I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've been having some browser trouble that I can't figure out. After a while of being online, I suddenly am unable to browse websites.

Firefox 3.5 seems to get stuck in offline mode, and eventually just tells me it is unable to connect to the website. IE 7 gives a similar response.

The thing is that I can still use Windows Live Messenger, any downloads I am running are still working, and I don't get disconnected from any games online.

I've tried pinging various websites when it does lock up and I receive normal responses. I've tried updating my network drivers with no luck, and ran a few virus scans but haven't found anything. The only thing that fixes the problem is to reboot the computer.
I'm currently running Windows Vista Ultimate SP2.

Hello.

In an attempt to solve, rather than rebuild this computer I have joined your wonderful website.

Firstly I must explain that I have followed similar threads on your site and acted on their advice before joining you and reading your pinned New Member threads.   Hence I have tried to use some of the tools already mentioned including ComboFix (which wouldn't run).  Please excuse my leaping into hot oil before looking.

With that in mind can I explain what is going on with this laptop and what has been done so far.

It is a Dell Inspiron N5110 running Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1.  4.00Gb RAM.  It had been protected using Microsoft Security Essentials which has been uninstalled at some point whilst investigating this problem.

I was initially asked to investigate why the machine had stopped browsing the internet, saying that it was 'Unable to connect'.  Opening a command prompt I could see that it was connected to the wireless network and had IP addresses etc.  It could also successfully ping www.google.com, ibm.com, bbc.co.uk etc.

I connected to the router using a LAN cable just in case it was a wireless driver issue.  Still unable to browse but can ping.

Ran iexplore -extoff  from a command prompt to turn off the extensions.  Still unable to browse.

Downloaded the Firefox 37.0.1 installer using another computer, copied it using a USB key and installed it. ... Read more

But not able to browse through IE, Firefox or Chrome..

Really tried everything - typing this on another laptop connected to the same network.

Pls help

Answer:Able to ping www.google.com but unable to browse through any browser

What is, or who is, your internet security program ... Norton McCrapie are very good at blocking access to the Tinternet.

Are you getting any Network Errors such as 2, 102, 104, and 105 ?

Malware is a frequently culprit for blocking access. Error 124?

I recently bought a netgear WGT624 wireless router to allow my desktop and laptop to share an internet connection. After much work, I have this problem: when connected to the router (with a cable) the desktop can ping websites but cannot browse them. In addition, it can receive E-mail but cannot send it (using Outlook Express). It works fine when connected directly to my DSL modem. The laptop has no problem browsing the net, either when connected directly by cable to the router or when using the wireless function. Both computers use Windows XP. My modem is a sprint 645 series DSL modem. I've spent hours on the phone with both Netgear and Sprint. I never was able to communicate directly with the router using my desktop to set it up. I eventually hooked my laptop up to it directly to set it up (following the phone directions of the Netgear technician). They first said that it was a problem with the modem, so I called sprint. Sprint walked me through the modem settings and said that it was fine and had the same settings that they use for their routers. They said to tell Netgear that the modem is bridged and so should be no problem. That is when I called Netgear back and they walked me through setting up the router from the laptop. At that point they said that it was a problem with my browser on the desktop and they could not help me. I've tried using my Windows XP cd to remove and then restore IE, but that doesn't seem to help. Since the laptop seems to work fine,... Read more

Answer:[HELP]cannot browse internet and ping

Hello vodevil and welcome to Seven Forums.

I had a similar situation last year. Look through this previous thread and try resetting your winsock protocol. Per Microsoft, this protocol is used by Windows to communicate with other computers and to access resources on the Internet, such as e-mail and Web sites. You could also try flushing your DNS cache as suggested by Forum member Jacee. Ultimately I had to get a different brand DSL modem to correct the problem because my older modem wasn't 100% Windows 7 compatible.

Answer:Can ping internet but not browse

I honestly think you have a hijacker virus.. this is the classic signs of one. Go onto download.com and download Spybot - Search and Destroy and install it onto your machine (you can grab it from another computer and put it on a flash drive?)Install it and if there is something on your system causing this, it will find it.

In the middle of casually reading blogs, both Chrome and IE refused to let me browse pages. It was a completely normal session. Since then, I've tried multiple networks and both wired and wireless connections, and I still can't browse the internet (except for in Safe Mode with Networking.)

Random details:
In the Command Prompt, I can ping outside websites just fine. I can also ping my router and get a response.POP3 (or SMTP?) seems to also work just fine, as the Gmail browser for my Google Sidebar loads new emails just fineInternet browsing in Chrome and IE works fine in Safe Mode With NetworkingInternet browsing works fine for about 1-2 minutes while Vista is still loading from a restart, but stops shortly thereafterOnce internet browsing ceases to work, I cannot log into my router through a web browser (although it will respond to pings)Disabling all programs in my Startup queue through msconfig doesn't workUsing a wired connection doesn't workBoth my girlfriend's internet connection and my apartment's internet connection don't workDoing a DNS flush or an ipconfig renew/release doesn't workRecent virus scans with my copy of Trend Micro and Trend Micro House Call online turned up nothing

Here's my situation: when I turned on my computer today, the Internet stopped working in Windows Vista 64-bit. I am able to ping web servers in cmd, but my internet browsers can't access any web sites. The Internet works fine in Windows XP on the same machine. Diagnose and repair doesn't help at all in Vista. The network connection seems fine. I can view computers in the workgroup and I can still access servers with telnet. However, when I go to help->troubleshooting->connect to the internet->click to open the connect to the internet wizard, it says I am already connected to the internet. I then am shown options to "browse the internet now" and "set up a new connection anyway". When I select "browse the internet now", Internet Explorer opens and shows "detecting proxy settings" in the status bar for a few seconds, and then web browsing surprisingly works again, but only in that IE window. If I open another IE window, the internet won't work in the new window, but it will still work in the previous one. This doesn't help any of my internet-using programs. Whenever I close various internet browsers normally (just pressing close), it displays an error message with the options of "check online for a solution" and "close the program". So, does anyone know why the Internet isn't working in Vista and how I can fix it? Thanks for reading.

My friends office is having a strange problem. When they attempt to open a second IE 7 session, the browser will sit at the loading page. The other IE session will be fully functional, but this one won't work. I can ping out, and browse with the other session. I thought it was only on one computer, but the problem is the entire office. They are connected wireless to their AP. I swapped the AP and they are still experiencing the problem.

Opening a new tab works fine too. I know the short term solution is just to open new tabs and not new windows, but I'd like to fix this for them. The new window will show in the task bar, "Opening 74.x.x.x", the IP for google.com. Ideas?

William

Answer:Internet won't browse in second session, but I can ping out

That sounds strange indeed! Try disabling all add-ins or running the browswer in safe mode to see if the problem persists.

Hi everyone first post here, be gentle!

I'm posting here because I am at my wit's end. I consider myself a little tech savvy but am no means a professional. Here's the story:

My girlfriend has been using her laptop to wirelessly connect to my router for about 3.5 years. Upon returning from a vacation about 5 days ago the laptop would connect to the router it would show a strong signal but pages would not load. Sometimes they would load halfway and then time out.

I am able to ping my router, and external sites with no issues by name and ip address.

What still works:
The laptop can connect to other routers with no problem.
Other wireless devices can connect to my router with no problem.
The laptop can use a wired connection with my router with no problem.

What does not work:
The laptop and my router wirelessly.

Things I've tried:
Power cycling all components multiple times.
Complete malware/virus scans
Now disabled all firewalls, Antivirus, and wireless security
Updated to latest Wireless NIC drivers and Router firmware
System restore to previous known working timepoint with no effect
Resetting router to factory settings.

Googling revealed possible issues:

I have followed this guide: How to Troubleshoot Black Hole Router Issues in the microsoft knowledge base (sorry cant post links)

Every time I start up my computer (Asus laptop, Windows 7) the internet works perfectly for quite a while (hours), But eventually my browser stops working, I can still ping various web site, use teamspeak, ect. But no browser works (104 error). Restarting fixes it, buy that's a temporary solution and a hassle

I've been reading threads for hours and I've found tons of similar stuff, but nothings worked so far. I tried some of the trouble shooting options, none of them worked but they did tell me my dns server wasn't responding

Every other laptop and phone on the network continues to work fine

Things I've tried:
Dns flush
Power management settings for the adapters in device manager
Setting opendns as preferred in Ipv4 properties
All the trouble shooting options
Ip release/ renew (didn't work, said media d/c'ed)
Rollback/ update network adapter drivers

And some other stuff that I'm forgetting (this has been happening for months)

My nephew just moved in with us and is going to take online high school classes, but his computer is messed up. Need it working ASAP.
In "normal windows xp mode" it will ping websites such as yahoo.com as well as ping IP addresses but it wont browse the internet. It does browse just fine in safe mode with networking.

The problem started when we were trying to fix his magicjack. We uninstalled SP3 and magicjack works perfectly now (just cant browse with any web browser). I can get into his shared file through the network. The computer is wired to the Netgear router. He is running Norton 360 (which we have tried uninstalling an reinstalling with no luck). I have checked and rechecked his network settings, TCPIP settings and internet settings. I have tried the winsock fix as well with no differences.

Please help.
Thanks for reading.

My husband & I try to remotely support his father's HP desktop. In the last month or so he can get email, TeamViewer for remote access works fine we can ping websites by name and IP but cannot browse to them by name or IP. We have done all the things recommended on MS site for Fix Network Connection (Fix network connection issues - Windows Help
) but nothing has worked so far.

We have reset router and cable modem, verified network drivers, flushed DNS, verified browser DNS settings. This computer is hardwired, other computer on wifi on same network works fine.

We are 5 hours away. We made a generic "recovery drive" on a flash drive and sent it to him but usb keyboard and mouse won't work for him to use that option. Tried ps2 mouse, won't work. We don't know where to go next. Keep in mind, my FIL is 88 years old so help from his end is negligible at best.

Initially ran Network troubleshooter few times with no errors found. Now it gives Missing Protocol, says it fixes it, but doesn't.

Answer:Unable to browse internet after SP2

Do you have a firewall installed? It may be blocking internet access and need to be configured. SP2 enables the built in firewall by default which may be conflicting with a one you already had installed.

I have also tried accessing Safari, error reads 'unknown error (kCFErrorDomainWinSock:10054), and also windows explorer, which has no error code. Hi everyone...My normal computer has a problem!I am unable to browse any websites from internet explorer. I get the 'page cannot be found' error message for whatever site I try to go to. I can access the rest of my home network and I can ping my router successfuly.I have recently had some virus and spyware activity on the computer which I cleaned with PC Cillin, Ad-Aware and HijackThis. Just before the current problem I had a blank icon (grey space) in the task bar system tray. When I hovered the mouse over it a box said something like 'asterix system tray icon...right click me'. Right clicking did nothing. I got rid of this by removing what looked like dodgy registry settings in HijackThis. So I don't know if I deleted anything important to internet explorer in the registry or if this is coincidence. Unfortunately I did not take notes during the process. Most things like this turn up a search on google but this one has me miffed.I have uninstalled internet explorer (v6) and reinstalled from the disk (v5) and it still doesn't work. Next step, failing a solution will be to format and reinstall :(Is anybody able to offer some info? Or possibly point me to a registry fixer? Many Thanks.

would the free registry cleaner advertised at the bottom of the page be of any use?johnny.

Hey Guys,
Here is the situation.....my home network consists of 4 PCs connected via my Linksys router which is in turn connected to my cable modem. Now after a year of no troubles all of a sudden no computer on the network was able to use an internet related apps. I contacted Linksys tech support and they informed me that most likely my cable modem service provider had blocked the router's MAC address to prevent SOHOs being setup in homes. So the tech support guy walked me through changing the MAC address of the router to the PC in my room. After some testing with the PC and router (remember they now both share the same MAC address) I was able to connect to my service via my router.....Great news right? Well......now all the other PCs are unable to browse the internet using IE, Netscape, Opera ....etc
but the odd thing is that all the PCs are still able to ping each other, the service providers DNS servers and any external websites like yahoo.com and lycos.com but they cant browse any web pages except of course for the one PC sharing the same MAC address with the router which is having no problems.
I cant help but wonder if having the router share a MAC address with a PC on the same network is causing this problem.

Network consists of:

2 Windows 2000 Professional (one of these machines is working fine)
1 Windows 2000 Advanced Server
1 Windows 98
Linksys 6 port router
No firewalls installed at the moment.

Error message states : "Page cannot be displayed"... Read more

Right, so when I got home this evening, I was looking forward to some relaxed surfing and checking on my mail and such, but as you've guessed, that didn't happen.

Basically, the problem is as follows, I am able to get an adress from my router, I am able to ping inside and outside the network, the rest of my family's computers, including the laptop I'm writing this on, works. I am, however, unable to connect to applications and surf the web, msn cannot log on and Firefox and Iexplorer gives blank pages with "cancelled connections". I once during the evening managed to log on to msn but not initiate any new connections.

Routerrelated lookups; I've tested two different cables from two different interfaces on the router which on switch resulted in working for 2 seconds, and same on switching back, checked settings on the router if it was blocking or such. Also tried powering it on and off.

IP and the like; I Pinged the gateway, I pinged the other computers, I pinged yahoo, I pinged the ISP, all of which works. Tried both static and dynamic addressing. I also tried direct connection to the isp(with no result).

Hardware lookups; I tried disabling and reenabling, tried reinstalling them, putting in another NIC (Which I had lying around)

Software lookups; I've checked and rechecked IP's and DNS', I've reset with the netsh and winsock. I''ve run a full scan on the computer, no viruses or the like was found (latest version of Avast!), I tried disabling it and even uni... Read more

Hello, I am having an issue with a computer that otherwise works fine. I am unable to browse any website via domain name or IP address, with any web browser. Things I have tried include:

Problem: Cannot connect to internet with any web browser

Notes:
- PING works, internet connectivity with other applications work
- ALL web browsers affected (even portable variants)
- Direct IP and web address does not work (HTTP)
- Seems to be a DNS issue (?: ping uses DNS and succeeds)
- Linux connectivity works (is NOT a hardware issue)
- Affects all network connections (wireless or ethernet, tested different wifi connections)

Process:
- Network Diagnostics: [NOT RESOLVED] [Inconclusive]
- Reset browser settings: [NOT RESOLVED]
- Driver reinstallation: [NOT RESOLVED]
- svc /scannow: [NOT RESOLVED] [No issues detected]
- Safe Mode usage: [NOT RESOLVED] [Issue persists]
- svchost.exe replacement: [NOT RESOLVED]
- All firewalls turned off: [NOT RESOLVED] [AVG also off, all 3 Domain, Private, and Public windows variants off as well]
- Group Policy reset: [NOT RESOLVED]
- New user created: [NOT RESOLVED]
- MalwareBytes Scan: [NOT RESOLVED] [No related issues detected] [Safe Mode also inconclusive]
- HOSTS File: [NOT RESOLVED]

Answer:Connected to internet but unable to browse

Run some scans with general AV softwares, and it wouldn't harm to post a HJT log to the malware removal forum just to make sure the issue isn't malware related. If it isn't malware, try resetting the router. If this dosen't work, try disabling your network adapter and re-enabling. If none of these work, run CMD as an administrator, type in ipconfig /release, hit enter and wait. Then ipconfig /flushdns, after this, ipconfig /renew. One of these should help your problem. If not, nothing else comes to mind and I'm sorry that I cannot assist further.

EDIT: Make sure to do the CMD commands in that order, wait for them to complete each time.

I am using a Dell Latitude E6400 Laptop and have been wirelessly connected to our home internet for several years without any problems. However, of late I have been having problems browsing despite my connection being OK and signal being very good. I am able to still listen to music on spotify, as well as chat on facebook, but cannot load web pages or search for anything on youtube/google etc. I use google chrome but experience the same problem on IE.

I have checked whether it is a problem with malware and have removed all threats, but still the problem persists. the only way I have found of temporarily fixing it is disabling the wireless and reconnecting, whereby it will work perfectly again for anything between 5-50 minutes.

I have not changed my router recently so do not think that is the issue. I'm beginning it may just be a hardware fault with the laptop!

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hello there and thank you for taking the time to view my post. About two weeks ago I was suddenly unable to connect to the internet despite having a full wireless connection. I am using an 802.11n WLAN USB card which checks out fine in device manager. Naturally I ran Spybot and Malwarebytes to check for a virus, they discovered a few things but nothing particularly sinister.

Then I checked windows firewall to see if the problem lied there. But when trying to access the firewall I would get the error 0x8007042c restricting me from accessing it in any way. I tried a system restore and sfc/scannow command prompt to no avail. I also tried Microsoft's official solution to this problem with no success.

Hey everybody, i found this forum and browsed around a bit and it seems theres a lot of smart computer guys here, so hopefully someone can help me! A couple weeks ago for some reason i could no longer use the internet explorer i had always used to browse the internet, and also couldnt use google chrome browser that i also sometimes used. Then i noticed an Internet Explorer 64-bit option on my computer (never knew what it was) so i opened that and now i can browse the internet with that. But, i cant view any videos on youtube and a lot of the webpages are limited in what it will show me, and seems very slow. Do i have a firewall issue or something? I'm really confused as to why this happened, and I'm just stumped as to what to do. Thanks in advance for anybody that can get me going in the right direction, help is much appreciated!

I upgraded my OS from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Ultimate. When all was done and over, updates installed and so on I upgraded the Internet Explorer as well from IE 8 (included in the Win 7 install) to IE 9 (I used to have IE 9 before on Vista). A little bit after that I had to uninstall re-install the VPN client for my work and things started going south.
Currently after I start the computer the MSN Messenger is not working, the Yahoo messenger is not working, IE, Firefox and Chrome are not working.
IE just hangs, sometimes is displaying [<endif!>] but it seems to find the sites because I can see the icon of the page changing
Chrome is not able to connect even to google.com but it let's me down nicely (doesn't hog resources like IE does)
The Internet connection is fine because I can ping, I can connect to my work's VPN, sometimes even some https pages are briefly working.
Once I connect to the VPN everything works great.

Now comes the weird part after I connect to the VPN and disconnect, the browsers work, the IM works ... so something gets reset in that process and makes it fine but I have no idea what. (NOTE: IE9 is still barely moving - you request a page go get a snack and maybe it has loaded)

I have looked at numerous threads on different forums and I tried a lot of stuff but nothing seems to solve the problem.
I tried the netsh winsock, netsh int ... , ipconfig /flushdns, msconfig to boot in safe mode,

I even uninstalled the antiviru... Read more

I upgraded my OS from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Ultimate.Click to expand...

That's a pretty expensive upgrade. Especially considering that you didn't do it until almost three years after Windows 7 was released. Why? And from where did you purchase it?

So my question is what happens when VPN gets started that makes it possible for me to browse even after I disconnect from it?Click to expand...

Usually a VPN will block all other networking (resembles a firewall in that regard) when it is running. When you exit from it, it should stop blocking other networking. That seems to be working. Sometimes just having a VPN installed, but not in use, will cause networking trouble. So I think that your question should be, "why is my networking blocked before I use the VPN?".

Maybe some startup program that prepares for a quick start when you access the VPN? Maybe a firewall or security suite that is corrupted or mis-configured but somehow gets "fixed" by the VPN? Maybe something about just having the VPN installed that we won't be able to figure out?

I am finding this problem to be a bit of a puzzler, I have 3 pc's networked together and connected to the internet through a switch and then to a BTrouter, all connected via Ethernet cabling. None will connect to any page using IE10, one has google chrome that will open google, do a search if I type in a subject but if I try to open one of the found pages it won't open them, if I type in a website address same problem.
If I go into windows Live mail it will send and receive mails, suggesting to me that internet is connected. I have ran scans with Combofix and Malwarebytes which found next to nothing and booted into safe mode but still no success. I can access the software on the routers so that connection is fine.Have rebooted router and also changed the router for a different make and still no success, both routers seem to tell me that broadband is connected.

This was all working OK some days ago and then all stopped working.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received

Answer:Unable to browse the internet Windows 7

Let's try this; using an Admin user login, get the command prompt and then enter:

ipconfig /flushdns
net stop "dns client"
Quit any existing browser, restart a browser and try Google again.
If you can run like this (btw: it will be slower to resolve the url), then we need to investigate youretc\hosts file. If you still can't surf the net correctly, we need to dig deeper.

Currently I am showing that I am connected to the internet with no issues but when I open a browser or open Skype (anything requiring an internet connection) i am unable to connect. I have been looking all over the forums trying to find a solution. So far I have verified my DNS server is working ok as I can ping both the ip as well as Google in the command prompt with no issues. I have tried multiple browsers (Google Chrome, IE, and Mozilla Firefox) all with no luck. I have tried ipconfig /release and /renew with no luck. It is important to note also that I am typing this up on my laptop using the same direct connection I'm using for my PC with absolutely no issues whatsoever. I have also seen a lot of threads saying that it may be a proxy server but I triple checked in the internet options that no proxy servers were being used. After troubleshooting this for about 5 hours yesterday I decided to format my hard drive and reinstall windows 7. After completely reinstalling windows 7 I am still getting the same indications and after all this I am still unable to connect to the internet. If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

I have a computer running Windows Vista, It seemed to have had some viruses so I removed them, but I still cannot browse the internet. I can get windows updates and the computer is showing connected but no browsing in any browser. I suspect it is a virus. Please see my HiJack logs, and if anyone can help that would be great, I do not want to reformat.

Hello everybody. I hope you will be able to advise me on a very irritating problem I've been experiencing with my netbook. My flatmates and I recently got Sky broadband - their laptops connect just fine to the internet and they are able to use it without any problems. Mine also connects, but I can't do things like browse or use Skype, etc.

When I go into Google Chrome, I'm told there is a DNS error that was unable to be resolved. Mozilla tells me that I have a problem with my server, and IE doesn't work either. Also, I am receiving very few packets. For every 2,000 or so packets that are sent, I only receive 2 or 6. When I click 'repair' I am told that my IP address cannot be renewed. The thing is, the internet works on my netbook at my mother's house, yet it doesn't work in my flat or other places like wifi spots.

I've tried so many things, such as clearing the DNS cache, releasing and renewing IP address, I've set the properties of the wireless connection to obtain DNS and IP automatically, I've tried pinging, I've turned off all my firewalls, I tried system restore, I've fiddled with certain keys in the registry, I even rebooted my entire hard disk last night and it still doesn't work! I'm really at my wit's end with this and I don't know what else to do. The problem is way beyond my comprehension now.

My netbook is a Toshiba NB100 which runs Windows XP. I'd greatly appreciate an... Read more

Hi All,
I have a rather strange problem. The solutions mentioned in this and other forums didn't really help. When I turn my recently bought laptop on and get connected to the internet (wireless ADSL) with no issues. Later on, I couldn't find exactly what triggers it, suddenly I can not browse internet anymore- except for google sites like google.com, gmail etc. My Skype works and I can talk & use the video, I can download using utorrent. I can ping google sites, but I can't ping the modem. I can't ping the ISP. I reset the modem and the PC and sometimes it works - sometimes it doesn't??? I use LENOVO G550 with W7 Starter. I'm running clueless, please help!

Answer:Computer is unable to browse internet after removal

Are you positive you are clean? Malwarebytes doesn't catch everything that can cause that. Have you shown your logs in the Am I Infected forum?

This edit is to clarify, not bump, my post. I found the infections in the malware bytes log after posting: Rootkit TDSS, Rogue.RapidAntivirus.

I have been asked by a neighbor to fix their computer after update to IE8 failed. I am unsure exactly what caused tohe update to fail; I was called in at the point where clicking on the IE8 icon on the desktop would lock up the computer.

Here is what I have done prior to beginning this thread:
1-With help from Microsoft Support, I uninstalled IE8 after trying unsuccessfully to restore to a restore point prio to the update.

2-At that point, I had the PC connected to my network; it was running IE6, but would not load any web pages. Thinking it was a network issue, I took it back and installed it on their network. Same problem.

3-Thinking I had a conflict between IE and AOL 9.0, I uninstalled AOL. No change.

4-I brought it back to my network, where it is currently connected, reinstalled IE8, and configured TCP/IP like my other PC's.

5-The problem looks like a DNS problem, because I can ping any IP by address, and I can browse to Google by address. I installed Firefox; same problem.

6-Several posts regarding this problem mentioned malware as a possible cause, so I copied a Malware Bytes install file from another PC ion the network and tried to install it. It would not install until I renamed the file. Then the executable would not run until I renamed it. I had experienced this symptom previously on an infected machine, so ... Read more

I am using the broadband services of an internet provider in Quebec named Acanac-Inc. From the past few days, I am unable to access internet through WiFi. The internet is showing connected. But when we try to access a webpage it shows like "Cannot be displayed". I tried the same with a LAN cable connecting the laptop directly, and it works fine. What could be the problem behind this. If anybody knows, please share some tips to resolve this.

Having been "upgraded" to Windows 10 some weeks ago, I was managing to get it to behave (more or less). On 9 November I received another update. Since then I have been unable to Browse any sites on my Dell N7010 laptop - they all come back with {site name} Not Responding. My Thunderbird email is working fine from the laptop and I can also browse with no problems from my Android tablet, using the same router.
Have tried clearing laptop cache and history etc and have also done a System File Scan with no errors reported.
I don't have any other browsers on the laptop to try.
Very grateful for any help or advice.
Thank you

Hiya

I'm a relatively experienced Windows user, but I'm absolutely stumped by what's happened. Basically, I am able to browse the internet for about 5 minutes after I log onto windows, but after that internet activity basically stops, despite still being connected.

What happened was this. My virus-scanner (Avast!) updated yesterday and flagged around 20 files as being viruses (rootkits, to be exact), all of which were .sys files in the Windows/System32/drivers folder. I started moving them to the chest, but a few I actually deleted, thinking that they were replicating themselves as I moved them to the chest.

Well, these turned out to be pretty important drivers. I actually deleted drmkaud.sys, along with two others. As soon as I realised what I was doing, I started to click "No action" in Avast! instead, and restored as many as I could from the Chest. After restarting windows, I had some pretty serious problems due to the ones I'd deleted.

Anyway, I managed to download the files I'd deleted, but I still had some consequences - I somehow lost my boot.ini file; I started to get errors from some other programs; and of course my internet connection stops after about 5 mins.

My symptoms are very similar to these: http://forums.techguy.org/web-email/641277-solved-suddenly-cannot-browse-internet.html

I too am on a LAN, although I haven't yet tried renewing my IP each time it happens.

Would anybody have any clue as to what is wrong and ... Read more

Answer:Solved: Unable to browse the internet after about 5 mins

Oh, ok, problem solved!

For your information, this seems to be quite a widespread problem - I found someone else on a different forum who had the same problem, and they believe quite a few people had it.

Zone Alarm (I don't know whether it's just the free version or retail as well) can sometimes prevent you getting onto the next after a few minutes. There's no error message or anything, and it just prevents browsers from exploring the 'net - email and MSN etc worked absolutely fine.

So I uninstalled and reinstalled Zone Alarm and it all works!
Thanks anyway 8)

This is an odd one. I can't seem to see website or update my virus software, but I am able to remotely connect connect to this computer. I was able to install Avast! and it found Win32:CTX and moved it, but that has not corrected anything either.

Any ideas why I can remotly connect but can out out on the internet?!?

hi,

i'm just a newbie and i could really use some help.

my dsl and wifi were working perfectly well until the system suddenly broke down on me 2 days ago.

i use a tenda 5M wireless broadband router model w541r, connected to a dsl service provider (pldt) and work on 2 laptops an old twinhead e12kt running windows XP, and a newer toshiba satellite m305d-s430 running windows vista.

basic problem now is that i can connect but am unable to browse (unable to resolve host) using my wifi router but am able to connect and browse with my laptop connected directly to the dsl modem.

the router is working prefectly fine however otherwise (i can connect using the router ip address and adjust router settings). my router has always been set to auto-detect settings and had been without any problems previously. i have tried releasing, renewing, and rebooting, and connecting and disconnecting my router and dsl.

after browsing some forums, i've tried fiddling with my ipconfig

here is how it looks like connected to my wifi router

I'm on here trying to find help for my girlfriend. She has had a problem for almost a week now in which she cannot get on the internet to browse webpages. It keeps coming up with unable to find/load pages (like she has no connection). However, her connection is fine according to her computer and she is able to use msn and msn voice to talk to me. In addition, she's had some nasty bugs in her computer. She's had no anti-virus program, but I bought McAfee (Total Protection for 3PC's) and sent her the installer since she couldn't download it herself. She isn't able to install it because it keeps saying she can't connect to the internet. She did several scans with Malware Bytes and repeatedly found trojan.vundo and virtumonde. I downloaded HijackThis and had her run it, then had it analyzed and we fixed the .dll files that were associated in it with virtumonde. However, she still can't get online to browse and neither McAfee or Trend Micro will let her install their programs. (Trend Micro keeps saying there's a threat on her computer that won't allow them to continue to install and asks her then to scan. After this is just stops.)She also experiences several "ghost" error messages in which the error sound is made but no message ever shows. It has to be looked up in the events viewer to figure out what error occurred. Below is her log. I just had her run another scan with Malware Bytes and it came up empty. She's also used Spyware Doctor with the same results. Help woul... Read more

Ok, so I've been trying for most of the day to fix these issues to no avail, and I've done something that's apparently made it worse. I'll do my best to include everything that might help.

Basically, my internet claims to be connected (via wire to router, computer isn't wireless enabled.) but when I open a browser (I normally use Chrome but no browser is working) it came up with the Error 105 no matter what address I try to access.

So far, I have tried resetting my router and waiting, using cmd to reset winsock and resetlog, I've fiddled with some of the proxy settings and immediate downloads. Of course, I'm not entirely certain what half of those things have done, but nothing seems to have worked properly. I've uninstalled all of the firewall/anti-virus programs I had installed, which hasn't changed anything either.

I have had the 'connected but not connected' issue before since it happens quite often, but usually I disable it, restart the computer and just connect again, then it'll work - but this time it hasn't.

I noticed in a lot of threads it helps to have the information given from ipconfig/all, so I've copied out what I get from that below.

* I've just noticed that the host name has changed to STACYSC, when it's not supposed to be. I think this is from me attempting to connect to a wireless connection before I realised it wasn't enabled - could this be an issue?

I tried on two different pc's

has orange blocked this type of activity and i would have thought I could have ping the IP address ...

any ideas ??

I doubt the ISP is blocking ICMP traffic. But what you need to verify with your friend is if he has the router configuration to block ICMP/Pings.

For a couple years I have had to roll back certain Windows security updates,, because they would prevent my browser from connecting to any websites. At first I thought it was a networking issue, but I was able to ping Google with cmd and able to access Windows updates, so clearly the connection itself is fine. So, as I said, for years I have rolled back any updates that caused this problem, which were usually about 1 per month. A few months ago I tried to install and us FireFox, but it could not connect to the browsers, even though ie could. I read somewhere that ie9 could possibly fix any issues. I was using ie7, and in order to download ie9 I had to download a lot of the updates I had restticted in the past to maintain connection to browsers. So I did and now nothing works aside from pinging and windows updates. I shouldn't have to restrict OS updates to use my laptop.

I posted this on the Windows forums when this first happened a few months ago and they were less than helpful, often ignoring the fact that I am connected to the internet, just unable to connect to browsers or update my AntiVirus or any other programs. I have checked the firewall and there are exceptions for the browsers, and I have even disabled it temporarily with no success. I used the diagnosis tool in ie9, but it says there is no problem.

I am at a loss, and wondering if it might be easier to reformat. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

i'm facing 1 issue currently,
some of windows Vista/7 notebook not able to access to Internet.

Let me introduce you more about the issue. i'm IT support at a hotel. recently, i have quite a number of guest having issue not able to connect to Internet.
Troubleshooting that i have done.
FYI, all the affected notebook managed to get IP address, no Proxy, IPV6 has been disable. tested on both cable and WIFI ( in room, guest internet provided via ADSL wifi router )

1: ping to gateway = no respond
2: ping to computer in the network = OK. managed to get respond. (we have no VLAN to our guest network)
3: ipconfig /release , ipconfig /renew , ipconfig /flushdns

it's only happened to some guest, not all. but all notebook i attanded to are running on Windows vista and 7 SP1.

i have restarted our load balancer, and all guest network switches but still received few call regarding the issue.

Any suggestion?. could it be related to our guest Internet infrastucture?

Could you elaborate on what you mean by Guest Internet infrastructure?

Most hotels I've been to have two Wifi's

One for guest use and one for office internal use.

Guest machines should not have access to office internal devices, though they may see other laptops in the guest network.

you say guest internet is provided in room by a ADLS wireless Router, are you saying every room has its own DSL line?

Please elaborate, thank you

Hi all,

I'm trying to fix a weird web browsing problem with our Acer Aspire One netbook running XP SP3. I can't get IE or Safari to load web pages but I am connected to our D-Link wireless router and can ping our ISP. Today Windows even downloaded, installed the latest updates and asked to reboot. So I know there is an internet connection and it's working just fine.

I have:

installed and run AVG and then uninstalled it
disabled windows firewall
uninstalled everything that wasn't necessary
checked the browsers aren't working offline
checked for proxy settings in both safari and IE
completely reset IE to all of its default settings
done a clean boot according to the directions on the MS site http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796>
The log from ipconfig/all and ping google.com are below.

So this is a problem I have never seen before and has baffled me. I'm running Windows 7 64, and for awhile I had been getting avast alerts saying they blocked a file trying to access the internet and it would re-direct my browser. So I followed where avast said the file was and deleted it. Shortly after though. My internet stopped connecting to any and all servers. I can't play online games, I can't connect to chat rooms, I can't connect to Steam for those of you who know what that is. But I can browse the internet just fine.

I've tried disabling my firewall, reinstalling firefox, I even went to a 24/7 Tech Support place and they took over my computer only to come back to me saying they can fix the problem but it'll cost me $139. HA! Anything I was watching him remotely work on my computer and he opened CMD and tried pinging servers, sending 4 packets and having 4 packets fail. I'm not going to pretend to understand what he was doing. All I know was he was trying to communicate with servers and failed.

Any help on this would be wonderful! I know my way around computers just enough to get myself in trouble, and I'm not afraid to find and edit files. So please any and all suggestions are welcome! I just want a free fix that I ca do myself.

I've got a 'friends' laptop here. I can ping anywhere (router, other PCs on LAN, www.google.com, my DNS server), but cannot ping the laptop itself. I cannot browse the internet or connect to the internet in any other way.

Thanks for your help!

Answer:Can ping, Can't browse

Cant say I have the answer but think about this. It is obviously getting an IP(you can ping). It has internet connectivity(you can ping Google). It sounds like you have a DNS issue or a browser issue. Try typing 216.239.57.99 in a browser. If google comes up then you definately have a DNS issue and your computer is not resolving names. Check your TCPIP properties or do an IPCONFIG /all and see if you have a DNS server listed. If you do I might start looking at your browser.

Hello all.

I'm cleaning a spyware/virus infested HP for a friend of mine, but I'm running into a problem. The system looks clean, but I can't browse, even on the local network. I can ping both IP addresses and URLs. I've tried removing and reinstalled the drivers, tried newer drivers, tried everything I could think of to repair winsock, tried flushing and registering DNS. I've also tried both Firefox and IE. I've also tried removing and reinstalling IE7, but nothing works. Any ideas?

Answer:Can Ping, Can't browse. Need help.

Sounds like a DNS problem to me. Start by trying to ping the dns addresses. Do they respond? Try a different dns server.

It could be any one of a number of solutions to this problem depending on the causde, but it seems to me like it is some sort of dns issue.

EDIT: Check the firewall make sure that it isnt blocking the DNS port. Even if you can ping the DNS server, if the port is blocked it still wont work....

I am working on a notebook, and I have been looking for a fix, but nothing works so far.

I have:

Turned off the windows firewall
Un-installed Norton (via Norton removal tool)
Un-installed AVG
Ran Winsock Fix
Ran Combo Fix (removed a bunch of gunk)
Ran Malwarebytes (removed a bunch of gunk)
Ping via CMD google.com (works fine)
Set IE to not use a proxy
Set TCP/IP settings to auto
Ran "netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt" via CMD

Firefox will NOT work
IE will NOT work

Any ideas?

From a Johnwill post on the Networking Forum
Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NOTE: For the items below surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work. Also, the < and > in the text is to identify the parameters, they are also NOT used in the actual commands.

Do NOT include the <> either, they're just to identify the values for substitution.

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 74.125.45.100

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above. (For Vista/Win7, the IPv4 Address)

Answer:Can't browse but can ping

Okay, so you get a good ping when you ping 69.167.142.128 with 32 bytes of data. However you are unable to browse the internet. If you are using Internet explorer, try using mozilla firefox. but first, I want you to unplug your modem and router for about 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Plug them back in, and while it is loading restart your computer. Once your DSL light comes back on, try connecting to the internet. You should be able to browse.

I've tried everything! I can surf the web and download but when i try to Trace route google/Microsoft or anything I don't get any thing back, its all timed out. I found this out when I tried to connect to a gaming server Battle.net and which it won't allow me to do.
My windows FireWall is Off, I couldn't turn it on even if i wanted to because it doesn't give me the option.
I am connected from a router to my computer with an ethernet cord.
I can connect to gaming servers with my laptops even if I connect with the ethernet cord.
I even tried connected the therent straight to the cable to the desktop!

192.168.0.6 - Windows XP machine with the problem
192.168.0.2 - Other Windows XP machine
192.168.0.3 - Windows 98 machine

.2 and .3 can ping each other and see each other's shares. .6 can ping and see everybody, including itself.

.6 shows up under the other computers' Network Neighborhood/Places but when we double-click on it, it gives an error. Other computers pinging .6 just timeout. "net view" shows nameof.6, but "net view \\nameof.6" returns error.

Tried running winsockxpfix.exe, tried removing nic from Device Manager and reinstalling, tried removing all clients/services and reinstalling (except TCP/IP, since it won't let me).

.6 has other issues too. Under properties for the LAN, Advanced Tab, it shows only an error "can't display. the Windows Management Infrastructure might be corrupted." And, "net view" from a command prompt returns, "System error 64 has occurred. The specified network name is no longer available."

Suggestions? Diagnostics? Things to try?

My daughter's computer cannot browse the internet, either with IE, FireFox, or Safari. I can, however, ping various internet sites.

Her brother's computer had a similar problem, but after running ccleaner, AVG scans, and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, and then uninstalling ZoneAlarm (which wasn't functioning properly) his seems to be working fine. The same steps on Dottie's computer haven't worked.

I've attached a current HijackThis log. Can anyone help me restore internet browsing for my daughter?

Thanks a ton,

Jim

Answer:Can't browse, but can ping

While off for the holidays I disabled the network interface and ran ccleaner again, anti-malware again, restarted the computer, checked the windows firewall settings, reenabled the network interface, and was able to get IE to browse.

Now I'm updating all the security functions and hoping my daughter has learned not to open every email and load every "free" internet game she sees!

Thanks for all the great information and help on this website!

I am having the most frustrating problem I've ever had. We installed a t1 line to my computer at work. I can ping an IP address and I can ping yahoo.com, but I cannot browse with IE or Netscape or AOL. When connected to another computer in the office, the other computer browses fine. Of 8 computers in the office, only 2 browse fine. The other 6 will ping but not browse.

I have checked the internet connection settings a million times. Reinstalled the drivers for the 10/100 LAN cards, replaced winsock32.dll, (running win 98 on some 98se on others-no correlation to the problem).

does anyone have any ideas or things to try? I am currently trying to run through a netgear router, but the same exact problem occurs when connecting the T1 directly to my LAN and the other computers that work do so through the netgear, so I am convinced that it is not the source. Hi there,

Recently relocated to a new house, had to change ISP's in the midst of all the phone line shenanigans (won't go into it).

Got a new connection and it didn't work. I am able to ping, search for things with google and even send emails but I can't browse. My ISP got me to put in proxy settings which allows me to browse, but I don't want to go through their proxy.

The ISP claims that it's a hardware/software issue on my end, but after following all of their tech support direction we still haven't been able to fix it.

This started out as a Win 7 issue, but in frustration I installed Win 8 in hopes that a fresh install might fix the issue.  No luck there.  It is a Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge.  It came with Win 7 installed and Win 8 Disks.  I have several machines on my home network.  This is the only one affected and it had been working fine for a year or two.  I am not aware of any new software having been installed in the last several weeks (aside from Windows Updates).

I can ping from command line but I cannot browse.  I've checked my IE settings against another machine that is working.  There is no proxy.  I installed Chrome (from a thumb drive) and I get the same result.  In each case, the page will try to load for several minutes and eventually come back with a page unresponsive error.  I can open HTML files on my hard drive but cannot even browse to my router.  I cannot browse by IP.  I have released and renewed my IP address and flushed DNS.  IPv4 and IPv6 are both configured to used DCHP.  There are no entries in my hosts.ini file.  I have run McAfee Stinger and Norton Removal Tool.  I've rebooted countless times and even, as I've said, installed a new operating system.

I'm stumped.  Is there anything else I can do short of junking this thing and getting a new computer?

I suspect you have additional malware that is blocking both browsers. If you have IE7 or 8 installed go to Tools, Internet Options, Advanced Tab and click on Reset. If you can now get on line download and run Malwarebytes Anti Malware and Super Anti Spyware.

Questions

* Did you tried to navigate with different navigators Ej: Mozilla, Chrome, Opera, Avant.
* If you know the IP from Facebook, Yahoo, or Google did you tried to put the IP in the navigator instead their name? I mean try to go to this ip's in your navigator (are from google)

http://200.42.97.111
http://209.85.195.104

* What navigator was using Internet Explorer? What version? What Windows?
* Do you have installed any antivirus?
* Are you in a home network?
* Do you have installed some firewall?
*Did you sucefully installed flash 10?

Possible Solutions

1. If you're using Internet Explorer 7 or above, check to disable all components and try to browse some pages as google, facebook, gmail.

2.Try another Navigator as Mozilla Firefox.

Good luck, tell us results.

If you have both a wireless and wired network card in your PC, I would try deactivating the wired card.

Maybe windows if trying to access the internet through the wired card, wich isn't connected to a cable at the time.

WINDOWS XP, IE 8.

Hi,

I'm brand new here because as an intermediate user, I have set my self up as a freelance help desk for basic problems with local communtity. which I have 100% success at so far.

However, this one is a little out of my experience.

1. User with Desktop with USB Belkin wireless adaptor to Broadband router
2. Can access router from desktop via IE
3. Cannot ping google from desktop
4. IE 'Gives cannot display web page'
5. Cannot run windows diagnostic 'cos not using windows for connection.
6. Belkin says connection to router good (which we know it is 'cos can see through IE))
7. I take my laptop to user's house, can connect to router and access web with IE, so broadband is ok via my internal adaptor.
8. Other laptop user in house can connect and browse , so problem is limited to the desk top set up
9. malware sweep clean
10. user now advises by SMS he has a diagnostic (software unknown at this stage, belkin? router ?) highlighting Username conflict.

Any ideas where I should go with this guy from here please ?

Thanks

Okay, So late yesterday, at about 7 PM, I was browsing the web, and tried to open facebook, but all I got was the loading thingie in Google Chrome. IT gave me a "Webpage is not available"

So I tried another website, google, and the same thing happened. I could not access any websites. So, I went and rebooted my router, and low and behold, I had my internet back! For about 10 minutes, then I lost the ability to browse again.

So I went into the Cmd prompt, and IPconfig'd I had no DNS suffix, but I still had an IP, Gateway, and all that jazz.

So I tried to ping 18.62.1.6 (Random IP Address that I think goes to MIT's website.)

And I got a response.

So I'm thinking this is some sort of DNS problem. All of the other computers in the house are operating fine. I also can see the network Icon in the taskbar say that I have Local and Internet Access. When I check the status of my Ethernet adapter, its got a fairly high number of packets being sent and recieved, and I'm completely stumped.

Ive tried:
Updating drivers
Ipconfig /dnsflush
ipconfig /release
Ipconfig /renew

Ive tried setting my system to using Googles Public DNS, to no avail.

And so Im stumped.

Vista 32 bit home basic
AMD Athlon X2 2.0ghz
4GB DDR2 pc 5300
Marvell Yukon 88E8056 Gigabit Ethernet controller (Onboard)

Is there anything you think I can do Short of Re installing Vista?

Thanks in Advance,
Sean.

Answer:Can ping, but cannot Browse?

Welcome!

Have you tried updating your network adapter drivers?

Are you trying to set a static IP on your computer?

Can you try another browser, just so we can eliminate that possibility?

Hi,

so I guess I unintentionally installed some rubbish coz I can't access net (any browser, Skype, updates, ANYTHING).

The wierd thing is that I can actually ping websites including DNS resolution (ping google.com results in finding IP 216.58.209.206 and all packets come back!).

I noticed that after Windows boots the Network And Sharing Center is unaccessible for like 60 seconds - is this normal behavior ? Also, my Windows time sets itself 2 hours BEFORE the actual time (shows 2PM when it is 4PM) but I guess that is just caused by missing connectivity.

I did tried gazilion of antiviruses/spyware removal tools and so far nothing helps. I REALLY want to avoid complete reinstall

Thanks for any tips,
Zbynek

This started when I got the pop up for the rouge xp security 2012 that indicated all sorts of infections. I was fairly certain this was most likely malware because I had Avira antivirus installed and had windows security turned off. So I Google'd what this was and how to get rid of it. I came up with a catch all series of programs to run, and if all else failed to post here. I started by running tdsskiller, iExplore, Malwarebytes', and a full scan using Avira. Because of not being able to connect to the internet, Malwarebytes' could not be updated, and indicates that it is outdated by 107 days . these programs seemed to remove the virus/malware but I was unable to access the internet. To start I could connect to my wireless connection, but when i opened Firefox or Internet Explorer it would not load anything. Now after a restart, my computer is unable to find the wireless connection I have been using. The problem is not the router or anything on that end because I can connect to the internet through my phone through my SSID and browse the web without issue. I'm also able to connect on this computer which is connected through ethernet. Also part of this problem is when I try to turn on windows firewall I get the "Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/ICS service". "start>run>netsh winsock reset" yields no change.

thanks for any help in advance.

Good day
I am in need of some assitance. I apologize if my message is long, but I want to provide all necessary information to solve my problem as I am at the end of my rope.

I am unable to browse on the internet, I have tried many things to resolve the issue, see below:
-In LAN setting, I tried to with Automatic connection detection checked and unchecked
-Deleted cookies and browsing history
-Renewed IP address
-Flushed DNS
-Used Winsock repair
-Tried to repair TCP/IP (suggestion from a post a saw on this site)
-Disabled Anti-Virus, Firewall, and spyware
-Installed Firefox
-Formatted and reinstalled Windows

Even after reinstalation, problem still persist. I am able to ping my IP address and other web sites (yahoo) Funny thing, if I enter the web site address in myself, like Google, I can get to the page, but after that it does not work, and it is not for every sites, only a few sites. Before reinstalation I could not browse the internet, but I could still play online games. Before that, I had the same problem, then a new windows update got installed and I could browse again, but only for a week, then problem came back.

I use Windows XP, I have a DSL LAN connection with a Linksis router with another computer which uses Windows Vista (that computer's connection is working fine btw)

I've tried many, many solutions today. Via winsocket fixes and safe mode tweaks. I have a customer computer that just will not browse no matter what I do. I even reinstalled IE and firefox, nothing will browse. I set manual DNS, and got the same.

I noticed in the info bar in IE it said it was connectiong to www.www.msn.com.net Last I checked that's wrong lol. However, I can't seen to fix the issue no matter who's advice I take. Customer messed it up because I just formatted the system 2 weeks ago and worked great. Since I don't know what he did, I have to go step by step. I'm out of steps.

Even tried other network cards, just for the hell of it.

Thanks in advance.

Go to this post here first, and follow the instructions EXACTLY.
How to remove Begin2Search / Coolwebsearch
Then see How to post your Hijackthis log-files.

This is not a cure-all, but that PC may well be hijacked.
Have you tried to switch of the "auto-complete" in IE?
Also, an URL with double www does not work.
