Solved: network connection verified, but IE will not display pages

Question: Solved: network connection verified, but IE will not display pages

Hi. I am new here and hope someone can help me. I have a desktop running Windows Vista that I have had for 2 years with very minimal problems. I have internet through b2x, ethernet plugs directly into my computer, no router. I have had this service for about 6 weeks with no problems up to last week. I also have Magic JAck phone service. Last week the internet was out due to a server problem with my ISP. When I still could not connect on Tuesday of this week, I called back and was told that all of their problems had been resloved and I should not be having a problem connecting. They looked from their end and said that they can see my connection and it is working fine. I can go into my Network Connections properties & see the connection and see bytes being exchanged, but when I try to open Internet Explorer it tells me that it cannot display the web page. Also my Magic Jack will not connect...it gives me an error that says that there is no network connection, but as I said I can see that there is. When I try to diagnose the prob in IE, it tells me that windows cannot find a problem. I have restored everything that I can find to restore, reset every setting that I can find to reset, I have unplugged and rebooted more times than I can count, and still cannot connect. I did notice that there was a Windows Auto Update that was done last Wednesday (which is when this problem started), but I uninstalled that update and still no luck.

Does anyone have any idea what could be blocking these applications that they are not recognizing the network connection, or am I going to have to take this thing into a shop and have it looked at? I appreciate any and all suggestions very much...thank you for your time!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a Gateway NV59 that I had not used for some time. Recently I started to use it, and I cannot connect to any web pages. I am connected to my wireless network. I have tried all the diagnostic tests I can find on my laptop, and they do not identify the problem. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium. I have Explorer, Safari, and Firefox browsers and non of them will work. Does anyone have any ideas? I am a competent computer user, but not a techie at all.

Now then you lot. If anyone can solve this one, you can rate yourself above Dell Corporate and my service guy!

1. I re-installed WXP and all updates(including IE7)/programs and reinstated all my backed-up data to my main machine after installing new HD.
2. Plugged in my Dell Inspiron 1300 to my network cable and my network and broadband screens popped up as usual in the laptop and main machine trays.
3. Opened Outlook on the lap to check mail and got no the connection message and then IE and got Page Cannot Be Displayed.

Here's what I/Dell Tech and my service guy have tried:

1. Re-ran the network setup wizards.
2. Allowed third party browsing in IE7.
3. Pinged and ran all the check tests by sending packets.
4. Rolled back the OS and tried again.

No joy with anything. Tray still shows network and broadband present on both machines. Network connections are shown as excellent and fully functional. Any ideas please? I think I might be going insane....

Answer:Got network but won't display pages

Is browsing the only thing you can't do, or doesn't the network function at all? What was the result of the ping test?

If you are running a firewall, disable or uninstall it (temporarily)

Try resetting tcp/ip
Open a command prompt and type: netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

This is complicated by the fact the computer in question operates in spanish, and i don't know what the corresponding error in english would say. But we can't sign in to a google account on that computer. Firefox, chrome, and i.e. all put up warning screens. The one for firefox says in spanish, 'connexion no esta verificada'. It says you've asked firefox to make a secure connection to www.google.com, but the security of the connection cannot be confirmed. It says someone could be trying to supplant the site, and recommends not continuing.

We are scanning with eset. I tried removing gmail notifier, that didn't help. There is an option in firefox to continue despite the warning, but we chose not to do that. We've gone into the google account normally accessed on that computer and changed it's password.

What's going on here? Any thoughts?
thanks

Answer:browsers won't access google account, say connection can't be verified

Update - the scan with eset turned up no less than 5 suspicious files, related to a Mexico version of warcraft our nephew plays. However, after deleting those, the problem continued. We uninstalled Eset and installed Avast, and scanned again. That turned up another problem file, which was also deleted. Problem continued. We reinstalled Firefox, that didn't help. Next step is to reinstall XP, we need to do a fair bit of backing up first. But I would like to know what is happening. I'll try to look more for information on this error.

Just wondering if someone can help me.

I am useing Wiows XP Home.

Recently I haven't been able to access any web pages or even check my mail. I don't think its a connection problem because my computer is still sending and receiving heaps of data, way more than it should considering I'm not able to bring up any pages. In a 20 min session I usually download about 5mb and upload close to 20mb.

Some people have said it is spys but i have tried heaps of spyware programs but I can't seem to get anywhere.

Before this problem I had a problem with something called PERFECTNAV. I got rid of that but it still won't work.

I'd greatly appreciate any help because I'm very close to saving all of my files on to cds and starting from scratch.

Thanks, Chugger21

WHen the IE window comes up, no matter what URL is typed, we get the standard IE Cannot Display Webpage. I tried diagnosing connections. I know we are connected to the internet because Outlook and IM work. I've done scans (virus, malware, worm) and nothing shows up as being a problem. I've checked security settings and they are the way the were from what I can tell. I'm thinking something got changed somewhere along the line. I'm at a loss. I am by no means computer savvy. So assume complete ignorance at its finest for me when you respond.

I got a new HP laptop on SAt. I have tried everything to get it to connect to the net
. Whe I try to connect (diap up) it either takes 5 triesto connect or does not at all. When I do get a connection the web page usually can not be displayed comes up.
I have pinge my server and get 100 loss on the packets, I called them and they seem to not be able to help. They say it must be a modem problem. This can not be because I had the same exact problem with my new Dell desk top I bought several months earlier. The guy that helped me there has since left and I can not remember what all he did.
Called HP and they found no software problems. Tested modem and it is fine. I do not know where else to go for help.
Oh ya, at first they thought it was a firewall problem. I shut off Nortons fire wall and windows firewall is managed thru norton according to the computer. What now?

Hey everyone, I am trying to figure out why exactly none of my browsers will display web pages. Some background: I have swept for viruses with Avast!, AVG, and Malwarebytes; DNS works; DHCP works; All appropriate services are running; Any programs that connect to the internet to update work; Steam connects as well.

I cannot for the life of me figure out why it will not display a web page. When I type in www.google.com it tells me "Address is not valid". Although it won't display google or some well known sites, there are 4 different sites that it will connect to via my favorites. If you can think of anything, let me know.

Woke up this morning and something strange is going on. Computer was left on last night. Some of the major sites I go to (FB, Ebay, Google home page)only display in text. I have no idea what is going on. I rebooted the system and it's the same. attached are two screen shots of what I have for FB and Ebay, think you all know what it should look like. It's only a couple of pages, not everything. Everything except for a few pages displays just fine, that is what is strange. On my other computer things display normal.

Anyone have any ideas on this..a virus ...malwear ...??????

P.S. it appears to be only Firefox exhibiting this display issue.

www.recipezaar.com and www.foodnetwork.com don't display the buttons and stars for the recipes' reviewed. The pictures show up and the videos work.

I've cleared temporary internet files, deleted cookies, turned off McAfee security, added the websites to every place that IE will let me as trusted, etc. They display incorrectly in Firefox too. I've also checked the Hosts file. Recipezaar uses img.recipezaar.com to display these buttons.

Attached is the home page. If you look in the top right side, you'll see vertical lines. There should be buttons displaying there, like COOKBOOK, MY ACCOUNT, etc. Below is a screen shot of recipe reviews. There should be stars showing next to the recipe name (or Chef's name...not sure since I can't see them!!)

Currently I am using Mozilla Firefox and everything is working very well. However, I came across a page today that needed to be viewed in IE. I ran the program, something I haven't done in about a month, and the page did not load. After some experimenting, I found that no pages would load. I reverted all settings and it still would not work. All I get are 'page not found' errors. Any explanations?

I'm running Windows XP on a HP pavillion 7875, earthlink dial up connection.
I installed IE7 on my computer and can only connect to POP3 email, it cannot connect to any page. I tried to use XP's restore function but it will not restore to any time prior to the installation of IE7. I tried uninstalling IE7; it said it was doing so, but it's still there. (Somebody else posted that they'd unsintalled IE7 and it automatically reinstalled IE6; this didn't happen on my machine.) I tried taking my system disk and reinstalling IE from it; no effect, it's still IE7.
The IE7 error message offers "Diagnose Connection Problems"; when you click on it, a screen comes up that says "Welcome to Network Diagnostics for Windows XP This tool helps you identify and fix connection problems with your home network for computers connected to the Internet using a broadband modem (cable or DSL)." I feel this is a clue to the problem since as far as I know I'm not on a network and neither cable nor DSL is available where I am; I'm on Earthlink dial-up; I used to have a Direcway satellite connection; that satellite modem is disconnected but maybe IE7 thinks it's still there. Back before I got too poor for Direcway, an error message used to pop up that said "a network cable is disconnected" but everything always worked so I ignored it.

I went into the control panel/Internet options/connections and deleted my earthlink connection ... Read more

Hi All,

I have an issue which sounds much like one posted on 19th Feb, however my problem is on a new build, straight out of the box. FX 6100, GA-78LMT-USB3, HD5770, 4Gig non branded memory and W7 Ultimate 64 bit.

I saw this on the first website I visited, there were a number of images which only showed the top half and the bottom half was a mass of coloured pixels 'noise' covering the whole half of the image. On other websites small problems would be seen in different areas of the screen rips or tears and sometimes it would seem that the whole web page has been taken apart and each component is displayed consecutively down the left side of the screen.

I tried all the cache deletes, GPU acceleration, removed GPU and used on board VGA etc. It has to be software but I am at a loss, I have only installed OS, MS Office, MS SE and Chrome so if a re-install is required it's not a major issue.

Every other PC in the house is fine, if anyone has an idea I would be very grateful.

If any more information is required, please ask and I will provide

I have an HP G72 Notebook with Windows 7. My notebook is connected to my router, however none of my browsers open web pages. I have Internet Explorer and Firefox.

I've tried scanning in safe mode with AVG, Superantispyware, Malwarebytes, and Spybot. That didn't fix my issue. I have unplugged both my modem and router for a couple minutes and that didn't work. I've tried clearing my cache, that didn't work. I've tried disabling and enabling my network adapters.

I"ve gone to Wireless Connection Status > Properties > Internet Protocol Version 6 and Version 4 and both are set to obtin address automatically.

In IE I tried Tools > Internet Options > LAN settings and that is set to automatically detect settings
I also tried hardwiring the laptop to my router and still had the same issue. I know the router is working because my Playstation 3 can connect to the internet.

I'm currently posting this on another laptop since I can't open any pages.

Please help!

My network connection is ok but I can't get IE onto the internet. I am running Comodo firewall and AVG free version. I had internet access last week but not any more. I don't normally run Malwarebytes but got a virus and AVG wouldn't load up. Therefore, I ran Malwarebytes and it quarantined the viruses. After that situation I can't get on the internet. Malwarebytes doesn't normally run, I just use it as a backup - which did help to get rid of viruses because AVG wasn't able to run.

This is on XP and a Dell wireless laptop.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi I really need someones help,
I have recently moved home after living on my own. Whilst in my own house i was using Sky Broadband. Since moving home i have had to get a Belkin network card and arial. I couldn't get any connection at all, so i called Belkin and have managed to get a connection to my parents router.

However, when i try to load a page it says:

"Address not found
Firefox can't find the sserver www.google.co.uk

The browser could not find the host server to the provided address
Did you make a mistake when typing the domain?
Are you certain the domain exists?
Are you unable to browse other sites? Check your network connection and DNS server settings
is your computer or network protected by a firewall or proxy?Incorrect settings can interfere with web browsing."
Before moving out i had a connection using a Belkin wireless card and Arial.

I have tried turning my firewall off and this still doesn't work. I have also tried to use IE and this comes up with a similar error?

What culd it be? Can someone please help me i'm going out of my mind!

Your help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Hey guys and gals.

I have a customer's computer here thats driving me nuts. I've narrowed it down to a software/OS problem but I can't pinpoint it.

Running WinXP Home, Internet connection wasn't working at all with the onboard ethernet, so I threw a new PCI NIC card in. Operates just fine after boot, speeds are good, everything is peachy, until about 10-15 minutes after, not IE nor Firefox will load any web pages. At this point, the IP is still good, I can ping and tracert to any website of my choice with no problems, but the browsers both refuse to load anything.

As a note, it's not the new NIC card, I used two different (brand new) ones. It's also not the ISP's box or the cables, symptoms are the same at two different locations including my office and the customer's home.

Checked the entire thing extensively for viruses/spyware, it's clean as can be, tried a winsock fix, played with the network and NIC card settings for a good hour. I just can't figure this one out, and I really don't want to admit defeat and reinstall the OS.

Any ideas?

Is there a tool out there that displays the computer's network connection status' on the desktop?

Something like a red/green light for connected/not connected?

It would be sweet if it was dynamic and displayed in the gina login screen...

I have a bunch of users that can't seem to wait for their laptops to connect to a wireless network before attempting to login... Doesn't matter how many times I tell them to wait 10 sec they still complain that they can't login lol

Hi all,

This will be a simple question but there may not be a simple answer. I'm hoping it's just a registry setting that someone will know about.

I'm running Windows XP SP2 on my laptop. When it connects wirelessly to my network the balloon pops up over the system tray stating "Wireless Network Connection is now connected". This is a useful message (at least slightly) and I'd rather have it display, than not. However, the annoyance to me is that it seems to take forever to disappear on its own. I'd like it to fade out after about 5 seconds, and I'd also rather not have to click on the X to get it out of the way. (I know, I want everything and I want it right now! )

Is there a setting somewhere in the registry that controls the amount of time this balloon is displayed?

Thanks,

Bugwriter

Answer:Reduce Balloon Display Time for Network Connection Message

Hi Bugwriter and welcome to TSF !

I've never tested the following hacks so can't tell if they'll work or not but afaik they will apply to all the balloon tips in XP (like when you hover your mouse over a button to make a longer description appear), not just the network connectivity status balloon.

In the registry, navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify
There should be a dword called BalloonTip. Create it if it's not there. The lowest its value, the shortest time the tip will be shown.

To disable completely the balloon tips, navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
and create a new dword called EnableBalloonTips. Set its decimal value to 0.

Cannot connect to home wireless network with Toshiba Satellite laptop running Vista with SP2. Other family wireless devices working fine and good internet connection using ethernet cable from my laptop to router.

Problem just started today after trying public free wireless in airport early today. Would not connect and got a security certificate warning on another free internet network. So, did not use. Internet worked fine tethered to my phone.

I have an internal wireless g card and a usb plug-in wireless n adapter. Neither one works now. In network status section of control panel shows good network connection but red X before internet connection icon.

I ran a Norton scan and Malwarebytes scan in safe mode with no issues. Also tried to connect wireless in safe mode with no success.

Lastly I did system restore to a few days ago when wireless connection was working fine. No success there either.

Hi All

Please can anyone help??!! I have done something and I don't know what!

I have just bought a new computer, a compaq, running windows 7, AMD athlon (tm)IIx2 245 processor, I had no problems connecting it to the internet, it has a wired ethernet cable which plugged to my Thompson router and worked straight away. I also have a Toshiba satellite L350-170 laptop (running Vista) with wireless internet connection. At this stage I was getting internet on my new PC and wireless internet on the laptop.
The problem came when I tried to set up a home network, I have done it previously (on the old pc running Windows XP) with no problems, however I am not sure what I have done, but I can get internet on the PC but on the laptop it is connecting to the wireless network but not the internet.
In the network and sharing centre it shows the laptop connected to an Unidentified network but then there is a cross through the line connecting it to the internet. In Network and Internet, Network connections I double clicked on Wireless Network Connection and then on diagnose, I got a box with the heading - 'The network adapter "Wireless Network Connection" does not have a valid IP Configeration.

I am a bit bewildered what to do, and thought it better to seek help rather than fumble around in the dark!!
Hope someone can help

Thanks

I would like to download some software on there like Google Chrome, itunes, etc. But IE8 doesn't want to let me download anything without a "verified signature". How do I get around this? (I wasn't entirely sure where to post this question as I don't know if it is Windows 7 or Internet Explorer 8 that is the problem.)

The "two monitors" display, at the bottom right of my toolbar, that display Connection to the Internet, do not display instant connection speed.

I am told that with XP, it is supposed to display instant connection speed, when you hover over it. Is this right?

I think I installed some software from a company who I used as my ISP, and it changed this to display 100.00 Mbps ALL THE TIME.

Does anyone know how to get it to display the instant connection speed again, please.

I am running XP on a Toshiba Qosmio G25.

When I launch IE Explorer, I get the message "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".

When I first got the message, I thought maybe my wireless connection had dropped. However, I confirmed that I was connected with an "Excellent" signal strength and a status of "connected". I also noticed that Weather Bug had successfully connected to the Internet and displayed the current day's forecast. I tried launching another program that automatically goes to the vendor's Website and checks for the latest version. I got a message alerting me to the fact that a newer version was available and asked if I wanted to download that latest version. I successfully download the update.

I then checked "network Connections" and saw that the Internet Gateway and Networks all displayed "connected".

I then tried connecting via direct cable to my router and turned off the wireless access, but I still couldn't connect to the Internet through IE Explorer. However, my desktop cabled directly to the same router had no problems connecting.

I then thought maybe my version of IE Explorer had become corrupted, and tried loading a new copy but no change in results. Likewise, I tried using a copy of Netscape with the same results.

Can anyone offer a suggestion?

Thanks.

Try this too:
If you have XP-SP3 or Vista, you should use the built-in repair for the WINSOCK and TCP/IP stack. If you have XP-SP1 or earlier (and any previous version of Windows), you should use the Automated WINSOCK Fix all Windows Versions. I've included all the resets here.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Hi,
I have recently reinstalled XP pro on a PC and do not have internet connection using Internet Explorer or Firefox, I cannot ping either of my other two computers.
I have installed the Mother Board Drivers.

Device managed tells me that both network adapters are working properly, Local Area Connection tells me that I am connected although send/receive packets are about 1 (send) and 20 (receive) after an hour of being told there is a connection.

I multi boot with Windows 7 and a Linux system and they both have internet connection so it seems to be restricted to XP.

Any suggestions on what may be wrong would be appreciated.

Answer:Solved: display & network adaptors

Welcome to TSG:
The best place to get the drivers that you need is the pc maker's web site.In your case Dell.
So,go to www.dell.com.
Go to the support page. You should have written down,:
The service tag # of your pc.It is on the id tag on the side or bottom of your pc.
Go to the driver/download section of Dell support.
There you will enter your tag #.You will get a listing of the drivers that are available for your specific machine.
I would download /install in this order.
Chipset driver if available.
Then: drivers that Device manager indicates that you are misssing, including the network adapter drivers.
Might be handy if you print off a copy of device manager so you can tell exactly what devices you have by make and model #.Here is a way to get a printable copy for that.
Let’s take a look at the status of the network adapters

Device manager:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Please respond to all the following steps.
1. Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed.
2. Are there any devices under Network adapters that have a red x displayed?
3. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?
4. should be enabled and working properly.
5. If error code,what is it ?

It would be best if you could post a screen shot of Device Manager with the Network adapters and Other devices sections expanded.

Problem:

My Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop will not connect to any network, wired or wireless.

I'm running XP Home SP3 with a Gig of Ram.

Background:

I installed a trial version software (verified malware free) which also installed Microsoft .Net 1.1.

I uninstalled it using a third party uninstaller.

I soon discovered the uninstaller had successfully uninstalled the trial software, Microsoft .Net 1.1, Chrome and my wireless network connection.

IE, Firefox, Opera and Safari seemed untouched in that all would load. However all would give the Page not found error.

The wireless icon showed Connected & Excellent Signal Strength, but also Acquiring Network Address.

When a half hour passed without it gaining an IP I first disabled, then uninstalled my Antivirus, antispyware and firewall and ran "ipconfig /renew "

No change.

Ran sfc /scannow

No reported problems

Decided to try to connect to my router using wired connection, so I tried to enable the Windows Firewall.

Got this error message:

Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Service.
It is not possible to disable the connection at this time. The connection may be using one or more protocols that do not support Plug and Play or it may have been initiated by another user or the system account.

The only other system account is a limited one that's never been used (until I just checked to ensure I never had used it.)

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.

I have a similar problem. I plugged the ethernet cable into another computer and all works fine. So, I am sure that data is coming and going as it should.

When I plug it into the problem computer, the green light on the adapter comes on. And when I check the device manager the adapter shows up. When I click on it the message is that "This device is working properly".

I had to reinstall WinXP Pro SP3 and there is no sign of the network. When I ping the card as per post #12 it does not find anything. I did the no-brainer stuff like making sure that the card if firmly seated on the mother board.

Any help will be much appreciated.

My laptop, all of a sudden, will not connect with any other computer within it's workgroup. This is new behavior. It has always been able to do so.

In fact, when I go to "Network", when I click on any of the computers in the workgroup, I get an error message ... see the attached photo. I even get the error message when I try to open the shared file on the laptop which is named "Acerlaptop".

If I go to the other computers in the workgroup, I can actually open the shared files on Acerlaptop.

Going to the "Network and Sharing Center", I find that the connected network is "Private", Network Sharing is "On", File Sharing is "On", Public File Sharing is "On" and marked so that "anyone with network access can change and create files." Password Protected Sharing is "Off".

I can ping the other computers from the laptop.

Answer:Solved: Network Connection Problem

Well, this wasn't the solution I was looking for, but I decided to try a "System Restore" and it has worked.

But I found my firewall turned off (which I immediately turned back on) and, another surprise, now "Network Discovery" is marked as "Custom". I'm not sure what that means.

If the computer continues to cause me problems. next week it will get a complete reformat ... but that is undecided for now.

I've just done a fresh install of XP Pro. I'm having problems connecting to the internet using dialup, it's extremely fickle. The modem is working and makes the noise, and sometimes it will connect but most times not. Usually the connection dialog box just sits there after the modem noise stops for a few moments, then starts a redial. If it does connect, then whether or not it will be able to bring up a web page is hit or miss. Sometimes it says it can't do it, then a minute later it brings up the page w/no problem.

It isn't the ISP because I can connect to it w/no problem on another computer. I ran WinsockXPFix but that didn't help. I've looked at all the modem settings on both computers and I don't see anything different between the one that works fine and the one that doesn't.

Any help greatly appreciated,
Harold

Thanks,

We run a 30+ user NT4 network with 2 servers. The backup server runs Exchange, and also is used for file sharing. Yesterday, two users suddenly developed connection problems to the backup server (identical Gateway PCs). As far as I can tell, no configuration changes have been made (hw or sw), and the users are fairly trustworthy. The PCs are running Client for MS Networks, logged into our domain, and have NetBUI and TCP/IP configured. They can access mapped network drives on both servers, and seem to have no problems with the primary server. Outlook times out trying to connect to Exchange Server, Network Neighborhood & Find Computer either hang or take 5 minutes to find the network, printing to network printers on the backup server also hangs.

I've tried moving PCs, re-doing the network settings, re-configuring and changing the NIC, with no luck. No other users on the network are experiencing any difficulties. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Meg

Answer:{Solved} - network connection problem, NT4/W98

Took me the whole day, but I think I've got it figured out now. I found a couple of entries in the registry on both PCs that looked strange, disabled them, and the problem seems to have gone away. I'll have to do further checking and find out where the entries came from. Here's what I deleted:

[HKLM\SW\MS\Win\CurVer\Run]
bymer.scanner="c:\windows\system\wininit.exe"

[HKLM\SW\MS\Win\CurVer\RunServices]
distributed.net client="c:\windows\system\dnetc.exe" - hide

Anybody out there familiar with these?

If you haven't installed this and no-one else has responsibility or control over your system, then you have a problem. Are you part of a network which is administered from elsewhere?

Hello All,

I have a very strange problem and for the life of me can't figure it out.

Here's the deal: A neighbor gave me a computer to fix for him (lucky me). He said it wouldn't connect to the internet and he didn't know what was on it as he just got it from his brother. I said hey no problem - I'll format the drive and put a clean OS on it for you.

Here is the PC:
AMD 3000
Asus A8V Motherboard
1.5 gig Ram

So I F Disk the drive and install Windows XP Media Center Edition. I get all the drivers updated (via USB key) and try to connect to the internet but can't. The light on the Onboard NIC Card was lit up as well as my switch it was connected to. The connection in Network Places shows a disconnected network cable.

I figure hey - seen this a thousand times - bad onboard nic - try a card. I have a box of cards in the closet so I pull out 4 to choose from. I start going through them and with each one I get the same results - no IP address. For a sanity check I tried a different cable as well as plugged my laptop into the cable this PC was using - everything was great. So I know it's the PC and nothing else.

With one card it wouldn't attempt to Obtain an IP address with a generic message. Another mentioned not being able to get the TCP/IP settings from the card. This card did say it was connected though - strange. I know for a fact that not all 4 cards are bad as they were working when pulled from the machines they were in.

Hi everyone,

I think the network connection that's attached to my computer just died. Here's the problem:

I cannot access anything on my network including my router, modem, or the internet. I have a Linksys router and when I type in the usual 192.168.1.1 to access it, I get the "page cannot be displayed" message that I usually get when I'm offline.

In device manager, my connection is listed as "Intel(R) PRO/1000 CT Network Connection" and it has the yellow exclamation point on it. Viewing its properties shows this in the device status box: "This device cannot start. (Code 10)."

When I run ipconfig /all from a command prompt, Nothing appears below the heading "Windows IP Configuration." It's just blank.

Here's what I've tried (nothing worked):
- Installed updated drivers
- Uninstalled and reinstalled the hardware (twice)
- Followed the instructions on this page (http://forums.techguy.org/networking/617865-ethernet-tcp-ip-address-missing.html)
- Opened up my case and looked for signs of distress, but nothing stood out

Here's my computer info:
4-5 years old with Windows XP SP2 (and it still works great except for this)

I haven't installed, uninstalled, or configured anything unique before the problem happened. The only thing that happened before I noticed the problem was that there was a static discharge between me and the power button on the computer. This happened earlier today but didn'... Read more

My computer, running XP, has only a dial up connection. Nothing else available here. It used to be hooked up to a LinkSys router via an ethernet type cable. Cable went from back of desktop computer to router. It worked great, we had functioning slo-fi wireless. Then, the OS stopped working, so I reinstalled it, but the network connection that was set up got erased. Now, I have a new Belkin router. It doesn't want to recognize the internet coming into it through the cable. The computer says that the network connection is there, but has little or no connectivity. If I understand correctly, I am trying to figure out what I have to do to get my desktop computer to send the internet signal through the 10/100 ethernet port to the router. Does anyone know how to do this? Thank you for your help.

Greetings everybody,

beginning 30 minutes ago I began having problems with creating a connecting to ... basically anything on a Windows 7 Ultimate machine.

1.My internet connection is PPPoE via cable (user & password required), no modem or router inside the perimeter.
2.The problem I'm experiencing can be described by following these steps : Control Panel / Network and Sharing Center / Set up new connection or network / BLANK (no error, no freeze, no BSOD, no nothing, the button just doesn't work even though it's perfectly clickable).

3.Going to Control Panel / Network / Network and Sharing Center / Internet Options / Connections I also discovered that the Setup, Add, Add VPN & Remove buttons have the same behaviour, just don't work but are clickable.

All (apart from optional) Windows 7 updates are up to date.
The machine has already a PPPoE connection created and therefore is Internet connectable.

This of course prevents me from deleting the current connection (for I wouldn't be able to recreate it) nor to create new connections.

No Anti-Viruses or FireWalls installed, apart from Windows' default.
No internet enhancing related software installed either (e.g. Speed Downloader etc..)
No services previously disabled/enabled.
Malware/virus free machine (scanned with the latest Malware Anti-Malware & Spyware Doctor 2010).
So, does anyone know what could be the cause of voiding the functionality of those buttons ?

I am able to go in only one direction between the two computers on my Network. The Asus computer can access the Toshiba, but the reverse is not possible. I have attached two screen shots of the Network Places that, first, show the picture of the Network Places on the Asus. There are VMw-Player 'places'as well as those at Toshiba's own Ws7.

The second attachment is the screen shot of the VMw-Player "XP" Network Places, where only the 'places' within "XP" itself appear. Nothing for the Asus computer.

Both computers were operating simultaneously, and as stated above, the Asus could access the Toshiba both to Ws7 and to VMw-P "XP."

The network was set up as a "Workgroup" via the Asus "XP" system.

Been down this road before. All was once working well, thanks to folks here at TSG. Don't understand what has gone awry.

Thanks for your help, {redoak}

My apologies for the length of this but I felt I needed to provide sufficient details.
I am running XP SP3 on a Desktop and Laptop with internal wireless.
I used a TP-Link router flawlessly for at least 6 months. About 10 days ago I was not able to connect to my external hard drive (shared H Drive USB on the laptop) and was having problems getting the laptop to connect to the Internet. Then the desktop started getting erratic loading pages etc.. My first thought was the TP-Link was getting bad because “It is common knowledge that some routers die early”. I bought and installed a D-Link DIR-615 router last Friday and for a day it seemed to work, then same problem, for 4 days I called their Tech Support but had a problem with low audio volume from foreign people. I returned it today and bought and installed a Linksys WRT120N and still have similar problems with connecting to the H Drive from the Desktop; and the desktop won’t connect wirelessly.
I feel like an untrained mechanic changing parts because I don’t have the knowledge to fix the problem.

I believe I have more than one problem!

When I was trying to diagnose the problem after I installed the D-Link I thought it might be a Firewall problem. I discovered I can turn the Firewall on and off from Windows Live One Care, but when I open Windows Firewall in Control Panel I get a message “For your security some setting are controlled by Group Policy” on both Desktop a... Please help me here, I've been struggling with this for over a week now.

Basically, my setup is this....router -> switch -> server. I have a BT Business router, a netgear switch and a dell server running Windows Server 2008.

For the last week, the clients AND the server drop internet connection EVERY 5 minutes. The connection goes out for about a minute then returns, then goes again in 5 minutes.

I've done everything I can think of, changed the router, changed cables, resolved dns issues....nothing else I can think of.

I just now noticed that the port on the switch where the router is connected is showing an amber light. Not sure if this has anything to do with it, but if anyone has exoerienced this before or you have any ideas on how to reolve this, I'll be grateful. Thanks in advance.

Yesterday, I cloned my boot drive, and installed the new clone. Everything works perfectly, except - ZoneAlarm lost all it's settings, and my spouse's Win 98 computer can no longer see my machine. After fixing ZA by setting the local network's ip range as trusted, I can connect to his computer and even browse his files. But he cannot even see my machine.

I can't think of anything further to do. No changes were made to the '98 machine. No changes to network settings were made on this machine - except as noted.

What else should I be looking at?

Answer:Solved: Lost network connection

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

For each of the two computers, I'd also like to see this:

Hello,

I'm getting lost in forums that are similar to my problem, but nothing seems to work really for my situation. I recently did a clean reinstall of Windows XP (Media Edition) and now I cannot connect to the internet. In my network connections I only have one "1394 Connection" and no "LAN Connection" like I was expecting. From other forums, it appears that the drivers are not installed or something for my network card and that is why I don't have that connection icon. Now... I've tried to find out what drivers I need for my network card and I have no idea. The internet worked before on my computer so I'm a little confused with what has gone wrong suddenly. I don't know how to determine the manufacturer of the card is to find a driver. I'm thinking that maybe I have an on-board LAN or something because I don't see anything that looks like a network card inside the computer. I've figured out that my motherboard is an MSI (MS-7046) but I don't know how to find out if it's on board or what. I feel like I'm going around and around in circles and not sure what to do. Maybe I'm completely off track. Any ideas? Thank you so much for your help. I really appreciate anything!

Cheers,
- Monica

I'm not terribly familiar with network connections, so please forgive me if I don't use the correct terminology (my partner's the brains in this area, but this has stumped him.

Basically what happened was we have several computers connected to a server, and for some reason we cannot figure out (it wasn't shutdown any differently than the times before, and nothing was added to it, no hardware, software, anything, it just refused to connect) we started up one of the computers and it refused to connect to the server, or online access, or anything across the network. I thought maybe it was IP setting, but that seems to be ok. My partner has tried a few things, but nothing has worked with getting this computer online.

I know it's not alot of information, but if you tell me what else you need to know, I will provide it. Oh, we operate on windows 98SE.

Answer:Solved: Lost connection on Network.

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt.

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands:

PING each remote computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. Open a command prompt as described above and type.

PING <ip address>
or
PING <computer name>

Where:
<ip address> - is the x.x.x.x IP address
<computer name> - is the computer name

A failure to PING is almost always a firewall configuration issue. Any failure to PING needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Note: You can obtain the IP address and computer name of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG /ALL. This should work for any Windows version. The IPCONFIG /ALL display will provide a wealth of useful information for debugging your network connection.

Hello all!

I have one strange problem which I would like to hear your opinion.
So..there are about 30 computers in my clients network and everything worked great. All computers (3 of them are wireless and rest over good old UTP are going to Internet through router/modem. It's a ADSL connection.

Last week we noticed that every morning 4 computers are being disconnected. When we checked them there was LAN connection disabled. All I did was click to enable and it worked for whole day. Next morning there was the same problem. Again, same four computers were disconnected with LAN disabled.
Is there any suggestion what to check next??
Computers are clean, no viruses, spyware etc. Those 4 computers are sharing one additional switch so tomorrow I'll try to change it and see how it goes.
Thanks in advance,
Cheers..

We have a laptop (running windows 7) that keeps dropping the network connection, by replugging the cable it will reconnect.

-Tried wireless & Wired (Both drop)
-Tried different ports on the router
-Joined another network on another location (No drop)
-Disabled Anti-virus/firewall
-Reinstalled Driver

Because it drops on both Ethernet & Wireless i dont think it is related to physical problems.

It has previously been working fine before this and no other computers are behaving this way. There might be a simple explanation for this but the search was to broad to get a decent answer, thanks!

Answer:Solved: Dropping network connection

Sounds like it could be a problem with your network card, if it's only one computer doing it. Have you tried other computers on the same network? If those don't work, it could be your modem and not your router. Is your cable on a splitter? That could be a problem too.
