\\server is not accessible. You might not have permission to use etc etc

Question: \\server is not accessible. You might not have permission to use etc etc

I run a windows 2003 server. I have about 10 computers connected to the network. Everything was working great, until I took a vacation. When I came back one of the computers could not connect to the network. Everytime I try to go to the network I get the message "\\servername is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions." I have not changed anything with the server. I have tried disabling the firewall on the computer that cannot connect. I reformatted the computer and the message still appears. Does anyone have any ideas?

Preferred Solution: \\server is not accessible. You might not have permission to use etc etc

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: \\server is not accessible. You might not have permission to use etc etc

It may have been dropped from the domain, happens from time to time. Try removing it from the domain and readding it.

I now get this error message trying to access network resources from a laptop that used to work just fine. My wife's similarly configured laptop continues to work fine. I regularly share drives and printers across all machines and all appear to work except for this laptop. I have found that I can pring the other computers without issue if I use the ip address and can "net use" the drives directly by specifying the ip address rather than the computer name. However, any attempt to use the computer name fails (as above or as a "System error 53 has occurred" in a command prompt). Using the [email protected] solves part of the problem but I cannot find a similar [email protected] workaround to get to my network printer successfully.

All computers are running XP professional. I have tried disabling firewalls. The laptop is a work-configured laptop (as is my wife's) and works fine connected to all manner of networks. As I mentioned, this machine worked fine a unil I noticed an issue about a month ago. This problem persists through re-boots.

Here is nbtstat -n and ipconfig /all from my laptop. Any and all ideas much appreciated.

Hi, had this problem before and sorted it by downloading a server pack.. but cant find the solution I found before.. had a hard drive go down in each machine.. so ended up doing fresh installs.

Now, trying to get files moved from one to the other.. is impossible again.

its not the firewall, or antivirus.
I went thru all the fixes the last time, hence I know what will cure it.

Like I say, I installed like a server small progs pack.. and that sorted it all out.
Cant find the site I got the fix and download link from.
Anyone know what I'm on about?

[pc name] not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
The specified server cannot perform the requested operation.
Lately we have had problems with all Windows XP pcs not being able to access all the shared folders on one Windows 7 pc on the lan.
It is intermittent. I cannot think of what has changed recently.
It is temporarily fixed by a reboot of the Win7 pc, but since it is a server in an office environment, this can be difficult to do middle of the day.
Turning firewall software off on host and client has no effect.
Network sharing profiles are never changed as issue comes and goes.
Unsharing a folder, and resharing it has no effect.
The Win7 pc does show up as a networked computer and all are in the same workgroup.
All Windows 7 pcs on the lan can access the shared folders when all the XP pcs cannot.
Another Win7 pc on the lan is nearly an identical hardware build with same firewall and never has a problem.

Thanks for your help!

Answer:PC not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network....

You will find that Windows 7 and Vista likes to have common user account on ALL machines. This user account does NOT need to logged into, but, must be on all machines. There also needs to a password on the common account and it MUST also be the same.

Also all in use, user accounts need to be passworded.

Answer:Solved: \\****** is not accessible. You may not have the permission to use this networ

i don't see anything wrong with your stats. routers should be named with the ip 192.168.0.1, but i don't think that's an issue at this point.

since you're hardwired in it doesn't sound like anything with your router or your internet, or your computer.

actually... wait... i missed this. you need to enable your dhcp lease. if needed you should set it up with a manual address making sure you're not taking up someone else's ip address. if that's an issue with your router (which it could be) you may need to change your router settings so it automatically gives ip ad's to computers via dhcp. if everything is enabled and all your settings are correct you may need to just reboot your router, and then when all connections are active, reboot all your computers.

if that's not it, it's probably a vista bug. i've heard about so many people having problems with vista there's a good chance of that.
that would require a repair with the vista boot discs, or a full reinstall. (hoprefully you won't have to go quite that far, since it's a pain in the *you know what*).

My system has 3 computers running Windows XP Professional on a Microsoft Workgroup Network with usernames that DO NOT use passwords. It is used in my home and access is restricted to my family and not the Internet by the personal firewall and router firewalls.

This lack of a user password has caused problems in the past with Task Scheduler not working correctly and I have modified the Registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa to change limitblankpassworduse to "0" instead of "1" to make the scheduler work correctly.

I purchased a new terabyte external hard drive that was pre-formatted as an NTFS single partition to use as a backup drive using Norton Ghost.

I regularly have shared the hard drive on one of my computers with the other two, so I am familiar with sharing and Security rights.

When the new drive was added to the main computer either as a USB attached drive or as an eSATA connection, I could read and write to the drive from the main computer. However, when I marked it as a shared drive with full rights to others, I could see it from my remote networked computer but when accessed I would get the message: "<drive name> is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource"

I have tried many suggestions from the web including the ones from Microsoft support. They include:
Regedit and set limitblankpasswords to zero

Hi,

I'm working on a small network (1 server, 6 workstations, stand-alone, not connected to the main Company Network) "reinstalling" a Workstation. Re-imaging from semi-generic Norton Ghost image (4 of the 6 Workstations run the same programs with different addresses). I then had to reset the IP, the Computer Name, and then the Domain (I did it in that order).

I'm using Windows Server 2003 as the domain controller, and the Workstation is Xp Pro Sp 2.

The Workstation is using the same IP, Name, User as before, and they were working with the server previously (a program had corrupted prompting the reinstall).

The problem is that if I open windows explorer and type in the Workstations IP (\\000.00.0.1) I get access to the computer. But if I go there and type in the Workstations Name (\\Computer01) I get a "you may not have permission to use this network resource" error.

If I go to the work station, and try the same thing except with the Server's IP (\\000.00.0.100) and Name (\\Server01) I get access.

This Workstation controls an I/O device that is used by a program running on the server (most of the time, not while I'm doing the install of course) and the program uses the Workstation's Computer Name to access it.

As far as I can tell all the settings on this Workstation match the 3 that are running the same programs, but I could have missed something.

I'm a bit stumped by this, I don't normally deal with the Server ... Read more

I am trying to set up a FTP server on a spare Windows 8.1 computer in the house to make a external hard drive accessible over the internet remotely. I have followed this tutorial exactly: http://www.avoiderrors.net/how-to-setup-an-ftp-server-in-windows-8/
I can access the server in my Chrome browser here with the local IP address of the computer (ftp://192.168...) and see the files but as soon as I try the public address of the router it will not connect (Chrome says ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED ).
I have tried everything, the firewall of the host computer is off, and the port is forwarded as 21. I also tried this with FileZilla. I set up the FileZilla server on the host machine and setup the client on the other computer. I was able to connect to the
server with the local IP of the computer and access the files, but when trying it with the router's IP again it did the same thing. I have tried everything I can think of...

Any help?

Set up - Simple work domain with SBS 2003 file server running Active directory. XP Pro client fully updated.

XP client has a mapped drive for 1 of the server drives that has several folders with company information. Also running a database application that has a different mapped drive for access to the database.
After 8 hours or so XP client starts getting drive not accessible error messages. This is highly variable timing but the more times the server is accessed generally makes the time shorter but hardly ever before 7 hours have elapsed from either cold boot or log-in.

Researched this earlier this year and (am kicking myself in the a$$) thought I had found a solution but forgot to either print out or bookmark the answer.
I believe there was a limit to the number of connections in the solution that a reg hack changed but I cannot find the blamed thing again.

Anyone have any ideas on this?
I have no problems accessing the mapped drive until this "timeout" occurs and 3 other comps (2 XP Pro and 1 Win 7) in the domain do not have this problem.

You don't have permission to access / on this server.

And I am not sure why. I can access the site when I am on a different network or through a proxy, but not from my home network. Is is possible that I was blocked from this site or something? Is there a way to get around this (other than a proxy)?

Hey everyone,

Thanks for this great website. This will actually be my first post here. I am having issues with my DNS configurations, under the IPV4 properties. I originally had it set to receive the dns server automatically, and now it is constantly changing to receive dns server through a static IP. The static Ip address that keeps getting assigned is 216.146.36.240. I do have internet access, but I my outlook which is setup with a exchange email address is not connecting because of this issue. I noticed that my homepage did change once, but I dont know if it was because of a software that I downloaded or virus related. Honestly, I am not sure what is causing this.

Things that I have already tried:
Booted into safemode and ran rkill followed by malwarebytes and superantispyware.
I didnt know I wasn't supposed to run it on my own, but I ran Combofix (sorry)
I ran Microsoft Security Essentials
I ran from a command line ipconfig /flushdns, and rebooted.

Thanks guys

Answer:DNS server changes to static without permission

I thought it was dyndns.org that was the issue, and i just realized it wasn't.
There is a software called Sendori, I uninstalled it. And that seemed to be the problem.

Dear all:
This question is about giving right permission for users to access a folder, which contains a MS Access file database. In this case, without using MS Access to grant Read/Write rights, I can use Server OS to control user permissions of Read/Write.

However, it has happened a few times that suddenly some of us who have Administrator rights were only able to read the data but not able to alter; in other words, our permission rights have changed from Administrator to limited users. (Admin has both read and write, limited users only have read only).

I checked on the Server end, the permissions (for accessing that folder) are given correctly (assigned within Active Directory).

I was trying to figure out how it happened, and suddenly, I was able to view the database as Admin again.

There seems to be a glitch with my network across MS platform or something... sometimes either I cannot view the computers/shared folders on network, or sometimes I cannot access certain directories with right permissions.

Gladly this does not happen often (like once a month). But still, I would like to fix it. If anyone knows anything about it, please feel free to share your knowledge -)

Thank you~~

Clear the Cookies, etc for whatever web browser you are using. If using any third party security software, make sure that it is not blocking that website. Basic stuff that you need to go and check to make sure that it is not one of those two items causing it.

Hey I am sharing a program on the server and the clients can use it fine but when they click to open a blank diagram which is located inside of the same folder we get an error message stating it cannot find the path to the file. I have changed the security to allow the users to have full controll but it still has the same problem.

Answer:zone alarm alert OE wants server permission?

Yes you do want Outlook Express to act as a server, go into the program window in Zone Alarm and make sure you have four ticks in OE line, have a look in Start Up (RUN>MSCONFIG>STARTUP) and see what you have running this could be causing slow download, but Hotmail is not the speediest.

Ok, I posted earlier that I needed a solution to my problem, well I found one. I got the eval version of windows server 2003 (180 days to use it), my school is looking into purchasing a license as I type this.

Anyway, onto my problem. I have everything set up and running, DHCP server, DNS server, Active Directory, etc. Plus I have all the users created. Everyone can login (I have mandatory profiles set) and do their work and that's fine. However, here's my problem, I created a share directory called "Users", this directory contains all the user folders (by their full name, so "John Smith" for example). I have set the correct permissions and everything (I believe) but people get an error everytime they try and save, something along the lines of permissions not being set or the disk being read only.

Just to be clear, if person X is logged in, and they try and get into person Z's folder they get access denied (and vice versa )

I have each folder set (under the security tab of the properties box) so that "Administrators" and that particular user have FULL access to that folder, it's subfolder, and it's contents (on the advanced tab I have deselected the inherit permissions thing).

So any ideas on why they can't save in their designated folder?

I was trying to download the latest version of UnrealTournament 2004 for my computer and you just get it from the universal site online. Only problem is I can not get there, due to this message, Forbidden:You don't have permission to access /index.php on this server. I have Mozilla Firefox, do you think it's that? Could Windows Vista do that to me? Should I try Internet Explorer? Any suggestions and/or solutions are greatly appreciated.

Answer:You don't have permission to access http://www.wateroz.com/ on this server

Hi Rich,

I receive the same message when I go to the website in VirtualBox. I used to get this error when I set incorrect permissions on my index file with CHMOD. Perhaps the website is being upgraded. This page is particularly odd since it actually loads the domain, yet still gives the error.

I would give it a few days and see if it's up again.

I've set up several users on my W2K server domain controller. I've set up several directories to be shared with 'everyone' on the network. Whenever I attempt to logon a workstaion as one of the users, I am told 'access denied'.

If I am making the resource available to everyone (with full read/write permissions), how can someone be denied access? Am I missing a step here?

The server is W2K Server, and all the workstations are W2K Pro...

Answer:Windows 2000 server permission issue

permissions on a share is a separate set of information than login information. If you share something with everyone, it does not mean that everyone can log into a workstation. They will have to log in as a valid user, then connect to the share from there.

Sorry for the long title. But I really need some help.
Whenever I go in to My Network Places and click View network computers, I get the message saying: "network" is not accessible, you might not have permission to use this network resource. Then under that it says: Network path not found. The other two computers on the network can see each other, and the three tivo's can see each other, all are wireless except for one of the computers. I am using a usb wireless adapter (I have tried two) and I bought a new router (Linksys wrt54g - running in "b" mode.) I still cant access my network so I reformatted my computer and loaded XP home back in, then updated it to SP2, turned off windows firewall (I have zone alarm installed.) That didnt fix it, it is still happening. Also since updating to SP2, I keep getting that little popup from the wireless tray icon that says: "wireless network connection is now connected" every couple of minutes, like it keeps losing its connection and is reconnecting over and over. Can someone please help me? Thanks!

I have just set up a computer with Windows 7, and I'm apparently missing something simple, but I just can't find it.

I installed Windows 7 on the machine and everything works great. I then joined the computer to a 2003 Server domain. Everything still appeared to work fine. However, when I log into the domain on the Windows 7 computer, I don't have the correct permissions on the local machine.

I can access the domain. The login works fine. There are no errors. However, when I try and access anything on the local drive, like explorer.exe, it tells me that I don't have the permissions to access it. I can run some programs, in some directories (like Program Files), but if I try and run anything in the Windows directory, I don't have permission. I can access things on the domain, and I can even use Firefox to view the contents of domain machines, mapped network drives, and even the local C drive. I just cannot run anything that's in the local Windows directory.

I can access the local drive using either the domain administrator account, or the local machine administrator account. However, using either of those accounts, I'm not allowed to change permissions on that folder! I can see that the folder is set as read only, but when I attempt to remove the read-only flag (using either account), it tells me that I don't have permission to do that.

I've also tried to give the domain user administrator permission on the local machine, but that has no effect either. That part really con... Read more

This thread at TechNet seems to relate to your problem. It mentioned something about you need to set the password the same as the Administrator's password of the Windows 2000 system. And also you need to change the NTLM authentication level in Windows 7. Even though you are on server 03 this may still apply.

Hello everyone, I'm new here and I signed up specifically because I was told this place was great for helping people with really intractable problems.

I have a user, Markus, he's an engineer, and he likes folder structures. He's got a nice one set up on my server with very well-defined permissions for several groups for his engineering projects.

His computer: Core 2 Duo machine running Windows Vista, non-SP1.
Server is a Dell PowerEdge running Server 2003 SP2 with all the latest updates.
We are in a Windows 2003 domain which is running pretty smoothly.

Starting a few weeks ago, he has been having problems very sporadically where a file that has has been working with and saving frequently, in a directory he has full permissions to access, refuses to save over its previous incarnation.

To break that down: he'll be in Word, say, and he saves his file every fifteen minutes, and at some point it will refuse to save over the existing copy and it will instead pop up the Save As box. Happens in Word, Illustrator, and Pro-E, so it's not program specific.

It ONLY happens for this user, none of the others. This means to me that it is either user-specific or OS-specific, as he's the only one running Vista, too.

Some of the programs will spit out an oddly-named file (like "a3bdfe8c") before giving the error. I assume that this is because the program is attempting to save the file and then write over the old one, in an attempt to make it an ato... Read more

Wondering if someone can help me out with this.  I have my Windows 7 Enterprise 64 SP1 box on a domain.  Our corporate office setup a 2008 R2 SP1 print server and created a few queues on it.  When I try to go to start and then type in the
\\servername I get
\\servername is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The remote procedure call failed.  When I try to access the same server
from an XP SP3 machine it opens up fine using my same credentials. I have also tried this from another user's machine who has 7 Enterprise x64, whose machine was built differently than mine and I can get to it fine from that system too.  Any ideas what
I am missing here? We run McAfee here and I've tried stopping all the services, and played around with a bunch of other things too, so far to no avail.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:Remote Server Not Accessible - Remote Procedure Call Failed

I can't think of any off hand that would restrict just one resource - that's not to say there aren't though.  Here's what you can do to check the Services:
Note that you must be logged in as a Domain Admin or have Local Admin privileges on the machines.
Start up two instances of services.msc.
On one of them connect to one of the Windows 7 machines that is working properly.  The other leave connected locally.
Now go down the list and make sure the services on your machine match the services on the working machine.  If they don't, change them so that they do.  Pay particular attention to the Server and Workstation services.  Also the Remote Procedure
Call and RPC Endpoint Mapper services.

We resently moved a network drive to another server, but all the links were kept in place (to redirect to the new location) and the logon script was rewritten to reflect the new location. All of our XP stations no trouble at all accessing the drive/folders in their new location, but our NT stations cannot access it at all. During the login, the script maps all the drives except that one, manually mapping the drive doesn't work and trying to link to it doesn't work either.

Does anyone know what would cause the NT stations to not be able to see the network drive in it's new location, but XP stations to see it just fine?

Thank you.

Have looked at the other postings about Windows 7 and "You need permission" - this one seems new. I have a laptop and a desktop both running Windows 7, both part of HOMEGROUP.

The desktop has two hard drives (C and D), both shared with full access to EVERYONE.
I can see both but can only update the D drive on the desktop from the laptop. When I try any update (new folder, copy a new file in, etc.) to the C drive, I get the "You need permission" error.

Have tried turning off sharing then turning back on for the C drive and have compared the sharing between C and D - they appear identical. Snipit of C drive permission attached. Any thoughts or ideas on what else to try would be appreciated.

Answer:You need permission - happening on networked drive that has permission

Rather than sharing form the root of the C: drive you should be sharing from the C:>Users folder instead. This is the default setting for Windows and there are many good reasons for this.

For networked drives that were created under a different User name you would also need to allow for sharing using the "Security" tab of the C: drive. The link below shows you how.

You can also set this drive share up at the C:>Users location if desired.

A wire came loose in my laptop charger so I asked for a replacement, but the supplier was adamant that there was something wrong with the port in my laptop, not the charger (he was wrong), so they took it away to fix. hi all,

I got a couple of Trojans in my external HD and already removed them and now is clean. However all my folders are grayed out, see the photo, and the strange thing is that I can access them on a PC but I can't even see them from a MAC!
The only normal looking folder is due to the fact that I moved some files from the grayed ones into this one after removing the trojans, so this folder is accessible from the MAC, however although I removed the treats, the files remain grayed and non accessible from MAC
the hard drive is clean... so how can I un-gray the folders and return things tonormal?

I am going be moving all the shared folders on my Server 2003 file server to my new Server 2008 VM and want to do it in a way that will allow my clients to be able to access them as if nothing happened. I have been reading about the Windows FSMT (File Server Migration Toolkit) http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=10268 and it will copy over all the permissions and everything but I am not sure how to go about making sure the client will still be able to access the shares especially if they have mapped any of them. If i change the IP and host name of the new machine to the old one after the migration is complete and then shutdown the old server will everything run smoothly? What is the best way to go about doing this?

Answer:Migrate Server 2003 file server shares to new machine (Server 2008)

you can do this or you can change DNS so that the old server name points to the new server IP. You need to turn off StrictNameChecking

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\parameters]
"DisableStrictNameChecking"=dword:00000001

this means that you can name the server what ever you want but if you go to the old host name it will also take you to the new server.

Don't forget this needs to be completed and rolled out after the users log off but before they log back in

As old user move on and new users join make sure that you link them to the share via the new host name so eventually the old host name is fased out and you can remove the above reg key.

First, the important intro: I'm running two Win7 systems: my desktop runs 64bit Win7 Ultimate, the laptop is Win7 64bit home version. Both were clean installs, are routinely scanned for viruses, malware, hardware problems, regularly defragged, etc. I run lean machines; the only TSR (for all you DOS gurus!!) I run is Antivir (running in the background).

The problems

Most of us have seen these error msgs from time to time: "you need permission to perform this action", or "you require permission from the computer's administrator...", and less often "you cannot delete file as it is open in another....".

Every now and then, my computers tell me I cannot rename, delete, move, or open a particular folder or file. The folders//files in question are NOT system, hidden, page, shared, locked, etc. They could be something I've installed yesterday, a game for my wife for example, mp3s, whatever. For the love of Pete I can't figure out WHY this is happening!!!! But wait, there's more! This does NOT occur all of the time, but seems to be a hit and miss event...joy!

Example: A folder contains a bunch of files, plus one or two sub-folders. I click on the folder, tap the delete key, or use the context menu delete command, then one of the above errors pop up. OK, I open the folder, select all, tap the delete key, and poof, everything IS deleted. Back up one level, delete the folder. WTF is going on ? I may have to drill down to the lowest sub-folder l... Another account that my GF uses also has admin rights but she cannot get access to it. The dialog box appears and says "d:\ is not accessible, access is denied".
I have search the web and the forum but can't seem to find anything on this.

Hey guys,

I recently bought a SONY laptop with Windows 8. One day I was installing Shogun 2 Total War when the computer just crashed on me. I performed a system refresh and everything went back to normal except now I cant access my c drive. Additionally I cannot download any files.

This is very annoying as this is a new laptop. I don't think its a virus as I haven't downloaded anything, except updates for games.

I can't perform a system restore as there are no restore points prior to this happening. I have tried changing the permissions but to no avail. It says that both Administrator and System have full permissions but still nothing.

I also can't start in safe mode.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks,

Tom.

Answer:C:\ is not accessible

Hello FolkFanTom,

Your C: drive is the OS installation, right?

I haven't performed a "Refresh" yet... But how I understand it is it doesn't make filesystem changes...

What drive is your Windows installation currently labeled as?

Hi there, I have a customer who has had a problem with the CD/DVD multi-drive. I have installed a new CD/DVD drive but when trying to burn any sort if file i get the dreaded 'D:\is not accessible'......... The drive is set to master and the customer has now tried three different types of discs to no avail, could this be a filters issue, or a registry key? Thank's in advance for any help.

Answer:D:\is not accessible

Very possibly a registry issue.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060If that does`t work then you may want to look at what burning programs are installed. I have seen multiple programs cause similar problems.

I have been using this SSD for almost 2 years now and I couldn't be happier until a couple of days ago, when my computer did not read it when I connected. (I use a Qosmio X70, win 10)
Here's what's happening. When I connect it shows up on the task bar as it's manufacturer's name rather than the name i assigned to it, does not show up in My computer, shows up at "USB mass storage device" in device manager, but does not show up in disk manager and finally it shows up (in it's manufacturer's name again) in "printers and hardware".
If I try to eject it from the task bar, nothing happens, when I remove the cable a message pop's up saying the device was in use by a program.
Furthermore when I try to uninstall it from "device manager" the app freezes and is not responsive.

Is there a way to fix it, I'd rather not lose the files in the SSD, but if it's a must it would be fine; I;d settle for just formatting it and getting it back as it was.

PS I tried to access the SSD on my windows 7, doesn't show up in any way there. Also changed the cable, nothind happened.

Answer:SSD USB 3.0 is not accessible

Sounds like USB adapter problem otherwise it would show up in disk manager, at least as "Raw".
You can try another adapter or to take it out of enclosure and try connect using SATA cables on a desktop computer to make sure it's not due to drive itself.

I have a Dell 4300 (2002) with std equipment 1.70 GHz, 256MB,  Windows XP, DVD-RW drive. My problem is the A drive isn't working anymore.I get the following error msg anytime I try to use it.A: is not accessiblethe floppy disk controller reported an error that is not recognized by the floppy disk driver.I contacted Dell and they gave me a ten step troubleshooting process that didn't work. I'm thinking that maybe I just need a new drive? Thanks for any help you can give me.  [smiley=kiss.gif]

Answer:A:is not accessible

Were you monkeying inside the case prior to this at all? If not, then open it and reseat the power and data cable on the floppy and the floppy connector on the motherboard (the other end of the small data cable). Is the floppy seen in the BIOS? If so, then the floppy is probably history. Has it had a lot of use? A replacement seems like a good plan if the above doesn't work. You could also try deleting the floppy drive from Device Manager and rebooting. Sometimes you get lucky.

Hi Guys, My external hard disk is no longer accessible.I thoght you could be of help.this is the message below."file or directory is corrupted and unreadable".Thats when i try to open it.It is recognised though. What could be the problem and how do i solve it.It is the small type, which can be placed in a laptop(toshiba)Thanks.

Answer:f:\ is not accessible

there is a high possibility that it means what it says.I am posting to bump this for you. The most likely cause is a Close Down Problem. Usually Power removed without a proper lose Down. Sometimes Unplugging the USB while it is Writing, or Scanning, will cause the a similar problem.

Question: F:/ not accessible

I have a HP, Windows 8 operating system. Earlier today I plugged in my USB drive and tried to access something in a specific folder, but everything in that folder was gone, however a few minutes later I was able to open a document in a different folder. Maybe an hour later I plugged my USB back in but could not open the drive on my computer. The name I had given it had been erased; it was only referred to as Removable Disk (F: ).

When I tried to open it, a window opened saying, "You need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it. Do you want to format it now?" I said cancel and another window popped up saying, "F:/ is not accessible. The volume does not contain a recognizable file system. Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and the volume is not corrupted."

Have I lost everything or is there a way to fix this and get everything back? Please help!

Answer:F:/ not accessible

Hi

Its possible that the USB drive letter or recognition is amiss with Windows, this can happen when the portable device is plugged into other devices. So best 1st test is to delete the USB driver reference for this device on your PC and recreate.

To do this, open device manager and then the Universal Serial Bus Controller branch and then note the list, then plug in your device and not the change, it may say Mass Storage Device and right click and uninstall this device, then unplug and replug in your USB Device and the drive should reload the driver again and be accessible

The fix could be to assign a drive letter to the device thats XYZ range, so to do this open Disk Management and with the USB device connected right click and assign a new drive letter and choose in the XYZ range of the alphabet a letter.

If after this it does not help then you could use a data recovery application like Disk Drill and Recuva both free

BUT try the drive association letter first, also if the data recovery apps find data, have the save path as your HDD and to the USB pen as its likely data to be recovered will be written over.

Hi All. I am attempting to help a young friend, living in another town. They frequently use MSN Messenger.....he has tried some things we have suggested, but something is preventing him from using Internet Explorer, therefore he can't access links to online scans such as Trend Micro, etc. A partially run scan from Trend indicated that My Search bar was installed. But this program does not appear under the Add/Remove programs list. He was able to update Spybot and run a scan and clean up a bit. MSN messenger works at times. We both run WinXP Home versions. Previously I had accessed his PC through Remote Access to check things over and it ran fine for a month or so.

I am pretty sure the system has plenty of spyware. He does run Avast antivirus for info purposes. I am afraid if he can't access the Internet I can't give him links for programs/scans to use in order to clean it up. I am wondering if you could offer advice on how we could proceed in helping him.

Thanks in advance.

Question: Not Accessible

Ok, this is gonna be really hard to explain. So, a couple of days ago I had the Blue screen restart problem. I found an XP disc, and tried to repair, but it didn't work. I tried several things, including reinstalling it on another partition/hard drive. This didn't work either, it would either restart if I tried going into safe mode, get past the loading windows screen and present just a black screen, or on my old drive just restart. This was until today when I tried repairing the XP on my D drive, or my second partition so I'm running from there. Now, the files that are located on my C drive under my old thingy is inaccessible, and I'm finding it impossible to get in in anyway, and these files are extremely important. I've also noticed that when I tried redownloading Firefox, it wouldn't work.

Anyone got any idea how I can make these files accessible, or possibly repair my C drive windows using my second partition, and run from my original Windows? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Not Accessible

Hey Gurken,

I am new here myself, but I would like to offer some advice on how you can restate your question. First its important to avoid the words "thingy" and "get in." Those kind of words are not disriptive enough and raise more questions.

Secondly you offer a lot of information, not all of which is usefull. Try to keep the question simple so that the helpers can tackle it one part at a time.

I would suggest you first try to load into the original partition. Tell us the exact steps you used to get in and what exactly XP is telling you. It may be that your computer is not set up correctly to run both partions, Do you get an option to choose which version of windows to boot into at the start?

lets start there and hopefully you get this ironed out soon :)

16GB DDR3 1600Mhz RAM
256 GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD C Drive
1.5 TB Data storage HDD (Seagate Barracuda Green
Windows 7 64 bit SP1 + all updates

My Data drive just started to show a problem. When I open Computer, I see My drives, the C: drive is fine with 181GB free of 238GB. However my E: Drive (Data) HDD just shows a HDD icon and no info and is inaccessible. If I click on it it tells me to format the drive.
In Disk Management, it's displayed as a RAW partition. When it works it shows 851GB free of 1.36 TB

A Hard reset restores the HDD to full functionallity. A soft reset makes it inaccessible again.

I have performed a disk check but to no avail.
I have set the Power management to NEVER turn off the HDD.

I can't see it being a HDD problem because when it's working, it's working well. It just goes offline when I soft reset.
Any ideas?

Hi and welcome

32 bit windows can see 4 gigs but can only access ~3,3gigs. Windows takes half that and puts it in cache to speed up applications launch faster etc.

Its normal, and the way win 7 is supposed to work

I have read other solutions on the forum, but have yet to find one that really works for me. I have booted up in Safe Command System mode and typed Explorer when I get another prompt. This opens Windows 7, and my C drive is accessible and has security info. The problem is, when I simply boot up, C has no security tab and indicates 0 bytes used. Can anyone tell me how to make C accessible in a normal boot up? In other words, making what I see in Safe mode--the security tab and owners and permissions, and access to C available? Thanks for any help you may have.

Answer:C:\is not accessible

try running sfc scan when in safe mode, see if that helps when you boot normally.
you may need to run sfc scan three times.

Some reason when I try to put a game into the computer it saysD:\ is not accessibleThe file or directory is corrupted and unreadableWhen I go to My Computer, the D drive says Sims2EP2_1 which is my sister's game Sims 2 Nightlife and keeps popping up when I put a game in that isn't Sims 2. How do I fix this (my sister always screws things up for me). The only thing that does work for game wise is games that don't need the cds ex. Half-Life 2.

Answer:D:\ Is Not Accessible

When you reboot and go to My Computer does it still say Sims2EP2_1 after the D: drive?

If so, you may have a failing drive.
