Prevent Network from appearing on list

Question: Prevent Network from appearing on list

Hi!

This is my first post here . . . great site!

My neighbor's secured wireless network (and it is certainly NOT on the "preferred" list in my computer) appears ahead of mine whenever I turn my laptop on! (XP) When both networks (mine and my neighbor's) appears on the available networks list, my neighbor's comes up first (I think because the name of his network starts with a "B" and mine starts with a "J") and my computer tries to connect with that one first. Then I always have to open the network box and manually connect to my own secured network.

Is there anyway I can get my computer to just ignore that signal and ONLY connect to my network when I am in my home?

THANK YOU!!!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Okay, usually when you hover over the networks listed and available from the taskbar icon, you get a nice little window with a few helpful tidbits of info for each listed network when you mouse action hover over the names. It tells you the encryption type, and the SSID, plus a few other details.

Well, on my computer, the information is appearing behind the list to where I can't read it. The network list is overlapping on top of the hover info. Talk about annoying. I searched for various things on google, with no luck. I tried:

Windows 7 network list obscuring hover details, and various other combinations to no avail. Anyone here have a clue what might be breaking this? I'd like the hover details to appear properly so I can read it. In the meantime I've installed the free version of Acrylic Wifi to work around the issue. Thanks.

Answer:Wifi Network info/details appearing behind Network List on hover.

The problem must be driver based or an add-on program because I don't get any of that. All I get is the name and whether it's connected or not. Check that your adaptor driver is up to date and/or the program you use to display the data is up to date.

Forgot to mention:
Dell adds "bloatware" to their PCs to "improve the user's experience" so I would check Dell Support for your specific model and look for updates.

So I have this problem that all of a sudden my broadband connections are not appearing in the network list in the taskbar. They used to before, but suddenly they're not. Im using a laptop running Win 7 Ultimate edition.
To connect to the Internet, I have to connect to a wireless modem first, then using a PPPoE connection that requires a username and password. The wireless modem connection icon is appearing, but the PPPoE icon isn't.

Here's some screencaps.

^The connections used to appear here. Now only my wireless modem connection appears here.

^The connections list.

If anyone wants to know, I recently installed Avast antivirus. Dunno if its related in any way. Please help me get those icons back.

Answer:Network connections not appearing in network list in Win 7

Greetings, supersonic_ht, and welcome aboard.

A few quick questions:

Have you tried uninstalling avast! and seeing if your symptoms change?

Do your symptoms change if you boot into Safe Mode with Networking?

And, what device is used for your ethernet connection? Are there any flags for that hardware in Device Manager?

We wanted a pc in the lounge to network for watching films on our TV, but having installed Win XP Pro and as many drivers as possible (graphics, network card - latest available, mouse, keyboard etc) but i'm hitting a problem.

Although the ethernet card appears in the device manager list, There is no available Network Connection.

Whenever i try opening windows firewall i get a message saying the ICS is not running. If i enable it nothing changes. If i then restart i must then enable it again the next time i try and open the firewall.

I have ran the Network wizard and entered all the correct information (name, connection type etc).

The most i know about running a command line command to check the settings is:
ping 127.0.0.1 and that returns 100% of the data
ipconfig /all shows nothing

The computer is a Packard Bell I-Media and is about 6 years old.

Any ideas?

Answer:Network connection not appearing, but ok in device list...?

When you ping 127.0.0.1 all you are doing is pinging your own pc, If you want to ping something ping www.yahoo.com or some web site and find out what that is getting.

The other question I have is did you just re-install or install Windows on your computer?

Some system specs on your computer would be great and also would help to diagnose the problem.

Hi all-

In the last week I have noticed that a mystery phone has been listed in my network devices list.  It was quite clearly not mine.

I immediately recorded its MAC address and tried (with no luck) to get windows to tell me more.  My Asus router did not list the MAC address as connected to my home wifi.  Googling revealed no useful info.
I did not have a password on my login (stoopid) so I applied one and rebooted.

Today, I noticed a similar phone unknown to me, listed in my laptop network device list.  Again, it is quote clearly not mine.  MacAddressLookup org did not have a listing for the MAC address this time.  Windows was unable to give me the serial number, IP address or phone number in either event.

A fresh full scan with a fully updated Avast found nothing.  Spybot S&D is now running.

Needless to say I am concerned.  I don't know if this is some hack attempt or malware.  Could this be just a couple of random phones trying to connect to anything they see.  This seems to be just my laptop.  I have no evidence to suggest my router was accessed.

Thank you for any help & insights anyone can provide!

Cheers-
 Oli

Hmm, I thought Vista came with a program that would allow the sys admin to choose which programs when accessed to not appear on the start menu. I know there are registry edits that accomplish the same thing, but isn't there a program to do this?

I can't locate the shortcut, but the main reason for this is mainly for programs I don't access on a regular basis, such as paint, or notebook.

Thanks for any ideas anyone can give me.

I have an old compaq computer with windows 2000 pro on it. Is there a way to prevent the password log on box from appearing at start up? Use Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe) to Enable Automatic Logon
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To enable automatically logon, do the following: 1. Start Regedt32.exe, and then locate the following registry subkey:

2. Using your account name and password, double-click the DefaultUserName entry, type your user name, and then click OK.
3. Double-click the DefaultPassword entry, type your password, and then click OK.

NOTE: If the DefaultPassword value does not exist, follow these steps:

a. Click Add Value on the Edit menu.
b. In the Value Name box, type DefaultPassword, and then click REG_SZ for the Data Type
c. Type your password in the String box, and then save your changes.
Also, if no DefaultPassword string is specified, Windows automatically changes the value of the AutoAdminLogon key from 1 (true) to 0 (false), which disables the AutoAdminLogon feature.

The only way I can close it is to shut the computer down.
Is there a way to open the panel, manually, if needed, and then close it?
If not, is there a way to prevent the panel from appearing at all?

Thanks for the help.

Would it be possible to prevent appearing running program on System Tray?

Answer:How can i prevent appearing specific icon on System Tray?

Hi shinyjanjan, i'm assuming you're referring to the notification area to the bottom right of your screen?

Yes it is possible to stop icons appearing in there, you need to find out what it is called and disable it on start up, to do this, press the windows key and R together and type "msconfig" without the quotation marks and press enter, go to startup tab and find the program you want to stop then uncheck the tick box next to it, click apply and it'll prompt to restart, go ahead and your icon wont be there anymore.

I was unable to find another thread on this exact problem, so please help me!
Installed Windows 7
Installed latest ATI Catalyst Driver and Restarted
Displays black screen instead of the usual loading graphic screen displayed before log in screen
After automatic log in only the desktop background is displayed.
Log in sound is heard, yet no explorer or desktop icons appear
When prompted with Ctrl Alt Delete a black screen appears and reverts when I press escape
I assume this is a graphics driver problem as when I boot in safe mode and uninstall the ATI drivers for my graphics card, I can start and use Windows as usual yet without Aero effects.
I have tried:
Re-installing ATI drivers
Re-installing Windows 7
Installing previous version of ATI driver
This happened after a re-install of Windows 7, I previously had Windows 7 running on the same system without this problem.

Thank you very much for any help or advice. My system specs are in my profile.

For some odd reason, a process called CTsvcCda.EXE has started appearing in my system's process list. This has never shown up in my process list before in all the years I've been jinking around with this old desktop. Neuber et al suggest it has something to do with Creative Technologies media stuffs, either an MP3 player or something to do with CDs. Don't have an MP3 player, though. I transferred my settings from an old lumia to a new one and some of my email accounts got messed up.
so I deleted the accounts and set them up again.
unfortunately they don't appear in the Apps list, and not all are pinned to the start screen either.
They are working because the ActiveSync settings are imposing a passcode and I can lock my domain accounts.

Hey guys, I'm new here.

I have always had a pretty clean system and never even needed to download hijackthis until today because I had a pesky problem that was annoying me with popup alerts in AntiVir (Vundo...ssttt.dll). So I ran vundofix and a couple other things and it seems to be gone. But now that I've got hijackthis, I noticed something I thought I'd ask about. I see a list of host IP's and banking related sites and such. I have no idea what this is, but I suspected a virus. So I googled and found 9 results, but they were all in German, mostly at the hijackthis.de site. Since my knowledge of germanic languages is "Ja" and "Gutentag", I found no help there, even with the pages badly translated.

So I thought I'd post here, here's the latest log, please let me know what needs to be done.

I recently bought a Philips SHM7110U/10 headset to hopefully get better audio than my laptop's current microphone while recording with Fraps.

Fraps is currently using my laptop's default microphone, which can be changed by setting another microphone to the default. I read several articles on how to do this, but it turns out my headset does not appear on this list, only my laptop's default microphone.

Here is the recording devices list. The microphone seen in the picture is the built in microphone, which is not what I want to use.

Is there any way to fix this problem? I hope I have explained well enough. Thanks for reading.

PS. The headset is analogue if that helps. The site I bought it from can be found here: Buy Philips SHM7110U/10 3.5mm Stereo Overhead PC Headset and Microphone from our Gaming Headsets range - Tesco.com

Answer:Headset's microphone is not appearing on the recording devices list.

You should have more than just the microphone. RIGHT click in an empty area in that panel then LEFT click show disabled and disconnected devices. Does the headset mic show up now? Also does the System Mixer (could be called Stereo Mix) show up? If it does, make that the default recording device then whatever input you have should be heard. The System Mixer (or whatever its called in your PC) is also needed if you want to record streaming audio from the Internet.

Hello

I've had issues with getting a game to work (GTA IV), and, after some research i've found out that probably reinstalling my microsoft.net framework would fix this problem.

Unfortunately, when I enter the windows uninstalling utility (the one in which all programs are listed) there is no framework version on the list!

I believe they were installed along with OS (which is in my case Windows 7).. In fact i'm sure they're installed, since i manually navigated to the folder containing them and noticed all versions from 1.0 to 3.5.

My question is if there exists a way to fully uninstall those packages, so that I will be able to install them again?

Thanks in advance, whitesheep

Is there a way I can permanently prevent this window from appearing, whenever I run Safe Mode? Googling only seems to find me methods on disabling Safe Mode, which is not the point. Thanks!

Answer:Firefox - Prevent "Safe Mode Window" from appearing

Hi! jacknicholson, welcome to 7f

Did some research, and I could not find anything on your subject either.
Best guess is no one at Mozilla ever thought that anyone would need to enter safe mode without making 'some' kind of change.

I even looked in, about:config and could not find any entry that might relate to turning off and/or bypassing that options/dialog box.

Do not know how long it would take to get an answer, but you could always make a bug report at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/

Hi there.

I've searched round and round, tried some freeware that didn't do what it says on the tin. Then thought "Tech Support...!"

I was installing Microsoft Webcam software on Vista (LifeCam 1.4) and it hung up part way through the install. Elements of the software are in place (icons on the desktop, when clicked on, work ... to an extent) but it's not right.

Trouble is, it doesn't appear on the add/remove list in order that it be uninstalled .. and I can't reinstall without uninstalling (says the setup.exe).

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Cheers!

Welcome to Vista Forums.

You might try running a sfc /scannow command to see if it can find and fix any system files that may be causing this. This tutorial will show you how to if needed.

My wife is moving into an apartment complex for school and she has a Brother HL-2270DW printer. Since she only has a laptop and moves around the apartment, I would like to use the wireless on the printer. Unfortunately, the internet for the building is just through wireless APs. I have the printer installed on the network, but my concern is that anyone can just search for network printers and install it. While printing on it won't be useful for them, it could be a good way to waste her paper/toner. Is there a way to prevent users from installing it without being able to change the router settings? I did not see any option in the web configuration. Thanks.

Answer:Prevent printer installation over network

You can require a password to print on some printers, but I doubt the Brother is going to support that. I would look instead at segmenting the wireless network with a bridge and then a router, or both in one using OpenWRT or DD-WRT.
The other option would be to unplug the printer if not needed. I would segment the network just for the added security.

Hello,
we have a network of several Windows XP PCs via a hub. One of the PCs has a modem connected to the internet and the other PCs share the connection. There are a couple of PCs on the network which I want to not be allowed to use the internet, but retain all other network functionality. I thought this would be easy but....

I tried to disallow use of Explorer and Messenger in XP on the machines themselves (Set access to Programs within Add/Remove Programs screen) but Windows won't allow you to do this. I tried to uninstall and/or delete Explorer components (as a last resort) but wasn't allowed to do this. I did manage to uninstall Messenger, and I've restricted the users to Limited priviledges (as opposed to Admin) so they can't reinstall Messenger.

I also tried to look at the network settings of the PC which hosts the internet connection, but I couldn't find a way to restrict internet access to some machines, but not others.

Surely surely there is an easy way to do this within Windows either on the PCs themselves or the internet connection host PC?

Many thanks,
eR

I have two "home office" PC's networked via LAN. However the children's PC uses the same router to access the internet and by default are able to access files on the two office PC's ( because some files are set to sharing). Is there any way I can remove the Childrens PC from the network whilst still giving them acces to the router in order to get on the'net. My biggest concern is security, as much as I have taught them to stay away from file sharing sites I am terrified they will download something that can spread to the (Very Important) office PC's.All P.c's run XP.Cheers in advance.Anthony

Answer:Prevent childrens PC from accessing network.

In the "Properties" of the network adapter in the children's PC, untick (or even Uninstall) "Client for Microsoft Networks". You could also use fixed IP addresses throughout your LAN and configure firewall software in your PCs so that the IP address of the children's PC isn't allowed access.

Hi,I use my own email account (Imap) at work, but I am concerned that the IT team are reading private emails. Is there any way to prevent this?I have ticked the TLS box setting for IMAP/SMTP.I'm not sure if my server supports this, but it still worksUnfortunaly, one of my email accounts wont work if I tick the TLS or SSL box. So does this mean the emails can be read? Is my other account where I have ticked TLS secure? Thanks,Dave.

Answer:Prevent my emails being read on IT network

Are you sending via work's SMTP server or your own ISP's? If it is work's then there may well be log files in which your messages could be read if someone with access to the logs was intent on doing so. With your own ISP's SMTP server (which would probably need to support SMTP Authentication to use with a different internet connection), there shouldn't be a record that work could access. As you're using IMAP with which the messages remain on the mail server, incoming mail shouldn't be accessible by "unwanted guests".

I have a network consisting of a desk-top PC running windows 7, a laptop running windows 7 and a media server / NAS box. All worked fine until a couple of days ago.
The laptop now has problems seeing the media server in explorer. It simply doesn't appear at all, although a 'device' is shown representing the DNLA service running on the server. The problems occur whether I connect using ethernet or wireless. This is odd,
because the desktop has no problems seeing the media server at all.
I have been through the various network settings in windows 7, but nothing has worked so far. In any case, all the settings look correct and are also pretty much identical to those on the desktop.
This got me thinking, so I went back to basics and tried to ping the media server. When I tried 'ping <machine name>', this failed with the message 'ping request could not find host <machine name>.' When I used the media server's IP address,
ping worked fine.  I then found that I could connect to the media server in explorer if I typed in the IP address in the address bar. All this suggests a DNS problem.
I've since tried various combinations of ipconfig /flushdns, ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew etc. but none has fixed the problem.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Answer:NAS not appearing in Network

If you are using route on your network, please reset or update the firmware. DNS is built-in route device.

Meanwhile, you can add IP address with correspoding media name in hosts file for a test.

My rig uses a Centrino Advanced-N 6230 wireless mini half-card. It reports the correct name except within the wireless network list. Instead of 6230 it reports 6320. I searched the registry to see if I could find the error, but nothing found. It's only a nuisance, and a minor one at that. Anyone else seen this? Any way I can correct it? See image below:

Answer:Network card name reporting incorrectly in wireless network list area

Can only suggest you may not be using the latest wireless driver, but if you are, it must be a typo in the signature file written into the card's firmware which can only be changed by the manufacturer and may be noticed by them in the next release.

If its working, I wouldn't loose any sleep over it.

If i hypothetically visit naughty sites can others on my shared network (my network is a wireless router and a bunch of laptops in my families house) find this out?

One person in my family is a real tech-wiz so I am quite concerned that they may know how to find out what sites I visit. I know there is software they can install so I have password protected my computer to prevent this. Are there any other measures I can take so that they cant view the stuff I look at on the internet over the network? Thank you.

For years, my computer (home theater) had no issues connecting to my home network via the onboard ethernet chip (nForce controller).

Now I get the message that the ethernet cable is unplugged. I tried various fixes, but nothing worked, so I disabled the onboard ethernet and installed a PCI wireless card. The wireless card works fine in other computers. For some reason, it cannot find any available networks. Several other computers connect to the same router, so that's not the problem.

Is it possible that my computer has a more general hardware issue, maybe with the motherboard, that prevents it from all network connectivity?

I've even tried reinstalling Windows 7, but I get the same error messages.

Thanks for any help!

Yes it's entirely possible that the board is having problems. Best way to find out is to clear the cmos on the board. After that uninstall any A/V software that could be blocking the connection. Be sure and return bios settings back to normal. Try to connect again using the wired connection, if it was a board problem it should now connect.

Imagine the following situation:

User 1 and 2 are on the network.
User 1 utilizes the network. User 2 then utilizes the network as well, sucking away a great deal of bandwidth (if not all) from User 1.

Is there any way around this? Putting limits?

IIRC QOS packet schedualling is what you want. although thats about all the help i can offer, i dont have this problem anymore, i did years ago when i was on a 10mbit hub

Hi all

i read this article here
How to merge wireless network locations in Windows Vista
it starts :
"It is ususal that every time you connect to a wireless network location the signature is left in windows which makes it easier to connect it next time. But sometimes when you connect manually to the same wireless network again it creates another signature. This results in creation of multiple network profile"

Now-i've the same situation of of multiple network profile (2 3 4 )like in the photo, and my question is- if there is a way to prevent creation of multiple signature/network profile from the first place ?

Answer:prevent creation of multiple network profile

Any idea ???

Hey there.

I returned home yesterday and for some frustrating reason my laptop won't connect to the home wifi that was working fine before I left. My iPad will as will every other laptop/device in the house. I can pick up other routers fine but just not my own.

Also it keeps assuming i want to automatically connect to one 'NETGEAR'.

I'm aware this is a common issue but nothing I've tried has helped so far.

I'm using windows 8.1, I can give more details if needed.

Hi

Our wireless network with a security password is not being recognised in the list of available wireless connections. I can see it in the list of networks in the Control Panel but it is not being listed in the available network list . We can connect directly to the router but there is no security password and I would either
a. like to assign a password to the connection (NetGear) or
b. be able to connect to our original network listed in the control panel.

Thank you for your help.

Answer:Wireles network not appearing

and welcome to the Forum

I moved your post to the Networking Forum . .

When you say "We can connect directly to the router but there is no security password" what exactly do you mean.

Let's take a peek at your network:

First:

Power Cycle everything . . Turn off the Modem, router and all pc's . . turn on the Modem and wait a few minutes for the lights to stabilize . . then turn on the router, then one pc at a time. See if you connect to the internet.

Then:

Remove all the stored wireless network profiles and search for the network again.

How to Remove Stored Wireless Network Profiles for XP, Vista, and Windows 7

Then: check your browser's settings, remove any proxy settings if found here's how.

Then:

with the pc connected to the router, Click on Start . . Run . . type CMD

At the > prompt type type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Come back here and Paste the results in a message.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

then please Download and run this Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector, click the Networks link on the upper left and paste a screen shot of that screen here. Note that this application ... Read more

Hi!

In our company, we are using Windows 7 and my goal is to prevent users (also administrators) of specific workstations from running executables which are located on mapped network drives (servers).

I tried different things (e.g. Software Restriction Policies or Applocker => in both cases I tried the UNC address as well as the drive letter to set up the rules) but nothing worked.

I would really appreciate any suggestions.

Rickson1982, welcome to the windows 7 forum.

As mapped drives are just another letter in the drive listing, I don't believe that you can prevent users, especially administrators from running programs that reside on the mapped drive. If you could then all they would have to do would be to copy the executable to their local drive and run it from there.

Removing administrators rights is a tricky wicket because you might not be able to reverse changes.

you could go to the server where the maps are located and change the permissions on each of the executables.

outside of that, I am not sure why you want to do this.. Take them off the share if that's a problem.

I work for a small phone company. We have about 800 DSL customers. Last night one of our customers got denial of service attacked due to pissing someone off on Xbox Live.

This caused our whole network to crash. We have 200Mb/s from our ISP for our customers and it was maxed out because of it. I isolated the destination address on our network and had the ISP make a rule in our router that took all the traffic sent to that IP address and redirected it to nowhere. This fixed the problem.

So my question is are there any ways to prevent this? Our internet router connected to our ISP is a Cisco 4948E. I read online that Cisco IOS has a few ways to help prevent this? But I am not fluent in Cisco and our router is managed by our ISP so they would be making any changes to the router.

Any ideas on how to prevent this in the future?

I installed many apps locker they all work fine but I can still access apps from the all apps list.

Answer:My apps locker work fine but apps can be accessed from the all apps list, how can I prevent this?

Yes. There is no such thing as a real app locker app in Windows Phones. This is because third party apps are not allowed to interact or interfere with other third party apps due to Windows Phone Sandboxing technology.
If the developer was careful with his app, he or she would have indicated the limitations of the "app locker" he created in the app description. Otherwise, if there is no such disclaimer about the limitations of the app in the app description, the user is encouraged to report the app to Microsoft as a fraudulent or misleading app.

From one of my Windows 10 machines I am unable to access the shared folders on the other. The troubleshooter says "One or more network protocols are missing on this computer" and "Windows Sockets registry entries required for network connectivity are missing." Does anyone have any ideas?

I have run sfc /scannow, but no problems were found. I don't get the problem when sharing in the other direction or when accessing the shared folders on the same machine.

This comes amidst a cluster of sharing-related problems. Before the reboot after which the present problem manifested itself, shares going in the other direction were invisible in the network browser (but could be accessed via the search bar). Also, the machine in question does not appear in the HomeGroup browser even though it is a member of the HomeGroup.

Answer:missing network protocols prevent access to shared folder

Over discussed issue, due to Microsoft in their infinite wisdom thought that networking would be more secure by crippling it, instead of fixing their mistakes. Some have been able to disable SMB 2 & 3 and get it to work again.

So i was at one of my clients the other day and they just have a 1-man IT staff and he doesnt really know a whole lot about networking, just a helpdesk dude.

And he said he was having bandwith issues yet i see employees here with personal laptops streaming video and stuff on the company's network.
He knows its an issue but doesnt know how to prevent it. I suggested Websense to block all streaming, but thats not really in their budget according to him.

They dont have wireless, but whats a good way for them to prevent someone from coming in and hooking up to their network?

They use a Server 2003 Domain (AD/DHCP/DNS).

Answer:Prevent employees from bringing personal laptops and connecting to the network?

i'll let some AD/Domain junkies chime in on the windows/domain front as far as possible ways to control this via group policy, but really the easiest way is to set switchport security(assuming cisco gear) and have pseudo network access control....maybe even shove non-authenticated ports into a gateway-less VLAN....that'd piss em off... >=D

I would like to restrict access to network drives by Windows Search.
When i make a search and select 'Computer', the mapped drives are also taken into account, which i do not want.
Note that i know the content is not being indexed, and i double checked that this is not allowed. however, i don't want that a local search ends up looking on the network for files. Is there a way to avoid this ?
On a similar topic, does one know the registry path for the setting "Don't use the index when searching in file folders for system files" ? This setting makes searching for system files work (nothing else seems to do the trick) and i would like to set it
as default.
thanks in advance bruno

Answer:Prevent Windows search from searching network mapped drives

Hi Bruno, I’m afraid it is hard to rewrite the registry for your setting “ jest don't use the index when searching in file folders for system
files”.

But you can try to these following steps to prevent searching special type of files (*.dll, *.NLS etc. ):

Start-----Control panel-----Indexing Options-----Advanced-----File Types

Hope it will helpful to you.

I need to know if this is a Windows 7 issue...

I am running software which is licensed through my network card ID. I have recently bought a new laptop, running Windows 7 for the first time. Unless there is a network cable plugged in, I have no access at all to my card and so the software does not work.

My card is a Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller. I have read in a couple of places that both Windows 7 and Realtek have introduced "Green" power saving to disable your network card to save power; but so far I have not been able to find settings that can stop this happening.

There is an option to "Allow the computer to switch off this device to save power", but it appears to happen if this is checked or not.

Has anyone else had this issue and is there a solution?
Thank you

Opt-Out Required to Prevent Your Yahoo! Mail Contacts From Being Used for Social Network.

Earlier this week, Yahoo! announced a plan to try to leverage its Yahoo! Mail users' contacts into a social network of friends who will receive your Yahoo! Updates. Once the most visited website in the world, Yahoo! now ranks fourth worldwide, reaching about a quarter of all Internet users each day. Like Google Buzz's ill-fated launch using Gmail contacts, Yahoo! wants to jump start its social networking plans with the hundreds of millions of people who already use its email and messenger services.

Dear Team,

We have two offices at 1 floor. both are connected with uplink of their switch.

We are facing latency or packet drop issue at second office. I am not sure why facing such kind of issues but it may be some packets or request redirected to the firewall. Due to this our switch traffic get jam & we are facing network congestion issue

My concern is only that request will move to the firewall which want internet access, apart from that all LAN traffic will use another gateway to local transfer or communication purpose.

For your kind information I am giving you Network Infra.

1 office :- 40 Users, 1 Firewall, Squid Proxy Server, 3 Switches
2 office :- 20 Users, 2 switches
Up-link from office 1 to Office 2

Is there a way to hide drive letters or otherwise prevent users from disconnecting maped network drives?

I have a network drive mapped to Z:/ and have applications relying on reading and writing data from this server location. I'm looking to either prevent users from disconnecting this mapped drive, or make the drive letter hidden everywhere in XP.
Thanks,
Mike

I have been having issues with my WD MyCloud NAS not showing up under Network on the left navigation pane of File Explorer. I am able to access the NAS by entering the host name (\\WDMYCLOUD) in the address bar in File Explorer. I was able to find a solution that fixes this and makes my NAS appear in Network as expected. The solution involved running Command Prompt as Admin, executing some commands, then restarting the computer.

What I would like to do is automate this process by creating a batch file that will:

Open Command Prompt as AdminAutomatically enter specific commandsClose Command PromptRestart the computer

The problem is I don't know anything about how to code batch files in order to accomplish this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there
I'm not an expert at these things but this should work.

1) open a text file with notepad
2) enter your commands line by line. one command per line
3) save file with suffix .bat or .cmd
4) use file explorer to get to the file.
5) double click on it to see if it works (cmd / bat extensions should be interpreted by Windows as command type of stuff).
6) if it works right mouse vlick against the file in file explorer
7) set send to desktop (create short cut)
8) now you've got a desktop application when you want to run it - just double click the desktop short cut you created.

Note - to run by default in Administrator mode I think in the properties when you create the... Read more

Hi there, I have a Belkin N750DB Wireless Router and for the past year or two I've been noticing a new computer appear on my network called "ROUTER" and I haven't thought too much about it since then. But after reading a news report about how hackers can hack into networks, I thought I should pay more attention to new things, this being one of them. I'll post a picture down below of what I'm seeing on my screen and I just wanted to ask if this kind of thing is common or normal? It shouldn't indicate anything wrong with my network? Thanks for reading and for any help.

If you need any more info, just ask. I've had this router for about 4 years. That extra computer has been there for only about 2 of those years. I have changed some settings on my router in the past to make it stream movies and music from my PC to my PS3. But that's about it.

Hello

I'm a new W8.1 user. Over the past two days two separate unknown network devices have appeared under 'This PC' in Windows Explorer (see screenshot below for the current one, along with its properties window). It appears people are able to access this computer - so a big problem!

As far as I can tell, all my security settings are in place (password on wireless network, all sharing disabled in Network and Sharing Centre, Windows Firewall is active, Windows Media Sharing is off).

Has anyone had this problem as well, or have any advice how to close what I assume is a security loophole?!

Thanks

I've been having a little bit of difficulty reestablishing a wireless network that used to work. Right now, I've been trying to fix one problem at a time, and I've been focusing on the server. My question is, I was wondering what it means when the server is able to ping it's own address as well as it's own computer name, but the computer name does not appear under My Network Places>Entire Network>Microsoft Windows Network>"workgroup name"

Appreciate any help you can offer!

Hi guys,

I'm not even sure if the issue I have is malware, but I don't think it will hurt to at least get your guys opinion on the matter.

It started about 5 or so days ago. So I was playing a video game and I noticed my ping kept fluctuating. Weird, because nobody else in my house was using the internet. I click on network and there's a mobile device that I've not seen before. (Image 1)

I thought a neighbour could be stealing our internet. So I changed the router settings to only allow the mac address of my laptop and my parent's laptop to connect to the wifi. This did not solve the issue - I clicked on network and another mobile device popped up - this time it was a different model with a different mac address.

I then went on task manager and something called 'COM surrogate' was running. I clicked on it and there appeared the mobile device. (Image 2)

In one instance another router seemed to come up. (image 3)

Also, it doesn't appear to matter which laptop I am on (mine or my parents); devices will sporadically appear and disappear on the network.

Action taken: First I did a system restore on my laptop. Then I did full scans on both my and my parent's laptop with windows defender, it came back all clear. I did another scan on both laptops with malwarebytes anti malware, both came back all clear.

I've changed all router passwords and made them all more secure, nothing seems to work.

Currently I... Read more

small network with 8 stations running windows 7 PC ultimate 32-bit. all were fresh installed with BitDefender 2010 antivirus and MS office 2007. 4 brand new laptops + 3 new desktops + older P4 desktop on ethernet (the old one is visible as billing-pc)

most of them are via WIFI-n, one via ethernet. on the network is also mac mini 2010 server running SMB for file sharing services. the server is not showing by default ether.

at some point i began to notice that not all computers are showing under the "network" in windows explorer.
i can easily ping all computers by IP or name without problems. i can always force open the computers shared files.

windows firewall is on on all as standard from installation and has not been touched. IPv6 disabled on all.

i started to mess around in advanced sharing but, none seems to have an effect:

when i force the computer to open \\server it shows in the network browser, but when i refresh the window, it disapears from the main right side window and remains as old link on the left:

mostly 3-4 stations list normally all the time. i've checked ipconfig -all on a visible vs. unvisible computer and that was identical:

C:\Users\bruce>ipconfig -all

I'm a bit concerned, when I go to my network on my PC I see a XT912_Verizon showing up under Phones in my network properties. It has very little info assigned to it, other than a mac address.

My wife and I both have iPhones...any thoughts on where this is coming from? I have WPA2 encryption on our network.

I have noticed on my network screen various unidentified phones appearing, when I have no phone plugged in, at different times, days etc. When I go into the network screen to check it, after a few seconds it tends to disappear (almost as though someone pulled the plug out). Have looked at the properties, there are mac addresses, but they're not traceable.
Does anyone have any idea what this means, I'm a bit worried about fraudsters but don't know who to ask about it?
I'm not an expert on these things, have tried to find out what it could be but I don't really know much about computers.
Would really appreciate advice. Thanks.

Hi
I have a LAN with two computers with Windows 7 SP1 Enterprise, a NAS and a network printer multifunction.
This network is managed by a hardware firewall. The two computers do not have any firewall and antivirus and all network devices have the same workgroup.
On the network window of a computer, all network devices are displayed immediately. While, on the other computer, the computer with Windows 7 immediately appears; however, the other network devices were displayed after a long wait.
Since yesterday, on this computer, only this network devices are not displayed more; while the other computer displays all regularly.
Thanks

I have two devices connected to my home wireless network, my phone and my laptop. Recently my network has disappeared from the laptop's list of networks. This did not happen with my phone, which works fine. By disappeared I mean my home network cannot be discovered by my laptop. This is not a connection issue because I cannot find the network to connect to. I do not have this problem with any other wireless network. I followed the various command prompts suggested by Microsoft's troubleshooting guide (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...nection-issues). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
