Is there some certification to mount ESD safe equipment at computer workshops, etc?

Question: Is there some certification to mount ESD safe equipment at computer workshops, etc?

I heard there's some certification to mount ESD safe equipment (ESD mats, etc) at computer workshops and other ESD safe environments. Could I get this certification myself in London? Is it expensive?

Preferred Solution: Is there some certification to mount ESD safe equipment at computer workshops, etc?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have just worked through the Workshops feature on editing the C:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc Hosts file to stop adverts appearing in my software. All was going well until I discovered that I don't have permission to save a file in that location.
I am running Windows 8.1 on a brand new laptop and I am the only user.
Have I missed something obvious?

Answer:Adverts in Software (Issue 441 Workshops)

Activate and use the hidden Administrator account to carry out what you need to do
Start Menu > Programs> Windows System> right click Command Prompt > select Run as Aministartor.
type
net user administrator /active:yes
reboot and the Adminstartor account will be shown
boot into that and do what you require to windows.
on completion to deactivate the account
go to command prompt again and type
net user administrator /active:no
reboot and the Administrator account will not be shown.

Hi all,

Firstly appologies if this is in the wrong forum, I could'nt find a appropriate place.

A quick question a friend of mine wanted to train to get some qualifications to get qualified as a IT engineer or such. And I think foolishly he came across a advertisement on the net offering the world, they will train you up with full Microsoft certification with guarenteed employment afterwards. He has to pay £4000 just for CD-Roms teaching him, (as he is doing it at home). I don't know why but I think he will have to pay more to take the exams.

Myself I have gone to a local college enrolled and begin a course early next month CompTIA A+ (cisco) for the sum of £190 with part 1 exam free + £75 for part 2, Oh almost forgot plus £10 student parking fees.

Just as a matter of interest who do you think has made the best choice.

Hi
I was concerned about my computer equipment.
I just got myself a 19 inch samsung 193P, it has got a touch sensitive on off button in the front. it gets pretty warm on the top edge of the bezel with use. I was wonderig shoudl i unplug it at nights or something?

I recently bought an HP PS2410 printer, scanner, copier, it always remains on with the lcd display glowing away at night. i was wondering if i should turn that off too?

Answer:turning off computer equipment

Always turn off everything. Not only will you save yourself/parents money on electricity, But you'll also extend the life of your Pc & Components.

So yes, turn it off at night.

Just wanting to know because certain people love to smoke when using the computer.

Answer:Is smoking harmful to computer equipment?

Yes, it is.

Dust build up inside your PC increases the heat level by reducing airflow and insulating the components. Over time, this causes premature failure due to overheating or short circuiting of component through the dust layer. Smoke particles are just like dust particles except that they're sticky. Now that layer of dust depositing inside your PC is a layer of adhesive dust. Dust build-up occurs much, much faster because of the increase in the number of particles as well as the fact that so many are now sticky.

You can easily see the kind of dust build-up smoke causes by looking at a smoker's TV screen. Wipe your finger across it, and your finger will be covered in a brown, slightly sticky dust.

I recently purchased a new PC and it was working very well the first few days. I eventually installed a power source and video card from my previous computer into my new computer, and I began to have issues. When I boot up computer, I will see a solid underscore for about at least a minute before it finally boots up. Previous to this, it would boot up in under 10 seconds.

I installed an Antec earth watts 500 and a nvidia gts 450. I updated the drivers.

Other factors: Installed avg free, malwarebytes free, installed a couple of games and some programs like MSI Afterburner. I scanned my entire system with both of the security programs listed earlier.

I checked my connections inside the computer and everything is snug and secure. I couldn't see any issues.

So what could be causing the sudden increase in boot times? It doesn't seem to be a huge issue currently, but I would like to correct it if I can.

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Long boot times on new computer after install of equipment

Try to put the original components back in. Some computers don't like certain components.

MIT Technology Review: Electric Therapy for Medical-Device Malware
Researchers show how to spot viruses on equipment like drug mixers and pregnancy monitors: by examining their power usage.

Hospital rooms beep and flash with many devices that are increasingly getting infected with malware (see ?Computer Viruses Are ?Rampant? on Medical Devices in Hospitals?). But for several reasons, these gadgets are often incompatible with commercial security software

The malware detector first learned the devices? normal power-consumption patterns. Then it was tested on machines deliberately infected with malware. Subject: Recognizing good computer equipment at yard sales.

A lot of times I will look for computer equipment at yard sales and I do find a few
good buys(or at least I think they are). I find specialized plugs & various adapters that I might need later on during the winter. The problem I have is recognizing good equipment for the price. I know to stay away from white because that is usually older equipment. So I go looking for black maybe gray equipment. Sometimes I look at the manufacture’s date if the equipment has one. Is there any other tips that might be helpful when I look at used equipment. It seems like the more I know about equipment history the better off I am but that can be an overwhelming task. Maybe I should look at internet auctions & new equipment instead of buying used but sometimes it is fun running across stuff at yard sales. Any suggestions and discussions on this topic?
Thank you,

Answer:Recognizing good computer equipment at yard sales

What you need is an education and I don't know how to put that into a few paragraphs.

My experience has been not much worth having is at yard sales; but, it may be different where you live.

Like many people, I suppose, I want the sound of my computer to come out of the computer, when I am sitting in front of it and out of my TV when I am watching a movie. For some reason, when I press Windows key + P to swap from TV to computer or back, the sound does not always follow, so I have to do it manually (I need to press right mouse touch on the sound icon and then I have to think each time because it is not very clear). I had the same problem with my previous computer, that ran on Ubuntu. It is quite strange that both Linux and Windows engineers keep inventing useless gimmicks but cannot solve the basic issues. The problem will disappear from time to time and come back after a few weeks. Strange, in't?
Related question: I like to send the sound to my audio equipement when I listen to music. Is there some other way than plugging and unplugging the cable each time? I'd really live to have a small app that would allow me to decide where the sound goes according to what I want.

My wife's Latitude 7450 stopped charging. Some kind of short kills the power adapter when I plug it in.

That's not really my problem though. I'm trying to retrieve some files off the SSD. so  I pulled the disk and am trying to mount it to another computer using my handy SATA to USB adapter.

Disk Management in Windows 10 is seeing an Unknown/Uninitialized disk and is wanting me to initialize and format the disk. I know the USB adapter is good, because I mounted a different HDD with no problem.

My question is this:

Is the SSD encrypted (I don't know the origins of the laptop build)? Is that why the Windows 10 computer I'm using see the disk as uninitialized?
-OR-
Is my SATA to USB adapter or Windows not familiar with the SSD interface? Take a look at the picture below. The SSD has this weird hardware adapter.

Answer:Mount a Latitude 7450 SSD to another computer via USB

Could be either - but an encrypted drive is a strong possibility.  If it's encrypted, and there's no backup of the data on the drive, it's very possible you'll never see the data on the drive again.
It looks like your adapter should be able to handle the mSATA drive with no problem on the hardware level.

Hello!
I made an account just to ask this question, since ppl told me to get over here and try my luck.

Ive downloaded one ISO file and one bin file. I mounted them with Deamon Tools but nothin show up. Either pops up or can be find on my computer. I tried another iso file i case those 2 images i downloaded earlier was broken. But this third didnt show up either. I tried reinstall DT and tried Alcohol 120% and another mount software but same results there. I also have rebooted my computer twice.

Would be much appreciated if someone can give me some advice that can lead me to a fix.

Thanks in advice! Reegards

Answer:My Computer won't mount any ISO/Image files? :(

The tools you are talking about you need to create a virtual drive before you can mount ISO Images. Go through the options and find where it says create virtual drive and follow instructions.

I'm working on a project that will run off my flash drive. Due to various limitations of the software I am using, the software must always look in the exact same directory for referenced files.

I don't have the option of installing a program on every computer I try to use it on, nor will I have administrator access.

Is there any way to force a drive to mount to the same drive letter on all host computers with these limitations? Perhaps by using the autorun.inf file?

A short while back, for no real reason I'm aware of (I don't think ANYTHING has changed in my system setup -- certainly I can't think of anything in any way harddrive or partition related unless it was the removal of Acronis tools, but I would swear this issue occurred well after that...) Windows XP on my minimal computer suddenly decided to see and mount partitions it's supposed to ignore. I have a Linux EXT4 partition as well as a swap partition, and while Windows normally utterly ignores such partitions, it has all of a sudden randomly decided to assign drive letters to them. I've also just recently added a hidden FAT32 partition where I keep some data for various live linux distros and Windows is assigning a letter to it as well. I think I remember that Windows is supposed to show hidden partitions with NT versions now, but it won't let me change anything. Neither the Linux partitions, nor the hidden FAT32 partition can be adjusted in any way in the "Computer Management" section of the Administrative Tools. (I was hoping to just remove the mount point entirely. I don't want it assigning drive letters to these partitions in the first place.) It's odd that it won't even let me change the one for the hidden FAT32 partition though even though it at least knows the filesystem well enough that I can see the files and everything. Interestingly enough, it manages to offer the option to change the drive letter for my Windows p... Read more

I have 1.84 GB in photos (over 4,700 photos) of my kids on my Dell Computer (operating system: Win XP 2002) and want to back them up. My Dell Computer previously crashed and it cost me $1,200 to have my old harddrive read. I'm concerned about again losing my kids photos.

I have a zip drive on my Dell computer, but that's not gonna work as I would need too many zip disks to accomplish my task. I may be open to removing the zip disk from my Dell computer and installing a second harddrive (but I'm not sure if that will work or whether it can be done easily). I also own a Gatewate Solo laptop that I bought in 1998 and is operating on win 98. In the old days, there was a program called Laplink that could mount a second computer hardrive onto a first computer harddrive. I don't know whether this would work. As a third option, I do own PC relocator, but the only options it allows is to transfer all files from one computer to another and I don't think my old Gatewate Solo laptop could take all the data from my Dell Computer.

I would prefer connecting my Gateway Solo laptop harddrive (win 98) to my Dell Computer (win XP 2002). That way, i could connect to the internet through my Dell Computer and update my Gateway Solo laptop with the latest software as well as copy my 1.84 GB in photos to my Gateway Solo laptop.

In summary, my three options appear to be
1. Remove Zipdisk and install second harddrive in Dell Computer
2. Try ... Read more

Have you thought about backing up your photos on a DVD data disc? They can hold around 4 gigs of information and you can make as many backup copies as you want. If you have a home network, or know someone with a home network, you can hook both computers up to it and send your photos to the laptop. Or you could buy an external hard drive. Just some things to consider.

This morning we had a power outage and when I turned my computer back on, it would not boot. I tried several times to hard boot, with no luck. Then I tried safe mode. Ran an antivirus scan and it showed malware and several infections which it cleaned. The computer still would not boot normally. I then ran chkdsk, still would not boot normally. I have ran malware bytes, registry repair and the registry defrag program as well as done a disk clean up. It still will not boot in normal mode.
Since my last problems that you helped me with, I have upgraded to a broadband internet connection and have a home network. The 2 other computers on the network are fine.
A week ago, I had purchased Avast internet security and had problems immediately. It would not allow me to connect to the internet. That was uninstalled and I went back to the free Avast antivirus, Zone alarm and Spyware blaster. I was very unhappy with Avast customer service and support iYogi and decided I did not want Avast on my computer at all. I have since downloaded PC tools free antivirus. Once I have my computer operational again, I am open to suggestions.
Fortunately, I did not change anything on the other 2 computers. Just mine.

Assuming you're using Windows XP and Windows' own "Wireless Zero Configuration" to manage the wireless networking...Go into the Network Connections folder, right click the Wireless Network Connection and select properties. In the Properties sheet that opens, select the Wireless Networks tab. Highlight your wireless network and click the Properties button. In the next Properties sheet that opens, select the Authentication tab and untick the box "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network". Click OK back through all open dialog boxes.

How do I go about taking the A+ test??? I don't need to take the course as I have 15+ years experience. I've taken the free practice exams on the web and generally get at least 80% right.... Or is it all web based? Any links, tips, help is appreciated!!

Question: A+ Certification

Hey all,

New forum member. Hopefully I'm posting in the right spot. I hope to get a summer job next summer to do with computer setup/repair and I see that some places require A+ Certification.

Just wondered, is this an excellent asset to have or a waste of time? Is it expensive? Do any of you have it/need it in your experience? I imagine I would be able to pass it without studying or anything, judging by some of the older practice tests on the internet. I can't seem to find an up-to-date practice test, as a lot of them mention dot matrix printers and so on. Motherboards don't even have ports for that anymore.

Just wondered also, if you have A+, where did you get it, what was approximate cost, etc.? Thanks a bunch.

-Mike

Answer:A+ Certification

It's not a tough exam if you have some decent background on the subject.

Buy a book, I recommend this one
http://www.amazon.com/Certification...bs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1202478067&sr=8-1
and study. The book comes with practice exams and you can buy discount test vouchers from the author as well that also come with practice material, I liked his writing so much I got the Network+ book too.

I currently work as a bench tech, and the A+ is a good start but you'll be amazed the volume of info you learn just by being on the job.

Question: A+ Certification

First of all, I havent posted much on these forums, but I have been reading them for about 2 years. Anyways, I've decided I want to get A+ certified. I'm assuming there are at least a few people who post here who are certified, and I have some questions.

I have one of those exam prepare books which goes over the material and has a bunch of sample questions. Are these books/ sample questions any good?

How tough was the test, in general? I have been building/ repairing / troubleshooting/ overclocking / etc for the passed 6 or 7 years.... should I be able to pass the test?

Thanks.

Answer:A+ Certification

Im 15 and passed it when I was 14 via free test on Smart Certify Direct.com or something like that with like a 75% correct. Im use i could ace it now. A good amount of the questions where on older technologies that arent too common but are still around like ISA for example.

Question: A+ certification

This probably isn't the right forum for this, but how the heck does someone go about getting thier A+ Cert? I've been all around the web and I keep seeing references to vouchers and test exams and so forth. I've taken a bunch of the free practice exams and always scored well. So, what the heck is a voucher and what the heck to I do with it?

Answer:A+ certification

Basically if you go to a school and take an A+ course they give you a voucher at the end that is good for taking the test at a testing center. You can study on your own find a testing center and go in and pay for the test yourself. You'll need to find a testing facility in your location. Mine is at New Horizons. Question: A+ Certification

Hi everyone,

I am preparing for the A+ certification and i will be taking it by the end of August. I just came to know that the current objectives for A+ exam will expire on June 30 and will be replaced by new objectives which will be A+ 2006 objectives. The book that am using is A+ 5th edition by Ed Tittlel. Will the new objectives affect the number of questions being asked from the domains. Can anyone suggest me what should i do. Should i still keep studying from the same book and the same way, thanks.

Answer:A+ Certification

Can you find a description of the changes to the test? Information regarding the changes should suggest to you what areas to concentrate further on. I'd guess this is something heavily advertised as it indicates A+ certification means potential employees are up to date with computer technology. A+ certification isn't all that difficult to obtain (especially if you've taken study courses) at least in its current form.

Wish I could post you a link, but I've got to go.

Question: A+ Certification

I have completed the Lessons and exercises for the A+ section of my course. I am now preparing for the exam given by the college ( not the certification). I would appreciate any help in trying to memorize the vast amount of information.
I have used the Comp Tia Complete certification Kit by sybex throughout the course. As you are aware knowing and applying the information for me is not difficult, however the memorization of the specs poses a problem. Things like CPU sockets,I/O address, irqs, osi model, Motherboard form Factors, pin counts on memory modals & older serial /parallel cables, connectors, Busses ,minimum requirements for XP, Vista etc..I have already pick up some good Cram sheets from the web,but wish to hear any strategies you may have and want to share. In addition you may be aware that the pc comes with a plethora of acronyms. This includes networking Protocols.
Any thoughts, experiences, ideas would be gratefully accepted.

P.S. This a second career for me and I am an older student.

Question: Certification?

I apologize ahead of time if this question does not belong here but I didn't see any other alternative as for some reason I guess I'm not "allowed" to post this in the Off-Topic Discussion.

I'll just get to the point; recently I went into my local computer repair shop asking for a job. The man I spoke to (I'm assuming he is the owner) said he was indeed looking for another person to help him with his work. But he said as of now he can't hire me because I am not Microsoft Certified. (The shop is a partner of Microsoft so certification is required.) So how would I go about getting certified? I've done some research on my own but I am no closer to understanding what the exam I will have to take entails. For any of you who are Microsoft Certified or just know what it is, what is on the exam? And what would I have to study for?

Question: A+ Certification

Hello all,I've just been looking through my local college courses and they are offering the A+ certification course. Now as I get housing benefit I won't have to pay any course fees just the exam fees which through the college were about a £130.I know my way around a Pc fairly well and have done some basic IT courses but would like to do something more technical. Ideally I'd be quite happy with a job in my local college helping to maintain there Pc's which would suit me just fine and eventually maybe go self employed. So will an A+ certification be a worthwhile course to follow. Part of the reason for doing is to expand my own knowledge but I would also like to expand my employment prospects.I left school with no qualifications so its been a bit of an uphill struggle and you can only wash dishes for so long.I have also posted this in the speakers corner as well but didn't know if maybe it would have been better here.Any thoughts or comments welcomed,Cheers.

Answer:A+ Certification

Type A+ Certification into Google. Go for it as it is the way forward in the future. I, being agolden oldie, wish I had the opportunity to do such a course years ago. Good luck for your future

I'm not really sure if any of those are really in the same category. Are you going into security? Or are you going to be working in a tech bench type of atmosphere.

I was just wondering if anyone has heard anything (good/bad/middle) about getting test vouchers from http://www.getcertified4less.com/

Answer:Certification

I don't know about that place, but I'd like to ask anyone that has they're A+ 2003 cert a few questions. Basically I want to know how many questions are on each of the tests and how they are graded (I heard something about scores not being in percentage) in terms of the end grade. I really need to go get this test, but I want to know what I'm getting into test wise. Thanks in advance.

A+ Certification and Network+ certification are both equally as worthless, right? Worthless meaning it demonstrates the minimum amount of computer knowledge, yes I know technically you could study even for the highest certs and pass and still know jack.. But Network+ = A+ right? One thing however I heard was that Network+ was worth more than A+ but from what I've read, Network+ just really cover much..

To tell you the truth I spent a few hundred bucks and weeks studying for my A+, Network+, and CCNA and guess what...it did not impact my pay rate nor did it increase my chance of landing a job...total waste imho

Answer:Certification Help

Security+ is a step in the right direction, it is however not where it ends

Microsoft has some Security exams, you should google them i think the MSCE is one of them, there's Cisco security certifications but you have to pass the CCNA and CCNA Security before you can take the professional level security certification exams.

CCNA is a good step in the right direction in any case as 80 percent of networks out there run on Cisco's gear

you might want to consider CCNA ---------> CCNA Security ------------> CCNP/CCSP (pro level security = CCSP)

take Security+ this year because after 2010, the cert wont' be lifetime you'll have to recert every 3 years

if you're going to do Security+ I recommend Darril Gibson's book, it's on amazon for $29, his book can help you learn the material as well as pass your first time, highly recommended

Unfortunately what you are asking is a way to bypass the controls placed on the network, which is against the rules of the forum.

Try asking your network team/admin, even if they won't support you with it they might be willing to point you in the right direction.

Hope this is the right forum. I have 3 computers in my office, all running XP. I want to go wireless, share a DSL connection, use the same printer and be able to share files. I've never set up a network so please give me the idiot-proof instructions. I know I need a wireless card for each unit but I'm not sure what else is required. Money is definately a big consideration. Thanks.

Answer:What equipment do I need?

There are lots of tutorials available through the Help and Support Center and on the web, but to get you started ...

You'll want a wireless router (in general they come with 4 ethernet ports also). Unless you can't have one PC near the router, figure on connecting one via ethernet--you need to connect one that way initially to configure the wireless signal anyhow, so you can save a wireless card.

If you have a DSL modem with ethernet connection, the router and 2 wireless cards are about all you need (assuming one PC has a NIC). Routers with USB connection are rare (or maybe nonexistent), so you may want to buy a DSL modem/wireless router combination unit instead, if you don't already have a modem with ethernet.

The printer can be shared while it is attached to one PC. If you want to share it without having the 'host' PC on, then you'll need a wireless printer server or whatever it takes to connect it to the router via ethernet cable.

Hello.
I am at odd's with my cable provider and I do not think they can solve my problem but I believe that I can. Long story short: I no longer am willing to pay a premium if the networks force commercials on me and as many as 6 in a row.

I find that there are TV channels on line. So I need to know what type of equipment do I need to transmit the online signal from my computer to my TV and stereo receiver. The equipment must be wireless. So I guess I need a wireless transmitter and wireless receiver which then would need to be wired up to TV and my stereo receiver I think.

I also will be saving some money by cancelling cable TV and just keeping internet service and phone.
Will this Idea work?

One might ask; why bother? You will still get commercials. That's correct but at least I am not paying for them.

Answer:What Equipment Do I Need?

Using a Lenovo laptop, my wife regularly transmits whatever is displayed on her laptop screen to our Vizio TVs using an HDMI device attached to the TVs. This works quite well.

The device attached to each Vizio TV is a "ScreenBeam Pro": ScreenBeam Pro | www.ScreenBeam.global

I would not be surprised if they have newer models or if other companies have similar devices for sale.

Her laptop has built-in "widi" transmit capability. I don't know if that particular term ("widi", not "wifi") is simply Intel's name for Miracast, however I DO know that my cheap ($50?) Android tablet and my daughter's LG3 smartphone both can transmit their displays to the TVs as well and I believe THEY call it miracast.

The Screenbeam Pro attaches to an HDMI port on the TVs - haven't tried nor know how it would interface to BOTH a stereo and a TV at the same time.

Anyway, we use these on almost a daily basis and "cut the cable" months ago so have no TV service at all anymore - it's all internet.

Note - since our TV watching is "all internet" that means everything we watch on TV uses up our data quota - if you watch HD movies a LOT (like more than one or two per day), you can easily hit your data cap.

Note, part II - cutting the cable saved us $90-ish per month. If we upgrade our internet service to the next tier just so we can watch a couple HD movies per day it will only cost us another $10/month. As such, cutting the cable REALLY s... Read more

Alright this is a family's laptop that is about 5 or even more years old...has windows xp on it dont know the exact one -.-...alright.

My sister has been using it and says she has never done anything to it...which i dont believe but anyways this computer will not boot up what so ever...everytime you power it on it goes to the screen that says unexpected error software/hardware problem yada yada yada...and then it gives you the options of boot in safe mode, safe mode networking, safe mode command prompt, last known good configuration...and none of those will work...we do have the recovery disks to wipe it but are trying to find a better way if possible...and when you try to load into any of the safe mode choices it stops at multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys...will stay at that for about 5-10 mins and then just turn off...if you try to just do normal mode or last known configuration it just acts like it loads with the windows and the little green loading bar then shuts off...the more i type the more i think the harddrive is toast but im new and learning so i probably could be wrong. Just looking for suggestions =)

Oh and this pc will run very hot...so if its a hardware issue i would not be surprised.

Answer:A+ certification or a Degree

They look for both, along with experience.

Someone who has a degree in IT, CS, MIS, etc. and an A+ certification is more likely to get a job than someone who just has one of the two.

I would say that a certification plus some experience could equal out to someone who just has a degree. But it ultimately depends on the employer.

I don't know what forum to ask this on, and also, if this isn't a 'legal' question, feel free to remove it.

I am studying for my A+ Certificate - the one they are going to be retiring in about 10 days in lieu of a new, upgraded exam.
220-301 and 220-302 is what I am taking.

My simple question is this:

This test is 5 years old, and has a lot of stuff about Windows 95 and SCSI in it, but it also covers 2000 and XP. Since 95 is basically gone, and SCSI basically is all-but gone, have they slanted this old test to cover more 2000/XP items, and less 95/SCSI items ?

I'm not looking for answers to exam questions, it's just that I am a 'read it and then do a memory dump for the exam' type of person - I can't read something 2-3 months in advance and remember it UNLESS I work specifically with it. I have to read everything and then take the exam within 3-4 days, which is what I am going to do.
The book is 1,100 pages, I just don't know if there is something I should spend more time on over something else..

Any advice from someone that has taken the exam in the last 6 months would be great.
And please don't say it's a worthless certificate - it's required where I am applying.

Also, as I said, if this question isn't allowed, remove it.

I did a bit of searching here on the forum but could not find any good information. My employer has recently put a policy in place where they are going to pay for a certification test and give us a bonus for passing the exam. Three conditions:

1. Pass the test or we do not get reimbursed for the cost and of course no bonus

2. We need to take the test by Jan 1, 2008....giving me just about 2.5 months to study and pass the test.

3. They are not paying for study material

So, for those who have certification, what did you use to prepare for the exam. Did you just go get a book at the bookstore and self study, did you buy a package online, did you pay a ton of money for a bootcamp?

Thanks for the information!

Let me get this straight.....

You have to pay for the cost of the course up front? Thats complete horse shit man. When you say they are not paying for study materials, do you mean like practice test or do you mean like books/classes/hardware/etc? Again, that's horse shit if they expect you to front that kind of money.

Are you required to get this cert to keep your job? If so, and they don't want to pay for it... Idd say book man. That place sounds like a garbage place to work.

Now, on to the positives:

2.5 months to take which cert? security+? CISSP? If you 2.5 months for the security plus, you will be fine... its a cakewalk. The CISSP can be done in 2.5 months but you definitely wont r... Read more

I was wondering, what's the average pay for such a certification (assuming one holds no other certs)? Overall, how would you rate the certification (in terms of, for example, A+ not being as useful anymore as others are)? I'm going to get the cert either way, but was curious if you guys had anything to say about it.

Nowadays every skill has a certification, like MCITP, CCNA and so on. What about the programming? For example, apart from the universal degrees, is there any certification on C++ programming language? Someone that wants to be employed in a e.g., company, will need it so much to prove his ability, I think.

Answer:Programming certification

In the "old days" you could sit for the CDP language and design exams through DPMA but I'm not aware of more modern certifications other than Microsoft's. A CDP certificate was as good as a doctorate to most companies. As it should be--The tests were pretty tough.

Hello, I work at a school where we use a filter program called BlueCoat this filter allows us to filter both http and https traffic. In order to accomplish this we are required to create an SSL certificate and install in on all our local machines. Without this certificate on the local machine the user is unable to use any SSL traffic. In Windows 7 and earlier installing the certificate in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities through internet explorer allowed the entire system to use that installed certificate. In Windows 8 installing the certificate this way only installs the certificate for Internet explorer and programs like the Windows Metro Store and Windows Update will not work because they are not seeing the SSL certificate. Is there someway to install the SSL certificate so the entire system can use it? I also tried installing it through the certification manager and still no dice.

Answer:IT Certification Primer

I think some of the Microsoft certs and some of the Cisco certs would be good, like the CCNA, CCIE, stuff like that.

I have currently been employed at the same company for most of my professional life. I do some top level desktop escalations as well as low level system admin functions. I have not had a need to get certifications since I hadnt planned on leaving. I do not have a college education and being a single parent that is not really a option to go back right now. I have about 7 years IT experience from helpdesk to what I do now. I have the basics. A+, Net+, XP MCP and 2 expired Altiris certs. The company is being bought out and we have basically been told we have about 6-12 months to have a job and then we will be paid a healthy severance and put on our way. I would like to set myself up to move into a full time Jr Admin position. I dont have endless supplies of time and money to throw into certs so i would like to be selective in what I do. I think I have a good resume with good measurable experience and now would like to add some things to at least get me some interviews when I need them. A MCSA would require the least bit of work for me since I use it daily. Keep in mind I will still be working my full time job as well as a part time and taking care of 3 children so least bit of work has its definite benefits. I am also considering the new low level Cisco cert for the same reason but it is hard for me to justify that when I know with just a bit of work I could go ahead and get a CCNA. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks

Any of you guys taken it? How difficult is the course/exam?

Job is offering to pay for it, wondering what to expect..

Answer:CISSP Certification

do you meet all the pre-requisites put in place by isc^2, i.e. number of years experience working in information security? i believe you can still sit the exam if you dont meet those criteria and as a result of which you will then achieve isc^2 associate status. if work are paying for it then grab it with both hands is what i say.

a guy who i work with is studying for it - he failed his first try by one percent, or so i believe. certainly not an easy certification to achieve - plus it requires an ongoing commitment to stay certified, by way of a points system i believe, that shows continued contribution to the security community.

it would certainly seem that there is more to it than typical 'paper certs' that seems to be so common nowadays. thats my two penneth anyway.

if you do decide to go for it then good luck
