Question: Solved: program to track application-specific bandwidth usage?

is there any software out there that will tell me how much upload and download bandwidth is coming from what processes on my machine, and possibly total it up over time? i'm cureious to see how much things like dropbox are affecting my monthly bandwidth caps and also wanting to make sure i don't have any apps that are sneaking stuff over my lines. Preferred Solution: Solved: program to track application-specific bandwidth usage?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Moderator - It was for legitamte use but as you had a problem with me mentioning it i won't mention it again.

We have a "base" laptop that stays on 24/7 in our house connected to a router via lan cable, all other laptops are wireless.

I downloaded P2POVER to restrict and limit the speed of some users connected to the network due to bandwidth getting used pretty quick.

With P2POVER, I then noticed that the 'localhost' i.e. "base" laptop has crazy high outgoing and incoming KB/s readings when nothing on it (well nothing is supposed to be) is using the internet. The only thing it has is anti virus software and a few other apps that don't use the internet. So my question is how come? Is that reading high because it is all the other computers incoming and outgoing KB/s put together? Surely that isn't right ebcause they connect directly to the wireless router and not through the "base" laptop. Tried setting a schedule and rule to limit the localhost to 10KB/s and it didn't make a difference, it didn't follow the rule, and having P2POVER open for a few mins localhost reached 341mb of daily traffic already! From zero!

However, I go online to my ISP website to check our bandwidth usage for the month (don't know how often it's refreshed/updated) but it doesn't look like our usage is going up as crazy as the P2POVER program is telling me it's using, so can someone PLEASE tell me WHY P2POVER is telli... Read more

I need a software solution to be able limit the bandwidth for specific (defined) application. I run XP behind a firewall (no access to firewall) and need to limit both uplink and downlink. I have tried a product called NetLimiter v0.91 Beta 3 but it is too buggy.

As the title indicates, I'd like to restrict the amount of bandwidth or internet access speed of a specific application on my PC. Preferably during certain times only, but even a way to enable and disable this rule as I need would be fine.

I have a 1Mb ADSL with a measly 3GB monthly cap (it's painful, can't afford more at the moment though), and Steam turns out to be the nastiest, bloated, deceptive, sneaky, bandwidth-whor........<a while later>........ piece of software ever released to the world at large.

So, I keep setting all my games to "Do not update automatically" (which needs to be re-set after each time a game is run), and it supposedly doesn't download updates or patches while a game is being played... Despite this, if I decide to play Borderlands, after launching the game I have to alt-tab into Windows, go to Steam, and pause the next "Suspended" 250MB or 300MB update that it's busy downloading... I may have a slow connection by most of your standards, but at a pretty constant 100KB/s, 3GB isn't exactly going to last me that long.

Now, I do have a service from my ISP that gives me 5 times my download cap between 1am and 5am (more info, if you like).. So I can get a theoretical 15GB a month if I play my cards right. Is there any firewall out there that will allow me to limit the access speed of Steam to 5KB/s or 10KB/s during specific times...?

Please note: I've tried NetLimiter's trial, and it works perfectly, but it's a bit pr... Read more

Hello friends,

i have one network utility continuously listening on port 1000 and wants to find bandwidth usage of that program and also want know network load due to that application. In short How much network resources are consumed through that application.

Kindly help..How can i check this things.

Answer:How to Find bandwidth usage of particular application?

You would be easier to help if you provided more information about your machine, such as your Operating System. If you are using Vista you could access the "Reliability and performance monitor" from Administrative tools. It has to be run as an administrator to work properly, and when working monitors the network usage (among other things) of various programs on your computer.

Dear Networking Gurus,
Please Help Me! I need to find the easiest and most informative method for measuring bandwidth usage for a particular network device.
I want a solution, prefferably free to low cost, that will show me statistics that would allow me to see unexpected network traffic for debugging purposes.

Disclaimer and Conditions
I have limited networking experience and knowledge.
Installing software on the device in not an option.
Its gateway is limited linksys router that cannot be upgraded with third part firmware.

I have attempted to use wireshark, but its bandwidth usage statistics are limited to how many bytes per second and does not give me useful information for long term usage over 24hr and beyond. It crashes after a day of use on the workstations that are available to me.
Is there some hidden setting that processes capture and displays the usage information in a simple layout?
Is there some other application that can read wireshark captures and present usage information in a more meaningul way? preferably windows, but I can usually manage linux.

I hooked one of my workstations up to a hub and am currently trying out NTOP, running off a Securix-NSM live cd, hoping to discover useful network trends.
Does anyone know how accurate Ntop is when it comes to bandwidth usage?
Are there any big limitations to Ntop?
Is there a way to remove the default p2p filters and monitor specific ports of my choosing?

Any help is much appreciated

My laptop is running slow and the battery drains too fast, and the hard drive just starts going constantly sometimes; it's half-full (out of 320GB), I've already cleaned up, defragmented, run virus scans with various anti-virus products, and something is just dragging it down. I can't tell if the hard drive is dying or a bunch of programs are sucking up resources (like anti-virus).

I only know how to use Task Manager, and I'm not seeing how to track usage over a day or so.

Is there something I can use? What would be the best and what are some other good ones?

(Note: I've used Process Explorer but I'm not getting much more valuable information out of it)

You'd need to configure it not to restrain some processes though.

I saw this thread and got reminded of something that is bothering me a bit.

I've got an Ubuntu box running torrents for me (Transmission), and if I watch the network usage in System Monitor I get an upstream that is generally over 2x what I have the upstream limited to in Transmission. I know there should be some overhead in there, but when Transmission is limited to 27kB/sec up and I see 70KiB/sec up regularly in System Monitor I know something doesn't sound right.

On a clean boot, launching only Transmission, I get this issue. I'm barely even a novice in linux so there exists a real possibility I'm missing something obvious here.

I am writing this because I am seeking help with an Email related issue.

I am trying to use a program that retrieves Inbound Email attachments and resends them to a new destination… it is a dispatch program.

The Help Files associated with this program make reference to “The Attachment Folder” from “My Email Program”.

I am currently using Microsoft Outlook 2000 as my Email program although… I also have Outlook Express as an optional email program that I could use.

I would prefer to stay with Outlook 2000 though…

I am enclosing an excerpt from the “Help” File associated with this program so you can see their exact reference to an “Attachment Folder from my Email Program”.

I have tried contacting The Program Manufacturers Tech. Support but as yet have not heard back from them.

If you can assist or advise me in any way I would appreciate it very much, as I am completely lost as to what to do next.

I read an earlier post about usage, but it didn't really answer my question. I use AT&T as my Internet provider, and am allowed 5Gb per month. Normally this is adequate but I am home a lot more now, and am approaching that limit regularly. This month, I have already used more than 20% capacity with 90% of the month left. I am wondering where my heaviest usuage lies. I have started to watch my usage daily, but still have questions. I enjoy downloading pictures form the Hubble telescope, read quite a bit of online news, and also play a lot of online poker-(the free kind). I am assuming the pictures take a lot. Is tht correct?

I have a building site office with one Acer laptop running windows 8 and I connect to the internet using a Telstra Elite WiFi modem - see link for data sheet. Prepaid QSG - final.pdf
The user switches on the WiFi modem in the morning and off in the evening and during the day uses it for email and internet but mostly small files like drawings etc and it has been fine for a number of years. In the last 6 months, the data is getting consumed at a large rate - approx. 12GB per month (compared to 12GB over about 10 months). I can log into the Telstra account and see the usage days and see where every so often (irregular pattern like 3 days then 5 then 2 then 1 then 7) there are large downloads of very similar size ~2.7GB). I looked at the windows updates and whilst they were on auto update, the history doesn't line up with the usage. How do I identify what programs are using this data or updating etc and how to stop it. Thanks

My I.P. Shaw Cable has a limit in its TOS (Acceptable Use Policy) according to which of four speeds one pays for, of, in my case, 60GBs per month. I can get no support from the company in this matter.

I have invested in some streaming video and audio which, during the month of December, will be offered for 105 hours. The streaming rate is 401 Kbitsps.

I would appreciate confirmation of my bandwidth usage which I have calculated as totaling 17.6 GBs. This is my calculation:

500 Kbits/second = 0.05960 MBps so 401Kbits/second is 401/500 x .05960 = .04768 MBps

.04768 x 60 x 60 x 105 = 18.02304 MB and 18.02304/1024 = 17.60 GB total usage.

Am I on track please?

Hi all,

My vista box is getting a little slow from time. Like everything freezes on the computer, and then I have to wait a little bit and it comes back. Often this happens when firefox has been used for a while. I'm not sure if this is firefox's entire fault, so I was wondering what free program is out there that I can use to monitor what application is accessing the disk. I tried googling but just found a bunch of hard drive monitoring (temperature, fail rate, etc.) programs.

Answer:application hard drive usage program

You should be able to use the resource monitor built into Windows to see what programs are writing to disk.

Third party utilities are available as well, such as ProcessMonitor and FileMonitor.

The debate is simply this:

Ok, we both share an internet connection and he loves to download files with Grabits from our ISP's newsgroup. Many of these files are extremely large avi and mp3 files.

He told me that instead of downloading 8 of these files at one time and using all of the bandwidth, he will download just 4 instead (at once), then instisted that this would make it fair, by using only half of it.

My reasoning is that in most cases it will make no difference and he will still use 75 to 90% of it. I figured that 8 files would max it out and each file download would share bandwidth resources, and reducing the load to 4 files simultaneously would simply increase the resources for the 4 individual files (making them download faster etc...) therefore giving me no real advantage.

I ran a bandwidth test while he was downloading just 4 files and I had 60kbps available, I tried to play an internet game also and my latency was registering at 400 - 500 + which makes for poor game play (lagging bigtime).

Please help me settle this once and for all. Which one of us is right?

I downloaded a bespoke appn from a site called that allows you to put together your own pictures into specific book types and they then produce a proper coffee table stylebook, ideal for wedding pictures etc.

But for some reason as soon as I open the application it is trying to connect to the internet to check for updates as it is supposed to do and it cannot reach the server it's trying to. Similarly if you try and manually update it this happens.

I have allowed it as an exception in Windows Firewall so other thought is it's something to do with my router settings. Any suggestions? I can't understand why this would be the case though because AVG, Spybot, Adaware etc etc have never given me a problem like this and I've never had to manually configure my router in any way (it's a fairly standard Netgear one.)

I tried installing the same software at work and it worked straight away, so clearly it is something to do with my setup at home. Sigh....

I contacted Bob's Books and they said they've never had this problem before. And with the best will in the world they are not techies.

Any suggestions greatfully received as the (new) wife is hassling me to get it sorted so she can sort the wedding and honeymoon pictures out. Whoever said married life would be all bliss....

I've looked around quite a bit on both this forum and Google and can't seem to find an answer, so if this has been answered before, please forgive me and be so kind as to provide a link to a relevant topic.

I am using a TiddlyWiki stored on a USB flash drive. What I would like to do is set a parameter on the shortcut so that it always launches with a specific portable browser, also stored on the pen drive, rather than the defauly browser that is stored on the computer it is attached to.

Likewise, I have a few PDFs that I use regularly between machines, and would like to have them open using a portable PDF reader (Sumatra) which is also stored on the flash drive. That way, the PDF will always open to my last saved page, regardless of which machine I am using.

The computers I use are a home desktop PC (Win 7), home netbook (Win XP) and work laptop (Win XP).

If there is a different way to achieve this without using shortcut parameters, I would be more than happy to give it a whirl.

Hello all,

We've recently upgraded our switches from 10/100 over to FOUR Dell 2848 (GB Managed switches) and using one as a director (fiber uplink).

We are all on GB networks now and we've been running into issues tracking down what's hogging up most of our bandwidth (local area network) throughout our company.

We need to track down which machines are copying data to servers and vise versa.

Answer:** URGENT HELP ** Need to track down which machines taking more LAN bandwidth

If you look at the user's guide on Dell's support site:

On page 142, you'll see where you can pull stats on each port on the switch via the web GUI. The information isn't complete as it only reports the number of bytes/packets received on the particular interface not the sent traffic from the interface. So you'll have to see if this information is enough for you to track down the devices in question.

On my windows 7 awhile back I made a thread on a different site about a stop error I was getting intermittently relating to specific memory locations that seemed to point to Kernel files. NO one responded, I eventually set out to troubleshoot it myself, in my search I found programs like CPUZ, Rammnom or whatever its called for testing ram, and blue screen viewer for viewing blue screen logs. One other program that worked for me I found on a thread about a stop error just like the one I was getting mentioned a program you boot to off a flashdrive, if it detects driver or application incompatibilities or other similar errors, it would bluescreen showing the program in question with a bunch of information about it. After you fixed the issue, you did it again until no more stop errors appeared on boot. Then you would go into safe mode, open command prompt and reset it through specific commands that were application specific for that program, reboot normally, and it would boot through that program anymore. Does anyone know what that program is, its geared specifically for troubleshooting stop errors.

I had posted about this issue before in the Browsers & Mail section: ?IE cannot display the webpage? after each Windows logon
Though at this point I think this is a more fundamental issue and I need help from someone with in deep knowledge of the registry.

The issue:
After each Windows logon when I try to open a webpage I get the following message: ?IE cannot display the webpage?
I have to go to Tools ?> Internet options and then close the window by clicking OK to set the registry value correctely to be able to open webpages with IE (Firefox is not affected)

So far I was able to identify the registry key that controls the ?Automatically detect settings? check:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections\
Sub Key DefaultConnectionSettings

?Automatically detect settings? check not set
0008 01 XX XX XX XX XX XX XX

?Automatically detect settings? check set
0008 09 XX XX XX XX XX XX XX

By changing that value I can check or uncheck the setting.

The issue is that after a restart (or log off/log on) the value is reset to ?00? (=undefined?)
0008 00 XX XX XX XX XX XX XX

The question now is what resets this value an why.
Now I need to know how to track what accesses a given registry key. Is there any program that can do this?

Answer:Need help to track what modifies a specific registry key

SysInternals had a utility called RegMon which monitored registry changes in real-time.
I think it has been "retired" but you can still get it on CNET here: RegMon - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET

NOTE: I have not personally used this utility and do not know if it plays well with Windows 7.

Hi guys, im currently using pfsense and in most aspects, i love it.

Its free, you get good support from the forums, it does almost everything i want it to....except one fairly major thing:

Bandwidth monitoring and control.

While there are a few programs that allow interface-based control and monitoring, there doesnt seem to be any way (as yet) to reliably monitor how much bandwidth is being used by each IP address, or to set download/upload limits, or limit the speed per IP.

BandwidthD looked like it would be a great solution to half this problem, but after an extensive bounty on the forums, it seems to be settled that there are some very fatal flaws in it that are not likely to be corrected in the short term.

Now i have used ClarkConnect (for a few weeks), and while this supports IP-specific speed control, i couldnt get a reliable measure of how much each IP was downloading over a 30-day period. Plus, its not free and id rather find an open source solution if at all possible.

Basically what i want, is pfsense, but with the following features:

- Ability to record how much each IP address is downloading and uploading per month
- How much the WAN connection is being utilised at any particular point in time (like the pfsense Traffic Graph)
- Ability to limit the speed available to each IP address (mostly to help VoIP work better)...e.g. 10kB/s to and 50kB/s to

- Ability to set caps (per IP) after a certain download quot... Read more

Two quick things, one Clarkconnect has a free version and two they have the source code available.

Also, there used to be a pretty nice addon for measuring bandwidth by host they I ran before I switched from Clarkconnect to another product (Endian) that I found from surfing the forums. I'll see if I can figure out what the heck it was called.

Or maybe I'll find it's the first post in the networking forum for Clarkconnect, good luck either way.

I'm clueless when it comes to everything networking so I apologize if this is a stupid question. From my googling I found alot of people suggesting setting different networked PC's to low priority and high priority but that's not what I'm looking for. I want to know if I can limit my PC's upload and download bandwidth to specific speeds. Here's the deal:

Right now we have the "Mega" internet service with speeds of 6000/512 and we can save $15/mo by switching to the ecomony speed which is 1024/128. So I'd like to see if i can't limit my PC to 1024/128 through my router or some other software to see if the speed drop would affect us. My router is a D-Link DIR-655. Any ideas?

Answer:Is it possible to limit your upload/download bandwidth to specific speeds?

You can limit your upload speed with the DIR-655. In the web interface go to the advanced tab, click QOS Engine, uncheck automatic uplink speed, and enter your desired value in manual uplink speed.

To limit download speed you will need a more advanced router.

If you have a spare PC (w/ 2 NICs) laying around and don't mind spending some time working on this, an x86-based router such as pfSense or m0n0wall can limit both upload and download.

Not sure exactly what you mean by "side"
I don't think there is a way to distinguish between you or your son using your ISP. There are timers to keep track of online usage. Maybe that would help? If you subtract your online time from the total, the remainder would be your son's. There are some freeware. Log Timer is one. You can search for others.

Recently our isp put a cap on our internet usage. Our Isp has a usage tracking page but it only updates every 42 hours and after 2 days it says we have already used 17gb. Really wanna track the usage and see what is exactly using so much internet. I have already tried using NetWorx but im pretty sure its only tracking the usage on my PC and not my router. Anything i can use to track all usage going in and out of my router?

Answer:How to track internet usage?

Check to see if your router or modem has usage software or a usage tracking function in their driver software.

Hi all

This is quite a urgent request that i need to provide a solution for. At some of our sites we have 1 win xp machine with a adsl line (broadband) with provide internet. everyone on that pc log on using the same username and password as there are apps that they all use. My question is, is there some application that i can install on the machine that can regulate internet browsing where you need to put in username and password to go to the net or anything that i can do to track internet usage on the pc as it is getting out of control.

Thanks in advance

Answer:Track internet usage on XP

All corporate firewall or proxy servers have a system log option.
If you have a system log server you may see all network activities such web browsing, email send/received, denied traffic

You may also want to consider setting up Websense

Pretty much an easy task.

Just want to deploy this on a domain.

Something that will track usage, idle activity.

I want to be able to view reports of total usage- and hopefully be able to break it down by day, week, etc.
Prefer something lightweight, free, something they can't shut off too easily.

My question is, is it possible to track the usage of other computers or IP who are using the wireless network? Issit possible to limit their usage or slow it down or anything? Basically, I would like to have evidence to proove that someone in my house has used up so much.

I hope there is a solution. Thank you for your help.

Hi guys, Trying to figure out where a memory leak is and lack of information is a problem. I understand that the memory usage is comprised of the processes shown in task manager and also there is the cached allocation to speed things up but something is using memory that cannot be accounted for between those two. The main task manager memory usage counter will slowly go up (takes several days to chomp it's way through 16GB of RAM) but running quick n dirty maths on all the processes leaves (after several days) a massive shortfall. The performance of the system gets quite bad once this leak reaches the point where the windows cache is all gone and there is nothing but what the applications had already taken plus this boogey monster allocation. Is there a program which could potentially shed more light on exactly where the ram is being held? Obviously it's possible to allocate memory in such a way that does not show in task manager and I guess I want to show those allocations in broad daylight. thnks! -cc

I have the following config-> Windows XP Professional SP2 which I have been using for the last 3 years.-> Updated Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 running for the last 1 year.-> No new software were installed in the last month that I can recall of.Suddenly I get this problem:1. I ran an application one day (it was winrar), and nothing starts.2. Task manager shows CPU usage as 50 (I have dual core), while memory usage remains at 84k3. After a few days vlcplayer.exe started giving the same problem-> So, I reinstalled windows (formatted my C drive and installed a fresh copy). -> Everything worked fine. I was using Irfanview.exe with no problems, but then one day again, IrfanView.exe did not start. Same problem : CPU usage was 50% while memory remained really low.-> I uninstalled it from C:/program files and installed a new copy in C:/program files --- this did not solve the problem-> I uninstalled it again from C:/program files and installed to D:/ Now it works fine...-> But now again I got the same problem with media player.exeI have tried a virus scan with Kaspersky (updated) and a scan with spybot. They both came out to be clean.Any ideas?I cant reinstall Windows as that did not solve the problem.

Answer:CPU usage increases to max (while memory usage doesnt) when I run a application

I dont know if this helps: I read somewhere about creating a drive image for easy backup. So I tried DriveImageXML, but it gave an error regarding CRC check which related to bad sectors i suppose. I ran a scan disk before installing a fresh copy of Windows. Obviously, this hasnt helped either.

Hello all. I have myself a rather vexing issue going on with my operating system (XP x64 Edition SP2) that has me baffled, especially since it has survived an almost foolproof barrage of fixes.

Basically, I noticed very recently that one of my programs that requires an internet connection is unable to connect to the internet, despite having worked fine for almost 2 years now. I blew it off at first, and when I went back again to try it I had the same problem. I ended up downloading another, similar program, and had that problem again. I noticed after this, that some of my games (and other applications) that require an internet connection to update and the like, also are now unable to connect to the internet to perform their functions. Even one of my malware scanners, which requires that it is up to date before being able to run, could not update itself (I manually updated it).

Not sure if this is relevant, but my clock was reset by itself to July 1st 2005, and after I manually reset it, it didn't change itself back (yet).

So in a nutshell, I did some research and found one other guy with a similar problem to my own, which he identified as a worm in his WINDOWS registry. He didn't specify how he removed it.

I've since run my anti-virus software (BitDefender), CCleaner, Ad-aware, Malwarebytes, Spybot S&D, HijackThis, and am currently scanning with SUPERAntiSpyware and I've had no luck. Malwarebytes discovered some potentially false positives ignored by Ad... Read more

Hey guys! I live in an apartment building, and everyone uses the same network which makes it very difficult to limit my bandwidth usage. I don't want to hog all of it, because people work here in the same building, and I can get in trouble for using more than 2 GB of Bandwidth per day.

I have already exceeded the bandwidth limit multiple times already, and I need some tips on how to avoid that in the future. It can be really difficult to stay within my limit, considering how much things I do on the computer which includes downloading, watching YouTube videos, and gaming. Those aren't much, but they take up lots of bandwidth. Thankfully I never stream, and I don't plan on trying it out, because all I need is something to contribute to the amount of bandwidth I already use.

Having recently received a nippy letter from my ISP warning me about a ridiculously high usage of bandwidth ( 40Gb per month, although there is no way I could have used anything near this) I have downloaded a meter which gives me an ongoing and real time record of bandwidth usage. I have noticed when using my PC that the meter indicates a fairly high download and upload usage, even when there is relatively little activity. On the other hand, when using my laptop, the meter indicates much less usage. Any explanation for this? I am using a P4 2.8ghz system with 512 RAM and Windows XP SP2. I do run a secure computer (AVG on and updated, Zone Alarm, Spybot's Tea Timer, Win Patrol, AdAware & Spybot run regularly, occasionally I double check things at PandaScan online). I am on a DSL connection behind a router. Never had any revealed spyware or virus problems (other than tracking cookies).

At times my CPU usage shoots up to a high percentage (90 - 100%, occasionally dropping slightly) and remains there indefinitely. Here is the puzzling part - when I check the list of processes (sorted by CPU) the only number over 5% is System Idle Process. In other words the sorted list will have System Idle Process using 90% or more (which should be "unused") but at the same time the CPU Usage at the bottom is at or near 100%. How can this happen? Can there be a hidden program using CPU time? Could it be a rootkit? Hardware problem?

This has been very hard to diagnose because while it shows up regularly, it does not show up all the time. I have thought it solved several times only to have it show up again. Here are what might be related factors ...

It most often happens shortly after booting up. Within a minute or less of the last programs loading CPU spikes and remains high.

If I quickly "Engage Internet lock" (in Zone Alarm) just after booting it does NOT occur. Even if I un-engage the internet lock just a minute later.

It does not always happen after boot-up. This is frustrating b... Read more

So my wife calls me in to the computer the other day and has me look at something on her screen. Dancing suggestively across the screen was a semi-nude woman. Now, although I'm always good for a bit of skin on a beautiful woman I had to wonder where this came from because I didn't install it and since my wife was a bit shocked to see it as well I figured she didn't install it. I ask them where this app came from (it was called StripSaver) and of course they both denied installing it.

I am running Windows XP Pro on the pc in my sig. I need to know what's the best way to track internet usage? Is there something in Windows XP Pro that I can use to figure out who is going where and what they might be doing? Or is there some other software out there that I can get to track this sort of thing?

Do you run any P2P software like Kaza, Bearshare, etc? Do you have a Torrent client installed?

Any of these can use a lot of network bandwidth,m even when you are not actively using them.

How does it behave if you boot to Safe Mode with Networking? If better then something is starting at boot that is causing the problem.

Advanced startup options - XP
Advanced startup options - Vista
Advanced startup options - Windows 7

Use msconfig to determine what is causing the problem

These are good tutorials on using msconfig in XP, Vista or Windows 7:
How to use msconfig in Windows XP
How to use msconfig in Windows Vista
How to use msconfig in Windows 7

Click on Start then Run, type msconfig and press Enter.
Click on the Startup tab, record what is currently starting then click the Disable All button.
Reboot and see if it runs better.
If yes then use msconfig to enable several items at a time till you find the culprit.

If no, start msconfig and click on the Services tab.
Check the Hide All Microsoft Services box, record what is currently starting then click the Disable All button.
Again, do a regular boot, see if it runs normal.
If yes then use msconfig to enable services till you find the culprit.

Once you've found the culprit, uninstall it or find out how to eliminate it from your system. Simply disabling it in msconfig is a temporary fix at best.

The administrator is constantly complaining that using personal webcams and downloading is slowing down the network connection for the other users. Is there a program that I can use to see how much of the total network bandwidth my computer is using at any given time?

I noticed that when I ctrl-alt-delete and go to the "network" tab, there is a "network utilization" chart. Is that percentage there the percentage of the total network bandwidth or is that something different?

That network utilization chart in the task manager shows the % utilization of your NIC, i.e. 10Mbps over a 100Mbps NIC will show up as 10%.

Through out random times in the day my internet download speed spikes at around 2MB/s resulting in a usage of over 15 GB a day. I've run Malwarebytes and tdsskiller and they have shown nothing. I know these internet spikes correspond to svchost.exe (netsvcs) PID 520 going to and akami technologies.

I recently, within the last month, bought a brand new laptop computer with Vista Basic Home 32 bit I believe. It is connected to the internet via wireless connection through a router connected to the cable modem and wired connection desktop PC running XP SP3.

The Laptop with Vista is hogging all the bandwidth. In just typical web browsing, reading the news, checking email, peeking in on a couple social networking sites.. over 3 gigs of bandwidth was used.

Any tips on how to limit this? Just how much bandwidth should be consumed in regular web browsing activities?

Answer:Vista Bandwidth Usage?

The amount of bandwidth used on a network depends on which PC is accessing it. If only one PC is actively using the connection, regardless of OS, than that one will get the bandwidth. There are background tasks and applications that will use a connection for various reasons without you knowing about it. How are you measuring the bandwidth? Is it measuring the bytes sent between the PC and the router or from the router to the cable modem?

I've noticed a large amount of downloading/uploading going on through my LAN (ie, 1 Mb in 5 mins) when it should be idle. I've read the stickies and followed the directions given.
Here is my HJT log. I do not use IE, by the way, unless necessary. I use Firefox. So anything I can remove pertaining to that I would like to remove.

Thanks in advance for looking at it and taking the time to evaluate it.

I don't see much showing in that log, we can try to see what may be the cause by running some diagnostic tools. First, though....

You don't seem to have a firewall program installed. Using a third-party firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Select one of these, or another of your choice: Comodo Personal Firewall

Then do this:
Download combofix.exe to your desktop.
Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Hi I have a cyber cafe set up with 10 windows xp machines. My monthly internet usage cap is 15 gb. I want to limit the bandwidth for each computer. Currently the ADSL router is connected directly to the switch. So there is no security as such. Is there any way i could limit the net useage on each computer? Like maybe reduce the speed or not allow downloading or anything of that sort? Because I want to limit my daily usage to not more than 500 mb. Please help.. Thanks!!

I have been going through bandwidth like crazy the last two or so months. I really have no idea what's causing it. I have tried a variety of virus/malware scanners as I initially thought it was spyware. Turns out it wasn't. Next I disabled as much as possible via msconfig and turned off automatic updates. Still no change. I even reinstalled my entire OS and installed only the software I need to survive i.e. Alibre Design, MoI, Keyshot, Z88 (these are CAD programs), Firefox, Thunderbird and Mass Effect 2. Still the downloading continues...

Here the problem: if I connect to the internet to, say, send an email in Thunderbird I'll end up using approx 100Mb in 10 minutes without opening any other program, incl the browser. I can see from my network manager that something is being downloaded but it doesn't say what program is causing it. 500Mb cost me ZAR160... adds up when you purchase a new bundle every 3 days

I'm clutching at straws here. I have been to 3 different IT chaps and they are stumped too. I'm thinking (maybe hoping) that it is Alibre Design's update system that has something to do with this. No-one else has this problem though.

For interests sake, my laptop has the exact same problem. It is setup exactly the same as my desktop except it doesn't have Mass Effect installed.

Also, my wife's laptop is set up the same as both my PC but without the CAD stuff and she doesn't have this problem...

Help me please!!

Answer:Excessive bandwidth usage

Use Windows 7's Resource Monitor (type it in at the Start menu) and you should be able to see IP addresses you're communicating with.

I have a dell poweredge 830 (3.0 dual core pentium, 2gb ram, 2x160gb hdd in raid 1, dual port intel gigabit card). I'm trying to find a router OS that logs bandwidth by ips on the lan. I tried untangle and clearos neither of which have a feature (or one that I can find) that logs the bandwidth by ip. Apparently pfsense has a package you can install but I have never been able to get pfsense to work on this pc, it always errors in one way or another (on the 2.0rc3 I can't access the web page, it says it is missing a file). Is there something else I should look at or am I missing something in the ones I have tried?

Answer:Router OS to log bandwidth usage by IP?

hi all

ok, i found several old posts on this, but none really helps.

i need to monitor bandwidth usage. not on my pc! either on entire network or, at least, off my router.

i am running IPTV service, and am limited by Comcast to 250GB per month per modem.

I have found a bunch of bandwidth monitors for pc, various complexity. but they do not show general bandwidth use. we have that IPTV STB, plus my son's pc, and some other devices that use internet occasionally.

i tried to use PRSLG monitor, but it is way beyond me technically, besides, it does not show bandwidth usage. it has a sensor that needs to be added to program to monitor for this, but that's where i hit the brick wall, as i am not a programmer to fathom the wisdom of doing it.

so, does anyone know of a fairly easy to use program that will do this? is there any way to do those reports off my Belkin router? as all traffic goes through it anyway.

and no, i do not have usage monitor in my Comcast account. it disappeared as of yesterday, for good or bad.

Answer:bandwidth usage monitor

I do believe you can use dd-wrt on a number of Belkin routers to monitor usage

You will have to flash the firmware of your router so do your research and be careful. If you mess up you could end up with a useless brick instead of a router.

I'm setting up a personal network at my house, the only problem I have is my little brother uses kazaa and bittorrent madly. My question is how do I limit the amount of bandwidth he gets? Can I set it up for him max download is like 50k and upload like 25k? Oh yes, one little problem here though. The dirtly little monster uses a mac with OS X.

Answer:Limiting Bandwidth Usage

do you have a router setup yet?

if not, install clarkconnect, it has features built into it for bandwidth limiting, as well as it is a very functional and secure firewall, and also has many many more features.

ok, so i share a broadband internet connection w/ my roommate. I have a feeling that he's hosting files(probably bittorrent, he has altered the router settings to open ports for specific bittorrent software) because my internet connection seems to crap out when he comes home or is home. for example, just the other day i woke up and i was getting dial up speeds for a few hours then speeds went back to normal. he comes home, spends 5 minutes in his room and the internet service craps out again. my ISP caps our ups/downs to 3megs/700kilos. i'm thinking he was dling/uloading something overnight that was hogging bandwidth. the dl/ul stopped and bandwidth usage opened up until he came home and started a new transfer.

I have a wireless router (he uses the wireless and i'm wired). when the speed slows down sometimes i'll restart the router and sometimes that works. i think it works because either my router is messed up (i doubt it, but possible) or when i restart it he loses his wireless connectivity. I've asked him if he's hosting files and he says no. The wireless access is secure. i don't broadcast the ssid and i have a WEP key required.

so, is there some software that i can leave running that will give me bandwidth usage for all the IPs allocated by my router? i checked my router settings and it doesn't have a bandwidth monitoring log. I've given ethereal a shot but for some reason it can't pick up any info involving his IP,... Read more

Answer:a way to monitor bandwidth usage?

My first gut reaction would be to lock him out. Change the wep/wpa keys on your wireless, and the ssid. If he wants fast internet then he can pay for it himself and get his own connection. I had to do that when I had a roomate. He had his, I had mine. Cox had no issues hooking up 2 modems.

Backstory, air card with 20GB monthly limit is used for internet access. "Something" happened and while unattended, 12.6 GB of "something" was downloaded/uploaded during the day between 7 and 4. I went through the Malware removal forum and have been declared healed, but I need software on a per computer basis to make sure than after say 200MB of daily usage, the network activity outside the LAN is cutoff until it is reset or upped. I understand Netlimiter should be able to do this but it would not run on this Dell XP Pro SP3 machine. I have encountered several programs that would not work correctly before on this machine. Anybody got anything else to suggest that might do the job but not be unduly complicated. Thanks.

Maybe this will work?

Hey Guys.

My problem is my PC is constantly hammering my home network, constantly receiving loads of bytes, even though I have no browsers open or programs which should use it. I tried running the machine in Safe Mode with Networking so there would only be a few processes running and it still consumes a lot of bandwidth. I'm guessing some port has been hijacked somehow, but can't ascertain why or how.

I have a DELL C810 laptop running Windows 2000 Professional. I initially believed the problem to be caused by a Trojan but none of the Antivirus (McAfee) or Anti-Spyware (Ad-Aware) detect the true cause of the problem. I have deleted all of the files they suggest but the problem still exists.

I have attached a HijackThis log taken after I ran a Virusscan and an Ad-Aware scan using the settings suggested in other threads and the latest definition files. If someone could at least eliminate any potential problems there I'd appreciate it.

Also if there's any ideas how I can locate the problem that would be brilliant.

Thanks in advance.

Hi I am contemplating whether or not to let my neighbors use my internet connection.

One of them uses Skype . I noticed that it is always on on hi Mac. is this a bandwidth hog?

I have a good DSL connection but am pretty anal about my bandwidth.

Answer:Skype and Bandwidth usage

It depends on how many calls they make with Skype if it will be a hog. For a few calls you are only talking about a few MB (As far as i know) But if that is their main source of communication with the outside. Then it can get hefty.

Plus you dont know if they will download anything. They might say that they wont then do it. Since it isnt their connection they wont get into trouble.
