Wireless fully works, Ethernet works for network but not for internet

Question: Wireless fully works, Ethernet works for network but not for internet

Hi, I'm a forum virgin so please be gentle with me.

I have a desktop and laptop sharing files and an internet connection via modem to D-Link router setup.

My laptop connects to the network via a Netgear PCMCIA wireless card when mobile and via an ethernet cable when sitting on the desk.

The wireless connection does everything it's supposed to do (network and internet access and sharing).

The ethernet connection only shares files but can not get an internet connection to be established.

I have Norton Internet Security but I think everything's alright with that otherwise I wouldn't be able to connect wirelessly. Correct? Are there different IP setup's for wireless/ethernet.

Why can I 'see' my desktop's files and share the printer via ethernet but I can't establish an internet connection unless I go wireless?

Everything's fine with the desktop.

Sorry for the ramble and thanks in anticipation.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer:Ethernet connection works, Wireless does not. Wireless works for other devices.

Depending on the computer, there are two things I'd suggest you check on:

1.  Some computers (like my told Toshiba), has a slide switch on it, that physically turns off the Wi-Fi.
2.  My newer computer has a key combo that does that.  In this case Fn+F12.

Best of luck.

Firstly: Hello sevenforums!

It seems there are many others with this problem, but none of the solutions seem to work for me, yet.

I have a Motorola sb 5101 cable modem connected to a nameless 10/100mbps Ethernet switch, and then a PC connected with an ethernet cable to the switch and an Apple Airport express station also connected to the switch.

The PC can access the modem homepage at 192.168.100.1, but no internet.
An apple laptop connected with wireless to the airport can connect to the internet just fine (although a bit slow). Disconnecting the airport's ethernet connection and connecting it directly to the Apple laptop displays the same symptoms as the ethernet connected PC (No internet, Modem home page accessable).
Apple laptop connected directly to Modem cannot connect to modem home page or internet. (PC can't reach a direct connection )

The PC has auto IP and DNS turned on (DHCP)

Here is the PC's ipconfig/all dump:

Hi,

I am having a problem where I am unable to connect to the net by ethernet cable but my wireless works. When I tried to repair my 1394 net adapter it says that it cannot be repaired because TCP/IP is not enabled -- it is however checked in the properties.

I have tried the following:
1) Turning the model on/off
2) ipconfig release...renew
3) Checked for viruses/spyware etc.
4) Uninstalled and reinstalled 1394
5) System restore from when it was working (a few days ago)
6) Winsock fix

None of these options has resolved the problem. Any ideas???? Thanks!

I'm sure this has been asked 1000 times but I cannot seem to find my exact issue anywhere. Hopefully this helps myself and anyone who runs into this issue.

To start, I have Windows 7 Professional 64bit. Everything worked 100% fine with absolutly no issue and then.... I moved. Now we have Fios instead of Comcast.

Now to the issue. When I have the ethernet connected I cannot get internet access but I have full network access. I went out and purchased a new wirless card and wirless works just fine. I tested 2 different cables, recrimped both of them and nothing. I have activity on the PC and the Router so I am sure they are good.

I have tried everything I have read online, Updated Realtek Family PCI Ethernet drivers from MSIglobal. Disabled/Enabled. ipconfig /flushdns, /release and /renew. I went as far as Backing up and reformating the Hard Drive and before reinstalling the backup I tested it and nothing. Restored my backup file and yep.. nothing.

Its kind of frustrating. I'm not exactly and expert but i am in no way a novice either. This one has me stumped. Im thinking maybe it is a windows service that is not set to start correctly but I figured I would creat a post while I am at work and maybe have and answer to test before I hunt through the services tonight.

Any advice is greatly appreciated

Thanks

Hello,

My name is Vladan and I have had a problem occur yesterday. My internet stopped working.
I immediately tried my phone's wireless connection and saw that it was working fine, so I tried laptop wireless and it too was working. When I plug in my network cable it stops working.
My ethernet internet connection status shows that Ipv4 and Ipv6 have "no internet accsess". It's not just my laptop's wired internet that stopped working, it's the whole network I have in my apartment consisting of two more computers who also lost their wired-ethernet internet accsess. I suspect something is wrong with my router since it relays my internet but wireless works fine so I'm stumped. When I plug in my cable it shows limited connectivity.

I have tried ipconfig /release - /renew, I have tried netsh winsock reset and netsh int ip reset log.txt
I have tried (netsh winsock reset catalog), also I tried (netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log) and it said the following ::::::
Resetting Interface, OK!
Resetting Neighbor, OK!
Resetting Path, OK!
Resetting , failed.
Accsess is denied.

Resetting, OK!
Restart the computer to complete this action.
::::
I don't know what is this "failed and accsess is denied" but it might be the problem.
I have rebooted my router several times but also with no results. I have checked DHCP settings for both router and laptop adapter and it all checks out. I have check IP filtering and MAC filtering on router and it all look... Read more

Strange issue that just started today. My Ethernet adapter shows unidentified network and none of my apps have internet access, however my web browsers work just fine. I am even making this post from the adapter that supposedly has no access. I have been searching around for a solution, but no problem seems similar to mine. Check out the screenshot below. Last week or so, we had a storm, and devices got unplugged. Internet service was out briefly. Wireless internet came back shortly after, but my desktop and our PS4 both can't connect to the internet via ethernet, and I can't figure out why. I've done the usual stuff: power cycle, tried out other ethernet cords, etc. Comcast has said that it's not on their end, and our wireless signal is fine, so we're clearly getting signal through the modem and out through the router. My desktop is plugged into a different modem, but also won't connect to the one attached to the router. A hard reset of the modem didn't help, whether through the button or through the configuration settings. My desktop is claiming that there's no ethernet cable plugged in, though there definitely is. I'd suspect a broken port if the PS4 weren't having the same issue. I've tried a few things on the desktop, including installing the most recent drivers for the network adapter, rolling back the driver, disabling/renabling, and just deleting it and let it reinstall one on restart, and trying to reset the IP stack. I'm posting links to screenshots of some of the command prompt commands I've tried, and the results. They vary a little bit, I've gone into the registry to enable some permissions after access was denied. Any ideas you can send my way are greatly appreciated.

Hello,

Yesterday, my internet through wireless stopped working all of a sudden. It was working good till I closed my pc and went out for a few hours. When I returned and tried to access, it simply does not connect. I get an error saying "Windows was unable to connect to abcd (router name)". I tried to plug it into the router through ethernet and it works perfectly.

I have tried to uninstall the wireless adapter and the lan adapter as well. I have tried it in safe mode. I have tried to delete the network also but now that left me with inputting the password everytime I want to connect.

I am living in a student accomodation with 6 more people and all of them's is working good. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate Edition on Dell Studio 1555. The router is a Netgear one for the Virgin Media Superhub.

Thanks a lot

I've got a Dell Vostro 1500 notebook running Windows XP SP3 without any major problems. I access the internet using A modem connected to the router for wireless access.

I've recently procured a 100 metre ethernet cable and decided to make use of it, but discovered that I couldn't connect to the internet while I was connected to the router (similar results with connecting directly to the modem itself). I've connected other Laptops to it, and seems to work perfectly, which indicates it's the computer.

What I've tried till now
Opened Device manager and checked if the network adapter was active. It wasn't for some reason, but i've just enabled it and it says that i'm connected but without any result.

I'm not entirely sure what the problem is!

Hoping someone on here can help!

Did your ISP give you this router such as your leasing it etc? If so contact them for a replacement. If you own this router then I'd try factory reset button to set it back to factory default. If that doesn't cure this then buy a new router. They are pretty cheap these days.Your router could have been hacked, the access denied is strange!

I have a linksys wireless cable router with 4 computers hooked to it. I have a cable modem that normally feeds into this router. Tonight for some reason the internet connection only seems to work when it goes directly into a computer. But I can see all the computers over the network and I can move files back and forth. I don't know if this is a comcast problem or not. I called them and they said they couldn't even take my call because of call volume. But I'm on the net now when I bypass the router. Any suggestions on how to trouble shoot this?

Thanks,

Answer:wireless network works, but no internet for desktop

Most likely cause is having ICS enabled. Disable it from any and all connections, reboot and try again.

If that doesn't fix the problem then it's probably your firewall not liking the 192.168.0.x subnet.

I just got a brand new computer with wireless capabilities. After some configuring, i am connected to my home network, but i cant connect to the internet that is set up on the host computer. i have already checked all the settings on my computer, disabled the firewall (because i have windows xp sp2), and reset the router twice. i am just wondering what else could be the problem. could the local area connection have something to do with it? please help.

Answer:Wireless Network Works Fine, But Cant Get On Internet

How did you attempt to hook up so far? Did you try this:

start > control panel > network connections > wireless network setup wizard
~~~~~~
Or this on the host computer:
start > control panel . network connections > setup or change your work or home network setup
Run the wizard, choose "This computer connects directly to the internet. The other computers on my network connect to the internet through this computer"
~~~~~~~~

Wait a minute. Upon rereading your original post, I need to know what you are using a router for. Is it a wireless router? If so, then your new computer is not connecting to the internet through the 'host' computer, but rather through the router.

I shall await your answers.

iPhones, iPad and laptop can all connect through the wireless router but our desktop PC cannot. When diagnosing the problem I get the message "Your computer appears to be correctly configured but the device or resource (DNS server) is not responding" . In addition to other similar threads I've read, our PC cannot find the local printer it is connected to either.

I have:
- recycled the cable modem (Comcast)
- reconfigured the wireless router and restarted
- disabled IPv6
- ensured IPv4 is set to obtain IP address automatically (have also tried specifying DNS address to be the same as the router)
- tried the flushdns, release, renew sequence from a command prompt
- made sure the DNS in ipconfig is the same as the router IP (192.168.1.142 and 192.168.1.1)
- uninstalled McAfee
- turned off Windows firewall
- restarted in safe mode and run Malwarebytes and SpyBot
- turned off all sharing in the advanced sharing settings
- removed programs like Apple's Bonjour that I had read could mess up network settings
- tried to find drivers to reinstall for the NIC card for the LAN (Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Ethernet) but ours appears to be old enough that Broadcom no longer lists the correct driver as an option in their directory

None of this has worked. In the last few weeks, doing a system restore from a previous point worked to fix the problem but when Windows would download updates (12 year old user that forgot to choose not to download updates upon exiting) the problems wou... Read more

Ive got a wireless network setup between my Vista Laptop and XP box via a Netgear DG834PN. The internet is accessible wirelessly from the laptop but I am unable to share files between the two. (I have previously shared files with a friends laptop by simply plugging in the wireless dongle and allowing vista to complete the setup so I assume its an issue with the laptop settings.)

Details below. (dont have much experience with vista sorry)

On the vista Laptop -> Network Sharing Centre ->
*File sharing is ON
*Network discovery is ON
*Network type is PRIVATE NETWORK
*Public folder sharing is ON

When trying to access Network\\Laptop (My laptops name) I can view local files. When trying to access Network\\XPBox I get 'windows cannot access' error.

---

On the XP Box I CAN SEE 'Laptop' under MSHOME (workgroup name same on both computers as suggested somewhere else) but when I attempt to access I receive '\\Laptop not accessible'

---

Hope that's enough detail, im sure im missing some.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Ethernet works but wireless does not

Check.
You have no conflicting wireless managers installed try using only the Windows built in tool
Remove any unneeded wireless networks from your system.
Remove and re add your network back in, ensure all settings are configured correctly. Connect firstly with the cable and note down everything exactly. i.e. SSID, Security type, encryption type, security key.
If it still dosent work look into updating or rolling back the drivers for your wireless card.

Have a brand new W500 and it's working quite well, but there seems to be a problem with establishing a wireless connection on startup.  It tries for a really long time - literally 4 or 5 minutes before telling me it could only get a partial connection.  I then start up Access Connections and tell it to connect and it connects with no difficulty.  Of course, in the meantime, lots of other applications have started up that wanted internet connections and have failed because of the initial connection issue.  It's also annoying to have a really fast startup, but then to have to sit and wait several minutes to start e-mail. I've got the most current drivers, Access Connections, windows updates, etc.  I'm running XP.  Obviously the network connection is fine because I can connect with no problem when Access Connections launches. I've tried stripping out all of the startup commands from startup and the HKLM and HKCU registry entries with the exception of Access Connections.  However, it still sits there and waits for 4 or 5 minutes before Access Connections comes up. Is there some sort of log I can look at to see what's failing with the initial connection and why?  Any other ideas what might be happening? Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Answer:Wireless fails to fully connect on startup, but works fine when I launch Access Connections

Try to remove the Wireless Lan card and reboot your machine. Then check for the latest drivers. Just a thought.

Greetings:

Our home school's having trouble attaching a wireless router to my XP PC's ethernet port.

Our donated vintage Macs and XP machines are tied to the internet via a cable box's wireless router. Works just fine. Now I wish to boost the signal to a building beyond the local area by attaching a wireless router to a Dell 260 running XP. This router's IP is 192.168.11.1 (ON) and 192.168.11.100 (OFF), and I've spent hours with the Connection Wizard thing on XP trying to create a ethernet path to the router but I can't find a configuration that states an ethernet path or channel. The modem lights normally and other machines can pick up and connect with its signal but there's no real transmission, the receiver machines getting:

Firefox can't find the server at http://www.acorn.com.
Check the address for typing errors such as ww.example.com instead of http://www.example.com
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Ironically, the router works just great on the Macs, which has both Airport on to receive signals from a cable TV wireless router and also has its shared Ethernet connection on, and the ethernet side requires no IP configuration like it seems you must on the XP's internet connection page. The router in question just plugs in the Mac and transmits just fine. I... Read more

We are having some concerning issues with our modem. Our wireless works perfectly, all our phones connect as well as our roommate's laptop. Yet, the two devices we have connected to our modem cannot connect to the Internet via ethernet without having to reboot the modem. It's really bizarre.

The computer runs on Windows 7 and the other device is our Xbox One. Both have issues connecting to the Internet without rebooting the modem. It has been weeks of this!

Our Internet is provided by Mediacom in Central Illinois.

We've tried un hooking the ethernet cables, no luck. Switched out the cables, no luck. The only thing that works is rebooting the modem.

Answer:Wireless works, but ethernet doesn't! Help!

It sounds like it maybe an issue with the modem/router , as it happens on two devices with two different cables - that would be my suspicion

Will Mediacom replace the modem for you ?

Once you have rebooted the modem, I assume the devices work fine from then on ?
why are you reconnecting devices to the LAN

Hello,
I'm not sure if this is in the right place but here goes...

Yesterday, the wireless was going slow, so I accessed the router (192.168.0.1)
and changed the WPA Pre-Shared Key to something more complex and difficult to guess.
After that, it would still connect to wireless but it wouldn't load pages quickly, or at all.
Then, it stopped connecting to my wireless network altogether.
I'm writing this post with my Ethernet cable plugged in and it works perfectly fine.

I ran Windows troubleshooter while still able to connect to wireless. Results were that the problem had something to do with the DNS Server. Since then, I've tried winsock fix, flushdns,
ipconfig in cmd, resetting the wireless WPA Pre-Shared Key back to the original, changing the Preferred and Alternate DNS servers, powering off my Thomson router.

I've tried to cmd - ipconfig /release /renew but it says the media is disconnected and it can't
perform that operation.

Any help would be great,
-Scott

How far is the computer from the router? Are there any walls, floors it has to go thru?
Personally, I'd stick with the ethernet.

I had wireless internet with AT&T and everything was fine. Today I switched to Bright House and my laptop will not connect wirelessly to the router. I am able to use the ethernet cord to connect and my mobile devices connect to the wireless network with no problem. Please help ! My computer is an Acer and is operating on Windows 7

Answer:Ethernet works, wireless doesn't

Hey Ashp10. You had AT&T as your ISP, but now you are using Bright House, correct?. Did you have your own router when with AT&T or were you using a combo modem/router provided by them. How about with Bright House, are you using a box provided by them or are you using your own router?.

Hello all, just joined...first post here.

I'm having major network connection issues. This one is baffleing, and that's putting it simple. I'm not computer illiterate by any means and I don't consider myself a newbie either. With that said however, I'm no guru but do know my stuff somewhat.

Here's my dilemna...and I'd like to go ahead and thank you all for you help ahead of time.

I'm running a Windows Vista desktop and laptop. There's internet sharing via Netgear Wireless G router (WGR614) and ISP is Comcast. Wireless seems to be fine however ethernet is acting up.

I'll try simplifying this possibly by listing my observations:

-Wireless is fine.
-Modem to router (via ethernet which is really weird) is fine. Router shows it's receiving a connection and it no doubt is as the router's broadcasting wireless signals...and strong ones at that.
-Laptop and Xbox 360 pick up strong wirless signals extremely well and perform as such. The laptop surfs the net without any latency, same goes for the Xbox 360 online gaming. In games where your connection strength is displayed (Call of Duty 4 multiplayer) the bars are all filled denoting max signal reception.

****Here's where the problem really lies******

-Can't connect desktop or laptop (with wi-fi capability off) via ethernet through any of the router's four LAN ports.
-Can't connect via ethernet DIRECTLY from modem to desktop or laptop.
-In case o... Read more

I have a Lenovo 3000 N200 with Windows XP purchased nine months ago. Both the wireless (Broadcom 802.11g Network Adapter) and ethernet (Broadcom NetLink Fast Ethernet) were working perfectly until two days ago. I have been unable to repair the ethernet. My ISP provider had me check ipconfig/all and concluded that I had a faulty network card, but I wonder if there could be something amiss with the configuration. Please help me out! p.s. I may have been guilty of having both wireless and ethernet enabled at the same time.

Hi, this my first time posting and I really would refrain from bothering people if I could, but I've been having this issue with my wireless for the last month so I thought perhaps someone could help.

The OS is a Windows XP home.

I go into IPCONFIG/ALL and it tells me that my wireless is disconnected

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers.
I've tried going into the router (it's a NETGEAR MR814) IP, and I've added it to the list of devices that can connect to it, but it's not working. It just... won't work. It's not that there's a security lock on my router because I've disabled it and it still wouldn't work.

So now I'm completely befuddled, and disheartened, and on the verge of just taking apart my machine were it not for the ethernet connection. Can someone please help?

Answer:Ethernet works fine, Not Wireless

First try going into network property and see if you can see it.
If you see something like "Local Area connection 2" with wireless network card, right click on the icon and view available network/connection.
If you see your wireless router setting, highlight and click "Connect".

Since changing ISP's my wireless works fine but my ethernet does not. I get Unidentified Network no internet access. I believe this is due to the DHCp or DNS server problems. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi all.
First of all, I want to thank you guys in advance for putting your time and effort to solve my issue. any answer would be grateful to me.

My internet provider is At&t and as I mentioned in the title, wireless internet works perfectly fine, but Ethernet connection doesn't work on my desktop. Currently I am using wireless adapter on my PC, and it works just fine. I tried disabling the wireless connection, resetting the modem, re installing the Ethernet driver and anything I can think of.

The odd thing is that my brother used Ethernet connection just fine with his desktop about three weeks ago, with same router and same cable. So I am assuming that my computer is the one with the problem but I can't figure it out why.

I'm going to try out the different cable tomorrow, but I highly doubt it will fix my problem.

Help me guys. If you need any other information, ask away. I will give it to you as much as I can

Odds are that the NIC has failed.

Another low possibility (in addition to cable and router LAN port) are the PC's firewall or security suite misconfigured or corrupted.

Another thing to try: in Device Manager right click on the ethernet - Properties - Advanced tab - for the 'Speed & Duplex' property try different values beginning with '100 Mbps full duplex' and '10 Mbps full duplex.'

Hi,

Iíve been connecting my laptop (running windows 8.1) to the internet via a wireless router (TP-LINKís TL-WR841N) for quite some time. Now Iím trying to do so via an Ethernet cable connected to the router, but Iíve tried with two different Ethernet cables and neither work. Sometimes the internet connection status will initially say connected, but when I try to access a webpage I get the error ďDNS_PROBE_FINISHED_BAD_CONFIGĒ on chrome, then the connection status changes to limited. I can connect to the internet via Ethernet cable at work.

I used to have a static IP reserved for my laptop, but then removed it to see if that would make the Ethernet connection work (it didnít).

I have also reset the modem, run troubleshooting, reset my laptop numerous times, and run ipconfig release/renew. I also changed the name of the router, then changed it back and re-input the password.

Partway while trying these things my laptop changed from identifying the connection as Wire1 (name of my router), to calling it unidentified network (no internet access). My Lumia 520 windows phone also became unable to connect to the router (it says Wire1 is not responding).

Can anyone help me with solving either of these problems regarding my laptop and phone?

i used to be able to access the internet directly via a direct ethernet connection, but now my only option appears to be the wireless network connection. i don't recall when exactly the local area connection disappeared but the wireless is too slow & unreliable. i really would appreciate any assistance figuring out how to connect to the internet directly again.

Answer:wireless connection works but can not connect via ethernet cable

I have no idea about your level of knowledge but I thought I'd let you know what I would do to investigate the problem....

Right click My Network places from the desktop or go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, Communications, Network Connections.

Here you should see you LAN and Wireless Connections. Make sure the LAN connection is not disabled. Right click, properties, select Internet Protocol in the box and set everything to automatic; obtain IP and DNS automatically, assuming you have a DHCP server on the network. The router perhaps? If not then manually enter the IP, subnet mask (probably 255.255.255.0) and the gateway ip. Set the Primary DNS address to the same as the gateway again, assuming the router is configured to get it's DNS address from your ISP. Click Advanced and set Enable NetBIOS over TCIP in the WINS tab.

Also check in Device Manager that your Network Card (NIC) is available, enabled and working.

Once the ethernet cable is attached, you should at least be able to ipconfig and see the LAN connection. If you can try to ping the router:
ping 192.168.1.1
You should get 4 replies if all is well.
Then try to ping an external address:
ping www.google.co.uk
again, you should 4 replies.

I know this is fairly detailed help but that would be a good start to investigate your issue.

Good luck...

I have an Ideapad U330 that will not get online using ethernet in windows. Before you ask, no it isnt my router. I have a rather strange problem. Although my Ethernet connection functions. It does not show up in the 'Network Connections' window.

This is not a problem when I am connected to a network with DHCP enabled. But I do not use DHCP on my home network, everything is setup as a static IP.

Because this icon is missing I cannot assign a static IP address to my ethernet connection.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled my ethernet card's drivers and it did not help.

The icon used to be there.

There are no updated drivers and I have not installed anything new.

I have run several AV and Anti-spyware programs and nothing has been detected.

I do not want a cmd line work around. I need to have this Icon back.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

PCs generally don't come with wi-fi capabilities unless you purchase them specifically with cards or adapters. Is there any reason you need to use wi-fi instead of Ethernet? The latter is generally a lot faster.

I have been using my ASUS X53E laptop on the WiFi at my university for the past 4 months with no problems connecting to the internet. A few days ago, my internet suddenly started going in and out. It will work alright for about an hour, and then it will stop working completely, even though it says my WiFi connection is still "excellent". However, when I plugged in an ethernet cable, it has been working perfectly with no problems.

Recently I performed a reinstallation of windows on my laptop. Normally I had no problems with the wireless, but after the reinstallation my laptop refuses to acknowledge that there are wireless networks. When I'm not connected to the internet, it asks to connect using a wire connection only.

I have a Dell Inspiron iM101z running Windows 7 Home Premium, and I downloaded all the drivers for what the Dell website told me my laptop model was, a Dell Inspiron 1121. Attached is a picture showing the oddities of my problem. The icon on the taskbar shows that I have to connect with an ethernet cord; no wireless icon is shown.

If I try to unplug the ethernet cable and connect to the internet, I only get the option to do a broadband connection. Also, once I unplug the cable, I get "no connections available."

Answer:Laptop refuses to detect anything wireless, ethernet works fine

Most likely this is still a driver problem.

Hi guys - setting up computers in my new home and have got the wifi working fine with my BT Home Hub router (works for laptops, mobile devices etc)
Have been trying to connect via Ethernet for a laptop and home pc for a faster/more reliable connection but it doesn't seem to be working.

When plugged in the Network and Sharing Centre simply displays the loading blue circle with 'identifying' but no network access. When clicking on the Local Area Connection Status both IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity state no network access, but I can't seem to find any hardware problems on the laptop. The same issue occurs for other laptops at home and I know my laptop works with Ethernet at work.

Running ipconfig/all shows that DHCP is enabled (I checked this on the properties tab for the IPvs), autoconfiguration is enabled. I can add in a copy and paste of the whole ipconfig/all if that's helpful - 'media disconnected' shows for Tunnel adapters but I don't really understand what they are...

If anyone could help at all I'd be really grateful !

go to your router setting page open it (192.168.0.1) check the settings there,
password is probably admin if you havn't changed it, please do change it if you havn't.

Or plan B reset the router

Hi, I have a Y530, just bought less than 1 month.  The wireless works fine, but whenever I plug the ethernet cable in, the comp cannot ID and won't connect.  I tried installing the Broadcom Fast Ethernet from Lenovo drivers and DL page but it didn't work.  I am thinking this has to do with Vista-32 set-up.  Anyway, please help me if you can.  I can use wireless just fine. All settings in the comp is pretty much default.  Thank you.

Answer:Y530 ethernet not working, wireless works, all default setting, help!

1) Are Ethernet drivers installed (no yellow marks in Device Manager)2) Are all settings of "TCP/IP v 4" in prperties of Ethernet card in Networks Manager setto default/automatic?3) Do you have DHCP enabled on your router?  Are other laptops able to connect via that cable?

Hi There,
I recently moved house and got Virgin internet with a new router/modem. I have an oldish laptop whose wireless has always worked. Since setting everything up with the new router the wireless doesn't work. When plugging in the ethernet cable everything is fine. I know it isn't the router as I have a mac and a bunch of iphones and ipads hooked up. I have googled this to death and updated all the drivers of the laptop, restarted the wifi card, updated everything I could on this laptop and I still can't figure out why the wifi wont connect. I hope that you can help. Details are below:

Hello

I've been having internet issues on my HP Pavilion dv9000. The wired connection to my modem comes up as unidentified. This happens spontaneously, either while it's been working or upon log in. I want to fix this problem permanently, if possible. I've tried many solutions to no avail, but I'm thinking if I want this problem fixed, to run through them all again. Open to anything that's had any success rate regarding this problem. Thanks!

I can't get my network card to work when plugged into the wall. The computer detects the card and all but I can't get it to detect the lan cable, and the card doesn't light up. At first I thought maybe the cord port was jacked but I was messing around with it and at one point my laptop and the PC/network card were connected and it lit up. Can't get internet that way of course. I can also get it to work from PC to PS3, I can successfully transfer files through FTP.
What's going on?

By the way I'm at a university. There's no modem or router for me to reset or anything like that. And yes the actual cable works, and so does the walljack I'm connecting from, they both work with my laptop. I've tried plugging and unplugging, using different cables, resetting the cmos, doing a system restore point, uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, no changes. It's a brand new card, and it never worked.

I mean it would be one thing if it at least detected the cable and the internet didn't work, but for it to detect the cable when plugged into anything except the walljack when I know the walljack works, the cable works, and the network card works to at least some extent... I've never had a problem like this before. I could reinstall Windows 7 but, I dunno, I have a feeling that won't work.

No problems are detected in the device manager. ipconfig /all gives me a media disconnected for everything.

I have a Win 7 system. Everything was working, until a few days ago, and then the Ethernet connection stopped. The activity LEDs work, but the Ethernet will not connect. The Wifi works fine through the same router as the Ethernet is plugged into.

Here is what I did so far.Rebooted PC (full power cycle)
Rebooted router
MSCONFIG to disable all unknown services and apps
Replaced Ethernet cable
Tried a different port
Confirmed Ethernet driver is latest version
Deleted Ethernet driver anyway and reinstalled
Reset IP Stack
Set TCP/IPv4 to static IP and defined the DNS server
Confirmed the adapter's advanced settings were correct
Connected to a USB Ethernet adapter that I know works (and has worked before on this PC)

Nothing I did in the above list worked - Ethernet does not connect. The activity LEDs are working. The Network Connections shows a plugged-in Ethernet as an Unidentified Network.

Here is the IPCONFIG/ALL

Hi all!

I have a problem with my university internet. I can connect fine through wireless, no problems at all.
However when I attempt to use my ethernet cable, I have a connection for 5-10 seconds before any webpage I attempt to access is directed to a portal to log in with my university ID and password. Once I do so and the portal has confirmed that I have access (the user/pass has worked), the display page tells me to retry my original URL, however the internet connection does not work and I am not able to access anything. Any help? Thanks!

I have gone to the help center at my school and they were unable to help me

I only have internet access on the computer that is connected to it. The cell phone and laptop don't have internet. After I went to computer Management this image is what turned out. I think this problem started to happen after I tried to download a driver (HS4) and install it from the internet. I connected the Ethernet cable to laptop, but there is only internet in laptop and not in other devices.
How can I solve it?

Answer:Internet only works when connected with Ethernet cable

Hi Emma99, and welcome to TSG.

Were all three devices able to connect to the Internet at the same time at one time at your current location? If so, were there any changes to your networking hardware?

How are you getting your Internet service? Is it your own residential service, at school, at work, etc?

Am I safe to assume that your cell phone and laptop normally use a WiFi connection for Internet access at your location? If so, what kind of WiFi access point is being used at your location? Have you confirmed the WiFi access point is working?

I recently got a new laptop a HP Pavilion x36 13-s108na 13,3" convertible laptop. I returned to university with my laptop and the connection speed using the wi-fi is below 200kb, but when i use an ethernet, the connection speed is normal above 5mb. I have also got Linux (Debian) latest version duel booted and the problem still persists on both operating systems. I think it has something to do with the wireless card which is (Intel(R) Duel Band Wireless-AC 3165). I have also tried it on my desktop which works fine both wireless and ethernet.

This problem only started happening at university, the connection speed was fine before using university internet.

Please can someone help me find the solution, I can't seem to locate the problem.

p.s. if anyone wants me to post any data, please can you also specify how if it's not too much trouble.

So for about 2-3 months I've been running hardwired Ethernet internet instead of wifi. I keep my Dell plugged into my tv. The other day I tried to move it and use wifi in another room but I have no option. When I first started with Windows 10 on release day I was using wifi with no problems and when going the Ethernet route it was always plug n play when you going to wifi vs wired.
1. Even after unplugging the Ethernet cord the symbol doesn't change to a wireless symbol the Ethernet symbol just has a little red box.
2. Tried turning airplane mode on and off as well as full pc reboot
3. Right clicking internet from the bottom right of the screen image and clicking open network and sharing doesn't give any wireless options
4. I've tried troubleshooting also with Ethernet unplugged and no success.
So just to repeat Ethernet works perfectly. Wifi used to work. My roommate who also is running the same version of Dell wifi works perfectly. Same account and everything.
The only thing I can think of is the pc updated one day as I have automatic updates and it wiped the driver maybe. So if anyone has any ideas on what to do.
Thanks

Answer:Only Ethernet Internet works, wifi option not available

Giving this a bump. I really need help. Wifi isn't an option anywhere to turn it on. Its like it disappeared

I have my internet coming from my DSL modem (of course) and running into my wireless router. Once it is in the router I can't get a connection, period. Not even through any of my router's ethernet ports. This wasn't the case until about 3 o'clock yesterday. If I unplug the cable from my wireless router and plug it directly into my computer it runs fine. If I run it through my Micro-Cell tower and into my computer it runs fine. But if I plug it into a router it won't work through Wi-Fi or Ethernet. I have tested the connections of all the ethernet cables I am using. Figuring it had to be a problem with my router (since it was working earlier and the connection only disappears when plugged into it) so I bought another, same problem. What else could it be? PS: I'm using both a MacBook Bro, a PC, a PS3, and a Nintendo 3DS and none get a signal from the wifi. I always keep the PC hardwired through the ethernet ports on the router and use the wireless for everything else. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? It's so frustrating to know that their is a connection, but for some reason it just decides to not work through the router.

Answer:Internet works through Ethernet, until plugged into router?

with the old router - whats the make and model
do a complete power cycle - see below
if that does not work - you could try doing a factory reset on the router - usually a button or hole in the back - and you need to hold in between 10-30seconds

if all that fails
lets see an ipconfig /all from the pc connected by cable to the router and the router connected to the modem - make sure its connected to the correct ports on the router

------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results in a reply here

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here
to do that:

all the text will be highlighted

I use MS Works (8.5) database for my company booking info, and mail merge the database into confirmation letters etc (MS Works word processor).

My office has a few computers networked, and they've all got works 8.5 on them, all of them mail merge without problems - except for my own desktop machine!!

As soon as I select Tools > Mail Merge > Open Data Source I get the error:

'Works cannot open the mail merge list you selected. The file may be damaged, or it may be in a file format that Works does not support.'

Can I stress again - these files work fine on all other machines (all XP), and the message pops up before I even select which file to merge with!!? Literally when I hit the menu item!

I tried uninstalling Works, removing all mention in the registry, and reinstalling - it still does it. The database file and letter files to merge them with are all held on another computer in the office, all computers access them the same way - using the MSHOME network, no workgroup or anything.

Any ideas?? Please help!!

I just tried opening one of the mail-merge letters and linking it to a completely empty database file, saving it and trying that on the problem computer. It still gave the error.

So it's 100% not the contents of any of the database fields that are causing this.

Well, it does when directly jacked into my broadband modem. However, the main pc does not have connectivity when I plug it into my D-Link Wireless router. Weird b/c all other devices work fine and the main pc did too this am. Just all of a sudden nada? Never seen this one before. Any ideas?

Answer:Wireless works, XBOX 360 works, but main pc has no connectivity?

so your PC has no connectivity when plugged in to the router, but all other devices associated to the router do have internet connectivity.
but if you plug your PC directly into the modem, it does work fine.

Correct?

Can you access the router webgui from your PC? Can you ping anything by hostname and/or IP address?

Hi there,

I have had this error for about 1 week after I installed/uninstalled several VPN services.
I have "internet access"  on both Local Area Connection and WIFI but, none of my browsers are
displaying a webpage.  Skype works, TOR works (I am using TOR's default 127.0.0.1:9050 proxy
settings to get online with Chrome).  On Chromes start page it even shows my name as logged into
GMAIL! (before I switched to the TOR proxy settings.)

Here is what I have tried

Flushing the DNS
release/renew ip
reset winsock
disabled/re-enabled both adapters
Unistalled/reinstalled both network adapters
shutoff the firewall
booted into safemode
removed my antivirus

Ran a few scripts

lspfix
winsock repair
windows repair (all-in-one) tweaknow
mini toolbox

Run MBAM scan
and MSE scan

Reset IE to default.
Cleared proxy setings.
Re-installed the adapter client, service and protocols,

This is driving me nuts! Its got to be something easy that I am missing!

Any help would be appreciated!

Before I describe my problem, I want to let you all know that this is my work laptop.  My work IT people have already tried a lot of things such as combofix, malwarebytes, restore points, etc for THREE DAYS.  Therefore, I apologize in advance if the work that they did make it more difficult to fix.  I am coming here as my last resort before they reimage my computer.

At the beginging of this week (2/25), I noticed that I cannot access any website via Chrome.  Chrome shows a circle animiation in the upper left hand corner of the window.  I have no problem in accessing the same website with IE.  One interesting observation is that all icons (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Search, etc) show "color" when I bring up Chrome.  This usually mean that they can access their associated services.  Chrome can still access my gmail setting, including my bookmarks etc.  I looked and did not notice any redirection in my proxy settings.

I contacted my IT guys then an they tried every which way possible to fix my problem.  They noted that Chrome would work in "no sandbox" mode but that's not safe.  They said I had some malware infection and they took care of them.  However, even Malwarebytes show zero infection, Chrome never works.  IE never has any problems.

I hope that I can find some help in this forum.  Here is the DDS log.

My PC with windows 7 is the only computer with issues in the house. Ethernet works perfectly but wifi doesn't even when I don't have the ethernet hooked up. The wifi says it is connected but browsers, steam, and Itunes don't work. I have Bitdefender A/V and already tried uninstalling it, no change. I also uninstalled steam and Itunes with still no change. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for the wireless adapter. I tried looking and I don't recall downloading or installing anything around the time the problem started. Before I try replacing the adapter itself, I was hoping for help here since I saw a very similar problem in another thread.

My computer is connected to another computer in my house, and through that computer I access the internet and a bunch of songs and maps for wc3 that I downloaded. For some reason, I can only access some of the folders occasionally... they just don't appear in "my network places" at random times. Any reason why this would be happening? The folders are configured to be shared with everyone on the network.

k1r1,

You may be suffering from occational interference. If you are using a 2.4ghz model and have a cell phone on the same frequency then, there you are. You may want to try angling the antennas are positionable then try placing them at a 90 degree angle to one another. Might I suggest that you click onto the following link and read to see that you have done all to enable maximum access. http://www.linksys.com/splash/wirelessnotes.asp

Define "just a little Mind you, the bits that stick out are the antenna and they are necessary if you want a decent signal.

There are PCMCIA wifi cards that fit completely in the PCMCIA slot, but you have to use an external antenna

Hi everyone,

I have a Netgear RangeMax Wireless router - with cable connection to my desktop computer - internet is working fine.

My previous laptop (HP pavilion something...) rarely if every dropped out. I just got a new laptop (HP Pavilioin DV6), and am using it in the exact same building. The computer says its connected to the wireless network. The little internet globe is on the two computers.

However quite often, webpages will just not load. They dont come up with error messages - just blank. When I click repair network, it says there is nothing wrong.

Then later it will just work normally.

Any ideas?

Thanks alot

Answer:wireless network works when it wants

I'm going to assume wireless to the desktop.
Some things you can try here, listed in the order you should try them.
For wireless connections, change the channel on the router, I like channels 1, 6, and 11 in the US.
For wireless connections, try moving either the wireless router/AP or the wireless computer. Even a couple of feet will sometimes make a big difference.
Update the network drivers (wired and wireless) on your computer to the latest available.
Update the firmware to the latest version available on the manufacturer's site.
Reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure.

Many times these measures will resolve a lot of intermittent issues.

Hi BC

I am using XP. My wireless network is using the "G Wireless Modem Router3 by Belkin. It is running unsecured.

The network normally runs adequately - there are annoying moments when it just seems to freeze, but 30 seconds later it comes back to life.

Yesterday it was performing as usual (ie adequately). Today I cannot connect to the internet at all, either with IE or Mozilla (my normal browser). When I look at the network status all seems well - it is shown as connected, and the signal strength is "excellent". But the efforts to connect just time out: Mozilla says that "the connection was reset", lets you "try again", but it never connects.

I have AVAST running in fully protected mode. I decided to run Malwarebytes to check for anything unusual. It asked if I wanted to update the virus database - I agreed - it then hung, presumably because it could not make its connection! I ran it again, this time refusing to do the update, and it completed a Quick Scan reporting no problems found.

I disconnected from my network, and connected to a neighbour's unsecured network, and everything worked fine.

I switched my router off and on and tried my network again - same problem.

I tried doing a "repair" on the connection (by right clicking on the taskbar icon) - this operation rarely seems to complete normally on my computer. It frequently times out with a message like "unable to connect", but when you then examine t... Read more

Running a Toshiba Sattelite with XP home and a Belkin ASDL modem with wireless router.About 6 months ago, I set up my wireless router using my laptop. As per instructions, I used a lan wired connection initially, but never managed to set up the wireless network.I can run both the laptop with xp/IE, and a desktop with Ubuntu/EMC2/Firefox successfully on a lan network.I turned off the laptop firewall, relying for the moment on the router's own firewall, and changed the Tools/Internet Options/Connection setting to "Dial whenever a network connection is not present", and opened IE which immediately gives me a connection to the web.(I'm typing this via the lan at present)However, if I remove the lan cable, reboot, switch on my laptop wireless card, and try to open the IE browser, it tries to dial up, and gives me an error window.Right clicking on the wireless icon shows that it is detecting and connected to the correct network, but that's as far as I can get. What am I doing wrong, or have omitted to do ?I've tried setting the connection to "Never dial a connection", but that makes no difference.I've been to Belkin's site, but no specific support for this problem, ditto user manual.I've tried changing channels, as per Belkin's suggestion, but no difference. As we are very isolated here, I wouldn't expect there to be any interference causing the problem, and for the same reason, I'm content to turn off the security settings, but nothing I've tried so far has made any difference.I've r... Just setup wireless network using a linksys package between my home computer and laptop. Both computers are in the same house. My home computer is not wireless and hooks directly to the linksys router, just the laptop is wireless. From the home computer I can see all files on the laptop f, but I cant see any files from the laptop that are on my home computer.

Both computers are on the same workgroup.
I have sharing enabled on both computers and selected folders to share.
Both computers have a slightly different IP address.

There are no problems with the Home Computer. I see and can interact with all files on the laptop. It is the laptop that is giving me problems.

On the laptop when I look in windows explorer and under ENTIRE NETWORK, I do see the work group that I created. Under the workgroup, I do see the home computer. However when I click on it, it wants a password. I never setup any password in my home computer.

Never mind..Issue resolved. Delete this post if you like.

Answer:Onli Internet Explorer WOrks. Nothing Else works

This has to be an internet problem. Check the connections between the computer and your router/modem - make sure they are tight. Check your phone connection between the modem and the wall socket. When you say that various programs don't work what exactly doesn't work? Do they start up okay?

If the connections are okay then try pinging a remote address. Click on "Start|Run" and type "cmd" (enter). In the box that opens type "ping www.microsoft.com" and press enter. If the net is connected you will get 4 results back. If it comes up "Timed Out" then the problem is with your net connection and not the computer.

Also, to find out exactly where the problem lays, in the CMD box type "tracert www.microsoft.com" and press enter. This will tell you how far the signal is getting before it times out. If NOTHING comes up then the problem is between the computer and router. If it gets one result only then the problem is between the router and the internet (which could be an ISP problem).

Hello and hopefully someone can help me out.

I am running a Dell computer using Windows XP. A few days ago my mother-n-law got a virus on our computer by clicking on spam e-mails. I figured out how to get rid of the virus but I think I made something happen where the PC will not connect to the internet. I have it connected to a Netgear Router. Now the Router is fine. I can access the internet off of my laptop with no issues. When I try the PC I can't access the net. When I go to Control Panel - Network Connections - Local Area Connection - Support Tab my computer doesn't have an IP Address. I've tried getting into the Router using 192.168.1.1 but the computer won't let me. I'm not sure where to go from here. I've tried calling Tech Support but they couldn't help me. Hopefully you guys can help me out with this one.

Thank you for your time.

my wireless cable internet stopped working. I didn't mess with the configurations, but I downloaded service pack 2, while it was still working, and now my internet doesn't work.It says it is connected and that the signal strength is excellent, but the internet doesn't work. What can I do? also, when i click on the network, a menu, sort of like the controll panel comes up, saying choose a wireless network- (my network) unsecured wireless net. this network is configured for open acces. info sent over this network may be visible to others. you are currently connected with this network bla bla

also- all the other computers on my wireless router still work except mine.

I just set up a wireless home network -- laptop (XP), desktop (98se), printer (wired to desktop with wireless to the laptop), router (Belkin make), and cable connection.

Everything worked fine until I tweaked some of the security settings. Both pcs can still access the internet through the router, but the network is gone -- the pcs can't see each other, the printer can't find a network, and the DHCP client list only sees the laptop wireless address. (It used to have addresses for the laptop ethernet connection, the desktop, and printer.) I've tried returning the security settings to the original configuration, but no luck. I don't have any idea what I did wrong.

Any suggestions on what I try next, or do I have to reset the router and start all over again?

I've read several posts here that come close to my issue but don't describe it exactly.

Yesterday on my personal laptop (Dell E1505 running XP SP3), I got a message box saying something about port forwarding and that I wouldn't be able to get to my website, or something like that. Unfortunately, I didn't pay much attention to the message and dismissed it. Now, I can't get to the internet using wireless. Here are some details:
Another laptop connects to my wireless network and the internet just fine
All was working fine on the Dell until I got that message
I've checked the event log and can't find anything relevant around the time of the message
Connecting to the network/internet with ethernet cable works fine.
I'm definitely connected to my wireless network because I was able to open shared files on another PC
Other, likely non-related issues:

I'm having a little problem with the hard drive and will need to run chkdsk
Sometimes I get an error regarding the display adapter driver.
Thanks.

Answer:Solved: Wireless networking works but not internet; wired & wireless from other lapto

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with that see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

Also show ...

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I have just moved to a new town and I have a new modem and I am using my old router. Presently, the internet will work with an ethernet cord plugged into the modem, but I cannot manage to pick up the wireless. I performed a hard reset on the router and redid all of the setup. The computer does not show the network name under the open connection list on my laptop, but my phone does and will not connect. I am running on Windows 7 and using a Netgear WGR614v10 router. Any ideas? I've been fiddling with this thing for hours. Thanks!

Answer:Internet works with LAN, but not wireless

What band is the router's AP broadcasting in? Perhaps it is broadcasting using the 5GHz band and thus why your other device could pick it up but not the laptop. Or vice-versa.

I just setup a wireless USB adapter on my sister's PC. It worked fine, until she rebooted. Now she can't get on the internet.

The wireless signal is excellent at 100%, but browsers aren't connecting.

I looked in Network Connections, and there's 4 networks. 1394 Connections 1-3.
Connections 1 & 2 are doing nothing, but 3 is the one showing the wireless connection (and it looks to be working fine). The fourth network is Local Area Connection, which is doing nothing.

What can I do to fix this?

I hope this is the right forum for this. The loung is for non-computer stuff, so I figured this was the best place for it.

A friend of mine from work is getting a Dell laptop from her father and it's already all set up for wireless internet. He's a truck driver so he gets on the net on the road.

What I'm trying to figure out and can't seem to find any answers on is do you have to subscribe to some kind of wireless internet service provider in order to access the web wirelessly? If so, are there some that are better than others, and if so which ones? Will she be able to find out if her area is covered by a coverage map much like cell providers have in the stores? She lives in the country so I'm wondering what the odds of her being able to access it out there are.

Also, would you recommend a wireless network for two computers in one house, or a regular wired network and why?

Does anyone have any sites they can recommend for equipment needed to network both wirelessly and wired and how to do it?

Thanks for your help.

Answer:Can someone tell me how Wireless Internet works?

I can answer some but not all of your questions. By being wirless ready means no more than that laptop has a network card that passes traffic to an access point or wireless router. Now, with that said, someone has to pay for that A.P. or router that is providing the internet service. That laptop also has to be within the range of that signal. I have not personally tested distances but I think the range of an off the shelf router is anywhere between 100ft and 100meters. Some hotels, airports and businesses like Starbucks coffee with let you slave off thier connection to check email and what not.
There are some wireless services out there that will broadcast high power from one of those 300ft type towers with either a directional antenna or an omnidirectional antenna to maximize a paticular area in the city or county. Those type of services usually need propriatary equipment that has to be supplied by the service provider and paid for by the user. Those type of services will have some type of coverage maps.
Getting back to home use, there are literally thousands and thousands of people who go out and buy wireless routers and broadcast thier service unsecured. I have 6 other wireless routers in my neighborhood alone that I could use. The problem is they are just not educated in wireless security or think that its not worth the effort to get into the router to apply some basic security measures. Bad news for them because either someone is going to use thier broa... Read more

Okay, I've seen this problem a million times while searching, but I've never seen it answered sucessfully. I'm not a tech guy, so please keep that in mind.

We have a Linksys Wireless router which a few PC's and laptops are connected to wirelessly. Only one of them has any problems. It used to work as well, but somewhere along, it got messed up. It is connected to the wireless, has a great connection, and can share with the other computers. However, it gets no internet (Except through an Ethernet cable).

I ran IPCONFIG/ALL and got this:

Host name: DHY7M981
DNS suffix : (none)
Node Type: Hybrid
IP Routing Enabled: No
WINS Proxy Enabled: No

Ethernet Adapter Wireless Network Connection 3:
Connection-Specific DNS Suffix: (none)
Description: NETGEAR WG111v2 54mbps Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter
Physical Address: 00-18-4D-CE-68-E3
Dhcp Enabled: No
IP address: 192.168.1.102
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: (none)

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Media State: Media disconnected
Description: Intel<R> PRO/100 VE Network Connection
Physical Address: 00-13-20-72-E8-F3
I also did PING 4.2.2.1 and failed.

I feel like this is a simple problem and I'm just dumb, so if anyone could help I would be very thankful.

Hi,

A few weeks ago I bought a Linksys Wireless router for my home set up. I have a personal computer in my upstairs bedroom (lets call that PC1) and a sort of "work horse" in a downstairs studio (lets call it PC2), so I thought it'd be good to get a wireless set up so I don't have cables going everywhere.

Both computers are running Windows XP, service pack 3.

I got two USB TP-Link network adapters (one of them is slightly different, one is 54mbps and the other 108mbps, and have slightly different software but otherwise they're they same).

I managed to get internet working perfectly for a while now, and has been working PERFECTLY since, but I just can't figure out this network issue. I don't know a lot of the more complicated computer stuff, but I learn it pretty easily (and boy have a learnt a lot trying to sort out this mess!).

Symptoms:

For the most part, the two computers just won't connect with each other at all. Occassionally, the shared folders will show up under my network places, sometimes the computers will even show under workgroup computers, sometimes NEITHER computer shows up under workgroup computers. 99% of the time, if I click on any share folders, it'll show an error message ending with "The network path was not found". Sometimes there will be like... communication happening one way but not the other (I think it's mostly PC2 being able to access PC1, but PC1 can't get into PC2).

The other... Read more

My computer (Compaq Presario laptop with Intel Celeron CPU, running Windows XP Media Center Version SP 2) was working fine until a few days ago. Then unexpectedly, the internet stopped working. I was still able to see the other computers attached to the wireless network in my home, and I was able to transfer files back and forth to the other computers. However, when I used Internet Explorer, it came back with a message that the page was currently unavailable (I tried several different web pages, all of which I can access from other computers in my home, and received the same message for all pages). I ran AdAware and Hijackthis (I am no expert, but everything appeared normal), but still nothing helped, so I decided to try to re-install the operating system and files. This Compaq computer comes with a recoverable operating system on a separate partition on the drive which I can access using the function key F11 during startup, so I used that key and re-installed the operating system. Unfortunately, I had the same behavior - I can access other computers on my network, but I cannot access the internet. I then used the "PC Recovery Disc Creator" program installed on the computer to create a set of CDs with the operating system on them and then tried using these discs, using the option of formatting the hard drive before installing the operating system. I still have the same problem - I can access and transfer files between computers on my home network, but I cannot acces... Read more

This is a strange problem. I have been using my Toshiba Satellite M45 Notebook (XP Home SP2) for about 3 months using the wireless connection. works fine. I believe the Ethernet wired connection worked when I bought it too but I can't remember.

Recently, I tried to connect to the internet using regular wired Ethernet on my home network using Internet Explorer (IE).

IE will only connect to 2 pages. Google and Toshibadirect.com. Everything else times out.

I tried Mozilla Firefox with the exact same results.

When connected via the wire, I can ping to any web site I want, Yahoo, etc and get a response... but not their website.

Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated!
