Preferred Solution: ics and permission assign to other user in server

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Ewa,
It's just a example instead of your real ID.
The ID of yours {316CDED5-E4AE-4B15-9113-7055D84DCC97} must be in that list. Have you attempt to find it?
I have search it on my lab computer(Windows 8.1)as below:

My dad bought a Dell Inspirion with Vista. I went to help him set up some security apps, and noticed after trying to download spybot, I got a "disk is full" error. I knew he had plenty of space with a 250GB drive. I checked the partitions and saw C:\ and E:\. C is the main OS partition, and E is recovery. I noticed the recovery partition was full. After looking at the files in E:\, I saw the Users folder. This is a factory install from Dell, and have never seen this happen before. Every other folder is in C:\. I am a Linux user and am used to manually setting mount points, but don't know what the procedure is in Windows. I can move the Users folder back to C:\, but how do I tell Vista where to look for it once it is moved? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Assign User folder to different partition?

Hello 67GTA.

It the E: is a Dell 'Factory Recovery Partition' and you move it or do anything to it, it may not function correctly afterwards, it would be best to leave it alone.

This might be covered somewhere. I looked, but honestly, I'm not sure what the search term would be.

I've got a Vista laptop that was backed up with an on-line service (Carbonite). The hard drive failed and has been replaced. I did a restoration to factory settings and installed Microsoft Office, Mozilla, and Thunderbird the primary apps on the laptop.

Then I started a full restore. Primarily, the backup data includes everything in the c:\Users folders. It doesn't do Program Files unless you specify it. In this case, the backup is all the user files.

So, when I did the rebuild, I created a generic admin account. When I restored files, it restored the user files from the backup. So the drive looked like this:
C:\Users\Original UserName
C:\Users\GenericUserName

Then, I created a new admin account with the original user name and logged onto that account.

As you might guess, Vista created a NEW user folder C:\Users\Original UserName.PCName (just like a domain, local user account)

So, how am I supposed to logon to the original UserName account? How do I assign all the files under C:\Users\Original UserName to the user with the same name?

Once done, can I delete the other accounts and user folders?

While it's nice to get the data back, one of the major reasons for the backup is to recover all of the program settings/data like e-mail configs and such.

I've learned that logic has nothing to do with Vista, but my logic would say, finish restoring all the files and then s... Read more

I created a dedicated Counter Strike server and I noticed that if I run another CS server, it will have chokes. Because of that, my upload is limited to 80-100 kb/s

What I can do is request an additional IP and I have two NIC's ready. Both are up and connected fine.

I also plan to make a webpage in the future and I want to use my server for that. So I want to have a computer hosting up two CS servers and a website. For the website, I will add another NIC.

My operating system is WindowsXP.

My question is, I want to know how to assign a specific IP to one of the server or other applications?

Answer:how to assign a specific ip to a cs server?

Most server applications will allow you to specify the IP address to listen on. I know apache does this with the "Listen" option.

Are you simply getting additional IP addresses on the same connection? If so, that's not going to increase your upload rate. You will have to order more bandwidth from your ISP.

I'm putting together a new computer and I will be using Windows 7 Pro 64-bit for an OS. The computer will have a 250 GB SSD for the "C" drive, and a 500 GB HDD for the "D" drive. I want to install the OS and programs on the "C" drive and put all of the user info on the "D" drive. I will be setting it up with one account that is an Administrator, and two accounts that are Users. When Windows normally sets up these accounts, it seems to automatically put them on the "C" drive and it also creates folders for My Documents, My Music, My Photos, etc. on the "C" drive. Is there a way to configure windows to created the Administrator and User accounts and data folders on the "D" drive by default?

Thanks...!!!

Answer:How do I assign user files to a secondary drive?

I don't know...but there is no reason fool around with the Windows configuration,  Google reflects http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/18629-user-folders-change-default-location.html .

Any data files can simply be moved to another location...anytime that you desire.  Just because a file initially may be reflected in My Docs, etc...is no reason for it to permanently remain there.

I have a Toshiba SatM70 using Windows XP, don't know how but I have lost administrator access and using an ordinary limited account.

I can't seem to get back to being the administrator and need to because my anti virus protection has picked something up but I can't address it because I get a message saying you are not logged on as the administrator.

Can anyone help me to find out how to get back to being the administrator please? Thanks in advance.

When I took over a PC used by my predecessor, he had Win 7 (MS keyboard) set up so that the Windows key to the right of the space bar and Alt key will dump "http://www." into any open text field. This saves me a lot of time on a repetitive task with our software. However, when I asked one of our best developers how I could assign "mailto:" to another key, he had no idea how the existing functionality was set up. Googling "Windows 7 hotkeys" didn't find me any tips. What to do?

Answer:How did previous user assign special function to keyboard key?

Hi Guys ,
I want to copy some files to a specific user profile for many PCs via batch file . For example ,  User name is AAA . I need to copy files to "C:\Users\AAA\Appdata" .
As sometimes the user profile of AAA located in "C:\Users\AAA" or "C:\Users\AAA.Domainname". So currently I copy the bat file in the startup folder of AAA . The content of bat file is as below .
xcopy files "%userprofile%\AppData /S /Y

But the shortage is that it will start to run bat and copy file when AAA login every time . So I want to improve the deployment .
So Does any guys know how to assign special user account (AAA) to %userprofile% variable ? So I can run bat file only once via SCCM deployment and no need to add it into startup folder run again and again .
Thanks.

I have a Cisco 3560v2 switch and a Cisco 2600 series Airnet Wireless Access Point, but the AP can't obtain an IP address from the switch being used as a DHCP server. I've been told I need a trunk on the switches to accomplish this too and I'm using configs from Labs 5.1 Inter-vlan Routing and 5.2 DHCP Server from version 7 of the CCNP IP SWITCH Lab manual to attempt to accomplish this. However, it's not working though.

Ports 7-8 are trunked though on port channel 3 on the DLS2, Ports 9-10 are trunked as well as part of port channel 4, and ports 11-12 are trunked as part of port channel 2 on DLS2 as well and the same on all other required switches. Some switchports might night be working though, but port 6 that I tried to use to connect to the AP seems to be and so does port 7 on DLS2. However, port 8 on DLS2 doesn't seem to be and when I try to trunk port 6 with 7 and 8 it says unable to pair or something like that. Can anyone help me figure out why I can't accomplish this. I'm running IOS 15.0(2) SE4 on four 3560v2's if that helps.

The problem is you have to have an .MSI to use when you are assigning. The only Office service pack I can find is the one for stand alone workstations. Any suggestions?

Hi everybody,
I have recently move bought a 4G Lte mobile hotspot/Router from a ISP as package with the 4G line which only works with that that router.
After start using it, I have discover that this router only assign two IPs to wireless devices, which means I can only connect two devices at the same time.
Its is very annoying especially when you have 2 lab tops and 2 smartphones at home and you have to the WIFI option on and off because only two of them can be connected.
Somebody advice me to buy a regular router and connect it to the 4G modem wirelessly and setup the regular router as repeater and it will assign its own IPs which can expand the number of devices I can connect through my 4G .
So I bought a EnGenius ESR6670 wireless router which have AP repeater mode also, but couldn’t set it up to receive the signal from the 4G router and rebroadcast it and give me more connected devices.
Anyway to do that?

Before I started in my current position, all users were added as administrators of their local machines.

I am in the process of removing these permissions, but I have one question:

Whenever I add the "Domain Users" to the list using MYDOMAIN\Domain Users, after the next reboot, the "Domain Users" setting is no longer appearing.

Any ideas?

Hey everyone
I was wondering if it is possible to make a specific user (such as Guest) and change it's user permissions. For instance, right now, Guest can do the usual stuff but not access any folders other than its own My Documents. What I want to do is configure it so it is not able to use certain applications, click properties for the desktop, etc.

Anyone know how?

I'm not griping this time!

I've set up a limited account on my computer, and when I was testing it out, I noticed that I was able to manipulate the settings to the anti-virus program that's installed. How do I, using my administrator account, prevent the limited account from messing with it? I've hidden as many folders as possible, but the task bar icon is still visible and I can't hide it. And I can't right-click the task bar icon and mess with the security settings that way.

Answer:User account permission settings

Robwood,

The problem is more with your Internet Security software than with Vista. If you make the files for the Internet Security software inaccessible to a limited user - that software might not work properly for that user. Most Internet Security software (i.e. Norton, McAfee) allows you to install parental controls and give you the ability to control WHAT Windows users can or cannot do (including the manipulation of the software's settings).

What Internet Security Software are you using? Have you installed parental controls? Did you install the software while logged in as "Administrator"?

Let me know and I can probably offer more assistance.

- John

When I try to do certain things(like adding the new task of explorer.exe or control panel to uninstall things) on my computer, even under the administer user, it gives me the message.... You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the file.

I had problems after logging in on my computer. It only gives me my background + mouse cursor.

I've tried the UPDATED 8-step Viruses/Spyware/Malware Preliminary Removal Instructions. For step 4, when I try running the install file for malawarebytes, it lists it under processes but not applications. It doesn't show the install screen for it.

my other thread under the virus/malware removal if it's of any use.

As a less than knowledgeable computer user I stupidly changed my User "Permission Allow" check marks. I now get a "failed to enumerate objects in the container. Access denied." Of coarse I didn't write down what was originally checked off in the "Allow" box.

Would there be a listing of default settings so I can recheck the 3 categories and boxes within them to original. "System", "My Name With email address", and "Administrators"?

I just recovered a friend's laptop using the built in hardware recovery console. (hp hidden recovery partition)

Now the all the folders inside his documents and settings forlder are inaccessible. At first his entire user folder was completely inacessible but i went into safe mode and shanged the security settings/permissions to allow for administrator and his user name access. Now I can get into the user folder but I cannot get inside the folders inside the folder.

When I try to change the security settings of the folder it gives me some kind of "you will be unable to change the security settings" message.

Please help, I am at my wit's end.

But i faced a problem is that my other computer cannot find. how to i add the computer name in the list. Please advise me. thanks

Answer:how to set the permission to access the file from other user

You won't be able to assign permissions to the specific computer. Instead you will need to add the person's user account to the permission list.

When I try to delete certain files that I downloaded (intentionally or not) that I want off my system, I am told I need to get permisson to do this. I am the only user who has ever been on this system. I should have complete access as I am the sole system administrator. I believe these files that I cannot delete, DivX player, which I did download and an unwanted antivirus program "FileCure," which I did not download and has caused me many problems before, are causing all sorts of problems on my system, including a background task running audio of ads and news (a radio station?) which I cannot get rid of. How do I reassert complete control of my system and delete these files. (76 people have viewed my other post here for help with that audio problem and other problems. No suggestions yet. Help me get these files off my system! Thanks!

Hey everyone,

Thanks for this great website. This will actually be my first post here. I am having issues with my DNS configurations, under the IPV4 properties. I originally had it set to receive the dns server automatically, and now it is constantly changing to receive dns server through a static IP. The static Ip address that keeps getting assigned is 216.146.36.240. I do have internet access, but I my outlook which is setup with a exchange email address is not connecting because of this issue. I noticed that my homepage did change once, but I dont know if it was because of a software that I downloaded or virus related. Honestly, I am not sure what is causing this.

Things that I have already tried:
Booted into safemode and ran rkill followed by malwarebytes and superantispyware.
I didnt know I wasn't supposed to run it on my own, but I ran Combofix (sorry)
I ran Microsoft Security Essentials
I ran from a command line ipconfig /flushdns, and rebooted.

Thanks guys

Answer:DNS server changes to static without permission

I thought it was dyndns.org that was the issue, and i just realized it wasn't.
There is a software called Sendori, I uninstalled it. And that seemed to be the problem.

I run a windows 2003 server. I have about 10 computers connected to the network. Everything was working great, until I took a vacation. When I came back one of the computers could not connect to the network. Everytime I try to go to the network I get the message "\\servername is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions." I have not changed anything with the server. I have tried disabling the firewall on the computer that cannot connect. I reformatted the computer and the message still appears. Does anyone have any ideas?

Answer:\\server is not accessible. You might not have permission to use etc etc

It may have been dropped from the domain, happens from time to time. Try removing it from the domain and readding it.

Agh!
I keep getting this error everytime I try to get onto a certain site:

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access / on this server.

And I am not sure why. I can access the site when I am on a different network or through a proxy, but not from my home network. Is is possible that I was blocked from this site or something? Is there a way to get around this (other than a proxy)?

Answer:You don't have permission to access / on this server.

Can you tell us the site or give us a link to it so we can see if others get the same error.

Cheers!

Since upgrading to Windows 10 only one of my scheduled tasks seems to work.

I cannot edit a current task or create a new one as I get the following error message:

"Task scheduler cannot apply your changes. The user account is unknown, the password is incorrect, or the user account does not have permission to modify the task."

It does not matter if I start the scheduler from the command line or normally ( I have tried "Run as administrator").

Been at this for days and tried searching using different search terms hoping to find an answer.

I even tried changing my Time Zone (although I do not have the half hour difference that has been causing issues for others).

The latest updates were carried out yesterday and they included a Task Scheduler update

Only changes I have made to the system since the Win 10 upgrade is that Avast AV would not let Win 10 work properly so I uninstalled it and I am now using 360 Total Security. I also had to reinstall my printer drivers.

Anyone able to help?

Cheers,

Henry

Hello all. I am relatively new to using Vista and am hoping someone can help me. All of my users have standard user accounts on their PCs. There are some specific programs installed which need to be updated regularly. However, updates require the administrator password, which means I have to do the updates on each PC myself. Is there a way to set the permissions so the user can update only the programs I designate? Thanks.

I installed XP on a friend's computer onto a fresh hard drive, leaving his old one on the same IDE channel (it's an old computer), but I just made one master and one slave.

When we went to try and move over his user folder from the old hard drive, it gave us the ol' 'Permission Denied'. I'm being told by a few of my other tech friends that you need to set the security permission for the folder, but I don't really know if that's the solution. I activated the Security tab on all folders, but I haven't tried to mess with it because I don't rightly know what to do.

If anyone has a solution so my friend can get his files off his old user folder, I would be very grateful.

Thanks, guys.

You need to take ownership of the files.

BOOT INTO SAFE MODE FIRST IF USING XP HOME

You can find out how to take ownership of a file/folder here:

Before the Win 10 upgrades, all computers could see each other and share files within the network here at home. None require passwords or Pins on boot up. hey guys,

What I am trying to do is map all the user permissions on a shared drive.
This includes who has access to what subfolder and etc.
Now, I could go through this manually, but that would take weeks being that its a 60GB share.
Also, I have to add group permission now and then to certain folders etc.

Does anyone know of a program that will map user permissions (group) of each folder on the drive?

Answer:Mapping User Permission on a Shared Drive

Is the file structure heirarchical? If so you can just set sub folders to inherit permissions from the parent. I usually base share permissions on group membership. I create groups in the form of [servername]_[sharename]_[rwx]. I then provide those groups with access to the share. The only thing needed from that point is to add the required individuals to the group. It's much easier to keep track of this way and you don't have to wait forever on huge shares that propogate security settings to a million child folders everytime membership changes.

Power Manager works fine when user=ADMINISTRATOR. However, when user=USER, I can't change power schemes.I forced permissions to FULL CONTROL on the registry key (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\PowerCFG) and its subkeys for user=USER, but this did not fix the problem.I have removed Thinkpad Power Manager and the TP Power Manager Driver and reinstalled, as user=ADMINISTRATOR, with the latest downloads from Lenovo. Still, the problem persists. Can anyone suggest an explanation and solution for this odd problem?

Answer:power manager user permission problem

It has to be something with user permissions.  o to control panel, then user accounts and see what you can find regarding what permissions regular users are allowed.  Changing the accounts to have administrator privledges this way should fix your problem, (but will give them full control over the computer)

Hello all- I have researched this problem I have and cannot find a definitive solution. I have some external hard drives I use to store pictures movies, etc. Many of the folders and files that have been put on the drives are just wasting space and I would like to delete them. Problem is when I try to delete the laptop tells me I need permission to perform the delete. When I go to that folder and pull up the properties to get the security tab to edit the user permissions... I highlight any of the accounts (including the administrator account) and it does not allow me to add, remove, click on full control to allow full control, etc. Those functions are grayed out and will not allow me to change them so that I can have full permission rights and delete the folders on the hard drive. It is very annoying and in time the hard drive will be near full and I will have all those unwanted folders and files taking up space.

I have noticed that all the external drives I plug into my laptop show them to be in the shared state and it shows a tiny icon on top of the drive letter of two people's upper torso and head standing next to each other.

Does anyone know how to fix this or get access permission rights for these external drives.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Permission is just my newest trouble! My computer crashed some weeks ago, & I never received a solution; I have Windows 7 Home Premium on, 32 bit, on a Toshiba Satellite laptop. It replaces one that was stolen from me; no frills is fine, but I have had many troubles!

I am in exams online in grad school, so did not do my Performance Monitor/Error checking or anything, just working on schoolwork. But as I worked with reports, etc., I realized that all files in "My Documents" were also in (at least!) two other places: Public Documents and Pictures --

I went right to trying to move them, they were marked "Read Only", and I wasn't able to gain permission to ,make changes or move my files out of Public Documents, where they were "shared" & I was blocked from hitting "stop sharing" -- "didn't have the authority". When I realized they were also in Pictures, and set up as "Share" items, I was sickened; my very private documents on my computer system, & I didn't have the right to move my own files!

I am the Administrator, and I am the Owner; I live alone and nobody has used my laptop. *When I wrestled to restore my Permissions, I might make the changes, and "SYSTEM" seemed to be "in charge" -- my Full Control permissions were faded out, & when I would restore them, I could not click "Apply". Now unable to change permissions, or properties, I went to search for ... Read more

Well, I am totally baffled (and it takes a lot to baffle me!). I want to share the My Documents folder from an XP machine with ONLY one user (the administrator) on a networked Win 7 machine. I have turned off simple sharing on the XP machine. I hate XP!! So complicated to do anything. Anyway, under security, I have tried share this folder, and not to share folder. I have gone into Advanced and messed around with permissions, taking out Everyone, using Admin only, using Network. At one point I ended up not being able to access My Documents on the local computer and had to jump through many hoops to change ownership and disable read only so that the user could use her own files!

The problem is, under Advanced in the permissions area, I cannot see the users on the remote pc to choose which one should be allowed access. I have read countless help suggestions, but none of them tell me how to actually find a particular user on the Win 7 pc and give ONLY that user permission to read (not to change) the files in My Documents on the XP pc. Can anyone give me a step by step process to do this? I work on computers all the time (I am a computer consultant) so it is embarrassing that I cannot set up this seemingly simple situation. Ugh!

Answer:Set permission for just one remote user to share a folder

1. Find out the name of the account on the remote machine (you may have to ask the owner of it).
2. Add a new account on the XP with the same name as on the Windows 7.
3. Give the desired permissions to that newly created account.

EDIT: It's simplest if you use the same password on both machines. Else you'll need to tell the Windows 7 account owner the XP's password.

I have networked an xp pro desktop with a Vista business laptop.
For some of the shared folders of the XP box, I want to set the permission to include a specific user from the networked vista machine.
When I go to the folder Properties / Security / Permission / Select Users or Group and click on Locations, all I see is the XP box, so I cannot select any specific user (i.e. restrict to the administrator) from the Vista laptop.

I created a user with the same name on the Vista and XP machine but any xp machine Doc or Excel file I open from Vista appears as Read Only in Word and Excel, even if I transfer ownership to the XP user that bears the same name as the Vista user. Strangely, the property of the file does not show read only when checked from xp or vista explorer. But I can't save from my laptop onto the xp machine shared folders. So, something is wrong in my config but I have no idea what...

Note:
The 2 machines are communicating fine and I am able to exchange files between them.

Hi All,

This is my first post here. I am trying hard to solve this permissions problem on my own--with lots of research, but I am truly stumped and I hope you can help.

Here is the overview:

I have FIVE PC's networked to a server, FOUR of them through Homegroup and FIFTH PC outside Homegroup. I want to exclude the FIFTH PC from all folders on the FOUR PC's and FOUR of the FIVE folders on the server. The FOUR PC's will have everything BUT Full Control access to the FIVE other folders on the server, but the FIFTH PC will be totally excluded from FOUR of those folders. with everything BUT Full Control over the FIFTH folder. These FIVE folders are on the "J" drive on the server, under a parent folder called "Network Shared Folders."

I learned that if you, or a group you belong to, have share permissions AND NTFS rights, you can browse into the share. I also learned that if you, or the group you belong to, are ONLY on the NTFS, you cannot browse into the share AND you cannot access any folders beneath the share, even if you have rights to them. The two other applicable rules: 1) when combining NTFS permissions and share permissions, the most restrictive effective permission applies and 2) permissions are combined when a user is not explicitly denied access. Finally, you should avoid using the "Deny" permission if possible.

When I set the share and NTFS permissions according to those rules, I either get all the PC's excluded from the fol... Read more

Hello Thumb Welcome to the Ten Forums!

You may have to consider enabling the remote access feature in 10 on the Netbook as well as the main in order to gain access to the mobile unit or suffice by using a 3rd party program called Team Viewer used here on VMs as well as two desktops and laptops. First to look at the guide for how to set up the RDC(Remote Desktop Protocol). RDC - Connect Remotely to your Windows 10 PC - Windows 10 Forums

With the Team View program free for home use I have 10 Home and Pro VMs connecting to the two 10 Pro/7 Ultimate and 10 Pro/7 Pro dual booted desktops as well as several VMs including Server 2016 DataCenter evaluation build on VM. You can transfer files and folders by remote web access. The RDP however is what you will need to be looking at for a closed home network(hard wired by ethernet cables) while the Main to Netbook of course could use a little help?

I have tried everything I have read about giving permissions, admin right etc, but it still asks for my password everytime he opens the game? I'm at a loss...thank you for your time

Hello Scott,

You might see if creating an elevated shortcut of the game that standard users can use to run the game elevated without getting an UAC prompt for your password may help.

Since this is for a game and not a normal program, there's no guarantee that this will work though.

Dear all:
This question is about giving right permission for users to access a folder, which contains a MS Access file database. In this case, without using MS Access to grant Read/Write rights, I can use Server OS to control user permissions of Read/Write.

However, it has happened a few times that suddenly some of us who have Administrator rights were only able to read the data but not able to alter; in other words, our permission rights have changed from Administrator to limited users. (Admin has both read and write, limited users only have read only).

I checked on the Server end, the permissions (for accessing that folder) are given correctly (assigned within Active Directory).

I was trying to figure out how it happened, and suddenly, I was able to view the database as Admin again.

There seems to be a glitch with my network across MS platform or something... sometimes either I cannot view the computers/shared folders on network, or sometimes I cannot access certain directories with right permissions.

Gladly this does not happen often (like once a month). But still, I would like to fix it. If anyone knows anything about it, please feel free to share your knowledge -)

Thank you~~

I regularly share drives and printers across all machines and all appear to work except for this laptop. I have found that I can pring the other computers without issue if I use the ip address and can "net use" the drives directly by specifying the ip address rather than the computer name. However, any attempt to use the computer name fails (as above or as a "System error 53 has occurred" in a command prompt). Using the [email protected] solves part of the problem but I cannot find a similar [email protected] workaround to get to my network printer successfully.

All computers are running XP professional. I have tried disabling firewalls. The laptop is a work-configured laptop (as is my wife's) and works fine connected to all manner of networks. As I mentioned, this machine worked fine a unil I noticed an issue about a month ago. This problem persists through re-boots.

Here is nbtstat -n and ipconfig /all from my laptop. Any and all ideas much appreciated.

Answer:Forbidden: You don't have permission to access / on this server.

Clear the Cookies, etc for whatever web browser you are using. If using any third party security software, make sure that it is not blocking that website. Basic stuff that you need to go and check to make sure that it is not one of those two items causing it.

Hey I am sharing a program on the server and the clients can use it fine but when they click to open a blank diagram which is located inside of the same folder we get an error message stating it cannot find the path to the file. I have changed the security to allow the users to have full controll but it still has the same problem.

Programs that get deeper into the system are riskier to it so additional permissions are required, in some cases setting them to always run "As administrator" may help.

Is there a way to make take ownership change file/folder permission to machine/user while getting rid of old and or corrupted information?

Just something that came to mind when I was fooling with format/reinstalling windose again. I dunno if its something to be aware of or not but knowing windose it might be a bad thing if it gets to cluttered with iffy info.

And is there a way to change system file/folder permission's to the new install? Sometimes something goes wonky and I have nothing but problems from folders deep within programdata/windows/appdata not wanting to allow an installer to put stuff in there.

I note that there have been several other posts on this subject but I cannot see one that solves my problem. I was transferring files from one external drive to another, I found a problem with a set of folders that I could not transfer with permission which should have been fine as I have administrator rights.

Looking at the folder permissions I found an unknown user account
Looking for solutions I tried to delete this account but was not allowed unless I turned off inherited permissions
I tried turning off the inheritance but this resulted in an error saying it failed to enumerate the number of objects in the container access denied.

Looking at some individual files (in one of the offending folders) properties showed 'Unable to display current owner' selecting the 'Change' option allowed me to change the file ownership to Everyone - Full Control and I could then move or delete the file.

There are quite a lot of files to do so is there a way to change all the affected folder & file permissions in one move?

Answer:Windows 8.1 Unknown User Account Permission problem

Hi Jon, welcome to the Eight Forums.

The user profile with SID (security identifier) ending with 1001 is usually (not always) the first user account created when Windows is installed or a pre-installed Windows booted first time. In most cases this means it's your own user account.

You can check for which user account that SID belongs by giving the following command in Command Prompt:

Code:
wmic useraccount get name,sid

This example from my laptop, the first account I created when I installed Windows 8.1 was a local account called Admin which got the SID 1001:

SID ending with 500 belongs always to the built-in administrator account, SID ending with 501 to built-in Guest account, whether these two accounts are enabled and active or not. Other user accounts start from 1000.

What the above means is that you have most probably tried to remove your own account. Don't do that !

I have a home network implemented using workgroup. I want to share a folder on my vista pc with one other user over lan. I want to set it up like if that particular user clicks on the folder (under "Network"->"My PC"), he gets access, but if some other lan user clicks on the folder, it prompt for a password OR give any kind of error.
So far I have tried going to to-be-shared folder's security permissions and grant "Everyone" read persmissions, but then everyone over lan gets access to the folder contents. If I remove everyone, then that specific user I want to share folder with also gets blocked out. So far its all-or-none results for me. Someone suggested me to create a local account on my pc with the same username as the friend I want to share folder with, but thats little clumsy stopgap solution for me because then I would have to create a user on my pc for every person over lan who I want to share a specific folder with. Is there any other way to accomplish the desired results??

Answer:How to give file sharing permission to a specific user over lan??

there are a couple of ways you could make it happen but they all involve extra time and or money:
1) set up as NAS system some of the like the buffallo drive will allow you to create users to access network resources

2) use a open source ldap implentation to create a directory

3) set up a win srv 2k3/8 directory

without a directory there is no way to centerlly manage users and ressouces thats why setting

a cheap way would be if you have a extra pc and a large HDD you can?store all the profiles and shared folders on this pc

Hi

I mistakenly changed the user access permissions to a folder in order to fix a problem where an update to a program would not install as it did not have the required permissions. I'm pretty much inept at this, so I have no idea what the permissions should look like for the folder in question.

I was told that I could simply delete the file and reinstall the application completely to reset the access permissions by a friend of mine, but I now cannot delete the file. It asks for permission from DESKTOP-H8EAS90\User to delete, but I have no idea what this is and cannot find out through google.

If any information is required to give advice on what is happening feel free to ask.

Thanks

Answer:Deleting a file requires permission from a user that is not on this computer?

If you do not know what you are doing, it is best to leave the Permissions alone. As you have seen, this can cause great harm.
For this one file you can Take Ownership of it

We're trying to automate using netdom to join machines to the domain. The only problem we've run into is that the account we created to do this has permissions to add a machine, but cannot remove it. We're having trouble finding where to give it that permission in AD.

Can someone clue me in here?

Before someone starts suggesting sysprep, understand that aside from this small issue we've got our image process down to two steps:

1) Boot from a floppy or USB drive to start Ghost pulling whichever image we need
2) Return after the image is done and enter the computer name in a DOS window

Batch files are great. It renames the PC, reboots it, joins it to the domain, reboots, logs inot the domain, installs antivirus, resets the local admin password, removes the automatic login, cleans up all the batch files, and shuts down. And all we have to do is type the computer name.

Answer:Granting user permission to remove machine from domain

Open ADUC, go to View, and select Advanced Features. This will give you the Security tab under the Properties view. Then, bring up the Properties for the OU that holds the computer accounts. Find the account you want to give the permissions to, and click Edit. Then, just look for the "Delete Computer Objects" entry.

Hello,

I have an issue with my main user profile - I renamed it, and since then there have been small issues, like the search not finding installed apps, certain Windows apps showing only a blank screen (including Contact Support, which is good for a chuckle), and an occasional hang on restart. I created a test profile, and have confirmed that Search, Apps, and restarting behave as expected with the new profile after initial login.

Once I copy the data from the original user over things get more interesting. The desktop opens quickly, and while some icons lose their program association (links to websites which are represented by Chrome icons on the bad profile), other programs will open on a double click. The issue is that the search box doesn't allow text to be entered, and the start button does nothing. Clicking on File Explorer, I get a message that "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file." I tried to screenshot that and save it in mspaint, but on attempting to save I get the message "You can't save to 'This PC'. Please Choose another location." (Dodgy screenshot attached - had to take it with a phone)

I followed this procedure for copying over the data, which I performed from the built-in Administrator account : https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...#1TC=windows-7

One exception to the procedure listed was that I found that I had to log in to the new user account before moving files into the folder. If I didn't, even with a ... Read more

Answer:Permission issues after copying User data to new profile.

I was able to resolve this issue by resetting the Windows file permissions to their defaults. I had tried to reset them a few different ways, but this is what ended up working :

If it's not enabled, enable the built-in Administrator Account (at elevated command prompt : net user administrator /active:yes )Log out of all active accounts.Log in as built in Administrator. To restore the default file permissions, at an elevated command prompt run this command: secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verboseRestart the computer.Log in to the new account - this took longer than usual, I assume due to the settings being applied.Log in to any other active accounts (built-in Administrator will be disabled by the command above)After successful login to all accounts, restart again.

I have an external drive connected to a computer (running Windows 8) that's shared on a home network, accessible by 3 other machines (these machines run Windows 7). The permission is set up such that all other 3 machines can access and read files from the external drive, and they have no problem doing so. Within that external drive, I have a folder with permission set for Everyone and full control, because I want to allow other 3 machines to edit files in or copy files into that particular subfolder. Despite that, other 3 machines cannot edit files in that folder, nor able to copy files into that folder. I checked permission tab of that folder from a network machine, and it does display Everyone with full control. Any suggestion? Thanks.

Besides the permission settings on the sharing tab you also need to go into the Security Tab and add permissions for Everyone there as well. The link below shows you how.

We have an application(Myapp.exe), which is runs under administrator account properly( as it edit/update/write DLL in registry). But due to to security resons we dont want to provide Admin password to all users, and we want to run application under Standard User ( member of Users group only).
I did these setting in MyApp.exe.manifest
<requestedExecutionLevel level="asInvoker" uiAccess="false" />
and linked in the file MyApp.rc as given below
Partial Class MyApp :Form
{
Public MyApp
{
InitializeComponent();

#define MANIFEST_RESOURCE_ID 1
MANIFEST_RESOURCE_ID RT_MANIFEST "ProLaw.exe.manifest"
}

I buld the project, and through Standard user i tried to run the project, but it is still asking Administrator password.
Am i missing any step?

Hi All,

After a recent reboot last week I wound up at an unfamiliar "choose user" screen during the windows start-up process. I personally didn't create a user, and this user just appeared out of nowhere. So I thought nothing of it, logged on, deleted user from the management console and went on with my day. I rebooted within the next day or two and the user magically reappeared. I am now a little fed up, and a little worried.

I traced back to the first time the user was created in the windows security logs, and it turns out the user was created by the SYSTEM account after the SYSTEM account acquired new permissions. Maybe I am reading too far into this, but any help will be appreciated. Attached to this post is the error log. The Errors logged were in the middle of the night, and over a course of 30 minutes. As mentioned before, this user does not exist in the registry, or "control userpasswords2", but comes up in the management console and "users" menu in the control panel.

Answer:New User created without my permission? Doesn't exist in registry.

Hi Rich,

I receive the same message when I go to the website in VirtualBox. I used to get this error when I set incorrect permissions on my index file with CHMOD. Perhaps the website is being upgraded. This page is particularly odd since it actually loads the domain, yet still gives the error.

I would give it a few days and see if it's up again.

I've set up several users on my W2K server domain controller. I've set up several directories to be shared with 'everyone' on the network. Whenever I attempt to logon a workstaion as one of the users, I am told 'access denied'.

If I am making the resource available to everyone (with full read/write permissions), how can someone be denied access? Am I missing a step here?

Answer:Windows 2000 server permission issue

permissions on a share is a separate set of information than login information. If you share something with everyone, it does not mean that everyone can log into a workstation. They will have to log in as a valid user, then connect to the share from there.

Yes you do want Outlook Express to act as a server, go into the program window in Zone Alarm and make sure you have four ticks in OE line, have a look in Start Up (RUN>MSCONFIG>STARTUP) and see what you have running this could be causing slow download, but Hotmail is not the speediest.
