Can't get Dell Inspiron 1525 WIFI to work after Operating System reinstall

Question: Can't get Dell Inspiron 1525 WIFI to work after Operating System reinstall

I just reinstalled Vista with the factory Reinstallation DVD that came with the computer (Dell Inspiron 1525) and now I can't get the WI-FI to work. "Network adapters" does not appear in the Device Manager. From what I've read, it seems as though I need to install the wireless/WIFI drivers, but there are three problems: 1) The Dell support site with the drivers doesn't seem to be working (please provide direct link if you can get a working one. 2) I don't know EXACTLY what drivers to download. 3) I don't know how to install the drivers once downloaded (from what I've read, it's apparently not as simple as just double-clicking and installing.

Your help would be greatly appreciated, as this is my cousin's computer that I'm helping him with.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Can't get Dell Inspiron 1525 WIFI to work after Operating System reinstall

There is a service tag # on the Dell computer that should take you to the correct drivers.

I began this project merely trying to start this machine, I found I could not get past the user password on this counterfeit installation. I decided to install a legitimate version of xp. I found that the cd disk drive in the machine did not work. I plugged in an external cd drive and found that the machine did not read the drive properly. I tried an external floppy drive and it seems to register. I was wondering if there were a way to access the hard drive with a startup disk on the floppy drive and somehow format c drive so I could later reboot xp pro from a disk. (skipping the previous user password) I tried to use administrator to change password but failed. I attempted to access the bios but also failed. Instead of waiting for another external cd rom drive to get the ball rolling, I was wondering if this could be done by floppy drive.

Hello! I've been having issues with my wife's Inspiron 1525 ever since I put Win7 64-bit on it. At first when I would minimize a window the wallpaper would look like it was a set of mini blinds. I updated the driver (don't remember what to) and now occasionally when a window gets minimized the wallpaper gets pixelated/grainy/noisy. If I open the wallpaper in any picture viewer it displays just fine. I've searched and searched and can't find any one else who's had a similar problem.

I've also been experiencing wifi connection issues. At random times the 1525 will lose its wifi connection. I'll run the network config wizard and it will fix the issue saying that the problem was something with the DNS server. I have a Netgear WNR3500 Rev.1 with the latest firmware. I read somewhere that this could be caused by the router PIN so I disabled the PIN and it worked for a while but not it is dropping the connection again.

Any help would be appreciated as my wife gets frustrated when things like this me make my wife happy!

Ok this seems like several different issues. I have the exact same computer and the firsat problem sounds like the wrong video driver. (you probably have the intel 845 chipset) If you go to intel and get the latest driver that should help with that problem

The second problem I would bet is being casued by using "homegroup" for your Networking. ... Read more

Hi, I've just reformatted my Inspiron N5010 laptop, reinstalled WIndows 7 and now my Wifi doesnt work. Been trolling through the web I believe the issue here is with the driver as the attachment in Device Manager. I tried clicking on Software Update but it could not find the anything online. I tried to use Dell System Detect but it says format issue until I found a post in this forum stating to install Microsoft Net Framework. Title of post is Dell System Detect (DSD) launch error. It seems to have installed but when I run DSD nothing pops up. I was hoping DSD can help me identify the right driver. Can someone please help me with DSD, or maybe help me identify the right driver required? I hope I'm on the right track to resolve the WIfi issue.

So my dell inspiron laptop has been running a little bit slow lately apposed to it's normal fast a quick loading rate. I decided something had gone wrong so asked the computer to check the system for me. My fear had become reality.
The pre-boot assessment came up with the error code:
I have researched this and apparently, if you have this error your Hard-drive is Kaput. But it still runs, just a little slower. As it still works OK, i want to avoid replacing the hard-drive as the internet advises, and just to maybe re-install windows or whatever simple process needs doing to fix this.
So how can i fix this?? Kind of desperate here, i don't want the hard-drive getting worse and then really does go bye bye.

Thanks, Mastershape1995

My Mini will not boot up past the dell logo and intial boot i get an error message that says:

PXE-E61: media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM
operating system not found

There are no cable pluged in to it other than the power cord.
I went into the BIOS and the HDD reads Omb.

Anyone have teh magic answer?

Answer:Dell Inspiron Mini 9 No operating system found?

Hi Capi580,

It sounds as if you're experiencing hard drive failure. You can try to re-seat the drive, but the fact that the BIOS can see the drive but sees zero data/space leads me to believe the drive is dead. Is the computer still under warranty? Dell is pretty good about sending out replacement parts.

You can check the warranty status of your net book at In the upper right hand corner, there's a drop down menu that says warranty information > warranty status.

Dell's technical support number is 1-877-293-1197. Have your express service code from the bottom of the net book ready. you're going to speak to a tech who's going to walk you through a few trouble shooting steps. after he determines your HD is bad, they'll usually send you out a replacement drive, assuming the computer is under warranty.

FYI, PXE is for booting from the network. The computer is only trying that since it can't read the HD.

I have a Dell Inspiron that won't start. It says it is missing its operating system.

Using the Windows 7 DVD that came with the machine I went through the repair Windows procedure 3 times. The first time it searched for restore points of which there are none because the machine has Rollback Rx installed instead. It then restarted with no change. I went through the same process but this time it said it had repaired Windows however; restarting gave me the same missing OS message. On the 3rd attempt it displayed the restored OS as being on D:\. I ran the diagnostic tool and it said no errors were found. Restarting gave the same error.

How can I get the machine to boot from D:\ or move the OS back to C:\ please?

Answer:Dell Inspiron won't start. Missing operating system error

How did that happened? Did you format your hard drive or something? How many drives do you have maybe its installed on another one.

If all else fails the only thing left to do is to do a system recovery or factory restore, if you are looking for a clean start then follow this guide: Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

I have re-installed the operating system on my Inspiron 1545 a few times now with varying degrees of success.  I used the operating system disc and the drivers and utilities disc which came with the inspiron when I bought it several years ago.  My problems relate to the utilities disc. I am uncertain as to whether I need to reinstall the drivers etc which are on the disc and also as to whether I need to do this in any particular order.  I want to keep Windows 7 also,  as installing later versions seems to create problems.  Problems also arise when I access drivers and downloads on the drivers and downsloads section of the Dell site,  as those on the site are newer than my laptop and compatibility issues seem to occur because of that.  I don't want to use the inspiron for anything other than occasional internet searching etc as I have a newer laptop.

Can anyone help?

My home desktop is connected to a wireless router through AT&T U-verse and it's broadcasting just fine. I can see the name and everything when I try and connect on my laptop but there is always an error that brings me to a troubleshooting screen. I've made sure the password is correct by going to Start-Run, IPCONFIG and then typing my IP address into the address bar in my browser. I dont know what else I can do, I feel like I've tried everything! Help please.

Answer:Laptop (Win7 Dell Inspiron 1525) won't connect to desktop (XP Dell) wireless router

Sometimes, you need to replace the router.
Sometimes, you can call your service provider and ask them to take a look on line to see if the subscription needs to be refreshed.
But often, all that is needed (despite the fact that it is a lot of work) is to uninstall your existing system, then reboot, and reinstall everything.
You might also find success by looking at your device manager in Windows to see if you have any grey, red, or yellow flags by any related device. That may show you have a permanent hardware failure if you cannot restore it, then you are off to the store or your provider for a new cable modem or router.

Hello. I am new to this forum and desparately need some kind people to please help before I throw the computer in front of a train.
I have Dell Inspiron 2600 (old) laptop running Windows XP Home. Too much software was loaded onto the computer and it now has "zero" memory. i have tried everything to fix the problem, to no avail. "Add and Remove Programs" runs so slowly (if at all) that I cannot get the programs off. I managed to pull data off that I really need and wanted to simply restore the computer to factory settings. Dell sent me a CD for reinstallation windows and gave me some intructions (if you can call them that). I have tried several times to run the CD. It gives me two options: 1) updating the system or 2) installing. It tells me that reinstalling will cause the loss of data and programs (which is what I want). Each time I run it, however, it tells me that I don't have enough SPACE to do it! How, PLEASE, can I get this computer back to factory settings and take off all of the junk. I only use the laptop online when my PC is down and I've run several virus checks, so it isn't that - it's just full.
Is there a way from the c:\ prompt to reset the computer? Is there any other way? I am not a computer wiz but I can follow directions.
I'm praying that some kind soul will take pity on me and I thank you in advance for ANY help you can give me.
Thank you.

Question: Dell Inspiron 1525

Hi All,I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 that has completely died.  I'm not sure what happened to it exactly, as there is not evidence of a drop or a spill, but there are no signs of life whatsoever.  I took the battery out, and plugged in the adapter.  I know the adapter works fine as the little green light comes on when it's plugged in, and I tried it in another laptop in which it worked.  When I hit the power button nothing happens.  No lights turn on, or flash, no sounds are made...nothing.  It's lifeless.  I was thinking about just hitting eBay and ordering a new motherboard, but does anyone know if this is the right thing to do?  I don't have the $100 bucks to throw down without being certain so I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.  Thanks

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1525

Very difficult to diagnose the problem when there is absolutely no life in the computer. I assume the little green light that you are referring to  is on the adapter. It does sound like an absence of power getting to the computer. The adapter may show itself to be functional but if the connection is faulty it will not recharge the battery (therefore the battery would eventually be without charge). Also if such were the case the adapter itself would not deliver power to the contact on the computer--which is where the issue could be--the contact at the computer. Even if the fault were an overheating issue it should come on if only briefly. Normally it is not a good idea for the average user to try and delve into the innards of a laptop so be cautious about doing that yourself. When it did work before was there some indication (before actually turning it on ) that it had life? truenorth

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1525

Try the repair option.

There, you should find an option to run Startup Repair. Try that, maybe even more than once.

You should also see an option to open a command window. In that window, run a disk check:

chkdsk /r

Note the results, and in particular, if any bad clusters are found (Bytes in Bad Clusters).

Answer:DELL Inspiron 1525

Easiest and obvious answer is to ask your friend to contact the person who gave it to him and get the password.....

Other than that, is this the Administrator account username? If so, try entering no password and just clicking OK. If no password was set this would get you in.

There are ways to reset account passwords on Vista. However, as you may agree the legitimacy of telling users on an open forum how to change passwords or bypass them is open to abuse, so details on how you exactly do this won't be given at

Please accept this post from a non-techie person. I have a 1525 which for some reason has changed the way of showing the open files / programmes when ?minimised? on the taskbar. They are no longer showing in a line next to each other on the taskbar near the START button. Instead they have become ?stacked? to the bottom right, (just left of the hidden icons). At the moment I have an IE browser window and 6 different programmes open. I can only see the IE icon and the Word icon. Next to them are 2 small ?arrow heads?, one facing up, the other down. When I click on the up or down head, 2 other open programme icons show up. Is anyone able to tell me how to change things back to ?normal? !! Many thanks for any help Marconi Ps I will just say that this morning the system refused to shut down. Instead, it just ran in ?logging off? mode. I resolved it by using Safe Mode which then allowed me to shut down properly everytime I tried afterwards.

Maybe right click the taskbar. You will see a couple of vertical broken lines,Left click the mouse on one and drag it to the left and see if that helps.Remember to go back and lock the Taskbar.Or right click Taskbar.Toolbars.And make sure Quicl launch is ticked.

My sister has a Dell inspiron 1525, which has stopped working. When you turn it on the lights power on and you can hear the fan spinning and hard drive starting up, but it nothing comes on screen and the computer just restarts. She says she dropped something on it but I'm not sure what anyway, she got a new laptop but if I can fix this one its mine. So does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

Oh yeah I've had it apart and nothing appears damaged in anyway.
Thanks for reading, hope you can help.

Answer:Broken Dell Inspiron 1525

Where about in the boot order does the PC get to be fore it restarts or is it that as you mention nothing shows on the screen?

If possible try and get into Safe Mode (tap F8 at boot until the safe mode menu lists)

Try and see if you can enter the BIOS, the key/s to press should flash up quickly when you boot the PC (likely to be F2, DEL or Fn+F1 keys), but if nothing shows on screen you may not be able to do this.

To test if the hardware is possibly all ok and its just Windows thats broken, try a Linux liveCD and Ubuntu is good, just need to burn the downloaded ISO to a CD and use this free app ImgBurn to do this, once the ISO has burned to CD pop it in the drive and boot the PC, if luckily the BIOS is set to boot from CDROM first then it may boot to the linux cd, if not and you cannot access the BIOS due to nothing onscreen then its going to be difficult.

Hello, I am hoping someone can help me as my computer is out of warranty.  On Thursday, my Dell Inspiron 1525 (bought in 2008) running Vista Operating System was working perfectly.  No issues at all.  On Friday morning, I went to turn on the computer and the 2 blue lights on the bottom left (the power and the one beside it) light up, the computer sounds like it is going to boot and then it beeps once and dies.  It will continue to do this over and over every few seconds until I turn off the power manually.
I have tried the trick of taking out the battery and the cord, pressing the power button and then plugging the battery and cord back in, but it still did not work.  The computer will not boot using just the cord (and not the battery) and vice versa.  Does anyone have any ideas on what could be happening or how I could fix this?
Thank you in advance for any help you could offer.

So I have used WEP, generating my own code, and it says all okay. However when I click on connect it fails, saying possibly a weak signal, yet the signal strength is recorded as 'Excellent'.

I bought my dell inspiron almost 2 years ago and it will not start up.
When I turn on my laptop, it tells me that it needs to can for start-up problems and even after that it will not work.

So I tried re-booting it yesterday. Done and it worked fine for 6 hours. Turned on my laptop today it just tells me it has not been shut down properly. It also showed this message:

Windows Logon Corrupt File
The dile or directory "_____" is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the ??disk utility (sorry i took a picture of the msg but its blurred)

I have to push the power button to restart my laptop many times and sometimes it will show the login window where I typed in my password and it will just freeze there but running Safe Mode is okay for me. I kinda dropped my laptop 2 days ago, can that be one of the reasons why?

Someone please help me!!

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1525: HELP! will not start- up!

Sound like a hard drive problem! If you can access to your data then back it up immediately!
- First try to login in a command prompt mode (press F8 during start and select Safe Mode with Command prompt to boot in MS-DOS mode), once in run the command chkdsk /f /r, it will check your hard drive and It'll try to fix bad sectors.
- Secondly (if you can't login)Try with a Live CD like Hiren's Boot CD or Windows MiniPE and run the same Command on it.
- Thirdly try a utility called WD Diagnostic, It's a Western Digital diagnostic tool, and maybe it can fix the problem.
- To discard a Hard Drive failure you can also remove the HD from the laptop and connect it to a normal PC (if the HD is a SATA drive) and try to access your files through the PC OS.
- and try to boot the laptop with a linux live CD like Ubuntu and without a HD connected, if the laptop works well then maybe the HD is broken or the sata/ide port on the motherboard is.

PD: Sorry about my english! I hope you can understand me

Good luck with your laptop! Cheers!

Hello all,

I just finished wiping a friends laptop with a fresh copy of Windows XP Pro SP3. A couple days later I went to use it after it installed Microsoft Office 2007 Pro Plus. IT was extremely slow afterwards. Extremely slow means it took 15 minutes just to pull up the Start Menu. I removed all traces of Office and it was still slow so I did a clean install on Windows Vista (Which it shipped with) however the install itself is taking ages as well... Can anyone tell me what has happened??? I am at a loss and I just want this thing to start working again. I have also tried resetting the BIOS back to default settings and still nothing!

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1525 very slow

Could be a simple hardware problem..make sure everything in bios is reading correctly (amount of ram, CPU clock speed, etc).
a fam member had a 1525, and it died spectaculary. Maybe they just arent good laptops.
If its not the above, IDK. new OS would be first suggestion, but apparently you did that already.

I am helping a friend that has a 18 month old Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop running Vista Home Premium. Her hard drive is failing and it will be necessary to replace the hard drive.

I have been able to go in and use an external hard drive to save all of her picture, docements, etc.

I also saved the restoration partition that was put on the hard drive.

Here is my question. When I install a new hard drive, I assume that I should next install the Vista Home Premium from the included disk. Does it make any sense to reintroduce the restoration partition which I have saved on the hard drive. I could set up the partition when I first install Vista Home Premium.

My thinking is that I then could start the restoration process and thus have the computer installed with all the programs it originally came with.

I would need help with the following:

1) How to set up the restoration partition when I first set up Vista on the new hard drive. I can determine from the size of the files within the partition
how big it should be.

2) How to start the restoration process after I have the files for the restoration partition installed. on the computer. (I know on some computers
you would choose F10 or F11 to start the restoration process!)

3) Is it really worth the bother to go through all of this. I DO HAVE THE VISTA INSTALLATION CD AND THE DRIVERS!!!

Thanks for any and all thoguhts on this. I appreciate all your ideas.

My Laptop over heated today and I removed the back plate to gain access to clean out the fan ect... Once I tried to boot the computer up, everything flashed at me like always but then turned off, the screen remained black.
I?ve done a little research via googled and I have tried .....

1) Removing the AC power lead and the battery and switched them about to see if it would resolve, but resulted in the same issue as stated above.
2) Holding the power button down for 10/20 seconds without the laptop having power and with power. Then powering up.
3) I?ve pulled the HDD and the memory as instructed by the Dell support site (When power was disconnected) and booted, switch the memory about and booted a number of time. Everything was re-connected properly.

This is driving me totally mad as I need the laptop due to work and other reasons, I paid £550 about four years ago so it?s no longer under warranty, also none of the settings where changed before the issue began.

I would be grateful for any advice or assistance,So what is the possible issue that I?m having, is my motherboard fried or is it something else?

Answer:Upgrading my Dell Inspiron 1525

Do you know if that machine is Win 7 compatible at all, drivers aside?

I wouldn't get frantic about drivers.

Your Windows install disc should have most of them; you might get a few more from Windows Update.

I would go to Dell's website and download your Ethernet (NIC) driver in case Windows doesn't install it. It's the most important driver as you need it to get on the net.

Of course, it wouldn't do any harm to download all possible drivers from Dell, but I wouldn't necessarily install them. See how Windows own drivers do for you.

After you install and get updated, inspect the functionality of your hardware and take a look in Device Manager. If anything is goofy at that time, then look around for other drivers.

My four year old tossed my Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop across the room today, and since then, it isn't booting.

It reaches Vista's loading screen, where you see the moving bar and "© Microsoft Corporation," but it doesn't go past that point. Initially, I heard a clicking sound.

I tried booting it in Safe Mode, but the same thing happened. I also tried booting it from the Vista DVD, but got the same problem.

I took the hard drive out and looked at it, and couldn't see any visual damage.

I ran the Windows Diagnostics tool, and got the following error code:

Error code 0142

Error code 2000-0142

Hard drive 1 - self test unsuccessful status 79

I've seen reports of people having similar problems that were fixed by a replacement hard drive, but I'm wondering if I can get the data off of this one first. Is it worth trying to find an external USB drive enclosure, or is the drive too damaged?

And how can I get my laptop running again? It's not under warranty anymore.

Thanks for any help!

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1525 Won't Boot

I would buy an external wd passport harddrive.
Take the hard drive out of your laptop...2 screws on botom of the unit.
set it down and take a picture to remember the orientation of the black plastic pull cover.
Take the wd external will slide out..its a little tricky the first time.
now switch the covers between the 2 hard drives and put the usb adapter on the old hard drive and slide evevything back in the case about 90 percent of the way.
push the hdd into the sure to put the pull handle back on.
Use you windows dvd and put on windows
then the drivers from the drivers and utilities disk

now plug in your old had via the usb port and see if you can read the files...alot of times you can recover many of the files

Note..when booting the vista dvd
hit power start tapping f12 light and fast
then select the dvd rom from the list to boot from

When I turn on my laptop I choose the option "Start Windows Normally" from the screen that appears. Once I choose that option my laptop begins to boot up, then it goes to a blue screen with some white words for a second or two, then to a pure black screen with no light being emitted for about ten seconds, after that it turns of and restarts. This happens whenever I turn my laptop on.
I've had it for about three years.

My Dell Inspiron 1525 with Windows Vista Home Premium stopped working today and I have many important files on it (I don't have a backup of them). When I try to turn it on, it appears to be working, but the screen goes blank after a few seconds (the light still stays on). (The BSoD showed up the first few times that I tried, but it doesn't anymore). I cannot boot into safe mode (F8 does not work) and I cannot boot from CDs, DVDs or USBs anymore. I have also tried running the BIOS test, which said that the test of Hard Drive 1 had failed and displayed the Error codes "0142" and "2000-01422 and Status: 79. Since it is a laptop, I do not want to take the hard disk out, but I don't want to have to pay to have the data recovered either.Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.George.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1525 cannot boot

Given that it will not boot from CD etc taking out the hard drive would be my preferred option if there is data you want; anything else will risk further deteriorating what is on the disk.

hi everyone... my dell inspiron 1525 that's about two years old, and has had to operate (most of the time, continuously...) under terrible conditions - smothered ventilation and, oven-hot, is now beeping...

...this summer it seemed the battery went (it would not work unless it was plugged in at all times), and then the fan started running nearly constantly and it would be so hot that it would burn my fingers and often shut off (i've got a cooling fan now, but i don't think it's helping, probably too little, too late), and of late i notice that it is sometimes making a soft click-pause-click sound with occasional louder clicks (the sound of a latch being opened/closed) ...although, now i recall that it may have made that sound once in a while, even when it was new, but maybe i never realized that it could have been doing that because it was critically hot and the hard drive was being damaged...
and now finally it has started making an occasional, small but high pitched, single beep that sounds like it's coming from the hard drive. is this a warning alarm that the hard drive is about to die very soon?

i hated having to run my 'baby' under these conditions and know i'm probably fortunate that it has served me for this long

Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 which has gone haywire. I was using it a few days ago when it just shut down for no reason. Upon booting it went to a black screen with a white blinking cursor.

I have tried to boot it into safe mode = not working at all.
I have tried to use recovery console = not working at all.

The only F-keys working are F2 and F12. Neither of which are helping in repairing my laptop.

I tried and tried again to reboot but nothing. I then left it overnight thinking it might have booted by the time I got back to it, but nothing.

Using my daughters laptop I downloaded Hirens boot cd, had a look through that and run an antispyware app. Rebooted and still nothing. Tried to boot from hard drive, black screen. I don't know what else I could use from the disc which might help.

A friend had a copy of spotmau bootable cd. I tried that and running the emergency kit section and then windows recovery I went through each option one by one. However it failed on the registry recovery.

I could have used the registry recovery but I have no idea where the registry file would be, so I left it at that.

There's also an option to recover from an image file. But I can't get it even though there is a Dell backup image on there.

I have the Dell recovery console built in but it ain't happening because I can't access it, it's just this black screen.

Can anyone help in getting me up and running again?

Answer:Formating my Dell Inspiron 1525(Need Help)

What's the 7-character service tag number on the sticker of that Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop?

If you've done a hard drive format and clean reinstall of Windows Vista, it needs to be upgraded to SP1 and then to SP2 before you download and install all the post-SP2 updates.

You've obviously done something wrong because it's impossible for the hard drive to fill up from just doing what you say you've done.

I had to replace my ac adapter and in the process of taking my laptop apart I managed to break a cable ribbon retaining clip. It's a square shape with only three sides. One side is open. It held the ribbon cable to my multi-media bar (controlling my volume, mute, stop, play, pause, etc.). Does anybody know where I can find these tiny, obscure parts? I tried Dell and got nowhere.

Answer:Part for Dell Inspiron 1525

I doubt you will find the clip itself for sale but you might find a broken motherboard that has the same type on Ebay.

The clip pushes down on the ribbon to ensure good contact in the socket. If you still have the parts of the broken clip you may be able to glue them together or fit the largest piece and put tape over it to keep it in place.

I suggest starting all troubleshooting with the following diagnostic tests. They'll save you a lot of time and heartache if there is a hardware failure, and you'll have the disks on hand in case you need them in the future:

H/W Diagnostics:
Please start by running these bootable hardware diagnostics:
Memory Diagnostics (read the details at the link)
HD Diagnostic (read the details at the link)

Also, once you get back into Windows, please run one of these free, independent online malware scans to ensure that your current protection hasn't been compromised: Free Online AntiMalware Scanners (read the details at the link)

You can run Dell diagnostics on the drive to rule out failure . . if it has failed, you will have to reinstall everything on the new drive.

If they were able to successfully extract the data, you may just need to run chkdsk on the drive to get it back

Hi KristineP42,
Welcome to Dell community,
I am sorry to hear that the system is not working to your satisfaction. In order to help you we need to find out what is it that is causing the system to behave this way, so to isolate this issue I need you to perform a few steps and observe couple of things.
Please run the tests on the system to launch the PSA+ Diagnostics, perform one of the following actions:
Hold down the <Fn> key while pressing the power button.
Turn on the system, press <F12> at the initial Dell? logo screen, and select Diagnostics from the boot menu.
Let me know if it returns any error code.
Also, you can take the system in the BIOS by pressing the f2 key at startup and observe the system there and check if it stays there without restarting.
Let me know your findings. Glad to be of assistance.

My daughter's laptop has stopped booting into Winodws Vista SP1 32 bit. It gets past the Dell BIOS screen and starts trying to load Windows, but sticks at the small rippling bar at the bottom of the splash screen, just before the Windows logo appears. This rippling bar just goes on and on.
I've tried starting it in Safe mode, but the scrolling list of drivers gets as far as Windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys then stops.
I've tried Last Known Good Configuration - nothing happens.
I've restarted the computer with the Dell operating system disk in the optical drive, in order to run a repair. But the computer won't boot from the drive - it just goes to the startup options menu again.
The Dell BIOS screen has no indication of what key to press, in order to get into the BIOS and change the boot order to the optical drive. I've tried every key I can think of - F8, F10, F11, Esc... and so on. Nothing will persuade the computer to get me into the BIOS.

Hi all,

My Dell Inspiron 1525 has had some problems for awhile and just recently it was doing a lot better. But the other day, I ran a virus scan with McAfee and it found a trojan called NTOSKRNL-HOOK and so it scanned it and removed it. But it said it kept coming back. Anyways I turned off m computer to deal with it later and now it won't turn on. It gets to the Dell logo screen and loads the little white bar and then the screen goes black and it does it again and again until finally I just end up turning it off manually. Because it doesn't get past that page, I can't even boot it in safe mode or anything and all I can do is use the F2 and F12 to use diagnostics and such. If someone could recommend something, I would really appreciate it since I haven't had it more than a year or so (warranty is up). Thanks!

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1525 screen goes black

First off, with any problem of this nature always try to either contact the manufacturer or post in their forums. They are usually very helpful & knowledgeable at the Dell forums. click here for the Laptop forum, click on the 'Sign in' link there (near the top on a grey background) to access the 'Create Account' page in order to join & begin posting. All the best with it. G

I have this notebook and after three years of usage it became so slow, it would take 30 min to start.

Last week I formatted its hard drive and reinstalled Windows Vista.

As soon as I went on the Internet my computer crashed again.
Another complete reinstall and another crash after I tried to access the web. This time the crash happened while I was attempting to install Avira !

Thinking I may have a hardware problem, I did a third complete reinstall and started to use the computer off line. It works perfectly! No crashes in a whole week.

My question is, what is the antivirus software I need and how can I install it off line.

As a second question, I noticed that a group of drivers is missing under "Other device". The group includes 3 drivers. There is no way for me to figure out which this "other device" is so that I can download the drivers for it. I know I installed all recommended drivers from my resource CD.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525. Yes, I know it is a very old model but it has served me just fine over the last few years until very recently when some of the keys are failing. There was a loud, almost constant buzzing sound in my laptop every time I worked on it so I took it to the repair shop where the engineer told me it is a problem with the fan. So he removed the keyboard to open and check the make of the fan and said a replacement fan will need to be ordered. While I am waiting for that to be done, he put the keyboard back in its place but some keys on it are not working. I came across the following posted here more than 3 years ago by the user HYLBJTO. I am reproducing it below because the problem I am facing with the keyboard is exactly the same as described by this user and the suggestion given to him by someone to fix the problem did not work from what I understand.

"I was reading an expired thread about issues with certain keys not working on a Dell Inspiron 1525. I have experienced what seems like the same problem: Certain keys do not work - but not the same ones as those in the older thread (w,d,etc for me)... here's the strange part: If I do not screw down the keyboard and hold it up slightly, the problem disappears. I thought it might have something to do with pressure on the keyboard, but I could not duplicate the problem by applying pressure to the back of the keyboard. However, if it is screwed down tight to the plate it sits on, those same keys do n... Read more

I bought my Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop three or four years ago. I have had multiple issues with it from the beginning. Over the last several months I have devoured the internet in search of help fixing it, with no luck. My warranty on it has expired so there is no tech support through Dell without charge. I have not taken it into a repair shop, because I'm trying not to spend anymore money on it than I already have on the past issues. I did buy my laptop refurbished.. not sure that has anything to do with it?
When starting my laptop it directly goes to a screen that tells me to choose "Launch Startup Repair (recommended)" or "Start Windows Normally". No matter which I choose it goes to a page that says Microsoft Corporation at the bottom and has a loading bar type thing. After a couple minutes of sitting on that screen it goes to a blueish/blackish, lit up, blank screeen. No mouse or anything. It wont do anything else but THAT.

Any suggestions or ideas on what could be wrong or what I need to do to fix my laptop would be great! I spent a great deal of money on my computer and all its been is one problem after another! Extremely frustrated!

Please Help!

Answer:Start up issue on Dell Inspiron 1525

Refurbished doesn't necesarily = bad computer. Problems can occur with new one also. Try continually tapping F8 after loading bar disappears and choose: Last Known Good Configuration (Advanced)

Hey, computer geeks -

Someone...PLEASE help me.

Last week, I foolishly welcomed a malicious virus onto my computer. Not even Avast detected it. To make a long story short, I backed up and reinstalled Vista. Everything seems to working fine with the clean installation...except for two things that are about to make me commit homocide.

1) My cursor is jumping around the screen when I type like a crazy mofo. Never did this prior to the clean installation. How do I get this to stop?! I can't even type a basic email without having to reposition the cursor a couple of times.

2) I have Open Office installed on my computer. When I first start up my computer, I can open my various documents and spreadsheets just fine. But after my computer has been on for awhile, I then WON'T be able to open them. So the program is not launching properly. I have to restart the whole computer to be able to open the documents again. I even tried uninstalling Open Office and reinstalling it, but it doesn't seem to have helped. Again, this problem didn't start occuring until after the clean install of Vista.

Please, geeks, I know someone out there must be able to help me. I mean, you don't get paid, you sit in front of a screen all day, you're socially, a sensation. Thanks so much in advance.

I have a 2 year old Dell Inspiron 1525 with Windows Vista that has never had any problems. However, today, unexpectedly, my computer froze and as I tried to restart it, it said there were no bootable devices. After running some diagnostics, it said the hard drive could not be detected.
The error is 0141. Message Error Code: 2000-0141. No drive detected.

I have absolutely no idea what to do. My warranty expired last year and I could really use some help!

HI. Im looking to get a laptop and have decided to get either a Dell inspiron or Vostro (in small business section of site.) Basically I've run into this snag:

Do I get the inspiron with integrated graphics (intel X3100), or the vostro with nvidia 8400M 256mb.

At first it seems like an obvious choice to take the nvidia, but reading through some stuff im now not sure how much of an advantage it would be. I can get fairly similar spec for everything else on each, although if i get vostro i can get 3Gb ram same price. Here are the main specs, both laptops at roughly the same price

Inspiron: £449

Core 2 duo T5550 1.83GHz processor (667MHz bus, 2MB cache)
2Gb DDR2 ram
250 Gb Hard drive
15.4" widescreen with true life and integrated webcam
Intergrated graphics (X3100 i think)

Vostro: £469

Core 2 duo T5670 1.8GHz processor (800MHz bus, 2MB cache)
3Gb DDR2 ram
250 Gb Hard drive
15.4" widescreen
256 Mb Nvidia 8400M GS (64 bit) graphics

So Basically, vostro has superior graphics (i think??), and for only £20 more I can get an extra 1Gb ram, at expense of webcam and truelife.

What do you think?

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1525 or Vostro 1510?

I would go for the vostro

One of my friends' laptop is being a bit temperamental. It's a relatively new Dell Inspiron 1525 with Windows Vista Home Premium (32bit) SP1 installed. Anyways, the computer turns on normally but when the OS goes to load it gets stuck at a black screen with just the mouse cursor moving around. Safe Mode doesn't work and the same thing happens if I select "Last Good Config that Worked." I've seen this problem before with updates, but my friend said it was working fine and he didn't install anything.

I popped in the Dell OS disk so I could try a repair/recovery but that was unsuccessful as well. The setup program didn't detect any problems with the OS and there were no restore points to revert back to. I have no idea what the computer is doing when it sits on the black screen. There is a little bit of HDD activity here and there but I think that's the normal behavior. Any ideas? I'm sort of at a loss here...

Thanks in advance for any help!

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1525 not booting (Vista)

If I get a Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 OEM disk can I perform a repair install without being able to boot the OS normally? I can't do anything with this computer at the moment--it just sits and does nothing. I slaved the HDD to another system and was able to read and write normally, so it's definitely a problem with Vista. Problem is I have no idea what is causing the computer to hang so I can't pull any errors and startup repair says there's no problems.

I have seen many different threads about this same issue, but have not seen anything that has worked for me. I have a Dell inspiron 1525 and recently upgraded to windows 7. Since then all is good except for the fact that the internal microphone doesn't work at all. I have tried to install the sigmatel driver, but it says it doesn't support my operating system, even when I try and install it with compatibility mode. I would love any help on the subject as I am getting very frustrated with it. Thanks.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1525 internal microphone

Without the Sigmatel driver you are having to use the native Windows HD audio driver which is a basic generic  that does not support all functions of the audio hardware. As you said the normal solution is to install the Sigmatel Vista audio driver R218148 in Vista compatibility mode. To do that you would download the Vista driver package and unzip it  but cancel the installation process. Go to its folder at c:\Dell\Drivers\R218148. Find the setup.exe file and right click on it. Select the Properties. Find the compatibility tab and select Vista.

If that is what you did and got the error message I suspect it is because it is a 32 bit driver and your version of 7 is 64 bit. There is another driver you can try. When Sigmatel went out of business it was absorbed by IDT and the early IDT drivers seem to be based on the Sigmatel ones. The IDT R226903 audio driver for 7 reportedly works on the 1525 so it is worth a try. You might be able to install it directly, but the instructions I was given were as follows:
With the Windows native driver installed, download and unzip the IDT but cancel the installation. Go into Device Manager to the audio controller (under "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers"). Right click on it and chose to update the driver. Choose to manually find the driver and don't let Windows look for it. Browse to c:\Dell\drivers\R226903 then click "Next". When you restart the laptop Windows will detect your audio hardware and install... Read more

When i turn the laptop on at first it seems normal and it says i have an internet connection, but when i try to go on the internet it just puts up a blank white screen. It then tries to load a webpage and either freezes completely and the whole screen goes black or times out after about 10 minutes and says:

"The instruction at 0x73F9D86A referenced memory at 0x73F9D86A. The required data was not placed into memory because of an I/O error status of 0xc0000185. Click OK to terminate the program"

then another error message pops up saying:

''Unspecified error occurred in AVG."

and if i try to use alt ctrl delete when the internet is all frozen the screen goes all black except for the pointer. then it comes up with an error message saying:

"Failure to display security and shut down options
The logon process was unable to display security options when CTRL+ALT+DELETE was pressed. If the operating system does not respond, press ESC or restart the computer by using the power switch."

Answer:Dell inspiron 1525 wont go onto internet

What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, Mcafee , AVG etc

if that does not work
can you restore to a date it was working

Just bought my son a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop. Whenever He tries to play Videos on Youtube or Googlevideo the video stutters badly. If he pauses it and allows it to download fully it plays fine. He's running Vista Home Premium with 2 Gb Ram.Intel® Core? 2 Duo Processor T5800 2.0 GHz.Integrated Intel® Graphic Media Accelerator X3100.Someone told me that you can increase the amount of RAM that the Video card uses but I'm not sure how to do this or even if this would help...any suggestions.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1525 Video Problem

Couple of things to try before you start messing with the video card:Do the videos stutter at whatever time of day your son tries to play them? At 'busy' times on the internet, they're more likely to stutter.Have you got the most recent version of Flash? If not, go to the Adobe site and uninstall the current version with their removal tool and then download/install the latest version

Alright, so ...

I use a Logitech Quickcam for internet video-calls and the like... The problem is that when I talk, my computer automatically drops its volume while its receiving my voice/any noise, and then automatically restores it to a normal level when I stop talking/things get quiet.

I uninstalled Dell Quickset which I thought was the problem, but it still does it, just now without the Quickset window opening up all the time. Dunno if its with the webcam, the laptop, or the tango between the two...

Here's a Hijackthis log to kick things off. I have a feeling it may be Dell bloatware, but I'm not positive.

* I tried to find a driver after going to Devices & Printers>Properties>Troubleshoot
* Did this after trying to print some BSOD material and noticed printer did not work
*Printer had worked fine until today (networked HPPhotosmart D7460)
* The one strange thing I have noticed since putting Win 7 on the laptop that had not happened prior was that randomly, throughout the day, the system will, for a split second, minimize whatever you are working in and go to the home screen, then a few seconds lator go back to what you were working on. Answer:BSOD upon waking up Dell Inspiron 1525

I see your BSODs started about 5 days after you installed Windows 7, which makes me almost suspect a firmware issue. Try installing this BIOS update: Drivers and Downloads | Dell [United States]

It's not too much newer than your current version, but it's worth a shot for sure. If that doesn't work, post back here and we'll start on some hardware diagnostics.

I have subjected my Dell Inspiron 1525 to very heavy use over the last few years. I have done extremely little in the way of hardware upkeep and ugrades, but I upgraded to Windows 7 in February of 2010 and have had Office 2007 on it for as long as I've had it. The computer uses a Pentium Dual Core Processor and has a 250 gb HDD and 2 gb of RAM.
Unfortunately, the computer has been experiencing issues for the last few weeks, and for the last three days, I have been completely unable to get the thing to boot in any way shape or form. I have all my important files backed up to flash drives or in the cloud, so replacing the HDD is honestly not out of the question.
I press the power button and it just spins and spins for hours, to nothing. Finally, it will ask if I want to boot into recovery mode and normal mode. Ive tried both no less than seven times, with nothing at all.
If it is a hardware issue (as I suspect it is), then i would rather not spend more than $150 on repairs because for $250 I could just get a used PC on eBay. Thanks!

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1525 will not boot to Windows 7

You could try to boot off a linux live cd to see if it is the hardware (other than your Hard Drive) and if it boots ok try putting a new hard drive in.
That's what I would start off with.

How much RAM? The base model shipped with 512MB but it's upgradable to 4GB. If you have less than 2GB, that would be a bottleneck.

Answer:Dell inspiron 1525 screen not working HELP!!

Tony, so the problem is your laptop is turned on, but the laptop screen isn't displaying an image?

Disconnect the HDMI cable, first. Look across your top row of keys on the keyboard. Tap the key with an icon on it that looks like a computer screen, then wait a second and see if your screen lights up It may be the F8 key, not sure. On some models you have to hold down the Fn key while you tap the F8 key. That toggles your LCD screen on and off.
