Outlook 2003 reading pane issue

Question: Outlook 2003 reading pane issue

I have the reading pane activated in Outlook 2003. I've noticed that when any email is shown in the reading pane, the header information is followed by approximately 10 blank lines before the message text is shown. This happens regardless of the location of the reading pane (below or to the right). If I open the email, everything looks fine. The blank lines are annoying because I usually have to go to the reading pane and scroll down to see the entire message. I should also add that the blank lines are fixed, so when I scroll through the message the white space stays there and doesn't scroll. Any solutions? I'm running XP SP2.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

Every time I create a new folder in Outlook 2003 the Reading Pane "Hide header information" option is enabled by default. I know I can select View / Arrange By / Custom / Other Settings and then uncheck the "Hide header" box, but this is tedious if I'm setting up several new folders.

According to Microsoft no global change can be made to this value in the Reading Pane. Does anyone know of a tweak or utility which can set the default to show the header in the Reading Pane view?

I'm using Outlook 2003 (on Exchange) on an XP Pro machine. I have it configured to give me 2 email accounts. I have the reading pane activated on both accounts.

I used to be able to print (clicking the print icon or using the menu) from the reading pane without actually opening the email for each of the two accounts. Now, I can only do it from one of the accounts. The error message I get when I try to print from the second account is: "Message headers cannot be printed. Download the complete message and then print."

The fact that I used to be able to print from both, but now only from one leads me to believe I inadvertently changed a setting. Someone suggested it may be a security setting, but I have no idea.

But I don't know if that still works in 2003.
And I don't know what you mean by globally--all views on one PC? all PCs?

I have a user that somehow got the reading pane in the center/middle of oulook 2003.
I can only find out how to put it in the bottom, right, or off in the settings.
The only thing I found on google about this was this page...

I can't seem to disable the "Reading Pane" in Outlook 2003. Under "View" > " Reading Pane " I get no response when clicking on "Reading Pane."

I am under the impression that it is a good idea to keep the Reading Pane "off" so as not to "open" automatically emails which may contain viruses.

Any suggestion, on how to turn off the Reading Pane in Outlook 2003 when my Reading Pane "switch" seems to be disabled, would be appreciated.

For some reason, new mail in my Inbox now displays in the reading pane without the message headers (subject, from, to, etc.). Mail in all other folders displays the headers, and mail moved from my Inbox to any other folder displays the headers. I can't find a setting or option which would seem to address this. Any suggestions?

Hit View-->Arrange By-->Current View-->Define Views. Copy *this* view and use it on your Inbox.

Hi Guys,

I have been doing some research and it seems that the reading pane in outlook isnt that safe. In most of the sites i visited it said it was better to turn this off so you dont open your self up to viruses. Can somone confirm this is true before i send an e-mail round my organisation telling them to turn it off.

The reason i started to look into this was when one of our users started to recieve loads and loads of spam mail i have sorted the problem wit that now but because she had her reading pane on it seemed to infect her computer but if she had to double click on the e-mail to open it this would not have happend. Can anyone please confirm if this is the case also.

Though turning it off is recommended, good email AV should be sufficient.

And, no, double-clicking does not protect anyone. Opening the mail by any means has the same effect.

A good AV with a "resident shield" is sufficient in most cases, but the added email scanning feature of AVG, for example, that scans incoming mail, adds even more security.

The point really is that mails from unknown persons or with suspicious titles should not be opened at all.

I'm having a weird problem. All of a sudden, the reading pane in outlook went away. I've tried setting it to both settings (Right, Bottom, and even Off). Tried going through Programs and repairing office ultimate. Also uninstalled outlook from there and re-installed, but still won't show.

Any ideas on how i can get it back! All I see is the list of emails, and then I have to double click to open in seperate window and read/respond/etc.

Do you by any chance have Dell MediaDirect on your system? If so, try uninstalling it, reboot and check Outlook again. I had the same problem until I did this and it worked.

I find the 100% setting for reading emails in Outlook 2010 too small and would like to set 150 or 200% as a default but I can't find any facility for this and I have to adjust the setting manually every time. Can anybody advise me please?

You have two options for doing this:

Option 1:
Create a new email type something and go to the "zoom" feature on the top right.
Select the percentage% you want the fonts to be displayed at.

Note: The fonts may not appear large when you are viewing them on the reading pane or double click open the email. For that view you will have to always manually zoom it yourself on the right corner in the bottom but you will be able to see the fonts large when you hit reply after doing the 2 points mentioned above.

Hi,

I'm using an Acer Windows 7 machine with MS Outlook 2010.

When I left-click and hold on the scroll bar of the reading pane
when viewing a long email, and move the mouse/scroll bar
up/down, the email doesn't scroll up/down with me as I move
the scroll bar. When I release the mouse, then the email moves
to the new position of the scroll bar.

How can I get Outlook 2010 to smoothly scroll, like it does every-
where else?

This event just started happening, I think after the July 10 MS Updates so it could be related - but maybe not. It crashes, and when restarts the reading pane is turned off. If I turn it back on, certain emails will make it crash again. Here is the message I get when it crashes:

Every since I have been using Outlook 2007 I have always been able to view the html e-mails. last week the suddenly disappeared. I did my research and have tried every suggestion I seen. new profile, trust center, etc. One ting I do know that if i start outlook in safe mode everything displays as it use to. So there has to be something blocking the html pictures. when I click on the pictures it takes me out to the senders web site and shows it to me so the links are there. this is starting to drive me crazy, any help would be appreciated

Hello all, I have two MSO2003 problems..

Problem 1:

Win7 HP.. when I start Outlook 03, a popup asks

Do you want the following program to make changes to this computer:

This has been happening for a while.. I dont remember when it started, but it seems it began when the reading pane thing below started..

Problem 2:

The reading pane will -not- stay on the bottom of the sceen when Outlook starts up.. I change it time and again from side pane to bottom pane and it just doesnt stay bottom when Outlook is restarted..

Any ideas? No viruses, or malware/spyware on the machine.. MSE updates/runs full scan every night.

I have quite a few machines on my domain that have started acting strange. All have windows xp pro, and windows office 2003. Some are doing ok, but some, including mine, will not respond when you hit the navagation pane buttons. If you hit the calender button you don't get your calender in the view window and all you get in the navagation pane upper window is the option to share your calender with someone. All of the other navigation pane buttons are doing the same thing. We have HP machines and clones and a few dells and this is happening on all of them. I have loaded the latest updates and service packs for outlook 2003. This is bugging me to death. Any help would be appretiated.

I use a fairly large directory tree to manage and organize my email, including several pst files/Outlook data files. And I use various rules so that acertain incoming mail automagically lands in various places.

But ... every time one of those messages magically lands somewhere, Outlook pops open the tree containing the target directory. Is there any way to tell Outook NOT to do this? After all, I do oknow where to look for my own mail, and I know WHEN I wish to do so!

Hi. Recently installed Outlook 2003 on new Dell Laptop. Have heavily used Favorit Folders Pane in Outlook in the past. On my new laptop however, every time Outlook closes or I power down, the Favorite Folders Pane forgets/deletes all the folders I've put there. Kind of a Pain in the tuchus. Is there a way to save my changes that I'm not figuring?

Also... recently noticed that when I respond to an email in Outlook, my response font that I see is severely enlarged. Does not seem to come back to me that way. Any way to reset this also?

Having the same problem with a user here with the folders disappearing... best we could find was when you make the folder make sure there are no special characters... especially / as it just deletes the folder... course this wasn't our particular problem still won't save the folders...

2. Contacts - "My Contacts" is there a way to tweak it and add an icon to a diffferent contacts folder.

I know that all of this can be acheived inside of "Shortcuts". You can save a few clicks if were able to tweak the "navigation pane options" and just add shortcuts there.

You *can* add your most used folders to the Favorites area at the top.
And don't forget, you can open a folder in its own window as well. Comes in handy sometimes.

I like the way that I can view Image attachments in the Preview Pane of OUTLOOK EXPRESS. Is there a way to set Outlook 03 to do the same.. I find it easier to get a quick look at the images if I can just scroll to see them.

I just put in a new hard drive and installed the latest version of Office 2007. I kept the data and archive files from Outlook 2003 so I could import them into Outlook 2007 and get back to business. However, that did not happen. It was able to read and bring up most of the data, but I am missing some folders which are critical.

The critical folders are folders that were created manually. They were used to store email messages that came in that were important. They were simply dragged from the Inbox and put into that folder. There were also folders within that folder. I'm not sure if these folders and subfolders were in the Inbox or not. They may not have been.

The way I imported it was by going to TOOLS>ACCOUNT SETTINGS>DATA FILES tab>and pointed to the old PST file.

I also pointed to the archive.pst file as well, but later went to FILE>ARCHIVE and pointed to the old archive.pst file in there. Bot ways did not reveal the folders that are needed.

Is Outlook 2007 not able to read all data from Outlook 2003 pst files, or is there a fix for this?

Please advise.

I purchased a new Notebook with Office 2007 installed and copied over my Outlook 2000 pst file. I also had manually created folders for filing important emails. Mine were sub folders within the Inbox folder. Everything copied over, but I could not see the manual folders at first until I double clicked the Inbox folder in the side panel and then they spilled out. I would look for them in that panel and double click anything there starting with Inbox, Sent etc. Also try doing a search for any subject or address of an email you may have saved.

When copying over the pst file I think everything is copied. Appears you did not just copy contacts for example, but the complete pst file. I think the folders are there as Sub Folders, just hidden within one of the main folders such as Inbox.

Running Outlook 2003 (included in Office Pro 2003) on WinXPHomeEdSP3 computer (see some sysinfo from Excel below)
I have used Outlook as a POP3 mail handler for several (almost 10) years. Issue is with access to my Contacts List. It is there and can be accessed by clicking on the Contacts folder in the Folder List view int he Navigation Pane, but directly clicking on the Contacts shortcut on the Navigation Pane does not connect (the Mail shortcut and the Calendar shortcut both work OK. Any thoughts on how to restore the broken shortcut to the Contacts List?? Could it be trying to reach a defective Contact List??

Howdy,
Been searching for this one for a bit. Found loads on Blank Reading Pane however this is slightly different.

Have a home user who some messages are not displaying in the reading pane. These are mainly from Facebook and some various ones from their work colleagues.

When choosing reply message is also blank however selecting Office Button > Editor Options > Display > Hidden Text (checked) the message content appears.

Why then is the message content not visible in the main preview pane? These are just the simple message notifications such as from facebook.

Looked at fonts / mail format (tried all variences) to no avail.

Any help appreciated.

My MS Outlook (2003) reading pane has simply disappeared.  I've tried to get it to come back by selecting "bottom" "right" or "off" under the options.  I've tried restarting MS Outlook.  I've even rebooted.  No luck at all.  Any other suggestions or possibilities as to where it might have gone?  It doesn't appear to have been minimized or "hidden."  I'm honestly out of things to try.  Any help is appreciated!

Got 3 computers running win7 pro. All three computers have office 2010. On two of my computers Outlook 2010 opens exactly where I want it too - Tasks-Outlook-Microsoft Outlook. In the right pane is a list of my tasks. In the navagation pane is My Tasks with sublisting of To-Do List and Tasks. In the bottom of the navagation pane is the two icons I checked Calandar and Tasks. Nothing else is in the navigation pane which is exactly what I want

The third computer opens Tasks-Outlook-Microsoft Outlook as it is supposed to. However in the navagation pane, it shows the entire lists of Outlook and all the folders. For the life of me I cannot get this computer to open the same window as the other two. I do not want the list of folders displayed. What have I missed?

After weeks of research and no resolution, I have come to a conclusion that the issue may not be with Outlook but rather with Windows 7. I imported my "working" Outlook profile to the offending computer but nothing changed. What in win7 would create an issue of a program not opening the way the settings dictate it should?

I have a problem that my IT department is unable to resolve. My outlook version is '03 SP2 on XP SP2. When I receive an email that has a picture in the body of the email, the picture (.bmp .jpg or other) does not appear. However, if I forward the email I can see the picture. IT cannot figure this out so they rebuilt my PC & it worked properly for about 4 weeks, then reverted back to the same problem. I am not the only person this affects, I just seem to be the only one that is making an issue of it. I suspect it somehow relates to the fact that my Favorites Folder Pane in Outlook also has problems. One day it looks like I set it up to look, the next only my sent items are there, I fix it, the following day only my inbox is there, I fix it. It can stay correct for days at a time, then something comes up missing. It's almost like my profile isn't the same each day. Anyone else come across this?

All of my end users - all on the same subnet of the same LAN, and all using the same Exchange 2007 server - use Outlook 2003. The problem described below only affects 1 user on the network.

outgoing e-mail, no matter which format, is not affected
incoming e-mail in plain text format is not affected
incoming e-mail in rich text format (RTF) is not affected
incoming e-mail in HTML format - from ANY source - is the problem
Incoming e-mail in HTML format - from ANY source - displays with a dark blue background and gray text (almost impossible to read).
It doesn't matter how the same e-mail displays, in Outlook, to the sender - when the e-mail is first created
It doesn't matter how the same e-mail displays, in Outlook, to any other recipient
The only variable in the above is how HTML e-mail displays in that one user's account.

In that one user's Outlook installation
i deleted & created that e-mail account
Went through every setting I could find pertaining to HTML e-mail and e-mail appearance -- no doubt I missed THE one setting that matters
For that one user's Outlook installation, I attempted
Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs --> Microsoft Office 2003 --> Add/Remove Features
Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs --> Microsoft Office --> 2003 Reinstall/Repair
I had to kill each process since each had taken 45 minutes to get 1/3 of the way through the process - I was using Remote Desktop, and ran out of time. My best guesses a... Read more

Good Morning, I have a issue that I would like to put out there for discussion.... I have a customer with a Windows 7 Home Premium notebook, and he is using Outlook 2003 to read his email. He receives one email a day from the same sender that when read the email is basically in code, with no photos, icons, etc.. and at the top of the email it says "plain text". Now I would assume that the sender for some reason it sending the email in "plain text" but he claims that his old notebook (Dell with XP) and the other users in his office receive the email just fine.

Any Ideas?

Hey everyone, I've run into a bizarre problem, and was hoping someone here can help.

I am having a problem, when a user is sending an email, the "to" recipient is 'disapearing.'

Meaning, the person the email is sent to still gets the message, but they do not appear on the to line.

This has happened a few times and I do not know if it is an Outlook 2003 glitch or a Exchange 2003 glitch.

It happened to different users with different recipients.

I have one user trying to open and edit another user's calendar (which is ok and should be happening). Let's say Bob is opening Mary's calendar for reference purposes. Bob has Owner rights on Mary's calendar. I had to set Bob with full rights to Mary's mailbox within Active Directory Users and Computers to get this to work in OWA, otherwhise Bob could only open a read only version of the calendar.

From Bob's Outlook 2003, Bob can add new entries to Mary's calendar, but when he opens an occurance of a series, he gets 20 error messages in a row and then an illegal operation error. The 20 messages read something about cannot read the occurance.

Any ideas?

Hi folks!
Weird issue here. WHen I have an Excel spreadsheet open at the same time as Outlook, I try to copy and paste a portion of the spreadsheet to a new Outlook message. But as soon as I click on "New Mail Message"....Outlook stays open, but Excel closes immediately and what I copied to the clipboard isn't there any more.
I tried this on a second computer and it seems to work fine.
Any ideas on why this is happening on this one computer?

Yesterday afternoon my mail app suddenly decided that I no longer wanted the reading pane off to the right side unless I am in full screen mode. If I open the window wider (but not full screen) it will either let me have the preview screen or the bar off to the left with the list of accounts, but not both. If I open the mail app in full screen it has both the preview pane and the ribbon on the left.

Hello,

I keep getting the following message while clicking on a link in the reading pane of Outlook: "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your System Admin."

Well, I am the Admin and I've checked every conceivable setting in Outlook and my browsers (both firefox and explorer) and it still can't figure out what the problem is.

I am behind a Linksys wireless "WRT54GS" router.

This started happening a few days ago and I haven't loaded any new programs.

Any help would be appreciated.

Anyone know how to get the body of sent custom forms to appear in the preview pane? This only happens with forms that modify Item.body/htmlbody. If I open the email in a new window everything appears okay, however I'd like to have it appear in the reading pane.

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bits with a monitor in portrait.

For that reason I would like to get the preview pane in Explorer at the bottom of the screen for having a readible preview for example of a pdf (because the new 16:9 screen are getting so low, and thus so narrow in portrait).

Is this possible.

In that way one could also choose to have a filmstrip of the pdf :

- Landscape monitor : pane right : full pdf view
pane bottom : filmstrip of pdf pages.

- Portrait monitor : the opposite

You just want the classic look of windows? is that right?
You can turn off the UAC thing, I did.
hit "windows key"-r and type in msconfig. go to tools and scroll down to select disable UAC. click launch. now just restart the computer.

Hey all,
I want to migrate from outlook express 6 to outlook 2003. For this I tried Import & Export feature of Outlook.... though I easily imported my mails, folders, rules, account details but now when I click Send/Recive it starts downloading all the mails from pop3 server again and I have hundreds of mails n u know since it starts downloading all the mails from scraps even already read mails so its quite irritating for me

I wud be highly greatful to all of u if anybody tell me, Is there any option or rule avilabe in Outlook 2003 which restict downloading alredy read mails ( ie the mails I imported from outlook express)

Hi Everyone

I have a question regarding MS Word.

Basically, every time I open a word document, I want it to open in reading layout. I know I can select this option through the menu in MS Word. However, I need this to be a permanent setting and want to make this change through the registry editor.

Is anyone familiar with a registry key that I need to amend (or create) to enforce this setting?

For some reason over the last couple of days, Outlook has been either hiding or removing sent emails from June.

I go to the Sent Items folder and can see messages from yesterday - and then last month (May), but as soon as something is two days old *poof* - I can't find it anymore.

I can't locate a single message from June once it's more than a day old.

It's GOT to be something simple, something I'm not seeing. Can't imagine Outlook erasing only emails from June.....but I'm stumped.

Any ideas?

So my Outlook was bad today. Running 2003 on Vista Ultimate on a HP laptop.

I also run USA.net encryption software, but was not using it on the particular email at the time of the first crash.

So I send an email to about 15 people in my office with a simple Word .doc attachment..nothing big. USA.net encryption has a fit and refuses to recognize me or my password. The email got as far as my out box and hung. I tried to delete it, move it to another box, open it...anything and everything and all I got was "Outlook is already in the process of sending this" but it never leaves the outbox and move to the Sent Items box.

So I uninstall the encryption software, and all that does is stop the wacky error pop up messages from USA.net. Still the email will not do anything in the Outbox. Outlook tries to send/receive every so often, as it is set up to do, and all that serves is an error message saying it encountered a problem and needs to close, or needs to shut down and re-open. It chooses - I have no control over it, and as it is about 10 seconds between each closing, I don't have much time to try anything.

This is a hard one to explain. I'd capture screenshots if I gave me enough time. During this I've had 2 memory dumps and one Vista error message telling me it is my webcam drivers. Never use the webcam...drivers are the same ones that have always been there, and yes, they are Vista compatible.

I'm having an issue with two computers that is quite strange. Outlook will not complete the recieve function. Both computers pull 26.7mb and then Outlook freezes up. Both computers are completely up to date, as well as the 12 other computers that are in the building. All the account information is correct. Has anyone experienced this before, or is there any advice?

This just started and I'm not sure why. I have three folders I created in my Inbox. This problem only occurs with the Personal folder and it just started. When ever I reply to an email I've sent a copy goes right into the Personal folder instead of the Sent folder. This is not happening with my other two folders in my Inbox.

I've been running the spyware/adware software and NOD32 to check and clean anything up and not really finding anything. Firefox just went to hell on my at the same time. It worked but various extensions started to fail and about 10% of the browser, at the bottom, was not displaying anything. I had to uninstall and clean things up and reinstall all from scratch to get Firefox back on it's feet.

I recently posted here as I'm not confident that the 10/10 MS update went okay. I noticed most of these were related to MS Office.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I have some new guy that is giving me grey hairs..hehe. Here is the issue. In his outlook 2003 contacts his contacts are listed as firstname, lastname. He would to have it as lastname, first name. I went tools - options - mail setup - email accounts - "added a new directory or address book". I added the outlook address book and personal address book. I then went back to "view or change existing directories or address book". I changed the selection to last name, firstname, closed outlook and relaunch and it would not take the changes. It still shows the firstname, lastname. Any ideas what could be wrong?

im tryin to help soemone with a problem concerning outlook.. there not using exchange... there using pop..there able to receive about half or so of there emails... the other half sit on the server.this only happens when his computer is off... when its on he receives all of them... since im waiting to test his new Pop3 settings...i just wanted to run this by anyone who can possibly get a solution to me.

he has exchange setup though in his email accounts.. thats to send internal emails right?

Hi all,

My problem started yesterday, I can receive email just fine from everyone. My issue starts when I create a new email and send it. It shows as sent, but no one is getting my email. If I reply or forward an email it works about 50% of the time. I have contacted Horde (our email host) and they have said there are no issues on there end. I also contacted Shaw (our internet host) and they also said that they could not do anything. I beleive i have had this issue before and it ended up being something to do with Outlook 2003. Any and all help is appreciated.

I use Outlook 2003 for my email. When I reply to an email and begin typing, then hit the Enter button on my keypad, hitting the Enter button brings up my name in parenthesis and in italics. I figured I may have mistakenly set a macro, but in the Macro editor I can't find it. How do I get rid of it so when I hit the Enter button my name doesn't come up? Thank you.

Welcome to TSG.

It sounds like Outlook is set to mark your comments. Go to Tools/Options and select the Preferences tab. Click E-mail Options. There should be a "On replies and forwards" section. Is "Mark my comments with" checked? If so, uncheck it. Hope that helps.

Hello,Very recently, whenever Outlook 2003 is open, (I'm using on my home PC), a dialogue box appears asking me for my user name and password. I then have the option of saving my password, which I tick.However, the box continues to appear.Email still gets through but the dialogue box is a continued annoyance and gets in the way.I know the username and password are correct as they are set up in my Email Account details and these details have never changed and like I say, I still get email.Any ideas why this pop up occurs and is there a way of making the PC remember passwords.I'm using XP Home, SP2.Thanks,Steve

Ok here is my problem, I attached my emails I needed to keep to an email (Microsoft Office Outlook 2003) and sent them to my hotmail account whilst I re-built my laptop. I then sent the email back to myself and then tried to open the attachments. They are not being reconised by any applications. I can open the attachments in Notepad but of course they have all the formating contianed within the files making them inpossible to read. Can you please help as these are important email, i.e. product codes etc., I really do not know how to get my emails back so any help would be great.

Hi everyone, Im new to this forum. In Outlook 2003, I can send email to folks in the directory (and it is sent in the 'Sent Items' but nobody can receive them. I get no error messages, its as if they received them perfectly. PLEASE help me..LOl

Can you receive emails you send to yourself? Try sending someone an email in plain text mode and with nothing fancy in the body that their spam filter could suspect is spam. All I can think of either they can't handle HTML or their ISP or email's spam filter is grabbing it. But even it it's an HTML thing, they should get something.

The last resort is to check with your ISP's tech support.

I have recently switched providers and outlook is giving me the warning in the attached picture every time I check my mail.

Is there a way to turn this dialog off? It is a real PITA if you know what I mean. Windows mail gives no such warning but I have used outlook for a very long time and do not want to switch.

Your e-mail server port numbers may not yet be correct. Check your e-mail account server settings:
What are the server port numbers you are using and what ISP are you with?
Incoming server (POP3) number is?
Outgoing server (SMTP) number is?

Do they also require an SSL connection?

Our employees use Outlook 2003 w/XP SP3, Exchange 2010. We have one particular employee that has been having issues with her Outlook. No hardware/software changes have been made recently to either the workstation or the Exchange Server.Issue 1Upon login and the opening of Outlook, it SHOULD update the mailbox with the Exchange Server. Once done it SHOULD display that it was last update on x/xx/xxxx (today's date)However it is always 2 days behind. This morning it says it was last updated on 3/23/2011 although her email is current.Issue 2This same user has to push send/receive to receive or send mail. I have tweaked the settings so it does it every 1 minute but it should be an automatic push.Issue 3When a new email is received a shadow box (notification box) appears for x amount of seconds to notify the user. This is not happening anymore.Troubleshooting-I have recreated her profile (including her mail profile)-I have checked all settings that I know of.-I've checked send/receive group settings-I checked to make sure "disable scheduled send/receive" was NOT checked-I receive an error when I manually hit send/receive (out of memory or system resources)OverviewI am at a loss. I am having and issue with emails. When I recieve messages sent with html images in the email. The html image appears as a red box with question mark. If you right click on this it does not give you the option to open image. I made sure that the dont download image button in tools , security, change automatic download settings is unchecked and still cannot see html image in a email that was sent to me.

Do you get the red bar across the top? the one that says "Click here to download pictures. Outlook has blocked pictures in this message." or something very similar. I think you have to click that bar not jsut the picture.

Looked on the forum and could not find any good info.

The issue is that I have multiple calendars. I am trying to merge the two and delete the copy. Can't seem to find a way to do this.

Reason I need to merge them is that not all of the appts carried over in the copy and many of the new ones ended up in the copy rather than the main calendar folder.

Suggestions?

Which view were using to copy the appointments over? I would probably look into changing to a list view or making one and bringing both calendars data into an access table. Within here I would run a query on the data to ignore the duplicates and then import the data into a calendar. After this I would delete the two old calendars and rename it if necessary.

I am having an issue exporting a .pst file for contacts & emails from Outlook 2003.  I keep getting an interface error msg & to restart Outlook to resolve issue.  Restarting does not fix the issue & have tried googling it & nothing has worked.  Does anyone know how to fix this issue.  This client has several hundreds of contacts.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The *.pst file can actually be found directly on the hard drive, you can copy the file to a flash drive or external hard drive and then import it to a different machine. If you can let me know what version of windows you are using (XP, Vista, 7 etc), I can tell you what folder it should be in.

I downloaded a plug in for Outlook (Jott) and it added a small toolbar. When I open Outlook it is under File, Edit, etc. I move it around on the screen so it makes only two toolbar lines instead of three, when I open Outlook again, it has moved to the top where I don't want it. How do I get it to stick to where I want it? Does this make sense?

I recently had to reinstall my operating system (XP) and am now experiencing a weird issue. I use Outlook 2003 on an exchange system. Everything installed/updated perfectly & have been using Outlook without any errors for a few weeks. I just tried to import some new contacts and when I click on the "Import from another program or file" in the menu, nothing happens. I click on the "Next" button and Outlook doesn't recognize the click. the system isn't hung up as I can select a different option or select cancel just fine. I can click on the other menu options, however neither the "Export to a File" or "Import from another program or file" operation work. I have done all the updates to Office 2003 and have had no other issues with any office application. I am a little stumped, especially considering this is a fresh install of office, without a history of potential bugs.

Any suggestions of what to try?

Hey Everybody

We are using Outlook 2003 with Exchange Server 2003. I have several users that when they click on their tasks or notes only the left had side of the navigation pane changes, the right side does not. So, if you are in your mail, and click on tasks button, the right hand side still has your email in and the left side has the tasks view. Same thing happens to notes.
We recently migrated exchange from one physical server to another one. Not sure when this happened or if the migration had anything to do with it but I thought I would give that information.

Any thoughts?

Hi there, In this case I performed an Microsoft Office 2007 upgrade from Office 2003. Later due to the user's convenience again downgraded to Microsoft Office 2003. After the downgrade when I tried to check the user's outlook. He got all his pst's. But he lost his contacts/address book. Here I tried to recreate his outlook profile once again, but no good. In both the cases the user had arabic interface for Microsoft Office without any service packs. The operating system is Windows Xp Service Pack3.

The Outlook Address Book/Contacts list drives me nuts. Let's say I place an entry in Contacts. I then open a new email and start entering the first few chars of the name. Outlook will not find it. so I have to spell it out fully the FIRST time, then it finds it on subsequent emails. Netscape/Thunderbird does not have this problem and finds it the first time, and forgets as it as it should immediately when you delete it or change it. What am I doing wrong here?

2nd issue: This individual changes their email addr, so I edit their email addr in Contacts to the new one. But, Outlook remembers the old one, forever, and plugs the old one into the email. I check Address book which I never use (seems redundant) and place the NEW entry there. Still, Outlook is hung up on the old address which does not exist in either Contacts or Addr Book. Does anyone know where these are cached so I can purge them? Or is there a trick to updating email address in Contacts so the old one is purged?

OL 2003 and this odd thing just started to occur where this one particular character is being automatically inserted on every line of email messages.

You have word as your default email editor. Go to word and click on the icon on the taskbar that looks like the character that is showing on the screen (it should be right next to the zoom box). Displaying or not displaying it (they are called field codes) does not affect what you write and the recipient of the email will not see those characters unless they have also turned on the display of field codes.

Ok I'm no n00b when it comes to windows or office but this is something I can't seem to fix. Every time I log out of my computer and log back in my gmail email account settings get changed. Pop3 goes from pop.gmail.com to localhost and username goes from [email protected] to [email protected]/pop.gmail.com .. Anyone else ever encountered this issue? I googled it and found ppl with similar issues but no resolution listed.

BTW running windows xp sp2 with all patches. Googledesktop 2 is possibly doing it I'm thinking but don't want to remove it if I don't have to (great email search tool for work).

Here is the deal. When I open shared calendars in Outlook 2003 they will dissapear. I then I have to re-open the calendars. It doesn't happen all the time but a good 50% of the time it does this. I tried MS Knowledge base couldn't find anything. Anyone else have this problem. I know it can't be isolated because it happens on all the computers in the office. Thanks

We use XP and have a secured network, my users can log on to different computers and add their email acct to the computer and access their mail. Only this time one of my users did that but in the process did something wrong and now when she logs on to her regular computer and opens her email none of the messages are there. But when she logs back on to the pc she was borrowing earlier all her emails are there. Not sure what to do??

When I create a outlook rule (moving emails from certain people to a specified folder automatically) I get the following error message ?One or more rules could not be uploaded to the Exchange server and have been deactivated. This could be because some of the parameters are not supported or there is insufficient space to store all of your rules?My Outlook folder is pointing to the correct Exchange account and i am new here so only just setup this email account a week ago.Thanks in advance for any help.RegardsMatt

My boss is using outlook 2003 on an XP machine. His assistant is using Outlook 2003 on a win2k. She has access to his calendar and regularly adds appointments and manipulates it. She also has this access for other administrators. The XP machine crashed and I did a reinstall.

About a week later this problem occurred:

most of the appointments on the boss' and assistant's calendars moved 1 hour.

I went into date and time on control panel and checked the daylight savings time
This changed some of the calendar items back on the boss' calendar but not all.
I did the same to the assistants calendar

All was well for a few hours then I received notice that others have appointments that are with the boss that have changed times.

With the check mark out of the DST box on date and time the boss' time in the lower right is an hour behind (this makes sense as we are in DST). But when I put in DST the appointments change by an hour. This makes no sense.

Help please.

Just had to reload my system due to a virus. Outlook 2003 and office 2003. When sending a message the entire screen in maximized and I have to manually reduce the size of the window. I tried resizing, closing outlook and reopen and the same thing happens. I know there is a function at the top left of the page to keep it as a smaller window. Any help??

Hello,

We're having a problem with outlook 2003. We can send emails just fine but it can't seem to connect to the outgoing server. It's been working well until yesterday morning. I have no idea what we did to anger it as the person who uses this computer and program (my boss) is pretty basic in her computer skills and really doesn't do anything other than use her email, internet, word, and adobe. I'm thinking maybe an update did something that Outlook doesn't like? When I test the account settings the test email fails and it cannot connect to the outgoing server. I'll attach a screen shot of the message we get. From all of the posts I've read so far a lot of the problems seem to involve Norton but we have Avira?

I think we're over my head at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Click on the "More Settings" button and verify the following:

SMTP Server: smtphm.sympatico.ca
Port: 25 (or 587 if port 25 does not work)
Authentication: Yes
User name: Email address (e.g: [email protected] or [email protected]) and password (e.g.: a123456z)
TLS/SSL Required: Yes (select TLS if available, if not, select SSL)

If these are all correct, try deleted the email account and re-creating it.

My Outlook 2003 calendar is not appearing accurately when others are booking meetings.

The calendar is appearing open nothing booked, when I am actually fully booked.

I am using Windows XP.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello

I've seen this mentioned around the web a few times but I haven't seen any fix for it or even a path to the setting that alters it:

Basically, when I reply to an email the font in the message is huge. I have all my fonts set to 9pt Verdana and this is fine in the preview pane and also when I compose a new message myself. The problem only occurs when i reply.

What I've checked:
Tools - options - mail format - fonts: all options set to 9pt Verdana and Always Use My Fonts radio button is selected.

View - Arrange by - Custom - Other Settings: all fonts set to 9pt Verdana

FYI: I'm running Outlook 2003 on a Win2K SP3 workstation.

All suggestions welcome

I had a problem that was similar to yours, and was getting really frustrated with Outlook's dual font 'feature'. What was happening was that when Outlook uses Winword for mail composition, Outlook also used Winword's default Zoom View, which in my case was inexplicably set to 114%.

Thus to solve the problem, open up a new message in Outlook, from the menu select View\Zoom and make sure the setting is at 100%.

Hope that works for you as well.

Hi guys,

When I try to print an HTML email in Outlook 2003, I get the message "A runtime error has occurred, do you wish to debug? Line: 1173 Error: Unspecified"

This only occurs when I try to print an HTML email...any ideas?

Stumped.
When printing any email with embedded html graphics, it comes out enlarged and the graphic cut off at the right margin. I have tried EVERYTHING I can think of. Changed page setup settings in both IE7 and Outlook. Repaired Outlook installation, created a NEW mail profile, different printer drivers.. However...if I save the email...then reopen it in IE...it prints perfectly.
ANY suggestions?

Windows XP Home and Office 2003 were recently re-installed by my local PC shop after it had removed a Trojan for me.
I use Outlook Connector to sync Outlook 2003 with my Hotmail account. Since the re-install, if a message is received by my Hotmail account it is repeatedly delivered to Outlook 2003. I have to open Hotmail and delete the email to prevent it being forwarded multiple times to Outlook 2003.
Prior to the re-installation of Office 2003, Hotmail and Outlook 2003 worked very well via Outlook Connector.
I?ve had a quick look for a solution online but I can?t find one.
Please can anyone suggest a solution?

Just recently installed office 2003 w\ outlook. when I did install I didn't do a upgrade but the full install, then I imported my contacts from outlook express.
However now when I click the "To" button I get a ldap not found window then I have to choose my contacts from a drop down list. Is there a way I can copy my contacts to a Ldap directory folder. And where is this located?

Looks like you are responding to e-mails in html mode. Your IE internet/intranet settings are probably set to not allow active X controls which isn't really a great problem unless you can't stand the message. Open IE internet options and go to the security tab -custom level, scroll down and make sure the following are checked:

run active x controls and plugins
script activex controls marked safe for scripting

or if your not totally paranoid set the internet zone to medium high. Hopefully that helps
