I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Solved: Billion Bipac 5102 Router - ERROR fail to update due to duplicate to a Rem Node Name

Reset it to factory defaults by holding the reset button for 10 seconds with power on.

Turn off everything, router, and ALL attached devices.
Turn on the router, wait for it to connect.
Turn on the attached computers.

I've an Huawei hg520b modem router from TalkTalk. It's time to upgrade. I still get broadband view phone line. I'm not planning on getting fibre optic broadband.
Is it best to buy another modem router (e.g Billion BiPAC 7800DXL) or get a new router (TP-Link TL-WDR4900). If I get a wireless router can I disable the wireless of the Huawei and use as a modem connected to the WAN socket on a wireless router?

If you're wondering how I'm using the internet I'm tethering through my iPhone
I have a Billion Bipac 5100.
About 2 hours ago it was working perfectly. I disconencted it because I re-arranged the room the router was in. I plug it back in and I get not internet connection. Whats the deal!?

I've Tried doing a restart by pressing the Restart Button for 6 seconds (10 to be sure) and all I get is the 'Sys' light flashing when it should be a solid green. I don't know what else to do. I usually have my PS3, voip and wireless connected to it but at the moment just the computer so it doesn't get confused or something, I don't know =/

So what can I do? =( its been like this for an hour!

EDIT:
Even the PPP and ADSL lights aren't even on. =(

I have a Billion BiPAC 7800 (N) modem/router. I am trying to set up an ethernet connection for my desktop computer with its (reinstalled) XP operating system (Home Edition). I plug the ethernet cord from the 7800 into the desktop, but I get no light on the modem/router or on the port at the back of the computer. In the Basic Installation instructions in the router/modem manual it says that I need to ensure that the TCP/IP protocol stack and Ethernet network adaptor must be installed. When I look up the Device manager in Windows on this computer, it says that I have a 1394 network adapter 'working properly'. It does have a question mark against Ethernet Controller and says that this is 'not installed'. My desktop has an ASUS P5GC-MX motherboard.I have checked the bios setup and it shows that the Onboard PCIEX 10/100Mb LAN is 'enabled'.

Some time ago I had a Linux operating system on this same desktop computer and it had no trouble getting an ethernet connection from the same 7800 modem/router.

I have also have no trouble getting an ethernet connection to this Windows 7 laptop from the same 7800 modem/router.

Have you any advice for me about how to get an internet connection via an ethernet cable for the XP desktop computer?

Regards

Outback

Hi

I've got a problem with McAfee causing BSODs and have been advised in another thread to uninstall it and use MS Security Essentials in combination with Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware instead.

I was also advised to enable my firewall and therein lies my problem.

The user manual for the 7800N is not great and doesn't mention anything about being able to enable or disable the firewall. It just talks about Packet Filtering and blocking WAN ping.

I have no idea if the firewall is on or off by default and can find no obvious settings in the router's setup page.

Should I enable WAN ping blocking or Intrusion detection? I want to ensure that my computer is safe when I uninstall McAfee.

Screenshot of the setup page is attached.

Thanks

Sally

Answer:How to enable firewall on Billion BiPAC 7800N?

The firewall that you should be enabling is built into windows.

Click your start button, and enter "firewall" in the search box. Windows Firewall should be on the list. Click it. On the left side of the window is a "link" that says "Turn Windows Firewall on or off". In the next window, enable the firewall, and hit ok.

We have Billion BiPAC 7800N (802.11n) router set up in our house.

The wireless performance is awful.
The maximum speed (even at 30cm range) is 15Mb/s (with 802.11g or 802.11n dongles).

Any suggestions as to what might be causing this issue and how to fix it?

Using the 802.11n Only setting with WPA2 security and AES encryption should at least give the N capable clients much better speeds but the problem is that the wireless G clients won't be able to connect any more. You can also use channel bonding "20-40Mhz" setting to increase bandwidth.

The mixed wireless settings are holding the router back although using mixed N+G you should see at least 54Mbps assuming 5 bars signal strength.

I'm running Windows 64 bit and Office 2010. I use Office Outlook to download my emails from my Hotmail account. Until yesterday (27 Sep 13) it was running fine but then Outlook no longer downloaded any emails although I could still send them. Other internet functions are fine. The error messages I get from Outlook are:

Task [email protected] reported error (0x80041003): Theserver reported a temporary error. Error: 5102. Server.Xfs request ‘SyncBinary’failed. Response code: ‘DbError’, server response: ‘720 0’

Task [email protected] reported error (0x8004102A) : ‘Errorwith Send/Receive. There was an errorsynchronizing your folder hierarchy. Error: 80041003

I seem to have had a Microsoft update at about the same time so I tried a system restore to before the update but no change. I went to the Connector download site and ran a repair but I haven't tried to reinstall Connector. I have reinstalled my email account but no change either.

Grateful for any assistance.

Hi,

I was updating to the latest bios for my Acer 5102 wlmi, everything seemed to be going fine during the process until it got to about step 13 of 17 on the update. At this point the screen displayed a bunch of vertical lines and wouldn't respond to anything. I left it for about twenty minutes hoping that it would somehow finish the process.

At this point, I decided to try to power the machine down, power button wouldn't work so I unplugged it from the wall and popped the battery out. Put the battery back in fired it up and nothing, blank screen... no bios I presume. My first thought was to find the cmos battery and remove it for awhile to reset the bios... I opened it up and found the cmos battery soldered to the motherboard.

So, I've read that it's possible to do an emergency recovery of the bios from floppy, but my laptop doesn't have a floppy drive! What do I do? Will recovery from cd work, or a flash drive?

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Kris

Answer:Acer 5102 froze during bios update!!!

I think you'll want to send the laptop in to get it fixed. Its bad enough when a BIOS update goes bad in a desktop, but in a laptop its usually much worse

I am setting up a Billion 7800N router and under the wlan heading are the wireless settings, in there is the option to enable or disable the Radius 802.1x what is this? also what is the difference between WPA, WPA2, WPA/WPA2-PSK, WEP?

Answer:Setting up a Billion router

Disable Radius 802.1x because your wireless network won't have a Radius server. WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) was the original method of securing wireless networks, but it is easily broken. Only use it if the PC's wireless adapter doesn't support WPA.WPA (WiFi Protected Access) is much more secure. The setting is often WPA-PSK (Pre-Shared Key) with TKIP encryption. WPA2 is a next generation and more secure implementation of WPA.

Answer:Upgraded 7 to 10 and now can't connect to Billion 7401VGP-M router

Hello Gatorau Welcome to the Ten Forums!

Ironically I have a 7 Home Premium laptop that just saw upgraded to 10 running not into connection problems but a bad install where things were missing! That seems to be typically seen more so from 7 to 10 then from 8 or 8.1 to 10 being closer in the version numbers.

The real connection problem concerning wireless however was seen with another 7 desktop that uses a usb WiFi plugin type adapter to connect through the router that sees no 10 drivers available for1 Yet 7 won't connect to the ISP modem/router by ethernet on the 10/7 dual boot seen there. The case is a mini tower I can move around for temporary set ups.

At you are able to connect while both 10 and 7 alike pick up on nearby home networks which indicate others with the same ISP. If 10 isn't detecting the original set up if the router has a firewall where you put a user name and password for example you may want to consider the clean install option at this time where the fresh clean install won't be buggy but properly detect the router you have there. Windows 10 - Clean Install - Windows 10 Forums[2]=Installation%20and%20Setup

I had several problems here initially between two desktops and laptop all resolved quickly by taking that route.

Linksys Cable Modem
Linksys 802.11B wireless router
One wireless node
One wired node (D-Link Ethernet NIC)
All new Networking Hdwe.

My wireless node is 10 times as fast as my direct connected PC. This is the exact opposite of what I'd expect.
Wired PC NIC does the same thing whether set for Automatic or manually forced to 100Mbps and Full Duplex.
Wired PC speeds are barely above dial-up (8Kbps or less)
Wireless PC speeds are 20 times that.
Any ideas out there???

Answer:Slow wired node on 802.11b wireless router

I'd start by taking a very close look at the cable, specifically the connectors, and the NIC's. You'll see this with poor connections frequently.

I have an Acer Aspire Ethos laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate x64. SP1 is installed according to system properties (came installed).

Windows update was working fine until maybe June or May of this year.

I have tried a number of hotfixes, several microsoft fixit (automatic normal and aggressive runs), the sfc /scannow in admin CMD mode, and also uninstalled the last ten or so updates. I have also deleted the contents of the /Downloaded Installation Files/ within C:/Windows but that also did not fix the error.

Have also tried disabling my antivirus but that did not change anything, windows update will not self-update at all.

Nothing seems to work. Please help.

Below see a typical update attempt from the log (repeats almost every other day more or less the same.

So after using Win7 for the past week or two I've finally figured out it was crashing my router. The worst part is the situation under which the router fails. Basically anytime I'm downloading a file whether it be through my browser, or games over Steam and the vast majority, if not all of my bandwidth is utilized, within a few minutes the router stops responding and must be physically reset. Windows 7 reports the issue as the DNS server not responding.

This is not an issue with the router, as no one else in my household is having, or has had this kind of issue before and I certainly didn't when I was running XP.

I have used SpeedGuide.net's "TCP Optimizer" though I probably shouldn't have as they said you shouldn't really on Vista or 7 and I've also used their SG TCP/IP Patch which is geared towards Vista and 7.

Thats your issue. More than likely your router is not coping with the optimised traffic.

Hi,

New here, trying to complete a work assignment and not having much luck.

I have a database with a column of numerical data [Layer #] that indicates a level above ground for a sampling port. There are 32 ports with multiple ports in each layer #. The actual height above ground ([Layer Ht]) that corresponds to the layer # changes over time. I'm trying to update the databases to reflect the correct height in m of each port according to its layer #. I am receiving a Duplicate output destination error and do not know how to restructure the query to avoid this. Here is a sample of the query that I am attempting:

UPDATE [Ring 2] SET [Ring 2].[Layer Height] = 0.25, [Ring 2].[Layer Height] = 1, [Ring 2].[Layer Height] = 4, [Ring 2].[Layer Height] = 7
WHERE ((([Ring 2].Date)<#2/1/2010#) AND ([Layer #]=1) AND ([Layer #]=2) AND ([Layer#]=3) AND ([Layer#]=4));

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I have the AT&T Broadband Wireless/Wired Modem ( "PACE" Brand name, Black in color, less than 3 months old) with 24 Mbps Speeds consistantlly wired and 21.5 wireless.
I need 3 more wired connections than the AT&T (4) wired ports will allow.
I purchased a TP-LINK TL-R860 8-Port wired router ( http://www.tp-link.com/en/products/details/?model=TL-R860 ) and tried both the setup wizard CD that came with it, and factory resetting it and just doing it with no wizard. Currently it is factory reset.
Also, I went into the settings of the AT&T router and tried both of the following options under "Link Configuration" ; "Add Additional Network" - filling out the router address and subnet mask , and when that failed, erased it all and saved and then tried the option "Add Cascaded Router" , filling out the router address and subnet mask, as well as assigning 192.168.1.2 as the actual address for the router.
Fail, Fail, Fail
Really tearing my hair out over this one.
If I can get your help on this, it would be much appreciated, I will be checking this post every other hour during the day.
Thank YOU!

I was trying to upgrade to windows 8 Pro on my Lenovo G580, as I got my student license from my University. There started the problem, when trying to upgrade from the DVD (burnt ISO) the upgrade immediately sends "Setup failed to initialize the startup folder" error.

So after few searches, I found on lenovo website that I need to install all important updates first. That's where I found another problem, which is my thread about. I tried so many methods until I found this forum.

Few other problems I ran through while trying to fix it alone:
Updating seems like stuck at 0KB total, 0%, and returns the same error after a while.
Can't enter safe mode from F8, it gets stuck at some CPNP file while loading. However, I can enter the safe mode by choosing Safe Boot from Msconfig and restarting the system.
Running CHKDSK from CMD [Admin] gave "F Parameter not specified, running in read-only mode", and then runs normally.
Tried to download and install updates alone, they all fail when trying to install.
One of the times where the update readiness tool was running, my pc encountered BSoD. And once when I was scanning with malwarebytes.
SFC Scannow command scan returns that no violations in integrations where found.
Note: I just ran the SURT, it said installation successful after a while of running it!

Thanks in advance,

Rahmani

The installation failed in the SECOND_BOOT phase with an error during PRE_OOBE operation.

I have searched for an answer and haven't found one. I have tried to trouble shoot it as best I can by unplugging everything but my keyboard/mouse, updated chipset, etc.. MS techs haven't been much help. Any thoughts? The iso is not on the OS drive, not sure if that matter. I would rather not have to nuke the system. I hate having to reinstall programs (adobe is the worst). Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi all,

Instructed to create a new thread for this error.

I am running w7 x64 ultimate.

As per the instructions Windows Update Posting Instructions here are my results

1) SURT
still running

2) sfc /scannow
No problems, nothing in log (no CSI entries)

3) Error code is 8000FFFF, additionally two errors are logged in event viewer when trying to run the update file manually (Windows6.1-KB2758857-x64.msu)

-a- Error: Windows update client
Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x8000ffff: Security Update for Windows (KB2758857).

4) CBS.rar attached

5) Other things tried

Apart from running various microsoft fixit utilities suggested elsewhere, I also tried to run the update with msconfig, selective startup, only windows services active, and of course failed.

Answer:Update fail w7 x64: KB2758857. Error code 8000FFFF

Your CBS logfiles are generating at a very high speed - and it's therefore likely that you have a huge amount of corruption.
There is no CheckSUR data in your upload - either you uploaded before it ran, or it failed before being able to generate a log.

please try again......

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

CHKDSK C: /R

and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -
then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

SFC /SCANNOW

and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and attach it to your reply.

Thanks.

Hi Majorgeeks,
Post malware infection and successful cleaning, I'm in the process of protecting my computer using you 'How to Protect you computer from Malware' recommendations and I find that I am falling at the first hurdle. I can't install any Windows updates and I keep on getting the above error message. I trouble shot for the solution and it looks as if I need to go into the system 32 to check it out. I don't really feel experienced enough, so I'm wondering if you can help me out in any way possible.
Thanks,

Answer:Windows Update Fail [Error number: 0x80070424]

This is really something you should work in the Software Forum if your PC has already had all malware removed.

However try the below:

Please click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK. This will open a command prompt window. Enter the below command at the command prompt and then hit the enter key.

%SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\REGSVR32.EXE %SYSTEMROOT%\SYSTEM32\WUAUENG.DLL

Now look for the C:\MGlogs.zip file and attach it no matter what happened while doing the above.

If that does not help, try disabling protection software while updating. And if that still does not work, I suggest that you continue in the Software Forum.

Hey Guys,

I tried updating Windows 7 and got this Error: Code 9C47.
I then downloaded and tried to run SURT and it says -
'The following updates were not installed: Hotfix for Windows (KB947821)'
My cbs log is attached to this post.

Thanks for any help, appreciated.

Answer:Windows 7 Update Fail - Error Code 9C47

Odd - your SFC scan doesn't appear to have complete properly, either, although it does seem to have fixed one minor file error.

I have a suspicion I know what may be the problem - this may help isolate the cause....

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

Did the best I could reading the posting rules for the forum and the Update forums, but please let me know if there's anything else I need to do.

I attached a screenshot of the Update that has failed to load for months now and the error code it gave me (both are also in the post title).

I was unable to download the SURT as I didn't see the correct one for my system and I wouldn't want to download the wrong one. For this reason I attached a screenshot of my system spec.s so if I need this for you to help me, you can let me know which to download. Also following the links on the Update posting rules took me to this link: I'm fairly certain my system is x32 based (could be wrong) which I don't see as an option.
System Update Readiness Tool fixes Windows Update errors in Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008

Also, I'm not sure it helps but I saw that someone had, had the same Update fail but with different error code. I doubt it helps but just in case here's a link to his thread:
KB2742599 won't install

I did not follow those directions, I just thought I'd mention that it had been on here before.

This has been a problem for a long time now that I've been ignoring and when I got annoyed with it I found this site. I followed all steps in the Update posting guide (except the aforementioned 1st) but let me know if there's any other information needed. Hopefully someone can help me out, thanks so much in advance!

You receive a "0x80070002" or "0x80070003" error code after you download an update from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or from Windows Server Update Services
Then try updating and post the logs if it fails - which is shouldn't

Hey guys,

I have an uncle who has a lawyer's office who has recently decided to upgrade his network. He currently has a server that's processor runs at 2.8 ghz with 1GB of ram. It does have decent storage and a tape drive. Their currently ran as a wireless network with only the server ran hard line.

I am decent in networking have a couple CCNA's and am currently studying for my CCNP. The problem is once I get to the CLI I'm fine I'm just not sure on what kind of equipment I should have him buy.

I was thinking of buying a new server nothing crazy somewhere under 2 grand. Then I want to purchase a switch because I don't want the network ran wireless anymore.

This is what I'm unsure about on what to purchase. For the server I want to keep their old one running after a format as a backup file server to do incremental backups once a month. The newer server will only be providing domain login, file server, and an application server for one program. The switch I'm completely lost one how nice I should go. I have a Cisco catalyst 3500 series LS that I used for my CCNA labs I could just give him or should I buy a newer one.

The main reason I took this in the middle of a semester is because I need the real world experience you don't get in the class room. Thank you in advance to anyone who made it all the way through this.

Answer:Solved: upgrading 10 node network

For an office server, look a the small business options from Dell and HP. I would choose something with Windows 2008 Small Business Server as this is a good deal for small offices.

As for the switch, get a reliable but inexpensive unmanaged switch. For 10 users, you don't need anything that requires configuration. Keep it plug-and-play.

This may be really simple and I'm just completely overlooking the solution...but-

I have a circular doubly linked list with 4 nodes following the header, all of type Nodetype.
struct Nodetype;
typedef Nodetype* Nodeptr;

struct Nodetype
{
int id;
char name[20];
int position;
Nodeptr Left, Right;
int numnodes;
};

//I also have two pointers, p and q, defined as so-

Nodeptr p;
Nodeptr q;

p points to the 1st actual node of the list, beside the header node.
q points to the 3rd actual node of the list, p->Right->Right ;-)

Question:
How can I copy the contents of the node that p points to into the node that q points to?
q=p; is not working!

Struggling!!!

Any help would be great, thanks.
Eric

Answer:Solved: C++ Node Copy struggles

Yes p=q would not work with strings.
So far all I know about programming is C, and whenever you want to copy a string you can't just simply put p=q. I did that on a lab, but the TAs corrected me.

In C++, is there a function called "strcpy(p,q)", where p is destination and q is source? (Or similar?)
I think it was in the string.h library.
Also, make sure you use malloc or declare char p[#size] to have the copy location available.( You'll get seg. fault otherwise)

Ran Windows Update on wife's computer today (Biostar A75-MH mobo, AMD A8-3850, 8Gb DDR3-1600, 64Gb Samsung 830 SSD boot drive, Win7 x64) and upon restart it froze at 35% installing the updates. After it did nothing for 30 min I rebooted. It boots to the desktop but with an error box saying failed to load sortbls.nlp. Explorer isn't working, can run any programs, Start menu won't come up, just sits with the blue circle spinning. Tried to run system restore but the 11-15 one disappeared from the list when I tried to run it and now just shows the only restore point as Windows Update Critical Update from today which fails. Startup Repair says no problems.

Any suggestions?

Wanted to report to the world that I was getting this failure during automatic updates for Windows XP Home edition.

After a day of trying to follow the Microsoft suggestions, I finally tried to execute the individual updates manually. When doing so, I had an error copying the file c:\.....\branches.inf.

I found a post on this site by MOXYLL (http://www.techsupportforum.com/show...t=branches.inf) in which she suggested changing the following file to read/write from read only:
c:\windows\inf\branches.inf.

Guess what?!?! It worked!! All my Windows Update failures went away.

Now if I could somehow reclaim my day! ... ARGH!

Hope this helps some frantic frustrated person out there!

I have Windows 10 Home (32bit) installed and I cannot find a way to get Update, as you used to be able do, to HIDE the offending update. (THANKS Microsoft for removing functionality from Windows YET AGAIN).
I'm at my wits end with this. . I have asked about this problem before directly reporting the issue to Microsoft (Surprise surprise... NO RESPONSE. I'd get a better response from a brick wall). I keep getting Update Failed error with the following codes:

Code 800F0900 (unknown error)

The updates are for:
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64-based Systems (KB2879017)
and

I had the same issue with .Net Framework updates, but uninstalling with a .Net full removal tool then re-installing did the trick there.

So far I've tried manually installing the updates, running WindowsUpdateDiagnostic, running Tweaking.com Windows Repair (All in One), Microsoft FixIt. None of these have helped and am a loss.

okay this might be a little long but Im going to attempt to explain without rambling. (hang with me. Im a girl and we tend to ramble to explain things. haha)

So. Two weeks ago I got a new Video Card. (Nvidia GeForce 8600GT). after I got that my computer started to freeze up. originally i thought it was something with Mozilla as I could still play WoW and no other programs were acting out. then other programs like Sonar 7 started to freeze up the computer. I called XFX about the problem and the guy said what I described did not sound like a problem with the video card and was probably just coincidental that it happened around the same time.

People had suggested that it could be faulty RAM. I have A-Data DDR2-800 2 sticks of 1g each.

I thought maybe if i just wipe the drive and reinstall xp it might help. afterall, I have downloaded a lot of torrents and random things over time. Im careful about what I download but hey, we are never safe from a virus.

So I went to go install my XP (yes its not a legal copy. shoot me.) and it seemed to boot from CD okay but then it started saying it couldnt copy certain files and to press esc to continue. I tried esc through all the files it would not copy and obviously it wouldnt run xp with what it could copy.

So then I thought well i'll try taking out a stick of RAM and see if its doing that because of a hardware issue because I had read that it can be a hardware issue when it does that. it still did not copy all the files.

Hi,

Neither of them installs. Errorcode returned is 800B0100.

It looks like you have been succesful solving this for others so I hope you can help me.

Attached the CBS log folder. I had to remove some .cab files or it would have been to large but all log files are there.
Attachment 340490

I also run SFC /SCANNOW but that came up clean (no integrity violations).

Thank you in advance for your help

At first glance, this looked as if it was a candidate for a repair install - but it may not be that bad.
I think most of the file problems are related to a single update, so I'll try and post a fix some time tomorrow.

Are you by chance running a modified Kernel (ie a non original MS OS)?

ntkrlstaforce.exe isnt a "standard" OS file?

"from a malware blog site"
you're using a modified kernel (NTKRLSTAFORCE.EXE). That's not supported by anyone. Since all kaspersky versions provide extended protection with deep ties into the kernel, expect it won't work.
so basically, if you're using a modified kernel:
-if it works: good for you
-if it doesn't: s***s for you

I tried to update my BIOS on my T530 today.  Tried both 2.07 and 2.50 (I'm running 2.04).  I'm using the Windows app, not the BIOS CD.  With both 2.07 and 2.50, I get the following error message: "Fail to do module option. The utility process has not completed."  Can anyone help?  I saw one thread that indicated this may be because I chose the option to keep my custom start up image when presented with the option, but I was afraid to choose anything else.  FYI, now the Lenovo update utility doesn't even tell me there's a BIOS update available...it's listed in my installation history as a successful update! Thanks for any help you can offer.

Answer:BIOS Update fail on T530 - Fail to do module option

If you are on Windows 8 it is likely because you need to do a full shutdown. The default is hibernate shutdown for the next boot. Then there will be cold reboot after which if may finish the process. Windows 8 shutdowns are totally different process and the machine is never totally off.

FYI: On last shut down of system on 9-24-2012(win7 ultimate) windows update installed KB2538243. When starting system back up several hours later, window's would not start. Started in safe mode, used system restore, all ok for now! Checked recent updates and found that the above update "failed to install" and was the only update listed. Anyone else have similiar problem.
Thanks in advance.......

You are not the only one. If you don't use Microsoft Visual C++, just uninstall it.

Hi,

I am brand new at this stuff working as a volunteer in a volunteer organization. I've been asked to maintain their Workgroups computer set up (Windows XP Professonal, 8 computers).

One of the nodes has been designated the "mainserver". All nodes can access that server by for example:
start --> run --> \\mainserver
This causes the mainserver's directory folder to open and from here user's can access files.

One of the computers has crashed and I am configuring a new one. All has gone well but for one thing:
start --> run --> \\mainserver
does not work.

What does work is
start -->run --> \\192.168.3.14 (the ip address of mainserver).

On this new computer, how can I create the logcial name "mainserver" for the above IP address.

Thanks for your help.

Answer:Solved: logical name for the ip address of a node in a Windows XP Worgroup

Sounds like a master browser issue.
You could disable the computer browser service and see if that solves the issue for that computer.
Or you could just make an entry in the hosts file on that computer for the main server.

Good evening all,

Just to flag that this has also been posted in W7 Support sub-forum here:

Other thread

Re. the instruction thread - the link to DSS doesn't seem to work, and GMER is for 32-bit only. If there's anything I can do to kick things off, please let me know and I'll do it!

I've googled extensively around the issues I am facing, and tried all proposed solutions, but none have worked thus far.

Symptoms:I have 1-2 minutes of freedom after booting, then I can no longer run new programmes. I also cannot close some programmes e.g. Skype. Tabs in Chrome spazz, flash player dies, and any new navigation ends up with an eternal hanging/loading problem.
Unable to restart/shutdown conventionally (I have to do it physically)
I get the error "Failure to display security and shut down options ..." when I try ALT+CTRL+DEL

Safe mode is absolutely fine, so I assume it's not anything hardware related (though please correct me if I'm being naive). My second drive which runs off XP, which I only use for storage now, boots fine and has no problems.

I have not installed any new drivers, programmes, or otherwise made any meaningful changes recently.

Solutions I've tried:Reset winsock.
Shut off all start-up programmes using MSCONFIG.
Run virus scan at boot-up, deleted 2 items (win32 installmate ... prob trojans? Was an .exe that I had downloaded but never ran).
Run Malwarebytes scan, deleted 1 fairly innocuous item.
Run full scan-disk check.
Run a SFC scan... Read more

Ok about a month ago I reformatted my pc / backed it up and put back on MCE 2005 with my dell re-installation disc, everything seemed aright and I immediately installed SP3 and then continued on with installing my programs, and I have quite a few that should be in the TaskTray but are not there. The list of software that msconfig says should load isnt loading or isnt showing up in the tasktray, Also after it my mcafee started to say that it wasnt protected, and when i checked it 5 things had been disabled, and the final thing is that when ever i try to do microsoft updates from the site or Automatic updates they always fail.

I posted in the malware section and they did not see any.

Answer:[SOLVED] items not always starting, mcafee fixing, update fail

Hello There a104375, Welcome to TSF!

I suggest you try this workaround for Windows Update issues...

How to Repair the Windows Update Files.

1. Go Start > Run.
2. In the box type REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL > Enter.
3. A message saying, "DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded" will appear > OK.
4. Now it is necessary to repeat these steps for each of the following files commands:
Hit Enter after each line

REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL

Once finished; since the temporary folder of Windows Update may be corrupted, please carry out the following steps to rename the folder:

1. Go Start > Run > in the box type cmd > Enter.

Type the following command in the open panel.

net stop WuAuServ

(Please Note: the computer may need to be rebooted before the net stop command will work.)

2. Go Start > Run > type in the box %windir% > Enter.
3. In the opened folder, rename the folder ( by Right clicking) SoftwareDistribution to Sdold.
4. Go Start > Run > type in cmd > Enter. In the open command pane, please type:

net start WuAuServ

Once that?s done, Go Start > All Programs > Windows Updates and see if it will allow the downloading/installation of Windows Updates.
Once this issue is fixed, we will deal with the missing system tray icons problem.

Pre-emptive update:

Ok, just plugged the same peripheral into the back ports again, to check something, and it's now working again,
for no apparent reason. I know it might make this post a little redundant, but I'd like to know if anyone has any
idea what caused this in case it becomes repetitive.

The USB ports at the back of my new computer stopped working recently. I Googled the error code (10) and got this:

A. Click on Start
B. Right Click on My Computer, click on Properties
C.Click on the Hardware tab
D. Click the Device Manager button.
E. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers section.
F. Right-click every device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers node, and then click Uninstall to remove them one at a time.
G. Restart the computer, and allow the computer to reinstall the USB controllers.
H. Plug in the removable USB storage device, and then test to make sure that the issue is resolved.

I’d like to clear some things up before I start.
1) My mouse and keyboard are USB. I therefore suppose that as soon as I uninstall the port they’re attached to they’re going to stop working. I should probably use a PS2 mouse for the operation right?
2) When it says let the computer reinstall the drivers, it should do this automatically right? I don’t need to insert or reinstall from the driver disk?
3) Would anyone have a clue why all my USB ports stopped working at once? They originally threw up a 10 code, but afterwards moved on to a 43. The reason my Mo... Read more

Most likely dust in a port somewhere...a good spraying with a "can of air" into all the usb ports inside and out and a general dusting out of inside usually clears this up.

I changed my CMOS battery and replaced my WiFi card, then booted my computer and got this:

Floppy disk(s) fail (40)

It happens every time I start up now. I can press F1 and it will continue booting. I have a Shuttle AN35 Ultra motherboard with AwardBIOS v6.00PG. I don't have a floppy drive and I don't have it set anywhere in the boot order (it's just HDD-0, then CD-ROM and nothing else).

What in the world did I do?

EDIT: by the way, changing the battery reset all the settings, but I set all of them back again.

Answer:Solved: BIOS Error: Floppy disk(s) fail (40)

Settings in BIOS that might influence this include choosing none for type of floppy drive and disabling the floppy drive controller.

Hi guys a lot of research online brings me here, and I hope this will be the last stop before I put my fist through the screen of my laptop.

So a few days ago my computer can't connect to wireless, stuck in Limited mode. Troubleshoot says - "wireless connection doesn't have a valid ip configuration". i've uninstalled the driver, put valid settings from another laptop I have, I've uninstalled Bonjour, i've put netsh commands.. still nada. The USB connection I could use to tether also stopped working. I've tried other wifi connections and they don't work either. The strangest thing is that itunes won't recognize the phone, but windows does and i can go inside the folders.
I have the 169.254.x.x ipconfig forgot the name but like I've read here before it can't get to DHCP.

The laptop is 6 months old lenovo windows 7.
Would really appreciate some input on what else to try. Thank you!

Ok, trying to help out a friend with a lappy, update hangs with "Windows Modules installer stopped working and was closed" etc etc, I have tried everything I can think of, with no luck. I tired doing a scan with sfc /scannow and it fails at 29% saying "Windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation".

Any ideas or tips? I have tired just about everything I could google on the matter, nothing helpful.

Hi,

I had Windows XP service pack 1 installed and found that I needed to upgrade to sp2 to continue to run AVG's antivirus software as well as other programs.

I first encountered a cryptographic service related error (0x800710D9) when trying to install but managed to solve that. However my next attempt at trying to install the service pack failed. This occured near the end of the install. The message box said that my "Service Pack installation failed" and the error code associated with it was 0xD0000005. While looking through Microsoft's support pages it seemed I had an "access denied" problem and that the permission settings to the registry keys were wrong. I looked in the setupapi.log file to see which keys were affected but didn't have much luck. There was one error code that I did find though. Here are a couple of lines from the log file:

#E077 Could not locate a non-empty section [iis_doc_install] when calculating disk space in "C:\WINDOWS\INF\iis.inf". Error 0xe0000102: The required line was not found in the INF.
#E077 Could not locate a non-empty section [iis_ftp_install] when calculating disk space in "C:\WINDOWS\INF\iis.inf". Error 0xe0000102: The required line was not found in the INF.

Assuming that the installation was a failure I decided to restart my computer and attempt another reinstall in the hope that the problem might not happen again.

When I did this though the computer began to load Windows XP Se... Read more

Gang this is an issue I am stumped on.
At a law office, a lawyer uses Outlook [not Express] 2007 on Win XPP SP3 on a Dell laptop, docked. Recently they moved offices, but the ISP is the same [Centurylink]. The level of service is the same, and sadly his main mail account is with the ISP
Shortly after movein, his account stopped authorizing. I checked it via webmail and everything looked peachy. None of the account settings had changed. It worked one day, next day it didn't and no matter what I tried, it could never get credentialed again. So I setup a "new account" with the same settings [per their website]. It worked. I double checked all settings and they are identical to the failed one.

Fastforward: it happened again. This time, out of desperation, I uninstalled AVG as it has been known to cause this sort of problem via its email scanning function. Double checked my answer with an IT guy nearby and he agreed it was the most likely. Still, the 2nd account then would not login, so once again, I recreated the account. New one worked fine - settings identical to the other 2.

Now it has happened again with one difference: only the login/authorization to the outbound server [smtp] is blocked. Incoming Pop3 works, outgoing is blocked.
The new protection package is AVAST Free.

The system is behind a LAN Router, tied to the DSL modem - a pretty simple rig. 2 other XPP systems in the office have mail accounts on Centurylink and they are ok.

Friend of mine gave me her Acer Aspire 5742z-4813 because it fails to boot and eventually asks to repair, which it doesn't. Can't enter safe-mode, either.

Only thing she's said is that her daughter installed Norton 360 a few days before it crashed.

Things I've tried:

At command prompt, ran the following with no effect: bootrec.exe /FixMbr, bootrec.exe /FixBoot, bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd, chkdsk /f E:, and finally chkskd /f /r /x.

I also entered BIOS and changed HDD mode to IDE from ACHI. No joy.

Thanks in advance, guys.

Error 10107: A system call that should never fail has failed
Winsock Failure.

I have ran across this error twice. And it seems to be a bugger. It will disconnect your computer from the Internet by stopping or blocking the DHCP client or causing a failure in the Windows socket function.

Here is a simple and Low Tech resolution: System Restore.

When I 1st ran across this problem it took me the better half of a day to fix it.
The 2nd time it took me less than 10 minutes.

Restoring your system to an earlier date seems to repair the dis function of the Winsock which will automatically start your DHCP client which allows you to connect to the Internet.

I will say both times I ran across this issue were on Windows Vista. I have not seen this issue on Windows XP or Windows 7.

I hope this post helps anyone that has this issue.
Please note that you should create a system restore point at least once a month, start with the 1st time you turn it on.

Hey guysIve had a quick search on t'internet previously regarding linksys routers and I believe I had this IP problem with the linksys wrt54g.It seems that it's a known linksys problem and there's not too much I can do to fix it - I live in a house with 4 other people and we're now getting a lot of duplicate problems/can't get on the internet quite a bit.So it's all very frustrating. If you've got any ideas how we can fix this that would be great, but as stated I've already looked around without much joy...SO! As an aside how about alternative routers? I hear netgear are recommended, but any particular models? We're on Virgin, so would we need something in particular? I guess not...would need a good signal strength though as the house has 2 stories, and the linksys does a reasonable job of beaming wireless all the way up there - but of course if it's not connecting now it probably has to be get gone.Any advice on this would be most appreciated. Thanks :)

Answer:Linksys router + duplicate ip problem?

I'm not sure what your problem is, but you should be able to give all of the computers connecting to the router fixed IP addresses so that there won't be any conflicts. If addresses are allocated automatically by DHCP, it is possible to put a PC into Standby without it releasing its IP address. If a second PC is booted, the router (being unaware that an address hasn't been released), may give that same address to the second PC. When the first PC resumes from standby, there is an IP address conflict. If the Linksys router performs well "wirelessly" throughout the house, keep it and get the IP addressing sorted out.

Hello, and first of all thanks to whoever you are for taking the time to read this.

I am currently trying to get windows networking to work with an old laptop and have come to several issues. I am running Windows XP Home SP2.

I am able to connect to my network via the wireless connection and ping other computers on the network successfully. However, I can in no fashion connect to other windows machines through explorer.

When I attempt to "View Workgroup Computers" nothing at all is displayed, not even my own computer.

When I get the ipconfig information from the console it reports my node as "Unkown". I have followed several tutorials on how to reset the node of the network connection through the registry and have followed them all, I have always executed the edits and rebooted, however no matter what entries were in the registry my issue remained the same.

When I select the network connection in explorer and view in the left hand tool bar the little snippet of info under "Details" reads Peer-to-Peer, which I assume is the node type, which I have heard can prevent windows networking from operating correctly when enabled.

None of the tutorials I have found so far have been able to help me, perhaps my problem is a little more specific?

Once again, thanks in advance for your help!

I have an Acer Aspire 5102 (5100 series) wich came with Vista Home Basic, I'm pretty unhappy with vista because the drivers for ati x1100 graphics adapter aren't all that grate and overall it makes the laptop slower.

I want to install Windows XP but I don't know what's going to happen with the recovery partition, can it be remade if I delete it, will it do something if I erase Vista and install XP? Can I install XP now and still e able to chose between it and vista at startup, will a bootloader from a linux distribution help see both XP and Vista if XP is installed after Vista and to acomplish this is there a safe Partitioning program that works in vista (like partition magic).

I have recently purchased a new Cisco 1841 Router. I have it setup so that it connects via ADSL to the internet. The computers on my network go through a Server & the the Cisco Router to access the Internet.

All seems to be ok apart from when tryng to logon to hotmail and when running Windows Update.

When running Windows Update an Error 0x800A138F is returned. I thought that the Router may be blocking Port 443 but when I check the Routers 'SDM Default Rules' there alreay is an entry forpremitting any source - any destination - dest:443/tcp.

I have tried bypassing the server and going straight to the Router but I still have the same problem.

Can anyone help me with this as I am quite lost as what to do next.

Hi,

I have a problem with my acer aspire 5102 wlmi laptop. It did have Vista on it but I took it off as it was slowing the laptop down. I reinstalled XP MCE with all the necessary drivers and utilities. However when pressing Fn + F5 I only receive the option to view on external monitor or laptop, not both .

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Thanks in advance.

Whle trying to solve a different problem, I came upon this. I am trying to download a firmware update for my router (Linksys WRT54GS), and got this message when trying to do so. (See attachment) There is a note on their site saying that some of the download files are in Zip format and in order to download them you need a third-party unzipping program "such as Winzip" to unzip the file for download. So I go to this Winzip site and the program is not free. Does this seem odd to anyone? Can I download this file without having to buy Winzip? What do I do when I get the attached sreen?

I am caught in a loop for this critical update. Everytime I start, the Lenovo prompt to update comes up. I execute the drill, the PC is rebooted, and next time up I'm asked to do it again ... and again ... and again. How do I check if the update has been made, and, if not, what's the work-around? Direct to Intel downloads?

Answer:Fail: Intel Management Engine FW Update Utility Critical Update

Welcome to the forum.

I had the same problem with one of my ThinkPads using Lenovo Companion's Systen Update function. I was able to resolve it by downloading the update from Lenovo's website, then applying it manually.

Question: router fail?

is there a way to see if our wi fi router is going bad? it has to reset itself several times a day, disconnecting all of us in the process. even if i manually unplug it every day. i also reset the modem at the same time. though it does not seem to have problems disconnecting. there has not been a software update for it in over a year, and it has the latest software running now. this has been happening for over a month, and we can not think of anything other that the unit going bad.

Hello, I would kindly ask for instructions and the file with which I could reset my old HP 5102 BIOS password. I haven't used it in a couple of years and i can't remember the BIOS password for it. I have read here on the HP Support forum that there is some file which I should put on a USB drive and then my BIOS would be reset, but I do not have the specified file. I've tried taking out the battery but that didn't help at all. Typing in the bypass codes also didn't work, after typing the wrong code 3 times I get an on-screen keyboard. I am posting on the forums because getting a hold of HP Support has been next to impsossible.  I will gladly forward my  F1 boot up screen information to anyone who can help me with this issue. Looking forward to hearing back from someone, Best wishes, Oliver. HP Mini 5102 (CNU026357X)

I can not seem to be able to set up a wifi connection to my acer aspire laptop. I have just switched from a verizon internet card via a usb port to a verizon jetpact. I have installed it on my pc and it works fine. I have tried to install it on my lap top and can not get it to work. If anyone can help me I would be most grateful.

linksys wrt54g v3.1 firmware update will not load.

I unzipped the file, held the reset for 1 minute, unplugged for a minute (and then did some emails - would that be a problem?) then went to admin/firmware, selected the file, clicked "update" the web page, for 20 minutes, read:

This webpage is not available.

The webpage at http://192.168.1.1/upgrade.cgi might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

More information on this error
Below is the original error message

Error 2 (net::ERR_FAILED): Unknown error.

Any advice? They want 30 dollars to help me update this router: I don't have that.

I'm running XP.

Thanks in advance,
SKS

Answer:Solved: router firmware update will not load

Try going to 192.168.1.1 and logging into the router's configuration pages normally. The firmware upgrade page is described on page 41 of this WRT54G User's Guide

Hello.
I have been having a problem updating the firmware on my TRENDnet TEW-432BRP wireless router. When I try to update the firmware by going to the device webpage, I click on 'firmware' and click 'browse' to select the firmware file, the internet browser freezes and crashes. Any Ideas?
Thanks.

Answer:Solved: Router firmware update problem

Doesn't make much sense to me; as soon as you click on 'browse' it really has nothing to do with the router I think.

With your browser if you do File - Open File... - do you get the same crash? If yes you have some general browser problem. If you don't crash this way I have no idea what's going wrong, and would try a different browser.

FWIW I am using the same router and, at the moment, Firefox 10.0 in Windows XP SP3 and have no issues with 'browse' for a file.

I have two Windows 7 64 bit systems that worked perfectly until approx two weeks ago. They started becoming unresponsive to various websites, such as b1015.com (unable to listen live). Both computers then started having problems opening sites through google searches.

Following this, most updates on both computers fail. Downloads from the internet fail. Updating flash on one - failed. downloading .net framework update - failed.

One computer has MSE - updated and ran scan - no threats found
One computer has AVast - updated and ran scan - no threats found

Tried to download malwarebytes on the computer with avast - failed
went to XP station - downloaded to thumb drive and installed from thumb drive and ran  - no threats found

from cmd prompt -  ran sfc /scannow on both computers  -  no problems found

Can anyone give me any ideas of where to go from here to get both of these computers working properly again

Answer:Updates Fail/Downloads Fail/Flash Sites Fail x2 computers

The first place to start is are you getting any error messages when the updates fail? What do the messages state -- for example, do you get any error codes? Please post that information here.

I recently bought a Netgear FVG318 router. It seemed to slow down my network a bit and generally didn't behave perfectly.

I checked its firmware version and saw that it was over a year old. So I downloaded the latest firmware (.bin) file and used the http connection to upload it to the router. About halfway into the update process, the router crashed. I got a "unable to connect" message in my browser window and the router stopped functioning. When I turn the router on, all that happens is that all the green lights flash every five seconds.

There were further problems when I try to reset the router. After I press the reset button, the "Test" light starts blinking as it should, but it never stops. I kept it blinking for over an hour and then manually rebooted it. I get the same behavior as before.

Hello!

I've got laptop Acer Aspire 5102 and microphone built-in the laptop. I run (I'm not sure how it should be in English Windows version because I've got other language) Accessories -> Entertainment -> Sound register. I press red circle and touch microphone by my finger. I definitely hear the sound of this touching repeated in speakers of my laptop, however it is not recorded. I stop recording, move to the beginning, play start and I cannot hear anything.

What should I do to be able to use my microphone properly in Windows XP on my laptop?

Thanks for help in advance !
Greetings !

You're doing all the right things but instead of just tapping the mic, I suggest you try sitting beside a radio or othe rmusical output and then repeat the experiment. If you still don't hear anything afterwards, post back as to whether or not the system invites you to save the file when you close the utility. I just tried this on my old Toshiba with built-in mic and it worked for me.

Today, my internet suddenly died. I tried resetting the adapter, releasing/renewing, flushdns, etc. Nothing worked. So I removed my router (wired, not wireless) and connected directly to my modem. Suddenly the internet worked fine. But if I connect the router back up, it stops working again and tells me there may be a problem with my domain name server when trying to fix the problem.

This is obviously something with my router since it works if I remove the router. And since I didn't touch the router when it stopped working, I'm wondering if the router could be dead? All lights seem to work normally and it connects locally with the router, but not to the internet. I've tried turning it off and on. I've tried resetting to factory defaults. There aren't any drivers/firmware to update.

The router is an Xterasys XR-1105+ router and I'm running Vista.

I cannot ping anything except myself (not even using a site's IP) when the router is connected. My router status when connecting in the browser shows DHCP under claiming and does not list any IP/Gateway/DNS/etc information. However, that info shows when checking ipconfig /all.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm betting the router has some problem and needs replaced, but thought I'd see if anyone else has ideas. Thanks.

Hi,

I am using Mindows XP - SP2 and Router: Netgear: RP614v3

Unfortunately certain aspects of my internet will randomly stop working. By turning the power off on the router and then turning it back on these things will start working again. They may then stop working again 5 minutes later or work fine for a day.

Symptons:
Viewing websites always works fine but the following things tend to stop working:

Uploading by FTP to my website using any FTP program
Checking email through Outlook express.
Secure log in pages on websites

By resetting the router (turning it off and on) they start working again.

I use Outpost firewall and as far as I know it is configured correctly - the problem still occurred using different firewalls.

Any Ideas??

As above, I have a duplicate entry for Twitter in my apps section. I've tried reinstalling to no avail. Anyone else have this problem?
On a completely different note, have they removed the wordflow feature on the keyboard? I can't seem to get it to work.

On a completely different note, have they removed the wordflow feature on the keyboard? I can't seem to get it to work. you've finished updating your phone? Check for updates again. Word flow is working unless something went wrong in your install
Do a soft reset to possibly get rid of the duplicate entry (long press volume down and power buttons until the phone vibrates and starts)
