Question: Outlook Express "Send" error

I get this message while out of town on my laptop:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'pop.west.cox.net', Server: 'smtp.west.cox.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I am able to receive, just not send. Any suggestions?

My friend is having a strange problem with their computer. They are using Windows XP Home Edition. After composing a new email in Outlook Express, and hitting the send button. The Install wizard pops up as if something is being installed on the computer, and then a second window pops up with a message (sorry I don't have the exact wording) relating to Microsoft Picture It! Stating that the file is located on a disc or other removable media. It's as if Microsoft Picture It! is attempting to install. All of these windows can be canceled and closed. The email will be sent as usual.

They are using Norton anti-virus software, which is up do date. We also ran Avast virus cleaner. The computer appears to be free of viruses. We tried reinstalling IE and OE, but it didn't help. I was thinking about unistalling both IE and OE, and then reinstalling to see if that would correct the problem.

What would cause something this weird? I have never run across anything like this before.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I use OE and Gmail, which is configured to display through my Outlook Express details page. Everything's always worked smoothly until a couple of weeks ago. Now, perhaps one in about every half dozen attempts, when I click "Send Receive", it freezes/hangs on the "Securing" part of the set up before it displays any messages. It remains frozen for about 15-20 seconds then I get an error message. If I try again it usually works?? Can anyone help please?

I have a W7 32bit laptop and I do not have MS Office installed. I have been using Hotmail until a couple weeks ago when I was "converted" to outlook.com email - which I like OK. When I'm using a browser - IE9 in this case - and when I click on "send link as" or "send page as", it launches Windows Live Mail and puts me in a WLM output email. I would instead like it to launch me into outlook.com and an outlook.com output email. How can I do this - or can't it be done at all?

I installed a MSI MS-3871 WLAN 802.11b/g/n 1T1R+BT2.1 EDR Combo Slim Module on my Intel DX58SO running Win 7 Pro x64 and MS Office Pro 2007.

Desktop Boards — Wireless LAN (WiFi) and Bluetooth* module

The software/drivers for the module added Bluetooth features to the Office 2007 applications.

Every time I reply to an email for the first time, I get the following pop-up error box:

I can disable the pop-up error box by unchecking "Show add-in user interface errors" under "In all Microsoft Office Programs:" in Tools/Options/"Other" Tab/"Advanced Options..." button.

I'd like to know if there is a solution for this issue other than turning off the notification of the add-in user interface error?

How do I troubleshoot this issue?

I have the latest drivers installed. The drivers for the Bluetooth side of the module are from Motorola and the drivers for the WLAN 802.11bgn side of the module are from Ralink.

This issue is resolve for now. The problem is a Bluetooth driver that causes issues with MS Office as well. See the link below for more details:

In addition to disabling the "Show Add-In user interface errors" option as described in post 1, you can disable the "Send to Bluetooth" feature under Tools/Trust Center/Add-Ins/Manage: COM Add-ins (drop down menu and click "Go")/uncheck "Send to Bluetooth."

With Win 7, you need to right click the application exe file, select "Properties"/Compatibility and check the box to run the program as an administrator to be able to uncheck the "Send to Bluetooth" options in all the Office applications.

Hi I run Windows Vista Home Premium and Outlook 2007. I've set up POP3 access for Gmail and to download mail from mail.bigpond.com (an Australian ISP). Initial setup was fine and I can send test messages to myself.

Recently I've had trouble sending (but not receiving) email via Outlook. The following error message is shown:

Sending' reported error (0x80042109) : 'Outlook cannot connect to your outgoing (SMTP) email server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet Service Provider (ISP).

This message occurs for both my email accounts.

If I reboot the computer, then sometimes the mail will be sent successfully. I've checked the "account settings" on Outlook- and they are exactly as those given by my ISP/Gmail. But when I click on "test account settings", the test message can't be sent.

What's going on?!

Refer to the earlier query in this section dated 10th April under heading " OE suddenly asking for Logon Password" which shows possible ways of overcoming this . I reckon it's server problem as I had it re-occur a couple of days ago . My Mail is Btinternet which started rejecting my outward messages. I know that BT uses Yahoo so Isubstituted "mail.yahoo.com" for "mail.btinternet.com" ( OE/Tools/Accounts/Properties/Servers) and it immediately started working . So whatever the ISP says it IS their fault and somehow their systems start rejecting things for no valid reason .

My system crashed recently and I have had to restore everything. I reinstalled Outlook 2007 and was able to restore my PST file from a backup I had using the genie backup product. All my files and folders are now restored.

When I click on the send/receive button, I get this message "The operation failed. An object could not be found"

I deleted my email setup account (I'm downloading from my att account) and re set it up using the instructions on the att site. I also ran the 'repair' function off the Office CD and did the Office diagnostics.

Any suggestions?

Another likely cause is that there is a message that is either too large or corrupt in some manner. Logon to your servers Webmail site and delete the offending message there.

.... dialup.... you have my sympathy.  Do you have SP2 (Service Pack 2) for Windows XP installed?  What protections are you using against viruses and spyware?Have you been able insert pictures in the past?  I gather you're getting a glimpse of this panel for inserting a picture but it's faulty:Is that the panel you're referring to?

Hi guys I work for an ISP and embarrassingly I am really stumped with this one. I have a customer using Outlook Express every he try's to compose an email OE try's to force him to create a contact and its annoying him. Every time he clicks send it comes up "no matches found" he is using XP I did a google search but only found information regarding this issue related to 98 and 95 none of the resolutions applied to XP.

Sadly my XP machine is out of action at the moment and I cant tinker with it, your help is much appreciated.

After 4 years with no answer, I hope this helps someone else and saves the obligatory 1/2 hour searching dead posts with no helpful solution (in 2 minutes flat).

HERE'S HOW TO 'FIX' THE 'NO ADDRESS FOUND' ERROR: (1.) Open Address book and simply double click on the faulty contact entry. (2.) The 'Properties' window should pop up, now click on 'name' tab and add a dash after the 'last' name field entry. The 'display' field should reflect the additional dash after the name. (3.) Now click 'OK' to save changes then close the address book. (4.) Now create a new message and begin typing the contact name which should auto-fill the name showing a dash after name. Now it should work, BUT the extra dash may be seen by the recipient. TRY ADDING A DIFFERENT CHARACTER AFTER THE NAME IF DASH LOOKS FUNNY. GOOD LUCK ----dUCKBILL

I'm get this error ("msoe.dll could not be loaded") when I try to start it. Does anyone have an idea about why this would happen? The dll does exist in the dir.

Have you recently made any changes to your software? This behavior generally manifests itself after upgrading/downgrading/changing IE, OE, or installing certain service packs. It can also occur if you remove the Windows Address Boox (which OE requires).

Provide some additional details and I can point you to the appropriate solution for your situation.

I don't use Outlook so I am unable to figure this one out.

My son uses Outlook 2010 and is having to go to some extra steps every time he wants to send a mail. Here's what is happening:
He composes or replies to a mail and clicks "Send".
It goes to Out Box and is not sent.
It sits in the outbox indefinitely, even for days as other mail is collected automatically every two minutes. He says he has Outlook 2010 configured to send on receive/check; but, it does not send.
In order to send that mail, he must open the Out Box and then open that mail (that is just sitting there unsent) and click "Send" again and then and only then does it get sent -- from Out Box.
This happens with all mail he sends.

Suggestions?

Every time I exit Overlord I get Send/Don't Send error with modname "ntdll.dll". A mate of mine has the same error.

Guys,

I am a little confused with regard to some of the mail options in Outlook Express. (I have version 6) What is the difference between the "Drafts" and "Outbox" folders?

Further how does the "Send Later" option work from the file menu? I always thought that "Send Later" was the same as using "Drafts" but what happend was that I was doing an e-mail, went to Drafts, or clicked on "Send Later" or Outbox and then after I clicked on "Send" doing a regular send, I checked my Sent folder and about 3 copies of the same message were delivered to the same person! (I only sent one message-not 3!)

What is the deal with the "Outbox" folder? Apparently that is not like the Drafts folder....correct?

What's the difference between doing a Save, Save As, and Send Later with regard to OE functions? If I want to save a message that isn't done yet, which of these 3 options should I use? (I.e, I want the message to go to the Drafts folder for example and stay there until I TELL OE to send it.) I think whatever I did above was that I modified my message and then click on where it just automatically sent next time I opened the message. A review of these features would be helpful!

Just for the record, I also use Yahoo Mail and find that so much easier!

To save an E-Mail to your Drafts folder for work on later then you use the File\Save option.
If you wish to save the E-Mail in another format such as .EML or .TXT or .HTM then you use the Save as function. You will also be required to specify a folder to save in or use its "My Documents" default.
Send later function if only one e-mail account exists will place the e-mail in the outbox and send it the next time you click on the send receive button. If you have multiple accounts then you can specify which account to send it from.

Normally when you try to send an email from a link from firefox via "file->send link", your default email program automatically opens assuming it's not already open. If Outlook 2010 is already open, no problem; it works fine. If it's closed, I get the error below about a dll error telling me to reinstall outlook 2010. if I manually open Outlook, I can then email the link.

If I insert the Office 2010 disc to try a repair, I get an other error (below) saying 2003 was not uninstalled properly and to uninstall it before I can do the repair (gotcha-catch22-can't get there from here, etc....). I see nothing in add/remove to indicate there is a trace of Office 2003 remaining. I can send screen shots of the registry if desired, but see nothing there indicating 2003 was not removed fully, but could be wrong. I'm fine with surgical edits if necessary.

I've been running Office 2010 for a year with no other problems beyond this and it's possible this existed from day 1 and it just took me a while to notice it..

Any suggestion on how to either fix the dll issue directly, or deal with the 2003 uninstall hopefully without uninstalling 2010 and starting over?

When I send an internet page by email (Outlook 2003), it comes through on the other's computer as a long list of "JPG's" and links to items in the article.

I do not understand why, as when I send it, it shows up in my email that I am sending as a whole page. I sent it to me and it showed up as a whole page. Yet, when I send it to someone else, the pictures do not show up, and it is all html code and lines and jpg's.

Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Using Outlook 2000 with multiple POP mail accounts, on one machine when I did this I had a little drop down next to the send button that allowed me to choose which account to send a new email message from.

On a different machine (still Outlook 2000) the second account was set up but there is no choice and it sends through the default account only, does anyone know how to fix this !

I have tried looking in the file menu but it only has "send" but it should have "send using" as well.

driving me crazy !

Hmmm, if you have the multiple accounts set up properly, then you should be able to have the little drop down arrow on the send button to select which account to send from, but . . . .
right-click the toolbar int he opened mail and select Customize. In the Customize window, click on Commands tab, File in the left pane and scroll down in the right pane tioll you see Send Using. Click and drag that to where you want the button to appear on the toolbar and let go of the mouse button.

Click Close.

Now you can click that button to select which account to send with.

If the 2 accounts do not appear, then you do not have them both setup correctly.

I upgraded to Windows 10 Mobile on my Lumua 640 XL device. Till one month, all was fine
Now all of a sudden, since last 5 days, I notice that if I reply to a mail (GMAIL), the SEND button is disabled. If I write a Fresh mail, I am able to see the SEND button enabled.
But I cant reply to a mail that I have received. The SEND (>) button remains disabled. I dont know why

All of a sudden, an address that I email to often won't go through. I get the message "DELIVERY FAILURE: User [email protected] not listed in public Name & Address Book"

I tried to access help but I can't understand what they're talking about. The address book, or whatever it is, is a mystery to me. It's not related to the "contacts", is it? Because I have all my email addresses in the contacts area. The address book, I don't know.

How do I resolve this?

For some strange reason (aren't all of these computer problems strange?), every time I click on the "Send/Receive" button in Outlook 2002 I get a pop-up box that says "Operation failed". My email will send and receive on it's programmed time schedule, but not if I click on the button manually.

This just started yesterday as far as I know.

I've rebooted, run Spybot, Ad-Aware SE, AVG, and no problems show up.

Any ideas?

When I try to "Send on Behalf" an email in mailbox that I have the appropriate delegated permissions where the email was saved in the Drafts folder my credentials are in the "From" field once the recipient receives the message. Even though I add the mailbox owner's name in the "From" field before sending.

Any ideas? This only happens when a message is stored in the Drafts folder. And to the best of my knowledge I used to be able to send from Drafts without issue.

Did you try changing the from field to represent the mailbox you are trying to send on behalf of. Also on the Exchange server they can give you implicit rights which will make it not say sent on behalf of.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for taking time to read my post. This started this morning; when i hit "send/receive" button, Outlook does its usual process and at the bottom right corner it shows the progress and it shows I recieve w/o any loss, but I don't see it in my reading pane. Plus after Outlook finishes "send/receive", it'll sometimes shut down. running Win xp srvc pk 2. Also when i restart i get a light blue screen and its performing a "Checking File System C:", and when it's done then it'll go to the login screen; any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hi everybody,

I have a problem and was wondering if any of you experts would be able to help me please?

I'm using Outlook 2007 at work and each day when I log in I have two problems:

1. "Press CTRL+ENTER to send messages" under tools\options\email options\advanced email options is unchecked (even though I've checked it myself the day before)

and

2. When I click on calendar, somebody elses calendar opens and the check to show 'My Calendar' has been removed.

These aren't deal breakers but they annoy me every day!!

In any windows app (or at least all the ones I've tried), if I choose Send - As Attachment, outlook will open a new message, but the "Send" button seems to be disabled. It's not grayed out and it looks like I've successfully clicked on it, but it doesn't send or close the message. There's no error message - nothing. It's as if the button itself is fine but there's no action specified for the click. All the other toolbar buttons seem normal.

However, if I create a new message in outlook, and add the same file as an attachment, it sends the message with no problem.

I'm running Office 2002 SP3 on Win XP Pro Version 5.1.

Obviously since it doesn't completely prevent me from sending attachments, this isn't a huge problem, just an irritation, but I'd be interested if anyone knows anything about it.

I have MS Outlook 2002 SP-2, which I'm starting to use over Eudora 6 for a variety of reasons (mostly because Eudora seems to jumble up my older emails). However, it seems that Outlook doesn't have a function that I use very often, the "Send Again" where you basically re-edit a message you sent out previously to be sent again to the same recipient or others. It seems that this function would be very simple, but I haven't figured it out in Outlook. Any help would be appreciated.

Howdy folks,

After an uninvited guest visited my computer , and after we cleaned up his/her mess, a problem persists and I wonder if it indicates a larger problem.

When Outlook is not running, it checks for mail at regular intervals. When program is running, and I click "send/receive" the error "The operation failed" appears. When the program is running, it still checks at regular intervals.

It is possible that we screwed something up during twelve hours of cleanup, or it may be something malicious from the visitor.

It is weird. Any suggestions.

OUTLOOK 20013 does not display rt clk "SEND TO" command

I have Outlook 2003 on all my pcs and it worksfine. All of a sudden, my W7 Pro dsktp does not display the SEND TO option when I rt clk on a file on my HD.

Surely it's something I did?? and didn't know the all the effects.

Hi there ... (hope my english is not to bad) ...

I have a Team of 5 people. Each team meber has its own email-adress / email account. Customers can reach individuall members by the individuall email- or the whole team by the email-list "CM-Mngt". So far so good.

Problem:If anyone replys to a customer (via his individuall email account), he puts the whole team in "cc", so that they are infomend.
But if the customer replies, most of the time they only reply to the one teammember. If this teammeber is of sick / vaction, the rest of the team stay?s in the "dark".

Looking fo a solution:Is it possible to configure the Outlook-Server / Account that way that:
Each teammeber is able to send either as him self, or to send an email with "Send-As", using n special/extra Email account called i.e. "CM-Mngt".
This CM-Mngt" account should only be able to SEND emails and does (should) not have an IN-Box.
If someone replies to on of the "CM-Mngt" Emails, Outlook should than use the Email-Mailinglist "CM-Mngt" to distribute the email to all teammeber individually (therefore the "CM-Mngt" account does not have an In-Box).

This problem started out on one of the machines in my office, now it's happening on several of them.

Machine config:
- Outlook 2007
- POP account
- antivirus regularly running/updating/scanning

Symptoms:
- User is running outlook like normal, then all the sudden Outlook gets stuck "Preparing to send / receive". Clicking the Send/Receive button does nothing, and it just sits there forever, apparently never actually making contact with the servers or doing anything at all.

My fix:
- I have to close down Outlook, but that's not enough.
- Open task manager, even though Outlook is closed, there is still an instance of it running on the machine.
- Manually close that extra instance, restart Outlook.

Then all the sudden it works, it sends and receives just fine. I thought the first user may have had a virus, but I've scanned ALL the machines in our office with Symantec Antivirus and nothing came up.

Also, this doesn't appear to ever happen on the two machines in the office who are running IMAP accounts.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Problem: When in “My Pictures” folder, highlighting any image file (such as a .jpg file) and then clicking “E-Mail This File” in the “File and Folder Tasks” pane always pulls up Outlook Express even though Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 is set as the default email client.

From what I gather, this seems to be a fault with Sendmail.dll program or it’s settings in Windows. This is registered to open Outlook Express only and not Microsoft Office Outlook 2007. I believe it is possible to repair this, but such resolution evades me.

The work-around is to right-click the file and click on “Send To” Microsoft Outlook. This way we cancontinue to email images and documents with little or no inconvenience. In the meantime, I will post this on a few forums for a possible resolution. This is the case for several of our computers. I've looked for about four hours on how to repair this, and haven't found an aswer that works.

Thus far, we have made the three major settings that also affect the way Windows XP is set to handle Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 as the default client and these are set correctly on Judy’s Computer:

I know how to do this in Outlook 2003. It might translate loosely to 2010. You have to edit the Send/Receive Settings and define the Send/Receive groups. The keyboard shortcut for this in Outlook 2003 is Ctrl+Alt+S.

so i noticed a weird problem on a clean vista 64 sp1 install. I was in picasa, selected some photos and then hit "email" but outlook 2007 never popped up. i thought it was just a weird picasa problem so i kinda ignored it.

then i just tried right clicking on a small file, choosing send to, mail recipient and the same thing happened with outlook 2007 not opening. it should have opened a new message with the attachment.

I used vlite to tweak and edit down some services and now i think i inadvertently got rid of a service that is required by the send to or something. I really was very conservative with what i tweaked out so i have no idea what it could be.

anybody have any ideas??

REALLY DO NOT WANT TO REINSTALL VISTA.......

Re-enable any/all services you might have disabled.

Really best practice with Vista is to leave her alone and let her do her thing. Especially with a system of your specs, the upside of "tweaking" is very minimal...

Maybe try re-installing office?

I am infected with this crap and have used the following tools to try to get rid of it:
Windows Defender, Unible PowerSuite (SpeedUpMyPC, Registry Booster & Spyware Protector) and Norton's One Button Checkup and WinDoctor.

Not sure if it's related, but my DISPLAY is locked at 640 X 480.

Atempted the 5 Step Process before posting and Panda ActiveScan froze and crashed after scanning 59253 files, but not before identifying 28 spyware files.

My computer either freezes or slows to a crawl when I hit the "my computer" icon, or try to use the "send to:" option under files or when I try to save a file in a different folder other than the one currently displayed in the "save in" feature. Major geeks cured this problem for me in 2004, but I did not save the solution and cannot remember it now. Please help...again!

I seem to have a problem sending attachments through Microsoft Excel 97 or Word 97. I can send the file fine if I go through Outlook 97 and select it as an attachment, but when I try to send the files directly from the Word or Excel program, they come through as a huge jumbled mess.

It seems like there was an option that went something like "break apart messages..." Man, I can't find it anywhere. Am I crazy? I thought that may be the problem, but if I can't find it, I can't check it.

Anybody have any ideas?

User needs to be able to send from anothers mail box. Through Exchange we give user "Send As" role in on the Permissions tab. To set up on the user (XP) do we just do Tools>Options>Mail Setup>Email Accounts>View or Change>Change>More Settings>Advanced>Open These Additional Mailboxes>Add ?
Then habe the user open that mailbox via Outlook and send ? What is the difference between The user role and the send as role ? Thanks

By default, WindowsXP will request to report application errors to Microsoft.
To turn this off:

Right click on the My Computer icon on the desktop
Select Properties / Advanced

I have a work issued laptop, with my work email set up through Windows Live Mail 2011. It works fine in the office, but for some reason, when I work from home, messages won't send over my wireless connection.

The "errors" I get are "Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0E" and "Socket Error: 10060".

It's a standard Toshiba black laptop. The email is a Squirrel Mail account. And in properties, I have the "My server requires authentication" option checked.

Forgive me, but I'm not well-versed with the lingo. I do more with design and editing software. Again, it works fine with my internet connection at work, but not at home. So I wonder if it maybe has something to do with my home internet. Both are wireless. Home is DSL through AT&T.

Hopefully, I can get this fixed today, or I'll be forwarding emails through my personal account. Fun stuff.

Im not sure if this will completely take care of the problem listed by the OP, bu when i searched Google for "disable outlook in firefox" that thread was the first thing that popped up. I have found out how to change the mailto: action in firefox (3.5.7) to stop outlook from opening.

Tools>options>applications
find "mailto" in content type column, and click the drop down box in the action column. There you can select from several mail clients including gmail.

This same procedure can be used to select which application opens most relivent file types.

Somehow I've lost the file association between .htm/.html and IE/Firefox. Firefox is my default browser, but when I click on an html link in an email (Outlook Express) the window that opens is "Compaq Owners Documents," rather than a Firefox window. I've tried re-installing Firefox with no improvement. This APPEARS to have begun right after I installed IE7 Beta (although I seldom use the program). Firefox operation seems to be normal otherwise. Any ideas how I should track this down? Thanks --

Answer:Clicking on a link in Outlook Express brings up "Owners Documents"

Don't know if this will help or not.

Open your Control Panel, double click on Folder Options, review all your settings. Pay attention to the tab File Types. Review all of the File Extension Types. Look for the file extension that you are having problems with. Click on the Advanced button to review the settings. You may find your problem by accident like I did once. If not, I'm sure some of the experienced members will be able to help.

ok, so I cleaned up all the old programs that I do not use any longer and deleted them from the control panel, add/remove programs, rebooted and about a day or so tried to open up outlook express. the program opened up but I can not "Expand" an email by double cliking it OR I can not even reply to an email as I get the attached screen shots of the error messages I recieve.

I did have this problem a while back but for the life of me I can not remember how it was corrected.

When Outlook Express is opened, every e-mail that was sent "return reciept requested" causes Outlook Express to try to send a return receipt, which then fails resulting in an error message.

OE ignores all changes to the "return receipt" functions and continues to try to send them even before they are opened; when the mouse hovers over the particular e-mail.

A recent malware infection (which has been removed) caused a change in the registry and turned off Task Manager (which has been corrected). I suspect the problem with OE is also a registry issue, but cannot Google any information on this specific function or issue.

Two questions:

1. Is there a registry entry that controls the fuction of OE's "return receipt" function ?

2. If OE is uninstalled & reinstalled, will the stored e-mails be lost ?

An aggravating factor is that sbcglobal does not have a configuration setting to prevent duplicate e-mails from being downloaded and a recent change to the e-mail account by sbcglobal has resulted in the messages being duplicated 2 and 3 times in OE, and it is attempting to download another 4000 ( ! ) more, which will also all be duplicates.

This "return receipt" problem is preventing the ability to delete the duplicate & unwanted e-mails, so OE's functionality is reduced to nil.

Also, is there a static limit to the number of messages that OE can store & manage ?

Can someone reccomend a "Web-Based" Email site .... (ie Yahoo, Excite etc.) that can accept and display all of the attachment and goodies that OUTLOOK EXPRESS can generate?

For instance... if I send Email to my friend at Yahoo and I use a really cool stationary background she can only view the background as a seperate attachment.

Are there any web-based Email accounts that will view these backgrounds as part of the email without extra downloading? Even Actually... even WEB-TV can handle most of OUTLOOKS goodies, yet I have yet to find a web-based Email client that can.

I have thousands of emails in my Outlook Express. (I need to archive all my email.) I did clean up alot of it, but still thousands in there. OE periodically asks me to "compact folders to free up space". When I do so, it dumps all the .bak files into the recycle bin. (OE back up files). One day, in Sept 2010, after it compacted the folders, I found that I was missing hundreds of emails in my "sent" folder, (only the sent folder, all others were intact),  but only from May to Sept 2010. The "sent items.bak" file was in the recycle bin along with all other .bak files. I saved that file in a folder. Someone told me to rename it ".dbx" and restore it. I have not yet done so as I am wondering if it would duplicate ALL THE SENT MAIL, not just from May to Sept 2010. In any event, why is it doing this every time it compacts folders? Is that because I have too much email archived in OE folders? (If I follow the path to the store folder it shows only the dbx files, not any bak files. I have not emptied the recycle bin of these files as I don't know if I need to restore them.

The other day I realised I hadn't seen the Outlook Express 'compact messages' pop-up for some time. Sure enough, when I checked my recycle bin, the most recent bak files were at least 3 weeks old when I usually have to compact once a weekish. I did a manual compact and this worked ok. But, curious, I've been keeping an eye on the compact count check in the registry to see what happens when it reached the 100 mark. And it never reaches the 100 mark. The highest I've seen it is at 19, when suddenly it reverts to zero, seemingly of its own free will. Yesterday it was reading 5 and then when I checked an hour later expecting to see 7 or 8, it was reading 2! Needless to say, I don't touch anything in the registry, - just look.
I've been Googling this but I can't see any references to this particular behaviour anywhere. As I said, I can compact manually but I'd prefer not to have to. I am a bit worried that my OE might be corrupted. Any ideas anyone?

Just when you think you've heard everything, I must say that's a new one on me.

Compacting is Identity specific, so I would think the problem would be in your current Identity (of course a lot of people would look at your problem as a solution to out of control compacting ).
You could try creating a new Identity and see if it does the same thing.
If the compacting works properly in the new one, Import your mail from the old Identity.

Man it's so annoying ! After about 2 minutes on internet explore a message comes up and it says somethin about sending and error report and i can click "Send error report" or "Don't Send". At first I just kept hitting don't send, but it kept coming back. I also tried sending the error report but it doesn't help! It's been hapening for about a month now. Please if anyone knows how to fix this it would help me a lot! Thanks!

Hi, I just got a new laptop and I'm trying to export/import my address book from Outlook Express. When I import the addresses it only imports individual names and not "groups." It there a way to import groups as well? When I exported the address book from the old laptop I used the "text file (comma separated values)" option. Is this the right one to use?

No, it will not Export the Groups, you will need to recreate them.
The .csv file is the best backup, this format makes it available to Import to other programs.

As an alternative, you can make a copy of the .wab file and copy it over to the new computer.
To find the location of the original Address Book,
Open the Address Book in Outlook Express:
Tools > About Address Book
The directory will appear along with the name of the .wab file, which usually is the User Account name.wab

Navigate to that directory and copy the .wab file.
Copy the .wab file to the Desktop on the laptop,
find the location of the Address Book for Outlook Express,
Check this directory on the Laptop,
C:\Documents and Settings\User Account\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\User Account.wab
rename the .wab file to User Account.wab.old
Copy the backup .wab file to that directory and rename it to the same name as the current .wab file: User Account.wab

In Outlook Express, click the Address Book icon to open, the replaced Address Book should appear.

Let us know if that works for you or not.

Last night a popup message from McAfee told me that Dell Security center was trying to access the internet. I was in the midst of downloading and reading email, and being a dummy, I gave one-time permission.

Soon afterward, I began to suspect a virus, as I received a virus notification popup and an email from my ISP re: a deleted virus. As I was deleting items from my inbox, Outlook Express froze. I tried restarting, and OE hangs on the inbox and hogs 96%+ system resources.

This morning, my ISP program showed an error and my Antivirus was corrupted. I did a system restore and redownloaded the antivirus, which solved my problem with getting on the 'net. I've scanned and come up with nothing and downloaded a special scan and remove tool (Stinger) from McAfee for the virus it warned me about yesterday....Sober, I think. But still, OE hangs up on the Inbox and I can't read or remove or access the toolbar. It says "no email selected."

Any ideas?

I have started facing a strange problem recently. I re-installed windows 2000 and tried SP2 and ie6 updates but problem still persists.

On pressing key "L" anywhere, it launches outlook express as a side-effect. This is true even when some other application is open and in focus. The opened window shows inbox folder in place of default home screen of outlook express. I have noticed that in folders pane in outlook express, pressing L selects Local Folder and pressing it again selects Inbox. However, in this case the window with inbox is opened out of nowhere. I tried by deleting files from profile that may cause this (Like shortcuts) and also checked with a new user but in vain. One thing I have observed is that when I use on-screen keyboard, L key is working fine. This makes me think that it is not a shortcut recognized by explorer. I checked keyboard with other operating system in my dual-boot configuration and it is working fine there.

I am not able to work in windows 2000 because of this problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Meaning that you created a new User Account and the L key still persists in starting Outlook Express?

It is definitely the On Screen Keyboard.

Ugh, tried to duplicate your problem and I was successful!
My keys affected were e, f, l, m, r
Outlook Express was not opened with the L key, it went to the Welcome Screen!

On the On Screen Keyboard, I clicked the key that looks kind of like a calculator, between the Win Key and the Ctrl key.
Right side of the Space bar.

I don't know if I am out of the woods yet.
Until the On Screen keyboard actually let me type in this window, I clicked that key about four times.

Let us know what happens.

Have you tried to see if there are any bak files in the Recycle Bin:

Make sure Outlook Express is not running.
Open the Recycle Bin on your Windows Desktop .
Locate the ".bak" files corresponding to the Outlook Express folders you want to recover.
The ".bak" file will be named like the folder in Outlook Express.
To restore a folder called "Archive", look for "Archive.bak", for example.
Click on the ".bak" file with the right mouse button.
Select Restore from the menu.
Locate the file in Windows explorer and open the folder it's contained in.
Drag and drop the ".dbx" file corresponding to the Outlook Express folder you want to recover to your Desktop.
In the Outlook Express store folder, click on the ".bak" file to be recovered with the right mouse button.
Select Rename from the menu.
Change the ".bak" file extension to ".dbx".
If the file was called "Archive.bak", for example, make sure it is named "Archive.dbx" now.
Open Outlook Express.
If your emails have been recovered, delete the ".dbx" file you moved to the Desktop.

Also if you do not find the files in the above location search your computer for *.Bak

I am just not able to access Windows Update - haven't been able to for ages. Have posted about it on the site before. I get a "done" message "but with errors on page" and then an error script. Anyway, re security fixes not being accepted because "IE6 need to be installed". I do have IE 6, as I said, and here is the version:

I am getting ready to re-install and I'd rather not have to re-do it all when I set up the new system. I couldn't find a specific folder for "rules" under outlook express....any ideas?

Answer:can I save my outlook express "message rules" settings?

Its possible but will require that changes be made to the registry. You can read how here, along with the warnings and other backups that will need to be done.

Whenever I click on a link in an email in Outlook Express 6, a Program Not Found dialog box opens up, and says Windows cannot find dustingforfingerprints (which I believe is some sort of blog thing one of my kids has), and it also says This program is needed for opening files of type 'URL: http protocol'. Then it prompts me to enter the location of dustingfingerprints. I guess it thinks this is the program to enter weblinks?

My operating system is Windows XP and my email program is Outlook Express. It's always worked fine, until about two weeks ago, when I try to delete mail in my Inbox, they don't delete. When I click the "delete" button, it appears to mash down like it's supposed to, but nothing happens. I tried going to the "microsoft.com/downloads" site to install their IE6 Service Pack, but got the message "Setup has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer already installed on this computer. Setup cannot continue." Any ideas?

I am getting ready to install windows 98 again on my new system, and I'd rather not have to re-enter all my email addresses into the address book. Anyone know how to save this file? I've checked out several files marked "address book," but none of them seem to store my addresses.

I am not postitive but i think they are saved in .WAB or .CVS files. With OE open you can go to files>export>address book and i think that it can be saved to a floppy. I tried it as a .cvs(comma separated values) and saved it to floppy which when opened looked like an Excel file. I tried the other option but had no option i could see to save it to a floppy and even though it said it was exported, i dont know where it went.

This should be a basic question but I could not find the answer in Outlook Express Help. Using Outlook Express. When I send out a group email, is there a way to just have the name of the group in the "TO" box, for instance "Friends" At present, Outlook Express spells out each and every email address and this upsets some recipients.

Running Outlook Express 6.0 on Windows 2000 all latest service packs and updates for both. Also installed is Outlook 2003.

Outlook is used for Office e-mail and can not be removed.

OE6 is used for personal e-mail accounts and News group access which is required for job support.

I have 2 e-mail accounts set up in OE6 and the "Leave a copy on server" checkbox is supposed to be checked all the time for both accounts. On average about once a month the box becomes unchecked on one or both accounts. This is a problem because quite often I will read and delete e-mails thinking that the e-mails will be retrieveable at home from the server. When I find that the e-mails are not on the server I can look back at the office and find that "leave a copy on server" check box is unchecked. I am the only one with access to my machine and those accounts. Has any one heard of this before? I was unable to come up with anything on the MS support knowledge base. and don't think that I should be charged $ to report a bug to Microsoft through their tech support.

IF ANYONE HAD EVER ENCOUNTERED THE FOLLOWING SITUATION, PLEASE GIVE ME A HAND. WILL APPRECIATE.

I use the "Outlook Express" for my email for years, no problem.
I had been using ISP for my email server and have my own email account set up, so far so good.
I had checked the box "delete from mail server after deleting from trash" and it works out just good. This is because, no need to log-on the mail server each time to clean up the read emails by hand, this way could release enough space for receiving email. Is because the ISP charge on over-quota space for emails, or just will block excess emails over the allowed space.
The problem started, when a friend told me could set the email folder away from the hard-drive C, I set it as per his suggestion. Then, the "auto-cleaning function" stopped performing.
I asked the ISP and was told because "Outlook Express" is designed by Mircosoft Inc. so they could not help.
Then, I set it back to the "defaulted folder", but the function could not be recovered.
This is quite annoying that I have to log-on the email server and clean up the emails daily by hand.

OK - I know there's supposed to be a way to stop the "send error report?" message from appearing. I have XP - at home AND at work - and it's really annoying when that pops up! I KNOW I'm having a problem, and I KNOW Bill G really doesn't care! It seems like it should be a setting under My Computer, but I'm not finding it. Anyone know how to stop this?Thanks!

I messed up! Sometime back, I tried some stuff I shoulda left alone! It happened months ago, and I forget the details (yeah, I know, if I forget what I messed up, or how, then how can I ask for or expect any help!). Short version: MSIE v6, running under Windows XP home edition SP1 (yeah, yeah) no longer sees the existence of Outlook Express v6, which is still, indeed, fully installed on my puter. Trouble is, I can't go to Tools/Internet Options/Programs and choose OE as my default e-mail reader, which I've been using for years now, since MSIE doesn't know it's there!

I've tried removing and reinstalling OE, from the Control Panel. The "remove" option takes only a fraction of second and then ends. Hard for me to believe it's really removing anything. So if it didn't, then reinstalling won't do anything cuz the "install" process, starting from one of MS's online sources of the original program, would only detect that OE is still on my hard drive, and would stop immediately. Indeed, that's what seems to happen, when I try reinstalling OE after trying the "remove" option in Control Panel.

I haven't tried reinstalling MSIE v6. And I sure don't want to have to go all the way back to something like format c: and using Dell's CDs to start all over again!

Within the past 2 weeks, I've got a issues that I am not able to figure out how to fix (acutally driving me a bit over the edge). Reply messages in my Inbox are coming in the same folder from recipients with a "+" next to them. In order to see messages, I click on the "+". Never happened before, and I've been using Outlook Express for years. I have not upgraded OE, no setting change on my part. My goal is to put back how it's always been, replies coming in there on message, not within another. Hope that makes sense. I will attempt to include a snapshot. I will eventually uninstall and reinstall, but really don't want to worry about losing mail and having to redo address book, etc. Any suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks..

Seems like you may have inadvertently changed the setting in OE for Current View. Click on View (on the top menu), Current View, and then unselect Group Messages by Conversation, assuming it is currently selected.

"Outlook Express" which has been my email program since Windows XP and up to Windows 8.1 disappeared when I uploaded Windows 10. This included all my saved emails and all my contacts. The replacement email program, which I assume is from Windows 10, is as useful as a eunuch.

Can someone tell me if my old "Outlook Express" is hiding somewhere on my computer or do I have to accept that it is gone? If it is still in my computer how do I bring it to the forefront? I should note that I am not particularly computer literate.

I'm using Win XP Home and subscribe to Microsoft's automatic updates and kind of trust Bill's kids not to corrupt anything in the process.

So the other day after an update session (Service Pact 3 maybe? ) When I restarted the computer OE was totally unavailable, desktop icon gone, couldn't find in "Programs". So I am wondering what happened. I did run a "find" for .dbx files and all the OE file catagories I had before came up as still existing but I can't access them without the main program, at least with my limited knowledge.

Should I try to reinstall OE 6? And where do I find it? Or what. I have had this computer for 4 or 5 years and lots of mail is stored in the OE files. I have a secondary question, if I ever do recover my old OE can I transfer some of the files to Word or some other program that I want to archive instead of burdening OE with them.

I have accessed my current e-mails thru my ISP since the disappearnce of OE but would sure like to have the other archive files available again.

Any help is welcome, thanks

Open the Run box, press the Windows Logo key and R.
Or use, Start > Run

Key in exactly:
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe"
Click: OK

Outlook Express should start.
To restore the shortcut for Outlook Express:
Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Window Components (Left side of the Control Panel)
In the Add/Remove Window Components window, scroll down to Outlook Express.
If Outlook Express is checked, uncheck it.
Click Next then click Finish

Click the Add/Remove Window Components again, this time, place a check mark for Outlook Express.
Click Next then click Finish

A shortcut should now be on the Start menu, it will probably be at the end of the Start menu. From that shortcut, you can send it to the Desktop as a shortcut and drag the second shortcut to the Quick Launch bar, if desired.
Let us know if that works for you or not.

I've never seen this before I can't find any information on how to fix it.
Last night when I opened up Outlook Express it sucked down all the free memory on my computer and brought it to almost a stand still. I'm talking about aprox. 360 MB's of RAM..

When I start Outlook Express, I watch the ram and it goes steadily downward until it bottoms out and bounces around 0-5 MB free. I have about 20 seconds before it eats it all up.
After that I can't do anything until I can get the program shut down and everything returns to normal once the memory frees up.

I have A LOT of messages.. Over 100,000 in one account. I would venture a guess that I have about 250k total including Sent. I don't know if this matters but I thought I would bring it up.

I have scanned for virus' but I don't know what else to do. Does anyone have any idea about this, or heard anything?

I use Internet Explorer 7 and Outlook Express 6 to access my MSN email account. At times, when opening Outllook Express, it will not automatically search for my new messages. It says I am offline & asks me if I want to be online. I have to click on "Send/Receive Messages" to activate my search for new messages. If I restart my computer and then click on Outlook Express, it will automatically search my Inbox immediately, everytime. I went into options and I have the box checked that says "Send and Receive Messages at Startup". It seems Outlook Express isn't recognizing that I am always online. Any suggestions?

David Einstein, San Francisco Chronicle "computer guru" has stated that when one "deletes" e-mail FROM the Deleted Items Folder, that instead of being finally deleted they go to a hidden subfolder. This is why, he states, periodically Outlook Express will put up a query-box asking whether one would like "old messages" to be compressed to save space. Einstein says that what actually is being asked, is for permission to delete, deleted items, finally and forever from the hidden deleted items folder.

That Einstein's statement is correct, is implied by the fact that un-intentionally deleted items, from the deleted items folder, can easily be restored. That "restore" comes, naturally, from the hidden subfolder.

OK....my query is: What is the directory and file-name of that hidden subfolder?

This isn't a hidden folder. It's called Deleted Items. If you can't see it, click on View on the top bar, then click layout. Make sure that Folder list is checked. Click apply then OK. You should now see the deleted items folder on the left.

Hello tech helper(s),

Thank you in advance for your assistance. I am running XP on a vanilla PC, and have installed IE 7 and Outlook Express 6. I updated IE 7 just last night, to make sure that that is all in order.

All works except for one thing, and it's so frustrating! When I am in Outlook Express, with my Inbox populated by many messages, and I try to do a "Find Message" on that folder, all that happens is that I get a blank results window, regardless of what search criteria I select.

I searched the forum and found one relevant message from long ago, but the answer to that message is not helpful to me.

I've tried various antidotes. I could try to re-install Outlook Express, but doing so seems challenging. And I fear losing my Inbox messages altogether if I do that.

If you can give any advice, I'll appreciate that. In fact, I'm so desparate I'm willing to pay for some effective help.

Oh the joy of PC carnage.

On Nov 4 my PC motherboard crashed and was shipped back to the manufacturer under warranty. My system, a P4 on Win XP was originally built in Australia with an Asus P4800S motherboard. Now that I live in the USA, it took some time for Asus to authorize the repair....but I digress.

Motherboard was reinstalled and all applications except Outlook Express 6 work. Outlook Express is "unable" to remember the outgoing mail settings after a 24 hours period. It remembers the incoming, but not the out, changing from pop.etc.net to 127.0.0.0. When I go into the account configuration and manually input it again, it still won't pick up my mail off the server. A reboot of the system doesn't help either, I physically have to delete the account settings and add new email settings, the same settings that were previously applied. It then picks up the backlog of mail.

I thought that McAfee may have not picked up a virus so I went to a system restore point prior to the motherboard failure. Alas, the entire PC it is unable to restore to any settings prior to the motherboard failure.

Suggestions on the email first before prophecies on the doom of my PC.

or if not Installed disable McAfees Email Scanning option and set the server settings and reboot.. do they still stick, if so good.

If not yo umay have to disable each one of your security applications, spamblockers etc to find the culprit.

I send and receive e-mails on Outlook Express 5. When I receive an e-mail from an AOL user, and try to respond by clicking on "Reply", all the AOL receiver gets back is the letters yp. Does not happen with messages received from non-AOL users. Does not seem to be a virus. Looking for any ideas on how to solve the "yp" problem.

Win XP Home Ed; Outlook Express 6.0. Have two identities. Yesterday one of the identities began to not allow moving unwanted messages to the Delete folder. Also could not move them to any other existing folder.

Each time try to delete or move or drag and drop get the following error message: "The selected message(s) could not be moved. An error has occurred."

Can delete emails by hitting the Shift-Delete keys but not desirable. Found that I can create a new folder and move or drag and drop to it and then delete the new folder but also not desirable.

Other identity functions normally.

Sounds like the inbox may be getting corrupted.

Move the messages you want to keep into a folder that is not a subfolder of the Inbox just in case something goes wrong or you have to end up deleting the inbox file.

Then make sure hidden files and file extensions are showing (My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View tab, check "Show hidden files and folders," uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operating system files).

Then in Outlook Express in the identity having the problem, go to Tools>Options>Maintenance tab>Store Folder button. Once you know the exact location of the store folder that identity is using (there will be more than one with a long alphanumeric name so be sure you've got the exact name), close OE, navigate to it and delete the "folders.dbx" file. If that doesn't solve the problem, go back and delete the "inbox.dbx" file.

If you have to delete inbox.dbx, OE will open with a new, empty Inbox. Just move your saved messages back into it.

In XP, all the OE mail foldders are stored as .dbx files. Do a file search for inbox.dbx. Mine is in
C:\Documents and Settings\[my name]\Application Data\Identities\{742DC712-BE9D-4EF7-BA65-C0041FC3121A}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Inbox.dbx
Copy it somewhere - click on the copy to make sure it works.

Several times a day I get a message "Outlook Express. To free up disc space, Outlook Express can compact messages. This may take up to a few minutes" which is preceeded by 10 minutes of my PC being very slow. I have 50% disc space free (37GB out of 74). I run Windows 97. I have defragmented my disc several times. I have used RegCure regularly and it has made no difference. At other times, I try to start Outlook Express and a message comes up saying it is already running, followed a little while later by the above error message. Any ideas, please?

My Outlook Express opens and immediatly starts sending messages and won't recieve unless I hit stop and then click recieve. If I let it go on sending it takes forever then ends in error. I suppose that there must be a way to delete the outgoing message, whatever it may be, so Outlook won't keep trying to send it every time I open Outlook Express. If anyone can help me I'd appreciate it. My os is Windows xp home edition. Thanks, Mike.

Enable: Hidden files and folders:
Open My Computer,
Tools > Folder Options > View tab,
under Hidden Files and Folders,
verify Show Hidden Files and Folders is selected.
uncheck Hide Extensions for known file types
Apply, OK, to save and close.

Start > Search > For Files or Folders
All Files and Folders
key in:
.dbx
Look in: Local Drives
click the arrow for More Advanced Options
place a checkmark in:
Search System Folders
Search hidden files and folders
Search subfolders
Click Search
Locate the Outbox.dbx file and rename it Outbox.old
Or just delete the Outbox.dbx file, Outlook Express will create a fresh new one.

You can also configure Outlook Express to NOT Send/Receive at startup.
Tools > Options > General tab
Uncheck: Send and receive messages at startup
Apply, OK, to save and close.

Let us know what happens.
