computer invisible/unreachable after certain amount of packets

Question: computer invisible/unreachable after certain amount of packets

Hello to all, I have a strange situation that i couldn't find in the other topics. Sorry if i missed it out somewhere. We are in an office having 15 computers connected through a Linksys WRT54G/GS/GL. We have one computer which is the storage for all our work files. All the internal ip's are taken through DHCP. The router have a static IP and all the internet goes through it. Everything works really fine until a certain moment when some of the computers (not the storage one) is unable to connect to the storage computer. I noticed that this happens when a lot of packets has been sent/received on the storage pc. When repairing the network connection problem still exists. When disable->enable the connection the packets are back to 0 and then everything works fine again. Is the problem in the storage computer or in the router? The storage computer is a windows XP, SP3, P4 3GHZ, 1GB Ram . Does anyone know of a patch or something to fix this issue? Thanks in advance.

Preferred Solution: computer invisible/unreachable after certain amount of packets

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: computer invisible/unreachable after certain amount of packets

It's not the router, it has no effect on internal LAN traffic. That sounds like something with your "storage computer". I have no idea what is going on there, but I'd be looking at applications running at startup first.

What kind of numbers for packet counts are you seeing when the problem occurs?

Ever since I updated Windows with the Windows Defender -kb915597 (Definition 1.145.1035.0) update, I have had significant packet loss and can hardly connect to anything on the internet. Sites either take forever to load OR they don't load at all. I did malware scans and virus scans they came up clean.I have checked my connection in my laptop (which I am making this post on because it was impossible on my desktop) and it connect just find and the speed test come out correct. I even called my internet provider and they sent out a tech who said the connection was find as well after various tests. I'm at a loss at what I should do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Losing an alarming amount of packets after Windows Update

I would suggest you to uninstall it.This is a faulty update that is known to cause network issues. If you have an updated antivirus you dont need defender and better disable it.

As the title says, its quite self explanatory- i can connect to the internet fine - all the settings have been untouched. The status is connected and there isnt anyapparent hardware failure (according to windows). Its just, packets are being sent - but they are not being received. Ive reset my routerseveral times, restarted several times and i can only think of a reformat in case of an OS issue. I would like to leave this as a last resort however. I have suspicions that it may be a hardware problem. This is due to the fact thqt the previous day, before i shut down my computer, lag caused a violent interaction with my foot. it wasnt superman force or anything, just more than a tap so i highlydoubt that was the problem.

Thanks in advance,

I'm in need of a second tech opinion here.

A family member gave me a HP Pavilion a1000 desktop PC with an AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3800+ to mess around with and make into an auxiliary machine to have laying around.

Without getting into more technical details than necessary the machine came with
1Gb of PC3300 RAM (it's correct factory default for the processor installed) I just happen to have
4Gb of PC2700 RAM laying around and I tested the machine and it appears to work just fine with the slower RAM.

The Question Is...

Would you rather have 1Gb of
PC3300 RAM or
4Gb of PC2700 RAM installed on a machine?
Am I a fool to go with the slower speed RAM?  Why?

The system seems much faster with the larger amount of slower memory (?)  How much really is the difference in the RAM speed jump between PC3300 and PC2700 RAM?   Would it be a significantly crippling
difference or not so much?

Further, I tried adding the 2 1Gb PC2700 memory to the 2 512Mb PC3300 memory and the system reports it all
is running as PC2700 (I was hoping that the speed could be split between banks but I guess not - yea, I already knew that) So I just added the 1Gb PC2700 memory to all four banks and I'm calling it a night. Am I sadly mistaken in some respect to prefer the
4Gb slower RAM here?
If it matters then I'm using the machine with Windows XP Media Center Edition SP3 installed though I do intend upon giving Windows 10 a try with this machine

I know this is the opposite of a common problem that people post left and right about on this forum, but my network won't send even one packet. Answer:0 packets sent: Receiving packets just peachy, but not sending any (!)

Hi kjseara, the IP address your getting (169.254.x.x) suggests you are unable to connect to your router, you said you had windows firewall running; do you have any antivirus running? If so, try disabling them and then try and connect again. If the problem still persists try disabling your windows firewall and see if you can connect then.

At random times, my internet will "drop" connection and will not download any packets, but I am still able to send packets. My Local Area Connection icon continues to say I am connected, my modem is fully functional, and my cables are good. I can get my internet back up and running for 10 minutes or so by disable and re-enabling my Network Connection. If I simply try the "repair", it gives me an error at the "Refreshing IP" step.

I have done a full system scan for viruses and I am clean. My drivers are fully updated, I have disabled my firewalls, and still no help. During the times when it is down, I can successfully ping my modem through CMD, but I get the time-out error if I ping a site, my default gateway, the DHCP Server, or the DMS Servers.

I have made no changes to any major settings on my computer, nor has there been any recent additions/removals of any software.

Does anyone know what is causing this or how I can fix it?

Two years ago, I bought a computer. The computer has an Intel motherboard. That time, Intel website claimed that the maximum amount of RAM is 4gb, and so did the seller. Now, Intel changed the motherboard specifications by reducing the amount of maximum RAM to be 2gb. Thesedays, although Intel reduced the maximum RAM in specifications to 2gb, I'm thinking of increasing the amount of RAM to 4gb, so would there be risks over my computer because of doing that? If so, what are they?
Thanks previously.

Answer:Increasing the amount of RAM over the newly-announced maximum amount?

Hi, I have a curious security question...
Let's say there is a person on a shared home network, and is connected to that network via LAN, but This person does not have administrative rights over the router/ISP connection.

If that person wanted to keep their Internet activity super protected, so not even the ISP would be able to get information from the packets they send/receive from their computer, would it be possible for them to achieve this?
If so, would they use either some type of physical layer of protection between them and the router? or through software on their pc?

I know it sounds sus, but everyone has a right to privacy, so I'm not asking any questions about why they want to be this strict with their privacy.

Answer:Possible to encrypt packets sent from one computer through LAN?

An HTTPS connection between a computer's web browser and some server on the Internet would provide Transport Layer encryption of the packets. Anyone sniffing packets anywhere in the data path would only be able to determine the source and destination IP addresses of each packet but not the actual content.

If the person using the computer wished to hide the IP address of the server they were connecting to, they could establish an HTTPS connection to a suitable proxy server which would then, in turn, connect to the target server.

I have the Zonealarm free firewall and it keeps blocking packets sent from my computer to another people's computers through their port 139. It's happening in exact intervals 13 minutes. Should I be concerned?

Answer:Computer keep sending out packets

Whose computers are you referring to? Computers on your own network? Computers on the internet? Do you have file sharing enable? That is what port 139 is normally used for.

If you believe you are having malware problems, please follow the instructions in the READ & RUN ME FIRST link given futher down and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.
TDSSserv Non-Plug & Play Driver Disable

If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.

After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
Helpful Notes:

If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:

I m using Windows XP SP2 and have a LAN connection
... of late i have noticed that the number of packets sent in the Activity frame of the
"LAN Connection Status " window is more than the number of packets received .
I have fully scanned my PC with ZoneAlarm antivirus / antispyware and HijackThis and no problem was detected.
I also checked the running process through Task Manager and found only Microsoft services and other system related services (ZoneAlarm scanning process, Disk keeper service, .. etc) are running.
I also updated the NIC driver but it doesn,t solve the problem. My NIC is Realtek RTL8139.

Help Please.
Thank You.

Answer:sent packets hugely more than packets received.

If you check the status and note the number of packets send/received, then do it again after exactly one minute, what is the number of sent packets over the minute? What is the number of received packets?

Have you tried booting in Safe Mode with Networking and checking if this is still happening?

Alright, so we have about six computers on average all on at the same time, working just fine, last night one of the laptops just, stopped working, saying there is no internet access, With every attempt it doesn't send any information. When I disconnect it from the wireless, then reconnect it, it immediately receives packets but won't send any.

Again, all of the other computers are fine, connect just fine, it's just the one computer that is acting up, I've done everything I know personally to do fix it. Help? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Computer not sending packets, but will receive them..

receives packets but won't send any.Click to expand...

Maybe a corrupted or misconfigured firewall could cause that (but sending a few and receiving none is the usual symptom).

Maybe an incorrect or corrupted wireless driver could cause that.

But it mostly sounds to me like a defective adapter.

If there are the same results with ethernet that would point to a firewall.

(this might be the wrong forum for this, if so I apologize)

Recently my computer started running much more slowly than it used to. I havent manually installed anything, and no settings were changed. It began when one day I lost my wireless network connection, and when I brought it back up, there was this new slowness.

Now, I ran Microsoft AntiSpyware, and it came up negative, and I ran AVG, and that came up negative as well... And that is the limit of my skill with these kinds of issues. I looked at my connection, and my packets "seemed" odd to me. Complete shot in the dark, but could that have anything to do with it???

My sent/received ratio is close to 3:1 which seems odd to me (Even when I am not running any visible programs manually). Why would I be sending more than receving?

This led me to suspect something was wrong... An infection, hijack, or some other internet based intruder... I dont know, help please!!!
(I am on a DSL connection, wirelessly networked to another computer two levels up, which has experienced identical slowness.)

Thanks for any info or assistance, and again I apologize if this is in the wrong place, or a silly problem .

Okay, so i've been having some really weird networking problems at home. I have a Dlink DIR-655 router (latest firm) with a Motorola SB5100 modem for my 20mb/2mb RCN Internet connection in Chicago.

Currently I'm running two clients of Vista Ultimate x64, with a few wireless clients. Every once in awhile the Internet connection will drop (maybe every couple of days or so) I go ahead and power cycle my network devices and reboot and it almost always works again.

When the connection does cut out, it's intermittent, my messenger clients get randomly disconnected for a few minutes, then it'll completely go out. The router is brand new and I have replaced it with another new one and it's still having these weird problems.

Today, when it happened I looked at my network connection status and it displayed this:

35 billion packets sent in 5 minutes?? Now my computer seems like more of the culprit than my network hardware; any suggestions as to how to figure out what's causing this?

Thanks in advance.

I use a router in my house that goes around to 4 computers and share the internet access. (I have the router connected to the modem)

Yesterday, one of the computers' internet stopped working.
I renewed the IP, tried re-plugging the cable, but those didn't fix it.

I plugged that computer's cable into another computer and it connected to the internet... so I'm guessing that it's the computer's problem.

The computer recognizes the cable when I unplug/plug it in. It says that LAN network is connected. But on the status screen it says that I'm not receiving packets. (something like 724 sent, 0 received)

Does anybody know what's causing this problem?

(Sorry if I don't know the technical terms.. I'm not very good at using technology.)

Answer:Computer not receiving packets from router

In the Network connections, are the TCP/IP properties set to "Obtain an IP address automatically"?
What make/model of router do you have?
What IP do you get, when in a Command-box you type: ipconfig /all

I haven't been able to find any information concerning this and I was hoping someone could help me. I've found posts and information on problems with not receiving packets but not with not sending packets. I'm connecting through a RCA broadband modem with Roadrunner cable service and a 3COM Etherlink NIC. When I start my computer, it never sends packets. I have to pull out the ethernet cable and replug it to reconnect. After a few tries, it'll connect. Occasionally my computer stops sending packets and I disconnect and I'll have to reconnect by unplugging and replugging the cable. What's the problem?

Answer:Computer receiving packets but not sending

that happened to me twice. my solution has always been to turn off both the modem and my router by disconnecting the power cable and then unpluging all connections. then i turn on my modem....after that is on and has a connection.........start the router....then finally restart of pc and plugging in the ethernet cable into the computer.

or just basically restarting everything

The computer ( Dell using Windows XP ), is connected to the internet, but the web pages and games that require the internet (World of Warcraft) can not connect. The connection says its sending "packets" but not receiving as much as it should to actually go anywhere on the net and to connect to the game. It was working just fine 2 days ago. What happened?Edit: Moved topic from XP to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

Answer:Computer is connected but not receiving packets?

First, a few questions to help narrow down the problem...

Is the computer connected to the Internet directly, or is it connected to a router?
Is the computer connected via a wired or wireless connection?
Are you able to ping any web servers, such as
What firewall or other anti-malware software do you have installed on the computer?

Hello all,

As of just a few days ago, my wireless connection is constantly sending and receiving packets whether I am surfing the web or not. I cannot pinpoint what is sending information. As this has never happened in the several years I've owned this PC and had this configuration, I'm a bit worried.

Also, my performance has recently taken a sizeable hit - both online and off. I've run various virus scans and AdAware, but fear as though I'm missing something. I've attached the required logs - please help if you can!

I use Google Chrome but recently the wave in my volume control keeps on automatically going to the lowest bar and I would lose all audio until I move the volume bar for Wave back up. Now I even lose audio even with the volume bar for Wave near the top and when I toggle the bar a bit, my sound comes back. I also get mysterious voice ads that I don't see a window for so I can't close it. I'm also getting IE pop ups even though I am using Google Chrome. Finally, when I look at my task manager, I see a lot of iexplore.exe processes by SYSTEM and I am logged in as Administrator. I've ran system restore to a date before this all happens but it didn't seem to work. I currently have Symantec antivirus. I've followed the forum's window XP cleaning procedure but the problems are still there. These are my logs. Please please help!!!

Answer:Invisible IE, invisible voice ads, wave audio control automatically resets to low

Hi and Welcome,

Please do the following:

Please download DDS from either of these links

and save it to your desktop.

Disable any script blocking protection
Double click dds.pif to run the tool.
When done, two DDS.txt's will open.
Save both reports to your desktop.
Please include the contents of the following in your next reply:

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop. It will be a randomly named executable.

Double click the exe file.
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan.

Click the image to enlarge it

In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Ensure the following are unchecked
Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
Show All (don't miss this one)

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.

Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in reply.

Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries [/QUOTE]

Hi! I use Firefox for everything but one thing I need IE for work. All of a sudden started getting these IE pop ups when I had IE closed all of the time, I get "You have won an Ipod, WalMart card, etc." voice ads with no window at all, I also get an IE that shows up if I do Alt+tab but doesn't show if I try to bring it up. I have XP Professional Service Pack 3. I have done Spybot, Housecall, Panda, I don't even know, I have done so many antivirus/scan/spyware things over the last four days and nothing is doing it. I think I am wasting my time and am bowing to you all, begging for help.

BTW I don't NORMALLY run w/o anything, I normally have AVG but yesterday I uninstalled it to run Kaspersky because it (AVG) was giving me trouble and now it will not completely uninstall to allow me to run Kaspersky. I am on my way to making a mess and stopped to beg for help before I kill the machine.

Edited to add - I also HAD the Antivirus 2009 but managed to get rid of that, or at least most outward appearances of it. I am left with these lingering pop up things though. I think I picked it all up in a spam email that looked very real from my brother-in-law.

EDITED -I have run a couple of more things - Ad-Aware, Stinger, Housecall, so this is an updated HJT log

how can i tell the maxmium amount of RAM my computer can handle?

Here's what belarc reports for RAM:

112 Megabytes Installed Memory

Slot 'A0' has 128 MB
Slot 'A1' is Empty
Slot 'A2' is Empty
Slot 'A3' is Empty

Answer:How can i tell maxium amount of RAM a computer can handle?

Yeah mm'K, Belarc probably reports 112 only because your video memory might be shared or soemthing. Anyways check your motherboard pecs. The books dude. It all depends on your motherboard. Look in your motherboards manual, it answers that very question your asking.

Ive been finding my computer has been using alot of my ram (around 3.5gb - 4 gb) when there is very little running. nothing at all making up to 4gb.

As you can see there is alot of Ram being used for the amount of processes and programs running. I have done a malware scan with kaspersky, Malwarbytes and with spyhunter. All of which cleaned my system. I am now wondering what else it could be?
I was thinking it could be a memory leak but i dont know where from.

If anyone has any ideas at all please do tell.

My computer has 2gb's of ram installed and my BIOS recognizes that I do as claimed and so does my System Information but right clicking on "My Computer" and Properties displays 256mb. Any one know a solution or what the problem is or if it will in fact affect my performance? I just formated to XP Pro from Media Center Edition which came with my laptop and had to change a BIOS setting for "enable native SATA support" for it to recognize my HD in order to format with XP Pro CD.

Answer:Wrong Ram Amount via Computer Properties

Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and under the Performance tab, see what it lists under Commit Charge (K)>Limit.

You can also check in Start>Help and Support>Whats new in Windows XP>Tools (bottom left)>My Computer Information. (General Information)

Another way is Start>Run>type: msinfo32 and Enter.

Se what it losts their as the total amount of RAM picked up.

apears like 1 of your dimms isnt working. looks like u may have to...

take all your ram out, boot the pc with just 1 stick of ram.. and do this over and over again in each dimm slot. if all the slots work... boot up with just 1 stick at a time, but try it with each of the 4 dimms. if thy all work... ask someone else lol

If I try to burn 12 half hour shows on the computer (THIS IS JUST AN EXAMPLE) which were downloaded online, they do not fit on the same type DVD-R. Why?? Am I missing something? I use Nero 8 Thanks Dennis

Hey there, new to this site.

I went to turn on my computer today and noticed something strange while the computer was still off. The CPU fan is receiving a small amount of juice just enough to power the LED's but not the fan. Also my PSU is making a clicking sound which I believe is the PSU's fan since it always did have some friction somewhere and the clicking sound "winds down" when I completely unplug the power supply. Listening to the clicking sound, the fan is obviously running slow. No other case fans or components seem to be receiving any power and this all happens when the computer is off. The computer still boots up and seems to run absolutely fine but I didn't keep it on to do any tests. Is something wrong with the power supply or something else? Thank you very much for your time.

Hullo, recently my laptop (Dell Inspiron 6400, running WinXP Media Edition)'s been failing; it freezes anywhere from ten seconds to five minutes after I log in. I'm unable to install an antivirus because the laptop freezes during installation. Safe Mode seems to be, well, safer, although even so it has frozen once.

I've done scans with ComboFix and MBAM; CF found a massive infestation in my pchealth and system32 folders but was able to restore everything. The system freezes just the same even after removing the threats.

I have no idea what's causing the freezing; it freezes anywhere from ten seconds to five minutes after I log in, and even freezes at login if I stay there too long.

The computer is completely frozen; Num Lock / Scroll Lock can't be activated/deactivated, the mouse doesn't move, etc. I can't even shut down without either pulling the plug out or holding onto the power button.

My HD is 91GB (Fujitsu MHV2100BH). There is 14.5GB free, although my F: partition has only 7% (or 4.5GB) free. I have 1GB of RAM installed. I have not had any problems with this laptop until recently. Or no, I have, but not relating to running out of system resources or anything related.

So my computer would turn on not that long ago for more than 30 seconds. The fan had a problem for the fan on the motherboard, so I bought a new one and replaced it. Now my computer turns on for about an hour and then turns off suddenly. The first time it happend I though it might have been bad contact and turned it on again, but the second time it only stayed on for about half of the time. I stopped trying after that for the day. I turned it on the day after and it stayed on for about an hour, hour and a halfish. I havn't turned it on since. The fan on the computer computer is working fine, but there is only one fan. It used to work fine like this with the just one fan before it broke, but now it isn't.  Is it overheating, do I need a new fan, or is it something else. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:My computer turns of suddenly after being on for certain amount of time.

its not a fan problem. it should be smps or mother board problem. first check your smps that it giving useful power to cpu. if it is ok, then please check your motherboard.

I have a Dell Dimension 3000 and Sprint DSL. I had trouble connecting to the internet and the Sprint tech fixed that but said that I probably have a virus because my computer is sending massive amounts of packets. When I click on the two little computer screens in the bottom right ccorner it shows that it has sent 3.7 million and received 5.2 million packets since yesterday(about 20 hours). I spoke to Dell support and they told me that it was not a problem. Can someone tell me if this is a problem?

PS. prior to this I had trouble with slow launching of programs and I reconfigured my computer back to day one. This took care of my "slow" problem.

Answer:My computer is constantly sending and receiving massive amounts of packets

Depends on what you were doing during the 20 hours. Are you sure you are counting packets or was it bytes? If you are worried about possible malware problems, you should run thru our full cleanup procedures as given below.

- Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus RemovalMake sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

- Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

Now reboot into normal mode.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem:

- Download HijackThis 1.99.1

- Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

- Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

- Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

- Run HijackThis and save your log file.

- Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

All of the sudden yesterday my computer just decided to start running very slowly. Nothing really changed with the exception of me installing the new Java update that my computer told me it needed. Now, at all times, all the items in my task manager use a huge amount of memory and I am completely unable to multitask. Right now, Firefox is using 180,000K of memory and this is the only website I have up, as well as the only program that I am running. Neither Firefox or IE ever used to use this much memory. I have included a screenshot of the task manager from when I first restarted my computer today. I have restarted, defragged, cleaned up the disk, everything. My specs are as follows:

Dell Laptop, Intel Celeron M Processor 1.40 Ghz, 504mb of RAM, 80gb hard drive (hard drive is brand new).

Even when Firefox or IE is the only thing running, some websites bog the entire computer down and it stalls for minutes without moving. Then, all of the sudden, it catches up with itself and does everything I tried to do while it was frozen. I know I don't have a lot of RAM and it isn't the newest and fastest system out there, but the sudden onset of this makes me think that my computer isn't just outdated, something changed in the system. Can anyone tell me what is going on here? How can I stop all these applications from using so much memory and be able to multitask and stream online media again?

Firstly I have a Toshiba personal computer (laptop) with Windows 7 Home Premium SP1. I had Norton Antivirus but that expired some six months ago and since then I've been using McAfee Internet Security. I regularly download things with Utorrent (which I've just uninstalled).

Around 3 months ago ads started popping up constantly in ANY browser I used - explorer, firefox and google chrome. I resorted to downloading ABP (Ad Block Pro) for Chrome and it consistently blocks a huge number of popups. Just last week though suddenly my computer slowed down to a near standstill (I thought it had completely frozen), which had never happened before. I had to hold down the power button to turn it off and each time I rebooted it , it would last anything between 2min -30min running normally before this happened again. When it "freezes" the processor still seems to flux every 3 seconds, and if I have the task manager open i can see that the processor percentage is on 0%, then every few seconds moves to 12% then immediately back to 0%, regardless of the applications I have open or the tasks it should be performing. Essentially the laptop in that state is incredibly slow and unusable. I don't know why this started happening or what exactly causes it to happen randomly, but I ran ccleaner, and then defraggler (the laptop didnt freeze during these processes. The problem persisted and I have since backed up personal ... Read more

Word 2003 is locking up my machine it's a almost brand new machine, but after a random amount of time, it just locks up. Only when using word, however. Problem is, I can't figure out why. I've uninstalled office and re-installed, removed zone-alarm, tried different documents, etc. Locks up - but it's inconsistent. Sometimes the freeze happens right away, sometimes after an hour.

Any ideas?

Question: Invisible Computer

I am running a small home network with the following computers:

My Desktop (Windows XP Pro SP3)
My Wife's Desktop (Windows XP Pro SP3)
My step-daughter's Desktop (Windows XP Pro SP2)
My Laptop (Windows XP Pro SP3)
My Wife's Laptop (Windows XP Pro SP2)

All the desktops and my laptop are hard-connected (Cat 5e cable). When she uses her laptop, she typically uses its wireless, but may use a cable if the wireless goes a little wonky.

Here's the issue: I can share folders both ways (Can see stuff from and can have my stuff seen from) my desktop with every other computer except my wife's desktop. Using her computer, I can type in a network path to get to any of my shared folders, but they won't show up in her "My Network Places" section. Interestingly, I cannot get to her computer's "Shared" folders through either my "My Network Places" interface or by typing in the //path/share address.

For example, she wants a copy of a picture I have on my computer. I cannot, though "My Network Places" or by typing in her computer name and shared path, put the picture on her computer. But I can put it in my D:\ drive (A shared path) and she can go into her explorer and type "\\"my PC Name"\D" and the shared folder will pop-up fine so she can take the pic.

What could be the issue? I've installed different LAN access cards and installed and reinstalled the home network on her machine several ti... Read more

A few days ago, I payed for 2 years license with Kaspersky Anti-Virus to remove some malware and adware off my computer after I ended up with a lot of stuff on my computer screwing up the entire system, including disabling Windows Defender. Now, all day yesterday, I had it scaning the entire computer, including my external HDD for anything that is harmful, and when it was completed, there was so much malware. I thought it was fixed. Now, today, I went to try and add an add-on to World of Warcraft, where it is located in my /Program Files (x86) folder, and the thing wouldn't copy. I was prompt with a message saying that I needed administation rights to place it. I went and tried that same thing, then got the same message. Thing is, I am the only user on my own computer, and I should have full administative rights. I restarted my computer, and tried the same thing, got the same message. When I looked though the entire folder of my x86 Program Files, I saw folders that looked like, product keys, but had nothing in it. The same thing within my Program Files, ProgramData and system 32 folders. I did another full scan with Kaspersky, and there was still malware on my computer. So I did the same process, removed them, restarted my computer and then did another scan, this time, kaspersky didn't pick up anything. When I loaded firefox to look through Google at these issues, all of a sudden, I got a message from Windows asking for rights to install something, I clicked no, an... Read more

Where can I look at to determine what are the processes that are currently running on my computer and the usage amount that its taking up? Need this to troubleshoot the slowness. (have already scan the computer and its free of virus and spyware). TIA.

Just recently I have began to notice that on start up my computer is using 3GB out of the available 8 without starting up any programs. The CPU usage is constantly fluctuating from 25% up to 100% and nothing on the performance monitor is out of the norm nor using too much memory. Any thoughts on what could be causing this and is there anything else I need to post here to give more information on the topic.

Hi there. My computer has been lagging very hard recently and checking the Task Manager I have noticed that I am using at a minimum roughly 3GB of memory and my CPU usage is fluctuating between 25% and 100%. Any thought about why this is happening? Not to mention that multiple games which I have installed that have been running perfectly fine for months prior are now failing to open. Thanks!

What happens if a computer becomes invisible at network?

Answer:invisible computer at network

I guess you can't see it.

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

What country are you located in.
Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
What is the expected Upstream/Downstream speed for your ISP Connection?
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).

This is the most weird, interesting and annoying problem that has been happening to my computer. I don't even know if this is considered a virus, trojan, worm, spyware,... I have no clue what to classify this problem but hopefully someone in this forum can help me.

I purchased my computer about 3-4 years ago. I'm currently a web developer and graphic designer so my computer is my career at the moment. I own a Dell Dimension 4400 with Windows XP Home Edition just in case you needed to know what type of computer I own and the OS that's running on it. I bought it with 20GBs in the hard drive. I figure that would be enough for my business. I bought all the programs that I needed and those programs took up collectively about 8GB of my hard drive space. As a few years pass I get the little alert pop telling me that I'm low in disk space. I look at the File space and I had under 200MBs left of hard drive space. This was a complete shock to me because all of the files for the websites that I built took up an average of 50 - 150MB. A lot of the print work took up way more and I also got into video editing and 3D modeling and animation which also took up some space so I just took it that all of my work files are taking up too much space. I bought an external drive and stored all of the files in my portfolio on this external hard drive but it seemed that all it free was about 6GB worth of space.

Now I'm storing everything on this external drive. I'm start... Read more

The laptop does not appear in "my network places" either on the desktop or laptop. Both can ping each other. From the laptop, I can share the desktop's printer, view files and tranfer files from laptop to desktop. I cannot move files from desktop to Laptop, or view. I have re-run the network wizard, have tried chagning the name of the laptop, and changed the name of the workgroup on both computers with no effect. what should I do next? Thanks, Robin

Hello.  Does anyone ever heard of this type of problem?  Everything graphics-wise was working fine until Dell took the laptop and serviced it.  When we got it back, noticed that couldn't see some graphics on some web pages--some critical graphics such as the "click to confirm" type of buttons when making a purchase, among others!  Warranty has expired and they will not correct the problem.  Being a novice, I am not sure if I will be able to supply all info needed to answer this question, but I've been told that it may have something to do with the video card.  I followed the instructions given here and found out the video card is a "Mobile Intel (R) 915GM/GMS, 910GML Express Chipset Family" (this was listed two times in the Display Adapters icon.  The computer is a Dell Inspiron 6000, Windows XP, Celeron processsor.  Thanks very much for any info you have to share!!Terry

I have no idea what my Dell is infected with. I have read some previous posts about similar problems with random ads playing in the background during computer usage. I tried a few of the removal techniques but none have worked for me.
I have a Dell Inspiron and I am running on Windows XP. Whenever I get on my computer and my volume is turned on I hear random commercials and advertisments playing in the background. I cannot see any other windows open other than the ones I am using and I cannot find anything in my task manager either. This has been  a problem I've been dealing with for a while, thanks in advance for helping me solve it!

I sure would like to turn off the cloaking device on my Pocket Drives. Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

As the title implies I'm currently having 2 issues, the first major issue is that my PC is turning on/off and which the second is that my other hard drive suddenly up and disappeared on me.

1. My computer started to turn on and off on me for no reason while I was trouble shooting my initial problem of the HDD when I fiddled around inside my case. Eventually ripping everything out of the case and "card-boarding" the motherboard, which it worked and stayed on and as I gradually put everything back together it was all good, until I sat the motherboard back onto the brass/copper studs that sits inside the frame and screwed it in. At that point my computer started to turn on and off again which lead me to believe it's some manner of a grounding issue. I have no clue on what to do at this point about going about this, should I just get a new case made of plastic? My current full tower case is all steel.

2. While I was watching a movie which was stored on my second hard drive is started to freeze/lag/repeat all that good stuff on me. It froze my computer up completely and I was force to hard reset the computer, when I booted my PC back up I found that my second hard drive had up and vanished on me. So I went into my bios and saw it "working" I switch to ACHI to see if it'll make a difference but I got a BSoD so I left it at IDE. At that point my computer gave me the option to "repair windoe files" or start normally. Both options made my... Read more

Ill give you a description of the situation:

I have a IBM Thinkpad Laptop,A Compaq Presario both connected to a Linksys Router which is connected to my modem.

Then I got myself a used Emachines with a cracked motherboard and the memory installed upside down (LOL!)

I brought it to a technician,got it fixed,reinstalled Windows Xp,and the rest

No I want to connect it to the same network as the two other computer. Now,by default,Windows Xp creates a connection as soon as it detects one, named Local Area Connection ,right? So when I put in my ethernet,It made one! Great!

So then I try to go on internet explorer and type to test and it doesn't work.
I check the internet connections and it showed me that packets are being sent but none get received.

Yet! the compaq worked fine with the same process.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Gettin Computer To Goto Welcome Screen Afte Rbeing Idle For A Set Amount Of Time

I'm just guessing at this, so try it and see.

First, go to Start...Run...and type in "control userpasswords2" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Then, uncheck the box that says "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer". Then, click OK.

Next, go to Start...Control Panel...Display...ScreenSaver tab. The little password box should now say "On resume, display Welcome Screen" (instead of asking for the password).

At least that's how it worked out on my system. If it doesn't work for you, you can easily reset it to the way it was.

I have several computers on a homegroup network. I also have a Denon amp networked into the same network.

Three of the computers (and their windows media files) are available to the Denon amp through its menu functions. I can access them and play their playlists. (It's a Denon 3312Ci; all network functions for it seem good.)

A fourth computer is invisible to the Denon. (I've been to the a/v websites. They all say to go to a windows network website. LOL!) The fourth computer happens to have 90% of my music on it. It is my "main" computer.

Something is obviously configured differently with that one. How do I even begin to find out what it is?

(ALL other network functionality seems to be good. I've got the Denon amp on a fixed IP address within my network.)

Thank you.

In the advanced sharing settings at the Network and Sharing Center, make sure that Network Discovery and File and Printer Sharing etc. are turned on.

If there is a third party anti virus software installed then you may need to configure it for access.

Yesterday, my XP Pro SP3 system lagged dramatically and then displayed a taskbar message that said, "Critical Error - Damaged hard drive clusters detected. Private data is at risk". I figured this was malware but couldn't find anything in task manager that looked out of the ordinary in applications or processes to end task on. So I restarted the computer. When I did, about half of my desktop icons were gone and my IE favorites were gone as well.

Upon further inspection, my favorites folder was actually gone from my user profile in windows explorer. The other user profiles were fine. In windows explorer, I typed in the address location of my user profile's favorite folder, c:\documents and settings\username\favorites and BLAM!! the favorites folder instantly appeared in the tree. The "hidden" properties attribute had been checked and unchecking brought back all my favorites.

So my favorites are back.

Malwarebytes and Windows Security Essentials both showed no infection on full scans. So I ran offline hardware diagnostics on the hard drive just to make sure there wasn't a problem with it. It passed all tests.

But I'm still missing some desktop icons. I don't remember all the icons that have vanished, but if I try to recreate a url shorcut that can't be seen on the desktop, or in windows explorer under ANY profile, windows balks and says the filename already exists. I can recreate the shortcut under another name without issue... Read more

Hi there,

So in April I decided to go all in on an Alienware 18 which I use for business and pleasure. After a couple weeks I started noticing the computer would not wake from sleep during extended times such as over night. I would simply close the lid at night and open it in the morning where the HDD light would come on and then the computer would be frozen in a state with a black screen before bootup where I am forced to hold the power button down to reset. It would then tell me that the computer was shut down incorrectly etc.

I finally had Dell tech support work on it who were absolutely fantastic at the time. They went through all kinds of system setting changes including how the computer sleeps, updated video and MANY other drivers including a reinstall of windows. Problem persisted.

Next they sent a tech out to replace the Video cards... problem persisted.

Next they replaced the HDD's, motherboard, and video cards again... problem persisted.

They were completely stumped so they sent me a brand new system which is even better than the last one I had!

After a few days I noticed this system is doing the exact same thing. I called tech support and the original guy is now in another department so I'm dealing with a new guy now who is starting from scratch again with this system. I spoke with their manager as this guy wanted to reset the computer to factory again and he also suggested that they are 99% sure that a reinstall of windows (or an alien res... Read more

Answer:Invisible BSOD on computer wake after long periods - Hard reset needed

Welcome to 7F.

Your dumps ared indicating a device driver as being the problem but none are showing.

Driver Verifier will stress your drivers and cause BSODs if any fail and will flag them up in the dump files. Follow this tutorial to enable/disable it. Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable

Enable Driver Verifier but only enable these options:
Standard settings and IRP logging step 3.
Don't enable Force Pending I/O Requests

Make a System Restore point before enabling Driver Verifier.

Your system will act very sluggishly while DV is enabled, this is normal as your drivers will be being subjected to heavy testing in order to make them crash.

Hi nathan30

Did this just recently start?

Is this a new device or new install?

Is your computer connected wirelessly and is the network set to private? (not public).

Could you fill out system specs please.

Hi,When I ping one IP
Sometimes the below error:
What is difference between?
 Destination net unreachable.
 Destination Host unreachable.

Answer: Destination net unreachable.

Here are answers to your problems
For problém diagnostics you will need to analyze output from ipconfig /all, from routing tables when you work behind local network and network analyzer for detailed analysis of packet exchane (Wireshark will do the trick)

I have the same issue with my computer network connection. And the error message says Destination net unreachable

Can you guys pleae help out on this. I need this very urgently.

Answer:Destination net unreachable

Even though it appears you're having the same problem, please start a new thread when you have a new issue. It's very difficult to keep two problems straight and who's working on what in a single thread.

I've created a new thread for your issue here.

Note: You will need to post complete details of your configuration and your specific issue in this new thread for us to help you.

Thanks for your cooperation.

I'm not sure what it might be but one day I noticed that about a dozen of websites I open regularly became unavailable. "The connection has timed out."

nslookup works OK and I get IP address resolved, I also tried tracert, it goes through 5-10 hops and then times out. I can still open some web sites but not all of them. I can open all web sites via online proxy so they are all up and running.

I have ADSL modem connected to my laptop, no routers, the modem doesn't have any static routing tables, so as far as I understand it, the list of hosts I see in tracert output depends on my ISP router.

The ISP is able to open all "problem" web sites on their side, but I can't get any help from them as they say that since tracert goes beyond their network it's not their problem and it's my computer actually blocking some of web sites.

I'm not aware of any software on my laptop which could possibly do that as well as I don't have any routing/proxy programs installed, so it seems that it might be a virus or some malicious software.

So what do I do? Try to find a virus or can it be a system issue?

Answer:some web sites became unreachable

Hi I'm new to this site but I'd like to help you.

Try downloading a alternate browser (I reccomend Google Chrome). This will make sure the problem isn't in your browser at least. Also can you ping any of those sites you can't get to?

I have a number of XP and W7 PCs in a domain with internet connection, all working fine.

I've wired my Linux laptop to the network, DHCP, and it can talk to other devices on the network. But I can't get connected to any site outside the network - ping to any external address gives " Destination Net Unreachable" is the correct address for the router, and any Windows machine can ping to any address via that same router.

Any ideas please?

Problem: cannot access All 4 computers on my home network cannot access I do not get porn I just time out.

What I've done so far:
numerous anti-spyware programs have been run including spybotS&D and HijackThis (both before I found your forums), AdwareSE.
called both and (my provider) with no luck, both say everything is fine on their end.

I have followed the FAQ with two problems:

-I mistakenly exited out of Counterspy without the log.
-Bitdefender crashed just as it was going to show the "detected problems" Explorer was the named culprit. I do remember mostly trojans found in email (trash box, Eudora Pro) that were deleted.

I do have the other 4 log files. I hope you can help, I have a website at that needs attending to. is unreachable

logs continued.

2 nights ago I purchased a Linksys WPC54GS for my laptop so that I could access the Free Wireless Internet at the motel I was staying at in Ohio, and it worked great. Now I am in a hotel in CA that has free Wireless Internet access also, and my computer says I'm connected, but when I try to access the internet I get "Host is unreachable or DNS server culd not resolve the DNS name." Can anyone tell me what to do to get online?

Answer:Host is unreachable

Go down to the front desk and ask them for their network settings/codes etc. See if they can help you since its their network.
