it again, well I tried that and I did something wrong as the whole system shut off like a lightening bolt and i thought i fried the motherboard as i couldn't get it to turn on, but i unhooked the battery unplugged and held down the power button for ten seconds then i plugged it back in minus the battery and luckily it worked, there is no way i am going to try that again and if i don't have to (i can't afford it anyway) is there anyway i can bypass the hardwire switch... Hello,

My laptop (an HP Pavilion dv5 using Windows 7) won't connect to my home wifi. Both my iphone and my ipad does without any problems. I've tried removing the wifi network from my laptop and adding it again. When I type in my password for the wifi it tells me there's a key mismatch although I'm 100% certain the password is correct. I kept typing it in and eventually it just tells me it cannot connect to my laptop.

I tried a system restore but my laptop wasn't able to complete it. It told me the restore failed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

About a week ago, my laptop just stopped connecting to my wifi. I have an HP Pavilion dv6 running Windows 7 (64-bit). I've had this laptop for about four years, if I'm not mistaken, and I have never had problems such as this before. It can detect neighboring connections, but it just doesn't detect my personal wifi. The router/modem is not the problem because I can connect to them with my other devices just fine (Samsung Galaxy S3/S4). I am able to connect via Ethernet cable, but of course this is a terrible inconvenience. Cuddling my router is not something I feel I'd want to do just to get some work done.

I have tried:
- restarting my router (Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Router model WNDR3400)
- restarting my laptop
- system restore
- uninstalling and reinstalling wireless drivers (originally was Intel WiFi Link 1000 BGN, when reinstalled it changed to Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000)
- changed router settings (router channel, password/security options)
- manually connecting through Control Panel (SSID is not set to be hidden, but still couldn't be found)
- troubleshooting (nothing was found)
- updating basically everything (router firmware, drivers, software, etc.,)

Long story short, none of this worked. I feel as though I have tried everything I could find within multiple forums and endless internet surfing, but I am simply out of ideas at this point.
The connection on my other devices is slow, but they connect nonetheless.

Hi,

I hope someone can help!

I am on holiday in Spain attempting to connect to a residential wireless network on a router that was installed up by an engineer this morning.

When the engineer was here he connected an HP laptop using XP to the wireless router. At first there was an issue with the connection (seemingly the same error message I am getting now), he did something to the wireless settings on the laptop, which stupidly I didn't see, and it successfully connected.

When I attempted to connect my laptop to the same wireless router I got the same error message:
'Connection Unsuccessful'
I clicked Diagnose Problem and got this:
'This computer has got limited or no connectivity'

I first selected the 'Automatically get new IP settings for the network adapter' but this didn't solve the problem. I then viewed the Wireless Network Security Settings and as far as I can see they are identical to those on the HP laptop that has successfully connected:

Security Type: No Authentication (open)
Encryption Type: WEP
Network Security Key: **********
Key Index: 1

I then connected my laptop to the router using the ADSL cable and was able to connect to the internet, but I am still unable to get a wireless connection. When I view the wireless connections I am 'Connected With Limited Access'.

I have included information below about laptop/router types. I'm not sure if anything else is required. Please also bear in mind I am in... Read more

Have you got the correct password for WEP for the wireless setting
remove the wireless profiles and reconnect and re-enter the password - see below

whats the make and model of the router - i would log intothe router and remove the WEP setting and see if you can now connect

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wireless Profiles
http://mgmcc.forumotion.net/networking-tutorials-f17/removing-an-existing-wireless-profile-t109.htm
- Vista/Windows7:
http://www.tp-link.com/support/showfaq.asp?id=214
- delete the wireless profiles
Start> control Panel> classic view> network and sharing center> manage wireless networks

Delete the profiles
you will then have to enter the wireless security key for any networks you connect to - so make sure you know the correct password , and not using an incorrect password at all

To connect the laptop 1:
There's an exclamation point on the wireless.
So I double click on it and it says that It's successfuly connected

--> So I created a broadband connexion with username and password (that my isp gave to me)
"connecting through WAN miniport (PPPOE)" .... OK pc connected and I can access the internet.

SO I did the same manipulation on the laptop 2.

The laptop belongs to my family and is one of the two laptops that my family owns. Both laptops are Compaq Presario CQ57 PC Notebooks. One is 3 years or so older than the other and I've noticed that they both have to different wireless network adaptors. The older laptop has Broadcom and the newer laptop has Realtek. As I'm sure you can guess, the older laptop is the one we're having trouble out of.The laptop has never had any problems connecting to the ARRIS wireless access point that is through Fedility Communications.

To get to the point, the older laptop had been connecting to the ARRIS wireless access point just fine until 8/30/2014.Thinking back it has done this before one other time a little over a year ago and my family never figured out why it did it.It just suddenly went back to normal. Now it's doing it again and the strange part is it will connect to my family's U.S Celluar hot spot. Here is the info I got from it.Please let me know if you need any more info.I hope the info given below helps and thank you to anyone who replies.

I have a three year old Dell Studio laptop with Windows 7, 64 bit. It is very bad at connecting to the internet wirelessly through wifi.
At home the router is in the room right next to me and its still inconsistent and often slow, although it can connect to the router when right next to it. When I go somewhere where the wifi is not particularly strong, especially public places, it sometimes connects but cannot load webpages, and sometimes it can't even connect even when there is a visible and decent signal. This is even when other people can connect fine with their laptops/iphones. In general it just has very bad connection.
This is really frustrating when I need internet anywhere besides home, any help is really appreciated!

Answer:Solved: Laptop has poor connectivity to any wifi network

Try going to the Dell website and see if you can get a new driver. Bad wireless connections is usually related to a fault in the driver. You can also check the antenna connections to be sure they are still fully seated. They are delicate and if you have never connected / disconnected one, you may want to seek assistance from a qualified technician.

Wireless adapters are really cheap these days, you could try buying a USB or PCMCIA wireless adapter if you can not get yours working.

I'm having a problem with the WiFi connection on my windows 7 based laptop, it connects to my router fine, and will stay connected and working correctly for anything from 2 minutes to an hour, then it will lose internet access.
I'm still able to use the wifi connection to access the router but not the internet.

I do not have this problem when using my ethernet connection or with any other wifi devices on the network. I also do not think it is an issue with the router as I have had the problem with both my old d-link router and my new DrayTek Vigor 2710D. I have already tried updating my drivers to the latest versions.

EDIT: forgot to mention, once the net drops, the only way I can get it back is to disable the network adapter and re-enable it

Any ideas?

I am trying to help a friend. I set up her laptop and desktop for "sharing" a printer. I can sometimes see the printer "found" by the laptop on the network and sometimes it doesn't "find" it. I had it and printed from the laptop and then later, the printer is offline again. The desktop runs XP with SP3 and the laptop runs Windows 7. The printer is hard wired into the desktop and the router/modem enables the wifi network. Any ideas you have would be greatly appreciated!
