Solved: Router useful life

Question: Solved: Router useful life

I have a linksys wrt54g and am real happy with it.My question is this::
Today on a radio tech show,the techie said that because typically a router is on 24/7,one should not expect it to last more than 24 months.I do not have an on/off switch so would have to unplug if I really wanted to turn it off at night.
What is your collective wisdom on this?
Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Solved: Router useful life

My belief is that routers, modems, computers and other electronic devices will last more calendar days, and probably more in-use hours, if they are powered off when not being used for a significant period (say, 10 hours).

My wisdom is that a power strip with a switch makes it very convenient to power off whatever you plug into it. And if the power strip has surge protection, that's even better for the potential life of your equipment.

Well it's actually my friends ps3. I've literally tried everything though. There is absolutely no secruity on the network, any device can connect to it except the ps3. no mac filtering. My friends router IP is unique, and has the same dns servers as me, only difference between his router and mine setting wise is mines a much newer model(both netgear). Tried with UPNP on/off. Tried assigning a static IP to the ps3 and manually setting the IP and DNS on the ps3, no go. If i leave everything to automatic on the ps3 it fails to ever obtain the static IP that i assigned. It acknowledges that it connects to the network but it will NOT assign itself a static IP. I've tried resetting the router and doing everything over multiple times. Would a new router fix this problem, why would this problem be happening with my friends current router? Nothing should be stopping it at all. I just brought my itouch over and it connected and got assigned an IP seamlessly...it's just the ps3... and it's connected to other networks before, just not his own.

Answer:Can't for the life of me get my router to assign an IP to my ps3

none of you networking pros can figure this out?

My wireless router does not seem to be working for Internet connectivty despite many reboots. It's (Netgear fm114p) been in use for less about 10 months. The only thing I can think of is I had some wiring work done to an electrical outlet. Since then, it started requiring power reboots during the day (due to losing a signal); then within the week (yesterday), the lights are not working correctly.

Thanks

This has been driving me absolutely insane lately. I have been trying to setup a LAN for my brother in law. For some reason his computer will connect to the internet directly through the modem but not through a router. I have tried 2 different routers (the blue linksys everyone has and a d-link model) and also tried a new NIC. Nothing seems to work for this computer. When I connect to the router via wireless on my laptop everything works fine. Also when I connect any other computer via hardwire it works fine. But not this one. This is also a clean install of windows XP on the machine.

At this point any ideas would help.

The routers are setup for DHCP Addressing and the computer is setup to Auto configure the IP.

Answer:Cannot connect to router to save my life

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

What country are you located in.
Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Make and model of your computer.
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?

If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands:

PING 216.109.112.135

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

The other day, I attempted to update the firmware on my router, but as I was doing it, my mother unplugged the router. Since then, no matter what I do with the router, it shows no signs of life. Fortunately, I have a back-up router just in case, but, I'm wondering if theres any way to re-flash the Belkin back to its original firmware. I've tried holding in the reset button for 15 secs, but not with the ethernet cables in, just the power lead, could this have anything to do with it?By the way, it is a draft-N router, the F5D8233-4 (cable not ADSL).Any help is very much appriecated.

Hi, I have had my T430 since August of 2012 at the start of college. I am currently running windows 8.1 pro and I recently just noticed my battery life issues and after installing lenovo settings I discovered that my battery's capacity is at 27% of the original capacity. The battery life is really bad, e.g. it says 15 minutes remaining at 25% on POWER SAVER mode.  I have google this and it said to "reset my battery" but unfortunately 8.1 Lenovo power manager doesn't have that feature.  I am just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for what to do?  Will I just have to get a new battery?

Answer:Lenovo T430 Battery Life 1+ hour on life saver

you would have to have a pre-Windows 8 OS to gain that crucial battery reset function. This is one reason why i dislike running Win 8 on ThinkPad.

To all owners of X1 Carbon 2017 (5th gen).I read all of those reviews where people are impressed by 10+ hours of battery life (15,5h advertised), but I can't really figure out how....!? First time I tested was a normal working day - Firefox (a lot of Flash it must be said), Outlook, Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat. Nothing really heavy, no peripherals except Bluetooth mouse. Brightness dimmed 1 level below the ideal. It lasted for about 4 hours! I windows's list of apps affecting battery life, Firefox was on 1st place with 32-35% Second attempt - same set of tasks, however less Firefox (no flash) - 7 hours. Now in the middle of a 3rd attempt (using Opera this time) - battery time remaining indication goes over 10h only when I completely stop using the laptop Not many apps running in the background either (Dropbox, Skype...) So my question - do you guys get more than 10h of battery life and HOW? Do you enable "Battery Stretch"? How actively do you use it and for what?

Do two things. Since you didn't say what video card you have, I can't point you to the proper ones. Download the reference drivers for your video card. These are the drivers that Half-Life was tested on. For ATI, go to http://www.ati.com/. For Nvidia, go to http://www.nvidia.com/.

In the settings for Half-Life, turn off hardware acceleration for the sound. You'll be using DirectSound (part of DirectX).

I want to extend the life of my computer as much as possible, of course. Along this line of thinking, what can I do to limit the stress on my CPU? I.e. when not using it should I turn it off, put it in standby/hibernate, or leave it on? I assume there is stress on the cpu during turn off and turn on times, as well as during normal operation.

Battery 10 min (40% remaining), 16 min (60%), it is weird. I'd say nothing if I had 15% but 40% and only 10 min, it's too little. All the time I just sit with this cord and never bring the laptop to the lessons, just because the battery life doesn't seem to last quite enough
I definitely have problems with the battery, don't I?

Answer:Solved: Low Battery Life

I'm afraid that's probably just a natural degradation, everything wears out at some point and laptop batteries are no exception. Though they are rechargable, after a number of charge/discharge cycles they change chemically and start to lose their ability to hold charge.

It may be possible to perform a process known as calibrating the battery to restore it to some extent, particularly if the problem is actually associated with the energy meter on the battery. However this only works for certain kinds of battery.

The alternative is that you will have to buy a new battery for your laptop.

I've seen http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/999033-solved-save-my-computer-4.html
and from that I got:
"Once the 1 GB modules have arrived and you've unplugged and disconnected everything and have opened the case, touch a metal part of the case before going inside and touching anything. Standing on a bare floor instead of on carpet is also helpful in minimizing any static electricity. Press down and out on both white locking levers at the same time to loosen the modules, then remove them. Remove the 1 GB modules from their anti-static wrapping, being carefully not to touch the row of metal pins. Make sure to orientate the modules in the correct position so the notch matches the raised area in the slot. Place the modules in the slot, then push down firmly near both upper corners at the same time until they're fully seated and the locking levers have flipped back up into position. Once you're done, reconnect and plug in everything, then start the computer."

On our PC there are 3 accounts.

The second account [my son's] has in the notification tray, the time and then underneath the time is the day of the week.

Now, I can't find anywhere to enable/disable this in the date/time options window.

One other thing...if I go to start menu>properties>choose classic start menu, then according to the pic there should be a blue margin on the side of the start menu saying: Windows XP. Well in the second account this is the case, but in my own account this blue margin isn't present.

While I'm aware these are not extreme issues....it's just I like to know what is going on with things.

It's just a curiosity thing.....I just thought someone out there could explain this to me.

Hello Guys, Thanks for helping. I searched here last night and found one thread fro Feb. about this question. I didn't find my answer but felt encouraged that I might be able to solve my problem withou having to buy a new video graphics card.

When I open Second Life, I get this message: Second Life is unable to run because your video card drivers are out of date or unsuported. Please make sure you have the latest video cartd drivers installed.

My computer is a little over one year old. It came out with Windows Vista Home basic. After reading the thread from Feb. I wasn't sure if this is the 32 or 64 bit version. I looked in Help and found a description: Windows System 32

More Info: Compaq Presario SR2150NX, Windows Vista, Intel Celeron D Processor, 356, ATI Radeon Express 1100 graphics card

I have followed the link to catalyst drivers. I don't know which package is the correct one for me, Option 1, Option 2, or option 3 .

Answer:Solved: About Second Life and video cards

You only need the display driver. The other downloads are usually just replacements for things that are already integrated into Vista, like screen resolution tools. Download it from here.

However when I go into the lifecam software and try to record video, a dialogue pops up that says "Lifecam Could not record your photo, audio clip, or video clip. see troubleshooting and product support in lifecam help for more information" When I went to see that all it said was to set the permissions to full allowance. When I checked they were already set to full permission.

Also Skype wont show my video. In the options it shows the video, but when I start a video call, my friends can't see my video.

Around this time, last year, my area had a terrible ice storm that left us without power for a week. We were totally in the dark (no pun intended) about the weather and how much more was coming. Now that I have an iPhone to use, I figured that with the 3G I would be able to read radar and such. The battery though, does not last for an entire week. Heres the question. We have two laptops in my house. I could use the charge off those for a few days if needed, ideally, but I was wondering which allows the charge to last longer. Closing the lid simply, or turning them off all together? Thanks for the help.

Well, the story starts here.

I asked essentially the same question there, but since it's more appropriate here, am re-asking:

My hard drive failed this morning. I woke to the kernel_stack_inpage_error BSOD, got various others as I tried to get the machine to boot, and finally (why didn't I get it days ago??) got a BIOS message that SMART had failed.

I'm a bit annoyed 'cause I received no previous SMART warnings, else I'd have backed it up the first time the error happened. Subsequent errors made me think it was a driver problem...

The failed drive is a 120GB IBM that's no more than two years old. There were no real indications, aside from the above BSOD, that there was anything wrong. Machine had been working fine after a reboot. The HD wasn't making 'I'm DYING!' noises or anything, though now it spins down suddenly sometime during the boot process. Sooner in the process each time.

Good thing I have a WD Raptor waiting in the wings, I just hadn't got around to installing it and reinstalling the OS yet.

I've done a backup pretty recently, but not necessarily recently enough. On top of that, last night I started deleting data off my external backup drive, so that when my new equipment arrives in a day or so (including a second 200GB SATA), I could move the 120GB into the external casing, replacing the current 40GB. Murphy just waits for little things like that!

So, what sort of software exists out there that wil... Read more

At work (where I have good but not total reign over my Dell laptop) lately I have noticed that one of many svchost.exe processes is taking almost all of my PCU power. It never seems to let up until I end process, but then the screen seems to refresh and I lose sound - the computer telling me I have no audio devices.
Going through add hardware wizard just shows me my default audio device as "working properly" but when I go to Control Panel --> Sound and Audio Devices it says there's none present.
I know the essence of svchost.exe and what it does, but what would it have to do with sound and why it would be such a pig, I don't understand. Is there a way to track what this utterly ambiguous scvhost.exe is running for? Any other suggestions?

I just got a intel core 2 stepped up from my pentium 4, i thought just to see if its defective or not i would overclock it (slightly) ive bin overclocking for around 5-6 years but i never knew what it did to the life span of a system i'd like my system to last around 3-4years, so what i wanted to know is how much faster will it die if i keep it overclocked.?
Also my 3dmark06 score is up from 10564 to 11853 so i'd really like to keep this. and crysis warhead runs from 20-46 fps so yeah it works good.
my whole system is overclocked 12% ram from 800mhz to 902mhz, cpu is from 2.66ghz to 3.08ghz volts are from 1.35 to 1.42v sooo how will this effect everything? I have uploaded a picture with all my volts temps, oh and my max 100% load my cpu runs at 37C and my graphics (after 1hr of crysis warhead) runs at 88C. so any help or insight would be very helpful thanks. (also could you vote on my poll? thanks i welcome anyones oppinion) But by all means post a comment! (|:-})

Hey guys,

I've been working on the Game Of Life in Java,

I've got all my algorithms working perfectly and the program runs and works fine, except for the GUI end of things.

We haven't actually worked with these before, but they way it worked was we were given code and told to write the rest of it, mainly all the algorithms which I've done without too much trouble.

I just can't get it to display properly, at the moment this is the code I have to paint

Code:
public void paint(Graphics g) {

for(int i = 0; i<board.length; i++){
for(int k = 0; k<board[i].length; k++){
if(board[i][k] == true){
g.setColor(Color.green);
g.drawRect(i, k, 10, 10);
g.fillRect(i,k,10,10); }
else {
g.setColor (Color.black);
g.drawRect(i,k,10,10);
g.fillRect(i,k,10,10);
}
}
}
}
board is an array of booleans which I use to store whether or not the cell is dead or alive. So if it's true (alive) it should paint a green square, otherwise black (assume it's dead)

What I'm doing seems to work sort off, I've attached a screen of the output

Anyone any advice for me? As I said I've never done any of this painting stuff before, we've only ever used the terminal or console up till now

Answer:Solved: Help with GUI for Java Game Of Life

A couple of little problems here:

Loop variables 'i' and 'k' are incremented each time - by 1.
The second set of coordinates are 'always' 10 - there is no relation to 'i' and 'k'
I think you will find that this gets you a lot closer to where you want to be...

Code:
if(board[i][k] == true){
g.setColor(Color.green); // see notes below...
/* g.drawRect(i, k, 10, 10); this is not needed */
g.fillRect(i*10,k*10,(i*10)+9,(k*10)+9);}
The i*10 and k*10 convert your array indexes into screen coordinates (assuming 10px boxes) and the second set of parameters set the end points to the start points with a 9px offset.

The call to drawRect is not necessary, fillRect draws a filled Rect, it doesn't fill one you've already drawn.
If you clear your image to black initially, then set colour to Green before your loops you can remove setColor() and the else clause (as your screen is already black - so no need to draw black ones again. It's just quicker and more efficient).

Hope that helps.

Was wondering if the life span of my case and cpu fans is longer if i run them the same speed all the time or let the bios control them varying the speed with temp.

Answer:Solved: Case and cpu life span

The lifespan on the fans is based largely on the actual quality and construction of the fans. In the old days of really large rack based computers, the A/C fans that were used had MTBF values in years, nowadays the cheap fans in most computers can crap out in a few months. I always go for ball bearing fans if they're available, they generally have better lifetimes than the sleeve bearing models.

I doubt you'd be able to measure the difference in MTBF between variable speed and simply running them full speed. The real bonus of variable speed is they're quieter if the cooling capacity isn't required.

Iím running dual Samsung 204B, 20.1 inch, monitors.
In the last several days, Iíve noticed these monitors seem to take a long time to wake up in the morning and come up to full Brightness Ö a few minutes longer than it takes windows to boot.
Kinda reminds me of a very old CRT TV

This morning, I had the monitors turned off .. Booted the computer, waited about 5 minutes, then turned the monitors on.
Same problem, so Iím sure itís not the computer.

The oldest (slowest) monitor is about 3 years old .. and theyíre normally running about 12 hours a day.
I really love these monitors, And I should be able to handle the repairs if I knew where to get the parts.

Suggestions/Comments ???

Hope this isn't confusing but, my internet provider (my cable company) came in to set up a wireless modem/router when we upped our internet speed today. We have three desktop computers which are hard wired to our existing Linksys router which we have been using previously. Would it be in our best interest to turn off the wireless function of that router (it's hooked up to the new modem/wireless router so the hardwired computers can function since the new unit has no ports to plug in the desktop computers into). Our wireless devices are all 'connected' to the new modem/router (using its passphrase and SSID). Can the wireless capabilities of each interfere with each other? They are sitting right next to each other.

Answer:Solved: Internet provider wireless modem/router and my hard wired router

It's confusing to me, but can make two comments ...

a. If you are not using the wireless network of a router it's best to disable or turn off the wireless--saves electricity and should extend the life of the router.

b. Two wireless networks whose channel numbers are less than five from each other can interfere. In North America if possible use channels 1, 6 and 11 to guarantee non interference.

Hello,

Short story even shorter, there was a semi-power outage this morning (lights were very dim but power wasn't totally off), and when the power came back on my router stopped working. Here's what I know:

-The WLAN LED is no longer lit so there's no wireless. That orange CiscoSystems button is no longer glowing orange either if that means much.

-For some odd reason a wired connection through any of the ethernet ports on the router no longer works either, though the LED's still light up when connected, along with the internet LED.

-The modem works fine, I'm connected to the internet directly from the modem right now.

-I've tried to reset the router, but it doesn't seem to do anything.

-I've tried to access the router config settings, and the page doesn't load.

-I've tried to look up the routers ip address through the command prompt but when I enter the command "ipconfig" when I'm wired through the router I always get the response something along the lines of "media disconnected". When I try the command when connected directly to the modem the default gateway ip address comes up as '68.43.36.1'. This doesn't work either.
I've been searching the web for solutions for hours and I can't find one. This is actually the first time I've ever had to post a thread asking for help and I've experienced a slew of computer problems over the years, lol.

It may very well ... Read more

I was attempting to port foreward for my PS3, but was having no luck. Long story short, I tried changing the router's IP to see if it would work. Here's where the problem began. I changed it from 192.168.2.1 to 192.168.1.1, which I believe may have made it conflict with my modem. Now I'm stuck not being able to access the internet through the router at all or access the router's configuration to change it back. When I try to access it, I just get a "Page not Found". The computer connected directly to the router is running Windows XP. The Router is a Linksys WRT54GS v. 4.

I've tried disconnecting the internet from the Router to see if it would stop the conflicting problem (if that is indeed the problem), but it didn't work. I've tried setting up many different static IP adresses for the computer connected to the router directly, but it didn't work. I've tried nearly everything, but I just can't get it working.

I'm posting this through a computer connected through a switch to my modem.

Thanks in advance.

So I have AT&T DSL. I bought a Netgear N300 ADSL2+ Modem/WiFi Router that is compatible with my service.

Previously with this Modem/Router it would constantly drop the wireless connection for the Wii I have that was used to stream Netflix.

So recently I bought a Linksys E2500 Router so I could be able to use the Wii, along with 3 other desktops, 1 laptop, and 3 phones.

My ideal setup would be this:
Set the ADSL2+ Modem/Router to be just a modem (I know how to set the option for this)Connect the Linksys Router to be what all the devices connect to wirelessly (this would serve as the DHCP server)
I have read that one of the Routers has to be set to "BRIDGED" mode, yet I don't know which device has to be Bridged

Set the ADSL2+ Modem/Router to be just a modem (I know how to set the option for this)Click to expand...

this is being set into bridge mode - by changing to a modem

then connect the modem to the WAN on the router and you should be good to go

Do you have a wireless laptop that you can you can put next to the wii - would be useful to see the quality of the wireless signal and how many other wireless are there which may cause interference

put xirrus onto the laptop and put the laptop next to the wii and post a xirrus screen shot

I couldn't find any answers to this problem with the search feature but if there is, sorry.

I've had Half-Life 2 for a while now and it was working great. I upgraded my computer recently and now the game will not finish it's update. When i look at the properties for Half-Life 2 it says the game is only 97% updated and that "Update is required". I have uninstalled and reinstalled and updated numerous times and it will not finish. I can start the game but the menus will not load and the game becomes "not responding". Counter-Strike Source will work for a while but crash after a bit because it too is only 97% complete.

If you know how to get the whole game to finish updating that would be great (if you shared the information) .

Thanks,
Matt

I went to a small office that has a DSL connection. It seems to be going through a router of some kind because they all have IP adresses with the first 3 octets being the same number. (e.g. 69.147.292.xxx). I hooked up a wireless router to one of the network connections and attached 3 pc's to it. Of course they now all have addresses like 192.168.2.xxx. Router is a Belkin 802.11g router.

Can I still share resources from the 192.168.2.xxx machines with the ones that have the 69.147.292.xxx addresses?

Thanks.

I love the camera, except that it is horrible on batteries. I tried some rechargeable batteries to begin with, but they would last very short periods of time before needing to be charged again. I now use just regular Duracel batteries, but they too are drained very quickly.

What are the recommended types of batteries to use for digital cameras? I have googled it and have found pages with different answers. One site saying to use NiCd, and another saying to use NiMH.

Anyone have any luck with batteries for their camera? Mine takes AA batteries. Thanks for any suggestions

The game does take forever to load but it runs smoothly before the intro. When the intro starts G-man begins to talk and it works until he says job, then it freezes on the word *(Job Job Job Job Job Job Job Job). Then I must run task manager to exit the game (windows says Hl2.exe isnt responding and it closes) . Here is what I've tried already so we dont waste time:
Re installing the game
Updating (Graphics card, DirectX, etc....)
Also Ive noticed that the Valve logo dosent show at the very beginning of start up, but i dont know if that has anything to do with anything.

If anyone could help I would be SO THANKFUL

Here's my problem:
I just threw down $40 on the Half-Life Platinum pack, only to find out that I can't play it online. I installed all of the games, and all the single players work okay. I updated all of them with the Sierra AutoUpdate. The Counter Strike would not update. I can't find the 1.0.0.0. to 1.0.0.3 patch anywhere and the autoupdate can't find it either. but when i try to play Team Fortress or Blue Shift or any of the games online it tells me that my Half Life executable is out of date, and it opens up the update utility. The update utility runs and tells me that I'm up to date. How do I make the game realize that it is up to date? Do I need Steam?? Please say no. I hate that program. I do not want to pay any sort of monthly membership to play online.
Thanks.

My small home network is connected to a Z100G Zone Alarm router via wires. This router has WiFi but I do not use it as it is not wireless N capable. I would like to have wireless N to stream movies to a wireless N BluRay player. I would like to keep the Z100G because of the firewall function.

Can I just connect a new wireless N router to the Z100G? If so, would it then be best to connect all the network computers to the new router either via wired or wireless?

Thanks...

First I would like to say hello to everyone in the community as this is my first post. I would like to set up Linksys wireless router(wrt160n) with a Dlink wired router(DLR-604),The wireless would be the host router and I would like to isolate the wired router from that network,to protect my main computer's(2computer's plus network printer) from from my children s and friend's machines I connect to the wireless or wired ports on the Linksys.Thanks in advance, any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated .Cheers

Answer:Solved: Connect wireless router and wired router

This should be pretty easy. Just connect the D-Link router's WAN port to one of the Linksys router's LAN ports. The computers connected to the D-Link router will be isolated from the Linksys connected computers by the D-Link router's NAT firewall.

XP wired connection to a just installed Linksys Wireless WRT54GS. As witnessed by this plea, the wired connection works. Try to add a wireless device and the Linksys EasyLink Advisor (LELA) tells me I need to establish a wired connection to the router. It can't find the router. God this makes me mad. My first attempt at a wireless setup at home and here we are. Anyway, how can I make this work? Just bought a Dell laptop that has wireless capability but this dumb thing won't let me set it up. What's the solution? E-Mail and web work fine through the wired connection. Thanks.

Hey all,

I'm trying to connect my wireless router to my wired router.

Ideally I want the following: internet--> A --> 3 PCs + B -->itouch+ps3 +laptops

A: Gnet External ADSL modem with 4-port switch bb0055 (note: this is a modem/wired router)
B: Trendnet Wireless router tew-639gr

All 3 PCs have internet, so i'm sure my wired router is working properly. Using an ethernet cable, I've connected a Lan port in my Wireless router to a Lan port in my Wired router. My itouch, ps3, and laptops can connect to my wireless but I'm not getting any internet. I've also been able to access my wireless settings and change a couple of things.

From what I've read online, In B, I need to turn off the LAN DHCP and change my LAN IP Address. I've tried a couple of things but it still isn't working. Also what should I set my WAN settings to in my wireless router?

Thanks,

Hello.

I own two routers - D-Link DSL-504 (ADSL, not wireless) and D-Link DIR-635 (wireless).

The set-up used to be like this:
- Internet (ADSL) cable pluged in DSL-504 router
- PC connected to DSL-504 via Ethernet port
- DIR-635 connected to DSL-504 (Ethernet port to 'Internet' port) - DSL-504 works as a 'modem'
- Laptop wirelessly connected to DIR-635

Everything has worked (note: it wasn't me who set this up).

Unfortunatelly I have reseted the DIR-635 (wireless router) because of some troubles. Now the wireless router doesn't connect to the Internet. I can connect either computer via cable with the first router and it works like a dream. Computers can also see the DIR-365 router when connected to it via cable, but it does not see the Internet.

I've switched the setup on and off several times. Cables work. Computers work, they can see Internet from other sources.

I guess I need to configure the wireless router in some certain way, but I really have no idea, how.

I'd be grateful for your help.

Answer:Solved: Router cannot connect to Internet (via another router used as a modem)

Probably IP Address conflict as both D-Links would usually use 192.168.0.1 for default internal (LAN) IP.

You would need to change the LAN IP address of the DIR-615 to another subnet such as 192.168.2.1 for a modem LAN port to router WAN (Internet) port connection unless the DIR-615 can be set as an access point. Will need to check the User Manual to see. Will pull up a PDF and check.

Another option would be to set up using the following method by John Will.
Connecting two soho routers in a network
Tutorial from Johnwill from the Networking Forum

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

First off, THANKS for your time - anyone who responds! And yes, I have searched and searched... and understand what I need to do mostly, but need some expert opinions.

We have a cable modem going to my wife's work Netgear ProSafe VPN Firewall which goes to her work computer and VOIP phone. The Netgear is basically a router and uses 192.168.5.#.

The problem is, I want to open some ports for our home computer and use wireless in our house - but cannot access her work router (not wireless) or have my wife understand anything I ask her to ask her IT people to do.

So, I have a Linksys wireless router that I want to connect to the modem FIRST -- so that I can control the wireless on that and open ports as needed, etc. and then connect her work router to ours ( where hers can then go off to her equipment ).

The issue: I cannot change her router settings at all... nor the gateway, IP's, etc. -- I want our home computer to not have to use her router's settings anymore... as currently, everything is plugged into hers as there are eight slots. Both CPU's are running XP.

I know in networking two routers, you have to turn one DHCP to auto get IP's from the other, etc. and make one address static - like 192.168.1.2 while the other is 192.168.1.1 with the range of IP's the second router pulls from.... but I do not know how to do what I want on my router WHILE using the settings from her router.

Can I reverse the process/order like this? If I connect my wi... Read more

I have Linksys wireless router, and I've been using that for awhile, no problems with it.

I had a 50 foot CAT5 cable sitting around and as well, an old D-Link DI-604 wired router, so I decided to turn the router, into a switch so can I hardwire my Desktop and PS3.

I have the Port 2 Linksys router outputting the internet to the WAN D-Link wired router using the 50 foot cable, and then using Port 1 and 2 to my Desktop and PS3, respectively.

Everything on the Desktop and PS3 side seems to be great, i've noticed web pages loading times decrease.

Except that the computer which is hardwired to my Linksys wireless router, is awfully snail slow.

Is it because the D-Link router is a Router and not a switch, that this problem is happening?

Edit - I've been reading that this is more complicated then a simple plug and go. I have to disable the DHCP and everything, everytime I try to log into my D-Link router, it'll get into the routers main page, but nothing will load after I try to click 'LAN' or 'WAN' or 'DHCP'

Edit 2 - Alright, so I have changed my 2nd router to disable the DHCP and changed the IP to be different from my 1st router, and everything seems good except for one thing. When I plug in my PS3 to either Port 3 or Port 4, the whole network is crippled, and nothing connects. Very interesting. I'm going to replace the CAT6 cable from my PS3 to my router-switch with a crossover cable, i've got a feeling it's ... Read more

So, I now have Half Life 2 running on my PC with WIN98 OS but I contantly see small white flashing boxes appearing during game play of Half Life 2. Any ideas what the problem is?

I downloaded the game through Steam (AFTER TRYING THE DEMO, WHICH WORKED WITH NO PROBLEM) The game starts up fine and then it gets to the title screen. The title "Half Life 2" doesn't even show (Then I must run task mgr to close HL2) . This game is really starting to frustrate me. Any ideas?

I first noticed this problem with Half-Life 2. I attempted to start a new game upon starting it up, and my computer enters the infamous blue screen of death. This also occurs with Portal, as I tried that as well to see if it was unique to Half-Life 2. I attempted to make a shortcut with the following modifications to the HL2 exe:

-nosound -window -dxlevel 80 +mat_forcehardwaresync 0

However, my computer still froze upon attempting to start a new game, and the actual menu loaded much more slowly.

As for Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, I can actually run the game moderately well... until I approach the city of Kvatch. The moment I get anywhere near Kvatch, the exact same problem occurs: blue screen of death. I'm guessing this has something to do with the special effects associated with the Oblivion portal, but I'm really not sure at this point.

I used my event viewer to see just what occurs when the blue screen forces me to reboot. Here is what it says:

Error code 1000007f, parameter1 0000000d, parameter2 00000000, parameter3 00000000, parameter4 00000000.

I'll be including another post in this topic with my DXDiag information. Thank you in advance for any help provided; I'm at the end of my rope.

Oh, and this should be obvious, but my copies of Half-Life 2, Oblivion, and Windows XP Professional are all legally purchased and activated.

Hi,

I am wondering if end-of-life Vista is more dangerous than end-of-life XP. My reasoning is that Vista more closely resembles Win 10 than XP. So as MS was saying, attackers may reverse engineer patches meant for recent OS's into exploits that work on the end-of-life one. So it seems to me that Vista looks more dangerous than XP.

Hi There

My Brother in Law has a wireless router which he does not need anymore and was going to give it to me and i was goiing to replace (or add) to my wired Router.

I have a Broadband Modem (from Virginmedia) connected to a Wired Router (Mine) and then 2 cables going to 2 desktop machines (mine and my dad's). Bother connected to the internet all the time.

Can i replace the wired router with the wireless one without any major problems (do i need to change any settings or software?)

If the new wireless router has a wired and wireless capable then that would be better as i would like my dads to be wired as it is working fine and he does not want it to change at the moment.

I am thinking of getting a laptop (but not yet) and have a PPC that has a wireless card so that would be handy for both those to be wireless.

Is it easy to setup?

Thanks

Is there any way i can access both the routers?

Answer:Solved: Accesing wireless router over DSL router

Hi WarkaDang, and welcome to TSG,

Do you mean you wish to access the administration pages on both routers? Is so ...

Assuming your computer is using a wired connection to the DSL router and the Wireless router includes LAN ports, the simplest solution would be to plug your computer into one of the LAN ports of the wireless router.

Otherwise, you would need to see if the wireless router supports accessing the admin pages through the WAN port.
WARNING NOTE: Configuring the router to enable WAN access to the administration pages may make it vulnerable to attacks from hackers on the Internet.

gonna try to make this as easy to understand as possible. my network is/has been set up like this:

#1- cable comes from the wall into the modem
#2 - a line then goes from the modem to a D-Link (615) wireless router. this router supplied a few connections, including...
#3 - a line that went from the D-link to a Linksys WRT-GS wireless router. this is the router my PC is hardwired too.

This network setup worked perfect, i had ZERO issues.

2 days ago, the router in the middle(the D-link) died. i had a few other routers sitting around (a linksys wrt-G, and a TP-LINK wireless N), i thought i would be able to just put one of these in the D-Link's place and i would be up and running again... NOPE!

no matter what i do or try, i can not get #3 router to pick up an internet connection from whatever router is directly connected to the modem. the router that is directly connected to the modem has internet, no problems... but that router will not sent the 2nd router the info it needs to get online as well.

SO im not sure what the problem is, i have spent many hours messing around in the router setup pages for all 3 routers, changing IP's DNS's, advanced routing options(router mode or gateway mode), releasing and renewing DHCP's, resetting to factory defaults.... a lot of this stuff i dont understand. i even tried swapping places with them, to see if maybe one liked being the host more then another, no dice.

Hi to all at TSG

okay so i finally broke down and bought a laptop. I have 2 questions #1 i have a router provided to me by my isp provider for my desktop (verizon DSL ) the router has a 2 options in the back one is for a RJ45 jack, the other is a USB connection can i hook my laptop to this USB connection? ( i know it would not be considered wireless ) If so does the cable i have to buy have USB at one end and RJ45 at the other. Or USB to USB ? always had a desktop and if two people are on at the same time my wife on my desktop and me on my laptop is download and upload speed compromised or for that matter can we even be on at the same time ? Now to my 2nd question what wireless router should i put my money on or do i have to get it from verizon?

Thanx in advance to all those who take the time to respond or to even peruse these silly questions

Hi All:
I have a Linksys VPN Router at home set up to connect to an FTP site which is a server at my office. If I connect my laptop hardwired to the VPN router I can connect to the FTP no prob. If I try to connect using my wireless network router (Netgear) whose WAN side is connected to the LAN side of the VPN I can access the internet which proves that connection is OK but cannot access the FTP.

I know this is because the VPN FTP is looking for an address on my laptop which matches the VPN routers IP address. Problem is I can't figure out how to make the LAN side of the Wireless the same as the LAN side of the VPN. Inherently, I don't think this is possible as they are in effect 2 different networks.

So, my question is, Is there a way to do this? Can I make the wireless router more like an access point so I can make the hops necessary to use VPN through the wireless?

Thanks in advance!

Sean

Hello TSG Folks!

I have an ISP supplied D-Link DI-624 router with four ethernet ports on the back. Two ports are being used by computers, one by a printer, and one is wired downstairs to a PS2. I am thinking about buying an Xbox 360 but I don't have enough ethernet ports. What can I do or what should I buy?

Also, I am looking for something to extend the range of my current router or a whole new router. What do you guys recommend? The router is (and will be) in the upper right corer of the house.

Thanks a ton!
