I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: switching desktops, how to change dsl

Reinstall the sofware that your supplier gave you . Including your password and customer code as required. Simple enough ?)

by the way it took me a while to figure what 'tds' meant !

I have been working on a friend's PC -- an hp pavilion (a527x) that's running WinXP-SP2. I just spent days cleaning all the spyware off of it, & finally got an OK from Chaslang that it was clean! However, I'm getting ready to return it, & now when I log off from one user & click on the 2nd user to change desktops, the monitor just goes black with a flashing cursor for a few seconds. Cannot get anything else to come up on the monitor then, & haven't had any trouble with the monitor or any other hardware up to this point. I turned off "hibernate", etc...in "Power Options" in the Control Panel. Any ideas here as to the cause? PC is running fine otherwise. Although can't seem to get MyWayWebSearch spyware off of it. Have tried all help in "Anti-Spyware" page. Anyone had this happen before to them or anyone know a possible cause & solution? Thanks bunches, in advance! Shannon

Hi,

I have the following problem: switching virtual desktops to the right (CTRL+WIN+Right Arrow) doesn't work. On the other hand, when I go to e.g. desktop number 3 (using WIN+TAB and mouse) I can switch to the left using CTRL+WIN+Left Arrow without any difficulties...

I installed Windows Hotke Explorer to check, if CTRL+WIN+RIGHT has been taken, but it just stands "System (Move window)" in both cases.

Does anyone know, what could be the reason?

I'm not sure if this is unqiue to Yoga 2 Pro or Microsoft 10 in general, but before when I wanted to switch between desktops using the windows key + ctrl + arrow key shortcut, the desktop on the screen would literally slide over. Now when I attempt to switch between desktops, that animation no longer happens--instead, the desktop's features just shift to those of the desktop I'm switching to. It can get confusing, because it's not as visually explicit when the desktop has been switched. Is this just a result of a Windows 10 update, or is this situation unique to my laptop? Thanks in advance!

I know the obvious ways to do this, right click on desk top etc. I had a virus and after about a week I eventually uninstalled (NORTON, reinstalled and ran, got live updates, ran a stinger program (from McAfee) downloaded spybot. Anyway, my system seems clear, but now all users (except me) on my home pc have boring blue desktop & small icons. Can't change it.Any ideas for more thorough virus/trojan/etc searches, or how else to change desktop?(I know it is only minor thing - but system restore isn't playing either - this worries me!)Help?

Hi. Possibly in Windows XP when it was installed, in order to have several desktops, dealing with various subjects, I simply created a whole bunch of User Accounts. So, I changed user accounts to get to the desktop I wanted.

Now that I have Windows10, is there an advantage to using the New Desktop feature? I'd just have one user account then. Thanks.

Edit: I'm using Fences to sort my desktops.

Edit: Also, my data, which shows up in my desktops is stored on a separate partition from C drive.

Answer:Should I change my User Accounts to desktops?

Welcome to the forums Richard 2277. I would recommend you try it as it seems to do what you need it to. Should be quicker than logging off and on.

I keep 2 virtual desktops, one for my personal applications and the other for official work.
I have multiple windows of Google Chrome on both the desktops, some excel windows, PDF files etc.

Whenever my computer wakes from sleep, the entire arrangement gets messed up and I have to manually drag back the windows into their respective desktops.

This is a very annoying issue. Any way to solve this?

Hi, I have a problem with W10 virtual desktops.

I'll explain it step by step :

Go to virtual desktop 1
Open full windowed Chrome
Go to virtual desktop 2
Open two different full windowed excels
Hit windows-tab

And you end up in this mess i'm attaching as a screenshot.

If you click on destktop 3 icon, you'll be there, but excel will be shown, full windowed, as if you were on desktop 2.
If you then minimize it, it goes to the desktop 2 taskbar.
If you click on desktop 1 icon, you'll get there, but excels will be shown instead of Chrome. If you put the mouse over desktop 1 icon and then click Chrome above virtual desktops, you'll get to desktop 1 with Chrome being shown as normal.

If you close one of the two excels, virtual desktops works again as expected.

What can I test to solve this mess?

Thanx a lot, I've been expecting a fix in every new compilation, with no luck.

If I switch my current modem router for a new one, would my PC's IP address change or stay the same? Is this my public IP address my cable company assigns me? Would this public address change when switching to a new router?

Answer:Will Switching to New Router Change IP Address?

Your public IP is set by DHCP but often ISP reserve the same one for you others change Everytime you login. Your local IP may not be the same either it's likely in the same 192 range

If I switch my current modem router for a new one, would my PC's IP address change or stay the same?

Answer:Will Switching to New Router Change IP Address?

It would likely change, the internal addresses are generally dynamically assigned by the router unless you have manually assigned one to a device. If you have manually assigned an IP address to a device and change routers then you will need to make sure to either change the devices IP to match the IP range of the new router or change the DHCP scope on the router to match you statically assigned IP addresses.

Why are you asking?

Hi!
Im going to switch completely to outlook from gmail. Problem is i need to change the outlook account name.. now i log in to my outlook account with my gmail-address, and i want to change that. When i try to, it just says that its not possible to change account name.
I thought maybe it would be easier to make a new account, but then i realised that i would mess up everything, me having 3 windows 8 pcs that all use the gmail-login. I also use skydrive, and have bougt apps in windows store..
I have also made an outlook alias, but that just appears as a folder in outlook.com when i want i to merge with the gmail-outlook account..
I hope you understand me, and can give me some advice :O

Answer:Switching from gmail to outlook, how to change account name etc?

I switched from Gmail to Outlook recently. There's an article on WP (Guide: How to get a new Live ID and keep all your Windows Phone app purchases | Windows Phone Central) about transferring your ID over and still maintaining your Windows Phone app purchases, although it requires an Xbox. I tried to go through this method the other day, and it was working until the account I was transferring to already had an Xbox profile attached--an accident from when it autogenerated one for me when I played an Xbox Live-enabled game on Windows 8. I don't know if this method would transfer Windows 8 app purchases over, but I thought I would provide the link in case you're willing to try it.
That rename feature may only be available for Hotmail users. I remember I was trying to get this switched over when Outlook.com was first released but couldn't find a way through the options in the Outlook.com control panel. But you can get pretty much the full Outlook.com experience by creating an alias through the settings page on Outlook.com. In the Manage Your Accounts section in the settings, you can select Your Email Accounts to change the default sending address to your alias, which would also apply to any device you may own. This option wasn't available when I was I was looking to do this, and I only found out just now searching for a solution for you. That seems as though you can use the superior Outlook.com interface through means of an alias--which allows you to send and receive messages--to ... Read more

I have set adaptive brightness to off and also turned off Intel's Display Power Saving Technology. But I noticed that the entire screen changes brightness (or contrast) while I switch between 2 windows (pictures). Is this normal?

I posted a video so you can see the problem (or is it?) in action

If you also want to test it out yourself, here are the images used while switching windows.

I also want to mention another issue I'm having (which I think is related to the one above, that's why I'm worried). I purchased an Asus X454LD last 5/5, and for some reason it keeps on flickering static. Sometimes not entirely on the screen, and not an opaque static but a translucent one that overlays with the work area. Then I got the unit replaced with a new one last 5/10 and the issue's still there. There are no specific programs or time that triggers this problem, it just happens. I even reinstalled both the Intel HD graphics driver and the dedicated 820m driver. I posted a video that shows the problem in action as well.

I've been using a black/grey theme that changes all the fonts to white and all of the backgrounds to black/grey. Sometimes, I have to switch to the original theme because I can't find the buttons on certain programs.

I don't mind switching, but everything time I do switch themes, the GUI, taskbar, and background of explorers do not switch back to the custom theme color. I've tried restarting and reinstalling everything, but nothing works. I'm using uxstyles 0.2.3, OnE (OldNewExplorer) 1.10, and this theme: Gray 2014 (dark theme Windows 8.1 Update 1) Upd.11 by ezio on DeviantArt. I have transparancy turned off. Does anyone have any idea what can cause this problem? I tried to install new OS, both XP & Vista both from scratch and recovery disc, but it still doesn't work. Usually when switching to tablet mode or switching back, screen will automatically set to new orientation, right? I suspected a while ago that when I switched to tablet mode, it didn't change any, but when I switched back, it changed. I thought I was messing up with some utilities or drivers. So, I didn't care that much. I just noticed that it didn't respond to anything now. As a result, ActiveRotate will not work as well since it will be used only in tablet mode. However,  I can calibrate accelerometer just fine; active protection also is working as it should be. Tablet button all work. In brief, I believe that there is a switch that is broken on my system, but I couldn't figure out what that is. I check on LCD part, http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-67024, I first thought LCD hinge is the one, but there is no wire connection or any sort to it. Now I have no clue. If you have any idea, please share. Thank you very much,sipp11Message Edited by sipp11 on 03-03-2009 10:59 PM

Answer:X61T: won't change screen orientation when switching to tablet mode

Hello sipp11! I have the exact same problem. I'm using Windows 7 Beta as OS and since January everything has worked perfectly. Unfortunately the tablet mode has stopped working the way you described it 2 days ago. Have you found a solution to this problem? I also tried to reinstall Windows 7, but it still doesn't work. Reinstalling the Wacom drivers didn't help either.   I'm starting to think that something with the hardware is wrong. Solution anyone???  Thanks in advance,Mike Message Edited by LevelbossMike on 04-02-2009 03:09 AM

Anyone else experience a problem with windows that are too large to view on the screen in laptop mode and won't move or zoom, and the only way to click on buttons like "print" or "save" that are outside the viewing area is to rotate to tablet mode?  This seems to happen when I'm using Citrix, but just wondered if there is some way to change screen resolution on-the-fly or master command to shrink the size of a window so it will be fully viewable on the screen, without having to switch the screen mode.

Answer:Some windows size won't change. Can only print by switching to tablet mode of x201t

That's not a tablet problem; you've probably got Windows dpi settings to 125%. It enlarges everything on the screen for the sake of netbooks. Just look for it in Control Panel.Sometimes if I hold the mouse all the way at the bottom of the screen, Windows moves the window up by itself so that the off-screen button comes back on screen. It works best if I position the window above an unused space along the Windows taskbar.Citrix is a Linux OS, right?

Hello,
Program recommendation thread.
I need 4 virtual desktops; I have 1 monitor at 1080p, and 1 monitor at 720p. I would like the 1080p monitor to display the active virtual desktop, while the 720p monitor consistently maintains a "preview grid" of all the desktops available.

As of right now with the programs I've tried, the virtual desktops are stretching across both monitors. The preview panels cannot be consistently stuck to one monitor and not the other.

I need:
- The 4 virtual desktops to only appear on the 1080p monitor
- The preview grid to only appear on the 720p monitor
- The preview grid to always be active and open
- Preferably: To be able to crop and zoom in to which sections of each virtual desktop I want to appear in each preview grid

Which program out there would be most suitable for this? *NOTE* DexPot does not have all these fucntions
Thanks!

Answer:Need: Virtual desktops on monitor 1, previews of desktops on monitor 2

I had posted this on the Monitor forum, but they said this is a Windows 10 issue and not a monitor issue.  When I disconnect the P2715Q from the laptop and start to use the laptop LCD, everything is OK. When I reconnect the P2715Q to the laptop, I notice font changes. In Windows 10 File Explorer the font in the left panel is larger than the right panel, and the fonts in Quicken are smaller. When I reboot the laptop, everything is back to normal on the P2715Q. Is this normal?  Is there a setting in Windows 10 that I need to make so I don't have to reboot when returning to use the P2715Q?

Hi,I'm going to switch from a W510 64 bit Win 7 to a W540 64 bit Win 7 and I wanted to know if instead of having to reinstall all my software, I could just switch my SSd from one machine to the other finding  a way to install new W540 drivers on my W510 Win 7 images ? Any idea of  if this is possible ? That would save me a lot if hours ....

Answer:Switching from W510 Win 7 64 bit to W540 Win 7 64 bit by just switching ssd drive.

Well, I have done this several times but in other Thinkpad series and always jumping to one newer generation (X60 to X200, T61 to T400/T500), never jumping three gens like your case. In my experience Win7 was smart enough and worked after some updates and reboots.

I would give it a try, you can always put the original HDD/SDD from the W540 back if it fails. Let Windows update the drivers, then run a Windows Update, then Lenovo's System Update and then remove the old drivers from your device manager.

Hi guy's just wondering if it's possible to get windows 7 to switch audio drivers when you switch to another user account.

For eg.. normal speakers device for my personal account and then have my multichannel device (profire 2626) set as default for my other user account 4 studio work.

Atm, if i change it on one account it changes on the other account which is annoying and i'd just like to set default device for each account so i don't have to do this.

Thx

Question: Desktops

My question is this:
Where are desktop images stored?

My explanation:
I don't need to know like C:\Windows\Documents\Pictures, or whatever. I know how to change my background.

What I mean is, where is the file that tells your computer what your background is, and is it easily editable?

I am trying to see what I can do to Windows through a Linux LiveCD and I would like to change the background on my friend's computer to play a joke on him -- I can't _just do it_ because he has a password. I can edit/add files to folder. I would just like to know where the file is that tells your computer what the desktop image is.

I will get many lulz from this if you can tell me.

So I've been looking for a Linux like virtual desktop software and it seems the people with the most knowledge of this are all on this forum, go figure.

I read through the old posts about some the programs and it seems the best one is Desktops?

I really don't care for the cube thing, would much prefer a more Linux like program, but I don't know of any that don't seem to have Issues with windows and the programs or features of windows 7.

To the people that have used Desktops for a while how has it been working and what are the Issues?

I'm still looking for a good Linux type program though. That program called Crystal desktops, the site is on allot of blacklists, I'm not going near that.

I'd really like to keep Aero working also. Ahh, I put the wrong program name on the header. Should have said Deskspace

I've tried to understand MS policies, but Yikes,,,, I cannot seem to grasp the concept. I have 50 2K clients. I would like for all of them to have the same desktop. More so, some type of Virtual Destkop.

Is there a product out there, then when the machine boots, it pulls in some type of preloaded desktop I can create and manage, -vs- each machine loading it's own desktop, where users can change the backgrounds, wallpaper, etc...

It would really be nice to manage one virtual desktop, so if I make a change, it propogates out across all 50 machines.

Server is running SBS2K

Answer:All the same desktops

GPOs are there to allow or prevent things to be done on PCs. An example would be to allow or disallow a wallpaper to be put.

The "default" desktop icons and settings needs to be done under C:\documents & settings\default\ , or ...\All Users . It's up to you on the PCs. Not on servers.

Question: Best Desktops ?

Hello

Who has the best reputation these days for desktops:

Dell
Asus
Or... ?

Best to stay away from HP ?

$ 600 range.
No gaming.
Just basic word processing, some light spreadsheets, and internet.

Thanks,
R.

Answer:Best Desktops ?

All of them will do if you are buying a desktop. They all make a pretty good home unit.

Do know that you could also build your own computer. It's not that difficult and you get better bang for your buck. I outlined most of the process here: QWERTY Articles Recommended Building Guide ? 2018 - Qwerty Articles

Question: Desktops

I am going to re-install the windowsXP for a client. The client has a desktop setting with background and screensaver that she wants to keep it as it is. How can I copy the desktop setting before I re-install windows xp. I knew how to do it but I totally forgot it. I need somehelp here. Thanks

Answer:Desktops

Hi,

Have your client run the Files and Settings transfer wizard on the old computer and save to a removable drive when prompted. Be sure to choose both files and settings.

Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Files and Settings Transfer Wizard

Then, on the new computer, have your client import the settings using the wizard.

It is a lot easier than copying the folders that store the settings individually.

Question: Virtual Desktops

As a Linux user, virtual desktops was a feature I always wished it was implemented in Windows.

With W10, there is no need to use 3rd party apps.

Now question: How many of you Windows 10 users use such feature?

Answer:Virtual Desktops

I utilize virtual desktops all the time on Windows 10, but as a previous Linux user, it is a feature " a handy one" I have become accustom to using.

anyone else seeing this issue on 10130?
1. Open two desktops
2. Open edge on desktop 1
3. Go to desktop 2, and open edge
4. It will take you to the open instance on desktop 1

and
1. open two desktops
2. open 3 or 4 apps on desktop 1
3. open some apps on desktop 2
4. do all app view on desktop 1 and it will show just the apps open on that desktop
5. go to desktop 2 and do the same, it will show all apps open on both desktops

weird... shoddy implementation it would seem

Answer:multiple desktops

yeah I noticed that awhile back when I first tried using that feature , mine does as you describe ,at first I thought what a great idea and though I might be able to actually have 2 desktops with different icons even ,that would be nice ,but it does not would like that either ,,so for me its a dead feature, unless in the final release it works the way we think it should to be a neat feature

Some months ago, I told my girlfriend (while out of state on business) to turn off her computer more often. Well, nearing my return the computer refused to turn on. Did nothing really, I got home. And tried to turn it on myself, and all it did was tick like a time piece (quite literally infact) I checked the back and the diode on the power supply was ticking like a bomb.

Another computer, seems to turn on completely, power up, fan functions etc. But it just keeps beeping.

Would anyone have the slightest clue what the hell may be going on? =P

Answer:Desktops on the Fritz

The the one with the "ticking diode" which I take to mean the PSU light is flashing on the back of the PSU is very likely a PSU issue. Also are you sure the ticking sound isn't from the HDD?

The second that turns on but keeps beeping has a hardware issue. Look up the beep codes for your computer to see what the beeping means. Then you can replace the faulty componet. One thing you can try is to just pull out all the componets out and reseat them, if you can't find or don't want to look up the beep codes.

Someone asked me to build them a PC that will display to four monitors (dual-SLi video cards) but allow two seperate keyboard/mouse units to control it. Each keyboard/mouse set would only work on two screens. This doesnt sound possible, more like I'd need two seperate computers to meet this requirement. Any ideas on this?

William

Answer:One PC, two seperate desktops. Is this possible?

I'm thinking the same way too... never heard of 2 sets of key/mouse for 1 computer...
All I've heard are KVM Switches (but they control multiple computers). I guess u can hide 2 computers (2 minis in a big case) (LOL). But i'm stumpped as you are for getting such a request.

I brought a Compaq desktop computer in October with Win 8 installed. Ran it for a month - then upgraded to 8.1 - all seemed ok - Then last week it loaded to desktop with no Icons - Then totally crashed - so I did a factory reset, got back to basic win 8 - but then when I tried to upgrade to 8.1 for a second time - it totally crashed - meaning I had to reset again.

The compaq website says my model hasn't been tested with 8.1 - Meanwhile those nice guys @ amazon have offered me a full refund. In a bit of dilemena as to whether to keep my PC and just run win 8 - not 8.1.

But my hunch is that any pc that run win 8 - shouldn't really have a problem with 8.1 - so my PC has a defect - and I should grab my cash while I can ?

Any comments appreciated...

I realize that there is a facility within WIndows 10 for multiple Desktops, but this does not seem to provide the configuration which i'm seeking.

I'm creating a GPO for a group of users that only need to be able to browse the Internet.  Everything seems to be working fine, i.e. the locked down parts of the policy (basically everything) are working fine.  The only thing that isn't working is the desktop redirection.  I'm redirecting allof the user's desktops to a folder on an unused server drive.  That folder is read only so that the users can't save anything to it.  The problem is that the desktops don't redirect.  The rest of the policy applies fine.  I've tried setting the policy to be "enforced" but that didn't help.Settings:Basic - Redirect everyone to the same locationTarget:  Redirect to the following locationTarget folder is a UNC path to the generic desktopAny ideas?

Question: Desktops V Laptops

Hi, i'm thinking of buying a laptop and was wondering what diffrence there is between a laptop and a desktop, is a 2.4 pentium4 the same in a laptop and in a desktop, is 32mg graphics card the same in both? with the size diffrence you would think a laptop wouldn't have the power of a desktop or am i wrong?

Answer:Desktops V Laptops

I have both types each with 2.4 P4 and 512k RAM. PC Mark 2002 gives the following results:-Desktop cpu 5703, memory 5429, hdd 902.Laptop cpu 2662(5736), memory 2463(4464), hdd 395(365)Figures in bkts are with mains charger connected and the desktops hdd is a fast one so I guess it depends on what you use it for. Hdd speed is likely to be your biggest difference in use (they are the right way round so I don`t know why its slower with the mains!).Graphics on the laptop are provided by a Mobility Radeon with 32mb RAM. On 3d mark 2001se it scores about the same as an older PIII system I have with the same RAM but is much lower than the desktops fancy new card!Workwise, I do nearly everything on the laptop and backup to the desktop but other than Solitare I don`t play games on it! The desktop is much better for that!

Hello everyone, Im hoping some of you may have a few moments to share advise on which of the 2 desktops would be better for casual graphic / web design. I typically use photshop, dreamweaver, illustrator and office suite. I need a new space saving desktop and have narrowed my options down to the following:1- HP Desktop Computer 8200 Elite Intel Core i7 2nd Gen 3.4 GHz 4 GB 500 GB HDD Windows 7 Professional 64-Bit (My concern is it only has 4 gb ram, doesnt say whether ddr3 or 4, and only 500gb hdd. )2 - HP Compaq 6305 Pro Small Form Desktop, AMD Quad Core A8 5500 3.2Ghz, 16GB DDR3, 1TB Hard Drive, DVDRW, Windows 10 (Im not crazy about win 10 but it does have 16gb ram and a larger hdd. Oddly enough, this one is cheaper than above, but seems to offer more. or am I missing something?) From what ive read the processors are somewhat similar in performance, so I was leaning towards the 2nd one with more ram and bigger hdd. Its listed $20 less than the 1st one with only 4gb ram. So am Im missing something or not understanding the specs? Appreciate any help with this. Thank you kindly in advance.

Answer:Advise on the better of 2 desktops please

I'd take Intel over AMD anyways...just opinion...1 thing i will point out is if you select a small form factor PC they are usually limited for upgrades as opposed to full desktop.

I have a bt broadband adsl modem on one pc and wanted to network them can anyone tell me what i need to do and buy both the pcs have 10/100 ethernet Any help would be much obliged. Ross mcdonagh

Answer:Networking my two desktops.

There is lots of help on this topic if you search for "networking" in the archive of helproom. The best way to network your two PCs (in my opinion) is to link them via a router. You can get a Linksys router for around £40 from ebuyer.co.uk You will also need network patch cables (RJ45) also from ebuyer. You may have to drill through a few walls (unless you go for wireless tech - which I don't know about but I believe it is more problematic)The best thing about linking them via a router is that all PCs on the network enjoy BB without any reduction in speed. Also it means that your main PC does not have to be switched on all of the time for the other PCs to go online. You do not have to run Win Network wizzard just yet. But once you have established the connection you might want to set up a home network to share files and printers. However this is very easy if both PCs are using Win XP. Hope this is enough to get you started.

Question: gateway desktops

I need a set of restore disk for a gateway that is out of warenty.
Any suggestions on where I can get a set of disk?

I went to gateway web site and they said they had been sold to someone else and they sent me to there site and I sent an e-mail and never received a reply and so I called and they played a recording that they was in chapter 11 bankrupsey.

Does anyone know where I can get a set of restore disk for a gateway computer???

Answer:gateway desktops

Well sadly Gateway was bought out and that company went under. So your best option is gonna be to find some one else who has the discs you need. Maybe on ebay or Amazon? What OS restore disks you looking for? Vista or XP? Do you have the Recovery Partition on the drive?

When I go into properties and desktop, the box with different backgrounds is in gray and and i cant click on, or scroll through it. Is there anything that would be preventing this? Also, I keep getting my background turning to an Active Desktop Recovery Screen, when after repeatedly checking, I dont have an active desktop(checked under custommize desktop/web) running. Is there some sort of program I dont know about causing this? Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Active Desktops

Do you have multiple user accounts set up on your computer? If so, log in under an administrator account (the main one) and check permissions for the account in question. If your computer is on a domain (eg. in an office) talk to your sysadmin about getting your ADS permissions changed.

Just found the new feature (for windows anyway) of multiple desktops. This I like a lot, makes multitasking that much more easier :-)

thanks for any help.

In build 10041, there has been a change to only display the active running programs icons in the taskbar for the current open Desktop. (See Insider Hub "New features in Build 10041") If you have multiple desktops running and would like to see ALL running programs on the taskbar, not just the current desktop, do the following.

Go to settings, system, multitasking, and change the option in the image below. You will see all running programs from all open desktops, and can click on each to toggle to that desktop.

Taskbar - Show Windows Open on Desktops in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

Answer:Multiple Desktops

Some people may like that setup (but I don't).

I have VirtuaWin +KvasDos Pager installed in W7.
It is similar to the virtual desktops setup in some Linux Distros.
It provides a visual indication of what is on each desktop using a toolbar on the Taskbar:

You can also drag programs to other desktops using the toolbar display.
Keyboard shortcuts can be used to move an active program window to another desktop too.

One of the reasons I installed it was to reduce Taskbar clutter when lots of programs are open.

MS should add something similar to Virtual Desktops in W10 (i.e. an always visible indicator showing your overall setup).
It should have an option to turn it on/off.

Question: Cybertron Desktops

Just saw a bunch advertised on the HH Gregg website. Looks like a 100% USA company with a good rep. I never heard of them but why would I since I have not bought a new desktop in over 9 years. Can anyone tell me how Cybertron compares to the old standards, eg Dell and HP? Thanks.

Answer:Cybertron Desktops

I'd rather buy a HP or Dell in that order before a cybertron. Cybertron computers have been bargain price and they try to make it look like a really good deal such as putting in a i7 processor etc, but then they use value RAM and ECS or other cheap motherboard brand which I wouldnt trust. I'd rather buy an i5 HP or Dell vs an i7 cybertron and know that I'm getting quality parts vs a mix n match bargain with questionable quality. Their market is the people who only look at specs vs quality and so if you looking for the fastest for your money you might find faster in cybertron but then 1 or 2 years from now its dead with blown motherboard and the i5 HP or Dell are passing it and continue to work another 5 to 10 years. Also cybertron is the gamer system for people to scared, lazy,  or unable to build their own with better quality parts. With the HP you would need to convert an otherwise home or business grade computer into a gaming system with video card and possibly a power supply upgrade as well. Dell would also be the same unless going with their Gaming System product line that is ready to go out of the box as a gaming rig.

I understand what a virtual desktop is but I cannot think of a reason I'd use one - what am I missing out on?
What ways are you using virtual desktops?

Answer:What are you using virtual desktops for?

For me, it makes it easier to split my "worlds", e.g. first desktop is for general web browsing; second desktop is for my online work; third desktop is for my dissertation; and fourth desktop is for my personal space. This way, I could easily take a break from "work" by simply switching desktops, or if I decide to read something heavy or edit some photos I've taken I simply move to desktop four.

thank you

p.s. i also noticed when i play certain games, i cant get my mouse to the other desktop, anyway to make it go and stay on the game as well?

Answer:independent desktops

hi monster, unfortunately you cannot have independent desktops as you answered the question yourself, the mouse can't be used in two different places at once, and neither can the keyboard, the only way I can think of talking to your friends while you are in-game is by xfire or an in-game chat client similar to xfire, believe it or not, full screen applications are dependent on input devices to be connected at all times, there was a time when the mouse was directly drawn into the games but not now, applications take exclusive control of these devices.

Machine running Windows XP SP2. Example of my problem:

I am logged directly into this PC or through RDC with my Administrator Account (lets say Saint).

If I leave site and try to connect to this PC using "Remote Desktops" or "Remote Desktop Connections" or if my connection breaks and I have to re-connect using the same account (Saint), the following occurs. I briefly see the desktop and all my currently running applications closing before Windows forces my ID to log off. I then have to reconnect through RD/RDC and I can log in to the PC.

The problem is since it forces my account to log off any apps I had open are gone.

In Remote Desktops, I have tried checking the box to "Connect to Console" and the same thing happens.

There are other PC's in the lab that I can connect to over and over through RDC without being forced to log off first. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I can change the resolution, but every time I try and change the color, the screen goes black for a good 30 seconds, and when it comes back, it says "your settings have been changed do you wish to keep the bla bla bla" - but it's still at 4 colors. And while it's at it, it switches the resolution back to 640x480. I'm not sure what you need to know for this... I have WinXP and my video card is an Intel 82810E.

Answer:help! desktops messed up!

Download and install the latest Intel 82810E chipset drivers. Sounds like you have lost yours.

Either Intel or your motherboard makers site (preferred) will have them.

Question: Virtual Desktops

So I made the mistake of getting too used to Linux (heh), and miss virtual desktops.

I downloaded Dexpot, and have it set up and all, but I was wondering if anyone knows how to have an option to 'Move with Window', where you hit a key combo to move it to a different desktop, and it switches desktops along with the window.

Answer:Virtual Desktops

Compiz is also great tool . You can try it.

Is there a program that any one uses that could allow me to have two seperate OS'es running at the same time like in a virtual desktop? I have seen this capability with virtual's with servers but not for standard desktops. I use to do a dualboot or hot swap drive, but that still only allows to boot to one desktop. Any input is appreciated...

Question: Animated Desktops?

I'd like to know how to set up an animated desktop. I tried DeskScapes but when I pressed the apply button on the wallpaper nothing happened. I also turned on transparency because I read somewhere that it helped.

I know of a way to get Dreamscene working on win7, but it implies downgrading to vista first, and then upgrading back to win7. A rather plump methode, but it's the only way to get it working :

Question: multiple desktops?

hi,
i'm just wondering if windows 7 x64 has a feature where i can switch between multiple desktops. i have a computer set up with linux with ubuntu os that has this feature and i always liked it. now i want to have it on win7. i know there are downloads for it, but do i already have this capability?

Answer:multiple desktops?

Windows does not offer that feature. I would love to see it implemented myself. That is a compelling feature of Linux for sure. Microsoft does have the virtual desktop manager in power toys and there are third party solutions to virtual desktops.

Here is one:

Question: Virtual Desktops

I heard Windows 7 was to include Virtual Desktop support, like Linux. However, I can't find this anywhere.

Anyone else?

Mike

Answer:Virtual Desktops

I had not heard that Win 7 was going to natively support virtual desktops, but here is a link to a SysInternals program for this:

Answer:different wallpaper/desktops

Some editions of windows merely include alternate wallpapers, such as my dad's copy of XP Pro SP1, doesnt have as many as my XP Pro SP2 install. If you really want some of his they should be is "C:\Windows\Web\"

I am unable to pinpoint the exact point of occurrence, but I am now unable to have autologin when initiation Vista Home Premium. Each time, a temporary desktop is created.

I can find my original desktop items by going to c:\users\bill\desktop. However I am unable to have the system boot to that original desktop.

Something is probably corrupted, but I don't know where to start for correction.

I tried restoration with no success.

I've had issues before and am very grateful for the helped I've received here. Now I need help again!

I've gone through the Win XP clean process for both machines, and the first went without a hitch. I'm attaching logs for review by trained eyes. Since only 4 uploads are allowed, the first four text files are combined into one in the following order: SAS, Mbam, Combofix and RootRepeal. MGlogs are separate.

I took the opportunity to get rid of anti-malware that I didn't like, just in case the question arises as to why none appears among installed software. I'm going with Comodo(over AVG), Spybot S&D and Spyware Blaster. Will this combo be redundant in any way?

The second machine will be addressed in the next post of this same thread.

Answer:Two Slow Desktops...

Before I look at your logs, I am going to split off your second post as this is a different machine and we need to have separate threads for each system.

You can setup two KB's, two mice and two monitors but when both are on you will be fighting over the cursor as you can't have two users working on the same desktop at the same time. What is more important for either of you, your grandpa's work or your game playing!, if the work is more important and work usually is then your grandpa should be allowed to get his work done first and when he is done then you can play your games.

Answer:Want to have 2 different desktops on 2 monitors

If it is your backup computer, get another monitor for yourmain one and you can both have exclusive use to a PC. What you are wanting to do would require 2 PCs anyway.

I somehow really messed things up. I have two of the exact same desktops running together. When you click on the Start button and you see the desktop name, they are listed as the exact same name, one under the other. In Windows explorer under the desktop name, the name of the second desktop appears in alphabetical order in the same directory as Documents, Downloads, Favorites, etc. The path for this second exact desktop is c:\users. Does anyone have any idea how to get rid of this desktop. Everytime I try to delete it, it says it is open (because of course it is a mirror copy of what I am running). Thanks so much.

Answer:Two Desktops running at once

You could try going to the folder and just delete, unless this is what you tried or

I would try a system restore, although this may not work because you say it

is located in documents.

The next way would be to open a new user account. You can obtain use of all your

programs etc by taking ownership. If you do open a new user account, we will

be happy to show you how to have use of your prgrams etc.

A third way you may want to try is just to change the name of your user

account.

I am sure one of these methods will work.

Hi, i recently put various programmes such as 'Ccleaner', Defraggler, SpyBot search and destroy on 1 'User' account but on the other 2 user accounts they dont appear on there. Please can anyone tell me will they be 'working' on the other 2 desktops/users? And how do i get the shortcuts to appear please?

Answer:3 'Users' but different desktops-Please help?

For the 2 user accounts they don't appear, you can try going into the Program Files folders of each program & creating shortcuts. Then place these shortcuts where you need them, & try them out to see if each program runs & works it should. G
