Internet connection randomly dies shortly

Question: Internet connection randomly dies shortly

Hi there,

I can't seem to figure this problem out. Every so often (from seconds to a couple minutes) my internet connection will fail, but only for less than a second. Typically no one would even notice this, but it becomes a problem when you use software like Messenger or you play games online. The disconnection is long enough to sign you off.

I've been watching a ping I set to for a good 10 minutes, and sure enough, there are occasional spots where for just 1-3 attemps it will time out, then get replies just fine again.

I use a wired ethernet connection, not wireless. The ethernet port is part of my motherboard, its a fairly modern motherboard, not an old one, and I made sure the driver for it was up to date. Any ideas?

If this helps:

Preferred Solution: Internet connection randomly dies shortly

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My internet connection on my Vista machine dies after a few hours. If I restart, the connection will work again, but will die after a few hours again. I've used my computer with several different routers and for example in my friends' home network so I know the problem is in my computer because the internet connection always dies the same way. Usually if I'm listening music from my Spotify, that connection oddly stays on with that, same goes with some java based games like net poker and so on...messenger connection problem diagnostics say that problems are in the ports. Sometimes i've just been too tired to reboot and just kept doing something else with my computer without the internet connection then maybe an hour later the connection comes back to life. This problem is getting kinda old already that it's not funny anymore. Would appreciate if somebody had even a slight suggestion to repair this problem.

Not sure if I should post this here or the networking forum but I assume some nice patron will direct me to the correct place if I'm wrong.

For a while now, and for no apparent reason, my internet connection completely dies. But, it's only to my computer. My computer will slow down DRAMATICALLY, stuttering violently as I try to do anything. But if I restart my computer it comes back on as if no problem was ever there.

I am hooked through a router through an ethernet cable and my wife is connected to it wirelessly and she is never affected.

Is this an XP problem, hardware, or maybe even the hardwire ports of my router?

Help! =(

Hi Everyone

In my previous house I would lose connection to the internet about 2-3 times a week. Since moving into my new house it happens more like 5-15 times a day. The internet light on my modem goes out and the broadband light blinks on and off.

95% of the time when I lose the connection it is for less than 2 minutes. But on some occasions it can take a half hour to work again.

Some more info:
- It happens on all 6 computers/devices in my household at the same time. (2 Macs, Win7 PC, iPad, iPod, PS3).
- All devices are connected wirelessly to modem. But, I have also tried Ethernet and still have same problem.
- I have tried 2 modems (including a brand new one that my ISP sent after I complained).
- I have tried using different jack points and cables.
- When the connection fails, I am still able to wirelessly access my modems config page. So wifi connection is not the issue.
- My ISP sent a technician out. He replaced one cable out by the road, but this did not solve the problem.

I have spent a few hours over multiple days on the phone with my ISP. First they said there was no problem with the line. Then they said there is definitively something wrong with the line. Then nothing wrong, then something wrong. Finally after they monitored the line for 3 separate 24 periods, they decided that the problem was solved. And I thought so too... I had good connection for about 36 hours. But then it started failing again, so far today I have lost connection about 10 times... Read more

Hi everyone, I've been having the same problem for months now and have finally decided to try to get some help after attempting multiple fixes. I use both a wired connection and wireless connection on my new laptop depending on where I am in the house (if I'm hooked up to my docking station its wired, otherwise i'll be on the wireless). The wired connection works fine, but the wireless connection will often completely die on me without any apparent cause. I'm pretty sure the problem is with my laptop due to the following reasons:

1) My dad uses the same connection when he works from home, and told me he doesn't have any problems with it.
2) Just for testing services, I tried using a neighbors WiFi connection, and received the same results.

I've tried changing my DNS server between OpenDNS, Google's DNS, etc. and have not had any luck. I made sure my wireless cards weren't sleeping by un-checking 'allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'. I uninstalled Hamachi to make sure it wasn't messing up any of my settings and still had the same problems. I've updated all my drivers and even re-installed them.

Just to describe what exactly happens during these disconnects, any live connections prior to the point where the internet disconnects stay alive (usually, such as Skype calls, AIM connections, certain games, etc.) and will stay open until closed. Web pages behave in a similar fashion, and in fact will ... Read more

Hello. I am in need of advice once again. I'm staying at my uncles house who uses Keyon internet service so its like broadband with some sort of dish? Anyways...

The speeds were pretty random and slow. Spikes of 3000 pings and averages of 600. Updated the firmware (7 years old) and average is under a hundred now. However the internet still just completely dies for random amounts of time... 2 seconds to a few minutes. Pings timeout to google or yahoo but not my router.

As far as the setup goes, there is a dish or antennae they have aimed a little dish on the roof towards a few miles away. The "modem" is in a plastic box attached to it. The cable runs into literally the cheapest "splitter adapter" ive ever seen, which wont work if you hook up the modem line into "data out" and the router line into "data in", which confuses me in the first place. Shouldn't that be the other way around?

Anyways, I tried wifi and wired connection. I didn't try to bypass the router completely but I don't think it will make a difference. I decided to get a ladder and look at the "modem" and I was a little shocked to say the least. I opened up the big plastic thing that stores it and it literally is just a piece of like motherboard mounted with one little screw, covered in ladybugs and cobwebs. So I sighed and just left it alone.

So now, average ping is very tolerable. 50-100. Speed is at about 2mbps which is fine. I just don... Read more

Hello, my T60 (2007) dies shortly after powering on. Quick problem description:worked fine this morning, was in suspend (ubuntu) with well charged battery. When opening the lid again it suddenly died (power off).On power-on it the power comes up, the hd starts up (short whirring noise) but before anything else happens the it dies off again. Screen doesn't turn on, nothing.Tried removing the hd, removed the dvd from the dock, removed battery and power plug completely for a while, nothing seems to help.On a side note: when plugged in and powered off the plug-led is lit and the battery led being lit shortly blinks (turn off for an instant) regularly, may be once every 2 seconds. Does anybody have any ideas, help would be highly appreciated, need to finish some work for Monday :-S Thanks in advance, all the best, Thorsten

Answer:T60 dies shortly after power-on

update:tested removing the memory, get the one-three-three-one beeps, tested different constellations of ram (exchanged the two ram bars, used either of them in either of the sockets) but as soon as the ram is installed i get the same:power-on, the fan starts, a second later the fan seems to lose power and slowly stops, another second and the machine dies as if power-plug removed.removed the keyboard to check the fan, but even though it was quite dusty it turns without problems. checked all connectors, closed the whole machine, tried again, but all to no avail. :-Sthe manual seems to indicate "System board" problems. does anybody have a clue if I can test that (to make sure it's not one of the two ram dimms, since installing them only gets the machine as far as failing)?any help would be highly appreciated best, Thorsten

OK please help me!!! I am running the following machine:

Nvidia AN8 Ultra motherboard, AMD 3700 processor,
1 gig ram, 250 gig SATA harddrive, nvidia 6600 graphics

Windows XP professional SP2 fully patched & upgraded

Firewall: Sygate
Antivirus: AVG

My ISP is Telewest Blueyonder Broadband, I have a Motorala SURFboard cable modem SB5101E, it is connected to my PC via an ethernet card built in to my motherboard: I have a 1934 net adapter & Nvidia nforce networking controller these are both enabled.

My broadband works for a few hours but then stops, the four green lights are still on the modem indicating that the modem is still getting a signal & I know it is not my ISP going down as this happens frequently & people in my area who are also with them have no problems.

I have disabled all the power saving features & disabled the enable wake lan thingy in BIOS.

This never happened when I ran thru USB, so it could be my network adapter.
Does any one else have this prob?

I may not have all the correct drivers or have set it up properly

Please help

Answer:Internet Connection Dies Please Help

This may be totally offbase but when you listed your motherboard it rang a bell about something I read in another post. I looked at the specs and one of the features is "Native NVIDIA Firewall via NF4 Ultra".
I'm wondering if you have that feature enabled and if it could possibly be conflicting with your connection. I think there are some bugs with that firewall feature and I don't know if it has been fixed yet. There was a thread about that recently and I can't remember what was said.
You might check that out.
Someone else might have some other ideas I'm sure.

Just getting this into My Postings to find it, as I'm having similar problems sporadically lately. My error messages vary - Unable to establish connection/no answer/line busy. Then mysteriously OK. Maybe the problem's somewhere else, and I don't need to correct anything (except impatience)?I'm on pay-as-you-go dialup with Eircom (Ireland's equivalent of BT).What sometimes seems to work with me is changing some ISP setting, changing it back again & resetting. My comp specs are Core 2 Duo 2.4, 8 gigs of ram, Asus p5b-e motherboard, Geforce 8800 640mb ram, Killer NIC Network card.

I've had this problem since I moved into my new townhome 6 months ago, which is unfortnately the same time I built my new comp from the ground up, so I can't really pinpoint if it's my comp or isp. I have Roadrunner, and for whatever reason, when I'm downloading large files via torrent or IRC or even on the web, my internet connection will die, however the lights on my modem remain all lit up. It usually takes roughtly 10-20 minutes before all downloads will cease, and I cannot get a web browser or any Internet program to work even though the cable modem says I'm connected. I have to unplug the power cable to the modem so it basically reboots, then I can resume downloads without rebooting the actual computer.

I thought this problem was with my onboard Ethernet adapter on the mb, so I bought the Killer network card, still Internet activity dies within 20 minutes if, but only if I'm downloading. If I'm not downloading, the comp will retain a true connection all day and night. So, then I thought the problem was Roadrunner, so I had them replace the modem, and still the problem persists. It's as if my computer says to me, "I can't take anymore downloading right now, you're screwed," and kills my Internet connection, virtually invisibally.

I don't think it's a ram problem because I can play games for hours just fine. It can't be a hard drive ... Read more

Yesterday for some reason my internet connection just dies like clock work every 10 minutes then I have to restart my computer and it's fine for another 10 minutes. I have no idea what would be causing this, I have ran adaware and spybot and haven't found much. Any help would be much appreciated. Also I have another computer hooked up on the same network and it's working fine and hasn't dropped connection yet! I am using windows XP and I was using AVG Free and Adaware on this computer but I just uninstalled them hoping it would help.

My problem is that my internet connection has a tendancy to disconnect after relatively short periods of downloading and online gaming. Usually after approx. 30 - 45 minutes, or sooner if the connection is being heavily used. It is guaranteed to drop out within minutes of heavy UPLOADING.

At this point, the problem can only be fixed by REBOOTING my machine. Reseting my router or modem, and/or renewing my IP has no effect. I've run several anti-spyware programs and nothing has been found.

My suspicion at this point rest on the Ethernet card, but I can't be sure.

Does anyone have any ideas? Also, is there any software available that will allow me to monitor my computers activity to see what happens at the moment the connection dies?

Answer:Internet connection dies until restart!

My guess is the card also. I have a Dlink Gigabit NIC in my Dimension 8300 that I think is doing the same thing, It happens randomly but that is the only thing I can trace it back to.

I have two computers, an xbox and a ps3 that are all connected and just fine.
The only issue is my computer (The one that belongs to me of the two)

It loses connection while everything else is still able to be connected
because of this I figure it must be my computer that has the problem,
but the thing is I have no idea what that would be.

If anyone has any idea of what on my computer could be causing the problem
please let me know.

I have ran AVG to scan for viruses, Scanned with Malwarebytes, and use system defragment
I've tried deleting useless things on my computer to no avail.

Answer:Only my computer's internet connection dies

would you post the following tests when the internet is working OK, and then repeat ALL the tests when the internet disconnects.
Make sure you also indicate on the reply which tests are for what condition.

if you are connected by wireless, please include the xirrus screen shots for both conditions - see how below.

Please post back here the make and exact model of the router and if you have a separate modem, the make and exact model of the modem.

Please make a note of the status of the lights on the modem and on the router when working normally - post that light status here.
Now when the internet disconnects make a note of the status of the lights for the modem and router here again. also note which have changed.

What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, Mcafee , AVG etc

ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

Hi guys - hope you can help...

Over the past few weeks my Internet connections seems to suddenly stop after a few hours. No website can be accessed; and only a system reboot will 'revive' the internet connection.

I've ran anti-spyware, anti-virus and anti-trojan scanner but all have shown a clean system. I cannot understand what's going on?

Here's my HiJakThis log... perhaps someone can help.

I just installed SP1 for Vista, and SP1 + Vista fix for Visual Studio + SP2 for SQL Server 2005. After the update I noticed that the 6To4 Adapter had the yellow exclamation mark (!). So I deleted in the hope that Device Manager finds it again and I can reinstall, but now it is not being found. Afterwards I started getting Internet disconnections.

After some time online, and without any exact timing, totally random, the connection kind of dies. Only network traffic travelling on HTTP seems to die. I remain connected on IRC, MSN, Skype and ICQ. Browser action just dies. I tried different browsers, Firefox, Chrome, IE to no avail. I could not start any connection.

It seems the DNS is lost. However other computers connected to the same router and with the same wifi router remain connected so its definately something which regards the Lenovo laptop.

Also this is the result of running "route print" now that the connection is dead (As I wrote this post the connection died. Had to restart and just submitted it after restart)

When I first connected to our wifi network, internet connection worked. Then it (Internet) stopped working, although I was connected to the wireless network. Now I've found out that changing SSID for the network will make the Internet connection work again. But then it will stop working after a certain amount of time/traffic/something.This problem only occurs with one of the computers that is connected to the network. Also, the problem only occurs with wireless connection - using a network cable will always give me Internet access.Someone got a clue? I don't want to have to switch the SSID every other day.

Answer:Internet connection through wireless router dies

It would help if I knew the make, model and revision of the router in question.

Got this odd problem that has been going on for the past few weeks. Internet connection slow's down to a crawl, then finally dies after about 30-60 minutes of usage. Forcing me to pull the power to the cable modem, and router. Wait a few minutes, plug them in, and it's okay for a short time. Kinda thought it was my netgear wireless router. I swap the router out with an older SMC router, still same issue. Yesterday, I go into Comcast, get a different cable modem. Got that up and running all excited. But after about 30 minutes, the problem comes back. I got two computers connected to the router issue happens with both. So I pull the nic cable going from the router to my FreeBSD box, thinking maybe a bad nic, bad cable, something funky going on there. No luck with that. Throw the cat 5 cable connected to my onboard nic, to another nic I had in a pci slot. Still nothing. Ran a virus scan, thinking maybe a virus eating up my bandwidth. Didn't find anything. I ran ad-ware a few weeks back, and that looked okay. Just curious if anyone has any other suggestions. Nothing has changed in my setup. Really don't want to have Comcast come out and test the line. Plus I'm moving in a week anyway.

Any ideas, suggestions, anything I'm missing?

Answer:Cable Internet-Connection dies after about 30 minutes

Sounds like the same shit my ISP was pulling on me when I still had dial-up. Basically it was the server's IP number that for some stupid reason kept jumping around changing IP numbers (don't ask me why, to this day I still don't know why they did something like that). The only "fix" was to ask my ISP what one of their confirmed IP numbers was, and then set everything to connect to that IP number only (DHCP off and all that). But soon after I got ADSL so the problem automagically went away...

About your problem: have you tried to flush your DNS entries? Assuming you're using Winbloze:

I have Vista Ultimate been using it for about the last year never had any serious issues with anything including my internet connection.

Now tonight suddenly my internet goes down about every 30 minutes out of no where doesn't matter what I'm doing or even if the computer is just sitting idle. I have to unplug the modem and replug it in to get it working again. I'm connecting directly from Motorola Surf Board 5100 modem to the PC with Ethernet connection. no other pcs or game consoles in the house on this connection. Can anyone shed any light on what's going on or what I need to do to start figuring out what the problem is.

It's definitely not my isp all the lights that are suppose to be lit on the modem are staying on like they should.

Thanks for any help

Hi, I'm having a problem with my internet connection on my wireless laptop.

My laptop frequently says "cannot display the web page" as if i wasnt connected to the internet when i try to browes the internet. My laptops network monitor says it is connected, and i can share files with my other desktop so i am connected... the internet just doesn't work. I used the troubleshooter and the "check your connection" function on the web page (after it says "cannot display the web page" there is an option to "check for problems") and the application says that my internet connection is 100%..... so the computer thinks it is fully connected and functioning properly but i can't browse the internet....

I've been fixing the problem by logging out and logging back in... it works about 75% of the time... other times i have to wait about 5 minutes before it will work...

I'm thinking it is a problem with my router or the desktop interfering because my laptop cant find any problems of it's own. I'm not having this problem at all with my desktop and I was recently at a hotel and had no such problem with the hotel wifi....

This problem is getting very frustrating and becoming a huge hastle! Please help! Post if you need more info to help me.

I have recently gotten a very weird problem that I can not get rid off.

When I start the computer cold I can access homepages thru internet explorer and firefox, (both are set to find internet settings automatic), but after a short period of time (can be all from a minute to 10-15 minutes) my internet browsers "dies". No 404 error or Timeouts, no loading of the page either. The browsers loading icon, the waving flag in IE and rotating dots in Firefox, just flashes and then return to its static position.

When I have proper internet connection, I have a UPnP Gateway that "works" but when my internet connection has "died", it says under properties that it "does not work" (sorry guys that I can give word-for-word since I am on a japanese OS).
Even when the internet connection does not work, I can PING any working site with success and even TRACERT.

First I thought that the ADSL Modem might be broken so I called my ISP and got a new one. Same problem.

My Specs are;
Dell Dimension 8200
Core 2 Duo E6300
XP Media Center 2005 (Jap)
NOD 32

No Firewall
No Router, the Computer is connected directly to the ADSL Modem

I would like to say that to suspect my cousin is a bad thing. But the guy knows about computers and networking more than I do. So I come to you guys for help. Ever since Thursday of last week, my cousin came over to this computer and basically hooked it up on the workgroup he had just made. I was alright with it. There are 2 other computers in this house, his, this one and his brother's.

Well. Friday all of a sudden, the internet on this computer died. And I couldn't re-establish a connection. The thing is. The computer was apparently still connected to the LAN. Only the connection to the internet died.

Come saturday we stayed over at his sister's house due to a hurricane, I was using her laptop. He saw me on the internet, said he was going to go to the bathroom and all of a sudden, once again the internet died. Same problem as here.

We returned Sunday evening. And yesterday I hooked up this computer directly to the modem for instant internet access. Later on that evening he hooked it up back to the router. For over 5 hours there was internet on this computer, when I wasn't using it. Instead his sister was. All of a sudden I am able to use the computer while he was away, everything was fine. It didn't die, nothing happened. When the guy got home he saw me on the computer. And sure enough moments later the internet died.

I'm trying to not think much of it. That perhaps it's a networking problem.. but the other two computers never lose... Read more

Answer:Solved: Internet connection on only this computer dies at random

sounds suspicious to me...

when you lose connection try to reestablish connection: START > Control Panel > Network Connections (double click)

you should see a new window open, look for the "connection" that is "connected" (you may see more than 1, but only 1 should NOT BE disabled).

first insure that you are getting dynamic IP from router.
Right click on the "connected" LAN > PROPERTIES (click)
new window should appear (scroll down to bottom, click ONCE on (TCP/IP) to highlight it. then click PROPERTIES button. In the General tab, make sure "Obtain an IP address automatically" is selected and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" is also selected. Click OK, then OK again to close window.

Now we try to re-obtain new lease; This time double-click on the "connected" LAN, from the window that appears, click Support TAB, then click REPAIR button. it shouuld try to re-establish a connection.

If he bumps u off again, just REPAIR it again. if this keeps happening then you know for sure that he is bumping u off =8||

It sounds like you have spyware/malware. Download ad-aware and scan, And see if it detects anything. If not then it is probably a SOCKS problem.

I have a Windows 2000 Pro system that has a quirky thing going on with it. I have had to use Clam AV (AVG won't run on this) to scan for viruses, and it did find a lot of worms though I'm not completely confidant it was able to remove everything.

The computer can access the Internet with no problems if you boot into Safe Mode With Networking, but under a normal boot, it will lose connectivity to the Internet very shortly after logging it. I tested this using "ping -t" to do an endless ping and the connection would go from replies with no problem to "Host not resolved" (I think that's what it says). This seems to be related to something with DNS, I think. Because I can connect the PC to another laptop via a crossover cable, assign static IP's to each, and they will ping each other. But once the connection is cut off, it won't ping the router or anything on the Internet.

I downloaded Hijack This via safe mode, restarted, and ran two scans. The first scan was done while the Internet connection was still working and google's pings were coming back okay.

The second scan was done about a minute later, very shortly after internet connectivity was acting foul. I've attached both log files to this post, so hopefully someone might be able to tell me what to try to get this working right.

I have 2 routers set up, my internet randomly randomly loses/regains connection.

First router is connected to modem, that's an Actiontec router that's wireless. Second router is a D-link DI 624 wireless router. All the computers are connected "Wired", only wireless devices are the laptop(which is connected wireless to Router 1), and Wii(which is connected wireless to Router 2). Router 2 is a brand new router btw, and I upgraded the firmware on it.

So here's how my connection is setup: Internet > Modem > Router 1 > Router 2 > This computer. If I simply directly connect this computer to Router 1(instead of connecting it to Router 2), the disconnections doesn't happen.

Now at first I had only one router. I installed a second router by simply shutting off comp, plugging a network cable from router 1 to router 2, then simply plugging an additional cable from router 2 to my computer.

I am not sure if I set up 2 routers correctly but all I know is that it works fine "sometimes", the wireless connection(from the second router) always seems to work but the wired connection from Router 2 to this comp.
The intervals varies, some days it may be 3 minutes between each disconnection and reconnection(which isn't too annoying), some days it may be 15 seconds(extremely annoying). Sometimes the disconnections do not happen at all.

Here's what I've tried:
1. I've tried rebooting the router, doesn't fix problem.

Answer:Have 2 routers set up, my internet randomly randomly loses/regains connection

Some things you can try here.
Change the channel on the router, I like channels 1, 6, and 11 in the US.
Update the firmware to the latest version available on the manufacturer's site.
Reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure.

Many times these measures will resolve a lot of intermittent issues.

For multiple routers, I also suggest this configuration.

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses through, I'd assign the secondary router as it's IP address, for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and nei... Read more

Dear all,
I generally have good WiFI connection, but in two rooms so I am running a TP-Link system for Wifi through my powernet, which provides me with WiFI in our working space. No problems here.
I have been noticing that on my laptop, when I sit in the living space, my internet connection is dropping WITHOUT losing connection to the WiFi network. This makes me reset my adapter but mostly without succes. Sometimes it spontaneously regains internet connectivity. This happens at random (to me). My cell phone doesn't have the same problem, nor does my GF's computer.
I notice that when i go back to the workspace (where wifi is distributed through my TP-link), more often then not I instantly regain connection. Which makes me think this is a problem of IP adress that is different when switching from Wifi through router and Wifi through TP-link?

Here is the runout for my ipconfig /all and

Maybe this is a hardware issue?

Answer:Win XP randomly Dies

You can test the PSU with a multimeter. Do a search on the web and you will find info on how to do this. Also, make sure the memory you put in is good. Download memtest. You'll need to put it on a bootable floppy. Then boot from the floppy and run it. It will run continously. Leave that running overnight. If it is the memory it will tell you. And if it is a problem with Winxp you'll know it because the system won't have locked up. If it does lock up the problem isn't Winxp. But rather a hardware issue.

It's not until im in the actual game that my pc just shuts down. i don't notice any lag nor do i get a grey or blue screen, it just shuts down as if there were no electricity anymore. I've cleaned my pc for dust, checked my cooler, those seem not to be the issue. I honestly have no clue what it could be. Please help

Before i start, I am Running:

WinXP-Pro, Service Pack 3
2.22 GHz Athlon 64 3500+ Processor
2 Gigs of RAM
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT Graphics Card

What appears to happen is that once in a blue moon, without any prior warning, the entire computer will lock up solid for about 15 seconds then black screen me and none of my input or output devices will work. That means, Mouse, Keyboard, sound, Monitors, etc. They all die simultaneously. The odd part is, the computer is still working as far as I can tell as the system doesn't even hiccup.

It WAS doing this more than it is now, however it seems to have reduced somewhat. I'm guessing that it has something to do with my power supply as me replacing the 350 watt supply with a 550 watt supply (for a completely different problem) seems to have reduced the occurence of this issue. Instead of happening once or twice a week it now happens once or twice every 2 or 3 weeks. It's still annoying when it happens. Anyone have any clue?

I just received my new X1 Carbon yesterday. When I booted it up the first time the computer died after I set up username and password in Windows. Next time the same screen appeared but the username was ofcourse taken already. I logged into windows and the computer died. After 10-20 HDD checks the computer logs into windows and I can install some software (Visual Studio etc), but then it just dies again. Sometimes it can't even login to windows before it dies. I've tried to format and reinstall windows but it doesn't help, sometimes I can use it for one hour, and sometimes just for 10 seconds. I can't really say that I can see a pattern in this whether I'm using the AC chord or not.. I've also done a memory check and a harddrive check without any errors. I guess I have to return it and wait for a new one.. really disappointing =( Any ideas Lenovo?

I have a user with a dell latitude d620 laptop. Her external usb mouse stops working every few hours-- apparently when she's doing nothing out of the ordinary, the "installing new hardware" dialog comes up randomly, and when she cancels out of it, the mouse will stop working at a slightly later time. Even the red LED light on the bottom of the mouse goes out.

We've tried different models USB mice, attaching it directly to a USB port on the laptop, via the USB port on the laptop dock, and even with a USB->PS/2 adapter via the dock's PS/2 port.... all with the same results. Every time, when the mouse is working fine, it'll pop up the 'installing new hardware' dialog, and afterwards it just suddenly stops working.

Any ideas? I have no idea what's going on.

She's running windows xp sp3 with symantec endpoint, all the usual office software, really nothing out of the ordinary.

Question: Y500 randomly dies

Hello, Borught a y500 on amazon a few months ago, its runs great. However, the laptop suddenly just dies randomly, no blue screen, no shut down menu. It just dies, I reboot and check event viewer and its says it crashed(kennel-power). So then I checked for viruses, ran scans for chkdsk, sfc /scannow, and memory diagnostics, everything was fine. It also didn't overheat since the laptop died without gaming at all. The barrtery was plugged in as well I reset windows 8 just to check if its the OS's fault. It just died again today. If it's a hardware issue, what can I do to find out what component of hte computer is wonky? Would the limited warranty help me?

Got my X1 Carbon yesterday. Does have the loose clickpad. Worse issue - it would power down randomly - as in you are typing and suddenly it goes completely dead, as in "lights out" or someone pull the plug type dead. Also does not sleep properly - often when it goes to sleep it dies and you get an improper windows shutdown warning when you restart it. Happens both with AC power and battery power. Was on hold for 1.5 hours trying to reach a sales rep to make an exchange and got disconnected. Tried to do factory restore just to see what will happen but F11 on startup does not work. The notebook looks great but otherwise I can't say I am very happy with my experience.

Well... I had a Win 7 Ultimate 64bit on this very machine (the one in my preferences) for almost 3 years until the moment when I said to myself: OK, time to refresh. And that only because my port 80 would die sometimes....sometimes thrice an hour for 10-15 min, sometimes twice a day. But it would happen every day. I re-installed with the hope it was just a bad Win installation but it happened again after just an hour in. What I tried? Well, I certainly tried a new router, but it didn't help. I knew it wouldn't since I also run Linux and OS X in home network and none is affected by this. I scanned old and new Win 7 with every possible malware finder, antivirus..etc. Even bought one (I have an "allergy" when it comes to A/Vs and such in general).. I went drastic today, I disconnected all devices (hdds, usbs, dvdroms, pcie) just to prove my point.. left a single 60 GB SSD with brand new win 7 with default drivers .. Took several hours but I still lost port 80 (it seems to be just port 80 since only browsers and windows LIVE are affected on my system)...Skype, FTP, rsync.. they'll all work just fine while nothing else web-wise does.

Help please! Any suggestions will be tested and reported.

I've had this laptop over a year now, and just recently I've noticed when I leave it on a while and come back, either the audio of the entire laptop will die, or online videos just won't play. After restarting it goes back to normal until a few hours later when it happens again. I'm not sure what to do here. Can anyone help me out?

Answer:Audio/Video randomly dies?

You are not alone with this problem, since the last windows 8 update there is sound problems with a lot of PCs. You can try this quick solution here :

You just need to enter to the Control Panel -> security and System -> System -> Device Manager

Then look for "sound, video and game controllers" put the cursor over it press right-click and select "scan for hardware changes"

3 secs after that you will have your sound working again, you gonna need to repeat this procedure every time the sound is gone in your PC and till now it always worked to me.

This should solve your problem for now, we need to wait for Microsoft's next windows 8 update, it hopefully will fix the problem in a more permanent way.

I've just bought the components for a new PC, and a friend has built it for me. Everything works fine for hours at a time, I can be playing games, browsing the internet, whatever. Then all of a sudden the PC cuts out, exactly as it would in a power cut, except for an almighty fan noise that kicks in and stays on until I hold the power button down to force the power off. When I say an almighty fan noise, I mean the loudest noise I've ever heard a PC make. I thought it was a hair-dryer turning itself on in the room the first time it happened.

Temperature doesn't seem to be an issue, everything's always around 40 degrees, and before I took it home the guy who built it stress tested it for hours up to 90 degrees without any problem. It has always cut out during web browsing (never whilst gaming) although that's probably just a coincidence.

Any suggestions? I literally have no clue whatsoever, what with being somewhat PC illiterate.

My computer has been randomly dying when i play graphic intense games. (Everquest 2, World of Warcraft, etc) The monitor says no signal and goes to standby and the sound plays the last sound playing for a few loops. I need to hold down the power button to turn it off. Sometimes after this happens the computer refuses to turn on afterwards, i would have to try a couple of times.

I have tried booting with only 1 of the 2 ram sticks (for both) and came with the same results. If the computer was already able to boot, it will. If it wasn't, it wont. I do not have an extra video card to test, and do not want to buy one until i know it REALLY is the problem.

Any input/ suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have a Dell Inspiron 15-5547 running Win 8.1. Every now and then the scroll feature (two fingers vertical swipe to scroll the screen), and the two finger tap for right click, will stop working. When this happens, all the other features on the touchpad seem to work. If I restart the laptop it starts working again. I've tried going into services.msc and setting 'Human Interface Devices" to automatic startup, but it doesn't help. There's something else pretty weird also... When I go into the system tray (lower right), right click the touchpad icon, and select Touchpad Properties, it takes me into the Dell Pointing Devices windows. Inside this window, there is a sliding switch to disable the touchpad. When I disable it, the touchpad still works. Weird. Does anybody have any ideas how I can get this sorted out. I'm also using a wireless USB mouse on the same laptop, not sure if that makes a difference. Thanks.

Answer:Touchpad scroll dies randomly

Hi Jools

Personally I would look to see what touchpad driver version you are using and then either update it with an in-place update, or uninstall (my favourite option, then install new driver) the current driver and then re-install, as it may just be a slight corruption.

Latest driver HERE
Also a thought, when the touchpad stops with the scroll feature, had your laptop been left not used for a period of time, like hibernation?

I've had a X41 Tablet for about 2.5 years now. Just recently in the past month it will randomly die on me, meaning it will lose all power (No shutdown screen, nothing). If I try to turn it back on, nothing will happen. If I plug in the AC adapter, still no power. The only way I can get it to start back up is if I remove the battery, then place it back in forcefully or wiggle the battery around while it is back in the slot. If it does restart, the battery is still charged like nothing had happened. So it isn't the battery losing it's charge. I even tried putting another battery in from one of the X41 tablets in our office after the computer had died and it wouldn't start. My thoughts are it has something to with the connection on the board. Any other thoughts or ways to fix this? Thanks,JohnMessage Edited by cranjx on 06-11-2008 10:34 AM

My computer is being extremely odd right now. Randomly, usually while gaming but at other times also, it will just die. When this happens, it kinda just freezes while repeating the same sound on a loop. It loses all video and sounds like all the insides shut off. When it does this, hitting reset doesn't really work, and usually I cannot turn it off and back on. If I try, I get no beep in POST which indicates to me it would be CPU or MoBo...maybe a power supply?

If I unplug the power from the back for a minute, I can restart it and it will go through POST with the beep and all, and say CPU is unworkable or has been changed, and then play fine for anywhere between 5 minutes to many hours with no problems, then it will happen again.

I cannot tell what wattage my PS is. I built most of this computer about 5 years ago, and have since modded the power supply case, and lost the sticker. The CPU is the original one I got when I built it, the MoBo is 4 years old, and the video card is new.

I have Lenovo T500 Thinkpad for around one year. The laptop started to die randomly without any notification, no blue screen, no shut down, it just dies as if there is no power to the laptop. First I thought it could be a problem with the battery so I replaced my battery with the battery of another Lenovo T500. Even after that the problem persisted. So I removed the battery and just connected the laptop to AC power. The laptop does not die any more and I didnt face any issues. What could cause a problem like this? Whenever I connect the battery, the battery icon on the task bar says its charging and even if I use the battery alone the laptop works fine for sometime until it dies randomly. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have one laptop with Windows XP on it. The problem is that keyboard and mousepad both all together die randomly but usb mouse still works. This error occurs randomly. Not everytime i use the computer.

Anyone got the same problems?
Thanks in advance!

Answer:Keyboard / mousepad on laptop dies randomly

well based on the info provided my first guess would be that the keyboard is shot.... or ... if its a toshiba TE 2000 it might be the connector that the the keyboard ribbon connects to might be loose and need resoldering...but that would be the only 2 i can think of right at the moment... let us know how you fix it so it can possibly be of help to others

Hello, I've been having this problem for a little while now, and I figured this would be the right section to post it in (if not, please feel free to move it). This is the problem I've been having. While playing a 3D game, after a short while, one of 3 things will happen :1. The screen goes completely black and I'm left with no choice but to restart my computer.2. Similar to number one, except now the screen has random blocks of crazy colors all over, and I'm still left with no choice but to restart.3. The computer saves me the trouble of having to hit the power button, and just goes ahead and instantly restarts itself (screen goes black for a sec, and then I'm on the start up screen). And one more problem that I've chosen to separate from those 3; sometimes my computer just completely freezes and I need to restart. This happens seemingly randomly, at any time.I suspect this has something to do with a new video card I installed recently. I've had those 3 problems a bit before, but they are occurring much more frequently with the new card, and the random freezing thing is something new. So perhaps I installed it incorrectly, or its in some way not compatible with my system? I don't know, thats why I come here to ask you guys, any ideas whats going on?Video Card : Nvidia GeForce FX 5200**Might be worth noting that I did not purchase this hardware, it was given to me by a friend, therefor I have no documentation or disc with it**Misc System... Hello there,
I've been pondering around this problem for quite a while now and I finally decided to inquire the mighty crowds of computer wisdom i.e. you all

I've had this exact same problem in my previous system (with Windows 7 32-bit and quite a bit different internals) but it wasn't nearly as frequent as it is now (with Windows 7 64-bit and brand new CPU/MB/RAM/GPU) - however, this problem never happened on my previous box while it had Windows XP installed for a short while. Namely, the audio in Windows would stop working at random, every app that uses an audio interface would freeze when attempting to access any sink, I can't change the volume or mute anything, and I cannot even reset the Windows Audio service (reset times out) when that happens - the only solution is to reboot after which everything works just fine. The only difference between my old system and this one is that now I rarely get the reset procedure to 'freeze' on 'explorer.exe - Playing log-off sound...' (requiring to force restart to continue the process), but now it more often hangs at 'Shutting down...' screen requiring a physical restart.

My audio stack consists of the integrated sound (disabled, I don't need it, but in my previous setup it was enabled) and two USB-based sound sinks, namely Logitech Z Cin?ma speakers (Default Device) and Logitech G930 headset (Default Communications Device). Both are connected directly to the motherboard USB ports so it's not a problem with wonky USB hubs.

Answer:Windows audio randomly dies (probably USB-related)

Hiyya inco and welcome for starters I am definitely no expert mate I run a straight forward Asus Xonar DG card (the Xonar supports 7:1 systems) with my Ivy B with a Logitec Z 506 speaker set up and I have no probs at all, and it is a fairly cheap card at that.
Now I don't know what your audio set up is and it sounds like Ben Hur to me but just as a suggestion why not try a different brand card? I just really like the Asus control module that comes with mine and Asus do a really nice range of sound cards.

I am just getting a gut feeling the Logitec card is not the full dollar.

As the title says, my mouse stops working for a couple of seconds and then starts working perfectly again. It mainly happens when I am playing BF3, the game freezes for a second, then I hear the usb-removal sound Windows makes and the game unfreezes but the mouse is dead, then game freezes again for a second and mouse starts working. During the moment mouse is dead all other USB connected things works, only mouse that dies.
It has happened a few times before when im not in any game.

Why is this happening? I have never had any problem with this before.
I have tried putting my mouse a different USB port and it helped for a day or two and then it happened again.

I have had this same problem a few months ago. Although it happened with my mouse and keyboard simultaneously. My main harddrive was going bad. I replaced it and have not had the problem since. It was rather confusing at first as I had never seen these symptoms before from a bad harddrive.

it seems to happen most often when playing video or playing facebook games of any type. there is no warning the computer is just OFF. it has done this in safe mode as well and i wasn't even watching video or playing any games then. the only time it has done this before it was over heated. now sometimes it is hot and others it is not so it really seems random. no viruses, no malware, regular maintenance is kept up. if i can find a solution other than formatting the machine that would be great, or at least knowing if formatting would do me any good at all. i have downloaded hijack this and the TSGInfo follows:

I have had a perfectly fine internet connection since i've had this computer, but lately my connection will get really bad for a few minutes which makes playing most games impossible. I have tried changing the wifi channel on my router but it does not fix the problem for very long. I am using a linksys USB device to connect my pc to my router, could it be time for a PCI adapter?

if you're near the router try connecting by cable
if OK then wireless problem
if still same may be a problem with the router / line / ISP.

I got this laptop 2 months ago and it worked just fine but lately it's been dying randomly (the battery was at 98%) for absolutely no reason, no prompts all i can hear is a sound coming from the hard disk just as if the laptop was force shut down by holding the power button key. The laptop temperatures weren't high at the time (mostly all components @ 45°C). I use this laptop for college and it's been REALLY unreliable & I can't return it at this time since I'm at a dorm and i don't think it would even get a RMA since it happens randomly (you can't expect it at all - i only had word and microsoft edge opened and poof it's dead) - also i can always start it again instantly but SOMETIMES it dies again in the booting process. Also I successfully ran an Aida64 stress test until the battery died normally (it did NOT shut down). Any suggestions on what i should do? Edit: oops i sent this twice by accident

I've been having an issue with my X270 laptop since I bought it. The laptop is running Windows 10. What happens is randomly (this can take weeks, or days) the trackpad and pointing stick completely stops working. The only solution is to uninstall the drivers and reinstall them using an external mouse. I've tried various versions of the drivers, including the latest, and it still continues to happen. Any solutions to fix this?

Yet another problem with my peice of crap i call the "computer".

I got a new monitor at xmas, hoping to solve the problems i was haveing with my old one too no avail however.

Sometimes when im playing games etc it just looses the signal from the computer. Im using a 9800 pro 128MB graphics card, and cant understand why this is happening. The computer is still running fine though. It just wont display anything. Why could this be? I only got the card 3 months ago, it shoudlnt be doing this. It also at random intervals decides to artifact and under both circumstances i have to switch off for a while and wait before it will work again.

Things ive checked.

The card i sseated properly.
uninstalled it and reinstalled it
using latest drivers.
Using Direct X 9c
On board VGA automatically disables when AGP card is plugged in.
when uninstalled it seems to run fine from the motherboard connection (Hence im thinking dodgy card)
The car dis connected to the power supply as is nescessary.

Im totally stumped here. I can live with the situation but its not ideal, especially whe im playing gamesa and it just dies on me. Its as though the card is stopping sending the signal to my monitor.

Could this be a dodgy card? If so who do i contact about it? The place i bought the card from, or the manufacturer??

Any help would be great. Thanks.

I have had my 3000 N100 Thinkpad for around 2 years now and after a year and a half I realised the Battery was no longer charging, soon after this happened my Laptop would just die randomly, when I say die I mean there is no shutdown screen it is as iff all power to the p.c. suddenly stopped. At first I though it must be a Virus but after numerous scans and re-installing Windows the problem re-occured, Today I opened the P.C. and checked the fan as I thought maybe it was over heating and eventually giving in, I was relieved to see a load of dust and used the vacumn to clear the fan.I thought that would fix the problem but now if anything it seems worse, I know the battery is dead as the charge level is 0 and the battery indicator on the front of the laptop flashes 5 times organge before disappears completely...In a Final attempt I have disconnected the battery completely and am now running it only on the power adapter, I don't know if this will work but I need to do something...What could cause a problem like this, all of my settings are correct my power settings are set to always on with no hibernation.Any help will be wonderful. Thanks

Maybe the battery just went bad. The only way I can think of to test it would be to try the battery in another Lenovo 3000 or to try a new battery in your Lenovo 3000.

I have a Dell Dimension 8300 that's about 6 years old and recently I have been experiencing a problem where my internet connection will randomly disconnect. It almost always can be brought back by unplugging and reconnecting the ethernet cable in the back of my computer, or by unplugging it from the wall and reconnecting it. (Since my computer is on the second floor and the router and the modem are on the 1st floor, we run the cable from the router through the wall and to the 2nd floor). It also can be resolved by resetting the modem and router.

Anyway, I have had this problem a few times before, but they seemed to just go away, but it has resurfaced once again. Does anybody have any ideas of what the problem could be?

Thanks in advance!

I truly hope I can explain this problem and get it resolved. I want to use this as a web server for when I am away from home.

I have a:
Dell Optiplex running win xp pro, sp 3.
intel P4 processor with
it's connected with ethernet
to a motorola SB 900 cable modem for
Brighthouse Networks ISP.
I am running DYNDNS updater too, to resolve my dynamic ip to a url.

The problem is that every so often I need to manually obtain an ip address by using the repair button in the Local Area Connection Status window. However, I am able to do the repair remotely, so the nic is working. There doesn't seem to be any event that causes the connection to drop either so I am at a loss.

I sure hope someone knows what is going on and how I can fix this. A web server is kind of worthless if it drops connection. I'm not sure I'll be able to remotely connect if I'm not on the LAN.

Thanks a lot in advance :)

Despite my wireless adapter still being lit up, my connection to the internet randomly stops after a period of time and only a reboot can bring it back. After a random period of time, internet access to my computer ceases and only a reboot can bring it back; it states "limited access" and I have no connection. All my drivers are fully updated and I have already tried flushing DNS. If I try to restart or shut down using the start menu when this happens, a BSOD occurs stating driver power state failure. When I used driver verifier, it says A device driver attempting to corrupt the system has been caught and creates a BSOD. After the internet cuts off, I can no longer access network and sharing center (attempting causes explorer.exe to stop working). Bluescreen view states that ntoskrnl.exe are the cause of the power state failures. No problem arises when I use safe mode with networking. My computer specs are:

My Wireless Adapter:Belkin F5D8053 N Wireless USB Adapter #9.

I have no spare wireless adapters. I have not tried and cannot easily try a direct hookup from my router to my PC. I have already tried moving my adapter to a different port.

So I've had this problem for a while now, and it's starting to get more frusturating. I've tried googling a solution, but with no luck so far. Basically the problem is that I randomly lose internet connection. This is fixed by unplugging the cable from the wireless router to the LAN/TV/phone router, and plugging it back in right after. This happens every 2 hours or so, and it's pretty anyone that I have to replug the cable everytime. And this seems to be a problem with our whole wireless network, every other device in the house also loses connection until i replug the cable.

I've also noticed that it's only websites which get blocked, not the whole internet connection. Most of the time i'm playing online video games, and I don't get disconnected from them, which I find weird.

I also found something weird in the log files from the d-link webpage, I don't know if it has any relevance at all, but i'll post it anyways:

This problem just started today. I downloaded two programs today: Xchat and Hamachi. Some time after downloading and installing my internet connection would randomly reset. It will shut off for a few seconds, then reconnect. It's not a huge inconvenience for web browsing, but it's a disaster to try to use IRC or other auto refreshing programs, like games. I have since uninstalled both programs, and I have still had it happen a couple of times. My computer is a Dell Dimension E520 with Windows XP and my router is a Linksys WRT55AG version 2. Also, I forwarded a port from my router page for hamachi. I haven't changed that yet, and if it's not likely the problem, I'd like to not have to. I'll probably reinstall Hamachi soon. For the past few weeks I have been having a problem where my wifi randomly cuts out and the only solution is to log off and log on or restart the computer. It used to be not a problem but recently it will cut out 5/6 times a day. There are no signs or warnings but anything I am doing requiring internet access just loses connection. I have tried changing power options for my network adapter in Device Manager but no luck.

Any suggestions?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help.

I'm running XP Pro SP2 on my PC and from time to time while the PC is not being used the internet connection drops and I have to reboot to get it up and running again.

I've got the latest virus (norton) definitions installed and have ran several checks. I've also ran for spyware too and nothing seems to come up.

My speakers were on the other day when it happened and I heard the computer beep (like when you plug in a removable storage device) and then beep again, it seems to be after this beeping that the connection drops.

Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this, or if there is a event logger I can look at to see if anything is registered when the beep occurs.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Internet Connection Randomly dropping

I have a similar problem for which I have been searching for a solution. In fact I got to this forum in the course of my search.
I have a network with Windows 2000 server and 3 Win Xp pcs connected to it. The network is on a switch. It is connected to a Linksys wireless router, which in turn is connected to a DSL modem. The switch was installed to prevent disruption of the internal network, when Internet drops, which was happening before.

In the middle of a Remote Desktop access or VPN access over the internet to this network, the Internet connection gets disrupted. The connection to the Internet can be reestablished by resetting the Linksys router, by turning the power off and then turning it on.

Similar incident also happens randomly in the middle of being on the Internet from a networked PC.
Once again resetting the router takes care of the problem.

There is probably an explanation for this type of issue. I am still searching.

Perhaps you can also try resetting the router rather than rebooting the computer.

My internet connection randomly stops working even though the speed and signal strength are shown as 72.0Mbps and Excellent. This affects all the computers that are connected to the network and lasts for a few minutes. It happens every couple hours or so. Web browsing also randomly slows down so that it takes more than 30 seconds do load a page or does not load the page at all (This doesn't affect online games, only web browsing). Overall, web browsing is a pain. My ISP is Optimum Online. I tried tracing the route to and the 4th hop would always time out, I'm wondering if this could be a problem?

When you say online gaming, what kind of gaming do you mean? Multi-player RPG with video and sound, gambling, single-player shooters, all types, etc?

Have you checked the network to see if anyone has a program set to do an update every couple hours or so?

Have you checked into the possibility that someone is doing a download when the lags occur?

If you're the admin, have you looked at traffic from each computer to see if the lag is originating from within the network?

I'm not a network expert, but it certainly sounds possible that something is updating (such as an antivirus program) and has a setting not to disturb online gaming - but I'm just guessing.

I was just browsing as per usual, and all of a sudden my connection died. I have not had any problems with my ethernet cable before and everyone else in my house is still able to connect and browse. It's giving me the connection symbol with the yellow and black exclamation point. I am also being told that my IP is not configured correctly. This is just another one of those random BS errors. How can I get my connection back?

Answer:Internet connection died randomly

I know it isn't the router/modem because the rest of the people in my house are not having connection problems, but Windows, being the pain it is, only tells me to try reseting the router/modem (which I did ad it didn't help).

Hello, I was trying to browse the internet earlier, and I randomly just lost my internet connection. My homepage loaded up just fine, but then I tried to go to another site. It was taking a while to load. After about a minute a page finally came up that said "Server not found" (I use firefox). I can't get on any websites now and I can't get internet on any of my wireless devices either. When I right clicked my network icon on the toolbar and clicked on diagnose and repair it said "There may be a problem with the DNS. Windows attempted to find the well known host using dns. The server responded that the name was unknown." I have Windows Vista. Now I have no idea what I could have done. I didn't do anything out of the normal, just tried to go to a website that I frequently visit with no problems and this happened. This is what I get when I type ipconfig/all in cmd prompt. I am on a laptop not connected to the same network so I have to type this out. There may be some mistakes, but I'll try to make sure there aren't.

Right, this would be my first time using this forum, but as I'm really getting tired of this problem I thought I might as well ask to see if anyone knows anything.

So, the deal is that I just randomly lose internet connection and I can only reconnect by disconnecting my network cable and plugging it in again. Thing is, while I'm not connected to the internet when this happens I still have connection to the router.

I've thought that it could either be my network cable of possibly the network card, but as I never have internet problems when I'm on a Lan at friends that shouldn't be the case.
And so I eventally concluded it should be the router that's the problem, even though no other computer on the network suffers this problem, so recently changed the router from a D-link DI-604 to a D-link Dir-655, to no avail.

And so, having gotten a bit tired of having this problem for around a year now, I'm hope you might have some insight to what the problem might be.
Thank you in advance.

Answer:Randomly lose internet connection

So basically your wired to the router and the cable is securely connected and you keep dropping connections to the internet even with the same cable at a friends house? Try another dns server like google or something.

the last two days my machine has suffered a crash with similar symptoms. First, the display goes blank. I can see some disk activity. This continues for maybe 20-30 seconds and then the machine shuts down. Yesterday, I had to restart the machine twice b/c the first attempt also resulted in a shutdown during the boot process.I thought that perhaps it was an overheating issue, but I'm not convinced of that as today there was nothing obstructing the exhaust vents (though they were a bit dusty).I'm runing windows 7 pro, 64 bit. Have an NVidia card, but I don't know about the details. Where would I find them? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Thinkpad W510 Display randomly dies and then machine shuts down

If it is a W510, graphics are probably 1GB NVIDIA® Quadro® FX880M. It is hard to diagnose from a thousand miles away, but my first guess is overheating. I suggest installing TPFancontrol (free) and monitor temperatures.

I know there are many, many reasons for disconnections and before I start going through the huge list of things to try sent to me by my ISP, I thought I would explain what is happening in case anyone has come across a similar situation.

(I have checked the archives and found a few things to try.)

What is happening is that shortly after I have connected, 5-10 minutes, the line drops out. I re-connect, sometimes the same thing happens but 95% of the time the connection is fine the second time around.

My set idle time is 20 minutes and I use Stay Alive. Windows 98 Second Edition, modem Spirit Panther 56K which is only a few months old. I usually go straight to my email programme - Eudora - and the line drops out while I am reading mail. So I have changed to starting off with IE then going to Eudora but that doesn't seem to have made any difference.

This is happening just about every time I connect. There will be the odd day that I connect with no problesm, but not very often.

I would have thought that if I had a chronic noise on the line problem it would happen more frequently. The fact that this mainly (95% of the time) happens soon after I connect makes me think it might be a recognizable problem. I hope so.

hi there, first of all thanks for taking the time to help me out.
i have cable internet with shaw, and a recent problem i've had is that i can't keep my connection. my modem led lights are fine, the power, online, send, recieve lights stay solid and the pc activity blinks. the two computers in my taskbar are the ones that let me know when i have to reset the connection. the one on the left stays on, but the one on the right is blank. the first time had this problem was with my first network adapter, a yukon marvell gigabit ethernet controller. my local pc shop told me to that the card was probably bad, so i bought a d-link 530 t gigabit ethernet controller. for the first month it worked beautifully, i did not have to go to my network connection and disable/enable my card. but a couple weeks ago it started to do it again. i phoned my isp and they said that everything was fine on their side, and advised me to uninstall the card and reinstall which i did and it did not fix the problem. i ran command and did a ping test with and with for both of these, i got 4 packets sent and 4 recieved, 0 lost, when there was a connection. i did it again when it dropped it and the results were, 4 sent, 0 recieved, 4 lost. it also said request time out four times. as for yahoo, it said 'ping request could not find host www. please check the name and try again. also there are these extra adapter type things that i are a complete mystery to m... After may troubles with windows 10 I am now facing a WIFI problem. I have an atheros AR9285 and have the latest drivers installed (according to windows). The problem is that while I do have an internet connection, browsing the web results many times in a 'SERVER NOT FOUND' error. After refreshing the page a few times, the webpage will load normally.

Another problem is that after the computer comes back from sleep mode, the wifi connection has to build up again. Before it connects, about 20 seconds later, it will show a limited connection.

This only happens when on pure wireless. When I use the internet with a cable plugged in, I have no problems.

I've tried many fixes, but nothing helps. Anyone been able to fix this or know if there is a driver that will work ?

Thanks in advance ,

Ever since i've had my laptop it's always been randomly dropping connection and not connecting again until i reset the internet. It won't even connect even if i reset my laptop. It seems to be fine anywhere else i go but i don't use my laptop that much anywhere else. It usually says "no internet. secured." Usually i just go into wifi status then properties and change my channel width from auto to 20mhz only just because it will connect again and stay for a little. It usually doesn't bother me too much except when I game and i need connection to be stable. my driver is up to date and it's definitely my laptop because everything else can connect while my laptop can't

Hello, a couple of months ago my internet (Insight Broadband) began to randomly disconnect and reconnect, and recently it has become more frequent (every 5-10 minutes). I connect to my internet wirelessly through a linksys router. It's not my laptop because our desktop and xbox experience the same frequent disconnects and reconnects. I've tried the dns flush with no success. Ive also changed the wireless channel to 1 to prevent any interference. Also, our linksys router is about 4 years old, which could be the cause, but i'd like to elimate all other possibilities first. And finally, every time i click diagnose connection I receive the error " Your computer appears to be correctly configred, but the device or resource (DNS server) is not responding. And just recently our internet has become very slow (youtube videos taking longer to buffer with many pauses). EDIT: I eliminated the possibility of my router itself being at fault as when I plugged my xbox or laptop or desktop directly into the modem the same frequent disconnects and reconnects occured. Sorry to bother everyone but I need some help. For the past couple of months I have been randomly losing my internet connection, but not in the traditional sense. I can randomly browse the web, or play games, and what not then out of no-where my connection just drops. Scary thing is that the computer never recognizes that it's lost the connection. At first I checked a couple of help pages and found that routers lose their DHCP functions with age? So I replaced both my network card and router and am still having the same problems. Any ideas?

Recently my internet started disconnecting a ton during the day and I am really looking for a fix to this problem. When my internet starts disconnecting, it'll happen anywhere from every 2 minutes to every hour. The only ways I can get the internet to start working again after this happens are to go into Network Connections through the control panel and then right click Local Area Connection and press repair or by restarting the computer. After doing one of those 2 things, my computer will start disconnecting again soon after. I'm running Windows XP and have a Netgear WGT624 v3 router. However, I believe that my problem is not any type of hardware error because it only happens during the day and never happens to me at night at all. The computer is using a wired connection, but whenever the internet stops working on here, it will still work on all 3 of the other computers connected to the same router. I have also scanned the computer for viruses and spyware but have not found anything. This problem is really bugging me, so I'd be very happy if anybody could help me. If you need any additional information, feel free to ask.

Answer:Wired Internet Connection Disconnecting Randomly

What did you use scan the computer for pest? Also have you updated XP for patch release lately? How about the Netgear have you updated the firmware on it?

You can try to backup the router configuration to a file.
Then do a 90 second reset on it.
This would mean you keep on holding the reset button on the rear of the router with power cord attached while perform the following:

1. press and hold reset for 90 secs
2. during the first 30 secs you will unplug the power cord
3. during the second 30 secs you will plug-in back the power cord
4. during the third 30 secs at the end of that you would release and unplug the router for 15 seconds

Now try it again and see if the router works now..

Hi Everyone. Two days ago I finally upgraded my Dell Inspirion E1505 Windows XP SP3 to Windows 7 Ultimate (thanks mydigitallife) for the upgrading instructions. But now I'm having a major problem with Windows 7.

Everything runs great except for my DSL connection. Whether I have my comp connected directly to the DSL modem now or through my router, the internet connection drops randomly every 10 minutes or so sometimes (seems to happen whether I'm downloading a file, or just browsing webpages).

But all this morning I was able to use my comp just fine without any internet disconnections, which seems very strange.

I didn't have a problem with my internet disconnecting on me when I ran XP so I believe it might have something to do with how Windows 7 behaves with my comp's hardware. I upgraded to the latest network drivers for Broadcom 440x 10/100 v. to try to see if that would solve the problem, but no go.

Anyone have any advice on what could be the underlying issue? Thanks!

The problem is that my internet connection either randomly loses connection for about 5-10 seconds until it gets back online or disconnects all together. When it disconnects and it can't get back online on it's own, I have to pull the power plug and plug it back in. My sister in law and I are sharing internet since our houses are about 100 feet between each other. We are using one modem, and two routers. All we did was just plug the second router to the first router and it worked! We didn't configure anything in the router control panels, we basically just plugged and play. Since it's been kicking us off or resetting on us, I feel it might be something that we had to configure in the two routers. But I don't know what to configure. So if anyone knows a fix for this please help! Here is our setup.

Primary House — Modem — Belkin Router (we are wired and wireless) — 150ft cable (LAN'd on Belkin, WAN'd on Linksys) — Linksys Router (sister in law is wired and wireless) — Secondary House

I think this problem I'm having is quite common. When I'm using the internet, it seems to randomly disconnect, when I troubleshoot, it re-connects and gives me "the default gateway is not available". Yeah, this started happening on my laptop about two months ago. I'll be online and at random times for no reason at all the wireless internet connection will be lost so I click on the icon in the taskbar --> support --> repair and when it's done, the internet works fine, but I don't understand why it happens in the first place. It's really annoying.

Then just in the past day or two it started happening to my sister's laptop as well. Her laptop is exactly the same as mine: New since March, running XP. We've both scanned for viruses but found none.

Thanks for any help.

Answer:wireless internet connection cuts out randomly

is this is the same house on the same router ?

It could be a few things - other networks in the area can interfire with the signal and windows will see this stronger signal and try and log onto it.

do you have a cordless phone

signal strength

interfernace on channels - changing channel may help

DNS - its possible you are losing DNS - I had this problem on my D-Link router

router may benefit from a firmware update.

can you post make model of router and laptops

Free software to check signal strength of wireless is netstumbler 0.4.0 available for download from
download and install and run

can you post an IPCONFIG /ALL - for when it works normally and when it disconnects
TWO Methods to do that - some people have problems with ONE----

ONE ---------------------------------
ipconfig /all

rightclick in the box
select all
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

TWO -----------------------------------------------

Start, Run, CMD to open a DOS window and type:

Open C:\RESULT.TXT with Notepad and copy/paste the entire results here.
NEXT lets see if you can get out onto the internet with both names and IP's - its possible the IP number you get back on the first test is different to the one I post {I'm in UK} so use the number you get instead of mine

try ping the name and then the IP see below

At seemingly random times, the computer would simply lose connection. The taskbar will still say "Internet Connection". But all applications will stall on any network action. Chrome says no internet whatsoever. Only way of fixing it is restarting the computer. Happens almost twice a week.

Answer:Computer randomly losing internet connection

Are you connect wireless or wired?
Either way, I would unplug your router and modem, wait 30sec, plug in your modem.
Wait till its up and running (1min or so)
Next plug in your router. (give it a min or so)
Try again.
Still dropping, then more than likely you need to update your router. Go to your manufacture website, and download and install the new firmware. Make sure to backup your current router settings before you start this. Most manufactures have a guide to show you what to do.
If your router is owned by your ISP, then you might need a new one and should contact them for support. Ofter ISPs will change stuff and not tell anyone about it
hope that helps

My new laptop will randomly disconnect from the internet but still remain connected to my wireless network. I've unchecked the box allowing the wireless card to be powered down, I've done ipconfig release and renew, and I've checked my drivers but none of it has fixed the issue.

Answer:Laptop randomly losing Internet connection

Does this happen at all on other devices on the network?

Do you receive such issues with a wired connection?

Also when the internet disconnects does your router's internet light change colour or turn off? It is potential for this to be an issue with your line to the internet rather than an issue with your laptop

Many Thanks,

The problem I am facing is that the internet connection randomly goes extremely slow. These are my stats:

ISP: Mediacom
Internet Speed: 20MB

Router: Linksys E3200 High-Performance Simultaneous Dual-Band Wireless-N Router
Firmware: Ver.1.0.02 (Build 9) 09/28/2011
** I had updated the firmware the day I received the router. It had the older firmware.

I am not sure if I set up the router the right way, since I used the web-based advanced setup. I did not use the easy setup that came with the router.

In the settings I used DHCP Reservation to give fixed IP address to the computers, and I limited the amount of users to 18 on the network. For the Wireless network setup I am using both the 5GHz band and the 2.4GHz band. Where the 2.4GHz band is using the default Mixed mode. I have channel width at auto. I also have the guest mode enabled. I made Skype high priority on the QOS (Quality of Service) setting.

The users on the 5GHz band don't experience any issue, but sometimes have a slow connection to the internet. The users on the 2.4GHz band, which includes me, tend to always have a slow internet access. I noticed on my computer that the internet pages would load extremely slow, while at random times it would load a page immediately without any delay.

Since I share internet with my neighbors next door, they also connect their cellphones and iPods to the network to access internet. I am not sure if that could be an issue, but it's worth mentioning.

Hi there,

Thanks for all the info that you've provided quite helpful. The ipconfig/all output and Xirrus snip looks good.

Are there any other heavy data users in your household? Perhaps heavy gamers or video streamers? How about any small electronic devices (i.e. cell phones, stereo speakers, etc.) near your computer that might be causing interference?

Can you please post your Speedtest?
