I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Moved to college put together an old machine just so I have something when I'm at home (like now).
Its running win98 and the other machine on the network is XP pro. My main box (replaced) is also XP pro. DSl -> Router -> Parents box / My box

The router is 192.168.3.1, parents is static DHCP to 192.168.3.2
The 98 box is saying (ipconfig) its on 192.168.2.22 but I dont have anything on 192.168.2.x
When I tell it to /release_all and /renew_all it finds some REALLY wacky address (that I cant remember off the top of my head)

Any ideas? Does that big block of text make sense?

169.x.x.x - It's what MS boxes default to if they are trying to get a DHCP address but can't.

Have you tried giving the Win98 box a static IP of something like 192.168.3.[4-10] (any number not used).

Please forgive me for what is obviously going to be a duplicated post, but it doesn't seem that a similar situation would be easy to find in the search, so I'm going to have to annoy everyone and start a new thread... Anyway.

I've got a setup where my modem is connected to a router, which has a wired connection to the family computer and a wireless connection to my laptop. When using programs or similar that use a high amount of bandwidth (for example webcam on MSN Messenger, Skype, Online Gaming, etc.), my connection will often drop.

Now in my own mind, I've got a few problems that may cause this:

1) The ISP is being annoying and fluctuating the bandwidth available to me.
2) The router (being cheap) is actually doing a rubbish job and should be replaced.
3) The wireless setup is not holding the connection.

As far as I can tell, the family computer works just fine all the time, and since that is also connected to the router, (2) cannot be the problem. Since (1) is out of my hands (bar changing ISP, which is unlikely to happen due to restrictive parents), I bought a new LAN cable to try and setup a wired connection to my laptop to see if this made a difference.

I'm having trouble with this - and having spoken to a Certified Microsoft Technician (a friend), I've been led to believe that when the laptop is connected with the cable, it is failing to create an IP address (or something along those lines).

So I guess there are two parts to my requ... Read more

have two laptops - one running Vista and one running XP. Both have IE 7 and Norton 360 installed. I've verified the settings for IE and Norton are the same on both machines.

On my Vista machine, which is my main computer, I cannot access certain sites, specifically www.dilbert.com and www.advantiscu.org. They appear to be loading, but never load. I've tried with both IE 7 and Firefox, but I get the same result. In addition, the daily Dilbert cartoon that I subscribe too is received in Outlook but the graphics do not display. The graphics are not visible in my Yahoo webmail either.

However, on my XP machine, everything works just fine...no problems.

Like I said, I've verified settings on both machines...I've even done a restore to a previous restore point...no help. I've reset my router, disabled Norton, etc...everything I can think of and nothing has worked.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am trying to help a friend get her new Win-7 machine set up. I used the printer set-up wizard to install a networked printer in the new machine with absolutely no problem. Proved it would print from that machine.

Now, I get a call informing me that her old XP machine, which had been printing to the network printer with no problems, will no longer print. Documents go into the print queue, but they don't get printed. No error messages show up. I did some messing around via remote access, and finally removed the printer with the intention of reinstalling it. Scanning for network printers turned up several redundant instances of the same printer with different names. Some are identified as "invalid" some a "access denied". Bottom line. I can't get any of the selections to install.

On the Win-7 machine I did find a window that indicated that the printer is designated as being shared, but I didn't explicitly set it for sharing when I installed it. Also, I somehow got to a window that told me that for printers that were to be shared with other versions of windows I could optionally install drivers to support such machines. Didn't have the driver disk handy and took the window down. Now I can't even find it again.

I need some help in sorting this all out. Part of the problem is that out there in "network land" there are redundant remnants of previous installations that are being remembered inappropriately. I'd really li... Read more

I have a new Gateway Vista 64 machine for my office . The old HP Pavillion Pentium 4 with XP 32(?)is networked in other room Here's my setup:
Ethernet network with a new wireless Netgear router (yes,it has places to plug in the ethernet cords).
-HP Laserjet 1200 printer is plugged directly into the Vista 64 machine.
The XP Unit is on the network.
I can see and share files between the machines just fine but I get an error when choosing the networked printer in "add printer" when setting up XP unit.
(Print sharing is turned on on Vista Machine).
I choose the networked printer found on Gateway, it says that it will install drivers onto my machine to make things work, I click ok and it says that server for my printer has the wrong driver installed, would I like to find right driver? Clk yes. It looks for a VSFILE\XP but can't find it. It tells me to manually find the file but I can't find that file on HP site or any of my discs. I've uninstalled and reinstalled original drivers onto the XP machine (PCL6) and downloaded a Universal PCL5 printer file. None correct the problem. Vista automatically loaded the printer drivers when I turned on the power. It has a PCL5 file. The 1200 printer works fine when printing from Gateway machine. Vista will only let me use the drivers already installed in the machine. When I try to manually try to install drivers downloaded from HP for an XP on the the vista then it balks and says they were not created for an X6... Read more

I ended up hiring someone to solve this mess. He just created local ports on each machine that directs the pre-downloaded, local driver, to the printers. Worked just fine. Start, Run, //"name of network" to see if printers can be seen on the network 1st.

Instead of building a box I decided to purchase a Gateway Pc from BB with Vista preinstalled. At around the same time I also purchased a laptop with Vista preinstalled & both were purchased around two months after Vista came out. My first impression of Vista was that it was a nice looking OS just like everybody else but then the problems started shortly after. The PC was for my daughtes so I figure I'd set them up so they don't have to worry about tnything. I have a XP box which I use for myself and everyday they have issues with their pc. If it's not the UAC which I disabled and keeps coming back it's the file transfer & file delete issue which I heard you have to contact Microsoft for. Those issues will hopefully be worked out in SP1 release tomorrow.

My biggest gripe is that I've been burning dvd's for years for myself and I still use my XP box to do all of the work. When I turned to this new operating system I discovered some things. I'm not a cheap guy but 95% of my stuff is freeware so even when I installed the dvd burning software on my Vista pc's I got that famous message "Windows Vista has known compatibilty issues with this software" so I installed it anyway. They worked for a while but I started developing so many problems that I decided not to use my Vista pc's for burning Dvd's. It's not just the dvd software it's more software that won't work with Vista and when I go online to up... Read more

Answer:Store bought machine = Vista trouble

Sorry to hear about your problems. I personally have three Vista 32bit machines, two desktops and one tablet pc and they've been running for nearly a year 24x7 with few issues.

You weren’t very specific about what DVD burning software you use. I use Nero 8 and I burn CD’s and DVD’s all the time on all three of my machines with Nero 8 with no problems. I also burn shows recorded with Media Center to video DVD now and then with no problems. I rip and burn commercial DVD’s with 1 Click DVD all the time (for backup and archival purposes only) again with no problems.

There is a free burning package out there call Infra Recorder: http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/. I’ve installed on Vista machines I’ve setup for friends and family who didn’t want to spend money on burning software and it seems to get the job done pretty well.

Why don't you post a list of software you're having problems with. More than likely the people here will have free fixes or alternatives.

It would appear the 0x0000124 is related to the PCI Express Bus, ie Graphics card Driver or Chipset Software, possibly BIOS conflict. Therefore I would update drivers:a) Chipset Softwareb) PCIe Graphics Card Driver if you have a Graphics Card

I have basically two questions.
1) does anyone know if Aloha Bob's PC Relocator Ultra can work with Vista?

2) Is anyone aware of anyproducts, preferably shareware or freeware that can migrate both data/settings and programs from Win98 to Vista Home Premium?

Thanks

Answer:Moving from a Win98 machine to a Vista Machine

I don't imagine there are any software apps with that feature - any of them new enough to work with Vista would likely not bother with Win98. Data won't be hard to migrate, but I don't imagine Win98 programs would work the same on Vista... You will probably have to reinstall the programs - if they are compatible. (My CD burning software, for example, was compatible with XP but caused the PC to not boot when I tried to install it on Vista) Settings are probably going to be a lot different on Vista vs. Win98...

Hi,
I've checked here and on a couple of other places; many people seem to have similar problems but not similar enough that I've been able to solve it.

I have a HOME workgroup on my Vista machine that is connected to the printer I want to share. I have made HOME the workgroup on my W7 laptop. The Vista machine is able to access folders on the W7 and the W7 "sees" the Vista machine... the network map on W7 shows a "dotted" line from W7 - Vista but when I try to connect from W7 to Vista it will not accept a logon. I have tried using my normal Vista machine User Name and password and even tried creating a new one just for this connection but Windows Security always says "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password".

One of the other sites suggested that Client for Microsoft Networks needed to be installed on the W7 laptop but when I checked the properties for the W7 NIC there was no Install option... does W7 need Client for Microsoft Networks?

All settings on the Vista Sharing and Discovery are on.

TIA

Answer:Windows 7 machine cannot connect to Vista machine

I finally figured out that it was Vista machine firewall (AT&T Internet Security Suite by MacAfee) that was blocking the W7 machine from accessing the Vista machine.

After I checked the box in Port and System Services to allow RDP access, I was able to access both the Vista computer and its attached printer from the W7 machine.

Any advice on how to do this? I have file sharing enabled on both computers. When I view computers and devices from my vista machine, I see my XP machine, but it is showing up as a media device. When I click on it, windows media player opens. It doesn't seem like it should do this since I am sharing more than just media files. In windows media player i get the error, "Before you can access files in this library, you first must have access to this library".

Purchased Vista laptop and can access internet, However, I can't connect to other XP computers in home network. I'm ready to throw out Vista!!!!

I have uninstalled all AVG and Spyware Terminator on both machines.
I have disabled Windows Firewall on both machines.
Have computers in same Workgroup.
Installed LLTD so I can see the XP machine in Vista's network map.
Set up as Private Network.
From Vista machine, I was able to ping IP address to XP machine, but was not able to ping name of XP machine.
From XP machine, I was able to ping IP address to Vista machine, but was not able to ping name of Vista machine.
From reading many posts, appears to be a firewall problem but I can't figure out where it is coming from.

Thanks for any help that you can provide.

I have a Dell XPS Studio w/ Vista Home Premium w/ 12g of Ram i7 proc. In the last week I have been having a really disturbing problem with my network connection. By the way I have auto updates turned off and I have SP2 installed. Actually SP2 solved the problem to an extent. In the system tray the icon for network was healthy for two weeks into my new purchase. I had shut down the pc because I was to be a way for a day or two. I come back, the network icon has the big red x on it, however, I am able to connect to the internet. I was not able to explore my network, go to "my computer", control panel or anythingthat would help me determine what the problem was while it was happening. Over the passage of time, 1-2 hours, the network icon corrected itself and was showing the nice blue circle on it. I have now determined that every time I restart my machine I have this problem, and with no network access to shared drives or printers you might understand the frustration. I was experiencing the Black Screen of Death before SP2 was installed. Remember this machine is less than three weeks old. I am not a newbie to window and the problems...making me want to drink some Mac koolaide!

I have my first windows 7 computer on my home network, and it appears to me I have outgoing networking, but not incoming. On the Windows 7 computer, I can get to the router and the Internet, and can access shared folders on Vista machines on the home network. The computer name "advertising protocol" works as the name of the Windows 7 computer in the "Network" user interface on the Vista machines (the user interface accessed from Network and Sharing Center by 'view computers and devices"), but attempting to access it gets a "cannot access" error, and attmepting to diagnose gets a "cannot find" error. For whatever it is worth, highlighting the icon in the "network" user interface does not show anything for "location".

I am going through this to get shared folders on the Windows 7 computer visible on other computers on the network. Obviously this is not working. Just to recap the configuration:
1) all computers on the network are members of same Workgroup
2) My documents on the Windows 7 computer are shared read-write with everyone
3) advance sharing options show:
Network discovery ON
File and print sharing ON
Public folder sharing ON
128 bit encryption
Password protected sharing OFF
IPv6 disabled
Homegroup stuff either OFF or ON and managed by Windows (but this is irrelevant)
4) firewall off

Answer:Cannot ping W7 machine from any vista machine

Why is IPv6 disabled? You do realize that IPv6 is only used on the LAN and is needed for Homegroups to work correctly. Maybe you were just thrown off by the first picture below which is only telling you that IPv6 is not connected to the WAN because it's not supposed to be.

The second picture shows it as enabled for the LAN.
It doesn't matter much either way unless you are Homegroup, but Homegroup only works with Windows 7 computers. For Vista and Win 7 you need to use either workgroup or public file sharing. You also need to enable file sharing on the Vista machine.

You should not need to turn the firewall off.

Are you sure that you are sharing the correct group. There is a seperate public file sharing settings page but the workgroup and homegroup use the same settings page.

Maybe you were thrown off because there are two settings pages. The third picture is the Homegroup and Workgroup settings page and the fourth one is for the Public file sharing.

I have a home network setup with 2 vista machines and one XP notebook. On each of the vista machines, after sharing a specific HDD one HDD of the share can not be accessed.
On my G/F Machine she can not access my D: HDD which is just a media drive. On my machine I can not access the same. It tells both of us we do not have permissions.

The funny thing is, we can both access the 2 other HDD. Its only these particular HDD on each of our systems that one another can not access. All HDD of course are setup the same using the advanced sharing option in the HDD properties from 'Computer'.

Ive have even attempted to setup user accounts on each of the machines, enabled password sharing and use those accounts instead of the everyone permission.

I have no clue what about these HDD are different from all our others, Im stumped. Maybe some of you advanced networking gurus can help me.

I have a p2p network with one Win98V1 machine, two Win98V2 machines, a win 2k macnine, and a new winXP one.

One Win98V2 machine supplies Internet Connection Services, and this machine can't see the name of the XP machine in network neighbourhood. The XP machine can see the ICS machine's name, but gives a path not found error if I click on it.

ICS works even to the XP machine, and all computers can ping all others.

If I find the IP address of the XP machine and put that in an LMHOSTS file on the ICS machine, then I can map the XP shares, but the ICS machine still doesn't see the XP machine in network neighbourhood.

Fixed IP addresses break ICS, but don't fix the problem.

Uninstalling ICS didn't help - and of course I had to edit the registry to reinstall it.

What else can I try to make it work?

I have spend the last 10 stupid days, all of which were stupid, trying to analyze what happened.
I thought it was a corrupted windows file. As it turns out, and I have examined my boot log file which I created, this file is a new virus, hxxp://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_157111.htm

Answer:Machine will not boot- black screen with which mouse- PCIDump.sys virus has clobbered my machine..

Questions:
1. What version of Windows are you using?
2. What anti virus are you using? I see you mention McAfee but only in that they detected it (unless you're saying that YOUR McAfee scanner found it).
3. Have you tried booting into safe mode?
4. If its a virus, you know you were infected. Is there a way for you to scan that drive for spyware? (either hook it up in another computer, hook it up as an external drive to another computer, or create a boot disk with spyware scanning on it such as UBCD)

Ok,
Last night I just got my brand new Athlon XP 1500. Anway It's running WindowsXP. I have been trying all morning to connect it to my old laptop (running Windows 98) using Direct Cable Connection. The AthlonXP is the Host and the Laptop is the Guest. I can get both computers connected fine, BUT when I try to get the Laptop to view the AthlonXPs files it asks me for the name of the AthlonXP as well as a password. I type in the name of the PC (there is no password). I try clicking ok, but it tells me the passoword is incorrect. There is no passwords setup on the AthlonXP at all! Please help. Thanks.

G'day all! (first post here!! :P)

Ok..so this is my situation:

I have a server...and i have installed a printer to it - the Canon LBP 3200 - the server is a 32bit machine running win7 pro...anyways...this printer does not have ANY 64bit drivers (which my main machine runs win7 ulti x64) so i am unable to install the printer on my main machine...

I was wondering, is there a way to share it from the server to the 64bit machine without installing any drivers?

Or is there a way to install 32bit drivers on a 64bit Machine?

Or can anyone find any 64 bit drivers/custom 64bit drivers?

:S

Thanx all!!

Answer:Sharing a printer from 32bit machine to 64bit machine without drivers.

ok so i tried this method: Go to Control Panel. Choose printer. Then choose Add Printer.

Choose Add a local printer. Click on Create a new port. The default in the drop down box is Local Port. Do not change that. Click Next.

A dialogue box will appear asking for you to enter a port name. Type in the \\computer name\printer name ie. My computer's name is basement and the printer name is EpsonSty so I typed in \\basement\epsonsty

But when i make my own port name it says access is denied... :S

any help?

I recently got a 1.8GHz Celeron computer from a family member who bought a new computer, but they dropped it while bringing it over. When I started it up, it booted up pretty quickly. But when I'm actually in Windows, it runs as slowly as my old 1GHz machine and sometimes when opening things it has long delays. I thought it might just be Windows being old, so I did a clean install. But that didn't fix it. Now I think it might be one of the hard drives or my cd drives, since at the BIOS diagnostic screen it sometimes hangs at them. Other than scandisk, which didn't return anything, is there a way to find out where the bottleneck is occuring without having to spend money I don't have?

Well, it depends on which OS you have. If it's Vista or XP, then you may want to change the graphics settings so they're lower, because they consume memory.

My problem seems to be the opposite of most people's - I added a Windows 7 laptop to my previously all-XP network without any trouble, simply enrolling the new machine in the existing Workgroup, and everything works fine.

Except for just one snag: from my XP machine I can see every single file on the Windows 7 machine, which raises privacy issues even within a family!

How do I stop this happening, and revert back to the situation I had before, where machines on the network could only see each other's shared folders?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Answer:How do I stop my XP machine seeing every file on networked Windows 7 machine?

Well, a rough and dirty security fix would be to make sure that "Password Protected Sharing" in the Network and Sharing Center is set to "On." That way the files will be safe but still visible.

Are you logging into w7 with a password?

Create an account below Administrator level with a password and use that.

Theoretically w7 should not allow a drive to be shared, so check all the folders that show the "Share" symbol and set the Share to "Not Shared".

We need some extra info to help you:

-what VM is it (x86 or x64 and the OS)
-are you using graphic acceleration or not
-do you use VT-x

Maybe we should start a new thread since this one is fixed.

My VM is Windows 8 Consumer Preview x86

Answer:VM Machine Trouble

Thanks for the info

VT-x improves virtualisation support for intel processors (check for "VT-x" or "Vanderpool" or "HAV" technology or something similar in the BIOS)
x86 virtualization - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's just used by Vbox and seen in the acceleration tab.

I think your system (as seen in yous specs here on site) has VT-x

But VT-x is not really required.

It will make your VM work faster, that's all.

So the real problem is the graphic acceleration. Virtualbox installs the VDDM driver for 3D support by default in the latest versions and it's a buggy driver and still in developpment. The screen flickering it's normal (i'm serious). They still fix crashes for the aero interface but with the latest version (Vbox 4.1.16) the glitches got worse.

If 3D is enabled, Vbox installs VDDM driver by default.

It will work after some change of settings but the 3D gaming and acceleration is still unstable and metro apps can crash, but there is basic support and you can mount shared folders and auto-resize the screen.

Install the latest Virtualbox (now 4.1.16) from https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
and the extension pack (for usb 2.0)...
If you already use the latest version:

Go (in the Win 8 VM) to System -> Advanced system settings -> Settings -> Adjust for best performance
You can the enable some features like this:

It' s better than the standard settings with animations (standard settings will work bad on Vbox =&... Read more

Hello all,

I just built a new machine.

I have a crossfire ready ASUS mother board.
ATI Radeon x1800 PCI-E
AMD Athlon 64 3800+
2GB Ram PC3200
Windows XP Home SP2

Heres the problem. After installing windows, I tried to update windows and had problems when installing the updates, alot of fails, I had to retry the update several times before it would take. Also I installed other programs very slowly. I think there may be a "write to the HDD" problem. Everything installs so slow. Even programs downloaded from internet. I think most of my drivers for just about everything hardware on this pc are generic windows drivers with exception to the motherboard items. Could there be a problem communicating with my HDD? I have SATA hardrive. It is plugged in the 1st SATA port. Windows loads ok. Also I get alot of random restarts that are no way connected to a heat issue, the serious error that recovers says it is an unknown driver error. Please Help.

Thanks RDGM

Okay, so I'm trying to format this computer that has WindowsXP installed. I tried a normal boot disk so that I could get to a command prompt, but it kept saying that C: wasn't a valid drive. So I downloaded some "Ultimate Boot Disk" program from this site and tried using it, but every time I boot with it it says to remove all disks and press a key. It won't do anything with that disk in the A: drive.

I tried reinstalling windows with a full install, but it just overwrote the sysytem files and didn't actually format the drive, which is what I need to do.

So, how the heck do you go about formating a machine with WindowsXP installed on it??

Answer:Trouble Formating XP Machine

I want to format and do a clean install of an "xp sp1 upgrade disc" on pc with an oem version of xp sp3. I installed VMware Workstation and got the virtual computer running (installed Windows XP Home). I can switch in and out of the window (between VM and my actual computer) normally, however I am trying to run a game on the VM and a game on my normal computer.. When I have the game on my normal computer up it seems to lock the VM where it won't let me reach it again (although it shows the screen - it just looks frozen). I just want to be able to switch out between them, or leave the two games running for the night.

Any ideas on what would be causing this freezing? I don't think its a lack of power because I allotted it 1,200 MB of memory, and gave it 2 processors.

My comp is 2.33Ghz quad core w/ 4 GB DDR3 ram so yeah..

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Answer:Trouble with a virtual machine

Also I'm running into issues running the game in the VM too.. Its saying:

"Warning: Nothing will be rendered.
The reference rendering device was selected, but your computer only has reduced-functionality reference device installed. Install the DirectX SDK to get the full reference device."

I installed DirectX, and thought maybe it had something to do with the virtual computer not noticing my graphics card.. but it supplies its own: "VMware SVGA II." I tried downloading the NVIDIA drivers for my gfx card but it wouldn't recognize anything other than the default VM one. (Or at least I don't know how to force it to show, or even know if you can make the VM recognize it in the first place)

Hi,
I built a great computer! ( or so I thought ). I bought

Intel P4 2.8E 1MB cache
ABit IS7 MB
1 Gig Kingston Valueram(2x512)
Maxtor 60GB HDD ( transfer from old system )
WD 160GB HDD
Geforce fx 5200 128MB
Emperex DVD +/-
52X Cdrom
400W Power Supply

I ordered from newegg, and well I have had problems since I bought it. Abit's temp monitor says the processor is running at 70 Cel. I bought an Aerocool all copper heatsink, which replaced the replacement heatsink Intel sent me. Now my bios is losing hard drives. I shutdown most nights because of the heat issue. When I booted, I had no hard drives. then a reboot and reset of the bios brought them back. That stopped working yesterday. I now can see my WD, but the maxtor refuses to come up. I Had opened the case to reapply arctic silver ( thought maybe i had put too much on the cpu ). I am at wits end. Thanks for any help.

Answer:Help Please!! Dream Machine in trouble

To add to that make sure the heatsink is on THE RIGHT WAY. I was having heat issues with this machine and i thought i had the HS on the right way up, because it seemed logical for the clip to be where it was. But when i checked it was actually upsidedown!

As for the HD issue, try a different IDE cable and see if you have the same problem. Im guessing youre using them both on the same cable. could be a dodgey connector or cable.

Hi:

Hopefully someone here can help me with my problem. I purchased an E-machine for my boyfriend last year (will have to go home and check model). The problem we are having is that when we 1st turn on the computer it makes a humming noise as if only the fans were working but i am not able to see the screen turn on (just is completely black). I am able to turn off the computer by pressing the power button until the computer is completely off because if I just press it once it wont shut down. Also, if I give it a few minutes and try to turn back on..the computer works and I am able to use it as I normally would. I am sure this is not good for the computer to turn on then off then on again because obviously there is a problem. Hoepfully someone can help me.

Thank you in Advance,

Answer:Help! E-Machine Boot up trouble

It could be a couple of different things, but it's most likely the power supply. EMachines are notorious for using :crap power supplies. I'd get it checked out/replaced before it does any more damage like burn up your mother board. Any local independent PC store should be able to check it out and replace the power supply with a decent new one for under $60-$80 including parts and labor.... there's a good chance that it will be less than that.... I see Emachine power supplies fail ALL the time and do all sorts of weird things so I'm pretty sure that's your problem.

Hi.

I have a network problem. My windows 7 machine is not detecting win xp machine whereas win xp machine is detecting win 7 machine.
They are in the same workgroup named Home. And the networking system is set to work. I have left the homegroup I was previously in. I enabled file sharing for devices that use 40 bit and 50 bit encryption.
On XP I have enabled NetBios over TCP/IP.
File sharing is enabled on both computers.
I think it's something obvious as both instalations on different computers are really fresh and both windows haven't been tampered with.

Thank you for your assistance.

I,m new to this development and deployment and am running into a strange problem. I developed an ACCESS db on a laptop. Everything seems ok, it works. I used the Package Wizard and created an installation package. When I installed it on another machine I am now getting errors in the deployment machine that I do not get in the development machine. I seems to be coding issues. Can't load data into field for example.

Why would I get these on the deployment machine and not the development machine? Am I unaware of some way to test the code in the deployment machine? Otherwise how do I solve the problem if I can't deplicate the error in the development machine where I can stop the code and see the problem. I feel like I am missing some trick or secret.

Thanks

Answer:Errors in deployment machine not in development machine

Once it is deployed you need to run the connection command on the client to connect to the back end database. Are you using SQL server or all Access for the back end?

Here's a strange issue--at least I think it's strange. I have an old application that I've had since I had Win XP. I'm not sure but I think I had it even on Win 98. Even though it's an old app I was able to install and run in on Vista and Windows 7. I now have the pre-release Win 8 installed on VMware Player and I was wondering if it would run in Win 8. So I opened Win 8 and put in the CD, clicked on the setup.exe file and it installed--or so it seemed. It always installed a short cut on my desk top before. So I looked and didn't see it. It was supposed to have installed in a particular folder, but I couldn't find it. I then installed it again and chose to put a short cut on the desk top. But, it wasn't there. The bottom line is that even though I had Win 8 open in the guest, I discovered that it actually instaledl on Win 7--on the host machine even though I installed it while the guest machine was open. Has anyone seen anything like that before? I suppose it happened because it was such an old app.

Answer:App installed on host machine while in guest machine

When you put the cd into your drive, it fired the autoplay on your host machine and not within your Windows 8 VM. It installed on your Windows 7 host machine. If you had been in the VM, and launched the setup from within the VM, it would not have installed on your host machine. PERIOD.

My brother just built a Windows 7 machine, and we are trying to connect it to his old Windows XP Pro machine via crossover cable to transfer over his files, but nothing I have tried has worked. I have them both in the same workgroup, I have followed all the guides I have been able to find online, and I still can't get the machines to recognize one another. What do I need to do? If someone could give me a walkthrough, I'd really appreciate it. This is my first time using Windows 7, so I'm not familiar with anything.

I am building a new office machine which I would like to stick windows 7 onto. I also have an old Dell which came with windows XP on it. Can I use the XP key from that in order to use the windows 7 upgrade version?

Answer:Upgrade from old Dell XP machine to new Windows 7 Machine

You cannot use the key with the upgrade. You have to actually allow 7 to see the XP installation first. Then you do a custom install (clean). Just finally upgraded myself.
There are soem other work arounds for this. Just google it.

Situation: Win 8 Lenovo laptop is borked - necessitating reinstalling the OS - decided to ditch Win 8 (hatedit) to go with something that works, i.e. Win 7 Pro. The laptop uses UEFI.

Steps, as I understand them: please correct any errors.

Having removed laptop HDD and confirmed it is working and wiped it using my desktop, reinstalled.

Connect USB media into Desktop and format it for FAT32,
Copy Win 7 Pro 64 disk onto USB
Insert USB into laptop, boot and install from USB

Anything I am missing?

Answer:Installing Win 7 Pro onto a UEFI Machine (formerly Win 8 machine) - Check me, pls.

Download the Windows USB tool here.

This will load the iso of win7 to a usb pen and make it bootable for the installation.

Hey all, I just got an awesomely unexpected birthday present of a new emachine T2862 that has XP on it, saving me from having to scrape up the dough to replace my 5-year-old CompUSA Home Series refurb-p.o.s. Although I think I remember reading somewhere that emachines were not that good, but I believe it should at least be an improvement over the old one, being 5 times faster and with 5 times bigger hard drive! Expecially considering I'm just about broke financially.

I haven't even opened the box yet, I want to do my homework first on what I need to do... I want to transfer a lot of files from my old computer to the new one. From what I've been reading here, it seems like my best bet is to get some kind of transfer cable -- exactly what kind, where can I get one, and about what will it cost? I've never hooked up 2 computers to each other before, and I don't know what's involved... if it helps, this old thing is running Windows 98, and what I want to transfer is:

1) my music - mostly copied off of CDs and stored in windows media player playlists, I don't want to have to re-copy them b/c the reason I copied them to the computer is some of the CDs had been played so much they were getting warped/scratched etc, besides it's time-consuming - I know copying from one computer to the other doesn't save much time, but it would save me from having to keep sticking in the next CD, doing the copy, and then having to re-type in the library i... Hi,
I am having trouble connecting from an XP (Home) desktop machine to a Win 7 (Home Premium) laptop to share files.
I have read and followed a lot of posts to no avail.
specifically I have followed the advice in "How to make Windows 7 work with older Windows versions for networking and file sharing"

- both machines are in the same workgroup
- there is no trouble going from Win 7 to the XP box
- on win 7 the network is defined as a 'Work' network
- firewalls are disabled on both boxes
- Advanced Network settings
- Network discovery in ON
- File and Printer Sharing is ON
- Public folder sharing is ON
- password protected sharing is OFF
- Allow Windows to manage Homegroup connections
- the shared folder in Win 7 says its shared (its not in the public tree)
- On folder Advanced setting decurity, 'Everyone' has been added
- On folder Advanced setting sharing it says "People without a user account and password for this computer can access folders shared with everyone"

The XP box is using XP Home which can only use 'Simple File Sharing'.
On the XP box the win7 machine appears in the Network list under the workgroup.
If I click on the machine I get a login prompt!
Attempting to map a drive to the win7 box the same network is shown browsing to the win7 machine does not list any of the shares. (it also does not ask for a login)

Interestingly if I go back to the network and enter the userid / password then I can see the shares... Read more

Hi all, I need to do the following: I have a driver installed in one machine (Sdo Sensor V2 version 10.0.10240.16384, Microsoft) that I need to install in another machine. Is there a way to extract the driver from machine 1 and install it in machine 2? I know that there are 3rd party tools that do this, any recommendation? Thanks
P.D.:The reason I want to do this is that I can't find these drivers anywhere on the web, not even in Dell's Support site

I just finished a build on an XP Pro machine and periodically get disconntected from the domain. Everyone is connecting through a SpeedStream 5861 DSL Modem/Router and a hub connected to the modem via a X-over cable.

I'm using the DHCP server on the router for every machine except for the NT4 Server and a printer. I have those addresses set aside as static so the router doesn't hand them out. The XP machine is able to get an IP with no problem. Can surf the web with no issues as well.

The problem happens when I try to login to the domain from the XP machine. It's somehow unable to find the domain/PDC. It can't ping the PDC by name but can by IP. Once I run "nbtstat -A" against the PDC's IP address, it sort of refreshes and then I can ping the PDC by its name, connect to the domain, basically function normally. But a few minutes later I'll have to start the process all over again.

I tried manually setting the XP machine's DNS server to the IP of the DSL modem but had no luck with that. I was able to join the domain successfully and the machine shows up in Server Mangler as a WS.

EDIT: Almost forgot, I had Norton Internet Security running but disabled it thinking it'd help but no luck there either. The NIS may prove to be more trouble than it's worth and I'll get to learn scripting for the firewall in the router.

What else can I do??

Answer:Trouble connecting XP Pro machine to NT4 domain

I may have found the answer to my own problem. I found this article on the MS Knowledge Base:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q314366

I still can't ping the server from the workstation but the connections within XP haven't been dropped. Still waiting to claim victory on this for a little while.

My girlfriend has an e-machine model w4682. When I press the power button the power light around the power button turns on and stays on. The lights on the keyboard for the num lock, caps lock, scroll lock blink on and then turn off, then they flicker before turning completely off. Nothing else turns on (no fans, no monitor input and no laser mouse). Do you think its the power supply?

You need an adapter such as this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...cm_re=sata_ide_adapter-_-12-186-078-_-Product to convert IDE to SATA, or SATA to IDE.

If the hard drive you are moving has programs installed, they won't run on the HP computer unless they are standalone programs that don't rely on access to the Windows registry or DLLs and system files that aren't present on the HP.

I want to expand my storage by adding a 1TB drive. I have connected a Samsung 1TB drive to the motherboard (MSI Platinum P965) SATA port alongside the existing Seagate drive. Not only did the machine then error on start up, but when I then removed the drive and fired it up in its original set up to check it was still working, it now still fails to boot. It gets past the MSI screen (but doesn't react to my request to launch BIOS set up menu), and locks on the screen showing the Primary boot device. Can someone help?

Answer:[SOLVED] Trouble adding 1TB HDD to XP machine

Remove the new drive, make sure the SATA data & power cables are fully connected at the mobo and hard drive. Power on and keep tapping the key to get you into the BIOS setup. If you get into Setup, make sure the correct SATA drive is recognized and set as your primary boot device.

If you still can't get into setup, power off, remove the power cord, then hold the power button on the front of the case for 15 seconds. Reconnect power cables and try again. If still no luck, remove the CMOS battery on the mobo for 15 mins and try again.

I have a computer here (belongs to a friend) that has trouble booting up. It attempts to boot then crashes and sometimes starts checking the disks, (see attachment). If left on for a while it will stay on for longer each cycle and eventually when it gets warm it will run normally for sometimes a few hours but might crash occasionally at any activity but with no consistent pattern.
The cpu is a 1000 megahertz AMD Duron, temperature 50 c.
Current system temperature is 39 c.

I have unchecked "restart automatically" in my computer advanced properties with the hope of seeing a blue screen error notice. So far no result.

My experience level with the above type of problem on a scale of 1 - 10 would be about 2.

Any help appreciated.

Hi there, I recently built a whole new machine to use as my primary system - after much trial and error (oops forgot to plug the motherboard in) I finally have the machine booting, beeping and posting, but getting past that is something else.

To make data management easy on myself I figured I'd just pull the boot HD out of my old computer - complete with full install of Win XP (regular 32 bit edition). However, despite checking and re-checking my boot settings to ensure that the old drive is my primary HD, I can't seem to boot up windows on my new machine.

After post it will take me to the familiar screen asking me to choose how to boot windows (Safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with console, or normal), but after making my selection the computer will pause for a moment (with Normal mode it'll flash a blue screen really quick - though not the typical BSD - but not the typical BSD that we all know and love) and will then simply reboot.

If anyone knows how I can get this old drive with my previous install of winXP (and all my other files) to boot in my new machine, I'd really appreciate the help! I'd heard that XP can be a real bother when it comes to migration - is this what people are always talking about?

PS. My old computer's specs (the one that the HD was running in prior to being put in the new machine) are vastly different from the new machine's

I wonder if anyone else has tried rebooting a Windows 8 machine remotely yet. This is probably not a common occurrence yet, though it someday may be, and it turned out to be quite a debacle. Obviously we all know that in order to reboot a machine, we have to access the charms bar, go to settings and then power, then restart. This turned out to be almost impossible for me to accomplish remotely using ultravnc, as I could only see a small portion of the screen, and the charms kept vanishing from the screen while I was trying to get to settings. Is there another simple way to restart the machine that I am missing, that does not rely on mouse gestures, or 3rd party applications?

I have just bought a new Inspiron 15 5100 with running Ubuntu with the plan of installing Win 7 which I have a DVD for.
I found that my new machine has no DVD drive so I made a USB with the Win 7 .iso
I have wiped the hard drive, created new partition, fixed MBR and am getting to a point in the Win 7 installation process where it is asking me for missing device drivers. I have downloaded all drivers on Dell.com for my machine and put on another USB stick but I cannot browse to them during the installation process. So I don't even know if I have the required drivers or not.
Can anyone help please? I'm sure someone else has successfully installed Win 7 over an Ubuntu installation. If so please let me know if you had similar problems and how you got past them.
Please help if you have. Thank you.

Answer:Inspiron 15 5100 - I am having trouble instaling Win 7 on my new machine because of missing drivers.

It has nothing to do with Ubuntu being on there. Try putting the drivers on the SAME USB you are installing with, but 99% of the time the missing CD driver message is because of bad installation media. If you downloaded the Windows 7 ISO, I would start by download it again.

Heh, i know this didnt help you out to much, but i couldnt resist.

Knowing not jack about graphics, I would think that the better processor and vid card you can get, with lots of ram, you should be able to do pretty much anything. Games take computing power, as do graphics from my understanding, so i would think the higher end rig you can get, the better off you will be.

I have an orange crossover cable that I have connected to both machines and I set up sharing on both but the Windows XP machine doesn't show the 8.1 machine. I'm trying to pull some movies and music off my 8.1 laptop because I use my XP desktop as a media server of sorts.

I can't figure out how to get them to recognize each other and my connection just says "limited."

Can someone help?

Answer:How do I share files between 8.1 machine and XP machine

Just like you did in XP. Right click on the folder and in Sharing, choose to share. In Network Connections. Set security for 40/56. Turn off Home Group.
