Question: Solved: Internet connection slow, downloading slow

Hi all,
I have 2 computers, a Dell laptop and a Dell Desktop, they are recently new, have been working fine, they both have Vista. Just as of late last night the internet connections have been poor, either not connecting at all or slow. I have AVG 8.0 but it has not found any viruses....any help would be appreciated. thanks,

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Solved: Internet connection slow, downloading slow

Hi Dano.
Are both pc's hardwired or one wireless through your router?
Are both slow at the same time?
Have you tried eliminating the router and hardwiring one pc directly through the modem.(will require a power on reset of the modem)?

Do a speed check
www.speakeasy.net/speedcheck
Any recent hardware/software changes?
Any error msgs ?

Is this cable or DSL?
Knowing some of these things will assist the techs here to delve further into the problem.

Hi, My internet is very slow. I have a asus k8v-se deluxe motherboard, and im starting to think that its the onboard ethernet port thats slow. Im directlly conected to a linksys wireless n router( the fastest one out) and all the other computers in my house go pritty fast. I just reformated my hard drive and wiped my computer completely so i shouldnt have the same problem...... but do. So if someone anyone has any suggestions as to what i should do, shoot! or if you can finda link to a fast ethernet internal card that would be great. I want to use all of my router, its 12x the speed of G. so i wanna put that to the test......... please help me. thanks -Nick

firstly sorry if i have posted this in the wrong place.
about a month ago i changed my isp from wanadoo/orange to talktalk. after the switch i noticed my connection was slow and i was unable to access some sites, they just wouldn't load. after much help from talktalk they said the problem was with my pc and suggested i try a laptop to confirm this. they were correct and suggested a virus scan. i have done a througher scan using avast and deleted anything it found but it is still the same. i have tried a system restore, but no change. i was going to re-install my os as i thought this would solve my problem, but having read on here about how to do it, the sticky seems to lead me to believe i am better off trying to solve the problem.

many thanks in advance. gary

I have a question. I have two computers. Mine is connected through a modem, I have Verison DSL service and the other is my boys computer which is connected with a Netgear WG311v3 Mbps Wireless PC Card. Sometimes the boys computer connects no problem and other times it is horrible and slow. I went into the Netgear Wireless Assistant to look around. But I'm not sure if I change anything in here, if it will help.

Ok....in Settings....Network Name (SSID) is set to ANY (First available Network), under that in the dropdown menu there is Netgear and laur-wireless. Network Type is set at Access Point (infrastructure)....only other option is computer to computer (Ad Hoc), and if I click Computer to Computer I have to initaite Ad Hoc, whatever that entails.

Under the Networks tab: Network Name...Netgear has 100% signal, mode is access point. Laur-wireless has 17% signal, mode is access point also.

The other 2 tabs are statistics and about. Don't really give anything there to change.

These computers are in adjacent rooms, not far apart at all. How can I get the boys computer up to speed? Also, both are brand new computers with 512 mb ram in each.

Will you let me know your thoughts on this??

Hello to all, I need some help. My ISP (Cox cable) discontinued using DOCSIS 1.0 modems so I had to replace my Toshiba PCX2000 modem and bought a Toshiba PCX2600 DOCSIS 2.0.
My computer is a P4 - 3.8 GHZ, 2 GB Ram, Win XP Pro, Atheros L1 Gigabit 10/100/1000Base-T controller on motherboard. Cable modem connected to computer with no router, my contracted speed with my ISP is 10 MBps.
The problem is that when I connected the new modem my download speed is limited to only 0.14 MBps download and 0.14 MBps upload.
I contacted my ISP and they said all was fine on their side, they even sent out a tech to my home to check the signal and all was fine, the tech told me I had a defective modem so I took it back and got a replacement (Same model), hooked it up and the exact same thing happened 0.14 Mbps up and download, after 2 new modems I know that problem is not the modem it has to be something within windows or hardware on my pc.
This is now driving me nuts being at dialup speed.
Any ideas on what the problem could be?

My computer starts to the desktop and then just sits on it. The little red x in the bottom tray shows I am not connecting to the internet. It takes several minutes for tye x to leave and connect. Once I do all is fine. one tech said to replace the yellow cable-- that didn't help. The server said all is ok on their testing and it may be weather related- the weather is fine. I have vista home edition and internet explorer 9 but i don't think that is the problem. I have a dell 531 desktop. Does anyone have any ideas whyI have to wait so long for connection. My modem lights are all on when this happens.
Any ideas to speed up the internet connection which used to be pretty fast. Does a new hard drive effect this that a tech installed ? I have ATT black modem 7550

Hi. How are you? I am coming here because I'm going to attempt one more time. And then I'm going to call it a lost cause.I have aDell Latitude computer running windows 7. I have Google Chrome as my default browser. It is the easiest to get around in for me, and has tools for all of these popups that are in exitance. I have a question that I doubt has any real good answers, or any answer that is going to help, but I will go ahead and waiste these next few minutes just to see what happens. I LOVE YouTube. But YouTube I think is at the end of its time with me. I now have moved to a place that has a slightly slower speed and It is using Windstream. I now have PROFOUND problems browsing youtube because it is PROFOUNDLY SLOW.

REALLL slow. I have a question. Does anybody know of something in existance that would make it faster? I've checked my computer for bugs. NONE to be found. Cleaned it up. I've got ReadyBoost Activated, and I'm using chrome. Any suggestions or tools that would allow me to browse Youtube, and do all of the functions/features involved in YouTube like the PlayList Abilities such as AutoPlay and Auto-Repeat? ANYTHING? Oh, I Defragmented it too. And deleted other programs that I wanted to delete. Still profoundly slow. Internet Explorer isn't happening. BAAAAAD IDEA. Tried it. We're talking about Taking the definition of Profoundly slow to new and dangerous levels. Thank you very much. Sorry for waisting your time, and God Bless.

Hello, i'll be grateful if you could help us with a problem that we are having with our laptops at home. Let me to explain you, my wife have his own laptop at home, as I have mine laptop too, both of the computers share a wi-fi internet conection. I'm not sure of what's going on but the internet conection it's extremely slowly, sometimes when we reboot our laptops there is no internet conection. According to our ISP there's no problem with the internet conection, they said it could be something with the laptops.

Now, It's true that the two laptops are more slowly, specially my wife's laptop, it takes too long for any processes, I always take a look to the running processes and it seems like there are too much process always but I'm not sure of what is good and whats isn't.

I decided to attach The HiJack log from my wife's laptop, maybe with this you could help us to figure out what's going on.

Thanks for your time!

Hey Guys,

I don't know what to make of this because I scan my computer with Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware (both downloaded from download.com) every day and the only way to speed up is to revert to an earlier point with the recovery tool from HP. I'm also getting a very quick connection just after I've rebooted my laptop. Things take very long to load as well. The thing that gets me though is that it's not everything on the computer that acts this slow it's anything internet related like firefox and downloading that's extremely slow. Everything else is still running very well and quick. If you've got any tips please let me know.

Answer:[SOLVED] Very slow internet connection with Windows 7

Hello,

It sounds like you have some things running on startup that don't need to be. When you have it running slowly, use this utility and run tasks #5, 6 and 9: http://cid-120d9bfa03f629fd.spaces.l...29FD!184.entry

Also, if you don't mind, download and run AutoRuns from here: http://live.sysinternals.com/autoruns.exe

Once it loads completely, click File>Save... and save it to the Support folder that the utility above makes on the Desktop, then zip it all up and attach it to your next post.

I have two WinXP32 machines on a wired network to a Liinksys router which is connected to a DSL modem. I have the network connection on both PCs setup to put the icon in the tray. Before the last few weeks, the network connection icon would pop up within 30 seconds after reaching the desktop and work fine. Now it is taking 5 - 20 minutes for the network to show up, and for the browser and email to work, Once it is working, speed is no issue. If you try to start Control Panel, then Network Connections, it just hangs until it decides to run (once again 5 - 20 minutes). Rebooting the modem and router have no effect.

One other item of interest: this PC is a dual boot WinXP 32 and x64. Booting up in x64 has no issues in quickly connecting and working right.

Virus? Malare? Have run Kaspersky for over two years, along with Windows Defender. Running them from the x64 partiion to check the XP32 partition reports no virus or malware.

Any suggestions on other things to check?

I have had vista on my computer for about 4 months, and my internet connection has worked fine with it. But on Tuesday night started to get really slow response from my adsl connection. I unplugged everything, and reconnected, still the same, ran anti-virus and spyware programs, still the same. My speed is worse than dial-up. downloads are taking forever. I have 1500/256 plan. downloads are around 3 -6 kb per sec. It doesn't matter what page I am on. Rang ISP provider and they tried to tell me that it was the phone line. Checked everything myself, everything is fine. Wanted to charge me $105 just for coming out, so I said that I would work it out for myself. I also have XP installed on my computer as well, so I switched between Vista and XP, and on XP my internet is working fine, getting the speeds that I should. So the problem has to lie with Vista. But I'm not sure why it has worked fine for 4 months and now it doesn't. Hope someone out there can shed some light on this for me.

I live in a converted garage at the end of a garden which has a wired connection to the router in the main house. The connection speed is spotty and fluctuates between downloading at around 100-200kBs and having a ping of around 30 in online games (rare) or download rates measure in bytes (normal). Google takes about 10 seconds to load and I can't access steam. I was wondering if this was due to the length of the cable running the length of the garden (about 20m) or some other issue - it is not the computer as I get the same result with my laptop and my desktop, both of which have no trouble when connecting in the main house.

Thanks!

I live in Barcelona, my provider is Telefonica. I have a D-Link router that works perfectly. I use it for both my desktop and my laptop internet connections. My laptops connection works fine.

Yesterday my desktop worked fine. I had no problem with my connection. However today, for no reason at all, my connection sucks. I am connected but when I launch my browser the browser will start and the page will JUST NOT LOAD, it just stays blank and then the page loads partially and then gets stuck again. I am checking my LAN connection and I can see that I am receiving and sending packets, but in spurts. It seems that my connection is not flowing. It sends and receives packets sporadically and then seems to stop. Meanwhile while this is happening with my desktop, my laptop (that is using the same router) works fine. connections fast.
It just slow or non existent with my desktop. I can't even run applications like FullTilt poker or Pokerstars.
Yesterday my computer was fine and today not. I have not downloaded any software or done anything differently.

Please help, any advice will be appreciated. Thanks

When I restart my computor it takes a long time for the desktop to appear and then I cannot open anything for another 15 to 20 minutes. I can highlight the icon but nothing happens then eventually it will open up. When I click on EI it takes several minutes to begin to open but always freezes before opening. I have to cntr, alt delete it and try again. Usually works the second time. It may or maynot freeze while surfing

Two day ago, my internet speed dropped to a crawl. I have done everything I can think of. I called my ISP provider (DSL), no problems. I ran spyware and anti-virus programs. I did a Disk Cleanup and Disk Defrag.

I tried to download some programs to help with this but either something is wrong with the downloading or it takes so long to download that the file is corrupted. After I download a file such as PC Pitstop (I have tried several) then when I try to execute the file I get the message that the "Publisher Could Not be Verified" so I go ahead and check to run anyway then I get a message that the "filename.exe is not a valid Win32 application" or I do not get a message at all - nothing happens.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Answer:Slow Connection And Downloading

You need to be a little more detailed. How much memory do you have all together and how much have you used?. what is the total capacity of your hard drive and how much have you used? Have you cleared all the cache? at this point it could be hardware or software. I had incident where i had to many anti spyware programs (7 to be exact) and it was slowing my computer. Once i removed some of them, it was working properly.

Does having too many things plugged into the router slow internet down? For example: I have my wireless adapter for my xbox upstairs plugged into the router downstairs and then I have the computer plugged into that and the xbox downstairs also plugged into it (all one router). I don't know why, but the computer upstairs is much faster than the one downstairs, which is connected in the router in which many things are connected in. There is a wireless router on the one upstairs. Also, (if you can answer this), what you do on the computer, could it also affect the connection on xbox live? I don't know what category this goes in, but I'll just ask here, if you'd be so kind to help.

Answer:Solved: 2 many things in router slow internet connection??

The only way the devices would slow down each other's connection down would be if you were using them all at the same time accessing the internet. If you were downloading every image on Wikipedia and playing Xbox Live, it would be slow. If the devices are just on (idling) , though, it shouldn't affect it.

In Australia, I use Bigpond (Telstra) and the standard cable connection is now almost as slow as dialup!

Rumours abound that Telstra is deliberately slowing the speed to sell more ADSL2 and Cable2 to customers. Knowing them, it doesn't surprise me in the slightest!

Anyhow, after browsing all the forums, I stumbled across a suggestion to download and run an application called TCP-Optimizer.

http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php

Oh well, might as well give it a go............

Unbelievable, with two clicks of the menu buttons, I now have an internet connection that literally flies.

In laymans terms, click on a new website and it is displayed in about one - two seconds!!!

I still sit here thinking this can't last but so far after 24 hours it continues it's magic!

Another PC on this network also benefitted and is lightning fast!

And nah, I don't own any shares in the company!!

Hi,

Windows XP Home
Dell DIM4400
Windows XP Home SP2
Verizon DSL
Firefox 1.5.0.12
IE6 (uninstalled IE7 last year)

Spybot....NO problems found (all Green)
Ad-Aware....found one MRU...deleted it.
AVG AV Scan....NO virus infection found.

I noticed last evening while cruising around the net that pages were loading slower than normal (up until then have had NO problem with my DSL).
This morning there was a point where I could NOT make an internet connection at all.

I called Verizon a couple of times and at one point was told I might need a new NIC card (although the "more knowledgeable" tech I just spoke with said my NIC card is ok and she thinks something else (Software?) might be the cause.)

I shut the computer down and this afternoon started it up again and had a connection but, a very slow connection.
Normally my Verizon DSL gives me around 1650Kb/s Download and 550Kb/s Upload.
At last check I'm getting less than half those speeds.

It's been a LONG time since I've had someone check my HJT...
could you see if there's anything in there that could be causing a problem while I continue with other Troubleshooting?

Thank you

I'm getin a 20mb optic cable Internet connection from virgin which userly runs about 15mb on a speed test with no other internet using software or devices in the house.
Today (9pm uk) I've been downloading a torrent which is on 20-90kb/s which is a little odd as some torrents can be as high as 1mb although i understand it depends a lot on the torrent itself.
The problem is while I'm downloading this torrent I'm unable to do the simplest of tasks and even getting on this website has been a hassle and it's imposable to even connect to spotify, let alone stream from it.
Is this normal for a 20mb connection? Is there somthing wrong with it or am i just expecting too much of my connection?

Btw i'm not very good with internet things so if you can advice some sort of solution don't be afraid to dumb it down

Thanks for listening to my troubles and hope to hear from anyone willing to help.

I just bought a new Dell Inspiron 530 desktop with Vista Home Premium pre-installed. Everything works fine except my internet, its slow, and I mean really slow. I checked all the connections and everything is connected properly (is not using wireless), checked with my service provider, made sure everything was up to date, uninstalled Mcafee and disabled firewalls, switched browsers, rebooted modem and checked for driver errors (updated drivers).

I have also checked the internet speed using a different computer from my home using the same modem, its 3 times as fast, and this is using a seven year old SUNIX, which has Windows 2000 as an OS, my vista should be heaps faster.

Thus leading me to the conclusion that the problems lies eaither with Vista or my computers Hardware.

I have tried everything I know and it still wont work and I swear to god I am going to start pulling hair out soon. So if anyone could shed some light on this dilema it would be great!

((If you need any info on my computer just ask and I'll happily post))

Hello,

I am having issues with my internet. It is very frustrating because I occasionally appear to solve the problem and the internet becomes very slow and loses connection temporarily. Sometimes a couple times a day this occurs where the internet gets really slow and some pages load halfway and occasionally the internet just goes out all together. This issue is particularly odd because it appears that my laptop is the only one that gets this issue. There are two other laptops that do not appear to have this issue using the same connection. I have previously tried updating my drivers and other windows updates. I have also reset my router settings, moved my laptop to a different locations, changed channels on my router, and none have worked as of yet.

Any ideas to solutions for this issue would be largely appreciated.

Thank you.

Yesterday, I downloaded a chinese media player, so I can play those chinese movies on a website. But I didn't like it, so I uninstalled it. But after I uninstalled it, I found that my internet connection was going slower than before I installed the program. I could only access some websites, like Google, but it's extremely slow. It used to take only half a second to load Google, but now it takes up to a minute just to load Google! I tried going to other sites, and I can only access some, but it takes forever to load them. 95% of the sites just display the "Page cannot be displayed" message. I thought it was spyware, so I did a scan with Spybot, but nothing was found. Nothing else is wrong in my computer except for the internet. I scanned many times, but nothing was found. Anyone have any idea what I could do?

By the way, only web pages won't work (tried accessing web pages in both IE and Firefox, but no luck). Programs requiring access to the web, like Windows Live Messenger works without problem. Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone!

Hello guys,

I posted this under the software thread as well, but maybe this is a more appropriate place . . .

This is the deal. I got on here a while back because my parents suffered a lightening strike which rendered their computer worthless.

After the great input on here, I replaced the PSU and the motherboard and blam, $140.00 later the computer started.

However the internet connection (cable broad band) was so incredibly slow it would not open any web pages other than something simple like: Google.com or yahoo.com, etc. Click on a story or the weather and nothing.

So I contact the internet provider (Insight Cable) and talk with their tech support that ran multiple tests. They seemed to think that there was a virus problem.

I ran the parents ZONE ALARM and it found 85 virus and 19 spy ware programs. It could not treat or fix the viruses.

My parents are elderly and only use the computer to check email and cruise the net. They are completely computer illiterate. They may have inadvertently been cruising the net with Zone Alarm turned off . . .

Regardless, the computer is:

Dell 4600, windows XP home
2.8 Pentium
1 gig ram

Today I loaded the Dell XP, OS, disk. I did not repair; I formatted the hard drive and loaded everything back onto the computer, i.e., drivers for video, sound, Ethernet, etc.

I loaded the cable modem drivers and established a connection.

However, the internet connection is still stupidly slow. I can't connect to say a "complicated&qu... Read more

Just recently started to notice the speed of my connection has greatly slowed down! I am on a desktop PC that is using a linksys wireless USB adapter to connect to my router. I looked at the speed and it was like 18mbps when it used to be like 54mbps. Now my laptop on the other hand if i have it right where i have the same desktop pc connects to the router and receives a speed of 54mbps. Whats going on here? why did my desktop pc suddenly get slower? Its prolly just a coincidence but right after I installed frostwire it seemed like thats when it got slower. (no frostwire isnt running and thats not why it seems like my connection is slower). But there isnt really a way that an application could cause my actual connection speed to slow down is there? The only thing that i can think of is that my linksys wireless usb adapter is going bad or something? does anyone have any ideas, or suggestions on what is going on here??

Hi!
I have been having a major issue with my internet.

I will try to provide as much information as possible.

First of all:
-I have cable internet, my ISP is Charter
-I have 2 Computers. 1 Laptop and 1 Desktop. And i have an old desktop computer.

Tech Specs.>

Laptop:XPS M1530, customized at www.dell.com than 2 months old
-Its OS is Windows Vista Home Premium
-Processor: Intel Core, 2 Duo, T8300 @ 2.4GHz
-RAM/Memory:4GB
-64 bit operating system
-500GB of Hardrive space

Desktop(new): Studio XPS 435MT
-Its OS is Windows Vista Home Premium
-Processor: Intel Core, i7 920 @2.67 GHz
-RAM/Memory:6GB
-64 bit operating system
-1TB of Hardrive Space(1000~GB)

Desktop(old)ell Dimension 8200
-Its OS is Windows XP
-Processor: N/A(i am somewhat unable to use the machine at the moment, thus we purchased new computers...)
-RAM/Memory:256MB
-less than 40GB of Hardrive Space
*Both have McAfee

Ok, so the problem. I am able to connect both the laptop and the desktop(new) to the internet through my modem and what not. However, during web browsing, online gaming(even the simplest of games that only require as little as a dial-up connection.), downloading, and updating. When im browsing the web, Internet Exploror and Mozilla Firefox say that they cannot display the webpage(the typical) Task manager reads out a 100Mbps network speed for "Local Area Connection. It also reads out that the state is "connected". Under Control Panel, in Network and Sharing center it says im am co... Read more

My computer runs very slow and I notice that on my computer properties it say I have 37.2BGB and 31.2used with 6.04free. My question is would this cause my computer to run slow. I don't know where the ram is going because I don't download. I just surf the web and play games online. I do have alot of $KB---$, KB--- files that I was told are log files. Can I safely delete this files now. I did a highjackthis on my computer and received help deleting programs and files that where not needed. But I was not sure if they said it was ok to safely delete this files as well. Because i do have alot of them. My computer is Toshiba Laptop Intel(R)Celeron(R)M 2002 Service pack 3 processor 1.60GHz, 504MB or RAM. I know I have asked alot but I am very frustrated not knowing what or how to fix this.

Hi every one,

I'm using windows Vista and all the windows products that use a internet connection suddenly went very slow. Viewing a webpage with internet explorer on a fast connection takes up to 10 secondes, but the same page with Firefox (no-cache) loads in one or two seconds.

I've got the same problem with Windows Mail, Live Messenger, ect. All the non-windows products like gmail notifier and Winamp are fast as usual.

So now and then i'm also getting an error that "Rasman" doesn't work correct and that it's being stopped.

I'm using good anti-virus software and use my pc only for browsing "normal" website's (no warez and stuff) and reading my e-mail. Also I haven't installed any program or update.

To fix the problem I've tried the following things:

1 - Installer services pack 1. Didn't make any difference.
2 - Try to turn back to a windows backup point. Wasn't possible anymore due the services pack install.
3 - Kickt RASMAN out of the registry
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\25 and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\26)
But this also didn't make any difference so i've placed the subkeys back.

Does anyone have any idea what I could try next?

Chears,
Dirk

I'm hoping someone can help me. This is my first post. I have been fighting my internet speeds for several weeks now, and Verizon wireless has not been any help. I have a HP Pavillion running XP Media Center. I use a wireless usb modem like you would on a laptop, only I use it on a desktop, so it never moves. I have great cellular signal with it, but my speeds stink up the place. I test at speedtest.net. I have run spybot S&D to try to clean up any spyware (didn't find much), I have run Windows Definder. Ok I hope somebody here will be able to help.

The majority of the time I have ok speeds. My router configuration page says around 3MB, download speed via speedtest.net is around 2.5MB on average.

When I try to download something from utorrent or download/update an MMO application the speed drops. The torrent or MMO will show speeds of maybe 20kb/s and upon running speedtest it will reflect the same. Even after closing utorrent or the MMO application the speed will still be slow.

After doing cmd ipconfig /release and /renew my speed will speed back up and speedtest will reflect this. Just to slow down again if I attempt to download again.

I use IE8 and Firefox 3.6.15
Tried windows firewall and AVG firewall.

My service provider is Sky BB unlimited.
3.2 i5 CPU 6GB Ram, Win 7 64 Bit, built-in Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller.

I don't believe it is the hardware causing the problem.

If anybody has any suggestion it will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Answer:Slow internet when downloading

Greetings.

I would like to download the latest version of Windows 10 and keep it in my pen drive. The normal way to do that is download it using Media Creation Tool and download the iso. But the problem here is my internet connection, which is damn too slow. It takes about 40 hours to download the whole 3-4 GB file. I have to use my internet for other purposes, hence cannot dedicate my entire bandwidth for 40 continuous hours to Windows 10.

I've been through the download process before, I wanted an iso of the anniversary update. I did download about two-third, and boom, power-cut. That's another problem in the place where I live. We have power outages. Randomly. It started downloading again from the start. So it took about 6 days to download. And I could not use my PC's net for anything else. I could but it was terribly annoying. I also play few online games. That was completely impossible in that week.

Now the question: is there any way to (reliably) pause or limit the download rate? Or any priority system so as to give my browser or steam higher priority than Media Creation Tool. I'm okay with keeping my pc on for more amount of time.

Answer:Help regarding downloading Windows 10 on a slow internet.

Hello

If there is a PC repair shop near your home , they should have high speed internet and be glad to download it for you while you wait. Bring proper media to save it and pay them for the time, which should be very little $$.
good luck!

Hello,
I have an XP Home pc that's experiencing slow internet and slow OS. I also had a problem with Comcast mail. They put a block on my account saying it was sending bulk mail when I didn't even know it was doing that. They mentioned it could be spyware. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

for about the last week or so i have noticed Windows is taking a lot longer to boot than usual. upwards of 4+ minutes.

i have run an AV scan, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scan, Spybot S&D scan and cleaned up trash with CCleaner. i disabled all unnecessary services except for Avast which still runs the engine even though i disabled all the shields.

there were a few infections found which i was able to quarantine and delete.

my system is:

This is my second thread, regarding my internet connection.I have a wireless connection and a d-link router.I have a 1 mb connection in which download speed is usually - 125kb/s and upload speed is 9 or 10 kb/s.I could easily watch online movies without buffering.
But,Recently while watching a video it buffers like after every 3-5 seconds. And while downloading stuff(via torrent) it is very slow and the download speed shown is 1kb/s , which is very very slow.I think the is caused by a software called tcp z(it patches tcpip.syc, according the users limit). The changes made by it are temporary and only occur till shutdown. But,I m not sure by what it might be caused by.
So please can anyone help me out regarding this.Suggestions and advices are welcome .

Having browsing & downloding problem with my new computer. AMD Anthlon XP 2600+, Gigabyte KT333/400 + Raid/USB 2.0 512Mb DDR, Realtek RTL 8139 /810 Ethernet connection to NTL set top box broadband 150Kbps etc and using Windows XP Pro. Internet browsing /download is extremely slow. Sometimes it can't access pages or hangs. Several seesion with NTL Techicians showed that server / connections are ok, but problem continues. Yet everything works fine on my P3 450MHz, similar ethernet connection but with Windows XP Home. These 2 computers are independent - not networked. However, why i took my problematic computer back to the assembler, and used on his NTL set top box, but IMb broadband, all was ok. Please can you help.

Newuser768, I'm no expert in this area but I have read somewhere that the built-in XP Firewall is defaulted 'ON' in the Pro version where as it is 'OFF' in the Home version. If you are using your own Firewall then make sure the XP firewall is disabled.Just a thought.

Hi there! The other night I downloaded about a gig and a half of music from Limewire. The next morning I noticed that my computers internet is running very slow. It takes FOREVER to load a page and I eventually get a error message like this one:

Server Not Found:

Firefox can't find the server at www.techsupportforum.com.

* Check the address for typing errors such as
ww.example.com instead of
www.example.com

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

I thought it might have been my free Advast Virus protection, so I deleted it after running a full virus scan and got nothing in return.

I have a Windows XP

Downloaded off of Limewire with Peer Guardian Lite running.

I am so frustrated! Help me! :)

After upgrading to Windows 8, im facing a very slow download speed. My router and the NIC is working fine because on the same PC I also have Linux. In Linux, everything works fine.
When checking through the task manager, it shows that the system use the full bandwidth 1Mbps even without a download. The process menu doesn't show whats taking much bandwidth. The bitdefender's firewall also shows network activity.
Is there any hidden apps downloading? How to fix this?

Answer:Windows 8 Hidden Downloading? Slow Internet?

Just take a look at the metro page and all those live tiles which are turned on by default.

If you want to decrease the network activity just turn all the live tiles off.

Hi,

I have down loaded some Free Photoshop PSD files from the Internet for my work in the past 7 days. Since November 4th, 5th, 2012 my laptop started to be very slow. I don't know if this is the issue with the downloaded files. I always do a virus check immediately after every download. I am using Microsoft security essentials for virus check.

After I reboot the laptop, it gets faster for some time. Again later it gets slow. It takes 5 minutes to delete a 400 kb file from recycle bin. It takes 3 minutes to open a windows folder and 5 -6 minutes to open IE. If I reboot again then things get faster again. This continues.

I have attached the logs to this message as requested in the First Steps.

I do not have a Windows 7 CD/DVD because I bought a laptop with pre installed version of Windows 7 home from Sony. (OEM).

I always keep my Windows Updated with Windows and Security updates from Microsoft website.

Please help.

Answer:Laptop running very slow after downloading some PSD files from Internet

Bump

Please check my logs and look if there is any Virus, Trojan, Spyware in it. Also instruct me what to do ?

I have full access to the internet and I can download anything from Microsoft website as I have a Original genuine full version of Windows 7 Home basic. But I do not have any CDs/DVDs as I bought a lap top with preinstalled software and Sony Corporation did not provide any CDs/DVDs in the box.

Oh f i downloaded something and i thought it was dodgy, i think main problem is that it had a compatibility issue. as soon as i run it it conflicted with another program and i uninstalled it straight away, but it said it didn't install correctly so i reinstalled it correctly and uninstalled it with windows recommendations. it was completely removed from my system but now internet explorer is downloading pages REALLY SLOWLY!!! My comp was so fast and downloaded internet pages in nano seconds, now its taking 20 seconds to fullly load my homepage. I now its something to do with downloading images etc. to web pages etc. because i opened about 20 homepages and they all loaded at about the same time so it's obviously not that my system is going slow or can't handle it. I hope the answer is not to revert to before i installed the program because if u will see my previous post my back ups have been failing so i don't have a back up, the only option is to roll back to about 1month ago and lose all my settings and i think that will mess with my comp and force me to doa full system restore so i hope y'all got a solution, thanks

Some kind of trojan invaded my computer I believe. I ran Symantec and it deleted a bunch of entries but the auto-protect kept popping up to block something labeled Downloader and file "kernel32.exe" I was eventually able to delete it in safe mode after turning off the system restore. But then the auto-protect kept blocking Adware.Webbuying with file name qmlqrib.dll (both of these were in system32 folder according to the log), but there was no file by that name anywhere. I ran Ad-Aware which removed two entries with a level 10 threat assessment named BookedSpace and Win32.TrojanClicker, however the Adware.Webbuying continued to be blocked by Symantec. I then ran Spybot which found and deleted numerous entries and I no longer get auto-protect for Adware.Webbuying. However, I continue to get pop-ups, internet is slower, computer is slower, and it seems to prevent downloads after a certain point in time (haven't made it past 20% of a file from various different sites ranging from 4-20 MB). Who knows what else it is doing; hopefully not downloading my personal data. Please lend me a hand if you can. Thanks. I have included my HijackThis log:

Hello, I am using a Thomson ST516 v6 DSL Modem, through which I have connected a Tenda W311R+ Wireless Router. There's two laptops, one running Windows 7 Sp1, the other running Windows Xp Sp3, and an Android based phone using this connection. I should mention that the problematic laptop had Windows 7 before switching to Xp and ran without any issues. This issue seems to have started for about a week or so.
My ISP is Romtelecom, I'm using the Eset Nod32 v3.0 Antivirus.

Windows 7 Home PremiumHP PavilionSo my tech vocab isn't all that great, but I'll try to be clear. I have had 2 desktops. I used the first just fine for quite a while, but switched to the second one because it had better specs. On that computer, it was also working fine for quite a while, but one day everything got slowed down drastically. Web pages would still load, but take a while. If I downloaded anything, it would always stop at a random percentage (13% done, or even say 0 out of 0 bytes forever) but never finish. If I tried to download any program, it just wouldn't download/install; the progress bar, like when downloading, goes to a certain percent and then stops forever. I gave up and tried the quickNuke option using Dan's Nuke and Boot. The new windows was the same as the old one, slow internet, incomplete downloads, uninstallable programs.Because of this problem I switched back to my first desktop, the HP Pavilion. It worked fine! But today the same problem has occurred, however now I can actually install stuff. I got Malwarebytes and HitmanPro to do a scan; my computer was heavily infected, even though I monitor and clean up constantly. I have installed all the safe-keeping programs, but again, the problem persists. The only reason I can think of this happening is maybe because I installed League of Legends the night before, because everything is mostly Adware or PUPs. After googling I assumed worse case scenario that I had a rootkit; I thought Da... Read more

For some odd reason, in the past 4 weeks, my streaming video has become VERY slow, and I do not know why. I have a high-speed cable connection, the same I have had for the past 6 months. It is slow, sound-with-stil-images and/or constantly rebuffering, and this is true with WIndows Media, Winamp, Realplayer and even Flash videos (on YouTube for example). I cannot take it anymore. I tried this Hijackthis thing, and this is my log:

I've been on a DSL connection for some time now (almost a year), but around a few days ago, my connection speed for browsing the internet became extremely slow, staying around 500 bytes - 2Kbps. It would also take web pages a few refreshes to load completely. I use Opera as my main browser, but IE and Firefox are just as slow. However, my online games and bittorrent client are as fast as before... (This is Winodws XP SP2)

When I download a file on any internet browser, the file would download @ around 1kbps for a few seconds before the transfer rate goes to 0kbps, but there arent any error messages.

The other computers connected to the router don't seem to have anything wrong and their speed is the same as before.

These are the programs I installed around the time my internet slowed down:

.net framework 1.1 -which is now uninstalled
Norton Internet Security 2005 (w/ antivirus) - also now uninstalled

I have not touched any of my internet settings before this started happening

I have scanned my computer w/ Norton antivirus, AVG and various spyware cleaners all with the latest definitions and found nothing...

WTF is wrong with my connection??? Its PPPoe (at least that's what it says when it connects to the internet)

I can still play online games and use my bittorrent client without a hitch (same ping & dl/ul rates as before).

Answer:My Internet browsing/downloading is extremely slow, yet online games are normal (DSL)

I have also tried disabling my firewalls nd have tried the Winsockxpfix and the TCP/IP reset thing

Running older PC Clone 2.0 Ghz Dual CPU Pentium, 1GB Ram Win XP Home Edition system.

While navigation on Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, system runs extrememly slow and/or crashes. When using applications such as Itunes, Email, or simply opening up Word and other applications, it runs very slow and almost seems to stop. The IE7 that was on the computer had changed to an operate with add-ons off as a result of the infection. I downloaded and reinstalled IE7 and this seems to have fixed that problem for the time being. MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpy icons dissappeared from my desktop. When trying to use them from the Start / Menu options the programs no longer worked. I reinstalled them and they appear to work fine now. However, the system still seems to run very slow over all and its performance is greatly hindered.

Next, I ran free version of SuperAntiSpyware and all it detected was a couple Adware cookies. Secondly, I ran free version of Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and it detected PUP.GamePlayLab infections located in the Registry Key: HKLM\SOFTGWARE\Microsoft\Windows.... These files were removed and quarantined by MWB. Thirdly, I ran Old Timer's TFC and then rebooted the computer and it appeared to run a little faster, but still sluggish while using IE7. So, finally, I ran ESET Free Online Scanner, and it detected "Win32/Toolbar.Babylon and Win32/TopMedia.a" virus infections. Scan took about 2 1/2 hours. I set it to search the drives/ar... Read more

I'm having problems regarding my wireless internet. First off, we've got two computers, one upstairs which uses a regular modem, and this one downstairs which gets its internet connection through a router upstairs.

Now, from my computer upstairs, the internet works flawlessly throughout of the day. This downstairs computer, its internet connection is...to put it mildly, crap, depending on the time of day. Speed always seems to go real slow at around the same time each day, around 2pm, around 4pm and again around 7pm. It seems to get back on track around 9-10pm, which is right now.

The funny thing is that it says connection is 'excellent' or 'very good'. Here's an example. It's the same scenario whether internet connection is actually very very slow or at normal speed.

I have no idea why, and I'd be really grateful if anyone can help me out. Tips or remedies on what I can do, because it's very frustrating!

Thank you.

I don't get what's wrong with this computer. Almost everyday it acts slow, it takes about 2 minutes to login to a page. Some days it will act fast and other days it won't and it's annoying, especially when I have to use the internet to research! It's even acting worse than a 56k modem. I've done a spyware check with spyweeper and it finds adware sometimes and I delete them, but it doesn't seem to have an affect on the speed. Does anyone have a clue what the problem might be and how to fix it. Also I have a very old cable modem, I've had it since 2002 I believe. It's a Surfboard SB4100 Cable Modem.

hey,

Today i have a new problem with my adsl. The wireless was working at full 'advertised' speed last night, then today i noticed the wireless connection symbol in the task bar had changed from 54mbs to only 2 mbs, and a speedtest showed that it was a tenth of the speed it used to be.

Because i just installed my modem yesterday, i thought maybe this was just the isp limiting my connection until i register the modem or something. However, when i connect an ethernet cable between the modem and my computer, the connection works at full advertised speed. Does this rule out the possibility that my isp is limiting my signal, and suggest that the problem is with my wireless settings? Thanks for any help. The modem is a speedtouch 780.

Answer:Help! Slow Computer, Slow Internet. Slow, Slow, Slow!

Hi MaryJane,Sorry for the delay, this forum is really swamped right now. I don't see any positive signs of malware in your log, although there is one thing that I am unsure about. I'll get to that in a minute. Before we do rootkit scans and use some other tools to confirm that malware is not the problem, let's do a quick check of resources.Press <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Del> to open Task Manager, then click on the Processes tab. Place a check next to Show processes from all users. Note the numbers at the bottom, CPU usage should be running at 0 to no more than five percent if your system is idle (no background tasks running). If that is not the case, scroll down and see if any of the processes is running at a high percentage of CPU usage. On a normal system at idle the System Idle Process should show about 98 percent, meaning nothing else is using the CPU. The next columns to the right, memory usage and peak memory usage, may also show something out of line if one process is using a large amount of memory. If you see anything showing high CPU usage or high Memory usage, make a note of it.Now, click the Performance tab. The key numbers here are in the Commit Charge box -- The Total and Peak figures; and in the Physical Memory box, the Total figure. Make a note of these three numbers. I would like to see them, but I can tell you what I'm looking for: basically, any time the Commit Charge exceeds the total physical memory, Windows will have to constantly swap d... Read more

A little background to help others help me I'm on a Windows Small Business Server 2003 environment with no other server connection but one machine, I have 3 shared drives created on the server and am running Shared Point Services 2.0 as well and all my computers on the network have a login script assigned to them when booting onto the network so their drives are automatically mapped. Oh and I have POS old Sony laptop running as a proxy using Winproxy 5.0, but it has about a gig of speed and 512 RAM and the connection goes: in from the outside, to the proxy, line directly to server, server assigns ISP's by DHCP internally.

Now in the future is is safer to burn MP3's on an external harddrive and listen that way or avoid Sony cd's?

Hello.

Win XP Pro SP3
Pentium D CPU @ 3.00 GHz
1G ram

This machine is on a server-based network in a nonprofit. I am the "IT person" but frankly, I am not an IT professional... I'm in charge of it simply because I have some basic "do it yourself" skills!

The machine was running very slowly for the past week, with hangs that lasted from 30 seconds to a few minutes, but always did come back. Shut down was taking over 2 minutes; restart was taking nearly 5 minutes. Programs such as MS Word 2003 opened very slowly. Our employee who uses this didn't mention all this to me until...

During an MS auto update this past Wednesday, when XP rebooted to add 11 updates, the machine hung entirely. It took 6 hours before the first update was installed, then sat another 2 hours showing "2 of 11" and "do not turn off or restart your machine."

I contacted MS and after heehawing around for a while, the person said to go ahead and do a hard shut down. It rebooted, slightly faster, and did not hang again, so last night, I was able run Ccleaner, then Spybot Search and Destroy and Malwarebytes. No malware. The machine normally runs Vipre Enterprise (which will show as SBEAgent in the log below); the Vipre log for the past three days for the machine is clean.

I also scanned the disk for errors (none found) last night. And, I changed the page file size so that its virtual memory is now 2500 to 3048.

I then manually updated the remaining 9 OS up... Read more

Hi Guys,

Been a while since I have posted, thanks for your help in the past.

I have 5 problems at the moment:

- Computer is slow to startup.

- Windows defender keeps finding the same 2 problems: Adware: Win32/Cpmsky & Browser Modifier: Win32/Fotomoto - says it removes them but they come straight back.

- CA Antivirus has been detecting and removing 44 threats for the last 6 weeks or so.

- When I shut down my computer it invariably downloads and installs updates - I have checked this out and it is always the same update (which is always installed properly).

- Spybot S&D also acting up a bit by not immunizing my computer properly - ie: after clicking on Immunize it tells you how many items that you are not protected from, ie: 198, after updating I am still only protected against 74670 whilst the total reads 74861. A discrepancy of 191?

Hello! I had 'caught' a virus a couple days ago, being lazy (downloading from a site I didn't trust). I usually know better, but was in a rush.

So, the whole PC was acting funny and would shut down after logging in.

I installed AVG Free and that helped the PC get back to normal....at least it hink it is.

BUT, anything dealing with the internet is extremely slow.

Weatherbug takes forever to displayits data, DAP takes a 3 times as long as it did before to get ready to download, and IE7 is taking much longer to load any website.

I followed the 5 step process outlined on this site and the internet is still running slow. OH, the other 2 PCs on the network have no troubles with their internet connections, so i know its not the cable.

Attached, and lsted, are the logs from HijackThis and DSS.

I really appreciate any help anyone can give me. I really don't want to have to reinstall windows, but will if no other choice. Thanks!

Answer:Slow Internet Connection

Reboot your router.

Are they multiple devices connected to your network, using bandwidth?

I still remember the dial-up days (~56kbps), no complaints because it was better than nothing.

Hello.

I have setup a local area network.

I have a web server that can also be accessed from outside.

I have a PC with Microsoft Proxy Server 1.0 loaded. My inside users can connect to the local intranet web site (using Microsoft Proxy 1.) and they can download powerpoint files at LAN speed.

Now, I installed another proxy server (non microsoft) and I configured internet explorer to use it. I notice that my internal intranet users are downloading their presentation very slow (10K /sec). Actually, it seems that the system delivers the bandwidth that is for serving our Outside users.

Could you explain what is the cause of this strange effect?

Also, when it try to access internal my web server using its internal IP address (192.168.x.x) the system does not load the web page. I can only access it using www.etc...
Any ideas?

Thank you in advance.

hi, i got a SONY VAIO SVS15118FXB runing win7 64bit. for a very long time the computar has been accessing internet intermittently. sometimes it will sometimes it wont. it started in my house my brothers and sisters would connect to our wifi perfectly without problems and have regular speeds, but my computer would say it is connected but get really slow speeds or sometimes it would even say its not connected while you can see a full sugnal and my brothers using it just fine. now i moved to FL on my own and im having the same issue. i have ran the same test over and over with 2 different phones, 2 different tablets and another laptop and they all run 20-25 mbps speeds but my laptop wont go over 2mbps.i have updated windows defender and scanned it with that. scanned it with MBAM, ADWcleaner, Ad Aware and comodo cleaning essentials. nothing seems to get to what the problem is. right now im very desperate and i am willing to reset my laptop back to a new laptop. i already backed everything important and i really would like to have it back as brand new and get a fresh start with it. soo if you guys think that is a good option too im all for it. attached is the results of an "ipconfig -all" command:

Hi,

I have a wireless setup at home (Belkin) which shows signal strength as (36Mps - Low)
It stays at this pretty much all the time but if anything improves not decreases.
However, when surfing the internet the downloads seem to slow down or freeze then suddenly it will seem really fast. It has been erratic like this for a few months really and is intermittant but i am not sure whether its the phoneline outside the house or the wireless signal or the router?

Any idea's?

Answer:Slow internet connection on 2Mb????

Can you not connect direct to the router to see the difference, to confirm or eliminate?

But 36 Mb/s is plenty to accommodate a 2 Mbps connection.

I have a Compaq armada, op is windows xp. My earthnet connetion is at 100mbps. When i surf the web my web page takes about 5 minutes to daownload. I have Ran Spybot s & d, and antivir guard, for viruses and spyware. What can i do to fix the peoblem.

Answer:slow internet connection

Your ethernet connection speed is not your Internet connection speed. What type of ISP service do you have? DSL? Cable? What are the upload/download speeds promised by your ISP?

If it is literally taking 5 minutes for each page to load, you have a serious problem, and you need to contact your ISP. 56k dial-up isn't that slow.

To accurately determine the speed of your Internet connection, go to a speed test web site.
http://www.dslreports.com

Or get a stopwatch. I have serious doubts about every web page taking 5 full minutes to download.

When I first turn on my computer, it does not connect to the internet. In the bottom right I watch the timer go round and round on the internet access symbol, then it shows a yellow triangle with exclamation mark. If I mouse over that, it says no internet access. If I then go back and hit restart, it goes through the re-boot process and does connect OK. It has done this since it was new. I also got a new modem with same results. I have a Dell backup system with Windows 10 plugged into the same modem and it always starts the first time.
Using Windows 7 Home Premium with Service Pack 1
Processor is Intel i3-6100, 3.70 GHz
8 GB RAM
Using a 512 SSD for C-Drive

Is there a setting somewhere that is wrong, or any ideas?

Hey there! I've created this thread to find out why my internet is agonizingly slow. I was playing LoL when my ping jumped from 70 to a whopping 1k, and continued to go up and up until it reached 4k. This was a few hours ago and I am still very laggy. There's about a 6 to 8 second delay in my skype calls and it takes a while for any webpages to load. I've tried skyping on my phone and I still have that same horrifying lag. I haven't had such slow internet for years so I was wondering if there is a way to tell what is causing this? I hope I am not being DDOSed and I doubt that I am but would someone please be able to help me?

I'm using windows 7 and my wifi is wireless but it's only a few metres from my computer so I have no idea what's going on. I've talked to a few of my friends who use the same internet company as myself and they said that their internet is fine so is it my router? Also recently my internet has been cutting out every 40 minutes or so and it gets quite annoying (it'll come up with that red cross thing or the yellow star and after a few minutes it will eventually reconnect). I'm absolutely terrible when it comes to anything about computers or technology in general so any help would be wonderful! Please tell me if I am not being specific enough and I will try my best to explain in a way that you can understand, hopefully without sounding like an idiot. Aside from when my internet cuts out, it's saying I h... Read more

Answer:Slow internet connection

try doing a power cycle - see below
As its the same on another device connected to the router - its likely to be the router/modem or line
Ask the ISP to do a line test

------------------------------------------------------------------------

How to power cycle

?power cycle? process to reboot or reset the modem/router

Switch off all the devices modem, router and computers also unplug their power cables.
Wait at least 1 to 5 minutes. We have found in some instances you need to wait at least 15 minutes
Plug the power cords back in, but don?t switch them on.
First turn on the modem and then wait for a few minutes for it to settle and all the lights to become stable.
Next switch on the router (if a separate device) and then wait for a few minutes for it to settle and all the lights to become stable.
Now turn on your computer, You should now be able to access the Internet.

just like the title says im getting really slow internet on wired connection, so I reinstalled xp sp3 on my almost 5 year old computer, but oddly after the reinstallation the situation remains, for example it takes FOREVER to get to facebook, most of the time it would just say "network timeout" and that is not just limited to facebook but every site including google, also my steam icons in my friends list wont even show up. this is really strange. I also tried of course uninstalling/reinstalling the network driver, repairing the connection in xp, reset my router and modem and switching around with multiple Ethernet cables but nothing seems to be working for me...
I am sure that it is not my router's fault because i have 3 other computers(wired&wireless) attached to my router and they all work just fine.
please help me out here guys i ran out of ideas. thanks in advance.

I had the same problem once, I found out that it was some kind of worm who was messing with my network connection. Run a virus scan and if that won't help then I don't know what else you should do, it could be something with the motherboard, some glitch maybe, or it's just getting too old.

I'm a computer novice, so please forgive me in advanced.
My problem is that when I open up internet explorer it takes a very long time for the home page to show up.
I haven't tried any troubleshooting because I don't know where to start.
Not sure what I need to do to find out if my computer has a virus.

TCP YOUR-47375C5FC1:1026 YOUR-47375C5FC1:0

I called my Internet provider because my connection is way too slow. They ran a netstat application in my command prompt. It reflected that this code TCP YOUR-47375C5FC1:1026 YOUR-47375C5FC1:0 was "listening" to my computer and causing my connection to be slowed down. I tried a registry cleaner, and that didn't work. The tech from the Internet provider mentioned that something, maybe in my start-up program, is running in the background and not shutting off.
Does anyone know how to fix this? If so, can you give me an idiot's guide? I'm clearly not as savvy as you folks are. I need to be walked through.
Thanks a million.
